So this is a post I made in the Classic Fallout subreddit, but it was immediately removed by the moderators. I fail to see how it broke any of the subreddit's rules, since I've presented my points in a clear and respectful manner, so I'm posting it here. I reckon this community is probably more open for discussion than that one. Moderators, if you find any issues with the post, warn me so I can make proper adjustments, but please don't outright remove it.

So on September of last year I've finished Fallout 1 for the first time and posted a review here. I was absolutely amused by it. Absolute masterpiece.
After procrastinating for months, I finally decided to actually play Fallout 2 (with the Unofficial Patch installed), and finished it last week after 81.7 hours. This is gonna be my "review" of the game.
Things I liked
So, starting with the things I liked about the game: the UI is much improved over Fallout 1, being more intuitive. From the "take all" button, to not being able to loot corpses with no items, to having more digits on the barter menu, to not needing to click again on your destination after a random encounter in the world map, the game feels much better to play and has aged better as well. I'm still of the opinion that both games aged pretty well, considering they're from the 90s, but Fallout 2 certainly has the edge.
I really enjoyed how they improved companion interaction. From dialogue, to inventory management, as well as combat control, it's undeniable that companions are orders of magnitude superior in Fallout 2. Also, making the amount of companions you can have on your party be based on your Charisma really helps putting it to good use, as opposed to Fallout 1, where this stat was virtually useless.
Moreover, Fallout 2 has many more locations, factions, missions, weapon variety and overall content than Fallout 1. Which is great, since one of my few complaints with the first game is that it felt a bit short. Not only that, but there's generally more outcomes for quests and potential for roleplaying. Yall know much better than me about all the crazy stuff you can do in New Reno, for example.
Also, THE HIGHWAYMAN IS SO FREAKING AWESOME I LOVE IT.
Now, to the stuff I didn't like...
The early game just sucks
The Temple of Trials, as well as the first 2-3 hours of the game are really hard to bear. The game kinda forces you into a melee build, otherwise your chance to hit is gonna be too low, turning it into a very frustrating experience. It totally undermines your choices on character builds. Fallout 1, on the other hand, starts you with a knife and a Colt 6520, which encompasses both melee and ranged.
Not only that, but it feels like it's too long before you can get your hands on an actual firearm in this game, since you are broke at early levels and item prices are quite steep, and there doesn't seem to be many lootable guns available early on. I've tagged Melee Weapons, and despite not using them for 95% of the game, I don't regret this choice, because it made the early game much more enjoyable.
Honestly, the Temple of Trials should have been designed in a different way, with many more options on how to tackle it based on your character's abilities, or just outright removed, to be very honest. I've watched a video from Tim Cain where he said it was originally supposed to optional, as you'd be able to convince the other tribal to skip it. Too bad it wasn't the case.
The story is just not as interesting as Fallout 1's story
To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the concept of being a tribal, but I rolled with it. The thing is that overall the plot didn't have me as engaged as Fallout 1's. I did not care as much about Arroyo as I cared about Vault 13. I also didn't really feel like "The Chosen One".
Multiple times I felt dissatisfied with the dialogue options. They tended to be a little too "extreme" for my taste. You either have to act all sassy or like a very naive person, with not many options in between. I didn't have this problem with Fallout 1, as there were always very honest, straight-forward, level headed dialogue options available. I had an 8 Intelligence in Fallout 2, just like in Fallout 1, but the first game conveyed much better the idea of my character being smart in dialogue.
The world seems a bit disjointed, and not as cohesive as Fallout 1's world. It's very hit or miss, really. In one hand, there are very interesting locations, such as Vault City and New Reno, but other locations honestly feel weird and out place, such as San Francisco, with the Shi Vs. The Hubologists. Not only that, but it seems that the more south you go, the more "incomplete" the game feels. The NCR feels specially underdeveloped: I did two missions for Tandy, prevented a guy from blowing himself up on the power generator and freed the slaves to join the NCR, but even months after joining them. there were no missions for me, as Elise would say something like "Well, there's nothing for you to do, as I'm just reporting to the NCR that you are now a member". I assume that's a byproduct of cut content, as I heard apparently 1/4 of the content was cut.
The Brotherhood feels specially weird not well developed in this game. They have two bases with literally nothing in them, aside from generic NPCs, and one with some great gear and a super computer that can improve your stats. And that's it. There's no apparent explanation for them to know your name and even know about "The Prophecy of The Chosen One", as is suggested when Matt is killed by Frank Horrigan. It seems that they only know about you to keep the player curious and incentivize them to go to key locations and move the plot forward. As you're like: "how do these guys know my name? I gotta get to their next base to find out", but when you get there and ask for answers, they say some BS like: "we know about a lot of things... Now steal the Vertibird plans for us and we'll grant you access to some powerful gear".
The Enclave, despite being a cool concept, are not as interesting and well developed as The Master.
So the game has a serious problem with tone. It has a serious main quest and serious side quests with moral dilemmas and politics, but this is all disturbed by constant jokes, references and 4th wall breaks that completely destroy the immersion for me.
See, within the first 10 hours or so I was really, really enjoying the game. By the time I was doing the Vault City - Gecko side quest, I was convinced that the game was indeed better than Fallout 1, due to it's massive world with many quests, choices and consequences. I was like "yeah, they really doubled down on the RPG aspects of the game". The thing is that I had not experienced any 4th breaks or egregiously silly stuff yet, aside from maybe the "Rat God", but then I encountered the talking Deathclaws at Vault 13. That's what I mean by "bad lore". Seriously, I'm gonna have to call BS on that concept, no matter what justification you give me. It's just dumb. And what disappoints is that it's at Vault 13, a location I was eager and curious to see in the sequel. What could have happened to it? What could have changed in 80 years, specially after the events of the first game? ... Uh, talking Deathclaws? Well, that's certainly subverted expectations... just not in a good way. Honestly, they could have just made the Vault empty, have the GECK there to be found as normal, and leave the player curious to learn what happened, to then reveal at the end that the Enclave captured everyone.
What's strange is that only after encountering the talking Deathclaws that the 4th wall breaks started appearing to me. I don't know if this is just a coincidence, but I started getting all those silly random encounters, with the Mad Brahmins being the first one (which, coincidentally gave me the "Hope you've saved your game, cause you're dead" deathscreen right after). Do they only start appearing after you find Vault 13? Now, I've made a list of all silly/dumb/4th wall break encounters I've got.
There is room for silly stuff in Fallout, obviously. Silly/humorous stuff that didn't annoy me at all were things like the Yakuza Vs. Mobster combat encounters, the hilarious video call with the Enclave soldier, or Sargent Arch Dornan "Trooper, what are you doing here, GET BACK TO YOUR GUARD POST!!!".
In short, the game could have a very serious tone and immersive setting, just like the first one, if it wasn't for the constant breaks the developers inserted to try to give it some comic relief. The thing is that they overdone it, while Fallout 1 did humor just right: Harry and his stupidly named squad) were really funny in a way that enhanced the world building. So were the low Int dialogue options. Thankfully Obsidian came up with Wild Wasteland for New Vegas, which solved this issue. I wish Fallout 2 had a similar feature, so people can choose if they want to enable all the silly stuff or play a more serious game. Do you guys know of any mod that does this?
Some mild annoyances
I've encountered some mild annoyances in dialogue, such as Renesco not acknowledging that I've already talked to him, making it so everyime I interacted with him my only dialogue options would be to either introduce myself or say "I think I'm at the wrong place, bye" and leave, even though we've already met. Also, when I first talked to Tandy, she responded me with "What?" and my only dialogue option would be to tell her I had solved the Vault 15 situation, only to end conversation and then having to talk to her again so introduce myself. I suppose this can happen if you deal with the New Khans at Vault 15 before talking to Tandy for the first time, which I did. The game has some weird dialogue oversights/bugs like this that I think are valid to point out. I didn't encounter issues like this in Fallout 1.
Also, in the end-game slides, there was contradiction between the Gecko's and Vault City's slides. It was said that Vault City's isolationsm made them stagnate and be absorbed by the NCR, while at the same time saying that Gecko's power plant optmizations helped Vault City expand, and that they let their xenophobia aside and a new era of cooperation between ghouls and humans started.
The end-game slides said that I wiped the Deathclaws at Vault 13, when was actually the Enclave that did this. Weird.
The game has only 13 Talking Heads. Now that's a bummer, specially considering that Fallout 1 had 21. It's even more noticable when you take into account that Fallout 2 has many more NPCs overall, so there are actually far more "Talking Heads per capita" in the first game than in the second, and it shows. Now, that's probably because they've made this game within less than a year IIRC, so I won't blame them. Fallout 1 was also supposed to have many more talking heads.
Now, these are some mild annoyances that don't take much away from the experience, but I felt were valid to point out.
Conclusion
Now, this long wall of text probably made it seem I disliked the game, but I really didn't. It's a very good game, and an exceptional CRPG. I just think it's not on the same level as Fallout 1, solely because of it's (in my opinion) weaker story and constant breaks in immersion that aren't that funny to begin with and add nothing of substance to the experience. There are no engine optimizations, quality of life additions and gameplay and UI improvements that make up for the lack of that eerie, almost opressive, yet epic atmosphere and story the first game has. The sequel doesn't live up to the expectaions for me, so I rank it lower. Overall, 8/10.

- First of all, they don't have as good exposition as The Unity. In Fallout 1, you start not knowing about The Unity or The Master, but then you gradually put the pieces together (talking to NPCs, learning about the FEV at West Tek, reading Richard Grey's Logs, etc.) and learn about them, to then have the legendary dialogue with the Master and learn their true intent. In Fallout 2, on the other hand, you go from knowing virtually nothing about the Enclave to knowing everything about them, and that's if you actually talk to the President or that scientist. You kinda get a massive "lore dump" upon arriving the Oil Rig. For this comprasion, I'm assuming you talk to NPCs and search for logs in both playthroughs.
- Second, The Master is a much more interesting and cooler final boss than Frank Horrigan, which is just a generic though evil guy you HAVE to fight (no Speech checks or anything like that), otherwise you can't finish the game. He honestly feels like an afterthought: "well, we have to put a final boss in the game, so just roll up a BBEG with 999 HP and a cool design quickly!".
- Thirdly, you can't (and there's no reason to) join the "evil faction". In Fallout 1, you could be convinced by The Master and join his Army, getting the "evil ending". In Fallout 2, even if you wanted to, you couldn't join the Enclave, as they don't even consider you human to begin with. Now, it makes sense from a lore perspective, but it certainly removes nuance and takes away form the RPG experience, as there's only one possible ending because of that (excluding killing the Elder at Arroyo, which is much more of a gimmick ending).

2024.05.12 04:55 Lobiankk Finished Fallout 2 for the first time... and I have mixed feelings. I can't say I prefer it over Fallout 1.
So on September of last year I've finished Fallout 1 for the first time and posted a review here. I was absolutely amused by it. Absolute masterpiece.
After procrastinating for months, I finally decided to actually play Fallout 2 (with the Unofficial Patch installed), and finished it last week after 81.7 hours. This is gonna be my "review" of the game.
Things I liked
So, starting with the things I liked about the game: the UI is much improved over Fallout 1, being more intuitive. From the "take all" button, to not being able to loot corpses with no items, to having more digits on the barter menu, to not needing to click again on your destination after a random encounter in the world map, the game feels much better to play and has aged better as well. I'm still of the opinion that both games aged pretty well, considering they're from the 90s, but Fallout 2 certainly has the edge.
I really enjoyed how they improved companion interaction. From dialogue, to inventory management, as well as combat control, it's undeniable that companions are orders of magnitude superior in Fallout 2. Also, making the amount of companions you can have on your party be based on your Charisma really helps putting it to good use, as opposed to Fallout 1, where this stat was virtually useless.
Moreover, Fallout 2 has many more locations, factions, missions, weapon variety and overall content than Fallout 1. Which is great, since one of my few complaints with the first game is that it felt a bit short. Not only that, but there's generally more outcomes for quests and potential for roleplaying. Yall know much better than me about all the crazy stuff you can do in New Reno, for example.
Also, THE HIGHWAYMAN IS SO FREAKING AWESOME I LOVE IT.
Now, to the stuff I didn't like...
The early game just sucks
The Temple of Trials, as well as the first 2-3 hours of the game are really hard to bear. The game kinda forces you into a melee build, otherwise your chance to hit is gonna be too low, turning it into a very frustrating experience. It totally undermines your choices on character builds. Fallout 1, on the other hand, starts you with a knife and a Colt 6520, which encompasses both melee and ranged.
Not only that, but it feels like it's too long before you can get your hands on an actual firearm in this game, since you are broke at early levels and item prices are quite steep, and there doesn't seem to be many lootable guns available early on. I've tagged Melee Weapons, and despite not using them for 95% of the game, I don't regret this choice, because it made the early game much more enjoyable.
Honestly, the Temple of Trials should have been designed in a different way, with many more options on how to tackle it based on your character's abilities, or just outright removed, to be very honest. I've watched a video from Tim Cain where he said it was originally supposed to optional, as you'd be able to convince the other tribal to skip it. Too bad it wasn't the case.
The story is just not as interesting as Fallout 1's story
To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the concept of being a tribal, but I rolled with it. The thing is that overall the plot didn't have me as engaged as Fallout 1's. I did not care as much about Arroyo as I cared about Vault 13. I also didn't really feel like "The Chosen One".
Multiple times I felt dissatisfied with the dialogue options. They tended to be a little too "extreme" for my taste. You either have to act all sassy or like a very naive person, with not many options in between. I didn't have this problem with Fallout 1, as there were always very honest, straight-forward, level headed dialogue options available. I had an 8 Intelligence in Fallout 2, just like in Fallout 1, but the first game conveyed much better the idea of my character being smart in dialogue.
The world seems a bit disjointed, and not as cohesive as Fallout 1's world. It's very hit or miss, really. In one hand, there are very interesting locations, such as Vault City and New Reno, but other locations honestly feel weird and out place, such as San Francisco, with the Shi Vs. The Hubologists. Not only that, but it seems that the more south you go, the more "incomplete" the game feels. The NCR feels specially underdeveloped: I did two missions for Tandy, prevented a guy from blowing himself up on the power generator and freed the slaves to join the NCR, but even months after joining them. there were no missions for me, as Elise would say something like "Well, there's nothing for you to do, as I'm just reporting to the NCR that you are now a member". I assume that's a byproduct of cut content, as I heard apparently 1/4 of the content was cut.
The Brotherhood feels specially weird not well developed in this game. They have two bases with literally nothing in them, aside from generic NPCs, and one with some great gear and a super computer that can improve your stats. And that's it. There's no apparent explanation for them to know your name and even know about "The Prophecy of The Chosen One", as is suggested when Matt is killed by Frank Horrigan. It seems that they only know about you to keep the player curious and incentivize them to go to key locations and move the plot forward. As you're like: "how do these guys know my name? I gotta get to their next base to find out", but when you get there and ask for answers, they say some BS like: "we know about a lot of things... Now steal the Vertibird plans for us and we'll grant you access to some powerful gear".
The Enclave, despite being a cool concept, are not as interesting and well developed as The Master.
So the game has a serious problem with tone. It has a serious main quest and serious side quests with moral dilemmas and politics, but this is all disturbed by constant jokes, references and 4th wall breaks that completely destroy the immersion for me.
See, within the first 10 hours or so I was really, really enjoying the game. By the time I was doing the Vault City - Gecko side quest, I was convinced that the game was indeed better than Fallout 1, due to it's massive world with many quests, choices and consequences. I was like "yeah, they really doubled down on the RPG aspects of the game". The thing is that I had not experienced any 4th breaks or egregiously silly stuff yet, aside from maybe the "Rat God", but then I encountered the talking Deathclaws at Vault 13. That's what I mean by "bad lore". Seriously, I'm gonna have to call BS on that concept, no matter what justification you give me. It's just dumb. And what disappoints is that it's at Vault 13, a location I was eager and curious to see in the sequel. What could have happened to it? What could have changed in 80 years, specially after the events of the first game? ... Uh, talking Deathclaws? Well, that's certainly subverted expectations... just not in a good way. Honestly, they could have just made the Vault empty, have the GECK there to be found as normal, and leave the player curious to learn what happened, to then reveal at the end that the Enclave captured everyone.
What's strange is that only after encountering the talking Deathclaws that the 4th wall breaks started appearing to me. I don't know if this is just a coincidence, but I started getting all those silly random encounters, with the Mad Brahmins being the first one (which, coincidentally gave me the "Hope you've saved your game, cause you're dead" deathscreen right after). Do they only start appearing after you find Vault 13? Now, I've made a list of all silly/dumb/4th wall break encounters I've got.
There is room for silly stuff in Fallout, obviously. Silly/humorous stuff that didn't annoy me at all were things like the Yakuza Vs. Mobster combat encounters, the hilarious video call with the Enclave soldier, or Sargent Arch Dornan "Trooper, what are you doing here, GET BACK TO YOUR GUARD POST!!!".
In short, the game could have a very serious tone and immersive setting, just like the first one, if it wasn't for the constant breaks the developers inserted to try to give it some comic relief. The thing is that they overdone it, while Fallout 1 did humor just right: Harry and his stupidly named squad) were really funny in a way that enhanced the world building. So were the low Int dialogue options. Thankfully Obsidian came up with Wild Wasteland for New Vegas, which solved this issue. I wish Fallout 2 had a similar feature, so people can choose if they want to enable all the silly stuff or play a more serious game. Do you guys know of any mod that does this?
Some mild annoyances
I've encountered some mild annoyances in dialogue, such as Renesco not acknowledging that I've already talked to him, making it so everyime I interacted with him my only dialogue options would be to either introduce myself or say "I think I'm at the wrong place, bye" and leave, even though we've already met. Also, when I first talked to Tandy, she responded me with "What?" and my only dialogue option would be to tell her I had solved the Vault 15 situation, only to end conversation and then having to talk to her again so introduce myself. I suppose this can happen if you deal with the New Khans at Vault 15 before talking to Tandy for the first time, which I did. The game has some weird dialogue oversights/bugs like this that I think are valid to point out. I didn't encounter issues like this in Fallout 1.
Also, in the end-game slides, there was contradiction between the Gecko's and Vault City's slides. It was said that Vault City's isolationsm made them stagnate and be absorbed by the NCR, while at the same time saying that Gecko's power plant optmizations helped Vault City expand, and that they let their xenophobia aside and a new era of cooperation between ghouls and humans started.
The end-game slides said that I wiped the Deathclaws at Vault 13, when was actually the Enclave that did this. Weird.
The game has only 13 Talking Heads. Now that's a bummer, specially considering that Fallout 1 had 21. It's even more noticable when you take into account that Fallout 2 has many more NPCs overall, so there are actually far more "Talking Heads per capita" in the first game than in the second, and it shows. Now, that's probably because they've made this game within less than a year IIRC, so I won't blame them. Fallout 1 was also supposed to have many more talking heads.
Now, these are some mild annoyances that don't take much away from the experience, but I felt were valid to point out.
Conclusion
Now, this long wall of text probably made it seem I disliked the game, but I really didn't. It's a very good game, and an exceptional CRPG. I just think it's not on the same level as Fallout 1, solely because of it's (in my opinion) weaker story and constant breaks in immersion that aren't that funny to begin with and add nothing of substance to the experience. There are no engine optimizations, quality of life additions and gameplay and UI improvements that make up for the lack of that eerie, almost opressive, yet epic atmosphere and story the first game has. The sequel doesn't live up to the expectaions for me, so I rank it lower. Overall, 8/10.

- First of all, they don't have as good exposition as The Unity. In Fallout 1, you start not knowing about The Unity or The Master, but then you gradually put the pieces together (talking to NPCs, learning about the FEV at West Tek, reading Richard Grey's Logs, etc.) and learn about them, to then have the legendary dialogue with the Master and learn their true intent. In Fallout 2, on the other hand, you go from knowing virtually nothing about the Enclave to knowing everything about them, and that's if you actually talk to the President or that scientist. You kinda get a massive "lore dump" upon arriving the Oil Rig. For this comprasion, I'm assuming you talk to NPCs and search for logs in both playthroughs.
- Second, The Master is a much more interesting and cooler final boss than Frank Horrigan, which is just a generic though evil guy you HAVE to fight (no Speech checks or anything like that), otherwise you can't finish the game. He honestly feels like an afterthought: "well, we have to put a final boss in the game, so just roll up a BBEG with 999 HP and a cool design quickly!".
- Thirdly, you can't (and there's no reason to) join the "evil faction". In Fallout 1, you could be convinced by The Master and join his Army, getting the "evil ending". In Fallout 2, even if you wanted to, you couldn't join the Enclave, as they don't even consider you human to begin with. Now, it makes sense from a lore perspective, but it certainly removes nuance and takes away form the RPG experience, as there's only one possible ending because of that (excluding killing the Elder at Arroyo, which is much more of a gimmick ending).
So the game has a serious problem with tone. It has a serious main quest and serious side quests with moral dilemmas and politics, but this is all disturbed by constant jokes, references and 4th wall breaks that completely destroy the immersion for me.
See, within the first 10 hours or so I was really, really enjoying the game. By the time I was doing the Vault City - Gecko side quest, I was convinced that the game was indeed better than Fallout 1, due to it's massive world with many quests, choices and consequences. I was like "yeah, they really doubled down on the RPG aspects of the game". The thing is that I had not experienced any 4th breaks or egregiously silly stuff yet, aside from maybe the "Rat God", but then I encountered the talking Deathclaws at Vault 13. That's what I mean by "bad lore". Seriously, I'm gonna have to call BS on that concept, no matter what justification you give me. It's just dumb. And what disappoints is that it's at Vault 13, a location I was eager and curious to see in the sequel. What could have happened to it? What could have changed in 80 years, specially after the events of the first game? ... Uh, talking Deathclaws? Well, that's certainly subverted expectations... just not in a good way. Honestly, they could have just made the Vault empty, have the GECK there to be found as normal, and leave the player curious to learn what happened, to then reveal at the end that the Enclave captured everyone.
What's strange is that only after encountering the talking Deathclaws that the 4th wall breaks started appearing to me. I don't know if this is just a coincidence, but I started getting all those silly random encounters, with the Mad Brahmins being the first one (which, coincidentally gave me the "Hope you've saved your game, cause you're dead" deathscreen right after). Do they only start appearing after you find Vault 13? Now, I've made a list of all silly/dumb/4th wall break encounters I've got.
- Mad Brahmins: Just dumb.
- Bridge Keeper: Arguably one of the most egregious ones, and I got his one like four times throughout the playthrough.
- Sacred head of the Vault Dweller: Not gonna lie, that was actually kinda funny, though very immersion breaking.
- Café of Broken Dreams: Bruh.
- Guardian of Forever: That one was really, really idiotic.
There is room for silly stuff in Fallout, obviously. Silly/humorous stuff that didn't annoy me at all were things like the Yakuza Vs. Mobster combat encounters, the hilarious video call with the Enclave soldier, or Sargent Arch Dornan "Trooper, what are you doing here, GET BACK TO YOUR GUARD POST!!!".
In short, the game could have a very serious tone and immersive setting, just like the first one, if it wasn't for the constant breaks the developers inserted to try to give it some comic relief. The thing is that they overdone it, while Fallout 1 did humor just right: Harry and his stupidly named squad) were really funny in a way that enhanced the world building. So were the low Int dialogue options. Thankfully Obsidian came up with Wild Wasteland for New Vegas, which solved this issue. I wish Fallout 2 had a similar feature, so people can choose if they want to enable all the silly stuff or play a more serious game. Do you guys know of any mod that does this?
Some mild annoyances
I've encountered some mild annoyances in dialogue, such as Renesco not acknowledging that I've already talked to him, making it so everyime I interacted with him my only dialogue options would be to either introduce myself or say "I think I'm at the wrong place, bye" and leave, even though we've already met. Also, when I first talked to Tandy, she responded me with "What?" and my only dialogue option would be to tell her I had solved the Vault 15 situation, only to end conversation and then having to talk to her again so introduce myself. I suppose this can happen if you deal with the New Khans at Vault 15 before talking to Tandy for the first time, which I did. The game has some weird dialogue oversights/bugs like this that I think are valid to point out. I didn't encounter issues like this in Fallout 1.
Also, in the end-game slides, there was contradiction between the Gecko's and Vault City's slides. It was said that Vault City's isolationsm made them stagnate and be absorbed by the NCR, while at the same time saying that Gecko's power plant optmizations helped Vault City expand, and that they let their xenophobia aside and a new era of cooperation between ghouls and humans started.
The end-game slides said that I wiped the Deathclaws at Vault 13, when was actually the Enclave that did this. Weird.
The game has only 13 Talking Heads. Now that's a bummer, specially considering that Fallout 1 had 21. It's even more noticable when you take into account that Fallout 2 has many more NPCs overall, so there are actually far more "Talking Heads per capita" in the first game than in the second, and it shows. Now, that's probably because they've made this game within less than a year IIRC, so I won't blame them. Fallout 1 was also supposed to have many more talking heads.
Now, these are some mild annoyances that don't take much away from the experience, but I felt were valid to point out.
Conclusion
Now, this long wall of text probably made it seem I disliked the game, but I really didn't. It's a very good game, and an exceptional CRPG. I just think it's not on the same level as Fallout 1, solely because of it's (in my opinion) weaker story and constant breaks in immersion that aren't that funny to begin with and add nothing of substance to the experience. There are no engine optimizations, quality of life additions and gameplay and UI improvements that make up for the lack of that eerie, almost opressive, yet epic atmosphere and story the first game has. The sequel doesn't live up to the expectaions for me, so I rank it lower. Overall, 8/10.

I have returned to OnePlus after around 3 years, the last OnePlus phone I had was the Nord, and after only finding a few detailed reviews here, I thought I'd write one of my own to help any new potential buyers.
I bought an open box unused Oneplus Nord 3 8 GB/128 GB a week ago for €250. I had avoided OnePlus for a long time because of OOS merging with ColorOS. When I first used OOS with the OP3 I was blown away by it, and it was my favorite skin on Android, merging with ColorOS just drove me away because to me it was the entire opposite of OOS, filled with extra bells and whistles that added little to no value to the software experience and an unnecessary makeover of a well functioning skill.
Why did I get a OnePlus Nord 3 with Color OS right now then? Well, because of the price. At €250 it was the best value for a new device in terms of specs and software support.
In the past 3 months, I have used One UI, Pixel Experience, Nothing OS, and IOS. One UI and iPhone were work phones so I feel like I can give a good overall view as to how this phone performs.
What do I like about it?
Design:
The phone is very well designed. It has Gorilla Glass 5 on the back, with plastic rails on the sides. It is thinner than the average smartphone at 8.2mm, the industry average is 8.93mm. The rounded edges and narrow design give it a great feel in the hand. I prefer the stealthy look of the grey over the gloss finish of the green.
Screen:
120Hz Amoled HDR10+ - what more I can say? The screen is amazing, the colors are vibrant, and the brightness is plenty good for outdoor visibility under the sun (much better than an iPhone 11 or Nothing Phone 1). Additionally, you can adjust the refresh rate for each app if needed which is a nice customization and battery-saving feature. Just a really solid experience overall.
Fingerprint/Face Unlock:
Fingerprint is reliable and fast. I haven't had it fail to read my fingerprint once, it's fast to unlock with smooth animations. Very similar to Nothing Phone 1 but I think a little faster and way more faster and reliable than my S23. Face Unlock has the little neat feature of showing sensitive notification content on the lock screen when it's unlocked, similar to Face ID on IOS. No complaints.
Media:
Great overall media experience. The speakers lack a little bit of bass but are plenty loud and don't crack at high volumes. Much better than the Nothing Phones, which just sound terrible and hollow.
Camera:
Decent camera. Has more detail and better contrast than the Nothing Phone 1 and iPhone 11. Does well with outdoor lighting but there is over-sharpening with photos especially if you zoom in. Night mode is all pretty good, something I did not expect. Good detail, low noise, and less over-sharpening at night. At this price, I am not expecting a world-class camera but it is one of the better ones in this price range in my opinion.
Battery Life:
Reliable battery life. Any phone that I have I only need to last a day because I will be plugging it in a night to be ready for the next. I easily get a day of battery life out of it. My day starts at 7:30 am and I need to plug it in by around 10 pm with 10-20% left. I do not play any games. I watch YouTube, browse Reddit and the web, stream Spotify, chat, use maps heavily, and take a couple of photos. I would say that I am a slightly heavy user but not in the gaming sense.
OxygenOS:
There are things I like about OOS and things I hate. Let's start with the positives.

Nord 3 is a decent mid-range phone if you're under a tight budget and want something that just is kind of like a jack of all trades in its price segment. Nothing OS definitely, provides a better, more reliable software experience because it is so close to stock and Nothing is very quick to adapt to user feedback. However, it comes with a worse camera in my opinion, and feels a little bland. If you want an even more close to stock Android experience and wireless charging there is the Motorola Edge 40 which can be a good deal on a discount.
Overall, I am adequately satisfied with my Nord 3, it gets the basics done and leaves me with an extra €750 in the bank. Oxygen OS is not as glorious or stable as it used to be but the unique features it has give me enough to make do with it for now. If they can optimize it further and make it less annoying it'll be a game changer but I know thats asking too much.

- Screen off gestures to access apps/actions by just drawing a letter - This feature saves me a lot of time when I know exactly what I wanna do before I unlock my phone. For example - being able to just draw a letter with the screen off and call my wife makes the entire experience seamless and quick.
- Floating windows when sharing media - whenever I want to share a link or screenshot to WhatsApp it opens up in a nice little floating window, I can quickly send it to whoever and get back to what I was doing. I don't have to exit the chat, close WhatsApp, and then go back to the original app I was in.
- Global search - Simple but essential. Allows me to search for any app/contact or download any app directly from the search page. I just wish it was a bit faster opening up.
OxygenOS:
- Home screen customization sucks - It sucks. Idk why but the widgets occupy more space than needed (looking at you OP Clock Widget), and the ones that occupy the right amount of space have this weird width limitation. I can not get my Google Calendar widget to span across the entire width of the screen which makes the widget with smaller fonts and less information displayed. Some widgets don't even show up with rounded corners, they are weirdly cut off and partially rounded, I never experienced it on One UI and Nothing OS. For some reason, OOS just has this predefined max-width in its head that it wants to apply to all widgets like a dictator. Fun fact it's kind of similar to IOS which gives you predefined widget sizes and you can only choose the sizes they have but they make sense.
- Whatsapp Notifications - For some odd reason I will see the name of the sender two times when getting a notification. It will not be 'Alex Jones: Hi', it will be 'Alex Jones: Alex Jones: Hi'. It's like Alex Jones sent a message through an identical twin with the same name. It's such a small thing to fix and so annoying.
- Slower Performance - On several occasions, when I pick up my phone in the morning. It feels slower than usual. I think this is because while in deep sleep they have this sleep standby optimization so it takes a little while for it to return to normal but it is not choppy or laggy by any means.
- One last thing - While this phone is plenty fast in most situations, do expect some frame drops here and there. The MediaTek 9000 is a plenty powerful chip but I don't think OOS is fully optimized for it. Scrolling through Reddit is a choppy experience (it is set to 120hz) now this could just be a Reddit app issue because FB runs just fine but don't expect a lag free/smooth experience all the time. It is Android, after all.

I have FA507NU recently bought 3 weeks ago.
A short rant, I hate the lid cover. It is the jaeger gray variant with that TUF Gaming, This is a class vii armor suit yada yada written on the top lid.
Anyway, for the USB C configuration, the USB C closer to the AC plug is indeed USB 4 with display port. Tested with eGPU, razer chroma (non RGB) works fine. I haven't tested the data rate, because I don't know how to find the info. In Device Manager however I found USB 4 host controller and thunderbolt 3. This port does not support PD.
The USB C closer to the 3.5 audio jack does not support display. It is support PD. In my testing, i noticed a weird behavior. The device would start charging (trickle charging) every time the battery drop, causing a 10s charging, switch to discharging loop. I guess it is due to this port only charge the battery. It is not like the Power Supply DC adapter which the laptop could run only using the power supply and the battery sit idle.
Another thing to report, I noticed something different from what most reviewers i have read or watch. My device comes with Realtek Wifi card not Mediatek (checked from the drivers installed on device manager).

This is meant to be a review on what the rifle could be if corrected. With that being said there are parts that I could not replace due to proprietary parts.

I have over 2000+ rounds through it mostly suppressed (Silencer co Omega 36m) . Various ammo as follows
M80 ball, AAC 168Gr OTM, AAC 175gr OTM, AAC 168gr SMK, AAC, 175Gr SMKFEDERAL 175gr SMK, Federal 168gr SMK, AAC 150gr FMJ
Ranges were from 25yard to 800yards in variable wind conditions highest being 18mph lowest being 4mph
Had issues with m80 ball right off the start trying to get through the 200 round break in procedure but after about 80 rounds it was running fine after tuning the gas block. After that .308 was run exclusively through the rifle and has no issues until around 170 rounds and it had a failure to feed. Reason was it was dirty from being suppressed no big surprise there. A quick wipe down and it was back in business and finished off the 200round set
Next day ran another 200 rounds through it after cleaning it and had 0 issues however no suppressor was used this time but was still pretty dirty and I had to tighten the Castle nut it came with as it was becoming loose.
At 100 yards Im shooting 1 MOA or better in minimal wind.
400Round checkpoint
fast forward to the next weekend and I was demoing the gun to others interested at the range and shot 600 rounds in 2 days at a 600 yard range. performed very well other than once again having to tighten the castle nut. Brief cleaning performed every 200 rounds to prevent feeding and extracting issues. Suppressors can be very very dirty especially .308
At 600 yards it performed better than expected ringing 8inch gongs at 600 yards. Not as good as a match barrel would obviously but still decent. After the barrel heated up it still did not experience much shift. Important to note the temps were in mid 50s.
At this point I decided to do a deep clean and inspect the BCG and chamber for wear and replace the back plate so I wouldn’t have to tighten it as often. BCG has signs of wear on the BCG below gas key but nothing concerning and the bolt lugs still look good.
Another 400 rounds go by no problems to report Cleaned and noted slightly more wear on bcg but still nothing to be concerned about.
Last day test (today)
After firing around 250 rounds I started to get short stroking and what seemed like gassing issues. I checked gas block placement and it was ok. Upon checking the BCG I found the Gas Key had started to become loose as I could wiggle it. I tightened it back down and staked it a bit more and it performed perfectly the rest of the way apart from failures due to carbon buildup. Total of 750ish rounds in 12 hours. Tested 100 yard groupings and got around a 1.35” grouping. Important to note I have been heating this barrel up constantly and my shoulder is killing me.
After reinspecting the BCG the bolt lugs looked like they have some wear on them and so did the star chamber.
One thing I also forgot to mention is I was playing with different buffer weights and springs as well. For that reason I ruled out about 40 rounds for testing and evaluation as the spring and buffer are considered proprietary and gas block adjustments would need to be made

Did not try the JP springs yet but I have them on order
With gas block adjustments each was able to make it through a 20 round magazine but the lighter springs had issues when it was dirty no surprise there
Has been a blast to shoot but also interesting design. My next step is to send the barrel into mos Tek to get rechambered into 8.6 blk or possibly stick with .308 and get better accuracy out of it but at this point I haven’t decided.
My opinion is the SFAR is a Good rifle if certain parts are replaced as they have known issues and replacing the gas block and gas tube were with a superlative arms AGB was all that is needed to do it.
For a price point of $1250 the gun performs very good and reliable. With that being said I think if companies came out with better barrels and ruger put a better gas block in it there wouldn’t be a issues

At 600 yards it performed better than expected ringing 8inch gongs at 600 yards. Not as good as a match barrel would obviously but still decent. After the barrel heated up it still did not experience much shift. Important to note the temps were in mid 50s.
At this point I decided to do a deep clean and inspect the BCG and chamber for wear and replace the back plate so I wouldn’t have to tighten it as often. BCG has signs of wear on the BCG below gas key but nothing concerning and the bolt lugs still look good.
Another 400 rounds go by no problems to report Cleaned and noted slightly more wear on bcg but still nothing to be concerned about.
Last day test (today)
After firing around 250 rounds I started to get short stroking and what seemed like gassing issues. I checked gas block placement and it was ok. Upon checking the BCG I found the Gas Key had started to become loose as I could wiggle it. I tightened it back down and staked it a bit more and it performed perfectly the rest of the way apart from failures due to carbon buildup. Total of 750ish rounds in 12 hours. Tested 100 yard groupings and got around a 1.35” grouping. Important to note I have been heating this barrel up constantly and my shoulder is killing me.
After reinspecting the BCG the bolt lugs looked like they have some wear on them and so did the star chamber.
One thing I also forgot to mention is I was playing with different buffer weights and springs as well. For that reason I ruled out about 40 rounds for testing and evaluation as the spring and buffer are considered proprietary and gas block adjustments would need to be made

With gas block adjustments each was able to make it through a 20 round magazine but the lighter springs had issues when it was dirty no surprise there
Has been a blast to shoot but also interesting design. My next step is to send the barrel into mos Tek to get rechambered into 8.6 blk or possibly stick with .308 and get better accuracy out of it but at this point I haven’t decided.
My opinion is the SFAR is a Good rifle if certain parts are replaced as they have known issues and replacing the gas block and gas tube were with a superlative arms AGB was all that is needed to do it.
For a price point of $1250 the gun performs very good and reliable. With that being said I think if companies came out with better barrels and ruger put a better gas block in it there wouldn’t be a issues

This is a review of the Kingnovy PC YZ-L15-series Yoga Laptop, with Dual 10.5” Touch Screens, Intel N95, 32GB DDR4, 512GB SATA SSD. There are a number of Chinese companies making this design (it’s also available in larger display sizes), and you can find versions for sale on AliExpress, Alibaba and Amazon. This one is the Kingnovy version purchased on Amazon. For those who just want the summary here it is:
Overall, this laptop mostly does what I want it to do, and I’m happy with the purchase. If you’re looking for a very portable laptop with lots of display area to use as something other than your primary computer, this is a decent choice as it gives you much more for your money than something like a Surface Go or other comparable 10.5-11” laptops or 2-in-1s. However, buying a little-known brand laptop like this is not for everyone; you often don’t get exactly what you thought you were getting, there’s very often back and forth with sellers to make things right (though in some cases you can’t get in touch with sellers after purchase at all), and you need to be comfortable diagnosing, troubleshooting, testing, opening and fixing laptops for it to generally be a smooth/positive experience.
There are definitely things about this laptop that may be an issue for some, and I’ll highlight those below in this review so that others can figure out whether something like this is the right choice for them.
Price and Shipping Experience - The Amazon price for the configuration I bought was $386.64, though I did not pay that. The seller refunded me $21.63 and then an additional $21.32 owing to shipping delays (because these are custom manufactured and the N95 CPU was backordered, it took about 5 weeks from ordering to get to my door). I was then refunded an additional $21.33 after delivery because the laptop does not actually have the TF card slot shown in the listing for the product. Thus, the total price became $322.36. UPDATE: it was actually ~$300 since the seller refunded another $20+tax I hadn't remembered originally.
I will mention that I only found out about the shipping delays when I inquired repeatedly; the seller should’ve been upfront about them, given that a major reason I went with this particular seller was that he/she had claimed the item was in stock, and had the fastest expected delivery time. (In fact, when I purchased it, I was immediately given a DHL tracking number that turned out to have been invalid. It took multiple rounds of back and forth before I ultimately found out that not only had it not yet shipped, it had not yet been built, because of the aforementioned CPU backorder. I was not happy about this.)
1st Impressions at Unboxing - 1st impressions of the unit itself were mostly good. It was packed well, and had protective adhesive plastic not only on both displays, but also on the top and bottom of the laptop. The laptop is very light for something with two displays (1lb, 15oz) and is mostly made of metal. Fit and finish are good, with no obvious issues. I love the fact that there is a compartment on the back held by a single Phillips-head screw that allows easy access to the SSD. (More on the SSD in the Performance section of this review.) As mentioned above, though, there was no TF card slot as shown in the product listing, which did not make me happy.
Displays – The displays themselves are (surprisingly?) quite good. Each is a BOE 10.5”, 1920x1280, IPS, 60hz, with 10-point touch support but no active pen support. Brightness according to the product listing is 330 nits each, but I own many laptops and I would swear that these are *way* brighter than that. In fact, they seem on par with other laptops/tablets I own that are listed at 500 nits. Color and contrast seem excellent also and there were no stuck/hot/dead pixels.
However, there are some downsides. First, only the top display can change its orientation. Trying to put the laptop in portrait orientation for both screens results on one portrait and one landscaped display. This is not a defect as such (ie, it’s expected behavior), but it is ridiculous. While this doesn’t bother me too much (I like the vertically stacked horizontal configuration, so it’s not an issue for me) I am certain it will bother some and it definitely should have been mentioned on the product listing. Second, although Windows reports that the displays have pen support, they do not support any active pen protocol I’ve tried and can be used only with a passive stylus according to an eventual response from the seller.
Performance – My model is the N95 with 32GB RAM and a 512 SATA SSD. That configuration is admittedly odd - you usually don’t see laptops with that much RAM paired with such a small SSD. I chose it for two reasons - it was very cheap to add more RAM to the listing price, but surprisingly expensive to add SSD capacity, and I figured I would always just swap out the SSD myself anyway. I asked about building the laptop with an N97 or N100, but they were only using N95s for this model.
CPU: The N95 is an Intel 12th-gen quad-core/quad-thread chip (4 efficiency cores, no performance cores) and runs as expected. It’s a good, efficient, low-end chip that is very similar to the N100, although the N95 runs at a higher TDP than an N100 (15W vs 6W) and uses Xe-architecture with 16 Execution units (EUs), while the N100 uses Xe-architecture with 24EUs. The N95’s graphics frequency is much higher, though, at 1.2 Ghz vs 750 Mhz for the N100, which partially compensates. You can see Intel’s comparison of the two CPUs here:

RAM: Intel’s spec sheet for the N95 states that 16GB is the max that can be used. However, a quick internet search shows that many are running 32GB just fine. Every hardware report I’ve run states that the machine I have does in fact have 32GB DDR4 RAM (I haven’t opened up this laptop yet, but I’d be willing to bet it’s soldered), and I’ve also loaded AI models on this laptop that require more than 16GB RAM, and they have worked fine (though slowly because the N95 is not an AI powerhouse by any means). So, no issues but I do wish it were DDR5.
SSD: As mentioned above, the SSD is SATA, and while I haven’t benchmarked the SSD yet, speeds seem fine for a machine like this. The seller told me that the laptop can also take NVME SSDs, but I have my doubts given that the seller also told me the SSD size was 2280, and it is *clearly* a 2242). As mentioned above, it’s very easy to get to the SSD to upgrade or swap it out, and I definitely appreciate that.
Cooling: the listing for this laptop states that it has a heatsink and two copper heat pipes, which would lead you to believe it’s passively cooled, but mine definitely has a fan as well. It’s not very loud, and there is no fan whine (or coil whine for that matter), but it’s there and does its job well as the laptop doesn’t get particularly hot and doesn’t seem to throttle doing typical tasks.
Wireless: The laptop uses RealTek RTL 8821CE 802.11ac. Works fine. I haven’t had any dropouts or other issues.
Audio: The laptop has two speakers for stereo sound. The sound is not great, although it can be improved quite a bit using something like the excellent, free and open-source application FxSound. Still, there is a limit to what you can do with speakers in a package like this. Ultimately, the sound is adequate, and the volume gets loud enough for say, watching a movie, but if you’re doing any kind of demanding listening, you’re going to want to use headphones. Speaking of which…
I/O – …there is a headphone jack! I am completely against the removal of the headphone jack in consumer electronics, so I’m happy to see it included here. There are also two USB-A ports, 2 USB-C ports, mini HDMI (I wish this was full size) and a barrel port for charging. Sadly, the laptop cannot be charged by either of the USB-C ports. In 2024, this is ridiculous, and it’s especially unfortunate since the battery life is not exactly fantastic (see below). As mentioned in the Pricing section, the listing page also states that this laptop has a TF card slot, but this is an error (and is also unfortunate, since I use microSD cards to keep ~200Gb of music locally on my devices that is not available from any streaming service, as well as complete offline copies of Wikipedia and Project Gutenberg accessible through the Kiwix app).
Battery life - the laptop uses a very small 25,000mWh battery, and while that helps keep the laptop nice and light, the battery life is not great. I wouldn’t expect to get more than 3-4 hours out of it in real-world use, perhaps a little more if you’re just surfing the web or streaming movies. This isn’t an issue for me (and was expected), as I only use a product like this in short bursts of, say, 30 min to an hour or so while at a coffee shop or wherever. But I’m sure it would be an issue with many people; if you are expecting to get through the day without charging, you will almost certainly be mistaken. And remember - you can’t charge via USB-C, so such use means you’re bringing along the barrel charger (which doesn’t even have folding plugs). :(
Pre-installed Software – the laptop comes with a clean install of Windows 11 Pro with legitimate OEM license and no bloatware. The listing for the laptop again contains errors in that it specifically states in one place that it’s Win 11 Pro, and in another that it’s Win 10. Given that every render showed Win 11 it’s what I expected, but still - they need to fix their product page.
I always start fresh with laptops like this from unknown Chinese companies, so I reinstalled Windows and all of the drivers (which I received after an email request for them) and have had no issues. I’ve run a number of tests/scans and no malware is detected and nothing unusual seems to be happening.
Uses:
General Comments - the laptop runs smoothly with no real slowdowns. It feels just about on par with my Chuwi Minibook X N100 and Koosmile 8" swivel tablet w/N100. The mouse cursor moves easily between the two displays, and moving windows from one to another is easy and works perfectly. Windows can also be expanded to cover both displays but when you do this, there is a gap in your window equal to the space between the displays (that is, the text, images or whatever in your application window does not resize/reflow itself to have everything visible above and below the split). This is no different from what I’m used to with my old and trusty Microsoft Surface Duo, and you get used to it quickly, but if you’re not used to it, it can be quite annoying (and in any case, it’s unfortunate - it would be much better to have windows’ contents “aware” of the gap).
Productivity – the laptop runs Office-type applications with no issues or problems. It’s generally fast and responsive. The experience is nothing like the Intel Atom netbooks of old. I wouldn’t want to edit lots of high-res RAW photos or videos on it, but that is not why you buy a product like this. For the types of productivity tasks you’d want to do with it, it works perfectly well. I should mention that I use it on a holder designed for tablets, with both screens nearly vertical one on top of the other, using a wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse. Used this way, the displays are raised much higher than they would be in a typical laptop configuration which is great for minimizing neck strain. I’ll see if I can attach a photo to this so people can visualize what I mean.
You can also use the thing like a traditional laptop, but I don’t recommend it without using an external keyboard. Typing on a virtual keyboard sucks, and the keyboard has a habit of wanting to snap to the lower part of the upper display (it would make much more sense to have it snap to the lower part of the lower display).
Entertainment – The N95 is definitely sufficient for things like web surfing, streaming, 4k video, etc. No issues at all.
Gaming – I’ve always said that any laptop is a gaming laptop if you choose the right games for it. While you should NOT buy this laptop if your primary interest is AAA gaming, this is still capable of playing some excellent games, including 3D stuff like driving sims and first-person shooters. For example, I’ve been playing Dirt Rally, DUSK, Unreal Tournament 2004, FarSight Pinball Arcade, Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition, Counter-strike Source, Counter-strike Condition Zero, Geometry Wars Retro Evolved, Defense Grid The Awakening, all of the classic racing simulations by SimBin (ie, GT Legends, GTR Evolution, GTR2, Race 07, Race On, STCC, STCC2, WTCC 2010), Monument Valley, Balatro. In a game like DIRT Rally, I can get between 80-100 fps with some tweaking of the graphics options and at 720p (which, on a 10.5” screen still looks great).
Post-purchase Support - post-purchase support has generally been good. I’ve asked a number of technical questions and they have all been answered promptly and (with a couple of exceptions) competently. But if you’re not comfortable doing things like installing an OS, dealing with drivers, opening a laptop for possible upgrades, troubleshooting issues, etc., this is probably not the laptop for you. If something goes wrong, you can’t just send it off to your local warranty repair shop and wait a few days; at best you’re shipping this thing to China and waiting weeks to months (and for most people, realistically, you’re throwing it away and buying something else).
Overall Assessment and Recommendations - I really like this little laptop. It packs a lot of screen real estate in a very small, portable and light package and is great in short bursts and I recommend it to people who are reasonably tech savvy and want something portable like this. But it is not for everyone. The short battery life, lack of USB-C charging, no pen support, no dual vertical orientation, etc. are real downsides. (Then again, I’m unaware of any other laptop around this price with two displays at all.)
I don’t think anyone should use something like this as their primary computer, either. It’s true that the specs are in some ways much better than the other tiny laptops this thing might compete with (consider a Surface Go, for example - you’re not getting 32GB RAM and a 512GB SSD no matter how much you’re willing to pay, and although the new Gen 4 versions now come with Intel N200s, they are passively cooled and I believe have much lower power consumption, so I doubt they’d be as performant). If you do want something a little more mainstream but also tiny like this dual screened laptop or a Surface Go, I’d suggest a Chuwi Minibook X with the N100. This is an excellent little 10.5” (single display) laptop.
Ultimately, though, if I were only going to have one computer, I’d weigh performance more than portability and make another choice. Hope this review helps someone (or at least was interesting).

Wireless: The laptop uses RealTek RTL 8821CE 802.11ac. Works fine. I haven’t had any dropouts or other issues.
Audio: The laptop has two speakers for stereo sound. The sound is not great, although it can be improved quite a bit using something like the excellent, free and open-source application FxSound. Still, there is a limit to what you can do with speakers in a package like this. Ultimately, the sound is adequate, and the volume gets loud enough for say, watching a movie, but if you’re doing any kind of demanding listening, you’re going to want to use headphones. Speaking of which…
I/O – …there is a headphone jack! I am completely against the removal of the headphone jack in consumer electronics, so I’m happy to see it included here. There are also two USB-A ports, 2 USB-C ports, mini HDMI (I wish this was full size) and a barrel port for charging. Sadly, the laptop cannot be charged by either of the USB-C ports. In 2024, this is ridiculous, and it’s especially unfortunate since the battery life is not exactly fantastic (see below). As mentioned in the Pricing section, the listing page also states that this laptop has a TF card slot, but this is an error (and is also unfortunate, since I use microSD cards to keep ~200Gb of music locally on my devices that is not available from any streaming service, as well as complete offline copies of Wikipedia and Project Gutenberg accessible through the Kiwix app).
Battery life - the laptop uses a very small 25,000mWh battery, and while that helps keep the laptop nice and light, the battery life is not great. I wouldn’t expect to get more than 3-4 hours out of it in real-world use, perhaps a little more if you’re just surfing the web or streaming movies. This isn’t an issue for me (and was expected), as I only use a product like this in short bursts of, say, 30 min to an hour or so while at a coffee shop or wherever. But I’m sure it would be an issue with many people; if you are expecting to get through the day without charging, you will almost certainly be mistaken. And remember - you can’t charge via USB-C, so such use means you’re bringing along the barrel charger (which doesn’t even have folding plugs). :(
Pre-installed Software – the laptop comes with a clean install of Windows 11 Pro with legitimate OEM license and no bloatware. The listing for the laptop again contains errors in that it specifically states in one place that it’s Win 11 Pro, and in another that it’s Win 10. Given that every render showed Win 11 it’s what I expected, but still - they need to fix their product page.
I always start fresh with laptops like this from unknown Chinese companies, so I reinstalled Windows and all of the drivers (which I received after an email request for them) and have had no issues. I’ve run a number of tests/scans and no malware is detected and nothing unusual seems to be happening.
Uses:
General Comments - the laptop runs smoothly with no real slowdowns. It feels just about on par with my Chuwi Minibook X N100 and Koosmile 8" swivel tablet w/N100. The mouse cursor moves easily between the two displays, and moving windows from one to another is easy and works perfectly. Windows can also be expanded to cover both displays but when you do this, there is a gap in your window equal to the space between the displays (that is, the text, images or whatever in your application window does not resize/reflow itself to have everything visible above and below the split). This is no different from what I’m used to with my old and trusty Microsoft Surface Duo, and you get used to it quickly, but if you’re not used to it, it can be quite annoying (and in any case, it’s unfortunate - it would be much better to have windows’ contents “aware” of the gap).
Productivity – the laptop runs Office-type applications with no issues or problems. It’s generally fast and responsive. The experience is nothing like the Intel Atom netbooks of old. I wouldn’t want to edit lots of high-res RAW photos or videos on it, but that is not why you buy a product like this. For the types of productivity tasks you’d want to do with it, it works perfectly well. I should mention that I use it on a holder designed for tablets, with both screens nearly vertical one on top of the other, using a wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse. Used this way, the displays are raised much higher than they would be in a typical laptop configuration which is great for minimizing neck strain. I’ll see if I can attach a photo to this so people can visualize what I mean.
You can also use the thing like a traditional laptop, but I don’t recommend it without using an external keyboard. Typing on a virtual keyboard sucks, and the keyboard has a habit of wanting to snap to the lower part of the upper display (it would make much more sense to have it snap to the lower part of the lower display).
Entertainment – The N95 is definitely sufficient for things like web surfing, streaming, 4k video, etc. No issues at all.
Gaming – I’ve always said that any laptop is a gaming laptop if you choose the right games for it. While you should NOT buy this laptop if your primary interest is AAA gaming, this is still capable of playing some excellent games, including 3D stuff like driving sims and first-person shooters. For example, I’ve been playing Dirt Rally, DUSK, Unreal Tournament 2004, FarSight Pinball Arcade, Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition, Counter-strike Source, Counter-strike Condition Zero, Geometry Wars Retro Evolved, Defense Grid The Awakening, all of the classic racing simulations by SimBin (ie, GT Legends, GTR Evolution, GTR2, Race 07, Race On, STCC, STCC2, WTCC 2010), Monument Valley, Balatro. In a game like DIRT Rally, I can get between 80-100 fps with some tweaking of the graphics options and at 720p (which, on a 10.5” screen still looks great).
Post-purchase Support - post-purchase support has generally been good. I’ve asked a number of technical questions and they have all been answered promptly and (with a couple of exceptions) competently. But if you’re not comfortable doing things like installing an OS, dealing with drivers, opening a laptop for possible upgrades, troubleshooting issues, etc., this is probably not the laptop for you. If something goes wrong, you can’t just send it off to your local warranty repair shop and wait a few days; at best you’re shipping this thing to China and waiting weeks to months (and for most people, realistically, you’re throwing it away and buying something else).
Overall Assessment and Recommendations - I really like this little laptop. It packs a lot of screen real estate in a very small, portable and light package and is great in short bursts and I recommend it to people who are reasonably tech savvy and want something portable like this. But it is not for everyone. The short battery life, lack of USB-C charging, no pen support, no dual vertical orientation, etc. are real downsides. (Then again, I’m unaware of any other laptop around this price with two displays at all.)
I don’t think anyone should use something like this as their primary computer, either. It’s true that the specs are in some ways much better than the other tiny laptops this thing might compete with (consider a Surface Go, for example - you’re not getting 32GB RAM and a 512GB SSD no matter how much you’re willing to pay, and although the new Gen 4 versions now come with Intel N200s, they are passively cooled and I believe have much lower power consumption, so I doubt they’d be as performant). If you do want something a little more mainstream but also tiny like this dual screened laptop or a Surface Go, I’d suggest a Chuwi Minibook X with the N100. This is an excellent little 10.5” (single display) laptop.
Ultimately, though, if I were only going to have one computer, I’d weigh performance more than portability and make another choice. Hope this review helps someone (or at least was interesting).
