Parker Palm Springs Review

Parker Palm Springs Review
I see this hotel recommended a lot for Palm Springs but haven’t seen a full review yet. Dates: 4/22-4/24 Room booked: Deluxe King Garden Room Upgraded at check-in to a Hammock Room (thanks Alex!)
We were transferring from the La Quinta Resort where we stayed for Coachella and wanted to arrive early. We called the day before and informed them we would be arriving between 11am and noon. Alex also reached out to the hotel and confirmed this would be okay. We arrived around 11:45 and were able to go directly to our room.
The grounds are absolutely gorgeous! Well manicured, beautiful flowers and tons of hummingbirds! Love the sand walkways in place of asphalt or cement, but could see that being a problem for individuals with mobility issues. It is pretty hard packed though.
The room was beautiful. Jonathan Adler designed and decorated. If you don’t like seeing yourself in the mirror you’d probably hate the bathroom as it is made entirely of mirrors. I forgot to take pictures of the bathroom ceiling but very cool. The hammock and outdoor sofa got lots of use! The shower was massive compared to the one in our room at La Quinta and the water pressure was great. They had great bathroom amenities as well (forgot to take note of brands).
Air conditioning unit is definitely dated. Couldn’t really set the temp and only mode was off or auto, it got hot at night (but I am someone who likes to keep things cold when I’m sleeping). One of the louvers on one panel of the blinds was broken and wouldn’t close completely. This didn’t end up being a problem however, my husband and I both use eye masks so if any light bothers you it would be a problem. There was a cockroach in the bathroom day 2. Called the front desk and they had someone come and remove him. I used to live in Phoenix so I understand this happens.
We really enjoyed the 13+ pool. The drinks are delicious ($20 a cocktail) and so refreshing! The Chucky was definitely my favorite! We also had the chicken Caesar salad, chicken tacos and the spring roll, all were really tasty which I think can be rare for pool side food.
We grabbed a drink at the lobby bar. Service was great. Husband ordered a vodka martini with a twist and said “it was good, actually really good”. Their bar snacks were lacking (but nothing will ever live up to The Dylan’s bar nuts in my book).
We had breakfast credits but didn’t use the first morning because we woke up around 11am. We did not realize they serve breakfast and lunch till 4pm (not sure if the breakfast credit works that entire time though). We ate breakfast second day. It was all fantastic! And service was great.
The vibe is midcentury modern, the lobby decorations are all over the place but somehow all work. The garden sculptures are also so random but also work wonderfully.
We will definitely stay again next year post Coachella, it was such a lovely way to relax and unwind. Plus we totally missed out on using the Spa but went and took a peak and it looked amazing!
I’m really bad at writing reviews but if you have any questions let me know and I’ll try to provide answers!
We also went to Shorebird for dinner and their Cubano Sandwich was other worldly! The sushi was also fantastic!

2024.05.10 21:03 semiurge D6x6 Alien Warrior Species

D6 This alien species resembles
1 perpetually-collapsing tensegrity sculptures of twirling black blades bound together by spool-wound white sinews.
2 wrinkly tardigrade-hydras, circular and toothsome throats peeking from armoured hoods.
3 mineral-streaked boulders carried by lumbering claws, irregular eyes peeking through cracks.
4 a ribcage made up of scaly fingers tipped with martini-glasses of tendrils.
5 articulated chess pieces or crenellated towers, rings of muscle within tall segments of colourful shell topped by marvellous crests - they've got a single wide, muscular foot at their base they can slide around on, or produce a cushion of air beneath like a hovercraft to "sprint".
6 blimps bound and squeezed into a hexapodal form, covered in gasping pores - their muscular and circulatory systems are pneumatic - a hardened undercarriage houses their more vital organs.
D6 This alien species is often thought of as warriors
1 because they co-evolved with a predator species of aggressive mimics - as a result their in-group/out-group reactions are amped up compared to humans, and they maintain a plethora of shibboleths and other social tests and react poorly, often violently to those who try to win them over improperly.
2 because they are the descendants of a group of gladiators who fell in love with each other and fought their way off of a precursor colosseum-planet Band of Thebes-style, stealing biotechnology on their way out to create hybrid children with each other.
3 because their first, second, and third contacts with other aliens species went poorly for them due to them being overly-trusting, so they default to a more cynical, aggressive approach nowadays.
4 because due to the vagaries of evolution they are on average much bigger and stronger than other species they've encountered, though this is not much of an advantage on technologically-advanced battlefields.
5 because, in their pre-contact days, they anticipated a galaxy under a dark forest scenario, and so modified themselves en masse to be more capable of and inclined to violence.
6 because many of them adhere to a religion that praises conversion by the sword.
D6 This alien species' signature weapon
1 is a complex megaphone which amplifies and phases-up the sound of their poetic insults to lethal levels.
2 is a combined miniature chemical plant and pneumatic launcher, which can rapidly whip up and output pellets of explosives, incendiaries, potent corrosives, nerve agents, and suchlike.
3 is something like a sword, though with more angles and edges than is really practical. Most often used symbolically.
4 is a gun which fires a stream of magnetically-guided nano-particles which denature proteins on contact, reducing living things to slop.
5 is an array of lasers that coordinate to cut their enemies into neat cubes or other fun shapes.
6 is a sort of telescoping exo-frame that exponentially magnifies the force they can output.
D6 This alien species' greatest victory recorded in general history
1 was against their very gods in the distant past, so they claim, though other species say this was merely a delegation sent to uplift them.
2 was a Pyrrhic one, a fleet engagement with a far more advanced enemy around an unstable star, which they managed to drag out long enough for the star to explode and wipe out both sides.
3 was when a conquering warlord at last united them after a century of strife.
4 was when they were able to repel a paradoxical monster back into the darkness of intergalactic space, after all others had fled.
5 was a daring raid deep into territory controlled by an enemy empire, which assaulted that empire's throne-world and decapitated their leadership in an instant.
6 was of a commando unit getting trapped on an enemy planet, and essentially re-inventing an industrial base to take over that planet.
D6 Others might say of this alien species: "Perhaps some of us could learn from these so-called barbarians" because
1 they abhor lying and the breaking of oaths - both capital offences in their society.
2 they avoid decadence - drugs, luxuries, indolence, and suchlike.
3 many of them are willing to die in defense of the weak, and give their lives in service to the poor.
4 their delicious cuisine is broadly appealing to many species.
5 they're dedicated environmentalists, and take pains to preserve wilderness and animal lives on planets they've invaded.
6 they take aesthetics seriously, and can express beauty even in violence.
D6 This alien species practices the funeral ritual
1 if the dead has been killed by another of making their remains into weapons with which a blood feud will be pursued.
2 of exchanging the remains of their dead with other families to be consumed and so cement bonds, performing a similar function to marriage.
3 of freeze-drying the dead, crumbling them to dust, then incorporating this dust into the foundations of buildings.
4 of interring their mummified dead in grand barges in orbit around their homeworld's sun - when a barge's catacombs are filled it spreads its solar sails and descends into the sun to be immolated.
5 of a process like plastination, only using metal to preserve the dead as sculptures.
6 of public dissection and making art out of the causes of death.

2024.03.04 01:39 HeroicTaquito Carnival Venezia 2/23/24 - 3/3/24

Good afternoon everyone! Just felt like doing a quick trip report from the Carnival Venezia, Bahamas cruise. I'm typing this out on my phone, evening after I disembarked. Please pardon spelling or grammatical errors and I am going by memory while it is fresh.
Ports of Call:
Miami - We ate at Joe's Stone Crab which was DELICIOUS. It was my first time having stone crab and I will definitely remember it. The crab did fight back and I cut myself on the shell while enjoying, but it was worth it.
-South beach pier was beautiful.
Bimini - Teeny tiny island. We got a golfcart and I would strongly recommend this. It was $80 for a 4 seat or $160 for a 6 seater for the day. The freedom the golfcart affords is worth it in our opinion. You can drive them right up to the beach, restaurants, and casino/resort on the island. Lots of fun overall. Radio beach was beautiful and we spent the majority of our time there. There were chairs and umbrellas you could rent. Chairs were $10/chair. There are loads of conch shells in the water that we could find. If we could come back we would just go enjoy the beaches.
Freeport - We did a shore excursion separate from Carnival to tour Lucayan National Park. Unfortunately, much of the parks beauty was destroyed by the hurricane in recent years. Much of the island is also still heavily damaged from the hurricane. We did get to go to gold rock beach which was beautiful and was were some of pirates of the Caribbean was filmed, that was very cool. Our guide, MJ (Michael), was also great. Sadly, I don't think we plan to return here.
Nassau - We did the Sun Cay VIP Villa excursion and it was really fun. The cay has massages, iguanas you can hold, drinks and food were included and drinks were unlimited. Our cruise party had 5 total so the price also wasn't bad. We would definitely do this one again although we didn't actually see Nassau proper, we did have a good time.
Ship (Overall): - I really enjoyed the Italian theme found throughout the ship. It was especially nice juxtaposed to my previous experience on the Carnival Vista. Everything is gilded with gold accents, marble pillars, and ivy walls/trees on the lido. It's easy to forget it's all fake and truly feel like you are on some sort of luxury ship at times. It's very fun. This was my first time on a boat with a retractable roof. It started closed while in the northern portion of the trip, then opened during the Miami port day to make the lido more airy. Speaking of the Lido, it is smaller overall compared to the Carnival Vista,, a very very small pool on 10 mid that very few people used throughout the trip. There's also a pool on 10 aft that's marginally larger, flanked by two hot tubs. The largest hot tubs on the ship, not on the terrazza. I personally think the smaller pool deck was to accommodate for more interior room given much of the sea days are in a colder climate. No large maintenance issues occured or were bored throughout the cruise.
Room: Balcony Room 10247 - I think we may have lost the room guessing game on this one. Day 1 our shower door would not stay shut while we were showering. Called room attendant and they sent maintenance to fix it. They did fix it for a few days. Then it started falling open and slamming against the bathroom door handle with even just a little bit of ship listing (we had some roughish seas (Beaufort 9). This kept us awake for a good portion of the night and we shoved washclothes and towels between the handle and shower door to try to prevent damage and quiet it down. I called the room attendant again and he said there was nothing he could do about it. I ended up typing the middle section of my bathrobe around the shower door handle and one of the towel racks in the bathroom to stop the slamming. It did impede using the toilet some so we had to duck down when we used the toilet. Less than ideal to say the least. The refrigerator in the room didn't work at all, wouldn't cool below ambient temp, and I was again told there was nothing they could do.
Pools/Hot Tubs: - These were a disappointment, but they were also a disappointment on my Carnival Vista cruise last year. There is one very small pool on 10 mid that few adults used, as it really feels to be in the middle of everything and everyone, including other events occuring on 10 mid. There were a few kids who used it. Just overall poorly placed. There is also a slightly larger pool on 10 aft that much more people used. It has lounge chairs around it. These are the only pools on the ship. There was generally room to swim in either of them, no complaints here. My complaints are with the hot tubs. There simply are not enough. There are 2 hot tubs on 10 aft, middling in size. Throughout the trip one was PACKED with children and maybe one of two adults. The other was PACKED with adults, to the point where people were standing just to be in the hot tub in case someone left. There is then two more hot tubs that are quite small and oddly shaped on Serenity deck 15. These were also routinely full, although I was able to squeeze myself in a couple times and have some room, although it was not very relaxing and I was quite scrunched in. Then, when in the hot tub, there were no servers that ever came over to ask for drinks, which was somewhat shocking to me. At one point another hot tub goer loudly asked for drinks from an attendant who was walking by and they said they would notify the bar, no one ever came to take a drink order. On a positive note, they were very clean up on Serenity. Call me a germaphobe but I never had the will to get in one of the hot tubs that I routinely saw many very young kids in so I don't know the cleanliness of those.
Bars (that I can remember):
Roccoco - Deck 10 Mid. This is more or less the center for frozen drink paradise. They had pretty much any frozen drink you could think of and would even combine them if you asked. It was always pretty busy but also a very fun bar. Service was great, just speak loudly and clearly because this is 10 mid so it can get a bit loud. On movie nights they also sold popcorn here ($4). ((Honestly, selling the popcorn on a movie night seems pretty cheap and was one of the most nickel and diming you moves I saw on the ship. Come on carnival, popcorn is cheap, just give out popcorn for movie time.))
Frizzante - Deck 5 mid. Specialized in sparkling wine themed drinks. Bubbles bubbles and more bubbles. A very fun bar immediately in front of the Il Viaggio restaurant. The bar tender was super fun, we popped a bottle of prosecco and she shot the cork across the deck by accident, it was very funny and everyone and a good time. The lemon cello mojito was quite good. They had a large screen near the seating area which had an animation of bubbling wine on it that slowly faded into different colors. This was a common spot to find ourselves stopping by to grab a drink, the line was never very long and service was quick and pleasant.
Amari - Deck 5, slightly forward. This is the sister bar to Alchemy on other ships. Specialized in martinis with an Italian twist. Also where a lot of the socials happen at. I only got one drink from here, not for any specific reason, but just don't have much experience with it. It was great! I just happened to not stop by more.
Piano bar - Deck 5 (fwd?) I. Freaking. Loved. This. Place. It was so fun in the evenings listening to Marcelo or Jazzmam play requests. It was a martini focused bar and they could honestly make a great gin martini, I even requested them to stir it (as I personally feel a martini should be made despite what Bond says) and they happily obliged. The pianists were fantastic l. Marcelo could listen to 40-50 seconds of a song and then improv the rest of it from there. We would frequently find ourselves loudly singing along and just generally having a good time. It was a nice escape for a slightly quieter evening relative to the man plaza or deck 10.
Auxillary bar on 11 mid (sorry can't remember the name) - Nearly directly above Roccoco. Pretty limited on liquor and drink making ability but had the bare necessities for simple, not frozen drinks. Was nice to hit up when the line at Roccoco was ridiculous or if you were already on deck 11. Dragos the bartender was nice, 10/10 for service Dragos.
Deck 10 aft bar - only got one drink from here, but was a well stocked full service bar. Didn't seem to specialize in anything specific. Just a sold bar near a pool. Did it's job and did it's job well.
Carnivale Bar - Deck (5?) Aft. I went here once, it seemed like a cool vibe. They have a proper espresso machine to make lattes or coffee themed cocktails. It has a Latin lounge feel. Honestly I just didn't go here often because it was quite out of the way. It is also the entrance to the terrazza section of the ship. If you had a terrazza room I would imagine this would be your main bar. It was well stocked, had plenty of bartenders, and was clean. I'd like to spend more time here.
I know there are more bars, I just didn't get a chance to experience them or am not currently recalling them. There is PLENTY of alcohol on this boat haha.
Restaurants/Food:
Main Dining Room (MDR) - In general the food was adequate. I wouldn't describe it as awe inspiring but generally everything was middling to good. It is the same fare as I remember from my cruise on the Vista last year. Standouts on the positive side would the the Carnival Melting Cake (of course), chicken parmesan, and sea bass. Worst dishes would include the lobster (unfortunately, see below), strip loin steak (very tough and chewy), and the this other fish dish I can't emeebe the name of (it had 3 small pieces of fish in it then just pasta). The bread at the beginning of the meal was sometimes warm and sometimes stone cold, so that was pretty hit or miss.
Lido Buffet (10 Mid/Aft) - It is the buffet everyone. What more is there really to say. It has mirrored stations on port and starboard. We only ate here once for a 2nd breakfast, and it was good. We did not eat any of our main meals here. Honestly we tried to avoid it as much a a possible, even to walk through because it was always busy and difficult to transverse without tripping over people.
Il Viaggio (Deck 5, MID): - Alright everyone. Everything I looked up suggested that if I dined here the first night, we would get a free bottle of wine. Maybe I missed the memo but they do not do this anymore. You do get 50% off any bottle below $100 per person, so still a relatively good deal, but it isn't any free bottle. Figured I should mention this up front.
~we did not eat at the steakhouse, bonsai sushi, or bonsai teppanyaki(sp?) so cannot comment on them, sorry~
Casino: - I ended the cruise with about 2000 points in total. About 1400 from slots (blackjack machine) and about 600 from tables (craps). I did get drinks on us in the casino once I hit 1500 points. Let me just say, it is DIFFICULT to reliably get a drink in the casino. Servers are very rare to come by the tables (at least craps table) and often difficult to flag down when playing a machine. I was playing for 30 minutes and then decided I was going to stop and start timing how long it was going to take a server to get to me. It took 20 minutes for a server to come by and ask me if I would like a drink, then another 10 for the drink to get to me. Maybe I'm just being unreasonable and difficult but it seems like they just don't have enough staff to cover the casino. I eventually just gave up trying to get drinks there in any timely fashion and was pleasantly surprised when a server did eventually come by.
Entertainment: - MarQ the cruise director was fantastic. Very fun personality. The bingo host who went by cappuccino was a hoot. We didn't see any big wins at the $5000 bingo which was unfortunate, maybe next time.
SUMMARY: We had a very good time on the cruise. There were ups and downs, both figuratively and literally with the rough seas. If I could do it again I would. I may sail out of somewhere more south next time and will probably try a different line for fun, maybe one of the slightly more expensive lines just to see what it's like. But I would do this sailing again. Thanks for putting up with this long winded report. Let me know if y'all have any questions!

2023.10.02 18:05 BarStar787 Pearl Dive’s grand opening brunch 🦪🦐🍾

Pearl Dive’s grand opening brunch 🦪🦐🍾
Made a reservation for the first brunch served at Pearl Dive on West 5th. It was their grand opening event and included a complimentary cart of raw oysters and shrimp that made the rounds, an oyster ice sculpture, jazz band, very well dressed parties.
The most memorable oyster was called a Little Bitch. Small and potent East Coast oyster and the mignonette was 💋. I didn’t order any additional oysters, there’s a dozen or so varieties, bartender said they’re about $4 each.
Two best dishes I ordered are small plates: squid ink calamari is a dark, crispy delicacy and the star of the show really was the Kanpachi Aguachile 🤩. It’s yellowtail pinwheeled in a delicious Serrano green sauce. So damn good. Fish tacos and fries tided us through a couple more drinks.
We were at the bar 4+ hours, had a good time with the bartenders, Houston Texans game was on. Tried cocktails both on and off menu. Pictures are the Black Pearl, a Mexican Martini, and espresso Martinis. Bartender also made a really good Mezcal Margaritas.
Total for 8 cocktails, 1 cold bar dish, 2 small plates and 1 brunch item was $216 plus TT. Brunch menu doesn’t have the big ticket dinner entrees but it can still add up fast.
Walked over to Bar Peached afterwards for Happy Hour. $7 cocktails and sub-$10 bites are great value there as always.

2023.08.31 00:12 yellowsweaterx TBHC + The Car fan theory (including Mark, of course)

This isn't actually my theory but my sister's, who doesn't have Reddit but gave me permission to post about it.
So, to my understanding, there is a fan theory around the TBHC music videos where Alex tries to kill hotel owner Mark so he can have the hotel. My sister has taken a deep dive into this theory and oh, boy has she got it all figured out! She came up with the theory that TBHC and The Car are linked through a certain lyric (I can't remember which?), and then came to this conclusion:
The Car is the story from Mark's perspective, TBHC is the story from Alex' perspective. Strap in, cuz its a long post!
Let's break it down, song by song, The Car first:
Then, there is TBHC itself, Alex' perspective:
I really like this fan theory! I love the storyline and how songs get interpreted. I think The Car being the the 'prequel' to TBHC is a very cool and creative take. Let me know what you guys think!

2023.07.17 11:15 OpenWorldsProject Looking for games with uncensored alcohol and/or tobacco advertising.

Hey all, out of mere curiosity and individual research, I want to make a list featuring video games with uncensored real alcohol and/or tobacco advertising and the brands that appear in them, usually in the form of logos. To make things more clear, I'm NOT including games that feature designs made out of real world censored logos, such as Ferrari F1 cars featuring in some way red and white symbols that resemble the Marlboro colours. I'm also not including logos that were altered to avoid licensing issues, such as "Marlbobo" in Super Monaco GP. And finally, I'm not including logos made by alcohol or tobacco companies but in theory unrelated to alcohol or tobacco products.
So far, I can only think of a few alcohol ads and only one real though unlicensed tobacco ads, let's see if we can make a comprehensive list!
Alcohol:
Various FIFA and PES games, as reflective of the real life clubs having alcohol sponsors. Unlike most racing games, these feature prominently and uncensored. (Carlsberg sponsoring the Liverpool team is probably the most obvious example, for more info check out the following link and search how they appear in the respective FIFA and PES games: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_in_association_football?wprov=sfla1 )
Martini Racing
NASCAR games since Heat Evolution (Busch, Dixie Vodka, Napa)
Metropolis Street Racer (Carlsberg, arguably Asashi as it features the HQ with its prominent sculpture)
Project Gotham Racing (Carlsberg, arguably Asashi as it features the HQ with its prominent sculpture)
Sega Rally Championship (Martini)
Sega Rally 2 (Martini)
Tapper (Budweiser)
The Getaway (Calsberg, Fosters, Heineken, Stella but there could be more)
The Getaway: Black Monday (Calsberg, Heineken, but there could be more)
Yakuza series, featured most prominently in 0 (Ballantine's, Beefeater, Bowmore, Courvoisier, Jack Daniel's, Laphroaig, Macallan, various Suntory and Ashashi alcoholic drinks)
Tobacco:
Gran Turismo 4 (in a form of a passing Winston Cup ad in Infineon/Sonoma, otherwise all alcohol and tobacco logos are censored)
Hang-On (Marlboro, though unlicensed and eventually censored in rereleases)
Formula 1, the original European release of the 1996 PS1 game (a fully uncensored Marlboro logo can be seen in passing when racing at Monaco, otherwise all tobacco logos are censored and further censored in the next releases)
Some pre-2003 NASCAR games such as the Thunder games and Dirt to Daytona (Winston)
Yakuza 0 (Hi-Lite)

2023.06.04 18:56 oycetheoyster Trip Recap 5/28-6/3

We spent six nights in New Orleans. Originally, we booked the Marriott off of Canal but had issues (broken toilet and no additional rooms) and thankfully was able to move across the street to the JW Marriott. It was so much nicer, newer and cleaner (thanks chase!)
Breakfast: Bearcat CBD: Really delicious. Had the cat daddy and the blue crab omelet. Great coffee. ~30 min wait but worth it
Willa Jean: Also very delicious. Had the crawfish roll and shrimp and grits. Lots of crawfish. If I had to nitpick, the shrimp was a little overcooked but still tasty
Beignets (fav to least fav order) 1. Cafe du Monde (French market): crispy, good texture, airy but not too airy, great ratio of powder sugar to beignet. This is what I think of when I think of a beignet. However, I would say the fry is inconsistent. You don’t always get crispy.
  1. Loretta’s: I’d describe this more as a toaster strudel style beignet. It’s more flaky. Delicious and crispy. It gets the 2nd spot bc when I think of beignet, I don’t expect flaky.
  2. Marriot Lounge: This was our dark horse. It was a random beignet we ate in the buffet lounge our first morning. We didn’t even take a picture. It scared us bc we had quite a few beignet duds for the first few days and thought this was our favorite for awhile. Good representation of a pillowy beignet. The sugar to beignet ratio was good. Missing some crispiness.
  3. Cafe du Monde City Park: We may have gotten a bad batch. Kinda denser and larger holes to the point where there was not much inside. Nice crispy crust though.
  4. Criollo at the hotel Monteleone:This was another toaster strudel type of beignet. Good but not crispy like Loretta’s.
  5. Cafe beignet Royal St: this is another example of a pillowy beignet but too much dough to sugar ratio. Tighter crumb. Didn’t feel like eating more than 1.
  6. The Vintage: I really was looking forward to this one. We may have gotten a bad batch, but it was literally empty inside. Like a shell of a beignet. It was a nice crispy crust though. Maybe would have been better to get a filled one.
Mains Willie Chicken Shack: ate this the first night since our flight was delayed. Freshly fried. Really great for late night.
Felix Lakefront: grilled oysters were good. We got a cup of gumbo and it was fine but forgettable.
High Hat: We ate here bc it was near cure. Really delicious. The gulf shrimp was one of our favorite bites from our trip. They make a good pie too.
Cochon: the bread and the sauce from the wood fired oysters was one of our top bites. Oysters themselves lacked some smoky flavor and were a bit overcooked.
Dakar: we went for Wednesday family night. Delicious seafood. Loved it. Went to second vine wine before dinner and they recommended us a great bottle of chenin blanc.
Compere Lapin: I love top chef and Nina but was a bit disappointed. We had to send back the tuna tartare bc it was too salty. I think they cure it. The second one was not much better and lacking acidity. Pig ears were also too salty. Pork belly and fried chicken with coconut grits were great. Could have used some heat. I found the pasta a little fishy but cooked well.
Gris gris: shrimp and grits were delicious. Whole red fish was ok, lacked seasoning, tomato sauce tasted like it came straight from the can. Great espresso martini.
Drinks: Jewel of the south: kinda hit or miss. Drinks were maybe overly complex where it just tasted like a good punch.
Cure: this was our favorite. Interesting and innovative cocktails but also delicious. Would go back.
French 75 bar: had a French 75 and matcha colada. It was good but nothing to write home about.
For gin fizz, we went to bar tonique and bourbon o bar. Bar tonique was better.
Overall, had an amazing trip. We had 120+ bookmarks and only made a small dent. We at so much good food, and loved walking and exploring. This was mostly a food post but just wanted to mention that city park was amazing. The sculpture garden is so good. Can’t wait to come back.

2023.05.27 17:24 shawnstyles01 Your Wedding Flowers - What Are Your Choices?

Your wedding flowers usually tie to your wedding theme. When most of us envision wedding flowers we think of more of the traditional choices but there are literally thousands of flower choices that work very well for wedding bouquets, ceremonies, and receptions.
Here are just a few flower variations to get you thinking. We've divided them by color to help make it easier to fit them to your theme.
YELLOWS/ORANGES
Dahlia - a late summer and fall bloom known for its wide variety of colors. Very affordable and they work great in centerpieces and bouquets.
abstract floral paintings on canvas
Asclepia Beatix - very tiny flowers that throw a lot of punch! A 1" hybrid flower that works well in low arrangements.
Tulip - there are several tulip variants and plenty of color variety. Very affordable and they work great in centerpieces and bouquets.
Ranuculus - a beautiful spring flower but prone to drooping in hot weather. It looks terrific mixed with other flowers.
Chinese Lantern - is known to have 10-15 flowers on a stock so it is excellent for a focal point in centerpieces.
Sandersonia - these little bell shaped flowers work great in boutonnieres, corsages, and in flower girls baskets.
Poppy - Big, beautiful, and very affordable when purchased in its in season, spring. They are definitely an eye catcher!
Black Eyed Susans - The perfect country flower for a country wedding,
Sunflower - blooms from late summer to fall and are available in a variety of colors and sizes. Very popular planted in pots.
Snapdragon - a very graceful and elegant flower that works well with simple bouquets and centerpieces. Reasonably priced, blooming in late summer.
WHITES
Flannel Flower - produces spiky star shaped blossoms that are long lasting. Perfect for both bouquets and arrangements.
Chamomile - is a common wild flower that blooms late summer. Very refreshing and great for wreaths, centerpieces, and bouquets.
Stephanotis - this year round flower is affordable and perfect for bouquets and boutonnieres.
Narcissus - blooms late winter early spring. Its fragrant blooms are great for centerpieces.
Cosmos - blooms in spring and summer. Not so impressive on its own but very glamorous when mixed with other flowers.
Snowberry - blooms late fall through December. Produces small pale fruit that works well in winter bouquets.
peony flower painting
Dogwood - blooms in spring producing large flowers. Very nice in both bouquets and centerpieces.
Iris - many colors and varieties are available. There are iris choices for all four seasons. Very affordable with large blooms making it perfect for large arrangements.
Miniature Calla Lily - works very well in bouquets and centerpieces. There is a warning attached to this flower - it is poisonous to dogs.
BLUES/PURPLES
Veronica - these tiny spiked flowers add grace and elegance to bouquets and centerpieces. They mix well with round flowers.
Clematis - this vine blooms during summer months and is available in many colors and species varieties. It weaves nicely into wreaths,
Celosia - blooms spring through fall producing velvety flowers. Perfect way to add texture to bouquets and centerpieces.
flower canvas painting
Hyacinth - this fragrant flower works well on its own or in arrangements.
Anemone - blooms September through March producing a variety of bright colors. Perfect for adding some color and cheer to this drabber season.
Frittilaria - these checkered flowers are perfect for small arrangements and bouquets.
Scabiosa - blooms spring through summer producing ruffled flowers. It makes a wonderful addition to bouquets and centerpieces.
Gomphrena - has a thistle type bloom and is very hardy. It won't wilt so is perfect for bouquets, boutonnieres, and arrangements. Dries nicely too.
Cornflower - adds a nice fresh touch to bouquets and centerpieces.
Allium - these tiny petal flowers will add glamour. They smell like onions so they work best around food areas.
GREENS
Sand Catchfly - looks like miniature hot air balloons. It adds flare and depth to bouquets and centerpieces.
Spider Chrysanthemum - blooms year round so very affordable. Its spidery petal flowers add charm and excitement to bouquets and arrangements.
gold leaf paintings
Benzelia Lanuginosa - Imported from New Zealand so can be a bit pricey. A wonderful exotic addition to all arrangements.
Nigella Pod - available late summer to early fall adding a sculptured accent to centerpieces.
Seeded Eucalyptus - very versatile adding texture to a centerpiece. It can easily be sprayed with metallic spray paint and it dries nicely.
Lady's Slipper - very expensive but ever so exotic. Perfect for a corsage or bouquet. To pricey for table arrangements.
Solomon's Seal - the bell shaped flowers work well in casual bouquet and centerpieces. It works well with lilies.
Fern - work well for fillers on bouquets and centerpieces. It presses nicely so also can be used for accenting menus or cards.
PINKS/REDS
Rose Hip - the post blossom fruit of the rose makes great filler for bouquets as well as all arrangements.
Vallota - bloom summer through fall producing 2" flowers shaped like a lily. Their smaller size makes them fit much better into arrangements.
Fringed Gerbera Daisy - these miniature flowers are whimsical and work well in bouquets. They also have a nice touch when floated in a bowl or brandy glass.
Tree Peony - blooms late fall to early winter in New Zealand. Because they are imported they are pricey. However, they certainly stand out and add color to a cooler season wedding.
Astrantia - this is an eye catching bloom that mixes well but stands out.
Cymbidium Orchid - perfect for corsages but also works well in large displays. Nicely scented it works well on table tops or floated in a bowl or glass. Floated in a martini glass adds a real nice touch!
Carousel Illusion Rose - this very large hybrid flower works well in bouquets and arrangements.
Antique Rose - this beautiful rose is very hard to come by and thus extremely pricey. However if you are looking for something romantic and rare this flower is a must have. Add to your bouquet for your own personal joy!
Curcuma - a tropical flower that blooms mid summer. Adds character to a bouquet or arrangement.
Flower choices are endless. I've only covered just a handful of what's available. If your wedding is spring through fall learn what flowers are native to your area.
You may be pleasantly surprised at what is available and of course the pricing will be much better on local flowers. If you're looking for those more exotic flowers then set a budget and start checking early.
This will give you an idea of what is available in your budget range. Remember exotic and tropical flower prices can change dramatically in one season depending on availability.
You may be able to get a florist to lock into pricing or at least set a guarantee of the maximum price for your future wedding date. Often local florists grow some of the tropicals in their greenhouses to that may also help keep the pricing a little more affordable.

Alceo Dossena was one of the most enigmatic and fascinating figures of the art world: He created authentic masterpieces that were attributed by scholars and museum and gallery directors from time to time to Giovanni and Nino Pisano, Simone Martini, Vecchietta, Amadeo, Donatello, Mino da Fiesole, Desiderio da Settignano, Andrea del Verrocchio, Antonio Rossellino and other famous masters of the past, all works that no one ever suspected could have been created by a contemporary sculptor.
Married in 1900 to Emilia Maria Ruffini, he moved to Parma where he stayed until 1915, working together with the stonemason Umberto Rossi. The two set up a small company that worked for churches and cemeteries. At the outbreak of the First World War, he was enlisted in the air force, sent to Perugia and later transferred to Rome to work in a military depot.
At the end of the war he settled permanently in Rome, producing terracotta and marble reliefs. One of his works aroused the interest of the antiquarian Alfredo Fasoli, who began commissioning Dossena to produce sculptures in the antique style in order to resell them as originals.
These sculptures possessed a quality that can rarely be found in the works of a forger: they had the power of originality, for they were not copies of known specimens, but models created from scratch, simply made according to the stylistic dictates and execution techniques of classical antiquity, Romanesque, Gothic or Renaissance.Often produced in collaboration with his sons Alcide and Walter, they were of such extraordinarily high quality that some less-than-honest Italian dealers placed them abroad, particularly in the United States, where they are exhibited in some of the major museums. Until the time of the great scandal (1928), when the sculptures were recognised as fakes, they were considered by scholars to be original works.

Rumours had already been circulating for some years concerning the authenticity of some of the works, which were increasingly arriving at foreign museums. In 1928, it was Dossena himself who declared himself to be the author of these works after he had broken an agreement with Fasoli and other antiquarians who commissioned works of quality from him but rewarded him with modest sums.
The antiquarians involved tried to hush up the scandal, but Dossena was nevertheless taken to court, where, thanks to the defence of fellow Fascist hierarch and lawyer Roberto Farinacci, he was acquitted for insufficient evidence. It was argued that he was a victim of speculation by antiquarians. At this point, his name became internationally famous, and Dossena began to sign his works.
Recently, a monumental Deposition from the Cross has been attributed to him, which is located in France in the parish church of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, a town just outside Paris. It is a sculpture inspired by Benedetto Antelami’s Deposition from the Cross, preserved in the cathedral of Parma, dating back to 1178. The work was donated to the church by the family of Arnaud-Marie Duperrier (1864-1941), a French sculptor and art dealer who had bought it and transported it to France from Parma, where it was made, presumably on commission, in the Dossena-Rossi workshop between 1908 and 1912.
A further piece of information confirming the attribution of the paternity of this work to Alceo Dossena is provided by the archaeologist and collector Ludwig Pollak, former director of the Barracco Museum in Rome, who writes in his memoirs: “Born in Cremona, class of 1878, taken in by a foundling home because he was an illegitimate child, he became a stonemason and moved to Parma in 1908, where he made his debut with his imitations (such as that of Benedetto Antelami’s Deposition from the Cross in the Duomo)”.
Other important speeches that delve into the events of the Cremonese artist come from Romano Ferrari, who retraced the memories of a journalist, Giovanni, who witnessed the last years of Alceo Dossena’s life, which, although fictionalised, give new as well as true facets of the figure of this Italian sculptor and forger.

2022.10.20 23:59 oldmanskane Review of The Car

“Don’t get emotional” Turner sings in Mirrorball. Fast forward to Perfect Sense and watch me shed a tear for the first time in years. My invisible streak shattered in a thousand pieces of sadness and hope. Inbetween days and songs of darkness and dance. Sculptures, Helloes and cinematic embraces. Owl shrieks and Martinis at the sunnyside of town.
What a time to be alive, afterall.

2022.01.08 17:56 DjTellsTales The Legend of Jackhammer

Kyle 'Jackhammer' Holmes was a legend in the porn industry, with the physique of a Renaissance sculpture and a penis that made even above average guys feel insecure.
He acquired the nickname Jackhammer after one of his first scenes. Former adult performer Laurie Starr, whom he shared that scene with, had said she could barely walk for days afterwards.
"He fucked me like a jackhammer; I have no regrets."
He featured in 207 adult movies during his career with no gender preference.
Known for his relentless pounding, he could remain hard for hours and cum on command. Only the most seasoned performers could handle a scene with him. Some tried and failed; not all could take it.
No one knew his story, only that he landed on the LA porn scene with a BANG! Behind the scenes he was deeply private, though the few that knew him personally said he was just a pretty face.
"Ah, dead behind the eyes that one. Coke and fucking; that's as deep as he gets."
Except one.
Darcy Jacobs, once a prolific adult performer herself, claimed he was a paranoid and tortured soul. According to Jacobs they'd had many personal conversations, and he was terrified of "unseen forces". From an interview with People:
"We'd meet for vodka martinis and he'd end up in my arms, quivering. He said 'they' were coming for him, he could hear them whispering. It was frightening!"
Holmes was found dead in his Santa Monica townhouse several years ago.
His penis had been severed, a bloody knife in his hand. He'd bled out on the bed. There were no signs of struggle, only his fingerprints were found on the handle. There was a handwritten note on the nightstand:
To whoever cares
Years ago, I was a UCLA student getting wasted in a dingy bar off Sunset Boulevard. A stranger offered me my deepest desire in exchange for a future sacrifice.
I played along with the freak, said I wanted to fuck. A lot.
I don't even remember how, only that I had transitioned from a nobody to this beast overnight.
The voices have been haunting me for months, telling me to pay what I owe. I'm seeing things in mirrors too, wretched things with horns and jagged teeth.
I forgot who I was, who I used to be. The voices... they reminded me of the deal I foolishly made. I brought this on myself.
As I sit here terrified, alone, I can tell you it wasn't worth it.
Never entertain a stranger who promises you the world.
Kyle
Rumours spread, as they do. The most popular being that the note was planted, a staged suicide. Possibly drug related or a jealous rival. Others say the pressure got to him, made him crazy. Though the biggest mystery is that his penis was never found.
That's because I keep it in a jar amongst other retrieved debts, a small price to pay for the legend of Jackhammer.
