Okay, I say "Rewriting" on the title but I don't think that is the right words?
Basically, there is a folklore in my country titled "Malin Kundang", telling a story about an ungrateful child.
However, I decide to like...write and give some more 'spices' into the story and have it have a crossover with other country folklore.
The question now that I am in the middle of the story', does this classified as Fanfiction? Or as Personal Work? Or anything else entirety? Thank You!!!

2023.06.17 12:19 jadishsa I need critics and suggestions for my personal project of retelling Indonesian Folklore. First story is about Malin Kundang.

Alright, my fellow Komodos, let's dive into the tale of Malin Kundang, shit straight outta the history books. But we're gonna give it a spin, funny and updated style! So buckle up and get ready for a wild ride through family drama and divine comeuppance.
Once upon a time in a humble small village, there was this dude named Malin Kundang. Now, this guy had some serious aspirations. He set sail, leaving his poor momma behind, thinking he was destined for greatness. Ah, the naivety of youth!
Years went by, and our boy Malin struck gold—or rather, struck riches! He climbed the social ladder faster than Awkarin in 2021. He married a fine lady from a wealthy family Jess NoLimit style, and life seemed like a real-life fairy tale. But hey, this is where things start to unravel, folks.
One fine day, Malin and his wife decided to pulang kampung or visit his hometown. He had the big idea of showing off his success and flexing it in the faces of the peasants who once doubted him. But little did he know that Fate had a wicked sense of humor just like Choki Pardede's, and it was about to dish out some epic payback.
As they strolled through the village, a familiar face caught Malin's eye. It was his mother, old and weathered by the hardships of life. Now, you'd think a long-lost son would rush into his momma's arms, right? Wrong! Malin's ego had grown bigger than Deddy Corbuzier's chin, and he was too ashamed to admit his humble origins.
He fucking shunned his mother, denying their bond and leaving her heartbroken. She cried out to the heavens, tears mixing with her despair. In her anguish, she called upon the gods for justice. "Oh, mighty deities," she pleaded, "let Malin face the consequences of his heartlessness!"
And let me tell you, komodos, the gods didn't take this request lightly. They unleashed a curse upon Malin, a curse that would freeze him in his tracks, both physically and metaphorically. As he fell to his knees, begging for forgiveness, his skin turned to stone, and he became a statue—forever trapped in a pose of regret.
There he stood, a monument to his own arrogance, forever begging for mercy at his mother's feet. The villagers would pass by, shaking their heads, and tell the tale of Malin Kundang, the guy who let success go to his head and lost his humanity in the process.
So, my friends, let this be a lesson to us all: never forget your roots, cherish your loved ones, and beware the wrath of a momma scorned. Remember, life has a funny way of teaching us humility, and even the mightiest among us can be turned to stone with a single twist of Fate's fickle finger.

2021.09.10 23:42 thehypotheticalnerd Update on the nonexistent "Kundang, Indonesia" issue for the few people interested (including more geographical errors)

Okay. So... the other day I posted about how "Kundang, Indonesia" is a nonexistent place. For a recap attempting to cover everything, here we go. If you more or less remember the previous post, then skip ahead to "MORE GEOGRAPHICAL ERRORS"
INCORRECT LOCATION
In the level select, each mission is given a basic location name. However, when you load into the mission, the briefing has a more specific name to give you a better idea of where you are. The City and Country are always real while the specific location you're at may be real or fictional (i.e. CIA HQ is real while Kalinatek is fictional, but both are in Langley, Virginia)
In SCPT, that means the level select names are different compared to the briefing name but still have the general idea. The Indonesia levels in particular are important.
In the menu, Kundang is listed as Kundang Camp, Indonesia -- already this is kind of strange as it lists the specific location setting rather than the general one. For instance, it's not "US Embassy, Timor," it's just called Dili, Timor. It's not called "Cryo Labs, France", it's just Paris, France. It's not "LAX, California", it's just Los Angeles, California.
Everyone who believed it to be the camp name is right -- it is the Kundang Camp. Ignoring the strange level select name, there are in-mission references to it being the "Kundang Camp" such as an agency file written by Grim plus objectives calling it that. Great! So problem solved, right?
Not quite. The real problem lays in the location listed in the briefing/debriefing.
Refinery, Kundang, Indonesia
See the issue? In every other location name, including the other Indonesia levels, the name preceding the country is the region or city name (or City, then State, then Country in the case of LAX) yet Kundang is listed in the same way Komodo and Jakarta are, implying the camp and region share the name OR that "the Kundang Camp" is just a generic name for a camp that happens to be set up in the Kundang region. Except... Jakarta and Komodo are real places in Indonesia, and Kundang is not.
If Kundang Camp was just the name of the specific camp, then it should have been written as Kundang Camp, __________, Indonesia based on every other location. So even with figuring out that Kundang is the camp name, that still leaves us with a hole in the location that would better show where in Indonesia it's set. There are a number of islands -- are we western, central, eastern? Who knows!

KUNDANG MEANING
Now, I looked it up and "Malin Kundang" is an actual Indonesian folktale. Wikipedia link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malin_Kundang gives a synopsis of what the story is, but spoiler, it ends with the protagonist cursed and both he and his ship are turned to stone. This article also states:
Air Manis (Sweet Water), a beach near Padang, has a rock formation called Batu Malin Kundang that is said to be the remains of his ship.
There's also a city in Malaysia called Kundang and the two countries are very close in proximity. However, I'll throw the Malaysia idea out as I'm going to assume that at the very least, they didn't mix up two countries but rather just got some details about Indonesia wrong, at worst.
Finally, in the news broadcast just before the mission, a Ticker says: "U.S. TROOPS PULL OUT OF KUPANG, INDONESIA, NO CASUALTIES REPORTED". So there's a chance they simply accidentally confused or swapped Kupang with the name of the folktale that they may have been looking at when coming up with the story or any number of mistakes like that.
______________________________
MORE GEOGRAPHICAL ERRORS
I was initially going to assume they simply confused Kupang with Kundang -- and that it was supposed to be Kundang Camp, Kupang, Indonesia. Then I looked at the debriefing and found yet another, smaller geographical error regarding Indonesia...
Kundang Debriefing
Grimsdottir traced Sadono's "Pandora Tomorrow" phone call through several relay points before losing it it in a shipyard on an island off the eastern coast of Indonesia.
"On an island off the eastern coast of Indonesia." Wait a minute -- *checks a map of Indonesia*. Komodo is like one of the central islands of Indonesia. Almost exactly smack dab in the center. How is it off the "eastern coast" when there are a bunch of Indonesian islands to the east of it? The debrief implies it should be at least one of the eastern most, if not THE eastern most island of Indonesia. For that line to be accurate it would need to have added "Sumbawa," the specific Indonesian island to the west of Komodo. So that way it would say "On an island off the eastern coast of Sumbawa, Indonesia."
It's possible they meant specifically to the east of just Java, Indonesia, which is where the capital of Jakarta is located and according to Wikipedia, it's the most populous island. So it could be considered the "main" part of Indonesia, but the wording is still weird. It'd be like saying "Kansas, a state to the west of the USA..." just because you're marking the USA by Washington D.C. There are still numerous states to the west of Kansas so saying Kansas is to the west of the USA rather than specifying to the west of where in the USA, would be confusing.
As it stands, with the way it's actually written, it implies that wherever Kundang Camp is supposed to be, Komodo is at least east of it. It's certainly east of Jakarta for instance. But Kupang, the location I initially hypothesized the devs may have confused Kundang with, is actually further east than Komodo. If the debrief was rewritten to just say east of Sumbawa, that would allow Kundang to be in Kupang, though that would still just be a random guess based on the circumstantial evidence of it appearing in the news (and the news references other Indonesia locations throughout the game).
The only other option I can think of, based on the Kundang name's connection to the folktale, is placing it somewhere in Sumatra, the island which has Padang and the Air Manis beach where the supposed wreckage from Malin Kundang is, in the West Sumatra province. The island is also right across from Kundang, Malaysia as well, and Komodo is definitely east of Sumatra.
So...
Kundang Camp, Sumatra, Indonesia
Maybe? That's still not as pinpoint accurate as Jakarta (which is a specific city and capital of all of Indonesia) or even Komodo which is a tiny island compared to Sumatra or Sumbawa or many of the other islands so doesn't really need to be more specific, but it at least gives a better idea than Literally-Could-Be-Anywhere, Indonesia.
__________________________
EDIT: ADDITIONAL CONFIRMATION THAT KUNDANG IS SUPPOSED TO BE A REGION
The news reports between the Komodo and Jakarta missions (again, both real places lol), the following is stated directly by Morris O'dell:
Morris Odell: ...whether or not the strategic airstrike in Kundang aimed at Sadono was successful. Military Intelligence will…
And the news reports also have a caption that says "Kundang, Indonesia" just above the news ticker at the bottom of the screen. If it was solely meant to be the camp name, it's strange to say the airstike "in Kundang". I feel like it would, at the very least, need to say "on Kundang." Minor difference, and one often used interchangeably when discussing a general area.
The following are both from the same article on the U.S.'s recent drone strike in Kabul
Ten family members, including children, dead after US strike in Kabul
The vehicle that was targeted by the US in Sunday's airstrike on Kabul
But Kabul is a whole city, not a specific location. You would generally only say "on" for a specific location. Here's a good example from another article about the U.S.'s love of airstrikes:
The U.S. military on Sunday conducted airstrikes on facilities used by Iran-backed militia groups in the Iraq-Syria border region
Someone who's fluent in English wouldn't say "conducted airstrikes in facilities" because it's... not really inside a specific building, whereas an airstrike can be in a general location like the "Iraq-Syria border region" since it's within the borders of a particular area.
Seems to me like someone, JT Petty or one of the developers, just accidentally mixed up Kundang with either Kupang or... something to that effect given they verbally refer to it as such in the news.

2021.09.08 08:58 thehypotheticalnerd Anyone know of ANY location in Indonesia called Kundang?

Generally speaking, the original SC games always use a real city in a real country for their missions. So Tbilisi, Georgia = real. Langley, Virginia, USA = real. Very specific locations within said City, Country can sometimes be real or sometimes fictional. The CIA HQ, for instance, is actually located in Langley... but Kalinatek is a fictional cover company used by Nikoladze that doesn't actually exist. Sometimes, a specific place or city may exist. but their aesthetic is different such as the Chinese Embassy in Yangon, Myanmar.
However, I can't find a "Kundang" in Indonesia -- a region, city, village, district, river, anything --anyone know of one? All I can find are:
Every other location in SCPT is real, including the other Indonesia & nearby locations. Dili, East Timor; Komodo, Indonesia; and Jakarta, Indonesia are all real, so it would be strange for them to have confused Kundang, Malaysia with that of a location in Indonesia, but I guess it's possible.
Another possibility is that the camp itself was merely called Kundang as I suggested above, perhaps in reference to Malin Kundang, but again, I'm not sure.
A third possibility, is that it's supposed to be the similarly named Kupang, Indonesia and for whatever reason, they wrote or used Kundang by accident. The news report just before the mission features a news ticker that reads:
U.S. TROOPS PULL OUT OF KUPANG, INDONESIA, NO CASUALTIES REPORTED
I realize this probably will be of interest to -0.5% of people here, but I was just curious. Any additional info, ideas/hypotheses, etc. would be appreciated! I'm currently in the middle of a pretty extensive project to make my ultimate headcanon of the series, so I'd like to have a more specific, definitive location for the Kundang Camp mission.

2017.03.14 10:20 lalalaidontcare I don't know what to feel.

Before 2010, everything was going fine. Friends, school, nearly everything. Not too much bullies. The golden child, they said. But, parents choose to move to another island (to Java from Borneo), because of my father's pension, without asking my opinion. After we settled down (in Semarang), they tell me it will be good. Nope, it became worse. Bullies everywhere in the elementary, depression mounts itself to me. Still, I am out as the valedictorian of the school.
Then, we move to another town (Jepara), same island. Caused by my mother's corporation. Had to follow them. Got received in the town's favorite middle school. But its student: total mess. I was publicly bullied on the first day of the orientation, got worse after that: was put with the bullies in the same class, and was chosen by them as the chairman. It was a total failure. They were gambling in the class, harassing the teacher, and recording videos of me peeing in the restroom. Most of those who see don't help me. The next year, most of them are in different class. One of them is still with me, and he regularly ditches mathematics class. I told the teacher about that, and the whole class is outraged; one of them-the one who didn't help me from the bullies-told me that I am the evil one, and the next day, I was confronted by the bullies. Screwed.
Then, I start to contemplate suicide and killing spree in my dreams. My mother then promised me to go back to Semarang when I graduate for better school. Thank God, no more cheaply jerks. But then, after all those perfect final results, the promise was lie all along. My father told me that I will be lost there, so nope, no better future. My mother came to me and feel sorry of that. One day before the graduation, I got a new laptop-the one I use to submit this post-from my father. Fucking liars. They forced me to do what they want for their own frickin' good (Does anyone know "Malin Kundang"?).
Finally, here I am, a lonely first year high-school student, whose mind is breaking apart, and literally no one knows about that. I don't know what to feel, I don't know who and what to believe. And I don't want to tell my parents because I'm sure they will disown me (Malin Kundang rhetoric, once again). They just-I don't know. I am literally falling apart. Considering options: move out from my country and leave my family for good, or just straight move to the next plane of life.
Help me. I need someone who can talk to me.

2016.09.28 09:24 psychedelicsexfunk What will Indonesia's 'cerita rakyat' sound like from the perspective of the antagonist(s)?

Was re-reading Malin Kundang and wondered if Malin Kundang actually denounced his mother because she was a narcissist and abusive towards him. I think this makes a poignant story with a more realistic message, as ridiculous as it sounds. So, how would you re-write these 'cerita rakyat'?
