2024.05.14 15:01 FarragutCircle Reading The Big Book of Cyberpunk, Week 16

Welcome to Reading The Big Book of Cyberpunk!
Each week we (u/FarragutCircle and u/fanny_bertram) will be reading 5-ish stories from Jared Shurin’s The Big Book of Cyberpunk, which includes a curated selection of cyberpunk stories written from 1950 to 2022! We’ll include synopses of the stories along with links to any legally available online versions we can find. Feel free to read along with us or just stop by and hear our thoughts about some cyberpunk stories to decide if any of them sound interesting to you.
Every once in a while, we reach out to people who have more insight, due to being fans of the author or have some additional context for the story. (Or we just tricked them into it.) So please welcome u/Kopratic who will be sharing their thoughts on "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick!
Section 4: Challenge
In our fourth and penultimate section, editor Jared Shurin highlights how cyberpunk looks at technology that creates harm when put into practice, and later cites Marshall McLuhan about artists as challengers. (Shurin really seems to like this McLuhan guy.) Amusingly there’s a footnote where he mentions litrpg in passing, though he says there’s no litrpg in this anthology)
“We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick (published 1966; also available in his collection Selected Stories of Philip K. Dick)
Quail’s desire to go to Mars leads him to a memory-implant company so he can remember going to Mars, but complications and revelations and twists ensue, hilariously.
“Speed” by Misha (1988)
I think that Speed is looking for Speelyi-427 on behalf of a computer AI called Juno 888, but after that I’m lost.
“Computer Friendly” by Eileen Gunn (1989; also available in her collection Stable Strategies and Others)
Elizabeth and other kids are tested, and while she passes with flying covers, her new friends might lose their lives unless she can figure out a way to help them in a world where the heavily computerized future uses real brains from people and dogs.
“I Was a Teenage Genetic Engineer” by Nisi Shawl (1989)
The narrator is imprisoned for her reckless genetic engineering, making new incarnations of old gods.
“The Gene Drain” by Lewis Shiner (1989)
A generation ship ends up right back on Earth, with disturbing and amusing differences between the two groups.
That’s it for this week! Check back the same time next week where we’ll be reading and discussing "Deep Eddy" by Bruce Sterling, "The Yuletide Cyberpunk Yarn, or Christmas_Eve-117.DIR" by Victor Pelevin, "Wonderama" by Bef, "comp.basilisk FAQ" by David Langford, and "Spider's Nest" by Myra Çakan.

2024.05.14 15:01 NotThatIMatter124 Anyone else play Custodes in One Page Rules' Grimdark Future system?

For a bit of context, Grimdark Future is a fairly long-standing, independently developed set of wargaming rules made as an alternative to 40k/30k.
It's main biggest advantage is that it's free and you can use any 40k or AoS/Fantasy army you have in it, as well as any custom models, Custodes (known as Custodian Brothers in the system) included. Also, Skaven and Lizardmen have a faction which I find wonderful.
I've played a couple of test games, and being honest, I really like it. I won't say it is strictly better or worse than 40k as a system, as it really feels too different to what 40k is, with advantages and drawbacks.
There's no codex books, just a set of faction rules that are updated quarterly with points adjustments. The core rules are set to be updated annually. The rules are really quite simplified, model units all have just two basic stats: Quality and Defense, as well as weapon profiles and abilities.
When it comes to Custodians, our models get the "Toughness" ability, making them multi-wound models. Some like our bikes have "Fast" and "Fly", making them able to move through terrain or increase their base movement from 6" to 8", etc (everything moves 6" by default in this game system, no Movement stat exists for units).
But the best bit IMO is: wargear freedom. Like in Horus Heresy, we get a full-on arsenal of weapons to choose from, we can put shields on nearly anything, we can make any non-terminator model into "Wardens" that give them a feel no pain effect. Want to give a Melta weapon mount to your Allarus' spear? You can do that. Saggitarum with shields? Go ahead. Essentially: list building is a fun process.
All of our models except the Orion Dropship and Ares Gunship are included in some form, so whether you have GW or FW Custodes models, you can play this system no problem. Same goes of Sisters of Silence, they can be run as a part of the army as well (they have access to magic, rather than shutting that down as one of their things).
In terms of the army overall, we are properly elite of the elite, one of our single models can easily take up 30-40% of your list at lower points games, same with full units. In return, we are noticeably beefy and exceptionally deadly. I'd say thematically, appropriately so.
The main drawback is that, well, not very many people play Grimdark Future AFAIK compared to 40k, hence this post asking: who else plays?
Honestly, given the state of Custodes in 40k and 40k overall becoming very frustrating with how swingy the state of factions can be, I am probably going to move to Grimdark Future as my system of choice going forward.

Guts and blackpowder daily fact! (Day 70)
In the test version of the map there was a message writen in blood in the gunpowder shed (The one where the Frenchman is just sunbathing there) and it reads "Pour elle un Français doit mourir" which if translated to english, it means "For her(Talkin about France), a Frenchman must die" but it was most likely removed do to how bad Roblox moderation system is.
\"Is no one gonna talk about how the blood is just floating there? Also is it just me or do I still remember seeing that thing even after the test version?\"

2024.05.14 14:59 emilymh99 First pregnancy..scared

On April 17th I took a pregnancy test which cane back positive (this was a Wednesday), the weekend before I took one it came back negative. For the first 2ish weeks my breasts and nipples were very tender and swollen, then I started spotting brown. The breast tenderness went away upon the beginning of spotting. I had a pelvic exam this past Friday (5/10) and my cervix appeared closed. My original 8 weeks appointment was supposed to be 5/15 but I went yesterday 5/13 instead. On the scan all that was shown was a 7.5mm sac with a yolk, no embryo and because of the spotting the doctor told me either it’s too early or theres a miscarriage. My HCG level was 3995 and they dated me at 5 weeks 4 days. I haven’t had enough spotting for a pad or any bright red but this is day number 9 of spotting and my pregnancy symptoms are pretty much gone (tiredness and tender breasts). Does anyone have any similar experiences and it turned out positive…? I have my next scan June 5th and Im a nervous wreck.

2024.05.14 14:53 AggressiveVictory00 Ketones in my urine but no keto diet or diabetes??

Yesterday I went to urgent care because of stabbing/excruciating pain in the left side of my back, about where my left kidney, kind of right below my ribcage. This was a kind of pain I have never felt before, literally rolling on the floor in pain. It got significantly worse within an hour which is why i went in so quickly. I was also severely nauseous and threw up a little before i left. It was slowly lessening in pain while i was at the dr's, when i got there they said they didn't have an ultrasound to check for a kidney stone but they'd do a urinalysis to see if i had a uti ect.
The results came back and everything else was normal but I had 3+ ketones in my urine. Because of this they tested my glucose which was 85 and i hadn't eaten in 8ish hours (ate at 9am, test was at 5ish). The 85 result seemed to rule out diabetes because they didn't mention it again.
Their next step was to refer me to a different urgent care so they could give me an ultrasound. by this point the pain had become pretty minor and since that was really all i came there for I told them I was going to go home and wait to see if the pain came back, and if it did i'd go in. Well the pain never returned even close to the level it was before so I didn't go back.
I was trying to do some research on the ketone thing because while i used to do the keto diet a few years ago i don't really know what's normal or not. Anyways my confusion is that I couldn't really find any kind of explanation for why there would be that many ketones in my blood? like none of them made sense or like checked out with my symptoms if that makes sense. I am not pregnant, i have not drank alcohol in weeks, diabetes does run in my family but i think its type 2 which I thought was almost entirely environmental based and I eat well. My main issue is that a lot of the symptoms of most of the things overlap with the potential symptoms of a medication i started about 2-3 weeks ago. For example: extreme thirst, numbness/tingling/staticky feeling in my arms or face (not actually sure if this is an adderall thing it just started about a week ago), dry mouth, dizziness/lightheaded, nausea, weight loss. I'm on adderall for context. So I am experiencing all of those things but also it could be explained by the med.
I also went through the foods i've eaten the last few days to see if maybe i accidentally put myself into ketosis by my diet but i eat wayyy more than the 20-50 range that would put me in ketosis. Like the tortillas i've been using are 40 alone lol. I also bought those little ketosis test strips because i wanted to see if it was a fluke or something or would just go away on its own but i've tested twice since and both times the results are relatively the same and the number converts to about what the urinalysis reported (between 2.7 and 3.5ish but it's a color scale so not super accurate).
So I guess my question is should I be concerned? I'm also feeling pretty "weak" like you know the feeling when lifting your arms feels like so much work. But also i'm getting nervous that it's all in my head if that makes sense. I am not feeling the pain in my kidney area anymore but the ketone thing is kind of throwing me for a loop, i just kind of assumed I had a kidney stone so this came from left field a little bit. I'm debating if I should go to the dr today because I don't know if this is just a thing that can "happen" and it's fine. Also what are some things it could be? I just can't seem to find a reasoning that makes sense other than diabetes and that was seemingly ruled out.

2024.05.14 14:51 LoneWanderer-TX First person in history to get P0240/P0420 and not new CATs

2017 F150
Seriously. Both came up front left/right emissions warnings. Took it to a muffler shop. We did the tests, they took the sensors out and looked inside the CATs with a scope. Nada. Perfectly normal. Checked the sensors - both front ones were shitty. Replaced them. Warning gone for 200 miles so far.
Zero issues with the truck before or after. Gas mileage is slightly better 21.75 highway now. Was about 20.50. So basically it's less windy now probably?
I've told people for years - when the sensor light for the emissions system comes on, 99% of the time it's your cat that's gone bad. Overjoyed to be in the 1% for once.

2024.05.14 14:49 Cylerhusk Just got my 6,000 mile '23 ZR2 back from 8 weeks in the shop, and got a new engine

Yup, as the thread title says, my almost brand new ZR2 was just in the shop for 8 weeks. I just got it back yesterday, along with a brand new engine. About 8 weeks ago, I took it out on a trail by my house. The wheels got stuck in a little mud pit, not bad or anything, but ended up spinning them quite a bit getting the truck out. At one point I was giving it a decent bit of gas and hit the rev limiter a few times. I only mention that, because that's the only thing that I can think of that destroyed my entire engine, which frankly is fairly disconcerting because there's nothing that should be inherently dangerous about bumping off the rev limiter a few times - that's what it's there for in the first place. Long story short, it was still driving fine, then later that evening I was driving down the freeway and my check engine light came on, along with a reduced engine power message, and I started getting occasional sputtering. I ran the codes and got:
P06DD: Engine Oil Pressure Control Stuck Off
P060C: internal control module main processor performance
C2A07: engine control module indicates torque signal malfunction
Took it into the shop, and they couldn't figure the problem out. Replaced numerous parts, had a GM field tech come out and look at it as well. Ultimately, they made the decision to just replace the entire engine. 2 months later and here I am. Got it back yesterday. Haven't driven it much, but so far seems to be driving ok at least.
I gotta say, it's pretty upsetting to have to get a new engine in my almost brand new truck. They said they're gonna ship the old engine up to Detroit to try and figure out what went wrong. Kind of wish I could get an update on that, as I'd really love to know what they determine ended up going wrong with my engine. But it really feels like some part likely just crapped out far easier than it should have.
Here's the tech notes from the service:
TEST DROVE VEHICLE LIGHT CAME ON SETTING CODE P0011 DOC ID#6279434, GOT 5.5OHMS, ON CIRCUIT 5284 TO GRND, THEN WITH THE GM TEST LIGHT, GOT POWER TO TEST LIGHT, THEN TESTED FOR LESS THAN 1V ON CIRCUIT 5284 TO GRND WITH BEING DISCONNECTED AT X3 AT THE ECM SIDE, ALSO SWAPPED BOTH ACTUATORS TO SEE IF THE CODE WILL CHANGE TO THE EXHAUST SIDE, DID NOT, TOLD BY TAC TO START WITH R&R INTAKE ACTUATOR, AFTER THAT CODE STILL SET AS CURRENT, ADVISE TO SEND IN A VIDEO OF OIL PRESSURE, GOT 45PSI AT IDLE, AND 55MSI AT 1500, OIL PRESSURE GOOD, THEN TOLD TO CHECK THE CONDITION OF THE ENGINE OIL, NO METAL DEBRIS FOUND, NORMAL, THEN TOLD TO REPLACE CONNECTOR #6180736, CODE STILL SETS, ASK TO CHECK TIMING, TIMING TOOLS SET IN AND TIMED, TOLD TO R&R EXHAUST ACTUATOR AND BOLT, TEST DROVE CODE STILL SETTING, DURING THIS TIME ENGINE MAKING MECHANICAL NOISES, FSE CAME OUT DIA, VEHICLE LEAD TO R&R ECM, REMOVAL, AFTER PROGRAMMING CODE STILL SETS NOISE GOT LOUDER, REMOVE AND REPLACE ENGINE, TOP OFF FLUIDS, RECHARGE A/C SYSTEM, DAMAGE CONNECTOR REPLACE TEST DRIVE VEHICLE AS DESIGN

2024.05.14 14:47 ConceptsShining What are some games with highly unique gameplay mechanics, with almost nothing else out there quite like them?

In your opinion, what are some great games with highly original gameplay, with little to no other games quite like them? The kind of games that are very hard to squarely fit the gameplay of into any existing specific genre?
What comes to my mind is the Wii and DS's Trauma Center games. They're great games that utilize the Wiimote's gimmicks to great effect to produce a highly original experience. For instance, they require that you hold the Wiimote steady to aim and move the pointer with precision during surgery operations. It's nothing like using a mouse or analog stick that you can move and stop at will; your dexterity and reflexes are genuinely tested. Many Wii games, even first-party ones, pale in comparison in terms of creative usage of the Wiimote's gimmicks; often using it for little more than being a glorified mouse for menu navigation, and rudimentary flicking/twisting motions (often for functions that could be easily replaced with a button press/analog stick movement).
I struggle to think of many games that are this unique. A testament to the games uniquity is how they are practically impossible to faithfully port to modern systems; they were 100% made with the Wiimote and Nunchuk in mind, and you just can't translate them to a gamepad/KBM.

2024.05.14 14:42 OhIFuckedUpGood My first dog will be gone soon

My cute dog (American Cocker Spaniel) will pass soon. He already had a bad start when he was still with his mom (inexperienced breeder). He spend the first few weeks in the hospital. Some of his brothers and sisters didn’t make it, but he did. When we had our first check up the vet told us that his lungs are not in a very good shape. The rest of his body was fine with the exception of his teeth which were close together and had some plague already.
During the years we encountered some problems. After weeks of searching what is happening we found he has an severe longterm allergy for beef. We eliminated everything which contains beef, they are everywhere even in Salmon Biscuits… after the elimination it went ok and we even got a second dog.
Everything was going well. He had some problems with teeth (bad shape, due to bad start and medicine there) and his temper like food protection or barking at cars / bikes, but it was fine and he got a good checkup every year including titer tests which were always ok. His health started to decline in the summer of 2023. He started limping on his front feed and was eating worse. We also noticed 2-3 weird spots on his skin which seems like hotspots. The vet told he was a bit heavy, he had a stiff neck and his intestines were a bit puzzled. A few sessions of acupuncture, good washing and balanced diet could help him, and it did help him for a few weeks.
In the winter his health suddenly declined and the weird spots on his skin increased and expanded over his entire body with crusts. He was losing a lot of hair. After a few vet visits, some medicine and some tests we discovered that he was highly allergy for almost everything you could imagine. This was a big message for me and my wife as it would mean we should change in the house a lot while we also have a other dog who lived the same life in perfect health. We switched to special hypoallergenic dog food of Hills so he does not react on that food and keep the other dog on his current food. We had to lock both pets apart and clean up where the other pet and also where we ate so he can’t get any other food in his stomach.
This worked for a few weeks. He remained happy when someone is home, we went to the forest or beach regularly and if I leave the house I always wants to be back as soon as possible to see my family again. I mainly work from home, so the two pets are always around and I have a deep emotional connection with them.
Unfortunately, the spots came back rapidly and he was shaking a lot. His teeth’s were also declining rapidly and his movement worsened that he could jump on the couch anymore and the stairs are done step for each step. We shifted from dexamethasone to Prednisone to see any difference, but recently we came to the conclusion that this and other treatments are not giving the results we and the vet wants. I was still looking for possible solutions, but my wife (had dogs in the past) and vet intervened that he is sick and everything we are doing could at the best only suppress symptoms, we were not making him better. EDIT: The vet said we were doing everything right on food, health etc. But basically his immune system is failing and not doing what it is supposed to do.
This week we decided to put him down. He will get his final rest next Saturday, on his fifth birthday. I’m devastated and keep crying that it is going to happen. Never had a pet during my youth and I’m just worried about the gap of the unconditional love he will leave. I’m also worried about my second dog who never has been alone and plays a lot with him and what this change will do with him.
While I’m writing this, my dog is sitting next to me and shaking. I find it very difficult he is passing at such a young age and weird thoughts are going through my mind if i could have prevented this, do things differently or anything to expand his time here with us. No matter what, I love him and keep carrying the awesome memories and the times he dragged me and my wife through really hard times in my heart. I saw this community and all the kind messages and advices, i thought i would give it a go also with my story and I’m open for advices on how to deal with the pain and some possible ideas to keep him close with me even if he is not there anymore.

2024.05.14 14:42 a4fertility What can someone expect during their first fertility counseling appointment?

Feeling nervous about your first fertility counseling appointment? Don't worry, it's normal! Here's what you can expect:
Getting to Know You
The first visit is all about getting to know you and your partner. The doctor will ask lots of questions about:
The Physical Exam
Next, you'll probably have a physical exam. For women, this might include a pelvic exam to check the reproductive organs. For men, it might include a testicular exam.
Possible Tests
The doctor might also suggest some tests:
Talking About Your Options
The doctor will discuss any possible causes of infertility and talk about your options. This might include lifestyle changes, medication, or procedures like IVF.
Asking Questions
Remember, this is your chance to ask any questions you have. Don't be afraid to speak up, and make sure you understand everything.
What to bring
Feeling Supported
It's important to remember that you're not alone. Many couples face fertility challenges, and there are many resources available to help.
The first appointment can be overwhelming, but it's a step in the right direction. Be open and honest with your doctor, ask questions, and remember that there's hope.

2024.05.14 14:41 birrachips Can you help me unravel this situation?

I had two driving instructors, A and B.
Instructor A was being a creep and flirting with me (Trust my word, I've already asked for opinions on him here...)
The night before my driving test I went to driving school to pay for the exam and he was there and came to give me a side hug but then "squeezed" me and I just freezed, felt uncomfortable , and it made me angry/sad.
I didn't get the support I needed from my closest friends and my mom during those months, and when this happened just before the exam I had no one to talk to. So I felt like shit because all of this, and the last drive with instructor B the following day was really bad.
Instructor B sort of helped me pass my test by making me go last so that I would avoid traffic at a certain hour and stuff. I could drive perfectly, but as I said the last drive before the test on that same day didn't go too well and I was very nervous (instructor A was there too).
This sort of changed my perception about instructor B that day. He caught me looking at him twice while waiting for the examinator and he'd nod at me. I felt sort of calmer around him actually, I remember he got there late and I was waiting with other instructors and kept looking around for him.
I felt overwhelmed cause apart from instructor A, even B seemed to start orbiting around me. Maybe he was just trying to help me, but I felt like he was paying more attention to me than his other student for example. And the attention from A added to that.
B had to choose between me and a younger guy to go last and he chose me. When finished he drove me home and explained "it was a way to protect you" and said it twice, both times leaving those words half said as if he was struggling to say it. But still he decided to say it twice, he could have said nothing at all or could have just said "I was trying to help you". Is it just me or the words "protect you" were a bit too important in that context?
I know I was overwhelmed but still can't tell if he was genuinely helping me, as I said I could actually drive perfectly. Those words seemed calculated to me..? I don't understand. I even bumped into him like twice and felt sort of embarrassed, I just can't say hi to him, but that day when he drove me home he was really sweet apart from the protecting stuff. He kept chatting and smiling, I remember feeling good for days. So I feel guilty for not talking to him 😭 and crazy

What Is System Patching
https://preview.redd.it/x6uygc2zzd0d1.png?width=768&format=png&auto=webp&s=71f6f0aced3752360f486f6bf1ee9cc689d4d417
System patching is the process of applying updates, fixes, or patches to the software, firmware, or hardware of a computer system or network infrastructure. Patching a system encompasses several components, including the operating system (OS), applications, drivers, firmware, and other software components.
In this article, we explore the importance of system patching for data security for individuals and businesses alike. Also, we give best practices to patch the system and the benefits of system patching.

What does it mean to patch a system?

Patching a system means that you will download and install the updates provided by the vendor or manufacturer to ensure the system remains secure, stable, and up-to-date.
This process is essential for maintaining the integrity and functionality of the system. It helps mitigate potential risks posed by security threats and ensures that the system operates efficiently.

What does patching up your PC mean?

Patching up your PC is the same as system patching: it refers to the process of applying software patches or updates to your computer’s operating system, applications, drivers, and firmware.
Patching up your PC helps ensure that your computer remains secure, stable, and up-to-date with the latest features and improvements.

Best practices for deploying patches

By following best practices, organizations can effectively deploy system patches to enhance security, stability, and performance while minimizing disruption to business operations.
https://preview.redd.it/a060kjh10e0d1.png?width=614&format=png&auto=webp&s=6a29cce25883fe13439aea81ac0de6dd5c2f8188

1. Take an inventory of assets

Maintain an up-to-date inventory of all hardware and software assets within your organization, including servers, endpoints, and network devices.
This inventory should include details such as asset type, status, location, software titles, versions, and warranties.

2. Create a patch management policy

Develop a comprehensive patch management policy that outlines procedures for obtaining, testing, installing, scheduling, and prioritizing patches.
A policy can ensure consistency in patch management practices across the organization.

3. Assign priority levels

Establish clear criteria for prioritizing patches based on severity and potential impact.
You can, for example, identify critical assets, such as production servers and systems exposed to external threats, and prioritize patching for these assets.

4. Consolidate software versions

Consolidating software versions simplifies patch management and reduces complexity.
Whenever possible, standardize on specific versions of operating systems, third-party software, and custom applications across endpoints and servers.

5. Schedule routine patch application

Develop a regular schedule for applying non-critical patches that minimize disruption to users and business operations. Make sure to communicate patching schedules to users and stakeholders to manage expectations.

6. Roll out patches gradually

Always deploy patches gradually to avoid overloading systems and degrading performance. Phasing the rollout of patches and scheduling deployments during off-peak hours minimizes disruption and allows users to keep their work as expected.

7. Test patches before application

Testing helps identify potential issues, errors, or incompatibilities that could impact system stability or functionality.
So, prioritize thorough testing of patches in a controlled environment before deploying them to production systems.

8. Stay up-to-date with updates and patches

Missing critical patches can expose systems to vulnerabilities and security risks.
For this reason, establish processes for monitoring and staying informed about new patches, updates, and security advisories for all software used within the organization.

9. Conduct post-deployment reviews

After patch deployment, you should conduct reviews to identify any issues or unexpected consequences. You can establish a rollback plan to revert changes if necessary and address any issues promptly.

10. Continuous improvement

Regularly review and update patch management processes and procedures to incorporate lessons learned and address emerging threats.
Consider investing in automated patch management tools to streamline and optimize patching workflows.

What is system patching used for?

System patching is used primarily for enhancing the security, stability, and performance of computer systems.
Among the many solutions and benefits provided by patching a system, you can find:

Cost savings

Proactively patching systems can help organizations avoid the costs associated with security incidents, data breaches, system downtime, and remediation efforts.

Enhance security

System patching is crucial for addressing software security vulnerabilities and preventing cyber attacks. These vulnerabilities are weaknesses in the code that attackers can use to gain unauthorized access to systems, steal data, or install malware. Patching also reduces the chances of the system being a target of zero-day attacks.

Zero-day attack

A zero-day attack is when hackers exploit a security flaw in software before the software vendor even knows it exists, making it very difficult to defend against.

Bug fixes

Patching is used to fix bugs, glitches, and errors that may cause software applications or operating systems to crash, malfunction, or exhibit unexpected behavior.

Mitigate vulnerabilities

Regular patching helps organizations mitigate known vulnerabilities, stay ahead of potential threats, and reduce the risk of security breaches and data breaches.

Performance optimization

System patches often include performance improvements and optimizations that enhance the speed, efficiency, and responsiveness of operating systems and software applications.

Feature updates

Feature updates provided through patches offer users access to new capabilities, improved user interfaces, and enhanced compatibility with other software or hardware.

Compliance and regulations

System patching is essential for maintaining compliance with industry regulations, data protection laws, and security standards.

What is the difference between a patch and an update?

A patch is a small piece of software designed to fix or improve a specific issue in an existing program or system. It typically addresses a particular bug, vulnerability, or performance problem.
On the other hand, an update is a broader term that refers to a collection of changes or enhancements made to a software program or system. Updates can include multiple patches, as well as new features, improvements, and bug fixes.

How does system patching relate to security, stability, performance, and availability?

Security: Patches are often released to address security vulnerabilities discovered in software or operating systems. By applying patches promptly, users can mitigate the risk of exploitation by cyber attackers, protect sensitive data, and prevent unauthorized access to the system.
Stability: Software bugs or glitches can cause crashes, freezes, or other malfunctions, leading to system instability. Regularly applying patches ensures that known issues are resolved, resulting in a more reliable and consistent computing experience.
Performance: Some patches include optimizations or enhancements that improve the efficiency and speed of software execution.
Availability: Patching plays a role in maintaining system availability by reducing the likelihood of downtime due to security breaches, software failures, or other issues.

What are the risks of not patching a system?

The risks of not patching a system are multifaceted and can have far-reaching consequences. One of the primary risks is the exposure to security vulnerabilities that remain vulnerable to exploitation by cyber attackers who can infiltrate networks, steal sensitive data, install malware, or carry out other malicious activities such as ransomware. These security breaches can result in financial losses, damage to reputation, and legal consequences for affected parties.
In addition to security risks, unpatched systems can experience decreased performance, frequent errors, and system crashes. This can result in lost productivity for users and organizations and increased IT support and maintenance costs.

2024.05.14 14:34 traumfisch Something New

Something New
I don't know what to do with this, so I'll just ad lib:
Two things happened to me on Saturday. I finally learned to apply a certain technique to reset my vagus nerve and access what's called the ventral vagal state. This is a huge deal for me since I have been dealing with a hypersensitive nervous system all my life. (Highly recommended btw, especially for any HSPs out there)
On the same day, I started exploring Udio. The vagus nerve technique thingy was the top thing on my mind, so I half accidentally made a song about it... just to have some lyrics...
And now, the song suddenly has a lot of personal meaning for me. Things like validation, affirmation... That was unexpected. It seems to open up a completely new approach and function of music generation, almost like a magick practice. As in, I suddenly feel like feeding it all my wishes and thoughts and aspirations 😄
Maybe I'm being ridiculous, I'm still processing it, but I also like this song musically a lot, so I thought I'd share it here.
Weird times!
