2024.05.13 06:15 Exciting_Lime_6509 Indian Grave Caverns or Indian Caverns near Nantahala

I would like to preface this with, I don't consider this violating guidelines because the place I'm talking about is relatively well known and has multiple videos of people visiting it, but I had some questions about the cave for people who had been there.
A while ago I found a website talking about caves on the Nantahala River, and I was very exited as I'm near the region and don't have many caves here. The only thing I was curious about, is that I couldn't tell if the cave was an actual cave, or just a rock shelter that happened to be called a cave. The photos don't really help and none of the videos of people going there help because they clearly don't plan on entering the cave even if there is one there. Here's the link to the website I found it on: https://www.be-roberts.com/se/nc/nant/cave/caves1.htm You can also find videos by just Googling "Indian Grave Caverns" or "Indian Cave Nantahala."
I appreciate any info you have on this. Also sorry if this violates community guidelines I really wasn't sure if it did since it was pretty well known.

2024.05.07 18:16 froyo4life Mountain town suggestions for about 6 days of day hikes (not backpacking)

Update: Thanks all, we decided on Banner Elk/Linville Gorge area for a few days, then Brevard for a few days.
Hi all, I’m planning a trip to the NC mountains and would love recommendations for 1-2 locations to base ourselves out of for day hikes. We would be doing early morning / late afternoon summer hikes at about 6 hours max for each one. I’m thinking about Banner Elk for one location so we can do Roan Mountan/Linville Gorge hikes, but what’s a good second location? Considering Cherokee for GSMNP or Asheville area for Pisgah.
We’d love a combo of cute small town vibes with a few food options and scenic medium-challenging hikes.

Phish

Phish, Sunday 04/24/1994 (30 years ago) Grady Cole Center, Charlotte, NC, USA
Gap Chart, Tour: 1994 Spring Tour
Set 1 : My Friend, My Friend , Ya Mar , Axilla (Part II) > Maze , Bathtub Gin -> Jump Monk -> Bathtub Gin > Dog Faced Boy , Paul and Silas > It's Ice > Slave to the Traffic Light
Set 2 : Demand > David Bowie , The Mango Song > Julius , Colonel Forbin's Ascent > Fly Famous Mockingbird , Chalk Dust Torture , Contact , Good Times Bad Times
Encore : Sweet Adeline
Jamchart Notes:
Bathtub Gin - "Gin" -> "Jump Monk" -> "Gin." Quality jamming early on with variations on the "Gin" theme. The "Jump Monk" (Charles Mingus) segue comes near the end (one of only 2 Phish performances of this jazz classic).
Jump Monk - -> from "Bathtub Gin." One of only two performances of this Charles Mingus jazz classic. -> back to "Gin."
Bathtub Gin - -> in from "Jump Monk." Quick return to end "Gin" before > to "Dog Faced Boy."
Slave to the Traffic Light - Here, there's a noticeable, bouncy groove to the jam section, like you want to tap your foot along, which seems unusual for "Slave." And Trey really brings it on heading into the finish.
David Bowie - First of the "Big" '94 "Bowies." This is an unbelievable journey of music and improvisation, spine tingling at times, and thrilling by the conclusion. And the best was yet to come.
Show Notes:
Jump Monk was played for the first time since March 12, 1988 (732 shows). Tequila was teased before Demand and also during Bowie. Bowie also included Dave's Energy Guide teases. The Mockingbird narration contained Also Sprach Zarathustra teases from Page. Contact included a Blue Bayou tease from Page.

Set 2 : David Bowie 2 , Cavern > Ya Mar , Foam , Mike's Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove 3 -> The Mango Song > Horn > Cold as Ice > Love You 4 > Cold as Ice , Glide , Llama
Encore : Contact > Big Black Furry Creature from Mars
1 Narration included references to The Wizard of Oz. 2 All Fall Down, Simpsons, Turn Turn Turn, and Random Note signals. 3 Vocal jam; unfinished. 4 Fish on trombone.
Jamchart Notes:
Stash - The first seriously exploratory version with rhythmic gyrations, unusual melody from Trey, and experimental playing.
Mike's Song - While the first section is another solid April '92 showing, the real meat here is the 2nd jam, which has unusually exploratory and improvisational play for this period, even jazzy sounding Mike and some carnival-like melodies from Page and Trey.
Weekapaug Groove - An unusual vocal jam occurs alongside "On Broadway" teasing, followed by a rocking and intense jam, which is unfinished, and -> to "The Mango Song."
Llama - What do you call it when the sick get sicker?
Show Notes:
The Mockingbird narration started with references to The Wizard of Oz and also contained a tease of Miss Gulch / Witch's theme. Bowie had All Fall Down, Simpsons, Turn Turn Turn, and Random Note signals. Weekapaug contained a vocal jam, an On Broadway tease, and was unfinished. Love You featured a trombone solo, as Fish initially could not get the vacuum to work. BBFCFM featured Trey and Mike diving across the stage to flashing strobe lights. Jim was the opening act.

1 First known performance.
Jamchart Notes:
You Enjoy Myself - Cool segue into "Dave's Energy Guide" out of the vocal jam ("VJ").
Show Notes:
Phish played this show at the conclusion of "Earth Week." This gig featured the only known performance of Punch Me in the Eye and the first known performance of Who Do? We Do!

2024.04.24 02:28 TheMarinaraMeatball Considering hiking Linville with my pregnant wife. Need advice if this is doable?

Hello! My wife and I are moving out of NC in Aug and I always wanted to go see Linville Gorge. As such, we are planning a day trip up there in two weeks. The trip will be six weeks before she is expected to give birth to our first child. Is doing the Hawksbill Mountain Trail reasonable? All Trails says it is only 2 miles round trip with only 600 feet of elevation change, but I am concerned about any scrambling or steep parts given she is pregnant.
As an FYI, my wife has been very active during her pregnancy so the hike itself is not a concern, assuming its straightforward. I just have never been and do not know what to expect.
Feel free to also recommend any milder hikes with good views of the Gorge. We are really excited to see it in person!

Tour: Not Part of a Tour
Show Notes:
Phish, Friday 04/21/2023 (1 year ago) Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood, CA, USA
Gap Chart, Tour: 2023 Spring Tour
Set 1 : The Moma Dance > Sigma Oasis , Party Time , Strawberry Letter 23 , Everything's Right , Shade , Funky Bitch , A Wave of Hope
Set 2 : Sample in a Jar > Down with Disease 1 > Mercury -> Blaze On 2 > You Enjoy Myself , Cavern
Encore : Drift While You're Sleeping
1 Unfinished. 2 Lyrics changed to reference "Bowl."
Jamchart Notes:
Down with Disease - In lieu of lead-pointed playing, Trey sets the initial tone by tossing out spacious chords and arpeggiations. Page synths and hazy Trey delay paint the scene before a slightly dissonant transition space develops. The band then dials up the grime to deliver a sludge-y, stomping minor key rock-out. Ample time is spent in the murk before fading out > "Mercury."
Show Notes:
Down with Disease was unfinished. Blaze On's lyrics were changed to reference "Bowl."

Phish, Thursday 04/21/2022 (2 years ago) MSG, New York, NY, USA
Gap Chart, Tour: 2022 Madison Square Garden Spring Run
Set 1 : Suzy Greenberg 1 > 46 Days , Plasma , The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday > Avenu Malkenu > The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday , Wolfman's Brother , Esther , Ghost
Set 2 : Chalk Dust Torture 2 -> Tweezer > Also Sprach Zarathustra > Maze , About to Run , The Mango Song > Harry Hood > Character Zero -> Tweezer -> Character Zero
Encore : A Life Beyond The Dream , Tweezer Reprise
1 Dedicated to the "hero of the song," Suzy Greenberg, who was attending her first Phish show. 2 Unfinished.
Jamchart Notes:
Wolfman's Brother - Straightforward in structure, this version builds momentum by way of clever full band interplay. Trey makes his intentions known right away by shifting through multiple effects, toggling between lead playing and funk-oriented rhythm comping. The rest of the band follows suit, as the jam develops into a laid back, conversational groove session. This then patiently builds to the classic, spirited "Wolfman's" ending.
Ghost - The jam begins with an upbeat tempo anchored by cool playing from Trey. Later, the tempo slows as Mike takes the lead with deft work on the bass. Just when you think the chunky notes of the song from Trey are leading to the end of the jam, the rest of the band isn't quite ready to let things go, which leads to a maelstrom of a peak, before finally returning to end the song.
Chalk Dust Torture - Heads into low-key psychedelia-tinged jamming out of the song proper thanks to Trey's thick and goopy effects, then Page suggests major key and a pleasant groove emerges with Mike steadily holding down the fort. The jam gets more delicate and dreamy, even as Fish keeps his usual rock-solid tempo, then builds to a marvelous rock-out climax and a big-time peak thanks once again to Mike's efforts. -> into a great "Tweezer".
Tweezer - Although "average-lengthed" among all versions e'er performed, this gem-of-a-version shines, with the first few minutes of the jam featuring steady, intermittent, "Your Pet Cat"-esque chording and comping by Trey, and a melodically charming/glittering section during which Trey sustains a note for many measures (a modest peak) over excellent accompaniment (that's never dark), before the version concludes atypically with a single chord from Trey that is sustained into the first note > of "2001."
Character Zero - Trey loves MSG, a fact made clear here, when, in lieu of capping the set with a typical "Hood," he elects to floor the Garden, moving from zero to sixty in split seconds, bouncing around the room with typically rocking play (featuring a "Heartbreaker" tease) which, surprisingly, breaks for "Tweezer."
Tweezer - Your Pet "Tweezer" returns, buzzing, if not quite purring, for a few more minutes.
Character Zero - -> from "Tweezer" to cap a fun, inspired close to a set rearranged and redefined.
Show Notes:
This was the rescheduled date for the show that had been postponed due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19 surge in New York City in December of 2021. Suzy Greenberg was dedicated to "the hero of the song," Suzy Greenberg, who was attending her first Phish show. Trey teased Jean Pierre in 46 Days. Chalk Dust Torture was unfinished. 2001 contained Super Bad and Martian Monster teases. Mike quoted Kung and teased Plasma in Harry Hood. Trey teased Heartbreaker in the first Character Zero and Tweezer in the second Character Zero.

Phish, Thursday 04/21/1994 (30 years ago) Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Winston-Salem, NC, USA
Gap Chart, Tour: 1994 Spring Tour
Set 1 : Chalk Dust Torture , Sparkle > Foam , Glide , Split Open and Melt , The Lizards , Down with Disease > If I Could > Cavern
Set 2 : Also Sprach Zarathustra > Maze , Fluffhead > Mike's Song > I Am Hydrogen 1 > Weekapaug Groove , Scent of a Mule , Big Ball Jam > Possum 2 , Amazing Grace 3
Encore : Drums 4 -> Jam 5 -> All Along the Watchtower 6
1 "I walk awakening on the misty fields of forever" lyrics. 2 All Fall Down signal. 3 Without microphones. 4 Carter Beauford on drums. 5 Dave Matthews Band. 6 Phish debut; Dave Matthews Band.
Jamchart Notes:
Possum - Intense jam rocks the house, hard. Great Fish and Page.
Jam - With the Dave Matthews Band. -> in from "Drums" featuring Fish and Carter Beauford. A rocking and very percussive jam with both bands playing along together builds into a good groove which slows and -> to "All Along The Watchtower."
Show Notes:
Foam contained a brief Dixie tease from Trey and Possum contained an All Fall Down signal. The guest trampoline jumper during Mike's Song was then-nine year old fan Katherine Lang. Hydrogen contained the lyrics "I walk awakening on the misty fields of forever." Amazing Grace was performed without microphones. The Drums Jam featured Carter Beauford of the Dave Matthews Band; the rest of the encore (including the Phish debut of All Along the Watchtower) featured the entire band. All Along the Watchtower included a Theme from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly tease from LeRoi Moore. The opening act was Dave Matthews Band.

Phish, Wednesday 04/21/1993 (31 years ago) Newport Music Hall, Columbus, OH, USA
Gap Chart, Tour: 1993 WinteSpring Tour
Set 1 : Buried Alive > Poor Heart , Foam , Guelah Papyrus , Maze , Colonel Forbin's Ascent > Fly Famous Mockingbird > Rift , Punch You in the Eye , I Didn't Know 1 , Run Like an Antelope 2
Set 2 : Possum , Mound , Split Open and Melt , The Squirming Coil , The Horse 3 > Silent in the Morning , Big Ball Jam > Mike's Song > The Great Gig in the Sky , Weekapaug Groove 4 , Gumbo
Encore : Sweet Adeline , Cavern
1 Fish on trombone. 2 Simpsons, Key Change, Tritone Down, and Random Note signals. 3 Trey on acoustic guitar. 4 Unfinished.
Jamchart Notes:
Run Like an Antelope - Unusual, intense and improvisational jam that almost sounds like a "SOAM" jam at times.
Split Open and Melt - The jam from this fiery, intense version was attached to the end of the song "Demand" on the studio album Hoist. In a 1994 interview, Trey noted this performance marked the beginning of a watershed, 14-month period, during which the band really clicked and coalesced on "SOAM's" complex jam rhythm. Not surprisingly, the golden age of "SOAM" overlaps with this 1993 - 1994 period of technical mastery considerably.
Weekapaug Groove - Nice interplay between Trey and Page in the breakdown section, then the jam seems to be headed for home with a fiery peak, but instead veers off-course into more improvisational jamming, gradually diminishing unfinished, and (arguably) > to "Gumbo."
Show Notes:
The jam segment of this Melt is the one that appears at the end of Demand on Hoist. The Mockingbird Narration contained a quote of the Winkie Chant ("O-Ee- Yah! Eoh-Ah!") from The Wizard of Oz . I Didn't Know featured Fish on trombone and The Horse featured Trey on acoustic guitar. Antelope contained a Divided Sky tease from Trey, an I'm a Man (Spencer Davis Group) tease from Page, and Simpsons, Key Change, Tritone Down, and Random Note signals. Trey teased Fire (Ohio Players) in Possum. Mike's contained a brief Oye Como Va tease. Weekapaug was unfinished. Gumbo contained a Free Bird-style ending.

Set 2 : Dinner and a Movie , Colonel Forbin's Ascent > Fly Famous Mockingbird > Tweezer > Tela > Mike's Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove , Weigh > Cold as Ice > Catapult 2 > Cold as Ice , Hold Your Head Up > Lively Up Yourself 3 > Cold as Ice , Sanity 4 , Maze , Sweet Adeline 5
Encore : Cavern
1 Simpsons, Will the Circle Be Unbroken?, Get Back, Oom Pa Pa, All Fall Down, Aw Fuck!, and Me and My Arrow signals. 2 Only Mike; a cappella. 3 Phish debut. Trey on drums, Fish on bass, and Mike on guitar and his only known performance on vacuum. 4 Yastrzemski and Carl mentions from Mike and Trey. 5 Without microphones.
Jamchart Notes:
Split Open and Melt - Very improvisational and exploratory jam with excellent dynamics modulation. Awesome Mike and Trey.
Possum - Extended intro with many signals and "DEG" teases. Great jam that has a nice swingy feel to it before going full throttle.
It's Ice - Good jam and nice work by Page on the Hammond B-3. Segue to "Eliza."
Tweezer - Very melodic, enchanting jam in part. Still among the coolest versions in history.
Mike's Song - Played at slightly slower tempo, the jam includes great Mike, "HYHU"-like jamming, then a tense, spiraling jam. The 2nd jam has some unusual descending riffs, dissonance, and more spiraling tension.
Weekapaug Groove - Simmers at a rather low intensity early on with Trey's playing noticeably restrained. The jam works its way into an improvisational segment with building tension, after which the expected musical fireworks go off. Includes teases of "Happy Birthday to You" and "Linus and Lucy" as well as a birthday announcement from Trey.
Show Notes:
Trey teased Johnny B. Goode in Melt. Possum contained Simpsons, Will the Circle Be Unbroken?, Get Back, Oom Pa Pa, All Fall Down, Aw Fuck!, and Me and My Arrow signals, as well as strong Dave's Energy Guide teases. Dinner and a Movie was preceded by a Colour My World (Chicago) tease and quote. Trey used an interesting voice effect during the Mockingbird narration as he spoke of the evil King Wilson. Mike's included a Hold Your Head Up jam. Hydrogen and Weigh were announced as written by baseball Hall-of-Famer Carl Yastrzemski. Trey called Mike "Carl" prior to his Weigh bass solo. Weekapaug contained a Happy Birthday tease and dedication from Trey, as well as a Linus and Lucy tease from Mike. This only known Phish performance of Lively Up Yourself featured Trey on drums, Fish on bass, and Mike on guitar and his only known performance on vacuum. The Cold as Ice outro was followed by a brief vocal jam about the band's comments on their performance of Lively Up Yourself. Sanity contained Yastrzemski and Carl mentions from Mike and Trey respectively. Cavern was introduced by Mike as The Prison Joke.

Tour: Not Part of a Tour
Show Notes:
Phish, Wednesday 04/20/2022 (2 years ago) MSG, New York, NY, USA
Gap Chart, Tour: 2022 Madison Square Garden Spring Run
Set 1 : Carini > Possum , The Moma Dance 1 > Leaves , Strange Design , Stash , Blaze On
Set 2 : Sigma Oasis > Down with Disease > The Howling -> Twist > Mountains in the Mist , Reba , Drift While You're Sleeping
Encore : Gumbo , Slave to the Traffic Light
1 Unfinished.
Jamchart Notes:
Carini - Opening a show for the third time in eight months, Trey/the band clearly feel comfortable with this rocking show setting the tone for the first set. There's an interesting contrast from the hard-rocking intensity of the song proper and the bliss that follows. After not playing for two months, the band is ready to jam. Trey leads with nimble playing throughout and the rest of the band follows suit in yet another solid Carini opener.
The Moma Dance - A strange design, this unfinished version features smooth, relaxed play from Trey (pre-vocals) and typically great Fish. While never quite abandoning the song, proper, Trey's impassioned play, notable for a wonderful array of effects, runs for some time before > for "Leaves."
Stash - Trey enters the fray with tight staccato picking which Mike counterpoints with a fat and funky tone. From there, the jam skirts around the edges of "Stash" proper with a playful swagger, all the while the music focused and suspenseful, until boiling over around 11:00 with Trey tearing it up and Fish really digging into his kit. A dank "Stash" indeed.
Down with Disease - A botched composed section leads to what the band does best these days: extended improvisation and longform jamming. Departing the song proper, Trey, atop Fish's incendiary offbeat playing, eases into a melodic line (offset by fiery riffing) and accented by awesome Page on his concert G. A cool, almost stately jam emerges, with Trey shaping his tone to make of familiar territory something new. Mike and Fish add a lot of color before the jam regains intensity and finds its rugged way to the song's anthemic closing refrain.
Show Notes:
This was the rescheduled date for the show that had been postponed due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19 surge in New York City in December of 2021. Moma Dance was unfinished. Page teased Long Tall Glasses in Gumbo.

Phish, Wednesday 04/20/1994 (30 years ago) Virginia Horse Center, Lexington, VA, USA
Gap Chart, Tour: 1994 Spring Tour
Set 1 : Runaway Jim , It's Ice > Julius , Bouncing Around the Room , Rift , Axilla (Part II) > Stash , Suzy Greenberg
Set 2 : Poor Heart > Run Like an Antelope , Magilla , Paul and Silas > Sample in a Jar , Big Ball Jam > Harry Hood , Fee 1 , You Enjoy Myself 2 -> Over the Rainbow 3
Encore : Highway to Hell
1 Trey sang some verses through megaphone. 2 Dave Matthews, LeRoi Moore, Boyd Tinsley, Carter Beauford, and Stefan Lessard. Fish on vacuum. 3 Dave Matthews, LeRoi Moore, Boyd Tinsley, Carter Beauford, and Stefan Lessard.
Jamchart Notes:
Runaway Jim - Another strong, groove-oriented jam, which, primarily because of tape quality, provides a great look at Page’s strong play. Trey, however, locks into a great riff, which Mike then echoes, as Fish, as usual, drives the version's frenetic pace.
Stash - The great thing about "Stash" from '93 - '94 is how fluidly the band weaves back on forth between familiar ground and exploratory territory. This intense and gripping version shifts back and forth several times.
Run Like an Antelope - A bit odd and quircky at times, but also very experimental and improvisational, and the jam closes with a raging peak.
Show Notes:
Suzy contained Sunshine of Your Love teases by Page and Trey. Trey also teased Rhythm-A-Ning and The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Banana) in Magilla and sang some of the verses of Fee through a megaphone. Over the Rainbow was played for the first time since August 17, 1992 (160 shows). YEM and Rainbow featured Dave Matthews, LeRoi Moore, Boyd Tinsley, Carter Beauford, and Stefan Lessard from Dave Matthews Band. YEM also featured Fish on vacuum. Matthews was Trey's substitute trampoline jumper during YEM. The opening act was Dave Matthews Band.

Set 1 : Runaway Jim > Weigh > Sparkle , Stash , Bouncing Around the Room , It's Ice > Glide , Uncle Pen , Lawn Boy , David Bowie 1
Set 2 : Chalk Dust Torture , Fluffhead > Sample in a Jar , Big Ball Jam , The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday > Avenu Malkenu > The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday , My Friend, My Friend 2 , Llama , You Enjoy Myself , Hold Your Head Up > Whipping Post 3 > Hold Your Head Up , Golgi Apparatus
Encore : Funky Bitch , Amazing Grace 4
1 Simpsons and All Fall Down signals in intro. 2 Beginning featured Trey on acoustic guitar. 3 Fish on vocals. 4 Without microphones.
Jamchart Notes:
Fluffhead - After successfully navigating the treacherous early sections, there's a palpable sense of energy as the lyrical section of Clod ends, leading to a super Page solo complimented by great play from Trey. An excellent Bundle of Joy gives that momentary sense of an impending train wreck, before the band explodes into a powerful, notably strong Arrival, featuring pounding Fish and great licks from Trey.
Show Notes:
The Bowie intro contained Lawn Boy teases from Trey as well as Simpsons and All Fall Down signals. Trey teased Dazed and Confused in Big Ball Jam. The beginning of My Friend featured Trey on acoustic guitar. YEM contained Speed Racer and Mission: Impossible theme teases from Page. Immigrant Song was teased in the YEM vocal jam. Whipping Post featured Fish on vocals. Amazing Grace was performed without microphones.

Encore : Horn > Alumni Blues > Letter to Jimmy Page > Alumni Blues
1 Debut.
Jamchart Notes:
Reba - Terrific, soaring Trey, complimented by full-band play with the musicians working in concert through a calculated passage of metered time and measured space.
Show Notes:
Trey teased Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas in Reba. Fish led the band in the debut of Setting Sail, which arose out of the vocal jam of YEM. Tweezer contained In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida teases from Page.

Gap Chart, Tour: 1989 Tour
Set 1 : AC/DC Bag > Fluffhead 1 , You Shook Me All Night Long Jam > Fluffhead , Fire , Esther , Suzy Greenberg , The Sloth , Possum , McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters -> Foam , David Bowie
Set 2 : Divided Sky , Walk Away , You Enjoy Myself > Split Open and Melt 2 , The Lizards , Mike's Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove , Love You 3 , Harpua
1 Fire alarm interruption. 2 Fish drum solo. 3 Fish on trombone.
Show Notes:
Humphries House had been a Zeta Upsilon ("Zu") frat house and monthly parties used to occur there that were referred to as "Full Moon at the Zoo" parties. A fire alarm sounded as Fluffhead moved into the Clod segment of Fluff's Travels, which caused the building to be evacuated. When the band retook the stage, they started up a humorous pass at You Shook Me All Night Long and then dove back into Fluff's Travels. Fire was dedicated to the "brave men" who turned off the fire alarm. Suzy contained Sailor's Hornpipe teases from Trey. Trey and Page teased Blue Monk in Possum. Bowie included a brief Frosty the Snowman jam in the intro, as well as a Riders on the Storm tease from Page and a Santa Claus is Coming to Town tease. Melt contained a Fish drum solo. Love You was played for the first time since October 31, 1987 (138 shows) and featured Fish on trombone. Harpua contained "Charge!" and Price of Love teases from Page, multiple Gimme Some Lovin' teases, and a Walk This Way tease from Mike.

2024.04.18 18:31 Rollenopfer Field report from our roadtrip from New Orleans to New York City

When I asked for tips for our road trip (wife, three kids, me) from NOLA to NYC, I got a lot of suggestions that helped me. I therefore wanted to share my experiences in order to be able to help some people on future trips.
In advance: it was great and I would plan the road trip almost exactly the same way again.
We arrived at JFK on March 21st. To our slight dismay, it was still very cold there. We therefore moved around a lot in the short time we had until we left for NOLA (2 nights). We explored Queens and Brooklyn on foot. Queens in particular is ignored by many tourists. We found that Trinciti in Queens probably has the best Trinidadian food outside of T&T.
Then we went to NOLA by plane where we started the road trip. Our vehicle was a Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, the ideal car for a quick start at traffic lights. Our other overnight stops (each one between 1 and 4 nights) were Gulf Shores (Alabama), Birmingham (Alabama), Huntsville (Alabama), Nashville Tennesse, Seymour (Tennessee), Asheville North Carolina), Banner Elk (North Carolina), Waynesboro (Virgina), Washington (DC ) and Manhattan (New York)
What were the highlights?
New Orleans:
The architecture is unique. We lived near Audubon Park. One house is more beautiful than the other. The villas are very individually designed, but somehow fit together well. The final touch is provided by the rustic vegetation. The French Quarter also has its own charm. Of course we tried Poboy, Muffaletta and Beignet and the latter in particular are damn delicious. The evening was great in the Musical Legends Park. The band played great jazz and we were the most enthusiastic guests. My wife also had a lot of wishes, all of which the band was able to implement. Of course we also put a few bills in the bucket.
Nashville:
What a crazy party mile. My wife and I found it almost a bit too much on the first evening. However, our alcohol level was also at zero and that of the others, well I don't think it needs to be mentioned. On the second day we explored the city (Capitol, Hall of Fame, farmers market, sports museum, etc.) and then went back to Broadway. There's a lot going on here even at lunchtime. It's crazy how many thousands of musicians earn their living here. Sometimes three bands play in one bar. There is even live music in shoe stores. We then went to Jason Aldean Restaurant and listened to Cole Phillips and Jackie Verna covering songs. Great time there.
Banner Elk - Boone region:
Such a nice stop in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The city has nice restaurants, even a small, free art museum, a theater, brewery, etc. But it's not as uber-hip as Asheville, for example. You can also go on great hiking trips in the area. Since the area is quite high, we even had snow here again at the beginning of April.
The Blue Ridge Mountains:
It was just great to drive through here. The views on both the BRP and Skyline Drive are simply fantastic. The trees barely had any leaves and a large part of the BRP in NC was still closed due to snowfall. Still, what an honor to have driven this way.
Nature in general:
Burgess Falls, Linville Falls, the Mississippi/Alabama/Florida coast. The drive through rural and forested Alabama, the Natchez Trace Parkway. The lack of density in the USA simply brings with it a beautiful solitude that one is not used to in Europe.
Washington DC:
The city is simply very pleasant for tourists to visit. The Washington Mall is easy to walk around and of course it's great to actually have all the monuments you see in movies in front of you. The museums are really great and they are all free. We went to the Renwick Gallery and the Museum of African American History and both are highly recommended. Of course, my kids especially loved the Jefferson Library for Instagram selfies. The solar eclipse was the icing on the cake of our stay in DC.
New York:
Of course always a highlight. Since we had a total of 6 days in NYC, we made it to all boroughs of the city. We visited the Bronx for a Yankees game. The children especially thought it was great. They were the loudest "Go Yankees, go!" callers in the stadium. I drank the most expensive beer of my life for 18 dollars, but well, even that's an experience, right :-).
Things we liked during our trip:
Things we didn’t like:
Things that surprised us:
OK stop. I have already written too much. Hope this can help others who are planning a similar trip, especially those that are also coming from abroad.
You guys really have a great country. Treat it well and treat each other well (especially looking at the madness that comes with the Biden/Trump battle). I hope to come back soon and explore another part of the states.

2024.04.16 18:16 steff__e Charlotte Electronic Music Scene Guide (Updated April 2024)

The purpose of this guide is to provide an index of Charlotte's electronic dance music scene, including venues, promotions, parties, and other online resources for connecting to the scene. This guide can be thought of as a primer that provides a general overview of the scene, and a rolodex that may be updated with new resources over time. This guide aims to inform newcomers to the area and visitors who may be unfamiliar with the scene, as well as locals who may be interested in learning more about the scene. Currently, this guide will list venues, events, and promotions within the city of Charlotte, North Carolina.*
To start, here are some links that may be helpful:
Charlotte EDM! Facebook Group - An active group with several thousand members. The content of the group covers Charlotte, and other parts of the Carolinas. A Facebook account is required, as it is a private group.
edmtrain - An event listing site focused on electronic dance music. Users can select many different options for cities and states to view. Setting your location to Charlotte, NC will display events in Charlotte. There are dedicated users who continuously add events, but they can't always add all of them. That is where staying on top of other social media channels helps.
Resident Advisor - A nifty site that has not quite caught on around these parts, but it can be helpful when exploring areas where it is more active.
Carolina EDM - this site is updated with event listings from all around the Carolinas, which may be useful when looking for events outside of Charlotte.
The following section lists music venues that hold electronic dance music events. Some venues may hold electronic dance music events more frequently than others, but in general, these venues will be common spots to find electronic dance music, at least a couple of times a month.
Venues
The following section list event series and promotions in Charlotte. This includes reoccurring events, and promotions/productions that regularly hosts events in the Queen City.
Events & Promotions
This concludes the Charlotte Electronic Music Scene Guide, for now 🙂.
*As this list may not be comprehensive, please PM me or send in a modmail if you have suggestions for edits, or have an event/promotion you would like added to the list. Please limit suggestions to those focused on electronic music in the city of Charlotte at this time.

The long, surreal Mockingbird narration offered an “explanation” for the evening’s lunar eclipse and contained Star Trek theme teases from Page. Mockingbird was played for the first time since Halloween, 1996 (135 shows).
LISTEN TO IT HERE:
Forbin/Mockingbird Narration summary via Phish.in:
This sweeping and cosmic version starts with Forbin zip-lining into a pond of blue jello, then lucid dreaming himself into a huge banquet where he gets skewered on a cosmic spit, before finally expanding into a spherical ball that floats into space, causing an eclipse. A grand and bizarre Mockingbird that is a fine example of late 90s Trey weirdness.
Narration Transcript
TREY: Welcome everybody on the Full Moon, very special… Thanks for having us by the way. Thanks for having us, happy to be here. Anyway, this is the full moon tonight, and it just so happens that I thought I would tell this story because it was a full moon the night that the person I was just singing about was climbing up the mountain I was just singing about. It reminded me of that because it was a full moon tonight.
So, anyway, on this particular night, our hero who I was just singing about, Colonel Forbin, was of course climbing up the mountain in Gamehendge there to try and find Icculus, and that's gonna get the Helping Friendly Book. So, he's climbing up the mountain anyway, and it was a well lit night. What happened on this particular night that was different from other nights when he had climbed the mountain was that he got up to the top, and he looked around and he saw, because it was lit up by the full moon, he could see the valley below him. He's on top of this incredibly huge cliff hanging over this mountain with jagged brown rocks looking down into this valley below and caverns and everything.
He's standing up there on this cliff and he looks down, and he sees that way off in the distance there is this beautiful little pond, kind of glistening. It was this blue pond. He knows that he's supposed to go up there and find Icculus and all that stuff, but he decides on this particular day that he's gotta change his plans. As he's standing there, he looks up to the right and he sees that somebody has attached a zip line running all the way from the top of this mountain, all the way down and over this beautiful pond.
So, he's standing there and he thinks, "Should I go up there and try to do all this stuff, you know, and find Icculus?" And he decides, no, I've gotta grab on to this zip line and go whizzing down, about half a mile from up on top of this mountain, all the way down, and just let go and drop myself into this pond.
So he looks up, and he starts to reach up with his hands. He sees the zipline up ahead of him, and he grabs onto it. He kind of rocks back and forth with it because he's definitely nervous. It's a long way down, and it's steep, and he knows it's gonna be fast. [mumbles and laughs] And, then all of the sudden, he closes his eyes and says, "It's now or never. One! Two! Three!"
[A wailing, high pitched screeching sound that replicates the sound of zipping down a line.]
POOMPH! He lets go. But, instead of landing in the water, he lands in the water and he realizes that there is no water there after all. It was actually a huge, blue vat of Jello. So, he drops off the zip line, he drops into this vat of blue Jello, and he suddenly finds himself sort of floating around, stuck in the blue Jello. It's at this point that he realizes, "there are no vats of blue jello in the valleys, up here in the mountains, I must be dreaming."
So here he finds himself floating in the vat of blue jello. He's sitting down there, and he's floating. He says, "This can't be real. I've got to be dreaming." So he starts to think to himself, "What can I do to test whether this is all reality, or if I'm actually in a really bizarre dream?" During which he decides, he pulls his arm up out of the jello, and it starts to get stuck, you know his body is stuck in the jello. He pulls his arm out of the jello and decides he's just gonna smack himself back and forth in the face a couple of times. That will see if he wakes up. If he wakes up, he figures he's in a dream, and if he doesn't wake up, it must be reality.
He's still in the jello. It didn't work. He didn't wake up. He's thinking there, "Oh no… What am I gonna do now that the smacking didn't work." [chuckling] So, anyway, there is he is floating. Then he starts thinking, and he thinks "Well, wait a minute. This could be a lucid dream." For those of you who don't know about lucid dreaming -- Mike here has filled me in, Mike here is a lucid dreamer -- that is where you get into a dream. This is real, this is… You get into a dream, and you realize that you're in a dream state. The first thing that generally happens is that you kind of start to freak out, and you wake up. A lucid dreamer is capable of realizing that they're in a dream state and staying asleep. Once this happens, everything around you becomes incredibly crystalline and almost more real than reality itself.
So, it's at this point in the vat of jello that Colonel Forbin realizes that he must actually be in a lucid dream, not in a normal dream. As soon as he realizes it, all of the colors around him, and all of the sounds become much more real and much more sharp and defined. Images are sharp and defined. Since Colonel Forbin has actually studied up on lucid dreaming, he realizes that he can get anything he wants in a lucid dream. When you're in a lucid dream, you can have anything you want.
There's a few little tricks of the trade. So, one of the things is if you wanna change scenery, all you have to do is turn around. So, he's stuck in the jello, and he says, "That's it. I wanna change the scenery." And, he turns around. He looks in front of him and there in front of him is a beautiful banquet, laid out on a banquet table. It's the most incredible… He hears the wind blowing, and he feels a cool breeze all around him. And, he sees food laid out in front of him. There's a huge comfortable chair, and he sits down in the comfortable chair.
Twenty hands come out of nowhere and start massaging his shoulders and then his body. He feels just incredible feelings all over his body. He's just, he's drifting, and he hears, he hears sounds emanating out of the walls. Then, he feels this stick going up through his body and out of his mouth, and he realizes that somebody has put him on this sensory spit. They're turning him around on this sensory spit, and all of his senses are being bombarded, smells and feelings and sounds. Incredible.
He's being turned slowly on the sensory spit, and as he looks in front of him he sees that part of the sensory spit is this banquet that I spoke of. Beautiful foods and incredible tastes and waiters dressed in tuxedos and white gloves walk out. They start to take grapes off the table, and they put them into his mouth. He eats the grapes, and he feels the incredible taste. He has desserts and cakes, and he just keeps eating and eating and eating. As he eats, he eats so much that he starts to feel really full, and he feels it in his stomach. He's fuller and fuller because he overdid it on the sensory spit. He stayed on the sensory spit too long, until he was well done.
His stomach begins to grow, and it grows and grows. He realizes as his stomach grows that he's turned into a giant ball. Eating all that food has turned him into an absolutely spherical ball. He realizes that he's bouncing up and down on the floor. So, here is his bloated, sensory spit body, Colonel Forbin, bouncing up and down on the floor of this banquet room. What he finds is that he starts to bounce, instead of... Because he's in this dream world, instead of slowly bouncing closer to the ground, he actually begins to bounce higher and higher into the air. So, each bounce is a little bit higher until, with each bounce, he finds himself drifting slower, slower, bouncing, higher, bouncing… Finally, the last bounce sends him careening off into space.
He just bounces off, right into outer space. Once he gets into outer space, he feels much better because there is no gravity pulling on his big, bloated belly. But, he's floating out in space, and he sees stars going by and, you know, spaceships and what not and, um, weird little creatures and beings. But, there he is, in outer space, and he floats so far off the Earth that he can see the entire solar system around him. He can see Mars and Pluto floating around. He stays in our solar system, though. He didn't bounce out of our solar system.
As he floats around, he sees himself floating around the Earth. He sees the sun blazing off in the distance, and he floats around the Earth. Soon the shadow of his round body starts to actually eclipse the moon, and the moon becomes blocked. His shadow is blocking the sun from the moon. Meanwhile, down on earth people think that there is an eclipse going on on the moon, but really it's Colonel Forbin's bloated dream body blocking out the sun. So if anybody happens to ask, you know the truth.
And, oh yeah, The Famous Mockingbirds flying around up there too.

2024.04.01 23:01 Realistic_Complex539 Finished my trip

Finished my trip
Camped at Linville Gorge from Friday to overnight yesterday. Friday, I hiked down the Babel Tower Trail, down to the river, back up to the Linville Gorge Trail and up the Cabin Trail. I moved camp on Saturday and went to check out the Linville Cavern. Sunday, went down Spence Ridge, crossed the river with some help, around Linville Gorge Trail to Devils Hole(couldn't cross the river), then continued to and up Babel Tower to the end. I encountered a certain part of the Linville Gorge Trail that terrified the shit out of me, but I survived. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice, I'm hoping to make it out there again some time before I leave NC.

Picks Of The Week (by u/lefuniname)

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, the clocks made that confusing jumpy thingy again - Spring has sprung! What better way to celebrate the blossoming beauties of nature than basking in the wonderful sun-ics coming out of the up-and-comers of the scene?

1. Dylan Purser - City In Lights EP [Galacy]

Recommended if you like: Hiraeth, Keeno, Telomic
Of course, we cannot go full-send right away on our journey through all things new(-ish), so let's instead start with something rather vibey - Dylan Purser's debut EP!
In case you don't know him yet, Dil-hun Puh-suh, as his university knows him, is one of the finest gems the liquid scene has brought forth in recent times. Originally from way up north in Darwen, he then made the mind-boggling choice to move to Birmingham, of all places, to take a crack at studying Music Technology. That didn't come out of nowhere though, Dylan was already a pursuer of the arts when he made that move, with his first self-releases and SoundCloud uploads having started rolling in 2018. Across bootlegs of The 1975 and the seminal European anthem Better Off Alone, plus various polaroided originals, he explored his musical identity, with Dylan trying out anything from Chillout and Hiphop to "Dance" and, of course, DnB. While he did also try his hands at Dubstep, with his bootleg of Flite's Joy, and even some heavier DnB on Debunked in 2021, the more relaxing vibes did win the battle of the subgenres in the end, with his first big break (dy)landing via UKF's Pilot that same year.
However, while he would fit right in at Pilot, he soon started steering his career towards outer space, towards the Galaxy Of Dreams™️. Sure, he has he been an active member of the Liquicity community for a while now, but 2023 was when things really kicked off. Not only did he release on both its sister label Ridmic and even on the main label's Winter compilation, he also played a most wonderful set at the community stream event, the summer festival's Nebula stage and Family Day. His collaboration with songwriters isn't just limited to DnB though, on his work with Nina McKendrick, with whom he created the Music production house AMIS MUSIC, and Sarah Michie he also ventures out into the Pop and Rock spheres every now and then.
On City In Lights, Dylan's delightful debut EP on Liquicity's lush Liquid-focused offshoot Galacy, we're all about the night time drive vibes though! With its ebbing and flowing piano chords, floating synths and wonderful vocal sample, Day Relief is already giving us plenty of loveliness to enjoy the evening with, but Bliss really raises the bar to a whole 'nother level. With the absolutely marvellous, sadly all too rarely actually on tracks appearing, Leeds-based singer-songwriter Lauren Walton once again showing the world just how gorgeous her vocals can be, we're already off to a great start, but Dylan also knows exactly how to fill the rest of the arrangement, with beautiful waves of synths washing over you, subtle piano chords slowly but surely extending into this plucky guitar-y vibe, and a talent for taking his sweet time to weave them all in and out as necessary. Even at almost 6 minutes runtime, you kind of just want more.
Luckily, we still got a couple more tunes to go! After the euphoria of its predecessor, Twilight takes down the energy levels a little bit, with only gently rolling drums, the most pleasant of pianos and a warm bed of bass greeting us at first. However, soon enough, some magical synth plucks join in on the fun, becoming more and more jittery as time goes on, resulting in not just a rather satisfying progression, but also in my brain being scritched just right. On Let Me Go we go down another notch on the energy ladder, cruising through the empty citey with some breaky, lo-fi midnight vibes. For those insomniacs out there, we still got one more to go through: Sleepless Nights, with Blackburnian singer-songwriter Ella Hammill. While fast-paced drums attempt to keep us up all night, the enchanting arrangement of delightful melodies paired with Ella's dreamy vocal performance will slowly make you drift away into the galaxy of dreams for some much-needed rest.
My Dylantidote of choice for seasonal depression. Simply wonderful.
Other liquid from this week: - Telomic, KINSELLA - Selfish - Styke, switch/case, Steo - Let You Know - Operate, Rizzle, Catching Cairo, Verbz - Active - Sonnet - Hung Up 💎 - Metal Work, Just Mack - Purity EP - Tyler Dayley, Children Of Zeus - Small Circles (Calibre Remix)

2. Various Artists - Adaptations, Gen. III [Blackout Music]

Recommended if you like: Finding new Neuro-adjacent artists!
As evidenced by the sprawling Evolutions compilation series, Dutch neurofunk forge Blackout has always been on the lookout for new talents in the scene. Even when said series came to an end with its 10th edition in 2021, the Adaptations series picked the mantle back up just a year later, regularly presenting all sorts of exciting names from all over the world, one compilation EP at a time. Now, let's see what this third generation of Blackout recruits has to offer!
First, we head on over to the North East of France, where Mona L'Huillier, aka Eluun, has not just been tirelessly working to push bass music in her home town of Nancy in the past few years, but has also been busy crafting her very own creations for more than a decade now. As Sian Area, she's been traversing the whole electronic music spectrum, from colourful Midtempo or Dubstep, to, of course, even DnB, since 2011! Eventually, however, she grew tired of the alias and the associated baggage, and rebranded herself as Eluun in 2017, with a slew of multi-genre releases on Kinphonic to boot. From 2018 on, the project was on a bit of a hiatus, during which Mona focussed on getting her bass music event brand N87 off the ground, but since last year, she's back in action again! After a couple super sick bootlegs, she now tops it all off with the absolutely journey of a tune that is Unseen. What starts out as just a single tight drum loop and a lethargic analogue synth, grows with additional drum action, bright synth walls, a unique bird song like vocal, until it explodes into a mad whirlwind of newschool beauty - truly something to behold.
Next, we've got a dynamite duo straight out of the Neurofunk centre that is the Czech Republic: Karpa and Zigi SC! While Karpa has been straight-up popping off in recent times, with releases on Skamele, Hoofbeats, Cause4Concern and Sinful Maze in just the last few months, Brno-based Vojtěch "Karpa" Karpíšek has been in this game since way back in 2013. A free download here, some Trap and Hip-Hop there, but once 2023 rolled around, it was full steam ahead! Similarly, Prague-based Neuro ambassador Ondrej "Zigi SC" Zegzulka has been smashing Dancefloors all over the continent, with regular appearances at Beats For Love, Let It Roll and Darkshire, since at least 2018, and in 2020, the first official productions followed. Labels like Close2Death, Empire, Sinful Maze, Cause4Concern, collaborations with A-Cray, Prdk, Confusion - especially the last year or so was filled with one banger after another. Now, these two regularly collaborating forces of nature once again collide to bring us Blood Payments! Rhythmically infectious, ridiculously danceable, bursting with Czech energy, that's a banger alright!
We keep on going further East, towards Yuzhnoukrainsk, the Ukrainian home town of CrucifyMe! While the project from Evgeniy Spotar is still rather fresh - his first release only landed in 2021 - he's already made his mark on NickBee's label Axon, Paperfunk, Invasion, T3K, Grid and many more, with his assortment of sounds from techy to funky minimal, earning himself a bunch of VISION Radio plays along the way. For this special debut on Blackout, Evgeniy reached out to none other than German power duo-trio-one-man-show Instinkt! Helmed by Mannheim-based veteran of the scene, label chief of T3K and genuine force for good in the underground, Florian "Kaiza" Kaiser, this project has seen all sorts of changes since its creation in 2014. Whether as just Kaiza and Rune, or together with Kill Tomorrow's Tomtek, Instinkt has always brought the heat, with releases on more minimal/deep labels like Lifestyle and Delta9 to more straight-forward Neuro platforms like Cause4Concern and Bad Taste, until the project came to a bit of stop in 2019. Until now, that is! On Dirty Mind, Evgeniy and Florian, alongside a couple others that might or might not be part of the new Instinkt group, join forces to deliver an absolute smasher of a tune, full of gnarly basses, forward-pushing rhythms and generally bass-face-causing sounds!
On our fourth stop, we take a trip to the place whose DnB scene was the subject of countless of outraged Facebook posts and Tweets: the United States! Straight outta Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Tom Kinsey, aka Dropset, has gone from strength to strength, whether we're talking about his decades of DJing experience under the guidance of Depth One, his years of Neurofunk production mentored by the likes of Philth, Akov and Joe Ford, or his physical strength, thanks to his day job as a personal trainer and his blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Just like his Nage Waza, his productions are absolutely lethal, leading to releases on Abducted, Korsakov, Neuroheadz, Bad Taste, Eatbrain, and, like, so many more! In other words, it was only a matter of time, until Blackout joined the list, with Fracture. Not just the injury you might sustain from raving to this sort of music, but also a banging tune full of nasty, distorted basses, atmospheric sounds straight out of a horror movie and proper bonky snares.
Next, a rather PRFCT Man: it is Jev! Latvian at heart, but nowadays a proper UK lad(vian), and the surviving half of PRFCT Mandem - there's no story quite like Jevgenijs Semelis'. For those who don't know: Back in 2019, him and Aisling McDonough, also known as Aisling Zita, started their collaborative musical journey off with delightfully fun and incredibly energetic DJ sets on the Bloc2Bloc streams. However, there was way more to them: Not only were they running a YouTube Vlog channel documenting their progress as artists, they also ran a Patreon and put their heart, soul and humour into creating some sick, sick beats. After wow-ing the label manager at Korsakov with their submission to the Future Stars compilation, they signed on for a whole bunch of EPs, before trying their hand at doing things on their own for a bit. However, by the time 2022 rolled around, Aisling felt the project became a bit of an obligation instead of the fun creative outlet it once was, so they decided to call it quits. Lucky for us, Jev continued the madness on his own as it is Jev, blasting the scene with one insane self-release after the other, remixing Crissy Criss & Malux & Erb n Dub and Neonlight, and now apparently entering his Neuro arc, with Collapse! As always, chock-full of all sorts of manic switchups (you just wait for the Hardcore), ridiculous in-your-face sound design and just general insanity.
Lastly, we are finnishing things off with Finnish mad lad Viktor Hurskainen and his truly insane DnB project Teniak! One look at his socials might make you believe he's more of a travel influencer, but there's one thing he somehow loves even more than travelling: music! For around 20 years (!) now, Viktor has been pursuing one musical outlet after another, whether it's band projects, his music studies in London or composing for film and media, and since 2021, he's poured his energy into Teniak! Not always necessarily under the DnB umbrella, but always full-on crazy, his self-releases were already setting off banger alarms everywhere he went, eventually leading to double singles on ProgRAM and Ignescent in 2023, and, well, Blackout now! On Yetpak, Viktor effortlessly tosses us around the room, with a back-and-forth so viciously catchy, arranged in such a maniacally chaotic yet completely controlled manner, and filled with such menacing energy, that you can't help but love it.
A treasure trove of pure Neurofunk gold from all over the world. My dream, in other words.
Other Neurofunk from this week: - Tryst Temps - Pyramids EP - Khronos - Titan's Revenge - HighThere - Symphony Of Destruction

Finding the little things that make playing fun again
I was burning out a few months ago after losing my 'honeymoon period' from returning to neopets. I got too caught up in the grind and stopped having fun, so I started buying books based on color.
When I won an extra $100k in the FC, I bought books of a certain color until I ran out of those nps. It's brought me a lot of joy! And made it way more fun trying to accomplish my book award goal ✨
If anyone else does little things like this that bring them joy in the game, I'd love to hear them!

2024.03.30 21:28 thespacestone Jason Goes To Hell reworked/rewrite concept

Jason Goes To Hell reworked/rewrite concept
Title: FRIDAY THE 13th PART IX
Sub-Title: Jason Goes To Hell or The Final Friday
Film seeks to replace "Jason Goes to Hell" in the Jason Voorhees saga. The piece would be shot more in the style of the Paramount Pictures 'Friday the 13th' films, rather than the New Line Cinema "Jason" titles.
This film will use bits and pieces of the original Jason Goes to Hell as a textural template for overall art/design direction and supporting plot devices.
This movie does away with Jason Goes to Hell's entire plot (aside from Jason actually going to Hell) and abandon's these concepts:
  • Jason's Deadite connection
  • Necronomicon
  • Magic Dagger
  • Voorhees sister and extended family
  • Massive Halloween style family property
  • FBI Mortar Explosion
  • Heart-eating Coroner
  • Only a Voorhees can actually kill Jason
  • Jason's Body-hopping Demon snake form
  • Creighton Duke
  • Shaving
I’ve thought about this one in particular for a few years, so prepare for a long read, bare with me:
My answer is Jason Goes To Hell because I think it’s a huge missed opportunity for what could’ve been an amazing 9th Friday the 13th film…. First off, I would’ve made the intro a direct follow up to Part 8, it would’ve opened up with what Jason actually looked like floating in the flood of toxic waste in the sewers. The authorities’ and media’s reaction to the ”mysterious” events of Part 8. I would’ve made a series of shots pertaining to his journey from NYC back to Crystal Lake & what he was doing in between Part 8 & 9. I would’ve had the FBI & state agencies investigating the several Crystal Lake incidents + cover ups over the years. I would’ve also shown the FBI taking huge precedent to figure out what Jason is, to target Jason for the killing of a NYPD officer, & eventually track him down. Then if I can adjust some of the years that previous Paramount Pictures F13 films allegedly take place in - I can have the film itself pick up a few years after Part 8, taking place within the actual 90s (when the irl version was filmed). I would also keep Jason’s design from the irl JGTH movie the same in my version. It’s awesome looking & the toxic waste from Manhattan perfectly explains why he looks the way he does in JGTH. I would also make Tommy from Part 6 be our main protagonist.
Jason Goes to Hell should be the “Halloween Kills” of Jason movies if that makes sense, meaning a “grand scale slasher” film, just really aggressive and huge. Jason should’ve started his killing spree with the FBI trap in the beginning, but Tommy would’ve been the bait person. Jason would’ve killed the FBI strike-team, and then began cutting his way through previously established areas in the Crystal Lake region of New Jersey (Pinehurst, Camp Crystal Lake, Packanack Lodges, Shoreline Homes, etc). He would eventually make his way into the actual town of Crystal Lake, stopping at nothing trying to kill Tommy Jarvis. Jason would cut down all sorts of townsfolk, police, rednecks, & even more federal agents. The film would see Jason kill an utterly ridiculous amount of people, at least 40-50 bodies minimum in this one film.
No blowing up Jason, no body hopping worm, no sister Voorhees, no Voorhees mansion, no Evil Dead references, no shaving . There would be a massive emphasis in this movie - on questioning what Jason is in the public eye. It would be all over the news…How he was just a myth for decades and it’s discovered there actually is in fact some supernatural being that is killing dozens of people in New Jersey. A nationwide alert would get put out & a national manhunt begins. An APB is put out & the roads going in & out of the greater Crystal Lake Region are now being closed/cordoned off by Federal Agents. An evacuation order is put in effect for residents of the Crystal Lake region of New Jersey. As the body count rises, Jason creates such a high level emergency in the region that random townsfolk and other people in the region start to arm themselves and take shelter together. So in the true firey over-the-top nature of this film; There would have to be a scene of Jason slashing his way through an early-90s SWAT team, decapitating, de-limbing, impaling, and just utterly destroying a group of M16 armed officers. (similar to a group of lost scenes from Halloween 5). But he has to do it with a Chainsaw…this is the only weapon I don’t think I’ve actually seen Jason use. Not quite action-horror, but 1000% intensity for a slasher. It needs to feel utterly overkill lol just ridiculous in a horrifying way.
Local law enforcement, federal task forces, and even a platoon of soldiers from the New Jersey National Guard are deployed into the area, & the manhunt for Jason continues. Helicopters, K-9 teams, & soldiers now patrol the woods & other areas around Crystal Lake. Jason of course stealths his way through the woods, around the lake and town. He murders many of these authorities along the way…in rapid fashion, even facing a couple of crowds of first responders at points. Jason cuts his way through a diner, a department store, an auto shop, a news station, a bar, a movie rental store, focusing on other characters he knows will lead him to Tommy. Jason encounters a mob outside of a gas station & after killing a few of them, several of them wrestle and beat him down with bats & axes into a gas pump. However, this cluster of fighting rips the pump line out - covering Jason + the group of men in gasoline. As they struggle, Jason begins to overpower the group of them, one screaming man loses his mind - unloads a revolver into Jason’s hockey mask. The 5th shot sparking & igniting the gasoline on all of them, causing a massive explosion killing them all (except for Jason). The explosion covers Jason in fire & he slow walks across the road, to a small overpass above one of Crystal Lake’s creeks. Jason flings himself forward off of the overpass and he falls a couple stories into shallow water. He climbs up out of the water, but is now being converged on by a helicopter and soldiers from the National Guard. One soldier gets to the scene first and sees Jason down in the creek water, so he just absolutely unloads his M16 on full auto into Jason. A few other soldiers hear the commotion and join the trooper in firing at Jason. Jason is physically stunned by the amount of gunfire, & struggles to move out of the way, slowly fleeing under the overpass. Filled with more bullets upon every step, until he is eventually injured by some of the National Guard. Having been hit with something more heavy (maybe an M60 or a Barett M82), Jason barely manages to evade the National Guard while still hunting for Tommy. Obviously killing more armed/scared individuals he encounters in his pursuit. The whole time, Jason is hearing loud auditory hallucinations of his mother’s voice, encouraging him to kill (similar to the game). Maybe there’s even a moment where Jason stares motionless at his mother’s grave for a minute.
Tommy Jarvis would somehow figure out 2 true ways to “stop” Jason this time. One way would be to cause an explosion the equivalent of a high-yield missile (which he does not have the means to access at all)……Orrrrr; Impale Jason with a metal rod on Friday the 13th - during a lightning storm, & have him get struck by said lightning twice AGAIN ….Which would then cause a portal/rift to Hell to open up under the soil Jason is standing on, where he is then pulled under the dirt by eldritch looking demons (like in the actual JGTH we have irl). This of course would be happening in the same graveyard where Jason’s corpse was originally resurrected by Tommy & bad-luck Friday the 13th lightning in Part 6. Tommy is also injured by the lightning, scarring his face a bit.
After Jason is unalived ; The media presence that had been growing on the other side of the federal road blocks around the region is buzzing. I would show reporters giving their own reports/versions of the events they think they have gathered. But as the camera passes each separate repotenews team, can all be heard giving excerpts of the actual history of Jason Voorhees, how he drowned, how his mother killed 2 groups of teens at the summer camp he drowned at, how he actually never died and grew up living off the land on the other side of the lake, how he allegedly saw his mother beheaded, and that he was responsible for a large week-long massacre in the region, during the summer of 1984. They would mention the case of a copycat, & Tommy Jarvis’s relationship with Jason. They would report that Jason did actually die in 1984 & that any official info regarding Jason after that year is either redacted or missing records. They would report about the decades of public anecdotes; Alleged supernatural happenings, evil spirits, and mostly of Jason existing as a reanimated corpse. How a corpse allegedly killed a cop in NYC & escaped the state undetected. How it’s unclear what exactly happened, except that an Entity in Hockey Mask definitely hacked its way through the Crystal Lake region that week, in the fall of 1993. And that 40-50 people are dead because of this new Friday the 13th incident.
I would still have the hockey mask get unearthed by a dog on a windy day, & the camera watches the mask get pulled under the dirt by Freddy’s glove. Roll Credits.
I would include an after credits cutscene (yes I know it’s 1993 but bear with me:) The camera suddenly cuts to a massive cavern & on all sides of the cavern (but the ground) there are walls of flames, making a tunnel of fire; The ground is flooded & sits below a waist-high creek of steaming blood… the blood began to simmer & froth, it rapidly boils; & similarly to Frank in Hellraiser; the blood starts to take shapes & those shapes become solids, they start to form into ribs, a spine, a skull, bones & cartilage, a nervous system, eyes, muscle fibers, tendons, organs…the blood would continue to flow but now upwards & against gravity. Forming a human body in reverse, every single part of human anatomy rematerialized from blood. When the flesh & body are freshly reformed within the blood, the body suddenly catches fire & the flames furiously burns like jet propulsion. This body is fully incinerated for a few minutes. The body then thrashes around silently in unimaginable pain, falling into the creek of boiling blood but the liquid doesn’t put the flames out. After a while the flames suddenly stops like they were hit by an off-button. In the smoke we see Jason Voorhees just like how he appeared at the end of Jason Goes To Hell. He stands up & starts to wade into a massive lake of blood. The cavern & creek open up into a massive ethereal valley, in the valley is mountains covered by a forest of trees, but the entire forest is on fire. The sky would be red, orange, & bruised black, with thick hazy smoke & embers permeating Jason’s atmosphere. Throughout the valley & mountains, are little rivers & inlets made of blood… In the center of the massive Forest of Flames is a huge lake of blood with a dock. - This place would be like some hellified version of Crystal Lake that Jason is now forced to roam, now that he’s in Hell.
I want it to be just over the top, but still ringing true to paramount-era Jason. It should stand as correction, like they are making up for how bad Part 8 was. I want it to be Halloween Kills level grandiose & swinging as high as possible. Like the film should reflect the franchise being aware of its own tropes & identity - yet it has fun with those tropes in the most serious & respectful possible manner, while still being the biggest & bloodiest F13 of them all. It should be scary and the violence should be a little shocking.
If I was directing, I would also have pulled strings at New Line, the MPAA & any theaters at the time, to release it as an NC-17 rating, because I would want the gore/violence in this film to be really intense - but mostly on that level as an SFX tribute to Tom Savini in Part 4/Final Chapter. I would especially try to justify the higher rating since Showgirls (1995) got an NC-17 & that saw a major theater release. Evil Dead (1981) released X rated & also saw a major theater release. I am not joking I would want this movie to exude fire and just be utterly blood-soaked. A true testament to slashers, and an ode to the 1982-89 era Friday the 13th.
That’s just an outlined idea that felt fun. It would also be titled Friday the 13th Part IX: Jason Goes to Hell or Friday the 13th Part IX: The Final Friday
TLDR; After an FBI trap fails, Jason goes into frenzy-mode across the whole crystal lake region, chasing Tommy Jarvis. A massive manhunt ensues…the FBI, the townsfolk, & even the military get involved, 40-50+ people die around lake & town. Greater Crystal Lake area gets evacuated; Jason kills tons of armed people, cops, agents, a SWAT team, & a mob. He gets set on fire in an explosion, then lit up by the Army, & lured to his old cemetery. Tommy pulls a reverse beginning of Part 6 on Jason with lightning & creates a Hell-portal, eldritch demons finally dragging Jason to hell. Jason rematerializes Uncle Frank-from-Hellraiser-style in Hell. Jason wanders around through fire & finds a super hellified-version of Crystal Lake where the forest is all just flaming trees, Crystal Lake is a lake of blood, & the sky is burning.
