REPORTER: What does this mean?
PASHINYAN OFFICE: The commissions had installed several border posts to locate the coordinates on the ground. These coordinates were taken from the 1976 maps. Now the cartographers have agreed on the border lines between the posts, again based on the same maps. In other words, the reproduction of the border in these areas is complete and signed, and the border is considered delimited in these sections.
REPORTER: Why the 1976 maps?
PASHINYAN OFFICE: It's the map with de jure power at the time of the collapse of the USSR. The Armenian government announced that we were not drawing a new border, but rather reproducing the existing border at the time of the collapse of the USSR.
REPORTER: The commissions' statement says that these 1976 maps went through legal procedures in 1979. What does it mean, and why didn't we use the 1990 maps?
PASHINYAN OFFICE: In 1979 the relevant USSR authority verified the 1976 maps and their legal basis. These maps were used until the collapse of USSR. These are the most recent maps verified by authorized state agencies of USSR.
REPORTER: Not all border posts have been installed in the convoluted section of Kirants. How will this be resolved? Will you build new roads or houses?
PASHINYAN OFFICE: The 3 remaining coordinates of Kirants were pinpointed with the use of a computer and the border posts will be installed later. The rest [another 8 posts in Kirants] are already there. The good news for Kirants is that around 25 hectares of land that have been unreachable for 33 years will be returned to the village. The border resembles the 1976 line. As we said earlier, yes, there is a need to build a bypass road, which can be accomplished in 2-3 months. We will also rebuild the road between H-26 and Acharkut and Kirants, which is an alternative road for Kirants. As for property issues, the volumes are small and the government will compensate in such situations.
REPORTER: What about Baghanis, Berkaber, and Voskepar?
PASHINYAN OFFICE: The most sensitive topic in Voskepar was the fate of the church, and on the Voskepar-Baghanis section, it was the Soviet-era road. Both issues received the best resolution: the road is fully within Armenia and so is the church, and the border line is quite far from the road and the church. As for Berkaber, there were no such sensitive topics.
REPORTER: When will the sides deploy border guards?
PASHINYAN OFFICE: Within 8-9 days, and a bit later in the 3 sensitive areas of Kirants after further clarifications. //
On Thursday, PM Nikol Pashinyan spoke about the May 15 border commission.
PASHINYAN: This is a major success for two reasons: (1) A very important cornerstone was placed for the future development of Armenia as an independent and sovereign state, (2) for the first time since independence, we have an officially delimited border, which will significantly increase the level of stability and security in that section and along the entire border. I'd like to thank the border commission leader Deputy PM Mher Grigoryan and all members, and every member of the National Security Council.
I'll provide further details. As you recall from the May 15 statement, it says the borders are delimited based on the 1976 maps that underwent the legal procedures in 1979. As you know, our principle was to reproduce the existing border with de jure power instead of drawing a new one. To accomplish this, we made a reference to the 1991 Almaty Declaration in the April 19 agreement, and it became the basis for the entire delimitation process. On May 15 we specified the 1976 maps; these are the most up-to-date USSR maps with de jure power.
In USSR, a map could be granted a de jure power by a special state agency that collected maps and legal processes and verified their accuracy and legitimacy before confirming the administrative border of Soviet republics. In the area where these delimitations are taking place, in 1979 this USSR state agency verified the 1976 map and it's the most recent map with de jure power.
This was a very important principle for us. We must accept wherever this border passes through. If we chose to draw new borders, that would create a ground for future military conflicts and escalations. The ongoing process, which should not be underestimated or overestimated, abides by the principle of adhering to the legal border and significantly reduces or eliminates possible escalations. This agreement was a major success.
Berkaber: there were no issues here.
Baghanis & Voskepar: at first we thought that some issues could arise here, around the church and, as the locals say, the "old road". If you've ever been there you have seen this road sign, when you pass Baghanis, the sign warns you that the road is being observed [under Azeri scope] and it was not advised to use this road during tense periods. Now, as a result of border delimitation, this road is not only confirmed within Armenia, but it will be safer for travel as a result of the new circumstances [border guards replacing the militarized armed forces, less dispute = less conflicts]. As for the church, we don't have a problem here because the border passes significantly further away from it.
So to recap, we recorded no problems in Berkaber, Baghanis, and Voskepar because we chose to follow the de jure border line and we did so. Following this principle is also why we will have certain problems in Kirants because we don't want to draw an entirely new border. We must use this principle for the entire AM-AZ border, with no exceptions. Not only we are creating a precedence for delimitation, but also a formula to be used for the future entire delimitation process and to make it predictable. If parties decide to make mutual concessions in certain areas, we could discuss the launch of legislative processes to authorize them, but for now, we have agreed on a principle to be used for the entire AM-AZ border. On each section of the border, we will use the most recent USSR maps that hold de jure power.
MHER GRIGORYAN: On May 15 the border commissions also discussed the Regulation and it appears we have an agreement to reflect these principles in the Regulation. Efforts are underway to prepare the Regulation. Azerbaijan wants to continue the border delimitation with the same framework and algorithm used thus far.
PASHINYAN: We should implement the reached agreements in full within 8-10 days. The border guards were deployed in Baghanis-Voskepar around 10 days ago. They were deployed alongside the installation of the white border markers. They are currently studying the terrain to launch the permanent service there. The same will be done in other sections.

He engaged in an argument with a protester from another region who came to Kirants to block the road. The MP complained that blocking the road is what Azeris would want.
The MP also engaged with an activist-reporter from an opposition outlet who was covering the road blockings. The MP accused the reporter of "having bad intentions" and of "manipulations". The activist-reporter accused the MP of having secret ties with Pashinyan during an intense yelling match. "Great speech. You call yourself a journalist?", rhetorically asked the opposition MP.
ARF leaders responded saying their MP was not speaking/acting on behalf of the party.

In related news. The protesters pressured the mayor of Kirants who gave an interview last week and admitted that the delimitation went much better than he expected. On Thursday he offered to resign from his position during a confrontation with an opposition media outlet reporter who was unhappy about the mayor's positive portrayal of the delimitation process.

If the refugee has an active mortgage loan taken in Armenia, let's say taken in 2016, each family member will receive ֏2 million towards that mortgage. So if you have a family of 6 [Nagorno-Karabakh families are often larger than Armenia-based families], you receive $31,000 to pay off your mortgage.
On the other hand, our brothers and sisters from Nagorno-Karabakh who are well-off and already own a house without an outstanding mortgage balance, won't receive assistance because the goal of this program is to help those who don't have a house.
PASHINYAN: So that's roughly a $2 billion investment program in Armenia. Also, by becoming citizens of Armenia to take advantage of this housing program, the refugees won't lose any refugee rights or privileges, and they will not lose the ongoing monthly cash [40+10] assistance programs.
FINANCE MINISTER: We have launched a new line in the migration services to handle the expected uptick in applications in the coming months so people won't face long lines. The passport departments in provinces will begin to handle citizenship applications just for refugees; today this is only possible in Yerevan.

It's about expanding trade, green energy, investment, as well as transport and digital infrastructure in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.
2021 was a harmful year for Sevan because of unprecedented heat waves. In June 2021 there was an evaporation of 153M m3 water, which was a historical high, while the precipitation on the surface was only 4.8M m3, which was 4x lower than the previous historical low [WTF?]. Also, the river flow was at 40%. As a result of all this, instead of the usual 7 cm increase for June, we observed a 10 cm decline.
This year the conditions have been much better. We are finally back to the May 2021 levels. The rains filled it up from above, and the Arpa-Sevan tunnel from below the rocks. This tunnel has already brought 89M m3 this year, which is 2x more than last year.
Another contributing factor is the reduced reliance on Sevan for irrigation because the agricultural fields are still wet. Last year we had to tap into Sevan starting May 14. This year the government hasn't even summoned a meeting to authorize a release of water.
The 5 largest reservoirs currently hold 605M m3, up by 240M. Only the Aparan reservoir is lacking. In Ketchut reservoir the water is above the famous "flowers" (margaritka). This is the first time in 5 years that the water is above the margaritkas. When the water rises above margaritkas, it drops down and flows into Lake Sevan. Overall, 90% of the water entering Sevan is wasted by evaporation.

Gegham Nazaryan, a father of a fallen soldier and an opposition MP who - unlike his colleagues - doesn't always engage in toxic exchanges with the ruling party, decided to visit the border village Kirants, where he asked the road blockers to open it.He engaged in an argument with a protester from another region who came to Kirants to block the road. Armenian government approves a $2 billion permanent housing assistance program for Nagorno-Karabakh refugees; rollout in stages
SOCIAL MINISTRY: We need to provide long-term housing to allow the forcefully displaced persons to socially and economically integrate into Armenia. The program has three components: (1) Obtaining a house or an apartment with a subsidy, (2) building a house with a subsidy, (3) subsidizing the mortgage if the refugee has already purchased a house.... The size of the subsidy varies depending on the geographical location and the size of the family
(1) ֏5 million ($12,900) per family member to obtain housing in one of the 242 towns or villages.(2) ֏4 million ($10,300) per family member to obtain housing in one of 148 towns or villages.

OFFICIAL: As of May, the level was 1900.46, which is 2 cm higher than the 2021 mark and 29 cm higher than January 1.2021 was a harmful year for Sevan because of unprecedented heat waves. In June 2021 there was an evaporation of 153M m3 water, which was a historical high, while the precipitation on the surface was only 4.8M m3, which was 4x lower than the previous historical low [WTF?]. Also, the river flow was at 40%. As a result of all this, instead of the usual 7 cm increase for June, we observed a 10 cm decline.
This year the conditions have been much better. We are finally back to the May 2021 levels. The rains filled it up from above, and the Arpa-Sevan tunnel from below the rocks. This tunnel has already brought 89M m3 this year, which is 2x more than last year.
Another contributing factor is the reduced reliance on Sevan for irrigation because the agricultural fields are still wet. Last year we had to tap into Sevan starting May 14. This year the government hasn't even summoned a meeting to authorize a release of water.
The 5 largest reservoirs currently hold 605M m3, up by 240M. Only the Aparan reservoir is lacking. In Ketchut reservoir the water is above the famous "flowers" (margaritka). This is the first time in 5 years that the water is above the margaritkas. When the water rises above margaritkas, it drops down and flows into Lake Sevan. Overall, 90% of the water entering Sevan is wasted by evaporation.

I usually mix these colors. I'm the kinda guy that wears dress pants and dress shoes during cold weather and moccasins+shorts during warm weather. And I always wear short sleeved shirts, pretty colorful (think hawaiian style, small watermelon patterns, etc. No blank/simple shirts, never). Now onto my 2 questions.
I mainly like Jordans mid and Dunks high as far as I've researched. I don't really like lows, they look pretty much like regular sneakers. I attached two pictures for reference, this is what I was thinking I could get. I mainly look for a pair that has some brown/cream variety and something with dark blue preferably, but these light blue/cream mix look nice (pictures attached for reference). I've been doing mental backflips over the last week or so.
I was about to type out a youtube comment to Jordan Peterson explaining that he should check out this doco, I still don't know why, it's not my business, you can read the comment below if you like, but what I'd like to ask is:
Do you have a anon identity online?
Is the person you portray online the same as the you in reality?
Do you find yourself being carried away by this online identity? if so how?
If you can't stop yourself, what kind of struggles do you go through on a daily basis?
as in does this have an affect on your day to day life?
Do you believe that your actions online effect reality?
I'm probably inviting the wrong kind of attention, but what the hell, I'm interested in this and going to give it a go.

I don't even know where to get started. I'm mainly writing to get everything off my chest in a community of folks who may or may not have had similar experiences in the past or present. I'd also like to add that creepy, unexplainable things have always happened around me since I was a little kid. So, here it goes:
I moved into my apartment in September 2023. I've always felt comfortable and calm in my home. Besides my usual nightmares (always had them, generally not too scary), everything was copacetic. Either at the very end of December or January 2024, things started getting weird.
It's important to note I live alone in a 1 bedroom apartment. The first time something happened, I was sound asleep and was awoken to 3 knocks on my bedroom door at 3 am. I usually slept with the bedroom door open and just started closing it at night. It was loud and deliberate. I just told myself I'd imagined it and while I was very scared, I drifted back off to sleep. The next day I was on the phone with my sister and told her what happened. Out of curiosity I knocked on my bedroom door and it was the exact same sound.
Over the next few months I heard 3 knocks at my bedroom door, bathroom, or front door around 3 am, 1 am, or 11 pm. I even had a friend visit in March and he was awoken to 3 knocks at the front door at 1 am. Around this time is the first time I heard my daughter's 7-8 year old voice say "Mom?" next to my bed then again a couple weeks later behind me at the head of the bed. My daughter is 12 and lives full time with her dad, so I knew and told myself "that isn't my daughter". I also expierenced what sounded like claw scratches across my stand up heater across each metal section (looks like a radiator) when I was fully awake laying down in bed. Another time I was in bed and for a couple seconds smelt sulfur next to my bed and got up and left my bedroom. After this I took my first actions.
I have a favorite tarot readepsychic I found on (a popular social media app I can't type because it isn't allowed) last year when he was first starting out doing free readings. I was on his live the night after hearing my daughter and asked him and the 13 other people in the live for advice. Him and a few people suggested burning sage (I cannot because it would set off the smoke alarms in the building). Next suggested using sage incense, making loud claps all over the apartment, in the nooks and crannies, to break up energy and get it moving throughout the apartment. Lastly, to open a window and ask whatevewhoever is they to please leave through that designated window. I couldn't find sage incense at Walmart so I got a plug in wax warmer and picked up palo santo/sage wax melts. I went home and did the ritual and I didn't have disturbances for 3 weeks.
During this time, I started leaving the bathroom light on with the door cracked, the bedroom door cracked, and the kitchen light on in the kitchen every night and slept with my winter hat with the top open for my hair as a face mask. Cut to Sunday night, I was woken up to the sound of wooden "pop!" hit the floor, like a staff or the wooden end of a broomstick next to my bed. I thought it was time to get up to go over to get my daughter up for school, but noticed it was completely dark outside. I had my hat over my eyes and told myself to stay calm and rolled over to pretend like I went back to sleep. A few minutes pass and I hear it again and this time feel the vibration on the floor (I sleep on an air mattress on the floor). I ignore it, then it happens 2 times in a row, I keep ignoring it, then it happens another 2 or 3 times in a row. I jump up and say "fuck this shit!" and dash to my living room, grab my purse, shoes, and leave my phone. When I got to the bottom floor I noticed it was 12:15 am. I slept over at my ex-fiances on the couch because I was so scared.
I go back to my apartment Monday night and start hearing a loud wooden "pop!" noise like when a house settles, but live in a concrete building and never heard it before. I was on the phone with a friend until midnight and kept hearing the loud crack/pop noise in the bedroom, kitchen, bathroom every 5-10 minutes for around 2 hours. I fell asleep on my papazon chair (ouch) because I was nervous about sleeping in my bedroom again and was woken to another pop at 2 am. I decided to just bite the bullet and fell asleep on my bed, but woke up every half hour or so, but no disturbances that I noticed. I left my apartment at 5:50 to get my daughter up.
I get back home at about 7am and decide I needed to take a nap from not getting a lot of sleep the last couple days and doze off at about 8 am. I was awoken at about 9 am to what sounded like a loud flick against the air mattress and I felt it, said "nope" and went to lay down (in a ball) on the papzon chair. I was woken up to the loud flick of the air mattress twice, then was awake and heard it again (like flick and air mattress moved). I decided I was leaving, packed up, wen to the bathroom and heard the same sound of the air mattress moving, got in my car and drove to my Dad's a hour in a half away, in part to see him, but mostly to get away from my apartment.
I'm still here now. I've told this all to my friend, sister, and Dad every step of the way and yesterday my therapist and peer support in detail. I'm nervous about being back at my apartment. I have so much fear in my heart and am just scared. I checked with my apartment manager today and no one has died in my apartment in the past. I called a local Catholic Church and left a voicemail with a preist to call me for guidance and hopefully meet up and discuss coming to my apartment with me. I have always been non-religous, but am open to anything at this point.
It's worth noting that I was having horrible, disgusting, wicked thoughts that were so bad I cannot tell anyone what they are because I don't want to be arrested when the disturbances started escalating.
Has anyone had similar experiences? How did you get them to stop? Do you now feel safe and secure in your home? Are you still living with (whatever) today?
Edit: I will not be checking this post while I'm at my apartment so fear of stirring up whatever is there. So my responses might be far between.

 | So... this was a wild weekend we all just watched. We saw Revenant AND NAVI fail to qualify this month from APAC, a lot of drama happening over in the EMEA region, we FINALLY saw the top South American team get signed and we played some fun Brawl Stars quizzes over at Reddy's stream during the NA Qualifiers. submitted by Lucky_6464 to BrawlStarsEsports [link] [comments] I would also like to point out that I am not responsible for any jinxing that may have happened this past weekend. No I won't be talking much about the drama that happened this past weekend. If you want to see more about it, I'm sure there are some posts on here or tweets that talk about it more in depth. I just want to talk about the Qualifiers and nothing else. Now that I got that out of the way, let's talk about what happened in the BSC 2024 May Monthly Qualifiers! The Thumbnail! APAChttps://preview.redd.it/8t2d2425cv0d1.png?width=960&format=png&auto=webp&s=3f85ea0c33a8ac52251f6c4645bafdde3279ce9dCrazy Raccoon: This time Crazy Raccoon were able to get a nice run in the Monthly Qualifiers after getting sent to Losers last month. Only dropping one set, this Japanese team is looking to claim their 2nd Monthly Final crown of the year and all but secure a spot for the World Finals. With teams like Revenant and NAVI not standing in their way this time, there is a good chance they can repeat. However with how much chaos that has happened this month, I guess anything is still possible. Still should be the favorites to win it all though. Rival Esports: The newly signed trio in Rival have somehow made their way to the Monthly Finals from Winners after getting a huge upset against NAVI to qualify. Rival will hopefully take advantage of there being no NAVI or Revenant this month, but they will have to go through a tough bracket as I think Why We Lose could be tougher than we all might think and Angelic with that ping advantage might be tricky to beat. If they at least make it to the Grand Finals, they should be in a good position to play in at least the LCQ assuming they keep qualifying. Angelic: Little to no scrim time? No problem! At least for Angelic as they were able to cruise through the Winners Bracket and never once had to deal with a tough opponent as HOW were unsuccessful in being able to play them. Angelic are looking to take advantage of there being no Revenant or NAVI this month and there is a good chance they could get a bigger lead on them and even Rival is they out-place them this month. If there was a time for the Hong Kong group to win, it's now. Coco Loco: This Coco team is going Loco as they were able to qualify from Winners thanks to Revenant choking against Team S2. While they were able to beat Team S2 in a close match, they still have some work to do as they ended up getting matched with 3RG who could be challenging for them. Despite the slow start they had, they are slowly climbing their way back up in the rankings and now might have a chance to stay in the LCQ race as long as things go their way. We'll see if they can get another MF match win this month! Master Entertainer: A new team has joined the Monthly Finals and their journey was quite interesting to say the least. Their bracket was going well until they faced Rival who would send them to Losers. Luckily, bracket RNG was on their side and while they did have a close call in one of their matches, it was pretty much smooth sailing the rest of the way. Now will hopefully be their chance to cause some chaos as they go up against Crazy Raccoon. It will be challenging, but from what we have seen so far this year, anything is possible. Team S2: The 2nd S team has arrived and they should definitely not be taken lightly despite this being their first Monthly Final. Their run was going well in Winners and they somehow managed to beat Revenant 2-0 in the process. Coco Loco would send them to Losers after a tough loss, but they would still just need one win to qualify. Their match against Octopus Primes wasn't easy, but they pulled through and will now get a chance to also cause some chaos. Can this Korean team stun us all and add Angelic to their list of top teams they've beaten this month? 3R Gaming: 3RG had a pretty easy road in the Winners Bracket, but they were unfortunately matched with Crazy Raccoon in the qualifying match. I think you could guess what happened there. What's even worse is that they got placed in the same section as Revenant and Nai Dug in Losers. Nai Dug were somehow victorious in their match against Revenant (yes RNT placed Top 16), but they were no match for 3RG had came out on top in a three set victory. Now they'll get a chance to climb their way back into the LCQ race, but their bracket ain't gonna be easy as they will have to go through Coco Loco and Raccoon. Why We Lose: After getting sent to the Losers Bracket early, WWL managed to get on a nice streak which also ended with them getting a win against HOW. Their next match was a close one and while they were able to win, NAVI was their next opponent and beating them would mean they would qualify. I think you can guess what happened. They somehow defeated the April Champions and sent them packing. While this was a brutal loss for NAVI and it hurting their chances to claim a Worlds spot, WWL is looking to cause some more chaos in APAC as they could stun us all and beat Rival. May Asia Pacific Monthly Finals Bracket Quarterfinal Match to Watch - Rival Esports VS. Why We Lose: I think WWL has the potential to upset Rival this month. I don't know why, but I just have a gut feeling that WWL is underrated. They do have a solid trio who did manage to take out the defending champs, but so did Rival in Winners. This is the only matchup I could honestly see end in a close battle with maybe CL VS. 3RG being a contender. At this time I would still lean towards Rival, but we'll see what the scrims will have to say about that. EMEAMay EMEA Monthly Qualifiers ResultsF/A Jordan 4's: This trio of players were literally assembled 24 hours before the qualifiers started, yet somehow they not only managed to qualify directly to Winners, but they also beat arguably the best team in the region in SK Gaming (they didn't even drop a set). Despite all the drama surrounding this team with Decaii getting perma banned, they were able to pick up Blaksxy who will likely be filling in for him. Also glad to see Buzko playing in his first Monthly Final, but I did not expect it to be with this FA roster. Can they beat Reverso though? Oceanus Gaming: Three Monthly Qualifiers, zero set losses so far. It was honestly a breeze for Oceanus as they never really had to play a super difficult opponent once. Didn't even have to face BC* who were sent to Losers early. A clean bracket for these group, but unfortunately they did not get lucky with the MF bracket RNG as their first opponent will be against HMBLE. This is likely a do or die moment for Oceanus and losing here would hurt them a bit, but luckily for them ZETA & SK will be playing each other in the Quarterfinals so they'll still have a chance even if they lose to HMBLE. Reply Totem: Totem is back and honestly about damn time. Totem were able to find their form again this month and even managed to beat HMBLE to qualify directly from Winners. While SK did qualify from the Losers Bracket, they were thankfully not paired up with them this time. Instead they got an opponent who will be playing in their first Monthly Final this year in Ladder>Skill. If Totem somehow don't beat them though next week, I might start doubting them again. Please just win one match on the big stage. ZETA DIVISION: Hold on let me put on my surprised face real quick. Wow ZETA qualified from Winners again? That's so crazy! Who could've seen this coming? But for real though this is pretty good for ZETA as they were able to easily qualify directly from Winners and managed to beat Eclipsar in the process. ZETA will be looking to defend their Monthly Final crown and try to win a second straight. They were paired up with SK in their first match, but if they win that they should be golden for a Grand Finals spot. It's never easy winning multiple in the most competitive region, but these guys make it look easy. Will they win another Monthly Final and almost all but guarantee a spot in Worlds? Ladder>Skill: Before I get into anything I just want to say congrats on this team winning against all odds and qualifying for the Monthly Finals for the first time together. This is truly an accomplishment for them and I wish them nothing but the best this weekend against Totem. Now on to the situation, I'll say is that this was very unfortunate for BC that they had to go out like that. A bug ending their chances of qualifying this month and now made it anyones race to claim that final LCQ spot, that's brutal. All you can do now is just hope things work in your favor in the final two months of the season. Treat every game like it could be your last and give it your all moving forward. That's all I'll say about the situation. Reverso Gaming EU: Ay another new team has joined the Monthly Finals! And it's another Italian group too! From what I have heard about them, this group managed to claw their way through the Qualifiers and somehow managed to upset FUT Esports and sent them to Losers. While they weren't able to take down Jordans in the following round, they were able to secure a win against AoF in their Qualifying Match. The bracket RNG gods blessed them with this qualification and they blessed them again by giving them a rematch against Jordan. They were close against them last time so I think they could maybe stand a chance. SK Gaming: Losing to Jordan early in the bracket meant that they would likely have to go through a gauntlet of tough teams in the Losers Bracket as they would have to go up against two solid teams in FUT and Eclipsar. Wait hold on scratch that. I meant Eclipsar and Pale Fox who somehow upset FUT in Losers Top 24 (I watched that match on Teddie's stream and it was insane). PFE did give SK a run for their money, but SK were able to pull through in the end. Eclipsar were no match for them either and that's how they somehow managed to qualify despite all of that happening. Now they'll have to go up against... ZETA. Man they bracket RNG gods were not kind at all this month. HMBLE: This was a decent month for HMBLE overall I'd say. While they weren't able to defeat Totem in their Winners Qualifying Match, they were able to secure an easy opponent for them to qualify from Losers. All was going well until it was revealed they would be going up against Oceanus. And possibly going against Totem in the following round if they beat them. Man can HMBLE ever catch a break this year? First coming up short in the previous two Grand Finals and now this. I will say if they manage to win it all this month, this will be the team to beat the rest of the season. Will their bracket be too much for them to handle, or will we hold a funeral for Symantec's table after he chops it in half with his might fist? May EMEA Monthly Finals Bracket Quarterfinal Match to Watch - ZETA DIVISION VS. SK Gaming: It was either this matchup or Oceanus VS. HMBLE and I think we can all agree that a battle between the two teams that have won a Monthly Final so far this year deserves to be in the MUST WATCH section. The fact that this is a Quarterfinals Match of all things is very wild and bold of the BSC admins, but hey that just means that both teams gotta give it their all if they want to possibly all but secure a Worlds spot this year. The winner likely plays in Grands too as their next round opponents should be easy for both of them. The loser of this match should still be in the Worlds race, but it might be harder to directly qualify with there being two more Monthly Finals after this one. South AmericaMay South America Monthly Qualifiers ResultsCalabresos F/A: This team has yet to lose a single match so far this season as they were able to easily cruise through their bracket without really breaking much of a sweat. Some more good news for them is that their bracket does look pretty easy up until the Grand Finals which is good for them since it means they'll be getting closer to claiming that Worlds spot sooner than we had expected. Calabresos were also recently signed by Spacestation Gaming who dropped their NA roster due to... reasons I won't talk about here, but hey glad to see these guys get signed finally. Team Queso: Things have been going pretty well for TQ so far this month. They managed to breeze their way through an easy bracket up until they had to face Marruecos. It was a close battle, but TQ would come out on top in the end and qualify from Winners. Their LCQ hopes remain pretty hopeful as not only were they able to get a newcomer in the BSC Monthly Finals scene, but one of the teams they were competing with in SKC failed to qualify. If there was a time to give it their all, it'd be this month as a deep run could put them in a good position to take an LCQ spot. F/A MiniPekkas: The MiniPekkas had no trouble in the Qualifiers as they managed to not drop a single set the entire qualifier which included a win against UDP in their final Qualifier match. They will be playing against UDP again in their first match of the Monthly Finals, but they are looking pretty good as of late to the point where I think if they go on a deep run this season, they should be able to at least secure an LCQ spot thanks to SKC not qualifying. Reis Do PL: RDP got pretty lucky they weren't able to face SKC in their bracket. They did have to take on Olimpo who was a bit of a challenge, but they managed to pull through and won the following match against CFZ to qualify. Now they'll have to go up against Marruecos who will finally get to show who they really are after playing against Calabresos in the previous two Monthly Finals. This will be a crucial Monthly Final for RDP as a win would keep their LCQ hopes alive. Marruecos: Marruecos had a pretty easy bracket to start off as nobody was super challenging for them up until the final Winners Match against Queso. It was a hard fought battle, but they came up just short and had to survive SKC in their Losers match. SKC forfeited their first Winners match and had to go on a deep Losers run in order to survive, but after a back and forth battle, Marruecos came out on top in the end and sent SKC home packing early. This win definitely helped Marruecos and their chance of claiming an LCQ spot. While they might have to face RDP in the Quarterfinals, at least they don't have to deal with Calabresos again. Olimpo Squad: Olimpo had to go through a somewhat deep Losers run after losing against RDP in a close match. Luckily they were able to breeze through their next two matches after that and while their match against Blue lock was super close with every set ending in three games, Olimpo came out on top and qualified. Now Olimpo will have to take on the best team in the region as their first opponent in the Monthly Finals. While it might be tough for them to beat, from what we have seen in BSC this year, anything is possible. Mochilas: Another new team has arrived in the South America Monthly Finals and it's a Brazilian team I'm not super familiar with. Looking at their bracket though, it seems they were able to beat Level who made it to the Monthly Finals last month, but they were quickly shut down by Blue lock in the match after that. While they did have to win three Losers matches to qualify, it wasn't super difficult for them as Mochilas managed to win three straight only having issues in one match during that run. Now Mochilas will be facing Queso in their first Monthly Finals together which will certainly be their toughest challenge yet. Urubus Do Pix: A pretty good showing for UDP overall as this Brazilian team had little to no trouble up until their final two matches of the Qualifiers. A loss against the MiniPekkas in the Winners bracket still put them in a win and in scenario, but UDP were able to secure a win against Arranca Diu in a close three set victory. Now they'll be out to get revenge as they will play the MiniPekkas in a rematch in their first Monthly Finals match. May South America Monthly Finals Bracket Quarterfinal Match to Watch - Reis Do PL VS. Marruecos: To me this is the matchup I think that will be the most crucial one for both teams on their quest to claim an LCQ spot. RDP has shown they can take on the best in this region as they almost beat the MiniPekkas last month while Marruecos despite a slow start, have shown they are capable of beating good teams like SKC as well. The winner of this match keeps their LCQ hopes alive for now while the loser might have to rely on a miracle in order to qualify. This should be a good one to watch that will likely get put on the B Stream. North AmericaMay North America Monthly Qualifiers ResultsCT Esports: The former Spacestation roster minus RBM & toast have teamed up with rookie Evex to see if they could maybe keep their LCQ hopes alive since they were able to secure their points from the previous two months. Well, they somehow managed to breeze through the Winners bracket up until their match against Tribe. It was a close contest between these two teams, but CTE managed to pull through in the end in a massive upset. Things keep on getting better for them as the bracket RNG gods blessed them and gave them Homeless as their first match. We'll see how good this group can play on the big stage and I can't wait to see Evex play next weekend. West Coast FA: West Coast introduced a new member to the team in Jheart after cutting Shine from the group, but that didn't stop them from dominating their section of the bracket. They did actually manage to struggle in two of their final three matches going up against the former DC Team with toast on it and Complexity, but they prevailed and a sweep against the Oinkers would clinch them a Monthly Finals spot from Winners. Now they'll have to go up against Luminosity who should be a challenge for this group, but we'll see if they'll be able to get their first Monthly Final match win of the season. Juan Carlos Team: The recently signed JCT group now with a solid staff managed to prove why they are now considered a serious contender for a Worlds spot this year. They were not dropping a single set all the way up to their final match where they managed to beat Luminosity in a three set victory to qualify. Everything went their way this qualifier and things ended up getting better as they will be facing a Motomamis team dealing with ping issues in their first match. We'll see if they can continue this win streak next weekend and we'll see which new org ended up signing them next week as well. STMN: After falling just short of a Monthly Finals crown, STMN got back to work in this qualifier and did not disappoint whatsoever as they easily climbed their way through the Winners side dealing with only one small bump along the road in Motomamis. Unfortunately for STMN, they have to deal with an even bumpier road this month as they will likely be getting a challenging opponent no matter who they face in each round. Their first opponent being Tribe whom they will be facing off in a competitive setting in about a year. This will be crucial for STMN as a win here will keep their Worlds hopes alive while a loss could mean they would have to start from the LCQ... if they even make it there that is. Luminosity: After failing to qualify last month due to Patchy being absent, Luminosity did manage to come back a bit stronger. While they did fall to JCT in their Winners qualifying match, they would end up having to face the Real Ones who were no trouble for them at all. Their bracket for the Monthly Finals though will be tough to get through and while their first opponent will be up against West Coast, their next match (if they win) will be tougher as they will have to get through either Tribe or STMN. Can they pick up the slack and go on a deep run to stay alive in the race to Worlds? Motomamis FA: This FA group with newly added player RBM managed to perform well in their first qualifier together. A solid showing overall only dropping one match and two sets the entire qualifier with their only losses being against STMN. While they were able to qualify by beating a decent NA group in IX Squares, they still have a lot of work to do against JCT in the Monthly Finals. With the ping disadvantage they'll have the entire tournament it certainly won't be easy, but hopefully having RBM on their team will be the saving grace they need to help keep it up in the race for a postseason spot. Tribe Gaming: A good start as always from Tribe, but things did end up taking an unexpected turn as Evex would finally end up beating Tribe under CTE and send Tribe to Losers after failing to do so back in March. While Tribe were able to easily qualify with a win over 512 the next day, the cracks are slowing showing as they have been struggling a bit lately against some of the better teams in NA. With a classic rivalry matchup against STMN coming up, Tribe will need to sharpen their axes and prepare themselves for a crucial battle in order to keep their lead on the NA leaderboards. Homeless: These Homeless players had a tough challenge ahead of them as they no longer had Steel nor Evex on their team. Luckily with the addition of a veteran player in Shine on their team, they were able to at least make some progress in Winners before losing to Luminosity in a close three set match. They then had to win three straight matches to qualify and luckily for them, they didn't have much issue with any of their opponents (except for maybe one team named Game Two Players). The Oinkers were no issue and we finally get to see tacos and Vegeta in their first Monthly Final, but I think Evex and CT Esports might want to put an end to their run next weekend. We'll see if Homeless can go from rags to riches in the Monthly Finals, but just like in real life it won't be easy. May North America Monthly Finals Bracket Quarterfinal Match to Watch - STMN VS. Tribe Gaming: The fact that this is a Quarterfinals match is just criminal, but hey we at least get to see a classic NA rivalry that we only saw once last year due to subregions. Tribe is looking to have a better month after getting upset by JCT last month while STMN is looking to stay alive in at least the LCQ race. A win for Tribe could mean STMN's chances of making Worlds will be near impossible and they will have to try for an LCQ spot, but a win for STMN (and maybe a deep run) could mean it would be anyones game to claim one of the Worlds spots. A crucial match for both teams and the winner of this match would have to likely go up against Luminosity which will definitely be fun to watch. Get your popcorn ready for the lower half of the bracket because it's definitely gonna be absolute cinema watching all four teams fighting for that Grand Finals spot. While this can halt your progress and lead to cycling around the same puzzles, it makes decryption much more satisfying. The game stubbornly sticks to its principles to the detriment of accessibility, however, losing yourself to the deep layers of intrigue makes this an unforgettable trip.

Just about every layer of the experience is creatively risky, from its fragmented narrative to its uncompromising barrage of challenges, but these gambles largely pay off to deliver something with purpose and direction. Crafting this kind of maze isn’t easy; it takes a combination of subtle guidance and faith in your audience. But despite these challenges, Simogo never loses sight of how to stoke curiosity about what’s lurking around the next corner, whether it’s a treasure you’ve been seeking or, conversely, something horrible lurking in the dark.
Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is a wonderfully intricate, amazing piece of game design. It's intimidating and challenging, but it rewards all the effort you put into it. One of the best games of 2024 so far.
To return to the start, there's still a lot to say about what this game is. It's equal parts literary and mathy. It's elusive but self-aware. It's romantic, in fits. It's something best played with pen and paper, even if it doesn't seem necessary for a while. It's a story told as fantasy, history, parable, and performance. It's Lorelei and the Laser Eyes. And it could very well be the best game that comes out this year.
Lorelei and the Lasers Eyes delivers challenging puzzles alongside a mystifying narrative. It successfully trains your brain to overanalyze, experiment, and ask questions. All hallmarks of an excellent puzzle game. I was frustrated by some technical design decisions that slowed the pace and led to unintentional errors, but still had a thoroughly good time working my way through this otherworldly puzzle box.
Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is a wonderful puzzle game shrouded in mistery, with a deep story about lost memories and the complexity of the mind.
You should just play Lorelei and the Laser Eyes instead of reading about it. I’ve never seen a game quite like it, and I can’t imagine I’ll see anything like it again anytime soon. It ticks all the boxes for a puzzle game that is just as intelligently and thoughtfully designed as it is atmospheric and fascinating, and I can’t recommend it enough.
Lorelei and the Laser Eyes isn’t a perfect game. It isn’t a game for everyone, and even fans of puzzle games like the Zero Escape series might find that this isn’t their tastes. In a world filled with Michael Bay, this is Luis Bunuel. It’s a game created with a distinct vision that isn’t out to please everyone. This isn't a game that cares about being liked by everyone: it cares about being loved by a smaller group. It’s a puzzle box where any narrative is almost an afterthought. It’s there, if you dig into it, but the greater satisfaction comes from finding a way forward.
David Lynch would be proud of Lorelei and the Laser Eyes. It's wild, clever and compelling in the best of ways, absurd in its visual style and challenging in its puzzles. Do not let this one pass you by.

"I can't find it," Brandon says, finally. But he's not going to be denied the opportunity to underline The Killers reinvention with a puff of smoke. "Let's go to the gas station. I'll have to buy one. It's too busy to talk here anyway."

Brandon's black (of course) Volkswagen Touraeg four-wheel drive is barrelling down West Flamingo Road into town. "I was a bell boy there," he says, pointing out of the driver's window at the stucco facade of the Gold Coast casino. "I was working there when we were signed."
Coming from Las Vegas, it is perhaps inevitable that casinos play a big part in The Killers' story; not only is Sam's Town named after one, it was recorded in one, too.
The band began writing songs while on the road with Hot Fuss, turning up early for soundchecks to run through new ideas. On a trip home to Vegas, George Maloof, a hotelier known for cultivating famous friends, invited them to record the album in the new studio he'd built at The Palms, his flagship hotel-cum-gambling den. When the tour finished in October 2005, they returned to Vegas and spent five month finessing the songs they'd sketched out on the road. Then, in February, they decampled to the third floor studio at The Palms and recorded Sam's Town over 11 weeks.
Producer Flood (U2, Depeche Mode) encouraged them to experiment. They overdubbed, fiddled with synthesizers and played with new equipment. It took them five weeks to get the backing vocals right. The band sang the harmonies, then double-tracked them four times. The end result recalls Queen wondering, "Is this is the real life? Is this just fantasy?" When Ronnie, a trained classical percussionist, brought some kettledrums down, eyebrows were raised; but the fabulously bombastic coda on Why Do I Keep Counting? vindicates his indulgence.
"That's kind of the Ben Hur of the album," he says. He's not wrong. Sam's Town is a record on an epic scale. "Yeah, it has drama," he continues. "But, at the same time, I think it's a little more exposed than Hot Fuss. It's a little more naked. Last time it was about a lot of fictional things." Brandon's taste in music is rabidly Anglophile - he constantly references The Smiths, The Cure and Joy Division - and it showed. By contrast, Sam's Town is an unequivocally American record. The lyrical imagery is pure American dream - cars, girls, wide-open spaces and escaping to a better life. "We're burning down the highway skyline/On the back of a hurricane that started turning/When you were young," sings Brandon on When You Were Young. That's the basis of the Springsteen comparisons then, though the lack of pathos more closely recalls another blue-collar rocker from New Jersey - Jon Bon Jovi.

"With the first record, there was this feeling that there was this world out there that we didn't know," says Mark later in the day. Before The Killers, he studied philosophy: now he's their quiet one. "We wanted to get out and away from this and be somewhere else. We hadn't had a lot of experience - hadn't travelled much - then we were gone for three years. We didn't sit down and say that we wanted to make a record about how we're glad to be home, but that's what happened naturally."
It's not an angsty record. The Killers have already escaped with Hot Fuss, and, having done so, they view the experience fondly now they're back. There's a mistiness to Brandon's eyes as he explains how the album got it's name.
"Sam's Town is a casino on the edge of Vegas," he says. "I grew up in Henderson, which is out on the way to the Hoover Dam. My mom and dad lived in a trailer park, and my dad used to hitchhike up and down Boulder Highway, which is the only way you could get to Vegas. Sam's Town was the first thing you saw on your way in to town. So, when you're driving down Boulder Highway from Henderson, I always thought you finally knew you were getting somewhere when you saw Sam's Town. It was kind of like a beacon."
"It's not a completely American album," contines Brandon. "We still have our English influence, but we're also from the Wild West. Somehow we've managed to unify all that on this album. it's just such a perfect resemblence of what we are."
At the petrol station, Brandon rummages through the glove box looking for change to buy a lighter. "This is a great album," he says, pointing at Highway Companion, the latest from iconic American rocker Tom Petty. "I've always been a big fan of his. He's such a great American artist."
Yes, Brandon: we get the point.

When Brandon finally lights his cigarette, he smokes it awkwardly, like a child mimicking something he's seen the grown-ups doing. However, when he cheerfully admits that, "I feel the same mentally as I did when I was 12," it's not a knowing nod to the fact that he sometimes behaves like a loveably precocious child, but a reference to an unusually comprehensive grounding in pop music at an early age.
When Brandon sings about "this town", he doesn't mean Las Vegas. He means Nephi, Utah or Henderson, Nevada, where he spent his childhood. His parents are Mormon and he is the youngest of six children. "I was a surprise," he says. "I've got a 42-year-old sister." If he was issues about his "surprise" status, he chooses to gloss over them. "It turned out perfect because my brother was a teenager when I was a kid," he says. "He would bring home things like Rattle And Hum by U2 and I would watch it. I remember he bought Live In Dallas by Morrissey. It was always him watching these things, or his door was shut and you'd hear The Head On The Door by The Cure blasting through the house and rattling the walls."
The Killers were formed when Brandon answered an advert Dave had placed in a local paper in late 2002. Dave cited Oasis as a big influence; Brandon had seen them play recently and responded; and, as Dave has said in previous interviews: "He was the only person to reply to my ad who wasn't a complete freak." However, the band was born in Brandon's brothers bedroom.
"His room was like a shrine," enthuses Brandon. "It was a holy place. I wish I could show you a picture of it. It was covered in posters. There'd be a big picture of Elvis wearing a bow tie that just said 'The Smiths' [the artwork for The Smiths 1987 single Shoplifters Of The World Unite]. You had The Cure wearing face paint [the artwork to The Cure's 1985 single In Between Days] - all that kind of stuff. I remember Morrissey being on the cover of the NME, with the halo [from 1985] - stuff like that. You just wanted to know about these people 'cause they were so cool. My brother seemed like such a cool person. But he was a teenager, so he wasn't going to be that nice to me, a kid."
Brandon was fascinated by his brother's collection of music, magazines and posters, but he was denied access to them - officially, at least. "I would sneak in," he says. "I knew he'd be angry if he found out, but I would go in as soon as he left the house." For a long time Brandon was too scared to actually play anything. "That didn't come 'til later. I just used to go in there because I liked it. Then I got to the point where I'd actually take a tape out and put it in. It took more guts to do that."
It was a life-changing moment. "I was ten and the first song I played was Sing Your Life by Morrissey. I remember dancing about to it."
The lyrics to Sing Your Life include the lines, "Sing your life/Just walk right up to the microphone/And name all the things that you love/All the things that you loathe." It's intriguing to wonder what Morrissey makes of the neophyte he inspired with these lines.
Eventually, Brandon inherited his brother's tape collection. "It was around the same time CDs started coming out in a big way. He started buying CDs and gave me his tapes. And that was it: it took off from there. I got a hundred of the best albums - all the New Order, all the Morrissey, all The Smiths, The Beatles. I started buying posters. I went to see The Cure in concert. It was just kind of a continuation of my brother. And it was nice because, though my parents were strict, they were already used to it from him. There was no, 'My dad doesn't understand me,' or any of that kind of stuff. My mum likes The Smiths."
Brandon was 13 and his favourite band was late-'70s/early-'80s American new wavers The Cars, and particularly their jaw-droppingly catchy 1979 single Just What I Needed.
"I wouldn't exist without that song," he says. "That was the one. I remember driving around with my mum when I was 13, and we're living in Nephi - a really small town - and I felt so cool when I put that song on. Like: 'I have something that none of these kids I'm going to middle school with tomorrow have.' That excitement is what music's about, isn't it? That's why I understand the mentality of people that don't like us because we've sold so many records. I used to like it when no one else knew about a band. So I get that - I do."

Brandon's first band was called Blush Response. It was never going to work out. Not because he refused to move to Los Angeles with them, but because he is utterly - comically - shameless. He's given to making outrageously boastful statements like: "It's not like the '60s, '70s and '80s now. There are only a few bands around that are really good, that just do it. I mean, there's what, five or six of us?"
For the record, in Brandon's estimation, those bands are Franz Ferdinand, Razorlight, The Strokes, The White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and, of course, The Killers.
"I don't want people to think I'm lumping myself with other people just to make us sound cool," he says. Really? It sort of sounds like you are. But he just steamrolls through it. "Yeah, but you know what I mean," he says, grinning at his own cheekiness. He's so disgracefully forward you can't help but laugh along with him - Oh you are awful, Brandon! But joking aside, The Killers are the most commercially successful of all the bands he mentions.
Later, back at the rehearsal space, the band run through Sam's Town at deafening volume in preparation for the forthcoming tour - first the US, then the world. The infectious, almost contagious, chorus of When You Were Young sounds fabulous, as do the U2-like guitars and Twin Peaks synths of Read My Mind. Meanwhile, Smile Like You Mean It and Somebody Told Me benefit from the newfound harder edge.
They somewhat heavy-handedly underline the new direction by playing Paranoid by Black Sabbath and Get It On by T Rex. That's the thing: The Killers are not a subtle band. Their songs are like a wet kiss from a girl who's a bit too drunk. They are big and brash, and not everyone loves them for it. Mr Brightside and Somebody Told Me might go down as well at hip nightclubs as they do on the festival circuit, but the DJs play them with the same guilty look they wear when playing a pop record.
"I hate that," says Brandon. "Like writing a song you can hum somehow cheapens it? It makes me think of this quote by Morrissey. Everybody knows how he read Oscar Wilde, Keats and Yates when he was growing up and that he wanted to be a writer. He was talking to this journalist who asked why he hadn't become a writer, and Morrissey said: 'What I do is more powerful than what you do because I can write down these words and you get it to a melody. How can you beat that?' I'm of the same opinion. I don't understand why a good melody that's memorable is a bad thing."
Being dismissed as pop particular aggrieves Ronnie. "When we first came out we got compared to Duran Duran all the time. Jesus Christ! We got a keyboard player now all of a sudden he's Nick Rhodes! Come on!"
"The people who criticise us for being too poppy don't get it," agrees Mark. "I think that's the problem with a lot of rock music. People are afraid to write a song any more. Either that or they can't. And that attitude hurts music in general. The best bands ever have all written great songs. You can still do it and do it intelligently and it can be original. This isn't a studio creation with a producer writing these songs for us. We're not Avril Lavigne, or something like that. We're a real band writing real songs, just like a punk band would do, except that we write pop songs."
You get the impression that The Killers knack for showboating pop hooks that border on vulgar is inextricably tied up with the brazen side of Brandon's personality. But while his ebullient charisma, not to mention the songs themselves, mitigates his outrageousness, there is a less attractive side to his ego. He has a combative streak. He can't resist taking pot shots at emo bands, notably Fall Out Boy, whith whom The Killers share an A&R man.
Has he heard how many emo kids it takes to change a light bulb? "No." None. They just sit in the dark and cry. It's a full 30 seconds before he stops laughing. When he does he admits: "Yeah, we've had problems with other bands. You know, when you walk in the room it's like..." He whistles the theme to The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. "We're like gangs."
And while the other members of the band are diplomatic on the subject of Brandon, you don't have to read too deeply between the lines to conclude that there have been internal issues, too.
"Some people will think Brandon's the big genius," says Dave, visibly bridling. "There are songs, such as Why Do I Keep Counting?, where he's written every note. But there are others, like When You Were Young, that were more of a collaboration - like Mr Brightside, where I had some of the music and Brandon came up with the lyrics. We always have arguments about who wrote what. The truth is that we all help in that process."
When asked how success affected them, Ronnie says: "There were certain things that needed adjusting. When you're on tour for two years, people can get a little needy. It doesn't help that you're surrounded by yes men and everybody's working for you. At times we've had to say, 'Who do you think you are?' to people. No one wears the trousers, but some people would like to. I think if it wasn't for the people in the band kicking each other in the ass... Let's just say there was some ass-kickin'."
It doesn't take a genius to work out whose ass needed kicking most often.

It's the following day and The Killers are back at their rehearsal space. The topic of discussion is what to wear in the video for Bones, the second single. It's a big deal: the director is Tim Burton. "I feel like Frank Sinatra when I sing it," announces Brandon. "With maybe a little bit of Morrissey and a little bit of Elvis, too."
Of course he does. But if securing the services of Tim Burton tells you one thing, it's that The Killers are about to get even bigger, perhaps even make the leap to the same level as Coldplay et al. Already stars, they are about to become superstars. Brandon can hardly wait.
"Do you know that Rolling Stone didn't want to put us on the cover last time," he says indignantly. "They didn't think we were stars. We sold five million albums! What more do they want from a band?"
Whatever was required, Brandon would be happy to do most things. "I'll do stuff that some people don't want to do, 'cause I want people to hear the music," he says. However, even he has limits. "The Rolling Stone thing made the record label think: 'What can we do to make them stars?' If I go on vacation with my wife, do they have to send somebody to be there to take pictures of me? Is that how you become a star? I don't want that. I walked down the red carpet one time and I realised I don't like it. But you don't have to walk down the red carpet for people to hear your music. We do still have some of that indie blood running through our veins."
He heads off at a tangent: "When you walk around Liverpool, you think of The Beatles, or you go to Manchester and you think of The Smiths or Oasis. I want you to come to Las Vegas and think of Sam's Town. And I think we've started to capture that, which is a truer version of The Killers, 'cause that's where we're from."
He pauses.
"I used to live across the street from Sam's Town. Maybe it'll be like our Abbey Road where people go to take pictures."
Is that what he'd like?
"I wouldn't mind it," he says, desperately hoping it will come true.
He puts a cigarette between his lips, looks down at his trouser pockets and pats them in search of the lighter he bought yesterday.

His parents are Mormon and he is the youngest of six children. "I was a surprise," he says. "I've got a 42-year-old sister." If he was issues about his "surprise" status, he chooses to gloss over them. "It turned out perfect because my brother was a teenager when I was a kid," he says. "He would bring home things like Rattle And Hum by U2 and I would watch it. I remember he bought Live In Dallas by Morrissey. It was always him watching these things, or his door was shut and you'd hear The Head On The Door by The Cure blasting through the house and rattling the walls."
The Killers were formed when Brandon answered an advert Dave had placed in a local paper in late 2002. Dave cited Oasis as a big influence; Brandon had seen them play recently and responded; and, as Dave has said in previous interviews: "He was the only person to reply to my ad who wasn't a complete freak." However, the band was born in Brandon's brothers bedroom.
"His room was like a shrine," enthuses Brandon. "It was a holy place. I wish I could show you a picture of it. It was covered in posters. There'd be a big picture of Elvis wearing a bow tie that just said 'The Smiths' [the artwork for The Smiths 1987 single Shoplifters Of The World Unite]. You had The Cure wearing face paint [the artwork to The Cure's 1985 single In Between Days] - all that kind of stuff. I remember Morrissey being on the cover of the NME, with the halo [from 1985] - stuff like that. You just wanted to know about these people 'cause they were so cool. My brother seemed like such a cool person. But he was a teenager, so he wasn't going to be that nice to me, a kid."
Brandon was fascinated by his brother's collection of music, magazines and posters, but he was denied access to them - officially, at least. "I would sneak in," he says. "I knew he'd be angry if he found out, but I would go in as soon as he left the house." For a long time Brandon was too scared to actually play anything. "That didn't come 'til later. I just used to go in there because I liked it. Then I got to the point where I'd actually take a tape out and put it in. It took more guts to do that."
It was a life-changing moment. "I was ten and the first song I played was Sing Your Life by Morrissey. I remember dancing about to it."
The lyrics to Sing Your Life include the lines, "Sing your life/Just walk right up to the microphone/And name all the things that you love/All the things that you loathe." It's intriguing to wonder what Morrissey makes of the neophyte he inspired with these lines.
Eventually, Brandon inherited his brother's tape collection. "It was around the same time CDs started coming out in a big way. He started buying CDs and gave me his tapes. And that was it: it took off from there. I got a hundred of the best albums - all the New Order, all the Morrissey, all The Smiths, The Beatles. I started buying posters. I went to see The Cure in concert. It was just kind of a continuation of my brother. And it was nice because, though my parents were strict, they were already used to it from him. There was no, 'My dad doesn't understand me,' or any of that kind of stuff. My mum likes The Smiths."
Brandon was 13 and his favourite band was late-'70s/early-'80s American new wavers The Cars, and particularly their jaw-droppingly catchy 1979 single Just What I Needed.
"I wouldn't exist without that song," he says. "That was the one. I remember driving around with my mum when I was 13, and we're living in Nephi - a really small town - and I felt so cool when I put that song on. Like: 'I have something that none of these kids I'm going to middle school with tomorrow have.' That excitement is what music's about, isn't it? That's why I understand the mentality of people that don't like us because we've sold so many records. I used to like it when no one else knew about a band. So I get that - I do."

Brandon's first band was called Blush Response. It was never going to work out. Not because he refused to move to Los Angeles with them, but because he is utterly - comically - shameless. He's given to making outrageously boastful statements like: "It's not like the '60s, '70s and '80s now. There are only a few bands around that are really good, that just do it. I mean, there's what, five or six of us?"
For the record, in Brandon's estimation, those bands are Franz Ferdinand, Razorlight, The Strokes, The White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and, of course, The Killers.
"I don't want people to think I'm lumping myself with other people just to make us sound cool," he says. Really? It sort of sounds like you are. But he just steamrolls through it. "Yeah, but you know what I mean," he says, grinning at his own cheekiness. He's so disgracefully forward you can't help but laugh along with him - Oh you are awful, Brandon! But joking aside, The Killers are the most commercially successful of all the bands he mentions.
Later, back at the rehearsal space, the band run through Sam's Town at deafening volume in preparation for the forthcoming tour - first the US, then the world. The infectious, almost contagious, chorus of When You Were Young sounds fabulous, as do the U2-like guitars and Twin Peaks synths of Read My Mind. Meanwhile, Smile Like You Mean It and Somebody Told Me benefit from the newfound harder edge.
They somewhat heavy-handedly underline the new direction by playing Paranoid by Black Sabbath and Get It On by T Rex. That's the thing: The Killers are not a subtle band. Their songs are like a wet kiss from a girl who's a bit too drunk. They are big and brash, and not everyone loves them for it. Mr Brightside and Somebody Told Me might go down as well at hip nightclubs as they do on the festival circuit, but the DJs play them with the same guilty look they wear when playing a pop record.
"I hate that," says Brandon. "Like writing a song you can hum somehow cheapens it? It makes me think of this quote by Morrissey. Everybody knows how he read Oscar Wilde, Keats and Yates when he was growing up and that he wanted to be a writer. He was talking to this journalist who asked why he hadn't become a writer, and Morrissey said: 'What I do is more powerful than what you do because I can write down these words and you get it to a melody. How can you beat that?' I'm of the same opinion. I don't understand why a good melody that's memorable is a bad thing."
Being dismissed as pop particular aggrieves Ronnie. "When we first came out we got compared to Duran Duran all the time. Jesus Christ! We got a keyboard player now all of a sudden he's Nick Rhodes! Come on!"
"The people who criticise us for being too poppy don't get it," agrees Mark. "I think that's the problem with a lot of rock music. People are afraid to write a song any more. Either that or they can't. And that attitude hurts music in general. The best bands ever have all written great songs. You can still do it and do it intelligently and it can be original. This isn't a studio creation with a producer writing these songs for us. We're not Avril Lavigne, or something like that. We're a real band writing real songs, just like a punk band would do, except that we write pop songs."
You get the impression that The Killers knack for showboating pop hooks that border on vulgar is inextricably tied up with the brazen side of Brandon's personality. But while his ebullient charisma, not to mention the songs themselves, mitigates his outrageousness, there is a less attractive side to his ego. He has a combative streak. He can't resist taking pot shots at emo bands, notably Fall Out Boy, whith whom The Killers share an A&R man.
Has he heard how many emo kids it takes to change a light bulb? "No." None. They just sit in the dark and cry. It's a full 30 seconds before he stops laughing. When he does he admits: "Yeah, we've had problems with other bands. You know, when you walk in the room it's like..." He whistles the theme to The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. "We're like gangs."
And while the other members of the band are diplomatic on the subject of Brandon, you don't have to read too deeply between the lines to conclude that there have been internal issues, too.
"Some people will think Brandon's the big genius," says Dave, visibly bridling. "There are songs, such as Why Do I Keep Counting?, where he's written every note. But there are others, like When You Were Young, that were more of a collaboration - like Mr Brightside, where I had some of the music and Brandon came up with the lyrics. We always have arguments about who wrote what. The truth is that we all help in that process."
When asked how success affected them, Ronnie says: "There were certain things that needed adjusting. When you're on tour for two years, people can get a little needy. It doesn't help that you're surrounded by yes men and everybody's working for you. At times we've had to say, 'Who do you think you are?' to people. No one wears the trousers, but some people would like to. I think if it wasn't for the people in the band kicking each other in the ass... Let's just say there was some ass-kickin'."
It doesn't take a genius to work out whose ass needed kicking most often.

It's the following day and The Killers are back at their rehearsal space. The topic of discussion is what to wear in the video for Bones, the second single. It's a big deal: the director is Tim Burton. "I feel like Frank Sinatra when I sing it," announces Brandon. "With maybe a little bit of Morrissey and a little bit of Elvis, too."
Of course he does. But if securing the services of Tim Burton tells you one thing, it's that The Killers are about to get even bigger, perhaps even make the leap to the same level as Coldplay et al. Already stars, they are about to become superstars. Brandon can hardly wait.
"Do you know that Rolling Stone didn't want to put us on the cover last time," he says indignantly. "They didn't think we were stars. We sold five million albums! What more do they want from a band?"
Whatever was required, Brandon would be happy to do most things. "I'll do stuff that some people don't want to do, 'cause I want people to hear the music," he says. However, even he has limits. "The Rolling Stone thing made the record label think: 'What can we do to make them stars?' If I go on vacation with my wife, do they have to send somebody to be there to take pictures of me? Is that how you become a star? I don't want that. I walked down the red carpet one time and I realised I don't like it. But you don't have to walk down the red carpet for people to hear your music. We do still have some of that indie blood running through our veins."
He heads off at a tangent: "When you walk around Liverpool, you think of The Beatles, or you go to Manchester and you think of The Smiths or Oasis. I want you to come to Las Vegas and think of Sam's Town. And I think we've started to capture that, which is a truer version of The Killers, 'cause that's where we're from."
He pauses.
"I used to live across the street from Sam's Town. Maybe it'll be like our Abbey Road where people go to take pictures."
Is that what he'd like?
"I wouldn't mind it," he says, desperately hoping it will come true.
He puts a cigarette between his lips, looks down at his trouser pockets and pats them in search of the lighter he bought yesterday.
"Hey, I don't suppose you've got one?"

The testing started out extraordinarily simple. Simple math, elementary school basic, but as I knocked out questions on the tablet, it definitely moved up. This held true in all sections, but I didn't catch on until eventually, Brad held up his hand, "Mr. Donny, it says my test is done."
Donny nodded, checking his computer at his desk really quickly, "Alright then, why don't you take yourself on down t'the cafeteria. Here's a card so y'can get yourself somethin' t'eat."
I spared a glance at Darryl, who similarly, glanced over at me, and we nodded. There was no reality where Brad Warner was simply smarter than everyone else here, and that meant the parameters were different than what we generally assumed during testing. The test kept going until you hit the wall, programmed to see how far you could take it. The questions stepped up as you answered, but that wouldn't be enough, cause then you could take forever, so there was a time element. The faster and more correctly you answer then, the higher your level goes. My questions were getting more and more detailed, more advanced maths and sciences. The test itself was designed to end when you hit the limit of your learning, but not in a 'get one question wrong' way, but a summation of overall knowledge.
Aimee was the next to complete her test,and was similarly handed a card for the cafeteria as she walked up dejectedly, and I spared a glance again. Darryl was just sort of loving life, while Mackenzie was clearly getting frustrated. We kept pushing through, until Mackenzie slammed her desk with both hands, startling everyone, "Damn it!"
She stalked to the front, snatched her card out of Donny's hand, and stormed out of the room, muttering something about eternal emnity. Darryl and I eyed each other: We were the last two left, and Darryl mouthed a congratulations to me before getting back into it. We kept going for a while, and finally, a hand went up, "Done."
Darryl's head shot in my direction, and Donny smiled, "Alright then, come get your card."
I got up, and took my card, then walked over to Darryl, "I didn't hold back."
I walked out of the room to head off to the cafeteria. In the end, I'd gone as far as the test would allow in Math and Science, the things I was consistently using. Where I'd met my match was English and Social Studies. I simply hadn't studied it as much due to the project and company needs, and thus neither improved much since I'd read my textbooks. I swung through the cafeteria, very aware that everyone was staring at me from their table as I grabbed food and drinks, and came to sit. Mackenzie gave me a look, "Darryl won?!"
I got her annoyance. She was two years ahead of us, and highly competitive by nature. Her chain of trophies had not been an accident or by anyone else's hand but hers, "Yup. He got me. Pretty sure I got dinged on Social Studies and English."
Aimee cut in, "But, like, your 1%?"
"1% only effects what I work on. I haven't been in an English class since the end of September, and it's not like I've been keeping up since. Same thing with Social Studies, it's mostly a study of history, and I haven't had the time for it. The math and science sure, but I haven't really had a reason to advance in my understanding of literature or broader history, so it didn't improve," I shrugged a bit as I dug into my little sub.
Aimee and Mackenzie were both upset at their placement, but Brad seemed perfectly fine. He'd never expected to do better, and it wasn't like he was invested in it, so it was nothing that he wasn't the smartest person in the room. He'd known he wasn't. Makenzie was basically ready to go redo the test for the sake of vengeance, so she'd be fine, but Aimee was pretty upset. I took a break from food to look at her, "Aimee, I'm sure you did fine. I've got a literal superpower for learning, Darryl's a super-nerd, and Mackenzie is two years ahead of you in school. Plus, we don't know what he's potentially scoring us on."
She was biting her lip a bit, which was distractingly cute, "I know, but..."
"This was an assessment test. As far as I understand it, there's no way to fail, it's just so that he knows where we're at," I spoke softly, taking her hand.
Aimee my hand, but looked close to tears, "But you're so..."
A sound of disgust turned us toward Brad, who finally joined in the conversation, "So what if you're not as smart? Who even gives a damn?! Like, dude, no one's ever gonna be as smart as him again. It'd be like saying you'll never be in the NBA cause you lost a pick-up game where the other team has Lebron, Jordan, and Bryant in their prime."
We all took a moment. Brad didn't really talk that much, so the idea of him being deep was... new. I smirked a little, "Very well-put, Brad."
It was well-put, and gave Aimee some context, not least of which was that she played basketball and the metaphor applied directly for her. She came down a moment and wiped her eyes, and we started chatting about stuff at the H.A.A. and classes until Darryl and Donny showed up. Darryl looked like he'd been through the wars, but he was still smiling, so clearly he was pretty proud of himself as he sat with us.
Donny stepped up with his tray, but didn't take a seat, "Alright y'all, now, I gotta go over the test results and whatnot, so while I'm workin' on that, you guys eat, and then go take some time in the rec area. Sound good?"
We nodded. After being stuck in testing for so long, getting to stretch our legs was a relief. Mackenzie needed to blow off steam, so we went up to one of the second floor halls to spar while the others watched. I took a moment before we got started to get a sidebar with Mackenzie, "I get it. Darryl beat you."
"This time. I'm a junior. I should've been able to beat him," She was distinctly displeased with herself as she put on sparring pads.
"Mackenzie, it's like Brad said, Darryl's a super-nerd, and he was in a test of knowledge. There's a reason he's in the honors classes," putting on my own pads as I continued, "And I get it. Losing to me, you could've taken it cause of the 1%, but Darryl was smarter than all of us combined before, that didn't shift since I got awakened, only my power did."
She glared up from the ground she sat on to get her footpads on, and while she didn't directly respond, I knew her well enough to know she was getting it. It did not do anything for her current temper. She was determined to be the best, not good, not great, the best. Anything less was a flaw in need of correction. Mackenzie kipped up off the floor, and discussion time was over. We bowed, took stance, and when Darryl called the start, she immediately went on the assault. She fired off a punch at my face, immediately dropping low for a sweep that I stepped over, and immediately launched into a waist take down, using the force of rebound from dropping low. With arms already up from the block, and one foot off the mat, she got her take down... sort of. Instead of trying to fight it, I rolled with it, catching her belt, and throwing her as we hit the mat, using the momentum of the fall. She didn't go too far, but it was for me to break out as she threw a ground elbow to drive me off, then spun as she rose, getting more distance from a series of spinning kicks. We were back in neutral stance, but now on opposite sides. I launched into my offensive.

Aimee was a bit shocked at how hard we went at it, and Brad looked like he was going to throw up, that ingrained fear of my sister being given legitimacy before his eyes. Our sparring sessions had changed, though, with it being done more or less in 'turns' now, with Mackenzie taking the lead off on offense, then me reversing to take it back and press her. We finished up after a few turns, and I grabbed a towel from the side, where Aimee was waiting, "So that's what it's like when you go all out?"
Mackenzie laughed, "Hell no. I tried that ride once, just for fun and yeah, no, I got nothing for that."
I could see Aimee considering her words, and there was something there she wanted to talk about, but she wanted to talk about it privately, "Alright, everyone. I don't know about everyone else, but I could use a cool off. I'm hitting the pool."
We got changed out, and hit the pool for a bit, mostly just relaxing. That's where Donny found us, "Alright y'all, got my lunch in and tests're graded."
Brad groaned, "Aw man, we gotta go back to class?"
Donny smiled, "Nah. We gotta do the physical assessment, and since y'all're already here, why don't we start with the pool?"
And that's when Darryl groaned. His time as champion of the assessments had come to an end.

update: thanks for your responses. Just to give some more info-this isn't for my job, so I won't get fired. It's a volunteer org. And I'm in the leadership, so am able to provide input into new policies. I'd just like to do so without being ostracized for being transphobic.
