Not sure when appropriate to bottle
Hi! It’s my first time making mead so I thought I would post here for help. I just used a hydrometer for the first time and based on the reading, my ABV is at about 9.2%. I took a sip and it’s honestly super strong (no off flavor though, just like very strong wine). I was wondering, is now a good time to bottle then? There doesn’t seem to be any more activity so I wanted to know if now was a good time to bottle? I made the must on March 9th and it’s been fermenting since then. I also attached a pic if that’s any help. Thank you!

Update crested gecko tank
I updated my tank. This is a 18 x 18 x 24 in terrarium. I have my 8 to 15 month crested gecko in there now. It has a grow light, mister, and digital temp and hydrometer set up. I have a Pothos and snake plant in there now, and thinking of adding some kind of rootless bromeliad. I will answer questions if you have any. Does this look like a good tank.

2024.05.06 23:07 lucky607 Question and Comment

Question first. My house is consistently between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. I want a sweet mead that doesn’t take long to age. I have EC1118 and know I can back sweeten, but the aging time… I’m more likely to add spice than fruit, if that helps. What yeast do you recommend? It’s not going to be in a competition and I don’t have a really sensitive palate.
As for the comment, can I just say that kits on amazon are not ideal for people who want to take up the hobby in earnest? Mine didn’t come with a hydrometer. The recipe told me to mix with hot water and stagger the YEAST not the nutrient. The hose it came with for racking is useless. Oh, and I was just supposed to wait for the bubbling to stop. I mean…. Two months and bubbles two minutes apart and I was thinking this is never going to to end…
So, thank you. Y’all can be a tad surly in some discussions but the information has been priceless. Even the pinned post. I was like “Is that mold?” And then realized I had yeast floats and a little vanilla.
I’m not super vocal here and this is my first post but y’all are great. I could not take up this hobby without you.

2024.05.06 22:48 Baradoss_The_Strange Two Hydrometers, Two Different Readings

Long version: Last year I broke my hydrometer (1), and replaced it with an identical make and model (hydrometer 2). I noticed some oddities at the time, but placed them down to a) temperature; and b) changes during the time it took to arrive. This mead-making cycle I noticed some odd numbers as well, in particular when I replicated an old recipe and needed a different amount of honey to reach the same gravity in the must. So, I bought another hydrometer (3) to check if it was just my imagination or if there really was something going on... And, yes: The two hydrometers are showing different results. There's a 10 point difference between the two all in all.
They are both calibrated to 20C water, and when tested in 5C (soft) water I am getting 1.008 from hydrometer 2; and 0.998 from hydrometer 3. Given the fact that they should be showing 1.001 at that temperature, they're both wrong - but hydrometer 3 looks less wrong. As the numbers of hydrometer 3 also match more closely with what I would have expected from hydrometer 1, I am going to assume that hydrometer 2 is simple faulty.
Has anybody else had experiences like this, or have any thoughts on any of the above? Or, any tricks for getting around problems like this in future?
TL/DR: Two identical models of hydrometer are showing different results. In 5C water, one shows 1.008, whilst the other shows 0.998. The 1.008 one seems to me to be the *more* faulty of the two, but the 0.998 one doesn't seem to me to be perfect either.

My first batch is bottled, some thoughts and questions for the sub
How it 'finished'
How it started
I've just bottled my first batch that I started in January (I have a second batch on-going right now with more of a lemon kick) this first one is just a really basic beginner mead; Honey, Water, Yeast, Nutrient and time. I've enjoyed tasting it at various points throughout the process, just to get used to the flavour profiles - there was a huge change at one point in the flavour that felt like it was finding its personality, so to speak, and it's genuinely very refreshing. Some details below:
(UK/EU Dates) Brew Started: 05/01/2024: Starting Gravity: 10.090 First Rack: 10/03/2024: Gravity: 1.018 Bottle: 04/05/2024: Gravity: 1.0175 (stable) (I think that nets out at a 9.52% abv rating?)
Honey Used: Hilltop Honey: Blossom Honey (1.5kg/3.2lbs to 4litres/1 gallon) Yeast Used: Young's Active Yeast (1tsp) Extras: Young's Yeast Nutrient (1tsp)
Some questions as follows:
  1. I don't have the most discerning pallet but I must say that this very much tastes like a very "lite" cider rather than a honey mead. The honey flavour is not very present (at least to me) and it does taste more apple-esque than honey. Why is this? Is it the Yeast used? Not enough honey? Or is it something more specific like the bees' honey being made from an apple orchard? It's not bad, it's very refreshing, but very different to the profile of mead I've had before (granted that was likely manufactured crap) or is it just a lack of back-sweetening? Which brings me to my second question...
  2. I'd love to try back-sweetening one or two of these bottles, according to my hydrometer, it's right on the line of Medium Dry/Sweet. Can you back-sweeten individual bottles? And if so, how do I go about that? Do I just drop a glug of the same honey into the bottle of a specific ratio, and then leave it age in the bottle?
  3. Is it okay to now leave these bottles somewhere fairly dark, just to proof for x amount of time or months? How much difference will it really make to the flavour profile? Are we talking a slight shift in one direction, or a big change in the depth of flavours?
Thanks! Excited to join this community that I've been lurking on for months, and looking forward to making more.

2024.05.04 21:02 Necessary_Truth1977 The evolution of Banana!

The evolution of Banana!
The evolution of my beautiful pastel ball python, Banana. This is like a documentary LMAO so strap in!
Possible CW: In depth talks of improper care for snakes, the death of snakes, and other things that may seem upsetting to those who loves and care for these beautiful animals.
My dad has owned snakes for longer than I have been alive (I am 18 years old.) He had two wild caught ETB (Emerald tree boas.) He spent thousands of dollars on these beautiful snakes. One was a female, and the other had been a male. The male stayed in a 20 gallon aquarium that consisted of one perch, a bowl of water, a heating pad and no substrate. His female stayed in a forty gallon, with one perch, a bowl for water, minimal substrate and a light atop of her at all times, a red light.
He attempted to breed the two, and once he believed they were done with the process, he had moved the male back to the 20 gal.
I loved these snakes, dearly. I’ve held both, the female tolerated me more than she did my dad (has striked at him twice yet has never done to me.) The male has never ate in his care, and four months later had ended up dying. It was rather traumatizing as I held him in my arms as I ran him under warm water, and he coughed up blood and slowly died in my arms. My immediate thoughts of his death was the fact he was a wild caught and was stressed and yet the female had eaten.
She ate for maybe a year, or less then, and started to regurgitate her food. My dad had told me it was common for ETB’s to regurgitate. Oh, and her name was Lightning. That’s how I’ll be referring to her for now on.
One day we had been at the feeder store to buy her a rat, when I saw this beautiful python. PASTEL/MALE JUVENILE. That what had been written on the enclosure he was in. He was a striking yellow with a brownish black pattern and little “ghost” faces. There were other morphs, two different ones. A banana pastel, and a spider (yep, terrible.) Both equally as gorgeous, yet the regular pastel simply caught my heart. I told my dad I wanted him, and I had the money but I wasn’t going to buy him yet. That I went to research about him, and buy his essentials before getting him and my dad was quick to try and change my mind. Saying how we had everything, a tank (the old 20 gal that the male had been in.) Some hides (one hide), and heating (a heating pad.) I argued that I knew nothing about them and he assured me he knew everything about balls, he’s taken care of so many and they are essentially some of the easiest snakes to care for.
I was admittedly wary of his approach given the fact I thought Lightning had not been given the enrichment she needed. So I argued that I had /no/ substrate for him, and he said that I did! I can use my left over bedding from my now deceased hamster. (It had been a mix of paper bedding and aspen.) I nearly yelled at him, saying obviously a snake can’t use HAMSTER bedding as substrate?? Yet the lady at the counter chimed in and told me it definitely can work and she absolutely trusted my father. So, I had given in. November 25th, 2022 I had bought my first snake, my first reptile ever. I decided I was naming all my animals after foods (my cat being the exception) and had juggled between the name Egg or Banana, and had eventually landed on the name Banana. Nanners, his cute little nickname.
My dad held Nanners as I set up the 20 gal, putting the heating mat under, the aspen and paper bedding (as shown in the first image.) A small water bowl, driftwood I had for my hamster, a small little tunnel thing I had for my hamster (her name was noodle, I miss her sm ;-;.) and a half log I had for Noodle. TERRIBLE SET UP!! Yet little freshly just 17 years old me (17?!? You should have KNOWN BETTER BRUH) didn’t know… until I did of course.
I had no hydrometer, I also had no thermometer or thermostat of ANY kind. It looked cramped, I was uncomfortable with it. It was small, so I did what I should have done in the first place, research. And as I did so, I have met with wonderful people. I went on reddit and was given a lot of feedback from sympathetic voices. Everything had clicked for me, my care was indeed terrible, and my dad has never properly cared for snakes in his lifetime. He’s always, and I mean always, tried to backyard breed them. He thought of them as… accessories, rather than pets.
I remember, I was 5-6, we had two female boa constrictors that I had named (lollipop and shadow.) They both lived in a 20 gallon together. We didn’t even have them for a year before they had gotten loose and probably died. Snakes can live 20+ years. If he had been caring for snakes even before I was born he should /at least/ have had a snake that I would have grown up with. Yet he didn’t, no snakes in his care had lived over two years. That isn’t normal.
So be it. This is my snake, and I am going to let that snake thrive and live for as long as it can. So, I bought a DHP when I could. In the meantime, I had put a towel on the ground of the tank so he didn’t burn himself, along with the hamster bedding. I lost sleep over this, I had the fear he would go under the towel and suffocate, cook himself, or both. I was constantly watching him, I was tempted to just take the heating pad off.
Finally, the DHP comes in and my dad is BITCHING. Saying how I didn’t need it, this and that, etc etc. that the heating pad was fine and threatening to put it back on when I went to my mom’s for work. We argued and I essentially told him he was my snake and I was going to care for him how I wanted to.
I had a 60 gal that Noodle was in. Yet I read somewhere big spaces stress the juvenile out, so I didn’t move him in as soon as I should have. (I should have double checked the source, that even a 20 gal was not the minimum for a juvenile. This was purely my fault and I fully take responsibility for not moving him in quicker.) I have a DHP for him, and bought reptile sand and loose coconut fiber to mix.
My dad… would say off putting but things. How he would get me a female ball python if I let them breed (I shot that down so quickly.) How he wished Banana was a girl she he would be bigger. That upset me because Nanners is not an accessory I don’t have him to be like oh look at this big snake I have, I have him because I love him. Animals to me are like what children are to people. I’d die for Nanners. I’d do anything for him. He owes me absolutely nothing as I owe him absolutely everything. He’d make comments about how he wished I got a pied or a more beautiful morph instead of. It upset me, Banana is absolutely perfect how he is and I never wish for him to be different.
Soon, I move and I have no job. I’m relying on my dad for things, and he refuses to buy anything but food for Nanners because he truly believes the care I’m giving him is not good. I’m stuck in a terrible situation, Nanners is stuck in a terrible situation. My dad refuses to buy him UVB due to believing it wasn’t a need.
Back to lightning. She isn’t doing well, she keeps regurgitating and my dad is confused. She’s extremely dehydrated and I tell him that. The mesh top isn’t holding moisture, the red light is terrible, she needs more humidity because it’s natural for her, she needs a large and tall enclosure with more perches, better husbandry, and enrichment. She also desperately needs a larger water bowl to properly soak. He ignores me, says she was thriving until now and I just GROAN!!
I am sympathetic, and I’d buy so much better for her if I could but I was out of a job. I got to visit my mom at her new place, I am there for a week and I come back home to my snake missing his DHP…. what. I immediately ask my dad and he said that his snakes light broke a few days ago and she needs it more than he does. I’m upset, I got to take the DHP only you find it on the ground, and not hot. It’s on, though. So I click it off, on, take it out and put it back in, nothing. It’s broken. I’m reasonably upset and tell my dad to buy me a new one, he refuses and takes the lightbulb from the porch light and says this will work.
Sadly, I use it. Because in my head some heat is better than no heat. My birthday comes around, I get money and immediately buy him a DHP.
Soon, Lighting dies. My dad is confused, he said she was thriving, I’m just relieved she no longer has to suffer. She deserved better.
My dad is now refusing to buy him food. He has gone months without eating, I beg my dad he needs something and he tells me tomorrow, tomorrow, and tomorrow never comes. He tells me it’s okay, snakes are able to handle it.
One time he bought two mice and fed him them in concession, Nanners regurgitated. I was upset because he did it while I was away where I had no say.
Soon, I’m visiting my friend more, she also loves animals and was a former vet assistant. She has a beardie. We make plans for me to move in, and be roommates. So, she helps me. She helps me move Banana to his 60 gal, she gives me some more clutter to fill in, she even bought him a uvb!! His care is slowly getting better, as it should.
Finally we rip the bandaid off and move him to her house. (My dad and I had a screaming match.)
We get him a secondary source of heat, a ceramic heater, it’s also what is kept on at night given that it doesn’t project infrared heat that mimics the suns heat. We use double sided aluminum to entrap the heat and moisture. We get thermometers and hydrometers. Moss, fake plants, more hides and clutter! We have timers for the UVB and dhp.
Banana is small. Since I got him in November, I am presuming he was hatched in September. I estimate he is around his 20 month mark. (A year and 8 months.) He is about 19 inches long, and is underweight. 4.5 ounces in weight (127.5 grams.) We started feeding him every other week to ween him to getting used to food, and we’re going to do every week now. We’re also looking to get him a vet appointment soon!!
Thank you to everyone who has been here for Banana’s journey, I am sure to update you all as much as I can!!

2024.05.03 18:37 Kickmaestro My Martin 00-15 mahogany solid top cracked today. Is it really this sensitive?

Bought in 2017 and I've had a hydro kit since the beginning. I live in Sweden where it gets too dry around the start of october and then gets safer around this time of year but especially after mid-late june. I saw and learnt this with the hydrometer, but it was so predictable that I stopped looking at it and let the batteries run out. I make the sponge wet once a week or everytime it gets near too dry. Last day at 17h00 I put the guitar in the case after playing since maybe 13h00, much outside but kept mostly in the shadow as I rotated how I sat. But there at 17h00 I forgot the sponge until I picked up the guitar again at 12h00 today. I noted how I forgot it but began playing again. The sponge was not dry while kept outside the case. I saw the crack first just recently 17h30. A typical one in the center of the top beyond the bridge. It looked worrying but touching it and giving just a little pressure and hearing it crackling made me feel a little sick. I re-wet the aponge and put it in the case. I am 80% sure it happened when I played today and within the last hour. I just look at my guitar a lot. It was on the coach the last 15 minutes when I saw it. I see that moisture is 25% at the moment which is the lowest of the day and it's as much as 75% on the opposite end of the 24hours with a 55% average. It must have been the same yesterday.
Yeah, I'm annoyed, I really love my guitar and thought I had control over this. But now already I guess it's sort of fine as it seems perfectly repairable, reading other posts here with identical looking cracks. But I am player that will not accept being much more worried than I was before, and guess I might accept repairs. I mean, refret is looming on this and other guitars as well. If anything I could be just a little more careful not forgetting the sponge, and getting it in there as soon as I saw it had been without, and not pick it up like I did today? How bad is the sun? It's Sweden and 19 degrees today and I sit in the sun the get just barely hot and warm on my skin but I feel the surface on the guitar and shift position to not let it get too warm on the same spot. I also intermittently take it inside and walk to the shadow. I have presumed it's not super safe but I definitely thought I was far from reckless. It's May and I don't sit in direct sun light at all near proper summer temperatures. I have mostly heard that you kill guitars when keeping inside cars. I also thought drought killed a guitar with days or weeks and not a few hours of semi-dry air, like today? I sort of hope I was just unlucky. Is it another thing for Mahogany maybe?
So I'm repairing this. Is it important to repair fast, btw? I don't live near a luthier. I'm Swedish but I have 2 hour drive Oslo and I can go there in 5 days. There could be one more locally but would I do best in making sure I find great luthier?
I'm quite handy myself and might dare something of repair, but I don't have a great wide clamp that would cover the withd of the top, which I need? I've also heard that types of glues have evolved to become very good but I need to choose a good one?

2024.05.02 06:33 scuzzbuckit ginger bug wine

Ginger bug wine
Recipe 1 gallon RO water 1kg strawberries 1kg sugar Lots of ginger boiled in the sugar water and then discarded
Same recipe with a kg of blueberries
Yeast is about a pint of ginger bug in each
These were both completely past the 1.020 on the hydrometer, couldn't get a reading. They're both still bubbling away after 2 weeks.
Where would you go next? Would you wait for it to go dry and then sorbate it and add more fruit? I reckon it's going to be rocket fuel, ive made some gingerbeer about 9%, just finished a bottle and you get the initial ginger and then a strong alcohol taste. Just worried its going to taste like crap
These were just experiments to see how strong a drink i could make with a ginger bug.

2024.05.01 11:51 chasingamy1994 Bruxism causing severe tmjd

So I have been taking amitryptaline for about 8 weeks, during that time the dose has been scaled up to 30mg in the last week. In the first few days it felt great but after that the pain creeps back. I also have noticed that I'm bruxing more since using the amitryptaline, but it has overall taken my pain down significantly, before it was 10/10 every day, now good days are 1-3, and today is about a 4-5/10.
I had 50 units of botox on each side in late March, but I still am biting down very hard, I'm a clencher not a grinder. Today I've woke up in so much pain, despite the michigan splint, despite the 30mg amitryptaline, despite the 100 units botox, despite the 1200mg magnesium glycinate.
I really don't know what to do anymore, I've had the splint two weeks and although it has helped some, I'm still needing codiene at least every other day.
I just can't live like this...
I do physio for ten minutes a day as well as 5 + minutes of massage, when it's bad I do heat therapy. I'm a young woman and this is just no life. I can't focus on a career, I can't go traveling. It really really gets me down that the one constant thing in my life is pain, every single day, no matter where I am or what I'm doing.
The pain in my right side today is awful, usually my left side is the problem side. I had a chicken sandwich yesterday and had to have a codiene because of the pain after. I just can't live like this, it's miserable.
I put so much work on every day to try and revers the problems I'm causing in my sleep, but none of it matters as when the next night comes it's like groundhog day and it just resets everything.
I'm sick of living my life according to my pain, I'm sick of thinking about it all the time. I miss my old life. I miss the old me.
I'm in the uk and I want to get prescribed something offlabel for bruxism, either clonidine, buspirone or tiagabine, but I think a regular gp would not prescribe it.
Has anyone here been able to get a perscription for either of those for bruxism in the uk? The splint just gives me something else to bite on.
What else can I do at this point?

2024.04.30 18:00 Weak-Brick-6979 First-timer / Beginner - how long does mead need to sit/ferment?

So I'm making my very first batch of mead. Just basic 25% honey 75% water, with some organic, sundried rasins for natural yeast.
I knooow I know, most people do/recommend all the sterilization and buy the commercial yeasts etc. I've done wild fermentation before (sourdough, kimchi, and sauerkraut) so I'm not new to fermentation. I'm just not interested in going through all the trouble of sterilizing with any of my ferments, and I want to be able to make it without relying on anyone to sell me yeast. It's a self-sufficiency thing. I understand wild yeasts are unpredictable, may not taste as good, and may produce lower alcohol contents. I'm fine with that! So long as it tastes half decent and I end up with some halfway decent alcohol %.
Anyway, my ferment is going well so far. I forget what the terms for the stages are, but it smelled clearly alcoholic at the end of the first week/stage when you put the airlock on, and it's very actively bubbling now just over 1 month into fermentation. I don't have a hydrometer so I unfortunately don't have the initial SG and won't know the alcohol %. I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on one and then have it potentially not work out/never use it again. I also didn't know what to get - some supposedly break really easily, there are complaints about accuracy, etc. etc. Anyway, any recommendations there would be appreciated!!!
Is there any way to know my mead is done fermenting without SG measurements? How long should I wait for it to ferment? What's the bare minimum time for it to potentially taste good? I don't want to start another, bigger batch (I've just started with a small 2L batch to minimize waste if it doesn't go well) until I know it's worth doing again.
Thanks for any tips or suggestions :D
Edit to add another question!!
So with my other ferments, specifically sourdough, you can keep a live culture/starter that you use over and over again for your new ferments/breads. I've done this before with the liquids from kimchi and that works too. Is there any reason you couldn't do this with mead? Could I just keep feeding my current ferment and keep it as a live culture to use over and over again, like sourdough? If not, why not?

2024.04.30 01:06 Lottaine Wine Not Clearing - pectin haze or do we need to degass our wine?

Wine Not Clearing - pectin haze or do we need to degass our wine?
First time wine makers and we’re not sure if we have a pectin haze or if we need to degass our wine… or maybe it’s something else?
Context - we made apple wine. Started on March 10th. Our recipe included apple chucks inside a mesh bag and apple juice, sugar, campden tablets, yeast nutrient, acid blend, black tea for our wine tannin, and pectin enzyme. Once all stirred, we let it sit for 24 hours before adding the yeast. Our hydrometer reading was 11%. Once our yeast was added, we stirred our wine everyday, once a day, for 13 days, until our hydrometer hit 0. On March 24th, we moved our wine into some clean carboys and let our wine sit till this past Friday, April 26th. Just over a month.
We syphoned off the wine from the settled sediment into a new and clean set of carboys. We had a taste of some of the wine that didn’t fit in the new carboys and it’s like a nice dry chardonnay. It was super fizzy, until we stirred in some sugar to make it a bit sweeter, then it was a bit fizzy.
Next thing we did once in the new carboys was also add kieselsol. We gave the wine a good stir with a spoon (about a minute) put the airlock back on and let it sit for an hour. After an hour, we adding the chitosan. We gave the wine another good stir (about a minute), put the airlock back on and let it sit for the weekend. We now don’t see any clearing difference over the past three days. From my understanding of chitosan and kieselsol, it should work in a day or two to clear wine.
What did we do wrong here? Any suggestions on why our clearing agent didn’t clear our wine? We know apples have loads of pectin, so could this be a pectin haze? If so, how should we go about clearing it? Is it just a time thing or is there something we can add to our wine to help with this? Or, our other thought is our wine needs to be degassed. I’m skeptical about using a wine whip as I feel that would put more air bubbles in the wine than remove them. Should we just let it sit longer instead?
Thanks in advance for the advice on what we should do next!

On day 6 of recovery from wisdom tooth extraction and I’m both confused and agitated. Today I woke up at 4 am to the feeling of my jaw on the side of extraction site vibrating but it’s painful like a “cutting the skin to bleed” type of pain
Is this normal? How can I stop it? When should I worry?
If you’re asking me if I am able to ignore it the answer is no; nothing is distracting me from this pain.
Allergies and Intolerances: Used to be midly allergic to eggs (can eat them now) Lactose Intolerance
Daily Medications: Mirtazapine 30mg AntiDepressants
Pain Meds I have been taking: 2x Co-Codamol (8mg of Codiene mixed with 500mg paracetamol in the non-coated pill form) when I wake up and before I go to bed 2x Ibuprofen 200mg liquid capsules every 4-6 hours (an hour after taking the Co-Codamol in the morning and an hour before taking the Co-Codamol for bed)
Extraction information: Bottom Jaw on the left side; tooth was growing horizontally pushing my nearest molar also called an “angular impaction”
Remedies I have been suggested to use by dentist and my personal results:
Daily salt water rinse - causes pain when the water touches the cut and hits the stitches and well as a gagging sensation opted for orthodontist and dentist approved mouthwash appropriate to use after a tooth related surgery or extraction which hasn’t caused any pain or gagging sensations
Ice pack on the site for 25 minutes on then 30 minutes before using it again - minor improvement in terms of swelling, pain management quality sub-par
Increase protein for 2 weeks to help with healing and recovery
Any of other advice you think would be helpful is appreciated.
Thank you
Edit in accordance to rules: Not a drinker, only smoke weed and use an reusable vape with regulated e-liquids. I don’t have a picture of the X-ray and not comfortable showing my face.

2024.04.28 20:02 Tvt-pin17 Herniated disc symptoms got worse

I've been reffered for surgery but it's going to be a few months minimum I was coping before on the pain killers all be it with some pain and the pins and needles / numbness in my left foot / calf But I was like okay I can stick this out till surgery Something happened in the last few days that have shot my pain and things to the next level of shit Feels like fire down my entire hamstring , so much pain in my knee like I want to rip the front of it off and I literally can't stand up strait or walk without a stick it's literally unbarable it's making me shake the pins and needles Is now almost all the time especially when I stand up and it's also started tingling on the other side of my lower back (the opisite to the siatica ) And I look at my partner today and say I just can't handle this like this for the whole wait I have kids and I can't be this unable to care for them I don't know what to do right now
Do I call doctor in the morning and see if there's any more painkillers I can use? ( currently on codiene , oral morphine amitriptaline, paracetamol and ibuprofen and I take a diazepam at night )
Or do I go to A&e in hope that they can put me on a ward and operate ?
I cannot keep doing this any longer with this level of pain
Any suggestions please

2024.04.27 21:33 TheDeafOne Starting my first batch!

Hello! I am in the process of gathering the equipment needed to brew my first mead. I am making quite a large batch for a beginner because I already have most of the equipment needed. The plan is to use 18 pounds of wildflower honey to create a five gallon batch, using 5-7 g Lavin 71B yeast and fermaid-O. I'd like to put strawberries, raspberries, and maybe a few drops of vanilla in the mixture for the primary and then top it off with a fresh batch of the same ingredients for the secondary. Likely will be an eight month process, 4 months in primary and 4 months in secondary, but this will be dependent on hydrometer readings.
My question is- what is the best way to start this mixture? Just chuck it all in the fermenter to create the must without really heating the water, minus a separate mixture of wateyeast with a high enough temperature needed to activate the yeast?
I am certain I will need to add nutrients to the yeast periodically in the first few days of starting before leaving it alone, depending on hydrometer readings.
I have been reading the wiki, but there is a lot if information that the research has been mildly overwhelming. Equipment wise, I am pretty much set and know what is generally recommended to have. Appreciate any advice for a noob!

2024.04.27 20:25 CV2nm Physio thinks I (30F) have Cauda Equina, boyfriend (doctor) disagrees

I had a larsoscopy in January for endometriosis. They cut my ateraty during surgery, and I bled into my pelvis and left side of my labia. I had a grade 3 hematoma for around 4 weeks. Ultrasound confirmed it had resolved. I had no physical follow up with my surgeon and was discharged whilst still suffering from pain in surgery site, back and groin whilst sitting and on return to activity post op at 2 months.
The pain developed within a week of my discharge to my groin. I developed a deep burning sensation that worsened in evening. After urine samples, swaps, and pessaries for dryness, my GP and boyfriend who is a doctor agreed it may likely be nerve injury or flare related to post op complications. I'm now on Pregabalin and doing stretches at home I've responded well too. I'm still struggling, but managing pain for meds and slowly been able to move more without pain and sit again (which was impossible before) and on some days have reduced my Pregabalin dose from 150mg per day to 125mg. I'm still very restricted on mobility and lose the ability to relieve myself (bladder always feels full) when pain is pretty bad. I've been diagnosed with suspected pudenal neuralgia.
I've had no MRI or ultrasound scan yet on area. I'm seeing a specialist gyno unit in 6 weeks and just started paying privately for pelvic floor physio. I've found the pain is worse after physio but it's helping, although today I've had difficulty opening my bowels and feel tired/fatigued all over, and have pain in my back and tail bone. Although I'm taking codiene for pain so I'm aware of constipation issues this can cause and the physio performed a massage which I know can cause pain later on. I've got reduced sensation in my left labia, inner thigh and loss of strength compared to right side. I've had this since the surgery which I put down to the hematoma. I was told it would return but it never did. My physio says they are concerned I have Cauda Equina based on urine difficulties and lower back pain and asked me to go hospital. My boyfriend performed another examination at home and disagrees with her. I've decided to wait until Monday and get my GP to make the final call, as she is overseeing my care essentially.
Should I be concerned? Im not sure whether to freak out and have just been taking it easy this weekend but again, I'm having a low pain day incase of nerve pain!

2024.04.27 18:03 occultdeathcult Enclosure Check-- does this look alright?

The water bowl is in the bottom right corner but it's a small bowl (like what you'd make creme brulee in). I have since added a ceramic heating bulb to the top of the left side and two electronic thermometers/hydrometers (one on either side.) There are three hides-- the two wood on left and right and one in the middle under the driftwood. If I need more clutter I can easily add it, I just thought it was getting to be quite full.
Heat bulb is set to 90, heating mat underneath is set to 85. I probably don't need both but I had already set up the heat mat before realizing it wasn't giving off enough warmth to increase the ambient temp. Both heaters are on thermostats. It's raining today (and for the past few days) so the humidity is at about 65% but I live in a mostly arid climate so it should go back down after the rain passes.
I'm going to pick up my snake in about an hour. He's a baby born in late 2023, so still a tiny noodle. If anyone has any feedback, I'd love to hear what I can do!

2024.04.26 05:43 VenusDragonTrap23 What do you think about my sisters’ gecko enclosure?

My sister has had her leopard gecko for over a year now. He seems healthy and ok but I am worried about his conditions. Like, he’s surviving but the husbandry isn’t very good. I’ve tried to tell her this but she just gets annoyed with me (she’s 11 btw). I have a snake of my own, so I don’t know much about leopard geckos but from what I know of just reptiles in general it doesn’t seem great. I don’t have exact information right now but once I do I will add it. I also don’t have a picture but I will add that too.
Her tank is a little small, around 20 gallons. 38Lx12Wx12H in inches. It’s a thrive dessert essentials kit. It is a front facing enclosure with a screen lid. There is a large water bowl on the cool side (she doesn’t refill or clean it often). The substrate is a reptile carpet. The heat source is a 75 watt bulb wired to one of those things that has a probe and turns the lamp off and on depending on the temperature. But, because it is a light as well, and she leaves it on 24/7, this results in the light constantly turning on and off every few minutes all day. I don’t know much about Leos but I think this would stress and disorient him.
He has 2 hides. One is a thrive desert cave with a thermometer and hydrometer, but she lost the display disk so it’s just a cave. It’s a bit large, but the gecko just hides in the corner where he’s least visible. The other hide is on the cool side and it’s just a plastic log with some fake plants glued on. I haven’t seen him show any interest in it but I don’t watch him a lot.
That is all he has in his enclosure. No clutter, the hides don’t even hide him well, no humid hide, nothing to interact with, no way to tell if his humidity or temperatures are good. Not to mention the lighting. Also, his feeding situation is a little pitiful.
He eats often, he’s a chonky guy, and I think this is because she just puts food in. When it’s empty, she just refills it. There’s a bowl she puts mealworms in, and even when they die, crawl out, or turn to beetles, she doesn’t do much with them. I don’t even know if the gecko eats them. She leaves a few crickets in his enclosure and he eats them when he wants. I’ve put some in a few times and he will eat two or three immediately. He usually doesn’t eat all the crickets she gives him, leaving two or three hopping around until they die or get eaten. I’m pretty sure they bite geckos so I’m not sure why she does that.
Also, I sprayed his tank yesterday for her and he seemed super thirsty, licking the little droplets that absorbed into the carpet. It was cute but seemed like he was desperate for water, even though he has a bowl. Do geckos prefer to drink droplets? Is the water not fresh enough? I’ve seen it bone dry a few times and have had to remind her to refill it.
Anyways I feel bad for the little gecko. She doesn’t try to get him used to handling so she complains that he’s not friendly, and has even wished she gotten a different one. I’ve told her the things she needs to fix but she just says she has told our dad that, but she’s only mentioned it once or twice and doesn’t actually try.
Any advice will be appreciated. I hope his conditions aren’t as bad is I think. Please let me know what you think.

2024.04.23 04:17 xTalon32 Desperately need advice.

So, my mum got a snake on Saturday to get over her fear of them. Kinda jumped in like "let's do it and ask questions later" sort of thing since we had a lot of stuff from my old bearded dragon left. I did a lot of research in the few days before that - a lot from this reddit - and her enclosure is not getting hot enough or humid enough. We're handling her about 15 minutes a day right now so she gets acclimated to being handled as well. My main concern is she shed right before going to the pet store, around Feb 21 this year. So based on the information posted here and videos online, she's due to shed very soon. And I want to make sure the enclosure is at the right humidity for her to shed comfortably and live a long healthy life. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
