TL;DR: I had a great 1st experience at an Antiochian Orthodox Church - Arabic Tradition. The icons, matins, Divine Liturgy and all was simply fantastic!

Hey Everyone,
I thought I'd write up my first experience at an orthodox church. This may be a bit of a longer post fyi, but I think it's important, and hopefully my experience will help other inquirers.
First off my experience was GREAT! All of the research, YT videos, books and of course this subreddit, had given me plenty of information to prepare me. I will be returning this week, an visiting another church in the Russian Tradition.
So I arrived at the church early as I'm a bit of a time fanatic, and realized that Matins was starting so I stayed for Matins and the Divine Liturgy. I walked in, and oh my gosh, the iconography was breathtaking. Nothing you see online, or in books can compare from my perspective. When it's said that the icons are a window to the heavens/divine, that is a real thing. The church I attended had the dome and in the dome was a icon of our Lord, and it was like He was looking at me. I couldn't stop gazing up at Him, and did so many times during the service. I also saw so many depictions of events, and saints all throughout and it was an emotional and surreal experience. It was incredible!
Matins was interesting as I had no clue what was going on, and this particular Sunday had quite a few guest priests and deacons from out of town and so it was very busy around the alter and the iconostasis . I didn't matter. I sat and listened and took it all in.
I was welcomed by a sub deacon (I think), and he was nice and welcomed me. After, I believe, a deacon, came and welcomed me. He asked me my full name, and where I came from (religious background), I'm Baptist (protestant), and he welcomed me and asked me not to take communion, he also said we could speak later. I told him I had done quite a bit of research and understood. He nodded an thanked me and then scurried back up to the alter as Matins was in process. I sat back down and enjoyed Matins, and then we went right into the Divine Liturgy.
Oh my gosh it was such a sight to behold and feel! While I wouldn't say I "felt like I was home per se", the after affects of the service told me what needed to be done in my life. More on that later. So the divine liturgy was simply amazing! The music, the reading, the homily all of it! I was in that church for 2.5 hours and it flew by!
The service was mostly in English, with a mix of Arabic, and most of the parishioners were arabic. I had not idea the church was of the arabic tradition, but that didn't matter to me. I know and have experienced many cultures so it was fine. As the divine liturgy began, the church filled up! It was nice to see familys, couples, kids, grandparents and the like in the church. And for those who are wondering if they stick out like a sore thumb, I am of African American heritage, and so I was the only one there. No biggie for me, and no one cared. No one was looking at me, even when the archpriest welcomed me during the Divine Liturgy (that was a shock to me as I don't like public attention). There were also some celebrations, as one of the subdeacons was moving away to another state, and there was a recently married couple that received their crowns, which was nice to see.
Finally, I was able to see the sacrament of holy communion, which was a sight to behold. And when I say I saw it, it was not more than a half a foot in front of me due to where I was sitting so I was able to "experience it" without actually partaking.
Overall thoughts:
Simply incredible and I know for a fact that I want to be a part of the original church. Now I need to find which orthodox church/tradition best suits me (currently in process). The after effects of the services were like lightening striking my inner being! I was energized and felt incredible at a spiritual level, so much so that I wanted to go back again the same day! I knew then and their that this is where I belonged.
I also didn't read the Matins/Divine Liturgy before going, which was fine for me. In hindsight, I probably should have so I at least knew what was going on, but for me, it didn't matter for my first experience.
I am ecstatic and looking forward to becoming a Catechumen, and then a full member of the original church!

My spouse drives a Sprinter van that they work out of as a mobile craftsperson. This morning, they went across the street to the gas station to fuel up. This is a regular gas station so it has several fuel stations, both of which have two pumps per side. As my spouse arrived, there was a free pump in front of another car that was already parked at the first pump on the same side. My spouse backed their van into the space and began fueling.
This boomer woman, who had already been parked at her respective pump for some time before my spouse arrived, lost her absolute mind at them. She began screaming at them that they were blocking her from being able to pull up far enough to fuel her car and demanded that they move. Again, this woman arrived to the pump BEFORE my spouse and parked her car there without anyone around her limiting where her car could go. My spouse apologized (despite already not being in the wrong) and said they would move as soon as they were done fueling up, since it's unsafe to turn on the engine and operate the vehicle while pumping gas.
Cue boomer meltdown. She began screaming about this was "SO California" (which is where we live) and how our generation (we're millennials) is "SO selfish," and how back in her day, people were so much kinder and more accommodating and her generation is so superior to ours. She went on and on, literally screaming, as my spouse ignored her and did not engage. Once they finished fueling up and left, I could see from our balcony (where I watched all of this going down-- I was too far away to to hear it but my spouse called me right after and filled me in) that she didn't even move her car and start fueling once my spouse was gone. I watched for around 5 minutes and she just sat there in her car and then eventually drove away WITHOUT fueling up her car!
It was such a hostile interaction for no reason, and now my spouse is worried that this insane woman is going to leave them a bad review online, since their business info is on the outside of their van.
WHY are they like this??

Hey folks,
Feels like the might be an odd ball request but I work for an outdoor power equipment company. We sell things like chippers and tillers online. We want to be able to do more product demo videos in house . We usually outsource these at the moment. Or rely on customer generated content. The problem is our offices don’t really have our own patch of land that can be used for these purposes.
We have space in our parking lot to build out a medium sized garden bed placed on concrete to fill with soil. Some thing big enough to be able to load our garden tiller into it and do some quick demonstrations. We wouldn’t really be planting anything into it. We just need to be able to demonstrate the tillers ability to dig into the soil.
Was wondering if:

1. This is even a good idea lol? I know it’s never going to match a true to life demo but I figure will be good enough to communicate a better sense of the product.
   
2. If so, Is there anything we should consider to keep it from not getting gross. Was wondering if we should worry about it getting flooded in the rain or if it would be ok to put a tarp over. Weird bug stuff? Things like that.

I recently sent in an online application to work at crumbl, after not hearing back for around a week I followed up with a phone call. I spoke to the shift leader and she said that they were still hiring, and she wrote down my name. She didnt ask for my number but they should already have that from my application right? Anyways, she said she would give my information over to their gm or district manager or whoever since I already filled out an app, but Idk how long I should expect to wait til I hear back? You get $100/hr to hang out in a room filled with cockroaches, you can stay as long as you want, there's no minimum or maximum time required. The roaches will not crawl up your body past your waist level, but should you decide to sit/lay down, they can still go to the level of which your waist would go if you were still standing. (i.e if you're 6'0 and your waist is at the 3ft mark, they won't go above 3ft, but if your head drops below the 3ft mark, it's fair game til it goes higher.)
Stipulations

1. It's a fully furnished studio apartment with kitchen, bed, bathroom, etc.
2. Should you so choose you can wear pants/boots, and tape them up so they don't get under your clothes.
3. Once you walk in the area, the time starts and continues until you walk of that area.
4. You're not allowed to have any time telling devices in the room with you, nothing in there will have a working clock, nor will there be any entertainment provided that would be able to tell you the time. (I.e you can still read books, magazines, have toys, puzzles, etc).
5. You have no communication with the outside world besides the one person who brings you food. They will not talk to you at all. Your meals are whatever you desire to eat up to 3 meals per 24hr period.
6. There is no pro-rating. If you make it 1hr and 59min, that's only $100.
7. For everyone you end up killing, another takes its place so they won't all end up being able to be killed off.

How long you going for?

I recently started up a contracting/handyman business. A couple of weeks ago I received a text asking me if I did exterior painting. After informing him that I did, I got the address to do a free estimate. The location looked like it was vacant, and definitely in need of paint. Long story short, I submitted a bid, he accepted, and offered to send me a check for 30 percent down, and the rest when the job was completed. I became suspicious when he wanted me to email him the contract to sign. Plus, his number had an unusual area code, and the name he used in the email didn't match anybody listed as owners of the property. I checked on the Oregon Construction Contractors Board (CCB) for any info regarding scams against contractors, but they only had warning for customers regarding scams contractors might attempt. Luckily, an online search for "scam painter contractor" revealed posts from contractors getting scammed. I decided to play along with the guy and his scam was to send me the down payment, along with money to pay the carpenter that would be doing work on the house I was to paint. He told me to pay the painter as soon as the check clears with my bank. I received the check yesterday and notified the sheriffs department. They are sending me a form to fill out which will, at best, provide the government with statistical data regarding these types of crimes. There is zero hope that they will actually catch the guy. I wanted to think up a clever way to mess with the guy. Like to tell him I lost the check and send me another one, but I ended up just telling him to f*** off when he called me at a bad time. Anyway, I hope this post helps prevent someone else from falling for this type of scam. Cheers

I (23f) feel a bit silly making this but this is something that has me crying for nights. For context, I was born in the Philippines and migrated to Australia when I was 10. At 5, my mum use to work for this pillow company called DAKKI and she gave me a throw pillow which was blue and had sea creatures on it. It came from the Everything Animals collections and since that day I treasured that pillow. I called it Fishy and growing up he (I always thought of my pillow as a boy) was there during difficult times. He came with me as I migrated to Australia and has moved houses. I always bought him to road trips and whenever I travel overseas. He’s been ripped at the edges a few times but I would always sew him back despite not knowing how to sew properly. He’s had bite marks because I would bite him whenever I felt anxious and scared, and stains from my tears and saliva as I always hugged him. Whenever I hold him I always feel reassured and safe. He was there when my grandma was still alive and same with my dog. It was the only thing that helped me go through difficult times and often whenever I felt that I was alone I would talk to him. Recently (6 days ago) I went on a trip to Singapore. During the trip I was feeling sick and wasn’t thinking straight. Upon arrival at the airport I was holding him under my arm. My family and I went to a food hall within the airport where we put our stuff down; I don’t know if it was because I was so out of it but I didn’t realise that I was not holding him anymore. It was 4 am when I lost him. I didn’t realised it until 10 pm. By 10 pm I was in my hotel room wondering what was missing. For 18 hours I did not wonder because I was busy with my family.
I got back from my trip 2 days ago. When I went to the airport I went to the information desk and asked. I filled out a missing item report on the night I found out and the next day. They said that no one handed a pillow in. On that night I cried myself to sleep. The night I arrived back to Australia, I cried myself to sleep. Even right now I was sobbing. My siblings and boyfriend have been comforting me and offering solutions such as making a new pillow or finding a replacement for him. But I don’t want it. I just want my boy back. I know it was my fault for not taking care of him but I’ve been praying non stop, asking for a miracle that maybe one day someone will find him or that I find the same model being sold online. I know that some people may find this silly but this pillow is the only thing that was there for me during my hardest times and I am not ready to lose him. I cannot find him online so if anyone can locate him or have an exact one just like him please reach out. Nothing feels right and I just don’t want to be here anymore. I know I have to move on but considering that pillow has been with me for my whole life, I think this is something that will take a long time to heal from.

Hello friends, I hope you're doing well. Today, I need your help regarding a matter I'll explain shortly.
After my 19th birthday, I decided to abandon the habit of wasting my time aimlessly and instead fill it with more meaningful activities. I've been quite successful; a few months after my birthday, I began the unstoppable journey and I quitting smoking, and now, as I talk about it, it's been almost over 5 months.
During these months, I've listened to numerous podcasts, decided to learn web design, read books on self-improvement and discipline, as well as interesting novels. I even decided to learn Spanish, despite living in the Middle East and perhaps having slim chances of visiting that place one day.
But I've done all these things to avoid wasting my time on trivial matters and to be satisfied with myself. And now, as I write this, it's not because I'm tired of doing these things; I just feel like something is missing in my life.
Although maybe I shouldn't feel this way, if Mark Manson were here, he would strongly disagree with me (laughs). When I used to plan my days, my tasks were fixed. Every day, a book, every day, a podcast, coding and taking online courses occasionally. But I was sure that among these days, I would allocate time for myself, because after all, well, I also want to watch a movie, play games, or maybe just stare at the wall for a while.
But when I made this plan for myself, I didn't go to university, and now, the days I go to university, when I come home, I'm completely more tired than I can even relax. And well, with the story I've told you, my life is summarized either in my room or going to university. Even the times when I find some free time during my day, I pick up my phone and scroll through Instagram and Telegram, even when I could use that time to watch a movie or play a game, I waste it.
And yes, I said all this to finally come to the conclusion that what I've lost in my life is a form of recreation that I can't achieve by neglecting my routine tasks. And I don't know what to do. If I stop my daily tasks, I feel trash, and if I indulge in leisure, well, it still feels somewhat like being trash.
I don't have much more to describe my situation. If you have any thoughts and would be so kind as to write them to me, I would greatly appreciate hearing them.

It has been a while...
This month marks two years since I began this gargantuan task of translating Dogra Magra. I couldn't believe that I began this at my first year and now I'm about to end my third year. I'll admit that progress has been very slow. It has been eating at me how slow I've been working. I've at least 250 or so pages to go, and yet, it feels like I'm Sisyphus painfully rolling that stone up the hill, but in my case, I couldn't even get to the peak.
I apologize for the delay. I know I said that I'd give the update on the 23rd of April, but it's now May 15 (where I'm from). I'm sorry.
I picked this date to celebrate the birthday of Mikhail Bulgakov, whose work, The Master and Margarita, is, alongside The Brothers Karamazov, my favorite novel of all time. It was this magic I need after the various novels of realism I had been buying these days. I needed this profound book infused with biting satire and an absurd yet funny plot to bring variety to my readings. A definite reading, I say. I've read it three times the past two months since I bought it...
Third year is almost over, and yet I feel that it had been draining what remained of my enthusiasm for anything. From documentaries to researches to a live TV broadcast, I felt that I've been too tired to do anything these days. And yet, after this comes the mandatory OJT. I can only pray that my will to write continues to stay strong.
I will admit... I had somewhat lost my enthusiasm with translating. It was painful to even look at my text. I was already considering just vanishing altogether and moving on. I began to doubt myself as I always have, but even stronger than before. Thoughts of inadequacy, of mediocrity, of self-hatred just came to me.
But, I had an epiphany. A certain user told me how much he liked my translation, and he felt the hard work I put into doing it. I realized that my work was not in vain. In this one user, I found that I had successfully given Q-san's words light in the English language. I, an amateur, had managed to give Q-san's words the honor it deserves.
And now, looking back at my text, yet to be edited, filled with some errors, and 200 plus pages long, instead of dread and hatred, I felt pride and wonder at myself for the work I had done. And juggling this with college was even more impressive looking back.
So, I came back and tried to churn out a good number of pages in the week before today. I was rusty, I admit, but I made it up with my newfound enthusiasm. I am now confident that I can deliver Q-san's words to the English audience the best way and with quality that will be unlike any cheap translated text found online.
I have been rereading my two books by F. Scott Fitzgerald (The Great Gatsby, Tender is the Night), and I realize that I want my English to shine as much as Fitzgerald when I put this Japanese text to English. I want it to glimmer out the pages, to leave nothing wasted. He is my ideal of what beautiful modern English is (I put "modern" to distinguish from Shakespeare or Chaucer).
So, if it will be alright for you people, just keep watching, because I will continue to present Q-san's works to you, and I will ensure its completion no matter how long! So stay tuned, and keep reading!
The problem now is a date... It is rather difficult to decide due to OJT. For now, I can only give an approximation. Perhaps around the last week of June would be for the best. If not, the first week of July would suffice.

Okay, so I think y'all are gonna need some context first. I (15M, a few months away from turning 16) have a brother (18M), let's call him Greg (obviously NOT his real name). 2 years ago, I accidentally saw Greg's twitter profile and questioned the fact that his pronouns were She/her, which unsurprisingly puzzled me as I had no idea why. After a quick conversation on discord, as to not raise hell from my parents (now 52M and 53F), he confessed to feeling like he wanted to be a woman. Now bear in mind, I respected it and didn't give two craps, I was never too close with my family (nothing extreme though) and couldn't care less. I think it was a few weeks later, 1 or 2 i think, my mother found out. I do believe he told her himself, maybe knowing she wasn't gonna be the first to realize what was going on. And here's where crap hit the fan, you could say, as it started a living hell.
Something people might not know about my parents is, they are VERY stubborn on their ways (a.k.a. their old-as-heck mindset), and my mother didn't exactly like the idea that my brother was trans (oh yeah, he later admitted that same day that he liked both genders, but nobody cared about it as much, Greg included). My mother did ask for my opinion but I said "I dont care what Greg does with his life, it means nothing to me. As long as you stay out of my way, I'm fine with whatever happens. Though, I do kinda get where he's coming from, I wont intervene", and proceeded to leave to my room as it truly meant nothing.
Or so I thought, because a few months later, Greg was bold enough to come to me, clearly stating he wanted me to give him my old phone (an old Alcatel that could barely use WhatsApp and didn't even have a touchscreen, that was my first phone before my actual iPhone 6s I got from backmarket). He intended to sell his iPhone 7 for money to get himself private health care (in my country, public health care IS free but my parents were in control), obviously behind my parents' backs, and he also tried selling me his laptop (which did just recently get passed down to me but for free AND better reasons) with a BROKEN BATTERY for $200. Guys, the damn battery fix costs, and Greg told me that himself, ANOTHER 50 DOLLARS. All I could think was "Is this moron effing joking?", but no he was not and he insisted, but he went back empty-handed and I had a cool threat under my belt in case I needed it. I thought of it like that mainly because of how paranoid I am, and I always like to prepare for the worst case scenario.
Coincidentally, that came like a month later when I was summoned to an exceptionally rare (and awkward ngl) family meeting discussing Greg's feelings and, after a year of me finding out, revealed the truth to my father. As a backup plan, I picked up the Alcatel and stuff it into my pocket just in case (and that, everyone, is why you need to have pockets in your clothes at all times). Sure, I didn't use it, but I was ready to. My father was pretty much mortified at the revelation. And while my father is a great manipulator and always says thing with the intent to trick Greg and me, I did empathize with him a fair bit, honestly.
After this day, we entered what I will call the Horror Year, filled with constant arguing between parents and Greg, and them venting it all out on me. Now before you comment how "you could've done the same", no I could not, my one and only best friend deserves WAY better than getting even slightly involved in this BS. So I ended up holding everything to myself, seeing how my brother cried and my parents yelled at him or even hit him on one occasion (boy was that loud, I heard that with my headphones on but thankfully wasnt a strong swing) and hearing them all vent their crap on ME, my brother telling me how "my parents should un-alive", or "how they suck and wont help me recover my mental health and study what I want" (he wants to get into gamedev in Japan) or even how "they'd rather buy me a car before helping me achieve my dreams" (both cost around the same according to Greg and his internet research bs), and hearing my parents say how "you both can do whatever you want here in your country better than abroad" (most likely false especially in gamedev, by the way) or how "he's just throwing a tantrum" and that "he's just an inexperienced brat who has no idea about life and how hard real life is". They are also the kinda parents that never understood things like us appreciating our videogame save files and considering games something more than a "just for a little bit of time" kinda hobby. That is especially true for me. They even say that nothing in my house is mine, but rather that all of it is THEIRS and THEY are letting us BORROW our computers and stuff, coz THEY paid for it so THEY own it and THEY should be able to use our computers (especially mine apparently) anytime they want it with or without our consent or knowledge. of course they cant as my user has a huge password LOL. But yeah, you get the idea of just how everyone here acts.
To be frank with y'all, I'm starting to lose it. A few days ago, my brother went to an appointment with the doctor to get his treatment and was told there were health risks (very low according to Greg, decently important according to my parents) and to also attend a psychologist (he cried cuz of all that, like LEGIT crying). Actually that all happened yesterday as of writing. Now, I'm losing my patience and told my mother to "not be surprised if one day my mind shuts down and I hurt someone here, coz I just might if you a**holes dont effing stop this BS". I seriously might just blow up, and I think my wooden katana I have for martial arts classes wont like it too much when I do blow up. Not only am I scared that my family dividing might affect me, but I also resent them all for making me suffer in a broken home, all by myself with NOONE to trust. I have the power to try and manipulate the situation a little bit but I dont know how. Cn anyone help me?
P.S.: I told my parents I wanted them to let Greg do it before his appointment with the doctor, mainly coz I want him to learn the hard way if he ends up regretting his choice just the same way I learnt from my own mistakes. Still dont care about his or my parent's feelings though.
TL;DR: My trans brother is causing hell in my family and they all vent on ME, now I'm stuck in a very annoying situation. What do I do now?

Pre-internet, pre-Reddit, etc. it was easy to just play games and gloss over the details of how they were made, who made it, who distributed it, and so on. As a kid, I would naturally call any game on SNES a Nintendo game, and in many cases, assume Nintendo had literally created it, even if it was Donkey Kong Country 2 (developed by Rare but published by Nintendo).
Fast forward to 2024, and most enthusiasts are now well aware of the developer-publisher divide. The developer actually makes the game. The publisher pays for its development and markets it (among other things).
Following the release of Billy Basso's Animal Well, we got a somewhat extreme version of this divide. Basso pulled his own version of a Stardew Valley, somehow coding the game (with its own bespoke engine), doing the art, the music, the puzzles, the story, the secrets, etc. all by himself. This blows my mind and is awesome to see.
Still, I've seen a pretty consistent and reflexive blowback (online, on Reddit, etc.) any time a video, article or post leads with the game's publisher: BIGMODE, the company started by popular youtuber videogamedunkey.
"This ISN'T Dunkey's game. It's Billy's." "Stop giving dunkey credit." etc. etc.
I think it's perfectly fine to correct falsehoods like, "Dunkey made a game." But I feel like we've become so reflexively defensive to the devs that we treat the publisher as a pariah, a necessary-but-dismissable evil we wish didn't have to exist. I see this in games journalism too. Coverage of the devs themselves can be outright fawning, while a reference to a publisher PR rep is often eye-rolling and annoyed.
Certainly, there are examples of marketing campaigns (especially from giant AAA publishers) that have been deceptive and manipulative. Criticism here is warranted, even vital.
But in many other cases, a publisher is a critical piece of the game development puzzle, funding development before the team earns the money back, and generating hype/awareness to take the game from obscurity to (potential) success.
If you look at indie games with bigger teams than Animal Well, but smaller than a AAA outfit, you can argue the publisher role is a natural extension of other game development roles. Yes, some people are actually programming a game. Others are writing character dialogue or creating artwork. Still others are localizing the game in other languages or playtesting the game for QA. You could argue that some of these roles are more important than others (and certainly, salaries for different jobs will help you make that argument), but I'd argue the marketing and financial roles on the publishing team are yet more examples of this ensemble cast, even if they're not strictly _making_ the game.

For 5e Van Richten’s Guide Sandra’s background involves her going to a ball where a plague just suddenly kills everyone. Before all of that it’s just a take on Cinderella, with the plague aspect feeling very disjointed and sudden.
I understand that the plague is representative of The Masque of Red Death by Poe and Saidra embodies that as a darklord. I can make the educated DM call and fill in that the ball Saidra went to was during the height of a plague that the wealthy (and Saidra) ignored to indulge in their luxuries. It still all just feels so disjointed…
Has anyone puzzled out something with the background that flows better or makes more sense? I’m leaning into the “fairytale” aspect of the domain personally because that’s what I think my party and I would like best (instead of another gothic horror with social intrigue like Borca), but this plague mentioned is throwing me for a loop.

Thread is the most recent metroidvania I have played, and it turned out to be way better than expected. It is a metroidvania that plays well, has an extremely smooth performance, and a lot of originality in its ability upgrades. There is no jank whatsoever. The story telling is done almost entirely through finding secrets and the world is indeed filled with tons of secrets containing various rewards. Gameplay revolves around well designed and intuitive puzzles along with platforming challenges and a minor amount of combat. The price reflects its small size, it is a 7 hour long metroidvania. The only negatives I encountered are: 1) Apart from a brief tune that plays every now and then, there is no music. 2) The combat is absurdly easy and you will never die from combat as health potions are everywhere and you can hold an infinite amount of them. 3) while the environmental sound effects are great, the sound effect for the enemies are awful.
I strongly recommend this game for aeterna noctis fans, as the platforming eventually becomes as difficult as in aeterna noctis and I ultimately could not beat the last platforming challenge of the game. It is the third best metroidvania I have played so far this year out of around 25 played in total.
P.S: The May release cycle is not going as planned. A mere few hours after I posted my upcoming metroidvania list, another game got a May release date: Overbowed. A couple of days later, Gestalt was delayed to July and then a couple of days later I got confirmation from both the developer and an internal playtester that Genopanic is NOT a metroidvania and has been falsely labeled as one by both youtubers and steam users. The may 2024 list has been updated accordingly.
