He’s 4 and a half and will still only eat baby food for most of his nutrients. Absolutely refuses anything considered table food. There are no family meals in my household, neither my husband or I were raised that way so we basically eat when we are hungry and eat whatever we can wrangle up. The kids eat get whatever is available that they fancy too. Back to the preschooler- so apart from the purées, he eats a few fruits, chocolate milk 2x a day, cheese, yogurt, fries, air fried plantain, the occasional cucumber and chips (bbq lays, cheezit’s , goldfish, pretzels). That’s literally his diet. If I want him to eat anything else I have to blend it and add apple sauce. He will eat that gladly. The pediatrician says it’s normal but I don’t think it is?! Help!

Hello! I currently co-teach a PFA class blended 20 kids (some with ieps, some without) My co teacher (gen ed) always uses youtube videos for brain breaks or movement during circle time. This irks me to no end. She just turns on a video, then walks away and does other things. Kids stare at the screen like zombies. According to our state rules our classroom is not supposed to have more than 10 min of ANY technology all day.
Personally, I hate using youtube. This is a preschool class for at risk kids, and I KNOW most of them are "ipad/iphone" kids. I have done the home visits. I would love ideas for NON TECH move and groove. One thing I did so far is give one child a job of "personal trainer" and they come up with exercises for everyone to do (jumping jacks, squat, march, etc) we do 10 each. But I would dlike to change it up! Any ideas???

12-year old Ivy Doe, desperately wishes she could have a family, a last name, and more importantly the answers to why she’s able to shoot fireballs from her fingers one day, and the ability to grow plants by using her mind the next. Ivy doesn’t know where her weird mixes of powers come from, but she knows she must keep it a secret. First from the rest of the Jane Doe kids at her Philadelphia Orphanage, and now from her new adopted mother, who moved her all the way down south, to Charleston, South Carolina.
In her new school, Ivy learns about the African American group, the Gullah Geechee, and how many African Americans, especially the ones in Philadelphia are secretly Gullah, but lose their memories of the Gullah culture as each year went past. Her classmate Jalen warns Ivy that a terrible wizard lives at the end of Ivy’s street and to stay away from the house, but one night, she spies on Jalen using magic himself, walking inside the same creepy house he warned her to stay away from.
After days of spying on him, Ivy realizes Jalen and his family also have a unique blend of powers, like herself. They tell her she’s not a witch or a fairy, like she always thought, but something much more rare. The problem is someone far more dangerous knows Ivy’s true worth and power and is using her as bait to lure her people out of hiding and steal the Magic of the Gullah people forever. Armed with only the knowledge she recently learned in Black History class; Philadelphia born; Ivy Doe must use the once forgotten culture of the Gullah from within her to save her friends.
I was inspired to write this novel after downloading TikTok and noticing the trending topic was everyone asking African Americans, “What part of Africa are your ancestors from?” and then laughing when they reply, “I don’t know.” It was disheartening seeing American kids and teens cry as people laugh and call them orphans without last names, and being mixed with multiple races and cultures. I wanted to turn the negative into a positive and show that it's an asset and not a liability to have a combined strength of multiple groups to create a brand-new culture and bond with a newfound family.

“Who are you? Where did you come from?”
The same squeaky voice and rattling chains were growing louder, which means he was getting closer. I didn’t turn around, I kept my normal pace, ignoring him, looking both ways before quickly crossing the street.
“Hey, slow down!” He shouted.
I shook my head, realizing he is not going to stop until I answer him. I spun around rapidly in mid step.
“Whoaaaa!” The lanky boy from my seventh-grade history class yelled. Twisting his handlebar roughly, swirling to my side in record speed, missing my body by inches.
“You almost hit me!” I exclaimed.
“Who… are…,” He stopped talking and inhaled and exhaled three times, before continuing, “Who you tho?”
This guy doesn’t give up. Besides, didn’t he already know my name? Everyone should, thanks to our history teacher, Mrs. Shaker, who thought it would be a great idea for me to stand at the front of the entire class and introduce myself as the first new student to arrive at Charleston Morningside Middle school in years. A great idea alright, more like a great way to be embarrassed. All the other kids in this town have known each other since preschool and were staring at me like I was an alien; a one-eyed green Martian to be exact. But I put on a brave face, like I always do, and pretended things didn’t bother me. Apparently, my classroom introduction wasn’t enough info for this boy. As soon as the bell rang, he hopped on his bike, hurling inquiries at me the entire walk home.
“I told you; my name is Ivy.”

In February 2016, the Russian Orthodox Church’s Bishops’ Council made amendments to the ROC Charter, according to which Mongolia was included in the canonical territory of the Russian Orthodox Church. It demonstrates a special attitude towards Mongolia on the part of the ROC. That amendment was explained both by the historical position of Mongolia in the Russian Empire’s sphere of influence and by the present time; since the early 1990s, none of the Local Orthodox Churches, except the Russian Church, has sent missionaries to Mongolia.
Over the fourteen years of Fr. Alexei Trubach’s service as the rector (2005–2019), energetic missionary activities in various fields were organized in Mongolia (mainly in the cities of Ulaanbaatar and Erdenet). As a result, a strong multinational Orthodox community has been built in Mongolia, consisting not only of Russian-speaking citizens of Russia and Mongolia, but also of those Mongolians and citizens of third countries for whom modern Russian is as foreign and incomprehensible as liturgical Church Slavonic.
The expectations of Fr. Eugene Startsev (then rector of the Church of the Hodegetria Icon in Ulan–Ude, now a cleric of the Irkutsk Diocese), which he expressed during his trip to the Khalkhin Gol in August 2005, were surprisingly fulfilled:
“Batiushka labors absolutely selflessly in this field… He is zealous in his ministry. He serves alone in the church—he censes, reads and sings himself. Fr. Alexei has extensive plans. I think that for the most part they are destined to come true, because he is a serious priest. I am sure that he will have a choir and a reader.” [1]
Indeed, on the foundation laid by the clergy of the Chita and Transbaikal Diocese and by the first rector of the parish, Archpriest Anatoly Fesechko, Archpriest Alexei arranged a well-organized, systematic liturgical and extra-liturgical life; a church choir was formed from professional Mongolian singers—a rare phenomenon for modern Russian churches abroad. Three acolytes served in the church altar, and services began to be translated into Mongolian.
During the Divine Liturgy, the Great Litany and antiphons began to be proclaimed and sung in Mongolian, the Epistles and the Gospel are read in three languages: Church Slavonic, Mongolian and English. This principle of addressing the country’s local population in their native language is even implemented in the paintings of the Holy Trinity Church, on the walls of which there are the initial words of the Creed in Mongolian. The Third and the Sixth Hours are served in Mongolian as well.
In addition to the celebration of all services according to the Typikon, a sports and cultural and educational center began to function stably in the parish. From December 2008 [2] to January 2013, the Troitsa (“Trinity”) parish newspaper was printed in Russian and Mongolian. Catechetical literature (by St. Nikolaj [Velimirovic] of Zica and Priest Georgy Maximov, our contemporary) and prayer-books (the morning and evening prayer rules) were translated into Mongolian. Besides, since the late 2006 there has been a parish website, which is currently being modernized. In addition to the website, the parish's social media page appeared under the next rector, Priest Anthony Gusev.
Archpriest Alexei Trubach fulfilled all the tasks he had been entrusted with and on May 30, 2019, due to the end of his mission term, by the decision of the Holy Synod, he was released from his obedience as rector of the Holy Trinity Church in Ulaanbaatar.

Priest Anthony Gusev, a cleric of the Orenburg Diocese, was appointed next rector by decree of His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia on July 5, 2019. Prior to sending him to Mongolia, the Church hierarchy charged him with a task that may seem ordinary: “to preserve the parish.” Providentially, it was six months before mankind was faced with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Having experience in organizing and carrying out design and repair work, in the first months after his arrival in Ulaanbaatar Fr. Anthony repaired the parish apartment, the roof of the parish building and the gym (ventilation, lighting) and arranged for the exterior whitewashing of the building and the church. Later, as funds accumulated, the heating system inside the church was improved, and the furniture in the sanctuary was partially replaced.
The task that the Church hierarchy had set before Fr. Anthony became particularly relevant during the period of strict lockdowns and other precautionary measures imposed in Mongolia for quite a long time in response to the spread of coronavirus. From February 2020 to September 2021 (with rare short intervals) the church was closed for public worship and even for visitors. Movement around the city during lockdowns was limited, many parishioners fell ill, and most residents of the country were simply afraid to leave their homes. In such circumstances, to keep people in a prayerful mood, strengthen their faith, organize services, and provide an opportunity for Orthodox parishioners to attend them was an absolutely new challenge that the Russian Orthodox Church in Mongolia faced.
Thanks to the personal participation of the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Mongolia I.K. Azizov and the close ties established in Ulaanbaatar by Fr. Anthony Gusev, it became possible to celebrate the Divine Liturgy during lockdowns, first in the cinema hall of the Russian Embassy building in Mongolia, where Pascha was celebrated in 2020, and then in the Trade Mission’s outbuilding. Thus, active interaction of the Church and State allowed the Orthodox in Mongolia even during restrictions to participate in the most important Church sacrament—the Eucharist.
With the support of Russian firms and agencies of Russian companies, food packages were collected twice a year in the parish in order to support socially vulnerable segments of the population, whose numbers had noticeably increased owing to the stresses caused by measures to combat COVID-19. In addition, in July–August 2021, an extended-day group was temporarily organized within the walls of the parish building for children of Russian compatriots who, under quarantine measures, had to stay at home all the time and were unable to attend preschool educational institutions.
Another form of social service has been the regular collection of humanitarian aid on the territory of the parish for people in the SMO zone with the active participation of the Coordination Council of the Organization of Russian Compatriots in Mongolia.
We should also mention apologetic work carried out by the Russian Orthodox Church in Mongolia. In Orthodoxy “apologetics” is understood as “defending the dignity of Christian teaching as the only true one before those who deny it” and “revealing and defending Christian teaching with the help of means used by adherents of other faiths and non-believers.” [3]
It is known that a broad range of Protestantism flourishes in Mongolia. According to some outdated information, the most numerous are evangelicals (having about 36,000 people, 400 communities, and forty-seven NGOs) and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons; around 8,000–10,000 members, thirty branches, and over 160 missionaries). [4]
In 2010 the comprehensive encyclopedia called Religions of the World by the American religious scholar J. Gordon Melton (a member of the United Methodist Church) estimated that Christians make up 1.7 percent of the country’s population (47,100 adherents). [5] According to the 2020 census, the number of Christians in Mongolia among those over the age of fifteen has dropped to 2.2 percent [6]. According to a survey conducted by the Institute of Philosophy of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, 2.4 percent of the population identify themselves as Christians among the country’s religious citizens. [7]
In addition, certain conditions for the position of Orthodoxy in Mongolia are imposed by some articles of the Mongolian Law “On the Relationship Between the State and Religious Institutions”, which has already been considered in part 1. It regulates missionary activities of preachers of “non-traditional” religions. So for example, according to paragraph 2 of Article 3, “it is prohibited to compel citizens to embrace or not embrace a faith”; according to paragraph 7 of Article 4, “it is prohibited to hold organized events to spread religion from abroad”; according to paragraph 8 of Article 4, “the State regulates the total number of clergy and the locations of churches.” [8] This circumstance entails the annual practice of extending State registration of religious organizations, including Orthodox parishes.
The process of annual re-registration of a religious organization is rather complicated, lengthy and requires certain skills. Nevertheless, recently some representatives of the capital city authorities have met the Holy Trinity parish halfway, moving away from their notorious formalism. It is largely thanks to both the diplomacy of the rectors of the Orthodox parish and the authorities’ sincere amazement: “It appears that, unlike many Protestant organizations, the Orthodox in Mongolia just pray without participating in other, non-religious activities.” [9]
The abundance and diversity of Christian teachings in Mongolia creates a rich polemical environment for Orthodox missionaries. Orthodox clergy and laypeople regularly talk about the faith with the capital city residents and in the country in general not only at their parish, but also in everyday life situations. As a result, some Mongolians, Russians, and citizens of third countries permanently residing in Mongolia convert to Orthodoxy. Besides, many Mongolians living in Ulaanbaatar who are located outside the area where the Russian church is situated learn about the Holy Trinity parish’s existence and about Orthodox Christianity solely from such conversations.
The population of the country is quite tolerant of and somewhat indifferent to the vestments of Orthodox priests, so over the fourteen years of his ministry in Mongolia Fr. Alexei Trubach always walked freely around the city in his cassock, which, according to him, was also a form of mission. Fr. Anthony adheres to a similar practice.
During the two modern stages, under Priests Alexei and Anthony, regular talks were held with Mongolian residents who had suffered after going to shamans and turned to Orthodox clergy for spiritual help and support. This applied both to unbaptized Mongolians (some of whom were later baptized, but in most cases continued to adhere to their beliefs and to turn to shamans for “help” again) and to baptized but non-religious local Russians, who culturally partially merge with the native population of Mongolia, the spirituality of which is mainly a blend of Buddhist beliefs and shamanic and other pre-Buddhist cults.
Under Fr. Alexei Trubach, the Russian Orthodox Church in Mongolia established warm, friendly relations with both the head of the largest local Buddhist sangha (the Mongolian Buddhist Association, head abbot of Gandantegchinlen Monastery in Ulaanbaatar) D. Choijamts (served from 1993 to 2023) and the Catholic Bishops Wenceslao Padilla (2002–2018) and his successor Giorgio Marengo (cardinal since August 2022) and other clerics of the Roman Catholic Church.
Since 2021, there has been a regular practice of organizing and holding interfaith dialogues (Orthodox-Catholic, Orthodox-Buddhist, and other round tables) and mutual visits on the occasion of commemorative and solemn events.
During his five-year ministry, Fr. Anthony, despite the challenges of the pandemic, did not interrupt his liturgical activity, organizing the collection of humanitarian aid for both poor residents of Ulaanbaatar (during lockdowns), regardless of their denominations, and for people in the war zone, repairing the parish building, the gym and arranging the whitewashing of the church (which hadn’t been whitewashed since the time it was built). He takes an active part in official events of the Russian Embassy in Mongolia and the Russkiy Dom (“Russian House”) Russian Scientific and Cultural Center, cooperates with many Russian and Mongolian public organizations, involving all interested citizens in the development of parish life, maintaining relations with members of numerous non-Orthodox denominations in the country. Moreover, together with representatives of Russian search expeditions he more than once visited the battlefields in Dornod Aimag (province), where memorial services were celebrated for those who were killed there.
A gym continues to function on the territory of the parish, where fitness training and martial arts training sessions are held; the Anima art school is still open, and among its students there are children with various congenital diseases. The parish has a Sunday school for children, where parishioners teach. Some Sunday school students were born in Mongolia from both Russian and mixed marriages, and were baptized within the walls of the Holy Trinity Church. Regularly after the Sunday Divine Liturgy and the subsequent meal, reading and study of the Holy Scriptures is organized.
The number of parishioners is growing and is not limited only to Russian-speaking citizens of Russia and Mongolia. According to Fr. Anthony, today there are 150-200 parishioners in the country’s only Orthodox church, with thirty to seventy people praying at Sunday services—these are Russians, Mongolians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Greeks, Serbs, Britons, Americans, Georgians, Poles, Canadians and New Zealanders. [10]
The great merit of the Russian Orthodox Church in Mongolia is the integration into Church life of baptized people—those who are usually perceived as Orthodox “by definition”. Many local Russian specialists permanently residing in Mongolia, as well as those on business trips from Russia, without adhering to any particular religious system (even if they are baptized), are quite easily drawn into all sorts of local Buddhist teachings, Shamanistic and Parabuddhist cults. [11]
But not all plans have been implemented so far. For example, the large-scale reconstruction of the church park area and the construction of a chapel-burial vault in the southwestern part of the parish area, in which the remains of Soviet soldiers who fell in the Battles of Khalkhin Gol in 1939 will be buried, are still planned.
Thus, the three rectors of the Holy Trinity Parish of Ulaanbaatar at the present stage of the history of Orthodoxy in Mongolia have successfully solved the specific tasks assigned to them by God. Under Fr. Anatoly Fesechko, a house church was equipped, the parish building was rebuilt, and the foundation of the Orthodox community, which exists in the parish to this day, was laid. Under Archpriest Alexei Trubach, the church was built, the surrounding area was beautified, a gym appeared and liturgical and extra-liturgical parish life was organized in all possible forms. Under Priest Anthony Gusev, the parish withstood the unprecedented test of the pandemic, and Orthodox residents of the capital could participate in joint services during lockdowns, the community was preserved and new members are still joining today.
The results and prospects of 160 years of service
The purpose of this article was not only to demonstrate some key episodes related to the history of Orthodoxy in Mongolia ahead of the 160th anniversary of its existence, but also to show that the example of Mongolia and its Orthodox community clearly shows the universal nature of the Orthodox faith, where there is neither Greek nor Jew (Col. 3:11); neither a local Russian, nor a Mongol, nor a Russian diplomat, nor a descendant from a mixed marriage (whether between a Russian and a Mongolian or a Mongolian and a Briton)…
In the thirteenth and the fourteenth centuries, the imperial mood of Mongolian khans allowed them to become closer to Orthodox preachers, who felt comfortable in the capital of the empire—Karakorum. A natural development of these relations was the establishment of the Diocese of Sarai in the Golden Horde, which bound together the Horde and Russia, performing certain diplomatic mediation functions for the Byzantine Empire and the Russian princes alike.
The clergy of the Diocese of Sarai and other dioceses bordering the Horde, despite their secure existence under imperial patronage, were quite passive in mission. Despite this, the scarce (in terms of numbers) preaching of Orthodoxy had a wholesome effect on the hearts of some individual Horde representatives. And speaking about some of the major figures of the joint Russo-Mongolian past, we can’t ignore their confession of the Orthodox faith. First of all, these are three saints: the Right-Believing Prince Alexander Nevsky, the Venerable Tsarevich Peter of the Horde and the Holy Hierarch Alexei of Moscow.
The history of Orthodox Mongolia of the nineteenth–early twentieth centuries acquaints us with the great spiritual labors of a number of priests who bound together the churches of the Irkutsk Diocese, Transbaikalia, Mongolia and China, and in most cases remained faithful to God to the death. And if readers have a desire to pray for the repose of the souls of the Orthodox clergy of Urga, it would be the best tribute to Archpriests John, Mily and Fyodor, Hieromonks Sergei, Gerontius and Cornelius, Priests Alexei, Vsevolod, and two Nicholases.
In February 1998, Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations, in a letter to His Eminence Innokenty, Bishop of Chita and Transbaikalia, written on the occasion of the appointment of permanent rector to Ulaanbaatar and in gratitude to Priest Oleg Matveyev, who had temporarily pastored the Orthodox faithful in Mongolia, expressed the hope that “in the future the spiritual bonds traditionally uniting the Orthodox parishes of Transbaikalia and Mongolia will be preserved.” [12] Today the Holy Trinity Parish of Ulaanbaatar has strong friendly relations with the Orthodox parishes of the Buryat Metropolia, with the clergy concelebrating and parishioners making mutual pilgrimages. To date, a strong multinational and multilingual community has developed in Mongolia on the basis of a single Orthodox parish, which should become the foundation and model for further missionary work in this country.

My 4yo son is in a part-time preschool (3 days a week, half days). We didn't do daycare or preschool until he turned 4 and the change in environment was a big adjustment but my son has done well all things considered. The school is constantly "encouraging" me to model the school environment at home and that's just simply not going to happen. We have lives to live, I'm not converting my home into some classroom boot camp. I don't even think that kind of model is healthy and I feel like I'm teaching him to be more emotionally dysfunctional to better blend into a dysfunctional system and is that really a win? I can't delude myself into believing it is.
This is the 2nd school we have tried. The first was full-time and the admin was very abusive to my son, singled him out, kept him in the hallway all day without structured consequences or clear communication, forced him to wear a weighted vest after only a week even though it would give him panic attacks...it was traumatizing for us both. The school we are at now agreed that his adjustment to school had been met with an extreme response in that case and said they wouldn't treat him like that. The admin is fantastic and is very supportive of homeschooling. Her own grands are homeschooled...but I just had the most bizarre parent teacher conference that really shook me to my core and I don't know if I'll even finish out the school year after this.
The teacher said my son outperformed on his evaluation, knows all the material and said he's "holding back" from showing what he's capable of in class which is fantastic HOWEVER...the conversation drifted into the parenting strategy vein and what the teacher said shocked me. She said she is a very no-nonsense mom and she tells her kids they aren't allowed to cry in public, only when they get in the car. She said her daughter was severely injured in a softball game, bit back her tears until she could get off the field and then asked her, "Can I cry now?" And then she was given permission to cry.
I must have looked at her like she had fourteen noses because I was horrified. All I could think was, well that's toxic! How the hell do you think training your kids to repress their emotions could ever be a good thing??? Especially when you just got struck in the leg by a softball going 60mph? Crying seems like more than reasonable response.
As a kid who had an emotionally constipated mother, I highly value the SKILL of being vulnerable, articulating feelings even in the height of emotion, and not bottling things up. It's a core pillar of good communication in our house. We take space when we need it obviously, but we don't push out our support system. My husband and I unlearned that through blood, sweat and tears and I don't want my kids ever feeling like they can't express hurt over something as uncontrollable as PAIN. She also said she teaches her kids not to need or depend on anyone, and I'm like okay...to a point yes, but once again family, community and support systems are huge pillars of our values. We lean on each other and it's not a weakness.
I just felt like at the end of the conversation I saw how fundamentally different our values for life are. A lot of it may be generational. I just can't imagine bragging that my kids held in their cry until they got to the car. I'd feel like a monster if I said that out loud. I understand now why my son has been so emotionally bottled up at the end of his school day. He doesn't feel safe around that teacher and honestly, neither do I. I'm sick of all these educators overstepping into some kind of surrogate mother role and undermining all the work I've done to get my son to an emotionally healthy place.
I feel like I can't trust anyone to really love my babies and care for their well-being like I do. I know there are good teachers, we had a great one in the first semester but she moved positions. You just never know what you're going to get...or WHO you're going to get when it comes to teachers. Both the parent and the teacher show up to the table assuming their "normal" is the other person's "normal" when in reality we couldnt be more opposite.
It just feels like the chasm between developmental child psychology and the school system is widening every day. They don't even hold hands anymore. I think I'm finally done.

My husband and I are Jewish. We have an 8 month old daughter who will be 1 when she starts daycare. There's a really amazing Jewish day school connected to our Synagogue that we have the option to send her to. I personally know the director and it's very close knit, however I'm terrified that with the rise in antisemitism that my daughters life could be at risk. Last year the Synagogue was targeted and loitered with swatistikas.
My husband went to another Jewish day school in the area growing up, during a time when antisemitism wasn't even half the threat it is now, and still when he was 6 years old they had to evacuate the school because the FBI discovered a plot to shoot up the school, found guns buried on campus and swastikas sprayed onto the sidewalks.
The preschool we would be sending our daughter to does not have armed security like his did growing up. Like any parent I'm terrified of getting a call that my daughter has been shot up at school. Especially more so that Jews are the most targeted ethnoreligion in the United States especially after October 7th and what we see happening on college campuses right now that absolutely terrifies us.
Do we try to blend her into a normal daycare or give her the Jewish education we want her to have? What would you do?

==This is very long. I write very long things. Sorry. I'll try to do a tl;dr at the end.==
(I think the trigger warning is because of a brief acknowledgment of the existence of self-harm toward the end.)
We live in Michigan I first met this woman online in 2015 while she lived in Nebraska, but she relocated to me in 2017, in 2019 we were married, and how, when she's doing this, we have a son, and she was as integral a part of her step-son's life as his bio mother to that other boy for seven years. I'll just call her Marie.
Marie was the most wonderful, sweetest woman I've ever met, and she made me feel more positive about myself than I ever have. It surprises a lot of people because I come across as confident, but I seriously lack self-esteem. She would constantly compliment me, do things for me, tell me how much she loved me, how handsome I was, and how much she loved listening to me talk about this thing or the other. We were constantly touching and sending secret signals of affection and, because we both worked from home, she and I would do so across the room all day, talking and loving each other. Then, with the kids, our son was born just before the pandemic, and our family of four was perfect. I was constantly told what a wonderful father I am, and how much she enjoyed everything we did as a family--dinner, trips, playtime, school events, sports. Even before our younger came along, Marie was like a mother to my son, and he loved her so, so much. As random examples, they had a longtime imagination game that they played together for hours on end, they were constantly hugging and telling each other they loved each other, and when it was Mother's Day, he would make her a card just the same as his bio mom.
It is no exaggeration to say that in all the years we were together, I cannot recall a single actual fight. Maybe we had a disagreement once a year (seriously), but even that was resolved within five to ten minutes. She was so wonderful, and typing this is difficult to do because I still love her so much.
Never in a million, zillion years would I think she would leave, let alone so abruptly and coldly. That is to say, she left me two days ago without any notice (texting me that she loved me and about our son mere hours before she was blindsiding me, declaring there was nothing to talk about, and carrying a suitcase of her stuff and our younger son's stuff for her parents' house) and did it as cruelly and selfishly as I have ever seen anyone do anything. And she was my everything. We were each other's soulmate and best friend. We couldn't have been happier.
For my part, I treated her as a queen, constantly telling her how much I loved her, how beautiful and sexy she was, and how wonderful and amazing she was as a person and a mommy, and I meant every word of it. There is literally not a single goddamn thing I would not have done for her.
Which makes all this hurt so much more.
Now, because of a particular medication I get from Mary Jane on an MMJ card, I cannot get a firearm because of federal law. Around the time of the pandemic, my wife and I bought a gun safe and my father-in-law lent me his Heckler & Koch because nobody knew what the hell was going on with anything in those first stages in March, and I wanted to be able to protect my family, just in case. I programmed the gun safe, stowed the gun, and that was the sum total of my experience with it, other than to check every eight or nine months to make sure it was still there. Heh.
But recently, my father-in-law asked for it back, saying he needed to do some maintenance on it, that he would do so and get it right back to me. So I happily gave it to him and waited. And waited.
This past weekend, we went to her parents' house to celebrate birthdays and I was looking forward to it, because I loved her parents like my own. My own parents did, too. It was amazing how well the families blended together, that, contrary to all the cliches, not only did the spouses get along with the in-laws, but our parents were friends, and we all celebrated everything together, regularly.
Toward the end of the visit, her dad sat down with me and then apropos of nothing, seriously questioned my mental health (and no, I have no idea why--I see a psychiatrist for depression, and I have since professional school, but I can't recall ever telling him that), and with my preschooler sitting on my lap and hearing every word.
When I asked for the gun back, he said he thought I was more likely to massacre my family and he didn't want to feel responsible for that. That upset me and I told him. I explained (angrily but politely) that, among all other things involving Trump, Biden, the right wing, the left wing, random burglars, etc., that because there was some Jewish heritage in my family, that meant I wanted to be extra ready in case his grandson, step-grandson (whom they were always great in treating like their own) or Marie faced any problems or were in any way targeted for the small percentage of Jewishness in their lives. At that point, and I can't remember the exact words because I was so shocked, he, a former pastor and a man I looked up to as my absolute authority on all things religion because of his knowledge, gentleness, and goodness, conveyed to me that the antisemitism concerns were overblown because he himself was a Jew, having decided that his religion commanded him to love everyone, especially God's so-called Chosen People, and he wasn't worried because he didn't experience any anti-semitism.
I took offense at that--probably too much, in hindsight, although I remained calm and polite--because I considered that akin to my saying that I thought Black people's fear of being pulled over at night was overblown because I love Motown and therefore am Black.
We then left, and I asked Marie to convey to him how angry and hurt I was by the mental health insult and reference to violence in front of my young son, she demurred. Since I'd known her, she had never been one to take my side in any confrontation, because she "didn't like confrontation," and refused to advocate for me. So this time, I told her how important it was and she sent a barebones email to my father-in-law referencing how upset *I* was (not *we*) and how inappropriate *I* found the comments.
It took almost 18 hours before he responded, and he did so with a dismissive swipe and insult to my own family that he "didn't want to go point by point" because his family didn't ever argue or raise their voices or whatever. That was essentially it.
A very short email from Marie, and an extremely delayed, dismissive email from my father-in-law.
This offended me even more, and this time I wrote him, castigating him for his tone, his dismissal of every way I believed he'd insulted me as too unimportant or too beneath him to respond, and his total disregard for my feelings--I was also now hurt that it was so unimportant to him to respond that he couldn't be bothered to do so for almost a day, and I think that was prompted when, on an unrelated phone call, Marie reminded him at my insistence. So when I wrote him, I was aggressive. A little less polite, because now I was angry. And, like this, I wrote a lot. It was very heartfelt. I loved this guy and looked up to him in so many ways.
No answer.
I wrote again.
No answer.
Needless to say, I think, I was beyond perturbed. And I told my wife, and she agreed, and we both said that was wrong, etc. Then the next morning, she took my son to have breakfast with him as if nothing had happened. I was very upset at this and told her that I needed her to be my advocate. That in every single fight we were ever in, she'd avoided taking my side, even when I was outnumbered in front of her, and she responded by telling me that, no, she shared "my" (as in this writer's) perspective with him. That it wasn't "our" perspective was terrible. We had another discussion--maybe one of our yearly disagreements about not going to see him, that I thought we needed to make him realize how he'd hurt me so that we could all continue along as happily as we'd been, but it was her choice. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary, and she promised, promised to contact him the next day. This past Thursday.
She didn't.
When I called to remind her at one of her infrequent not-at-home work things, she reiterated that she'd already shared "my" perspective, and, her voice completely changing to a cold and unfriendly tone I've never heard her use, told me our marriage was over.
She came home, packed a bag, and coldly, calmly, refused to tell me why. She said she did, but I must not have been there for that part. She said she was tired of "walking on eggshells" around me, but wouldn't explain what that meant besides my temper. And to clarify, my temper means once in a while snapping or being irritable once in a while, or raising my voice with my family (and then always moving on within a few minutes, because that's how we and many others are). I never yelled at her or the kids--understand that I never raised a hand or made Marie or the boys or anyone afraid of my doing that. In fact, it was an affectionate longtime joke between us that I was her "Grumpy Bear" and that I would never ever be cross with her.
But she wouldn't explain, saying, once again, she'd told me everything and "there is nothing left to say." I pleaded and groveled and, to my embarrassment, sobbed uncontrollably, begging her not to do that, but she did. With no emotion or willingness to engage me beyond telling me that she's not loved me for a long time.
There was no explanation. This was a woman who was exactly the same in affection and words and actions with everything. I never saw a single sign. We had just done family stuff and were going to do more. She told me she loved me over and over, as I did her, in that same wonderful warm tone of hers that I miss so much.
Before she left, I desperately pursued the idea of counseling, and she agreed, but I could tell right then it wasn't going to happen.
Since then, I've poured my heart out to her over text messages. Begging for an explanation. Telling her how I would have done anything, changed anything, said anything, loved her any way she needed, if she had only told me. She built me up and made me feel so good about myself in a way that I never had, and when I begged her to at least help me not hate myself, she said nothing in response. She ignores my calls (she did pick up once or twice and remained silent when I pleaded with her to tell me what happened, why I shouldn't hate myself, etc.) and my texts.
Just as I did when it was first happening, I tell her that her step-son, a child who's loved her for years, is going to be devastated that she could do this to the family, and our son together was going to suffer, and please, please, won't she talk to me? To let me know what happened? I kept begging for counseling. This was all over text. Finally, I got a two-line email: our marriage was irretrievably broken/couldn't be fixed (I thought it was the greatest relationship I'd ever seen and proudly told people that, I loved her so much) and that she wouldn't do counseling. There was nothing further.
Interlude. Years ago, my father-in-law was unfaithful to my mother-in-law. I never pried into the details. It took a lot of counseling and hard work, but they're together decades later and I presume very happy. All over the Internet, when I look for stories like mine, they all inevitably reference therapy not working, having given counseling a shot, etc., and many of these are men (or women) who've done violence to each other or their children, slept around, or refused to address a debilitating habit or attitude.
These people did horrible things in their relationships, and *they* got a chance to fix things. I, who didn't know anything about what happened, who, to the moment that I type this, don't have the slightest idea what happened, what she was or is thinking, why I shouldn't blame myself, what about me was ever truly worth compliment, and what was she was faking (she admitted in one syllable that she faked her love for me "for a while"). Why shouldn't I hate myself? What happened? Why, when I loved her so impossibly much, did I not even get the courtesy of responses to my frantic, desperate and passionate texts? As said, no response. She ignores or screens my calls, and the only texts she will respond to are those when I ask questions about the separation itself, like what to do with things and insurance things.
Marie texted my first ex-wife (Goddammit, I hate saying that, because I cannot see anything I did to cause this immediate thing, and my divorce was one that followed months or years of disharmony but has now become a good friendship) to tell her and Marie's step-ston. Without me. Marie then told our preschooler without me. I have no idea how she did it beyond a basic "I did it" (and in fairness to her, an acknowledgment that she should not have done it). She has destroyed these little boys (though one's almost a teenager), and I have absolutely no answers when, for the first time in days, I get to see the younger boy who's always lived with me/us and he says how sad he is that we don't get to be a family any more. Why is that, Daddy? And then I have to keep myself as best I can from breaking down in front of him. It was one of my nights with him on Thursday, and I could see how horrible and how hurt and betrayed my step-son was. He had been abandoned without so much as a "goodbye" by a woman he loved and played with almost every day for seven years. My mother is crushed, too, since Grandma loved Marie like a daughter, saw how much we loved each other, and talked to her every single day like mom/daughter, but when my younger left to go back with his mom (there's a whole sleeping anxiety with him I don't want to get into so I can stay under my 100,000 word limit), Grandma was sobbing uncontrollably in a way I'd never, ever seen before and want to never, ever see again.
I don't know what to do. I still love her with all my heart, even though she's been the cruelest person I've ever known to do this to me and the boys, especially without being willing to even explain it so I understand and we can talk with the boys together and I can feel like there's a reason to believe any of those wonderful things she made me believe about me, our family, and our future.
Part of the reason that I'm writing this, in fact, is in the hope that she'll see it and know how much I love her. I'd forgive her in a heartbeat and welcome her back as the happiest thing I've ever done. I would do or say or love whatever or however she needed. I told her with obvious hyperbole but complete seriousness, that if she told me she needed me to castrate myself, I'd consider it. That's how devoted to her I am. But I haven't gotten a response.
Note that, because she and I spent every single minute together, and I am a naturally (and surprisingly, because I very much enjoy public speaking in front of huge crowds and work a room like/as a sociable politician) an introvert, I don't have any friends to rely on. My job is such that I do it all, and all either of us ever needed was each other. I don't even know how to make friends any more. (I know that many readers' gut instinct will be to hone in on this and make suggestions or target this as their focus, but what I really need help with is Marie.)
I don't know what to do. Seeing my sons and my mom so upset when I'm experiencing the worst pain I've ever felt--and I sincerely pray that whoever reads this never ever goes through anything like this--kills me, and without exaggeration, I want to simply curl up and die. Just...stop being. (Self-harm isn't a worry because I would never do anything to hurt my kids or my family like that.)
I truly cannot see any way I can exist without this person. She is my absolute everything and the center of my universe. My family is, as I constantly tell her and others, my greatest treasure and the only thing that really matters to me in life--Marie and the boys. I am an excessively proud man, but I would get down on my hands and knees and express contrition for things I never did or would do (or knew I did?), if she would only let me talk to her.
But it's still silence.
I can't sleep, I haven't eaten since this happened, I'm constantly vomiting, and I'm sobbing to the point of dehydration. I have no plans for the future that don't involve her, and, honestly, I don't want them. I love this woman with all my heart and if she would only tell me how to fix this, I would do it no matter what. But it's still silence, and I don't know what to do.
Please, Marie/Redditors, help me.
