2024.05.16 16:04 Educational-System85 Tournament Review: Dubai Police Masters 2024

Dubai Police Global Chess Challenge was a new event started and hosted by Dubai Police from 4th to 12th May. I have played multiple times in United Arab Emirates including the Sharjah Masters and Abu Dhabi Masters. This was my 5th time playing in UAE.

Organization

The Master Event is very nicely organized in the Dubai Police Officers Club. Organizers have arranged transport from official hotels to the tournament venue. They were very welcoming and gave a lot of respect to players. UAE has a great history of organizing big chess events including the Dubai Open, Sharjah Masters, Abu Dhabi Open, etc. This tournament will be a new addition and hopefully, they will organize this every year. Organizers provided Black Tea, Desi Tea (Karak Tea), Coffee, and a selection of different cakes and croissants. All the boards are Digital Chess Board and the tournament games are published on Lichess broadcast and on other websites. The other two events, Open and Youth, were organized at Dubai Chess Club. It’s a different venue. I will talk specifically about the Masters event.

Accommodation

Organizers provided a list of hotels. Players are allowed to book it from anywhere or they can even choose different hotels. (Staying in the official hotel was not compulsory) I stayed at the Kingsgate Al Jaddaf Hotel which is one of the hotels mentioned by the Organizers in the list. I paid 28500 INR ($350) for 9 Nights for a single room without breakfast. I booked it from an Indian booking website. Team Dubai Police provided pick up and drop up from the hotel. Overall, the hotel stay was very good and the price was also very moderate. For the hotel and overall stay experience, I would rate 9.5/10.

Schedule

From 4th to 12th May Daily single round. Everyday round starts at 5 PM except the last day at 10 AM. The event consisted of a total of 9 rounds.

Playing Field

The Master’s category is open for above 2300 players. The total number of players was 135 and 124 players were 2300+ Three 2700 players participated including Yu Yangyi, Tabatabaei Amin, and Artemiev Vladislav. 35% of the total participants were Grandmasters and almost all players had some title.

Should you play in the Next Edition?

As I said above, this was my 5th time playing classical events in UAE country and I would highly recommend it. I always feel very safe while traveling. Food is cheap and hospitality is great. There is not a single thing to complain about the event.

Here are some ratings according to me

Organization – 10/10 Food – 9/10 (I ordered from nearby restaurants. Mostly Indian food) Accommodation – 9.5/10

When I published my last article about the Rilton Cup, I got 2 messages from players to include a breakdown. (USD figures are approximate)

I gained 40 rating points and I made best rating performance in my life. I already have 5 IM norms so I don't have to worry about more norms. This is my 1st classical tournament in 2024 and I am happy with the performance.

Hi there. My husband and I are considering relocating to Cleveland from Tampa next month. I visited the city several times while living in Pittsburgh and liked the overall vibe, restaurants, museums, and access to outdoor recreation and lakes. We originally were considering Minnesota but thought Cleveland might be a more affordable choice. We are moving to get away from the Florida heat, humidity, oppressive sunshine, and mold.
Looking for a nice 2 br with at least 1000 square feet, urban, suburban, or small town in the metro - doesn't really matter. Would prefer hardwood floors, nice greenery, in unit washedryer, and pet friendly is a must. An on-site sauna and fitness facilities would be a nice bonus.
Can spend up to $2200 but prefer $18-2000 range. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I am having a hard time finding a decent 2 BR apartment with hardwood floors as most apartments appear a bit dated with carpeting.
Also, if anyone has visited Pittsburgh I am looking for a neighborhood similar to Mt. Lebanon, Shadyside, Mexican War Streets or Sewickley as my first choice. I am unfamiliar with the different neighborhoods around Cleveland. As I only have 2 weeks to decide, any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

I used to be a servewaiter at a couple of restaurants and would frequently come on this subreddit to sneer at the content. At that time, I saw tipping as a necessity: the only way I’d be able to make above minimum wage. As an avid supporter of anything meritocratic, it made sense on paper. Theoretically, the better service you provide, the more money you make in the long run. However, now removed from the restaurant industry, I can see that’s nowhere near the truth.
I’ve worked at 3 restaurants:

A small burrito shop where the target customers were drunk college kids.
A medium-sized Indian sitdown with average pricing.
A premier Italian restaurant in Midtown Manhattan where the average table spent $100+.

In retrospect, I can honestly say that my paycheck did not reflect my skills as a waiter, but rather my ability to get hired by upscale establishments.
That’s what makes tipping culture a mirror of American big business culture and capitalism as a whole. It does nothing except poach the workers out of small startups and lead them to wealthy chains with money as an incentive. I could never make the amount I made in job #3 at job #1 simply because of the lack of high food prices and a suboptimal consumer base. It doesn’t incentivize charisma and a warm personality, it incentivizes shortcuts and job-hopping.
Now, with every small store having to resort to having 2+ food delivery apps just to stay in business, the workload that the “small shop” waiter is forced to handle is much more than the “upscale dining” waiter, with no rate increase to match. Any waiter who has worked in a small restaurant with 3 food delivery apps and 8 tables will tell you that they are not properly compensated for the added stress of managing those 3 ipads. It’s unfair to the little guy, and only serves to profit those who don’t have to worry about profits in the first place.

I am truly attempting to find some answers to the above question for the first time in this year of crazy adventures. Firstly, I am doing this because my editor (hey, Mandy!) asked me to (thank you, Sabrina :P), and secondly, it might help me answer the thousands of questions I have in my head and the people who ask this question repeatedly.
To be honest, I don't currently have any travel plans or airline tickets to return home, but the more I see, the more I want to see.
Yes, it's similar to a narcotic, but a good, completely legal one. Following much thought, this is the initial list. However, I have a feeling that the reasons might shift in a few months.

I enjoy testing my boundaries and pushing myself.

Living in a cozy home, be it a palace, a room, an apartment, or a studio, breeds complacency and laziness. You can shower EVERY day, you know where your belongings are, and you can use the restroom whenever you need to (long-term travelers understand how challenging some of these things may be when you're on the road). To put it briefly, living in a location you call home is (too) simple!
That was altered by travel. One day, you can find me hiking Tasmania's Cradle Mountain, and the next, I'll be sleeping beneath a million stars in the wide Indian desert. Next, I might go diving in the Great Barrier Reef or perhaps skydiving in Lake Taupo at a height of 50,000 feet (okay, so I haven't really done the last one yet, but I've made the reservation).hope for the best! adore spending time with myself
Many people planned their vacations to India, Bali, and Rome in the footsteps of Elizabeth Gilbert and her Eat, Love, Pray adventure, and many more believe that the destination they choose would transform them. Count me among them.
And even though I didn't truly discover who I am or the man I want to marry, this last year has undoubtedly assisted me in freeing up mental space. I was able to separate my complete chaos of a personal life into several categories so that I could prioritize joy and happiness above drama and depression.

I enjoy making new friends.

I think that somewhere inside of me, since I started travelling and was compelled by the circumstances, was my previous self. I recall Sabrina as a young girl, outgoing and unafraid to strike up a conversation. Finding her and persuading her to come out of the shyness closet took some time. Layers of corporate life veiled her, but eventually she broke free, and we have been together ever since. (It's me, in case you missed it.) I've met some wonderful individuals while travelling, and some of my favorite travel-related memories are of times spent with them.

I enjoy taking risks and being uncontrollable.

I used to be a complete control freak who was obsessed with the details of my upcoming day, week, and month. I've had to give it up in favor of the unexpected in the past year—the enchantment of not knowing where you're going, if you're going to sleep, what you're going to do, or who you're going to meet.
I adore that every day is just like this—it's the true spirit of adventure. I have no idea where I will be spending Christmas this year. I have no notion where I'm heading beyond the Pacific Islands; the world is wide open.
