87 Labor Struggle: The popularization of labor movement in South Korea
1.New opportunity for workers: The fall of military dictatorship and the rise of Sixth Republic
Until 1987, the labor movement in South Korea was in its infancy, as the brutal right-wing junta unleashed a campaign of terror on anyone who raised their voice about workers' rights. Labor unions were heavily under government control, and democratic unions were limited to female workers in the textile industry. However, the atmosphere changed with the June 1987 Uprising.
Popular discontent was growing among the emerging middle class and college students as the military government refused to hold presidential elections through popular vote. Instead, the junta legitimized their government through an electoral college, denying the majority of the population a say in politics. In this atmosphere of discontent, Park Jong-cheol, a college student activist, was arrested and tortured to death by police, triggering a popular uprising against the military dictatorship.

Fig 2. Iconic photo of June Uprising
As popular protests demanding direct election of the presidency and a democratic constitution overwhelmed security forces, the military dictatorship was forced to compromise with the liberal opposition and adopt a new democratic constitution. This gave birth to a more democratic political system known as the 1987 system or Sixth Republic, under which South Korea still operates. This atmosphere of liberalization and democratization provided space for workers to organize.
2. Start of Uprising: Workers in Hyundai organize
June democratization Uprising came to an end with Roh Tae-woo, the presidential candidate of the Junta, announcing the June 29 Declaration and promising a direct presidential election and constitutional reform. However, from July onwards, workers launched vigorous organized actions, demanding the establishment of democratic labor unions, wage increases, and improvements in working conditions.
The July 8-9, 1987 labor struggle began at the Hyundai Group. On July 5, Hyundai Engine workers formed a union, and on July 16, tensions escalated as documents declaring the formation of a labor union by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard workers were confiscated. In response to workers' uprising, the chairman of Hyundai Chung Ju-young declared, "Until dirt gets into my eyes, unions will not be permitted." However, the workers responded, "Then we will put dirt in your eyes," and proceeded to form unions. Even the mighty Hyundai, one of Korea's largest conglomerates, could not resist the relentless tide of history.
In late July, the democratic labor movement expanded to the whole of Yeongnam region, as major factories in the Masan-Changwon area joined the uprising. On August 17th and 18th, over 30,000 workers from the Ulsan Hyundai Group Labor Union (currently Hyundai Motor Union) staged a sit-in protest. Workers from six Hyundai Group affiliates staged a united demonstration while wielding heavy equipment. Faced with protesters wielding heavy equipment, the police abandoned firing tear gas altogether. As the protest ended that day without major bloodshed as police fled in terror, the impact was immeasurable.

3. Workers in Daewoo rise up: death of Lee Seok Kyu
The Daewoo Shipbuilding labor union, established on August 11th, began negotiations with the company. On the 22nd, during the negotiation process, the union representatives, frustrated by the company's insincerity and stalling tactics, revised their initial demands. They proposed a basic salary increase of 20,000 won, an increase in site allowances by 20,000 won, and the introduction of a 10,000 won family allowance. However, the company rejected this proposal. In anger, the workers attempted to enter the hotel, but were beaten and chased to the beach by the Baekgoldan, a special police unit. During their second attempt to enter the hotel, the police suggested that they would allow a peaceful march, but then suddenly fired tear gas at them. In the chaos, Lee Seok-gyu was hit directly in the right chest by a tear gas canister. He was transported to the hospital but passed away at around 3:30 PM.
In the aftermath of his death, enraged colleagues sealed off the funeral parlor where his body lay, demanding, "We don't need money. Bring back Lee Seok-gyu!" Prominent figures such as Lee So-sun, mother of Jeon Tae-il, and lawyers Roh Moo-hyun and Lee Sang-soo arrived, forming a funeral preparation committee. Negotiations between the union and the company resulted in a compromise on various issues, including a wage increase, but workers demanded accountability for Lee's death and refused to compromise. Despite the union's decision to postpone the funeral until their demands were met, pressure from the government and the company intensified, leading to confrontations between the workers and authorities. On August 28th, amidst rain, the funeral procession finally proceeded to the Daewoo Shipbuilding Stadium, where over 20,000 people attended the funeral. However, upon reaching their destination, the procession was met with police brutality, resulting in arrests and the confiscation of Lee’s body by the authorities. Subsequently, a planned memorial event was forcibly cancelled, and the government cracked down on participants.

4. Government crackdown and the spread of uprising
Following this raid on Lee Seok-gyu's funeral, the government began a massive crackdown. On September 4th, riot police were deployed to disperse workers protesting at Daewoo Motor and Hyundai Heavy Industries, resulting in large-scale arrests. From September onwards, labor protests in the manufacturing sector gradually subsided. The military junta launched a public relations campaign, accusing workers of being influenced by external forces and attempting to isolate them from wider democratization movement. Employers responded with measures such as temporary closures of workplaces. Despite these efforts, labor activism spread to small and non-manufacturing businesses in the Seoul metropolitan area and Gyeongin region, with strikes continuing in various sectors such as transportation, mining, office work, sales, and services. During the July-August-September labor struggles, workers primarily demanded an 8-hour workday, labor law reform, protection of labor rights, guaranteed freedom to form unions, abolition of blacklists, ensuring the right to survival, improving working conditions, and raising low wages. These demands highlight that the labor struggle was fundamentally an economic democratization movement.
5. Aftermath: Underrated uprising
As a result of the labor struggle, by the end of December 1987, the number of labor unions had increased to 4,103 (from 2,675 in 1986), with 1,267,457 union members (up from 1,035,890 in 1986). Of the 3,749 labor disputes in 1987, 3,341 occurred during July-August-September. Above all, during this period, workers began to perceive labor unions as beneficial organizations for workers and started to understand the ideology and function of labor unions. They also began to explore effective ways to overcome conflicts and confrontations between labor and management. The 1987 labor struggle is considered the first large-scale expression of worker discontent, achieving outcomes such as the formation of democratic labor unions, democratization of non-regular workers' unions, and significant wage increases. This was, of course, one of the political effects of the June Uprising. Workers, who had been suppressed and oppressed by the strong repression of the junta government, began to actively assert their demands in a political environment where some degree of freedom was allowed. Subsequently, this movement for the establishment of labor unions led to the creation of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union in 1989, and the National Council of Trade Unions in 1990, setting up the scene for the series of major labor struggles and achievement in 1990s.
Despite these achievements and contribution to the democratization of South Korea, 87 Labor Struggle tends to be underrated and considered merely an epilogue to 1987 democratization. This is because of class divide shown in regard to how it was perceived by the wider democratization movement. The liberal opposition led by Kim Young-sam, urged workers to exercise restraint rather than politically exploiting the situation. This left the resolution of the conflicts to the junta government. Additionally, the middle class distanced themselves from the tlabor struggles. They were concerned that heir achievements from the June Uprising might be undermined. They feared too much chaos could result in counter-coup by the right-wing junta as it had been in 1960-1961 Second Republic and 1980 Seoul spring. Moreover, the June 29 Declaration came during a period of economic boom characterized by low oil prices, low interest rates, and a low dollar value, which lessen the need for the rising middle class to pursue labor movement. As a result, the memory of 87 Labor Struggle was relegated to an auxiliary uprising of larger 1987 democratization, foreshadowing the marginalization of labor still prevalent in modern South Korea.

A Telepathic Override that Probably Saved My Life: Contact Network History Project
A Telepathic Override that Probably Saved My Life:
Joseph Burkes MD 2019
Telepathy: transmission of information from one person to another without using any of our known sensory channels or physical interaction.
A KIND OF “KNOWINGNESS”
During the early 1990s on two occasions while doing fieldwork with my CE-5 contact team in Southern California, I experienced the acquisition of information by no known sensory channel. I suddenly “knew” one might say “at the level of knowledge” important details about sightings that subsequently occurred “as predicted.”
Our contact network had been advised by the CSETI Director that such forms of communication could possibly take place during our investigations. Nonetheless, it was very surprising when this actually happened to me. It was experienced not as a kind of “bolt out of the blue” but rather as a gentle confident sort of “knowingness” about what was to later take place on the night of our investigation.
In advance of the actual sighting, I knew when, where in the sky and the number of craft that would appear. Being open to this sort of “guidance” can be very helpful. I know this is true because one night in June 2007 such telepathic guidance compelled my driver to pull off a dangerous road.
We were on a road like the one pictured above e
A “TELEPATHIC OVERRIDE” POSSIBLY SAVED OUR LIVES
In 2007, I was commuting 1400 miles round trip every two weeks between LA and the college town Arcata, where my wife was living. It is located near the Oregon border. I did two weeks “on” in the ER and then ten days “off” with her. The remainder of the time I was either driving or flying across the state. What a schlep it was! (To use a Jewish expression.) Janie Krieger (a pseudonym) was a volunteer contact worker that lived in San Jose. This was about halfway to LA, so I often stopped by to see her and other contact activists in the Bay Area. On one particular trip, Janie and I decided to drive up a road to see if we might find an appropriate location where we might be able to do fieldwork
In the mountains to the east of San Jose, there is a county park that is accessible on a very treacherous road. It is a narrow two-lane highway that is bordered on one side by a deep ravine and on the other side by a steep rock face. This county road goes up the mountain with many switchbacks and has practically no shoulder or pullouts to move safely off the road in case of emergency. It was near dusk, and her tiny VW Bug slowly went up the winding path. There was no traffic in either direction. As we climbed higher into the foothills, every fifty to a hundred yards, we encountered a sharp curve to the right. The hairpin turns afforded no visibility as to what was beyond the curve in the road.
It was getting dark. We drove at perhaps twenty-five miles per hour on the straight portions of the road and far slower on the curves. I started feeling very uneasy. I experienced a premonition of danger, but I couldn’t figure out why I felt that way. Usually, my spirits are high when doing contact work. Janie was an excellent driver, so I should not have been alarmed.
Suddenly she blurted out, “I just got the message that we have to pull off the road.” I agreed with her without asking why because I too was feeling a sense of danger but had received no clear message as she did. But what were we supposed to do? On one side of the road was a hundred-foot drop into the ravine. On the other side was the wall of the mountain with no pullouts or highway shoulder in sight. We didn’t want to turn around and abandon our search. So, she slowed the vehicle, and we kept going. Fortunately, on one of the straight portions of the road we found a narrow shoulder. If we parked with one side of the Bug almost touching the rock face, we were mostly off the road. I got out of the car from the driver’s side because she had parked flush against the hillside. We then pressed ourselves against the wall of rock and waited.
In less than two minutes, we suddenly heard the roar of car engines. Around the curve there suddenly appeared two muscular sedans with thick tires designed for racing. I was shocked. The young male drivers were actually drag racing neck to neck down the narrow mountain road and they were taking up both lanes!
On the side of a straightaway portion of the road, where we had barely been able to park, they whizzed by us at what looked like close to fifty miles per hour. After they flashed past us with inches to spare, both drivers simultaneously jammed on the brakes as they approached a curve down the road. They whipped around that sharp turn with brakes screeching and disappeared.
Janie and I looked at each other in disbelief. If she had not received the warning to get off the road immediately, we probably would have been killed. With the ravine on one side and the rock face on the other, there was no place for us to go. Her tiny VW Bug would have been crushed and likely flung into the ravine like a child’s toy.
The idea that contact activists are actively being protected is something that I had heard prior to this incident. The notion that I, like many contactees, might have had a lifelong relationship with so-called “ETs” is something that I wonder about. On two occasions before age 18, I narrowly escaped death in what could have been fatal motor vehicle accidents. Many people believe that angels are looking after them. Contact experiencers sometimes say the same about aliens. The telepathic override that Janie reportedly experienced is something that I cannot prove to skeptics. The fact that we were on a mission for the loose network of activists that I refer to as the “Contact Underground” when this event occurred, should give courage to fellow contact workers. Not only are we not alone in the universe, but sometimes we might even be protected!

J. Burkes MD: I regret that I don't have an easy answer to your question about why non-human intelligences might choose to intervene or not depending on the circumstances. The blog was written primarily for contact activists or contact experiencers in general. One individual that Preston Dennett and I wrote about in Chapter Six on UAP healings in "Beyond UFOs" is a very prominent UFO researcher and author who requested that we not reveal her name. She was reportedly healed from a disabling condition called chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). She asked to be healed by the Grey aliens who were allegedly abducting her for decades. They reportedly did so one night when she was "taken" aboard an "ET craft." Following her remarkable sudden clearing of all symptoms from CFS, she subsequently asked them why they had afforded her the remarkable cure. The answer reportedly was "We heal our own!" One might conclude from this answer that because she had become a willing participant in the "alien" outreach effort, their successful treatment was transactional. She was helping them, so they helped her. This kind of relationship is rarely reported in the UFO subculture.

The road we were on looked like the one pictured above
2024.05.12 22:24 SFF_Questions_Asker Question about a CGI animation shown in Ashland, KY in the early 90s. Does anyone know about it?

Hello everyone,
A couple of years ago, a question was posted on Stack Exchange. The OP's brother, some time in the early 1990s, had been to visit a computer show somewhere in Ashland KY. That was where he'd seen an animation, which he described to the (then much younger) OP as follows:
The early part of the animation showed a fighter jet wending its way through canyons, flying in a very nap of the Earth fashion, with the end of the animation having a spacecraft rising off of a cliff wall and firing a shot that took the fighter jet down. I remember distinctly what he made the point that the spacecraft was not cloaked or otherwise invisible, but just painted in such a way that it blended perfectly with the background such that you didn't see it until it fired.
Part of me wants to say that he explicitly called out 3D Studio as having been used to make the video, but I could just be thinking about that in the context of that it was the accepted 3D software at the time.
...
And honestly, I don't know if my brother specifically mentioned it being a Klingon or Romulan vessel, or if I just assumed it based on him talking about the spaceship not being "cloaked", Star Trek being a very popular show for us at the time.
...
And this would have been in Ashland, KY, I think running on one of the machines at the Community College (although it was a demo setup, so they might have brought in outside machines).
There is already one possible answer posted in response to this, describing an unofficial mod of a Silicon Graphics flight sim demo that featured Star Wars and Star Trek craft as well as contemporary fighter jets. I'm not 100% sure that this is what the OP's brother saw, and so I'm posting here to ask if any of you attended this show back in the 90s and remember seeing this animation?

How to Survive in Broken Worlds: Jesmyn Ward on Octavia Butler’s Empathy and Optimism

“When I discovered Butler’s work, I discovered myself.”
By Jesmyn Ward 20221207

I can’t remember when I first read Octavia Butler’s work. It wasn’t in high school. I never encountered her in my coursework, as my required reading looked nothing like the books I found in my personal reading: I read The Last of the Mohicans, Catch-22, and The Catcher in the Rye and little there resonated with the world I knew.
I had grown up in a pooworking-class family in rural Mississippi, where I spent years eating government cheese, red beans, and rice, and drinking powdered milk. I lived in my grandmother’s four-bedroom house with fourteen other relatives and watched my extended family bear the brunt of poverty and racism through my childhood and adolescence.
I spent those years wandering through my school library stacks, finding books by Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Ntozake Shange, Richard Wright, Gabriel García Márquez, and Margaret Atwood. I found sustenance in literary writers and in science fiction and fantasy writers, too, needing the escapism of that kind of storytelling, which I had been drawn to since I was a small child and first read Tamora Pierce and Robin McKinley—but the only science fiction and fantasy I could find in my school library were by Frank Herbert, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Isaac Asimov.
I didn’t encounter Octavia Butler’s fiction in university, either. I majored in English, and I sought creative writing classes and literature classes that specialized in the African Diaspora. I read African writers and Black British writers and Black American writers and Black Caribbean writers, but all the work I read was poetry and literary fiction. It was good to study these artists, to seriously consider the kind of work I had been starving for in high school, but even though I attended school in mid- to late 1990s, when Octavia Butler was a living writer, full in her artistic flowering, I never found her work in the bookstore stacks or on the syllabi of my courses.
Even though I attended school in mid- to late 1990s, when Octavia Butler was a living writer, full in her artistic flowering, I never found her work in the bookstore stacks or on the syllabi of my courses.
I never really encountered any sci-fi or speculative fiction: when students submitted science fiction short stories or fantasy in creative writing workshops, my peers shunned them. They said the work was amateur, not serious, wasn’t about real people and therefore, real issues. I sat quietly at my desk, swallowing their critiques whole, quietly ashamed of the pleasure I got from reading sci-fi and fantasy.
I must have read Octavia Butler’s work for the first time in the early 2000s, when I was living in New York City as a young twenty-something, working as a publishing assistant. I had more money, not much, but more than I’d had in college and high school, so I’d take the train to The Strand, where the stacks stretched on and on. My browsing blossomed; I needed that.
I was floundering through life. Tragedy had loosed me from my moorings, my understanding of what the world was and how it worked, and it sent me spinning: a drunk river killed my brother Joshua in October 2000, and his killer was never held accountable for his death. I’d voted in my first presidential election and watched in confused horror as Bush was appointed by Supreme Court ruling.
I’d watched smoke billow from the Twin Towers on 9/11 and then spent hours walking from midtown to Brooklyn, peppered in ash. I’d marched through Manhattan to protest Bush’s preemptive war with Iraq, foolishly thinking our collective uprising would have some kine of impact, bitterly disappointed when I discovered it did not. I’d visited home and jumped from my car’s window and swum through the floodwaters of Hurricane Katrina, and then lived in shock in the desolation of the aftermath.
Her character development was disturbingly true to what I knew of the world, of poverty, of desperate human beings.
I found Parable of the Sower by chance in The Strand’s stacks. I devoured it. Butler’s prose was forthright and rhythmic. Her imagery was stark and startling. Her character development was disturbingly true to what I knew of the world, of poverty, of desperate human beings. It was harrowing and dark, and it seemed to reflect some ineffable terrible truth I found mirrored in the world. It reminded me that worse presents were possible. I sought out more of her books and found Parable of the Talents, the Lilith’s Brood trilogy, and Bloodchild and Other Stories. In Bloodchild, Butler says this about readers: “Actually, I feel that what people bring to my work is at least as important to them as what I put into it.”
In my twenties, I found this to be true, sunk in grief, bewildered at the savagery and terror of the 2000s; when I discovered Butler’s work, I discovered myself. I saw myself in her characters, empathized with them as they struggled to live in untenable worlds: in untenable circumstances. I knew they knew the taste of ash, the black scramble of floodwater.
I’m in my mid-forties now. If life revolves in cycles, I find myself in another crucible, another terrible span of time. The COVID-19 pandemic lingers and evolves, leaving weakened immune systems and millions of bodies in its wake. The Supreme Court struck down Roe, and the politicians in power can’t seem to grasp the urgency of the moment, to understand that not only are childbearing people uniquely disenfranchised by this ruling, but that we will die without access to abortion health care.
My partner of thirteen years died at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, leaving me with two grieving children and the charge of living in a fractured, unthinkable present. His death tasks me with this: every day I must wake and live. I must choose to move and breathe and speak and believe that there can be good in this world, in humanity, even though this fresh grief invites a drift toward despair, even though, as the ill characters do in “The Evening and the Morning and the Night,” I have wanted to claw out my own heart in hopelessness.
I saw myself in her characters, empathized with them as they struggled to live in untenable worlds: in untenable circumstances.
In multiple allusions in the preface and afterwords in Bloodchild, Butler alludes to the despair and bewilderment she encounters in her own life, and how she wrestles with it in her work. “Amnesty” is about an interpreter, kidnapped and tortured by aliens as a child, who works for and with that same alien race as an adult to improve communication between humans and their visitors. In the afterword to “Amnesty,” Butler writes that the story was inspired by “the things that happened to Doctor Wen Ho Lee of Los Alamos—back in the 1990s when I could still be shocked that a person could have his profession and his freedom taken away and his reputation damaged all without proof he’d actually done anything wrong.”
“Speech Sounds” follows a pandemic survivor who has witnessed the devolution of humanity after a fast-spreading disease robs those left of speech or the ability to read and write. In the afterword to “Speech Sounds,” Butler writes: “’Speech Sounds’ was conceived in weariness, depression, and sorrow. I began the story feeling little hope or liking for the human species, but by the time I reached the end of it, my hope had come back. It always seems to do that.” She elaborates on this in the afterword to “Bloodchild,” the title story, with:
When I have to deal with something that disturbs me … I write about it. I sort out my problems by writing about them. In a high school classroom on November 22, 1963, I remember grabbing a notebook and beginning to write my response to news of John Kennedy’s assassination. Whether I write journal pages, an essay, a short story, or weave my problems into a novel, I find the writing helps me get through the trouble and get on with my life.
This is how Butler finds her way in a world that perpetually demoralizes, confounds, and browbeats: she writes her way to hope. This is how she confronts darkness and persists in the face of her own despair.
This is the real gift of her work, a gift that shines in Bloodchild: in inviting her readers to engage with darker realities, to immerse themselves in worlds more disturbing and complex than our own, she asks readers to acknowledge the costs of our collective inaction, our collective bowing to depravity, to tribalism, to easy ignorance and violence. Her primary characters refuse all of that. Her primary characters refuse to deny the better aspects of their humanity. They insist on embracing tenderness and empathy, and in doing so, they invite readers to realize that we might do so as well. Butler makes hope possible.
The hope might be tenuous, and our lives might not be what we envisioned in these ruptured realities, but new ways of being are near. These are futures where we might turn from despair and build another family after a pandemic. Where we might elect to foster life and connection. Where we might wake every day and choose to breathe, to walk, to do work and heal ourselves and others even though we struggle with suicidal ideation, with nihilism, with grief. Bloodchild is a template for how to survive, how to thrive, in broken worlds, and Butler’s work is ever prescient, ever powerful. Her voice: a rough balm.

Chrisean Rock Astrology Forecast As Of May 11, 2024

With Mother's Day tomorrow and Chrisean Rock being a new mom, let's just do an updated astrology reading for her by checking her birth chart.
As we know, Chrisean was born in Baltimore and is known for her appearance on Baddies with Natalie Nunn and her own show she had with Blueface.
We know that she is a Pisces which is her sun sign/zodiac sign. She has a Cancer Moon which rules your emotions and emotional state.
Uranus is currently sextile Chrisean Rock's sun which means that she will be openly showing unpredictability and will likely be shocking people and even herself.
Uranus is in her 12th house which is the house of the unknown and blind spots as well. This can mean that she will have breakthroughs and insights. Could even result in premonitions and informative dream states.
Pluto is the planet known for exposing and causing change and this planet is currently opposing her North Node which shows that there will be a gradual process in her doing what she is supposed to be doing and going in the right direction. Pluto isn't making any connections with her personal planets yet, so she isn't expected to be going through anything too major right now.
Jupiter sextile her sun is giving her the expanding energy for her sports endeavor. Her Aries Mars will always see her through naturally though.
Let's go forward to the following month, June on this day to see what she may be experiencing.
Jupiter is the ruler of her 7th and 10th house and on June 11, 2024, she will have Jupiter squaring her Venus and Mercury which means that there can be issues with points getting across or communication issues between her and family or her and Blueface. She is likely to be intuitive around this time with Jupiter making a trine to her natal Neptune.
Since Jupiter will be squaring her Mercury and Venus, let's put focus on the fact that Mercury rules her ascendant and 4th house which is why there can be a link with family or her lover if it isn't about her mindset. Virgo being in her 4th house though makes it more tangible. Venus rules her 12th house and 5th house of romance and children. Basically this whole Jupiter aspect transit could be connected to her family. Let's see what happens.

Chrisean Rock Numerology Report

This Numerology report will be for Chrisean Rock who was born in Baltimore Maryland and who is a star based on her connection to Blueface and Natalie Nunn's Baddies show on Zeus Network.
Chrisean's Numerology Report will be a decoding all from her name, not her birthday. Her birthday is one thing that can't ever change in her lifetime so that energy is fixed and general.
Chrisean's full name is "Chrisean Eugenia Malone". I will first decode her first name separately as it's the most significant energy and then I will do a full name decode as well.
Let's start breaking down her name.
C - This is the third letter of the alphabet which gives it the energy of 3 and 3 energy could be very social or creative. This can also give someone a child like impression or there could be something about them that is very jolly or it reminds you of a child sometimes. This can make them come off approachable at times as well. Names that start with this letter, it makes three and the letter C the most significant energy. This shows how Chrisean and anyone else who has a name that starts with this letter approaches the world and people around them in a very curious manner. These people wake up every day waiting to explore and seeing what they can learn or find out for that day.
H - H is connected to energy that has pressure but this is also connected to ambition as well. This could be why Chrisean has a lot of ambition and the capability of mastering something in her lifetime which also fits well with the number 9 which is connected to her R and I letters.
R - This letter vibrates at the number 9 even though it is the 18th letter and this gives someone the capability of mastering themselves or mastering something physical or amazing. This also gives them strong, ambitious energy as well and we can see that she has a very fit body and into sports, plus she has an Aries Mars.
I - This is the 9th letter of the alphabet which makes someone very adventurous by nature and they have the capability of being quick to take action. This is very spontaneous energy so when people have this letter in their name, they can definitely shock people a lot. This also contributes to someone being a traveler of some sort so people with this letter in their name, especially more than once can indicate someone that is likely going to be taking trips or flying planes. They basically will get out of their hometown even if they return to it, but they will know what another country and city looks like for sure.
S - Being the 19th letter of the alphabet gives this letter the energy of one, but it is the energy of empowerment right from within and this could be someone that wants to do their own thing as well. These people could be impulsive or they know how to take initiative, especially when something has really motivated them or sparked their interests.
E - This is the 5th letter of the alphabet which gives someone the energy of creativity and this can also make someone visually appealing or they could have some type of creative skill. This also contributes to the energy of complexity, but she only has this once so it's not too complex, at least not from this letter. This letter gives her a fighting power or a fighting spirit so she is capable of utilizing her natural strength to overcome difficulty.
A - This is the first letter of the alphabet which contributes to independence and action.
N - This is the 14th letter of the alphabet which vibrates at the energy 5 just like E, but a matured version. This adds onto her capability of overcoming difficulty and also being creative or making something tangible from her creativity.
Looking into her full name, she has a Destiny Number 1, soul urge 5, and personality #5.
5 is the number connected to romance, children, war, and unpredictability which is definitely fitting as she always shocked people with her actions and how combative she is, but she is pretty aware as well.
Based on her #1 Destiny number, She is meant to come into her personal power and experience some ease, but this 1 energy may also contribute to her child-like actions as well. She is wise, although the 1 energy is connected to new spirit type of energy. The fact that she has this matches with her strong Aries Mars influence. The 1 destiny number also is why she takes things personal to a fault.
Her having a 5 soul urge gives her natural fighting powespirit. This also connects to her romantic nature and how she always wanted Blueface to please her or she put their romantic life on blast, but not for attention, just from a natural place.

2024.05.10 16:50 thinkingstranger May 9, 2024

Last night, 163 Democratic representatives joined 196 Republicans to stop far-right Republicans from removing House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). Georgia representative Marjorie Taylor Greene led the effort to remove Johnson, but her motion received only 43 votes: 32 Democrats and 11 Republicans. Twenty-eight representatives either did not vote or voted present.
Greene promptly excoriated the “uniparty,” saying that “the Democrats now control Speaker Johnson. That was something that everybody’s suspected all along. They just voted to save him.”
But the majority of the House Republican conference appears to be tired of the chaos in their ranks that has made this Congress one of the least productive in American history. Jordain Carney and Olivia Beavers of Politico reported today that House Republicans who are not aligned with Greene and her cohort want to change House rules to create punishments for the extremists who keep stopping House business by, for example, voting against letting bills come to the floor of the House.
Greene and Thomas Massie (R-KY), her main ally in trying to oust Johnson, urged their colleagues to bring it on. Massie said that anyone trying to stop them was going to “take an ass-whooping from their base.”
Since the 1990s, right-wing media hosts have directed the Republican base, telling them what to think and urging them to put pressure on Republican lawmakers to do what the media hosts wanted. Talk radio host Rush Limbaugh was so influential in the 1990s that when Republicans took control of the House of Representatives in 1995 for the first time since 1954, they made him an honorary member of their incoming congressional freshman class. And what Limbaugh did for radio, Fox News Channel hosts like Bill O’Reilly did for television.
But Limbaugh died in February 2021, and after the Fox News Channel (FNC) had to pay a $787 million settlement to Dominion Voting Systems for the lies the network’s hosts told about the company’s voting machines in the 2020 election, it let go of main host Tucker Carlson. There are indications that FNC founder and former chair Rupert Murdoch hoped to center Republican messaging around young activist Charlie Kirk, but Kirk has slid into MAGA extremism, too.
The Republican extremists no longer have a centralized messaging center. Instead, as CNN’s Oliver Darcy noted today, Murdoch’s outlets themselves—the Fox News Channel, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post—stood behind Johnson.
Yesterday, FreedomWorks, the right-wing organization that was backed by the Koch family at its start in 2004 and that was behind the Tea Party movement, abruptly shut down. FreedomWorks attacked Democratic measures for business regulation and social welfare because it embraced libertarian principles. Its revenue had dropped by half since 2022, its president, Adam Brandon, told Luke Mullins of Politico. But in the end, what did the organization in was the party’s split over Trump.
That split was crystal clear in Tuesday’s Republican primary election in Indiana. Trump won that election, but with only 78.3% of the vote. Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, who suspended her campaign in early March and has not campaigned since, won 21.7%.
Before the Indiana primary, on May 2 political statistician Tom Bonier debunked the idea that Haley’s support came from Democratic-leaning voters flooding the primary vote to hurt Trump. Crunching the numbers in North Carolina showed that Haley voters there “were not substantially younger than the GOP voters (41% over 65 vs 45% among reg[istered Republicans]). They were overwhelmingly white (94% of Ind[ependent]s vs 97% of [Republicans]), and were actually more likely to be men (51% of Ind[ependent Republican] primary voters vs 50% of [Republicans]).” In short, he wrote, “[e]very indicator suggests these Independents voting in [Republican] primaries are more likely [Republican] voters. They just don't like Trump.”
Political commentator Chris Cillizza today called attention to the numbers that landed before Tuesday. On March 12, Haley won 13.2% of the vote in Georgia (or 78,000 votes). On March 19 she won 17.8% of the vote in Arizona (111,000 votes), 13.9%* of the vote in Florida (155,000 votes), and 14.4% of the vote in Ohio (161,000 votes). On April 2 she won 12.8% of the votes in Wisconsin (77,000 votes). And on April 23, Haley won 16.6% of the votes in Pennsylvania (158,000 votes).
If Biden picks up even one in five of these votes, Cillizza noted, “it matters bigly.”
Three high-level Republicans this week told media they would not vote for Trump, helping to pave an off-ramp for other Republicans. Former House speaker Paul Ryan told Yahoo Finance that he would write in another Republican rather than vote for Trump. “Character is too important to me,” he said.
Cassidy Hutchinson, former aide to Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, also cited character when she said she would not vote for Trump. “I’ve never voted for a Democrat in my life, but I would absolutely consider voting for Joe Biden this upcoming November because he will not seek to destroy our nation [or] our Constitution, and he has the statesman character that we need in an elected official.”
Georgia’s former lieutenant governor Geoff Duncan went further on Monday night, endorsing Biden, whom he had called in an op-ed a “decent person I disagree with on policy,” over Trump, whom he described as “a criminal defendant without a moral compass.” “Sometimes the best way to learn your lesson is to get beat, and Donald Trump needs to get beat. We need to move on as a party. We need to move on as a country,” he said.
Meanwhile, as Khaya Himmelman noted in Talking Points Memo, MAGA Republicans are already blaming a potential loss in 2024 on illegal voters. On Wednesday, Speaker Johnson and other Trump Republicans held a press conference to promote their new bill to make it illegal for people who are not U.S. citizens to vote in federal elections.
This is a political stunt: It is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections, and there is no evidence that this is happening. In 2017, Trump created a commission to root out the illegal voting he claimed had affected the 2016 election; less than a year later, he disbanded it when it could find no evidence of his claims. Johnson admitted there was no evidence of voting by undocumented immigrants when he told reporters: "We all know, intuitively, that a lot of illegals are voting in federal elections. But it's not been something that is easily provable. We don't have that number."
Pulitzer Prize–winning author T.J. Stiles retorted: “People terrified of contact with government because they don’t want their lives destroyed by deportation don’t register to vote illegally and then vote illegally for the reward of having a tiny tiny influence on federal electoral outcomes.”
For his part, Trump appears to have tried a more direct approach to reelection. According to Josh Dawsey and Maxine Joselow of the Washington Post, last month at Mar-a-Lago, Trump told about two dozen top oil executives that if they gave him $1 billion to get reelected, he would immediately reverse the environmental regulations the Biden-Harris administration has put into place and stop any new ones. A $1 billion gift would be a “deal,” according to Trump, because the tax cuts he plans to enact and the regulatory cuts would be worth far more than that. Since then, Ben Lefebvre wrote yesterday in Politico, oil executives have been drawing up executive orders that Trump can sign as soon as he takes office.
Yesterday, in an interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett, President Biden said the U.S. would continue to supply defensive weapons to support the Iron Dome over Israel, but it would not send offensive weapons to Israel if it went forward with its controversial invasion of the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, where more than a million Palestinians have taken shelter from Israeli strikes. The administration has publicly opposed that invasion since Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced it. “If they go into Rafah, I'm not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah,” Biden said. “Civilians have been killed in Gaza as a consequence of those bombs and other ways in which they go after population centers.”
Trump and other Republicans promptly accused President Joe Biden of “taking the side of these terrorists, just like he has sided with the Radical Mobs taking over our college campuses.”
“We’re not walking away from Israel’s security,” Biden told Burnett. “We’re walking away from Israel’s ability to wage war in those areas.”

*EDITED AT 9:30 AM EASTERN, MAY 10, 2024: A typo had this number as 3.9%. It is now correct.

2024.05.09 21:21 volcs0 Trying to find info / nostalgia about two ultras from the 1990s (Iowa and Wisconsin)

I hope this is OK to post here.
I did a handful of ultras back in the mid 1990s, and I've recently wanted to go down memory lane and find out more about these races - even get my times/distances, if they are available.
  1. Heritage Trail 50K - in Iowa - probably 1996, maybe 1997. I still have the sweatshirt (obviously), but there is no date. I remember it was an out-and-back x 2 course, and at the end, they served sloppy joes (a.k.a. Maid-Rites in Iowa). It was cold out - so likely fall/winter.
  2. Ripon, WI - 12/24 hour. I did the 12-hour race around the track at Ripon college. Also probably 1996/1997, in the summer, because I remember it was very hot.
Any info or memories of these would be appreciated. I have a few pictures, but not much else. Thanks.

2024.05.06 17:59 grenz1 A bit underwhelmed with therapy in general. Is it just me?

I am an older guy currently going back to college. (50 M)
Last summer, my mom died.
Ended up dropping a class that summer due to me being an only child and fearing the work load.
One my instructors at my college when I was struggling that Fall is suggested I use a program for free therapy via a partnership they have with a college for therapists in another city in the southern portion of the state,
Feeling a bit overwhelmed and distracted from my studies, I agreed. Plus, who can argue with FREE for something that usually costs 100 to thousands a pop. I had had teeth done by dental students long ago, and they did good work.
Signed up and by Spring semester, I had a zoom therapist.
Now, beforehand, I had only been to a therapist ONCE. It was couples therapy for an abusive exwife I had back in the 1990s at some Christian Seminary. Man, was that a train wreck! But I blame that on the ex wife wanting drama. Plus I don't think those guys had to be certified or anything. Not that a certification would have helped a situation I needed to run from anyways..
So I went in with an open mind.
I was going to be assigned an older lady in her 60s. Someone who had her MS already going for a Doctorate. Someone that college had high respect for.
The issue?
Man. half the time she was disengaged. I know I can talk a bit, but I kind of wanted feedback. It's nice to hear feedback that is not a work setting, from relatives, or my current wife from an outside perspective.
Sometimes she just would not show up. Emails that were not excessive just to see if it's okay, not answered.
A full half the sessions interrupted with grandkids in the background where she would be off attending to them or me muted while she drifted away. Sometimes for upwards of 20-30 minutes.
Now, as a student myself, I get cruising through. I have assignments and classes I skate through as well chasing that paper.
But darn.
I think I got pushed through most of my issues (though there still is the matter of my place being messy as hell just from course load and just not caring), but I feel I did it myself.
At least it was free and my issues I feel I pushed through on my own, But heck, I would be in a world of hurt if my issues were more serious or I was plopping down 200 USD or more a pop on this.
Now supposedly, summer, that place is getting me a new one as this one is graduating with her PhD. But there's a part of me that just wants to drop it altogether. Handle stuff on my own.
Is this a reasonable stance or am I being too demanding? My grades DID go up, but I feel it's via my own coping mechanisms. Not the therapy.
TLDR: Had a free college program therapist that seemed disinterested at best. Considering dropping this and handling my own affairs as continuing I feel is a waste of time.

2024.05.06 16:03 Present_Chapter_1598 Got hit on twice in one night at a geeky music concert, it was really weird

TL;DR - I'm a married geeky guy who was never "nudged" at a show before, and it opened my eyes to concert hookup culture, as well as the privilege of being a straight, white male.
Throwaway, because I'd rather not share this incident with people I actually know. But I also want to type this out in its entirety and gets some responses, because it was just so bizarre to me.
I'm M44, white, hetero. I've been told I give off safe "dad vibes" for most of my life (yes, even starting at the age of ten I was cast as "the dad" or "the grandpa" in every goddamn play). I wasn't super attractive, and my less than edgy, nerdy vibe didn't work out in my favor when I was coming of age in the 1990s. Geek culture was still looked down on, and the internet wasn't what it was today, and geeky girls just didn't exist in my world.
Eventually I move to a new town and I date a very attractive, nerdy girl in high school. In college I date once or twice and end up with a GORGEOUS girl who's smart, funny, talented, etc. We get married, have two kids, and our relationship has always been rock solid. Obviously I notice other women, but I keep strict tabs on my feelings, the amount of time I spend alone with another woman, etc. My wife respects me, I want to respect her.
My wife is definitely NOT a geek. She will watch most of my nerdy shit with me (Mandalorian, Fallout, etc.), but would probably never do so on her own. Her mom and mom's sister were raised in a very geeky household, though, to the point where her aunt owned her own comic book store. So my wife is "nerd friendly," but when I asked her to see this VERY geek oriented music band (sort of a synthwave/rock group that dresses in costumes - their name is TWRP), she had to pass. I had never been to a concert solo before, but I see geeky movies by myself all the time. Why should this be any different? I kissed her goodbye and went to the show.
I was the oldest person there by about ten to fifteen years. Lots of 20-30 something geeks of all genders, expressions, orientations, etc. It was cool to be out of my usual suburban comfort zone.
I find a place about 20 feet from the stage when these two girls eventually start standing next to me. I hear them remarking on the diversity of the crowd, etc. The music starts, but I can still hear them. The one closer to me says "he's cute". I then feel a nudge on my elbow. I don't think anything of it, so I keep bopping to the music, minding my own business. Then I get another nudge. Out of the corner of my eye I see the girl also getting into the music, but I can't tell if she's looking at me or not.
So this, dear reader, this is when I make the decision to not react in anyway whatsoever. Because there are two things that could occur: 1) she's extremely attractive, and I'd be tempted to reciprocate or 2) she's not attractive, and I move away from her and make her feel bad. So for the next half hour she keeps playfully bumping into me, while venting to her friend that I'm not acknowledging it. "What's wrong with him?" "Does he not get it?" She at one point falls to the floor in some apparent act of embarrassment (?). Then, and I'm swear I'm not making this up, she pulls out her phone and films me on her selfie mode and says "this is the guy I was trying to get with."
Guys, I tried flashing my wedding band, but it was no use. She said to her friend "c'mon, this guy is so cute. He's just the kind of guy I like." So weird, and so outside of ANYTHING I've ever experienced before in my life. Then eventually I hear them whispering that maybe I'm gay, and that must be the reason why. So after the first band, they giggle and wander off (though they ended up back next to me later on).
But almost as if they willed it into happening, shortly after they leave I start feeling more nudges. First is a poke on one of my ass cheeks. Then a few playful taps to my hip - this time it's a long haired guy dancing behind me. At this point I figure I need to start sending signals back, so I shake my head "no" several times. But then he keeps doing it! So after each hit, I keep shaking my head "no". To no avail.
The second act is up there and makes a comment about how consent is important. He asks the crowd something like "do you all think consent is important?" and I yell "yeah, I wish others did". I think the guy behind me got the hint. A new song starts and he really brushes into me, but gives a sincere "I'm sorry". And that was finally that.
I was finally able to enjoy the rest of the show without being nudged, but I couldn't believe it. So people LITERALLY hit on other people at clubs and at concerts? I've had people flirt with me before, but I've never dealt with such a basic, animalistic way of trying to get a person's attention.
Anyway, it actually made for a pretty exciting night. And I felt like I had passed a test, you know? And when the show finally ended, I finally looked at the girl....and she wasn't my type. But thank goodness I stuck to my guns and didn't check her out before...I just think that would have been the wrong decision.
But another "nudge" I received later was when I started to wonder "why me?" Was I really that great? I looked around the room and realized that the demographic was REALLY awkward and unkempt. Most of the dudes weren't conventionally attractive or dressed really poorly. And the ones who did put some effort into their appearance weren't, let's say, gender conforming. Which is totally fine, but that's when I realized that I was a rare commodity. I was a straight, white, well groomed and confident guy. That might not be everyone's cup of tea, but if that's what you ARE into, I was probably your best bet that night. In my day to day life, I mostly hang around with other straight, white people. I don't feel special or privileged, but I totally know it exists. But this was the first time in my life where, in a social situation, I was seeing my privilege play out in such a public manner.

2024.05.06 11:04 JG98 Today I want to highlight Jaspal Bhatti, the beloved comedian and social satirist.

Today I want to highlight Jaspal Bhatti, the beloved comedian and social satirist.
Jaspal Bhatti (March 3 1955 - October 25 2012) was a giant in the South Asian comedy scene. Born in Amritsar, he spent his first ten years with his grandmother in Ambala, a city known for its rich cultural heritage. It is here where instilled in him a strong sense of Panjabi identity and a deep appreciation for tradition, elements that would later find subtle expression in his later work.
Unlike his comedic contemporaries, Bhatti's path to fame wasn't paved with acting schools or reality TV. He began his career as an engineer, who graduated with an electrical engineering degree from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. It was during his studies where he first showcased his hidden talent for social commentary and a sharp wit, that would one day propel him to become one of most beloved satirists in South Asia.
During his college years, Bhatti was involved in the formation of "The Nonsense Club," a street theatre group in Chandigarh. Their skits tackled social issues with humor, garnering local attention and showcasing Bhatti's nascent talent for social satire. He even dabbled in cartooning, expressing his observations with a humorous pen for the Tribune newspaper, demonstrating his versatility as a satirist.
The late 1980s and early 1990s marked Bhatti's entry into television, something that would quickly solidify his place in Indian pop culture and beyond. Shows like "Flop Show" became national phenomenons. The genius of "Flop Show" resided in its relatable simplicity. Bhatti, with his signature deadpan humor, portrayed the common man's struggles against an overbearing bureaucracy, nonsensical red tape, and the hilarious awkwardness of everyday situations. His portrayal resonated deeply with audiences who saw themselves reflected in his characters. "Ulta Pulta" (meaning "Topsy-Turvy") took this a step further. The show presented a world where logic stood on its head, further highlighting the absurdities of real life. His wife, Savita, became a constant presence on screen, adding a layer of warmth and realism to their comedic routines.
Bhatti wasn't merely an entertainer; he was a social crusader who wielded humor as a weapon. He took on corruption head-on, forming the mock political party "Hawala Party" – a hilarious yet scathing commentary on the political landscape. This satirical venture showcased Bhatti's commitment to social activism and his willingness to challenge the status quo. He never strayed far from his roots, returning to Chandigarh to perform street plays, ensuring he remained connected to the real people whose struggles he depicted on television.
Bhatti's life was tragically cut short in a car accident in 2012. However, his legacy as a social satirist remains unmatched. His shows continue to be cherished, his one-liners still quoted with fondness. Bhatti's genius resided in his ability to use humor as a scalpel, exposing societal ills while making audiences laugh. Titles like "King of Comedy" and "King of Satire" are testaments to the impact he made. Jaspal Bhatti wasn't just an unlikely engineer turned comedian; he was a voice for the voiceless, a social commentator who reminded everyone that laughter could be a powerful tool for awakening and change.

2024.05.06 08:59 LinkingForces Deep dive on ASVAB scores.

Hello, I have been in for about 13 years now. I got a 98 on the ASVAB and a 97 on the AFOQT. I am here to teach y'all a little about the ASVAB score, what it means, how it is calculated, and how to best spend time to improve your score.
The armed services vocational aptitude battery is a percentile based score, 1-99, with the MAGE (Mechanical, Administrative, General, and Electronics) also scored as percentile. These percentiles are 'renormalized)' very rarely, the last one happening in 2004 based off of data collected in 1997 during the "PAY97" https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/pdfs/ADA408911.pdf has more information on how the scores changed from 1980 datasets.
The test is broken into 9 subtests with the following number of questions and durations. You will notice that there is also a VE score, for Verbal Expression. Each of the 4 MAGE scores is calculated off of these subtests. The subtests are not percentile, but Deviation scored. The ASVAB standard deviation is set to 10. Therefore, if you receive a score of 60, you have scored one standard deviation above the mean. If you receive a score of 70, you have scored two standard deviations above the mean, and so on. So your score isn't the number of questions you answered correctly, but how many questions you answered correctly in comparison to others (from high school in 1997) who have taken the test (where it didn't affect their grade at all).
(Table source https://www.airforce.com/asvab )
M Mechanical = VE + AR + MC + AS A Administrative = VE + MK G General = VE + AR E Electrical = AR + MK + EI + GS
Look at this table, do you notice something very (boldly) interesting? VE and AR are in 3 of the MAGE scores each!
VE is a combination of WK and PC. Therefore, the three most important things to study for a good score are Word Knowledge**,** Paragraph Comprehension, and Arithmetic Reasoning.
How do you study for these? https://play.freerice.com/categories/english-vocabulary?level=1 can help you cram for vocabulary. Every time you get a correct answer you earn some food to donate to some hungry people for a little altruism thrown in. When I prepped for the AFOQT I used Chrome, FireFox, Opera, and Edge at the same time so that I could do three in English and one in Spanish at the same time to get word practice in faster. This will massively increase your ability to understand what you are reading and multiple choice (VE).
https://archive.org/details/msdos_Number_Munchers_1990 can help you get faster at math. This 1990's educational game is available on a lot of websites but this one is the least ad-laden. Set the difficulty to 8th grade in options and practice your math speed / accuracy under pressure as the monster tries to eat your green math frog. MK scores are likely to improve just doing this, and that makes the AR parts easier.
http://www.free-clep-prep.com/College-Algebra-CLEP.html This website will be invaluable to you once you are enlisted because it helps you study to test out of college classes and finish your CCAF really quickly. This particular study guide and practice information will really help bolster your AR score.
Of course you can study everything, but focusing on just these three resources to improve your math and reading, you can boost all four of your MAGE scores.

At the age of 21( 1997) , Kanye West was deeply involved in his early music career. This was around the late 1990s, a time when he was starting to make a name for himself as a producer rather than a rapper. He attended Chicago State University but eventually dropped out at age 20 to pursue music full-time, a decision that heavily influenced his later album titled "The College Dropout."
During this period, West was honing his skills as a producer, crafting beats primarily influenced by his trademark style of sped-up soul samples. He started making connections in the music industry, laying the groundwork for his future success. Although he wasn't yet the global superstar he would become, his production work was beginning to get noticed by major artists and labels.

2024.05.06 05:32 rdk67 Spring Day 47: Strike School and Gaggles v. Graduates

Once the leaves have opened on the bigger trees and the ground begins to flicker with various shades of green – the leaves, at the moment, are like oceans hatching – the light passing through seems the wiser for finding the ground. I am walking to a presentation by labor activists called Strike School – when labor uses a strategic work stoppage to get negotiations moving. Workers have resorted to this a few times around campus, and I’ve been adjacent to some of them. I was a grad student when the first talks began about forming the graduate employees organization. My partner in the 1990s started the education support person’s union, and union conversations were an important part of our relationship. Before then, in the mid-1980s, I was the editor of a college newspaper that covered the longest college faculty strike in state history – about 2 weeks
during which time, my staff and I met at a local fast food place for editorial meetings, refusing of course to cross the picket lines. The strike was extremely effective at stopping the place cold, but before then even, we published the shock headline after the faculty declared their intent to strike – the largest font we could reasonably paste up. The newspaper was composed on light boards, with exact-o knives used to trim the pieces to size and arrange them on sheets shaped like the pages of the newspaper. These were the final days of paste-up newspaper production, and I was there to smell the hot wax, which is what we used to affix the copy to the page. The pages were then photographed and made into the plates used to print the newspaper. Not long after the issue hit the stands, the president of the college called me into his office and threatened
to defund the newspaper and, I guess this went without saying, fire me as editor – he thought our content was biased. When I was growing up, agro adults routinely threatened me in various ways, and this seemed like the norm for a certain subset of kids whose parents hadn’t attended college and whose family didn’t know anyone else who did – working class kids. Adults would know they could blow a fuse in front of you, and it would seem normal, so they did. I made a little money being the editor but not a lot – I could have walked away from it – but the guy was wrong, and I was right, and that really didn’t matter at all. I had four jobs at that point in my life: newspaper editor, grocery store do-it-all, weekend shelf stocker of cookies, and weekend shelf stocker of bread – the latter two being private deals between me and a couple of venders.
There was so much wisdom on the stage, talking about the purpose of strikes, I stopped taking notes and just listened. The 1930s saw the rise of the militant industrial labor unions – possibly the closest the county would come to harboring a capacity for broad-based insurrection – four million people in the general population participated in work stoppages, thereby forcing the nation to refine a civil response to the needs of labor, which humanizing legacy is still with us today. I recall an historic study that showed how the plea agreement became a legal practice to work around the phenomenon of jury revolts – juries with industrial laborers would refuse to find guilt when one of their number was being railroaded by the state. Railroaded is an idiom suggesting the relentlessness of modernity. It is a reference to the assertion: force over fairness.
Walking to and from the venue, and recounting other moments during the past week, I have identified what might be a new phenomenological rivalry – between those who make videos of goslings with their Canadian geese parents and those who take photos of cap-and-gown college graduates. Yes, I know – very different populations – but in each, the happiness on display is so abundant, I fantasize about growing things with it. The graduation photographers use camera rigs that remind one of large animal horns – they point the horn at the college graduate, and so they pose and smile. I watch a mom and dad, both in their own caps-and-gowns, take a photo of their son leaping in the air, legs pointed sideways at the knee. He does it four or five times in a row, take after take, and I imagine them to be the kind of family that enjoys that sort of thing.
Earlier in the season, I watched a group of six goslings and their two parents congregate around a section of boneyard creek. The parents leapt off the bank and flew into the water, and the little peeps danced along the top, cheeping anxiously about the great heights they were abandoned to. The goslings followed the two adults downstream, right in front of me, sitting cross legged on a low stone wall, and I watch the chicks work up the nerve to fling themselves over the edge. They don’t really have wings yet – their wings come out like someone signaling with flashlights or flags, and they hit the water like ping pong balls. One of the adults demonstrates a technique for plucking weeds off the shore, shaking the muddy roots in the water, then swallowing them. A little one does the same thing, but then it forgets to eat, keeps splashing the water with its bill.
When the goslings show up, they are outside the boundaries of expectation – the dignity of their posture, the blend of yellow and gray feathers, like they’re half-bird half-cloud, the perfect way the bill meets the face – everything about them pries cellphones out of pockets, sends clips with cute captions soaring out across social media even before the goslings have finished crossing the road. The videographers are all smiling – for the goslings, for the likes, for the friendliness with which goose and gander so casually share space with their categorically helpless offspring, the fuzziness of which inspires an urge to cradle one in cupped hands while imagining that none of them really weighs anything yet. Cradling a pleasant thought in one’s hands. Cradling cheers for the new day in one’s hands. Dipping from the well of remembering, lifting it up to your lips.
