I made a post about this before. Previously, I thought that the game should have a gritty feel, but I have reconsidered. The last few VFs have gone in a direction of increased realism, but what if we go in the opposite direction?
Recently, I was listening to some old music tracks from VF2/3, and I thought about how vibrant the early VFs were. We should bring back the old school feel. Bring back the catchy, 80s pop music. Make some stages beautiful and other stages dark. This would spice up the game and satisfy veteran fans along with the new generation. The VF story starts in the early 90s, so they can highlight that time period with the music and character designs. They can also incorporate minor Sci-Fi elements with the "Judgement 6/Dural" story.
To be clear, this does not mean that VF should turn into an anime game. I stick by the view that the gameplay should remain relatively grounded. But the vibrant, 90s old school theme might be the best way to distinguish VF from Tekken, DOA, and SF in presentation. What do you think about VF returning to that style?
Characters: I already mentioned new characters in my previous post, but I have some more ideas.
1) A German man regarded as the head of the J6 fighters. He is sort of the "face" of the organization that pulled strings behind the scenes. I picture him as a cross between Benny Urquidez and Lee Chaolan. Ear-length, sandy brown hair and blue eyes. Slim build and nimble. He wears a formal dress shirt with a tie. He's personable, but has a hint of bitterness. He uses Kempo Karate with Taekwondo.
2) An "Indigenous" Mexican fighter that uses boxing and folkstyle wrestling. Medium brown skin and neck length black hair (sometimes in a ponytail). He's heavyset. He has a stoic demeanor, yet comes off as heroic and kind. He wears a brown and black Native design, opened button shirt. Instead of kicking, his "K" command is tied to heavy hooks, overhands, uppercuts. He should also have a few street moves like headbutts, elbows, and knees.
3) A Canadian martial arts instructor. He is a "master" of Goju Ryu Karate. Dark brown hair, a mullet, and a Burt Reynolds style mustache. VF's first joke character. He runs a McDojo that he's trying to put on the map. He wears a well-designed red, black, and white gi. He's a big man. His style has heavy strikes and Judo-ish throws, but occasionally has bad technique. He takes himself seriously, but has some humor. He also uses "dishonest" moves like eye pokes, groin shots, and biting.
4) A very young man from China that uses Eagle Claw Kung Fu. He's in his late teens or early 20s and is around the same size as Lion. He looks like a normal, unassuming guy. He wears a sleeveless shirt and Kung Fu pants. Regular haircut, and wears glasses in his player 2 outfit. His fighting gives some Jackie Chan vibes, but without the humor. He's quite agile and acrobatic.
The wait for a VF reboot has been difficult, but I hope the developers give us something fairly unique. What do you think of the ideas?

In what is becoming a worrying tradition, The Authority make their way to the ring to kick off the show. Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, Corporate Kane, and The New Age Outlaws are out first. Stephanie introduces the UNDISPUTED WWE World Heavyweight Champion ---- RANDALL KEITH ORTON! Orton walks out with his arm in a sling and soaks in a very negative reaction. Triple H and Stephanie take turns talking up Randy Orton's accomplishments like proud parents. They unveil a new championship; the World Heavyweight and WWE titles have been merged into a modernized version of the classic Winged Eagle design. Triple H straps the new title around Orton's waist and the fans chant "CM PUNK!" Stephanie reacts to the chants by informing everyone that due to his threats of violence, CM Punk has been barred from the building tonight. That is not a popular decision in Oklahoma. Triple H demands the fans shut their spoiled mouths and acknowledge that there’s a new definition of greatness. Orton takes the microphone but the boo's are deafening and he declines to speak until the fans quiet down.
Orton finally talks, managing to say "Welcome to the era of greatness. The era that is best for business. You cheer for guys like CM Punk and Daniel Bryan, but they don't measure up to me on their best day." Daniel Bryan's music hits and the arena breaks out into a massive YES chant. Bryan reminds Orton that he stole that championship from him at Summerslam with the help of Triple H. The American Dragon wonders how long Orton is going to hide behind The Authority, security and fake injuries. If Orton really believes himself to be the standard of greatness, why are The Authority doing everything in their power to make sure he doesn't have to stand across from Daniel Bryan at Wrestlemania 30? "I won the Royal Rumble and I will win the Elimination Chamber, so while you're sitting at home watching me be the champion you pretend to be, I want you to remember one thing: I AM INEVITABLE!" Orton shakes his head and says Bryan will never learn. His injury is 100% legitimate and he doesn't owe anybody an explanation. Orton says the only person watching from home is CM Punk! And tonight, Punk can watch Daniel Bryan in the main event .... against an opponent of Orton's choosing. Bryan welcomes the challenge and says his opponents blood will be on Orton's hands.
Divas Champion AJ Lee comes down and joins commentary ahead of the Gauntlet Match.

Kaitlyn and Eva Marie are our first competitors. Kaitlyn makes quick work of Eva, hitting a Spear for the pinfall elimination.

Tamina Snuka is out next and she attacks Kaitlyn from behind after a distraction by AJ. We come back from commercial to see Kaitlyn take Tamina down with a baseball slide on the outside. Kaitlyn is in control until AJ throws some water at her and Tamina takes advantage by sending Kaitlyn face first into the ringpost! Tamina throws Kaitlyn back in the ring and hits a devastating Samoan Drop for the 3 count.

Aksana is out next but she doesn't really stand a chance. Tamina is like a cat playing with a mouse. She mercy kills Aksana with a Samoan Drop for another elimination.

Naomi hits the ring and gives Tamina a run for her money. She connects with the Rear View but Tamina kicks out at two. Naomi goes to the 2nd turnbuckle but Tamina takes her head off in mid air with a big boot! Tamina scales the ropes --- SUPERFLY SPLASH! 1-2-3!

Mickie James is out next to a great reaction! Mickie takes the fight to Tamina and knocks her down with a dropkick from the 2nd rope. Tamina goes for a powerbomb but James rolls through with a sunset flip and gets a 2 count! Mickie attempts the Stratusfaction but Tamina yanks her down by the hair! Mickie crawls to the corner where Tamina smashes her with a running hip attack! Tamina climbs to the top and leaps off with a Superfly Splash but Mickie rolls out of the way! MICK KICK! 1-2-3!

Brie Bella is next and she shakes Mickie's hand as a sign of respect. They have a good back and forth, countering big moves, and securing some nearfalls. But Mickie's championship lust overwhelms her opponent, she hits Brie Bella with the Stratusfaction and gets the pin.

Nikki Bella is the final competitor and she pounces on Mickie right away with a Bella Buster! Mickie kicks out! Nikki goes for the TKO but AJ Lee gets on the apron for a distraction. Tamina comes out of nowhere with a Superkick but Brie Bella jumps in the way, sacrificing herself for her sister! Mickie and Nikki dropkick Tamina from the ring and then Nikki Bella ducks a kick and rolls James up for the 3 count!
Result- Nikki Bella wins. (12:32)
We get a recap of The Ascension's debut last week as well as their bone chilling warning to Cody Rhodes and Goldust. Konnor and Viktor make their way to the ring for tag team action.

Konnor viciously tosses Diego over the ropes and into the barricade! Fall of Man to Fernando! 1-2-3!
Result- Konnor pins Fernando via Fall of Man. (00:35)
El Torito gets in the ring to check on Fernando but The Ascension attack the little guy and hit The Fall of Man to him as well!
We see a video package of John Cena training for the Elimination Chamber. He says this is the most barbaric and painful match he's ever been in and if he wants to main event Wrestlemania, he has a tall task ahead of him. Cena talks about his five opponents at No Way Out and while he has the most experience inside the Chamber, he's not taking anyone lightly.
It's time for The Highlight Reel with Chris Jericho. He welcomes WWE Intercontinental Champion Big E Langston to the show and says last week they suffered a loss against The Shield when Seth Rollins pinned Big E. Fans have been pointing to the fact that Jericho didn't break up the pin but Y2J assures Big E that he had the best of intentions, it's just that The Shield is a different beast entirely. They don't stop fighting and when Jericho saw Big E get hit with Dirty Deeds and the Curb Stomp, he knew their night was over.
Big E snatches the microphone and says being champion means there's a target on his back. He doesn't buy Jericho's explanation and he won't make the mistake of trusting him again. Jericho turns a bit nasty, showing his true colours, and says young ignorant up and comers like Big E make him sick. Y2J is a legend in this business and is respected industry wide.
Jericho was hoping to put this little miscommunication behind them but now he see's that Langston's ego is just as big as his muscles.
SIERRA. HOTEL. INDIA. ECHO. LIMA. DELTA. SHIELD
United States Champion Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns come through the crowd as Big E prepares for a fight. Rollins has a microphone and tells Big E that next week he's taking the Intercontinental Title. As for this week, they want a pound of flesh. The Shield surround the ring like hyenas ---- JERICHO SMASHES BIG E IN THE BACK WITH A STOOL! Y2J dashes out of the ring and heads up the ramp with a big shit eating grin as The Shield pounce on Big E.
BROOKLYN! BROOKLYN! IT'S CRYME TYME!
Shad Gaspard has returned to the WWE alongside his partner JTG! Shad boots Jericho in the head for good measure as Cryme Tyme charge the ring! Big E has some back up; he and Cryme Tyme send Roman from the ring, followed by Ambrose! Shad lifts Rollins up on his shoulders but Ambrose and Reigns pull Seth to safety and retreat through the crowd. Big E holds up the Intercontinental Title and poses with Shad and JTG much to the fans excitement.
John Cena, Cody Rhodes, and Goldust vs. The Wyatt Family
Goldust and Cody attack Luke Harper and Erick Rowan before the bell rings and brawl all over ringside! Cena and Wyatt to face off in the middle of the ring. Cena with a snap suplex on Wyatt but Bray kicks out at 1 and does his spider walk! Cena is freaked out and backs into the corner to rethink his game plan. Bray clobbers Cena and makes the tag to Harper after things settle down on the outside. Harper and Rowan make quick tags and isolate Cena but they go to well one too many times --- Cena with a double DDT to take both monsters down!
Cena tags in Cody Rhodes! Cody runs wild --- Alabama Slam to Harper! Disaster Kick to Rowan! Wyatt tags in and cuts off Cody's momentum with a nasty uppercut. Wyatt goes for Sister Abigail but Cody hits a neckbreaker and kips up! He's fired up babeh! Tag to Goldust. Wyatt charges at Goldust --- right into a lightning quick powerslam! Wyatt rolls out of the ring to recoup with Harper and Rowan. John Cena flies off the top rope and crashes onto all three members of The Wyatt Family on the outside!
Back in the ring we get a chaotic rush of attacks to close out the match; Erick Rowan flattens Goldust but gets hit with a Cross Rhodes! Wyatt clubs Cody from behind and hits a Sister Abigail. Cena scoops Wyatt up for an AA but eats a boot by Harper. Wyatt knocks Cena out of the ring as Harper drops Goldust with a brutal Lariat! 1-2-3! The Wyatt Family win.
Result- Luke Harper pins Goldust via Harpoon Lariat. (14:16)
We see a video of The Real Americans and Zeb Colter challenging Luke Harper and Erick Rowan to a tag team match next week on RAW after the Swampmen ruined Cesaro and Jack Swagger's title opportunity last week.
Josh Matthews is backstage with Hunico and Camacho. They talk about their beef with Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara --- Hunico is now calling himself the mask collector. He promises to be the nail in the coffin of Mysterio's career and anyone who gets in his way will be dealt with accordingly.
Daniel Bryan is taping his wrists backstage ahead of the main event. William Regal enters and greets his former protege but Bryan is laser focused on kicking someone's head and tells Regal they can catch up later. Regal wishes Bryan good luck out there and pats him on the back as The American Dragon heads for the ring.
Main Event- Daniel Bryan vs. Bad News Barrett
Randy Orton appears on the titantron to give Bryan the BAD NEWS. This starts Barrett's loose association with The Authority from here on out. Barrett was in a tough place, facing a suspension after attacking a referee, when The Authority offered to forget about it and help him back into title contention. His first opportunity is a big main event against Bryan.
These two men share quite a bit of history with NXT and The Nexus just a few years back. The match begins with them exchanging stiff elbows and uppercuts in the middle of the ring. Bryan with some stiff chest kicks until Barrett catches a breather with a short arm clothesline. Barrett stomps Bryan in the corner, choking him viciously. The ref pulls him off so Barrett whips Bryan across the ring --- Bryan moonsaults off the turnbuckle, lands on his feet, and hits a big head kick! He takes a turn stomping Barrett, chokes him in the corner, and yells at the referee that he has "UNTIL FIVE!" The Yes Movement is in full effect as Bryan charges up for the Busaiku Knee but Barrett hits The Winds of Change! 1-2-Bryan kicks out. Barrett is pissed. He traps Bryan in the corner and hits a barrage of knees to the ribs and head. Barrett tries for a superplex but Bryan reverses into a Guillotine Choke on the ropes! The referee tries again for Bryan to break the hold but The American Dragon uses every bit of his 5 second count.
Barrett falls out of the ring so Bryan runs and leaps off the apron! A knee right to Barrett's chin sends him flying over the barricade, into the front row! Bryan rolls in the ring to break the count and then goes out to get Barrett. Bad News shoves a fan at Bryan and then cheapshots him to gain control. Barrett throws Bryan into the ring and goes for the Bullhammer but Bryan ducks and hits a bridging German! 1-2-NO!
William Regal appears on the stage and slowly walks down to the ring. Bryan and Barrett exchange strikes until Bryan locks in the YES LOCK! Barrett is screaming in pain and manages to crawl to the ropes; again Bryan waits until 5 to break the hold. The referee argues with Bryan as we see Regal slide something into Barrett's elbow pad! Bryan charges up for the Busaiku Knee again but this time Regal gets on the apron for the momentary distraction ---- BARRETT TAKES BRYAN'S HEAD OFF WITH A BULLHAMMER! BRYAN IS OUT COLD! BARRETT DROPS AN ARM OVER HIM! 1-2-3!
Result- Bad News Barrett wins by pinfall via Bullhammer with a loaded elbow pad. (16:32)
William Regal helps Barrett to his feet to celebrate this momentous win. Bryan is still unconscious as Regal steps over his body with a bittersweet look on his face. The announcers wonder why on earth Regal has seemingly struck a deal with The Authority as RAW goes off the air with Bryan being checked on by officials.

“You said enough.” The rag splashed into the basin. He hated her in that moment- hated her, hated himself, and hated this heat. He struggled into his sticky white undershirt and reached for his uniform jacket. Then why do you keep coming back? He thought. He paused, and she took advantage of his moment of indecision to wrap her arms around him.
He stiffened as he felt her robe fall open against his back. “You don’t have to go back to work just yet-” she cooed playfully. He stared straight ahead as her hand drifted south of his belt buckle. She tiptoed up to reach his ear “- and my husband won’t be back until tonight.” His shoulders jerked roughly and she fell back.
“Ow, you big ox!” she yelped. She put her finger to her lip. “Look what you did!” He started to button his tunic again. He picked up one of his boots, gingerly stepping over her as she sat spread-eagled on the rough floor. She swatted him on the ass as he passed. “You coulda busted my lip!”
He found the other boot by the door and forced his foot into the aging leather. He straightened his badge as he stood. “So call the cops,” he leered as he slipped out the door. She threw her slipper at him, but he let the door slam shut behind him. He hurried down the grimy staircase, dropping out into the dirty sunshine.
He straightened his uniform, but froze as the black bells began to chime.

Austin to St. Louis
First, the website didn't tell us about the track repair project between Fort Worth and Longview, until 24 hours after we purchased the tickets online, thereby preventing us from canceling with full refund.
Then, we left Austin 4 hours late because the train had several delays before getting to San Antonio, and at that station as well.
On the way to Fort Worth, the train stopped several times because of a freight train taking over the tracks, and one time because a UPRR freight train was stopped at the crossing in front of us, about 2 miles from Fort Worth. Something about a water line breaking, which had to be fixed before that train could get our of the way. Now we were at 6 hours behind schedule.
Then, the 3 hour bus drive to Longview took 2 hours, which was a nice change. At this point, it was pretty late at night and the highway was clear. But that hour of gained time was spent at Longview station. The fresh train pulled into the station an hour later. It seemed to me that the train should have been waiting there for us, since it was held up by us? Anyway, while we waited, a UPRR train came through and stopped for awhile too. Might have been cause for more delays?
Then we got on the new train, now 7 hours behind schedule. We got some sleep in our sleeper car and woke up to learn that we had been delayed an hour in Texarcana as well, while we had slept.
It could have been worse, and I love riding the train. It's just been a lot of time lost on our trip and we had to cancel some things.

This took several weeks as the rankers tiered each position group and discussed them. There were no individual player threads and no arbitrary position caps. Just questions and rankings.

#100 - Stefon Diggs - Buffalo Bills - Wide Receiver

Following yet another offseason of cryptic tweets and drama, Stefon Diggs showed up from the onset of the 2023 season as red hot as the lasers he was catching off the arm of Josh Allen - making it clear he came to play and leave everything out on the field. However, 2023 was a tale of two Diggs’ - and that's not a reference to Stefon's brother, Trevon, who unfortunately was out for the season prior to their two teams facing off in week 15.
Through the first 6 games of the year, Stefon Diggs was averaging 8 catches, 104 Yards, and nearly a touchdown per game. During that time, the Bills passing offense funneled the ball through Diggs and relied on his ability to make plays all over the field to remain productive. Diggs answered the call and delivered the type of results we've come to expect of him, however just like the team itself, Diggs’ season would fall off pretty harshly following the team's week 6 match up against the Giants. In the 11 remaining games of the season, he failed to produce a single 100-yard outing and would only catch 3 more total touchdowns on the year. It's important to acknowledge that the Bills as a whole struggled offensively between weeks 5 and 10, directly leading to Offensive Coordinator Ken Dorsey's firing after Buffalo’s week 10, 24-22, loss to Denver - a game in which Diggs only caught 3 passes for a total of 34 yards.
Once Joe Brady stepped in as Interim Coordinator, the Bills offense began healing as a result of changes made to their strategy, changes which resulted in a more balanced attack that trusted the run game and prioritized spreading passes around to a wider selection of targets in the air. This shift meant Diggs was on the field less, in addition to receiving less targets when he was out there running routes. The impact of this change is most plainly obvious when comparing Diggs’ stats from weeks 1-8 to 9-16. While this adjustment ultimately worked out in Buffalo's favor (they would close out the last 7 games of the year with a 6-1 record), it did drive an unfortunate statistical drop for Diggs. Diggs would still flash his elite hands and skills often enough to finish the season respectively though, earning a spot in the pro-bowl as well as finishing #13 in total receiving yards and #7 in total receptions. Tragically, what he will probably be remembered most for this past year (at least in the minds of Bills Mafia) will be the ugly, game-altering drop he had late in the Divisional round matchup against Kansas City.
Throughout 2023 there were all manner of rumors on whether Diggs was playing through an undisclosed injury or experiencing a falling out with the organization, true or not, it would be foolish to claim that Diggs isn't still a premier pass catcher in the NFL. Now a Houston Texan, Stefon Diggs will serve as another weapon for C.J. Stroud to take advantage of in 2024. Assuming he doesn't destroy the culture in Houston by manifesting into some sort of target-hoovering diva-demon like all the tired sports media personalities predict, expect the former Bills Captain to be a key contributor for the Texans next year.

#99 - Lavonte David - Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Off-Ball Linebacker

After flirting with retirement and leaving Tampa Bay last offseason, Lavonte David stuck around for another year as a Buccaneer - year 12 (and soon to be year 13). And it paid off, yet again, as David stayed the impactful, complete LB he has been for over a decade.
Playing 956 (98%) defensive snaps, David was impactful across the board, recording 99 tackles (134 combined per pfr) with a 5.7% missed tackle rate, 4.5 sacks with 19 total pressures on only 76 pass rush opportunities, 5 forced incompletions and 1.1 yards per cover snap, and a ridiculous 61 run stops and 17 TFLs. His coverage stats took a bit of a dip from the past, but he was still solid while being incredibly impactful against the run. He's smart - see here how he diagnoses quickly, and beats the blocker to the spot before sticking the TE for a loss. He's exceptional at slithering through OLs - see here and here how he uses his speed and awareness to split through holes in the line and finish the play before it can start. Despite being 33, he's still really fast - if you're late on rotating in pass protection, he's already past you and sacking the QB. And he's always had a nose for the football.
David has been one of my favorite players of the 2010s and it will be sad to see him go. Few LBs are as complete as Lavonte has been for his career - he can do everything you want from an offball LB. Given that he's likely to retire pretty soon, this might be the last time he appears on this list, so I'm gonna break the rules a bit. Lavonte has always stood out statistically in two ways, by forcing fumbles and TFLs. As for FFs, the only LB with more is Cornelius Bennett, who was somewhat of a hybrid rushbacke4-3 OLB. Which means that among true off ball LBs, nobody has forced more fumbles than Lavonte David (tbf only tracked reliably since 1993). Similarly, I've never seen a player as adept at slicing through blockers to make a TFL. He has 160 career TFLs, 9th all time. No other offball LB is in the top 20, and only 4 other LBs have even 100. We might as well start giving out the "Lavonte David award" to whoever leads LBs in TFLs.
Put him in the HOF, cowards.

#98 - Bradley Chubb - Miami Dolphins - EDGE Rusher

One word has followed Chubb throughout his career: Dynamic. Coming into his second year in a Dolphins jersey off a five-year, $110 million contract extension (recently restructured in the wake of injury)—Chubb managed to arguably elevate to higher levels of said dynamic play than even in previous seasons that saw him earn Pro Bowl recognition.
In 16 games this season, Chubb managed to thrive in a defense that utilized its front 7 in unconventional manners. Of the 837 snaps Chubb played: 36% of snaps against the rush, 57% against the pass, and 7% in pass coverage (top 20 in EDGE coverage snaps…over a dozen in the slot). Amongst his position, Chubb posted a top 10 pass rush win rate per ESPN along with top 15 pass rush and top 5 coverage grades per PFF respectively. This showed with 11 sacks, 73 total tackles, 44 hurries, and 6 forced fumbles (t-1^st in NFL) over the season.
Chubb has an uphill battle going into the next season with a torn ACL acquired in Week 17 against the Ravens. Still in the prime of his career and a leader within the locker room, Chubb certainly seeks to return to this level of form as soon as possible. There's a lot of money on the table for him.

#97 - Kolton Miller - Las Vegas Raiders - Offensive Tackle

Offensive tackles have always been highly sought after for one important reason; to keep their franchise quarterback healthy. Miller had a slightly different objective; keep Jimmy Garoppolo handsome, it's fine if he misses the season since he was far from a franchise quarterback; but Miller excelled, allowing the least pressures (only 16 pressures per PFF, compared to 18 for Tyron Smith and Trent Williams) out of any premier tackle. While he missed a few games due to a shoulder injury, Miller put in enough work to prove he's a top 100 player in the league.
Always one of the more underappreciated OTs in the league, Miller's impact was best felt by his absence; in the first missed game of his career, Jets defenders got to Aidan O'Connell several times, and the rest of the offensive line just looked flimsy.
Combining agile, quick footwork with enough armpower to seal off some of the biggest men in the NFL, Miller quietly dominated opposing pass rushers, and #74 could even scale multiple levels on the run to help his team generate big plays. Even when it didn't seem like there was much worth fighting for, Miller never gave up hope.

The shnowman cracks the top 100 this year after a dominating performance in the trenches all season long. While offensive line play can be hard to parse and judge, Dawkins ranked 4th in the league among OTs in pass rush win rate at 93% and only allowed 1 sack. The 30-year-old from New Jersey (famously the home of the Giants and Jets) also provided numerous rare O-line highlights, such as the absolute shnowplow of a block he delivered against the Cowboys’ Damone Clark. His arguably career-best season also saw him named to the Pro Bowl for the third straight year.
The Bills shook up their skill positions on offense this off-season, but the core of the offensive line remains largely the same, and Dawkins will certainly be a leader of the unit. This off-season he signed a 3-year, $60.5 million extension, making him one of the highest-paid offensive linemen in the league. He has played in at least 15 games each season of his career so far, and Buffalo is clearly banking on his production to continue as the rest of the offense takes a new shape.
This year, Dawkins was also Buffalo's nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, due in large part to his foundation Dion's Dreamers, which provides mentoring services to troubled youth. Dawkins has become highly involved in the Buffalo community since being drafted in the 2nd round in 2017.

#95 - James Cook - Buffalo Bills - Running Back

Being a running back in Josh Allen’s offense is a bit tricky. Allen is virtually a one-man offense, willing to not only sling the rock deep but also bruise out some yards on the ground for himself. For most of Allen’s tenure in Buffalo, Bills running backs haven’t been the most productive, failing to produce a single season with more than 1,100 scrimmage yards. When Buffalo selected James Cook in the 2nd round of the draft last year, they sought to give Allen a workhorse back that could efficiently eat touches and take the load off of Allen just a bit. After a timeshare in the first year, the Bills let Devin Singletary walk and gave Cook the lead back role, and he did not disappoint.
James Cook is a true modern running back. His lightning quick acceleration allows him to hit holes hard and bounce outside if they’re plugged. He’s not the biggest or strongest back, but he can still shrug off arm tackles and churn for extra yards. Pass catching out of the backfield is a key part of his game as well, for a running back he’s very proficient at route running, catching the ball in stride, and running after the catch. He does everything you want out of a running back in the 2020’s NFL, and he rewarded the Bills with the 6th most scrimmage yards in the league. He’ll have to do quite a bit to pass his brother in career stats, but this season was a great start.

#94 - Elgton Jenkins - Green Bay Packers - Offensive Guard

One of the most powerful and positionally versatile offensive linemen in the NFL, Elgton Jenkins’ value to, and dominance on, the Packers OL has more than earned him his place on this list. Elgton is the engine that makes the Packers' run game go. Whether it be trapping, wrapping, or pulling to lead, Elgton is the Packers’ most-pulled lineman and their best (and one of THE best in the league) elevator to the second level on inside zone and duo run plays. Finally able to hunker down and stay, more or less, in the same position for a full season, Elgton was the driving influence on the Packers finishing top 10 in yards per attempt and top half in overall rushing offense, even while being near the bottom of the NFL in called run plays. It has yet to be mentioned how great he was in pass protection this year, as well. With a younger QB who at times held the ball a bit too long, Elgton allowed 0 sacks and had one of the lowest pressure rates allowed in football.
As mentioned before, Elgton is a dominant player in the run game because of the power he executes his blocks. His main weakness throughout his career has been his feet and ability to play in space, but this year he was tasked with reaching, trapping, and pulling to lead more than ever before. And as demonstrated here, he excelled in that role. The Packers were at their best when Jenkins was tasked with doubling and elevating or climbing to the second level immediately. Here, he displaces the LOS, comes off the 3T, and gets to the backer to create a lane for the back to follow into the endzone. In this example, the player engaged with the LT does not cross the LT’s face, so he quickly climbs to backer and creates a cut back lane for the back to gain 6-7 yards. As you can see, much of what the Packers did in the run game centered around 74, and he delivered time and time again.
In the pass game, Elgton used his strong anchor and well-timed striking to shut down every interior defensive lineman he faced. 0 sacks allowed, an absurdly low 4.4% pressure rate allowed, and the sheer dominance he displayed on tape has led many experts to call him a top 3 pass protecting guard in all of football. This is probably his biggest area of growth once making it to the NFL, as he always had the power in his lower half, but has improved his base and hand placement to truly stonewall any bull rushes he faces. And if you try and get cute by swimming or, god forbid, knowing your beat and jumping to swat the ball. Well, you will probably end up on your ass. He rose to the highest levels of competition, repeatedly shutting down (three examples there) the likes of Aaron Donald on a game-by-game basis.
Overall, Elgton Jenkins continues to push the established elite at the guard position, and with continued technical improvement, he looks to rise even higher on this list next season.

#93 - Will Anderson Jr - Houston Texans - EDGE Rusher

Will Anderson. What a full grown manderson. Only a rookie, but already the most electric pass rusher we've had since JJ Watt. His early season stats didn't quite show it, but since week 1 he's performed at a high rate already producing one of the top pressure rates in the league and opening up opportunities for the rest of the banderson. In four months, people went from criticizing Demeco and Caserio for trading a supposedly massive draft haul to Arizona for Anderson to realizing the incredible positive impact that the trade had. All according to planderson.
In his first season, Anderson showcased great pass rush ability, always working his way into the pocket, stuffed the run effectively, and even blocked a field goal; WAJ Swat, amirite? In fact, Lil Jon is rumored to be working on a song called "Turn Down for Wanderson", Daniels music video and all. JJ Watt is one of the all-time greats, but are the Terminator-Megawatt comparisons valid? Can Area 51 stand on the same ground as the Milkman?
(Yes, those are all real nicknames.)
Anderson's rookie year compares nicely with JJ’s , both on stat sheets and the eye test, and both got even better as the year went on; WAJ also walked away with the DROY award (though he didn't have to compete with Von Miller and... Aldon Smith?) Will he follow the same trajectory as JJ? In fact, he doesn't need to. It's fine if he doesn't. We don't need the greatest defensive end of the century, because Will Anderson is already damn good, does his job, and is certain to improve even further. Maybe he'll end with a gold jacket in Canton, maybe he won't, but we don't need that. What expectations we do have of him, he's easily exceeding, and on his current trajectory -- whether JJ-like or not -- he'll continue to exceed them for a long, long, time.

#92 - Deebo Samuel - San Francisco 49ers - Wide Receiver

Deebo Samuel's 2023 season saw him compile 1117 total yards and 12 total touchdowns in 15 games (though that 15 includes a weird injured decoy game with 0 targets, a game with 9 snaps, and a quarter in a meaningless week 18). The best metric to summarize the impact that he has on the team: the 49ers were 11-1 when Deebo played more than 33% of snaps in a game and 1-4 when he did not.
8.8 yards after the catch per reception ranked first among receivers, making this the fourth consecutive season that Deebo holds that distinction (and he was 2nd as a rookie). The ascension of Brandon Aiyuk and full season from offensive player of the year Christian McCaffrey shrunk the role of one of the league's most exciting players, but he made the most of the opportunities he got, ranking 8th in yards per target among players with 1000 yards.
The most memorable game of the year for him is undeniably his hat trick against the Eagles amidst a tense race for the 1 seed, capped off by a 46 yard all-YAC touchdown. Contrary to popular belief, this is actually not how he gets all of his touches. His longest touchdown of the season, a 54 yarder against Seattle, and one of his back shoulder TDs (a new feature off the offense this year!) put the wide in wide back to remind fans (and a couple loud players) that Deebo is more than capable of killing you on traditional routes.
This was the final season for #19 in the Bay Area (because he's changing his jersey number to 1) and he once again left it all out there, putting together enough production to clinch a spot on this list despite a diminished role.

Winners are remembered. The glory of sports comes from hoisting a trophy at the end, and everyone who touches it becomes immortal. To those who never touch it, they can still create a legacy through winning in other ways: big regular season games to get into the playoffs, and perhaps even winning a couple games in the tournament.
In this lens — losers have no space. Those who come up short get nothing. Sports are zero-sum. There are always winners and losers. Every immortality comes with a death.
Justin Simmons played 118 games with the Denver Broncos since 2016. In his rookie year, the team went 9-7 but missed the playoffs. In every subsequent season, the Broncos had a losing record. Despite his All-Pro play, Simmons never played in a meaningful football game in late December or January. In a team with a history of winning — Justin Simmons was a loser.
A ball on a memorial in 2021. Spending a weekend at charity events in the city months after getting cut. Maybe the problem is the binary. Pursuit of immortality driving everyone mad to the point of blindness. There is the trophy and that matters, but there are more things in life too. There are the connections. There are the emotions.
Justin Simmons never won a big game in Denver. He never played in one. But in 2023 — as he had done throughout his career — he proved himself worthy of immortality in the Ring high above.

The grey streaks began to turn to pinpricks of light, and a massive grey shape in the distance. As she watched, the titanic form of Thermopylae station resolved into her vision. She never thought she’d be seeing it again this soon. Vicky hefted her bag on her shoulder, feeling the Star of Terra bouncing against her uniform as she moved. It was very odd, the way people had reacted to her the last few days. Most seemed in complete awe of her, some called out to her by name. She had given polite nods, but she felt odd regardless. Most times when she was among the rank and file no one even glanced her way besides the men who thought she was attractive and, well, the women too. She just wasn’t used to being… This. As she made her way through the transport the other crew and servicemen parted for her like a wave. It got quiet when she grew near. Some people had even taken pictures of her as she passed.
“They’ll never believe I saw Victoria Brandy!” She had heard more than one person say, in different wording, too many times to count. She had been taken onboard two different ships, first the Secretary, then the Drake, and both times she had immediately been requested to report to the captain’s quarters, where praise had been heaped on her without end. It was getting old, fast, and extremely uncomfortable. She wasn’t a glory hound. If she was she wouldn’t have volunteered to fly a Drone Cutter in the first place. God alone knows how many of her flight instructors wanted her in a fighter, and she had lost count of the amount of times she had been told that she was hurting her own career. She had been fine with that, especially once she had met Jess and Kukat. For the sixth time that day she felt the soul crushing want to see her crew again, and she wondered how they were coping with this change. Both of them had been given battlefield commissions. Both of them were serving as sensor operators. She had been given her own promotion, and she hated the weight of it.
She came to the door and waited, not wanting to even see the station. Most definitely she did not want to turn around and catch anyone else fawning over her. She had had more than enough of that as well. She stood there and drifted in her own mind, remembering clutching onto Jess before boarding her transport, how Kukat had made a soft sound in her throat and how Jess had broken down into tears. What she remembered more than anything was how everyone had just been standing there, watching them. They had actually clapped when the three of them said goodbye to each other. Vicky, Jess, and Kukat, where once they were almost inseparable, were now going to be light years apart. She felt like crying all over again. For two years she had turned down promotions until this one had been forced on her, but there was nothing she could do about it now. She heard an automated voice, and braced herself for the bone vibrating chill of passing through the shield wall of the station, but it never came. For the first time she looked around, then glanced to the side, looking back at the viewport. Thermopylae’s shields, shields that had been raised for as long as the station itself had actually existed, were down. Something about that in and of itself felt completely alien to her, but then she faced forwards again. All she asked for right now was to report to the station, and not to have a big deal thrown about her arrival.
When the doors opened she knew she should have seen it coming. Flashes bombarded her from every angle even as the ramp was being lowered. Cameras were pointed her way, bright lights were shining on her from recorders, from journalists and reporters being held back by an armed security detail. She wanted to crawl away from the lights, but she merely began walking down the ramp. She was so blinded by the lights she almost ran into the man waiting for her at the end of it. She recovered just before she barged headlong into him, in fact the only thing that stopped her was seeing the vice admiral stripes on his shoulder, and the shadow of him cast by the lights.
“Commander Brandy.” The vice admiral said, leaning close over calls for her name. “Welcome to Thermopylae.”
She let her bag fall and saluted, knowing this song and dance far too well at this point from having been subjected to it so many times. “Permission to come aboard.”
“Granted.” He said, then he leaned down and picked up her bag before she could. “I am Vice Admiral Renald, second in command of Thermopylae.” He motioned towards a distant hanger door, then began walking, and Vicky immediately started keeping stride with him. She noticed he was leading her away from the cameras. “How was the trip from the front?” He asked politely.
“It went well.” She replied, keeping her eyes a bit to the ground. Once again the whispers, the looks. Renald didn’t reply, in fact, suddenly Victoria found herself keeping a brisker pace through the hanger with him. She heard several calls to ‘make a hole’ to give them room to move through, and when the doors opened to the station proper Victoria didn’t look up. She missed the zero g cockpit of the Thumper, she missed the quiet of her own thoughts when she was not on it. Subconsciously she followed the admiral’s stride, not even noticing a slight gravity change that marked a different hull she was now in. She followed the admiral’s pace through a turn, then suddenly she realized that the whispers had stopped. She looked up to find herself and the Admiral walking through an empty passage. Her shoulders almost instantly deflated, and for a moment she carried on walking, even though Renald had stopped. She looked back at him and was surprised to see the look of compassion on his face, and caught her bag as he tossed it to her.
“It’s a lot isn’t it.” He said, putting his hands on his hips and looking at her as she shouldered her pack. She only nodded in reply. She didn’t know what to say, she didn’t even know if it was ok to talk, if she was ok to talk. A rush of emotions ran at her all at once. She had barely been alone for six days. Renald waited for a few moments, then he nodded to her. She almost deflated at that moment, her shoulders sagging, and she let the weight of the last week show. She finally looked at him, and his grin was genuine, “Welcome to being a hero of the Terran Front commander.”
“With all due respect sir, the cameras are a bit much.” She said, and he laughed.
“Well, don’t worry about that garbage from here on out. Part of having your face on every broadcast in the last week means that you get the special treatment.” He said, and he motioning to the stencil on the wall. The markings of United Earth Service number 55203 was fresh and maintained, the ship name that had become part of Thermopylae underneath, the Anapolis. “This section of Thermopylae was emptied out two days ago, the crew of the Lexington was sent ship side, so you’ve got most of it to yourself. Your quarters are down there.” He pointed to the end of the hall. “Open door to the left. The Quarrel is going to be here in a few days.” He put his hand back on his hip and looked to her. “Officially as of now you are on administrative leave for three days. I heard you were cooped up in a medical ward since the Battle of the Sands.”
Vicky raised an eyebrow, “The Battle of the Sands?”
Renald shrugged his shoulders, “Something about the planet in the system, how it was just a desert. Some journalist said it and it’s kind of stuck now.” He motioned towards her room with his chin. “Anyhow you’ll have some privacy, your station has a few numbers on it if you need something. Food, new linens, a few ground pounders to toss out anyone with a camera…” He turned and started walking away. She smiled at his back.
“Thank you!” She called out, but he only raised a hand and gave a slight wave. She turned, and for the first time since her crew had left the medical ward of the Barrowmore, she heard the quiet. The only sound was a pleasant hum of the power conduits. Compared to the noise, the whispers, and the looks, the silence was a godsend. She turned and headed back to towards her temporary quarters. As she stepped through the door, she was greeted by soft earth tones. The stark white of the passageway was a distinct and almost jarring comparison. The walls were a warm beige, the room spacious, more spacious than her old quarters on the Vellacore by a half. The bed was large, the sheets and pillowcase beige like the walls while a thick comforter was a dark brown. She immediately saw the panel by the desk, almost laid out in dark brown. She was reminded of an old adage she had heard, ‘Rank has it’s Privileges.’ Well, she didn’t know what to do with all of this privilege. As she stepped through the door she touched the panel on the wall, closing the old model sliding door with a button. She came to a stark realization, that this was actually crew quarters, not even officer quarters. The sheets and other accessories of the room, they were relics too or at the very least faithful recreations, from a time before humanity had been forced to sacrifice comforts for survival. She put her pack on the desk, then looked around the room. She walked up to the bed, unbuttoning her uniform top. She couldn’t ever remember having a bed this size. She saw a wall hunger, and hung up her top, then she sat down on the bed. A few moments later she was under the thick comforter, fast asleep.
When she woke up her eyes flew open and she threw herself out of the bed. She grabbed her shoes and began shoving them on her feet, when suddenly she remembered that right now she didn’t have any place to be. She let her shoes go back to their place on the floor. For a moment, she just stared at the walls of the room. Then, without another word, she reached over to a panel beside the bed and tapped the light control, then slowly lowered the light level. Seconds later her head hit the pillow, and she stared at the darkness over her. The last thoughts before sleep took her again were of Jess and Kukat, and drifting in zero g, somewhere between the stars.
Ten jumps away, another person who shared her last name, eyes, and hair stood at stock still attention. Vince Brandy didn’t know why the Ghouls had been assigned this honor guard detail, but at least it came with cake. After seeing the barraki, he was shocked it wasn’t carrot cake. Seriously, they looked just like rabbits. Five foot tall, hippity hoppity rabbits, with longer fingers on the paws and little thumbs. The Field Marshal had all of the ship boarders, probably because they had nothing better to do, on display in front of the shuttle. When the barraki leader got off of it he had nearly broke military bearing. Sure the chua looked like smart geckos, but if you put a picture of a gecko and a chua side by side you’d notice immediate differences. The turinika looked like really big flamingos when you got right down to it, and from what he’d seen of the shesvie they looked like a cross between an eagle and a big cat, like something Janet had called a gryphon if you made one look really smart. The barraki though? They were just straight up rabbits! Their nose even did the little thing that made it wrinkle. They stood like rabbits, used their front legs to brace them…. Oh hell did he just see one hopping? Very quickly Barraki Order was becoming Bunny Order in his mind.
As Simmons and their leader exchanged greetings the barraki’s ears perked up and then flattened again, and Brandy pursed his lips. The two began moving through the honor guard, heading towards the bridge. Brandy remained at attention, even as other large, long eared barraki came out of the shuttle and quite literally hopped after their leader. It seemed like it took a year from them all to clear out, even longer for the call for dismissal, and as Brandy relaxed his shoulders he looked to his left to Jessup. “Ok. Tell me you sa…”
“... Dude they’re rabbits.” Jessup said, looking side eyed at him. “Like, just flat out rabbits.”
Brandy furrowed his brow, “Like… The chua…”
“... They look like geckos. I know. But these guys are just straight up rabbits. It’s uncanny.” Jessup shook his head, “I damn near did a double take.”
“They might look like rabbits, but I’ll tell you this, their sensor and communications systems are no joke.” Another voice chimed in, which made both Brandy and Jessup turn. Someone from the Grave Diggers by the patch on their arm, “They can pick up anything, and I mean anything. At least that’s the rumor.”
“Sure you’re not talking about the ears?” Brandy said, and the two men grinned at him.
“Well considering the ears I guess it’s no surprise they found out about the turnika before us.” The Grave Digger said, “Although if they were to be spe…”
“Wait wait wait, but about the turinika?” Brandy interrupted the Grave Digger. “We haven’t heard anything.” The Grave Digger raised his eyebrow and then he smirked.

Rolling onto Marcus’ bare chest, the sight of our clothes scattered everywhere had my cheeks burning a bright scarlet. Swinging my feet over the edge of the bed, the door swinging open had me tugging on one of my oversized t-shirts over my head. Tarot floated into the space, his boots touching the floor. A pocket watch shaped envelope fluttered in his palm, my shaking fingers curling around it. The time council had a task set for me and there was no way out of it. Ripping it open, the image of a time worm had me chewing on my lips. The odd thought of Tarot delivering this to me had alarm bells going off, his pensive expression far from his usual one. Fishing around his pocket, his quaking hand pressed a photo of a demon witch with wild neon waves and matching neon green eyes. Noting her tall but flawless hourglass figure, a matching smile had me putting two and two together. Packing a bag with supplies, the image of her neon green flaming motorcycle flashing in my head. A pale hand reached for me, her inky lips mouthing the word help.
“One can assume that is your daughter.” I pointed out simply, his eyes averting to the floor. “Consider your daughter found, Tarot. If my friend needs me, then my assistance will come swiftly.” Fighting tears in his eyes, my brow cocked in disbelief. An abrupt embrace had my eyes rounding with surprise, my fingers peeling my pendant off my neck. As snarky as I was, the desire to save people is what kept me going. Stepping back while scratching the back of his neck, a flurry of tarot cards whisked him away. Rolling my eyes, his lack of information wasn’t unusual. Creating a line with my pendant as I tugged my socks and boots, the underbelly of time hummed to life. Crossing into the swirling colors, the simple ivory path met the heel of my boots. Shutting the opening behind me, Marcus could exchange harsh words with me later. Besides, the rules strictly banned his presence. Dropping my pendant over my neck, the scent of the worm had to be somewhere. Draping my bag over my shoulder, the time thread weighed a ton. Walking along the path, the plan went through my mind. First thing first, find the worm and kill it. Second, the culprit had to be hunted down and executed. Thirdly, his daughter needed to be brought back home. A quiet voice had me spinning on my heels with a twitching smirk, Saby bouncing up to me with a big smile on her face. Stifling my initial frustration, the hole she fell through had the shimmering worm I was looking for. Ordering her to stay, my dagger expanded from its charm form. Floating over my head, my dagger flipped over my fingers. Aiming for its heart, violet energy built around my palm. Flicking it in the direction of a vital organ, another blast of magic had the dagger sinking into the heart. Shriveling while screaming out in pain, a sea of holes greeted my irritated grimace. Drying into a sparkling powder, problem number one was solved. Catching my fallen dagger, the damage had to be repaired. Putting Saby on my back, a quick warning had her arms hugging my neck. Building energy around my boot, a big ball hummed to life. Pushing off the ground, her real smile never left her face the whole ride back to where she fell. Setting her on her bed, I had work to do. Summoning my slumber powder, a quick blow had violet dust glistening around her face. Collapsing back onto her pillow, cool air lashed at my cheeks the moment I jumped back into my original destination. Whistling sharply, a clear bubble caught my feet. Shifting through my bag, my fingers curled around the glowing needle and thread. Threading it with ease, these attacks were becoming more common. Moving the five foot needle with ease, a secure knot granted me permission to move on to the next one. Cutting off the end with my dagger, the bubble carried me to the next one. Working for several hours, the mistakes had been corrected and the holes were sealed shut with the finest of thread. Lowering me to the pathway, my empty footfalls echoed in the big space of time bubbles. Coming into the city, one person would be able to help me out. Marble homes lined the street, a scarlet Victorian home sang out boisterous swing music. This guy had given me issues before, a low growl rumbling in my throat. Marching up to the door, a swift kick had the door flying across the room. His guests scurried out, my dagger spinning in my palm. A golden haired man with golden hourglass eyes approached me, his arms folded across his shimmering emerald suit. His waves floated around his shoulders, my own fingers running through my snarled waves. Fixing my bangs, his hourglass irises flipped several times. What an asshole!
“You have looked better.” He teased cruelly, a haughty fit of laughter exploding from his lips. “I can feel your mental health decaying. Did you have to see your filthy past? I could erase it for y-” Pressing the sharp edge of my dagger into his neck, my patience was wearing thin. Hissing a few curse words, he had no right to bring up such a thing.
“I may not be able to kill you but I can hurt you real well.” I promised with a sarcastic smirk, punching him in the gut with a ball of built up energy. Doubling over, golden blood painted my boots. The Warden wasn’t my nickname for no reason, the council sending me to clean up their messes all the time. Kicking him in the stomach, the sickening crack of his spine snapping in half had him crumbling to the floor into a heap. Crouching down to his level, his rounded eyes met my tired expression.
“Where is the culprit and where is this woman?” I demanded hotly, pulling out the picture of the green haired woman. Noting his body quivering in fear, something was off about the situation. Shaking his head, his fingers clawed at the worn wooden floor. Mumbling something about the slave trade, the hilt of my dagger creaked in protest at my increasing grip. Dropping a healing potion by his hand, the bastard would be okay by tomorrow. Sprinting onto the pathway, the doorway to the lower realm of time creaked open. Sprinting down the ancient stone stairs, screams and groans had me cursing under my breath. Darting around the cages of trapped monsters, a cloaked figure a few inches shorter than me floated by. Sniffing the air, I began to chew my lip out of a nervous habit. Sensing Glanda’s energy, the pieces all came together. That wicked witch had sent a worm into the realm of time. The poor monsters crying out for help, my heart shattering into pieces. Too tired to fight her, her death was on the chopping block anyway. Sneaking through the shadows, a crumbled up version of the woman in the picture had my heart breaking. Most of her hair had been cut off, no life remaining in her eyes. Hitting the walls of keys, Marcus sure would create a fantastic distraction right about now. The colors drained from my cheeks, Glanda snapping her head in my direction. Sucking in a deep breath, her neon green eyes followed me throwing all the keys into her rusty cage. Getting down inches from her face, her numb gaze frightened me. Sliding my hand through the bar, my hand cupped her cheek. Please don't be so broken that I can't get you out of here.
“I need you to let yourself out and then help the other monsters out. I have a problem to deal with.” I begged with my genuine smile, her shaking hands grabbing mine. Glanda snapped her fingers, several masked demons gathering behind her. Dropping her hands, my dagger spun in my palms. Violet flames flickered to life around me, Glanda commanding them to kill me. My hair floated up, hers doing the same. When was she going to go head to head with me?
“Quit being a bitch and fight me yourself.” I challenged her with a wicked bout of laughter, my eager dagger ready to cut her into pieces. “Oh, I forgot. You aren’t heathen.” Charging at me, flames devoured my dagger. Dodging their attacks, a swift cut had three them screaming in crackling flames. Placing my feet out, two of them met the floor. A flick of my wrists sending the sharp edge of my dagger through their necks. Heads decayed to ash before they could hit my boot, horror rounding my eyes at the monster of a demon picking me up by my hair. Summoning my dagger, the hilt met my slick palm. Cutting my hair, my body smashed onto the marble floor. Too shocked to move, the beast of a demon tossed my hair to the side. A motor revving had me turning my head slowly, his daughter grinning sadistically. Neon flames covered the motorcycle, her shouting move had me rolling out of the way. The monsters ran back into their own dimensions, Glanda joining them. Popping to my feet, she wasn’t going to get away without a bruise. Switching the plant part of my powers, a thick vine shot from my palm, the thinner tip whipping her back towards me. A triumphant grin lingered on my defiant expression, a fit of cruel laughter bursting from my lips. Tossing her about, it was her turn to feel the other side of what she did. Pausing for a moment, our jaws dropped at the bike flying into his head. Tapping her neon green pendant three times, a flaming ball of fire shoved its way down the demon’s throat. A cloud of smoke obscured her landing, her arm scooping me up. Driving up the stairs, the wheels squealed in protest as a jet of flames cut off my connection to Glanda. Hugging her waist, she had to have a couple of inches on me. Smiling back at me, the freedom in her eyes was infectious. Light returned to her neon green eyes, the glow reminding me of fireflies on a cool summer night.
“Get us out of here!” She shouted over the rumbling of her engine, a confident smile illuminating her features. “Glanda will retaliate at any moment.” She wasn’t wrong, an army of demons were heading our way. Plucking my pendant off of my neck, curiosity twinkled in her eyes at me spinning it around clockwise. The pendant spun around faster, a blast of energy knocking us back into the day my mother was murdered. Panicking at the light dying down in my pendant, my powers had been drained. Dragging into the alleyway near my home, a snap of her fingers had the bike going invisible. My three year old self watched out the window in her bright overalls and striped t-shirt with her hands pressed against the window, the color draining from my cheeks for the millionth time today. A clammy sweat drenched my skin, every breath growing shorter. My piggish father dragged my mother out by her dark brown hair, her face facing in the opposite direction of us. My younger self banged on the window, my father slamming her fist into her head until her desperate pleas quieted down. Ruby pooled around her body, my father snapping his furious gaze in her direction. Ripping the door open, his daughter buried me in a hug. Listening to her screams had me trembling in her arms, her chin resting on my head. The wet sound of blood splattering the window had her emotions soaking the top of my head.
“No wonder you are so strong.” She whispered in a deflated tone, her finger lifting into the air. “How about I treat you to a wonderful meal several states away from her. Snapping her fingers, both of us had bell bottoms and white flowing shirts on. Lifting up my chin with her finger, a pair of scissors glistened in her hands. Spinning me around, the scissors moved a mile a minute. Pieces of my hair floated to my feet, her other hand holding my head straight. Seconds from snapping at her, she moved onto her own. Pouting in a rebellious manner, her snarky words had me liking her instantly.
“Don’t kill me but you cut your hair like a blind person. So I gave you an inverted bob with layers.” She teased sarcastically, a stifled laugh tumbling from my lips as she shaved the left side of the head. “Nice to see you laugh. So I heard you have a coven. May I join? Witchcraft has always interested me. I know the basics but I am a bit stuck.” Hesitation had me stepping back as I played with the hem of my shirt, her puppy dog eyes winning me over. Cutting my palm with my dagger, she slid the sharp edge of her scissors along her palm. Cupsing our hands together, an inky pocket watch tattoo poked out of the collar of her shirt. Fishing around my bag, tears welled up in my eyes at my mother’s silky handkerchief grazing the tips of my fingers. Standing on my toes, her kind smile never left her face at me tying the blue and orange handkerchief around her head.
“Take good care of it. That is the last thing I have of my mother.” I spoke with a mixture of sincerity and sternness, her head nodding once. “Keep being funny. Your sense of humor is refreshing. Now take me away.” Climbing onto her bike with her, my arms snaked around her waist. Revving the engine, adventure glowed in my eyes at the bike standing on one wheel. Several states passed by us, the hands on the neares clock moving a mere five minutes. Parking in front of a worn restaurant in Maine, the ocean waves crashed nearby. Turning a couple of knobs, the flames died down to reveal a normal black motorcycle. A vacancy sign blinked at a colorful motel across the way. Fishing round my bag, a wad of seventies dollar bills felt heavy in my palms. The witch who helped me grabbed my wrist the moment I hopped off, fright haunting her eyes. Cupping her hand, she had nothing to worry about.
“Get us a seat while I get a room. I can’t travel for a few hours at the least.” I comforted her, her mind fighting between being tough or vulnerable, a silver necklace catching my eyes. Reading the name Lightz, it didn’t take much for me to put it all together. Lightz was her name and a beautiful one at that. Spinning her towards me, my hands cupped her face. Abrupt tears told me that I shouldn’t leave her alone.
“Bring your bike over while I get us a room.” I caved, a lovely smile met mine. The right corner of her lips hanging over the left slightly, dirt crunching underneath her wheels as we crossed the road. Waiting outside, the bell announced my presence. A young blonde haired woman looked up from her magazine, her hand sliding over a ledger while smacking gum in her mouth. Fishing out the amount of money plus a bit extra to ensure our rest, a key hitting the tip of my finger. Wonderful personality, I thought sarcastically to myself. Taking a second look at her, her ice blue eyes met mine in a chilling stare.
“Watch your mouth in my motel or a punishment will be served.” She spoke coldly, running her hands through her perfect waves. Leaning onto the desk, a souvenir box caught my eyes behind her. Pretending that it didn’t affect me, a case had fallen right on my lap. Guiding her to the room, the key slid in with ease as she parked her bike outside. Locking it behind us, my pensive expression had her asking if I was okay. What made that woman tick? Thinking back to her nametag, Loretta flashed in my head. Lorretta had to be caught, an idea coming to mind. Maybe the locals knew about any disappearances, my brow cocking at a bottle of water hitting my face.
“Maybe you could be Sherlock Holmes after we eat. I am starving.” She joked with a biting tone, her hand resting on her hip. A long sigh drew from my lips. Huffing out a quick fine, that would give me the opportunity I desired. Locking the door behind us, her cold gaze met my defiant grin on my determined features. Bars would soon keep her in her new home, the orange sure to look lovely on her. Crossing the street, another bell announced our presence. Taking a seat at the worn wooden bar, the walls were lined with pictures of missing persons. Asking for a napkin, the similar brown hair and brown eyes spoke of a type. Borrowing a pen from the friendly but rather hairy bartender, eyes tracked me walking up to the missing people. Scribbling away, certain jewelry underneath their names would help me identify who was who. Plopping down at the bar, Lightz had ordered for me. The bell rang once more, Loretta finding her way in. A lovely summer ivory summer dress floated over her hourglass figure, the stool groaning as she took a seat next to me. Refusing to look her in the eyes, her next word sent a shiver up my spine.
“Mice like you get devoured by the cat.” She chuckled heartily as if it was a normal thing to say. “The mouse doesn’t find her way out on her own. Such lovely hair and eyes.” Playing with my hair, Lightz slapped her hand away. Rising from her stool, she towered over Loretta. Leaning down by her ear, my ears didn’t pick what she said. Loretta rose with a huff, the door slamming behind her. What the hell did she say? Crashing down next to me, a couple of hot burgers got placed in front of us. We didn’t order anything, something feeling fishy. Bringing it to my nose, a rancid smell had me whacking it out of her hands. Slamming my money on the counter, a sedative had been blended with the meat. The cook had to be an associate of hers, my hand snatching her wrists. Dragging her out, two black bags were dropped over our heads. Tossing us into the back of a van. Leaning onto the side of the van, a darkness swallowed us. Turning my head towards her, we would need her magic.
“Pretend to be knocked out when they open the door. She should bring us to the bodies.” I whispered loud enough for her to hear and her alone. “Punch your way out and find a neighbor. Call the cops and bring them to me. Am I understood?” Shaking her head, she didn’t want to leave my side. Whatever would come my way could be dealt with by one of my many healing potions. Driving through the hours, my powers began to return slowly. The brakes squealed in protest, another scream giving hope of me not being found out. Pale moonlight flickered through the holes of the bag over my head, chaos erupting next to me as Lightz smashed her way out. Ordering them to let her go, her gloved hands ripped me out of the van. A trail of neon energy had me sighing in relief, grunts pouring from her lips as she hooked me up to a meat hook via chains. The years of execution trained me for this moment, no pain starting yet. Ripping the bag off of my head, a tarot card floated by her head. Floating upside down behind her head, a temporary time pass hung around his neck. Knocking her out with a kick, a dull thud announced her landing. Lowering me down, his steady hands went to work chaining her up in my former position. Helping the other woman down, cuts covered her face. Tearing at the hem of my shirt, my steady hands tied the material around the deep cut on her arm. Wet eyes met my gentle smile, her lips parting to speak several times.
“Who are you? I want to send you a thank you note.” She inquired in a hoarse voice, red and blue lights bathing the area. Too concerned with messing with time, forget me powder appeared in my palm. Blowing the iridescent powder into her face, her body collapsed into a heap. Snatching Tarot, his protests fell on deaf ears as I dragged him out the back door. Freezing at the sight of Lightz on her motorcycle, silent tears stained his cheeks. Yanking us onto her bike, I was more than happy to be on the very back. Riding away from the scene, enough power had been restored for us to go home. Pulling off my pendant, my pleas for them to hold on had me. Spinning my pendant counter clockwise, the energy built in the air.
“I call upon the sands of time to whisk me back home and to set this timeline in place. “ I chanted tiredly, the pendant spun faster. A blast of energy shot us into the grand hall of his castle. Flying off the back of the bike, a fuming Marcus caught me. Seconds from berating me, the motorcycle engine died down to reveal Tarot and Lightz hugging each other with uncontrollable sobs. Saby skidded downstairs, only to stop in awe at the witch taking off my mother’s handkerchief. A bond formed between them, inky tattoos of phoenix's appeared around their necks, her father noticing as well. Approaching each other cautiously, Saby’s ears pinned back with her rich blush. Lightz bowed in front of her, her genuine smile enchanting Saby. That smile could enchant anyone if I was being honest.
“I am your mate, Lightz. Let me make you a meal to steal your heart.” She flirted shamelessly, placing her on her back while passing me my scarf. Marcus let it go the moment Tarot bowed in my direction. Pressing his palms together, his fraying nerves had been eased. Thank goodness. Today may have been hard but it sure was worth it.
“Many thanks for your bravery. If it weren’t for you, my daughter would still be trapped.” He choked out oddly, his nature not leading to him having such an air. Waving around my hand to calm his down further, exhaustion weighed heavily on my eyelids. Bobbing my head up and down, sweet slumber stole me away.
