2024.04.21 03:31 IamElylikeEli I’ve been coughing more and more, especially after eating and in the early morning or when going out into the cold

I‘ve had a cough for a while that I thought was some kind of allergy, it’s worst in the mornings especially when it’s cold outside, but also sometimes after I eat.
I haven‘t found any common ingredients for what might have been causing it though, so no longer think its an allergy. it’s been going on for over a year, but it’s gotten worse lately.
It’s a very wet caugh, lately I’ve been coughing up mucus, a lot of it, to the point that sometimes I’ll vomit out mucus and bile.
I‘m overweight and have been extremely sedentary, something I’m trying to work on, I’m also horribly depressed but I don’t know if that’s related.

2024.04.15 08:51 DenisHNC Chest pain mainly on the left side

Chest pain on left side, back, sometimes left arm or left leg
Age: 20
Sex: Male
Height 1.85m
Weight: 94kg
Race: white
Duration: 1 month
Location: Left side Chest, sometimes in the back/hand
Smoker: yes, started when i was 10
Drinking: yes, did my first beer at 8
Existing issues: I don't really know
Medicines: Kalinor and MagneTrans 243
Sorry if my english is a bit off, i am not native
It all started a month ago, so let me begin with the begining In the last years i lived quite a non-careful life. My whole life i've been an athlete, doing combat sports, gym, trying to make my phisical strenght as powerful as i can make it, but in the last 3 years i started doing weed, eating unhealthy, mostly fast foods, and doing ocasional cocaine. On 11 march was the last time i did coke, but i felt that it wasn't a good quality one, maybe it was cutted with adulterants, i am not sure, but 13 march i had i belive a caffeine overdose, i drank 4-5 redbulls, 2 coffes and a vodka energy while at work. The first 10 minutes were completly fine, i drank so much caffeine so that i could finish my work, but after these 10 minutes, the "fun" began. I felt a crushing pain in both sides of my throat, checked my heart with my hand on my chest, did not feel anything, but when checked the vein on the hand, it was a machine gun. Slowly numbing started to appear, firstly on my left hand, then on my left leg. I told my boss my symptoms, he asked me if i would like an ambulance, i said no, and just asked for a ride home. At home, i sitted with my legs lifted and with the body a bit raised, and after 3-4 hours, it became better, but still i had numbness. I slept it off, actually slept for 15 or 16 hours. After i woke up, i noticed my heart was still racing, 95BPM when waking up (usually i had 50-60), so i knew something was wrong. I tried to go to a doctor, but Germany closes a bit soon on GM's, so i had to wait till the next day. Limiting activity, of course. The next day i went to a medic, made an ekg and a blood sugar test, said eveything is normal and i should get better in the next days. Even thou i said that i have chest pains, numbness in the arm and leg Continued my life normal, without coke and caffeine. But did try to smoke a bit weed. It went to 130bpm when lying down, so i decided not to do that again. A week passed, returned to work, working normally (i work in a warehouse, walk around 24-26km a day, taking stairs also) and i noticed my heartbeat was still to fast, but i tried to ignore it. In that weekend, i went to a family party, where i drank (i ussualy consume alchool, i could say large quantities, like 0.3-0.5L of 35 or 52% strenght, so i might say it's a lot, but i drink over the full day) and also smoked weed in that night. Palpitations and numbness came back, so i went to the ER. My parents drove me there, when i got it, i told the lady that my chest hurts, she started giggling a bit, and took my BPM's. She was in shock to se 145 while standing and speaking with her, sent me right away in the chest pain room. There, i did an ekg, echocardiogram and quick blood tests for troponin levels, all came back normal. Told me to go to my family medic for futhure testing. After 4 days i went to him, checked me with a stetoscope on my chest and my arm, then gave me Kalinor and MagneTrans, told be i should be fine (no blood test or endoscopy as the hospital reccomended). Indeed, after taking the meds for 2 weeks, i no longer have a racing heart. BUT Chest still hurts, more like stabbing, or light holding 2/3 fingers, pressure, but not like a train, on multiple locations, only on the left side, sometimes goes on to my hand or back, or even both, still, on the left side. Caughing up alot of brown mucus, one even pink, but only once, and most of my coughs are in the morning, and also my left feet, near the toes, the part before the fingers is almost all the time hot, but after wearing compressions socks and sleeping with the leg elevated, it became better. Also, purple veins started to appear and spread on my shoulders, near the chest and arms Tomorrow i will have another exam at the family doctor, this time with blood tests, another ekg, another echocardiogram, but still, i am asking here, it could be more hidden then i think it is, i don t know, so please Answer when you can, i really need the help, i don t want to die just yet
I've limited smoking, trying to quit, limited alchool, trying to quit that as well, eaten only healthy since then, i try to limit the pain, but it does not work as much Also, for the location of the pain, -Right in the hole between the sternum and the ribs, where they split from each other -lower left pectoral -upper right towards center left pectoral, not center, but close enough -middle left side pectoral, near the nipple, but near the edge, close to the arm -sometimes it goes to the neck or arm or back
Again, thank you in advance, and i hope i get as many answers as needed

2024.03.19 00:03 spitfiremac active TB on deployment, latent TB on redeployment test, TB determination denied

This is for some of the posters with insider assessment experience on here... thanks in advance for your advice.
BLUF QUESTIONS:
Can you enlighten me on if an active TB record really matters, and if so, what can I do to prove I had active TB-like symptoms to substantiate my experience in lieu of having anything but proof I picked up latent TB on a deployment?
Is there a way proof of chonric symptoms and witness testimony along with the records of PPT testing would be enough to get the VA to acknowledge I actually got TB in case things get worse for me later in life?
TB-RELATED NEGATIVE DETERMINATION:
VA has determined my TB claim is not service-connected as there's solid records of a Positive PPT immediately following a deployment and a negative pre-deployment PPT. Despite my personal experience, there's no record during active TB on the deployment in between. Apparently, symptoms such as mine only follow an active bout of TB, or so I'm told, and since there's no medical record during the active period it never happened.
CHRONIC CONDITION:
The major physical problem I'm having is asthma-like symptoms (mainly insane bouts of coughing and overproduction of mucus) that I've been told could be a chronic immuno-response to a case of active TB. It's not very appealing to people... severely disrupted my college experience after during COVID. At one point the VA GP thought I might have pulminary fibrosis or emphysema as a result of the TB and it took 6 months to get the CT scan that cleared me, though I'm certainly thankful for that.
BACKGROUND:
I have records of a pre-deployment PPT showing negative and the re-deployment screening twelve months later showing a huge positive. X-Ray and CT showed no active signs so I was treated and sent back into society.
I spent months coughing on a deployment in Afghanistan, sometimes so much I was caughing up blood. This is after a local informant that met with us was doing the same. I was a team leader of an autonomous HUMINT team on a small SF base, and I just self-isolated, wore masks, stopped going outside the wire for a time, etc because I knew that I'd likely lose my command, team, and our great mission I had fought so hard for us to support. I sucked it up and eventually got over it.

2024.02.12 07:06 Colette2118 Waking up at night with violent cough?

Does anyon else experience this. I’m on day 8 now and ever since I started coughing up mucus I also wake up at 4-6am needing to caugh (my body literaly forces me to caugh, sometimes for like 20mins - it feels somewhat like ‘hey we’re suffocating; cough NOW’ - although I know it’s not that bad and I wouldn’t suffocate due to mucus if I didn’t cough right then).

2024.01.06 07:35 comic_book_bunny Anyone NOT have a chronic cough?

Hi, first time posting here. My 14 yo is currently admitted for a 2 week tune up. She normally has no cough or symptoms and hadn't cultured anything in over a year. Her at home respiratory therapy is saline and vest twice a day with pulmozyme in the evenings.
Last Septemeber I noticed that her color changed and sge had low energy, I felt like something was up but she had no other symptoms so I thought maybe depression (around this time she was diagnosed with cataracts from taking Trikafta.)
At the end of September we both caught RSV. Her only symptoms were a sore throat (still no cough) and a drop in lung function. Clinic said she sounded clear, assumed it was the virus, and scheduled a follow up 4 weeks later. When we went back her dr said she still sounded clear but she had a 17 pt drop in lung function. Throat swab showed she grew STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS and SERRATIA LIQUEFACIENS so she started a large dose of Augmentin. She still sounded clear and had no cough but her low energy was getting worse. We finished that round of antibiotics and saw no improvement in her lung function. If I'm remembering correctly, her numbers went from 109% to 80% and then stayed at 80%. The oral antibiotics didn't seem to do anything so I asked her clinic if she needed to be admitted but her Dr said she wasn't sick enough to need it. Four days later she developed a cough (we both caugh a cold) and a few days after I heard the change and knew she needed treatment. I called her clinic and the on call doctor admitted her without seeing her (not her usual dr.)
The first 2 or 3 days of antibiotics made a huge difference. Her color returned to her cheeks, her energy, appetite and general mood greatly improved and still Dr's all said her lungs sounded clear. Her cough even sounded drier. Then the next day she woke up pale and miserable with a deep, horrible cough. Every day since, her lungs have sounded worse and worse. Yesterday it was "rattling", today it was "groaning". She coughed so heavily a few hrs ago that she threw up and she's having to take ibuprofen to be able to tolerate respiratory therapy and to sleep.
Her lung function tests show that she is improving since being admitted so antibiotics are working. Has anyone else had a drastic improvement and then a drastic decline like this?
If all the junk that's breaking up now has been there all along, how was she not coughing all this time? Is it possible for infection and mucus to just sit in her lungs like that with no way of knowing? If so what symptoms do we go off of to know when she needs iv antibiotics? Her cultures since taking oral antibiotics have all come back clear. I feel like the only reason she was admitted is because she caught a cold and finally ticked the box of having a cough.
Just wondering if anyone else with cf has experienced anything like this.

2023.11.13 16:14 Leonardo040786 My GERD orLPR is strictly associated with respiratory infections, unless left untreated

Male, 37years, 93kg, 179 cm
So, I caught cold for the third time this year, and as usually, it coincided with GERD. I first got GERD 3 years ago, when living in an apartment where the landlord started doing some remodeling while i lived in it. Drilling holes in the walls while I was at work created lots of dust that caused me to have bronchitis and caughing for 30 days. After that past, I was constantly feeling hot, sweating and felt my throat is irritated. As it was the time of lockdown and I was a PhD student in foreign country with no health insurance, it took me 3 months to realise on my own that my throat is not hurting because of respiratory issues, but acid. After I went home for summer, having suffered for 6 months without treatment, gastroscopy confirmed that i had damage to my esophageal epithelia. I started with PP inhibitors and recovered after 5 months. However, since then, every time I catch some respiratory infection, I get GERD symptoms back. It makes my cold so much worse and it prolongs my recovery. Liquid comes down from sinuses, and also, due to acid, my salivary glands become too active and liquid comes up as well. This makes it very difficult to fall asleep, as I have constant feeling that this is blocking my respiration and i might asphyxiate i sleep.
Is there a way to break this unfortunate association somehow? My own theory is that my mucus is so damaged, that some immune cells are exposed, which they shouldn't be, and that produces too much histamine, which in turn relaxes my lower esophageal sphincter. Any gastrointestinal specialists here that might reccomend something?

2023.11.03 15:18 dan7ebg Black stuff in nose mucus

So, I got a caught starting this Monday, after that for the next 2 days and a half I had a moderate fever. On Wednesday I noticed that when I blow my nose(nose is not runny tho) there is this black stuff in the mucus. I don't have a fever for the last 2 days, I'm barely coughing as well, but I still see this black stuff. When I caugh and force phlegma out there might be some black in there as well, but when I do it during the day, not there.
In general I dont feel as sick anymore, I dont have much trouble breathing, my nose feels clear, yet there's this thing in the pic which i took 20 mins ago.
I am in my very early 30s, I am smoker (but this hasnt happened before, not that I can recall), I keep my apartment generally clean. After noticing the black stuff yesterday as well, I did extra cleaning of my apartment, cleaned and vacuumed my bedroom, changed the sheets, still there!
Google says fungal infection or worse(cuz ofc it does), so im wondering if you guys might know what's up before I take any action.

2023.09.27 08:06 latecookies Is swimming flaring up my asthma?

I'm 25M (allergic asthma) and recently started swimming. I picked the best, cleanest pool in the city. I don't have a lot of issues with my asthma except a lot of mucus from my nose going to my lungs every day that makes me caugh it out, especially during this period. Therefore i doubled my dose for a week of Symbicort and I felt much better. I went swimming twice. I did not have problems taking a breath or having difficulties breathing. But last night around 1AM I woke up with the need to cough. It might have been becaused I cleaned the floors of my room before going to sleep or because my swimwear and towel from swimming (with chlorine) were drying in my room. Overall, the new place where I am in feels very humid. I slept with an open window now. I don't know if i should continue going to the pool. Basically I can do physical activity without any problem. My problem is the cough that I have every day. Any help will be welcome!

2023.03.02 10:01 account_for_norm My Recovery Experience

I am thankful for this sub and ppl here. You guys were very helpful in my recovery.
Most of the tips on this sub are accurate, so i wont rehash all those. IMO the most important thing for the wound to not hurt and heal faster is for it to be moist all the time / most of the time. When it gets dry and there is movement, (and there always is, breathing, small burp, caugh and worst a sneeze), the skin probably tears and it causes the pain.
To keep it moist, your body needs plenty of water to create fluid. So drink a lot of water. Water will also keep the wound moist from outside, but it drains away fast. So the greatest thing this sub advised was: the Aloe Water. I used the alo brand, and it was awesome. Aloe vera water is a bit mucus like, so it does not simply run down the throat like normal water, and stick a bit on the wound, keeping the wounds moist and elastic, greatly relieving pain, and helping the body do its job of healing.
At night is when the biggest problem happens, coz it gets dry. And thats when humidifier comes in picture. Gives you at least some sleep. But the wound is still gonna get dry eventually and you're gonna wake up. For me, after i woke up, i immediately tried to drink water, but the swallowing movement itself (and also maybe the cold temp directly on the wound) created enough tears that that pain was way worse than the pain i woke up with. So i developed a regimen when i woke up. First i had a verrrry small sip of water at room temperature, and i didnt swallow it. I let it hang there near the throat with my head on the pillow looking at the ceiling. I let the would catch some moisture. Then the second sip would be a bit bigger. And then i would take the cold water. So i gradually got my wound to come to the normal condition when i could drink more water.
That was my main takeaway. My recovery was relatively fast. Everyone experiences one special day, when its a complete turning point, where the pain suddenly becomes manageable. Mine was day 6.
Day1-3: pain: 3/10, swallowing: 6/10
Day 4-5: pain 5/10, swallowing 7/10
Day 6: pain 3/10, swallowing 4/10
Day 7-8: like normal sore throat. Most things normal.
I took oxy and tylenol for those 6 days. I barely ate. Oxy helped with forgetting that i was hungry. Lost 9lbs. So it was good wt reduction lol. I dont advise this, coz your body does nutrients to heal, it was for me personally coz swallowing was excruciatingly painful.
I am grateful for my body, i am grateful to the doctors and folks on this sub. Now looking forward!
Adios!

2021.12.03 01:13 marman12 I‘m scared that I have post covid.

TLDR at the end
28m not vaxxed / no health issues
Hey peepz, ive been lurking around here since I had my first positive test after a weekend of heavy partying ,which was around 11/13 (PCR) symptoms were headache , nausea , fever from 38-39 celsius and a caugh which felt like a bronchitis but the mucus was actually colorless. I could only force my self to have a walk around a few blocks to get some fresh air. My symptoms stated earlier went away after 10-12 days . I immediatly saw my doc and did a heart echo and bloodworks . Echo came back normal . Blood works were normal too except thrombocytes which were a bit above normal range ( guess cause it was shortly after beeing infected?).i felt good and happy after that appointment and thought old life can go on again. Hell was i wrong . In the evening i started to feel very weak and fell asleep immediatly . After that every day i get little waves of tiredness and fatigue which come and go as they whish. I also dont think i get good sleep as i sometimes wake up with a puffy face and a slight headache . I can take walks better than during my infection but i feel slightly out of breath afterwards( i try to get like 5000 steps a day). BP is low from 110-90 / 70-65 . Prior i was in normal range 120/75-ish. Its now 21 days since my first positive pcr test and im really scared of having/getting long/postcovid?? (Whats the difference btw?)
My question guys are these already symptoms for post covid? Like is it carved in stone. Please give me some stories of recovery.
I also wanted to wish everyone here a good recovery
TLDR: im on day 20 after my first positive pcr test and im im scared of having post covid

2021.11.13 20:22 marman12 Covid pneumonia?

Hey peepz,
28m / 78kg / caucasian / weekend drinker
So last monday the first symptoms in headache and joint pain started to begin.
Next morning fever (38-39.5 celsius) and caughing were also adding up . I felt miserable and thought myself to have a covid rapid test . From monday to wednesday I tested negative . On thursday then the first positive rapid test , tried to get in confirmed by a PCR test which then came out negative.
I thought myself ok fine no covid. But on friday night I somehow start to taste and smell weird. After waking up this morning I made another rapid test, came out positive again. So confused as I was I said fuck it it has to be covid for sure. Went to a place where they do express PCR test and here I am positive on Covid. Good the thing is the fever I had midweek went down ( I also used tylenol twice a day ) . The one thing messing with me is my coughing, it feels like bronchitis which I had a few times in my life , when exhaling there is also some crackling noises. I also have mucus but unlike a bronchitis it has no real color more like a whitish salvia like .
My question here is if this is already a stage of pneumonia ? Its not the usual "dry-caugh" people usuallly get from covid.

Thank you very much in advance, much appreaciated <3

2021.01.27 18:36 Broad_Boysenberry_62 Sick cat, won't eat, 4 days, tests are ok

Hi,
My cat threw up on saturday 3 times - First time food, second time a few hours later and there was foam twice, last time a few hours later and that was just a coinsize of white foam. She did not eat the entire day and she also did not use the litter box other than to urinate. Watched her whole night after this, but she did not eat or use the litter box on sunday either and she only drank water once.
Took her to the vet on monday and they gave her IV and medicine to remove nausea. They also did an X-ray and laxatives, which made her poop. The stool was hard at the back, but soft longer inside and they meant that this constipation was not enough to make her not want to eat and vomit. Took her home to try and get her to eat, but did not work. That day there was some mucus coming out of her backend, looked like egg white almost, but a little more yellow in colour. It came out without her pushing, just as she was lying down. We went back on tuesday and was sent to a specialist in inner medicine.
She has now been there one night, still not eaten (day 4) and they are giving her IV with Calium and other electrolytes as well as folat, because these came back low on the blood work. They also did an ultrasound which COULD indicate that there is something wrong with her gallbladder, but the biopsy they took (or the liquid) did not indicate that. They also saw a little small area on the intestines that could indicate that something is wrong with her passage, but haven't confirmed this. She is now given both nausea stimulating drugs, IV and pail relief, but still not eating anything. She is lethargic (or was when i dropped her off), but calm.
She has always had somewhat hard stool and regularly throws up after food, at least once a weak. But she is always OK after and I just figured that it was because she is eating too fast or due to a hairball. She has also been caughing and sneezing a little for a time, longer than a few weeks. She also has this noice when she breaths, sounds like a stuffed nose, but she does not always make it. Sometimes when she sleeps there is no sound.
Do you have any idea what could cause this or what kind of tests could be appropriate? She is a sterilised, 4 year old oriental cat.

2021.01.20 08:18 mastav79 mystery lung issue, slightest wheeze that comes and goes, morning lung stiffness that feels like congestion with no mucus

First i want to thank you for taking your time to read my post. About 2-3 months ago i woke up with a very slight and high pitched wheeze on exhale. it has remained since then. Its more prevalent when I wake up but can come and go and be louder or softer throughout the day. The other thing thats both strange and scary is almost day, after a long sleep 2+hours, the first big breath i take feels like it stretches out my lungs. it feels a lot like congestion but without the mucus. i have gained 30+ pounds in the past 2 years. in the past i have been treated for post nasal drip and acid reflux. for acid reflux i took unbranded zantac for 6 months. i spoke with a teladoc who gave me a steroid pack and teslon pearls which did little to nothing for the wheezing. ive also taken zyrtec for the past week with little or no change. ive never smoked cigarettes, but did smoke pot for 10 years, but have quit for almost a year now. i just turned 41. high tsh (15), slightly high bp, and slightly high cholesterol. My house seems very dry and both me and my wife wake up with very dry mouths. I also drink at least half a bottle of redline a day. I Very recently I went to the doctor for checkup and they listened to my lungs and said it sounded good, and an ect and both were normal. My lungs havent been producing phlegm even if i caugh, when id say i do on an above average amount of. I have googled it thoroughly and only some of the things fit for copd, asthma, allergies, or lung cancer. I going to my primary care physician Friday to have them look deeper into it. Until then does anyone have any insight into what may be the cause, no matter how grim? Again, thanks in advance.

2020.10.06 23:12 BA-R Mucus tastes like match heads!

Hi. I am getting desperate and will appreciate any help.
My mucus tastes like matches. Yes, don't ask me how I came up with this association. It started when I was little around 7 years old. Back then I assosiated the taste with nuts. It became more and more intense extremely fast. The worst is not the taste per ce, of course, but following symptoms shortly after - hyper production of mucus and caughing LOTS of caughing. In the worst case I got fewer and needed immidiate IV. My doctors didn't find the cause. Somehow it stopped after another IV and never came back untill now (10 years later). I got similar problem this summer and again my doctors didn't know the reason. But now I describe it as matches. I do not know if the taste is the same as then, I simply don't remember. I started IV again and it worked really well. But now, almost 3 weeks after I finished my IV course it is back again! And it's getting worse every day. My caughing is getting worse. And everything started from the taste again. I am not fan of overusage of antibiotics and I wish I could continue without starting any medication and proceed with my usual plan - IV antabiotics every 3rd month. I have 4 strains og P. aeruginosa multiresistant + S. aureus ( occasionally). We thought maybe the last ome gives the symptom but it is not correlated with the times it was found in my sputum. So maybe there is something else we are missing. If there is another infection I need the right treatment. So anything familiar?

2018.12.16 19:55 Shelcole19 My nose is killing me...

Ok so I have a stuffie nose, and have had one since week 8 or week 9, I'm now at week 19. It wont go away and when I sleep I wake up with it stuffed on one side, then when I rotate, it goes to the other side and I cant breath for a few minutes as it settles on the other side of my nose. Also to go with the mucus that is in my nose I have a sore throat and caugh from it and I'm just laying in bed attempting to breath and caughing every few minutes.

2016.11.19 15:39 supergnaw Is this cat asthma, and if so, what tests do I need to tell the vet to do to get an actual diagnosis instead of just "it's hairballs"?

I'm no expert but I feel like this vet doesn't know what he's talking about and I want a second opinion. We're about to move out of the country so I'd really like this figured out sooner rather than later. If it actually is asthma (again, no expert), I'm not a huge fan of the shots myself but if they work thats fine. But on the other hand, moving out of the country makes these fancy inhalers more appealing as it would be an at-home treatment and wouldn't be as difficult to administer. Anyway, thanks in advance for the help.

2012.11.10 16:59 JustRead How long should I wait before I see the doctor, and how long should I wait before I must take antibiotics?

I have following symptoms:
I took neocitron last night to sleep better, this morning the mucus I coughed up was all brown, still have jaw and teeth ache
My question is: How long should I wait till I go see the doctor? If I go see her and she prescribes antibiotics, should I take them right away or wait to see if my immune system is able to defeat whatever I have be it cold, infection, etc...
I appreciate your input.
EDIT: Thanks everyone for your advice. I went to doctor, she prescribed me AMOXICILIN 3 capsules per day for 10 days. I'll take those and Advil cold and sinus too.
