I'm moving out of my martial home next week. The break up has been largely amicable, but I've started noticing that every thing I've done with my transition had been noted as something men also do. Growing long hair, "men can also have long hair". Painting nails "men paint their nails". The list goes on. Today I had my vacuum cleaner delivered and I gave my deadname to the delivery driver. He's a stranger, I'm dysphoric today, not looking too fem, didn't feel like outing myself. The house has a video doorbell. This is the message conversation that followed. (E = EX, M=me)
E:Is that your package or mine M: Hooover M: So mine lol E: You names nit deadname!!!!!!! M: it's complicated when it comes to giving name to strangers when you don't look how you want to E: michelle is also a mans name E: Michelle can have nicknames like Mic, Chelle, Mich, Mischa, Mish, Missy, Mitch, Mishi, Shell, and Shelly. The name is predominantly a girl’s name but is used as a male name in some Latin and non-English-speaking European countries. The name bears Biblical significance too. M: So? I'll do what I feel comfortable at the time.
No response from that. I just feel like I shouldn't have to justify myself when I'm trying to protect my own feelings.

CHAPTER 9 – ENTROPY
DATE: MARCH 10th, 7 A.U. (AFTER UNIFICATION) LOCATION: SOL SYSTEM, ABOARD UTRN INDOMITABLE WILL
CAPTAIN HENRY O’TOOLE
"Ah, there you are Commander. Your message said there was something you wanted to talk with me about, right?" Henry asked as his executive officer approached the system map.
“Aye Captain, now's a good a time as any. As you know, the rate of disciplinary incidents has more than tripled in the last two weeks. We've had six fistfights, one near strangling, a few dozen counts of sexual harassment amongst different parties, and a few more incidents of a nature that I would rather not get into for fear of derailing the point of this conversation. I need additional resources to allocate towards ship internal security. With your permission, I'd like to borrow some of our more trusted marines to help the MA's out on their off shifts.” Commander Alvarez asked.
“Yeah, of course, take what you need to nip this in the bud. I can't say I'm entirely surprised; we expected a certain amount of this with the stresses of FTL travel. With everyone cooped up like this, maybe we should brainstorm some new outlets for the crew. Were there any specific incidents I need to get involved with?” Henry replied as he looked up from the list of updates and reports on his own console.
“No, I have it covered. It's just the regs state I need to ask permission to use marines for internal security matters.” The Commander waved it off.
“Excellent, continue to keep me in the loop then. Can I ask you a question?” Henry took the opportunity to ask something that had been bothering him.
“You just did. Hah! Just kidding, put the axe away boy! Now what would you like to know?” He said with a twinkle in his eye.
“I've seen your file, well, the parts that weren’t redacted anyway. If anything, I should be taking your orders! I mean, you're the Space Wolf! Nobody came even close to the number of ships captured or destroyed than you in the early days of the battle for the belt. Why would they want me to be captain when they had someone like you coming along the whole time? Why aren't you a captain anymore? By all right this should be your command, not mine.” Henry asked, after taking one last look around to verify they were still alone around the system map.
Commander Alvarez seemed stunned for a moment before he settled into a more pensive look.
“Listen, son, you're all full of the vigor and high passions of youth. By that I mean you've got a certain fire and aggression in you, yet I've seen you keep it balanced by wit and wisdom. You are a perfect match for the job, even if you could use some more real world experience. With some guidance, you'll do just fine, if you can keep strict standards for yourself and crew and a cool head when things get tough. I... got a lot of damn good men and women killed in an impossible situation when we lost the Michigan-II, and I never truly got over it. No amount of medals, captured enemy ships, or the fact that I've saved many more lives than I lost can make up for that. I finally found peace with that, but that peace required that I relieve myself of any chance of future command. My legacy, for better or worse, is set in stone. Joining this expedition gives me another chance at adjusting the scales without breaking my former vows, even if the only people who will ever know it are here on the voyage with us.”
“So, you claim you have no aims or desires for leadership, but here you are a mere heartbeat away from it.” Henry said, carefully studying his executive officer's every reaction.
“My time for glory is mostly gone, yours is at your feet before you. To the world, I am retired in comfort and isolation. In reality you have me here to help make your will law. You can relax. I already turned down command of this expedition. I was plan A, why do you think they had to scramble to find you? I will take command of this mission only if you are incapable of doing so yourself, Sir. In the meantime, let my experience and whatever wisdom I can offer guide you.”
An emergency alert snapped both of their attention out of their conversation. "There's a fire in one of the officer's cabins?!" Henry’s pulse quickened as he referenced the map to find which one.
“Fuck, it started in Chantal’s room!” Henry said, horrified.
“I've got the CIC under control. Go on and get her, I'll ensure help is on the way!”
“Thank you, Commander.” Henry called back over his shoulder as he rushed for the quick lift.
The officer cabins were the in the very next deck overhead, so he was able to arrive quickly and break into a sprint. The ship shifted as it dodged some antimatter, causing Henry to slip and scramble back to his feet. As he rounded the corner he saw her door was closed and the keypad powered was off. He could hear thumps and muffled screaming from within the room.
"HANG ON CHANTAL, I'M COMING!" Henry shouted in the hope that she could hear him as he pried at the manual override panel.
Two modified Paladin exo-combat armor suits rounded the corner seconds later with a hospitalman trailing behind pushing a medical cart.
"WE'LL TAKE IT FROM HERE, SIR." A speaker-amplified voice spoke from behind him.
One of the Paladin suits accessed the manual control override and forced the door open enough for the other suit to reach in and pry it the rest of the way open as smoke plumed into the corridor. The second suit charged into the room with its flood lights on as a water cannon mounted on the right wrist sprayed flame retardant from a pack on its back. The first suit abandoned the door control and entered, emerging moments later with Chantal awake and coughing from inside the darkened door frame. She was quickly ushered into cleaner air, set gently down, wrapped in a blanket, and was quickly attended to by a hospitalman who began to check her vitals.
Relief flooded Henry’s mind as his adrenaline surge broke against the wall of worry he had built up during his mad dash from the CIC.
“Baby you came for me! I honestly thought I was going to die for a moment in there." She pulled him into a tight embrace as she wept in cathartic release.
"Of course I did! I couldn't stand to lose you, especially not over something like this. So, what the hell happened in there?"
"Well you know me, I was all burning the midnight oil and then I smelled smoke! Then there were some sparks, the outlet pops then whoosh! My computer station and my desk are all ablaze along with half my notes, then the damned door wouldn't work! I had to drop to the floor under the smoke and pound on the door in hopes that someone would hear me. God, it was horrible... I don't think I've ever been so scared in my life." She replied with a deep shudder.
"You're safe now, it's going to be alright."
"I know, but what about my work?" She replied with a forlorn look back at her smoke damaged room.
"What about your work?"
"As you know, I lost a ton of it just now, but what’s worse is I don't even have the ability to recover them! Remember how I lost my backup drive last week? Like, I know I packed it and it is not here anywhere! It’s like some sick cosmic joke on me or something. Sorry! Gotta keep it positive, girl! I get to rethink my last few weeks’ worth of work from scratch... that was almost positive! I probably have most of this recoverable from email sent box backups. Fuck, what do you do if there's no good silver lining?” Chantal bemoaned.
Henry couldn’t help himself but laugh for a second, while his girlfriend stared at him, waiting for a response.
“I’m sorry, is this funny to you or something?”
“No, no of course not. This might be one of those times where the only silver lining is that you're alive. Plus, if anyone can remember and rebuild their notes, you can." Henry smiled down at her.
“Fine, fine, at least I am alive. I was only breathing smoke for a few seconds after all.” She said, rolling her eyes. “Thank you for rushing down here right away anyway, it means a lot. You're amazing, you know.”
Henry smiled, slightly uncomfortable for a moment, so he changed the subject.
“I do my best... Anyway, it seems like these electrical issues seem to be getting worse instead of better. Whatever patch these clowns have slapped on my ship to get her to pass inspection is clearly coming undone. What do you think is going on here?” Henry asked in mild exasperation.
“Honestly, I can’t tell you without digging into the systems myself, which I would rather avoid. My plate is full enough as it is right now, especially having to reproduce so much of my own work now. This ship has kilometers of power cables running throughout it, after all, and you have an entire loyal, capable team down there in electrical, so it should only be a matter of time before they sort it out for you. Let them do their jobs without harassing them too much, please?”
Henry felt a little irked at her for not giving him credit to know not to go overboard, but he stowed it, seeing as she was right.
“The crew has been under a lot of stress, too, having technical issues with the lights going out, or losing power to workstations. More than a few people have tried to convince me to turn us around and return to S33 for a more in-depth refit and repair cycle before we try the mission again. So far, everyone has accepted the fact that we are not turning back now without much argument, but I fear what may happen if these issues are seen as getting worse. Our orders are clear, though, we must continue the journey.” Henry said, uncomfortable with the implications, even if he didn't dare voice it.
“You should get on the Q-Comm to report the fire to S33. Maybe they will order us back to base after this.” She offered, looking for a solution to an impossible problem.
“Good idea, at least the Q-Comm is still working. It’s incredible to me those particles maintained their entanglement once we passed through the baryonic barrier. That alone has been a huge morale boost, being able to contact home base with no time lag.” Henry replied.
“It’s incredible to you because you only have a basic grasp of the science, hon. But that’s alright, very few people truly understand it. That’s in part what you have me here for anyway. Einstein called the effect spooky action from a distance; I always liked that line.”
Henry ran his fingers through his hair and looked at Chantal, with a shake of his head and a smile.
“Listen, Henry, I just had a crazy stressful experience and I need to unwind. Plus, I haven’t slept in almost a day, so I am bone tired. Let’s go to bed, huh? What do you say doc, am I clear to go?” Chantal asked.
The hospitalman closed her eyes and shook her head before responding. "Yes, you are cleared to rest, only to rest, do you understand me?"
Chantal mouthed a thank you before she took Henry by the hand and led him off to the captain’s quarters. Henry felt no desire to fight it, nor flaw with her reasoning. Sleep sounded good, really good. Plus, he was about an hour from the start of his sleep shift anyway, and Alvarez had the CIC well covered. The lights flickered again, but Henry very purposefully ignored it.
“Hey, since we have a little time and we are both a little wound up, Why don’t we take a shower together real quick?” She said with genuine enthusiasm and a wink.
“Madam, I like the way you think.” The couple raced just a bit faster than regulations would have liked, and arrived at his door in record speed. Inside the room they fell upon each other in great passion and need, stripping each other out of their BDU’s and underclothes. Henry tossed a giggling Chantal onto the bed, kissing her neck and nibbling on her ear causing her to purr in anticipation before he moved down her chest, past her navel, and then eagerly began to move his kisses in between her thighs.
“Hah…. I haven’t showered. Are you sure? Oooookay! I think…. Hah…. Okay.” She said breathlessly as Henry began to work his tongue until she began to shiver and squirm before she cried out and melted in his mouth.
“Enough, please, I can’t take it anymore! Just fuck me already!” Chantal pulled herself together enough to beg for it. Henry stood rigid and ready and set himself to granting her request, first slowly, and with a growing intensity. She once more began to squirm as he paid close attention to her hip’s cues, knowing very well by now what she liked.
As she climaxed again, Henry lifted her from the bed and pushed her up against the wall, and then bent her over his desk for a bit before he could take it no longer and they finished together.
“Holy shit… my legs aren’t gonna work for a bit after that one. Help me up?” Chantal said in between shallow breaths.
“Yes, ma’am. It would be my pleasure.” Henry said as he helped her to her feet and into the shower, staying in longer than was strictly necessary.
Henry left the steam first, once more thankful that his cabin included its own small bathroom, rather than a communal one. Being captain had its perks, after all. He grabbed a towel and wrapped it around his waist, then handed another to Chantal who gratefully accepted it before it dropped to the ground as she stared straight past him.
“Henry!" She squeaked as she pointed past him.
"What?" Henry asked, confused.
"Henry, someone was in here!”
On their bathroom mirror, wiped from the steam were the words TURN BACK.
Henry's blood ran cold and his adrenaline spiked him into overdrive. He waved Chantal back into the shower and put his finger to his lips. She nodded then wrapped herself in her retrieved towel and dropped to the shower floor with her arms wrapped around her knees, whimpering slightly. Henry moved silently along the wall, watching the visible half of his room for any movement. He then burst round the door frame, only to find everything perfectly, precisely as they had left it. The shock of finding nothing collided with the spike of his adrenaline surge, which only fed his growing unease.
“There’s nobody here!” Henry called out after checking the closet, the only other place someone could have hidden.
“Did you lock the door?” Chantal asked, her mind already working on the mystery.
“I set the security protocol to auto lock every time it closes.”
“Paul. We need to talk to Paul.” Chantal said, squeezing her BDU’s up over her hips with a few hops. Henry pulled on his undershirt before tossing over hers.
“Why would we want to bring that weasel into this?” Henry asked, incredulous at to how he could possibly help.
“Because he has access to the surveillance tapes, why else?”
Henry stared at Chantal, brimming with rage, trying his hardest to keep it isolated to Paul over the invasion of his privacy.
“Did you just say surveillance tapes!?!” Henry asked in an icy tone. “That does it, I’m going to strangle him.” Henry said, moving with a purpose toward the door.
“Stop. Turn around and give me a kiss. I already disabled the video cameras, at least all the ones I could find. He has audio at best, even that I doubt. What he does have that I want is the data from the motion sensor that he had installed just in case you found the more obvious bugs. Unfortunately, I sabotaged its effectiveness by blocking the sensor with dense foam, but there might be enough of something to give us a clue."
“How in the hell do you know about all of this anyway, and why the hell didn’t you tell me?!” Henry roared.
“This entire enterprise is run by an intelligence agency; how can you not have seen that one coming a mile away? I have gotten very good at catching bugs over the years. Just because I expect the invasion of privacy to be happening, doesn’t mean I have to make it easy on them.” She replied firmly while staring him in the eyes with raised eyebrows.
“You’re incredible, I love you.” Henry blurted out before he could catch himself. Chantal beamed and tackled him to the bed sitting on his lap.
“What took you so long? Never mind, don’t answer that. I love you too, I have wanted to say that one for a while now.”
“You know these things aren’t easy for me. I had to be sure, I also didn’t want to mess anything up. We need to be able to work together even if we had turned out to be a bad couple.” Henry admitted, Chantal made an show as she thought it over, but she then smiled and helped Henry to his feet.
“Alright, my captain. You speak great wisdom. While I have certainly felt, and thoroughly enjoyed, the depths of your passion, it is really nice to hear about it too. I do think it makes it all the better that you rule said passion with reason. It’s one of the many things I love about you.” She said, laying her hand over his heart.
Henry took her other hand and kissed it before replying. “I think above all, I wanted to make sure that I didn’t take you for granted, nor suffer the same in reverse. A wise woman once gave me some great advice there that I have taken to heart.”
“Okay, Romeo, maybe you have a better handle on these things than you think. Now… Let’s go interrogate Paul.” Chantal had a fire in her eyes that Henry was loving very much at that moment.
“I have wanted to turn the screws on that spook for a while now.” Henry smiled as he spoke, and he opened up the connection to the ship’s intranet through his neural implant to send a message.
MEET ME IN YOUR QUARTERS IN 5 MINUTES FOR A DISCUSSION OF CRITICAL IMPORTANCE – CPT. O'TOOLE
“That ought to get him there and alone.” Henry smirked. “Let’s go.”
Together, they made their way to Paul’s equivalent-sized quarters, which he had somehow secured for himself in the ship design to help facilitate his role as the official thorn in Henry’s paw. I guess being the captain’s handler has its perks as well. Henry’s eye twitched at the corner.
After making them wait far too long, Paul opened the door and gesturing them inside. The door closed and Paul turned towards them, narrowing his eyes, studying them both.
“Is this about the fire?” Paul asked before Henry punched the weasel right in the diaphragm, forcing him to gasp for air. The look of shock on his face as he bent forwards was priceless.
“What the fuck, Henry!?” Paul managed to choke out after a minute between gasps.
“Relax, I didn’t do any permanent damage, yet.” Henry said, Paul for just a second showed actual fear in his eyes before he sneered in defiance. “Oh? That got your attention, did it? Why were you spying on me?” Henry growled.
Paul closed his eyes, dropped his head, and began to laugh before Henry grabbed him by the throat and slammed him into the wall. Foolishly, Paul even then kept laughing amidst the gasping. So Henry squeezed until Paul started slapping his arm, looking genuine fear once more growing across his face.
“Orders… I was following orders!” Paul managed to say amidst gasps and coughs.
“I thought it might be something like that. You're going to open up those files, now, and you're going to show me everything.” Henry said, dropping him to his feet at last.
“Fucking hell, Henry, I thought you of all people would have anticipated this was going to be the case. Do you think the people who made this all possible would simply let you fly around the most dangerous, advanced warship in human history without some insurance?”
“Don’t try and weasel out of your own personal culpability here. You may also want to think back to other people who were “only following orders” while performing acts they knew were wrong before you wave that line around like some get out of jail free card.” The fact that he had nothing to say spoke volumes.
“You should have told me Paul.” Henry growled.
“That defeats the purpose! Plus, your girlfriend sabotaged them all before we ever left S33 anyway, and once more after! That type of tech doesn’t just grow on trees you know, and I don’t have an unlimited supply. You should be thanking me for covering for her and reporting back like things are normal!” Paul shouted in indignation.
“This is pointless, show me the files from around fifteen minutes ago, motion trackers, thermals, anything you have that's not blocked or sabotaged.” Henry commanded. Paul’s eyes narrowed, but after a long moment he huffed and closed his eyes. Paul then sat down at his station and fired it up.
“Like I said, I've got practically nothing. No video, muffled audio and readings from what I assume to be a faulty motion sensor, that’s it. What are we looking for?”
“Chantal and I were, well, together. After we got out of the shower we saw that someone had written turn back in the condensation on the bathroom mirror. Only problem? My door auto locks when closed and only opens for my biometrics. That is why all of this even came up in the first place.”
“Motherfucker. That's a whole heap of bad news.” Paul said. Henry merely nodded, paying rather more attention to the screen to see if he could catch Paul in a lie about the extent of the spying.
“There’s nothing. No disturbances in the air that would even remotely resemble human movement between you two getting in the shower and you charging into your bedroom. With the noise of the shower and the distance to the microphone, there is nothing I can discern that is anomalous. You can see it all right here for yourself.”
Henry found himself even more confused and alarmed than before.
“How is that possible? Look again, run through some filters or something. There must be some evidence somewhere!”
“Alright, relax, I will get to work on this and get you a report by the end of C shift. In the meantime, you look like a mess. Get some sleep man! I can take care of it from here. Oh, and I want you to remember that I forgave you quite magnanimously for that little episode back there where you attacked me.” Henry and Chantal gave each other a look as Paul spoke.
“Wasn’t gonna apologize anyway, you had it coming. I’m going to hit the rack. I expect that report to be detailed and ready when I get up.” Henry took Chantal by the hand, and they left together, not waiting for a response.
“What a snake. Did you see him in there? Zero guilt or recognition whatsoever about spying like that. It just makes my skin crawl. Gives me bad memories.” Chantal said, turning pensive and quiet.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Henry asked, seeing that there was something clearly bothering her.
“I… had an uncle that lived with us from time to time and he would spy on me when I was dressing, try and sneak looks in the shower, stuff like that. Never touched me or anyone else that I know of, thank god, but man did it screw me up a bit still. Played havoc with my sense of security and even my sanity, never being quite sure it was real. I wish I had said something, but I was afraid everyone would think I was overreacting or imagining it. I saw it in his eyes though, that look of... predatory lust. At least I didn't see anything like that in Paul's eyes. To this day it makes my skin crawl.”
“Good God, I can see how alone you must have felt in the middle of all that.” He squeezed her hand, she smiled up at him.
“Yeah, that was one of the hardest parts. I don’t think Paul is some raging pervert or anything, but it concerns me how normal it was to him. Even if he isn’t being a creep with it, as if we can take his claims to be covering for me at face value. There is still no way I am going to let him have easy access to intimate videos of us, if I can possibly help it.” Chantal said before adding, “I’ll be all right, don’t worry about me. Let’s just get some sleep.”
Henry put his palm against the biometric scanner outside his room and the door slid open for them. They definitely needed some sleep after the emotional roller coaster of the past few hours, and the irresistible warm embrace of his bed called for him. The Q-Comm report could wait until he woke, he decided. Better to have the electrical inspection done too.
I WANT A FULL REPORT AND INSPECTION PERFORMED ON THE ELECTRICAL FIRE IN CHANTAL’S ROOM BY THE START OF A SHIFT. – CAPT. O'TOOLE
Good enough. Henry thought as he sent the message. Now he could sleep. The chief would handle it.
SEVERAL HOURS LATER…
DATE : MARCH 10th, 7 A.U. LOCATION: SOL SYSTEM, ABOARD UTRN INDOMITABLE WILL
FIREMAN APPRENTICE SARAH CALLAHAN
It'll be back again tonight...
Sarah’s haunted thoughts repeated like a mantra. She had to be ready, but how? Her skin crawled and itched, the long sleeves of her BDU’s prevented her from being able to do anything about the painful sensation from the inflamed scratches they hid. She blearily rubbed at her sunken eyes, and she drained the rest of her coffee. All the numbers on the screen had started bleeding in together and her eyes hurt horribly, with the throbbing pain in her abdomen only compounding her misery.
“My god, Sarah, you look a wreck, hon. How have you been sleeping?” Yvonne, her shift partner asked, with concern in her voice.
“I have a monster tension headache, if the meds are going to kick in, I hope it’s soon. Can you check my math? I need to get out of these white lights for a few minutes. Close my eyes for a bit, something, anything. I've been having nightmares again.” Sarah felt good, being able to admit it, and Yvonne had long since proven her friendship, so it was easier to actually speak.
“Yeah, no prob. As soon as I am done here I will check your readings and we can get out of here. Do you mean nightmares from the invasion?” Yvonne asked, carefully picking her words and tone.
“Kind of the same general themes, but different. Everything is going wrong, like the worst possible outcomes of my worst nightmares are all combining together. Like, it feels malicious, I don't know, its hard to explain...” Sarah said, bleakly.
“That’s hard, I am sorry. You need a shower, and an uninterrupted nap. Sleep deprivation plays all kinds of hell on the body and mind. I had a friend who went through an insomniac phase so extreme he would go days without sleeping. Wound up in the hospital after trying to drive to work while hallucinating his dead fiancée was sitting in the passenger seat screaming at him to watch out. Wound up rear-ending the car in front of him. Thank God he lived to tell the tale, but that is why it worries me to see you like this.” Yvonne planted her hand on Sarah’s shoulder as she told the story.
“Yikes, I think I slept like two hours into my sleep shift before I started having the nightmares again, woke up, and passed in and out of some restless sleep. It got really bad around oh three hundred. There were sounds... noises like scratching and a loud bang, and the shadows were moving. I just kept feeling like I was being watched, but everyone else seemed to be having disturbed sleep in their bunks. God, it was a creepy feeling.” Sarah took a moment to compose herself.
“I know how crazy this will sound, maybe that I am sleep deprived and likely hallucinating like your friend, but just hear me out. There was something there Yvonne, in the dark at the edge of perception, I could feel it. I also know I wasn’t the only one tossing and turning either. I could also hear scratchy whispering, too. I just hid, strapped in under the weighted blanket. At some point I slept some more, I must have, but not for what felt like a few stressful and draining hours. I'm just making a total mess of explaining this, aren’t I?”
“No, you're fine, girl! I am sorry that happened, my dorm has been pretty quiet, but I have always slept like a rock. Is there anything I can do?”
“I could use a hug.” Sarah said, which caused Yvonne to laugh, breaking some of the tension. They embraced warmly for a good minute, which did wonders for relieving some of the headache and her black mood.
“Thanks, Yvonne, I know it’s all in my head and it’s a vicious feedback cycle due to lack of quality sleep. Thanks for listening without calling me crazy.“ Sarah said, shying away from the last thing she hadn’t the courage to say.
She didn’t dare mention how she had hidden under the covers as she felt it get near. How she had felt something pushing on the mattress. How as her fear peaked, she herself peeked over the covers to find nothing there just to have the oppressive feeling evaporate along with the sensation of pressure by her feet. Her dorm mates all seemed to stop stirring after that, and only then did the nightmares stop for her that night. By then she was left with barely enough time for one last short sleep cycle before the start of A shift that very morning. This was a secret she would have to keep to herself, nobody would believe her anyway.
“I think I'll ask the Chief for a break from my duties today to rest and to visit med bay. Maybe they can give me something to help catch back up on my sleep.” Sarah said.
“Good idea, can I come with? I’ll back you up.” Yvonne said. Sarah smiled at her friend before she nodded at her before they checked off the last of their duties on site and headed away to find the Chief.

2024.05.15 12:28 Imaginary_Owl8552 My unoccupied vehicle was hit in a parking lot (Missouri), and I was not notified

I am in the state of Missouri.
My (37F) unoccupied vehicle Black, mid size SUV) was parked in a sport club parking lot on Saturday morning while I was at practice. When my practice was finished, I got in my car and drove home.
Later that day, a friend pointed out damage to my driver side tail light. I was certain it had not been there before Saturday.
I reached out to the club (at which I am a member) where my vehicle was parked, knowing they had recently installed security cameras. By late Saturday night, they reviewed the footage, and communicated that one camera caught the accident and aftermath (further from my vehicle), and one caught the audio of the accident and aftermath (nearer to my vehicle). There were multiple witnesses, and a clear shot of the license plate of the vehicle that hit me. I provided my email address so that he could share the footage with me.
On Sunday morning, upon further inspection to my car, I discovered damage to my bumper on the driver side, a decent-sized white scrape through my paint. I reviewed the footage myself, and the location and color of the scrape are consistent with the mechanism of the accident and color of the vehicle that hit me.
The footage captures me in the parking lot as well (everything is time stamped on the video). The parking lot was chaotic due to an unrelated event in the park. I stood in the parking lot for a few minutes before approaching my car to leave. Many other adults with whom I train can also be seen/heard in the parking lot footage. People were turning their cars around at the end on the lot past where my car was parked because the lot was full.
Long after I had left, two people (who I now know as the driver’s mother and brother) appear at the location. They have a conversation with the driver of the car that hit me. She had been sitting in her car in the lot, waiting for them to arrive.
On Sunday afternoon, I filed a police report in person with the municipality in which my vehicle was hit. I explained that I thought the driver of the car was young, the parking lot was chaotic, and at that time, I wasn’t interested in pressing charges. I simply wanted them to take responsibility for the accident and provide their insurance information to me.
The responding officer was able to make contact with the owner of the car. His 16-year-old daughter was driving at the time of the accident and admitted fault. The officer provided the owner’s phone number to me.
I reached out to the owner. Our conversation was brief. I asked for the insurance information. He replied that he’d rather pay for the repair directly because his daughter is a new driver and only 16 and he doesn’t want their insurance rate to go up. He asked if I was willing to do that. I was hesitant but understood, so I said, “Okay,” and agreed to call after I had an estimate for the repair.
After that call, I felt uneasy. I followed up via email with the responding officer for the police report. I emailed him the footage, and let him know that the owner refused to provide his insurance information. I also emailed the club to make sure they saved the footage in case it’s needed at a later date (they did).
The officer called me again not long after I emailed him and gave me the owner’s insurance policy number. I felt a bit better knowing that I have it just in case the situation got hairy.
His wife called me later Sunday evening. She was very nice and we spoke for 10 minutes. It became clear to me that they were under the impression that only my tail light was damaged. Her daughter said that her passenger mirror hit my car. I explained that I didn’t think that caused my damaged tail light, and that I thought she cut her turn short in a tight spot and wedged her vehicle up against mine which in turn put upward pressure on my tail light which caused it to break, and that there is also damage to my bumper. I explained that this was the damage I could see, and there could be more (my car is a 2019 SUV with cameras and sensors that I bought new).
I told her I would get an estimate this week and send it their way. She texted me her email address.
Monday I called our insurance agent to inform him of the accident and seek his advice. He encouraged me to file a claim, and advised how best to move forward if I did not make a claim.
Yesterday (Tuesday), I got the estimate for the repairs. It’s ~$2700, and the shop made it clear to me that it is not unusual to find more damage after disassembly. At the time of the repair, the estimate is to be paid up front, and the final balance upon pick up of the vehicle.
I forwarded the estimate to the owner’s wife, and in that email I expressed my preference to go through insurance.
She responded later that evening, and it is now clear to me that we are not on the same page. She doesn’t believe that the damage described in the estimate is consistent with her daughter’s recollection of events. She is asking me to send photos of the damage to my car, and is requesting the video footage from me. I am not inclined to do that, and I think it’s time to file the claim.
The driver did not notify me of the accident at the time of the accident in any way. She sat in her vehicle in a nearby parking spot waiting for her mom.
Is this considered a hit and run? I only know her identity because of the police report that I filed the next day and the footage.
The owner’s daughter is also a member at the club where I practice/train. My practice on Saturday is 8-10 am. Hers 10-12. We have the same coach. I am trying to leave the club out of it aside from accessing the security footage.
Will the insurance company want names of witnesses? I don’t have those, but the club could ask the girls who did witness it (also on footage) to come forward.
I’m just at a loss. I was trying to be nice and understanding and cooperative with their wishes. I thought I’d have the upper hand since I was not notified. Now I’m anxious about the entire situation, haven’t slept all night, and want to protect myself. I’m filing a claim today (Wednesday). How should I respond or do I even respond to her email?

2024.05.15 11:05 oSamiSrzo This week I learned my Dad possibly made the first ever short-film with Windows Movie Maker before it even released to the public

In the late 90's my Dad worked for Microsoft as a contractor, and he told me this story: He was hired to locate bugs, offer solutions & come up with features for a secret video editing project. He was constantly picked on by the Microsoft devs for complaining about the lack of features with the program, recalling them always saying how 'they were trying to make it something a grandma could use and don't want to make it complicated' and his feature ideas mostly got ignored. Still, some of his them did make it to official release. One day, he decided the best way to test the program would be to create a short film, using only the tools available during the developmental stage. It was 1999 and Star Wars the Phantom Menace had just been released. My dad obtained a copy of the film and spliced together one of those homemade fan-films that nerds make when they have nothing better to do.
He called it "Star Warz Episode None: Duel of the Fakes", and it was the whole shebang ... Face paint, props, stunts, lightsabers, and speederbikes... He re-created the Darth Maul fight scene with his friends & family in the backyard of his parent's house, using the trampoline for stunt flips and 'force-jumps' onto the roof. He even acquired a life-size cardboard cutout of R2-D2 from a toy store where his girlfriend (my mother) worked at. The store was throwing away promotional material for the movie, and my Mom saved it from the trash, and it was used in the short film. All in all, it's definitely one of those '90s nostalgia camcorder videotapes filled with young guys being dudes & having fun.
When the project was all said & done, he showed it to the dev team at Microsoft, and they loved it so much that the manager offered him to forget the contract job and work full time at Microsoft, which is how he started his career in software development, which is still his career to this day, albeit not at Microsoft anymore. He said for a day or two, he walked down the hallway and heard his film playing in every room. They brought it up for weeks and he even (supposedly) got an award from the dev team as a celebratory gesture to his work ... A few months later, Windows Movie Maker was released to the public.
He still has the original video he made, and it's technically uploaded to YouTube, but it's listed as private with no plans to make it public. I don't have any proof this story is true. I know for a fact based off family members confirming he indeed worked on Windows Movie Maker, and later Silverlight. It was a long time ago. I hadn't been born yet. I really do like to believe he impressed Microsoft with a Star Wars nerd film enough to get hired on the spot with no college degree. I should also mention that I don't know anything about Windows Movie Maker, as I quite literally learned about its existence from my Dad telling me this story the other day. Lol
The film is 10 minutes long, including bloopers & behind the scenes. Very well-edited.

2024.05.15 10:53 RatBarrage Some Notes on The Tale of the Student and His Son

First time reader of Wolfe and I'm having an amazing time working my way through shadow and claw. I had to read this chapter a couple times to try and grasp it; it's extremely dense. I'm still finishing Claw of the Concilliator so my thoughts may change. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
The Tale of the Student and His Son Analysis
“Once, upon the margin of the unpastured sea, there stood a city of pale towers.”
“In it dwelt the wise. Now that city had both law and curse.”
“The law was this: That for all who dwelt there, life held but two paths: they might rise among the wise and walk clad with hoods of myriad colors, or they must leave the city and go into the friendless world.”
“Now one there was who had studied long all the magic known in the city, which was most of the magic known in the world”
“And he grew near the time at which he must choose a path. In high summer, when flowers with yellow and careless heads thrust even from the dark walls overlooking the sea.”
“How may I - even I who know nothing - have a place among the wise of the city? For I wish to study spells that are not sacred all my days, and not go into the friendless world to dig and carry for bread”
“ Do you recall how, when you were hardly more than a boy, I taught you the art by which we flesh sons from dream stuff? How skillful you were in these days, surpassing all the others! Go now, and flesh such a son, and I will show it to the hooded ones, and you will be as we.”
“Winter came stalking into the land from his frozen capital, where the sun rolls along the edge of the world like a trumpery gilded ball and the fires that flow between the stars and Urth kindle the sky. His touch turned the waves to steel, and the city of the magicians welcomed him, hanging banners of ice from its balconies and heaping its roofs with glaces of snow.”
“In spring, the most beautiful maidens of the city, the daughters of the magicians, were clothed in green; and while the soft winds of spring teased their golden hair, they walked unshod through the portal of the city, and down the narrow path that led to the quay, and boarded the black-sailed ship that waited them. And because of their golden hair, and their gowns of green faille, and because it seemed to the magicians that they were reaped like grain, they were called Corn Maidens.”
“Looking from his window saw the maidens filing by, he set aside all his books and began to draw such figures as no man had ever seen, and to write in many languages, as his master had taught him aforetime.”
“ At first it seemed to him that all the skill his master had taught him of old had deserted him, for from the first light to the moonlight he was alone in his chambers save for the moth that fluttered sometimes to show the insignia of Death at his undaunted candle flame.
“Then there crept into his dreams another; and he, knowing who that other was, welcomed him, though the dreams were fleeting and soon forgotten.”
“Then the student dared turn himself where he sat, and he saw standing before him a youth haughty of port, wide of shoulder, and mighty of thew. Command was in his firm mouth, knowing wit in his bright eyes, and courage in all his face. Upon his brow sat that crown that is invisible to every eye, but can be seen even by the blind; the crown beyond price that draws brave men to a paladin, and makes weak men brave.
“Often I have seen, like a green serpent called by the notes of a pipe, a column of green slip down the cliff below our city to the quay.”
“At this the young man’s eye flashed, and he demanded: ‘Who is this ogre, and what form has he, and where does he dwell?’”
“His name no man knows, for no man can approach near enough…His harbor is an isle to the west, where a channel with many a twist and bend, dividing and redividing, reaches far inland. It is on the isle, so my lore teaches me, that the Corn Maidens are made to dwell; and there he rides at anchor in the midst of them, turning his eye ever to left and right to watch them in their despair.”
“For I am Noctua, the daughter of Night, and the daughter too of him whom you have come to slay…For though he did not know why, being of the stuff of dreams he was drawn to her; and she, who eyes held starlight, to him…At this the princess took pity on him, for all who have the stuff of dreams about them seem fair in some degree at least to the daughters of the night, and he fairest of all.
“At length Night came, and they saw her striding from islet to islet with her bats about her shoulders and her dire wolves dogging her steps. No more than an easy carronade shot from their anchorage she seemed, yet they all observed that she passed not before Hesperus or even Sirius; but they before her. For a moment only she turned her face toward them, and none could be certain what her look conveyed. But all of them wondered if indeed the ogre had taken her without her will as her daughter had said; and if so, if she had not lost the resentment she might be imagined to have felt.”
“In ancient times, so it is said, a tattered child, the daughter of a fisherman, found on the sand a stoppered flask, and by breaking the seal and drawing forth the cork became queen from ice to ice. Just so it seemed, an elemental being, strong with the strength of the forging of creation, debouched from the tall smokestacks of their ship, tumbling over himself in dark joy and growing with a rush, as the wind comes.”
“Then he strode to the rail and looked down; but with such an expression that no one, not even the most brave, dared to look at him. When he lifted his eyes at last, his face was set and grim and with no word to any man he took himself to his cabin and barred the door.”
“But on the morning of the third day, the young man fleshed from dreams came out of his cabin and began to walk up and down the deck as he was wont to do”
“At this he looked up into the very vault of the firmament. And some thought he prayed, and some that he sought to restrain the anger he felt against them, and some only that he hoped to gain inspiration there. But so long did he stare that they waxed afraid, even as they had when he had peered into the water, and one or two began to creep away. Then he said to them: “Behold! Do you not see the sea birds? From every corner of the sky they stream. Follow them.”
“None of them ever forgot that night”
“Certain of the Corn Maidens wed those princes who, having spent years so long enchanted that they are loath to leave that life (and have in that time learned much of gramary), build palaces on lily pads and are seldom seen by men.”
“And when he beheld their dark sails, smutted by the burning tar that had blinded their enemy, he believed them blackened in mourning for the young man, and he threw himself down, and so perished. For no man lives long when his dreams are dead.”

2024.05.15 10:09 Fancy_Boxx I went through my clothes over the winter...

This is a rant about my stuff.
I took everything to my ex's place, was rushed, and one bin of stuff never fully dried and I opened the bin, today. Now I have to rewash everything inside and see what's salvageable.
I want to properly do the Kon Mari method, but clothes have been such a sore issue and I'm waiting to actually fit into stuff again. I have alot of hangups around clothes I am trying to work through first while trying to consolidate my stuff from 3 locations into mainly 1 location. Also, I am in a program with personal property restrictions that I could only bring a couple of bins at a time, and the Kon Mari method says to make a pile of all of your clothes, pick your favorite things and use that as a guide to figure out what does or doesn't bring joy.
I have gotten rid of mediums and larges because I never liked how I looked in adult six small clothing and up. I was always children's sized, gained a bunch of weight (And not in a good way), then gained more weight, then gained more weigh. I know for a fact that nothing above a size small brings me joy except for 2 items worn as a set which I want to try on again and will likely give away within a year from now.
The only adult clothes above an adult small I am keeping besides maybe the 2 named items are 1 shirt which is otherwise the same as 1 I have for regular wear and can be used for crafting matching items; and I have video game swag I imagined being given away at a need event I used to attend that the host used to give away things from a friend who used to hoard as prizes, or I can sell them now that some of this stuff is limited videogame stuff you can only get if you attended a certain convention, and that's been separate this whole time.
I gained a ton of weight and lost a ton of muscle simultaneously during the pandemic which sucked. Was eating really shittily, and am finally eating 3x a day from a meal provider and I calculate about 2 lbs of weight loss per month between my work commute and work assuming my body gets used to the eating every day and makes that my baseline. Unfortunately it could take me 4 to 16 lbs to go down to my prepandemic dimensions, and I have bin of clothes I can add to mg every day wardrobe and more clothes I can try on.
All in all, I have 6 bins of clothes. 1 is work clothes, 1 is half crafting and half winter clothes I am waiting until October to give away to unhoused people (This city is sweep heavy, so it is better to hold onto the clothes and give them out when it is needed.). I regret not going through go my clothes for like months after putting stuff back in storage because I could have given the winter clothes out. Someone who does food distribution has to see people shivering with blue lips. The current season clothes I am ready to give away fit in a damaged backpack which is OK for someone to use in their tent to keep things together or separated afrer a rain, just not aesthetically pleasing. The every day clothes I have right now fit in 1 bin.
1 bin is regular casual clothes I can wear. Another is winteseasonal. 1 is adult venue suitable, and another is in a similar vein. We're at 2% positivity right now which is almost 100k total cases in my city since the only data being provided right now is the test positivity rate in the hospitals. I am waiting for the test positivity rate to go below 0.1% which is 100 cases per 100k.
Going through my stuff today, I see summer and fall stuff I am currently ready to give away, however I am waiting for the season to approach so I am giving things away when people actually want/are looking for those items. For example, I have several pool floats and I have 1 July themed 1. I don't get to swim, I don't like being around top less men cis or not, and I'm probably never going to get to go to a pool party. I have 1 pool float I am probably going to hold onto, and 2 which still hurt because I am a fighting fetishist and they make for blow up weapons.
I looked through my craft supplies and brought out a bunch of stuff I didn't know if I would never use up because I recently found myself making a bunch of pet toys put of supplies left over from last holiday season. There are alot of unhoused people with baby animals right now, and pet toys are something people can use but cannot budget for if they are poor, so I am making suff and then giving them away. And I am glad to say that I won't be hoarding ribbon and faux suede indefinitely, that much of it is actually going to get used.
Over the next year, I will probably start using up my beads in different crafts and I have a couple of specific projects coming up.
Bad news, I still have 2 full bins worth of papers I need to digitize. I am trying to NOT bother with the ex anymore because I just can't, and I have a giant box of papers in his place from when I made a huge effort to downsize my storage unit. Maybe this weekend, but I don't want to see his face or hear from him.
The good thing about spending time at his place was it allowed me to wear things I would wear for him but wouldn't wear at mine, and it allowed me to get rid of a bunch of things I would have otherwise kept holding onto. It took wearing those items regularly to realize I didn't like them after all. And one item I didn't like wound up fitting me better over time and matches something as did keep, but I might still get rid of it in a year.
I would have liked to bring more items over to wear while there, but I am finding I would much rather stay at my place now that I have an ESA and the food situation has gotten better (I am in an interim housing program which is supposed to provide 3 meals a day and accommodate my dietary restrictions. They switched food providers and now I am generally able to get 3 meals a day, but there is still no laundry services on site which is an issue.). I habe exactly 1 outfit at their place which is specifically to wear at their place because I don't mind wearing it there but would never wear it where I currently live.
Once I go down in size to prepandemic clothes, I'll have more shirts, pants, and under clothes I can wear from the bin of casual wear (Which is really like a half bin worth of clothes), but I would rather get down to the lower end of my prepandemic employed weight as those pants are not as comfortable until they're in the oversized due to sensory issues.
Good news, I went through my electronics box and I found a bunch of stuff which is his. Bad news, I still have project items for him to fix along with holiday lights which went out. Good news is he might teach me how to fix the holiday lights. Bad news, he's a dick about working on electronics and had been promising me since 2015 to work on electronics together only to never actually show me anything and get angry.
Oh, and I still have my sentimental iPad which he broke. He promised me he would replace the screen. Also, a laptop screen. I might be picking up work this year which will allow me to purchase replacement screens and get him to fix it as I seem to keep breaking my devices further when I try to fix them myself. I have a phone which is simpler to fix and breaks alot. It's enough for me to know how to fix that, I guess. Even if I tried to do the iPad and laptop repairs myself, the good thing about not being complete 0 contact right now, is I don't have to spend hundreds on repair plus parts if I fuck up.
There was more, but that's about it. My holiday stuff year round is 2 bins worth of stuff and I only have 1 designated bin. ☹️ Did I say I really like Halloween? I guess I have to wait for this holiday season to do what I can while also holding back on supplies. It ultimately comes out to a bin and a bag worth of potential keeps past this winter, though.
I have a a whole foods bags of pom poms I tried to make last holiday season, and it looks like I will be finishing and giving away pom pom garlands and/or ornaments this year because I ultimately ran out of time last year except for what I finished for a community mural. And 1 bag is technically things I will be selling. So theoretically I have a bin and a bag worth of potential keeps past this winter, so that's less daunting than it sounds.
I think I might be ready to give away my felt Halloween bags, and I am ready to give away a bunch of smaller fall items I didn't think I could let go of last year, but I am waiting for Fall when people actually want that stuff. I'm sad that St. Patrick's Day passed and I had a supplies I wanted to use but didn't because my stuff was somewhere in storage. Same with Easter stuff. Now everything is consolidated.
Also, I found a pickle plush I have been stuck with because the ex bought it for me almost a decade ago and was a huge dick. My main memory from that night was us sitting in some carnival ride feeling like crap because he was belittling me and I was wondering to myself what the point of being there was while he treated me like shit. I could wash it and give it away, or I can wash it and give it to him because he loves food themed stuff. And he can be simultaneously sentimental and cruel when it comes to objects. I don't want to see the pickle at his place, and I don't want to think about him holding onto it in some weird way for years, but I don't want to look at it, and he has a ton of food themed stuffed animals. Idk. But Mr. Pickle has to go.

2024.05.15 10:07 BUckENbooz91 How to know which Graphite pencil is a good start for drawing/sketching?

Apologies, I tried posting in depth detail with photos on a art subreddit before coming here. After reading the rules and taking much time posting apparently there was a magical rule I broke. Sorry just frustrated, I digress!
It started off with coloring over a month ago. Soon after I was drawing and coloring with markers/pencils paint. I got a sketching kit and am eager to learn. It did come with a quick 12 step on how to sketch this wolf however, it didn't go into detail. Just said to use 4B, 6B, then 12B graphite pencils along with some charcoal in the end. Surely with a entire set there's more to use than 3 utensils. How do you know what is a good graphite pencil to start with? I followed one tutorial video but it still left me confused a bit.

2024.05.15 09:58 ImeFerrerLara Can you guys suggest sample YT Shorts channel that doesn't use voiceover?

I created a new youtube channel last month. My channel niche is repurposing ASMR cooking videos. I added sound effects, facts about the food and sometimes showdown between 2 content creators cooking the same food. After a month of uploading, I find it hard to keep up as I do not have the motivation to work hard on this category. I realized this isn't the niche that Im interested. Im switching to a content that doesnt use voiceover and include interesting facts about a specific topic. So far the only channel that I found that specialized on this niche is @HistorybyMae. I want to make content similar to her but I dont want to include my face. Her content is very engaging. The way she compose words makes you want to watch longer to find out the truth/meaning behind every painting.
I want to rely heavily on pictures, background music and captions. Do guys have any idea that does similar to her channel? Asking for sample channels is my way of learning how they did it successfuly on their niche.

2024.05.15 09:12 WearyPossibility9456 I love squire emblem three horses

I love this game alot. It’s almost been 5 years since it came out and it’s still…Just….Like my favorite thing. I think the storytelling is really interesting because of how the “author” never has an agenda about what the player should believe, only the characters do. So the values that are presented just genuinely conflict, and the ”author” never does anything to make sitting in the middle easy, so you’re forced to genuinely consider how you yourself feel about what’s going on. The game could have easily been ”Choose one of three characters to play as and observe the story through” but Byleth changes how the story plays out completely. And yes they’re a “self insert” for the player to relate to but they’re also way more than that. I love how through your first playthrough they really do feel like a self insert, but by your second playthrough, you know more than Byleth does— all of a sudden Byleth’s feelings are BYLETH’S alone, while the player experiences their own feelings. And this is really interesting because of what I said about the author having no “agenda”. Even if your knuckles are white and you absolutely don’t agree with the people you’ve sided with, Byleth will not remain neutral. Ultimately, they are their own character, and they don’t know half as much as the player or the author. So they can never offer a comfortable middle ground for the player to default to. This game is so difficult emotionally to play, because the author will never validate your feelings or your beliefs— and his characters will disagree just as much as they agree with you. The characters are so REAL because of this. And I said that makes it difficult emotionally but that’s part of what I love about it. It’s thought provoking. Genuinely. Obviously it’s not perfect I don’t need anyone telling me why I’m “wrong” because this is just my opinion, and the fact is that in MY opinion the flaws do not withdraw enough to go unappreciated for what is good. I don’t think that was a coherent sentence I haven’t slept right in like 5 days but if you’re still reading this I’ll take my chances and keep talking. I think that it does something with its storytelling that could not be explored in any other medium and it excels at it. The characters are alive. They are real. Because the “moral” of the story isn’t cut and dry, it doesn’t fully agree or disagree with anyone because the “point” is that everyone in the world is trying their BEST. Even the Agarthans, alot of people hate them because they’re “mustache twirling villains” but I love how 3hopes expanded upon them with Arval. Even if those pieces were added after the fact, these games (and every game) are made by humans, and the willingness to improve (exponentially) upon a story in a SPIN-OFF is, I think, evidence of just how much the people who made it care. And that’s what I love about storytelling. I love it when people care. And maybe that’s me praising the bare minimum but I don’t think thats a stupid thing to celebrate. And back to the “moral” of the story, people doing their best, this game is genuinely uncomfortable to play most of the time and I think that’s why people argue so much about it— but I think that the sheer emotion these arguments have is evidence of just how bizarre and POWERFUL the method the story is told in is. It’s unconventional. It’s not typically advised to make your “reader” feel like a horrible fucking person for doing what they believe in, and even if other stories follow a similar “morally-grey” narrative, I don’t think that alot of videogames really utilize the power of forcing the player to PARTICIPATE in those things. Or, when they do, the “author”— some perspective that is above the characters in the story— makes the point that “This is maybe not the best decision, but, in light of the circumstances, there isn’t any other way to get this done.” Three houses completely shits on that by avoiding the middle-man, there is no higher power telling the player how they should perceive what’s going on, so every time you play through a route, you are confronted with the fact that EVERYONE is convinced that their way is the ONLY way— and they’re RIGHT, because none of them, as people, would ever be able to settle for anything else. But there isn’t a narrator telling you that. The game is so uncomfortable because you have to realize that for yourself, even after playing one or more routes that you favor. That’s a valuable fucking lesson and it could not be portrayed to this extent in anything but a video game. And maybe I’m dumb for analyzing a video game based on its ability to tell a “message” but that’s what storytelling is for. Stories grow people. They teach them about themselves. They force people to look at the world in a different way. That’s what they are to me anyway. And three houses has changed me. Literally and I don’t care how fucking embarrassing it is to say that about a fire emblem game. I could write 5 essays on how the characters and themes in this game have made me a better person and I could write 10 more about how it got me through the worst years of my life. Part of me wants to just gush and write all 15 of those but ultimately I feel like I’d just be trying to “prove” myself to myself by trying to convince myself that it’s not stupid to care so much about a video game, but I don’t want to care anymore! I fucking love this game! I appreciate it! It makes me happy! And besides narrative and shit it’s so much FUN even when the map design is shit that hasn’t stopped me from playing it 12 times to come up with the dumbest fucking builds just for fun. Reunion at dawn is an ass chapter but i Just think that’s funny. I no longer fear hell after playing that shit on maddening 3 times jeebaleeba you can tell my brain is dissolving like a chlorine tablet because now all of my filler words are just swears. Fuck. Sorry. Thank you for reading. I doubt anyone will read this. But hopefully someone will. Thanks anyway. The way I see it, people should talk more about what they like just ’because’, I like hearing people do that so hopefully this isn’t just annoying. Ta ta. Tallyho gamer boys and gamer girls and gamers remember to stay hdrated and get sleep shnooooozzeee

2024.05.15 08:59 tatamels Video content showing face vs not when it comes to revenue

I'm just starting my channel and have many questions, a good bulk of which I'm finding answers through reviewing other posts on this channel - thank you!
As I sketch out my YT channel's theme/niche, I'm struggling with the idea of showing my face on videos. Reasons: a) privacy, b) I'm not into following herd models (I don't mean offense here, just sharing objectively). My background is partly in branding so I do understand the power and psychology behind it in terms of building connection and trust with audiences. My questions are more statistical:
Yes, I intend to monetize from RPM & CPM. I understand there are many other factors that determine revenue, and that by not showing face I may be surrendering extra dollars.
I'm grateful for any feedback you can share, thanks.

2024.05.15 08:34 ItalianDishFeline Where should I start learning to draw?

Hello all,
Jazza has been a major source of inspiration for me for years. My mini painting was elevated, I've tried new mediums like resin and sculpting (a bit, certainly not at an advance or even intermediate level), I could go on. The thing is, the only space I'm comfortable in is 3D.
I desperately want to learn how to draw and paint in 2D. It's something that I've wanted to be good at since I was a kid, but frankly, I've never been good at being bad at stuff. Almost 20 years of being afraid to draw later, and I'm ready to leave my ego on the ground and suck for a while.
So then, my question is simply where to start. Or, I suppose, where do I start and what is a path I should plan on? I know that eventually I want to be able to produce semi realistic character work. Are there particular books, videos, and classes that you would recommend? I know that I want to pick up the Jazza character work class eventually, but I think that'll probably wait for a moment while I get down my fundamentals.

2024.05.15 08:02 IroPagisaur Working to become a Paleo Artist ( Journal entry 1, I guess :D )

I'm a digital painter, I used to do commissions and earn a living through art but for the last few years that has stopped feeling right to me. I decided I can afford to take a break and do my own thing for a while and hopefully build a different type of income.
I used to paint random made-up fantasy creatures and then last year I picked dinosaurs then moved on to calling it Paleo Art and now I know I want to make 3d models(in Blender) of dinosaurs that are game ready because it combines things I've always drooled over (beautiful 3d sculpts), things I always wanted to know (paleonthology) and a bunch of random skills I have (like game animation). Hopefully I can end up selling models on platforms such as Sketchfab, that's a wonderful place to look at dinosaur models btw!!
I thought writing this might help someone who's also early on the path to become a paleoartist. I know from my experience working that having a diverse skillset pays off, especially 3D skills, as the position "Creature artist" in every studio I've ever looked at applying for means "3D Creature Artist", for some reason it's too obvious to bother putting it in the name.
If sculpting is intimidating to some, let me say this: If you can draw, you'll either be naturally good at sculpting or, if sculpting comes hard to you then it will teach you a ton about drawing, sculpting lives in the same cluster of brain cells as 2d art does.
When taking commissions for paintings, I sometimes told my clients I was doing animation/3d/video editing on the side and I often got extra work that way, and got to learn new skills while earning a bit of money and getting to see my work used in real projects.
I either just can't ever settle on anything or I never found my place before but I think I have now, I think my current ambition to make paleo-art and focus on 3d models is broad enough and just a good fit. I wouldn't mind doing this for my entire career. If I want to do something fancy like starting a YT channel, I can always do when I earn enough income, I don't want to make videos while worrying how much they'll pay.
If this is interesting at all, I could document my progress here. o-o

2024.05.15 07:56 readingitnowagain Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott defeats former Mayor Sheila Dixon in primary contest, making Mayor Scott the foregone favorite to hold the Mayorship against African American Republican Shannon Wright who's barely pulling 1,000 votes.

https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/05/14/scott-dixon-campaigning-primary-maryland-baltimore/
By Emily Opilo eopilo@baltsun.com PUBLISHED: May 14, 2024 at 3:51 p.m. UPDATED: May 15, 2024 at 12:56 a.m.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott declared victory in his bid for reelection Tuesday after opening what appeared to be an insurmountable lead over his chief opponent, former Mayor Sheila Dixon.
The Associated Press called the race for Scott at 11:24 p.m. Taking the stage minutes later at his South Baltimore election night party, Scott thanked Dixon for running a hard-fought campaign, but said it was time to “turn the page.”
“I think it’s safe to say we’re destined for a second term,” Scott said, prompting loud applause from a celebratory crowd.
Dixon, who left her party before 11 p.m., said before her departure that the race was too close to call.
After Scott declared victory, Dixon spokesman Luca Amayo said that “regardless of how the votes fall, there will always be people in the city who consider Sheila Dixon the forever mayor of Baltimore.”
The race pitted the first-term Scott against Dixon, the city’s mayor of three years, in a rematch of the 2020 contest that put Scott in office. Both are Democrats.
This time, the field was half the size of the crowded 2020 race and the upper tier of candidates shrank. Former prosecutor Thiru Vignarajah dropped out of the race in the first week of May, less than 24 hours ahead of the start of early voting. Businessman Bob Wallace, an independent candidate for mayor in 2020, ran this time as a Democrat, but failed to gain traction.
Returns from the early voting period, mail-in ballots cast ahead of the election, and almost all of the city’s 295 precincts showed Scott with 50.9% of votes cast to Dixon’s 41.3% — a difference of about 6,200 votes. Vignarajah, who exited the race too late to remove his name from the ballot, still received 3% of the preliminary vote. The returns do not include at least 13,500 mail-in ballots that have yet to be counted by the Baltimore Board of Elections.
When early returns first became public, Dixon jumped to an early lead. However, Scott quickly became the frontrunner and continued to widen his margin Tuesday night as additional returns from primary day were posted.
Cheers broke out at Scott’s party at Baltimore Peninsula earlier Tuesday as initial returns hit two television screens showing Scott slightly ahead of Dixon. Diana Turner danced joyfully as video clips of Scott played on the newscasts. Turner admitted she was unnerved to see the numbers so close between Scott and Dixon, but said she learned from Scott’s previous campaign that initial figures don’t tell the whole story.
“It’s going to fluctuate depending on where the polls are,” she said.
Dixon supporters said they expected the race to be close and the early returns gave them hope that she could, unlike last time, end up victorious.
“I think it was too soon last time,” said Kim Bangs, 64, of Canton said of Dixon’s 2020 bid for the office.
The city board of elections tallied about 11,700 mail-in ballots from Democratic voters ahead of primary day. The canvassing of remaining mail-in ballots will not resume until Thursday.
The 2024 mayoral contest, like many before it, focused heavily on crime. Scott touted the city’s reduction in homicides in 2023 — fewer than 300 people were killed for the first time in nearly a decade. Dixon argued Scott focused only on the homicide rate, allowing quality-of-life crimes to go unaddressed and chasing residents from the city.
Scott, 40, and Dixon, 70, represent different generations of City Hall leadership, but at times, their plans converged. Dixon’s crime plan, rolled out in January, called for a focused deterrence model of policing which would attempt to identify violent offenders and offer social supports in an effort to redirect them. Scott implemented a similar program, known as the Group Violence Reduction Strategy. That approach, piloted in the Baltimore Police Department’s Western District and since expanded, aims to intercept those vulnerable to becoming shooters or victims and provide social supports. The mayor credits it in part for the reduction in homicides.
Both Scott and Dixon’s housing plans call for tax increment financing or “TIFs” to be used in various neighborhoods to address vacant properties.
Dixon and Scott opted to cast their ballots in person Tuesday morning, Dixon near her Hunting Ridge home in West Baltimore and Scott in his Northeast Baltimore neighborhood. Dixon said she was “at peace” as she entered her polling place at Thomas Jefferson Elementary. Scott carried 5-month-old son, Charm Scott, nestled in a car seat into his polling place at Engine House 56.
Some heavy-hitters threw their support behind both candidates, wagering political capital on the close race. Democratic State’s Attorney Ivan Bates joined Dixon’s cause, endorsing the former mayor and calling Scott out for what Bates said was a lack of partnership between the prosecutor’s office and Scott’s City Hall. Sheriff Sam Cogen, too, said Scott has failed to be a partner to his office.
U.S. Sens. Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen both backed Scott, as did numerous unions that represent city employees. Some, like the unions representing the city’s firefighters, took shots at Dixon’s treatment of the fire department during her time in office. Unions backed a PAC that supported Scott with voter outreach and online advertising.
Scott led in fundraising and spending, dropping almost $1 million on the contest since the start of the year. Dixon has spent $653,100 since January. A PAC supporting Dixon’s campaign (funded in large part David Smith, a co-owner of The Baltimore Sun and chairman of Sinclair Broadcasting Group) supplemented Dixon’s effort, running ads that tried to paint Scott as an inexperienced leader. Scott’s ads sought to remind residents of Dixon’s criminal past. She was forced to leave office in 2010 after an embezzlement conviction.
The results of the race showed Vignarajah’s exit did little to tighten the contest. Running his fourth campaign for citywide office in the last seven years, Vignarajah threw his support to Dixon after conversations with the camps of both leading contenders. Scott said afterward that Vignarajah asked to be named police chief or CEO of city schools in exchange for his support. Dixon said no deal was made with Vignarajah for a job, although she declined to discuss potential positions in her administration that he may have suggested. Vignarajah said he offered to be “helpful” to the Dixon administration.

Whistle abandons the traditional centralized media model, supporting artists to interact directly with their potential audience, enhancing the influence and reach of their works. Here, artists can quickly upload their digital artworks created using Sage AI and enjoy real-time global exposure. Audiences can browse and purchase artworks, as well as directly communicate with creators, building closer connections.
By utilizing blockchain technology, Whistle ensures that artists’ copyrights are tracked and authenticated, and each resale of the work can bring transparent and fair profit sharing to the artists. This not only increases the artists’ revenue but also gives them more control over the circulation of their works.
SAI Provides a New Economic Model for Artists
In the improvement of the traditional art ecosystem, the innovation of economic models plays a crucial role. Sage AI integrates the SAI token system, providing a new incentive and reward system for artistic creation. Whenever artists create and publish works using Sage AI on the Whistle platform, they receive SAI tokens as a reward. This model not only creates a new channel for artists to earn income through their art but also cleverly measures the relationship between participants’ contributions and the rewards they receive.
Holding SAI tokens, artists not only enjoy continuous revenue but also participate in the governance decisions of the Whistle platform. This new model of direct governance participation expands the influence of artists within the ecosystem, allowing them to voice their opinions on the platform’s development direction and influence decisions related to art display, content distribution, and copyright protection rules. This participation in both economic and governance aspects not only grants artists greater autonomy but also drives the vitality and innovation of the entire community.
SAI tokens accelerate the formation of a symbiotic ecosystem between Sage AI and the Whistle platform, where the value lies not only in economic benefits but also in how the power of crypto-economics can build a freer, fairer, and more creative art community. This ecosystem provides a comprehensive environment for artists, including creation and display platforms, reputation building, community involvement, and economic returns, offering digital artists a new development path in the Web3 era.
**Promoting Art Co-Creation and Knowledge Sharing**
In addition to providing individual artists with a creation platform and economic model, Sage AI builds new bridges for art education and collaboration. Through Sage AI, educational institutions can simplify the teaching process, making it easier for students to understand and apply complex artistic techniques. This technological intervention helps cultivate the creativity and technical skills of the next generation of artists, while also promoting the democratization of art education, allowing more art enthusiasts to access and learn regardless of their background.
On the collaboration front, the Whistle platform, supported by Sage AI, offers a platform for artists to collaborate with each other and with professionals from different fields such as technical experts and marketers. Here, cross-disciplinary teams can brainstorm, create, and promote art projects together. Leveraging the advantages of decentralization, the Whistle platform ensures that project results can be quickly and widely disseminated.
SAI tokens further enhance this collaborative enthusiasm, recognizing and rewarding contributions to art creation and education. This reward mechanism not only motivates existing community members but also attracts new participants to join, share knowledge and ideas, and foster a continually developing and self-enhancing art ecosystem.
With the support of Sage AI and the Whistle platform, art education and collaboration have become more accessible and affordable than ever, empowering individuals to continuously innovate and ensuring the diversity of art and the cultural prosperity of society.

2024.05.15 06:35 DokiDokiChuChu Main Theme from Arcadian (2024)

Main Theme from Arcadian (2024)
I'm trying to locate the main theme from the movie Arcadian (2024) which is primarily a classical piano piece with no vocals (that I know of).
I found a video on YouTube of the song but it's not official, it's simply cut directly from the movie and-so has background noises. I've tried using both Google and Shazam using this audio, but nothing picks up. I've also looked into some of the people who've worked on the film and their music but still came up with nothing.
I'm worried no official soundtrack will ever be properly released, at least on YouTube, and that it may be unreleased permanently. In this case, I at least want to know if there's a name and who created it.
If anything, the piece sounds very familiar to another one from How To Train Your Dragon but I'm unsure of which in particular.
Any help would be appreciated!

2024.05.15 05:59 Necessary_Car_912 [WTS] SpydieChef Bioshock theme w/ harpoon mod

SV: 185.00 SOLD!
Timestamp/Pics Video
Gentlemen,
On offer is a Bioshock themed SpydieChef with a beautiful harpoon grind mod on the blade. Picked up off the swap a few months ago, I am at least the fourth owner. Since I received it I swapped the original acid washed harpoon blade with the one you see shown. The grind lines on the swedge and how they blend into the mirror edge is wonderful and clearly done by someone who knows what they are doing. Likely Way of the Knife.
This knife has been carried a lot, but is in very respectable shape. Dead nuts center. It locks up with no blade play and has some very nicely worn in washers that make the action glass. Best frame lock action Spyderco I have experienced. Mirror edge, blade, milled Ti clip, and frame have signs of wear. (See video)
I am not the biggest fan of the show side scale and I just cant get past it. Otherwise this would stay with me without a doubt. Just a cool knife that I love to admire and flip around. I hope someone gets it who appreciates it, took me a bit to work up to posting it.
Will ship tomorrow USPS Priority Insured to anywhere in the lower 48. Pack photos. Tracking. Proof of release. The whole 9.

Thanks for checking me out and happy hunting!

2024.05.15 05:58 smokdlavender Timeless.com = website to buy a book

Timeless.com = website to buy a book

Timeless.com has updated recently with a new landing page and some more cryptic clues which I think are revealing....

I went through the page elements and what tiny snippets of the code that are available.
  • First off the site is made using Bootstrap which is a CSS framework for web development and it organises and controls a pages layout and the elements within it. I learnt to use Bootstrap when learning to code and it is extremely reliable but often HATED by ppl I'd consider to be code purists lol. But it's ideal for large scale code builds hence why it's probably being used, however a tiny part of me hopes this is a bit of a middle finger to KK considering she "kodes".
  • Site info I couldn't correlate to easter eggs - it has a cart built into the page but bootstrap doesn't support e-commerce, so there is going to be a way to purchase something.
  • There are 3 meta names in the page head, "viewport" "description" "author" - what does this mean? a Viewport is the size / region / space you're viewing the page on e.g. laptop screen is your viewport. What is odd about the 3 meta tags? They give information about content on the page but obviously the user can only see the background video and the welcome message. There is no actual description available yet, and there is certainly no book or author visible on the page. So I presume this clue within the head element to mean, Taylor is describing herself as an author in this view, this also fits sort of into the 3-2-1 theme that's been going on.
  • Hidden Rainbows in CSS - if you scroll through the CSS file for the page, you will see a rainbow pattern as it goes through the different defined elements, buttons, etc. At first the colours are muted and pastel but as you get further along the colours become brighter and more saturated. This could be a coincidence as Bootstrap has set colours for elements and they do correspond, however any coincidence now just feels like synchronicity so I'll leave it in. If you scroll it in reverse the bright rainbow fades to grey
The whole world is black and white.....
Muted pastels for CSS
Bolder colours as you scroll further down the CSS

New start is Coming = Wainscottings

  • Anagram on landing page "New start is Coming" - this unscrambles to Wainscottings, which after a quick google search resulted in "Wainscoting is a popular home improvement project because it is both stylish and has many practical benefits. These benefits include protecting walls from damage, hiding imperfections. Wainscoting can be used in many different ways in your home, such as on walls, or as a backsplash in your kitchen." The first google search is for an article on This Old House in which it describes wainscottings as "Elegant armor for your walls, wainscoting is particularly well suited to rooms that take a lot of wear and tear". This is referring back to Cassandra (Track 27) "I was in my new house placing daydreams Patching up the crack along the wall I pass it and lose track of what I'm saying 'Cause that's where I was when I got the call"
  • Capital N & C - the best I've come up with for this is 14/3 and this could be the date for revealing a new house (or the house she's patched up?). This also happens to be National Write Your Story Day. March 14th recognizes the mathematical constant π. Also known as pi, the first three and most recognized digits are 3.14. And what do you get also get with these numbes? 134 - remember those days?

Building something! Stay tuned.

  • Capital B & S - 2/19 again best connection I could make, the total of all the "numbers" = 38. Still not sure how to connect this but I think that Wainscottings and Building combined must refer to building a new 'house'.
  • Final Eras show in Australia - she was quoted as saying to the crowd "You are the love of my life" and also happened to play her largest shows ever on tour here (96,000 each night, total 288,000) and makes a point of discussing the math / numbers. She also went on to say, “That’s the version you get of me tonight, the version that’s completely starstruck by the fact that so many of you wanted to hang out with us on a Friday night in Melbourne”.
  • Stay tuned - tuned is an interesting wordchoice, "The meaning of STAY TUNED is to keep watching a television show or listening to a radio broadcast —often used figuratively." so I presume this to mean keep listening / watching / waiting, whether for clues or a new project (Karma?).

Praying figure in BW in background video

  • The video length is 12 seconds long - do with that what you will, midnight reference? The video changes imagery at 5 seconds. It begins with a busy intersection and ends with a cityscape.
  • Traffic at an intersection, and a cityscape with a building that has an 'ARTS FESTIVAL' billboard - the billboard is Blue, White & Green (gay mens flag??)
  • Black & White ambiguous figure mural / billboard - hidden in the bottom left corner at the beginning of the video. The figure is on their knees praying in the direction of the middle / right of the screen. As the video pans, it looks as though the kneeling figure billboard is praying to the 'Arts Festival' billboard. Between these two buildings, is an even bigger building obscuring the other from view, so although the billboards can't directly view the other, the BW figure billboard is still pointing and praying in that direction.
  • Landmarks of interest - aside from the two billboards, there is a CNN sign and a Ferris wheel. Try as I might to place where this is, the best I could get was that the Original Ferris Wheel was in St Louis for 2 years between 1904-06 which honestly feels a bit more like confirmation bias / looking for a muse connection. I also tried to find the black and white mural with no luck.
This is an extremely peculiar half man / half person?

And finally for those who wish to watch it

Timeless background video
If you made it this far - what are your thoughts?? This whole TTPD era really does feel like a mutual manic phase with how much my brain keeps linking things up (to the point I am overstimulated and getting a bit sick of it lol). Would love to hear everyone's input on top of this!!!! <3
