2024.05.14 07:25 beyondthetech Everything so far about the X2 Ring

Everything so far about the X2 Ring
So, the Ring of the X2 AR Glasses is a bit of a double-edged sword:
  • Like a network connection, it’s a requirement for any non-native-X2 app (read: every Android app) to even launch (so don't lose it!),
  • the battery is incredibly small at only 30mAh (so you may have to charge it as often as your glasses!),
  • it has yet another proprietary magnetic connector that's different from the X2's already proprietary magnetic connector,
  • there's no quick or easy way to turn it off,
  • the gyroscopic pointing can get tedious,
  • the touch surface is too sensitive and easily triggers unintended taps - just try typing a full sentence and you'll see it's an exercise,
  • it's $100 USD to replace or get a spare (I confirmed with [RayNeo Service and Support](mailto:service@rayneo.com)).
But, all in all, it offers quick access to your X2’s interface without having to physically touch your glasses.
That being said, a few things that can make your experience better:
  • If you’re having a tough time scrolling horizontally or vertically, try sliding your finger near the sides of the ring, essentially using the edge of the touchpad. That will give you less chance of inadvertently triggering a touch or sliding in the wrong direction.
  • Same with the top of the touchpad to slide horizontally, but you may need to bring your finger down a bit as the top of the touchpad ends before the angle and the LED indicator.
  • If you want to quickly disable your Ring without having to go through the RayNeo OS's menu system, temporarily take off your X2 glasses. That will instantly disconnect the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios and make the glasses go to sleep. Consequently, the disconnected Ring will go to sleep from inactivity.
  • You can keep your finger on the touchpad while trying to point, to prevent inadvertent “clicks,” then lift then tap to actually click.
  • Install an alternative input method, such as FUTO Voice Input. After installing the standalone APK, you'll need to go into Android Settings, System, Languages & input, On-screen keyboard, Android Keyboard (AOSP), Preferences, and turn on the Voice input key feature, so that you'll be access it whenever the on-screen keyboard pops up.
  • I bought a two-pack of these magnetic charging cables from Amazon (search for B0CLXZZJT5), and one of them had the right polarity and connector pinout to charge the Ring properly.
Here's hoping u/RayNeo_Global can add a feature to only register clicks with an actual CLICK of the Ring, not just a TAP.
So, what's this software that RayNeo's running to get vanilla Android, non-native-X2 apps working on your X2 glasses?
It's called App Container
https://preview.redd.it/y1sumxqzvb0d1.png?width=3110&format=png&auto=webp&s=55875143ff82f79372b48f6f409dcaadbac6a74f
From what I can tell, App Container does a few things:
  • Checks for an existing Bluetooth connection with the Ring.
  • Checks for a working Network connection.
  • Launches a standard Android app in a portrait 360x480 mode that is duplicated for both left and right AR glass screens.
  • Overlays a "laser pointer" and cursor for the Ring's gyroscopic control.
  • Overlays a transparent "back and more" button that can be moved around the screen by placing the gyro pointer, then sliding on the Ring's touchpad. Additionally, the "more" button can scan a QR code as well as close the Android application.
  • It prevents any native Android dialogue from appearing for more than a few moments, to which it will force-close the app and return you to the RayNeo OS Home Screen.
So far, I've just touched upon it, but as you can see from the screenshot above, this app serves as the gatekeeper for the rest of the device.
What you'll also notice in the screenshot is that when the App Container launches an Android app, Vysor will show another instance of the same Android app that ran natively. You can slide over and run the app again, and while it will look messed up in the glasses, it will function normally in Vysor's remote session. This is where you can easily access Android dialog boxes and menus that would otherwise kick you out to the Home Screen.
Regarding the App Container:
  • If you go into the App Container's app settings, you can turn off "Display over other apps" and the transparent "back and more" buttons will no longer show. Haven't found a way to hide the laser pointer, though.
  • If you actually click Open in Settings, it shows this interface that's mostly in Chinese. I have yet to throw it through a translator, nor have I clicked any buttons yet to tinker, with the exception of the Settings button, which actually takes you to Android Settings.

Hope some of this info gives you some insight on the software and thought processes that went into making this all work. Let me know what you think.

2024.05.14 07:22 Stunning-Cover-6227 Local 11 election is causing a stir

Local 11 is heading into elections. Our local fb pages have turned into a circus. We have a group that is made up of mostly 20-50yr jw’s. I think 1 person is under 20yrs. They spend a large portion of the time boosting about said years and going on and on about solidarity with no real discussions about what there plans are to make our local better. Many have asked for more info. Plans or things they want to see changed in detail. They get no answer or an answer that doesn’t say much. They claim they don’t want others to “ steal “ there ideas. Honestly who cares who’s idea it is if it works. But anyways. I have spent my time on there fb pages silent just watching. Mostly coz everyone that backs this group gangster up and bashed anyone who doesn’t support them. As member watching this slate comment on a post bashing people and turning around and talking about brotherhood. Has me in disbelief. How is anyone possibly taking them seriously. Our local already has so many issues. A BM that can’t be transparent or honest is not something we need.

2024.05.14 07:20 Jhamin1 Severed at the Root - Unexpected Character options!

I just started reading through my subscription copy of "Severed at the Root", book 2 of the Wardens of Wildwood Adventure Path and was struck at how along with the normal new magic items & important NPC writeups, there is a whole section in the back that describes a *bunch* of new character options for Wardens of Wildwood PCs, and in fact any Primal/Forest/Wooden Element type character.
Other Adventure Paths have given us new Archetypes or spells, but I think this is the first one that has given us whole new Character Class options!
We get:
The Ancestry Feats are all marked as Uncommon, but none of the rest of the new options are (although I think this may be an oversight)
We also get a full writeup on the Green Men religions, allowing your Cleric to worship one of the Elemental Green Men with 4 full and 4 partial examples given. They are all basically demigods that embody an aspect of plant life. One represents the giant trees like Redwoods, one embodies seaweed and sargasso, another oversees erosion that creates new soil, etc.
This is a long way from what a book like Rage of the Elements or Dark Archives does, but as a little 7 page section at the back of an Adventure Path I don't think Paizo has done this before!
There is discussion about how these can be unlocked via all the primal magic being thrown around in this AP, but also mention that anyone with access to the Plane of Wood can be empowered by them. I'd have to digest these a bit more to really decide if I'd want to unlock them during play or allow PCs created for this AP to have access from the beginning.

2024.05.14 07:14 ScholarGrade Juniors - NOW is the time to start brainstorming essays

There have been an increasing number of juniors visiting this sub asking for advice about writing essays. Below are some tips and advice for making your essay stand out as excellent. Feel free to ask questions because I will answer every single question in the comments.
I know from experience that many of you are struggling to identify a good topic for your essay. Conventional wisdom says to start by brainstorming a list of potential topics, and chances are, you have already started a mental list of ideas. You might think you only have a few choices for topics, based on your activities or experiences, or essay examples you read, or the rough draft you already started (or worse, that GPT started...). I advise, however, that you put down your list of topics and back away from it. Forget that exists for a moment. Seriously - thinking about this initial list tethers you to certain ideas that might not actually be your best options.
Now you can begin brainstorming with a clean slate.
Start with thinking about what you want to show in your entire application, not just one essay. Every single component in your app has one purpose – to tell more about YOU. Filling out the rest of the application by rote and focusing solely on the essay is short-sighted and will leave so much potential untapped in your application.

It's About You. Tell Your Story - And Be The Protagonist

An admissions officer’s goal is to understand you fully, in the context of your background and the rest of the applicant pool. They will begin this with assessing your academic abilities and potential. Then they will evaluate how you will fit into the student body they’re trying to curate. All of this can be somewhat broad and diverse and touch on several institutional goals. But they will dig deep to find out what each applicant is like, what your core values and motivations are, what kind of student you will be, how you will contribute to the vibrant and intellectual campus community they’re building, etc.
Your goal with essay brainstorming is to ascertain how to powerfully tell your story in a manner that will fit these criteria. The entirety of your application (again, not just one essay) aims to showcase your abilities, qualifications, and uncommon attributes as a person in a positive way. Before you begin outlining or writing your application, you must determine what is unique about you that will stand out to an admissions panel. All students are truly unique. Not one other student has the same combination of life experiences, personality, passions, or goals as you do. Your job in your application is to frame your unique personal attributes in a positive and compelling way. How will you fit on campus? What personal qualities, strengths, core values, talents, or different perspectives do you bring to the table? What stories, deeper motivations/beliefs, or formative experiences can you use to illustrate all of this?
It is always helpful to start with some soul-searching or self-examination. You might not immediately know what you want to share about yourself. It’s not a simple task to decide how to summarize your whole life and being in a powerful and eloquent way on your application. Introspection prior to starting your application takes additional time and effort rather than jumping straight into your first draft. But it is also a valuable method to start writing a winning application that stands out from the stack.
You'll see the advice everywhere that all essay prompts are really about the same thing - you. The goal of each essay then is to showcase who you are, what matters to you, and how you think. I guarantee if you're on this sub enough, you'll hear the advice to "show, don't tell" when writing about yourself. But what does this mean really, and how do you do it well? How do you even get started on an essay that does this?

Introspection Questions

It’s often easiest to start thinking in terms of superlatives, especially those related to personal insights -- what are the most meaningful things about you, and what do you value the most? Here is a list of questions to help you brainstorm broadly before you narrow down your focus for writing:
I have a free introspection worksheet with over 100 questions like this designed to help you find ideas worth exploring in your essays. You can find it on the A2C Discord or download it directly here.

Find Your Story And Arc

Think of a small anecdote or story from your life that you could share that serves as a microcosm of who you are and what is important to you. It will massively help you narrow this down and find a gem of a story if you first start by thinking about your application arc or theme. This is the one-phrase summary of your entire application. It could be "brilliant entrepreneur who started her own successful business" or "talented athlete who wants to study economics and finance as they pertain to sports", or even "avid baker whose hobby sparked an interest in chemistry". It doesn't have to be related to your intended major, but it can help your arc be stronger and clearer if it is.
Once you have an arc determined and a story to share, think about what you want that story to say about you. This is where it can help to think of this as something you would share on a date - what impression does it make about you to the reader? Once you know this, start showing, not telling this attribute of yourself through your story. For example, instead of saying that you're compassionate toward others, you show an example of a time you were compassionate, then elaborate on why, and what it means to you.

Essay Brainstorming Techniques

If you are having trouble finding a story, or simply have writer’s block once you have picked your topic, here are some ideas to get your juices flowing:

Why Essays Matter

Here's the thing a lot of people don't realize about college admission: it's not an award for being the smartest, most accomplished, or most impressive. It's an invitation to join a community. Far too many students think that if they can just show that they're smart enough, they'll get in. Yale even says right on their admissions website that 75% of their applicants are academically qualified to succeed at Yale. But only ~4% are getting in. That should tell you that they're looking for more than just top tier test scores and grades. To be perfectly clear, you will need top tier grades and (optionally) test scores to show that you're qualified, and the vast majority of my students come to me with this part already in the bank. But what sets the admits apart? It's personal insight - sharing who you are, how you think, what matters to you, and how you engage community. You can't just say "/IAmVerySmart, please admit me," or even "I did a cool thing guys! Isn't that neat!" You need to go deeper and show them your core values, personal strengths, motivations, aspirations, character traits, foundational beliefs, personality, etc. And you need to do it in a charming, winsome way that makes them like you and want to invite you to join their community.
So how do I get students to do this? All of my students complete that introspection worksheet. We go through it and find the stories, examples, anecdotes, conversations, memories, relationships, and other things from their life that will help us craft a strong and personally insightful narrative. We also make lists of the values, strengths, and key personal qualities we want to showcase. Once we have some topics, outlines, abstracts, or rough drafts, we talk about which stories to tell where, how to tell them well, and what details to include to present the best they have to offer. Then we refine, edit, polish, and enhance over and over until the story sings, but more importantly shows their heart and soul. We also go through all the other application components to ensure consistency, quality, and distinctiveness.
Here's why this works so well: at most highly selective colleges there is a primary reader (or 2-3) who will review everything first and then present it to the admissions committee, who then votes on whether to admit you. That presentation typically goes one of three ways:
  1. Total enthusiasm, energy, and excitement. They strongly advocate for admission and paint a clear picture of how you will contribute to their goals and community. Everyone in the room picks up on that energy and is leaning forward in their chairs, looking for reasons to admit you. This is quite rare, generally less than 5 out of every 100 applications, even among those which are "fully qualified." When you do this right, you show depth, meaning, and valuable personal insights so the reviewer is learning about who you are and how you might engage the community they're curating. You come alive off the page as a person, not just another file.
  2. Business as usual. You're another great applicant in a pile of great applicants. They share a basic review of the facts, your profile, stats, strengths, weaknesses, etc. Maybe someone on the committee finds something they love, and they really push for admission. More likely, not and you get deferred/waitlisted even though there wasn't anything "wrong" with your application. They just didn't love you enough to commit.
  3. "Here's a stack of 20 applications that I didn't find all that compelling, so we won't present them individually, but you guys are the committee and you make the decisions. So let me know if there are any you want to talk about." In this case, unless there's a letter of endorsement from an athletics coach or your last name matches several buildings on campus, you're probably not getting additional consideration, much less admission. They will regret to inform you.
Everything we're doing is designed to help them get to know themselves, present the best they have to offer, and land in that first group. Having top tier essays is the single best way to get there. Get started on brainstorming in the next few weeks so you'll have time to get a few essays completed over the summer.

2024.05.14 07:13 Routine_Chair8841 Content planning

What do you guys think…
A. She plans the content, like “he wins Mother’s Day” trip and tells him what the plan is and he is naive and doesn’t see red flags
B. He plans a lot of content without her, like the Mother’s Day one and the nail salon one, because he knows she will post on the internet and it will make him look like a saint and good content rather than for selfless reasons
C. They sit down together and argue about content ideas and how they’ll make their next viral video or what sponsors they are trying to capture (like sunscreen). They are two narcissists as bad as each other exploiting their children.
D. They are just two lovely parents documenting their lives and having fun and regardless of monetary gain or views.
Please summarise their content making process as you imagine it. I think C but she wears the pants and he is too scared to give pushback because she pays the bills. He is still terrible but more a puppet not deciding what content they are posting
Also - I’d love to hear from his ex - is she here on the snark page? :P

2024.05.14 07:12 rdk67 Spring Day 55: Recording the Concrete

I am sitting in one of the disused but quite beautiful parts of the neighborhood, waiting for it to rain.
The rain has already come and gone, a light rain that left traces of dampness on the pavement – the shade of the spring day darkens, becomes real, which is a comfort because that realness, that feeling of extra substance, comes from the water cycle working the way it's supposed to.
I feel it around my nostrils, on the cheeks of my face near the eyes, like I'm a frog looking up from its pond water, which is a pleasant feeling to sashay around town with. This is the spring we all know, the moisture appearing on my skin after driving miles above the earth ten minutes earlier –
an epic plunge is what we are walking through, but it's already rising again, and let's face it – we live in a cook pot set on media, I mean medium – medium is the setting on the cook pot, which notice is more than a crock. From the frog’s point of view, it is ideal.
From our point of view, standing in the chop of the water cycle, we are soaring in the air – then minutes from now, we might be walking in the clouds, and who knows after that, but this is the context for comings and goings this mid-afternoon – this potential for levitation.
I find a broad and elegant tree stump to sit on and record the concrete. Someday we'll all have concrete recorders but today, we just have me.
The stumps are not indigenous to the property, at least I don't think so, but I'm not exactly sure why I don't think that, given that the facility that occupies the block was once probably a forest with abundant marshy places. The forest went, then some infrastructural evolution played out that upcycled into a world-class performing arts center.
Given that my art, before it is anything, is performative – watch the monkey paint words with a stick – I'm hand-in-glove with the performance of the plaza.
I am sitting in a grove of tree stumps, which automatically brings to mind entropy – we all will die someday, become handsome all-weather furniture that slowly disintegrates – but then the overwhelming pleasantness of the day causes the thought to move on, and the stumps become a moment in time that is also a cross-section of full biography, which is quite a thing to be sitting on, waiting for the rain.
The forecast, which I predict would be one of the more impressive modern achievements to the humans who lived through the ice age – just an opinion. The forecast –
I picture their faces in stunned wonder as weather prediction after weather prediction comes true. The forecast
says there is a one-hundred percent chance of rain later this afternoon, time precise to the quarter hour, but with Doppler weather radar, one can make one's own data-driven prediction about when the rain will start to the nearest few minutes.
Someday we'll wear watches that are nothing but countdown clocks ’til the next time the forecast calls for rain – when the clock reaches the nearest minute, it switches to seconds.
This broad, elegant stump I'm sitting on sets on a bed of gravel which, when it rains, can convince me it is river gravel – pick up a few of the rounded stones, give them a close look for evidence of the past. I briefly imagine
finding the remains of a sauropod, each piece of gravel containing a tiny piece of a single sauropod, which together add up to the most complete sauropod skeleton yet discovered.
The stump is all take and no give, and yet I think I prefer it to popping open a lawn chair – the imperviousness of the stump being conducive to recording the concrete.
My backside is about eighty-years wide, which is older than my age, which inspires thoughts about backing into predestination, at least where just sitting around on a fine spring day is concerned. Like a bump on a log in a way, and let's face it – the concrete doesn't get much more concrete than that. A splashing sound
comes from the page. I scan the paper like it’s the sky, and I'm waiting for an aerial firework to open, then I find the spot of rain splashed across the phrase think so – think so, is the phrase – which is followed by a second raindrop, this one hitting the word water, causing the ink to run a little.
A one-hundred percent chance – does that even make sense? I picture a barrel of rain, rolling across the plains. Perhaps we should feel lucky for being visited by such a probability – possibly years before it rolls around again.
Rain will undoubtedly fall at this time, we say to our ice-age guests, and they will hold up the one hand like it's rain, hold up the other like it's time, weigh the two sides side-by-side maybe, maybe invent that gesture where the dancer holds both palms above their heads, lifts them up and down like they're raising the roof.
Still, I'm not sure they'll really understand all those computer models, wrapping themselves around big-data projects involving sensors and rain gauges deployed across the land, starting centuries ago. Science raised the roof, we might say, at least as far as weather prediction is concerned.
I sense the rain not exactly letting up, retreat to the interior of the performing arts center after taking a few notes.
Along part of the gravel is a long puddle of water from the overnight rain, and I would need but a few fish bones or raccoon tracks to believe the whole thing was situated beside a river, the sort of gravel bed surging with snow melt earlier in the season.
This being the Midwest, higher elevations are usually metaphorical, metaphorical before they are anything else, and I think about the campus surging with graduates this past weekend, the landscape of human potential, in all directions, inundated by them.
Inside now, I see a balloon bouquet along one wall of the concourse, with gold Mylar affirmation – The Best Is Yet to Come! – floating on the end of a ribbon.
A one-hundred percent chance of rain – imagine telling all those graduates, you have a one-hundred percent chance of finding love within a fortnight. Call it a graduation gift, then imagine all those rain gauges quivering in their brackets at the thought of measurements certain to be made, collated, used to improve the algorithms that animate the global gods of rain.
At the far end of the concourse, a lady is teaching a gentleman how to dance – they aren’t touching, aren’t even facing each other – side-by-side – and I hear her call out the moves, move-by-move.
Maybe he’s an actor and she’s going over a certain bit of choreography for an upcoming production. Maybe he’s a restless spirit, and she’s teaching him the art of haunting.
That ghost forest in the gravel outside is adjacent to one of the busiest intersections on campus, and yet, turn your back to it, and it becomes just another element in the stopping and starting of the cosmos.
I could see to either end of the block from that broad, elegant tree stump I was sitting on without really being seen from the street which, along with a lush stand of grass in a nearby raised garden bed, brings to mind the wide-open prairie from centuries past.
I picture deer bounding over golden rod. I picture foxes negotiating cone flowers.
The interior of the performing arts center is designed around the premise of potential – four theaters in league with the cardinal directions, plus a blindingly white amphitheater and a low stage in the concourse itself, where they hand out complimentary spliffs and pass around community bongs during free upbeat life-affirming musical programs, attended by folks after the workday is over, plus a helping of retirees.
Okay, not grass but alcohol, but you get the point – people enjoy shindigs now and then. The lady and gentleman are out of sight, but she’s still giving direction – I can hear their back and forth somewhere around the curve in the wall,
which might stand for the passing of time. I imagine myself performing the pasodoble – no, I take it back. I imagine myself performing the pasodoble – no, I take it back! For real this time! I imagine myself destroying the pasodoble – no, god, my boot heels! The planks on the floor! I take it back!
The sun returns, so I pick up my things, head back out to that secluded space, spend a few minutes admiring the resoundingly designed program of the building.
Preformed white concrete panels are suspended twelve feet off the ground to establish the roof of the entrance. Ninety-degree angles abundantly in evidence. Brick pixelates the angled outer walls with the stuff of the earth. Ultra-high resolution, they call it around the masonic lodge.
Someone in the amphitheater is having their photo taken by a professional – everyone loves to do photo shoots there. She is wearing dark knee socks, a navy jumper and a blue bowl haircut, or maybe it’s a wig – I can’t tell from here. I picture anime or promotional material for this fine spring day.
A squirrel bounds through the grass – then poses in front of me, paws together, as though summoning oration.
A robin alights on the stone cladding of the raised beds, begins to stand exclusively on its left leg. The leg is angled under the center of mass – it’s a practiced move.
No one knows why the American robin does this – maybe it’s like bird meditation, though the memory of the American robin is so specifically extraordinary when it comes to navigation and geospecific locations that effectively, at the sensual level on up, it is living in a reality separate from our own, so who knows what meditation might mean.
They can see the magnetic fields of the earth in their eyes using a protein called cryptochrome, which reacts to magnetism. Cryptochrome – like something from the Marvel universe.
Maybe when the American robin stands on its left leg, it’s spacing out to the daytime reality of solar storms, the whole environment all aflutter with a phenomenology of waves passing around the material world.
The robin and the squirrel go their separate ways, and I feel the temperature drop – ah, me! the pasodoble! – as the next part of the front crosses campus.
A peel of thunder indicates the breaking of the sound barrier by means of electromagnetism and the displacement of gasses. Electromagnetic properties experience disequilibrium as a kind of earthquake in the sky that causes the air to vibrate in an awe-inspiring way – the sound magnetic fields make when they rearrange themselves in a gaseous atmosphere.
We are fluid dwellers, through and through, we humans and mammals and reptiles and amphibians and lichen gnawing on patches of the plaza’s concrete. Maybe from the standpoint of the atmosphere, land is just one big coral reef.
When that perfect destiny began to drop rain, the sound at first was curious, expectant – an all-squinty-eyed-and-kissy-faced sort of rain began to fall that grew into a snowy hum that seemed to have a simple song playing inside it, like someone playing a ukulele in the room next door, singing along.
The gig carries on for twenty minutes or so – an opening act – before the rain begins to march double time through the streets – barely soldiers even when they were soldiers.
Less tactic and more matador, this rain storm, and its boot heel crashes down on the planking of the still-lovely spring day. These magnetic storms are not
for war making, nor fighting bulls, nor even for entertaining that cosmic bird called the American robin. What are they for then?
American robins also configure their flight by the stars, by remembering features on the land, by creating mental maps of it all.
And they swim with both grace and endurance, as they navigate this liquid world, this concrete way of life.
In the moment, they are roosting in a tree, observing the silver magnetic waves marching through the streets. Made of what? The pasodoble! Concrete.

2024.05.14 07:10 Low_Telephone_9150 AITA for yelling at my boyfriend

My boyfriend (27) and I (20) are in a decently long term relationship, about 1.5 years. We live together and have a very trusting relationship. We have one another's passwords and never feel the need to go through/on each other’s phones, and if we do it's because we're searching something up or scrolling through social media. Tonight, I was just randomly on his phone scrolling through instagram and decided to scroll through random settings and see random comments he's left on posts and pictures he's l etc. I see where it says recent links and I click o. that and he has clicked an only fans link on may 1st and may 4th. Same girl/account in both. In our relationship we agreed to only have eyes for one another which means no porn, no only fans, no talking to people who are interested in us etc. In all of our time together I never felt the need to not trust him but that was very unsettling for me to see considering May 4th is my birthday. I brought this up with him and he denied it and said that it was probably a spam account he blocked but that doesn't make sense. How would it appear on two different days if you're claiming to block it. And then I tried to look more at his phone and he took it from me and wouldn't let me look. I think walked out of anger. He then shows me his blocked list and it's all only fans models/bots and I feel kinda weird about. Maybe he did block them for that reason but what if he may be using the blocked feature to look at them daily and I wouldn't know about it? I started yelling at him because I didn’t believe him. I don't know if I'm overthinking this because I kind of feel like an asshole now but it’s just weird that it would be the same exact account on two different days. And I’m assuming it would probably delete the account and wouldn’t show up there if it was blocked , like he said.

2024.05.14 07:07 Wheeler_Marketing How to Grab Your Audience's Attention in Just One Sentence on Instagram

Ever feel like your brilliant content is just not getting the eyeballs it deserves? You might be missing a crucial piece: the hook. A compelling hook is your secret weapon for capturing attention instantly. Here's how you can craft hooks that not only grab attention but also hold it, based on timeless principles from experienced marketers.
  1. Start with a Bang! Begin your piece with a statement that sparks curiosity or provokes thought. For instance, "What if I told you that the most successful marketing campaigns shared one hidden secret?" This kind of opening makes the reader pause and think, "I need to know more!"
  2. Use Numbers or Surprising Facts Numbers help quantify your message and offer a tangible grasp of your topic. A hook like "95% of marketers agree—this strategy triples your engagement" is both informative and intriguing.
  3. Ask a Compelling Question Questions provoke thought and invite interaction. A question like "Do you know the most underutilized tactic in digital marketing today?" can lead readers to engage with your content to find the answer.
  4. Paint a Picture with Vivid Descriptions Visual hooks can be incredibly powerful. Describe a scene or outcome vividly to draw readers into your narrative. For example, "Imagine achieving your yearly sales target in just one quarter."
  5. Leverage Storytelling Start with a brief but engaging story to illustrate your main point. Stories create a personal connection and make your content relatable. "Last year, a small startup turned their last $500 into a $5 million revenue stream. Here's how they did it."
Why is mastering the art of the hook critical?
In our fast-paced world, the first few seconds of your content decide whether someone will scroll past or stop and engage. By crafting an irresistible hook, you not only increase the chances of your content being read but also enhance its impact.
We’d love to hear your thoughts or see examples of your favorite hooks! Let’s discuss what you think works and what doesn’t.

2024.05.14 07:06 Alternative-Bite-330 Brittani Louise Taylor

Brittani Louise Taylor
I came across this post from 5 years ago, and it made me a little sad. I would be an idiot to say that someone who is unaware of the early days of Shane Dawson’s career isn’t a “true fan” or any nonsense like that, but it made me sad because, to me, the days when Shane, Brittani, and Joe made videos together were the golden years of YouTube.
Who is Brittani Louise Taylor? She is a creator from early YouTube who is widely overlooked and forgotten by people despite having heavily contributed to the YouTube community in its early days, back when being popular on YouTube was something people made fun of you for (I know it’s wild to think that now, with everyone and their mother wanting YouTube stardom). Back during the early days of YouTube, many of the popular creators were small-time film and television hopefuls who had been shafted by the industry for being “unmarketable” to the masses. Brittani Louise Taylor was one of those artists. She met Shane Dawson (who was trying to break into the business unsuccessfully himself), and along with Joe Nation, they made some of the most creative and bizarre content the platform had seen at that time (late 2008/early 2009).
I know Shane gets a lot of hate for his sense of humor from those days, but I will be the first to say that I was laughing at it. It was funny. It was biting. It was not serious.
I myself was a content creator back in 2008/2009, and I can tell you one thing about those early YouTube stars that you will never see today: they supported and lifted up other creative hopefuls — even if they had ZERO subscribers. I say this because that is exactly what Brittani Louise Taylor did for me, and I want that to be something that I don’t just keep to myself forever. In the wake of those early days being so judged by people, I’d also like for someone who did something very kind and selfless to be noticed as well.
I was just a kid and had the idea to make a YouTube channel called “TheInterviewKid” — self-explanatory: a kid who interviews people, haha. At this time, Brittani was already famous online. Although “famous online” back in 2009 didn’t mean famous as it does today. Online fame was still othered by the mainstream media back in 2009. It was labeled as “fake fame” or “not really famous.” Very stupid, I know, but it’s how things were.
During this time when I wanted to start “TheInterviewKid,” I was a typical idealist teenager who thought, “Hey! Let me just message some famous people and see who will let me interview them!” — something that will, 999,999 times out of 1,000,000, get you nowhere.
You know who answered me? Brittani Louise Taylor. At the height of her YouTube stardom, to an account that had ZERO subscribers, Ms. Taylor responded: “Of course!! What a great idea for a channel!! Let me know any questions you have and I will record a video responding to them for you :)”
And she did. Brittani Louise Taylor took the time out of her day to sit down and record a video answering my questions. The video — ultimately uploaded to my other channel, Hauntings19 — exploded in popularity, setting the foundation for my own online content later going viral in its own right. This gave me the chance to appear on television and network with post-production professionals. Now, at 28, I own my own post-production company in Manhattan.
“What a great idea for a channel!!”
So let me answer this question from five years ago, if I may.
Brittani Louise Taylor is an artist who every other artist online today should strive to be more like. She is kind, empathetic, supportive, and lacks ego.
I ordered her book A Sucky Love Story a few years back, and I’m not just saying this: it was an absolute page-turner. I couldn’t put it down. It smashed my heart into a million pieces to read what had happened to her. Because I know why it did. Ms. Taylor has had happen to her what a lot of the few truly empathetic people of this world have happen to them: they are hurt, chewed up, and spit out by narcissists.
So if I could say one thing to any YouTuber ever, it would be to Brittani Louise Taylor. I would tell her thank you. Because she gave me a chance to live a life I had only dreamed I would be able to one day, and chances are she doesn’t even know she did that for someone.
Thank you, Brittani Louise Taylor.

2024.05.14 07:05 R_we_done_yet If I were a book

I wrote the following as a sort of journal entry and thought this might be a good place to share it. I know it’s a bit over the top, but this is the only way these words come out of me. Not trying to be pretentious lol. Hope someone out there can relate or enjoy. Felt good to write it.
How can I align my thoughts at once? Or weave them into a single thread? Things don’t move that way in my head, really, and it can be hard, then, to truly capture them. What would I look like if I were a book, I wonder? Pages ripped, and torn, and taped back in. Some pages black and smudged and burned to soot. Some crinkled and crunchy, stuck in an awkward permanence to their neighbor, having had tea or coffee spilled on them - once soggy moments, now rigid in time. Some pages would overflow with words like a waterfall, cascading down into rivers and streams of thought, eternally winding back to the vast open sea of paper before them. Some would be marred by the oily fingerprints of a late-night bad decision - a snack I didn’t need, or a love I didn’t crave. Some would be beautiful and intimate. Some so subtle that a reader might unknowingly skip past them when rifling through; soft, tender, and pure. Some pages would find you with faded Polaroids of a kind stranger’s smile wedged into the binding. Snips of hair, cut and glued in the shape of a promise to a long-forgotten friend. The sweat-soaked setlist to every face-melting, heart-wrenching, and whispered empty bedroom concert I’ve ever held, complete with scribbled titles scratched through in harsh black ink, and a few more added hastily to the end of the already cramped page. Speeches I’ve given to the gods, tacked down with old chewing gum and dried saline. My book would creak and crunch beneath its own weight. Inside, you’d find slots for age-old mixtapes, once used to barter and commiserate with similarly hollowed childhood friends. Each to be removed and played in their own time, a patch-work soundtrack to my life. You’d find dust and dirt and a spider or two, with flecks and specks of god knows what. And some pages would make you fear me. Some would bring you joy. Some would make you ache, or yearn, or gasp, or cry. And many would leave you with more questions, and fewer answers.
Some pages would be dark even for me to read.
Pages that suck and pull at your core. Pages that eat your soul. Pages that aren’t pages at all, always changing in location, always hoping to blend and sneak past the conscious reader’s gaze. And on the very next page, as if nothing had changed, you’d find snippets of life I’ve kept precious. A stack of “get well soon” cards from my first-grade class, carefully threaded into the binding. Art drawn and painted and weaved into the fabric of the pages themselves, labors of love. Secrets and prayers alike, whispered and kissed and sent and tucked with care - all etched like scars into the pale canvas beneath them, invaluable and unquantifiable.
And when you’d finish the book, dear reader, what would you feel, then, seeing me displayed like that? Would you love or hate me more? Would the sum total of my existence be greater or lesser in your eyes? If you weighed and judged me in the balance, what would you discover? Would my life hold any value? Which fragments of this collection would hold any worth at all? If one were to be subtracted or added, would your perception shift? If I strung together the perfect sentence, would you love me then? Is that where my worth would lie?
And what of my own perspective? To see myself laid out in full, aching, and oozing, and radiant all at once—could it be enough? Would it offer anything new? Could I see it - really see it - and call it complete? Would my book, in the end, have meant anything at all?

2024.05.14 07:02 Independent-Top4473 Ribbon gear too loose

Ribbon gear too loose
So recently, we went to a used office furniture store to pick me up some office furniture and while we were there, we stumbled upon a Deluxe 100 typewriter on sale for $10. We decided to get it since why not? And it didn’t seem to be in too bad of shape aside from a missing key cap and a much needed paint job. Since we got it home, I had a poke under the hood and everything seemed to be in order so we bought a new ribbon and I installed. While doing so, however, I noticed that the ribbon only wound in one direction. At the time, I figured that I could solve it temporarily by manually winding the ribbon to one side. However, having used it properly for a day, I realized that was not going to be a long term solution since having to spend a few minutes rewinding it after getting less than a page’s worth done was not going to be practical. So I went ahead and opened it back up to find the problem. Currently, the left side winds no problem so I can make it go right to left, but the right side wind doesn’t wind at all. My current theory is that the ratchet on the right is too loose to allow the pawl to properly disengage when it retracts (as seen in the video), however, I did notice a torsion spring on the left that wasn’t mirrored on the right (also visible in the video) and I’m not sure if that has anything to do with the current predicament. Otherwise, I didn’t notice anything missing or any difference between the two sides. If I am correct and the issue is the loose ratchet, how would I go about tightening it. Otherwise if I’m wrong, what might the issue be?

2024.05.14 06:58 dirtyvi how do i talk to him again?

I (14f) and my crush (14m) have been friends since grade 7, i had a crush on him since i ever saw eyes on him. I hit him up with a text and that spiralled into us becoming close friends.
He became like my go-to person for advice and ect.. He asked if had a crush and who, i told him i had a crush on this other dude i had a crush on prior to him.
My favourite memory was the day i skipped HPE cause at this point i was getting bullied by a bunch of 'friends', he found me just sitting down and scrolling on my phone and stood in front of me, we basically just talked and he made fun of him and vice-versa. I got up and he followed me where we just stared at each-other, no words - just stared at each-other.
Later that year we shared air-pods, he didn't care if i cleaned it or not ( i did dont worry) and he put on a song he really liked, i couldn't hear it but i think it was a love song. I let him listen to the song.
This girl that i'll call Mia, anyways she also had a crush on him and i made the mistake of telling Mia i had a crush on him. She didn't tell anyone but she did act more touchy with him. Put mascara on him, and tried to braid his hair.
I kept talking with him, face-timed and played video games all the time.
Anyways i woke up to find people messaging me telling me that everybody knew i liked him, and he swore he didn't like me, i didn't go that day but our interactions were the same. I messed up and we didn't talk for a long time until i apologised.
We still talked, but no irl interactions. My fucking dumbass friend edited a pic of me 'talking shit' about him and sent it to him, and we just stopped talking, he brought up me having a crush on him and we stopped talking
That was in grade 7, im in grade 9 now.
The last interaction was him telling me that a guy in my class had a crush on me, which didn't seem likely because the guy instantly swore on god that he didn't
how do i talk to him without sounding/seeming like a weirdo.
(Also the girl who likes him - 'Mia', is a jealous bitch, she follows him everywhere, talks to him all the time and she slapped a girl really hard for COMPLIMENTING HIS HAIR as a joke, he got a buzzcut and she was making fun of him. Shes popular so nobody cares - plus shes pretty?)

2024.05.14 06:48 jaskij Android: increase font size for a specific website?

In Firefox on Android, how can I increase font size for one specific website? The same way I would with Ctrl + mous wheel on desktop?
Note: I do not want to zoom in, as it is a large amount of text and I don't want to scroll horizontally. Reader mode is unavailable for this specific website (new Reddit).

2024.05.14 06:46 rvcjew2 I know broadcom won't see this but I just need to vent how bad this is made. I can't get a site ID as it wants a site ID to make a profile in the first place.

First off who thought it was a good idea to make the retrieve site ID page once you fill it out hoping for some help show a tiny box in the bottom left that will show your case ID for 3 seconds then dissappear? Till I happened to notice the box that hides behind the cookie icon I probably have made 40 cases thinking that tool wasn't working.
I see that maybe the case ID was on some export I could have done when the old portal was up? I never received an email about migration or data backup at all, and only learned about any of the migration today.
I had to manually make a broadcom account today. It looks like if I was able to make a profile then I could just add my license keys to my profile then download the software (workstation pro 17-perpetial)?
I can only imagine how bad this is for the corporate customers at the moment. Seems all their chat is down as well.

2024.05.14 06:44 Gansuui Yunli lore and leaks we know so far (and some speculation)

UBatcha's info about Yunli
So according to this drop by UBatcha, Yunli is the Granddaughter of General Huaiyan of the Xianzhou Zhuming and she is of similar age to Yanqing, a character we know and hate love. Their love for swords and being of similar age is an interesting connection to make.
Lin Zhaoyu's Wiki Page, focus on the Known Relatives section.
In Lin Zhaoyu's Wiki Page, we can see that someone named Ma Feima is her husband. Also Fu Hua hehe we might get Marshal Hua soon too.
Ma Feima is also called Ma Yanqing
On the Wiki Page for Fu Hua's seven disciples, Ma Feima is there and he's also known as Ma Yanqing. Coincidence? I think not!
This is how Ma Yanqing looks like.
Conclusion: So therefore I conclude that it is highly probable that Yunli will be a Lin Zhaoyu expy (which is why this subreddit is full of Lin Zhaoyu art)
If you have objections or thoughts that may disprove this post, please let me know! I haven't really played through this part of HI3 yet so I don't know the full context. Thanks for reading if you did!

2024.05.14 06:43 TroubleS0meE 2 Best friends and a crush...its a small world

In 2020, I(M, 28) was a relationship. Later in the year, I remember this girl...lets call her Jean(24) came to my apartment she was doing some work related to the US census. She wanted to know how many were in my apartment etc. I was attracted to her but I didn't make a move, I was in relationship. However, we both lived in the same building.
In, 2021 me and my GF broke up. I had Jean on my mind, but she wasn't around, she was at school. About late 2022, she cameback home, I started seeing her more. Eventually I got her IG and a months later I got her number.
We text for a bit and got each other's birthday. During this time, I was seeing her IG post and stories...and I had my reservations about her but at the same time I was attracted to her. I didn't take the next step to take her out because of the things I was seeing on her IG page. I told my best friend James about her in 2023, how I had a crush and how I wasn't sure about her. What also held me back from asking her was the church I was apart cause they were like you can only date inside the church or within the other churches . While I was talking to my friend James about her , James(29) was in a relationship at the time but months later him and his girl broke up.
NOW...months go by James and Jean matched on hinge in November 2023!! He told me about it and he knows I had a crush/interested in her. Jean finds out me and James are best friends. So they matched and they started talking...
Eventually they went on a date this year 2024 and kissed.
I feel a certain way about it because James knew I had feeling/interest for her but I didnt asked her out..
Any thoughts on this situation?
I feel like a friend shouldn't go after friends' crush. For example, James had a crush on a girl I wouldn't go after her...

2024.05.14 06:43 Informal-Prompt5659 He left me

I am writing this because my friend told me I should start journaling about my situation. My situation is not too uncommon but I need to get this off my chest. I was recently in a relationship that lasted for 1 year. The break up literally tore me apart because he did everything he was supposed to do from spending time to going on dates. He was so engaging that we would have never ending conversations. We related on so many levels. As we got to know each other we developed what I now see as unhealthy behaviors. He was in a profession that allowed him to make his own schedule, I was in a profession that allowed me to take off time but I was unable to make up the hours missed. All of that was ok because we made plans on how to get right financially. He lived with his parents which was ok. We planned that he would move in with me because I own my house and if we went together on the mortgage it would be less for both of us so we could get our financial situations together. I loved hanging out with him so much that I began to make my schedule reflect his. Essentially working part time. I had a bad habit of drinking that i often told him I didn’t want to bring into our relationship. He agreed but then developed the same habit. We had so much fun together.. drunk. I hated it and loved it at the same time. Out of 365 days we were together 350, he never gave me no clue of cheating.. so I thought. One day we got drunk together… of course.. and he passed out on my couch. While he was out I was still up drinking. I reached down one the couch and felt his phone… my first thought was.. let me see if I know his code. First code I put in …correct. Me still clueless I go to his text messages thinking I won’t find anything, this man didn’t play about me. I scroll through and I see mostly clients, then I see a text that says “I love you” I open it. Scroll back over the whole year we had been together and see that he was planning a future from moving in together to having kids with this woman I now know to be one of his exes F/30… I could not breathe. I then go to his Snapchat and see conversations with a woman named Laura, again another ex.. I scroll though it and the whole year the same thing, planning a future from moving in together to having kids another F/30.. at this point I’m almost on my death bed.. question… what do I do?

I had a bad habit of drinking that i often told him I didn't want to bring into our relationship. He agreed but then developed the same habit. We had so much fun together.. drunk. I hated it and loved it at the same time. Out of 365 days we were together 350, he never gave me no clue of cheating.. so l thought. One day we got drunk together... of course.. and he passed out on my couch. While he was out I was still up drinking. I reached down the couch and felt his phone... my first thought was.. let me see if I know his code. First code I put in ...correct. Me still clueless I go to his text messages thinking I won't find anything, this man didn't play about me. I scroll through and I see mostly clients, then I see a text that says "I love you" I open it. Scroll back over the whole year w had been together and see that he was planning a future from moving in together to having kids with this woman I now know to be one of his exes F/30... I could not breathe. I then go to his Snapchat and see conversations with a woman named Laura, again another ex.. I scroll though it and the whole year the same thing, planning a future from moving in together to having kids another F/30.. at this point I'm almost on my death bed.. question... What do I do?
TL;DR;: he left me. For his exes. I think I messed up. Is this going the right way?

2024.05.14 06:34 Sin-God Reading Is What? F U N D A M E N T A L, Concept Understand Education Wonder Jump

Hi friends! Sometimes we can't go wrong with the classics and today we're doing a Jump Doc Analysis of Burkess's Concept Understand Education Wonder jump! As usual have a secondary link to my past discussion posts.

General Thoughts

I've noticed I always have a lot of fun with Burkess's odder jumps. One of my favorites of theirs is Generic Totally Not Mind Control, which is a hilariously powerful jump depending on the setting you're planning to go to, and this one is also shockingly powerful (there's a perk to become a concept, a perk to bring inanimate objects to life, and an item which can absorb all of the knowledge someone has! It's wild).
This jump is the ultimate one-stop-shop for teachers & educators, which is a VERY good skill for jumpers to master. Jumpers, particularly early jumpers, would be wise to figure out how to do teaching stuff and do it well, as being a teacher is a good profession for a jumper and also mastering teaching is a pretty powerful way to subtly or not so subtly guide, shape, and improve settings. Becoming a skilled teacher is a powerful key to figuring out how to alter the course of jumps without having big flashy powers, and being a skilled teacher is a heck of a way to craft better, or worse, ends for the places you visit.
I'm a member of a setting known as the Shiftverse, which is VAGUELY like a fusion of jumpchains and more generic isekai stuff and in it two skills are top of the line in almost any situation: farming/survival & teaching. Teaching is a critical way to become indispensable to a community or group of people that is in a moderately stable condition, while farming/survival is more critical for communities in dire conditions, but of the two skills teaching is usually the skill that produces the most change over the long-term. Teaching is a vastly underrated skill set for any sort of multiversal wanderer, and in this jump we start to see some of the real power of a teacher come to the fore. So let's dive in!

Items

There's only nine items in this jump, Jumper Academy, The Living Orphanage, Treats & Games, Teaching Materials, Experimental Lab, Book Of Concepts, Media Library, Your TV Show, & Hungry Knowledge.
Two of these items are books, Book of Concepts (the obligatory "You can spread abilities like the ones here throughout the setting) & Hungry Knowledge (which can grant magical knowledge to peeps!). Three of the items are places: Jumper Academy (Generic School item), Living Orphanage (an orphanage which naturally attracts little orphan peeps from throughout a setting), & Experimental Lab (self-cleaning, auto-adjusting laboratory for all of your experiments). Three items are collections of items; Treats & Games (fun prizes and rewards for your students), Teaching Materials (a collection of supplies for teaching stuff), and Media Library (a collection of copies of all of the media you've consumed and will consume in the future). The last item is Your TV Show which is a program you are the lead actor in which will naturally be geared around education in some capacity, AND a network which you control and can create more shows for.
I like these items, they're all pretty solid encapsulations of various scenarios related to learning and different contexts in which learning can occur. Honestly there's just a lot of fun to be had with these items, and a range of different jumpers would be able to benefit from looking over some of what this jump has to display in terms of items. Funnily enough there's no teaching certificate item here, which is a bit disappointing. Though if someone wants that, it's the free item for teachers over in my High School Musical jump which could be a very fun jump to use this as a supplement with.

Perks

There are many pages of perks, as is invariably the case in a jump like this. I have a few standout favorites and I want to talk about them for a beat.
Innovation is an immersive power-modifier that allows you to take all of your powers and figure out ways to creatively use them which grants you new abilities thematically tied to your powers. They Ask Questions & Always Employed are thematically relevant employment perks that guarantee that you'll find that people like and respect you more, and are more willing to ask you to help them learn new stuff. Retrocognition is a fun perk that lets you learn the pasts of places you visit and objects you touch. Some perks like A Customized Approach, Potential Unlock, and What's Your Motivation are perfect for tutors working with singular students or small groups and allow you to figure out how to create the best, most fulfilling stuff you can imagine to work with them and teach them.
Some of the perks here are direct superpowers like Know What I Know which is a telepathy granter, and Uplift Them and Creating Life which is a sentience granter and a life-creator (for inanimate objects) respectively. These perks are interesting, and all grant new contexts for you to mess about with your abilities and CREATE students for you to teach as well as figures you can learn from.
The perks here are a healthy mix of giving you new ways to get people excited about learning, allowing you to learn stuff from people (or even ghosts!), and ways to figure out how to best teach someone something. A lot of this stuff is really good for tutors specifically, as opposed to more modern teachers and lecturers, but make no mistake there's plenty of ways to leverage the stuff here to be handy among larger numbers of people.
The perks this jump offers are worth exploring yourself, but if you've ever thought about having a jumper who either uses a job as a teacher as a cover, or just IS a teacher who likes to explore and learn stuff this jump has a lot of fun stuff for you to snatch up. I think there's just a lot of different, interesting ideas this jump allows you to explore and gives you a set of skills and abilities that will be useful in virtually any context sans something truly extreme like you being in a jump where you are either alone or almost completely alone, or where you are well and truly surrounded by hostiles and you've just got to endure whatever bullshit the jump is throwing at you (and this jump has stuff for that too! Seriously, this is a very intriguing jump).

Conclusion & Parting Thoughts

This is a very intriguing mundane/cosmic citizen jump. I think it's funny that Burkess found some straight up superpowers related to teaching and learning and I appreciate that a jump as minor as this has some real powers in it. I also like that this jump just revolves around an essential skill, and takes that skill to some pretty intense heights without doing the traditional stuff like allowing you to teach someone your superpowers. It's cool to see such creative thoughts put into a jump and made into a fun playground for jumpers to mess around in.
