Joe Lieberman, former U.S. senator and VP candidate, has died

2024.03.28 17:55 ctmirror Joe Lieberman, former U.S. senator and VP candidate, has died

Joseph I. Lieberman, the Connecticut senator who approached the pinnacle of Democratic politics as Al Gore’s running mate in 2000 only to be driven from the party six years later over his support for the invasion of Iraq ordered by the Republican who beat them, died Wednesday. He was 82.
Lieberman, who had been working to find a candidate to lead a presidential ticket for the No Labels movement he served as a founding chairman, died in a New York City hospital after a fall Tuesday, a family spokesman said. His wife Hadassah and family members were with him.
He won his fourth and final term as a U.S. senator from Connecticut as an independent in 2006 after losing a Democratic primary to Ned Lamont that was dominated by Lieberman’s unflinching support for a war President George W. Bush launched on the basis of false intelligence that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction.
The loss, in Lieberman’s telling, led to his rebirth outside any party. He remained a member of the Democratic caucus in the Senate but endorsed and campaigned for John McCain against Barack Obama in 2008, culminating in Lieberman’s primetime address to the Republican National Convention.
In a recent interview with The Connecticut Mirror, one of two planned shortly before his death, Lieberman insisted that a third-party ticket could compete against President Joe Biden and former President Donald J. Trump — even though No Labels had yet to find a candidate.

... Though he lost in the general. I'd argue however, that it all worked out in the end for the best.

Joe Loserman is indirectly the reason the Dems got crushed so hard in 2010 and why we didn’t have a public option in the Aca.

2023.05.11 01:26 FakeElectionMaker 2008 Democratic primaries.

2008 Democratic primaries.
Throughout Steve Welch's presidency, many registered Democrats in the South and Appalachia voted Republican at the federal level and opposed his policies.
During the 2008 Democratic primaries, the following candidates opposed Steve Welch (excluding Joe Lieberman):
  • Randall Terry
  • John Wolfe Jr.
  • Keith Judd
  • Ed O'Donnell
  • Vermin Supreme
  • At least a dozen others.
Lieberman announced his candidacy for President on 18 December 2006, following his loss of reelection against Ned Lamont.
Lieberman campaigned as a moderate estabilishment Democrat, supportive of bipartisanship and estabilishment policies. His campaigning focused on registered Democrats in the South who were dissatisfied at Steve Welch's policies.
Lieberman managed to get on the ballot in all primary contests and caucuses (except for Guam and American Samoa).
Lieberman did very poorly on the first four primary contests. But on Super Tuesday, the former Senator for Connecticut managed to win delegates in Connecticut (his home state), Oklahoma, Arkansas and Tennessee, the latter three coming from the conservative Democrats he targeted.
But the failure to win any contests and the pointlessness of challenging the incumbent caused Lieberman to suspend his campaign and endorse John McCain.
The "Uncommitted" option managed to win delegates in Kentucky (8) and Louisiana (2). Randall Terry did well in KY, and Keith Judd won 43% of the vote in West Virginia.

2022.07.28 05:50 Ok-Tomatillo2421 Idea: post-primary, independent candidacy

As the game is, if you wish to run as an independent you have to launch your campaign before primary elections have concluded. I wish you could join a general election after primaries have ended as an independent. Assuming there’s still a realistic timeframe to decide to join the race (e.g., to theoretically get registered for the ballot), I think it would be a really neat feature to add to the game.
Think Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) running as an “independent Democrat” in 2006 after loosing the primary bid to the anti-Iraq War candidate, Ned Lamont, or Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Ala.) running a write-in campaign in 2010 after loosing her primary to Tea Party candidate, Joe Miller.
It would allow you to run again after a close primary if you believe you have substantial support from independent voters. Though uncommon, it would be neat if the occasional NPC could run an independent bid after loosing the primary especially if they’re the incumbent or have a high approval rating.

2021.11.04 11:11 StevenYvan Socialist candidate India Walton defeated in the Buffalo elections for mayor thanks to the machinations of Democratic Party centrist leaders

Socialist candidate India Walton’s loss in the mayoral elections in Buffalo is another example of the double standards and dishonesty of Democratic Party centrists. Walton beat Byron Brown fair and square in the Democratic Party primaries in June. She lost on Sunday because in addition to a flood of big money supporting Brown in his successful write-in campaign in Sunday’s election, the centrist Democratic Party leadership of the state of New York refrained from providing Walton with meaningful support. The Democratic centrists would prefer to have a traitor win the elections than to have a real progressive triumph.
I remember clearly the same thing happening to then progressive anti-war candidate Ned Lamont in CT (who I personally campaigned for, house to house in New Haven and then at the polls) who defeated Joseph Lieberman, who then left the party to run as an independent. The Lamont campaign pleaded with Bill Clinton and Obama to come to CT to campaign for him, but it never happened. As a result the Democrats lost the opportunity to have a much-needed 60-person majority in the Senate.
Compare that with independent Bernie Sanders. In order to run in the primaries in 2016 he had to swear that he would support the winning candidate, that is Hillary Clinton. “Do as I say, not as I do” is the identifying slogan of Democratic centrist leaders.
