2024.05.16 20:22 SultanOfSodomy Building a PC for a specific scientific software (specs inside). What about these 3000€ builds?
Hi!
I'm selecting parts for ~3000€ PC+Case+Monitor for a specific scientific software. I'd appreciate your help in maximizing the performances I can get from the budget.
Here's the recommended software specs:
- Intel Core CPU with 8+ cores and AVX support (I know it to be AVX-512)
- 32 or more GB RAM
- *some generic HDD for large data*
- 1TB or more SSD
Here's the enterprise solution listed in software specs pdf. I have no idea how good the proposed enterprise machine is as I have no idea how old the software specs are:
- 2x Intel Xeon-Silver 4110
- 256GB DDR4 2666 ECC REG
- 5x 4TB HDD (not specified but I'd bet in RAID5)
- 2x 2TB SSD (not specified but I'd bet RAID1)
Monitor is 21:9 ~ 27/29". No gaming stuff, it just need to contain a lot of windows and plots. I selected the cheapest decent monitor in range.
Not required but nice to have:
- fast copy from external USB disk. USB4/Thunderbolt could be very interesting.
- some minimal CUDA required. No large models, just running specific kernels for image analysis. 4060 with 8GB should be more than sufficient as the task is largely CPU bound.
- analysis might be days long without interruption. Not interested in overclock, just best compromise of performance and stability for the available budget.
- not interested in case window and/or RGB/LED. Silent boring monolith is my preferred way. But if colorful ends up cheaper is ok, too.
My 3 different
pcpartpicker.com ideas:
- strong desktop AMD CPU with AVX-512 (Ryzen 9 7950X3D)
- strong desktop Intel CPU with AVX-512 (Core i9-10980XE)
- last generation strong desktop CPU (Core i9-14900K, that has no AVX-512)
Long time since my last build, and first time user of
pcpartpicker.com, so I might be doing some errors here, please be patient. I've also enabled the comments there so please feel free to roast by builds there.
I tried to select RAM memory according to QVL list for each selected motherboard, but I don't know how strict those are. Please fine the link to QVL list in the description of each build.
I selected only the items available on italian Amazon

🤔 Microsoft’s AI ambitions lead to 30% rise in emissions M
icrosoft’s AI ambitions lead to 30% rise in emissions - Microsoft's commitment to being carbon-negative by 2030 is threatened by a 30% increase in its carbon emissions, largely due to its growing focus on AI technologies.
- The company's expansion of AI operations necessitates building more data centers, which rely on energy-intensive materials like steel, concrete, and microchips, further complicating their carbon reduction goals.
- Despite its renewable energy claims, Microsoft is acknowledged for using instruments like renewable energy credits (RECs) that might mask actual carbon emissions, indicating a challenging path ahead to meet its sustainability targets.

Stability AI reportedly runs out of money and in negotiations to sell
- Stability AI, known for its open-source image generator Stable Diffusion, is negotiating a sale due to financial struggles, despite a valuation of $1 billion.
- The company raised over $100 million in 2022 but struggled to turn its free software into revenue while facing stiff competition from rivals like OpenAI and Midjourney.
- Founder and CEO Emad Mostaque resigned amid management issues, and the company faces significant expenses and liabilities, projecting $153 million in costs against only $11 million in revenue for 2023.

Apple unveils AI-enhanced eye tracking, music haptics, voice shortcuts
Apple recently unveiled new accessibility features that will launch later this year. One of these features is Eye Tracking, which enables users with physical disabilities to navigate their iPhones and iPads using only their eyes.
By leveraging the front-facing camera and AI, Eye Tracking allows precise control through a “
Dwell Control” feature, eliminating the need for additional hardware.
Another noteworthy addition is Music Haptics, designed for users who are deaf or hard of hearing. When enabled, the Taptic Engine in iPhones plays taps, textures, and refined vibrations synchronized with music audio.
Additionally, Apple has introduced Voice Shortcut, which allows users to create custom voice commands for specific actions on their devices. With Voice Shortcut, users can perform tasks hands-free by simply speaking their personalized commands
Why does this matter? This would encourage the development and advancement of AI technologies in the accessibility domain, ultimately benefiting individuals with disabilities across different platforms and devices.

Why does this matter? As more sophisticated AI models become accessible, we can expect further improvements in various applications, from digital assistants to natural language understanding and generation.
Source Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike leave OpenAI
OpenAI co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever
announced that he is leaving the company — following months of speculation of Sutskever’s role from the November 2023 Sam Altman ousting.
- Sutskever said he is confident that OpenAI will ‘build AGI that is both safe and beneficial’ under the current leadership.
- Also leaving is Sutskever’s superalignment group co-lead Jan Leike, announcing his departure with a cryptic resignation post.
- The news follows months of departures largely coming from OpenAI’s superalignment and safety teams, fueling speculation.
- OpenAI CEO Sam Altman named Jakub Pachocki as the new chief scientist, a key researcher on the creation of GPT-4.
After months of tensions, the speculation around Ilya’s future with Sam is finally put to rest. But questions surrounding the safety team departures still remain. Also important to watch is where Sutskever and Leike land next, with two of AI’s brightest minds now officially on the market.
Android phones enter the AI era
Google
announced a host of new AI integrations coming to Android phones at its I/O Developer Conference, bringing its powerful Gemini model on-device to enable upgraded smartphone experiences.
- Google’s Gemini Nano model will be integrated into the Pixel later this year, allowing for enhanced multimodal capabilities.
- Gemini features will be easily accessible with a new overlay, which improves and understand context to provide dynamic suggestions.
- A Circle to Search feature, allowing users to query anything on screen, gains homework help features via a LearnLM model.
- Google is also bringing a new AI security feature soon, providing real-time alerts on calls that appear to be scams.
While everyone awaits the iPhone AI announcements, Google’s Android AI era is rolling. With Gemini coming directly on-board, the potential is there — but if Apple integrates ChatGPT, it may remain tough sledding against the dominant market leader.

2024.05.16 19:32 ceezyyy Build Help for a $1,600 Gaming/Streaming/Video Editing/Productivity Workstation
Hi,
I am looking for some critique on my build. Ideally this will be used for video editing, streaming, and playing games at 1440p. I want to go with the Intel/Nvidia combo for video editing and better optimization for 3D rendering as well since that is something I'm interested in. I am looking to stay around $1,600 for the tower, not including any OS or peripherals.
What would you change?
Should I put more money into the cooler, case, or power supply?
Is the motherboard overkill, good enough, or is there a better option for the price?
Should I use a separate SSD for the OS, or just get a better SSD entirely?
Thanks!

2024.05.16 18:04 Kaikasper Sporadic loss of display, monitors go black and computer restarts or seemingly freezes
For months my computer has suffered from a sporadic loss of display followed by a computer restart or freeze. I apologize if I have selected the wrong flair as I don't know if it's caused by drivers, faulty hardware or if it's a BSOD. It always starts with my monitors going black so I haven't actually seen a blue screen.
Symptoms - Loss of display, monitors goes black but any sound playing will continue for a while, it also sounds like the CPU fan is set to max speed followed by a computer restart after approximately two minutes. This leads to the generation of a DMP file.
- Loss of display, monitors goes black, any sound seems to disappear immediately, sounds like the CPU fan is set to max speed and the computer seems to freeze up / stop responding. In these cases I have waited as much as 11 minutes before turning the machine off. In these cases no DMP files are generated but Event Viewer shows a ton of nvldmkm.sys and / or dwm.exe errors.
The first time it occoured was in November 2023 during a loading screen in TW Warhammer 3, at the time i didn't think much of it but it soon happend again in the same situation. Over the coming months the frequency of the error would increase significantly. At the time of writing the error has occoured more than 40 times. I started logging what I was doing at the time of the error. It most commonly occoured shortly after launching a game. At some point it was almost 50-50 if the PC would crash from launching a game.
Statistics - The Error has occoured 20+ times within 3 minutes of launching a game. I've timed this with a stopwatch.
- The Error has occoured 6 times while in the middle of a game, with 1 hour + playtime.
- The Error has occoured 4 times shortly after closing a game, within 3 minutes of closing the game.
- The Error has occoured 6 times during regular web browsing, reddit, youtube etc.
The Error is not unique to one game. It has occoured when playing 10 different games.
Technical Specifications - OS: Win11 Home
- MB: Asus TUF Gaming B650 Wifi Plus
- BIOS: 2611 (error also occoured when BIOS was 1654)
- GPU: ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4090 OC Edition
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- Memory: Corsair Vengeance DDR5 2x 16GB 6000mhz
- SSD: Kingston KC3000 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD 2TB
- PSU: ASUS TUF Gaming 1000W Gold
Attempted fixes by me prior to service - Reinstalling the GPU driver multiple times, even removing it beforehand using DDU and directly downloading it from Nvidia instead of using experience.
- Reinstalling Windows multiple times. Both using the bult in "reset" function and by using a flashdrive doing a completely fresh install.
- I tried pretty much everything mentioned in this reddit thread
- I have tested using two different monitors. Normally both are in use but I have tested them individually and the error occours regardless of which monitor is connected and if both are. The monitors in question are a Asus PG279Q and a TUF VG27AQ. Both connected to the GPU with DPI cables.
- I ran memtest86 and according to it everything was okay.
The machine was returned to the seller and they attempted to fix the machine however they have been unable to diagnose the error. All they did was reinstall windows and according to them "update microsoft drivers" which I had done myself multiple times at that point. After I got the machine back from service the frequency of the error has been reduced, specifically there's no longer a high chance of the error occouring when launching a game. Most Errors has occoured during regular web browsing or in a game loading screen. The symptoms remain the same and the errors in Event Viewer are the same.
Attempted fixes by the seller - Reinstall Windows
- Update Bios to 2611 (was 1654 prior to service)
- Performed a BurnInTest for 3 hours. No issues.
- Performed a Furmark test for 3 hours. No issues.
- Performed a Prime test for 3 hours. No issues.
- Watched 1 hour of youtube. No Issues.
DMP Files Here are the DMP Files. There are 10 files from before the seller attempted to fix the machine and 2 from errors occouring after.
I am at a complete loss as to what could be the issue and I don't know how to proceed. I've provided all the same information to the seller but so far they seem unable to diagnose the issue. They never tried to cause the error at their end prior to reinstalling windows when it was possible to almost guarantee an error by launching a game which is sadly no longer possible as the frequency has been reduced. This sadly makes it much more difficult to diagnose.
Recently I tried to check my realtek internet and audo drivers. They all seem up to date, they are either the same or newer than the ones showed in Asus Armory Crate and on the Motherboard's website. I've tried using Wi-Fi instead of an ethernet cable and using different DPI ports on the GPU but the error still occours.
Please help, Thanks.

2024.05.16 17:34 TheGamingCow321 NR200P Build, what to do with an extra $200/300
I saved up money throughout the year to build this PC. I recently graduated and received some extra cash that I am willing to throw at my build. Around $200 or $300 is something I would feel comfortable with, but can be convinced to spend some more if it would mean a serious upgrade. Are there any parts that I am sacrificing too much on? I want to play on 1440p for games like R6S and Horizon Forbidden West. Additionally, I will use this to do some CAD modeling on the hobbyist scale with max 8 parts.
Case, keyboard, and mouse have already been purchased. I have access to a Microcenter in the Houston area.

2024.05.16 17:05 SpecialChain7426 Is there any part that i should change before pressing the buy button?
I will be using my pc for gaming & video editing/ video generating using scripts/ batch editing etc… these are usually very slow on my outdated laptop.
For gaming, i want to not think about whether or not i can run a game.
Here is what i intend to buy

2024.05.16 16:56 Viselc Could use some feedback for my new 4070 Super build
Hey Everyone
After almost 9 years, I'm starting to see the first malfunctions and issues with my old 1080 build.
I've therefore decided to with an upgrade again, hoping that this one will also be enough for the next years.
This is my current list:
PCPartPicker Part List I'll primarily be using it for gaming (Triple A Games as well as games such as Lol, Overwatch, Valorant etc.) in 1440p. I do like the idea of being able to play on 4k eventually, however the main target for the time being is 1440p.
I've also tried to keep the build under 2k. How is it looking for everyone? Anything that could be adjusted?
Is a 850w too much for the pc and should I go for 750?
Appreciate the comments!

2024.05.16 16:55 DJNayKid What would you change?
I am trying to Keep this build as close to $1000 as I can but am up for a bit more if it is an upgrade that makes a ton of sense.
haven’t built a PC in about 20 years. My last photo editing PC was a beefy Dell XPS that has lasted me 12 years. At the time the specs were too good for the sale price to justify a new build. I’m getting into video now and need something stronger for Premier and Photoshop. I put together these parts, but need a second opinion. Are these parts good? Will they work together well? What would you change? Thank you!

2024.05.16 16:29 MrGenericPoster Random Locking/Freezing on New Build
Troubleshooting Help:
What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list. Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive. I built a new PC at the beginning of April and have had issues with unrecoverable freezes.
The freeze/crash does not generate a BSOD or any critical/fatal message in EventViewer. The computer just stops responding and whatever image was on the monitor will stay there indefinitely until I hold the power button.
The freezes do seem slightly more likely to occur when under load, but load tests don't seem to cause it. Most common scenario is gaming w/ youtube playing. Though it has happened completely idle as well.
Sometimes boot will fail and the diagnostics lights indicate either DRAM or VGA (never CPU or Boot). But simply retrying is generally successful.
List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem. - Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool. It --almost-- always passes. It has failed once. It showed "Hardware problems were detected. To identify and repair these problems, you will need to contact the computer manufacturer" for a bit. However, I never saw the final report output in EventViewer of that diagnostics because at 37% complete the aforementioned freeze happened and it did not complete. Which makes me think the failure was a symptom of a different issue, not actually RAM hardware issues.
- Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool
- Several different load tests for memory, CPU, GPU, and storage. The freeze has not occurred while running any of those. Temperatures are fine.
- Re-seating everything except the CPU. LGA pins make me nervous and aren't covered by the MSI warrant for some reason so that's a last resort to me.
- A lot of BIOS/OC settings. None have seemed to effect the issue.
Provide any additional details you wish below. I'm not sure which part would cause this behavior if having issues. Any suggestions on what else to try and how to diagnose something with no logs or consistency would be appreciated.

2024.05.16 09:52 Famous-Performance11 Collinearity in Gravity Equations
Hello,
I am trying to estimate a GE, but I am running into an issue I can't wrap my head around. I am using importer and exporter time-varying FEs (to control for GDP, multilateral resistance, ...), and country pair time-invarying FEs (to control for distance, shared language, ...).
The problem is that when I generate RTA dummies (for my RTA of interest), the importer and exporter time-varying FEs perfectly explain two of the RTA dummies (RTA_importer and RTA_exporter, which measure whether an importeexporter is part of the RTA (so only after its creation year)), and collinearity makes them drop from the ppml estimation. I however do need therse coefficient for interpretation. How can I solve this? I am using the ppmlhdfe package.
Thank you!

2024.05.16 09:42 Warwolf926 My dream pc I had a got some input from a Redditer and now I’m curious what other people have to say about it so give me some input
So originally, I had a list of parts and I posted it on this subject earlier today and a Redditer gave me some input in this is the list he came up with and I agree with it now that I’ve looked it over but I’m curious what the rest of the community think of it. My goal for this PC is to be a complete overkill PC for any task, but I will be mainly using it for gaming. I don’t care about the price range as long as it’s less than $10,000 give or take so go nuts Reddit.

So I am brand new to PC building and I’ve gotten a list of parts for my dream PC and I just want to get some input from you guys on what to add or change my goal for this PC is to have it be the best PC you can build, but I will mainly use it for gaming but I don’t care if it’s overkill and I don’t care about the price as long as it’s under $10,000 give or take here are the components I will be using and they also don’t know what to do about fans if stock will be fine or what fans I’ll need to get
