AI CHATBOTS ARE INTRUDING INTO ONLINE COMMUNITIES WHERE PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO CONNECT WITH OTHER HUMANS

A parent asked a question in a private Facebook group in April 2024: Does anyone with a child who is both gifted and disabled have any experience with New York City public schools? The parent received a seemingly helpful answer that laid out some characteristics of a specific school, beginning with the context that “I have a child who is also 2e,” meaning twice exceptional. On a Facebook group for swapping unwanted items near Boston, a user looking for specific items received an offer of a “gently used” Canon camera

WHAT ARE DEEPFAKES AND SHOULD WE BE WORRIED?

Deepfakes are creating havoc across the globe, spreading fake news and pornography, being used to steal identities, exploiting celebrities, scamming ordinary people and even influencing elections. Yet a worldwide survey found 71% of people have no idea what deepfakes are. Deepfakes are digital photos, videos or voices of real people that have either been synthetically created or manipulated using artificial intelligence (AI) and can be hard to distinguish from the real thing. You’ve probably seen a deepfake video or photo without even realizing it. Computer-generated Tom Cruises,

2024.05.27 21:19 Temporary_Quit_4648 Rabbit wants us to look at the patent, so let's do that...

Since Rabbit, Inc. likes to cite their patent as the evidence of the LAM's existence, why don't we take a look? Others can do a deeper dive, but this is what stood out to me:
  1. The patent doesn't go into much technical detail about HOW the LAM (or "Interface Model", to use the patent's terminology) is actually trained or functions.
  2. The patent makes liberal use of the broad term "configure," which might be for strategic reasons, but because the term is so broad, it leaves open the possibility for the whole thing to be done manually by humans.
  3. The Interface Model is said to operate through either 1) "auto-formalization" or 2) selecting among "preset workflows" (e.g., Playwright scripts), but there is considerably more emphasis on the selection among preset workflows than on the auto-formalization aspect. In fact, auto-formalization isn't referenced in the critical "claims" section until claim 13 of the 19 claims, and all it says is that the system "uses" one.
Some choice snippets: https://patents.justia.com/patent/11908476
an intention model configured to translate a user intention into one or more actions without receiving explicit step by step execution instructions from the user;
an interface model in communication with the intention model and configured to translate one or more requests from the intention model into a sequence of user interface (UI) actions on one or more target applications; and
an action executor in communication with the interface model and configured to execute the sequence of UI actions on the one or more target applications.
The selected agent(s) 104 initiates interaction with products and/or services over a network to achieve goals that satisfy the user's intentions.
Finally, the system is preloaded with a huge set of preset workflows to represent common interface interaction patterns across consumer apps. (Step 404) As such, at any point in this process, if the Interface Model 404 decides that what is shown in the demonstration is similar enough to a preset, the model 404 can make “a shortcut” and return the preset that has been identified.
The Interface Model 404 can be equipped with a large set of workflows, which are defined as a known sequence of UI actions across a series of applications. These workflows can be robust up to minor adjustments of UI components. In one embodiment, for most high-frequency consumer-facing cases, there are at most 50-60 distinct workflows within an application, even for complex actions that require using multiple apps. The dynamic model 414 can first attempt to assign a request to an existing workflow before falling back to auto-formalization.
Interface Model 404 is the key for the OS to learn to see the web and interact with the applications on the web as a human would.
FIG. 6 is a diagram illustrating the exemplary operation of the Interface Model 600, according to an embodiment of the disclosure. First, unstructured demonstrations (e.g., video recording) 602 and structured demonstrations (e.g., DOM change stream) 604 are fed into the Static Model 606 of the Interface Model 600. These demonstrations can be generated by the end-users directly, or could originate from external labeling forces. Unstructured demonstrations may go through UI component localization and segmentation 608 before being sent to the Static Model 606. Static Model 606 performs UI identification, classification and visual relationship detection on a target app. Based on the output from the Static Model 606 and workflow presets (e.g., sequency of Agent Host actions) 610, Dynamic Model 612 of the Interface Model 600 can perform auto-formalization, workflow identification and translation to enable interaction with the target application.
  1. The system of claim 12, wherein the demonstration model uses an auto-formalization process of creating a formalized system that approximates observed UI interactions.

Slime Shop of the Week #5 - Slime Shop Cafe
Good morning, everyone! Grab a cup of coffee because today's feature is Slime Shop Cafe! Also, check out their most recent restock!

Basic Info

Long Answer Questions

What inspired you to start your slime shop? I was inspired to start my slime shop after watching some of those viral slime videos on Instagram back in 2020. One particular food slime DIY from a bigger shop caught my eye—it looked like art, and as an artist to my core, I was instantly hooked. I love using various mediums to express myself, and slime quickly became my new favorite. What started as a passion for the art of slime evolved into something more when I learned how slime can help people with texture and dexterity issues. Knowing that my creations could bring joy and aid others made me fall in love with slime even more. I wanted to do it right, so I got my business certification in administration and marketing. Running my slime shop is not just about the art and the fun; it's also about furthering my education in as many areas as I can.
How do you ensure the quality and safety of your slime products? Ensuring the safety, quality, and cleanliness of my products is incredibly important to me—partly because I'm a bit of a germaphobe, haha! Having a medical background, I understand disease prevention, so I take extra care in my slime-making process. I make sure all surfaces are sanitized, hair tied back, and my hands/forearms are always sanitized and gloved when in the production process. My top priority is always delivering a clean, safe, and high-quality product.
Can you describe your typical day in the life as a slime shop owner? A typical day for me revolves around all things slime! I wake up thinking about new designs and check social media and emails. Then, I update my work list, which has all the order details I'll be fulfilling that day. Half of my day is dedicated to quality checks and production, especially as I prepare for the Friday restock. In the evenings, I focus on research and development, trying to squeeze in meals and other "human" things, haha. There are many walking trails near me, so I'll go for a walk or run and will usually be on my phone doing slime shop things. My favorite part of the day is creating labels and marketing materials using Adobe Suite. I've been using Adobe for years, and I taught myself 3D art and graphic design, which lends a helping hand to the task of making label art. Editing videos is something I absolutely love and do daily, usually towards the very end of the day; I usually fall asleep doing this. I use CapCut and Adobe Suites for editing. In short, my day is filled with slime-making, editing, bookkeeping, and communication with my extended team, though they are not usually involved in daily operations.
What do you enjoy most about being a part of the slime community? I love feeling connected with people, especially across the globe, and that's one of the things I adore about the slime community. It's amazing to see people from all over the world using slime for various reasons, and being part of that makes me feel at home. When I discovered the Reddit community, I was happy to see how open and helpful everyone is—it really feels like a welcoming family, and I try to contribute where I can as well. The support here is amazing, and I deeply appreciate everyone's kindness.
How do you balance running your slime shop with other aspects of your life? Huh? Personal life? Lol! Balancing my slime shop with other aspects of my personal life is definitely challenging, but I try my hardest. I make sure to get my walks and workouts in and usually take a break on weekends, like Friday or Saturday, to enjoy something other than slime with friends or family. Although I love slime and it fulfills many needs for me, it's important to have a variety of activities. Living close to the beach and not too far from the mountains is amazing. I love exploring them as they often inspire new slime ideas. Even when I'm out and about, I find inspiration for my next slime drop.
What's the quirkiest slime creation you've ever made? One of my quirkiest slime creations was called "Unalive" for last year's spooky season. It had a red jelly slime base and included little body parts and a chunk of "meat" with a bone inside. It looked kind of gross and spooky, but it was definitely memorable! I used a jelly cube sponge, stuck a bone charm in the middle, and shaped it like a chunk of meat. xD
If your slime shop had a theme song, what would it be? I love music, and I'm surprised I haven't done more music-themed slime drops at this point, so picking a theme song for my slime shop is tough because there are so many great options imo. Given my shop's vibe and name, I'd probably choose a lo-fi café style song. Maybe a lo-fi version of "505" by Arctic Monkeys would be the vibe.
Can you share a funny or memorable moment from your slime-making journey? One memory from my slime journey involves working with floam beads. I didn't realize how light and staticky they were. Even after painting them, I had to be really careful not to spill them because they're so light. One day, I made popcorn beads painted as yellow. When I went to transfer them from the tray to their bags, the first pour went everywhere! I laughed at myself because I did not expect that. When I came back with the broom and dustpan to clean it up, I stopped to admire them because of how much they looked like real popcorn on the floor! It was both funny and a little sad because they were wasted. To this day, I still find little popcorn beads here and there, like confetti of a New Year's Eve party.
Describe your ideal slime-making environment. Is there a specific setting, music, or ambiance that inspires your creativity? During my creative processes, I often like to have bright light and music playing in the background or even just the sounds of nature. Most of the time, I find myself deep in thought, juggling all the different tasks and checklists I need to accomplish that day, so if I do have music playing, it's usually during repetitive tasks that don't require much mental focus like when I'm working on label art on the computer.
If you could create a slime inspired by any movie or TV show, which one would it be and why? (Movie spoiler alert!) I created a slime drop themed after the new Godzilla x Kong movie. Kong's Tooth has been a top seller in my shop to date. I've always been drawn to classic characters like Godzilla and King Kong, and this movie brought a modern twist with other Titans and a bit of magic effects. What made this movie stand out for me was how they worked together instead of fighting each other, which is a plot twist for these two giants. Plus, the visual art and special effects were amazing and inspiring.
Share a story behind a slime name that holds a special meaning to you. "Slightly Awkward Kind of Weird" is a title that holds special meaning for me. They're lyrics inspired from a song that's out right now as well, but it perfectly captures how I felt in school. The label art for that slime really reflects my feelings of alienation during high school and middle school. I was very quiet and more on the antisocial side, even though I had friends. Over time, I've worked on becoming more social, and online communities have helped me with that a lot.
Do you have any lucky charms or rituals you perform before making slime? Yes, I put on my slime apron, and slime work shoes then tie my hair back.
How do you come up with names for your slime products? Any favorites? Sometimes, I start with a specific theme or story idea and then name the slimes accordingly. Other times, I have certain slimes in mind and try to fit them into a theme. Charms or fragrances I'm using can also inspire the names. There's no strict rule for how I come up with names, but they're always related to different components of the slime and weekly theme. Sometimes I am inspired by social media trends and will create slimes such as "Floor Slime", "Bar-bie Sauce", and "Why's It Spicy?".
Describe a time when a slime experiment didn't go as planned. What happened, and how did you recover? I experimented with a new brand of instant snow, and it was not what I expected. It turned out to be very chunky, which initially left me disappointed, especially since I had used a whole gallon of glue for the experiment. Lesson learned; never make experiments that big again, haha! I now make prototypes of each slime before making the larger batch, which turns into video content. But I turned the setback into an opportunity and posted a video about it and received feedback on the texture. The texture resembled crushed ice, so I decided to call it exactly that—crushed ice slime. Despite the typical snow fallout, I adjusted the base texture to hold the snow better, and over time, the texture grew on me. I ended up selling it as a crushed ice texture. I even plan to bring it back this summer!
Is there another slime shop you admire or love to support? If so, why do you recommend them to the community? Exploring other slime shops and testing their products is something I haven't had much chance to do yet, but it's definitely on my to-do list. Before starting my own shop, I did purchase some slimes from the larger shops for research purposes. I was disappointed by the usuals mentioned in this community, but the best learning was through Youtube videos of random channels! So I recommend the YouTube slime community videos. Since then, I have discovered various textures through experimentation that end up reminding me of other shop’s textures that I see on Instagram. It reminds me that no matter where our journey timeline is, we can all achieve the same things through time and experimentation, creating our own unique slimes, offering the slime community a variety of slimes unique to our shop!

Thank you for serving up slime, Sabby! Now, for some questions for the community!
  1. What's your favorite slime creation from Slime Shop Cafe?
  2. Do you have any questions for the owner about their slime-making process or shop?
  3. Are there any specific themes or types of slime you'd love to see from Slime Shop Cafe in the future, or anything you'd like to see return?

2024.05.27 12:23 OscarWilde02 Is Richard III at the Globe Theatre worth it?

Hi guys, I’m thinking of watching Richard III at the Globe Theatre but it’s £80. The show ends in August so I’m scared I’ll get FOMO if i don’t go in the next few weeks.
For anyone whose seen it recently, would you recommend it? I studied the play for A levels and loved it.
I know I can get cheap standing tickets but I am unable to stand still for that long lol.

How can I add a Progress-dependant condition in this Habit tracker formula?
Here is what I'm working with : https://yokiie.notion.site/Habit-Tracker-Test-137f81ceb8c64d48bd7c1293e364ec0b?pvs=4 (You can use the "Duplicate" feature to copy my setup and edit it to see the formulas etc)
My current setup :
  • A database called "Habit To Do" where I list my habits as tasks. The important field related to my question is called "Status" and can be either set to "To Do" or "Done".
https://preview.redd.it/h5etebqfru2d1.png?width=437&format=png&auto=webp&s=4d5266708cd89f5d72a6b635220c776031c921b6
  • Another database used for the formula, to visualize on which days I have completed my habit. It currently contains two different version of the "Diagram" formula, a small compact one and a bigger one. I'm trying to combine both of their functionalities.
https://preview.redd.it/xfvaq75yru2d1.png?width=361&format=png&auto=webp&s=c6bfa33e1feab258349988b74d737a217ee14c49
The small view formula has a feature I want to include in the big view formula (but don't know how to) : I used .filter(current.Status=="Done") to make only the completed tasks be displayed as "√" and "●" in the small view's formula. However, on the big view's formula, it currently adds a "●" as soon as an item exists in the database for that day, no matter the value in the Status field. So, how do I make the big view's formula only display a "●" for the tasks who's Status field is set to "Done" ?
The formulas for both views were made by two different people so the structure is really hard for a beginner like me to modify, I've been trying for hours with no success.
Here is the full formula for both (or you can see it directly on the page I linked at the beginning of the post)

Small View

lets( color,!prop("Color")?"green":prop("Color"), m1,formatDate(now(),"YYYY-MM").parseDate(), mz,m1.dateAdd(2,"month").dateSubtract(1,"day"), w1, m1.week(), wz,mz.week(), d1,m1.day(), dz,mz.day(), w,[w1,w1+1,w1+2,w1+3,w1+4,wz].unique(), w.map(lets(week,current, wd,prop("To Do").filter(current.prop("Due Date").week()==week).filter(current.prop("Status")=="Done"), d,[1,2,3,4,5,6,7], d.map(lets(day,current, r,wd.filter(current.prop("Due Date").day()==day), (r.length()>0?(day==now().day()?(week==now().week()?"√".style("b"):"●"):"●").style(color):" ").style(day==now().day()?(week==now().week()?"u":""):""). style(median(w1+1,week,wz-1)==week? color+"_background":(week==w1?(day>=d1?color+"_background":""):(day<=dz?color+"_background":"")),"c"))).join(" ") )).join("\n"))

Big View

lets( color,!prop("Color")?"green":prop("Color"), weeksNum,ifs(prop("Period") == "Month",5,prop("Period")=="Quarter",13, prop("Period") == "Half Year", 26, 52), dateFormat, "MMMM D, Y", weekLabels, ["Sun", "Mon", "Tue", "Wen", "Thu", "Fri", "Sat", "Sun"].map(current.style(color, "grey_background","c")), readingRecords, prop("To Do").map(formatDate(current.prop("Due Date"),dateFormat)), today, day(now()), startOfthisWeek, if(today==7,now(),dateSubtract(now(),today,"days")), firstSunDate, dateSubtract(startOfthisWeek, weeksNum, "weeks"), placeHolder,["M","M","M"].map(" ".style("grey_background","grey","c","b")).join(""), monthLabel, repeat(" ",weeksNum+1).split("") .map(dateAdd(firstSunDate,index,"weeks")) .map(ifs(date(current)<=4, formatDate(current,"MMMM").split("").at(0), date(dateAdd(current,3,"days"))<=4, formatDate(dateAdd(current,3,"days"),"MMMM").split("").at(0), "◌")) .map(current.style(color,color+"_background","c","b")) .join(" "), grid, [0,1,2,3,4,5,6] .map(repeat(current,if(today>=current && today!=7,weeksNum+1,weeksNum)).split("") .map(dateAdd(firstSunDate, index*7 + toNumber(current), "days")) .map(formatDate(current,dateFormat)) .map(if(includes(readingRecords,current),"●"," ").style(color+"_background","c")) .join(" ") ) .map(weekLabels.at(index) +" "+ current) .join("\n"), placeHolder+" "+ monthLabel + "\n"+grid )
Thank you so much to anyone who's willing to help !

2024.05.26 18:29 martinkoistinen M3 Hub IR Blaster vs. Frigidaire Through Wall Unit

Hi all,
I just received my Aqara M3 Hub. After connecting to my network and updating its firmware (to 4.1.4_0017), I attempted to pair it with my Frigidaire through-wall AC Unit (FFTH122WA2). I have its remote control, but I really wanted this to connect to my Smart Home.
It couldn't pair to the unit. I tried multiple times. It is possible I didn't understand the instructions though, because they don't seem very clear. Here's the instructions I was presented (in bold) and what I did:
1. "Please use the remote control to turn on the air conditioner"
It was already on, so I pointed my remote at the AC unit and turned it off and on again. I then pressed the "Confirm" button.
2. "Please point the remote at the device and press temperature + button."
On this step, Aqara went out of their way to add a diagram of a generic device pointed at another device labeled "Air Conditioning". I can only interpret this to mean I'm supposed to use my remote control to increase the temperature one degree, pointing it at the AC unit. My guess is it plans to figure out which AC unit this is by sensing how the AC unit responds to a temperature-up signal.
But, this didn't seem to do anything (except, increase the temperature by one degree on the AC unit), so, I pointed my remote at the Hub and tried again. This seemed to advance the process to the next step.
3. "Click the button below, Then determine if responds correctly"
Here, it's extra confusing. Remember from step 1 above, I was asked to turn on my air conditioner. So, it is currently ON. This step presents me with a blue, on-screen power button labeled "Power" or (sometimes) "Turn on". It's already on? Is this supposed to turn it off? Should I have turned off the AC unit before this step?
I went through all 6 attempts (different code-sets, I presume) and nothing changed, so, I repeated this process but turned off the AC unit before getting to step 3. Unfortunately, I got no response either way.
Anyway, has anyone figured out how to configure the hub for this unit? Or, did I do something wrong above?

2024.05.26 18:19 JabberwockPL Three questions concerning a load-sensing joystick

As my conversion of old X36 to Hall sensors came out somewhat disappointing, now I am eyeing conversion to load sensors. However, I have three questions:
  1. Most project descriptions recommend using four 50 kg load cells. It seems to me a bit excessive - after all, Wii Balance Board uses the same for whole body movement. I understand that there will be some leverage due to the stick length but still I am somewhat worried that sensitiivity will be
  2. Most diagrams with HX711 concern weighing, i.e. single composite indication. The only one I have found for a joystick is for Adafruit, which has pin labelled by color, not letters (E+ etc.). Is the pinout exactly the same?
  3. Some descriptions recommend just cutting the trace to the freq setting pin of HX711. Is it really enough that it is floating and not pulled to ground? I understand that connecting it to voltage would be somewhat more difficult...

2024.05.26 17:37 Midnight_Narrow mixed feelings

i don’t know why the fuck i can’t get you out of my head. it’s been over a year and i’m literally across the globe. i’ve come to the realization lately after some uh experimentation that i’m pretty sure i’m asexual maybe aromantic as well but that’s still a ?? and not as sure, and that for me has shed so much light on how we broke up. i said shit about how we were long distance and acted like friends, so we should just change our label back to friends bc that’s how we acted. we wouldn’t talk for days on end and both of us were okay with that and i still stand by the fact that i believe we had drifted long before i brought it up. by the time we actually had the conversation i had already mentally detached because it happened naturally all i did was put a name to what was already happening. and you agreed! you freaking agreed! then the next day it all went to shit. you suddenly back tracked saying i was wrong and i was the bad guy and then next thing you know i was blocked from everything. i don’t know how you can act like we have no happy memories now because we didn’t end up working out romantically our entire friendship and shared friends went down the drain. i went from an entire support system to absolutely nobody. but i can’t bring myself to look back on our shared memories with anything but fondness. and i wish i could still be apart of everyone’s life and know how your alls stories are going. but i can’t because i know you probably told all of our mutual friends every last terrible thing you think of me. and then i see online that you literally moved on NOT EVEN a whole month after we broke up with what i thought was a mutual friend no less? who also when i checked was in a relationship a month previous when we broke up? how the fuck did that happen? honestly i’m not even mad about it, y’all are cute, but that itself means that i was right? how can you make me out to be the bad guy for pointing out when our feelings had changed when if you truly still were in love with me at the time of our break up there’s no way you could have moved on completely into a new long term relationship with someone who As Far As I Was Aware was completely platonic? i wish you could have seen i was right, we could have stayed friends. i see no reason why the fuck you were so dramatic when i was right in the end ????? and you still have the audacity to swipe up with throw up emojis on the instagram stories of the literal one person i still have? not even for any reason just because i exist or some shit and that makes you angry. all the fucking anger makes me wonder how much you ever actually liked me in the relationship when the moment you could express your true feelings they were nothing but awful. did you feel that way the whole time? i still wish nothing but the best for you, i always have, despite my language i’m still barely even angry. i’m mostly just annoyed especially since i am constantly trying to get my own shit together and you’ve randomly just, started appearing in my dreams? not even romantically, sometimes your current partner and the rest of The Brazil Gang are there too, my brain has just randomly decided y’all are reoccurring cast members? there’s no romantic or sexual feelings in these dreams, y’all are just There as reminders. which is quite annoying honestly. i can’t change if you hate me and chose to believe we weren’t already drifted apart and probs tell a twisted tale of how the break up went, but bro leave my dreams alone

Mock Map of the Camp 30 Grounds.
Was wondering if somebody could tell me if this is correct. Are the names of the buildings in the correct spot? I couldn’t find a diagram/labeled document of the property but I am aware of the names given to the buildings. Wanted to know if the buildings are labeled correctly.

2024.05.26 16:29 Ghost-Quartet PSA: We need to stop saying "pure pop," we sound dumb.

Dozens of other pure pop stars — that is, artists not drawing from, say, hip-hop, Latin or country — including Madison Beer and Reneé Rapp, have tried, and failed, to achieve this kind of mainstream success...
The New York Times recently published an article wherein they used the term "pure pop" to describe the music of Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Madison Beer, and Renee Rapp, and there was some discourse in the comments that I thought deserved its own post because it's something that a lot of users don't seem to be aware of.

tl;dr: the term "pure pop" is low-key racist and we shouldn't use it anymore.

Now, I want to be 100% clear that I am not saying you, personally, are a racist and a bad person for using the term. This isn't a callout post. But there's so much prejudiced baked into our culture and the language and I'm going to try to break it down a bit to hopefully help people understand why we need to leave the term behind.
(Disclaimer: I'm not black and I'm speaking about black issues in this post but I've linked statements and articles from people who are black, and I recommend you read them if you have the chance!)

Pure? I'm not so sure.

Let's look at the term itself: "pure" pop
Pure of what exactly?
The generous answer to that question is "influences outside of pop," which is the definition the New York Times article gave, but that seems like a bit of a copout. Number one because it's kind of cheating to using the term "pop" to describe itself, but number two, influences from "outside" of pop are kind of a big part of our modern understanding of pop.
Pop music as we know it today did not emerge fully formed like Athena from the head of Max Martin, it is the product of generations worth of influences from many different genres and movements.
Take a look at the Wikipedia page for "Pop Music" and you'll notice that the more you read, the more obscure the actual definition of the term becomes. There's some effort to make a distinction between pop as in "popular music" and pop as a distinct genre, but the hallmarks of that genre are vague as hell. We can nail down specific sounds and definitions for dance-pop, bubblegum pop, synth-pop, electropop, teen-pop, disco, blue-eyed soul, traditional pop, musical theatre, but just plain "pop" is more of a state of mind than anything else.

A "pure" version of pop does not exist

"Espresso," the hottest "pure" pop song at the moment, is heavily indebted to the disco and funk sounds of the '70s (with the music video making the vintage inspirations explicit). The much-lauded Chappell Roan draws heavily from rock and musical theatre. Princess of pop Britney Spears's early music was heavily inspired by what the r&b artists of her era were doing and fits into the sub-genre of teen pop.
Different forms of popular music from different eras, all of which equally lay claim to the term "pop." Just throwing the adjective "pure" at them doesn't really tell us much about an artist's music... but it definitely does imply something.

RACE???

Up-and-coming pop act Rachel Chinouriri got some attention on social media when she opened up about her experience in the music industry, describing how once she started posting pictures of herself, suddenly people had all these ideas about her. It didn't matter that her influences were all rock, indie, and synthpop, once people knew she was black, the labels on her music changed.
There has been much, much discourse over the years about the term "urban" and how it's been used to deny black artists the same recognition as white artists- the dividing line between "pop" and "urban" songs has less to do with how they sound and more to do with how the singer looks. And I'd argue that the term "pure pop" carries similar connotations, just in a different direction.
Just like black artists get to be "urban," white artists get to be "pure."
Let's pull a quote from another NYT article, the aptly titled "Why Is Everyone Always Stealing Black Music?" from 2019:
Americans have made a political investment in a myth of racial separateness, the idea that art forms can be either “white” or “black” in character when aspects of many are at least both. The purity that separation struggles to maintain? This country’s music is an advertisement for 400 years of the opposite: centuries of “amalgamation” and “miscegenation” as they long ago called it, of all manner of interracial collaboration conducted with dismaying ranges of consent.
“White,” “Western,” “classical” music is the overarching basis for lots of American pop songs. Chromatic-chord harmony, clean timbre of voice and instrument: These are the ingredients for some of the hugely singable harmonies of the Beatles, the Eagles, Simon and Fleetwood Mac, something choral, “pure,” largely ungrained...
As the title implies, this article is a deep dive into the history of how much of music history has been shaped by white artists stealing from black artists to take advantage of their whiteness to sell black music to the masses, and I choose to focus in on this section because it highlights how the traditional markers of "pop" music that are often associated with "pure" pop are... well... the white ones.

Evolution vs. Intelligent Design (Pop Version)

During the era where mass media consumption of music exploded, songs that fit a certain crooner meets rock and roll sound were the most popular with the youth got very popular, and thus this style was termed "pop." But this style wasn't on top forever, and every generation has birthed its own wave of sounds that became assimilated as pop. '60s doo-wop, '70s disco, '80s synths, '90s r&b, '00s bubblegum, '10s dance music, all left their fingerprints on pop as a genre.
And in recent years as rap, hip-hop, r&b, and Latin music (genres, coincidentally, pioneered by people of color) have eclipsed these older style of pop in popularity, they've become "pop" in their own way, and thus the modern vision of pop music is heavily influenced by all of these genres.
This is a completely natural evolution, but also one that many pop fans have been reluctant to accept. It's all-too-common to see fans in pop spaces eschewing actually popular forms of music (often made by people of color) in favor of comparatively less-popular artists who make synth/bubblegum/electropop, and that's fine! This sub was founded on celebrating artists like this.
But when these fans start complaining about how "mumble rap" is "dominating the charts" and that we need these pop girls to "save pop," while ignoring or underplaying the contributions of black artists making the same kind of music, we start to see ugly patterns emerge.
White artists like Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Dua Lipa, Kim Petras, Allie X, Slayyyter, Ava Max, Lady Gaga, etc., are thrown up on a pedestal as the true inheritors to the mythical throne of pop music that must save the music industry from... what, exactly?
This is why the term "pure pop" is so problematic- it implies that the specific vision of pop reserved for white artists is the true, "pure" version of pop, and artists who seek inspiration outside of that have less of a claim to pop spaces.
Labelling a song "pure pop" literally attempts to segregate it from other genres, to deny it its rightful heritage in service of a mythical ideal that only exists as sold to us by generations of white cultural hegemony. The term itself is antithetical to progress.
And it's also just dumb as hell, so...

Please just be nice

To quote a Vice article about "The Plight Of The Black Pop Star:"
How does one exist as a Black pop musician when pop music has been defined to exclude parts of you?
I've talked a lot about the burden placed on black artists in this post, but let's take a second to talk about the burden placed on black pop fans, and more broadly, any pop fans of color.
Speaking strictly as an Asian person, it can sometimes be alienating to exist in pop spaces because they sometimes don't feel like they're made for me. Most pop stars don't look like me, and when they do, people get weird about it. I get used to experiencing little microaggressions, to gritting my teeth any time an Asian issue comes up and I know I'm gonna have to fight tooth claw and nail with white fans who refuse to understand my perspective.
And so I can only imagine what black pop fans have to go through.
Which is why, if even after all of this you still believe that there's no problem with the term "pure pop," you still shouldn't use it. When you use the term "pure pop," regardless of your intentions, you will be making other people feel less welcome in pop spaces.
So maybe it's time to scrub that one from the vernacular. Just saying "pop" works just as easily.
Anyways, why don't we have Beyoncé sing us out.

Basic Amp Impedance Help - Blues DeVille 212
This is my first post on this sub, so, hello!
I’m having trouble making sense of the impedance / speaker config of my Fender Blues DeVille 212. It’s cream colored (not tweed), and if I understand the QA sticker dating correctly, it was made in 1995.
Not sure if the picture will come through, so this is what it says: - Parallel speaker jacks 60w 8ohm total - Diagram that shows internal speaker jack is on left and ext speaker jack is on right when you look at back of amp.
I have only a basic understanding of impedance, so I thought someone on here may be able to help. The speakers themselves don’t have any specs on them that I’m able to see other than a “made for Fender by Eminence” brand label.
The amp is exceedingly heavy, so I’m considering replacing the speakers with lighter neo magnet speakers. I’d like to know the impedance of the speakers I’ll need if I want to replace both speakers. I’m also considering going with a higher wattage single speaker setup, so I’d like to know what impedance I’d need the single speaker to be if I go that route.
Really appreciate in advance any/all help.
