Help with medicine and feeding schedule

2024.05.06 14:50 spirit_of_a_goat Help with medicine and feeding schedule

19 month old neutered male mastiff mix weighs 87 lbs. He was hospitalized for NSAID overdose Saturday and released Sunday. He needs to take these meds:
gabapentin 300mg (1-2 capsules every 8-12 hours as needed for pain or sedation) 500 mg amoxi-clav (2 tablets every 12 hours with food). Here are the instructions for the medications sent home with us.
He is usually fed at 6am and 6pm.
He had his sucralfate at 9pm last night and 5am this morning. Fed at 6am today with 300mg gabapentin and 1000mg amoxi-clav.
I am so confused about all this. Can someone please just give me a medication and feeding schedule? The two medications that can't be taken with sucralfate are really throwing me for a loop. And does he have to eat an hour after every dose of it?
Please help. Thank you.

2024.05.02 00:57 Kittykayyyyt Can my cat have my antibiotic?

Okay so my cat got in a fight as he has before and has formed an abscess where the other cat bit or scratched him. He goes in our backyard and used to escape and not come back for hours but we've recently started keeping him in better. But he escaped for the first time in maybe a year, of course got into a fight the one time he gets out. He's been seen for the abscesses before and they have always given an antibiotic shot and he's been good. We drained one but that was traumatic for everyone involved so we always opted for just the shot and it cured up quick. He had one I treated at home with a medication that was meant for an eye infection in humans and it worked really well, I googled to make sure pets could have it and he had no bad side effects, just healed up. That medication is all used up. I do have a prescription for Sandoz - amoxi-clav 500&125 mg it says on the bottle, for humans.
I usually have no issue with the vet but recently I've had to go on leave and I honestly don't have the extra money to spend for the $400 trip it usually is. Is there anyway I can grind this pill down and weigh it on a small kitchen scale, or cut it into 8ths or anything and give him some for a few days to clear his abscess? I know some people would say no for sure but I did google and apparently this is commonly prescribed to cats, I obviously don't want to just do it without a vet telling me it's ok. Our vet is closed until tomorrow afternoon and I really don't want to wait to ask. I'm also afraid the vet will say no just because they legally can't say yes even if this is a good idea. Like I said I've done similar before but it was TOPICALLY. I'm hoping to just give him part of this pill somehow at a dosage for him.
He's a 20lb cat for reference. Please let me know if anyone has any advice on this without just telling me to go to the vet or saying I'm a bad owner for not having funds for the vet at the time. He used to be a really bad cat so I'm also still paying off the debt from his old vet bills, I'm talking every two weeks we had to get him in for a few hundred dollars at one point before we just kept him inside.
Sorry for the lengthy post lol I'm just a little nervous about what to do!
Thanks in advance

2024.04.08 19:32 Fraghead_V Confused and looking for answers

Hi everyone,
I suffered from these 2 tender swollen lumps in my right armpit the lumps felt deep, without any head and I took them as swollen lymph nodes. So I went to a GP and asked him about these lumps and I was told that this is an infection or hair follicles due to sweating and friction. I was prescribed a course of antibiotics ciplox 500 twice daily for 5 days. After that the lumps disappeared for 6-7 days and then i got them in my other armpit (left) similar lumps like before so I underwent another antibiotics course and the lumps went away again for few days and came then came back in my right armpit.
I used to wear tight underwear and belt would continuously rub against my pubic area and I then got one single lump in my pubic area (this lump was tender, hard but wide while others felt like a tube this felt like a small marbel or pea) i applied topical clindamycin fore 3-4 days and lump went away. Now coming back to armpit lumps after frustrated from taking antibiotics I visited a reputed dermatologist in my town who have 30 years of experience in medical practice. On looking at my lumps he told me that I am suffering from furunculiosis and prescribed me oral antibiotics, flusidic acid cream and muprocin cream. I was reluctant and frustrated from another antibiotic prescription so i contacted one of my cousin who is a dermatologist and have 15 years of experience. I described him my symptoms and medical history and he prescribed me doxy 100 mg twice daily until 10days after last lump clears up and along with doxy he prescribed me a topical antibiotics. I asked him about the diagnosis and he said he suspect HS to be the culprit here.
So i started taking doxy 100mg twice daily on 19th feb 2024 and started applying muprocin cream and flusidic acid cream as topic antibiotics. Along with this I started taking probiotics that doesn't contain lactobacilous strains. I removed dairy, added sugars and yeast from my diet completely. My left underarm went lump free for 20 days while lump count in my right armpit came down to 2-4 small pea sized. Then I had a flare up of 2-3 lumps in my left armpit. Whenever my course was about to end I would get a new lump and then had to extend my doxy course.
Now I started doubting the diagnosis because one dermat said its recurrent furunculosis and other one said that it can be HS. But I was frustrated after taking so much antibiotics and I decided to get 3rd opinion from a new dermatologist. She looked at my lumps and felt them by pressing them and using some magnifying glass. She then told me that it recurrent furunclulosis and that it happens because of antibiotics resistant bacteria and trauma to hair follicles due to friction. She prescribed me AmoxyClav 625 three times a day for 7 days, flusidic acid cream for topical and some anti-inflammatory/painkiller for 5 days. And asked to follow up after 7 days. Now it's 9th day I have extend my amoxyclav course from 7 days to 9 days. And today I followed up with my dermatologist the total count of lumps were 0 in groin, 0 in left armpit and just 1 single small lump that appeared today in my right armpit.
She updated my diagnosis and replaced amoxyclav with levofloxacin 500 twice daily for 15 days. As in diagnosis she added differential diagnosis of HS stage 1 if my condition continues for more than 6 months.
I am so frustrated and despirate to get answers for my health. I have been through a lot in past 1 year and my health anxiety is already off the roof. I feel so low and confused that I feel like giving up on life would be better than consuming antibiotics like candies without any clue.
I asked my current dermatologist that is it possible for recurrent furunculosis to show up in both armpits at the same time and in form of multiple lesions? To which she replied "yes it's possible and that I shouldn't panic as my lumps don't present as HS at the moment and if we still want to give that possibility a stretch then we can consider them as pre HS but that too if they keep coming back for a duration of more than 6 months.
A little medical history if this can somehow help: I surrered from pilonidal sinus 1.4 years back for which I finally got diagnosed and treated 1 year back in April 2023 end. During this time before treatment i used to feel feverish on waking up in morning and occasionally I used to get swollen lump at most 2 in single armpit. (Might be because of the sinus infection I was going through). I never found them continuous and persistent. So I ignored them as swollen lymph nodes because of my infection. Once I was treated for pilonidal sinus I stopped seeing those lumps or maybe they got more and more less frequent or rare. Until Jan 2024.
Can anyone help me with this? Please I have tried everything. I don't have any drainage from any of the lump. I do feel a needle poke or burn occasionally when I am sweating a lot or if there a new lump forming (this feels more like a burning pain for 1-3 seconds)
EDIT: added pics of my lumps from different days in the comments

2024.03.22 11:41 greengrasshopper19 Can I stop my antibiotics after day 1..?

26F 5’8, non smoker. I was prescribed 4mg Methylprednisolone starting 6 a day then one less everyday and 500-125 Amox-clav (twice a day) today at urgent care for an upper respiratory infection. The doctor did lung X-rays on me and I was tested negative for the flu and Covid. No pneumonia. I have had it before though. He gave me a shot in my arm and prescribed me these. It helped with my congestion a lot.. since I haven’t been able to breathe out of my nose for a week. So in a sense I do think something he gave me worked. I’ve been sick for almost two weeks now so at first I was happy with the relief but I’ve had a persisting headache and bad anxiety.. as well as increased heart palpitations and increased heart rate all day since taking these. Not really sure what to do but I’m considering not taking these tomorrow. It feels like someone is squeezing my head from the pressure. The anxiety is not helpful either. He also prescribed me Omeprazole 40mg once a day in the morning.. which I haven’t taken yet nor do I think I want to. Does this all seem routine to prescribe me all of these? Looking for some reassurance or direction.

2024.03.15 12:32 Constant_Emu3592 What is standard procedure for medicine side effects?

I'm a 30F (5'3, 130 lbs, no drug or alcohol use history) and I suffered side effects from medications... both prescribed and over-the-counter medications. I went to the doctors multiple times, and I am left pretty baffled and confused about what I should expect. I don't know how to bring up issues with medications without seeming like I'm crazy.
For example, if someone is on prednisone, as an example, and is experiencing a fast heart rate and jitters, insomnia, dizziness, and muscle weakness, what would you recommend doing? Would you be able to connect these symptoms to the prednisone medication? How would you differentiate between mental illness (like anxiety or panic attack) and the prednisone side effects?
What if someone comes in with a bunch of medications and hallucinations, jitters, fast heart rate, insomnia, pain, eye dilated... how would you know the hallucinations is mental illness verses the medications? What if a family member comes in and says all of this is bizarre and not near normal for them, would that make a difference in your diagnosis? And if the patient experiencing hallucinations from medications, would you keep them in the hospital or send them to a psych ward or send them home and tell them to stop the medication or give them more medication to calm their side effects and tell them to continue the medication?
I'm just not sure if I had weird experiences with my medication and doctors or it was just standard care and procedure or if the "standard procedure" caused more harm than good to me. As none of the doctor's seemed concerned about the side effects of the medications that I was taking. We did talk to a pharmacist who told us that he was extremely concerned and said to only take Amoxi. I realize now everything I experienced was actual side effects, like the pharmacist said.
For my own very well being, I really need this clarification.
There was an actual reason and diagnosis for the medication. How accurate was it? Well, it's at least in the realms of accurate. Exact? No. (Long fricken story as to how everything happened and why.) It started with a stuffed up head and nose and then gasping for air after eating a weird spice. And it windfalled into a severe infection where the ENT couldn't even put up an endoscope into my nose. He said I had a giant cyst in one of my nostrils. He prescribed me 500 MG of Amoxi Clav 875 x3 per day for 15 days. He had me do a CT scan.
Every doctor knew what I was taking, here's a general list:
Prednisone
Steroid Inhaler
Steroid nasal sprays
Amoxi
Nyquil Severe (too much... 3-4 days a day)
Advil
Mucinex
Anxiety medication (not before becoming sick)
Sudafed
And more, I just don't remember at this time.
This question popped into my head because I'm scared.
The other night I had a terrible headache. In the afternoon, my boyfriend gave me excerdin. My headache ended up going away. But then I experienced dizziness and nauseousness, lack of appetite, sick to my stomach, and fast heart rate.
Now that I know that I'm sensitive to medications, at least I can look out for side effects
But I'm scared of my experiences with doctors. I'm scared of side effects from medications. With both fears, I'm overwhelmed. I don't understand what is standard procedure. And I don't understand how to get help for side effects of medication, and how to prevent doctors from just saying I'm crazy....????

2024.03.13 01:33 Late_Question2574 High WBC on SA

Hi,
This is my second SA done, and it still shows a high WBC. The first time, the fertility doctor prescribed me doxycycline 100 mg, taking one pill a day for 7 days, and I took them, and I did the second SA, and the WBC still showed high. Now, my urologist prescribed me another medication called Amox-Clav 500, taking it twice a day for 10 days. Hope that this time does not know a high WBC. I tried to see the rest of the SA, but its too confusing

2024.02.16 04:35 meat_junkie Bleach bath for skin infection?

19, AFAB, 5'6", Smokes weed daily. Rheumatoid arthritis, taking tocilizumab for it. eczema, taking betamethasone for it
Hi, so recently I got a real bad flareup of eczema on my legs + ankles and I went to get seen and got prescribed Sandoz-Amoxi-Clav 500/125, three times a day for 10 days. This infection hasnt been going on long and I literally got my prescription yesterday.
Today the pus has mostly dried out and a lot of the infection seems to scabbed but not fully dried out? But it's still yk, infected looking and painful. Basically I was wondering how else I should take care of this? Should I just let the pills do all the work or would taking regular bleach baths help this infection move along faster? I know I should have asked questions but the doctor sorta rushed me out (serves me right for just going to a walk in ig)

I (34M) located in Canada have had an ear infection for going on 3 weeks at this point. I tested positive for Strep A and the doctors think that the strep infection made it's way into the middle ear and has caused the issue. I currently take Pristiq, Vyvanse for Anxiety and Pantoprazole for acid reflux. After 2.5 weeks of antibiotics should be ear still look like this? Here is a picture of my ear as of this morning (https://imgur.com/a/t5ve2D8)

2023.12.21 22:59 SaltNecessary7208 Been Suffering. Need advice 🙏

A few months ago noticed that my teeth were hurting upper left the 2 behind k9 giving me migraine headaches so I went to the endo and he told me we would do the one that hurt and then if that didn’t fix it we would do the one next to it too. Got one done and left. Then in a separate incident my back molar crown fell off and while I was getting it recemented the nerve was exposed, it was just bad luck. (I’m not the type who blames people and realize that it can happen to even the best dentists, I used to work as a dental assistant in high school so I have some understanding.) I went back and got the root canal on the back molar. About a month later I was having very bad headaches, chills, feeling hot in my head, clammy sweats and was ignoring it for a very long time thinking my body could fight whatever it was. I didn’t even know it was my teeth until finally it got to the point where both my ears were infected, and was ringing very loudly nonstop. I was lightheaded, irritable, couldn’t think clearly at all, even my speech was a little slurred so I went to urgent care and was prescribed 500 mg Amox 2x a day. Amox seemed to make it better but then on the 4th or 5th day chills and same feeling of malaise was coming back. Called my GP and he upped my dose to 875 amox 250 clav for 10 days. My teeth started to hurt very much upper left area and I felt like the back molar root canal was starting to go bad too so I went back to the endo he gave me another root canal in the upper left tooth behind the k9 next to the one he did. Afterward I told him I thought there was also something wrong with the back molar root canal he did ( it had a very curved root) he insisted it was the bite and adjusted them too low. (instinctively I knew there was something wrong bec I couldn’t bite down and could smell the infection seeping from the tooth into my throat) I insisted something was wrong and and told him I even felt septic. I had to repeat that there was an infection and he told me to wait until after the antibiotics were done 7 more days of suffering. I went back yesterday, he cleaned it out and redid the root canal but I don’t think it’s fixed bec I believe only 1 canal was cleaned out and my root is now spasming and I still have lots of pain when biting down and the headaches and weakness is coming back. The ears a ringing a bit again too, but not as loudly.
He also didn’t seem too confident about the problem being fixed. He does seem very busy and does the root canal in 1 hour slot times. I think I should go with another endodontist at this point but I just wanted to get some other opinions. Here are some of the X-rays of the lower molar root canal redo. I asked the office for all of them but these are the ones they sent. Thank you so much in advance for any help. The first pic is post and 2nd pic is pre operative.

2023.12.18 05:27 Willing_Category_905 I (23F 124 lbs) have been to 5 different doctors within the past 8 days, nothing is working. Help me.

My current symptoms are, loss of appetite, extremely painful lesions in mouth, (because of this, it is extremely difficult to eat, have only eaten bread and drank water within the past 3-4 days), on and off lower abdominal pain, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes. Whenever I eat anything besides bread or water, my mouth is filled with an extremely painful burning sensation that is more painful on my mouth lesions but also burns almost everywhere in my mouth. This burning sensation also occurs more-so when I am laying down. For some reason laying down causes the inside of my mouth to become extremely painful with an almost like pins and needles burning sensation. I have very swollen painful gums and am producing a lot of excess saliva.
I have been to the Urgent Care, the Emergency Room, the Gynecologist and an Oral Surgeon. The Urgent Care, 8 days ago, diagnosed me with Angular Cheilitis and sent me home with a Amoxicillin-Clav 875-125mg to take twice a day for 10 days. My symptoms at this time (8 days ago) included the symptoms I currently have, but were also accompanied by, constant chills and sweats (yet no actual fever), migraines, swollen face, nausea, extremely sore throat, and really bad ear ache.
Next, I went to the Oral surgeon, because I have a tooth that needs to be removed. This tooth I believe is or could be infected. It is the second to last molar on the left side, that had a former root canal. I never received a crown, so it ended up cracking and half of the tooth with the root canal fell out. I did not get this treated for months on end, so it appears to be ‘rotted’ by now (due to no dental insurance at the time). The Oral Surgeon said I had to get the tooth removed, but the lesions in the back of my mouth were due to pericoronitis, because another symptom I have is a swollen gym tissue behind wisdom teeth on the left side. He prescribed me with an oral rinse to use twice a day, Chlorhexidine Gluconate 0.12%.
After this, my mouth lesions spread like wildfire and my mouth became unbearably painful. The medications prescribed were not helping, and I became more and more sick feeling overall. At this time, right next to my ‘diagnosed angular cheilitis’, a small, ring-like lesion started to develop on my lip as well. This is when I became skeptical about this being an STD of some sort, So I went to the Gynecologist. I was STD tested, as I recently did have Chlamydia but was treated and was also not sure if i still have it. Because I was on my period, they could only take my blood for the STD testing. They said that the blood test came up negative for those specific STD’s, but, it’s possible I could still have HSV because they did not do an IGM test. I went online also to see my blood results, and I came up reactive for Hepatitis A ab I believe, yet they did not say anything to me about this over the phone.
My symptoms became more and more severe with excruciating mouth pain and I returned to the Oral Surgeon, who took a look in my mouth and said that I have Herpetic Gingivostomatitis, and it should clear up soon and I was sent home. I was in so much pain and needed HSV medication for my diagnoses, which lead me to the ER, as I was not able to eat from the painful lesions in my mouth. The doctors at the ER even seemed confused as to what was going on with me and my long list of symptoms. But they ended up prescribing me with more Amoxicillin 500 mg to take 3 times a day for 7 days, and also Valacyclovir 1g twice a day for 7 days. Main symptoms I still have is mouth burning/pins and needles and absolute loss of appetite.
The medications are not really working and my ‘angular cheilitis’ is also oozing like crazy and it’s all very painful, and almost impossible to sleep. Is this also a fungal infection? Yeast infection too? Meningitis? Blood infection from tooth? Help me.

2023.12.12 20:06 katn86 Need some encouragement

This community has been so amazing for me over the last year. I would be super lost and probably much worse off health wise if it weren’t for this place. I wouldnt have known what to do, or what to avoid to recover as quickly as I did.
I am going to be starting a keflex prescription for pneumonia today. I am very, very nervous about doing this.
I was floxed almost one year ago by four cipro pills, 500 mg each. I have been extremely lucky, from what I can tell, and made a pretty full recovery within the first two months, with a few short flares here and there.
I actually took keflex while floxed- it was the antibiotic I was switched to once I realized the cipro was messing me up- and while I don’t think it caused any additional problems- I finished the whole course and recovered meanwhile- I am still very nervous. I tried amox-clav about two months after cipro, and it brought about a scary flare, the worst of the ones I’ve had. Never had trouble with antibiotics before this.
I wanted to say thank you to all of you first, and also just ask for some encouragement as I do this. I’m really scared and it’s so hard to find anyone else who understands my fear. Doctors don’t acknowledge this, my family thinks I’m overreacting (they were very helpful in the acute floxing stage though, thankfully).
You all have been wonderful and I appreciate this community.

2023.10.13 08:44 matmah Looking for some ideas of what would compliment this. Hydrasynth Explorer, MPC Live 2, Roland SP-404 mk2

I am looking to add something to my small studio and I'm not sure what I could add to it. I say small as I need something that will fit on my desk, as well as being able to travel with it as I relocate once a year. The biggest size and weight would be about the same as my MPC. Patches are a must, as I need to recall anything that i use in a song.
I don't mind if it's a module or has keys, either works for me.
Currently thinking about these, but I am open to any and all ideas. Budget is say less than 500 usd.
Microfreak: Pretty much top of the list, but worried it won't add much on top of the Hydrasynth. Sonicware Liven Lofi-12: I think the drums lets it down, and I'd be worried that it is a one trick pony. A used Roland Verselab: I like the Roland Zen core sounds, but again i have pretty much all that in the MPC. I'd be getting used as they are pretty much selling for half price. Roland TR-8S: I do like this, but I could gdt the Verselab above which is half the size and price. Bass Station II: This is pushing the size and weight, but a lot of people seem to have fun with it. Korg Kaoss Quad: Pretty hard to get hold of now, but as I DJ as well, I could find other uses for it. Analog Heat +FX: Want it, but is it really worth that money? I also have lots of fx in both the SP and MPC.
I just returned the SH-4D as I just didn't quite think it was worth the money. Had it been cheaper i would probably have kept it. I would have prefered something a bit simpler from them with less key combinations. I wanted the sounds from the JUNO-106 and SH-101, not another groovebox.
My main types of music, are downtempo funk and lo-fi hip-hop. I also use e-pianos, clavs and organs a lot as well as retro funky bass type patches.

2023.09.25 19:05 heresiarchx Amoxicillin/ clavunaic acid question

I (31M) was prescribed amoxicillin /clav for a strep throat infection. 1 tablet every eight hours during eight days. The thing is I did a teleconsultation and my prescription was issued in french. It states:
AMOXICILLINE 500 MG + ACIDE CLAVULANIQUE (SEL DE K) 62.5 MG CP
Since I’m feeling sick, my girlfriend just went to the drugstore (we are in a German speaking location) and came back with the following:
AMOXICILLINUM / ACIDUM CLAVILANICUM 625 MG
It appears I was given a larger dose than prescribed. Or is this actually the same, just written different ?
I’d also like to ask: how likely would it be that this infection resolves without taking the antibiotics? Thanks for your help

2023.09.17 10:21 bipolarpilot i’m so confused

i’m so confused
hi i 18 Female am honestly confused as fuck and i don’t the greatest set of doctors on earth but that’s okay, im 5’2 and 105 lbs if that helps give any info i came on here to get another opinion because my medical story is very confusing. so starting back to june 11th 2023 i developed the symptoms of abdominal pain and nausea and i ended up going to urgent care on june 15th because of it and i was diagnosed with a UTI they did a culture and it came back negative for bacteria but i had high leukocytes. i was prescribed bactrim ds 800 but had a horrible severe reactions (not allergy) so i was then prescribed amoxicillin/clav 500-125. i felt better after that and went to the doctors to kinda talk to them about still feeling nauseous but they said it was normal so i moved along. again in july i developed another “uti” with no actual presence of bacteria. i again went to urgent care on july 5th after feeling symptoms for 4 days and was prescribed ciprofloxacin 500 mg. By this time i’ve been taking cranberry supplements and making sure trying to do everything correctly. Another month goes by to now in september i developed another set of symptoms but this time a little worse and developed faster than before so i did an at-home uti test which showed trace leukocytes. the next day i went to my doctors who said i just had trace leukocytes and they sent me to the emergency room because the possibility of appendicitis. (personally i knew it was another “uti”)but to cut out any other possibilities i went to the er they took my blood did an ultrasound and took my urine and they diagnosed me with high leukocytes as well. This is the THIRD “uti” with no actual bacteria present it’s just leukocytes.i was prescribed keflex but it made my stomach churn even on the first dose so i was switched to ciprofloxacin again. what is happening to me and why, how is it possible for me to have a uti but have no bacteria. Any doctors with anything pls help i do have all my test results if any want to look over.
MEDICATIONS I DAILY TAKE 20 MG lexapro 300 GABAPENTIN 120 MG SEROQUEL TWO TABLETS OF CRANBERRY SUPPLEMENTS
ANTIBIOTICS I WAS PUT ON bactrim ds 800/160 MG every 12 hours (incomplete) for 5 days amoxicillin/clav 500/125 MG every 12 hours for 3 days ciprofloxacin 500 MG every 12 hours for 7 days keflex 500 MG 4 times a day for 7 days (incomplete) ciprofloxacin 500 MG every 12 hours for 10 days AND ZOFRAN 4 MG FOR THE NAUSEA

2023.06.26 01:51 Canada_Animal_Lvr My dog died at the vet under suspicious circumstances

I have removed the Vet office name and names of the DR as I am only seeking opinions from professionals in the vet field..
Our dog (Zeus) was 5 years old; he's a male Pitbull terrier whom was neutered and 73lbs and located in Ontario.
We took him to his Vet (which I will not name here) on June 2nd 2022 to get his throat examined as his bark was reduced to just a squeak and we could feel some swelling in his throat. The Dr examined him for a few minutes before advising prescriptions of a steroid (Prednisone 50mg) and an antibiotic (Amoxi-Clav 500/125mg) and sending us on our way.
We waited until his medication was almost finished as directed but noticed his throat getting worse as now, we were hearing grumbles and noises when he was exhaling and his throat felt much more swollen.
We got him an urgent care appointment on June 16, 2023 at 3:00pm while he still had some antibiotics left but had just finished the Steroid. While I was waiting with Zeus in the exam room, I took a photo and some videos of my very happy, very alive best friend. The Dr entered the room and examined Zeus briefly before stating the best option is to bring the dog in the back operating room, give him some anesthesia so they are able to look in his throat and also to x-ray his throat as well. I was told the procedure should take about 45mins.
Within 30mins of giving my dog to them, I received a phone call that the vet was ready to see me. The Dr told me that Zeus was not doing well, that as soon as they gave him the anesthesia his throat closed up and he stopped breathing.
They put a tube down his throat to breath for him and told us there was no options for him. When they pull the tube out, he will choke and suffocate and there was nothing else we could do to help him. I asked they keep Zeus where he is so I can run out and bring my wife back to see him. The Dr hesitated but after a moment of pleading she agreed.
I ran out and picked up my wife from work and raced back, within 10 minutes we were back and the first thing we were told is that we needed to sign a form so they can euthanize him humanely or he will suffer otherwise, which was conveniently already printed up with Zeus’s name and information, on a clip board ready to sign. We were told if we do not sign it then they will remove the tube and he will suffocate, suffer and die anyways and that it was the only responsible choice is to sign it.
We were distraught as we were never warned that this was even a risk, there was no risk of death presented before the procedure was authorized. The DR went to ask another veterinarian; The Dr and owner of the Vet clinic to come assist. During this time, we questioned the vet technician that assisted the procedure on my dog and she explained as well that as soon as they gave him the injection of anesthesia, they noticed his tongue turned blue so ‘they acted immediately’ I could not get an answer on how long my dog was not breathing for before they got a tube down his throat.
The Dr which owns the clinic approached us about 5 minutes later and was visibly annoyed with having to speak to us, but directly contradicted what we were told by the Dr which performed the surgery and the vet tech. He claimed my dog stopped breathing before they administered any drugs or anesthesia and it was inevitable that he would stop breathing. We immediately disputed this and repeated what the vet tech had just told us, after which he left the room with the vet tech to an office with a visible window and appeared to berate them for telling us the truth.
At this point my dog has a breathing tube in his throat and we are draped over him, holding him and apologizing for the fate he’s now doomed. We did not hear any heartbeat, we looked in his half open eyes and the light did not dilate his pupils. I am not a medical professional so none of this seemed relevant while we were in hysterics learning that our happy and otherwise healthy dog is going to die.
We are left with many questions and very little answers
How long was my dog without oxygen before they were able to get a breathing tube down his throat?
Was my dog even still alive when we said good-bye to him and signed a form under duress to have him euthanized or let him suffer? We lay with our dog all the time and his heartbeat was always a familiar, comforting sound that was absent while we were saying good-bye to my best friend.
How was the anesthesia administered, through an IV or an injection?
Was this procedure the logical choice given what was known about his medical history?
Why were we not advised that there was any risk that our dog could die during what was explained as a simple procedure to look down his throat?
Were X-rays done before he was injected with anesthesia? If so why give him anesthesia if you can feel swelling in his throat and see it in an Xray?
We also request any x-rays and other documentation retained by The Vet clinic
Background on Zeus:
Zeus originally came under this Dr’s care as a result of a recurring stomach problem. After searching for answers for a couple of years and getting nowhere we decided to bring Zeus in for a consultation.
Zeus had developed several fatty masses on his body, the largest of which the Dr determined after doing a biopsy was a stage 4 mass tumor. Her opinion was that we should have that removed as its placement and size could have been a direct result of the stomach issues Zeus was experiencing. She recommended surgery to have it removed and had also suggested that we have another one removed because even though it had come back as inconclusive, she thought the chances of it also being a tumor were good.
After consulting with The Dr. we decided to go ahead with removal of the TWO largest and confirmed tumors but did not want to have the one on his leg removed at the same time as we did not want to put Zeus through excess trauma and longer healing process until we had confirmed that the “inconclusive” tumor was indeed a potential threat to Zeus’ quality of life.
He had the surgery in January which proved successful and Zeus was no longer experiencing the vicious stomach issues he had faced for two years prior. We agreed to readdress the remaining tumor in a few months should it grow or give any cause for concern.
However, this also calls to light the fact that the DR was aware that Zeus was prone to tumors, we strongly believe this should have been a deciding factor going forward in Zeus’ care when it came to any future medication regiments, procedures etc. and we firmly believe that the DR. did not weigh these factors before deciding to give Zeus the anesthetic when his throat was as inflamed and swollen as she stated it clearly was when he was brought in both on June 2nd and June 16th. Had she decided to take these factors into consideration before acting Zeus might still be here with us now.
If you have read this far, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I have submitted a complaint with the veterinary college but fear answers will never come. My wife and I need closure and without answers its been very hard. Are there any questions we missed and should be asking?
To top it off the vet requires us to pay over $1000 for the botched procedure before they will release our dogs remains. We setup a gofundme which I will not post here as that is not the point for my post.
If you are a vet or have experience in this field any input on what may or likely happened here please post it for us to help with closure and our grieving process.
Thanks everyone!

2023.05.31 00:49 Main-Truck7867 Road rash injury

28F - fell off my motorized cycle last Monday (May 22) and got a couple of cuts on my foot. I tried to clean them out as best as possible. Went to doctors on Thursday as my foot was swollen and red, and doctor prescribed a week of antibiotic pills (Amoxi Clav 500/125 mg). The swelling has decreased and it’s way less red now. However, the state of the cut is worrying me a bit - since it’s a bit deep / looks kinda black. Should I go back to doctor / should I be concerned over the colour / healing of the cut?

2023.05.01 23:04 SSScanada UTI won't go away after two rounds of antibiotics - next steps

Hello,
2.5 old Boston Terrier, female, spayed.
We noticed blood when she was peeing mid-March and took her to vet.
Nothing seemed wrong as per the physical exam (vulva etc.).
Urinalysis result showed (only writing values flagged-other values such as glucose, specific gravity etc are in normal ranges):
PH 8.5,
protein 3+
WBC 4-10
RBC >50
COCCI bacteria>100
minor amount of struvite crystals 4-10
Vet prescribed antibiotics (Apo Amoxi Clav 500/125 mg) - for 7 days

After finishing first round of antibiotics, we observed straining continued when she was urinating.
Another urinalysis were done. Results (only writing the flagged ones):
PH 8,
protein 2+
WBC 21-50 (worse than the first urinalysis)
RBC 2-3 (normal range this time)
COCCI bacteria 51-100
minor amount of struvite crystals 2-3
Vet prescribed second round of antibiotics (Apo Amoxi Clav 500/125 mg) - for 10 days

After second round of antibiotics, I got urine testing strips and checked at home for several days.
As per home testing, there is still blood in urine, PH around 6.5-7, specific gravity in normal ranges every day, and protein in blood 3+
I discussed with our vet home results and our options are:
  1. Xray to check if the UTI is resulted by stones, and if any, the location of the stones. If small stones, then go with prescription kibble diet. If big, then consider surgery to remove them.
  2. Urine culture to identify the type of the bacteria (if any) and prescribe another type of antibiotics. He is unable to prescribe another type of antibiotics unless we do urine culture. However, he can prescribe the same Apo Amoxi Clav for the third round with urinalysis.
Since money is concern, I am unable to do all sorts of diagnostic tests all together.
I kindly ask your opinion the likelihood of the underlying issue from your experience.
Will it be bad idea to try another round of Apo Amoxi Clav, and see if there is an improvement?
Or would you recommend that we simply go for XRAY already.
I will either rule out stones with XRAY, or bacteria with urine culture. Can't afford both of them at the same time (may do the other one 1-2 months later). She eats well, plays well, no accidents, no frequent peeing, nothing except straining longer than usual.
Thanks for your feedback.

2023.03.05 06:27 jamdolly19 Antibiotics Questions! Looking for immediate insight on 1. the likelihood of allergy development & 2. whether I should be taking them now?

Hello! TLDR: I would like to know how likely it is that I have developed a penicillin/drug allergy? I also suspect I have strep right now, but can not go to the doctor for a few more days. Wondering what I should do to mitigate symptoms/if I should take the antibiotics that I have at home from a previous medical incident. More details below.
I am a 21 year old female.
When I was around 19 years old I had a weird incident where one side of my face swelled up badly, my mouth hurt, and I was feeling generally ill/feverish. Doctors had a hard time identifying where the infection started and why, but I stayed at the hospital for 1-2 days and was prescribed antibiotics to deal with it after. I was instructed to take amoxicillin somewhere around a month (this seemed odd since I had never been on them that long whenever u needed them before). I’ve always been instructed to take all prescribed antibiotics to prevent bacteria resistance, but ended up having an allergic reaction (hives) after about 2.5 weeks on into taking the antibiotics. I’m wondering how likely it is that I would have developed a long term penicillin allergy from this? I’ve never had issues with any other drugs and I’m not sure if this is just be a reaction from being on them too long or something I should be concerned about?
I’m also suspecting that I have strep right now. I never had strep throat until high school, but ended up getting it dozens of times in the few years before my tonsillectomy at 17. I have not had strep (or any memorable sore throats) since I’ve had my tonsils removed, but am experiencing that familiarly awful feeling of razor blades in my throat while swallowing right now. I am a college student at a large university and heard it’s been going around. Unfortunately, I can not go to the doctor until Monday afternoon/Tuesday. The campus clinic is closed on the weekend and I do not have the ability or finances to go to another hospital or urgent care right now. I have a midterm Monday morning that I can not miss class for an appointment, but am worried about it escalating. I have 14 amox/clav 500/125mg tablets leftover and am not sure if it would be a good idea to take them? Any other recommendations would be appreciated!
Edit: The last time I have taken antibiotics was in 2020 when I had the incident explained below.
I have been taking OTC medicine (dayquil/ibuprofen/Tylenol) for the sore throat I have now. It’s been helping, but I still have notable throat pain.
