2024.05.15 23:21 DirectorNecessary538 Starting Up vs. Buying Out: Sylvie Froger, An Entrepreneur Who’s Done Both, Shares Her experience

Sylvie Froger wanted to escape the corporate world, and she did it by solving a problem she experienced when she had to relocate for work more than a decade ago. After surviving the "nightmare" of moving to London, Sylvie created a stress-free solution to help people do the same. That's how Simply London, her first business, was born.
"I got fed up with the corporate world and wanted to do my own thing. That was 12 years ago, I built this from scratch, and it's still going." But she didn't stop there.
"I started to think about a pre-retirement plan which involved having more than one source of revenue. I needed an additional source of income and I've always liked the creation of businesses.
"It's exaggerated, but I love learning, I love new things, and I love tech, so all of this combined led me to think: well, maybe I could actually acquire an online business that I can work on in my spare time."
In this interview, Sylvie shares the lessons she learned from buying an existing tech business, the issues she encountered, what she would've done differently, and how Boopos helped her. If you want to buy or sell a business, here's a lot of wisdom worth reading!

How Boopos helped Sylvie gain confidence and finance her acquisition

Sylvie learned about Boopos through podcasts that discussed the topic of flipping businesses.
"Boopos made it possible for me to think that I could finance it because I wasn't sitting on a pile of cash, so I needed external financing. I wouldn't have known how to raise funds or things like that; that's not how I built my first business; I built it from scratch without raising any funds.
"So Boopos gave me the confidence, a little bit of security as well with the pre-approved businesses." Although Sylvie recognizes this is not a guarantee, it is helpful to know that the business has no major problems.
"I also came across the concept of seller financing which I used as well".
Sylvie acquired PowerImporter, a tool for easily updating Webflow websites from Airtable, CSV, and WordPress. "PowerImporter is about saving people time, and that's something I'm very passionate about. So the product also fitted my personal taste for the type of service or product I wanted to bring to people."

7 tips from Sylvie Froger

1. Write down the best & worst-case scenarios

"I think the biggest worry was that financially, I would struggle to repay all the debt I had to take to buy this business, knowing that I was sitting on no cash at all.
"What I did was lots of calculations: best-case scenarios and worst-case scenarios, and then I looked at: What happens if we're in the worst-case scenario? Can this be sustainable?"

2. Ask for documentation

One of the biggest challenges Sylvie faced was the lack of documentation. Although this hasn't given her business technical problems, it has made problem-solving slower.
"Everything had been developed by the seller, so it was all in his head. There was pretty much no documentation, technical, or actually any documentation on the business, so I had to extract information from his head by asking lots of questions. If I were to re-do it, I would request documentation as part of the buying process.”

3. Look for honesty in a seller

Her advice on what to look for in a seller comes down to honesty.
"(When) analyzing what might impact the business in the future negatively as of market trends, competitor products, changes in the tech world that could have an impact… I think that's really useful to get from the seller's perspective because they know their market, they know their product".

4. Choose a business that motivates you

Sylvie was able to combine both her passion and what made sense from a financial standpoint. But that's not always the case.
"The business model that I purchased came with quite a very high margin, so I did both. I'm guessing it's not always possible, it depends also in which sector you are.", she recognizes.
"If your motivation is financial then maybe you don't need to be in a business whose product or service you love. As close as you get to what you love, whatever that is. It could be just the money or it could be the challenge, type of product. Does that make sense? Yes? Go ahead!"

5. Follow your intuition

"I would say avoid something that your intuition tells you to avoid, I think intuition is still very important. Facts obviously are, but also intuition, and it could be intuition about the sellers, it could be intuition about the type of business you're not really sure about".

6. Don't underestimate the cost and time of development

Although Sylvie planned to hire a coding specialist, she did not expect the time and cost that it would take.
"As with development, that's my lesson: it takes three times the time and ten times the cost, so whatever plan you've made in developing in the technological world, it will often be underestimated.
"If you buy a business which exists already it's fantastic because a lot is set up already, so there's major benefits in doing that compared to building from scratch."

7. Find a community

Sylvie recognized that she would love to be part of a community. And especially, she hopes to connect with other women who might have similar experiences.
"Another challenge for me was and still is to be a woman in tech. I don't want to put everything onto gender differences, but I felt very self-conscious and I still do being a woman in the tech world.
I still find it daunting but it's interesting, so I would also love to be able to connect with other women in the tech world to see what they think about it."

Why buying a business is a good path to follow

"Building on something that has been done fairly well or very well is a pleasure, so you buy time, obviously, when you buy a business that exists already".
In her case, the seller wanted to continue developing products but he understood that this particular business needed to scale on marketing. "The major benefit for me was that not a lot had been done marketing-wise, so there was a lot of potential."

2024.05.15 23:19 Capable_Cockroach_19 Resources that I used as a CPE and EE major

Resources I used as a CPE and EE double major that helped a lot
Hello! I graduated last spring, but I wanted to share some resources for current students that either: - helped profoundly in my classes while taking them - taught me a lot and I wish I had them during my class
I’ll also share some of my thoughts on learning for these subjects that pulls away from just reading textbooks.
Anyways, here’s the list…
  1. “Code” by Charles Petzold. This is an incredible book that walks you through how a computer works from the very basics through solving problems with light switches to advanced computer architecture and software. I wasn’t a beginner when I read this, but it strongly reinforced my skills in the area.
  2. “A Student’s Guide to Maxwell’s Equations” by Daniel Fleisch. This is a short book that carefully walks through electromagnetic fields by explaining core equations step by step with lots of examples. It also includes several helpful problems with answers online on his website. Helped me get an A in my fields class and only took like 2-3 days to finish.
  3. “A Common-Sense Guide to Data Structures and Algorithms” by Jay Wengrow. It walks you through DSA in a simple way with easy problems (including coding) including solutions in the back of the book. Currently going through it and it’s a very enjoyable read.
  4. Professor Leonard’s video series on differential equations. It’s completely free on YouTube and it teaches you differential equations from the ground up with easy to follow videos that include examples he gives you time to solve first and then walks through step by step. Again, it’s literally free!
  5. Ben Eater’s build your own 6502 based computer series. This video series on YouTube shows you how to build an 8-bit computer from complete scratch using computer chips you connect on a breadboard. Teaches you circuits, digital logic, low level coding, and how computers work all in one. You can buy a cheap kit from him to do it yourself along to the videos. I put it on my resume since I led a club teaching others how to do it and I’m pretty sure it’s a big reason I got so many job offers.
So if you’ve noticed a pattern here, it’s that the resources are easy to read and are engaging with problems you can do (very critical) along with actual solutions to check your work or get unstuck. They’re all cheap (or free) and you can probably get all of these for free online. Personally, I found traditional textbooks hard to be consistent with and overpriced.
Best of luck in your studies everyone, I hope this helps!

Mac - Free To Play - Super Confused
Hello All,
A friend has been bugging me to give this game a whirl for awhile. Looks like a lot of fun. But, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to get a free account live on my M3 Macbook Pro.
1- Clicked the start a free account
2-Created a FF14 login, no issues.
3-Launcher downloads.
4- Click the launcher and the everything in the attached image happens in the order noted. When I get to MOG, I get a window that has me designate that I'm on a Mac. The next window, my only two options are to pay for the game or enter a license code. Obviously, trying to play for free to give it run first.
Ideas?
Your time is greatly appreciated, Jin

2024.05.15 23:15 SanMartianRover This is how boomers act with tech support. And this was someone that worked AT A CHURCH.

I've found that almost EVERY time I get a user who works for a church, they are incredibly rude, idiotic people who treat customer service like absolute trash. They are horrible. The worst insults I've gotten at this job have been from people who work at churches or realtors. Anyway, here's the transcript of our conversation today.
(03:43:30 PM) me: Hello! Thanks so much for contacting WEBSITE Support. My name is BLANK and I will be very happy to help you. Please allow me a few moments to access your account.
(03:44:16 PM) ID10T: BLANK--I'm thinking about switching PROJECT platforms because I cannot stand every single frickin time I want to access & make changes to my PROJECT , I have to go through 2 factor identification.
(03:44:24 PM) ID10T: I'm getting sick of it!
(03:44:36 PM) ID10T: And then it says, skip for 2 weeks--nope that doesn't work either!!!!!
(03:44:55 PM) ID10T: Get someone to shut down that security measure on our account.
(03:45:15 PM) ID10T: If someone wants to hack out account, I'm o.k. with that. Let them.
(03:45:55 PM) me: We can't turn that off, but there may be some reason the login cookie is getting deleted on your machine. WEBSITE uses a login cookie that expires after 2 weeks. If you clear this cookie, you will be required to login the next time you visit WEBSITE. If you have any kind of browser extension or anti-virus that clears cookies on an active basis, that could be clearing the login cookie for WEBSITE and causing you to be logged out. I suggest checking into that. This could be a behavior of the browser itself, an addon/extension of the browser, anti-virus on your computer or even apps/processes being run on your machine by your business (if you are not on a personal device). Also are you running AVG? In most cases, that is the anti-virus which is causing issues with the login cookie.
(03:46:43 PM) ID10T: I do not have this problem with ANY OTHER PLATFORM except WEBSITE
(03:46:48 PM) ID10T: and it's super annoying
(03:46:55 PM) ID10T: I don't even know what AVG is
(03:47:11 PM) me: It is anti-virus software. Are you on a personal machine?
(03:47:17 PM) me: Or is it managed by your organization?
(03:47:19 PM) ID10T: Just have one of your IT guys go into our account & deactivate all this crap
(03:47:37 PM) ID10T: my machine is managed by my organization
(03:47:44 PM) me: That's not how it works I'm sorry. The login is maintained by a cookie which gets saved to the device. If it's deleted, the login is not maintained.
(03:47:51 PM) ID10T: Actually, no, I think you would classify it as personal
(03:48:16 PM) ID10T: They why do I not have this problem with any other platform. Sometimes it logs me out within minutes
(03:48:24 PM) ID10T: then I have to get another code all over again.
(03:48:33 PM) ID10T: Can you not appreciate how annoying this is????????????
(03:48:37 PM) me: I do
(03:48:45 PM) me: I understand it's frustrating and I am talking you through the solution.
(03:48:56 PM) ID10T: It is super annoying. Annoying enough that I'm looking at Constant Contact just to be free from your stupid security
(03:49:00 PM) me: Are you running any privacy extensions in your browser?
(03:49:17 PM) ID10T: I have no idea about privacy extentions in my brows
(03:49:26 PM) ID10T: I'm not a computer scientist
(03:49:36 PM) ID10T: I just want to work on my fricken campaign!!!
(03:50:25 PM) ID10T: Turn it off! Get your IT guys to turn it off on our account. We don't care
(03:50:47 PM) me: That isn't an option. Are you running any anti-virus on your computer?
(03:50:50 PM) ID10T: Am I the only person who's frustrated as hell with this annoying blip in your system?
(03:51:07 PM) me: No, it has come up before which is why I know what causes the issue. I know it is frustrating. I am trying to help you.
(03:51:28 PM) ID10T: I have no idea if I have anti-virus software on my machine.
(03:51:51 PM) me: Are you working for a company that has IT available that could find out?
(03:52:16 PM) ID10T: Yes, but then I have to pay him $90/hour. Are you going to give me 6 months free to get this problem resolved?
(03:52:50 PM) ID10T: That feels like a good solution. Give me 6 months or even a year for free and you won't hear from me again. I'll pay to get your platform fixed!!!
(03:53:25 PM) ID10T: You know, it used work perfectly fine. We have been long, long customers of yours. And then, no...someone had to "FIX" the platform & now it sucks!
(03:54:44 PM) me: This is not an appropriate reason to provide credit, I'm sorry. Let's try this. Can you go to the profile icon in your account, click it, and at the bottom, it says Cookie Preferences. Click that and make sure all cookies are enabled. Let me know when that is complete.
(03:54:47 PM) ID10T: Sometimes i have to enter a code like 4 or 5 times a day
(03:55:24 PM) ID10T: well, it's stuck behind this chat window...
(03:55:35 PM) me: You can open WEBSITE in a new tab
(03:55:37 PM) ID10T: I'm not able to move the chat window? or am I
(03:56:52 PM) ID10T: I'm trying to find cookie preferences
(03:56:57 PM) ID10T: it's not jumping out at me...
(03:57:18 PM) me: It's at the bottom, here is a screenshot: [image]
(03:58:45 PM) ID10T: Essential Website Cookies Always Active
(03:58:53 PM) me: All of them are enabled?
(03:59:32 PM) me: Especially we want Performance and Functionality Cookies enabled
(03:59:36 PM) me: The little slider should be green
(03:59:50 PM) ID10T: Performance and Functionality Cookies I had to hit the slider on this one
(04:00:03 PM) ID10T: same with analytics & customization
(04:00:08 PM) me: Ok they were off?
(04:00:18 PM) ID10T: yes
(04:00:27 PM) ID10T: 2 of the were off... analytics & performance
(04:00:28 PM) me: The performance one is most important. That should fix it.
(04:00:49 PM) me: It MAY require you to verify one more time, but it should work for 2 weeks after that.
(04:01:16 PM) ID10T: OK BLANK. I guess I can't test it while I'm logged in here but I hopeyou are right.
(04:01:26 PM) me: I hope you have a wonderful day :)
(04:01:31 PM) ID10T: You too!
(04:01:32 PM) me: Thanks for contacting WEBSITE support. Have a great day.
They had cookies disabled.
Isn't it amazing how childish boomers are? Why do they think that being rude is the best option? They actively make the world worse with everything they do.

2024.05.15 23:11 Lamens-Terms Struggling with "Do you have to be smart to be a developer?"

Anyone else find themselves struggling with this "am I smart enough question?" Every time I hit a snag in my learning to code journey this question lives rent free in my head. It's on repeat in my head like the Power Rangers theme song. Anyway, I found this random blog post to be really helpful. Especially the perseptive of persistence and work ethic. It was really grounding for me- just keep practicing. Anyway, I thought others might find it helpful too.

2024.05.15 23:10 testingafewthings Thoughts on What The Fog?

I’m quite the Rougelike fan so I got the game with the free code and I really am not hooked at all, i was kinda bored by it mostly. I hate the artstyle, it feels alien to DBD in the worst way possible, it looks like shitty mobile game assets. The stage design is quite dull for the most part and the movement doesn’t feel as smooth as it could be. Overall it just feels like Risk of Rain 2 but with worse gameplay and visuals and you can’t mod the characters to have giant Futa cocks so if you were planning to buy WhatTheFog buy Risk of Rain 2 instead.

2024.05.15 23:09 doctorchimp Anyone done a recent Nvidia Driver Install?

1080ti
Just wanted to turn a PC into a CounterStrike 2 box since the performance on native Linux has finally improved
So i decided to run Debian 12 Sid and just put Steam and discord on it.
However im having issues installing the Nvidia drivers which seemed to be fairly straightforward from the wiki.
I get dependencies errors on
apt install Linux-headers-amd64
And if I continue with the install after adding the contrib non-free and non-free-firmware to the source list
I get an error on Nvidia Daemon and it hangs in CUPS after booting from GRUB.
Just wondering if someone has done a recent Nvidia driver install, and will get the exact error codes tonight. I’ll give it one more try before giving up my dream on a minimal deb 12 box and trying fedora.
I’m away from the computer and will try again tonight

How to be protected by CloudFlare using FreeBSD...
Hello.
we can't install cloudflare warp 1111 directly in FreeBSD,but we can install it in a little Linux vm and we can forward the connection....
How to configure the qemu-Debian vm :
# apt install net-tools # nano /etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/ getty@tty1.service ExecStart=-/sbin/agetty -o '-p -f -- \\u' --noclear -- autologin marietto %I $TERM # apt-get install python3-tk curl gpg sudo mousepad # Add cloudflare gpg key : # curl -fsSL sudo gpg --yes --dearmor --output /usshare/ keyrings/cloudflare-warp-archive-keyring.gpg # Add this repo to your apt repositories : # echo "deb [signed-by=/usshare/keyrings/cloudflare-warp- archive-keyring.gpg] $(lsb_release -cs) main" sudo tee / etc/apt/sources.list.d/cloudflare-client.list # Install : # sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install cloudflare-warp # nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/cloudflare-client.list deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/usshare/keyrings/cloudflare- warp-archive-keyring.gpg] bookworm main # warp-cli register # cp /ussbin/iptables /usbin # cp /ussbin/dhclient /usbin # systemctl set-default # nano /home/marietto/.profile /usbin/warp # nano /usbin/warp function jumpto { label=$1 cmd=$(sed -n "/$label:/{:a;n;p;ba};" $0 grep -v ': $') eval "$cmd" exit } start=${1:-"start"} jumpto $start start: sleep 2 warp-cli disconnect sleep 2 OLD_IP="$(curl -s api.ipify.org)" #echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward # I've uncommented this parameter inside the file /etc/sysctl.conf) sudo iptables -A POSTROUTING -t nat -s -j MASQUERADE warp-cli connect sleep 2 NEW_IP="$(curl -s api.ipify.org)" echo Connected to Cloudflare Warp... echo OLD IP is $OLD_IP , NEW IP is $NEW_IP mid : sleep 2 if [ "$OLD_IP = $NEW_IP ] then echo OLD IP is $OLD_IP , NEW IP is $NEW_IP : it does not work anymore,reconnecting... sleep 10 jump foo else echo OLD IP is $OLD_IP , NEW IP is $NEW_IP : it still works. sleep 10 fi sleep 2 jumpto mid foo: warp-cli disconnect sleep 2 OLD_IP="$(curl -s api.ipify.org)" warp-cli connect sleep 2 NEW_IP="$(curl -s api.ipify.org)" echo OLD IP is $OLD_IP , NEW IP is $NEW_IP : it works again. sleep 2 jumpto mid # chmod +x /usbin/warp # nano /etc/sysctl.conf net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 # nano /etc/sudoers marietto ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /usbin/iptables marietto ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /usbin/dhclient marietto ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /usbin/ifconfig

This script should be located inside the file /home/marietto/.zshrc (because I'm using zsh)
if ! pgrep -f qemu &> /dev/null 2>&1; then echo "The qemu / Debian-warp vm is not running,starting..." /uslocal/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 -machine q35 \ -cpu kvm64,hv_relaxed,hv_time,hv_synic -m 1G -vga std \ -drive file=Debian-warp.img,format=raw -rtc base=localtime \ -device usb-ehci,id=usb,bus=pcie.0,addr=0x3 \ -device usb-tablet -device usb-kbd -smbios type=2 \ -nodefaults \ -netdev tap,id=mynet0,ifname=tap20,script=no,downscript=no \ -device e1000,netdev=mynet0,mac=52:55:00:d1:55:01 \ -device ich9-ahci,id=sata \ -drive if=pflash,format=raw,readonly=on,file=/uslocal/ share/edk2-qemu/QEMU_UEFI_CODE-x86_64.fd \ -drive if=pflash,format=raw,file=/uslocal/share/edk2-qemu/ QEMU_UEFI_VARS-x86_64.fd -nographic -serial none -monitor none & else echo "The qemu / Debian-warp vm is already running." fi
Et voila' : my Ip is protected by CloudFlare when I use FreeBSD.

2024.05.15 22:51 devpat89 Not able to log in - IP blocked after single attempt

Update: marking this as solved. I don't know what caused the lock out - I'm 100% certain I only entered my password once. "Resolution" if it counts: I'm thankful I had the DSfinder app installed on my ipad through which I was able to see "IP Blocking" settings and managed to unblock the IP address of my PC. Had forgotten I had installed it on that device. Don't think it contributed to the issue as again, device is WiFI only and never open the Synology app. Just massively relieved!
Hi All,
Would appreciate some help here. I'm really confused what's going on.
Background
I last logged into my DSM 2 days ago on my PC. Just tried to log in right now and something odd happened, I'm used to signing in by entering my password followed by 2FA code even though it's my personal device. This time on attempting to sign on to my admin account, after entering my username I received a message to validate my log in using the Synology Secure SignIn app instead of entering a password. I do not have the app. I tried another non-admin account, still the same message. Upon attempting to log in with a password, instead I receive a message saying too many failed attempts have been made to log in and the IP address has been blocked. To be clear, I had not made any prior attempts from my personal device (it was sleeping until about 5 minutes before I attempted to log in). Although I couldn't access my DSM account, I was still able to access my mapped network drives. I tried to restart my PC and tried to log in again, but same result, and this time no luck with accessing mapped network drives either.
Edit to add: I never log into my NAS through any other devices besides this PC in my home network.
Existing Security
My NAS is exposed to the internet only via Plex. It is port forwarded so not the standard 32400 and behind a double nat. Plex has a secure password and also has 2FA.
I have firewall rules set up so only can be accessed in my country of origin UK, and after 3 or 5 wrong attempts I believe it blocks the IP. Prior to this I've never had any attempts made on my NAS.
I have my original admin account disabled, and the new one is super obscure. My password is beyond what is reflected here: https://caltechsites-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/imss/images/2023_Password_Table_Square.original.jpg
In addition, I haven't logged into my authenticator app on this device.
Oddities
One of the drives I have is dedicated to media. I'm still able to access this through Plex. I run Plex through docker and I am still able to access this through my NAS IP address.
Edit to add: I have DLNA enabled on my NAS, I'm able to access media through this as well (including through my PC).
I have another laptop that was also sleeping. I've just switched it on, it is still connected to my mapped network drives and I can access the majority of them (different limited access credentials), but none of the content is blocked by any means. I never attempt to log into DSM through this laptop. Only the initial mapping of the drives.
I've not received any emails notifying that I've been hacked/my content has been locked until I pay
Synology assistant isn't having luck finding the Synology NAS on the network at all either.
Maybe related
I've requested a speed upgrade from my internet provider. They've sent me a new router and asked me to plug it in within 5 days. I've not done this yet and was actually logging into my DSM account to double check all my settings prior to switching out.
If you're still reading, thanks so much!
At this point I'm clueless if it's something malicious or not. I'm going to run Malwarebytes overnight on my PC. Is there a chance that a change at my ISP side could result in the above?
I'm thinking worst case scenario I've been hacked, but let's say I have a keylogger on my machine, is it possible for them to break into my NAS based on my passwords alone? My 2FA is always from my personal phone and I don't log into that on my PC. Really not sure how else they could have gotten access, and again, no emails or anything, nothing has been zipped.
Would appreciate your help / suggestions on what I can do here please!
Thanks!
