The "Golden Age of Ornamental Penmanship", from 1850 to 1925, was a unique period in American calligraphic history. Beautiful penmanship was the rule of the day, and the flexible pointed pen was king.

2024.04.29 02:42 Helpful-Scallion-702 Help setting up 15 degree v-bit??? Really struggling with this!

I am doing cursive lettering carves 0.08" deep onto 1/4"(really more like .21") birch plywood and then filling the words with epoxy. The problem I am having is a 30 degree vbit starts to take away detail such as the oo in the letter B or the uncut areas in the loops of cursive L's and Y's when carving deeper than 0.025" or so, so I recently bought a 15 degree vbit off of Amazon for $20. I then started running into issues setting this bit up using inventables easel. I thought I finally had it figured out and it was cutting fine then suddenly after about 10 really small carves of names like Bella or max it suddenly started to tear the wood up really bad and I realized it had already went dull. Now I just spent $42 on an Amana vbit of the same angle and I am worried about setting it up. I really don't want to burn out another bit as I am in college working part time and don't have money for it. Anybody else have to set up a 15 degree vbit on easel or has another solution for me I would really appreciate it

2024.04.26 16:52 babylait Advice for improving handwriting & learning cursive?

My handwriting is very inconsistent. I would really like to try out different styles to find one that feels more like “me” but I’m not sure how to go about this. I’ve always really disliked my handwriting. Advice/tips on how to go about this? Resources or guides? My least favorite letters in my current handwriting have to be: Y/y, D/d, J/j, Q/q, r, E, A, G - these I am never happy with but I am looking to totally revamp all of the letters in the alphabet!
I’m also looking for guidance and resources for learning cursive. It was required in second grade but that feels like a lifetime ago and it doesn’t come naturally anymore.

2024.04.26 14:36 pandamaxxie An open invitation. (Part 1 of 3)

A letter falls onto every desk, doorstep and mailbox. It's closed with the wax seal of the merchant guild's founder. An open invitation to a welcome party, a large banquet to celebrate the successful surgery and return of the Founder's Fiancée. It's contents are less than formal, seemingly written by several different individuals. The handwriting shifts every few lines, it's endearing in it's own way.
"Hello wizards, warlocks, artificers, assorted magic users and magicless alike! Tomorrow a grand banquet shall be held near the Pandamonium Potions Shoppe, to commemorate the boss' success in curing his loved one, and to provide some solace to everyone in these stressful times! Even under the threat of puppets, permafrost and thievery, we must not forget to live our lives to the fullest! [this handwriting is charming and bubbly, in flowing cursive, with hearts on the I's.]
Anyone is welcome, so long as they do not harm the other guests. We have no need for more danger. [the handwriting here is classy yet stern. You'd expect this from royalty.]
There will be live performances from several demihumans! Fairies, beastkin, and even a Siren! [a few splashes of water can be seen next to this line, it was obviously written by the Siren herself.]
So please, send a reply back in the mail, or by the orb adress below, or... anything really, so long as we receive your replies, we'll prepare enough food for everyone! Probably... [the text is a little bit smudged, it almost looks as if someone dragged webs through the ink.]
We hope to see you all at the banquet! Don't be shy, and stop by!" [the finishing sentences are a bit crude, almost childlike writing. Whoever wrote this doesn't have the best of dexterity in their hands]
It's obvious the letter wasn't written by the founder, but his seal is on it, so it should be fine and safe to attend.
/uw this is a bit of an experiment, I'll be using the demihumans that work under Maximillian more, and his Fiancée Rachnia Silverweave will start showing up instead of him occasionally. Part 2 will be the banquet itself, which will be this weekend.

2024.04.26 13:27 Kapitan-kamote101 function of a signal sequence

I am tasked with determining the function of the first 18 amino acid sequences from a given sequence. Is there a way to figure out the function of a string of amino acids in a given sequence? I tried protein blasting it and scouring the articles of similar species for the function but to no avail. is there an easier way to do it?
for context:
I am doing a summary paper on a chosen journal article. this paper is about the expression of a cutinase enzyme with plastic degradation capabilities in E.coli. My professor asked me to find out the function of the first 18 amino acids: "MVRVFGLTLLALLVPALA" since it is not mentioned in the reference material as part of my incentives. To reiterate, I tried to blast this sequence and look for similar species with this sequence in the hopes of knowing the function in their own journal articles but its taking too long with zero results.

2024.04.26 12:22 CarelessCrow-5203 How readable is my writing?

How readable is my writing?
I'm a long time cursive writer but often write in print when my handwriting has to be read by someone else. My priorities are speed and a relaxed hand. Hence, I've fallen into bad habits because I know only I need to be able to read it.
Blank paper (no lines) is my default paper choice. While my sentences are generally straight across the page, individual letters aren't. My m's and n's and v's and u's resemble each other too closely. My letters are sometimes incomplete. I don't always connect my letters properly. Some letters can be too small or tight.
With all this in mind, how readable is this bit of text? If you were to just do a quick read (not necessarily to find faults), did you have to stop often, scratching your head, trying to decipher what in the world that word is? Can you even read it?
I dont really need advice on how to improve, just the above questions. :)

2024.04.26 06:04 littlelulumcd The Eras Tour Part ✌🏻A Fortnight until Paris 🤡

The Eras Tour Part ✌🏻A Fortnight until Paris 🤡
Evergreen disclaimer for all my posts (and comments too)
I have adhd so I’m very likely going to make spelling/grammar mistakes - please accept my apology is advance for that. And for my overuse of commas.(My apology as well for all the additional context my adhd is going to give you in parentheses whenever I write).
I intended to write a longer post about red herrings and how they tie into the TTPD era, Midnights era, and a coming out theory. With Taylor posting that eras teaser and the timing of it all, I had to pivot. I decided to narrow my focus to explain why I think shenanigans might be in store for her show(s) in Paris
I recently posted a theory about Taylor hiding a story within the release of Midnights and TTPD. In order to find that hidden story, you have to listen to both albums in reverse track order. Starting with You’re Losing Me as the prologue and Fortnight as the last chapter (for now).
I have a quick amendment to one part of my theory thanks to this post by u/notfirejust_a_stick.
I now look at You’re Losing Me as a break up song. But not in the way that Taylor presented the story. I believe queer Taylor is singing to Taylor Swift™️ the brand. YLM is describing a break up between queer Taylor and Taylor Swift™️ the brand. Which will culminate in Taylor coming out in a direct way.
While I’m not able to get deep into the original theory I was working on, to summarize, I think Taylor has been laying the groundwork (like a good mastermind) for another coming out plan longer than we realize. And while I haven’t been able to figure out when the plan started yet, there is a big connection to the Speak Now TV announcement/era, MH (sorry), and TK (sorry again).
I think Taylor is using MH and TK as red herrings to distract the general public/Swifties from what she is lining up.
A quick note
I understand that some of this might be seen as reaching and there could be logical explanations for everything. But I think it says something that a lot of what lead me to this theory are connections that started to emerge last year, even if the original theories didn’t play out the way people at the time thought they would. It feels like seeds that were planted are starting to bloom Also, I think it’s exciting to believe we could be on the precipice of something that would make a huge impact. I don’t know about you, but I think a lot of us could really use some light in the world right now.
Highlights (or lowlights depending on your perspective) of the SN TV era
  • SN TV was announced on May 5th in Nashville, the birthplace of Taylor’s career (and if this is when her coming out plan ramped up, Nashville can also be viewed as the rebirth of Taylor’s career after the death of the old Taylor)
  • The big story in the lead up to that announcement were rumours that Taylor had a new beau who she very briefly dated in 2014 aka Matty Healy
  • There were rumours that Taylor and MH were about to “come out” as a couple at the first Nashville show (interesting choice of words 👀)
  • MH played on stage with Phoebe Bridgers that weekend and while he wasn’t spotted together with Taylor in public…
  • This was the same week that Taylor and MH mouthed the phrase, “This one is about you. You know who you are. I love you,” on stage. MH did it on May 3rd, while Taylor did it on May 5th, when MH was in the audience.
  • The Sunday of that same weekend, Rolling Stone published the infamous interview with Dianna Agron where she is for some reason, years after the fact, asked about the rumours that she and Taylor dated back in the day. Sure, you could argue that Taylor was the biggest story at the time so RS was going to bring it up, but the timing is incredibly suspect. Also, prior to RS asking Dianna that directly about dating Taylor, I can’t remember another woman Taylor was rumoured to date (never mind someone as private as Dianna) being asked about it point blank like that. I could be wrong about that though.
  • Diana gave a non answer and she didn’t deny anything
  • Multiple outlets ran stories about the RS interview that Monday. It was spreading like wildfire
  • That afternoon, (ugh this was so crushing lol), Taylor’s romance with MH was confirmed
  • Over the next few weeks their romance played out like very public fairy tale (sound familiar?) and then just as quickly as it started (less than a month later), they were done
  • SN TV was released on July 7th - National Truth Telling Day
  • The day of the album release, Taylor played in Kansas City at Arrowhead stadium 👀
There was such a frenzy around SN TV and everything MH, that it feels like a fever dream how everything went down, especially when you add the Dianna Agron of it all in the mix.
Let’s revisit what Taylor posted when she announced SN TV.
https://preview.redd.it/n6k1zz5hyqwc1.png?width=1540&format=png&auto=webp&s=e18bd0389f4f68d666021f8a930359adb6b59267
The use of Dear Reader??? Why? It felt odd at the time but it wasn’t until I thought of Dear Reader as chapter 1 of Midnights that things started to click.
But that is not all that stands out about the SN TV announcement.
And the lump in my throat expands to a quivering whisper
That is a really good description of what the moment before coming out feels like. Just saying.
With my spidey sense tingling on high alert, I then found a SN TV coming out theory by u/throw_ra878 from last year.
Part of that theory centred around some connections made through another analysis by u/throw_ra878. That post pointed out that the font used for the SN title on Taylor’s website, is the same font used in the Paris lyric video.
To be specific, with these lyrics:
Confess my truth in
Swooping Sloping Cursive Letters.
🤯
It made sense at the time to then theorize that Taylor was ready to come out with SN TV.
But, seeing as that didn’t happen, what could that connection be?
And that’s when the dominos cascaded in a line.
Especially when Taylor just posted a teaser trailer for the eras tour with the caption "A fortnight til Paris 🤍"
🤯
I don’t think she is going to make an official coming out announcement in Paris. But, I do believe that she is going to do something that continues the momentum that a lot of us are seeing towards Taylor coming out to the public in a way that she initially wanted to do in 2019.
To close, I want to point out that Taylor is playing across Europe starting in May and finishing that part of her tour at the end of August. Timing wise, if she was to make a move that could be controversial, she wouldn’t have to face any consequences back home for months.
🤡 I’m ready to be hurt again 🤡

2024.04.26 03:29 ray_poopoo What is this Kanji??

What is this Kanji??
My dad got me this banner for my birthday. The store let him type one word to put on the banner and he chose “honorable”. The kanji on the banner, however doesn’t look like typical kanji and doesn’t translate using the camera so i can’t confirm what it says. My Japanese teacher says it resembles a style of writing kanji that is similar to how we write cursive english letters. maybe that’s why it wouldn’t translate. Can anyone confirm what it means?

2024.04.26 03:07 VerySpecificQuerys Help me find this lipstick!

Hi, I downloaded Reddit just to ask this but, does anyone know what the lipstick I'm looking for is called? It's a black tube with cursive(?) lettering scrawled across the side of the lid. I bought it I think within the past 5 years. On the top of the lid it has a horse made of dots (it's like dots in the shape of a horse). And one of its shades is "Havana". I have been searching the Internet for the past hour looking for this, I lost my last one and can't recall the brand. If you have any clue please share your guess in the comments. Thank you!

2024.04.25 20:35 PointRough 23NB Pseudo-Royal Poet Seeking Retinue Members

Come as you are. I ran out my medication, so I might be a little insane. I am as insufferable and pretentious as they come. I've realized this, and am now living my best life. If I've amused you thus far, shoot me a message. I am something like deposed royalty, depressed artist, living in a dilapidated apartment with my three animals and loving partner. Escape with me from the realities of the world. I can give you magic words and make your brain feel funny things. Currently seeking knights and advisors in my retinue. Will also accept ambitious peasants.
All of those are just pretty words to say: I write pretty, I like pretty things, and would love a penpal to exchange long-winded cursive letters meditating on the meaning of life, glittering washi tape, and Lovecraft stickers. Rather than putting all my information out here, I'd actually like to know you better through Direct Message. We can discover each other's passions and interests.
I'm actually not that insufferable. Tell me a favourite poem/fairytale of yours!

2024.04.25 16:33 Heartfeltzero Community Poll: Were you taught Cursive in School?

I’ve noticed that having difficulty reading cursive has been a topic of debate for a lot of folks here. Many being surprised that some have trouble reading cursive. I myself, having graduated high school in 2017, was not taught cursive throughout all of my schooling. I did take the time to learn and teach myself to read cursive since then as I spend a large amount of time transcribing old letters as a hobby, so it was a requirement for me. But it made me wonder how many others here may not have been taught cursive in school. I’m really curious to see the results. Feel free to have some respectful discussions about in down in the comments.

2024.04.25 16:17 No_Satisfaction_5649 Vintage Esterbrook SJ hard starting a bit

Picked up a vintage Esterbrook SJ (copper) and have been absolutely loving it. Pen fitted with a new sac locally before purchase. 9550 EF nib. Quickly becoming my favorite pocket pen. I write noticeably better with it, looks beautiful, good pocket size. HOWEVER.. I left it in my pen cup for 1 or 2 days to rotate some other pens in. Grabbed it this morning and it took a good 5-6 small cursive letters on Clairefontaine to write consistent and wet. When the nib was first put in the tines were super tight. We spread them a hair, about .015-.02. Less at the tipping. Is this sort of the nature of the beast with the vintage esties? Or is there something I can do to help it stay wet? Spread the tips more and leave the tines .015-.020? Ink is Robert Oster - Caffe Crema because copper :)

2024.04.25 14:13 alexandrze14 Do people in your country usually use or understand cursive writing in languages that use the Latin alphabet? I need it for signing postcards.

Hey everyone! My handwriting in languages that use Latin alphabet is mostly cursive with random letters looking like print and having spaces between letters within one word. But still, it looks mostly like cursive.
I usually write in print (which looks rather sloppy imo) when signing postcards to Japan, China, and sometimes India. It would be a good idea to know where people don't have trouble understanding cursive writing in languages that use the Latin alphabet and where people are less likely to understand your handwriting unless it's print.
An example of my handwriting in English and Spanish (both foreign languages to me but I'm quite decent at them)

Hey everyone! I do postcrossing (exchange of real postcards around the world with the help of special websites and apps) and my handwriting in languages that use Latin alphabet is mostly cursive with random letters looking like print and having spaces between letters within one word. But still, it looks mostly like cursive.

As for age groups, they are absolutely different. If it's Europe and the Americas, it's usually people in their 50s, 60s etc, in Asia and Russia, users tend to be younger, like in their 20s and 30s but that's not a rule. Sometimes you draw kids' and teenagers' addresses.

I'm not a stamp collector but I have lots of older stamps and looking for others who like to post letters with older stamps - got to use them up somehow since they're really only worth face value.
Not looking for long discussions of poetry, politics, or family - just interesting tidbits about communication methods that have fallen out of fashion - postal mail, cursive writing, fountain pens, postcards, etc.
Mostly this is just an excuse to use my fountain pens and check out some of the random unused stamps I've picked up over the years as I stick them to envelopes.
