I recently was invited to visit id Software Studios in Richardson, Texas. Seeing the building in person that I'd mostly seen in NoClip vids immediately felt like when I was a kid going to a theme park - I started imagining what inside was like.
I went up to the building, met outside with the folks who invited me, and headed to the elevators. We first started at the security desk - the guard was the most welcoming yet imposing gentleman you could imagine in that position. He was hilarious, but also very good at outlining boundaries (which were few to be honest).
We toured the initial floor which was filled with lifelike statues and props that made you rethink your perspective of characters and weapons from the games. The life-size and very real & sharp crucible was among my favorite pieces on display. Although the life-size floating revenant was also a sight to behold -- I know we've all effortlessly destroyed those poor bastards in game, but if I saw that thing come to life it'd be horrifying (side note: I'm 6'5 in the photo with the revenant, for scale).
I was also shown several of the audio production studios which are all fitted with great gear and tools to make noise. I've visited some incredible game studios over the last year (including Riot Games, with whom I'm currently composing music for on 2XKO) and the id Software audio rooms are very dang cool - especially their new modular synth room they're developing. Some of the meeting rooms were filled with even more incredible props and memorabilia.
After walking the initial floor we went to another one that was more of a hybrid workplace and break area. The break room was beautiful (and stocked to the gills with snacks and beverages), lined with glass shelving cabinets packed to the brim with memorabilia, historical pieces of id Software releases, toys, gadgets, books, records, and more -- it was an id Software collector museum.
Something I want to point out that I feel is important is when I arrived, it was lunchtime at id Software -- nearly a hundred employees exited the building at the same time. Everyone was happy, goofing with one another, and seemed very relaxed. Even the employees still in the building in their work areas or break room seemed to be having a good day. One section of the studio was darker, likely a QC area, and there were a handful of folks having a laugh and very friendly as we passed by. I think it's important to think of a game studio as a result of all of the people's hard work, which is something often overlooked from the outside.
Anyway, I know a lot of folks love and enjoy id Software's games and legacy, so I just thought I'd share my experience. I started playing id Software games in the mid 90s with DOOM and Heretic, and the studio has certainly helped shape my interests in games/film/stories/and music. I'm eternally grateful to have been invited to visit.
