2019.09.02 03:23 Cosmic-Engine Weird question not directly connected to the site, but relevant to it. No hurry - this is VERY minor.

So first of all, this isn’t directly related to 9anime. It’s also a very low priority issue: A very minor annoyance that doesn’t interfere with my experience very much at all. If you’re busy with anything, it’s probably best to just ignore this.
If people feel that this post shouldn’t be here because it’s technically a violation of the rules, they can delete it if they have that ability or simply let me know by either responding in the thread, or sending a PM & I’ll delete it. If it gets a bunch of downvotes that’s a clear enough message that I should get rid of it as well - no hard feelings. :)
I looked around to other communities and searched to see if anyone else had posted about this and didn’t find anything - though I might have missed something of course. None of the other subs really seemed to fit, plus I know the folks here and they’re generally kind, knowledgeable, and helpful.
Of course the more knowledgeable, the more busy they are - so I’ll try to keep this short (whew I’m failing hard at that):
When watching on the MyCloud server, I’ll often have an issue where the “tooltip” or “pop up” for “Exit Fullscreen” will show up, and then just hang there no matter what I do aside from reloading the page or switching to a different server. If I exit fullscreen mode it goes away, but if I go back to fullscreen it comes right back. Tapping on the captions & settings icons makes it go away while those menus are open, but it comes right back when they close. I’ve tried everything I can think of, no dice. Suggestions are welcome though!
Here’s an example - https://imgur.com/a/tmKhIqi - it’s probably a little tough to see, but it’s in the bottom right, where the button to “Exit Fullscreen” would be.
Maybe it’s just OCD or something but it’s distracting as hell. When I’m trying to pay attention to what’s onscreen, my eyes keep getting dragged down to that white box... ugh, what a pain!
Here’s my setup:
iOS (all recent versions including current update) iPhone 6S & iPad Air 2 Safari browser AdGuard Pro with basic filters plus Sorrow-San’s custom filter (also exists with AdGuard free edition, with various filters disabled, and when no blocker is enabled)
This occurs on other sites using MyCloud, but it does not occur on other streaming systems (such as Rapidshare) that I’m aware of. Not all sites let you know which server you’re using or even give you options - that’s one of the great things about 9anime!
So again, I’d just like to stress that I know this isn’t a site issue, and that it’s an extremely minor annoyance. I was just kind of hoping someone else had encountered it and found a quick and easy solution, and I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask.
That’s about it. If anyone has any advice or a solution let me know, if you’ve experienced the same thing post your setup and maybe we can figure out if there’s a common thread, and that might lead to an answer.
Thanks for humoring me, and thanks in advance for any help I may receive. I really appreciate your help and patience. Once again, sorry for posting something which is so off-topic.

2019.05.20 06:12 throwaway-aa2 Private trackers vs Usenet: a honest take from a user learning and getting into Usenet (for 14 hours straight).

"Why use Usenet over Private Trackers"? This was my question.
I recently decided to move from a VPS setup, with a seedbox using private trackers, to a dedicated server... still using a seedbox with private trackers. I've been happy with the setup.
However... it became very clear, through my reading of many posts, and talking on Discourse on various communities, that there was a LOUD and vocal fanbase of usenet. I won't get into the pros as you've heard them all.
Quick context on me: I used usenet a decade ago. This was when rapidshare existed, and most people's daily drivers were Windows, not Mac / Linux. It was a horrible experience.. slow internet connection, and downloading some 60 part file, just for one of them to either be corrupted, or get a takedown right in the middle of you doing shit.
5 years ago I got into private trackers. It was an absolute pain in the ass getting in... but now that I'm firmly in... things are nice! I never even considered going back. But from what I heard today, Usenet was still pretty popular, and that there was a lot of software that automates the nastiness away.
So I've been up since 10:00 am (and it's 12am now), setting up my server, learning what indexes are, what providers are, a lot of the common clients & services, learning about the different backbones, and getting the right mixture of multiple indexes and multiple providers, takedowns (dmca vs ntd), and setup nzbget, sonarr, hydra, and started downloading some files.
Reading through all the posts, there are 3 camps: the camp for private trackers, the camp for usenet, and the camp for both. Rather than talk about the positives of each camp (which they've already done themselves) I thought I'd provide a different perspective, and talk about what each camp doesn't readily get.

Private tracker camp

Usenet camp

Use both camp

I still am of the mind that Usenet is definitely valuable to a large portion of the public, and definitely more immediately transparent and easier to get into than private trackers. I just want the debate on these topics to be more transparent, to inform users as myself.

Shout out to Cloudbox on Discord for all the amazing help and discussion in terms of configuring my server, but also helping understand usenet more.

2019.03.12 20:36 Janupedia Difference between the Scene and p2p?

This is NOT my post and I found it browsing the internet. However, it's still contains some relevant points.

RELEASE GROUPS - These groups are sometimes run by few people and sometimes by just an individual person. But not all of these groups release on torrents. Some of these groups hate torrents and anything to do with peer to peer. This is where the real secret trading goes on.

There are two types of Release Groups:

P2P GROUPS (Peer-to-Peer Groups) - PRiSM, FLAWL3SS, ViSION, IMAGINE, Noir, etc are all P2P groups. They release warez/torrents directly to P2P sites such as Public/Private Torrent sites, LimeWire, Frostwire, or some to direct download sites liike Rapid:shit:, etc.

SCENE GROUPS - Diamond, Reloaded, Razor1911, etc are all 'Scene' groups. The Scene has no central leadership, location, or other conventional distinguishing marks of existence, but some general guidelines apply globally, considering the historical usage of the term and the history of the communities the term has been used to represent. These guidelines include a rigid set of rules ["Scene Release Standards"] that groups must follow in releasing pirated stuff. These groups "hate" torrents, usenet, rapidshare and all other peer to peer programs such as limewire etc..because such programs expose your ips to the public and other anti-piracy organizations and is a big risk for them to expose their members. By not releasing stuff via this method they maintain longevity and secretiveness and a constant supply of warez.

So then you ask so how come all their stuff is reaching the torrents?

This is where the next set of releasers come in.

TOP SITES/FTP SITES - FTP servers connected to high speed lines minimum 100Mbit to 1Gbit to multi-Gbit. FTP is another way of transferring stuff but much secure as it uses SSL encryption so it is very very hard to snoop around an FTP server.

Every FTP site has certain sections on the wish of its owner who owns the servers (eg. TV-XVID, TV-X264, DVDR, XVID, X264, APPS, GAMES, XBOX360, WII). These are basically the most important sections but other FTP sites could have foreign sections such as French, Spanish, German, Italian etc depending on the FTP owners nationality and his needs. Each section has its own rules such as :

TV-XVID --- All US Scripted TV shows only...

WII - Only PAL Games allowed (if the owner is European)

. . . and so on and so forth for other sections. Every one has different rules and racers have to adhere to every FTP sites rule.

COURIERS - a.k.a. "Racers" or "Traders" are the ones responsible for the trading of warez between FTP sites.

When a courier races/trades, he earns credits set according to a certain ratio. For example if the owner of the ftp site sets all racers ratio to 1:4; and say there are 2 racers who race Iron.Man.2.DVDRip.XviD-Diamond to the ftp site. Say "racer1" uploaded 400MB of iron man 2 and "racer2" uploaded 300MB of iron man 2 for a combined total of 700MB.

Then according to the ratio 1:4 "racer1" gets 400MB x 4 = 1600MB credits and "racer2" gets 300MBx4 =1200MB credits to his account. (MB = Megabyte). Say now the owner doesn't like Iron man 2 and nukes both racers 3X. That means "racer1" will lose 400 x 3 = 1200GB credits from his account and "racer2" will lose 300 x 3 = 900MB credits. When u lose credits and don't have enough a FTP site will delete you as you are of no good.

That's why Scene releases have good quality torrents always because they maintain rules written by owners of various groups and approved by other groups to be a certain standard. ["Scene Release Standards"]

Such as Rules for XviD movies: ["Scene XviD Release Standards"] All xvid movies have to be 700MB 1 CD or 2 CD rip of 1.37GB with certain RIP settings. If "scene" groups don't follow these rules they will get "nuked" It's like a university degree, you don't want to have 10 failed courses, then you are not looked as a smart student. Similarly, a group doesn't want too many nukes besides its name. It destroys their reputation and doesn't let them get on good FTP sites.

When they Release something on a FTP site it is known as to "pred" or a "pre". "Pre" means the release is ready to be raced to other FTP sites NOT "torrent sites". Remember all scene groups hate torrents and do not want ANY of their stuff on torrent sites. If they see someone on their FTP sites releasing stuff on torrents, his ip gets banned and he gets NFOed sending a warning to other FTP sites to 'Delete' & 'Purge' him and never to allow him anywhere near Scene ever again.

Now you ask, well if the Scene groups hate torrent sites so much, how come uploaders are able to release so much stuff from these FTP sites?

Because a few uploaders hide their identity and don't say that they are releasing on torrent sites. Some FTP sites ask for money secretly from p2p uploaders to let them upload to torrent sites. These FTP sites take a risk that if they get busted by other Scene groups their ftp site will be NFOed and will be shut down and the owner of that FTP site will be considered supporting "p2p" or "torrents" forever and he forever will be banned from Scene. Uploaders have to be very careful in hiding their information so that they don't get caught!

"P2P" SITES - these are P2P file sharing sites (LimeWire, Frostwire, Rapid:shit:, etc), torrent sites (private/public trackers), etc. These are sites where uploaded torrents/warez from release groups go.

UPLOADERS - are ones responsible for uploading torrents to "leechers".

LEECHERS - are ones downloading the torrents.

In Summary, a release gets "pred" by "Scene" groups such as Diamond, reloaded, razor1911, lol, etc on "FTP" sites and then those releases get traded to other ftp sites from where on few uploaders who hide their identities..upload it to torrents. An UPLOADER has nothing to do with the release itself. He is just a messenger. Some uploaders even employ "Bots": Custom-made Scripts/Programs designed to download Scene releases via FTP and upload to their torrent tracker automatically for very fast and usually reliable pre-times. THUS DO NOT blame the uploader for why a Scene release is rar'd or doesn't have screens or even if it's a faulty Scene release, as it is the Scene group's fault if their release is not up to the mark. Always respect this knowledge, never go around mailing the Scene groups (which sometimes post contact info in their nfos) if you are a torrent user. That brings unnecessary attention and reveals your lack of knowledge and puts the Uploader as well as the torrent site itself at risk.

Not sure where this originated but this has to be one of the better explanations like this I've ever seen. I made just a few edits, mostly just grammar and such I saw, but this is largely just the way I found it. Hope others enjoy reading it it as much as I did.

I can think of a few things I could add to it. Unlike most of what's above which is how it's been for a long time and probably will be for a long time in the future, most of what I would add would be more in how things are today and the recent past and who knows how much they might change from these recent trends over the next year, couple years, etc. If you're still interested read on ...

Movie releases & Scene & P2P sources:

P2P groups like IMAGiNE (and some of the foreign p2p release groups that they quite often use for Cam & R5 sources, like the Russian p2p groups ELEKTRI4KA, RelizLab, etc) have been pwning Scene in pre-retail releases - Cam, Telesync (TS), R5, Screener, PPV etc - for the last several years now, both in how early they get them out and in quality.

Scene movie groups have always dominated the retail releases though. Typically the first Blu-ray (x264, XviD) or DVD sourced (XviD, DVDR) releases of every film will pre from a Scene group a week to a month or more sometimes before the retail release date, well before most any P2P group gets their hands on them. That's not always the case though, as some of the well-known So/Central American and Chinese P2P groups often get their releases out early too, but by and large Scene still owns retail. That's why most of the P2P XviD and BRRip tagged releases are encodes from Scene DVDR & x264 release sources.

Scene Release Standards - NUKEs - NUKENETs - REPACKs - PROPERs:

It's not a one-way street though that P2P relies on Scene sources, although it's supposed to be. Scene groups must abide by strict release Standards that forbid ever using P2P sources, but they don't always comply with them exactly and some try to see what they can get away with. Though they aren't supposed to, it's not all that rare for a Scene group to grab a pre-retail or retail P2P source and try to use it for their Scene release. Sometimes they get caught doing so and their releases will get NUKED for 'stolen.from.p2p' or similar by one or more of the NUKENETS - groups that try to monitor and enforce Scene Release Standards and themselves are supposed to follow "NukeCouncil" rules. Some of the current Nukenets are ...

SheepNet - LocalNet - oneNET - Nuclear - ZoNeNET - FRENCHNET
Gotmilk - preDB - DutchNET - CentralNET - IT-NET - Lyslogen

Part of the reason for Scene groups to steal from P2P sources or make other stupid errors resulting in a NUKE is Scene is a race between groups to see who can get their release out first. Scene Release Standards for each category (XviD, x264, DVDR, TV, GAMES, etc) only allow ONE scene release of each title. For example, once one Scene group puts out an XviD release, unless it was found to not have complied with the Scene XviD Release Standards in some way, no other group is allowed to release an XviD of that film title or else it will get NUKED for being a 'dupe'. The 'pre' when a Scene group puts out a release is an announcement on a private irc channel that coincides with their release being upped to the Topsite. Groups are supposed to check those pre channels first to see if a release of that title has already been made before releasing. There are also a few for the most part notoriously unreliable and often short-lived html sites that are scripted to follow pre irc channels, many of which are not private, commonly called 'dupecheck' sites, where most anyone can go to see what new Scene releases have pre'd, and often if any NUKEs have been issued against them.

If a Scene release is found to not comply with Scene rules, then that group will need to fix what was wrong with it either by pre'ing a FIX if possible or else they'll have to re-release the entire thing over again tagged as a REPACK before some other Scene group can beat them to it by pre'ing a PROPER. Scene groups really do not like to get PROPER'd by another group, and you can tell from reading their nfos that the groups releasing the PROPER often take great pleasure in being able to do so. A PROPER is kind of a 'You guys suck!' 'do it right & we wouldn't have to fix your :shit:' & 'in your face' kind of thing.

P2P Movie Releases - Sources:

P2P groups, on the other hand, have no such rules, so can't get NUKED nor have any PROPERs, though occasionally you may see a P2P release tagged as a 'PROPER' anyway, apparently in a lame attempt to denote they think their release is somehow better than others out for some reason, but all it really means is they're a n00b group who don't realize what the tag is supposed to mean and they're just trying to get people to download their version instead of everyone else's. P2P has no 'dupe' rules so virtually every well-known P2P group will put out their own version of virtually every popular film. That's why, what we'll typically see for movies, is a Scene XviD DVDRip or BDRip release, followed shortly thereafter by the Scene DVDR or 720p & 1080p x264 releases, and then beginning within hours and lasting for a few days or more torrent sites will then be flooded with every P2P group's DVDRip or BRRip of that same film that they encoded using that same (usually Scene) retail source, so in that case for retail releases by-and-large the chart above would really wind up looking something more like this ...

XviDs:

You may have noticed how Scene XviDs are typically somewhat limited in quality compared to P2P group releases, as Scene release XviDs have always so far had a max allowed width resolution of 640 pixels and are required to be CD-sized (700mb) files, split to multiple CDs if the film is too long to fit onto one. This is because Scene XviD Release Standards are such to make their releases have the maximum possible playback compatibility, mostly for the widely varying limitations/capabilities of DivX players (DVD players that can play AVI files), some of which cannot play files of larger resolutions or file sizes. It's not rare in torrent comments to see n00bs complaining about the smaller res's, split CD-sizes of Scene XviDs (just like n00bs often complain about Scene releases being rar archived), saying these are somehow 'outdated' Scene rules when really nothing could be further from the truth. Though they continue to slip a bit in popularity to the newer HD x264 release format, Scene's 700mb AVI files still are by far the most popular size/format of movie release on torrent sites, and that near-universal DivX player compatibility is largely why, combined with it being what so many still find is a suitable balance/tradeoff between file size and quality. Some P2P releasers like the infamous aXXo knew that all too well and capitalized big-time on putting out Scene-sized rips which made him several times more popular than any other P2P group has ever been.

Not all P2P groups try to mimic Scene releases though. Because P2P has no such rules their XviD releases tend to come in widely varying resolutions and file sizes however they felt was best to release them. Though they tend to not to get as popular it's not hard to find a 480p (720x***) XviD DVDRip from some of the better P2P groups, usually a single file in the 1.4GB range with the 6ch AC3 audio straight from the DVD, in a quality that Scene XviDs will never touch.

Scene nfos vs P2P torrent descriptions:

P2P groups also tend to have a lot more informative nfos &/or torrent descriptions that usually come with screenshots and such that tend to make it much more easy to compare and tell what it is your getting than with Scene releases. Scene releases nfos may have some pretty cool old-school ascii designs but tend to give only the most basic info about the release and never include links to screens. It's not rare to see some n00b in the comments on a Scene release, who has evidently been spoiled by P2P releases and doesn't know the difference between them, complaining that the uploader didn't include screenshots, which as mentioned above was often uploaded by a BOT, not a person - or even if it is a person upping a Scene release +99.9% they're doing so via remote access on a seedbox where they aren't able to extract, play, and make screenshots before uploading anyway. Many uploaders to torrent sites will strip the extra ascii characters from Scene nfos before posting just the text as a torrent description, and if you ever see any screenshots posted for a Scene film or HDTV release on a torrent site it's only because some really nice person (uploader, site staff, or any member in the comments) added them only after they had a chance to download at least some of it first.

Other categories:

With x264 releases Scene and P2P typically run neck-and-neck quality-wise with Scene still having the advantage of usually getting their releases out first and Scene typically dominates other categories like HDTV releases and Warez (applications) & Games where not only are they out front but people have come to trust Scene release Games & Apps more than many would P2P group releases for reliability and to be free from malware. Scene doesn't have anywhere near as much P2P competition in other categories like they do in Movies.

2014.03.20 06:03 stcredzero Help me break my MMORPDJ Grid Engine (Raiders of the Computronium Sphere)

MMORPDJ = Massively Multiplayer Online Rogue-ish Procedural Death Jam.
It's not much more than a movement engine with moving monsters. No combat system yet.
So, I think I'm down to one last bug, and I have the exception handling right where I want it. However, this is a Heisenbug, and the fact of the exception handling statement actually affects the lazy evaluation, so it becomes harder to trigger the bug. I already have about several dozen bots in browsers on my machine in the thing bashing it, but it's not doing it this time. (It's different, as I suspect there's some network coordination between browser instances, so people bashing across the network from different machines entirely should help.)
I'd like your help. If would like to, please hop onto my server at: http://raidsphere.com (look carefully, it's NOT RAPIDSHARE!) and bash my server by running around in it, I suspect it might help. And, if you appreciate minimalist puzzles, try to go as far "down" as you can.
Remember, freezing my server means: We all win!
(And thanks in advance!)
EDIT: Wow, that was quick! Thanks, Internet!

2014.01.11 21:34 Icanhazcomment Introducing "Leech sites" : Download any match from Rojadirecta without any time or speed limit

First of all sorry that I don't post here anymore. My ISP has put me under the microscope for all the piracy stuff I do online however currently I am in traveling in Italy and stuck in a hotel due to the floods so thought I should write this guide to bring the advantage of rojadirecta back to this sub.

What is a leech site

A leech website is a website script hosted on a server with extremely fast bandwidth. Users can send the server links to file hosting websites like :
  • uploaded
  • Novafile
  • Filefactory
  • Depositfiles
  • Bitshare
  • Letitbit
  • Extabit
  • Rapidshare
  • + all other similar sites
basically all the sites which we post under "direct links" here. The server then converts the link into a direct link which allows you to download your file without any speed or time restriction.

How it works

You go an input the link of the file you want. The server then either works in one of two ways.
1) It downloads the file using a premium account it has in it's database to download the file to the server and then provides you link for 3-4 hours to snatch that file. This process usually takes 10 seconds.
2) It converts the link into a "premium member" link so that you can download the file as a premium member. This is not that common.

Advantages of leech sites

  • Fastest way to download matches as direct links are the first to pop up after a match ends.
  • Download speed will be your maximum download speed mostly.
  • Pause and resume downloads at will until the file stays on the server.
  • Remote upload to your cloud drive. Just submit the link to your favorite cloud drive if they support the "remote upload" option. They will then download the file off the server and it will be stored for you on your favorite cloud site forever.
  • Remote upload the match to video sites like "allmyvideos.net" which will download the file directly to their server and you can share the match as a video without wasting any of your own bandwidth. This is how footballdownload-bot used to work but the leech server it was relying on disappeared.

Disadvantages

  • Leech sites are very unreliable. You should have multiple because they come and go fairly often.
  • They might shut down without any notice.
  • You will have to disable adblockers on a lot of them to function.

List of leech sites currently working (please submit more if you have them)

Use this link to test these sites : http://ul.to/rbsnzoqf
1) http://www.bigspeeds.com
2) http://www.exrapidleech.info
3) http://s1.hubturkey.net/
4) http://s3.hubturkey.net/
  • for this above two sites once the link is generated click on it, then wait a couple of seconds and click "skip ad" and the download will start. The ad is what keeps them running.
5) http://vinaget.us/rs/
  • above link rapidshare only
6)
These links will be updated when I remember more sites or find more.

How to use

It is basically the same formula in all of them. Copy the download link off of rojadirecta which will read something like "uploaded.net/file/1321" and post it in the first box of the leech site. Below that box will be an option saying "transload link". Click that and the process will begin. If you get an error try using a different file host or a different leech site as they often bug out. This is why you should have multiple.
On the left side of each website it will show what websites it supports in the list of "premium accounts"
  • Do not download anything else from these sites apart from your file. Those are all ads.
  • On most of them you have to wait a couple of seconds and click "skip ad"

2013.08.15 19:21 ScytherBlade Youtube Channel Archiving Matches

Hello, I created a youtube channel that will commonly post replays of Soccer matches. The channel that they are posted on has all videos unlisted so they hopefully will not be taken down. Meaning please do not share any of the links I post.
Why I created this channel:
Although majority of matches posted will be available will also be found on this subreddit, if any of you are like me and would want to watch matches on the go on your phone, you will know Dailymotion sucks on mobile and that you probably can't download matches to your phone as you probably don't have 2 gb of free space to use on a soccer game. So I created this for personal use, and figured I would share it.
I also created it so we will have these matches saved for a long time. As you know, sites the RapidShare remove files after 60 days of the file not being downloaded. Because Youtube never removes videos due to how long it's been on there servers, as long as they have not been found by FIFA and copyright claimed, they will be there forever. Many World Cup matches that have been posted on RojaDirect are now lost and it's near impossible to find a replay of. This is the closest to having them archived as I can get, otehr than saving them all on to my hard drive which would be expensive.
What matches will be posted
As this is more of a personal project, I will post matches that usually interest me. Meaning:
-All Liverpool Matches
-Majority of EPL Matches
-La Liga teams (Sometimes) : Barcelona, Real Madrid
-Bundesliga Teams (Sometimes) : Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund
-Serie A Teams (Sometimes) : Juventes, AC Milan, Inter Milan
-MLS Games : Usually DC United
-US and English National teams, along with other international games I am interested in.
-All World Cup 2014 Matches
-Tournament Finals
-Other sporadic games that interest me

2013.05.31 14:18 PolloMagnifico The Flying Tech pt 4 - Targeted by a Hacker

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Flying Tech 4: A New Hope
It is a period of civil war. A rebel technician, striking from his tiny store, has won his first victory against the evil Worst Purchase.
During the battle, our intrepid hero managed to obtain an outdated HDD for his secret weapon - an old firewall, with enough power to protect an entire network.
Yelled at by an unskilled technician, he raced back to his store in his car, custodian of the hardware that would eventually bring freedom to his entire career...
Check It!
Act I: Our Hero Returns...
I returned to my store with the device cradled in my arms like a newborn child and hand it off to KungFu Manager. "Many Bothans died to bring you this HDD."
My manager turned to face me. "PolloMagnifico... come sit down."
My heart leapt into my throat. As I have mentioned before, KungFu Manager and I were on pretty friendly terms. Even then, he was still my boss, and I was still his employee. We had an unspoken agreement that, when it was necessary, we would shift back into that relationship, deal with the official business that needed to be dealt with, and shift right back into our friendship with no hurt feelings. I had been "spoken to" on several different occasions at the behest of the company owner. It always started out with him asking me to come sit down. This would not be good.
"So, I talked to the boss about your raise..."
So far so good.
"And he said that if you're going to get a raise, then you need to start doing a little more. I talked him into adding you to my contract."
Wait... what?
"So tomorrow, I want you to show up to at the DreamKiller Offices and help me install this firewall, and meet some of the people."
This... this is finally happening!
Act II: FBI's most wanted
Business slowly began to improve. The store (which was being funded by the parent company) was on the verge of turning a profit for the first time. Many of the new customers were former NerdPatrol customers, who through word of mouth or sheer dumb luck had found their way to our door. I had been given an admin account, some training for exchange and active directory, and a crash course on the network topography for the three DreamKiller offices. I was officially doing helpdesk! And it... was boring.
While yes, technically, I was doing helpdesk now, I was not given enough access to the important things. Things like the PBX server. Or the inventory. Or the firewall. Or really anything except active directory and exchange. So my abilities were basically limited to password resets, account creation, and escalation. Doesn't matter, had tech!
Enter the rich kid. His parent's were doctors. He was probably 18 or 19, and was the poster child for every nerd who still lives with his parents. Quiet, stuttering, lanky, pizza faced. He puts his "very expensive" custom made computer up on the desk and tells me he's got a problem. This is the story according to him.
He was spending his day doing the normal manchild computer thing, when he decided he wanted to hack into some low-security systems. He said he does this "all the time" but THIS time, he got caught. The FBI hacked him back and installed a virus on his computer, demanding he pay a fine within 48 hours or they would come knocking on his door. Remember this particular story, it's relevant for the entirety of the rest of this recollection.
I inform the kid that no, that's not what happened. I don't even need to boot up the system to know that the FBI would not demand you pay a fine for hacking. They would come to your door and kindly escort you to the nearest holding facility, where you would be given three hots and a cot until someone paid your bail. So I boot up the system, and confirm that the kid does in fact have a virus claiming to be an FBI virus and demanding he pay a fine of $100. The virus comes complete with an official FBI watermark, and even has a place ready to input the credit card number.
I tell the kid that I can get the virus off for our usual fee, which is more than the cost of the "fine". Kid doesn't want it, he would rather pay the fine! I inform him that it's just a regular virus, and if he puts his credit card in there he's going to wind up with 98 additional problems (and a bitch still won't be one!).
Finally he relents and I remove the virus. When he comes back in the next day, I give him my normal talk about being careful where you go on the internet, this is your new antivirus, and other general safety tips. But when I mention downloads, he dismissively says "I never download anything".
Dude. You have complete manga scans downloaded and saved in a file on your desktop. Don't BS me. But whatever. I send him on his way.
Act III: Again dude? Really?
Time clicks forward another month. I've settled into my role as helpdesk, and have even learned a few tricks to keep from escalating everything. Kid returns with another virus. I clear it off for him, and when I'm done, we have a short discussion about some of the games I saw on his desktop that I had recently been working my way through as well. That leads to this gem.
"Hey, since you've got it, do you know why I can't play graphics intensive game at full graphics?"
I hook up the computer, and get into the hardware manager.
I inform him, nicely, that he has a pretty shitty computer and the graphics card isn't very good either. His response is that the computer was "very expensive and new" and actually had a pretty good graphics card in it!
Nicely, again, I tell him that my computer at home (which cost me ~700 to build) was at least twice as powerful as his and it still had problems hitting max graphics for this particular game. But but but I have six gigs of memory! Yeah, but you have a dual core processor and a discount graphics card. Seriously, I don't even think they make this anymore. Once again, kid leaves.
Act IV: The third times the charm
Now we're getting to the good part. Flash forward another half a month. Things are going quite well now, until this kid walks into my door. I nod to KungFu Manager. "There's the guy that keeps calling, asking questions that don't make any sense. Why don't you go deal with him?"
KungFu Manager Obliges. I sit outside the door and listen. The first thing the kid says is "I think someone is hacking me."
KungFu Manager stammers for a second, and finally responds "what?"
"I keep getting viruses even though I never download things. I think I'm being targeted by a hacker who keeps putting viruses on my computer!"
KungFu Manager calmly explains to him that it's not extremely likely that he's being targeted by a hacker, as it doesn't fit with a typical hacker MO. But regardless, he would be happy to take a look at it. Oh, and viruses (again). KungFu Manager takes it in, we remove the viruses, and he goes over the firewall looking for open ports and a few other things (he's far better at security than I am) and can't find anything to indicate a problem. While we're doing this, I'm telling him about the previous two times the kid had been in, and how you would think someone who supposedly hacks well enough for the FBI to take notice would know how to keep his system secure. We decide to have a little fun with him.
We hold his computer for a little over a week. When he comes to pick up his system, we look him dead in the eye and say the following:
"We found some very interesting things on your computer. You had several open ports, and your local DHCP was configured to reroute all of your internet queries to a server in china through a network of proxies. It was very hard to trace, so we called in an FBI computer forensics specialist to help us. He did some digging, and found an extremely sophisticated virus that had infected your BIOS, which is why the format didn't get rid of it. He traced it back to a known server exclusively utilized by the Chinese military for spying on American systems. He believes that you were originally a primary node in a chain of proxies used in a recent attack on the pentagon. Your computer was confiscated as evidence in an ongoing investigation into that particular attack, and he wanted us to thank you for being a good American Citizen."
Kid was absolutely devastated. He looked at us like he was about to cry and said "Really?"
We place his computer on top of the counter.
"No, we didn't find anything wrong with your computer aside from the virus. Here's a list of places that we know are clean to get your manga from instead of using rapidshare. If you're really worried about being hacked, call your ISP and ask them to change your external IP address. Have a nice day."
"... what's an IP address?"
facepalm
TL;DR Had fun at some poor kids expense because he lived in a fantasy world where he was an elite black hat hacker. Kid doesn't know what an IP address is.

2011.09.13 20:03 STMYS A Guide to Getting Away With It

Dear Freshman Fucks, and the like.
As a senior destined to graduate shortly, I felt it pertinent to share some of the tips and tricks that I have learned over these years as a college student. I lived in the dorms for over 3 years, and learned a few things about not giving a fuck, and not getting in too much trouble.
DRINKING
where to get some
So, you wanna get your drink on do you? Unfortunately as this is a bit of a public forum, I can't straight up give away the liquor stores that don't card, and most of them do. BUT! If you get a decent enough fake, (research ISIC), then some places will just serve you. Some bars downtown will serve you if you seem like you belong. Afternoon hours, or before 7pm is your best bet to get a beer. But, remember, don't be some nervous asshole otherwise it will never work. Ask one of your European friends how is done in a country without arbitrary laws that only serve to cause more problems.
Of course, you can always ask an upperclassman, your brother, your bother's friend, or that asshole that charges you $5 bucks (me), to fetch you some shit. Mr. Boston Vodka is dirt cheap and gets you drunk like a skunk. Despite what Mythbusters might tell you, it actually does make a difference to pour it through a Brita filter, turning your bottom shelf vodka into midshelf. I recommend mixing it with those awesome Nantucket Nectars from The Max, gotta put those BoardBucks to some sort of use.
Off Campus parties is also a way to some shitty Natty Light or PBR, but avoid the Allston thing. Every party in Allston is a guaranteed shit show. If the police do show up, don't fucking freak out. They don't give a shit about you. Just put away your weed and walk out the front door. Alright bub?
SMOKING WEED
Yes you can smoke in the dorms, you probably shouldn't, but you totally can. Use the room furthest away from the door. Make sure the front door is locked. Make a sploof (look it up). Towel the door. And don't smoke in the shower, the vent often connects to the hallway so you just end up stinking up your floor.
Always have a window open, cover the firearm with a baggy (but don't forget to take it off, that's a $100 fine if they catch you, and if they do catch you, it was for cigarettes).
Or, you can not wreck yourself and go outside to the Common like every other fuck does.
Also buying weed at Emerson is easier than fucking a gay guy. That is, everybody knows somebody or is somebody who sells. Are you some goddamn freshman? Find a Junior or Senior that somehow is willing to talk to you and they will know somebody who sells.
Prices are generally as follows:
This is what you should be paying for Headies, the good shit. Middies should be cheaper. Other drugs are also available, but harder to find.
RA'S
So your suckling down on a bong and you hear a knock at the door. Your blasting away 'Ghost N' Stuff' shouting that you love dustup and chugging Wild Turkey and the RA is at your door. What to do?
  1. don't fucking freak out
  2. DON'T FREAK OUT!
  3. keep them music going
  4. clean up your evidence, stash that bong, hide ALL evidence of acohol in drawers, fridges and cabinets. Shot glasses, beer cans, bottle caps, anything that they can use. Clear it all the fuck up.
  5. let them knock and knock and knock until it is all cleared away.
  6. If you were smoking weed in one room, close that door, and move to another room to hang out.
  7. then turn off the music
  8. let them knock again
  9. feign ignorance "oh sounds like someone is at the door"
here is what you should say
RA: Hello, yes. We heard a lot of noise coming from here and we need to ask you to turn it down.
YOU: of course.
RA: also, we heard some clinking of bottles. Would you mind if we took a look?
YOU: Go ahead.
They'll step inside, if nothing stands out, THEY WILL LEAVE! RA'S (mostly) hate busting kids, they don't think drinking is wrong, and they are just following orders like some other people we know. They're slaves to a fucked up system in trade of free housing. Remember, these are people who have surrendered some aspect of their morals for a cheeping living space, so when they can avoid acting upon their supposed evil intent, they will.
RA: Why is this door locked? Can we look inside?
YOU: That's not my room.
RA: Who lives here?
YOU: Bob does, he's not here.
RA: It smells a little weedy in here. Were you getting high?
YOU: No
RA: Are you sure?
YOU: Yes.
ALWAYS LIE! well, almost always. For weed, they need to find it before they can do anything. So even if your eyes are red, your blazed off your skull, unless they find some fucking evidence, they have nothing on you.
Lying is generally a good idea when faced with a illogical system. If you can fool them by not telling the truth, then do so. Sometimes you can appeal to their logic or reason, but this is rarely the case. Pretend you weren't doing anything wrong, even if you were, and even if they know you were, and most of the time, you'll get away with it.
Also, if you do get busted, fined and they force you to go to CHOICES, you can totally skip that shit. Or go anyway, it's kinda fun and you'll meet some new drinking buddies, like the kids who run it.
Next, I'll explain how to download a ton of music and movies and not get busted for P2P filesharing. Also where to fuck if you have roommate in your room.
UPDATE: *WHERE TO FUCK THAT HOT GUY/GIRL (BOTH) EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE A ROOMMATE *
So, this kinda only works if you have somebody who you've already fucked, or is cool fucking at an arranged location. This isn't the best for seducing someone. The solution is quite simple.
Common Rooms. Yes! Now, what you do is you simply take one of those door wedges with you, find an empty common room, wedge the door and have at it. Now if you find this not to enough privacy, the bathrooms inside the common rooms are often very large and clean.
Now if some loser is studying or playing mario kart in each common room, and nothing is available, there is always the Piano Row handicapped stall in the lobby. There is so much room for activities there, and since almost nobody ever uses those, it's often cleaner than your bed anyway. Besides, you get paper towels to wipe up any mess. If your on the down-low you can arrange to meet someone there and have a little secret knock. It was great fun pretending I needed to study and then go blow a load into this closet case and then get back with nobody being the wiser.
HOW TO DOWNLOAD MOVIES/GAMES/SOFTWARE and not get BUSTED
First of all, use your ethernet. Not because it's safer, but because Emerson's ethernet is wicked fast. For some reason the fastest seems to be in The Ansin building, but anywhere should really do.
Secondly, don't torrent. Torrents are what get students busted, and considering the new legislation colleges and universities are now legally required to assist the RIAA, MPAA and the such with busting kids. Besides the fact that everybody I know, myself included, who downloads a crazy amount of media also watches, listens and pays for a crazy amount of media, bla bla bla whatever.
What to do? Use FTP, USENET, or RAPIDSHARE/MEGAUPLOAD/FILESHARE type service. Yes, this will cost you some money. I pay about $10 a month, or a $100 a year to access a USENET server which allows me to download Breaking Bad the very fucking minute it is done airing.
How do you use Usenet? You have a mac, that's a given. So first things first (I eat your brains), download http://sabnzbd.org/ (also works for pc), this is downloader, it works straight from your browser. It's very easy to use and most of the instructions are on the website.
I use the Supernews servers since they are reliable and fast and allow unlimited amount of connections. Here is a link to a promo they have http://www.supernews.com/super-special/
To find files to download you can use binsearch.info or nzbmatrix.com (although that one requires a payment to get older files).
For the megaupload fileshares type deals, you pay for access to their servers and can find files on filestube.com
It's all about downloading, and not uploading. That's what they get you with. When you upload they can claim you have helped spread the file and can fine you for each exchange, that is what allows absurd million dollar fines and the like. Eventually these crusty old cunt judges will die off and copyright will be rewritten, but until then, be safe.
Requests for more or other information will be noticed.

2011.05.20 19:18 Rand0mNZ I've uploaded the 2004-10 audio archive of the Atheist Experience for anyone here interested.

The ACA doesn't host their shows on their server for long at all and the torrents for them are pretty rare, so I decided to buy the archive and have it sent to me down here in NZ. My shitty 40GB plan took a beating.
Anyway, here it is - all in MP3 format and RARed:
2004
2005
2006
2007
2008
2009
2010
I realise that many people hate Rapidshare, but I've had a premium account with them for years - so it was convenient for me.
The information I got with them said that the files were free to be copied if no profit is being made from doing it, but if anyone from the ACA wants them off it shall be done!

2011.01.25 08:08 ThrowawayPUA Gunwich - The Way of Gun

Due to crazy recent news events, there has been some curiosity about Gunwich's materials. He took down his web server and none of his materials are available for free, as they were before.
But I stumbled across his audio course on a private tracker I know of, and I also had saved the front pages of his site when it was up briefly last month. I only captured about half of the original texts, the others seem to be gone permanently. But what web pages I did recover, I stored as PDFs. So here you go:
The Gunwich Method (texts, 280k PDFs)

2010.02.02 19:33 ReformedDistributor I ran the one of the first large-scale HTTP game piracy networks. AMAA.

First, I would like to say, that despite that I have now reformed and am not involved in any piracy, I do not want to reveal any details about the sites I ran. However, if a moderator would like proof that I am who I say I am, I'll happily provide it.
I ran a huge piracy network for games. This was before the days of Rapidshare or the mainstream availability of torrents. The sites effectively were simply a front for a worldwide distribution network of donated server space. At the time, piracy of games (particularly older games) was of dubious legality. No one had actually ever been prosecuted for either distributing them or downloading them that my team knew of, so we thought it was fine and accepted by the industry. Similarly, the term 'piracy' was effectively unheard of. The sites themselves were for a period of about 2 years the biggest distribution network of ROMs for Nintendo consoles ranging from the NES through to the Gameboy. The sites were all shut down due to the threat of legal action.
I made no money during the operation of the sites, but I did make a small sum of money following them being shut down, by selling PHP scripts to early anti-piracy companies for analysis. The scripts themselves restricted download speed, gave false addresses for the download location, restricted download amount, and restricted access by IP range. I also attempted to alleviate my conscience by working on and off with a loss prevention department (no dedicated piracy department in those days) of a large games publisher.
Ask me (almost) anything about piracy, about the warez scene, about early adopters of PHP, about the platform, the distribution network, about online anonymity or anything else that will not give away who I am.
