2024.05.28 20:04 Bobala Did anyone else who pays the PFA and SHS taxes get erroneous “late payment” letters?

This weekend I received two letters from the city saying that I owe penalties and interest for “filing late, paying late and/or underpayment” of the Preschool for All (PFA) and Metro Supportive Housing (SHS) taxes. I actually filed and paid both taxes April 11th and can see that the money was pulled from my bank account on that date. The amount paid matches what the city is saying was due on these letters. So, this looks like a mistake.
When I called the city, I was put in a hold queue and notified that I was caller 183. I’m guessing there were a bunch of other people who got these letters and were equally confused.
Did anyone here also receive these letters in apparent error? Were you able to get through to someone from the city to confirm if this is a SNAFU? Or is it possible that I’m misunderstanding something and should have filed earlier? I’ve had similar issues in the past with the city not knowing that I paid the Arts Tax when I had, so I’m thinking this is an error.

2024.05.28 17:29 Peacock-Shah-III The New Order of Cincinnatus National Convention of 1952 Peacock-Shah Alternate Elections

The New Order of Cincinnatus National Convention of 1952 Peacock-Shah Alternate Elections
“We must all hang together or we shall all hang separately.”
Thus quipped Benjamin Franklin as the American colonies joined against the tyranny of George III, the phrase hangs heavy in the imaginations of today’s political opposition. Laden with fears of violence, Chairman Osro Cobb of the Progressive-Federalist National Committee announced the cancellation of the party’s presidential primaries and the formal acquiescence of the party to the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic’s call for a joint presidential nominating convention with the American Liberty League. Yet, with the organization’s President Thomas Schall, once seen as the nearly prohibitive favorite for the nomination, dying in an unforeseen car accident and populist contender Eduardo Chibas taking his own life on live radio, the attempt to unite the opposition must find a candidate able to carry both banners in the face of Philip La Follette’s campaign for a third term.

Clare Boothe Luce waves to her supporters.
Major Candidates:
The following candidates are seen as frontrunners for the nomination.
Clare Boothe Luce: 49 year old Clare Boothe Luce of Connecticut rose to prominence as Henry Luce’s scandal-ridden yet massively popular First Lady, whose charisma would lead to a popular joke that every Luce voter wished they had voted for Clare despite widely known allegations of mutual marital infidelity. Marrying Henry after divorcing her first husband and entering high society as the author of an all-female play, Luce would become First Lady at the young age of 38 and soon emerge as a face of the American home front amidst the Third Pacific War. Describing the nation as having become a “dictatorial bumbledom,” Luce has echoed the anti-New State ethos of the party and is seen as the candidate of establishment conservatives. Criticizing the very slogan of President La Follette, she has argued that the United States cannot “win the peace” as it has not truly won the war until the defeat of international communism. Clare has supported the Zionist project in Alaska, a unified military command to replace the Department of Peace, and the creation of a defense pact among American allies in the Pacific as the centerpiece of an aggressively interventionist foreign policy declaring “if we are no longer willing to fight for it, our Christian democracy is finished." Yet, Luce has also opposed the creation of a stronger international United Nations to replace the powerless Parliament of Nations.
Driven to Catholicism in 1946 following the death of her daughter, even as her ex-president husband gallivanted about with a girlfriend a thousand miles from his wife’s baptism, Luce has emerged as a changed woman, reportedly abandoning her affairs and entering a career in electoral politics with her 1946 election to the Senate. Though Aaron Burr Houston maintained a private devotion to the Church of Rome, Clare has taken her faith with a zeal heretofore unseen in American politics, using the Senate as a pulpit to preach against “materialism” and a spiritual decline as the root of both communism and fascism, slyly suggesting that the rise of the Pentecostal, Immannuelite, and Mormon faiths has come hand-in-hand with the nation’s fascist surge as she has publicly wished that “the whole world would be Catholic.” Despite defenses from Presbyterian former President Luce, Clare’s faith has weakened her amongst convention delegates fearing the alienation of firmly Protestant voters. Yet her charm, wealth, and ability to attract millions in funding from backers such as Henry Ford II while winning key endorsements such as that of Richard Nixon has catapulted her to the front of the field.
W. Lee O’Daniel: 62 year old Senator W. Lee O’Daniel, better known as Pappy, rose to prominence in his late 20s as an architect of domestic policy during Aaron Burr Houston’s third term, being largely credited with the introduction of an old age pension system funded by a consumption tax. After making his way to the fore of Texas politics on his own through the integration of musical numbers and a widely popular radio show with his political antics, O’Daniel would turn from an upset gubernatorial defeat in the 1938 midterms to organizing Aaron Burr Houston’s campaign for a fourth term in the White House as the nation’s last hope against Charles Lindbergh. Accused by critics of puppeteering a dementia ridden 86 year old out of his own lust for power, O’Daniel would serve as Secretary of the Treasury for a year before being unceremoniously removed from the cabinet by Henry Luce for his critique of the American attack on Pearl Harbor and opposition to the draft, leaving him in political isolation as the Texan distinguished himself by demanding the execution of striking laborers as crucial to the war effort over his radio show.
A steadfast isolationist, O’Daniel’s foreign policy views have made him a favorite among Liberty League libertarians. Depicting himself as nearly as conservative as Luce on domestic issues with an isolationist foreign policy able to appeal to the Midwest, O’Daniel has emphasized ties to the legendary ABH and anti-alcohol views he claims can over the rural South. O’Daniel has also sought to use Luce’s Catholicism into an issue, seeking the support of Ben Gitlow through their shared membership in the Evangelical Christian Right. Yet, O’Daniel has been seen as the least committed among the candidates to the Committee’s pro-democracy ideals, while others question his fitness for office based on his eccentric manners as a cabinet Secretary and Senator, with Eleanor B. Roosevelt’s 1936 running mate Dan Moody remarking that “Pappy is as lost at the Treasury as I would be in a circus trapeze.
Lucius D. Clay: A distant relative of former President Henry Clay, 54 year old General of the Army turned banker Lucius D. Clay of Georgia has been the subject of a draft movement seeking to secure a candidate with the allure of a war hero after an attack on right wing generals such as Harold George, “some of whom are my own classmates,” accusing them of leading the party astray with the nomination of the ultra-conservative Benjamin Gitlow. Clay has portrayed himself as the candidate of order, supporting, as the others do, the prosecution of Blackshirts and the freeing of prosecuted opposition politicians. However, Clay, a former administrator of Lindbergh-era public works programs, is the only candidate to stop short of supporting the abolition of the New State, with backers instead focusing on the renowned administrative talent that led Douglas MacArthur to quip that Clay “could run General Motors or General Bradley’s army.” Despite his reticence to campaign at the convention, Clay’s moderation, vague platform, connections, and war hero status have won over a significant segment of delegates.
John Sampson Cooper: Named for martyred Admiral William T. Sampson not long after the First Pacific War dramatically ended with the Second Battle of Hawai’i, 50 year old Kentucky Senator John Sampson Cooper has led an underdog campaign of moderate liberals led by young activists Mark Hatfield and Chuck Mathias and Tannenbaum territorial delegate Jacob Javits. Returning home from Yale to find his father on his deathbed and his beloved Pulaski County burned to the ground amidst the Revolution, Cooper would be elected to county leadership at age 24, famously responding to a legal requirement that he evict the impoverished by personally paying their debts, earning the moniker “the poor man’s judge” as he emerged as a major figure in post-Revolutionary reconciliation in Kentucky. Returning home once more from service as a military attache in the Third Pacific War, Cooper would oust incumbent Farmer-Laborite Jerry Spencer in a 1944 upset, delaying taking his seat to serve as a legal advisor to hundreds of thousands of displaced Indonesians before emerging as a Senate leader in bringing the United States closer to India and other nations newly liberated from colonialism.
While eschewing the isolationism of O’Daniel, Cooper has demonstrated a far more relaxed stand on foreign policy than Luce, opposing aggressive anti-communism abroad while depicting the United States as a great mediator of peace in situations such as the violence in Palestine or partition of India. The reported favorite of Fulgencio Batista despite Cooper’s criticism of Batista as insufficiently committed to democracy, the Kentuckian has managed to maintain a widespread popularity with labor that has led many to speculate that Cooper would be the only candidate able to win the endorsement of organized labor and an imprisoned John L. Lewis. Lacking the celebrity draw of Senator Luce, Cooper has countered with a far more detailed platform, calling for the opening of American borders to the world’s refugees, massively increased federal aid to education, and, in stances that have left him anathema to many party conservatives, support for universal health insurance, coal subsidies, and public housing. A self admitted “truly terrible public speaker," Cooper’s political independence has won him the support of Will Rogers Jr. and made him a favorite of the modern liberal wing of the Liberty League.

Roy Acuff strikes up the band.
Minor Candidates:
The following have significant support, but lag behind the frontrunner candidates.
Luis A. Ferre: Among the most grim results of the 1948 elections emerged from the Caribbean, where states once considered the most loyally anti-Farmer-Labor in America crossed the aisle for the first time in history. With strategists seeing the path to the presidency running through the island states, many among the electorally minded have flocked to 48 year old Puerto Rico Senator Luis A. Ferre, publisher of the nation’s largest Spanish language newspaper, El Nuevo Dia. A classically trained pianist who has focused his senatorial career on securing funding for the arts, Ferre has referred to the United States as the “moral summit of the world,” while aligning himself in the middle on economic policy, calling for “addressing the inequalities of society” by selling off public land at a low price and supporting federal public housing with an emphasis on rural revitalization, in addition to a call for a 4% Christmas bonus on the grounds of the Jesus Amendment.
James A. Rhodes: "Every time I take a position on an issue, I lose two percent of the people. If I do that 50 times, I have everybody mad at me," the quip encapsulates the philosophy of 43 year old Ohio Governor James A. “Jim” Rhodes and his backers. Emerging as the favorite of many convention delegates who have argued that the best path forward for a united campaign is a steadfast focus on bread and butter issues, Rhodes has remarked that “there are only three issues in this campaign: jobs, jobs, and jobs,” and has argued that any anti-La Follette campaign must focus on people’s lives and the economy, not vague notions of democracy and American ideals. Born in the hills of Appalachia, Rhodes would be forced out of college after failing every class, only to work his way into the Mayoralty of Columbus, before unexpectedly catapulting himself to the Ohio Governorship before the age of 40, where he has governed with a moderate conservatism focused on local issues such as water rights and a program to "put a college education within 25 miles of every boy and girl” that has been praised as a national model.
Roy Acuff: 49 year old Roy Acuff of Tennessee was christened “The King of Country Music” for smash hits such as Wabash Cannonball, leading fellow musician Hank Williams to quip “book him and you don’t worry about crowds…for drawing power in the South, it’s Roy Acuff, then God.” Yet, after a rumor that Governor Buford Elington had labeled his music “disgraceful,” Acuff would embrace the label “king of the Hillbillies” in the 1948 election cycle to trade his acoustic throne for the Governor’s chair. Declaring that “any business must be put on a business plan, and so must a state government,” Acuff has cut the budget while requiring the Ten Commandments to be posted in government buildings, increasing state pensions, instituting a free school textbook program, cooperating with the La Follette Administration on the hydroelectric Tennessee Valley Authority, and has controversially called for additional restrictions on firearm ownership. Widely considered a possible frontrunner for his celebrity status if a primary were to have been held, Acuff has supported O’Daniel at the convention, yet has evasively refused to disavow a draft movement arising from his pro-union sympathies that many suspect could bring Fulgencio Batista into the fold alongside John L. Lewis, Jimmy Hoffa, and the opposition Farmer-Laborites.
Henry S. Breckinridge: The only member of the Liberty League at the fore of presidential consideration, 66 year old New York Congressman Henry Skillman Breckinridge ran alongside Al Capone in 1936 in the campaign that doomed the Commonwealth alliance, but has reinvented his career since by working to ally Federalist and Liberty League causes against La Follette and serving as the organization’s House leader. Advocating a heavily internationalist vision in line somewhere between that of Cooper and Luce, Breckinridge’s commitment to small government classical liberalism and a strict construction of the constitution has made him the favorite of Liberty League loyalists and some party conservatives. However, it is considered unlikely for a Liberty League member to win outright due to Progressive-Federalists comprising a majority of convention delegates.
Eleanor Butler Roosevelt: 63 year old former President Eleanor Butler Roosevelt was promoted for the nomination for months by her former counsel turned the “voice of impeachment,” Richard Nixon, who has noted that her re-election would have stopped the rise of fascism in its tracks. However, content with retirement, the writing of her memoirs, and the promotion of Nixon’s career, Roosevelt has categorically refused to seek the presidency. Nonetheless, she is expected to receive votes on the convention’s opening ballot from admirers.

Richard Nixon with the California delegation.
The Convention:
District of Columbia police scattered the Immanuelites, holding fliers declaring that their savior had prophesied nuclear armageddon on October 3rd of 1952, but they did not touch the Blackshirts. Ominously, they milled about in the blocks surrounding the convention, brandishing small arms and chants for Phil, as, within, the national convention of the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic proceeded without the pomp and circumstance conventions thrive in, a veil of despair lying over the nearly two thousand delegates in the plaza as they longed from their windows for days past. Further, a rule requiring two thirds of the convention for nomination, instituted by Liberty Leaguers fearful of a tyranny of the majority, would practically guarantee balloting periods stretching long into the night.
The first ballot would open with a surprise, as Roy Acuff rose to rebuff the acolytes of Fulgencio Batista. Pointing to the imprisoned Cuba Governor’s permissive policies towards gambling and prostitution, Acuff would draw a firm line between his pro-labor Christian conservatism and the “moral and political corruption” of Governor Batista. With the vociferousness of the singer’s vituperations and an unexpected willingness to attack Batista personally where other candidates stood largely silent, Acuff would find himself winning extensive support. With the rise of Roy Acuff splintering Pappy O’Daniel’s support, the former Secretary of the Treasury would find himself performing unexpectedly weakly, the beginning of a hemorrhage that would see his support move to Acuff in the first several rounds of balloting. Meanwhile, Clare Boothe Luce would take a lead out of the gate, but soon find that the collapse of Pappy O'Daniel's campaign following a wholesale defection to Acuff would lead other O'Daniel backers to rally behind Clay as an electable alternative. With Luce's lead dwindling, Cooper would swiftly capture her momentum, driving her to second place as a draft movement for Eleanor Butler Roosevelt peeled off dozens more Luce votes.

Ballot 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Lucius D. Clay 512 513 549 601 632 637 656
Clare Boothe Luce 646 641 619 599 529 515 514
John Sampson Cooper 277 282 308 310 366 368 369
Roy Acuff 46 101 112 165 187 188 170
Pappy O'Daniel 351 299 247 143 89 88 87
James A. Rhodes 58 58 58 58 58 58 58
Luis A. Ferre 42 42 43 42 43 44 46
Eleanor B. Roosevelt 1 1 1 19 31 38 38
Henry Skillman Breckinri-dge 21 21 21 21 19 17 15
With 1,310 delegates necessary to win the nomination, another half dozen rounds of balloting would bring no candidate anywhere near the necessary supermajority. Luce delegates would fiercely resist the rise of Lucius D. Clay, with Luce's manager Walter Judd and friend Anna Chennault illicitly spreading pamphlets accusing the General of being a plant of the regime to take control of the opposition. Yet, with his eyes on leading a reformed State Department, Pappy O'Daniel would stand back as his collapsing campaign gave its strength to Lucius D. Clay. Flatlining after several ballots with delegates consternated at the unwillingness of their chieftain to actively rally them, Roy Acuff's support would soon begin to bolt to Cooper and Clay, leaving Cooper to peak on the 11th ballot. However, a core of loyalist Acuff delegates would hold back the Kentuckian's momentum, as Lucius D. Clay covered ever closer to a majority. Yet, Clay would find himself having exhausted every avenue, with Acuff delegates reluctant to switch, and the block of Cooper and Luceites unwilling to come to the table. Further, a movement would begin to circumvent the squabbles of the major candidates and nominate General Curtis LeMay, the young face of the Pacific War. Yet, LeMay's role in the atomic bombings of millions of Japanese civilians would leave Senator Will Rogers Jr. to implore the convention not to proceed with the General as a compromise.

Ballot 8 9 10 11 12 13 14
Lucius D. Clay 659 661 692 712 739 744 744
Clare Boothe Luce 514 513 512 512 513 516 516
John Sampson Cooper 368 392 397 439 438 435 433
Roy Acuff 168 144 141 99 71 61 61
Pappy O'Daniel 83 81 28 8 2 2 3

Henry Skillman Breckinri-dge 10 9 7 6 5 4 2
Curtis LeMay 1 2 12 13 13 13 13
The Convention would lock itself in deadlock as three ballots passed. The night as black as the shirts of the threatening bystanders, it would become clear that, with neither's supporters willing to concede to the other, neither Clay nor Luce would prevail. From Haitian Senator Elie Lescot to Convention Chair S.I. Hayakawa and General Claire Chennault, delegates would attempt to draft a compromise. On friendly terms with Luce and Clay alike, Chennault would nearly prevail, yet his dogged loyalty to the Liberalism of his youth would hold back his chances. The Liberals could veto a candidate, but they could never nominate one. Yet, Chennault would telegraph his wife Anna with a suggestion, a protege of his whose famed dogfights over the Pacific and haughty demeanor had bought him fame. A protege drummed out of his beloved Air Force for opposing the "Bomber Mafia" consensus of Curtis LeMay only to purchase a baseball team. A protege who survived eight airplaine crashes. A protege who had once been an aid to Hugh S. Johnson and who counts Charles Lindbergh among his friends, but who donated to the re-election campaign of "the voice of impeachment," Representative Nixon. A protege married to the heir to the Pulitzer fortune and media empire. A protege by the name of Elwood R. Quesada, but better known to friend and foe alike as "Pete." Bankers Fred Akers and George Garrett, friends of the dashing commander, would throw themselves in pre-organizing on his behalf, hiring demonstrators to spark what seemed an almost spontaneous movement.
Kate Quesada, once the young Kate Pulitzer who had defied high society to marry a hot tempered Major League Baseball player turned fighter pilot, would awake her husband before dawn to inform him that Professor Chennault from his Academy days had entered his name to be nominated for President of the United States, with delegate Milton Eisenhower casting the first vote. In the Convention's recess between the 16th and 17th ballots, Anna would go about printing hundreds of "Can't Beat Pete!" buttons, while working behind the scenes among those such as the Ohio delegation, long loyal to Jim Rhodes, winning second choice. Most importantly, she would win over Richard Nixon among the Luce delegates and Jimmie Davis among the supporters of Clay, portraying Quesada as capturing the party platform while holding the war hero's mystique. Taking things a step further, Chennault would pitch the ex-General as a moderate, a liberal, and a conservative at variance, refusing to let policy distract her from her central argument: the 48-year-old Quesada could win, Clay and Luce had proven they couldn't. The 18th ballot would see the deadlock broken as hundreds of supporters abandoned Luce and Clay alike for Quesada, by the 19th, Clay and Luce themselves would step back from their campaigns. With Luce admiring tales of Quesada's pre-flight rosaries and Clay on friendly terms, both would accept the compromise as supporters of the minor candidates such as Ferre and Rhodes rallied behind him. On the 20th ballot, with other candidates excepting Cooper falling behind Quesada, he would win the nomination, narrowly surpassing the 2/3 requirement before a motion to declare his nomination unanimous on the 21st ballot.

Louisiana Governor and former country musician Jimmie Davis, famous for "You Are My Sunshine," would come in third to S.I. Hayakawa, with California Senator Will Rogers a narrow second. Yet, many would worry that Hayakawa's Japanese ancestry would risk racist attacks so soon after the Third Pacific War, even as Americans reconciled with the now fallen sun across the ocean. Hayakawa's chances would be further weakened with the remark that “I would encourage insurrection in those poor crushed countries that have been under tyranny all these years.” Further, the death of Rogers' father by a fascist bomb and his military service would be contrasted with Davis's lack of either to paint Rogers as more compatible with the theme of a heroic ticket to rescue the nation from fascism. With the eccentric linguist's support set back, Hayakawa would endorse Rogers in the name of party unity, securing the Senator a third ballot victory despite significant support for Jimmie Davis across the South. Thus, at four o'clock in the morning on August 14th of 1952, the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic would adjourn its first national convention.
Senator Will Rogers Jr. of California, Cincinnatus nominee for the Vice Presidency.

A DC native, Pete Quesada would be in the convention hall at ten as it convened anew, meeting kingmakers and strutting through mobs of delegates as the party considered a series of resolutions on names. With a breakaway group led by legal Chairman Frank Chodorov suing the merger faction of the Liberty League, affiliated delegates would vote near unanimously to drop the title in favor of christening themselves anew with the old moniker of Liberal. Further, in an attempt to stress the status of the Preservationist nominee as a military hero, the convention would vote to adopt for its presidential ticket, and presidential ticket only, the partisan line of "Cincinnatus," after the New Order of Cincinnatus operating among oppositionists in Washington state and Alabama, and, of course, the Roman statesman who transformed his swords into plowshares after a brief tenure as leader of his republic in a time of crisis. With every delegate declared a member, the New Order of Cincinnatus would go national as the campaign vehicle of the Quesada and Rogers ticket.
A narrower vote would approve the use of the name "Law Preservation Party" for those candidates running without Progressive or Liberal affiliation.
Further, the party would approve a short platform, rejecting a suggestion from Quesada to enshrine an age limit for holding office while vowing:
  • First and foremost, to recognize no political principle other than the Constitution of the country, the Union of the states, and the enforcement of the law.
    • To bring about a renaissance in politics and to promote a Spartan-like devotion to honesty, cleanliness, efficiency, and economy in government.
    • To clean out graft, corruption, and hypocrisy in our public offices.
    • To modernize state, county, and local government and to eliminate all duplicating phases thereof.
    • To eliminate waste in governmental machinery and to work for a substantial reduction in the tax burden the average taxpayer is forced to bear.

Elwood R. \"Pete\" Quesada in flight gear after a demonstration of his aeronautical prowess to eager delegates.
With the end of procedural matters, Pete Quesada would rise to the stage for the first time, a handful of cheers greeting him. Omar Bradley once wrote that the dashing young Air Force General "could have passed for a prototype of the hot pilot, with his shiny green trousers, broad easy smile, and crumpled yet jaunty hat, but he was a brilliant, hard, and daring air-support commander on the ground," and his youthful smile upheld that characterization today, yet his face would soon turn grave as he began.
I think a military officer, regardless of what service he’s in, is improved if he handles unusual assignments...I look forward to being assigned by the American people to the White House! I believe every person has been put on this Earth for just one purpose—to serve his fellow man. It doesn’t matter how he does this. He can build a bridge, paint a picture, invent a labor-saving gadget, or run a gas station. The point is, he should try to leave the Earth a better place than he found it. If he does, his life will have been worthwhile. If he doesn’t do what he can within his own limitations, he is destined to be unhappy.” Comparing himself to his longtime friend Lindbergh, Quesada would continue with a chuckle, saying that “I'll have something to bounce off Lindy whenever he boasts too much about that little term he served.”
Promising without elaboration to defend “integrity, Americanism, fiscal responsibility, and courage,” Quesada would speak on foreign policy, declaring that the United States had won a war on tyranny, and that “Korea remembers. Indonesia remembers. The Philippines remember..to abandon them is to tell the Free World that they cannot depend on the United States.” Further, he would note that while "“I abhor war," he stands firm in a belief that "we can maintain peace only through strength.
Moving to domestic matters, Quesada would claim that “a government is the servant, not the master,” declaring that “Fascism has been wasted effort...middle class, sincere decent people, need to regain the influence they’ve lost over the past decades," while arguing that “there are too many intellectuals in government who have no experience in management in which the majority’s will is to be followed.” Quesada would accuse the government of being led by “men of limited imagination" and “those who postponed making decisions," promising to “weed out the incapable and inefficient." Then, in a tacit move of comparison between the man the convention styled as a latter day Cincinnatus and the incumbent dynamo who had energized so many Blackshirts, Quesada would declare that "the more I see the more I realize there is a difference between men.
Quesada would turn to the party's past failures and shock many delegates by placing them directly at the feet of the opposition itself, claiming that "an examination of these failures reveals contributory negligence on the part of ourselves, discord and a lack of confidence in our forces.” The convention looked on with bated breath as Pete Quesada, infuriated by the fear among the delegates assembled, raised his voice for the shouted words that have entered immortality as the most famous words of his campaign, screaming from his microphone into millions of American homes and newspaper headlines that:
"Our whole country is stopped by a tinpot dictator that tossed a few dozen of us into jail! Follow the light which leads to truth and we will prevail, history will show we saved the day...
THE ONLY THING WE HAVE TO FEAR IS FEAR ITSELF!"

2024.05.28 07:28 Potential-Mode-5290 TOCD sucks

Hi yall, I used to be pretty frequent in the HOCD sub. Of course my OCD found something new to poke its head into.
Never in my life have I questioned my gender. Have I thought maybe I haven’t been too much of a man, sure. Have I ever wondered at all what I might be like to be female? Oh ya. But I’ve never wanted to abandon my body, and I love being a man and working out, watching sports, saying and doing the absolute dumbest things possible, the typical stupid shit us men do.
Wouldn’t quite say I do anything too feminine, or at least on purpose to say the least. Mostly the occasional sitting weirdly or standing weirdly (granted might be because I’m bisexual anyways). Other than that, I’m pretty uncomfortable around girls (just because I have social anxiety, girls are great). No wearing dresses, no wearing wigs (unless I had to for a play), I’ve never felt comfortable being feminine.
After the neat discovery of finding out I’m bi, something still felt off, and I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, so of course, my OCD decides to pop into my brain “what if it’s because you aren’t actually a guy, but a girl”. WHAM, like a baseball bat to the noggin. For the past three days I have thought and thought about this for whatever reason, fortunately though, even ruminating I cannot find a singular piece of proof I’ve ever wanted to be a woman. Only thing is that I tended to like arts a lot growing up, but that doesn’t really mean shit. But it just seems so convincing in my head, like I can imagine myself now as girls but not guys, and I feel like I can only relate to girls now after being dominantly comfortable around men my entire life.
While I’m extremely positive this is in my head, OCD can make it feel real. Fortunately I’ve learned from HOCD, and I’m not afraid to tell my OCD that it’s not that big of a deal. Hopefully I don’t become too much of a regular on this sub, just felt like I needed to vent as the beginning of the trip is usually the worst for me. Anyways hope yall are well, thanks for letting me vent.

2024.05.28 05:17 DungeonsandDoofuses Struggling with anything other than survival

I’ve been a stay at home mom to my two and three year old for six months now and I just cant seem to get ahead on anything, we’re just surviving. I can get my three year old to and from preschool, I can keep everyone fed and clean, I can get the dishes and laundry done. But despite having roughly two hours a day of child free time while the two year old naps and the three year old is at school, I can’t seem to manage more than that.
I want to get my younger kid into classes but I get bogged down looking and give up. I struggle to make and keep doctor’s appointments. I had big ambitions about daily arts and crafts but I haven’t managed to reorder supplies in three months. I never exercise despite knowing it would help and theoretically having the time. I struggle to maintain any sort of cleaning schedule outside the dishes and laundry necessities and had to hire monthly cleaners to keep us from falling into a pit.
My younger goes down for her nap, I sit down to eat lunch, and then it feels like I blink and my alarm is going off to wake up the baby and go pick up the elder. I just scroll on my phone or read fanfiction or just stare at a wall in screensaver mode, kicking myself to do any of the things on my to do list, anything, just please get up and do anything, and I just can’t.
This is the first chunk of time in my life where I haven’t had school or work dictating exactly what I need to be doing and providing consequences for failure, and without that I am proving to be incapable. I was relatively high functioning, I got decently grades in a difficult degree and had a successful ten year career before I quit to be a SAHM, and now I feel like I’ve melted down into a pit of executive dysfunction, just barely treading water.
It definitely doesn’t help that I’m unmedicated currently, because I missed three appointments with my psychiatrist in six months and got fired as a client, so now I have to start the search all over again and guess where that task lies in the undoable to do list.
It’s insane how productive and accomplished I used to be and how much I’m struggling now. I love being with my kids, I excel at the “mothering” part of this gig, but holy shit the unending parade of executive tasks of running a household is KILLING ME.

2024.05.28 04:09 ScientistSilent2772 BU, UM or FSU for Pre-Med as a Transfer

Hiiii! Im trying to decide which university I’d like to attend this fall. I’ve narrowed it down to UMiami, Boston University, Florida State, and maybe Northeastern but I haven't heard back yet. Which one is the best choice for my major but also for my social life?
I do love going out but id prefer a university that is better for my major than just partying. I also am nervous about attending BU because I heard about grade deflation for the people going into the College of Arts and Sciences.

2024.05.28 02:13 Different_Horse6239 First time in Japan, 15 days report (with pictures)

Before I start, here are the pictures - https://photos.app.goo.gl/M1EGtrVyHhpH8f4A7 ("Japan 2" because I took out group shots and condensed slightly from my private album) I've respected the requests for no photos everywhere I've gone (and it happens a lot) so some things are missing from here - I've included a couple of links to sites with pictures of things I couldn't photograph in my breakdown.
I've been wanting to try a solo trip for a little while and originally planned to do this all myself. In the end I chickened out and booked onto a group tour for some of it, but made sure I had a chunk of time on my own too. In the end I needn't have worried about going alone - all the airport and hotel staff speak perfect English, restaurant/shop staff sometimes less so but it's less important there, all navigation signs are translated to English (at least for the cities I visited), Google maps works great (when taking the metro make sure to check which exit it recommends), Google translate has a feature to use your camera and translate any text it sees which works very well most of the time (the tour company booked and collected my JR pass for me so I can't comment on that, although I'm sure it would've also been fine) - although the group were all lovely and made the trip much more fun!
Food isn't really a priority for me when travelling so I can't tell you where I ate most of the time, often it was just the nearest ramen place with a not terrible score on Google. I did make sure to try all of the local stuff as I went (Kobe/Wagyu beef, curry, yakitori, kushikatsu, ramen, donburi, sushi, takoyaki, taiyaki, yakisoba, okonomiyaki, tonkatsu, shabu shabu, tempura, gyoza, souffle pancakes, dango).
Flight - opted to go direct as I've never done a transfer before, but could've saved a little bit of cash by stopping over in China for a few hours. The flight was at 9am (London Heathrow, British Airways, economy), 14 hours long and landed at 7am Japanese time (Haneda), so I decided to stay up through the night to make sure I definitely manage to fall asleep on the plane, which I of course did not.
Saturday 13th April - Tokyo Landed at 7am local time. From what I've read my experience is not the norm and you should plan to be there a while, but from the plane touching down, me getting through customs/passport control, exchanging some currency, buying a SIM and travel card through to stepping on the train... a little under an hour? Wont go into it too much but make sure you get a SIM and travel card at the airport, it'll be a lot harder in the city. I got the "Welcome Suica" which is designed for tourists, there's no fee to purchase the card but you can't refund whatever's left at the end - HOWEVER there's a Seven-Eleven (corner shop type thing, they're everywhere in Japan) at the airport (both before and after security) where you can pay with funds from your IC card, so you can make sure you don't waste much (I had about 8 yen left on mine). Went to the hotel (one of the APA hotels in Shinjuku), too early to check in but dropped my bag off. First stop was the Ichiyo Sakura festival - a lot smaller than it is billed as online, I think it's been scaled back a lot post-pandemic, there's no longer a parade, just a little stage in a park with a few hundred attendees and a variety of performances of Japanese stuff - still quite cool, but I was sleep deprived and needed to keep moving so didn't stay too long. I wanted to hunt for cherry blossoms as I knew it was almost the end of the season and they'd die off very quickly, and I'd also seen Tokyo Skytree in the distance, so those were my priorities, and I eventually found myself in Sumida Park. The pink blossoms were very wilted, but the white ones come out a bit later and were in full bloom. Had my first vending machine experience en-route (may sound like a dumb tourist for recommending a western brand but the grape fanta is amazing and I wish they would release it everywhere). Then it was time to check in to the hotel, intended to just have a nap but slept through til 5am.
Sunday 14th April - Tokyo Started at the Samurai Ninja museum. This is 100% tourist nonsense but well worth doing in my opinion, starts with a chance to dress up in samurai outfits (the website says something about the outfits not "looking good" on people over 5'9 but I'm 6'1 and I think it's fine, would be more concerned about width than height) and take photos, then the guided tour (mandatory, included in the price, in English) which I thought was quite interesting (although I got all the same information again on the walking tours I did so not essential), then a chance to throw rubber shuriken (throwing stars) into a foam wall. Afterwards had a bit of free time so wandered in no particular direction, found my first temple - this was the only one I ended up doing that isn't on all the tourist lists so while it wasn't as spectacular as any of the others I did it was the only one that was actually quiet, so really glad I experienced it. Found my way to Senso-ji temple, but knew I was coming back here with the group so didn't linger. Had some candied fruit on a stick on the way. In the afternoon I'd booked teamLab Borderless - you have to book this in advance and I'd highly recommend. I think it's the sort of place you know whether you'll enjoy it just from the pictures. You may have read that it's busy and full of screaming kids, which was true of the big room in the middle but it's easy to immerse yourself in the side rooms which have much better stuff in anyway. There's another teamLab in Tokyo which is similar and I'm sure is also good, but I didn't feel the need to do both. After, had dinner with someone from the group who also arrived early and then wandered around Shibuya for a bit - looked around a pachinko parlour but didn't partake as they were closing in 30 minutes.
Monday 15th April - Tokyo There was a sumo exhibition fight at Yasukini shrine that I spent almost the whole day at! This is a free annual event. Afterwards, had a little walk round near the Imperial Palace (sadly the main gardens are closed on Mondays) then went to grab my suitcase and meet the tour group.
Tuesday 16th April - Kamakura Day trip to Kamakura. Started at Engaku-ji temple where I bought my Goshuincho (at most temples/shrines you can pay a small fee for someone to hand-write a prayer in calligraphy which is unique to that location called a Goshuin, and they'll only do it in a specific type of book called a Goshuincho - it's the last photo in my album). I found it very strange that they were building another building on the site, you'd never be allowed to mess with a historical site like that in England. Then the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine. Struggling to come up with much to say about it but it was very pretty? And afterwards the great Buddha statue. We tried to watch the sunset on the beach but it was too cloudy, then headed back to Tokyo.
Wednesday 17th April - Kyoto Bullet train to Kyoto, dropped bags at hotel. Hired kimonos and wandered around the Gion district taking photos for a few hours, before we had booked a matcha tea ceremony (we were told not to worry about cultural appropriation, Japanese people think it's funny seeing western people dressed in them, which did seem to be the case). After lunch we saw the Miyako Odori (each of the geisha districts in Kyoto performs a show/dance for the public once a year, this is the Gion show and is only on in April) - I obviously couldn't take pictures, but there's a snippet up here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jm--yxNLMFU
Thursday 18th April - Kyoto Began at the Fushini Inari shrine (the one with thousands of torii gates). You can hike up to the top and back down in under an hour, but there's lots of little side paths to wander down - we budgeted for 3 hours and still didn't see everything. There's a free audio guide online in multiple languages which is quite good. Quickly visited Sanjusangen-do temple (the one with 1001 statues of the deity Kannon) afterwards which I would highly recommend, my favourite of all the temples I saw. Couldn't take photos of the inside, but here it is - https://www.discoverkyoto.com/places-go/sanjusangen-do/#features . In the afternoon we did a free walking tour (Kyoto Localised - obviously tips are expected, please do). I thought the guide was very good and made it entertaining as well as informative, a lot of the time tour guides can be very dry. In the evening, a sushi making class, and then rushed to Kodai-ji temple to see the illuminations before they closed.
Friday 19th April - Kyoto (Arashiyama) Got up early to get to the bamboo forest before it got too crowded. Have no idea why it's so famous - I saw several bamboo forests on the trip (including at Fushini Inari), it's not particularly big and you can only go on the paths - but there is at least some other stuff in the area worth seeing. Hiked up to the top of the hill, then down to the river to sit with our feet in for a while. Had a really strange encounter with some schoolgirls who wanted a picture with us, then went to Tenryu-ji temple. We took the scenic railway (romancecar) back to Kyoto - this is great, try to sit on the right hand side if you can. Rushed up the hill to catch the sunset from Kiyomizu temple. There's a swanky hotel nearby with a rooftop bar that has a gorgeous view of Kyoto (expensive, don't eat here, not sure if it's meant for hotel guests only but nobody asked for a room number or tried to stop us).
Saturday 20th April - Hiroshima Bullet train to Hiroshima, then the ferry over to Miyajima island (ferry is kinda included in the JR pass but you have to pay a small amount of tax) for the floating torii gate. The island is nice to walk around and has lots of deer, we didn't bother with the cable car though as it was quite foggy. Took the ferry back across, then went to see the nuclear bomb dome and peace museum. The museum is quite small and most people would know the history of it but I found the artwork done by survivors to be particularly striking, as well as the eyewitness accounts. Had okonomiyaki in the evening - they uniquely make them with noodles in Hiroshima, great if you're a carb lover like me.
Sunday 21st April - Himeji/Osaka Stopped off at Himeji on the way back to Osaka. Himeji Castle is one of the few surviving castles in Japan (there are many that have been demolished and then replicas built). It is rather impressive in person, although there is nothing to see inside - audio guide is a must as there are no information signs either. Back in Osaka we had a guided food tour - kushikatsu (deep fried skewers), takoyaki (octopus balls), an izakaya (barestaurant that does a bit of everything) and finished with taiyaki (fish shaped pastry filled with red bean paste). The tour ended by dotonbori bridge where we then took a short river cruise up and down the street.
Monday 22nd April - Nara/Osaka Day trip to Nara! Starting in Nara Park, with all the deer that bow to you. Onto Kasuga-Taisha shrine, the one with loads of bronze lanterns. Probably one of the nicer shrines I saw, depending on how far along you are in your trip if you've seen enough it's skippable, much more important you visit Todai-ji temple, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world which houses a huge bronze Buddha statue. There is a hole the same size as the statue's nostril towards the back of the building which you can try to crawl through and is said to bring good fortune. Walk around Naramachi before heading back to Osaka.
Tuesday 23rd April - Tokyo Visited Senso-ji properly in the morning. Most of the day was spent on a walking tour (Tokyo Localised) from Akihabara to Ueno Park - this one wasn't as good as the one in Kyoto, a lot of it was spent sitting and listening rather than walking and the guy was quite pushy with tips. Had a bit of time to mooch around and get some shopping done, I picked up some matcha tea that my Aunt had asked for and some funky Kit-Kat flavours to bring back to housemates/colleagues/friends (liked all the fruity ones I tried except apple which was really bitter - best one was melon). We had dinner at a shabu shabu restaurant (Momo Paradise) and then spent the night in Shinjuku/Golden Gai.
Wednesday 24th April - Tokyo Began the day with a maid cafe experience - this is creepy af and should be avoided at all costs. Went to Harajuku, didn't actually see anybody dressed up but enjoyed the rainbow cheese toastie and giant candy floss all the same. Flying visit to Shibuya to cross the crossing (if you do go, maybe try one of the upper floor people watching cafes/restaurants that always get suggested for this area, it didn't feel worth it to go just to cross, it felt like a normal street crossing), then up Tokyo Tower to the viewing platform - this was nice, but we chose a day with really poor visibility.
Thursday 25th April - Tokyo Travel with the group ended here, a few with later flights came with me to Odaiba beach in the morning. This place is beautiful if it's clear and sunny, I think the tide was in but there were a few rocks we could climb on. Saw the Statue of Liberty and the robot statue. Then I had to head back to the city as I had a ticket for a baseball game (Tokyo Swallows v Hiroshima Carp). This was loads of fun - I work in sports data so had a rough idea of the rules but would suggest others having a quick read beforehand if you go. I caught a really good game, 9-8 to the home team with a home run in the final inning (and with 2 men already out) to win it, also saw a 'grand slam' (home run with a man already on each base for 4 runs). They bring umbrellas to the game and wave them up and down when they score!
Friday 26th April - Hakone This was my favourite day of the trip! I bought the Hakone freepass, which gets you free travel to, from and all around Hakone, plus a couple of discounts. You display the ticket on your phone so it's very easy to use. I've heard Hakone can get busy, and I'm sure it was much worse at the weekend, but I had no queues whatsoever! Started at Shinjuku station, usually the advice is to pay for an upgrade to take the romancecar, rather than sit on the Odakyu line for hours with a transfer at Odawara, but I was lucky that there was a super express train due when I got to the station that was almost as quick as the romancecar (quicker when factoring in the queue to buy the upgrade - I did take the upgrade on the way back though). I went straight to the open air museum which was absolutely stunning, I could've spent the whole day here. I also thought the Picasso exhibit was very good - I've seen more than enough of his paintings before, but this focused more on his sketches and ceramics work. I completed the rest of the loop, cable car up to the top to see the sulphur vents and the view of Mt Fuji, had an egg cooked in the sulphur, car down the other side to the lake, cruise over the lake (I actually got one of the last boats, keep an eye on departure times). Was too late to visit the shrine but could still go up to the torii by the lake, then bus back to the station to get to Tokyo. In the evening I went to a small local band showcase at a venue called Nine Spices.
Saturday 27th April - Tokyo My last day in Japan was left without a plan, so I could go back and finish off whatever I felt I'd missed. Started with a walk through Yoyogi Park to see Meiji Jingu shrine, then went on towards the Imperial Palace to see the gardens. Had a really nice curry at a restaurant called Sama in Harajuku - not sure it's particularly Japanese but it was very popular, I'd skipped breakfast so had a really early lunch and got straight in but the queue was out the door, down the stairs and along the street when I left. I really wanted to see some Japanese artwork (more so traditional stuff than anything modern) and had a hard time deciding which art gallery was best for this, eventually settling on Tokyo National Museum rather than a gallery, and I think I made the right choice. The main exhibition is mostly about the history of Japanese art, from during the isolation period where the focus was mainly on producing art as useful items - folding screen doors, tables, chairs, sword handles, samurai armour - through to the end of that period and the start of international trade, where the West rejected the idea of these items being classed as "fine art" and so lead to the development of the wood block (ukiyo-e) art style. The museum is laid out in a way that tells the story chronologically and is really interesting. The gift shop at the end is also the best place to get good quality souvenirs - I got some folding screen style prints (smaller, the right size to go on a shelf) and a paper fan (sensu). There's a few other buildings on the museum grounds with smaller exhibitions - I didn't see all of them as it was getting late, but I wasn't overly enthusiastic about what I did see, it's all about the main building in my opinion. I finished the day at the Pit Inn (jazz club, the band I saw was called the Suga Dairo Trio).
Sunday 28th April - checked out of hotel, went to airport, 1pm flight.
I'm very happy with my itinerary but there were a few places I didn't get to see. I didn't get to see much of Osaka, I also wish I'd tried harder to get Ghibli museum tickets. I'm not sure that I'd cut anything but with another few days I'd have built in an overnight stay in Kanazawa and a day trip or overnight stay in Nikko (or I might've considered a few nights in Seoul as I'm unlikely to be back in this part of the world anytime soon).

2024.05.27 20:36 Unique-Complaint-292 (Update) My husband got his AP pregnant

I had posted this a while ago, but it seems to have been deleted or people can’t see it.
I don’t really want to give much information about how the divorce really went, but let’s just say a lot of it went to my favor. Their baby was born and everything went smoothly.
I wanted to mainly focus on how cheaters don’t ever seem to realize on how their cheating will impact their children. My husband is now dealing with the consequences with the children and he’s finally getting the wake up call that he has messed up badly.
My children all have been going through therapy, but for some of my children we are still in the process of finding the right therapist for them.
It was agreed between us that we wouldn’t force the children to sleepover if they didn’t want to. Although, I fought about my oldest Matthew’s decision on wanting no contact at the moment. My husband fought it and sadly had things go in his favor.
I’m more than sure that Matthew is going to end up cutting contact or having minimum interactions with him as he gets older. Matthew has been more open about his feelings and been more vulnerable around me. My husband keeps trying to force interactions between them both and it’s stopping Matthew from accepting things. Matthew no longer wants to take part in a lot of the extracurricular activities he was doing. He’s shown interest in some new ones and my ex isn’t really as happy to hear that he quit baseball.
Giselle (Affair Partner) of course making this about her complains to my husband about Matthew’s behavior towards her and she’s apparently cried about it. Matthew also wants nothing to do with their child and refuses to keep an eye on the baby if Giselle needs to go to the bathroom or she wants to shower.
My daughter Alexa and Matthew relationship has been broken and this is where my ex-husband has physically acknowledged on how badly he’s messed up. Matthew has bare minimum interactions with Alexa. I’ve seen Alexa tried to purposely pick fights, but Matthew won’t fight her. He just lets her win and finds something else to do. She tries to also start interactions, but Matthew will ignore her or he’ll give vague answers. Matthew had found out that Alexa was aware of the affair and was helping my ex cheat. My ex-husband has tried to intervene, but he’s making things worse.
As for my daughter, shit hit the fan because they had found out that she was aware of the affair and had been helping meet up with AP. She’s getting a lot of backlash over this. This is what I’m currently working with my daughter on because she’s had a ton of relatives and friends turn their back on her. I’m trying my hardest on helping her deal with this situation. She originally decided to go live with them, but she’s been asking if she can stay over longer and more often. She’s slowly coming back around and we are making progress with our relationship.
My youngest son Milan is seeing how Matthew has taken the divorce and asks a lot of questions. He’s not aware of the details about the affair. Especially, towards Matthew’s feelings because he wants to comfort him, but Matthew doesn’t let him. He has been going to therapy too, but he’s the one I’m struggling with the most because my poor baby is so confused with what’s going on. He doesn’t understand why everyone is being so cold and mean towards him. He’s been having a lot of panic attacks. He used to stay over with my husband, but has slowly started to withdrawal. He’ll stay for a day or two and then asks to come back home.
Matthew said that Milan had accidentally hit the baby and Giselle went crazy on him. She went and then exaggerated that Milan purposely did it to my ex-husband. Milan then was no longer allowed to be around the baby. (Apparently, Giselle had spilled something on the floor and Milan not paying attention didn’t see the spill and he ended up tripping and hitting the baby with the Nintendo switch he had in his hand. The baby was apparently laying on the ground.)
I’ve already had enough of her. Let me tell you what the audacity she also had…My children get allowances and Milan wanted to buy the baby a present with his money. She didn’t accept the gift. My son arrived home and as soon as my husband left. He broke down into tears and he told me she didn’t accept the gift. He opened up his backpack and took it out. I later learned that she didn’t accept it because she was convinced that this gift was being given with malicious intent and she didn’t want to bring or welcome any bad energy.
As for me, I’ve picked up on everything I was doing and put a pause on when it came towards me. After I had my kids, I slowly let myself lose any self identity. I got a new job and it pays very good. It pays me well enough where I can invest in myself. The benefits are also very good. I literally feel like I hit the jackpot and realized how much I let my marriage take away from me.
I started exercising again and have gotten back in shape. I’ve gotten back to investing into my wardrobe and self care.
My children have gotten the chance to learn more about me. We hang out together more and I’ve also invested in a bigger bed. So, that we can all fit in and they can sleep with me.
My children have learned that I can draw and have been exposed to my previous work of art. When I went back home, I pulled out a box that had a lot of my personal stuff. The art I had it is a bit gory, but they are very intrigued by it. Especially, when they ask about the lore behind some of the drawings.
I also pulled out some of our homemade movies. On Fridays, all my children come in and we watch them together at night. My daughter has gone from watching from the door, to sitting on the floor, and is now comfortable enough to lay on the end of the bed. It’s very nice to hear my children laugh and fight. Especially, since it’s been awhile since I heard them fight over stupid things.
Tbh. Seeing my ex-husband on the tv hurt a bit because of all the chaos. I just couldn’t enjoy the movies like I wanted to, but my children were in the movies and that’s what I focused on. I will mainly put on family home movies and skip over the ones I took of our marriage milestones.

2024.05.27 17:02 Dot200 [The Last Prince of Rennaya] Chapter 60: The End of a World

Previous First Chapter Patreon Royal Road Next
The echoes of swords colliding, rippled across the field, along with the random spurts and cracks, from fissures popping up, as a result of tectonic plates, slowing down and crashing into one another. The planet's destruction was in progress, but nothing could shake the General's focus, as he tried to get the upper hand against the Dark King.
"Terra Arts, Revolving Dome!" He yelled as quakes reverberated throughout their vicinity, then large walls rose and encircled them, before covering the sky in a complete dome of magma. Twice the size of a baseball field.
It began swirling in a circle, with the viscosity of lava flowing down a volcano. Even under the relentless tremors of earthquakes around the planet, the dome still maintained itself, with tremendous heat and pressure.
Rael looked all around him. Noticing he had blocked all of his exits with the support of the planet's iko. It wouldn't be easy for him to escape. "Making your own coffin old man?" He still managed to mock as he gathered energy and desperately searched for a way out.
However, Roku ignored him and continued his task, preparing his stage. "Forbidden Art, Wrath of the Terracotta." Rael watched as blood trailed out of the General's mouth, along with an unbothered smile. "No, this casket, was built with you in mind."
He began backing away, as Rael glanced around and noticed thousands of Azurian soldiers, made out of magma, rising out of the walls, ceiling, and ground. Each of them roared war cries, echoing in an explosive rhythm, and then without hesitation, they all charged the king at full speed.
He cut down as many as he could but was completely outnumbered in moments. Some pounding down on him and the remaining exploding on touch.
Roku continued his assault and raised his hand, high above his head. The walls seemingly started to pulse as if they were alive, pumping more lava out of the ground and running it through its veins to the center of the ceiling. Which morphed into a sky cannon, seconds from erupting.
Blood dripped down, his nose, yet he fought on, yelling at the top of his lungs. "Forbidden Art, Terra Liberation!"
A laser beam of burning lava burst out of the cannon, absolutely destroying the entire domain, yet the walls still held up and contained the blast. With the disappearance of the king's iko below, Roku finally felt a bit of relief knowing there was no way he could move with the terracotta holding him down.
He let up, as the dome walls began to fall apart. He felt his chest, feeling many organs, beginning to fail. Tears, forced him to look up at the ash-coloured sky, remembering Two and his family.
However, Rael's voice shook him back to reality. "Unfortunately that wasn't enough."
As the smoke cleared, The General was shocked to see the king, still standing amongst frozen and broken Terracotta soldiers. Each climbing over each other and trying to reach him. The ground he was standing on, was carved out of its surroundings and pressed far below ground level.
The biggest shock to him though, was Rael's appearance. "A Lost One..." He murmured to himself, as he coughed more blood.
Rael took a deep breath, simmering in all of the dark energy, smothering him. "Not many people have driven me this far... Congrats, now I'm mad."
Dark energy reinforced the elemental phenomenon revolving around the king, as he crouched down, with one hand on his sheathed sword. The skull on his face, painted for war in blood, began to crack. "Hod Erebos!"
Black lightning ripped through the remnants of the ceiling, and raced toward him, then surged into his sword. A thin film of ice condensed air pressure, all over his sword, concentrating an all-black coat of lava, as he quickly unsheathed it and leaped with frightening speed, off the pillar holding him up from the abyss.
Roku braced himself, preparing his defence, however in the split second that he blinked, Rael had teleported, less than a meter in front of him and beheaded him. All before he could react, as he passed by gracefully.
The General watched his world tilt upside down, as Rael sheathed his sword back and allowed his skull to break off completely. "Forgive me, Ak-"
Rael obliterated the remains of his body before they could hit the ground. Staying true to his name. "I'm honoured for the fight, but I disliked how much, you put me through. You may live on in my memory."
His side effects began to creep up on him, making it hard for him to breathe and remain standing. Regardless, he would have to find the strength. He cursed as he turned around, seeing Calypso, floating right behind him, with her streaking, streaks of silver and a flaming white-hot sphere of fire, floating in front of her palm.
"Did you miss me?" She asked as she launched her gift, with deadly speed.
Akio vs Atlas and Mado...
"So, you've chosen to lose yourself?" the Elder asked, watching the king's disturbing transformation. He shook his head in disgust. "Savages till the end." He concluded, before launching the sphere at them. "Terra Art, Celestial Descent."
The sphere began to descend at a rapid pace. Atlas glanced at Mado, hoping he might still have his wits about him, as a bead of sweat rolled down his cheek.
Quickly, he thrust his hands in front of him, producing a condensed sphere of lava, then erupted it, trying to push back Akio's attack. However, instead, he noticed his feet, digging into the dirt. Panic struck his mind, as his life started to flash before his eyes.
Suddenly a beam of black fire and lightning, crashed into the sphere, stopping its acceleration. The emperor looked over to the king, seeing him still in his lost form, but choosing survival over death. Relieved, he turned back and yelled, following Mado's roar.
The two pushed back with all of their might, resulting in the collision of forces in a draw, with a magnificent explosion. Magma rained everywhere, as tension built up between the two parties.
"My, my, I didn't think you had that much fight, left in you." The Elder broke the silence while stroking his beard, his eyes went wide, as he turned around to block the king, teleporting in with a sneak attack. With ease, he blocked a few more, then punched him back down into the ground.
Atlas was next, using the distraction to crash into him as they both locked hands and spiralled downwards. Akio used the momentum to break one of his hands free and slammed the emperor into the ground, then threw him, while kicking a few boulders toward his direction, to keep him down.
"You're making this too easy." He said, covering his hands in magma, just as Mado appeared once more at the worst possible time. The Elder's fist connected with the skull covering his face and cracked it up.
The king recoiled back a few meters, slightly withstanding the strike, as dark smoke, began to escape the mask. He roared back in pain.
'He's getting stronger.' Akio thought to himself. Then stepped hard, while he hammering his fist down in the air, simultaneously sinking Mado, deep into the planet. Leaving him to be attacked constantly, by the wrath of the planet.
He winced as Atlas appeared behind him, trying to jam a ball of green fire into his back. However, the Elder had already anticipated him and sidestepped. Allowing him to pass by, with a parting gift in the form of his own ball of condensed lava, lodged into his gut.
Akio smiled, seeing the emperor refuse to give up, as he rose out of the smoke and debris, hundreds of meters away with his strength still rising, as anger and desperation took over. At the same time, he felt tremors from down below, from the king, making his way back up into the sky.
The Elder watched him erupt out and land, panting and nearly out of breath. He noticed the left half of his skull still remained, with his clothes in tatters. Showcasing battle scars woven throughout his life, brandished all over his body.
However Akio's grin got wider seeing the look on his face. Regardless, he braced himself, as his opponents yelled war cries, charging at him. "It's almost time. Just a bit more-"
Black lightning cut him off, almost too quick for him to react as Atlas fired barrages of fire, at his location. He jumped back, as the smoke from the explosions, blocked his vision. Mado teleported in first, punching him, in the face, just as he landed. The Elder was stunned but didn't move more than a few centimetres, smiling. "Not bad."
With quick reflexes, he slapped the king's fist to the side and socked him back into the distance. The emperor was next, however, his move was read with ease, as with his next few follow-ups, until he threw a roundhouse kick and managed to break Akio's arm, while he was trying to defend himself.
He let out a wince of pain by mistake, which the emperor quickly noticed. The strain of holding Rennaya's strength and the damage he was taking, were starting to take a toll on his body.
Atlas took the opportunity, lunging at him for the kill. However, a golem grabbed him from behind and suplexed him, with incredible force, while the elder followed up by blasting the both of them away with a quick beam of lava.
He started to heave, it was getting harder for him to breathe. His body was beginning to give up and ask him to go to sleep. He shook his head, refusing to give up, as Mado appeared once more and was immediately sent back, as Atlas followed up.
However, they kept coming back, over and over, making progress little by little on an immovable mountain, as the Elder, held on, coughing blood, and taking in more damage.
Then he snapped. Tired of their onslaught.
The next time the king appeared before him, he was greeted with a sphere of lava in his belly, detonating at point-blank range. Which sent him flying uncontrollably, however, Akio managed to catch up to him. Striking him, each time he was about to descend.
"You, who was born in darkness, don't you realize that you are being tested the most?" He yelled at him.
Mado raged, trying to recover himself. He had almost regained back all of his sanity, but his anger kept clouding his vision.
Just as he thought, he had freed himself from Akio's combo, he was caught, with another strike to his back, as Akio reappeared with a blur, sending him back down to the ground. The Eder then followed up by landing with his entire might placed in his fist, knocking the king out temporarily.
He jumped back looking for the emperor and smirked as he appeared just where he wanted him to be. He caught him by the neck, as Atlas struggled to free himself. "You will never rule in peace. You were never chosen. Accept your fate, you abhorrent imitation."
His eyes went wide, as he watched the Elder pull back his other hand, while making fist, superheating to an intense heat, with a glove of lava. He yelled out as he struck him with ferocity. "Forbidden Art, Warriors Fist."
The impact was bone-shattering, erasing the entire landscape, behind the emperor and depleting a major part of his lifespan's reserves. Every part of his body broke without fail, as he crashed, into a crumbling mountain.
Akio looked down, seeing his body begin to crack and break apart. "I guess it's time, now. Rennaya is ready. I am ready." He spoke to himself, as Atlas appeared in the sky, in his basic form, but heavily injured. He noticed Mado, slowly getting up, but completely out of energy and the skull broken to pieces in his crash site.
As the emperor's voice fazed in and out for him, he smirked, but was able to make out what he was saying. "Think about this! You'll be putting your people in danger! Your grandchild too! What will you gain from this senseless sacrifice!"
A tear escaped his eye, but he shook his head, smiling with relief. "Ahh Atlas. My people will be fine, besides, your frustration is more than enough."
He clasped his hands together in prayer formation. Sending the last of his energy into Rennaya's core.
Atlas, gave up, seeing as it was too late, and started to flee, jetting away towards the sky. Mado noticed his takeoff, then glanced at Akio, who just smiled at him.
"None of you will be leaving here," the Elder stated, as he took a deep breath. "Forbidden Art, Underworld Rising."
The king looked to the sky and immediately took off, choosing to fight another day. However, below him, hundreds of fissures, broke open, flooding the land with a sea of lava. Then hundreds of thousands of hands rose out of the burning sea and grabbed hold of his left leg and Atlas's right before he could teleport.
Dragging them both back down. They spun around and looked back at him, as he gave them, one last innocent smile. "Forbidden Art, Planetary Detonation!" He yelled as Rennaya's core imploded.
Notes:
As I mentioned before, there is one last chapter before the end of volume 1, then volume 2 will begin in one month(to extend my backlog). You can still read the unedited parts I've posted on Royal Road. Two days after the next chapter I will post a spoiler-free version of the Rennayan timeline up to current events.
I set up a Patreon although it still needs tweaking, I've reposted the entire story on there (volume 1 is free to read as it is everywhere else) but will be editing volume 2 as well as posting early chapters there ahead of Royal Road. Spoiler and Spoiler-free(Free) timelines are already available on there.
Thanks for reading so far and if you have any feedback or comments, feel free to share them!

His side effects began to creep up on him, making it hard for him to breathe and remain standing. Regardless, he would have to find the strength. He cursed as he turned around, seeing Calypso, floating right behind him, with her hair streaking, streaks of silver and a flaming white-hot sphere of fire, floating in front of her palm.
Then stepped hard, while hammering his right fist down in the air, simultaneously sinking Mado, deep into the planet.
Akio smiled, seeing the emperor refuse to give up, while rising out of the smoke and debris, hundreds of meters away with his strength still rising, as anger and desperation took over.
Just as he thought, he had freed himself from the Elder’s combo, he was caught, with another strike to his back, as Akio reappeared with a blur, sending him back down to the ground. Then followed up by landing with his entire might placed in his fist, knocking the king out temporarily.
Scorching the very ground they were standing on. He yelled out as he struck him with all of his ferocity.
I am ready." He spoke to himself, as Atlas appeared in the sky, with his transformation off, but heavily injured. He noticed Mado, slowly getting up, but completely out of energy and the skull broken to pieces in his crash site.
As the emperor's voice fazed in and out for him, he smirked but was able to make out what he was saying.
"Terra Art, Underworld Rising."
The king looked to the sky and immediately took off, choosing to fight another day. However, below him, hundreds of fissures, broke open, flooding the land with a sea of lava. Then hundreds of thousands of hands rose out of the burning sea and grabbed hold of his left leg and Atlas's right before they could teleport.
Dragging them both back down as they spun around and looked back at him. He gave them, one last innocent smile. "Forbidden Art, Planetary Detonation!" He yelled as Rennaya's core imploded.

2024.05.27 16:00 sonofabutch No game today, so let's remember a forgotten Yankee: Dave Eiland

"I worked really hard to be mediocre. But I studied. When I lay my head on my pillow, I’m very satisfied, not so much with my record or my numbers, but I know I gave it everything I had every day." -- Dave Eiland
Who is the only player in major league history to give up a home run to the first batter he faced, and to hit a home run against the first pitcher he faced? It's not Babe Ruth, it's not Shohei Ohtani, it's not even Roy Hobbs. It's Dave Eiland!
David William Eiland was born July 5, 1966, in Dade City, Florida. He was an all-conference football and baseball at Zephyrhills High School and then attended the University of Florida on a scholarship to play baseball and football, but an injury his freshman year ended his NFL dreams and he focused on baseball. He then transferred to the University of South Florida, where he was an All-Sun Belt Conference player and a preseason All-American in 1987. He also played for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League.
The Yankees drafted Eiland in the 7th round, #185 overall, of the 1987 draft. He rose quickly through the Yankee system, jumping from Low-A to A-ball in his debut season of 1987; he went a combined 9-3 with a 1.87 ERA and 0.960 WHIP in 91.2 innings.
The following year he started in Double-A, where he was an Eastern League All-Star after going 9-5 with a 2.56 ERA and 0.980 WHIP in 119.1 innings, and was promoted to Triple-A Columbus, where he made just one start before getting the call: The soon-to-be 37-year-old Ron Guidry pulled his hamstring and was going on the Disabled List. Eiland was called up to take his place in the rotation.
Eiland's debut on August 3, 1988, was against the Brewers in Milwaukee, and the first batter he faced was future Hall of Famer Paul Molitor. The third baseman welcomed the 22-year-old rookie to the Show by cranking a 1-2 slider to deep left-center for a home run.
"It was the first batter. It only counts for one run." -- Dave Eiland
Eiland settled down after that, allowing just two more hits and two walks in seven innings. But then Eiland's leg started cramping up -- in the sixth, manager Lou Piniella and trainer Gene Monahan went to the mound to check on him -- and he was pulled after the seventh inning. Closer Dave Righetti came in to get the final six outs in a game the Yankees were winning 5-1, and he was bombed for five runs on five hits while retiring just one batter, and the Yankees lost, 6-5.
Eiland made two more starts that year, but he lasted a total of just 5.2 innings while surrendering eight runs on 12 hits, two walks, and two hit batters. The big problem, as demonstrated by the very first batter he faced in the majors, was the long ball -- Eiland gave up five in those 5.2 innings!
The Yankees sent Eiland back down to Columbus after his start on August 17, and he spent the rest of the season down there. The following year he started in Triple-A again. The Yankees called him up in June and again he looked pretty good in his first start, holding the Texas Rangers to three runs over seven innings and getting his first major league win. But over the rest of the season he went 0-3 in five starts, with a 6.26 ERA and 1.683 WHIP in 27.1 innings (and giving up five home runs). Once again he rode the "Columbus Shuttle" and he spent the rest of the season in the minors, and began the 1990 season down there as well.
Eiland -- still just 23 years old -- dominated in Columbus that season, going 16-5 with a 2.87 ERA and 1.067 WHIP. He was named the International League Pitcher of the Year, and the Yankees made him a September call-up. He finally looked good enough in pinstripes -- 2-1, 3.56 ERA, 1.187 WHIP in 30.1 innings -- that he looked like he'd stick the next season.
He opened 1991 in the rotation, joining previously forgotten Yankee Tim Leary, Scott Sanderson, Chuck Cary, and Andy Hawkins... yikes. It was not a fun time to be a Yankee fan.
Eiland went 1-3 with a 4.75 ERA in nine starts before hurting his heel in May and going on the Disabled List. He came back in August, got two more starts -- giving up 11 runs in 8.2 innings -- and was put in the bullpen. (Eiland later said he came back before he'd fully recovered because he wanted to help the team.) He was given two starts at the end of the year, and looked pretty good -- in 12.0 innings, he gave up just three runs on nine hits and a walk.
But that winter, the Yankees made a series of roster moves, signing free agents Danny Tartabull and previously forgotten Yankees Mike Gallego and Mike Stanley; trading Steve Sax to the White Sox for Melido Perez, previously forgotten Yankee Bob Wickman, and Domingo Jean; and acquiring Charlie Hayes from the Phillies for Darrin Chapin. They needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Eiland was designated for assignment, and he didn't like it.
"As far as I'm concerned, it was a stupid move on the part of the Yankees and I'm looking forward to leaving. I've done a lot more for them than some of the people they have kept. I guess I didn't fit into their plans. It doesn't make sense." -- Dave Eiland
He was promptly signed by the Padres, who put him at the end of their rotation for the upcoming 1992 season.
Eiland started the fifth game of the year against the Los Angeles Dodgers in San Diego. He allowed an RBI double to future Yankee Darryl Strawberry in the 1st inning, but future Yankee Gary Sheffield tied it up with an RBI triple in the bottom of the 1st. Eiland retired the side in order in the top of the 2nd.
In the bottom of the 2nd, a walk followed by two outs brought up Eiland with a man on second base. He was facing yet another future Yankee, Bob Ojeda, and drilled a 2-2 pitch to left-center for a two-run home run!
As Eiland had been in the American League his first four seasons -- no interleague play then -- he'd never come up as a batter before. And so he became the first player to allow a home run to the first batter he faced, and to hit a home run against the first pitcher he faced. It would be the only home run of his career.
"It was a fluke. I wish people would talk about my pitching instead of my hitting." -- Dave Eiland
Eiland pitched two seasons in San Diego, going 0-5 with a 5.38 ERA in 16 starts and one relief appearance. They released him the following May, and he signed with the Cleveland Indians. They sent him to Triple-A, where he made eight starts with the Charlotte Knights (1-3, 5.30 ERA) before being traded to the Texas Rangers, who kept him in Triple-A for the rest of the season (3-1, 4.54 ERA). A free agent after the season, he signed with the Yankees during spring training in 1994 and spent the next two seasons back in Columbus, going 9-6 with a 3.58 ERA in 1994 and 8-7 with a 3.14 ERA in 1995. The Yankees called him up on July 21 and he made one start and three relief appearances, going 1-1 with a 6.30 ERA in 10.0 innings.
He signed a minor league deal with the Cardinals for the 1996 season and pitched in eight games, going 0-1 with a 5.55 ERA in 24.1 innings, before getting released in June. Three days later he returned to the Yankees for a third stint, going 8-4 with a 2.92 ERA in Columbus in 15 starts. He was a September call-up for that magical 1996 season, but never got into a game.
Returning to the Yankees on a minor-league deal in 1997, the 30-year-old Eiland battled tendinitis and went 5-3 with a 6.42 ERA in 81.1 innings across three levels.
Eiland spent the next three years of his major league career in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays organization, splitting his time between the majors and minors as a swingman. He went 6-12 with a 6.54 ERA and 1.663 WHIP in 137.2 innings with the Devil Rays.
After the 2000 season, Eiland signed a minor league deal with the Oakland A's, but he tore his elbow and missed the entire season after getting Tommy John surgery. An attempted comeback in 2002 was ended when he retore the same ligament 51 weeks later. In those days, a second Tommy John surgery was thought to be a death sentence for a pitcher's elbow. Rather than attempting another comeback, he retired to become a pitching coach.
In interviews, Eiland -- with a career 12-27 record, with a 5.74 ERA and 1.563 WHIP -- said his major league struggles forced him to be a student of the game, and that would serve him well as a pitching coach.
“I didn’t have the God-given ability to get over the hump, so to speak. I kept getting chances because I did my work and I think that helps me in the coaching aspect. I work with guys now who have ability. I can teach them how to work, how to study film, how to read swings, how to attack guys.” -- Dave Eiland
He was a minor league pitching coach at various levels with the Yankees from 2003 to 2007, and was credited with helping the minor league development of the Yankees' trio of promising pitching prospects -- Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, and Ian Kennedy.
After Joe Girardi replaced Joe Torre as Yankee manager in 2008, Eiland was named the team's pitching coach, a position he held for three seasons. He earned a ring as the pitching coach of the 2009 World Series champions.
Eiland's contract was not renewed after the 2010 season, with Brian Cashman giving the cryptic explanation: "He knows why. He was given conditions that needed to be followed. So he knows why." In June of that season, Eiland had taken a three-week leave of absence from the Yankees which was never explained beyond it being a family issue.
After the Yankees, Eiland worked in the Tampa Bay Rays' front office and then was a pitching coach for the Royals from 2012 to 2017 (winning a second World Series ring as a coach in 2015). He served as Mets pitching coach in 2018 and 2019, and Jacob deGrom, Zack Wheeler, and Steven Matz credited their improvement as pitchers to his guidance. In 2020 he managed the Eastern Reyes del Tigre in the independent Constellation Energy League. In 2021 he was a pitching coach in the independent Atlantic League, and in 2022 and 2023, a pitching coach for the Miami Marlins' Double-A team.
Eiland is now Head of Baseball for Grand Central Sports Management.
Eiland Living
"It's about perseverance. Hard work pays off. Maybe not right away, maybe not overnight. But eventually, it does." -- Dave Eiland
Ten seasons in the Show means a lot to ballplayers. Ten seasons means you're fully vested in the pension plan. It also means you are eligible to appear on the Hall of Fame ballot (though the Baseball Writers' Association of America doesn't have to put you on the ballot, and they didn't put Eiland on it). Dave Eiland, a pitcher who described himself as someone who "worked really hard to be mediocre," worked hard enough to last 10 seasons in the majors, and that's pretty impressive.
He's also the answer to a cool trivia question and was in a pretty good baseball movie.
Definitely a Yankee worth remembering!

Professional Interest
First Prev
Carbon was just about to say something, probably to the tune of ‘we need to stay focused on the problem at hand’ when Alex spotted what was obviously a Human made dispenser tucked away in the corner, the screen all lit up and operational.
“Oh shit, is that Berkmann?” He departed from the group and made a beeline for it - as much as he could with all the furniture and strategically placed planters in the way. Sure enough, it was a Berkmann. One of the higher end dispenser manufacturers, their units started at a full meter wide and twice as tall, making them unusually large. The extra space was actually used for a larger, self-calibrating forge matrix and more matter injectors. The other hallmark was the dark blue color with a faint hint of green, in a striking translucent gloss finish that gave it an internal glow from the overhead lights.
This one a bit scuffed and dented, and an older model, but obviously functional. Yes, it was weird that it was here, but he wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to use a Berkmann. Someone had just made a chicken marsala, the scent of it still heavy in the air despite the door to the print area being sealed tight, so it must have been in great shape mechanically.
He tapped in a quick order. Just a cup of coffee. The screen was nice, real finished glass that felt like paper under his fingertip... Which just sort of encouraged him to dial through the selection for a couple extra seconds to make it a caffe macchiato. Today felt like it was going to take forever, so why not get started with espresso now? His finger hovered over the start button as he glanced over his shoulder, not wanting to be rude. “Anybody else want something?”
Carbon sighed, somewhat resigned to this being how he was. She also likely saw that they were at the start of a very long process, and not something to flip a switch and fix.
“Actually, you know what, hang on.” he tapped through the screens and added to the order - another feature generally only found in high end dispensers, this one could make several things at a time, before hitting start. “This will only take a minute.”
The Berkmann hummed, an accurate progress bar filling at an impressive rate compared to how the unit in his childhood home had managed to turn out beverages - a single cup of coffee would have taken nearly as long as this entire order. It played an elegant series of chimes and the door slid open, the dense scent of espresso wafting out. A single tiny cup of coffee and a pair of champagne flutes sat inside.
Alex picked up the stemware first, turning to hand one to Carbon, flaunting as charismatic a smile as he could muster. “We were just talking about them, and I know this thing will make a good one.”
“A Mimosa?” Carbon inquired, with yet another sigh. She still took it, shaking her head with the faintest hint of a smile, eyes rolling in as affectionate a manner as one could imagine.
“Exactly.” He extended the other to Eleya. He didn’t trust her, no. But he did need her and the technological prowess of the Empire, so he’d schmooze a little bit. “It’s orange juice and Champagne, probably a little weak compared to what I’ve seen you drinking, but it is still before noon.”
Eleya took the orange concoction, looked into the flute and held it out to one of her guards. The wavering form stepped up to it, hovering over it for roughly the time it took to run a scan on consumables, then stepped away. Eleya gave it a sip and made a quiet comment.
Carbon picked it up for him. “Interesting, and yes, very soft.”
He gave her a little nod, picked his tiny cup - scarcely more than a shot glass - out of the machine and gestured towards the stairs. “Shall we be on our way?”
“We should.” Carbon walked over and slipped her empty flute to the recycler slot on the side of the Berkmann before heading towards the stairs.
He hadn’t even seen her drinking any of it. “So what’d you think?” He asked, picking up the pace for a few steps to catch up.
“The light alcohol and bright taste would lend itself well to breakfast- ah, brunch?” She replied quietly, trying to keep their conversation between them despite the whole entourage they’d picked up. “It was also very sweet.”
Alex turned his head just a little towards her, half a grin hidden from view. “So just like me?”
She hadn’t been expecting a reply like that, and it got a laugh out of her that she quickly tried to hide in a scoff, her ears flattening and then rising back to a relaxed posture. “Sometimes.” Carbon said, a little smirk crushed as flat as she could manage as she stopped before a plain door and hit the button to request access.
It was basically just a doorbell. A muffled reply came from within and the door opened into an expansive office. The walls lined with shelving save for nearly floor to ceiling windows looking out over the common area. A nice desk, repeating that dark wood and silver metal motif that seemed prevalent, faced the windows. There was still ample room for a conference table of similar design that sat eight. The owner of the office was crouched over in a corner and rooting around in a drawer built into the wall, a pile of small boxes on the floor beside him. He didn’t look up, speaking to them in an old but energetic voice and waving a graying hand at the table.
Eleya took the seat at the head of the table, of course. Carbon in the next seat to her right, and then Alex beyond that, setting his macchiato on the table next to the bundle containing his powered-down translator. All the Guard stood close at hand, their numbers split between inside and outside the office.
Alex sipped the foam off his coffee and glanced over his shoulder, the guy they were there to meet still looking for something. He was dressed in what Alex had come to think of as normal clothes for the Tsla’o, his jacket blood red and not sporting a particularly wide cut neck. Alex leaned over to Carbon, keeping his voice down as they had outside. “Alright, so who is...”
He petered off as he noticed that several banks of the shelves had been set up like a curio display, and smack dab in the middle of one was a model of the Apollo spacecraft sitting among Tsla’o items. Not just the Lunar Module, like everyone has, no. It was the LM attached to the Command and Service Module, like it would have been on the outward bound leg of the trip to the moon. It floated, whether on magnets or some tiny antigravity device was unclear, above a little display base that stated it was the Apollo 11 flight.
A few shelves down there was a signed baseball, and a maneki-neko that had seen better days. Come to think of it, the potted plants that sat on either side of the window were both Monstera.
All of the plants in the common room had been from Earth, too. Palms, mostly, dark green and providing a nice screen to break the area up, and the broad, striped leaves of snake plants. Some sort of vines he didn’t recognize off the top of his head as well. There was an arrangement of cacti in a shallow dish sitting in the middle of the conference table.
Carbon elbowed him in the arm, eyebrows raised.
“Oh, sorry, uh... Surprised by how much Human stuff is in here.” He gestured at the cacti. “Unless Schoen has plants like these too.”
“Those are from the desert, correct? They had them as decoration in The Mothership.” She leaned over, inspecting miniature representations of their respective species. “We have something similar, yes, but none with spines I am aware of.”
“I’m pretty sure all the plants here are from Earth. It’s a little weird.” He almost continued, but the guy who’s office they were monopolizing joined them with an armload of old equipment, laying everything out in a neat row on the far side of the table before sitting down.
Some of the stuff Alex recognized, to a certain extent. A wireless power cable, for instance, was pretty obvious - it was just a cable with a node to get power from a wireless source, usually used when converting from battery power or a traditional wired plug. The very old, gray male plugged that into a box Alex did not recognize at all, a series of lights coming on before he plugged a headset into it and held it out to Alex.
It was designed for Humans, at least. A very straightforward single-sided unit with a very conventional looking earpad over the speaker, a slender arm holding the microphone just next to his mouth after he slipped it on.
The fellow who’s name Alex still did not know spoke, rapid and excited Tsla turning into perfectly understandable, if not a bit digitized, English. “Does it still work? If it does not we may have to rely on less expeditious methods of translation.”
“Yeah, I would say it does.” He hadn’t done it in awhile, but he cleaned up his speech to avoid contractions. This thing was old, it probably wouldn’t handle them as well as a modern translator. In turn, Alex’s reply was broadcast in Tsla from a small speaker on top of the box. “And uh, who are you?”
“Dena Amara, Administrator of Xenotechnology Resource Integration. At your service.” He positively beamed, grinning from ear to ear. “This is one of the translators from the first formal meeting of our races, I could not be more happy to see it still works.”
The translator did little to convey his visually obvious enthusiasm, but Alex was picking up on that. “Glad to meet you. Have you been made aware of the situation?” It took him a second to process that the Xeno in Amara’s statement meant alien to them, not to him. Explained all the Human stuff, but now how he’d gotten ahold of it.
“Only what the Empress has told me. I suspect there is more?” He said, silver fur glittering in the bright overhead light as he leaned in towards Alex. Dena was, based on how much his fur color had changed, much older than Eleya. Probably older than the Colonel, as well.
Alex launched into a rehash of the explanation he’d given Eleya when they arrived. The Administrator nodded along, and Carbon verified the translation was accurate to what he’d said before.
“That is an interesting chain of events. I am not sure about how much help we could offer.” Amara picked through his words carefully. He had his gaze directed towards Eleya the entire time, not wanting to overstep what he was actually allowed to talk about.
The Empress had spent this entire exchange leaning back in her chair, one arm crossed over her lap, still holding the champagne flute in the other. About half done with her drink so far, she took another sip before giving him a little nod. “Do not feel restrained, Administrator. He is seen and trusted, and in turn he trusts us.”
Amara grinned again, excitement back in his gray eyes as he looked at Alex. “As that is cleared up, I believe we can be of some help. The scans of your hardware have been instrumental in accelerating the development of our own machine-brain interfaces. It is fortunate that we have begun work on an implantation suite already. It is not prepared for an actual surgery, but one of the arms has been set up with a PIN driver already - more than enough to take a look at your diagnostics.”
The industrious nature of the Tsla’o had consistently impressed Alex so far - it’d been a couple of days since they had scanned him, and they were already setting up a surgical suite. Getting the hardware setup was easy enough from a scan, but the software side would be more onerous, no doubt. They might have been able to pull some of it from operational RAM, but likely not the whole operating system thanks to encryption. “Keyed PIN?”
“Keyed?” He asked, eyes searching as he tried to figure out what Alex meant. “We had noticed that the access points associated with your internal implant had randomized, recessed contacts. They are intentionally scrambled?”
The Physical Interface Needle was the only way to gain access to the implants, without popping his skull open. It was a tiny little needle, a couple of centimeters long and if his memory served, a whopping 30 gauge. Almost impossible for even the most steady living hand to install, and that was just the plain version. “Yeah, the keyed variants have subsections that need to be rotated into place after the zero pin makes contact. Standard on Amps, but not the Whisper or any of the wireless points.”
“Oh! We have been wondering about that. So, we do not have a Keyed PIN yet, but I believe we should be able to fabricate them with this information. While that is underway, we could begin diagnostics on your other systems we do have PIN’s for.”
“You’ll need a driver that can actuate the keyed sections, as well.” Alex really didn’t want to do this. He wanted to just... He wanted to go home, but a glance over at a surprisingly nervous looking Carbon reminded him that she already felt like an integral part of what home meant to him now, marriage or not. “Maybe you could help them with that while they sort out some of the other systems? I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have working on things that are going to be poking around near my brain.”
“I could, yes.” She gave him a resolute nod, a bit of direction getting those nerves cleared up a little already.
“Alright, great.” He smiled, for her alone, before turning his attention to the jacket bundle. He unfolded it, the machine sitting inert within. “Do we have someone who can take a look at my external? Would be nice to have it back, if it’s not part of the problem.”
“Of course, dear nephew.” Eleya’s reply came first, as she gestured for one of her Guard to retrieve it. The vague form walked over and folded it back up, the entire package disappearing when lifted off the table. “It was given a quick scan at dinner the other night and came back clean, but I will turn my intelligence apparatus loose upon it this time.”
Alex was sure he was never going to get used to cloaked people doing things around him. Or being related to someone who could order an intelligence agency to do their bidding, for that matter. “Thank you. Shall we get this show on the- should we get started?”
Everyone else agreed. Eleya downed the rest of her Mimosa and left with her Guard. Alex did the same with his coffee, then Amara escorted them over to the surgical suite.
“He says he wants it to be clear that this is still early in the conversion of this lab room into a surgical facility.” Carbon translated for Alex again, the 60 year old translator unable to run without the cable sitting on a power-enabled surface, and thus useless on the trip over.
“What’s that supposed to-” The doors opened and the room inside was alive with activity. The far wall was covered with racks of servers, and U shaped ring of workstations set up around the center of the room, nearly all of them currently occupied. Amara gestured for them to follow and lead them around to the open end.
It was a surgical bed in the most strict sense of the term. Literally just a flat surface with some padding on top, and a padded hole to rest your face in at the far end. Not so much as a sheet or surgical drape present. Above it they had bolted a half-dozen robotic surgical arms to the ceiling, with an admittedly impressive looking sensor array centered above where the head would go.
“It’s like something you’d put in a haunted house. All it’s missing is the pools of blood and a guy with a chainsaw.” He was pretty sure that he spoke low enough that only Carbon, standing immediately next to him, could hear.
Administrator Amara was still jazzed about this entire endeavor. His smile was just a little bit too wide to be charismatic, but it was very eager. He said something Alex didn’t recognize any of.
Carbon exhaled through her teeth, eyebrows raised as she glanced over to Alex. “He asked you to take your shirt off and lay face down on the table.”

Chapter 90! Oh man this guy is a little bit too excited to get a live victim test subject patient into the machine. Eleya seems to trust him, at least.
Also, has anybody noticed where I messed up? Not in this chapter, but in a more plot-continuity way? Figuring out a fix, shouldn't be too hard, but it was such a forehead slapping moment that I had to ask - it's been a ton of chapters though.

2024.05.27 08:31 angels27rules Why Nothing Will Ever Change

So I just recently went to the game against the Guardians on Saturday where we lost 3-4. I went with a couple friends, a few who know nothing about baseball, and it genuinely was a pretty good time. After the game one of my friends (who was sleeping half the game mind you 😭) came up to me and was like, “Dude, we gotta do this more often.” I ask him why they didn’t even win and he was just like “idk it was just a vibe.”
I love that honestly I don’t mind watching my Angels play, but it’s like I just don’t understand the appeal for non-baseball fans to go to games? Especially if the team we are supporting is always losing? Just seems like there’s so many other things we could do instead of sitting around watching the angels get pummeled. I really feel like the angels have the biggest fan base of just causal watchers.
I bring this up because I’ve really been thinking about boycotting games because I personally don’t wanna funnel any of my money to Arte, no matter how much it is. But it’s not gonna matter when non baseball fans continue to show up to games just for a chill night. I just don’t think anything is going to change with this team if nothing is changing in Artes pockets.

2024.05.27 07:18 ScientistSilent2772 BU, UM, or FSU for Pre-Med as a Transfer
