Had one heck of a busy spring, ready to enjoy the summer and get back to writing these fun pitches. A couple years back, I pitched the ideal setting for a modern adaptation of DC Comics. A live-action shared universe on Essentially, imagine if the CWverse and other live-action TV series were to be hypothetically replaced by one unified vision, which broadcasted on one network. In this case, HBO Max. (Which probably means imagining Max launched a few years earlier, somewhere around 2016 or 2017) Having dived into two of DC's iconic Trinity (Superman and Wonder Woman), it's time to round them out with the Dark Knight himself. Batman's one heck of a juggernaut isn't he? I can't think of a medium that hasn't covered this hero. There's some definite standouts for sure, like the beloved animated series of the 90s and the masterpiece that was Christopher Nolan's trilogy. And yet, so much of what we've gotten in live-action has just barely scratched the surface. That's where this idea comes in. Taking the story of Batman, and adapting its sheer volume and scope on a platform big enough to cover it. First airing in 2020, in some world other than this one, it's... BATMAN An HBO Max original series. **** Premise Picture, if you will, a series which picks up well into this hypothetical "Maxverse" I've laid out the past couple of years. Batman is a superhero family drama spanning several years, from 2014 to 2018 in-universe. It covers a veteran Batman, and his alliance of costumed heroes, as they face several terrifying threats to their home of Gotham City. Major inspirations for this series include runs by-
As with the rest of the stories in the Maxverse, this Batman series is slapped with a TV-MA rating. Given the subject matters often featured in Batman comics, this particular TV-MA would be earned and then some. No sanitizing or watering down to be found here, this show would be dark. Covered in three seasons, the major arcs are 1: The personal journey of Bruce Wayne as Batman. 2: Batman's several proteges doing their best to live up to his example, while also making their own paths as heroes. 3: A slow uncovering of Gotham City's hidden history. 4: The looming question of what kind of life Bruce Wayne could live, without Batman. Setting Much like the Superman series of this universe dives into alternate history regarding its primary locale, so too does Batman. As Metropolis in this setting was born from what was once New York City, Gotham sprang from what used to be Jersey City. The two cities sit across the bay from each other, sister cities and yet almost complete opposites. Gotham is a city with one foot in the past, and another in the future. Visual and thematic inspirations for the setting could ideally draw from depictions both old-fashioned and modern. Gothic and futuristic. In many ways, Gotham could be as much a character as the lead cast themselves. Its mythology and mystery hangs heavy over the entire series, and the unraveling of its origins drives a considerable amount of the plot in Season 3. Other locations of note could include
Leading off the massive ensemble are the power couple that is Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle. AKA Batman and Catwoman. The actors I'd choose to portray them are well-known in geek circles. Whether they by Star Wars fans, or fans of various horrific works by Mike Flanagan. Sam Witwer Kate Siegel As Batman is a family drama, Bruce and Selina are the resident patriarch and matriarch respectively. Much like the character as featured in the DCEU, this Bruce Wayne has been in the game for a long time. In this case, twelve years. He's got a lot of scars to show for it, physical and mental, and while the Bat-family or his friends abroad in the Justice League keep him balanced, Bruce is starting to show the wear and tear of his long crusade. Selina, for her part, is a woman who's long since left her life as a criminal behind. Having come from a marginalized background, she has seen both the best and worst of Gotham and its people. More than fighting criminals, her mission is helping the poor and oppressed of her city and giving them a better life than the one she was born into. Background Story & Supporting Cast As the series has a lot of history behind it, one could expect various tie-in materials to expand on said history.

Let us start with the advert itself. Well, in form it is no different from the PiS adverts made by Kurski. Dramatic music, dramatic narration, dramatic frames, a few piles of skulls, a smiling Putin, Lukashenko and so on. It's obvious that the intention was to hammer the PiS = Russia equation into people's heads by appealing to the simplest of emotions, namely fear of a brutal superpower. Well, and it's a campaign ad, so of course the political opponent, i.e. PiS, is hit with a mace. Opinions differ. I am one of those who believe that this form will have the opposite effect to the one intended. In the safe electorate of PO it will probably be attractive. Everywhere else, it will cause embarrassment. As a result, many people will think that all this Russian influence is no real problem. Just another stage in the 20-year PO-PiS war. And I am not even talking about the so-called Jan Kowalski). This is exactly the tone in which professional pundits speak. It never ceases to amaze me, but what can I do, I have come to terms with the facts.
Well, it shouldn't be like that.
It has been argued that PiS has did a lot more and a lot worse over eight years. Yes, that is true. It has. And it would be nice if some pundits remembered that and didn't write silly things about how now, in May 2024, someone in Poland has called someone a traitor for the first time. Still, I guess we expected a more sophisticated rhetoric from the current government, didn't we? Because the problem of Russian influence is real and has been swept under the carpet as much as possible. And it needs to be dealt with in a calm, rational way.
That's right. Because apart from the form, there is also content in the ad. There is the statement that PiS "won the election with the help of illegally collected recordings from a Russian coal importer". Ok, here is the suggestion that PiS won ONLY because of this, which of course is not true. The 2015 victory, like any victory, was the result of many factors. Both the mistakes of the then PO-PSL coalition, the lies of PiS (Smolensk trutherism, refugee fearmongering, purported plans of privatising forests) and the poor result of the Left), which was missing a few tens of thousands of votes to enter the Sejm. Yes, this is manipulation, although we should also remember that we are talking about a 50-second election ad. Nevertheless, the base of this argument is as true as it can be. The recordings from the restaurant were commissioned by Marek Falenta, who imported Russian coal into Poland. Of course, this is manipulative, because to get a complete picture one would have to give the total volumes for eight years (and these are similar), while the sheer fact of the sudden increase in Russian coal imports after 2015 is undeniable.

Investigative journalists uncover some Russian influence on people close to the ruling party, some (let's be clear: some) media write about it, some of us are outraged, and then nothing happens. Little has been done about the Russian infiltration of circles opposing the government, see the Confederation, the anti-establisment and anti-vaccine movements and so on. The question 'where are the agencies' has even been asked so many times in pro-democratic social media that I could print these comments and cover my walls with them. Sorry, but that's how it was. I don't know if it gets any better, but that's the way it was.
Furthermore, 'they blocked investment in the expansion of the Polish army'.
If I were PO, I would stay away from this argument. Yes, PiS blocked the purchase of Caracal helicopters, and during Macierewicz's time as defense minister, the army sometimes even lacked uniforms. But all this is irrelevant today, given that after the Russian invasion of Ukraine the PiS government has expanded the Polish military a lot. This argument would make sense in 2019. In 2024 it does not. I note, however, that it was not as various PiS propagndists now portray it that they took power and immediately turned Poland into a military superpower. Finally, there is a passage in which Tusk compares the United Right) to the communist ruling party PZPR, which was once deciphered as 'paid traitors, lackeys of Russia' (Płatni zdrajcy, pachołki Rosji) . It is necessary to specify what is meant by 'pro-Russian party'. Is PiS a party that openly says that Russia is great? No. Has Kaczyński ever said that he copied his policies from Russia? No. Has he openly sided with Russia against the West? Again, no.
But was Kaczyński saying much the same thing about the West that the Kremlin has been saying for years? Yes, he was. Did Kaczyński create a political crisis in relations with almost all of Poland's Western allies as soon as he took power? Yes, he did. Did he introduce a series of anti-democratic laws in Poland that resembled Russian solutions, albeit in a softer version? Yes. Did Kaczyński plan and promote a war with the EU institutions that ultimately led to an unprecedented freeze of EU subsidies to Poland? Yes. Did he speak the language of polexit? Yes, he did. Does all this fit into Russia's strategy of dismantling Western structures? Absolutely.
So perhaps a more appropriate word than 'pro-Russian' would be 'Russifying'? Or a little longer: 'often strongly pursuing the Kremlin's geopolitical interests, sharing the Kremlin's view of Europe and European values, as the Kremlin is fiercely anti-Western, though likely to see itself as very anti-Russian'?
Earlier I mentioned the tape scandal and the involvement of the Russians in it. Although it seems unlikely, some pundits have managed to dismiss this fact because it does not fit in with the fact that PiS supplied arms to Ukraine. Well, they say, if PiS is supposedly so pro-Russian that the Russians helped it come to power, how do you explain the aid? Well, first of all, its proponents forget something as trivial as chronology. When the people linked to the Russians were setting up the background to the tape scandal, there was no war. It was 2010-2012, and the first wiretap was set up in the spring of 2013. There was no Euromaidan, no rebellion in Donbas, no annexation of Crimea. No one could have predicted how PiS would behave in 2022, because no one expected anything unusual to happen in 2022.
On the other hand, it was foreseeable that PiS would be an anti-Western party. That it would be a party that would confront the EU and its individual members. That PiS would say similar things about the EU as Russia, as PiS had been saying for years, and that it would ally with far-right circles that said so even more. That it would make a mess in the intelligence agencies, just like in 2006. And now let's look at the chronology. In 2013, the first bugs were set up. In June 2014, a scandal erupts, the media repeats all these vulgar quotes for months, which kills off PO's chances in the 2015 elections. In the autumn of 2015, PiS takes power and almost immediately: breaks into the NATO counterintelligence expert centre, abolishes the ABW field delegations, removes almost everyone from the agencies and fills them with newcomers with no experience (just like in 2006), makes Macierewicz the head of the Ministry of Defence with all his Russian connections, which Macierewicz immediately turns into a landing spot for people with Russian connections (such as Gaj and Kownacki), supports the pro-Russian think tank Ordo Iuris and immediately initiates an anti-Western civilisational turn. In this context, should we be so surprised that the Russians might have preferred the PiS in power?
All this happens six years before any tanks are handed over to Ukraine. I know, shocker, history didn't start in the spring of 2022.
Well, and now PO is releasing that ad. And some people say: oh dear, now PiS is going to accuse PO of being pro-Russian and the PO is going to accuse PiS of being pro-Russian, It's unbearable, so let's pretend it's not happening. I won't hide it, it's tiresome. But it would be nice if, as a species, a rational species, we could sometimes look beyond the political insults and focus on the evidence. And there really is a lot of it. The fact that the advert presents the case in this way does not change the fact that the situation is extremely serious.

Needless to say, this is a narrative very similar to the one the Kremlin has been using for years?
In short, what we need now is a serious debate about Russian and Belarusian influence in Poland. A debate that has been sorely lacking in recent years. This debate will inevitably become part of a political conflict. It will not be avoided because we are also talking about the influence of top politicians (not only from the PiS, by the way). All the more reason to be careful. The PO ad is a campaign ad, so it has a different convention. Nevertheless, in my opinion, it does the opposite. It reduces a real problem to a political trend. We can only hope that this is just a stupid idea of a few PR excecs and not part of a strategy that will last for years. The recent actions of the ABW and the fact that Donald Tusk has announced the appointment of a commission of experts to investigate these influences allow for some cautious optimism on this issue. Time will tell, of course.

Over the past 5-10 years I had occasionally replaced a dimmer switch here and there as well as adding quite a few plug-in switches. These were all either WeMo or TP-link Kasa and connect directly to my router. I got used to setting up timers and controlling these from my phone (in two different ways because only WeMo works with apple homekit) and that has been good enough and very cheap, but limited in scope.
Now that we are about to embark on a home renovation, I wanted to start taking lighting automation more serious, researched in this subreddit and elsewhere and settled on:
So far I am just playing around with a handful of Lutron dimmers and my existing Kasa and WeMo devices in the areas of the house that won't be touched by the renovation. Once the new rooms are done, plenty more Lutron devices, as well as other (cheaper) brands, motion sensors and blinds will be added.
Here is what I figured out already that may benefit others:

- Lutron hub (regular hub, not the pro)
- Pico remotes (scene controllers and standard dimmer remotes)
- Home assistant green with the zigbee dongle they sell along with it.
So far I am just playing around with a handful of Lutron dimmers and my existing Kasa and WeMo devices in the areas of the house that won't be touched by the renovation. Once the new rooms are done, plenty more Lutron devices, as well as other (cheaper) brands, motion sensors and blinds will be added.
Here is what I figured out already that may benefit others:
- Each button of my Pico remotes, regardless what remote it is - a scene controller or a regular dimmer remote, is exposed and fully accessible in home assistant. I can make any of the buttons trigger any device or scene. This is by far the most important and awesome feature for me since it will allow me to place Pico scene controllers wherever I want and they can control any and all devices through home assistant reliably. So awesome!
- As I did my research prior to setting this up, it sounded like this should all work, but I wasn't sure since I also saw several posts that this only works with the Pro hub and I also read about some limitations. I can confirm now that the Pico remotes do fully integrate with HA even when using the standard Lutron hub (so no need to get the Lutron Pro Hub). Each Pico button is simply available as a trigger in HA - so simple and SO good!
- Home assistant can also control all my old wifi only devices so I don’t even have to replace those. Any new device I buy will go through a dedicated network (Lutron, zigbee or maybe z-wave, thread, matter, whatever comes next), but my mesh routers (TP Link X60, hardwired to each other) are currently handling my wifi switches just fine, so why not keep and use the ones I already own.
- So the result is that a button from a pico scene controller can control and dim a combination of Lutron, WeMo and Kasa devices seamlessly and without much delay. It sometimes takes a second for the various switches and dimmers to do what they should and they do this in a bit of a sequence, not all at the same exact time, but I don’t mind that at all.
- And I can also turn on/off these scenes from my phone with the awesome integration between homekit and home assistant. I could of course do it from the dedicated home assistant app too, but homekit (apple home) is quicker to access on an iPhone and easier to use for the rest of my family. I have an apple TV that provides the homekit smarts and that works just fine.

Recently, I saw a post regarding how a WB/NBCU merger would be better than the Disney/Fox merger (and honestly, I agree! I'd take the WB/NBCU merger over Disney/Fox and ESPECIALLY Sony/Paramount the latter of which would likely get punched in the face by anti-trust laws since Sony owns Columbia/TriStaScreen Gems).
Anyhow, one question I had was "How would a Universal/Warner Bros. merger affect Cartoon Network and its sister services (Boomerang, Adult Swim, Cartoonito, Toonami, Discovery Family, and now, Universal Kids)?"

Anyhow, one question I had was "How would a Universal/Warner Bros. merger affect Cartoon Network and its sister services (Boomerang, Adult Swim, Cartoonito, Toonami, Discovery Family, and now, Universal Kids)?"
- Cartoon Network - For our main network, Cartoon Network should return to an all-ages animation network, focusing on primarily modern shows with (most) older shows being on MeTV Toons. Any older show not on MeTV Toons can air on Cartoon Network as a nighttime block replacing Adult Swim. I was also thinking that CN could strike a distribution deal with WildBrain to air
- Adult Swim - Due to NBCUniversal already having NBC Sports, Adult Swim can easily replace TruTV. Impractical Jokers could move to TBS or E! while Adult Swim could take over TruTV's channel slot to become an all-day service. Toonami can air either only on Saturdays (taking up the entire day) or daily as a nighttime block akin to Qubo Night Owl.
- Cartoonito - In this setting, Cartoonito would replace Boomerang due to the channel losing relevance with MeTV Toons and Cartoon Network's Latenight lineup. The Cartoonito shows on MAX and the TV-Y shows on Universal Kids could also move to Cartoonito as well.
- Discovery Family - For Discovery Family, I'd say sever ties with Hasbro and rebrand it back to Hub and make it teen-oriented as a transitional network from the 6-11 KidsCo and the 21+ Adult Swim. Hub would target a 12 to 20 audience and would focus it's programming lineup on primarily TV-PG and light TV-14 content such as Unicorns, My Adventures, The Loony Tunes Show, Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Regular Show, Bob's Burgers, Home Movies, ACME Night, Sitting Ducks, She-Ra, The Amazing World of Gumball, Total Drama, Mobile Suit Gundam, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Digimon, The Flintstones, Space Ghost, The Simpsons (provided they get the rights from Disney), The Powerpuff Girls (1998 and Z), and possibly Tamagotchi if Warnerversal is willing to produce and English dub of it. of course, with Discovery's involvement, a few live-action shows such Cake Boss and Too Cute, and a few Xploration Station shows (no HMPG/Litton shows as they're everywhere) as well as Superman and Lois, saving the show from The CW and it's Arrowverse-infested fingerprints) could also serve as additions to the Teen-focused network.
- Universal Kids - Universal Kids could become Warnerversal's primary kids channel becoming KidsCo. KidsCo could target as I mention, the 6-11 audience (compared to CNito's 2-5, Hub's 12-20 and AS's 21+). KidsCo would primarily base its lineup off of DreamWorks with Teen Titans Go! moving from Cartoon Network.
- Cartoon Network - All ages animation network.
- Adult Swim - Becomes 24/7 and focuses on Adult Animation.
- Cartoonito - Also becomes 24/7 (with MeTV Toons replacing Boomerang) and focuses on preschoolers.
- Hub (formerly Discovery Family) - Focusing on Teens and Young Adults.
- KidsCo (formerly Universal Kids) - Focusing on kids (6-11).

This was found on a DVD from Germany. It was a promotional copy that Universal Music international would send to its affiliated foreign networks to preview new music videos and music related TV shows, which they could then order broadcasting copies of to air. Unfortunately this seems to just be a shitty recording of the master tape of Ye’s europe Diary episode, but better than no recording at all.

Hello all. This is my first full in-depth DD on an industry/sector, and it's on an industry many of us know: film. I'll cover the 5 main film and movie studio stocks, with NFLX, DIS, CMCSA, WBD, and PARA. I will not be covering large tech companies that tack on streaming(AAPL, AMZN) or much smaller studios in this. I will also not be including Sony, as it's too diversified away from film and, currently, has a very uncertain future. If people want a deep dive into it, then I will eventually do one.
NFLX: Netflix is the obvious favorite to win the streaming wars. They've got a clear lead over the competitors and have a mind share that few in the industry share. Their earnings are also quite deceiving. You see, in the movie business, there is very high amortization costs on the films created, and this makes net income look much worse than it actually is. Free cash flow for Netflix is very high, at about 7 billion dollars. The company has made a ton of original content, such as Stranger Things, Wednesday, Bridgerton, The Queens Gambit, Squid Game, and plenty of others. This strong IP is the lifeblood of the entertainment industry. One good show can lead to spin-offs, merch, games, licensing, and even theme park rides. So, what are the downsides? Well, value. Netflix is currently probably the most overvalued production stock out there, with endless growth priced heavily in. Based on a DCF valuation, I'd project their current fair value to be somewhere from 350-450 dollars, and that's with extremely high amortization continuing. The company also faces some threats from other streamers, but these threats aren't really gonna hurt Netflix. It is at a point now where it will stay. It also faces threats from potential strikes and royalty rights, as we saw with the recent strikes. I'm only gonna mention this for Netflix, because they are acutely vulnerable to backlash. The other studios have other distribution platforms, such as linear networks, licensing, and the box office. Netflix has none of these, meaning the normal ways in which writers and royalty holders would get royalties doesn't apply to Netflix. If royalties become a major issue in streaming, this will likely hurt Netflix's margin the most, as they have no other means of distribution currently. What are some future expansion plans for Netflix? Well, they've recently been making a big push into gaming, and this is likely where they'll be for a few years. Gaming is a great market currently, as it's rapidly growing and very popular amongst youth, the most attractive demographic for media companies. Netflix also has the potential to move into an unexpected market: theme parks. Theme parks have shown themselves to be extremely resilient and consistent, with both Disney and Universal raking in a ton from their domestic and international parks. Netflix hasn't licensed out any of its content to either of the major theme park players(outside of some Halloween horror nights) and Gen Z and Millennials have overwhelmingly show that they would rather spend their money on experiences and on travel than on stuff. Theme park experiences can provide this, and with Netflix holding as much data as they do and how much original IP they have, a theme park could provide a ton of opportunity. Overall, Netflix is a super strong company with a strong future. The biggest problem with Netflix is obvious: They're just too attractive. The fact that they have strong management and a bright future is very much priced in, and the business has gotten overvalued. I'd wait for a big dip here to buy in, but if that dip comes, I'll be first in line.
DIS: Disney is a stock that has gone through the ringer recently. In 2019, they were at an all time high. They had just finished the highest grossing franchise in history, with the infinity saga coming to an end. They also had a box office hit in Rise of Skywalker(although any Star wars fan hated it), had finished their acquisition of Fox, the Disney parks were dominant, adding new attractions, and their long awaited Disney+ had finally launched. So, what went wrong? Well, first, covid. You can't ignore the impact of covid on the business. It cost them billions of dollars, and caused major delays in attractions and films. Second, Chapek. Chapek was bad for Disney, but so much worse for the Disney parks. Anyone who went during Chapek's reign can tell that costs were extreme, availability was low, and the overall experience just wasn't the same. This was primarily because of issue number three: Disney+. To this day, Disney+ has never been profitable, and a ton of their shows have been lambasted by the general populous. Disney+ forced leadership at Disney to seek out money elsewhere, which led them to the very profitable parks division. This gouging has made many people not want to go to Disney parks, and the constant talk of a recession has not made people more eager to spend. The final issue is to do with the films themselves. Disney hasn't really had a lot of "hit" movies, especially in the original IP department. The constant reliance on Marvel to drive the box office has hurt a ton, and recently they've only really had movies like GOTG3 and Avatar really show up as big hitters in the box office. The movies themselves have been uninspired, garbage sequels. Some people will say this is a "woke" issue, but that's not really true. Plenty of "woke" movies have done super well, and the issue isn't that the movies were "woke", it's that they objectively sucked. They also have the minor issue of their CEO needing a successor, however I do not believe this is a major issue, simply because they have a lot of really qualified people currently. They shouldn't pick who Iger wants, as that turned out horribly for them last time. So, with all the downsides in front of us, what are some of the good parts of the business. Well, the IP of the business remains better and stronger than any other company. The business has also survived through significantly worse stretches than it's currently in. Before Eisner, and right as Eisner was leaving are obvious examples, but the brand survived and came out much better. Disney+ will also very likely be profitable this year, and it will continue to show strength going forward. Disney has also committed 60 billion to their parks and experiences, and this should help to make the company considerably more, as oftentimes the parks run into issues of supply and not demand. This increase in spending should drive experiences forward to be the real revenue and EBIT driver of Disney. They also have the sports business, which has shown a lot of potential going forward. Currently, it is under threat of cord cutting, but it really seems like Disney is moving the right way with this side of the business. We've also seen a considerable slowdown in Disney crap in the box office, as the constant churn of terrible movies has ended, and going forward, we might actually see some solid productions. Overall, the business seems to be turning itself around, and the low price is not reflecting of the potential margins the business can have. The parks have an operating margin around 30%, and this will increase over time, as it historically has. Streaming also has the potential to create high margin opportunities. This is primarily pulling from a creator like Netflix and their current guidance to have an operating margin of 25%. Disney can achieve similar margins over the next few years, as it already has a ton of content, and much of the platform is built out. There is also the threat of cable cutting, however, Disney has gotten to a point where they don't need cable or the linear networks nearly as much as a few years ago, and it seems like cord cutting will stabilize soon. Disney also owns Hulu TV, which many consider a solid replacement for cable, and it could be a growth driver from people looking to get rid of cable, but not necessarily the amount of media cable provides. Based on all this information, I put Disney into a DCF, and got an approximate valuation ranging from 150-200 dollars. This is based on margin growth, alongside a consistent growth rate of around 7-8% over the years. This shows that maybe Disney is still being valued as if their streaming and film business won't provide the cash flows that they potentially can, especially with higher margins. Overall, this is a strong business that has survived really poor leadership, and will likely survive through almost anything.
CMCSA: Comcast. Everyone's favorite company. Don't you just love calling your ISP when your internet is down for 8 hours for literally no reason? It's just the best. In all seriousness, Comcast has a really strong ISP business, which is where I'll start. It accounts for 60% of EBITDA, and it very profitable. Also, contrary to popular belief, Comcast has diversified to the point they no longer have any EBITDA coming in from cable video or cable advertising. It is all internet and business connectivity. Comcast has also recently launched Xfinity Mobile, which is showing strength in competing with large cell providers, and could potentially be a major growth driver for the business. Now, with their ISP business, they have the obvious threat from companies like Verizon and T-Mobile recently making plays for the home ISP market. This could provide a big threat to Comcast, but they're investing a ton into new technology, and it's unlikely that they'll lose out a ton of market share to these new players, but it's something that will play out over the long term that we'll have to see play out. This is the backbone of the company. It provides consistent growth and cash flows, and it's unlikely to be strongly disrupted, simply because telecoms is really damn expensive, and the cost, for most large players that can afford it, isn't worth it. So, what are the real downsides? Well, as I mentioned, Telecoms is expensive, which has led to Comcast racking up a small debt of... 100 billion dollars. Now, this debt is very manageable for Comcast, and they can easily pay it off...if everything goes right. Now, if the telecoms business goes tits up, maybe from some new technology, and Comcast is unable to fight back, then that debt will prove to be an albatross around their neck. Now, enough with the boring telecoms. Let's talk about the fun stuff: NBCUniversal. This business has actually been one of the most impressive recently. First, Universal, for the first time since 2015, has taken the spot as the #1 studio, with movies like FNAF, Oppenheimer, Super Mario, and Fast X all dominating the box office. This movie strength has shown that Universal has the real potential to be the dominant studio, as Disney has been slipping for some time, and it's not like Warner Bros or Sony are releasing anything that can overtake Universal. Universal also has their parks division, which has been growing extremely fast. They're planning on opening a brand new park in Florida in Epic Universe, and these recent developments make me think that Universal is really turning a new leaf and becoming a real leader across the board. There is, however, one big, flashy downside to this business: Peacock. Peacock is not one of the "winners" in streaming; it's not even close. Currently, there are 3 main winners of streaming: Netflix, Disney/Hulu, and Max. Peacock doesn't have the same pricing power as these other players. This really comes down to the lack of content on the platform. Despite Universal owning a ton of original movies, and NBC creating a lot of great shows, they don't put their content on Peacock, instead choosing to bid it off to other players. NBC also hasn't had a big original to bring people in. Disney had the Mandalorian, the multiple Marvel shows, and plenty of great Hulu shows like the Bear and only murders in the building. Max has HBO, which pumps out great shows like TLOU and Succession. Netflix has, well, so many great originals and licensed shows that attract people to the service. The only show like this on Peacock is Yellowstone, and plenty of other great shows like Brooklyn 99 and Suits have been licensed away for money, which directly undercuts Peacock. Sure, the service is growing fast, faster than any other streamer, but the fact that they have such low prices compared to others shows that they can't really charge for the service the same way Disney, WBD, or Netflix can. So, how much is this business really worth? Well, a DCF which considers consistent margins and a slow, 3% long term growth rate gives business a valuation of 50-70 dollars. This is considerably higher than current values, and shows a solid potential to under predict management, as management at universal has shown a ton of competence, and the business still holds a diverse, strong future.
WBD: Ah yes, Zaslav's death pit. Many investors on this sub have been sucked into the tar pit that is WBD. It has really strong cash flows, as its FCF is around 6 billion last year. The main reason they aren't currently profitable is because of their massive amortization cost. Remember with Netflix how I mentioned that studios have very high amortization costs? Well, it would appear Zaslav is going on a write-off spree, locking in as many tax benefits as possible. This play is obviously to get more FCF to pay off the massive debt. The business has 3 sectors: Film, linear, and DTC. Film is currently in an odd position. Sure, Warner Bros has had massive hits with Barbie, Wonka, Dune, and Godzilla, but the business is facing strong margin issues, and revenue increases are offset by major structural issue still within the company that will need sorting. WBD has always played in second place, right behind Disney for the box office, but that position is slipping, as they're now in third place, and this box office slowdown could really hurt them. Still I wouldn't worry nearly as much about this section of the business. The creatives at Warner Bros have continually shown themselves capable of telling great stories, and the marketing team here absolutely does their job. Overall, this is probably their second strongest business, right behind HBO. HBO produces some of the best, most iconic shows out there, and it has continued to do this despite changing consumer tastes. This all goes into the DTC pipeline, which leads us to Max. Max is, overall, a pretty strong business. Is it profitable? No, but it won't stay that way long term. I can almost guarantee that, with how strong the shows are on this platform, that it will be one of the few survivors of the streaming wars, albeit in 3rd place of the major media companies, behind Disney and Netflix. So, if movies are a pretty sure bet for WBD, and streaming is likely to provide considerable cash flows in the future, why is this company not a no brainer? Well, it comes down to 51% of their revenue: linear television. I don't need to be the first one to tell you cable is in a decline, and it's not coming back. Sure, the other players are exposed, but Disney and Comcast get around 10-20% of their revenue from cable, and, much more concerning for WBD, around 80-90% of their EBITDA comes from linear television, and this is all under serious risk of being wiped out. The other media players can survive and continue to make money without Linear networks, while WBD cannot. It needs to rely on a dying form of consumption, and it really needs that money to keep coming in, because it has the minor issue of 40+ billion in debt, and that debt is maturing over a very, VERY long time period. So, WBD really needs to shift to streaming, which has proved really hard for the business. Despite already having a ton of subscribers, and charging a TON for Max, they still only make up a fraction of their total revenue through DTC, and DTC somehow includes HBO now, which means it's even lower. So, this means that WBD is reliant on declining revenue, increasingly difficult movies, and a currently flat growth streaming platform to pay off their huge debt. That, right there, is a really big disaster in the waiting. WBD is definitely in the value trap arena, as it really doesn't have a concrete future, and Zaslav isn't exactly some wizard executive that can fix this. In fact, Zaslav's solution is just to cut everything, which might work short term, but will never work out long term. So, I guess it's time for the valuation. With very slow growth of around 1-2%, and growing operating margins, up to an industry average of around 17%, alongside a much lower future amortization value of around 15%, I project WBD to have an approximate value of 14-22 dollars. However, it must be noted that this stock is still in a bit of probation, as there's still so many risks here, and even without that debt, the risks of poor leadership and a directionless ship can really hurt the company. I'd personally probably stay away, at least for now, as there's much better players in media.
PARA: Man, if WBD was a housefire, this would be a gender reveal in California type fire. The disaster that has been Paramount recently has really been, well, disastrous. First, the company has even more cable exposure than WBD. Second, Paramount+ just flat out isn't gonna succeed, and Paramount isn't large enough to support it. Third, the movie studio itself is reliant on a few IP to drive sales. It has been in last place for years, and only managed to climb to 3rd place with Top Gun, before dropping in 2023. The crapshoot that has been this company recently is just not worth a deep dive. It doesn't grow, it doesn't produce hits, its linear networks continue to decline, and it's gonna get bought out soon. Only reason to even consider this currently is as an arbitrage play. Maybe a merger where it remains public, merged with skydance, could succeed, but currently there just isn't much to like.
So, with all the large studios covered, which ones would I personally invest in? Well, to me, the only 2 that make real sense right now are Disney and Comcast. Disney is a strong turnaround, and should be a great long term play. Comcast is both a telecoms and media play, and even with its peacock service being, well, bad, it still shows strong financials and a really strong future. I would also wait for a buying opportunity for Netflix, similar to what we saw in 2022, or wait on WBD to see if they can really make streaming work. Thanks for reading.

Max has HBO, which pumps out great shows like TLOU and Succession. Netflix has, well, so many great originals and licensed shows that attract people to the service. The only show like this on Peacock is Yellowstone, and plenty of other great shows like Brooklyn 99 and Suits have been licensed away for money, which directly undercuts Peacock. Sure, the service is growing fast, faster than any other streamer, but the fact that they have such low prices compared to others shows that they can't really charge for the service the same way Disney, WBD, or Netflix can. So, how much is this business really worth? Well, a DCF which considers consistent margins and a slow, 3% long term growth rate gives business a valuation of 50-70 dollars. This is considerably higher than current values, and shows a solid potential to under predict management, as management at universal has shown a ton of competence, and the business still holds a diverse, strong future.
WBD: Ah yes, Zaslav's death pit. Many investors on this sub have been sucked into the tar pit that is WBD. It has really strong cash flows, as its FCF is around 6 billion last year. The main reason they aren't currently profitable is because of their massive amortization cost. Remember with Netflix how I mentioned that studios have very high amortization costs? Well, it would appear Zaslav is going on a write-off spree, locking in as many tax benefits as possible. This play is obviously to get more FCF to pay off the massive debt. The business has 3 sectors: Film, linear, and DTC. Film is currently in an odd position. Sure, Warner Bros has had massive hits with Barbie, Wonka, Dune, and Godzilla, but the business is facing strong margin issues, and revenue increases are offset by major structural issue still within the company that will need sorting. WBD has always played in second place, right behind Disney for the box office, but that position is slipping, as they're now in third place, and this box office slowdown could really hurt them. Still I wouldn't worry nearly as much about this section of the business. The creatives at Warner Bros have continually shown themselves capable of telling great stories, and the marketing team here absolutely does their job. Overall, this is probably their second strongest business, right behind HBO. HBO produces some of the best, most iconic shows out there, and it has continued to do this despite changing consumer tastes. This all goes into the DTC pipeline, which leads us to Max. Max is, overall, a pretty strong business. Is it profitable? No, but it won't stay that way long term. I can almost guarantee that, with how strong the shows are on this platform, that it will be one of the few survivors of the streaming wars, albeit in 3rd place of the major media companies, behind Disney and Netflix. So, if movies are a pretty sure bet for WBD, and streaming is likely to provide considerable cash flows in the future, why is this company not a no brainer? Well, it comes down to 51% of their revenue: linear television. I don't need to be the first one to tell you cable is in a decline, and it's not coming back. Sure, the other players are exposed, but Disney and Comcast get around 10-20% of their revenue from cable, and, much more concerning for WBD, around 80-90% of their EBITDA comes from linear television, and this is all under serious risk of being wiped out. The other media players can survive and continue to make money without Linear networks, while WBD cannot. It needs to rely on a dying form of consumption, and it really needs that money to keep coming in, because it has the minor issue of 40+ billion in debt, and that debt is maturing over a very, VERY long time period. So, WBD really needs to shift to streaming, which has proved really hard for the business. Despite already having a ton of subscribers, and charging a TON for Max, they still only make up a fraction of their total revenue through DTC, and DTC somehow includes HBO now, which means it's even lower. So, this means that WBD is reliant on declining revenue, increasingly difficult movies, and a currently flat growth streaming platform to pay off their huge debt. That, right there, is a really big disaster in the waiting. WBD is definitely in the value trap arena, as it really doesn't have a concrete future, and Zaslav isn't exactly some wizard executive that can fix this. In fact, Zaslav's solution is just to cut everything, which might work short term, but will never work out long term. So, I guess it's time for the valuation. With very slow growth of around 1-2%, and growing operating margins, up to an industry average of around 17%, alongside a much lower future amortization value of around 15%, I project WBD to have an approximate value of 14-22 dollars. However, it must be noted that this stock is still in a bit of probation, as there's still so many risks here, and even without that debt, the risks of poor leadership and a directionless ship can really hurt the company. I'd personally probably stay away, at least for now, as there's much better players in media.
PARA: Man, if WBD was a housefire, this would be a gender reveal in California type fire. The disaster that has been Paramount recently has really been, well, disastrous. First, the company has even more cable exposure than WBD. Second, Paramount+ just flat out isn't gonna succeed, and Paramount isn't large enough to support it. Third, the movie studio itself is reliant on a few IP to drive sales. It has been in last place for years, and only managed to climb to 3rd place with Top Gun, before dropping in 2023. The crapshoot that has been this company recently is just not worth a deep dive. It doesn't grow, it doesn't produce hits, its linear networks continue to decline, and it's gonna get bought out soon. Only reason to even consider this currently is as an arbitrage play. Maybe a merger where it remains public, merged with skydance, could succeed, but currently there just isn't much to like.
So, with all the large studios covered, which ones would I personally invest in? Well, to me, the only 2 that make real sense right now are Disney and Comcast. Disney is a strong turnaround, and should be a great long term play. Comcast is both a telecoms and media play, and even with its peacock service being, well, bad, it still shows strong financials and a really strong future. I would also wait for a buying opportunity for Netflix, similar to what we saw in 2022, or wait on WBD to see if they can really make streaming work. Thanks for reading.

My college research project is on this and I want to share my findings. I also want to share some interesting ways people got discovered who don't fit under a particular category. Note that a lot of these artists across most categories benefited from nepotism, but there's also plenty of artists across every category that didn't
Child Star - straightforward, mostly Disney Channel actors. Drake, Britney Spears, Olivia Rodrigo, Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, very common for pop acts. Tate McRae was also a famous dancer.
TV Talent Competition - pretty common for pop and country acts. Benson Boone, Morgan Wallen, Kasey Musgraves, all the One Direction members,
Social Media Phenomenon - common across all genres. we have one of two categories here:
Local Phenomenon- performed everywhere making a name for themselves in their hometown/city. common for rap and rock. this was Bruno Mars back in Hawaii, Florence + The Machine, Artic Monkeys, and so many underground rappers. i also noticed that local phenomenon + virality is a very common combination.
there's a lot of people i'm not sure if they were more social media phenomenon or local phenomenon, like Bad Bunny, Brent Faiyaz, Nicki Minaj, BigXnthaPlug,
Performance Discovery - this is different from being a local sensation in that they didn't get discovered at their own show/opening for someone/a festival. Eminem got signed after a national rap competition. Taylor Swift actually got her first manager (Britney Spears' manager) from singing America The Beautiful at some US Tennis Open. out of the 100 biggest artists i researched, those were the only two examples i found.
Crossover Networking - VERY common for rappers. every artist's careers depends on networking, but i mean artists who are constantly appearing on other artists' projects, and their collaborators become more and more famous overtime. for the Atlanta rappers this might also imply being a local phenomenon.
In Industry As A Non-Artist - similar category in the sense of them lending their talent for other people before becoming a huge solo act. Kanye as a producer, Bruno Mars as a songwriter, Taylor Swift too
Audition Into Industry - kind of dead, i'm not seeing major labels hold auditions these days but maybe big managers still are. this was how Beyonce, Chris Brown, Rihanna, and Kendrick were discovered.
Unconventional Discovery - category where these artists had to have been at the right place at the right time, definitely do not bet in this being the way you are discovered lol. SZA was hired to sell merch at a Kendrick Lamar concert and her friend started blasting her mixtape, which got her label contacts, but she wouldn't be signed until after she released projects making a name for herself. J Cole stood outside of Jay-Z's studio for hours waiting until he came out so he could give him his CD, was turned down because Jay-Z was looking for pop artists to sign not rap artists, but he was remembered and then was invited back after releasing projects making a name for himself. Lil Wayne... somehow got Birdman's number and rapped freestyles on his answering machine. he was signed at 11 years old. i'm also putting Billie Eilish here cus her entire household was in the entertainment industry and her brother set her up with the right contacts extremely quickly
