2024.05.19 13:15 ZazyzzyO Should I make each folder in my CPanel directory private?
In bluehost I just noticed after 4 years a section called "Directory Privacy"- I dont know the back end of things.
it has folders like Bin, My site, etc, logs, mail, perl5, php, public_ftp, public_html,ssl, and tmp
Which ones I should leave not private? And, did I get screwed by leaving them all open? And, by making it private does it mean no one online can figure out how to view them. Or by making it private does it mean only for people ( which is just me lol) logged on to my bluehost?

2024.05.19 12:48 Dinodog41 StLouisMO:After an illegal"self-help" eviction, should I pursue it in CIVIL or CRIMINAL court, & how collect on montary judgement if I win?
Hello: I am debating whether to take landlords to civil or criminal court. I don't know how to pursue a CRIMINAL case, and police tell me it's a "CIVIL courts matter".
I just did a civil court attempt, and the summons was sent by the summons dept at the civil courthouse by certified mail, but they did not respond, so the judge dismissed it and told me to get a lawyer and serve them by a sheriff or process server.
The court date was Aprl 8th, and on April 30th, the case info page stated the summons was sent back "return to sender".
Do you think that they saw it was from the court, did not open it, and that was somehow legal? The address was correct, and if the court said they were sending it certified mail, what I thought had to be a letter delivered i-person and signed for, was that legal?
If I pursue it as a CRIMINAL, regular court matter, do I need an attorney, and could the court appoint me one?
I was locked out of my apt, lost $ 1,000s, and landlord tried to attack me after I confronted them personally for the theft. They had also said for a month they'd let me back to retrieve my possessions, after first telling me they'd help me move, and stalled that for a month, then claimed that after 30 days of my things being at the apt, they magically became their property. AGAIN, I was LOCKED OUT, and spent a month expecting them to allow me to move my things. It was clearly a lied-about scheme.
I lost not just monetarily-costly things, but all my medicines, medical equipment, personal documents, family photos and heirlooms, work-related material when I did work, diplomas, , even my dead dog's ashes in an urn, etc.
They knew this, me BEGGING and PLEADING to be allowed in, and when I confronted them, they laughed and made a joke of it. I had lived there for almost a decade, not late on rent ever, and was being evicted "for mice" when they were there day-one, and being "messy".
Turned out, they were selling the bldg, and wanted me and my stuff out asap. They showed up the day before I was told i'd be evicted by email, demanding to take most of my possessions, and brought their truck w/ a trailer attatched.
They are extended family, and I was dealing with my nephew, we having what was a great relationship, so I trusted him when he asked if he could "use my keys" when I was on the way out of my apt to meet the landlord at the new apt. He told me we'd meet tomorrow to start moig my things, but that became a week, then month. It;s clear they ghosted me and then belieived 30 days meant I had sort of abandoed my stuff, when they locked me out and told me falsely that was the law.
What could I do? They refused to talk to me, and still do. The apt was cleaned out, so my things are gone, sold, in the trash, or furninshing their home.
My bro and I moved in 2014, and they ironically evicted him for stealing and doing drugs in 2016, and I was there until Nov of 2023.
I was only dealing with him, when his parents- the landlords- came to the apt three days after the stated eviction, and threatened me with retaliation and began banging and kicking on the door. I made a police report and sought help through the disability-related govt services.
IF I do a CIVIL case, and I win, as I'm pretty sure I would, I've read that it's my responsibility to follow up and make sure they pay the judgement. Is that true? I can easily see them not paying. I cannot afford an attorney, am disabled and on SS.
The REASON they were so ugly, doing what a regular, business-minded, non-family-related landlord would sink down to, was it was not just harmful but PERSONAL.
I have depression as well, and losing everything, including my relationship with my nephew, nearly put me over the edge. It took me nearly a month to even FIND an apt. I've sought therapy on-line to deal with it. I was in contact with a homeless shelter too, thinking i'd be homeless when no typical landlord would give a poor, broke, just-evicted, disabled person the time-of-day.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Record temperatures, record migration, record emissions,
record displacement, record PFAS……start building an ark.
Last Week in Collapse: May 12-18, 2024 This is
Last Week in Collapse, a weekly newsletter compiling some of the most important, timely, useful, soul-crushing, ironic, stunning, exhausting, or otherwise must-see/can’t-look-away moments in Collapse.

Flash flooding in northern Afghanistan
killed 300+ people and destroyed 1,000+ homes. Hundreds of thousands of others
have been affected. Last month, similar floods in the region killed 70+. Four
died in Texas storms last week as well.
Venezuela is suffering from
record wildfires, which so far this year have burned about 5M acres—almost the size of Sardinia. Some experts think indigenous people started the blaze as an attempt at forest clearance, which quickly got out of hand. “Institutional failures” compounded the disaster when the ailing government responded with an inadequate number of poorly equipped firefighters. Another
study from last week examined the impact of wildfires on soil health.
Flooding and “cold lava”
killed 50+ in Indonesia, injuring dozens and displacing several thousand.
Cold lava is a mixture of water and rocks tumbling down the side of a volcano. Meanwhile,
an actual volcano erupted in Indonesia, sending smoke & ash 5000m high; further eruptions are possible soon.
The Swiss Re Institute published a 37-page
report last week about natural disasters in 2023—and how much damage, in USD, they caused. The largest catastrophe was the February 7.8 earthquake in Türkiye & Syria, which killed 59,000+ people and caused $163B+ in damage. The report is full of interesting graphics & data about natural disasters.
“Last year, economic losses from natural catastrophes reached USD 280 billion, meaning that 62% of the global losses were uninsured….the insured losses surpassed USD 100 billion for the fourth consecutive year….annual insured losses will grow by 5–7% over the long term…today’s insured losses could double in 10 years….There were 142 insured-loss inducing catastrophes in 2023, a new record. Most were of medium severity, which we define as events resulting in losses of USD 1–5 billion….Over the last 30 years, we estimate that natural catastrophe insured losses have grown by 3 percentage points more annually than the global economy (in inflation adjusted terms)...”
Flooding and heat waves are
impacting Brazil’s oranges, responsible for about 70% of the world’s supply. One food analysts declared that the “
era of cheap food is over”—in the UK, at least. That may be one reason why
UK residents took record food bank packages last year. Madagascar is
struggling to adapt to a future with far less rainfall.
France is
growing more concerned about a dam on Lake Geneva, controlled exclusively by Switzerland. The Rhône River, which begins in Switzerland and flows south through France, is shrinking in summers as climate change melts Switzerland’s remaining glaciers.
The Tonlé San River has been dammed in Vietnam,
lowering the level in Cambodia and sometimes drying the river downstream entirely. Meanwhile, China’s lychee
harvest is getting blasted by rain, impacting the world’s largest source of lychee. And, once again,
Saudi Arabia is suffering flooding in its inland regions. 7 dead in
historic flooding in Iran.
The eminent climate scientist James Hansen
posted that, since “human-made aerosols and their cooling effect are in decline,” the cooling effect of La Niña will be counterbalanced by these rising temperatures. He also identifies a “large anomaly of increased absorbed solar radiation at midlatitudes in the Northern Hemisphere” responsible for rising temperatures there.
CO2 levels are
rising faster today than they have at any point in the previous 50,000 years…and
a study of millennia-old trees determined
last summer was the hottest worldwide in 2,000+ years…
Record nighttime
May temperatures were tied in the Philippines and Vietnam. A couple Indonesian cities
broke records for May temperatures. And a number of southern African states
saw more records drop. And Toronto saw
a record tied for the number of days reaching 14 °C (57 °F). A heat wave has
returned to Bangladesh.
Flooding in Cali (pop: 2.9M), Colombia.
The University of Washington
was ordered to stop a geoengineering project that scientists sere conducting from the deck of a decommissioned aircraft carrier. The experiment ejected aerosolized saltwater in an attempt to reflect solar radiation. A
comparative study in
Nature Communications of a number of carbon pricing found that, yes, carbon pricing does work to reduce the total CO2 emitted.
It’s that time of the year again.
Wildfires in Canada grow, some of which are moving towards the tar sands—forcing
thousands to evacuate. 39 of the total nation’s blazes are “out of control,” resulting in
air quality alerts in the United States. Meanwhile, across the Caribbean,
water shortages have become the new normal, and residents (and tourists) are finding their old consumption habits hard to change. St. Lucia has
declared a water emergency. In Myanmar,
water shortages worsen, particularly as related to the spiraling conflict.
At least ⅛ of Europeans live in a place at risk of extreme flooding—so says a 175-page
report from the European Environment Agency posted on Wednesday. The number of people living in flood-risk coastal areas in the EU & UK is expected to jump 24% by 2050. The graphics-packed report also considers how flooding will impact healthcare facilities, mental health, wastewater treatment plants, the spread of disease, cyanobacteria, permafrost thaw, and much else.
“Europe has seen devastating floods following record rainfall, droughts of magnitudes not experienced in hundreds of years, continuing sea level rise, and increasing lake and sea temperatures….permanent water stress already affects 30% of people in southern Europe….since 2018, more than half of Europe has been impacted by extreme drought conditions….Climate change is expected to increase mercury bioaccumulation in the marine food chain due to rising ocean temperatures, ocean acidification and permafrost thawing….Depression, anxiety and PTSD may persist for years after a flooding event….Under the changing climate, northern Europe is becoming wetter in general, but drier in summer. Southern Europe is becoming drier, especially in winter. For central-eastern and western Europe, the trend is less clear…” -selections from the report
Milan suffered
flooding last week, the worst May flooding in 170 years. Early spring in the UK has
disrupted migratory bird species and their usual patterns.
A 74-page
working paper which is not yet peer-reviewed claims that earlier estimates for how much GDP would be impacted by another 1 °C temperature rise is way less than it would be in actuality. The paper claims the real cost (in USD) is about 6x greater. They claim “
global temperature has much more pronounced impacts on economic activity than
local temperature” and that extreme weather is mostly behind the projected decline in productivity.
——————————
Epidemiologists are worried about how
climate change in Africa may extend the life of disease-bearers like ticks and mosquitoes. Other epidemiologists are worried about how
cattle may become a permanent reservoir for H5N1. Growing
traced of bird flu have been found in wastewater testing in the U.S., but investigators think it may be runoff from infected dairy farms.
Obesity, high blood sugar, and high blood pressure rates today globally are
50% higher than in 2000—though researchers claim that air pollution still poses a larger threat. Of a study participants in Hawai’i,
75% had respiratory issues, probably from the Maui wildfires last year.
The 2024
World Migration Report is out, and its 384 pages are not as apocalyptic as one might think. However, internally displaced people are at their all-time highest. India, Mexico, Russia, China, and Syria lead the world in emigrants;
another document contains the definitions for who exactly constitutes a migrant. Unfortunately much of the data relied upon ends in 2022. Data from this year, not included in the above report, indicates
a 40% jump in traffic through the Darien Gap compared to the same time period in 2023.
“The last two years saw major migration and displacement events that have caused great hardship and trauma, as well as loss of life….There have also been large-scale displacements triggered by climate- and weather-related disasters in many parts of the world in 2022 and 2023, including in Pakistan, the Philippines, China, India, Bangladesh, Brazil and Colombia….disinformation tactics are increasingly being used by nefarious actors with negative impacts on public, political and social media discourse on migration….Forced displacement is the highest on record in the modern era…overconsumption and overproduction linked to unsustainable economic growth, resource depletion and biodiversity collapse, as well as ongoing climate change (including global heating) are continuing to grip the world….the risk of further conflict has not been higher in decades, as military spending reached a new record high of USD 2,240 billion in 2022…” -excerpts from the introduction
Another
report, focusing on internal displacement, came out last week; its 69 pages show a cross-section of about 47M people displaced by natural disasters (56%) or armed conflict (44%). Most of the disasters were storms & flooding, and most of the conflicts were civil wars of some form. This report also provides detailed region-by-region analyses—with sub-Saharan Africa accounting for 46% of global IDPs.
“Conflict and violence triggered 13.5 million movements, the highest figure for the past 15 years….Disasters and conflict are presented as different triggers, but their impacts can overlap, often leading to repeated and/ or protracted displacement….Drought triggered 331,000 displacements in Somalia….Floods triggered 550,000 displacements in Ethiopia….Conflict and violence triggered 3.8 million displacements in DRC in 2023, a slight fall from the record four million in 2022, but still the second-highest figure globally after Sudan….nearly two-thirds of the internal displacements recorded in 2023 originated from Khartoum state. More than 39 per cent of the state's inhabitants were forced to flee, leaving entire neighbourhoods empty….Criminal and communal violence triggered nearly three-quarters of Nigeria's 291,000 conflict displacements….” -selections from the spotlight on sub-Saharan Africa
Experts are concerned about the
mental health impacts that climate change has on our minds. Hotter temperatures reportedly increase depression & aggression. Wildfires and storms can cause PTSD. Workers feel stress and desperation as their usual industries are impacted. And air pollution influences ordinary brain processes in many ways.
Some analysts believe “Peak China”
may be over, signaling a period of economic tapering-off, as well as a growing militancy.
Increasing U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods are continuing to separate the two economies. The Netherlands
finally formed a provisional government, though its proposed immigration & farming policies have set it at odds with the EU.
The Federal Reserve, the U.S. central bank, released a 46-page
report on potential climate risks to the banking system’s resilience. As far as I understood, most of the risk lies in extreme weather events and the risk to insurance agencies.
Part of southeast England experienced
an outbreak of
Cryptosporidium, a diarrhea & vomiting illness, highly contagious, which can last weeks. At least 22 cases have been reported. Meanwhile, the CDC is
issuing warnings about the more dangerous strain of m
onkeypox circulating in the DRC, although cases are currently limited to Africa.
North Carolina’s Senate
voted to ban mask-wearing last week, under the reasoning that it would make police identification of protestors difficult. An fMRI study found
lasting neurological changes in COVID survivors; they “had significantly higher cognitive complaints of mental fatigue and cognitive failure….even two years after recovering.” Experts say a
summer rise in COVID cases is coming to the United States.
A
study on The Canadian/American Great Lakes found that PFAS levels are increasing in the 3 largest lakes (Superior, Huron, and Michigan), while decreasing in the other two (Erie, Ontario). The study also found that precipitation is the primary means by which the Lakes are accumulating PFAS, since the chemicals are small & stable enough to move through the water cycle. Meanwhile, in England’s Lake District, a telecom failure resulted in
raw sewage being pumped into England’s largest and most famous lake, Windermere, on-and-off for 10 hours; and a major British water CEO
took a $4M USD pay package last year. And a look into the Chicago River’s health found that
microplastics & trash are endangering health & biodiversity.
——————————
An
assassination attempt by a
lone wolf on Slovakia’s PM left him in critical condition, but likely to survive. 11 civilians
were slain by cartel fighters in a few battles in Mexico.
Violence continues to spiral out of control in Goma, DRC.
In Haiti,
everything worsens indefinitely. Guns have reportedly entered from Florida, a phenomenon which officials call an “iron river.” Police have been
put on the defensive against the growing might of the gang warlords.
A
brawl broke out in Taiwan’s parliament. An Iranian plot was allegedly foiled to
smuggle weapons into Jordan to destabilize the pro-U.S. regime.
Dozens more died in Sudan from escalating violence around Darfur. People are
warning about “a disaster on top of a disaster” and the possibility of Sudan splitting apart. Others have
called it “hell on earth” as 1,000+ refugees cross the Chad border every day. Disease and malnutrition are growing, while famine encroaches upon 9M helpless victims of the conflict—but the world’s attention is elsewhere.
The U.S. Army Engineers
completed constructing the pier in Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid. Some 600,000 Gazans have
been displaced from Rafah already, and fighting has escalated against Hamas militants in northern Gaza.
Taliban forces
skirmished with Pakistani soldiers for about 90 minutes last week.
Taliban attacks in Pakistan, and
counterattacks have resulted in a kind of ambient disruption for the rocky border zone.
Violent protests—and
counteroperations—
are continuing in New Caledonia (pop: 270,000), a Pacific island part of overseas France. The riots, which have killed 6 people so far, began after metropolitan France proposed a plan to expand voting rights beyond indigenous residents. A
state of emergency has been declared amid worries about a spiral of violence taking hold.
As the Sahel dries out, experts are concerned about the
links to rising terrorism in the region. The Sahel accounts for over 40% of global terrorism deaths—according to the analysts’ understanding of “terrorism.” Mali in particular has reportedly become home to 41 new, different non-state armed groups (NSAGs) since 2007. A
contested election in Chad resulted in the consolidation of the
interim leader’s power.
“If governments are continually unable to solve regional issues, the people will be at the whim of any terror group that has a basic organization. It serves these groups’ interests to promote insecurity where they can and create security where they want. A “hearts and minds” campaign in the Sahel could lead to long-term and locally supported insurgencies in a land that is currently rife with civil strife.” -from the article
Some wargamers
concluded that a Trump victory in 2020 would spell the end of NATO, or at least the end of its utility. Vladimir Putin
replaced his minister of defense with a top economic advisor, just before
going to Beijing to reaffirm their friendship with “no limits.” Some say
Putin is planning on a forever war. Some say
NATO is gearing up for one, too.
Russia
made several gains in the suburbs of Kharkiv,
seizing several settlements which some analysts doubt they will hold. Putin
claims they aren’t really trying to take Kharkiv anyway… Russia also
made small progress in the Donbas—although they
suffered their largest one-day casualties since the start of the war. The U.S.
allocated another $2B to hasten the delivery of weapons to the front lines. The
next weeks will be crucial on the front. Switzerland has
invited 160+ nations to send delegates to a peace summit intended to design a path to making peace in this War.
——————————
Select comments/threads from the subreddit last week suggest: -Brazil’s flooding was really, really bad, judging from
this post and its accompanying images. Across just one of Brazil’s 26 states, 600,000+ people have been made homeless,
100+ have died, and the storm season isn’t over yet. Some of the flooding isn’t expected to subside for another month.
-
How specifically might climate change make humanity extinct?
This thread crowdsources a number of plausible ways, from ordinary famines to nuclear war and even a massive deoxygenation process. I tend to think it will be a consequence of an eventual nuclear exchange, followed by extended famine and disease.

2024.05.19 12:05 Hirai-kun Impossible to play / get into the game
So I try to get into the game for almost a week now and I run out of ideas what else to try to login. The website just won't load for me. So far I managed to get a very few times (about 1-2 times each day) into the game and it worked fine for like 5-10 minutes, then the game just seems like to "lose connection" or something, I have to reload and the site won't load again until I get lucky within some hours of reloading from time to time. Longest play was about 15mins so far. A few times I managed to login were about 22k ppl online and 36k online, so I think it might be not a server issue.
I tried so far:
- using different browsers / with and without extensions
- trying out the app, same issues
- using different proxy servers and dns, didn't help
- not using any fancy antivirus software, only the standard setup of windows defender
- same problem on my phone and other pc / laptop
Does someone has a similar issue or any idea what else I can try to get it to work? I would love to play this game cuz it's so much fun but I would prefer the online instead of offline mode, just for safety reasons as well.
(and for the haters, no I don't cry about it, I just share my experience and looking for advice / help on this problem)

2024.05.19 12:04 True-Trick-345 Insurance claim I gave up on showing on insurance policy
Hi all,
I was checking my insurance policy on line today and saw a claim for £3000 from June 2021... I made a claim in summer 2021 but never got any money for it. Is it normal for the insurer to put a value on a claim they didn't pay out and put it on my record?
The claim (if anyone is interested): I flooded my house during the cooling off period for my insurance policy being taken out. I left the bathroom tap on and went to work for 12 hours (I have ADHD). I called the insurer the next morning and spoke to a guy who was working from home who told me to get a quote from a builder and call back. It took like 4-6 weeks to get that quote because it was COVID and everyone was either busy or isolating. When I called back they had no record of my original call. They asked me to send in all the documents and wait a few weeks to process, then they moved it to another department. That department asked me to send everything again and wait a few weeks for processing. They did this a few times with each department asking for the same documents to be sent again. During this time my kitchen, lounge and bathroom were a mess but they told me I couldn't start work to get it fixed or they wouldn't cover it. After several months they came right out and told me they thought it was a false claim, their reasons being :
- They didn't believe I had made the first call to their service and I didn't post pictures of the damage on social media. This was evidence to them that I had flooded the house then taken out the insurance policy.
- I only had contents insurance which was evidence that I had only taken out one policy that I intended to claim on (I had both home and contents, both with them, but I hadn't claimed on the contents because I had a £500 excess and don't think my stuff was worth that, so they assumed I didn't have it)
- They said that I had changed my story. This whole transferring departments and asking for the documents to be sent again was their investigation against me, and they said I had sent in different information. I knew this wasn't true because I had literally forwarded the same email each time.
- They said I had changed the date it happened. They said I had told them one date on the phone then showed them photos dated a week earlier. I had actually told them on the phone that I didn't remember the date but it had been during the cooling off period of the policy, so the lady I was speaking to put the last day of the policy. The photos I had were from the week before (half way through the policy).
I was naive going into this, I have learnt a lot about insurers.
I realised they weren't going to pay out and I was sick of living in a building site so I got it sorted myself. It was the underwriter Southern Rock whom I had this running with.
I am just wondering why it says I claimed for £3000 because my builders estimate was less than half that.

- Downvoting is reserved for comments that don’t contribute, and shouldn't be used to indicate disagreement.
- If you believe someone is in violation of the subreddit rules, please either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.
- Suspected brigading will be reported to reddit admins.
10. No Porn, Spam, Blogs, or Research Studies/Surveys Without Mod Approval
Just don't. - This is a SFW subreddit. Posting pornography will result in immediate post removal and permanent ban.
- Advertising on the subreddit (outside of Reddit's own advertising) is not allowed.
- No personal blog posts are allowed without express moderator permission.
- No advertising without prior mod approval.
- No asking for money/posting fundraisers/etc.
- For links to parenting research studies or surveys, please message the mods for permission before posting.
11. Disputes in Modmail Only
Don't argue with the mods on the sub. - Any issues specifically related to how a mod is moderating should be addressed to the full moderating team via mod mail. This ensures that all mods are aware of any concerns and prevents disintegration of the topic thread at hand.
- This means to do not message or send chat requests to individual mods. All discussion and complaints about mod actions need to be done in mod mail ONLY. Failure to follow this rule can result in an immediate permanent ban.
- Comments in threads asking about mod decisions are subject to removal without notice.
12. Moderator Actions
We aren't kidding. - Users are expected to know the rules before posting. If you are warned or banned for violating the rules, ignorance is not an excuse.
- Moderators will remove posts and comments and/or lock threads in accordance with the rules above. Typically this happens when threads have gone off-topic in a way that is not productive for the OP, or comments overall have become contentious or disrespectful.
- If a poster continues to argue or to willfully violate these rules, temporary and permanent ban procedures will be followed. Any attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban. User bans will not be discussed in the sub. Questions posted about user bans are subject to removal and the poster subject to warning/ban procedures. The mod team will not discuss a specific user ban with anyone other than the user involved.
- New accounts are subject to manual approval until they are no longer deemed "new" by the mod team. This helps to weed out trolls and ban evaders.
- We rely on Automoderator to scan for specific words and phrases that are not welcome here and notify the mod team to review the comment or post. This includes slurs of any type and platitudes such as "Love them as your own!"
- The mod team uses a combination of blacklisting and banning when dealing with trolls.
- We employ the use of a bot that automatically bans anyone who comments in subs that have historically harassed our users. If you are picked up by the bot for telling trolls to get fucked, reach out via mod mail and we'll get you sorted out.
- The rules above as well as ban procedures are considered guidelines only; some deviation may be necessary on a case by case basis and/or at the mod team's discretion.
13. Ban Procedure
These actions are at moderator discretion. - Pornography will result in an automatic permanent ban.
- Extremely egregious content will result in an immediate permanent ban.
- You may receive a 7 or 30 day temporary ban for first and second rule violations, depending upon severity.
- Continued rule violations will result in a permanent ban.
- Willful attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban.
- We recognize the reddit site-wide rules of using alt names to get around bans and will ban those as well as report them to reddit admins.
- Shortest version? Don't be an asshole. People come here for support and advice, they do not come here to be yelled at or told they are the reason everything is going sideways. There are ways to point out that someone may want to do some reflection on their own actions and reactions without being an asshole about it.
- The purpose of this subreddit is to provide support and a sense of belonging for struggling stepparents. We aren't here to pass judgement, but rather to offer support, empathy, and constructive commentary. That does not include "hard truths" or "tough love." Stepparents get enough of that in every other subreddit, we're not passing it out here. Be respectful.
- Remember, most people aren't going to come to a sub like this when everything is going great and everyone is getting along. People are coming here when they are down, when they are feeling defeated and stretched to the limit. Kicking someone when they are down is shitty behavior and we don't tolerate it.
What about being kind to the kids?
- "Won't somebody think of the children?" Pearl clutching isn't needed here. If you read the Kindness Matters rule closely, you will see that there is a clause in there about name calling children. We don't allow it. We also don't allow people rolling in telling OP that they feel sorry for their stepkids because OP is feeling overwhelmed and overloaded.
- If anyone is advocating slapping, spanking, or any other form of violence, report the comment immediately. We do not advocate violence towards children of any sort. The mod team does not advocate any sort of physical punishment at any time.
- Venting about behaviors is not the same as insulting the kids. However, if you see a post or comment where kids are being name called or dragged to the point of no return, use the report button. We try to catch the posts and remove them before they hit the sub, but we cannot see every comment without your help. Use the report button to bring problematic comments to our attention. Don't engage in a war of words on our subreddit.
Why is this sub such an echo chamber?
- Not allowing contributors to pile on and tell OP that they are a terrible human being who should never be around children does not equate to being an echo chamber. Many contributors here will offer OP suggestions to help them work through their resentments and frustrations, and the most egregious situations are called out. We simply ask that it be called out with respect.
- If you feel that a post is simply too much for you to handle without following the rules, move on to another post.
- If you believe that a post itself is crossing the rules report it. If the mod team has approved the post, it is because the mod team believes that the OP needs help from the community or needs a moment to vent and move on from their vent. That does not give you license to pile on disrespectfully. Unless it is proven that OP is a bot, assume that OP is a human being with real thoughts and feelings and has posted from a place of vulnerability.
Why can't I tell OP that they are an asshole?
- Because this isn't a judgement sub. We aren't AITA, we don't want to be AITA.
- Comments with terms like YTA, NTA, ESH, NAH will be removed.
- Don't start your posts with INFO either. We generally recognize that as a fishing attempt for more information to pass judgement on OP, and again, we are not a judgment sub.
But OP asked if they were an asshole?!
- Their post somehow got past our automoderator. Just use the report button. We will address it with OP.
- If you've asked if you are an asshole, a-hole, a*hole, a**hole, whatever, don't be surprised if your post is removed without warning. This isn't a judgment sub. If you want judgment, you know where to go.
What is a gendered slur?
- While it seems that everyone understands what racist slurs are, people struggle understanding the concept of gendered slurs. Generally speaking, we are talking about derogatory nouns or verbs that are used to negatively describe people or situations based on gendered terms.
- We've gone back and forth on this a few times, and the truth is, we get it, it's your safe space and you want to be able to vent about BM/BD how you want to vent about them, without us telling you how to vent about them. Fair enough. Vent away. What we are going to stick to here how people are referring to other users and to stepchildren.
- Examples that are not allowed:
- "My SD is such a little bitch."
- "She dresses/acts like a slut."
- "My SS acts like a pussy."
- "My SS is such a beta male."
- "You are all fucking whores."
- "Any dude who is raising some sluts kids is a cuck!"
- "Little Lord Fauntleroy over here thinking he runs the house!"
- "You're just the bangnanny, get used to it."
- Don't call users here names, don't call stepchildren names.
- Masking the term with asterisks or other neat little tricks might get you around the bot, but if we see it, we're removing it and quite possibly giving you a time out. The intended word is still there and you deliberately tried to skate the rule.
- As there is not enough space to list every term that is offensive and does not belong, nor every situation in which term or phrase may be allowable in context, this rule is enforced based on moderator discretion.
Seriously? You are the language police now?
- We're here to talk about stepparenting. And we would like for that to happen in a respectful way. Attacking each other doesn't help. Belittling stepchildren draws in trolls who don't understand your frustration, all they see is an evil stepmonster talking shit on the internet about a poor, innocent baby. Yes, even if that "poor, innocent baby" just robbed you blind and set fire to the house on their way out the door. That's just how it goes.
- We are aware that this is a relatively new rule and a lot of older posts and comments contain a lot of problematic language, including some from mods themselves. We are growing and evolving, and rules change as the sub grows and evolves.
What does No Drama really mean?
- Pretty much what it says, do not bring drama from other subs into this sub. Do not engage in vote brigades. Do not try to incite other subscribers to riot in a different sub. Don't follow posters into this sub from other subs to continue to harass them. Do not badger someone or derail threads. Do not harass community members because you don't agree with them. There's enough drama in the daily lives of subscribers, more isn't needed.
What is thread derailment?
- When a comment chain has devolved to the point where all you are doing is arguing back and forth with someone about the same thing over and over again, you have derailed the thread. Also known as bickering. It's what children do. We assume if people are in a stepparent role they are adults. We expect you to act like it.
- If you aren't a stepparent, or in a stepparenting role, consider that perhaps this subreddit isn't for you. If you want to participate, do so with respect. Thread derailment, arguing, bickering, and nitpicking are not allowed.
But what if they didn't answer my question?
- No one has to answer your questions. This is a support sub, not an inquisition. Jumping on a bandwagon with "OP is evading the question" in a 20 comment long chain is the epitome of thread derailment. You'll find more information about trolling below and how this might be considered such.
Why am I being silenced? I'm just asking for a back and forth!
- Thread derailment, badgering, and nitpicking are considered harassment. Continued harassment of either community members or mods will get you banned.
Why can't I look at someone's post history and comment about it?
- No mod in the history of this sub has ever once said post histories are forbidden. What we do frown upon is using someone's post history to attack, belittle, or otherwise harass someone.
- Example Post: "My stepkid's mom really hates me. How can I make this better?"
- Okay: "Based on the timeline and your post history, it looks like this may have started as an affair. Unfortunately there's going to be outstanding issues for a long time due to that. Try focusing on yourself and how you can move forward without worrying about how someone else feels about you."
- Not Okay: "Holy shit! You were the OW! What the hell do you expect, homewrecker?!"
- Example Post: "I am completely overloaded and feeling very down about myself."
- Okay: "In your post history you mentioned that your spouse wasn't really helping around the house. Has that changed at all?"
- Not Okay: "LOL, you already got the answers you need in your post on relationships. You are stupid for sticking with your lazy spouse."
Why can't we crosspost stuff to other subs?
- We can't stop you from doing so. The problem isn't that something has been crossposted, it's when the community that it's been crossposted to feels the need to come over here and harass OP. When we see that happening, we lock the post and start passing out bans. If you did the crossposting, you'll be banned. If you participated in the brigading, you'll be banned.
What if it's my own post?
- Again, we can't stop you from doing so. We prefer that you don't technically crosspost, but rather just copy and paste your post. Why? Because inevitably the above will happen. Redditors from other subs will follow you back to /stepparents and start attacking users here. It just happens.
What is "brigading"?
- Reddit defines vote manipulation and brigading as follows:
- Using multiple accounts, voting services, or any other software to increase or decrease vote scores.
- Asking people to vote up or down certain posts, either on Reddit itself or through social networks, messaging, etc. for personal gain.
- Forming or joining a group that votes together, either on a specific post, a user's posts, posts from a domain, etc.
- We, along with pretty much every other subreddit that has ever had to deal with this nonsense, further define brigading as this: You saw a post on another sub that linked to our sub either via a link in a comment or a crosspost. It was basically saying something along the lines of "OMG, check out these assholes over on /stepparents! They literally hate all their stepkids!" And then you and your friends come over and start hammering on OP and telling OP how much they suck. Congrats, you have just participated in a brigade.
- If you see a post or comment that breaks the rules, instead of engaging, report it. When you report it, it sends notification to the mod team. We will act on it where appropriate. Engaging with bad faith users may result in your comments being removed. If you repeatedly do so, you may end up being banned.
What if I see an obvious troll?
What if they are being really mean in comments?
What if they are harassing me in private messages?
- Step 1: Report them to admins. You can report harassment to reddit by using this link or send a DM to reddit admins. Include the link to the DM, admins can see your inbox and providing a direct link is helpful for them to weed out bad actors.
- Step 2: Block the person so they cannot directly contact you again.
- Step 3: Send us a mod mail and let the mod team know. Tell us who they are and what they said, send us a screenshot if you can - admins can see your DMs, mods can't. We'll take action where necessary by banning from the sub if they aren't already banned.
- Just as we prefer to not be linked to or crossposted from, we do not allow linking to or calling out other subs by name. If you see something you want to share, say it's a hot post that has hit the front page and a stepparent is being absolutely flayed, just refer to it as "that hot post that hit the front page." If you want to complain about other places in general, "other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice. Absolutely under no circumstances should you link to anywhere else.
I can't link to other subs?
- Do not directly link to another sub. (e.g.: "/insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
- Do not name other subs. (e.g.: "I won't link to it directly, but insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
- Do not abbreviate other subs. (e.g.: "I know that ISNH is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
I can't ping other users?
- Do not summon another user with a username ping/tag. (e.g.: "insertusernamehere was being an asshole.")
- If you are agreeing with someone, it is okay to link to them. (e.g.: "I agree with insertusernamehere, you need to take a couple of steps back and reflect on this.")
- Sanctimonious, overused clichés that grossly oversimplify the stepparenting experience are neither wanted nor allowed here. We have all heard it a thousand times before, we don't need to hear it again. It's not nearly as insightful and wise as some would like to think.
Why don't you people understand it's a package deal?
- Any comment that suggests that OP should have known what they were getting involved with, or that they needed to understand that the kids were part of some package they needed to accept before signing up for marriage is subject to immediate removal.
- This is one of the most insensitive things you can say to a stepparent. Most stepparents were aware of the children, but they were probably not aware of all of the family dynamics.
Why can't you just love them like they are your own?
- Demanding that a stranger you do not know love children that are not biologically theirs as if they were theirs can be incredibly damaging to someone who is already in a vulnerable situation. Any comment that falls along these lines will be removed.
What do you mean by No Trolling? I was just...
- No means no. No trolling. No pretending to be a stepparent and then whipping out the Greatest Hits Bingo Card of The Worst Stepparent in the History of Stepparents. We see you. We've seen you a thousand times.
What does "concern trolling", "gish-galloping", and "sealioning" have to do with stepparenting? This isn't a debate sub, why are you using debate terms?
- That's absolutely right, this isn't a debate sub. And yet, here we are, day after day, having to defend ourselves against this sort of thing. So, enough. No more. Usage of any of these things will get you banned.
What is "Concern Trolling?"
- A concern troll is someone who disingenuously visits sites of an opposing ideology to disrupt conversation by offering unwanted advice on how to solve problems which do not really exist.
- Example Post: OP expresses concern that she will feel, and possibly act, differently towards her stepchildren after her husband decides that no, he doesn't want anymore children after all.
- Example Concern Troll pulled from actual mod mail after their comment was removed: "Possible child abuse claims need to be sorted out well before whatever empathy you believe the OP was looking for."
What is a "Devil's Advocate"?
- "I'm just playing devil's advocate here, but have you considered that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break, too?" BM has dozens of different mom based subs alone on reddit she can complain on, this sub is for stepparents. The stepparent doesn't need to consider that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break.
"Gish-galloping?" What does that even mean?
- The Gish Gallop is the fallacious debate tactic of drowning your opponent in a flood of individually-weak arguments in order to prevent rebuttal of the whole argument collection without great effort. The Gish Gallop is a conveyor belt-fed version of the on the spot fallacy, as it's unreasonable for anyone to have a well-composed answer immediately available to every argument present in the Gallop.
And "sealioning?" What's that?
- Sealioning involves jumping into a conversation with endless polite, reasonable questions and demands for answers, usually of entry-level topics far below the actual conversation (e.g. "please prove sexism exists"). This tactic differs little from harassment; instead of discussion, the point is to derail discussion, receive criticism (for their ignorance) so as to look like a victim, or to make someone feel overwhelmed and quit talking.
Who gets to define what is considered asshattery?
- The mod team, of course! If we feel that comments are out of line, are trolling, are leading up to a fight or "just asking questions", we are going to remove them and most likely ban the offender.
Posting Guidelines for Stepparents
- Body text is required, we suggest you use line breaks between paragraphs as a wall of text is difficult to read. Posts that have only a title are likely to be removed. Instead of using names (even fictitious ones), try to use the sub acronyms. It helps our users to follow along if you use the acronyms and not names.
- Assign a post flair that accurately describes what your post is about and what you are seeking. If you are posting an update from a previous post, include a link to that post.
- Flairs are applied to posts to determine what a person is looking for. When submitting a new post, you should choose a flair that specifies if you are looking for advice, support, etc. The following link flair is available and is color coded with side bar links so that you can search by flair:
- Advice - For when you are specifically asking for advice or help.
- Announcement - Mod Use Only, for subreddit announcements.
- Daily (Formerly TTP) - Mod Use Only, for our daily discussion threads.
- Discussion - A little advice, a little "How does your family handle this?"
- JustBMThings - Pretty sure this is self explanatory!
- Legal - Asking for legal advice? Tag it with this!
- Miscellany - Just a sort of off topic thing? Use this tag.
- Resource - Sharing a good resource or asking for one? This is the tag you need!
- Support - For those days when you want nothing but a good old fashioned cry and some community love.
- Update - Updating us on something that you posted about previously? Use this one!
- Vent - We all need to vent sometimes. Respect the tag as a vent. This isn't how OP talks all day every day.
- Win! - Celebrate those wins with us with this tag!
- Megathread - Mod Use Only, for large mega threads (typically around major calendar events.)
Posting Guidelines for Bioparents
- Stepparents is a support community for stepparents, by stepparents. As bioparents, you may want to have more insight into how the stepparent in your life feels or thinks. You may have questions on how to ease the transition for your partner. However, please keep in mind that this community was not created for you. It was created for your partner or your ex's partner. If you are seeking support on how to deal with a stepparent, there are other subs more suited for your situation and your post is subject to removal.
- There are some posts from bioparents we will accept:
- Seeking advice on how to support your partner as they navigate stepparenting
- Seeking resources to help you better support your partner
- Seeking resources for your partner
- There are some posts from bioparents we will not accept:
- Complaints about how the stepparent is too involved in your kids lives
- Vents about how the stepparent is not involved enough in your kids lives
- "Cautionary tales" advising stepparents to back off
- Seeking advice on how to tell the stepparent to back off
- The Do's and Dont's of Stepparenting
- How your kid's stepmom is literally The Worst
- Comments from bioparents that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from bioparents that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. There are several other subs that may meet the needs of bioparents better than we can. We recommend /coparenting, /parenting, /parents, /blendedfamilies, and /singleparents as starting points.
Guidelines for Stepkids
- At this time, we do not generally accept posts from stepkids. Comments from stepkids that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from stepkids that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. If you are a stepkid seeking support, we highly recommend /stepkids. It is a very supportive community specifically for stepkids. We also recommend /blendedfamilies as another potential group for support.
What the heck are all these acronyms? I'm confused!
Why aren't my posts or comments showing up?
- New posters and accounts go through a waiting period before their posts will show in the sub and the comments on posts automatically. During the new account approval period the mod team will check posts to be sure you aren't attempting to circumvent a ban with a shiny new account. Please be patient while the timer runs down on your "new" status and the mod team approves your posts and responses.
Why was my comment removed?
- Comments are removed when they do not follow the rules of the sub. These rules are published in several places for your reading pleasure.
- Comments are removed at moderator discretion. In some cases your comment may be removed while another remains up. If you find this to be the case, and you believe the comment to be violating the rules, instead of arguing with mods or demanding they remove the additional comments, just report it.
This comment/post is really offensive! Why is it still up?
- All moderators are volunteers and have busy real lives. Sometimes things get past us. The best thing you can do is report anything you find offensive or inflammatory. It's the quickest and most reliable way of alerting us to an issue.
I've received a hurtful/unwanted PM from someone about my recent post. What should I do?
- If you receive an unwanted/hurtful PM from a name you don't recognize, please report it to Reddit Admins using our handy pre-populated form. Be sure to include the permalink to the message. We've been dealing with a few unhappy folks who like to attack stepparents, and reporting it to the admins is the only way to make it stop.
What are the general moderator guidelines?
I've been wrongly banned/Why can't I comment here?
Why was I banned without warning?
- There are numerous reasons that the mod team might opt to move perm banning without warning. Message the moderators if you have specific questions.

2024.05.19 11:40 NEPTNLLC Custom 92Xi
| Hey guys, I wanted to share with yall my (potential one of a kind) 92Xi, it started out as a SAO Tactical, I've since fully deleted the frame mounted safety (replaced it with the older style hammer pin.), replaced the Frame mounted safety grips with regular styled Vertec grips (planning on ordering some Wilson Combat G10 grips), Converted it from SAO to DA/SA and milled down the Beretta flat trigger to be able to use it for DA/SA. Other mods done, I added a PMM Compensator, Wilson Combat Fluted GuideRod, WilCo shock buffer, the WilCo Deluxe hammer, added a GasPedal, added a Beretta D Spring (cant really tell much of a difference between that and the original spring for the SAO.) (hopefully someone can elaborate more on the specifics of each spring here.), added the Beretta Magwell along with 2 +2 mag extensions, and finally scored out the rear sight white dots and blacked them out (completely just preference to have 1 dot in the front.) Out of everything I did, removing the safety was a total PITA. I basically had to find a small enough nail, file it down to where it would fit in the roll pin hole at the bottom of the safety and slowly work it out all while trying not to bend the nail, drilling it out was quickly becoming my only option but it's a heat treated roll pin... you're not easily drilling that out. Once apart, I removed the detent and spring out of the operators left hand side and took out the hammer bushing (the hollow pin that holds the hammer in place) and replaced it with the older style hammer pin (part #36 on midwest Gunworks site). For the SAO > DA/SA conversion that was a lot easier than expected! All I had to do was switch out the hammer, and trigger, however I elected to retain the original Flat trigger. To do that once you remove the trigger if you look at the back of it there's a nub (only was I can explain it) on the operators right hand side, file it down to match the left side of the trigger and that's all you need! If you want you can compare it to a standard trigger. I just went off of pictures from midwest gunworks because I was too impatient to wait for the mail to get delivered lol. obviously both conversions require you to fully take apart your frame As for the PMM Compensator, spend the extra $10 and get the Muschi Mounting Block, I also used Rockset instead of loctite fir my install. If you made it this far in my post. I wanted to thank you for taking the time, if you plan on doing anything similar to your 92 don't be afraid to! I'll be here to answer any questions you might have! submitted by NEPTNLLC to Beretta [link] [comments] |
2024.05.19 11:38 spyr0technic Singapore VGC Nationals
| Today (19 May) was the Singapore VGC Nationals tournament. 64 players were invited, vying for Top 8 to get a Worlds Invite, or top 2 for an Invite and Travel Award. Having played in Limitless tours, PCs, MSS and Regionals overseas, I can say that this was the absolute worst VGC tournament I have ever participated in. The tournament was held with the Regulation F ruleset, with invites sent to the top 64 Singapore players in the Global Challenge III. Before the event, the emails and forms for registration & sign ups kept having mistakes. TPC sent 4 different emails to correct a mistake in the previous mail (Picture 1). There was even a mistake on the team registration date. It was changed from 7 to 15th May, to 7 to 17th May - on the night of 15th May. Now comes the worst parts in my opinion, the actual event. The event was for 64 players, and only 43 checked in on the day. Because it was single elimination, 21 players got first round byes (Picture 2 for a snippet of the bracket). These players could see who they were up against next, and had over an hour to prepare for their round 2 matches. This also allowed detailed information gathering on opponents if you had friends playing in the tournament. How much of an advantage was a round 1 bye? see picture 3! They posted every participant's OTS on a board for everyone to see. People were taking pictures of their future opponents OTS and doing calcs and discussing strats even before round 1 began. I didnt stay long after I got eliminated, but in picture 2, every person (less table 8) who had the round 1 bye made it to top 32. The judges said during player briefings that everyone had to stay at their assigned tables throughout the tournament (and that we had to seek their permission if we wanted a toilet break). However this rule seemed to be completely ignored during the tournament, as the 21 players with round 1 byes were walking around freely to watch matches or discuss strats etc. And the OTS. When were natures part of OTS?? (pic 4 for reference) I dont think I need to elaborate how this detail is such a huge change in OTS. Imagine if this was done in Worlds Hawaii?? As a participant, I was hugely disappointed in how this was run and so angry with the organisers when I got knocked out in round 2. (My round 2 opponent was discussing strats and calcs with my round 1 opponent after my first match) I dont mind being eliminated if I was outplayed or outmatched by my opponent. But the way this tournament was run felt like my round 2 opponent had such a huge advantage against me and I was helpless against it. I just wanted to gather opinions on this, especially for players who have been playing in US/EU/AU. Does this tournament just give you the feeling that something is off? submitted by spyr0technic to VGC [link] [comments] |
2024.05.19 11:25 No-Article159 Cloudflare Email Space
I want to purchase a private email space with Cloudflare from the settings section of my iPhone. And I want to use the e-mail address that I will open with this new domain name so that people can reach me on social media and various sites. I also back up my photos and phone on my iCloud account. Is this safe? Can my iCloud e-mail address, which is my main Apple ID, be found through the domain name I created?

Decentralization can mean a lot of things because it can be open to interpretation. In this article, we would like to talk about what decentralization means to us and how we are approaching our definition of decentralized. We are working on a typical chat app, but our approach is unique and may push the boundaries of what it means for something to be self-hosted. Our decentralized chat application is built as a Progressive Web Apps (PWA) and leverages modern web technologies to deliver a user experience comparable to native apps. Unlike traditional centralized chat apps, our chat app is designed to operate independently of central servers, ensuring that user data remains private and secure. This article will delve into the various components and architectural decisions that make our app truly decentralized. The Decentralized Chat App An overview of how our chat application leverages Progressive Web App (PWA) technology to provide a seamless user experience across different devices and platforms. https://preview.redd.it/ntyghqt5oc1d1.png?width=1100&format=png&auto=webp&s=f273717c0c26ef5befcd303fc45de104af63f8d0 Data Storage and Networking A typical app relies heavily on data storage and networking capabilities. In our decentralized chat application, we’ve implemented advanced solutions to handle these aspects efficiently and securely. Data Storage In our app, we use IndexedDB to store data directly in the browser’s storage. While browsers provide multiple options for storing information, ranging from cookies to local storage, IndexedDB offers a more advanced and robust solution. Capacity: IndexedDB can store significantly larger amounts of data compared to cookies or local storage. Structure: It allows for complex data structures, including collections of files and blobs. Performance: IndexedDB operates asynchronously, meaning it won’t block the main thread of your application, leading to better performance for data-heavy applications. Using IndexedDB, we ensure that user data is stored locally on their devices, providing both privacy and independence from central servers. Networking For networking, our app uses PeerJS-server as a connection broker to establish WebRTC connections between peers. Direct Peer-to-Peer: WebRTC, provided by the browser, enables real-time communication between peers. This allows two users to connect directly and exchange data with minimal latency. Efficient Routing: Once a connection is established, data is sent via the shortest possible network route, enhancing speed and efficiency. Multiple Connections: Browsers can handle multiple WebRTC connections simultaneously, though the number of connections can vary depending on the device and network capabilities. PeerJS-server helps in the initial connection setup by acting as a signaling server. It facilitates the exchange of connection information between peers, enabling them to establish a direct WebRTC connection. By leveraging IndexedDB for data storage and WebRTC with PeerJS-server for networking, our chat application achieves a high level of decentralization, ensuring user data remains private and connections are efficient and reliable. These components form the backbone of our approach, pushing the boundaries of what it means for an app to be truly self-hosted and decentralized https://preview.redd.it/ww704u7foc1d1.png?width=1100&format=png&auto=webp&s=0c4d4958a38747a4b0410c4c8526e0fd941fac35 Static Distribution and Deployment Our app is essentially a bundle of static files, which makes it highly portable and easy to distribute. We leverage AWS services such as S3 and CloudFormation to deploy our app, ensuring it is distributed efficiently over a Content Delivery Network (CDN) across AWS servers. AWS S3 and CloudFormation AWS S3: We host our app on AWS S3, a scalable storage service that allows us to serve static files reliably. S3 ensures that our app is always available and can handle large numbers of requests without performance degradation. CloudFormation: By using AWS CloudFormation, we automate the deployment process, managing our infrastructure as code. This makes it easy to replicate and manage our app’s deployment environment. Hosting on S3 and using CloudFormation means our app benefits from AWS’s global CDN. This ensures that our static files are cached and served from servers closest to our users, reducing latency and improving load times. Offline Availability and Self-Hosting We go a step further by providing users with the option to download a zip file of the app directly from within the app. This ensures that users can run the app locally without relying on our servers. Direct from Index.html: Unlike some other apps, our app is a pure JavaScript implementation, designed to run directly from the index.html file. Users can simply open this file in their browser and start using the app without needing a server. Docker Option: For users who prefer or require a server setup, we offer a Docker configuration. This allows the app to be run in a containerized environment, providing flexibility and ease of deployment for different use cases. Unminified Code for Transparency We believe in transparency and accessibility. Therefore, we run the app as unminified code. This has several advantages: Ease of Download: Users can download the entire app using simple browser commands like Ctrl/Cmd+S. Transparency: By providing unminified code, we ensure that users can inspect and understand the code they are running. This fosters trust and allows for easier customization and debugging. By distributing our app as static files and offering multiple ways to run it, we ensure that users have maximum flexibility and control. Whether using AWS’s robust infrastructure or running the app locally, our approach embodies the principles of decentralization and user empowerment. Webpack 5 Module Federation Our app leverages Webpack 5’s Module Federation feature to implement a microfrontend architecture. This approach allows us to modularize our application, making it easier to maintain, develop, and scale. You can explore our open-source implementation here: https://github.com/positive-intentions/frontend-base. Current Implementation We have used Webpack 5 Module Federation to build the chat application, which you can find here: https://github.com/positive-intentions/chat. Additionally, we have created a federated module for cryptography that can be imported at runtime, available here: https://github.com/positive-intentions/cryptography. Our current setup is straightforward, allowing us to dynamically load different parts of the application as needed. This modular approach provides flexibility and efficiency in how we develop and deploy our app. Future Enhancements We plan to further decompose the application into separate microfrontends, each responsible for a specific aspect of the app. This will not only simplify maintenance but also enhance documentation and development processes for individual components. Planned Modules: 1. UI Components: A collection of reusable UI components that can be shared across different parts of the application, promoting consistency and reducing duplication. 2. P2P Framework: The core framework for peer-to-peer networking, facilitating real-time communication between users. 3. State Management: This module will manage the application’s state, ensuring efficient data handling and synchronization across different components and peers. 4. Permission Manager: A dedicated module for managing user permissions and access control, enhancing security and user management. https://preview.redd.it/w16teobjoc1d1.png?width=1100&format=png&auto=webp&s=9305db7dc16981aaf8499bfa2a7aade3c44a06d2 Individual Storybooks and Module Exports Each module will have its own Storybook and module export, providing a dedicated space for documentation, testing, and showcasing individual components. This approach will: Enhance Documentation: Each module will be well-documented, making it easier for developers to understand and use them. Simplify Maintenance: By isolating modules, we can update and maintain them independently, reducing the risk of breaking changes affecting the entire app. Promote Reusability: Well-defined modules can be reused across different projects, promoting a modular and efficient development approach. By embracing Webpack 5 Module Federation and breaking down our app into distinct microfrontends, we aim to create a more robust, scalable, and maintainable architecture. This approach not only benefits our development process but also enhances the overall user experience by ensuring that each component is well-crafted and easily accessible. Redundancy and Reliability In the past, we have encountered difficulties when deploying our app to AWS due to various technical issues. Given that our app functions as a self-hosted static application, we have started exploring alternative hosting options, such as GitHub Pages. You can view our deployment on GitHub Pages here: https://positive-intentions.github.io/chat. GitHub Pages Deployment Our microfrontend architecture allows us to deploy each module independently. This capability has enabled us to host copies of the app on GitHub Pages for each repository. While this approach is unconventional and can lead to redundant copies of the app, we believe it is a valuable exercise in exploring module federation redundancy. Accessibility: Hosting on GitHub Pages makes the app easily accessible to users and developers. Simplicity: GitHub Pages offers a straightforward deployment process, reducing the complexity often associated with other hosting solutions. Cost-Effective: GitHub Pages is free, making it an economical choice for hosting static sites. Redundancy and Interoperability We aim to make our app interoperable across different hosting sources. By leveraging Webpack 5 Module Federation, we can ensure that the app works seamlessly whether it is served from AWS or GitHub Pages. This redundancy enhances the app’s reliability and availability. Module Federation Redundancy: We are investigating ways to make modules interoperable between different sources, ensuring that the app remains functional even if one source becomes unavailable. Interoperable Deployment: Our goal is to allow the app to fetch and integrate modules from both AWS and GitHub Pages dynamically. https://preview.redd.it/m1nbx4nloc1d1.png?width=1100&format=png&auto=webp&s=b7e708e530bece6bcbd492b2699755065b783eb0 Future Plans To further enhance our deployment strategy, we plan to use a infrastructure as code tool, to deploy the app across multiple cloud service providers. This approach will increase the resilience of our deployment, ensuring the app remains online and functional even if one provider experiences downtime. Multi-Cloud Deployment: We can deploy the app to various cloud service providers, including AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. This will distribute the app’s load and reduce the risk of a single point of failure. Scalability: This will enable us to scale the app easily across different providers, ensuring it can handle increased traffic without performance issues. Cost Management: Static file hosting is relatively a cheap option for hosting a webapp, we can optimize costs and ensure that the app remains affordable to maintain. By exploring these new hosting options and implementing a robust deployment strategy, we aim to make our decentralized chat app more resilient, scalable, and cost-effective. Our efforts in redundancy and interoperability will ensure that the app continues to function seamlessly, providing a reliable user experience regardless of the hosting source. Multi-Device Architecture As our app continues to develop, we are excited to introduce the concept of a decentralized profile that can be shared across multiple devices. This feature is designed for individuals who want to use the same profile on all their devices, providing a seamless and integrated multi-platform chat experience, much like any modern chat application. Decentralized Profile A decentralized profile allows users to maintain a consistent identity and settings across different devices. This means that whether you are using a smartphone, tablet, or desktop, your profile can remain synchronized and up-to-date. Profile Synchronization: Users can access their chat history, contacts, and settings on any device by synchronizing their decentralized profile. Data Consistency: Changes made on one device are automatically reflected on others, ensuring a consistent experience. Multi-Platform Chat Experience Implementing a decentralized profile enables us to offer a robust multi-platform chat experience. Users can switch between devices without losing their chat continuity or settings, enhancing the overall user experience. Convenience: Users can start a conversation on one device and continue it on another without any interruptions. Flexibility: The app adapts to various devices, providing a user-friendly interface and experience on each platform. https://preview.redd.it/8e2i3rrooc1d1.png?width=1100&format=png&auto=webp&s=a034fe514dbd6aa889de2da16caea828f7833e38 Decentralized File Storage In addition to profile synchronization, we are exploring the potential of decentralized file storage. This feature would allow users to move large files between devices quickly, easily and securely. Cross-Device Sharing: Users can share files between their devices effortlessly, whether they are transferring a document from their laptop to their phone or vice versa. Collaborative Work: Teams can collaborate more effectively by sharing encrypted files directly through the app, regardless of the devices they are using. By introducing a decentralized profile and exploring decentralized file storage, we aim to enhance our app’s functionality and user experience. These features will provide users with the convenience and flexibility expected from a modern chat application while maintaining the principles of decentralization and security. Decentralized Peer Discovery Decentralized peer discovery is a critical component of our app’s architecture. By leveraging innovative technologies such as QR codes, NFC, and BLE, we facilitate seamless connections between peers without relying on a central authority. QR Codes QR codes provide a straightforward method for establishing peer connections. Users can generate a QR code that contains their connection details, which other users can scan to initiate a peer-to-peer connection. https://preview.redd.it/20jk09qqoc1d1.png?width=793&format=png&auto=webp&s=11d72cbae68ac953f955d4cb87ce4e41cf877341 Ease of Use: Users can quickly and easily share connection details. Security: QR codes can be generated dynamically, reducing the risk of interception. NFC (Near Field Communication) NFC allows devices to establish connections simply by being in close proximity. This technology is particularly useful for quick and secure peer discovery. Speed: Connections are established almost instantly. Convenience: Users can connect devices by simply bringing them close together, making it ideal for spontaneous interactions. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) BLE enables devices to discover and communicate with each other over short distances with minimal power consumption. This makes it a suitable option for maintaining constant peer-to-peer connections. Energy Efficiency: BLE conserves battery life, making it ideal for mobile devices. Range: BLE provides a reliable connection over a short range, perfect for personal or localized networking. Combining Technologies for Enhanced Discovery By integrating QR codes, NFC, and BLE, we create a robust and versatile peer discovery mechanism. Users can choose the most convenient method for their situation, ensuring that connections are both seamless and secure. Hybrid Approach: Users can combine different methods for an optimal connection experience. For instance, initial discovery via QR code followed by connection via BLE for sustained communication. Adaptability: The app adapts to the available technologies on the user’s device, providing the best possible peer discovery experience. These innovative approaches to peer discovery, coupled with our decentralized microfrontend architecture, form the backbone of our commitment to enhancing decentralization, scalability, and user experience. By continually exploring and implementing cutting-edge technologies, we ensure our app remains at the forefront of decentralized communication solutions These sections outline the key aspects of our decentralized microfrontend architecture and provide a roadmap for our ongoing and future efforts to enhance decentralization, scalability, and user experience. Conclusion Our journey towards building a decentralized chat application has been driven by a desire to push the boundaries of what it means for an app to be truly self-hosted and independent of central servers. By leveraging modern web technologies such as Progressive Web Apps, IndexedDB, WebRTC, and Webpack 5 Module Federation, we have created a robust and scalable architecture that emphasizes privacy, security, and user empowerment. 2024.05.19 11:17 sparklinggambino UPDATE: Driving without insurance, because my insurance company failed to tell me my policy wouldn’t be renewed, after telling me it would auto renew
hi everyone! here’s the link to the OG post (
https://www.reddit.com/LegalAdviceUK/s/rJKAuDrTej) incase you missed it. It’s been over a year now, i wish i had a bit more of an update but this is all.
the day after i presented all my “evidence” to the station & the officer sent my copies off with the ticket issued on the night, i sent an email to the camera & tickets office with a timeline of what happened and all of the paperwork. someone replied and said once they receive the ticket in office they will review. a week later, the insurance company finally sent me an indemnity letter, the conversations i had with them were honestly like pulling teeth - will never deal with them again, but i got it, sent it straight over, same stock reply “sure once we get the ticket in office…” (you get it).
3 weeks later im emailing again - “any update?” because i did NOT want this coming back on me or them claiming they sent me post and i didn’t respond etc etc. still the same. 6 weeks later, still the same.
and a whole year later still the same! no one has responded to me, no mail, no email reply, no points on my licence, nothing.
i suppose i do have one question - how much time before they can’t charge me with it anymore? like for example can they send me a letter in 2 years time stating they found i was liable?
also don’t you think it’s a bit cheeky how shit they can make you feel about these kind of situations and then just leave you in the lurch? i don’t expect a sorry, but some peace of mind would be nice!

2024.05.19 11:03 Objective-Teach-9371 Was I put under PIP unfairly?
Hey there, I am a dog handler who took some time off (edit: just Thursday and Friday) to consider my poor mental health. At 4:50PM on Friday I was given notice of a Performance Improvement Plan this Wednesday. I will be reviewed Monday and Tuesday with the possibility of the problems that were raised in the notice changing before the meeting on Wednesday.
The problems laid out in the proposal are extremely vague and to do with general dog control and a hoarding mentality (focusing too much on the dogs under my direct care instead of the ones under the care of other coworkers). I wasn't aware these were areas that I was failing in. Nowhere is there any mention of specific instances of my failures in any issue raised.
The business owner is the one carrying out this process, they are not on site day-to-day (maybe once every couple of months). I didn't know my day-to-day manager had these issues with my performance. Though I know the dogs aren't always obedient and in the employee documentation is explained that dogs should listen to a multitude of commands and never disobey, I feel as if this is unrealistic. I look after 10-16 different dogs each day (I pick and drop them off), as well as the 20-30 other dogs (and 2 people doing the same job I am). Some dogs come consistently 2-3 times a week, others are once a week or every other week. I am not trained as a dog trainer and my role is a "handler", meaning the dogs should come already trained.
I realize that I am more nervous around the owner, there has been a lot of problem with dogs being too noisy (a specific person/s relating to a nearby retirement home complained to the point of the council coming in and monitoring us, we passed an official inspection but it's become a hot-button issue). The owner expects the dogs to not bark at all which the manager and my coworkers don't even attempt when the owner is not around as it's not feasible (the manager cannot stand up for us though).
Another problem that is laid out is the lack of me being an "Alpha". I'm not sure how well versed you are with contemporary dog training so I apologize, but being an Alpha is widely considered an outdated way of treating dogs based on incorrect beliefs about packs of wolves(as well as incorrect understanding of what "dominance" means when it comes to dogs). As wikipedia mentions all professional dogs are considered to use positive reinforcement, it's what the best practices of the MPI for dog handling recommends, the SPCA and the Association for Dog Professional Trainers of New Zealand (PIP mentions that dog treats cannot be used, which is the most popular accepted form of behavioral management).
My owner has no certifications that I know of, and occasionally hires a "dog sage" (has no certifications, possibly worked as a vet nurse, or at least around them at one point) and they both consider being an Alpha as okay (and enjoy "dominating" dogs). They They have both encouraged me to physically hurt the animals to get them to "submit" this includes pinching ears, squeezing paws to the point of it being "uncomfortable" for the dogs, as well as kneeing dogs when they jump up.
I assume this is a point of contention as their public documents emphasizes that they are not trainers (nor anybody that works here) and that no physical discipline techniques will be used with handling. However are internal employee documents list the methods I mentioned before, and I have been encouraged to do this to train the dogs. (There is a mention in the employee documents that mention a handler can use the methods they think is best, which, along with my manager agreeing with my methods is probably why I've managed to work here for a couple of years). I've mentioned my discomfort at these techniques but it is seen as cowardice or over-empathy instead of what I was learned to do during my course certification and have read about since.
I've been nervous around my boss ever since the first meeting when they visited me and repeatability shouted at me to raise my voice at a dog (even though the internal documents say that a raised voice should not be used). They sent an email to everybody later on saying sorry for being harsh as they were experiencing family problems.
All the public facing documents talk about encouraging dogs to be social and have fun and grow with them but I'm constantly pressured to keep them quiet, most toys were removed to lower their excitability and I just feel like I'm a prison guard. I mentioned poor mental health and I am looking into getting a GP and treated for a worsened anxious/depressive state (wanted to with my time off but this whole thing was a big surprise, I realize PIP is meant to be helpful but a lot of online say I'm about to be fired which is pretty scary).
I have a good relationship with my day-to-day manager but I'm not sure they'll stand up for me. (maybe they do agree with the owner and their input is exactly how the owner has got their information, something I hope to find out tomorrow and will greatly change my circumstances).
My questions are:
- Can I ask for the PIP parts to be more specific? I mean how is "knowing dog behavior" and "being an alpha" supposed to be defended? There were no specific instances where I have failed anything mentioned in the any of these documents. I realise a PIP should be more exact but how realistic is that, aren't a lot of job responsibilities vague?
- If the problems laid out are just from my owners sparse observations, is that okay?
- Part of the training suggested is with the owner to improve my ability to control dogs, I don't think I'll feel comfortable around them enough to improve. and I know I definitely won't agree with some of their techniques, can I ask for them to pay for an accredited trainer?
- Should I bring up my concerns about the problems they've laid out before the meeting, or just wait until them?
- Edited: Do the problems raised for PIP have to effect me uniquely? Some of the problems expressed are ones that everybody at my workplace has trouble with.
- If this situation doesn't go well I'm quite worried about what I'll do, I understand WINZ standown is 13 weeks for quitting or being dismissed. Can this be reduced for my situation? I don't have any savings to last weeks without a wage. I hope I've misjudged the situation and I will get a "good" PIP, I'm just really worried right now.
I apologise for the length of my post, feel free to ask any questions.

2024.05.19 10:52 jennithomas321 On-Page vs. Off-Page SEO: Different but Equally Important
What’s the Difference Between On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO?
On-page SEO focuses on optimizing parts of your website that are within your control, while off-page SEO focuses on increasing the authority of your domain through content creation and earning backlinks from other websites. To further understand the difference between the two, you have to understand, at a basic level, how search engine algorithms work. Let’s break it down.
There are two main buckets that
search engines (SEO) look at when evaluating your site compared to other sites on the web.
- On-page SEO looks at what your site (or your page) is about
- Off-page SEO looks at how authoritative and popular your site is
On-Page vs. Off-Page SEO: What’s the Difference?
Put simply,
what you rank for is largely determined by on-page factors, while
how high you rank in the search results is largely determined by off-page factors.
How Does Each Type of SEO Affect Your Rankings?
What is On-Page SEO?
On-page SEO (also known as “on-site” SEO) is the act of optimizing different parts of your website that affect your search engine rankings.
Where your website appears in search engine results pages is determined by a number of ranking factors including site accessibility, page speed, optimized content, keywords, title tags, etc. On-page SEO is about optimizing the stuff that you have control over and can change on your own website.
On-page SEO checklist:
How do you make sure your on-page SEO tactics are up to snuff? Here is a helpful checklist for on-site optimizations that can help curate your strategy.
Title Tags
Put your targeted keywords in the title tag of each page on your site. There are
many best practices that go into writing an effective title tag.
- Limit your title tags to 55-60 characters (including spaces)
- Push the keyword closer to the beginning of the title (ONLY if it sounds natural)
- Don’t stuff your keywords
- Include brand at the end of the title tag, separated by a pipe bar () Example: “Chicago SEO Digital Third Coast”
Headings (H1)
Headings are usually the largest words on the page, and for that reason, search engines give them a little more weight than your other page copy. It is a good idea to work your target keywords into the headings of each web page but make sure you accurately reflect your page’s great content.
Make sure your H1s limited to one per page, all other headers are H2 or H3
URL structure
Put keywords into your URLs if possible. However,
do not go changing all of your current URLs just so they have keywords in them. You shouldn’t change old URLs unless you plan on
redirecting your old ones to your new ones. Consult a professional before doing this.
- Label your directories and folders in a way that makes sense for users
- Don’t repeat keywords in your URL more than once. Keywords are helpful, but overdoing it effects user experience. Example: /best-socks-comparison-best-socks-best-socks?
- Keep URLs as short as possible
Alt text for images
Any content management system should allow you to add something called “alt text” to all images on your website. This text isn’t visible to the average visitor – alt text is in fact used by screen reader software to help blind internet users understand the content of your images. Search engines crawl images in a similar way, so inserting some relevant keywords while accurately describing the image will help search engines understand your page’s content.
Writing an alt attribute for each image keeps your website in compliance with WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). Keep the following things in mind when writing alt text:
- Thoroughly describe the image in 8-10 words
- Include your targeted keyword where it sounds most natural
- Include, if relevant, a geo-locator (e.g., Chicago)
Fast-loading pages, or page load speed
Google wants to help its users find what they’re looking for as quickly as possible to provide the best user experience. Therefore,
optimizing your pages to load faster helps your site rank higher in the search results.
Google has a tool called PageSpeed Insights that will analyze your site on both mobile and desktop. and then suggest tips to optimize page speed. There are also several quick fixes to eliminate whatever is bogging your site down and slowing your page load time. Key site speed factors to consider:
- Minimizing HTTP requests
- Making sure server response time is <200ms
- Setting browser caching to at least a week or longer
- Enabling Gzip compression
- Having image sizes under 100kb (.jpg, .png, .gif)
- Placing all CSS in an external style sheet
- Minifying all JS, CSS and HTML
- Prioritizing above the fold content loading
Mobile Friendliness
In recent years, Google has prioritized mobile page loading speed as a key ranking metric.
How do you know if your website is mobile-friendly? Unfortunately,
Google recently dropped support for some free public tools that helped. However, you can now use Google Search Console to analyze this type of information. Specifically, the Core Web Vitals report can help you identify if your mobile pages are loading slower than they should be.
Page Content
The content on your pages needs to be
useful to people. If they search for something too specific to find your page, they need to be able to find what they’re looking for. It needs to be easy to read and provide value to the end user. Google
has various ways to measure if your content is useful.
- Aim for at least 500 words of copy. Although there is no exact formula for how many words a page should have, Google seems to prefer when a page has a lot of relevant and helpful content surrounding your topic.
- Copy must be unique to each page, not duplicated from other pages on your site, and should directly address your visitors’ search queries
- Push the keyword closer to the beginning of the title, but ONLY if it sounds natural
Internal Linking
Linking internally to other pages on your website is useful to visitors and it is also useful to search engines. Here’s an internal link to another blog post on our site that talks more about internal linking. Very meta.
When adding internal links, make sure to have relevant anchor text. Anchor text is the clickable text in a hyperlink (usually indicated by blue font color and underline). To optimize your anchor text, make sure the selected word or phrase is relevant to the page you’re linking to.
On-page SEO ensures that your site can be read by both potential customers and search engine robots. With good on-page SEO, search engines can easily index your web pages, understand what your site is about, and easily navigate the structure and content of your website, thus ranking your site accordingly. As a best practice, make sure your page content includes 1-3 relevant internal links.
Schema Markup
Adding structured data helps Google better understand the content of a page. Google also uses certain types of structured data to display “rich results” in SERPs such as a recipe with start ratings or step-by-step instructions with an image carousel. These rich results often appear at or near the top of SERPs and generally have higher click-through-rates than normal organic listings.
Google prefers structured data to use
schema.org vocabulary, and recommends using JSON-LD format. They also provide a handy
Rich Results Test tool to check your code. While there are a variety of ways to add structured data to your website (plugins, Google Tag Manager, etc.), it’s always best to get a professional involved if you’re not comfortable writing code.
Check out Google’s guide to structured data and rich results here. Social Tags
Having your content shared on social tells Google that people find your content relevant, helpful and reputable. Not every page on your site is share-worthy, but you can optimize the pages that are with these tips:
- Make sure you have Open Graph tags and Twitter Cards installed
- Make it easy with “tweet this quote” links, or social share buttons for each post
Core Web Vitals
User experience is key to a website’s long-term success. In spring 2020,
Google unveiled Core Web Vitals, a common set of signals that they deem “critical” to all users’ web experiences.
The purpose of these signals is to quantify the user experience with a website, from page visual stability and load time, to interactive experiences.
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) – measures perceived page loading speed and marks the point at which the majority of the page content has downloaded.
- First Input Delay – quantifies user experience of a user’s initial engagement with a page.
- Cumulative Layout Shift – quantifies the amount of layout shift on visible page content and measures visual stability of a page. It’s usually causes by images without dimensions, dynamically injected content, web fonts causing FOIT/FOUT, and other embeds added without dimensions.
To check your LCP score, access your Google PageSpeed Insights and make sure your page hits LCP within 2.5 seconds. To accomplish this, remove unnecessary third-party scripts that may be running, upgrading your web host, activating “lazy loading” so page elements load only as users scroll down the page, and remove any large page elements that may be slowing it down.
One of the simplest ways to optimize cumulative layout shift is to add height and width dimensions to each new site element. Also, avoid adding new content above existing content on a page (unless responding to user interaction).
Page Experience
Google is working on a new ranking signal (likely to come out in 2024) that prioritizes websites with positive user experiences.
The ‘page experience signal’ will consist of Core Web Vitals, plus mobile-friendliness, safe-browsing, HTTPS security, and intrusive interstitial guidelines.
According to
Google, “optimizing for these factors makes the web more delightful for users across all web browsers and surfaces, and helps sites evolve towards user expectations on mobile. We believe this will contribute to business success on the web as users grow more engaged and can transact with less friction.”
What is Off-Page SEO?
Off-page SEO focuses on increasing the authority of your domain through the act of getting links from other websites.
A good analogy for how authority works is this. If you have a bathtub with rubber duckies in it (the ducks are your pages), and you start filling the tub with water (links), your duckies are all going to rise to the top.
This is how a site like Wikipedia ranks for pretty much everything under the sun. It has so much water in its bathtub that if you throw another rubber duck in it, it’s going to float to the top without any other effort.
There’s a score called “Domain Authority” that calculates how authoritative your website is compared to other sites. You can type your domain name
into here to see your score.
How to optimize for off-page SEO
There are several factors that influence your off-page SEO rankings. While each one is tackled with different strategies, they share an overarching goal of building the trust and reputation of your website from the outside.
- Inbound links
- Social media marketing
- Guest blogging and guest posting
- Unlinked brand mentions
- Influencer marketing
The biggest off-page SEO factor is the number and quality of backlinks to your website. Some examples of ways you can build links to your website are:
- Creating awesome content that people want to link to because it is valuable. For example, this super helpful blog post about how to improve about us pages. The post provides a ton of actionable recommendations. People tend to link to content that is useful. Creating an online tool for your industry is another powerful content type. Things like online calculators tend to get the most backlinks out of all content types because they help people accomplish a goal.
- Social media shares of your content that ultimately generate links.
- Outreach e-mails to influencers in your industry that ultimately link to you.
- Guest blogging on sites related to yours. These guest posts will have links back to your site.
While link quantity is still important, content creators and SEO professionals are realizing that link quality is now more important than link quantity. As such, creating shareable content is the first step to earning valuable links and improving your off-page SEO.
How many links do you need for good off-page SEO? That is a tough question and it’s going to be based on the domain authority of your competitors, as you want to make sure you’re playing in the same sandbox.
SEOs also used to believe that buying links was a valid way of link building; however, Google will now penalize you for buying links in an attempt to manipulate page rank. You can also be penalized for submitting your links to link directories whose sole purpose is to increase your domain authority. Again, quality wins out over quantity when it comes to link building.
Is On-Page or Off-Page SEO More Important?
It’s not about choosing between on and off-page SEO, that would be like having to choose between a foundation or a roof for your house. On-page and off-page SEO work together to improve your search engine rankings in a complementary fashion.
However, SEOs generally advise getting your on-page SEO ducks in a row before focusing too much on off-page SEO.
Just like building a house, you want to set the foundation first before building the rest of the house. Like a foundation, you may need to come back and do some maintenance to your on-page SEO from time to time. Balancing the two will help make your website “bilingual” so that your users can understand it as well as the search engine robots- and that’s how your rankings start to improve.

2024.05.19 10:46 TightAsF_ck Beware OnThatAss
So... OnThatAss are a widely considered to be a company from hell. They are on almost all cashback and get-paid-to sites. But they have tricky terms and conditions that are designed to ensure you stay subscribed for at least one month after you cancel (whether that's within the free trial or after).
What's worse, many people have cancelled only to be sent threatening emails about debt collectors. Stuff this company.
I'm going to see if I can beat them with minimal pain.
I'm signing up to them to unlock something else on a get-paid-to site. The Strategy
This seems ridiculous, but if you read the details below, you will see why this is needed.
To avoid falling into their trap, here’s what I plan to do: 1.
Sign up towards the end of the month (today, and with more than 7 days to spare before next month). 2.
Receive boxers before the end of the month. 3.
Cancel before the end of the month. Sending a strongly worded email confirming my cancellation.
Did it work?
Do not attempt this. I will update here if it actually works without them sending threatening emails...
Why?!
The Promise
- On many cashback and get-paid-to sites, there's an enticing offer:
- "Get paid £XX for trying out OnThatAss."
- For example, Cashback.co.uk offers: "Grab your first pair of On That Ass boxers for FREE! (get paid £3)."
The Reality
- Overpriced Boxers. tk maxx for the win here.
- Difficult Cancellation: When trying to cancel, OnThatAss makes it tough, often sending a second pair and charging £11.99 for them.
The Confusing Terms
- "Try now for free for 14 days!" - but it’s actually a monthly subscription.
- "Your free boxer short will be in your mailbox within 7 working days!"
- "You will always receive your monthly delivery between the 17th and 23rd of the month."
- "After receiving your boxer shorts, you can cancel your subscription immediately within the first 14 days. After your first 14 days, we apply a month's notice period. If you cancel before the 20th of the month, there will be one payment and one delivery."
I think the last point is the kicker that they use to trap people in. Depending on when people sign up, the free trial period and the subsequent cancellation period might overlap with the beginning of the next billing cycle. Cancellation Email
Subject: Subscription Cancellation Notice
Dear OnThatAss Team,
I hear you make it tricky for people to cancel. Nevertheless, I am writing to cancel my subscription to your boxer shorts service. My subscription details are as follows:
- Name: XXX
- Registration Date: 19/05/2023
- Date free boxer shorts were received: XXX
- End of 14 day reflection period: XXX
As per your terms and conditions, I am cancelling within the 14-day trial period, and specifically before a new month starts to avoid any possibility that you mistakenly include my subscription in your next billing cycle.
Please confirm my cancellation and ensure that no charges are applied to my account. All future deliveries from OnThatAss will be rejected, and I have also cancelled my payment instruction.
Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely,

2024.05.19 10:26 NextDoorCyborg Female crabs UK
So, as you may see from my previous posts, the 1 male 2 female rainbow crabs I had ordered turned out to be three males. Sadly, one of them died, due to "natural" causes, not fighting, as far as I can tell. The remaining two seem to get along well enough, probably because the paludarium is big enough for them to just let each other be.
Still, I am now left with two males and no females, which I'm pretty sure drastically reduces the chances of them breeding. I did find a site where I could order females specifically, and captive bred too! So I did. As it turns out, it was too good to be true and the shop just sent me an email explaining how they don't breed vampire crabs any more since people didn't seem to be willing to pay the higher price for ethically sourced crabs.
This brings me to my question: Where would I get female vampire crabs in the UK, preferrably captive bred? Just ordering at one of the other shops and hoping they can and do accommodate the request for females can't be the only solution here. I don't think I could deal with the ethical implications, what if I get another batch of males? Are there by any chance any British hobbyists in this subreddit that have a couple of female rainbow vamps to spare?

2024.05.19 10:09 TryDrugs Am I being a little *b-word* or should I suck it up and keep going to this doctor?
tl;dr: Dr's office never told me insurance wasn't covering visits and now I owe them a lot.
So about a year ago during a visit for some random thing I decided to ask my doctor to be tested for ADHD. They tried but I could never get an appointment anywhere, so they decided to do it themselves. When I showed up for the visits I was just asked for my normal $30 copay. Then after like 6 or so months I was changing jobs. Let them know I wouldn't see them for a few months while I wait to get on the new insurance. Fast forward a couple months and I find a letter in the mail saying I owe them almost 2K because they insurance didn't pay a dime towards the ADHD related visits!? AND it was the THIRD notice?
So right now I'm just mad and and contemplating just not paying. What are they gonna do? Sent it to collections who will try to call me and get ignored? So what not like my credit is good for anything when a house costs 500k...
But on the other hand, how much did you spend to get diagnosed and find the right meds? Am I being stupid because most people end up paying way more?

2024.05.19 09:49 AdvancedApartment705 AITA for wanting to act like my daughter dad never showed up?
TLDR: MY daughters dad showed up 2 years ago and has been inconsistent at best in these two years. AITA for wanting to block him and proceed as if he never contacted us?
AITA
This is gonna be probably pretty long and all over the place but I'll try and keep it straight and to the point.
So I have a daughter. She is 11 almost 12. For the first 9+ years of her life her dad had not been involved. ( She was a fortune product of a one night stand) When he showed up almost two years ago it was with some fabricated story that a child support case worker alienated him and threatened him with harassment if he pursued a relationship with his daughter. I did try to reach out a couple times when she was younger trying to encourage a relationship between them and all attempts went ignored. He says this is because he was afraid I was setting him up. Well up until this past December I took him at his word. He was semi involved until that point. In December he met a woman and all contact stopped minus a few check ins and multiple inappropriate messages to me considering he was in a relationship. Each time this happened I would lay a boundary. During one of these contacts he promised he'd send his child support and $100 for Christmas/Birthday gift for her. That did not happen. He instead sent me a dirty video saying he "hoped that made up for it" 🤮🤮🤮 at this point I lost my iiisssshhhhh on him and told him essentially he was in a relationship and needed to knock it off. I didn't want to see that and it was disrespectful to me and his partner.
He moved in with this partner within a month of meeting her. Red flag right?
Before he met her I was trying to help him find an apartment locally as he lives 200 miles away. I absolutely advocated for him to have a relationship with his daughter from the second he showed up because I've never been the type to keep my children from their father unless it was for good reason. He was supposed to get her a phone and pay for it so they could maintain contact. Never happened. I supplied the phone and the service and it was silent.
After he had sent me that video I had put him on restricted on FB so I didn't get any messages from him. I finally get a call from him on Valentine's day apologizing for his behavior and letting me know he was sending some child support that day.
Then at some point in March he reaches out again saying he was no longer with this girl and he was sorry for his absence and he'd do better. The following week our daughter's phone caught fire and I let him know (not that he was contacting her anyways). The next day he said his cousin had gifted him a phone and he wanted to send it to our daughter. Cool. Let's do it. Then he texts a few days later saying he would be in a town 45 miles south of me and could I meet him and said girlfriend to receive the phone and bring our daughter so he could see her. (At this point the last I knew him and chick had broken up). I said no thanks you can drop it in the mail and I would not be bringing our daughter to meet him with the on again off again girlfriend. I found that extremely disrespectful as he had stopped contact with our daughter when he met this woman and I did not feel comfortable bringing my daughter to meet her or even really dealing with her myself. They obviously have an unstable relationship. He called me petty, we had som choice words and again I didn't hear from him.
Two days ago our daughter was admitted to a psychiatric facility after I found some very concerning diary entries by my daughter talking about Una living herself.
Since coming into our lives my daughter has turned into a mean spirited person. She will fat shame her brothers, hit and push her you get siblings and is just kind of generally abusive to everyone around her. She's told me multiple times she's angry at him and very hurt.
Anyways, I figured he ought to know she's being admitted as this is pretty serious. His response was "we are trying to figure a way up there". As in him and the girlfriend were going to come up while our child was in crisis. I went off again. Telling him again he has chosen this woman over our daughter and how dare he think it's appropriate to bring this woman up here while outr daughter is in crisis. I told him it is up to our daughter if they are involved and just showing up ESPECIALLY with the person she feels (justifyibly so) that he chose over her while she's in crisis. He come back with he has no idea why I'm bringing it back to him and the girlfriend when we should be focusing on getting our daughter better. My stance is, he brought it up. He asked for eventually for us all to be able to be cool and again he implied he was going to try and bring her up here to visit our daughter in the hospital. I laid a boundary. And some how I am the one not focusing on our daughter right now.
This was yesterday and I have not heard one word from him. He has not inquired as to how our daughter is, what facility she is at, how he can contact her. Nothing. I am so irate at this point I am seeing red.
AITA for being so angry at him? In my state abandonment is after 6 months. He was gone for 9 years. He has been inconsistent at best especially the last 6 months or so. Would I be justified in just blocking him and continuing on with our life like he never showed up?

2024.05.19 09:36 hungryconsultant I've had it with Dreamhost - best VPS alternative that's the easiest to migrate to?
- What is your monthly budget? All in all, paying about $150/mo which isn't worth it for what I'm actually using. That being said, if I need to pay more, I can.
- Where are you/your users located? Worldwide
- What kind of site are you hosting (Wordpress, phpBB, custom software, etc) or what is your use case? Custom - PHP. Mostly Landing Pages, nothing complicated, no databases.
- Do you have a monthly traffic volume? Estimates are ok. No, relatively high volume
- If you’re looking at VPSes: Do you have experience administrating linux servers and infrastructure? Nope, I've managed to handle some basic SSH stuff. I need managed hosting where most of the admin is done by support.
- Did you read the sidebacheck out the hosts listed there? I've personally vetted these companies and their services are a good fit for 99% of people.
Yes, but they seem small.
I'm looking for a big company with 24/7 support, where if there's a problem you can google it and see how someone else solved it.
Important - need it to be easy to migrate about 30 domains, with SSL. No databases. No wordpress. PHP 8.1.
Important - down time as close as possible to zero, I have paid traffic sent to most domains, so downtime means losing money.

2024.05.19 09:31 Shoddy-Taste941 mercari shipping issues
i’ve recently sold a few items on mercari and i’ve never had issues with shipping especially shipping instate. 2/2 sold are stuck in transit with one literally being in the same state as me and the other heading to washington but stuck at my local metro sorting center … i’m really worried because both packages were expensive and i’m scared to lose my pay as well as the buyer not getting their items and maybe even have mercari charge me even though im losing a huge amount of money too if it’s lost … im just really worried and i’ve sold 2 more things that im really reluctant to send out because of this issue with mercari labels it seems. i also sell on instagram and i sent out a package to jersey where i bought the label on pirateship and the package delivered just fine unlike my problem packages with mercari… if anyone knows what mercari does with lost mail and if im protected please let me know

I purchased a 1000$ Henry big boy, it was the wrong one so I sent customer support an email asking them to cancel it, and bought the correct one right after. So in total I’ve spent about 2k
However I saw on their site literally right after “Cancellations: Cancellations are not permitted once an order has been placed.”
