I was friends with a girl a couple years ago and she has bpd. I stopped talking to her bc there was a lot of issues with her back then. She lived with me and her girlfriend. She would always try to kill herself in front of me and guess what I had to stop her from doing that. I’m sorry to those who suffer from this disorder it seems to be one of the hardest to live with. Anyway, she tried contacting me with 2 different apps and I never answered. She "apologized" on snapchat but I never replied. Tbh I don’t think she’s aware of the things she put me through… I’d have to go to work and call hetxt her constantly to make sure that she’s ok. Even if her gf was back at my place with her I still couldn’t count on her gf to watch her. I met her in high school years ago and we stayed friends even after school was over. She had some narcissist traits I would say and it was very hard for me to believe her sometimes… She used to kind of make me feel bad by saying oh u didn’t answer my call and I wanted to kill myself. Like I wasn’t allowed to breathe without having to worry about her. I had my own sh*t to deal with but to her since I wasn’t trying to kill myself I was fine. It’s almost like I wasn’t allowed to not be ok just bc she was doing way worse than me. My sister also has bpd (were not actually related by blood her mom is dating my dad and we grew up together) It’s difficult for me to understand them. I try to educate myself by reading a lot of stuff online about mental health etc.. Does anyone know the differences between avpd and bpd? About two years ago, I was in contact with a woman who wanted to write a book titled “Strong Daughters Of Bad Mothers”. She wanted to publicize both her own story and the stories of other women who were willing to share. So she made an online post and received quite a bit of backlash. Because of the term "Bad Mothers". The thread that developed was interesting, but also quite exhausting because of the obvious tunnel vision of some of the commenters. Rather than getting caught up in this useless discussion, I decided to write an article in support of her.
My mother died a few years ago, but being estranged from her years before her death, I know all the struggles someone goes through. I thought maybe, some of you might find my article helpful as well. Sorry, if the wording is a litttle off at times, I had to translate it for this sub. So here it goes:
MEASURABLE SUCCESS / FAILURE IN PARENTING?
So far I haven’t been blessed with the task of being a mother. From my own experience, I can only say what I wouldn’t ever want my child to have to deal with. But could I ever be competent enough to provide at least everything that seems important to me? Love and appreciation without expecting anything in return? The ability to love and care for themselves? Encouragement through weaknesses and promotion of strengths?
At what point does one become "bad" at parenting? Is there a scale? A scale that goes from “total neglect” = “terrible” to “raising a child to be a superhero” = “perfect”? ​​I hardly think so. And why is that? Because of human failure. There are no special categories for that. Though we feel most comfortable when we can put everything in its drawer and label it. But does that mean that once you reach a certain level of failure, you’re not allowed to call things by their name just because they’re not obviously "measurable"?
Imagine this: You trust your dentist to do a decent job, but on almost every visit they pull the wrong tooth or drill in the wrong place - would you say to yourself, "Well, maybe they haven’t had an easy life," or would you rather conclude that you chose a lousy dentist? Too trivial? Too far-fetched? After all, you can't compare a visit to the dentist to a family life, can you? Well, sometimes you can.
Let me further illustrate why the simple adjective "bad" should be removed from the taboo when it comes to parent-child relationships: Have you ever advised a friend/family membeacquaintance to distance themselves from someone? Because you realized that their relationship (developing or existing) clearly wasn’t doing them any good? Have you ever told someone: "This person is bad for you"? If so, did you try to think of a better word? Or did “bad” just roll off the tongue - because it was the truth?
Yes, some of you may be offended when we refer to ourselves as children of "bad" parents. How disrespectful. They gave us the gift of life - or they adopted us. Either way, a total no-go! Right? But maybe you should ask yourself WHY exactly it triggers you so much.
As the daughter of a bad mother, let me tell you this: People who have had difficult, perhaps even traumatic, childhoods are rarely interested in a "revenge" or "shaming" anyone. It's about finally being seen and heard. It's about no longer hiding our scars (physical and psychological). It’s about staying true to ourselves when others lecture us about "family values".
The level of respect and compassion that is undoubtedly given to BOTH bad and good parents is equally due to their children.
If something was "not good"... what was it? Open for improvement? Probably. Not quite ideal? Possibly. Mediocre? Perhaps. But these quibbles over words do not minimize the damage done. Especially when it was just that: BAD.
Awful. Horrible. Disastrous. Traumatizing.
We can add whatever suits our case. Whatever suits OUR FEELINGS. It is primarily a judgment of "parenting", not particularly of the people who dabble in it. For the greatest harm can be done with the best of intentions. Maybe they failed because they "didn’t know better". Maybe they passed on what was given to them. They too were once children, and perhaps they themselves were victims in some way. But do any of these possibilities or facts change the outcome? Or reverse our trauma? Sadly, no.
Deep down, somewhere, there is still is a child reaching out for help because they have been hurt. Don’t shut them up or push them away. Don’t yell at them or tell them “not to be so dramatic”. Instead, just listen. For healing also means acknowledging all the wounds that have been inflicted, both visible and invisible. Don’t belittle them just because you don't like their choice of words.
So please, just take that child's hand. Even if they're already an adult. Listen closely. Watch carefully. It doesn’t matter if you can’t fully grasp the implications of what you're hearing or seeing. Just be open and compassionate. And maybe your own inner child will speak up and have a thing or two to say.

I (19F) grew up in a strict scripturally-focused non-denominational church that focused more on intelligence than emotion and spirituality. While in many ways I'm thankful for the experience, it also misled me on many things and has left me spiritually unfulfilled. My family is Christian, but my parents aren't that devout and their faith has never been their own, it's all my controlling religion-obsessed grandmother's.
Her devotion kept her children with a horribly abusive father for over 20 years since she was waiting on a biblical reason to divorce. It's hard for me to live with that fact and be okay with the existence of God and His restrictions on divorce, as the situation permanently ruined my family in ways that can never be repaired and still affect us.
My church also never had an active youth ministry because since I was in the nursery class, it was always just me and one other boy. He sadly took his own life as we entered the teen class, so I was left alone and because of what happened, no one wanted to touch that class. Then COVID hit and once again, I was left on my own. Our church was mostly old people, so online services were barely audible and other churches we tried seemed to put too much emphasis on presentation and less on meaningful content.
My family left this church because of the lack of youth and for a lot of other reasons, as well as my mom breaking away from her own mother's control. We've tried other churches, but nothing has been a good fit.
I've broken away from the faith. I don't have any. Because I grew up in Christianity, becoming a Christian was an obligation and as I branch out into other churches...I don't even know how to do that anymore. I'm not baptized (my church believed you're not a Christian until baptism) because I honestly have never believed. I may understand the Bible, but it doesn't mean anything to me. It's never helped me, prayer has never done anything for me. I don't find the Bible empowering or comforting because it's so distant from today and I'm on the autism spectrum and have a strong dislike of envisioning human faces. I would rather the Bible be about blobs of energy or animals rather than people because having to imagine people gives me deep discomfort and triggers my sensory issues. Also, since I am a woman, it really angers me to read about the so-called limitations placed on what my gender can and can't do. I grew up watching men always leading as women actually do everything for them but don't even get to speak for themselves. It's bothered me since I was a little girl and even if it is unbiblical, I can't see myself endorsing or supporting a place where women can't teach, pray, or even speak, like the church I grew up in.
I don't get the basics anymore. Why being a sinner is a bad thing, the point of prayer, salvation, why would I even want to be a Christian, etc. Nothing in Christianity entices me or makes me want to conform to it. It won't cure my disabilities, give me wealth, or fix a toxic family history. I can't be forgiven by the actual people I seek forgiveness from, who may still hold grudges against me...I don't see the point of it. I haven't since I was a child.
I really don't have an open mind anymore. I don't trust Christian research or science, it has such a history of false claims. I don't trust Christian content creators and there's so many that give me a good reason not to. Trust issues also run in the family, I was raised by two victims of severe child abuse who continue to be paranoid and distrustful well into adulthood.
Talking to people quickly turns to arguments, as I present question after question, counter after counter, and it feels like I just get vague reasoning in return. I relate to people who've left Christianity more than those in it. I want to be a Christian, solely to tick off the checkmark that's been instilled in me. Being a Christian is like graduating and getting a job, it's an obligation to fulfill for me.
Christianity bears no benefit, no meaning, and no point as far as I can see.
It's never been pleasant for me. Reading the Bible is confusing, going to or watching churches is the most grating experience on earth, and surrounding myself with other Christians is only an invitation to fake smiles, fake friendships, drama, and gossip. I grew up long enough in the community to know this.
I have a lot of alone time this summer and I wanted to use it to really work on my spiritual health. I just don't know how to start since I've completely turned away from it all.
Any advice would be welcome, but unfortunately, that does not mean it will be taken.

Wade initiative gets on the ballot.~ ~I’m reaching out today to let you know that the radical Right to Life and the “Life Defense Fund” or their agents are likely to contact you and ask you to remove your name from the petition you signed. They are already contacting signers and could contact you by email, text, telephone, or even make a visit to your home to try and convince you to sign an affidavit to withdraw your name from the petition you signed to restore reproductive rights in South Dakota.~ ~Please do not be fooled, and do not agree to remove your signature if you are asked. Dakotans for Health Warns 55,000 Freedom Amendment Petition Signers of Coordinated Effort by Right to Life Organization
Dakotans for Health, spearheaded by co-founder Rick Weiland, is issuing a stark warning to the 55,000 signatories of its petitions aimed at putting the abortion issue on the ballot this fall in South Dakota. The organization cautions of a deliberate and organized campaign by the Right to Life (RTL) organization to coerce signers into withdrawing their support from the petition. In a post to the 55,000 individuals who lent their signatures to the Freedom Amendment petition, advocating for voters rather than politicians to decide the abortion rights of women in South Dakota, Weiland declared, “Right to Life has intensified their efforts to deceive you into retracting your support from our petition.” Weiland revealed instances where parishioners at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sioux Falls were provided with misleading materials, including a 'Liar Flyer,' and formal legal forms urging the removal of their names from the petition. He warned that similar tactics are being employed online, in public spaces, and within various churches across the state to pressure signers into renouncing their support. “Don’t be misled by their falsehoods. Politely remind them that your intention when signing was to empower voters to decide this crucial issue, and that remains unchanged,” Weiland emphasized. Dakotans for Health underscored the urgency of standing firm against this orchestrated attempt to undermine the democratic process. Weiland remarked, “It was evident from the outset that the Right to Life extremists controlling the State Legislature aimed to thwart our efforts when they hastily enacted emergency laws facilitating organized campaigns to coerce or intimidate petition signers into withdrawal.” He added, “They recognize that South Dakotans support granting women and their healthcare providers the autonomy to make informed decisions regarding their health, hence their desperate bid to obstruct the democratic right to vote on this profoundly personal matter.” In its concluding statement, Dakotans for Health reaffirmed the significance of democracy as a safeguard against governmental overreach. “Democracy is your shield against politicians dictating the course of your life. The right to vote on matters of paramount importance is the cornerstone of democracy,” the organization asserted. “We are encouraging signatories to reaffirm their commitment to upholding democratic principles and support for the Freedom Amendment by visiting www.dakotans4health.com,” Weiland concluded.

So be aware, if you signed the "Restore Roe" petition, these people might call you or even just show up at your house and ask you to remove your name. I suspect I saw a few of them out and about in my neighborhood already; there were a handful of people not going door to door but knocking on doors and checking off a list.

Great time to be a COL fan, and a great moment for NA CS.
Still managing my expectations (I went into EPL keeping them low, and was pleasantly surprised), but only emotionally-driven NA haters could argue COL aren't among the top 4-5 favorites to take the trophy.
But also, results aren't everything. Love this team and their chemistry. So fun to watch.

Recently I’ve become pretty fascinated with the world of quantum mechanics, and I’ve been learning a lot about particles and wavelengths, Heisenberg uncertainty etc. I even bought a little book dedicated to writing all this stuff in to learn it better. Problem is, my personal math skills don’t really go beyond basic algebra, so when I watched videos that go into calculus math, I get lost and am no longer able to follow along because the videos don’t break down the calculus, it’s implied you already have a working knowledge of it. I found one online precalculus class but it’s in Spanish, and while I do understand it I really prefer it to be in English. Does anyone here have any resources? I’d also be willing to pay for a tutor if necessary.

i've found caseoh about a week ago due to a random youtube short suggestion, and kept getting more of his video's recommended, and it REALLY brightened up my life in a "weird" way,
after i confirmed that he is actually fine with the bullying (because be real, what we are seeing is actual bullying, and not joke's) his reactions have grown on me,
sure, this is not the kind of content everyone wil love, at first. i was recoiling in cringe thinking he geniunely is getting hurt by this, especially since i've grown up in a environment that his community is known for, bullying you to try and break you,
Love it or hate it. caseoh's actual personality outside of the "bit" is actually awesome,
occasionally he breaks persona and you see the geniune man come out, or look at his fan-mail video's, especially when he gets awesome fan art that isnt trying to purposefully destroy his mood, CaseOh as a person is awesome to be with, and to laugh with,
his humour, his joke responses to bullying, everything is just, something unique i've never experienced before with online content,
sure, we've all seen bullying online before. but never does the reciever turn it around quite like he seems able to,
i have never been this productive in months and sure, i will eventually get tired of him, like i've done to all content creators i've watched,
but the man has pulled me out of a depression i did not know i had, he came when i needed him the most,
every night when i get back home i fire up his videos, or a complication of his reactions, and geniuenly laugh for 4/5 hours straight deep into the night,
i so so so hope this bullying doesnt actually get to him, and cause him to quit his content creation,
i hope case lurks this sub occasionally and sees that he brings a positive result even to the more mature audiences,

and PSST hey case, if you are lurking around and seeing this, know that you've got something about you that the internet has not seen in a LOONG while,
please, keep it up, BUT if you need some time off, take it, seriously,
i've moderated for alot of streamers, and time and time again i see people pushpushpush till it's too late, and then lose it all due to a big burn-out.
you've worked hard labour before streaming, so you probably know what it is like to be tired of everything for a little while,
if you need a break, take it and relax a while, and come back with the energy to bully the bullies again,
i've seen some posts on this sub about people saying he is "burned out" but what i am seeing is no such thing quite yet, but i understand that it does get really annoying to be bullied all the time and i understand why occasionally he would just "dip out" suddenly,

So, I just got through watching One Piece and I have a few theories. To be honest, I haven’t looked to deep into what's already out there, besides just clarifying some facts for myself online so feel free to show me some things that I have missed. It’s possible some of this is already circulating around. I really just want to try and put my ramblings into one place. Spoilers for One Piece!
Ok, so there's a few separate theories to this but most of it has to do with Blackbeard and his motivations. One thing I find interesting is that Blackbeard, even since he was a part of Whitebeards crew, has been looking for very strong devil fruits and seems to have intimate knowledge of the ones he is seeking. The first one he sought out was the Dark-Dark fruit which among other things seems to be capable of stopping, and possibly stealing other devil fruit powers. One of his crew members, Shiryu, was seen to have the Clear-Clear fruit ability which already belonged to another character. I have to assume he knew about this before he found and acquired this fruit. Which begs the question, why does he know so much about this fruit? He is now able to use that power to steal powers for himself and his crew. We haven't gotten confirmation that the Dark-Dark fruit can do this, but just like a lot of things about this post, I’m going to be assuming that this is the case. In stealing these devil fruit abilities, he has to be very aware of not only what these fruits can do but who is currently using them. Law, in a recent episode, even alludes to the fact that he is hunting down devil fruit users. Now Burgess has the Strong-Strong fruit. Again, where is he getting this information? He obviously knew what Whitebeards devil fruit was capable of from the time he spent with him, and decided that of all the devil fruits he could have, he wanted that ability. Granted, it is an incredibly strong fruit, one worthy of an emperor of the sea, but with his intimate knowledge of devil fruits there had to be a reason Teach went after that one for himself. I think I have a possible answer.
Now this next part, I think is a common theory floating around out there but it is necessary for the rest of what is to come. Teach is one of the only people we have seen have multiple devil fruit abilities. This is crazy enough in itself, but if you notice, he stopped at just the two. Why not just take many devil fruit powers for himself and become the strongest out there? I think it's because he has the Zoan type Cerberus fruit. I mean, his jolly rodger is a Cerberus head. This could possibly make him three beings in one, allowing him to have three devil fruits. A Zoan type Cerberus fruit, a Paramecia fruit in the Quake-Quake fruit, and a Logia in the Dark-Dark fruit. Teach is smart. I think a big part of his motivations led him to intimately knowing about the powers of these three fruits. He knew if he acquired the Cerberus fruit then he could hold three devil fruit abilities and somehow figured out where that fruit was. Then I think he knew that if he joined Whitebeard for long enough he would eventually be led to the Dark-Dark fruit and be able to steal other abilities which were already taken. Then, once he had the opportunity he stole the most important fruit for his purposes, the quake-quake fruit.
Making even more assumptions, we need to look at the ancient weapon Pluton. What we know now is that Pluton is a world ending weapon, specifically a ship that was built a long time ago in Water 7, and that those blueprints were passed down until they reached Franky. We also just found out that it is sunken beneath Wano. Wano is a country that has massive walls built around it. The ancient settlement far below what is now Wano is where the ship actually resides, and those walls would need to be broken to retrieve the ship.
Now we're gonna talk a bit about the World Government. Specifically in regard to the Five Elders. Each one is named in some way after a planet in our solar system. St. Topman Warcury (Mercury), St. Ethan Baron V. Nusjuro (assuming the V. is for Venus), St. Marcus Mars (Mars), St. Shepard Ju Peter (Jupiter), and St. Jaygarcia Saturn (Saturn). The three ancient weapons are the rest of the planets. Uranus, Poseidon (Which the roman name would be Neptune), and Pluton (or Pluto). Poseidon, we know is also a person, Shirahoshi. It would make sense that Uranus and Pluton were also actual, physical people. But Pluton is a ship. However, we have seen before that ships in the One Piece world can have their own spirits, or personas. This has been shown with the Going Merry and the Sunny. The exact lore behind how this happens isnt totally clarified and so I think there are things about it we haven’t been told yet. It's possible that Pluton is not just a magnificent war ship but also holds the spirit of what may have been one of these Elders of the World government. Some kind of all encompassing power that has had major effects on the world in the past.
Now, going back to Blackbeard for a sec, if he does have a Cerberus devil fruit that has more interesting implications. Cerberus is the hound of Hades, the three headed dog that guards the entrance to the underworld. Another name for Hades is Pluto. It is very possible that Blackbeard works for this ancient weapon and that with the powers he has acquired, specifically with the quake-quake fruit, he intends to break the walls of Wano and finally release Pluton. He is, afterall, not too far from Wano at this very moment. It is possible that Pluton has been behind all of Blackbeards motives and actions.
Not only that, but Hades, the guardian of the underworld, is in a way the devil himself. I also think that not only is Pluton a person as well as a ship, but he is the original creator of the devil fruits. This might be one way to explain Blackbeards intimate knowledge of so many devil fruits including where to find them. Now, among the celestial bodies of our solar system that I listed, two were not accounted for. That was Earth and the Sun. I think the Sun is obvious to find. Joyboy. Nika the sun god. But then we have Imu, this new character who seems to be the head of it all. Umi, or Imu backwards, in Japanese means “the sea”. The whole world of One Piece is covered in the sea. So Imu could perhaps be our very own home planet, or at least some kind of embodiment of it. Now, if all of these Elder, these god like beings have some kind of dominion over different aspects of the world, then here is the conclusion to my theory.
Pluton and Imu at some point got into a big fight, likely over the creation of devil fruits. Imu took Plutons spirit and sealed him away in this world ending ship and then sunk him to the bottom of the sea, beneath Wano, putting up those walls to keep him there, and then declaring that all devil fruit users would be cursed by the sea, which he rules over.
Anyway, that's just some thoughts I had, but please help me fill in any things I might be missing and let me hear your ideas on all of this!

I don’t really know what to do about these situations. Maybe I’m irrational and paranoid or I deserve to be self-advocative, I wouldn’t know, so hear me out.
There’s a Dollarama I frequently visit less than 5 minutes away from my home. I live in a semi-ghetto part of Ottawa, so I’ve occasionally seen a security guard on duty, usually the same one.
One day, I had been wandering slowly, taking pictures of items I wanted to buy later, and when I had my phone down at my side for a moment to look at chocolate, she said: “Miss, your camera is left on.” While in any other situation this would have been a helpful thing to point out, I’m uncomfortable about it because she must have been watching me like a hawk to even notice or care about that.
Even though I’m at this store often, I have felt like she’s been trailing me every time I see her. I saw her leave her post at the candy section (it is possible to view the cashiers and entrance better from there) at the exact same time I left the aisle, I saw her right on my heels as I was turning. I slowed for a moment, forcing her to slow a bit too, made a slightly obvious backward glance at her, and as I went into the next aisle she left, but later on she stood on tiptoe to peek her head at me when I was in the checkout line (which is blocked slightly by the tall minifridges) when I went to pay.
This kind of close trailing doesn’t seem to happen to any other person in the store. Only me. I’m the only person that she watches sometimes, until I make it clear I’ve noticed and she’ll walk away like I said earlier. It feels like no coincidence or “just a part of the job” to stand at the end of the aisles I alone happen to be in, or to have her walk right behind me as often as she does.
I am not the only one though, as some online reviews dated from around the same time I first encountered her also had complaints of feeling singled out and followed. This guard even tried joining a conversation with a group of girls that she was silently following. I’m too socially anxious to speak up at a person with authority to potentially use force on me, nor do I feel comfortable speaking to management, because my young appearance always earns me condescending/unhelpful responses.
The big question from me is: Am I the problem, paranoid, or am I a victim?? I know retail employees are meant to look out for suspicious traits in a person that make them likely thieves, but I would have thought me being there so often, buying at least one item every time, would have cleared suspicions on me by now. I visually look young enough to pass as a teenaged female (18 intersex, soon 19), was born with a limp, have autism, and keep my appearance passably clean. Am I naturally a suspicious individual by sight because of those traits? Do I need to further change my appearance to get this to stop?

The story itself seems to be a folk legend, so it's been retold in a lot of places, which makes this book hard to look for. The legend is often called "The Golden Goblet", but searching by that title hasn't gotten me anywhere, and I haven't found any other names for it.
Here's an example of the legend; here's another one. To quote TV Tropes: "a Siamese cat was guarding a goblet for her owner while she was pregnant, and to keep it safe she stared at it constantly and wrapped her tail around it, which made her eyes crossed and her tail kinked, and her kittens came out the same way, and that's why Siamese cats have kinked tails and crossed eyes."
In some versions of the legend the cat is called Chula and her mate is called Tien, but this discovery hasn't given me success in finding the book. In some versions of the legend the cat's tail is kinked by carrying rings, but this isn't what happened in the book I read.
The art style was fairly realistic, not cartoonish. I seem to remember there being a lot of detail and colour. This actually looks pretty similar in terms of style, though it's not identical and it's definitely not from the same book.
I've ruled out:

• Sagwa / The Chinese Siamese Cat: Happens to also be a just-so story about why Siamese cats look the way they do, but it's about why they have seal point markings, and it's because Sagwa fell into an inkwell. Not related.
• I Am from Siam by Tatiana Balkoff-Drowne: Neither the plot nor the art style match, and the colours are way too muted.
• The Watch Cat by Mili Northrup: This says "the Siamese cat came to have a rough, scratchy voice and a crook at the end of its tail when it went out hunting for a lost child", and that didn't happen in the book I read.
• The Cat of Bubastes by G.A. Henty: Not a picture book, really has no relation aside from being about a cat, but it keeps coming up when I look for this book.
• The Golden Goblet by Eloise Jarvis McGraw: Not a picture book, again no relation aside from the title, but it keeps coming up.
• Cats of Magic, Mythology and Mystery by Karl Shuker: Keeps coming up because it does discuss the legend; but it's not old enough and it doesn't seem to be a picture book, and it tells a different version from the one I read anyway.
• The Tail of the Siamese Cat by Geraldine Kaye: I haven't been able to see the inside, but the art style on the cover doesn't match at all. (However, if anyone knows a way I can see inside, I will take a look just to make sure.)
• Poon, or How the Siamese Cat Got the Knot in His Tail: Suggested in a previous post. It's hard to be sure because I can't find an online copy to examine, but from the front cover and the length (76 pages) I don't think it's the right one. Besides, the cat in the book I read was female, and she only got a kink in her tail, not a knot. (However, if anyone knows a way I can see inside, I will take a look just to make sure.)

I probably read this in the 2000s. I'm not sure how old the book is, but it didn't look old to me at the time.

I meant to stop my NF subscription for a while because I'm getting bored (have been for a long time) with Netflix, but I forgot and missed it by one day so will wait another month and mull over my options during the meantime. However, I just noticed that Netflix has an option for cancellation only and there was no mention of having a total of ten months to pause service. Is this no feature longer available?
I started sub'ing Netflix back when it was mail-DVD only, I think it was 2003. I was late to streaming NF, which we began in 2008 via my kids' Wii. I can't remember how much we paid in the beginning, but I could swear it was $4.99/month at the time for 2 or 3 movies, or maybe that was the one movie option. If anyone remembers or knows what the price was back then would you please share that info with me just to satisfy curiosity? The earliest and lowest price I can find online right now is $9.99 a month, but I remember when it went up to $9.99 and had to think about whether or not it was worth keeping because it took a while to watch a movie, get it back in the mail, get another movie, watch it, get it back in the mail, and then get another one all within a month's time -- we're very rural in the middle of absofreakinglutley nowhere and the mail takes about 2 or 3 days longer each way for us. It was still great programming at the time, and the added streaming was a huge plus, so we kept it and have been with NF since...more than two decades.
However, my kids are older now, the platform has greatly changed, and there isn't much on Netflix that interests me anymore, or rather, possibly there is but it is too difficult for my feeble old brain to browse. There used to be a great site that had a database of most of what NF had, and it seemed to keep up with the monthly changes pretty well, but they haven't been doing that for a while now. Looking at pages of huge thumbnails of what is immediately current is a pia. If anyone knows of a site that keeps track of titles (such as a database), then would you please share that link? Something like that is much easier to use.
I enjoy many of the foreign shows, but more and more of them don't have English audio dub. Although I enjoyed subtitles in the past, neuro issues have now made it nigh impossible for me to read them while trying simultaneously to watch the show. This genre is the biggest reason I kept NF after the database website stopped keeping the database. So before beginning ponderations on whether or not NF is worth the $276/year, I'd like to better understand NF's steaming options. Although my laptop and mobile devices are 1080, my TVs and desktop are 4K or UHD. My ISP plan definitely has the ability to deliver the higher resolutions, but recently I saw a video on YouTube where this guy was talking about not getting 4K. I stupidly didn't write down the title, didn't save or bookmark it, and now I cannot remember the title or the channel or the person so can't go back and find out what this was all about. He did some digging and talked to NF and .... I absolutely cannot remember what he was saying, but it was along the lines of not only do we need to have the appropriate equipment capable of streaming and viewing 4K, but we have to also have the precise equipment that NF wants us to have. Please do not ask me for details because I have no clue. My memory has deteriorated considerably. Do any of you know about this 4K/UHD issue and needing equipment that Netflix wants us to use? I was thinking that if I cannot really get 4K (sometimes I know I do not but I thought perhaps it was just glitches with router), then perhaps it is not a big deal to jump down to the one device plan at 1080 since I'm the only person using NF in my family.
If this is the case, then I'd like to compare the viewing quality of a 4K show, UHD, and 1080. It is easy to find 4K, but when I search for UHD, I get the same 4K titles. I'm guessing that this is because the vert is the same but not the horizontal? Does anyone know? But if I search for 1080, well, that doesn't really matter. Do any of you know of a show on NF that is not the higher rez's so I can use it for comparison?
I'd really like to get this figured out before the next billing cycle, especially considering the fact that Netflix is expected to raise rates sometime this year.
