2024.05.16 21:03 Icy_Yam_3610 WIBTA if I try to get my daughters teacher fired for his comments on what girls are wearing and implying if they get assulted it's their fault?

So my daughter goes to a small town middle school with kids aged 10- 13 and they have a dress code , no shoulders showing , no skirts above finger length no bellies, no breasts no bra straps showing , a few others. ( I have a problem with this as I see it as sexiest and belittling but my daughter likes PJ'S and sweaters and its not an issiue for her so I bite my tongue)
Today she came home upset because a teacher told all the kids, he won't teach anyone not dressed appropriately, that "as a male teacher he feels uncomfortable and doesn't want to be responsible if something happens."
This blew my mind she took it as him saying if HE did anything to the girls, which maybe but I think more likely he means if someone else does BUT honestly eithier way it is disgusting! First it doesn't matter what a child is wearing if you see it sexually YOUR the problem and second he just told a bunch of preteens what woman wear determines how likely they are to be assulted and it is their fault if they are.
I want him fired I don't feel comfortable with him around my child and don't think he should be aloud around any of them .. but I'm willing to admit I might be to close to this- thought?

Hello folks. I am working on a case with middle school aged kids and elementary aged kids. With middle schoolers do yall have any ideas on fun activities to do at the placement home? I was thinking of bringing books to read but for a kid about to enter high school I’m not sure if that’s particularly interesting or a bonding activity. What are some ideas you have done in the past (that can be done inside the home)

2024.05.16 20:49 KitSwiftpaw [LFA] Sarah Belmondo Lecarde, Dhampyr Vampyr Hunter

Backstory: Unlike most Dhampyr, Sara was born not of mortal mother and immortal father, but a mortal father and Immortal mother, with vampirism forced upon the mother in an act of betrayal and lies. Her mother, stricken with grief, carried Sara to term and raised her to be a proud vampyr hunter of the Lecarde clan, and added in lessons in vampyric abilities as well, using her new perspective to help teach her daughter. After discovering that the father was a distant relative as well, from a different family branch, Sara's middle name was added to "Show them just what their arrogance has returned to this world." Now a grown woman, Sara ventures out to collect 18 years of Child Support Payments, and thwart that necromancer's plans for good.
Appearance: Sara Lecarde is tall, impressively so, over six feet tall. She is muscular, but not incredibly so, her lean figure hiding supernatural strength. She wears somewhat fancy looking clothes under her armored shirt, which is made of animal hide and large lizard scales, and a fancy jacket over that. Unlike many of her predecessors, she favors darker colors. Midnight blues and Eggplant Purples, and Sanguine reds. (Think like a cross of Castlevania and Bloodborne)
Equipment: Sara carries several items with her everywhere. A polished steel mirror, several wooden stakes kept either on a bandolier or sheathed on the inside of her jacket, a flask or two of holy water, a small wooden shield for extra protection, a silver cross necklace that bears the image of a spiraling comet in the center, and a silver cane that hides a deadly secret, meant to evoke memories of a long missing clan, with the catch of a button and the flick of the wrist, the silver wires hidden in the cane go slack, segmenting it and revealing gleaming silver teeth as it lashes out as a whip. It's nothing compared to the Vampire Slayer of legend, but legends tend to be inflated... after all, a great weapon is useless in unskilled hands.

2024.05.16 20:25 Excellent-Garage8232 What heat combo minimizes damage to the hair the least?

I have pretty wavy hair, it’s very frizzy and damaged, and it always stays the same length (armpit length). I used to have super long healthy hair that wasn’t nearly as frizzy as it is now back when I was a middle schooler. Looking back I think my hair health started crashing ever since teenage me decided to use heat on my hair majority of the days.
I want my hair to get healthier and longer. But I also cannot stand the way my hair looks without taming my frizzy waves. I just want to know what heat combo minimizes damage to hair the least and I’m hoping someone will be able to answer this for me.
  1. Airdry, heat protectant, than straightening iron.
  2. Heat protectant, blow dryer brush.
  3. Heat protectant, regular blow dryer + thermal brush.
  4. Any other ways?

2024.05.16 20:10 kayakero What are market cycles in the financial markets?

What are market cycles in the financial markets?
When you want to invest in the stock market or trade, it is important to be trained, especially if you are a beginner or Dummy. And one of the concepts that you need to know, and that we teach in our trading courses, are the market cycles in trading and the stock market. It is important to take them into account, so in this article we are going to delve into it.
As a premise, we can affirm that market cycles are the trends that can occur in a given market and environment; These patterns allow some financial assets to perform better than others. Although these cycles rarely have a specific beginning and end point and are best identified when they have already occurred, by following appropriate trading strategies investors can benefit economically from the oscillations of market cycles, identifying the turns or cycle changes.

The phases of the market cycle

Knowing the phases of the market cycle helps us anticipate possible turns in it. It is not easy, it is very difficult to know exactly what month, day or time it can occur, so you have to be attentive, be aware of the information coming from analysts, media and investors to find those changes in the cycle and anticipate
You've probably heard of bubbles and maybe know someone who has been trapped in them. And you can learn a lot from them, but despite this, many investors forget about them when they intervene in the financial markets. We must prevent these turns from catching us off guard and to do so it is essential to train: know the different phases, understand how the markets work and learn technical analysis.
Cycles are frequent in all aspects of life and markets were not going to be any less; So from the outset we can affirm that there are short-term movements or, on the contrary, long-term movements.
Whatever market we are interested in, keep in mind that all markets have similar characteristics and go through the same phases: they are cyclical. They go up, down and down, going up again. When one cycle ends, the next begins.
The problem arises when investors, and there is a large majority, do not remember that financial markets move in cycles, which can lead them to face big problems.
This article is related to the current that links this period with a possible end of the cycle and if so, you may have to make a decision or exit your buying positions and start thinking about sales, or stay but very well protected.
https://preview.redd.it/jl2tkwt3xt0d1.png?width=744&format=png&auto=webp&s=53db3fd10c92e561c7d4a40809fac2ae0b725e69
Let's get right into knowing what the phases of the market cycle are:
Accumulation phase
This phase occurs after the market has bottomed. Here managers who have experience and investors with many tables begin to buy despite the trend. They think the worst is over. If you are in stocks, it is likely that your purchases are highly attractive, bought very close to minimums, or even below your historical records. The overall market sentiment remains bearish.
Media articles preach gloom and gloom, and those who went long through the worst of the bear market have recently capitulated, that is, they have given up and sold the rest of their holdings in disgust. But in the accumulation phase, prices have flattened and for every seller who throws in the towel, there is a brave and experienced investor who picks up. Overall market sentiment begins to shift from negative to neutral .
Bull market phase
At this stage, the market has been stable for a while and is starting to move higher. They start to get on the bus. This group includes technicians who, seeing that the market is making lower highs and higher highs, recognize that the direction and sentiment of the market has changed.
Media stories are beginning to discuss the possibility that the worst is over, but unemployment continues to rise, as do reports of layoffs in many sectors. As this phase matures, more investors get on the bus, the feeling of greed prevails , replacing that of fear. It's funny because right now the strong hands are unloading their positions and starting to leave paper until prices start to level out, or when the rally slows down, the stragglers who have been sitting on the sidelines see it as an opportunity to buy and jump. mass.
Prices make a final parabolic movement, known in technical analysis as a selling climax, which is recognized as the greatest gains in the shortest periods are when they occur. Come on, we scalpers put on our boots! But the cycle is approaching the top of the bubble. Sentiment goes from neutral to bullish to straight up euphoric during this phase.
Distribution Phase
In the third phase of the market cycle, sellers begin to dominate. This part of the cycle is identified by a period in which the bullish sentiment of the previous phase turns into mixed sentiment. Prices can often stay locked in a trading range that can last a few weeks or even months.
For example, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) peaked in January 2000, it traded close to its previous peak and stayed there for a period of more than 18 months.
But the distribution phase can come and go quickly. For the Nasdaq, the distribution phase was less than a month, as it peaked in March 2000 and then retreated shortly after.
When this phase is over, the market reverses direction. Classic patterns such as double and triple cups, as well as upper head and shoulders patterns , are examples of movements that occur during the distribution phase. The distribution phase is a very emotional time for the markets as investors are gripped by periods of complete fear interspersed with hope and greed as the market can sometimes appear to be taking off again.
Valuations are extreme on many issues and strong hands have been sitting for a long time. Sentiment is slowly and surely beginning to change, although it is a transition that can happen quickly if accelerated by a strongly negative geopolitical event or bad economic news.
Bearish phase
The fourth and final phase of the cycle is the most painful for those who still have positions. Many cling because their investment has fallen below what they paid for it, behaving like a pirate who falls overboard clutching a bar of gold, refusing to let go in the vain hope of being rescued. Only when the market is down 50% or more do the laggards, many of whom bought during the distribution or early markdown phase, give up or capitulate .
This is where strong hands start to buy and a sign that bottoming is imminent . Here the pessimism is maximum, again this phase will go to accumulation and the latter will start an upward trend and the cycle will begin.

How long can an economic cycle last?

There is no set deadline for each cycle. A cycle can last anywhere from a few weeks to a number of years, depending on the market in question and the time horizon you are looking at.
A day trader with five-minute bars may see four or more complete cycles per day, while, for a real estate investor, one cycle may last 18-20 years.
Although, as we have indicated, there is no specific duration for each cycle, we can distinguish them in this classification in relative terms of time:
  • Short cycles: the average duration of short cycles is about 40 months , without normally reaching the depression phase. They are also known as Kitchin cycles or small cycles.
  • Average cycles: the estimated duration of an average cycle ranges on average between 7 and 11 years . They are a succession of short cycles that are not completely overcome and end up leading to an economic crisis. The middle cycles are also known as Minstrel cycles.
  • Long cycles: obviously long cycles are those that persist the most over time, with a duration that ranges between 47 and 60 years and an average of 54 years in duration. The phases in long cycles, also known as Kondratieff cycles, are gentle and slow. To reach the boom takes a long time and it does so slowly, just like the recession, but it leads to a large-scale economic depression.
Know where we are at all times
It is not necessary to confirm that it is necessary to know what cycle we are in if we move in the world of stock market investments and do trading. But more than knowing where we are at all times, which is not difficult to find out, what we should try to know is when a phase will end and the next one will begin.
To analyze these phases or cycles, we can use some well-known indicators:
  • GDP: if GDP rises, we would find ourselves in an expansionary phase, in which wealth creation is common. If, on the other hand, GDP falls, we would be in a recession phase, with the consequent loss of wealth.
  • Employment: the unemployment rate can tell us what phase of the cycle we are in. If we are in a time of recession, jobs seem to have disappeared, with a high unemployment rate. In times of wealth or expansion, the unemployment rate drops thanks to the creation of new jobs.
Finally, it is convenient to distinguish between economic cycles and seasonal variations or long-term trends.
In trading and the stock market for dummies , with our trading and stock market training courses, we help people who want to invest in the stock market or do trading to observe, distinguish and learn how to manage their investments.

2024.05.16 19:44 freudzaddy I share a name with an adult film actor… advice?

Hi friends!
I’m finishing grad school and am headed into my first school this August. Yay!
But the downside… I’ve known since middle school that there is a relatively popular adult film actor who shares my first and last name. It’s very clear that this isn’t me (mostly because they are dead now), but I am worried about the implications on my practice. Especially a middle schooler, I could see them googling my name and sharing those cursory findings with parents and peers, who, without context, could assume this is me.
I feel like I only have three options at my disposal, but was wondering what ideas/thoughts/opinions those out in the schools might have.
Option 1: Change my last name entirely Option 2: Use my middle name as a last (unsure if this is allowed in public schools) Option 3: Tell admin off the bat and just face questions as they come up.
TIA for your thoughts on this! I don’t want to get off on the wrong foot, nor overreact if it seems minimal to outsiders. :)

2024.05.16 19:41 MANARAOO My Mother destroyed my in-law's life

Helloooo Charlot, I love you so much you are so funny and close to the heart I feel like I am sitting with my friends back home talking gossips when I watch your videos hahahaa . So sorry if my English is not good
First of all I want to apologize. My story is not funny but I really need advice I cant sleep and always thinking I cry in my prayers ask Allah for forgiveness and can not trust anyone.
I am female 28 from Egypt living in Dubai now
First of all I have to tell you I was Raised in Egypt from a middle class family .. buuuuut we always lived like poor, my father loved saving money he didn't like spending money at all even meat or chickens we only had it once a week growing up. Still I have to be fair, my father was a great man he is the best husband and father really always loving and caring for us. May he rest in peace. But I never felt like my mom loved him she always used to complain about him wishing him to die even saying in his face I wish you die and we enjoy your money. I cant blame my mom, still I never agreed with her. After his death she bought us a new home in a fancy neighborhood in Cairo and tried to fit in with the community, but it was always as clear as the sun that we don't belong there.
I got married to an Egyptian guy from a very rich family he was born and raised in Dubai (Arranged mirage), His father is the sweetest man ever I call him father and I really feel like Allah gave me this man replacing the hole in my heart after losing my dear father. Even his mother is a really nice lady she is so classy and since my mirage 5 years ago she never put her nose in our business or anything even we live in the same street. She teached me how to eat, dress, speak like a Dubai lady, me always asking her what is her opinion and she give me her comments in the nicest way possible
Nooow where is the problem... since the beginning of my mirage I was unable to get pregnant we waited for almost two years which is a long time for a middle eastern family, finally when we visited me and my husband discovered that I have issues and need to be treated. My mom called my husband from Egypt asked him to not tell anyone about this thinking that people might think less of me (( WE ARE NOT IN EGYPT ANYMORE)) No one have this mentality here. She was so scared that he might divorce me for this reason and she loses all of this, but deep inside I know hw would never do that he took me to biggest hospitals allover Dubai. Later on I got to know that when people asked her about my pregnancy she used to lie and tell that my husband have issues, Which means people will think less of him now. I got really mad at her but I cant show it (in our culture we can not raise our voices to the parents).
My mother in law we will call her (Su) got to know about the rumor, she spoke to me and she was very angry. Stupid me told my mom about this and they both fought it was kind of big drama lasted for sometime but it all ended when I got pregnant.. My husband funded the entire trip for my mother to come take care of me during my pregnancy this was the first time my mom leave Egypt she was so happy and honestly I was even happier for her specially my husband family have nice home and cars she really lived like a queen for three month everyday Su send us breakfast, lunch, and dinner with the driver.
They started talking to each other again like nothing ever happened, alhamdulilha I have a very beautiful baby girl she is a gift frim god.
Su's friends wanted to visit me to give gifts and pray for the baby.. that day my mom insistent she will cook Egyptian local food for them and show then the actual Egyptian culture. They came and left we had fun and everything went amazing. In the evening Su called me to check on me, my phone was in speaker and mom was next to me.... As usual I asked ((How was the presentation and everything)) Su answered (( the food was good but I have a comment, next time wipe the dished and glasses you can not give people wet dished, but it is ok I guess they understand your mom used to live in the village and she is doing the best she knows))
Now I knowwww this was rude but believe me I know Su very well she doesn't mean anything bad and if she knew my mom is hearing she wouldn't say that. After closing with Su my mom started shouting saying why do you allow her talking to you like that and she raised her voice till my husband woke up and the moment she saw him coming down she started crying telling him please book my tickets I will go back to the village I know your mom were never proud of us as in-laws she is always treating me so bad she shouted at me couple of times (never happened) and she kept saying many other lies then she told him you can ask your wife.. I didn't know what to do and I don't know why even I got mad at Su that time and I agreed to my mom lies.
My husband called Su and said the meanest things I ever heard him saying to her (you also came from a village, if you forgot your roots you can visit your brothers in Egypt bla bla bla)
OMG I wrote tooooo much... short cut ((the drama kept evaluating))
since I guess 2020 Su never entered our home even her relationship with her son became sooooo bad because my mom kept saying more lies and honestly I also did say a lot and I cut my daughter off from that house I never felt guilt I never thought about god punishment till recently.
I got a call from Su she was crying she said I will never forgive you even after life I will ask god to take my revenge from you and your mother you destroyed my home and family and your mother is texting my husband what she wants from him, she told me I pray everyday to God that your daughter do to you the same as my son did to me.. she said many things I couldn't forget
Apparently my mom is texting my father in law and I have no idea what type of conversation they are having that made her swallow her pride and call me.. later on I got to know that she left the home and staying with her daughter.
I feel horrible, I suddenly realized how amazing this woman is.. the pain we caused to her.. honestly I am thinking of telling my Husband the truth but I am so scared of him I cant trust him also now.. He hurt his mother soooo easy what will he do with me.
I feel like I don't love or trust him anymore after he cut his mother off.. even if it was for me she is his mother.. he will do the same with me someday or another
and my mother I am so angry at her she destroyed the family and now she is going to destroy my life also if my husband get to know what is happening between her and his father and she did all of that because she is jealous of Su ... I know i am kind of answering myself but I caaaant sleep I want to tell the truth but for sure my life will be destroyed I will lose my husband AND my mother ... Plus I dont think Su will go back even after I say the truth .. I feel like they will not bother apologize to her at this point as well which will kill her
it is better for her and for everyone like this but I just feel so guilty .. please advise me everyone
I have toooo many things in my heart to say but i already wrote tooo much I need to talk with someone

2024.05.16 19:30 Illustrious_Leg1459 Long Term Sub to End of Year/ Year End Classroom Cleanup

I am long term subbing in middle school art (5-8th grade) art through the rest of the year because the current teacher had a baby. She has also decided to be a stay at home mom and is not coming back to teach. As part of my assignment I was tasked with end of the year cleanup of the room. I have been slowly cleaning and organizing everything in the room for next years new art teacher. The room is incredibly messy with random supplies in just about every drawer and cupboard. How much old art should I purge in an effort to clean up. I am taking this rather seriously because I personally would hate to take over in job where everything is a total mess. I have already taken several good examples of each art project and organized the few lesson plans I have found in different drawers (sometimes different parts of the lesson plan were in different drawers around the classroom!!) I have also handed back as much art as l could but there are entire drawers filled with art that was never handed back, most still in the class folder! What would you want if you were starting in a new classroom/school? Should I take off the posters from the wall and put them away so the new art teacher can make the room how they want? What do I do? Any advice is very appreciated.
As a side note I would like to say that I just graduated in January with a Physical Education/ Adapted PE/Health/Coaching/Outdoor Adventure degree. While I do quite a bit of art in my free time I don’t know what sort of environment is normal for a new teacher to step into.

2024.05.16 19:29 just_passing123 we meet again, 3 more manga that I forgot the name

the title, the first one is about a failing musician getting called by his parent to help in their izakaya he met with a middle schooleelementary schooler I can't remember they just bond together like normal person unlike that certain usagi manga, the mc have 2 love interest his ex girlfriend who still have feeling and highschooler helper at the izakaya.
the second is about a office worker girl that have some problem in her work place, she got traumatized and become a neet shut in, the manga have some comedy and serious tone overall oh and the girl have white hair
the third one tells a young woman whos running her own bar(idk sometimes its a bar and a cart) named "satelite" she pretty sleepy and good at making drinks but the story is about a girl that make drinks for some costumer and bond with her fellow bartender friend. you can think of it as foodwars but about drink instead and there is no sexual foodgasm.
edit: sorry to add more but I ask this one another time I will defintely forget, its about a school getting a new girl janitor, the student would occasionally get help from but since the janitor only a human she would help her best. this is explored in one of the chapter where one of the student getting groped and the janitor help her, the student in awe because she saw that the janitor hand also shaking with fear but the janitor still go in and save her

2024.05.16 19:00 cognitivedissidence_ Middle school teachers, what do you like about teaching this age? What are your struggles?

I'm considering taking a job as an ESOL teacher at a middle school in my public school district. This will be my first year teaching, although I've subbed occasionally in this particular school and nearby high schools. I'm waiting to hear back about my applications to ESOL positions at high schools as well.
I'm interested in hearing about the everyday life and struggles of middle school teachers. What keeps you coming back to this job and this age group? What are common issues that crop up?

2024.05.16 18:50 RishabJain12 How to do *real* science research this summer!

Imagine you're a student really interested in astrophysics. You've taken the hardest science and math classes your school offers, and you spend your free time reading about black holes and learning coding languages to analyze data from telescopes. You're passionate about the subject and want to do some real research in the field this summer.
But, when you go scrolling on a2c looking for advice, you stumble upon dozens of posts about how science research for high schoolers is only possible if you have connections or have parents working in research. You start to feel discouraged and wonder if it's even worth pursuing.
Well, I'm here to tell you that it is absolutely possible to do science research this summer, even without connections or parents in the field. When I was in high school, I did research every summer, and I found it to be the most rewarding and exciting experience. Many of the skills I learned transfer over to my college courses—more so than olympiads or bowls (which I was not super active in, but did briefly)—and, for all you college application enthusiasts out there, it's a great resume booster.
Here's a brief overview of what my summers looked like: Summer after 8th grade: worked on an independent research project in computational pathology, later presented at Broadcom MASTERS and qualified to ISEF my freshman year Summer after 9th grade (COVID): worked on an independent research project in synthetic biology, won me 3rd Grand Award at ISEF in Bioengineering Summer after 10th grade: continued my independent project from the year before, this summer working under a mentor (project later won 1st place at ISEF), and also worked at my local lab simultaneously (was 3rd and 5th author on two research papers) Summer after 11th grade: Attended the Research Science Institute (RSI) program at MIT Summer after 12th grade: Joined a new lab at Harvard (where I go to school now)
If you have no idea what any of these things mean, don't worry! I'll break it down for you.
  1. Independent research projects: These are projects that you design and carry out on your own, without a mentor. This is a great way to explore your interests and develop your critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I've found that I was able to rapidly develop my skills in coding and data analysis from independent projects. It is really hard to find mentors/join a lab at a young age, so this is the route I recommend for younger students.
  2. Mentored research projects: Once you've developed some skills and can demonstrate that you're capable of conducting some aspects of research, you can start looking for mentors or reaching out to labs. This can be intimidating, but there are many resources and tips online on how to do this effectively. The strategy that I used was cold emailing. Many students will email a few professors, but then give up if they don't get a response. Persistence is key! I've heard from friends and other students who emailed upwards of 100 experts before they scored a position! Also - please remember, as a high school student, you are not entitled to or owed a research position. Be professional and respectful in your emails and understand that labs have limited space and resources. Oftentimes, labs will want to get undergrads or grad students from their own institution (especially schools like Harvard, MIT, Stanford, etc.) so consider emailing labs at smaller schools or schools in your area. This will often lead to a more rewarding experience as you can continue working during the school year and visit in person if you are doing wet lab work. Also, don't be afraid to reach out to labs in different fields or disciplines. You never know what kind of interesting research you might end up doing! When we're young (heck, I'm still young as just a rising sophomore in college), our research interests are very malleable. You might think you love astro, but end up totally obsessed with comp bio. Keep an open mind and be eager to learn!
  3. Summer programs: There are many amazing summer programs out there that offer high school students the opportunity to conduct research under the guidance of experienced mentors. However, beware! Some programs may be expensive and not credible. I would recommend sticking to programs that have a formal affiliation with an institution, especially residential programs where you are bound to be in-person. Some online programs will say that you will get 2 credits from a school, but this doesn't mean that the program is formally conducted AT or WITH that university. The program I did, Research Science Institute, is a great one. There are others such as SSP, Clark Scholars, Garcia, and more which you can find online. However, you are bound to encounter some fishy programs as well, so just stay vigilant!
Note that many of these programs are extremely competitive, so doing independent research first or as a back-up is a great option!
  1. Competitions: You may have been confused when I tossed around the "ISEF" and "Broadcom MASTERS" acronyms earlier on. These are science competitions where you can present your research projects and compete with students from all over the world. These competitions are a great way to showcase your work and get feedback from experts in the field. Since this is a college application forum, I should mention -- these also look great on college applications and can open doors to other opportunities. ISEF genuinely changed my life, and it was one of the fondest experiences I have from high school. Getting a trip with friends is also a lot of fun :) Look up science research competitions in your area and see which ones you are eligible for.
Now, inevitably, there are probably a ton of you that have no idea what you should start with/do! I'll first start by saying, the best way to learn how to do science research is to just do it :) You can read all of these posts and guides online, but at the end of the day, the best way to learn and improve is by actually conducting research. You will make mistakes, but that's part of the process!
Here are some things that I did to start out:
  1. Make a notebook and start reading news in an area you are interested in, every day. If you don't know what area you are interested in, pick one randomly to start with. Make notes in your notebook and record questions you have. As you come up with questions, you will find yourself leaning towards certain ones over others: i.e. you might be really intrigued to find the answer to "how do we know the Milky Way's Mass?" as opposed to "why does water spin clockwise"
  2. You may have noticed that these questions are extremely broad. This is GOOD! As you get deeper and deeper, you will ask more complex questions, i.e. "Why are there varying numbers of synonymous codons in different species genomes?"
  3. At a certain point, the hope is that you stumble upon a question that no one knows the answer to/the answer you stumble upon isn't ideal. This is your first idea for a project! My very first science project was on why certain liquids produce more gases than others. I thought chemistry would be my favorite around 6th grade, then later got more interested in biology after some amazing teachers in middle school, before getting specifically interested in synthetic biology and computational biology in early high school, until I went to summer camp before senior year and totally switched into Neuroscience! Today, I'm doing computational neuro work, but am sure my interests might continue to change a little.
  4. Once you have a good list of questions, start exploring them - this is the beginning of your independent project! There will be many that you can't do because of limited resources or access, but hopefully you will find some that you can do from home! The internet and computers are amazing tools (can be used for modeling, simulations, etc.) and power a ton of student-run projects. This is why you see machine learning super commonplace in student research nowadays.
On online forums, you will unfortunately find a lot of negativity around science research, ISEF, publishing papers etc. as students. This is because there are situations where students get assisted by parents/connections and technically compete on a biased playing field. But notice that my post DOES NOT mention anything about parents or connections - science research as a high schooler doesn't have to be this! To those of you who don't have connections, etc. but want to do research - please know that YOU CAN DO IT!
Also, as a concluding note, please remember - there are a ton of other ways to explore your interest in STEM besides doing research. I personally did research so I love suggesting it, but remember that there are olympiads, bowls, robotics, science clubs, hackathons, and more.

2024.05.16 18:22 GaiaLex AITJ for saying my Dad knows nothing about romance?

For 23 years my household was home to a very violent, loud and unfaithful marriage. The only thing that kept that marriage together was that being miserable together was better than leaving the kids with one parent.
My older sister, younger brother and I were disillusioned back in elementary when a strange woman began to talk to us about being our new mother and her relationship to our Dad. Having the cops called on her revealed our Dad's affair but nothing came of it. As the years passed our Dad only had more affairs and when our Mom found out she went violently crazy.
All throughout this trainwreck me and my siblings relied on each other to grow our morals and understand what not to do from our parents. The only good that came from this is my brother having a happy & healthy relationship for 4 years that is now going to turn into an engagement.
Back to my dilemma. About 2 months ago after my siblings and I moved into our own apartment my parents finally got their divorce. Our Mom moved out of state for a better life and our Dad was a mess for a month. We did our best to help him through and introduced him to groups to help him build a friend group. Well a month ago he met a party girl at a bar and is obsessed like a middle schooler. I asked my siblings what we thought and all of us agreed we were pretty much indifferent. That was until our Dad started to make it weird.
For a month he's been bringing her over to our home, stinking the entire place up with smoke, asking us to come along to the bars and go for drinks since we're all adults. None of us drink or smoke since we don't enjoy drinking and get headaches from the smoke. He leaves her at our home so he can go to work, and gets mad at us when we ask her to leave. Whenever we talk on the phone he talks about this is real romance and that we should learn from this relationship instead of our parents relationship. And when I popped in to check on our Dad I saw them both bloody on the ground since they had just crashed her car because they both were too drunk to drive but did so anyway.
I've had my doubts about their relationship but I've tried to remain neutral, but when I found out my Dad has been kidnapping my cats during the day to 'win me over' I lost all my patience.
He came over to make a speech of how he just wants to be happy and move on from our mom, that accepting his girlfriend as family is the only thing he wants and to know he has our support.
All my frustrations came gushing out as I yelled something along the lines of "Don't make it sound like you're such the victim of that marriage! How dumb do you think we are? Don't act like you can be this great Dad doing us a service by dating someone again. You are a pathetic person that can't go a couple of days without clinging to the first person who glances your way, regardless of your relationship or martial status. How about your relationship is your relationship and you leave us out of it because holy crap we don't want to be apart of another one of your failing relationships."
Shoving him out and looking back I regret now everything I said, even my siblings are concern that he might try cutting us out of his life because of the way I said everything. I still believe that the message needed to somehow get through to him but I don't think this was the right method. I don't know what I should be doing or if I can fix this at all.

2024.05.16 18:16 throwawaybread9654 Teacher gift for an exceptional person

Hi teachers, I have a question. My daughter has had a relationship with her gifted teacher for 8 years. She was diagnosed gifted in kindergarten, skipped a grade, and has had just soooo many struggles over the years. She had this amazing teacher that she would meet with for the gifted program in elementary school, which was a pull-out program. This woman nurtured my child, bonded with her, and tolerated some absolutely wild behavior while we worked to get her adhd under control.
The same year that my daughter moved to middle school, this teacher also moved to the same middle school. So my daughter got to continue having her for her gifted classes which in middle school is a dedicated once a day class. She's been having her lunches in her classroom too, this year.
This teacher has made such a huge impact on my child's life. She's literally been teaching her since she was 5, and now she's 13 and headed to high school next year. I'm at a total loss for how to acknowledge the huge role this woman has had in my daughter's life. Can anyone offer me some ideas? I don't have much money unfortunately, but if I did I'd give it all to her. Seriously, she's the most amazing woman and I cannot adequately express how much she's meant to us.

2024.05.16 18:11 Otherwise_Comb_4704 How to reply to codependent mother

I'm not sure why I even continue to maintain ties with my family. Even though I'm miles away, their texts are v triggering and I want to block all of them temporarily.
I'm already middle aged and my covert narc/codependent mother still insists that I stay in touch/share location while travelling. I see it as a form of control because she cannot soothe her own anxiety. Meanwhile, I'm out here trying my best to heal and rebuild my own life.
What's a good message to reply back to her. I need to teach her and set some boundaries.

2024.05.16 18:11 harinedzumi_art Black-eyed foxes and the Nha-Dai Kingdom.

Black-eyed foxes and the Nha-Dai Kingdom.
"Every time I'm told that freedom is only a shaky illusion, I look to the southeast and remember Two Rivers. I was there and saw freedom with my own eyes. It wasn't an illusion. And I exercise my mind every day so as not to forget about the price of this freedom."
© Yo Chgung, military commander of the Middle Empire, leader of the Great Newt Rebellion and one of the founders of the Swampland [17th century aTwbW]
The history of the Nha-Dai Kingdom is a sad example of the fate of small independent states in the Small World. On the other hand, it is an examplary story of relentless struggle for freedom.
It is believed that the nation of black-eyed foxes settled in the Valley of the Black [Nha] and Yellow [Dai] Rivers about 300-400 aTwbW. Around the same time, Nha-Dai Kingdom was founded. For that time, the culture and humanities of the black-eyed foxes were incredibly developed, and the Kingdom was famous for its economy and the citizen's rights.
The peaceful Solar Cult [full name is the Teaching of Ten Thousand Solar Spirits] and its priesthood became the basis of royal power. At the same time, the Cult severely limited the power of the King. In fact, the Circle of Priestesses had the same power. Therefore, the Kingdom did not wage wars of conquest, focusing instead on trade and the development of the state. Soon, peaceful and virtuous, black-eyed foxes have become a fraternal nation for many and many inhabitants of the East of the Small World.
Over the next millennia, there was a commercial and cultural expansion of Nha-Dai throughout the East of the Small World. This served as a reliable protection for a small state: the goods of the black-eyed foxes were irreplaceable, and their production technologies were unknown outside of Nha-Dai. To seize the Nha-Dai meant to deprive ourselves not only of many familiar types of food, but also of fabrics, paints, medicines, luxury items. Only a mad living being would do such a thing...
Alas, in the 17th century aTwbW this is exactly what happened. The Cult of the Dead God created by Mo'Gu lizards seized power in the Southern Deserts. The Jamvapitkacha Sultanate [neighboring state] was destroyed and the Iron Caliphate was founded. The Nha-Dai Kingdom supported the Sultanate and even provided military assistance during the Cult's uprising. Therefore, the Nha-Dai were the first to be looked at by the Mo'Gu. Mo'Gu were not interested in economics, culture, or medicine. Millions of slaves captured during the uprising covered all their primitive needs. But they were extremely interested in the expansion and spread of the Cult of the Dead God.
Without any problems [the lizard society has always been extremely militarized], having assembled a 700,000-strong army, the Iron Caliphate attacked the Nha-Dai without declaring war. The capital [the Sun City] was captured in the first week of the invasion. It seemed that there was no hope. But the Nha-Dai did not capitulate. Burning their own towns and villages to ashes, the black-eyed foxes retreated into the jungles and river backwaters, from where they waged a guerrilla war against the invaders.
Soon the Middle Empire entered the war unofficially. Newt military commanders and soldiers left the service by the thousands and came to the Valley of the Black and Yellow Rivers. After them, refugees from the Caliphate also flocked there. The Neko Shogunate began to supply a huge amount of weapons and food from the northwest to Nha-Dai. The Shogunate's assault squads [recruited from cats and rats] also played a significant role in the war.
After seven battles in the Ngachenh and Minkhphu valleys, which ended in victory for the black-eyed foxes and their allies, it became obvious that the Mo'Gu would not be able to control the Valley of the Black and Yellow Rivers. Then the first of many treaties on the relations between the Nha-Dai Kingdom and the Iron Caliphate was signed. The Kingdom was recognized as a formal vassal of the Caliphate, but the Caliphate had no right to spread the Cult of a Dead God there. This treaty did not suit any of the parties. Therefore, over the next 2 thousand years there were 56 more wars between the Nha-Dai Kingdom and the Iron Caliphate. Even during the Great War, these 2 states did not stop fighting.
Alas, after the Great War, the annexation of the Neko Shogunate by the Ake Mountain Tenure and the 2nd war between the Middle Empire and the Swampland, the military support of the Nha-Dai came to naught. With the support of the volunteers of the Swampland and the Island Empire [a new state founded by the royal family members of the Jamvapitkacha Sultanate], Nha-Dai escaped direct occupation, but fell into real vassal dependence on the Caliphate.
This situation continues now. The children of the royal family are held hostage in the Iron Caliphate, and the representatives of the Iron City Council rule the Nha-Dai Kingdom. At the same time, the Nha-Dai did not submit at all, and the constant guerrilla war, led by the Circle of Priestesses, continues even now. The black-eyed foxes are joined by a huge number of newts and rats fleeing from the Swampland and Neko Shogunate. And the Island Council has significantly increased military support for the Nha-Dai over the past 10 years. Rumor has it that the reason for this is the flight of the Crown Prince from the Caliphate and his participation in the war. It is said that the Prince has already negotiated with the rebels of the Great Swamp U Chagh [the Swampland] and the Northern Mountains of the Caliphate, and they will soon enter the war. The Island Empire is only waiting for confirmation of this, and its Landing Corps are in full readiness. If this is indeed the case, soon more than 500,000 soldiers and commanders will arrive in Nha-Dai to repeat the exploits of their ancestors and help the fraternal black-eyed fox nation to get free from tyranny.
"...why I gonna to Nha-Dai?.. Ya know, brother, I've been to a lot of places, right? Yeah, I've done business with many, I'm a fucking business-newt, like ya, ya know? And ya know what? Nowhere and never have I been treated like in Nha-Dai. No one there called me fucking tailed frog. They treated me with respect! They treat every fucking one with respect, brother. And I don't wanna the Mo'Gu filthy scum to just slaught these guys like cattle. They need to face me first. Ya know, I have so many gifts for them and their fucking god [leans on crates of explosive shells] Yeah, let's see what they do when we got there... Nice deal for ya too btw, their healers need ya goods. I convinced ya, brother, right? Yeah, I see it..."
© Chu-wyo Gyochwu-gukh, the newt warlord of the Free Trade Commonwealth [Free Newt's Great Gang] From his conversation with Tsu-wagh Gokhugkh, the leader of the Thousand-Livered Teacher [another Great Gang] Both Gang's troops were later seen on the territory of the Nha-Dai Kingdom.

2024.05.16 17:55 mrbobbilly2 Is WGU a good option for people just starting their career?

tldr; I know I can probably finish WGU in less than a year based on the CLEP and Sofia exams and if my university's and associates credits will transfer, but would WGU be helpful for someone like me whos just starting their career, because it seems like the vast majority of people enrolled are already knees deep in their career and are just doing WGU in order to move up to a new position. I haven't found any posts related to people trying to get their first real job, all of the posts are from people who already made it into their careers and are doing WGU to get promoted into a better role. So is WGU's positive outcomes mainly for people who already have professional work experience? What about people who are just starting their career? I couldn't find anything from those people
My main concern is how helpful would WGU be (like their career services and student support) if I'm applying to entry level tech jobs just starting my career, or would I be better off finding a different way to get into tech like continuing to make personal coding projects to maybe make a business out of them/applying to WITCH company contractors like Accenture? (problem with WITCH companies is they also require a bachelors degree now)
I completed a coding bootcamp in 2022 and I'm actively working on a few portfolio projects but it seems like having a bachelors degree is a bare minimum to be taken seriously by employers nowadays and projects are just for talking points in interviews to show you have the skills for the job to keep the conversation with the interviewer going for more than 10 minutes (if you're lucky to have an interviewer who understands coding projects even)
Long Story:
I'm in a tough spot. My current school I'm attending is called Grand Valley State University but I'm not having a good time because of their traditional 4 month semester like you have to be on pace with everyone else, I rather just get assignments done quicker or if I want to slow down and truly understand the material but if you were to ask to do that at my school they would imply you're being inconsiderate and rude...
My school posted their stats on their demographics proving my suspicions, the non traditional above 22 year old students here are in the single digit percentage here. I'm a non traditional student, meaning I'm not my state university's usual student who just graduated high school and are under 22, I'm 25 I been out of college since 2021 I just recently came back last year, there's nothing I can relate to these kids and it feels awkward being around 18 year olds when I look like their age but if they were to somehow find out my actual age that would be even more awkward. There's that saying "you don't want to be the 25 year old whos still in school with kids".
I just don't fit in with their traditional teaching model, I excelled at online learning but it seems like my local schools in general are doing away with online based learning and going back to a sit in a classroom setting because they're apparently paranoid with rampant cheating with ChatGPT and stuff so much that they're making everyone required to be in class and do everything on paper now. The only strength my school really has for me is the local connection to internships, that's pretty much it... All my friends graduated in 2021 so the socialization attraction of college left 3 years ago
The school is a 50 minute daily drive which is horrible, they do not offer convenient online classes, it's your typical brick and mortar sit in a classroom and listen to the lecture type school which has never worked out for me since like middle school. Then there are those professors who do flipped-classrooms where the professor does not teach, you and your classmates are teaching each other which is a horrible experience like how do you expect students to teach people stuff they don't know about and you get mad at us for teaching it the wrong way
My school also does not offer semester-round for certain classes, so theres certain mandatory classes you have to take but it's only offered once a year like only in the Fall or Winter of that year, no other semester offered, so if you miss out on that specific class at that very specific semester or if it becomes full and no one drops so you can't enroll, you'll have no way to take those classes, better luck next year. They expect to have 25k students enrolled this year (half of that will be in CS/IT/Data Science) when they do not have enough professors, resources and local internships to handle all of that, it's a small ass university in the middle of farms.
This caused my graduation timeline to actually be late 2026 or ealy 2027 and there's no way in hell I want to wait that long, I rather graduate as soon as possible and get to the money now instead of having to wait like almost 4 years to start my life.
I graduated from an online community college with a business technology management associates of science in 2021 but there's a major problem with my state university, I have 82 credits and they classified me as a Junior but I'm basically a freshman because all of those credits are free electives, my credits basically weren't accepted because they're from out of state even though they're all business/CS related. Annoying the registration department of my school didn't help, they were very firm on holding their "standards" claiming my community college credits aren't rigerous enough for the school how Ohio and Michigan has different standards...
Ohio colleges and unis are not compliant with Michigan transfer guidelines or something is pretty much what she said. Ohio schools are starting to do competency based learning, but Michigan is extremely hesitant in adapting, they're insistent on staying traditional "because we have different standards"
I couldn't find a course transfer equivelancy page on WGU's website to show what specific classes will transfer from certain universities, does anyone have information about what credits can transfer without having to call WGU? (I don't want to get spam called by them) I've been spam called by SNHU from different people when I requested to see what credits might transfer. The wild thing is I checked my university's transfer equivelancy and they don't accept any CS credits from WGU, only basic business classes but as free electives mostly: GVSU Course Equivalencies

2024.05.16 17:50 No_Shirt2198 23 [M4F] Austin, TX/Online - Looking for a down to earth connection

Hello, I graduated college a year ago, moved to Austin, and started a job. I'm a bit of a homebody, finding comfort in the coziness of my own space. I'm seeking a genuine connection with the right woman that shares my interests and appreciates me.
Who I am:
I'm a 6ft, average build, mild-mannered guy with a good sense of humor. My main hobby is PC gaming. I am a competitive person and I enjoy games like League of Legends and Escape from Tarkov. I also would love to find someone I can play co-op games with as well, like Stardew Valley or Minecraft.
I really enjoy watching YouTube, tv shows, and movies. I mostly watch thought-provoking video essays or gameplay videos. Some tv shows I'm interested in and looking forward to watching are Survivor, House of the Dragon (S2), Severance (S2), The Acolyte. I'm also always down to watch a random episode of Parks and Rec or The Office.
I have a creative side and I like making goofy memes for my friends about inside jokes or just funny stuff I think of. I've been doing origami off and on since middle school and it's fun from time to time. I'm also into building models and I have a friend that's teaching me to paint miniatures as well.
Who you are:
I'm searching for someone that is 21-25 years old, close to finishing college or already in a career, and shares my mindset and some of my interests. I would like you to be confident and content with yourself and a good communicator. Honestly, just be true to yourself and be able to hold a conversation and have interests of your own.
Some thoughts:
I am all about good. meaningful communication. I'm looking for someone that is willing to put in the effort to form a real bond. I believe relationships are a two-way street and both partners have to give and take equal amounts.
I would prefer to text and voice chat on discord. After our introductions, I'd like to exchange pictures so that we both have a clear idea of each other's appearance. If you made it through my post and are interested in getting to know me then please shoot me a message.

Bio:
Born in the year 4BC, Tessario was the son of a Lyseni courtesan and a nobleman of the Old Blood who had left for the Black Walls of Volantis before he even knew of the child.
Growing up in Lys, Tessario was raised by his mother in a small manse where she would teach him lessons learnt from the courts of the free city.
Since his mother first spoke to him tales of Valyria and dragon riders, Tessario was enthralled.
His bloodline was of the forty families, from one of the few dragonlords on Lys during the 'Night of Tears', when the dragonlords had been poisoned and their dragons slain by their very hosts - the magisters. That the dragon rider had been his ancestor was his family's deepest secret and one that could have seen them killed in generations past.
The knowledge that the dragon riders of old were his very ancestors was almost too much for the young boy to keep secret. Especially now, when dragons had waged conquest on Westeros' shores so recently. But while the Targaryen's were said to wed brother to sister to keep their bond with the dragons strong, his family had not had a dragon rider in five generations. Since then his family's bloodline - the house of Altaerys, thought lost in the Doom of Valyria and the Century of Blood since, had become clouded with the Old Blood of Volantis during their occupation of Lys. And before that, diluted among the courts of Lys the Lovely, where none truly knew or at least none spoke of how much dragon blood they had. It was clear most of Lys had some. The features of silver-blond or white hair and the eyes of pale blue or shades of purple were all too common. The city was truly Valyrian. Who knew how many dragonlords' legacies his blood carried now?
Tessario, with his pure Valyrian blood and features to match, had the fiery will of his ancestors but an uncommonly pragmatic mind. As he grew, so did his keen mind, picking up his numbers and letters faster than other boys his age.
Raised in the turbulence of a city still reeling from the uprising against Volantis, Tessario learnt how violent people could be at a young age. Surrounded by the cruelties of slavery, he grew up numbed to the hardships of others.
By nine name-days he would begin visiting the Temple of Trade where he and other boys would talk with the magisters and tradesmen who congregated there. From among these wealthy and noble men of the city, he and a lucky few others, would gain apprenticeships; a position that was highly coveted in the city of Lys, where trade was considered a profession more honorable than arms.
Tessario shadowed his sponsor for three years, learning the inner workings of trade negotiations, currency exchange, and contract creation. He met several other apprentices who like him hungered for more, as well as making friends among the less prominent families of Lys all too keen to climb the social ladder. So, when his apprenticeship was over they formed a merchantile group of ambitious youths. Tessario and the others began with insurance cons and profitable arbitrage that filled their pockets and funded bigger schemes.
The war in the Stepstones came as a wondrous opportunity for the newly founded group. The members invested heavily, with some overseeing the battles themselves. Luckily the Lysene forces met up with not only those of Tyrosh, but also ships from Dorne and the Stormlands. Tessario wore armour for the first time as he sailed sellswords to the fighting, though did no more than watch in actuality. War made them rich and for the first time in his life Tessario knew what it was to wield true power. The power to make others die for your ends.
The pirate threat crumbled easily, but the true prizes were had after the fighting. Contracts for trade opened up and new ports to invest in saw the merchantile group grow faster than ever before. They hired lingering hedge knights and sellswords to protect their assets and even convinced some of the former pirate vessels to become corsairs under them.
As the Stepstones begin to flourish, the group started to look further afield for other trade routes. In 18AC, just as Dorne began to invest heavily in Sunstone, Tessario sailed to Driftmark as one of three emissaries of their group tasked with finding new avenues for profit. It was while on this mission that Tessario first met Valarr Velaryon, Lord of the Tides. Seeking a base of operations outside of Lys, Tessario negotiated plans for a bank to be built in Spicetown, profiting from the flow of trade.
Tessario broached the concept to the group telling them of the pearls found by fishermen in the pools of the island's coves and a contract for the Pearl Bank was drawn up. Tessario, as one of the two-and-twenty key holders, was now responsible for much.
Construction began in late 19AC with a main building that was reinforced with strong stone and deep vaults. Pearl farms under the control of the bank were also created, with construction of the entire project finishing before the end of 24AC. During this time the bank engaged in numerous amounts of trade, amassing a full vault, as well as funding loans to the many growing businesses of Spicetown, merchants of the free cities, and other Houses of Westeros. This includes House Massey of Stonedance, House Celtigar of Claw Isle, and many other minor houses.

Which Four Major Crews Came First: Big Deal or Workers?
Good day everyone. I am currently undergoing an attempt to recreate a PTJ Universe Timeline, but I am currently stuck on one that could be a plot error:
Which Four Major Crews Came First?
The contenders for the title were left to two of the crews, Big Deal and Workers. During the Big Deal Arc, Gun and Goo came to Gangseo to find a suitable crew for the area and caught their eyes on Big Deal, which led them to give the gang a month to gather 100 million won, which they succeeded in thanks to Samuel's plan.
In Episode 310, it was only after Gun and Goo got Big Deal under their wing that Goo returned to Charles Choi's residence to find Eugene presented his business plan to Charles and chose his crew's name to be 'Workers.'

According to the narrative, this should mean that Big Deal was the first Four Major Crews to be called one a month before Workers came to be under Eugene's.
However, the contradiction of this timeline came from the reveal in 3A Arc that Club Vivi is the provider for Pungsan Cult's drugs that led Johan's mother to ruin.

While an ingenious way to tie in a character's backstory with the current conflict, the issue becomes prominent when we look back to Episode 306. The episode concerned the in-between months before Gun and Goo came knocking down the Big Deal Street, where the then middle schooler Jerry was walking under the rain, reading the news about the recently unfolded Pungsan Cult Incident

…he found a weakened Johan lying on the street and decided to take him in.

This series of events affirmed that the Pungsan Cult Arc happened at least a month before Gun and Goo came to recruit Big Deal, and thus, before Workers even came to get its namesake. How does the cult get the drugs from Club Vivi in the first place, if Vivi herself hadn't been recruited along with Mitsuki to be the president of yet-to-be established 2nd and 3rd Affiliates? Who the heck knows. Perhaps she had the Club long before Eugene convinced her to join him? Or is this just the case of PTJ retconning again? What do you guys think?
