2024.05.15 02:52 cooleric Patagonia trip logistics questions

Hi y'all, I am planning a visit to Patagonia over the holidays and am trying to figure out some of the logistics. I'm hoping to do the W trek and then spend some time in either Santiago or Buenos Aires (more on that below). I would love any help with these questions!
  1. I've seen talk about direct flights from Santiago to Puerto Natales but haven't been able to find those flights - where/when will those be posted?
  2. If I end up flying into Puerto Natales, is Punta Arenas (and Magdalena Island) worth the side trip?
  3. After the trek, should I spend some time (~5 days, including New Years Eve) in Santiago or Buenos Aires? If Buenos Aires, what is the best way to get there from Puerto Natales/Punta Arenas?
Feel free to give me any other suggestions or tips as well! Thanks in advance!

2024.05.15 02:36 majoroofboys A Guide on What to Do At College if You Want To Succeed

Introduction

There was a post that was recently posted and it's been asked a ton: "How do I get a computer science related job after I graduate from KSU?". I thought I'd share this with everyone because I've been down this path and managed to make it on the other side. This will be a long explanation and hopefully, can serve as some sort of guide for students. That being said, things are subjective and this is not the holy grail of how to make it. You might find all, some or none of it useful. I encourage testimonials and whatnot in the comments. Can be applied to all majors but, this primary for technology-based majors since I am in tech field. YMMV

About Me

I've been around here for a while. I was a student not too long ago, studied computer science for my bachelors. After graduating, I work in FAANG and have worked in big tech for a while. No, I don't work at Amazon. I am a senior software engineer. I touch frontend & backend technologies. I participate in hiring frequently.

Starting Out

Over the years and while attending here, there's been a weird disconnect between students, goals and how to achieve them in tech. Goals can be anywhere from learning new technologies, getting internships to securing a full time job before or after you graduate. As much as I would love for there to be a path where you can do minimum effort and still succeed, there isn't. A lot of you seem to not realize that. Getting a degree in this field is not enough. Doing projects that show no passion / interests is not enough. Being stuck on tutorials for years is not enough.
This field is much like a sport. There are very few people that can just be great without any effort. You have to be consistent. Four years is not a lot of time. It goes by super fast. If you constantly push things back and you do not take the time to learn the fundamentals outside the classroom, you will not succeed in this field. This field is at a point where there's so many of you. Every post on LinkedIn and news articles said "hey, this field is a gold mine and you'll make six figures out the gate". For a time, maybe that was somewhat true. As of writing this, it's not. You're going against people who have: better schools, better experience, etc. You have to find a way to diversify yourself early. If you can't diversify, you're going to be in a tough place later down the road. Knowledge not something you can just consume in less than an hour and pass an interview. You have to know it well. If you don't, there's someone else who will.
There's an interesting connotation in life that you're either born super smart or an absolute idiot and that you have to be smart to do computer science / programming. There are people with raw IQ that can consume things like no one you've ever met but, that's such a rarity that there's no realistic use in using that as a data point. If you ever took the time to ask someone who you thought was really good at something, they would tell you something along the lines of: I love what I do and I spent a lot of time doing this. There are hours and hours of time people put into passions that you don't / will never see. Meaning that they can no-life this shit for days on end and still come back and do it some more. It doesn't mean that you can't succeed if don't do that but, computing / programming is a very boring field if you do not enjoy it. I would seriously contemplate why you're doing through this. If you're doing it for money and only money, you're going to end up miserable. No amount of money can make you do something you hate. It'll wear you down both mentally and physically. If you're doing this because it's a mix of passion and money, you're like everyone else and you gave yourself a better shot. It's a mental thing. Don't climb uphill if you rather sit at the bottom. There's nothing wrong with that. But, don't do it. For what it's worth, I am not the smartest person. I graduated high school with a low GPA and took college seriously because I wanted to do more with my life. Plus, being on hourly forever sounds horrible imo.
Additionally, college is what you make of it. Blaming professors or the program (while I do agree sometimes) is not great. Blaming professors that don't speak English is a cop out. If you work in tech, you'll be interacting with a lot of people from other countries. Professors and TAs can only teach you so much. Classes are meant to give you a taste of what it's like in that domain / space. It's not meant to fix all your issues and show you the way. That's for you to do on your own time. Take accountability of your own success, explore the internet (it's free) and lock in. Stop looking for opportunities to find you. Actively seek them out yourself.

Networking

Make connections with people. I cannot stress how important this is. Especially on the Marietta campus, there's a lot of you that go to class, stingers / food, run to class and immediately start gaming and think that when your classes are over, you're done for the day. That's such a bad mindset. Make connections with people. A lot of people say "there's nothing to do at KSU and there's no life on campus". That's not true. Join a club that interests you. Get close to the people in that club who actively attend and build a personal relationship. If there's no club with your interest, make a club. You can make one officially through KSU or add a discord server to the student hub and go from there. You'll meet some really cool people. Lots of my connections have come from randomly showing up to a club, getting out of my comfort zone and weirdly enjoying it.

Interviewing

Brush up on your interview skills. Technical and behavioral abilities matter. Culture fit matters. A lot of you seem to walk around with almost zero personal hygiene. Clean yourself up, practice talking to people and get places. There's been this stigma that culture fit doesn't matter as much as technical and if I have great technical abilities, they'll just accept me. I can tell you for an absolutely fact that I have thrown out / tossed out resumes from highly technical individuals that had zero people skills. If you can't communicate and clean up, you're more of a risk than someone who does all those things and has a bit less technical ability. Know more than just leetcode. Learn system design. Take a course / watch a video on Linux and bash. Do not be afraid of the command line interface. Take feedback seriously. Do not argue with people. If you future manager / colleague tells you that you need to work on things, work on those things. There's nothing worth than a co-worker in denial.

Jobs

As for internships and full time opportunities, there's a few classes at KSU that you really want to master: Data structures, Algorithm Analysis, Operating Systems and Discrete math. If you're in a major that doesn't have those classes, spend the extra money and take those classes. Do not take them online if you can afford to come in person. Take the hardest / best professors for those courses. Super important. Leetcode is quite literally, those two classes merged together in a prompt-style format. If you do not understand those concepts, you will not make it in this field.
Data Structures - Varies. Rate my professor.
Algorithm Analysis - Varies. Rate my professor.
Operating Systems - Do not take Carla McManus if you want to learn the concepts fluently.
Discrete Math - Andy Wilson.
Having solid resume is super important. Many people who don't secure things and get automatically rejected, etc have horrible resumes. Spend the money to get your resume professionally written. Templates are cool but, they don't convey information well. Don't put every achievement ever on there. The rule of "only one page" is complete and total bullshit. If you have projects and prior work experience related to the role, list it down. Don't conserve space for the sake of keeping it one page. I know the career center actively tells people on handshake to keep it to one page. They're wrong. I landed internships consistently at big tech / FAANG for years with a 1.5 / 2 page resume. Do not lie on your resume. If you can't solve a leetcode hard consistently with the technology / language of choice, you don't know it well enough. I have interviewed a ton of students that list they know C or Python and can't write recursion or gives me a solution in O(N^2) or worse. Aim for O(N), use a hashmap / hash table when you can and do it in a language that doesn't make you fight the runtime / compiler. Trust me, we know when you're making shit up. If you don't know something say it and then, tell them to explain more. This way, you show that you have the capability to learn. Ask smart questions. Do not ask questions that have already been answered. Take notes.
On your resume, experience is only real experience if you get a W2. If you don't get a W2, you can't claim it as professional experience. A lot of background checks these days are drilling down on incorrect information. I have seen instances where people lie, get an offer, company finds out through a comprehensive background check and their offer is gone. Do not put the fate of your future income on a lie. I cannot stress this enough. A lot of students actively lie.
Secondly, the trick to getting a good internship is timing. A lot of you want until Nov - Dec to find an internship and then, throw your hands up when no one responds. That's not a good mindset. Solid internships are recruiting in end of July to August. By September, the amount of open spots are extremely thin. Local companies tend to look for internships during this time. Internships are about luck after that. Reach out to people in your circle to increase your odds. A referral goes a long way. Prior experience through projects that are complex and unique go a long way. It's a numbers game. Don't aim for the highest thing ever without some sort of referral. You can still apply but, do not expect much from it. Start small and work your way up. It's extremely rare to go from KSU undergrad sophomore to Google. It takes a lot of outside work. If you happen to land the internship, make sure that you get recommendations at the end. Having real people who you worked with in a professional capacity that can vouch for you is huge. If you're in your junior year and you get an internship, make sure you try to secure a full time offer. Loop in your boss, mentor, etc. Make your expectations clear. Reach their expectations and beyond.
Thirdly, full time opportunities are rare and most new grads that get hire come from the previous year's intern pool. If you don't get converted, you have to make up that time searching for a job during your senior year. If you do get converted, keep looking because companies are flaky these days. Always have a Plan B & C. Never fully count on Plan A. If you don't have internships across four years, it's over for you. From a hiring manager perspective, it's an absolute red flag when we come across someone with a degree and no internships. That's effectively going against the point of college. You'll have to settle for crumbs and crawl your way up. Very few make it out of that hole. Especially, now.

Searching for an Opportunity

Do not wait until after you graduate to find a job. Jan - Early May are when most companies finalize budgets and hire. If you wait until after May, you'll have to wait until after the Summer and possibly, October for hiring to pick up again. Proactivity is nothing but good for you. If you can't be proactive then, you won't succeed in this field. Referrals matter but, personal connections with the hiring manager / recruiter are much, much better. Work your way up. Don't discount an opportunity because it doesn't pay well. Get as much experience as you can and bounce around. Do not go into the gate thinking you're going to make $120K - $140K / yr out the gate. You're most-likely going to make $68K - $75K / yr depending on the location. Do not listen to LinkedIn posts that claim all this cool shit and how to do it. Trust me, it's bullshit. Don't pay attention to it. It's a brag-fest. It's a long road. Start walking on it early and you'll reach the other side when it matters most.
The reality of this economy is that highly experience people have been laid off. Those people are applying to entry level roles and those roles are being filled for cheap. In addition, watch out for fake postings and scam jobs. If you take a contract job, always keep looking. Avoid jobs that will providing "training" before you even start. Avoid jobs that are less than week old. You want things that are fresh. It's a numbers game. Apply for 300+ jobs every week until you get a response back. Don't be discouraged by employers who don't respond or ghost you. Keep at it. It's a mental game.

Conclusion

I think if you do these things, you'll end up at a great spot after four years. If you're just now coming across this and you've been slacking, use this an opportunity to wake the fuck up, light a fire under your ass and lock in. If you're still in denial after reading this post and you have yet to get anything, light a fire under your ass, come to terms with it and lock in.
If you're in it to do zero work, cheat on your classes, mess around for four years and somehow wing a high salary, good luck. You're fucked. You're so fucked, in-fact, that you'll be wondering "why me and why is it so hard" for a long ass time.

Create a basic design. It won't be perfect. Mix-and-match different services and know why, how and tradeoffs between each approach.
Programming language is dependent on the role and what the company favors. Common ones are Java, C++, Python, C#, JavaScript / TypeScript and C. You can look at jobs that you would like to work someday, look at the requirements and use that as a basis on where to start learning. Things constantly change. Fundamentals build up on each other. Start small. Work your way up. Do not dream big. Dream realistic. Everyone is different.

2024.05.15 01:13 AnalSexIsTheBest8-- [M21] Finally came to terms my father is an irredeemable narcissist.

(Terribly sorry about the overly long post. I didn't think it would go on forever.)
My father is an absolute, irredeemable narcissist. I have known he had narcissistic traits for a long time, but I always harbored some hopes there was some good in him, at least some "good intentions" that get unfortunately warped in their execution. No, there are no good intentions and never have been. He is an egomaniac who relishes the authority and control he has over his family and constantly yells, insults, humiliates, blames and gaslights us. We are always at fault for anything and everything, while he is always in the right and a victim of the malevolence and disrespect of others. He uses every conceivable circumstance to denigrate our self-worth while increasing his own, like injecting himself in situations he has nothing to do with and freely giving unsolicited advice and critique.
He gets explosively angry and starts huge arguments (in which only he participates, because he shuts down even the slightest attempt at retorting) at literally anything and even when he doesn't, he always tries to put down our point of view to make us look like fools in comparison to him, to the point I have started actively avoiding talking about anything with him (which doesn't work, as he will purposefully start a conversation with the whole point of him looking very smart and me very dumb). My mother is treated like a houseslave that cooks and cleans without gratitude, even though she has a fulltime job, and he often yells at and insults her for some perceived disrespect. She is the one who financially contributed the most to my younger sister's and mine development, since my father is a massive miser and refuses to spend money on anything but bare essentials, or generally what he himself deems necessary. He certainly spares no expenses for his beach holidays.
I have no agency, no free will. I must go where he drags me to and do what he tells me to. He considers me (semi-openly) a lesser being than himself, like a dog, that must be infinitely deferential to his absolute authority and be happy and grateful about it. Any actions that assert me against (or even just besides) his self-interest are seen as acts of insufferable disobedience and harshly verbally put down. He generally believes our family has to completely revolve around him and we shouldn't have wills or schedules outside what is convenient to him. He never tells us when he plans trips, he just announces them and fully expects us to drop whatever plans we have and go. He sometimes gives us a choice whether to go or not, but always drags us anyway because it really doesn't matter what we choose. The choice is for him to feel virtuous, not for us to actually refuse.
The worst thing is, I have nobody to turn to. Everyone I have ever talk to about his behavior always says the same thing: "That's very sad, but he is still your father and you must respect him and take care of him in his old age", or "Well, he is doing the best he can. He didn't have a good childhood. You need to empathise with him and meet him halfway", or "You don't understand how much he is doing for all of you. He isn't that bad, plenty of fathers are worse. You are just ungrateful son". Now I understand they were saying this because they all had similar experiences with paternal authority and this was simply considered the norm, but back when I first started talking about it, in my early teen, this was very isolating and made me think those people were right and that I should both understand and put in work to make our bond better (I was still a naïve child who dearly wanted his beloved father's love and acceptance back then), plus he could be helpful and caring here and there. Every time I tried, it all ended up the same. After all, what kind of bond can a lord ever have towards his chattel? I tried and I tried, I cried and I cried and in the end, I was left completely broken. I spent the entirety of my teens deep in suicidal depression, anxiety and social isolation due to my father (can't really make friends when you're too scared they'll criticise and yell at you), all of which, of course, he blamed on me and my unwillingness to listen to his advice and go out and socialise (funny thing, he himself is a friendless loser for every single reason I named here. He very much isn't a charismatic narcissist). It's only a year or two ago that I finally started coming out of my shell and healing, though I still have a very long way to go.
The time I fully accepted he was completely filled with nothing but narcissism was when I overheard him insulting and criticising my mother for her protectiveness over us whenever he'd start his narcissistic outbursts. He told her she would always interfere when he tried to reach out to us, and when he elaborated, he meant that we wouldn't comply with his desires as instantly as he wanted. Furthermore, when my mother advised him he shouldn't be so forceful and try communicating, he said that there was no reason for him to communicate (the implication being that communication was only between equals and we weren't equal) and that we should simply obey him and it was all our mother's fault, since apparently, her defending us instilled us with the idea that we can actually have our own opinions and not immediately bow down to him. What really did it was when he told her she should have taken his side and immediately squashed any attempts to assert ourselves to him and leave us isolated and without support. It was so callous and cruel, that I almost started crying. He really is a narcissistic monster beyond any hope of change.

2024.05.15 00:39 Street-Magician-1436 AITAH for choosing my bff over family

Am I the AH for choosing my best friend (since we were children) over my sister?
I work as a flight attendant for a major US airline. Due to my job I get significant perks to travel. I, along with my parents, and a chosen travel Companion all fly completely free (on standby) It’s easily the biggest benefit of my chosen career. I’ve been at my company for just over ten years. My best friend has been my travel companion for the entire duration. We go on dozens of adventures a year. She tags along on my work trips, as well as plans different adventures for us to get away for a girls weekend. The major issue is that my sister is absolutely livid. This has been a sore spot since the very beginning. We get in explosive arguments at least 3 times a year over this. She says that she is family and that I need to rotate between her and my eldest sister. She also says I have “no family loyalty” and “no respect” and I’m “pathetic” for choosing my “friend” over family and that I treat my friends better than my family. Etc etc. It literally never ends. My best friend and I are so close we literally spend almost (if not all) holidays together. I celebrate Christmas with her and her family before I even go to see my family. Same for other major holidays. I will say when I first started as a flight attendant I wasn’t close to either of my sisters. While I am closer with them now than I was then I’m not anywhere near as close to them as I am to my best friend. My sister only wants the benefits to travel for Free with my mom and her husband. It’s not because she actually wants to use them to make memories with me. I’ve told my sister she needs to get over it because she’s never getting put on my benefits. Just because she’s family doesn’t mean she’s entitled to my work benefits. My sister says I’m a bitch with no family loyalty or respect for her. My other sibling and parents agree with my sister that my sisters deserve for me to rotate them and take my best friend off my benefits. Am I the AH for choosing my BFF over my family?

2024.05.15 00:38 SquibblesMcGoo Just counted and realized I'll miss Reload Max. Social Links by one (1) day

Decided to not follow guides and just apply my own knowledge about the game. I was feeling so peachy. Then the winter break just started way earlier than I thought (I thought it would be like New Year onwards). I'm done with everyone but Yukari who's rank 2. Aigis will unlock in January and I hear she needs 11 days because one rank takes two days
I need 19 days to rank up them both to max. I only get 18 because I gave Junpei some dumbass weeds from the flower store trying to help him. Fuck you too, Junpei lmao
I prioritized school links but still couldn't do it, mostly because I took a breather for a few days to unlock Sun and later realized it's like mega free and you don't need to worry about unlocking it early
If I was way off I'd feel better but one day is just making me inhale a salt pile. I also need to twiddle my thumbs for two weeks because off-school links are already way done during exam weeks and holidays. I'm obviously max stats too so I have literally nothing to do but smash buttons at the arcade for two weeks straight
I maxed both P4G and Vanilla P5 without a guide by just using in-game knowledge and had plenty of time left over. Persona 3 Reload is much more frustrating because you have so much dead time with nothing meaningful to do, and then a very narrow window to finish a fuckton of social links
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk
Edit. I was misinformed, Aigis won't take 11 days. Junpei will need that freed up space regardless for his last link episode though

2024.05.15 00:35 SeaAnybody8119 We just unveiled our Net Revenue Retention (NRR) Diagnostic Tools (Free) for B2B SaaS companies

Hi all,
We just released the Ibbaka Net Revenue Retention (NRR) Diagnostic Services toolset and it's all yours to grab for free.
We've long believed NRR to be the most critically important metric you need to follow in B2B SaaS. Many companies don't follow it, many people don't know it or even track it....if they do, they just pass on a single number to their board and call it a day. A lot of companies don't even know their NDR score.
New customer acquisition is king these days, and we've unleashed a set of free tools designed to help B2B SaaS companies evaluate their NRR processes, uncover opportunities, and create practical strategies for improvement.
  1. Download the NRR Diagnostic Guide = this is an essential resource that will help you navigate the NRR survey effectively and maximize the value of your personalized report.
  2. You take the quick survey = this will help gather key information and structure your approach to improving Net Revenue Retention using our very own Revenue Retention Maturity Model.
  3. Survey respondents will receive a comprehensive assessment based on the Ibbaka Revenue Retention Maturity model along with a personalized action plan to improve NRR.
  4. Download the NRR Data Collector spreadsheet = NRR improvements start with data. You can use this template to gather the data you need for your NRR analysis with the option of uploading data to the Ibbaka NRR AI Service which provides deep analysis of your NRR and discounting data.
4 easy steps to measure AND improve your NRR.
If you're interested in Pricing in the B2B SaaS world, check out our blog: https://www.ibbaka.com/ibbaka-market-blog - you'll find some really deep content on pricing by Ibbaka's Steven Forth, one of the top pricing experts/leaders in the B2B SaaS realm.
Cheers,
Ibbaka

2024.05.15 00:33 Fancycole Simple Will

Hello,
I am trying to create a will for myself and wife. A lawyer here in Oregon quoted me $1,800 to get the job done. People also have told me that there are templates online that I can fill out for free. Money is pretty tight right now so I would like to have something done soon in case I get hit by a bus or something.
I want to leave proceeds from the sale of my home (which probably has only 20k in equity) to my one year old son. My wife and I don't have any significant assets or retirement or anything.
Should I cough up the $1,800? Or, can you point me in the direction of a legitimate website where I could do my will?
Thank you in advance for your advice!

2024.05.15 00:31 johnrushx Just reached $300k ARR & 130,000 users. Here is how:

Today is a very special day for me.
Unicorn Platform is at $300,000 ARR!
I bought it two years ago for $800k with 40k users.
After having one bad year after the purchase, the next year, I managed to grow it to 128,328 users, who built their Websites, Directories, Job Boards, Launchpads, and landing pages for their SaaS, Personal, App, Course, or Podcast.
How I got there (last 12 months):
1. Redesign.
I went through 1000+ support tickets one by one to 100 frequent requests.
At first, I wanted to start fixing them, but it'd taken us a year. I slept on this idea for a few weeks and realized that half of these may be solved by changing our entire UX from page-based to canvas-based. Like Notion, where there are no pages. It's only a canvas with a page, and everything else comes in popups.
It just erased 80% of the tasks from the backlog.
Then we tackled the remaining 20%(not all ofc, still working on it).
It reduced churn from double-digit to single-digit.
2. SEO.
I knew very little about SEO a year ago, so I had to learn a lot from scratch. Instead of implementing just one strategy, I went on to try pretty much all of them at once
3. Directories.
I saw traffic from directories 2 years ago on my other project(marsx). So it pushed really hard on listing on all directories for Unicorn Platform too. back then, most directories were not so popular yet, so I was kinda lucky to list there early and as they went viral, I got really good share of that traffic too.
4. Product Hunt.
We launched there in July. If you win the product hunt, there is a very long aftershock. You end up in newsletters and blog articles. We took 2nd place, but it was a very busy day. We scored over 1000 upvotes, so we got pretty good traffic and results.
5. Talking to users. Helping them.
I sent an email to every paid user asking for feedback and starting a discussion. I talked to at least 300 of them. It helped me figure out some low-hanging fixes I could do to keep them, and I also had a very strong network effect afterward. Many new users would tell me they got a recommendation from their friend.
Eventually, I started simply helping out all my users every day(I still spend at least an hour a day). For free. With my feedback on everything they ask, tips, and advice. I even connected one guy who was raising a round to an investor.
6. Social Media.
I shared all my steps—not just MRRs but my actual steps on how I got there and what I did. Many of such posts went viral and helped other makers grow their products. This led to X becoming the top 4 traffic source for sign-ups.
7. Traffic from my directories & products.
I have 24 products in total.
So my other 23 products drive traffic to this one via links in the footer and banners, and sometimes I recommend it in an email. About 30% of the traffic comes this way.
Also, I have over 20 directories, some of which are very successful, and they drive good traffic, too. I had a gut feeling about directories 3 years ago. But my friends kept saying, "Directories are out of hype by now..".
So, I gave up on the idea until November, when I launched the gpt directory, which went viral with millions of visits. After that, I built a few new directories every month.
8. Word of Mouth.
I track this via social media mentions, and it's my most important metric. It's the one in a pair with SEO that leads to PMF. In Jan last year, I was pretty sad to see that the viral "best landing page builders" posts on the internet would never have Unicorn Platform in them.
But all that I did above helped, and we started to appear in many such posts. Today, 90% of the mentions come organically from people on the internet.
Thank you people. Thx for sharing. I work really hard to justify your trust.
9. Affiliate partners.
I've been running it for 8 months, and it works.
People bring sign-ups, and they eventually convert into paying users. Easy to setup. No effort at all once it's running.
10. Paid ads.
This one is short: I tried and failed. Most likely, I need to learn more about this, or maybe it never works.
11. Sponsoring other directories.
I sponsored a few directories to place my banner there.
I like it. There is traffic. The ROI seems good. I wanna do more of it. If you have a directory that's visited by busy founders, let me know, and I may sponsor you.
12. More templates and blocks.
I hired an amazing designer. He is the next Johnny Ive, trust me. We created many new templates and components.
Now, we're working on a new update that will 10x the power of Unicorn when it comes to visual stuff. Once this is out, you'll forget what webflow and framer are.
Imagine getting similar power with 10x less time than is needed and 20x easier UX.
13. Cross promo.
We partnered with Senja by adding their testimonial block to our third-party blocks. Now, Unicorn users can add Senja blocks with just a few clicks. It's so powerful that users love it and use it. We drove traffic to Senja, and they drove some traffic to us by posting on social media about this integration. We may do more, for example, sending an email to all our users about Senja, and Senja sends an email to all their users about a Unicorn.
I have many more such collaborations coming. The next one is RapidForms. Users will be able to add very advanced forms with multiple steps and even payment steps.
Launching it next week.
If you think your product fits in, too, let me know.
We both will grow our userbase by doing these collabs.
That's it.
I may have missed some details.
Just ask me in replies, and I'll answer.
P.S.I don't read DMs here, only on X or Linkedin.

2024.05.15 00:10 ManiacalSnowman Roadside Produce Where?

Hey Aucklanders,
I'm a Malaysian here in Auckland on a working holiday visa, and while I'm not-so-loving the capricious weather and loving the people so far my country's weakening exchange rate and the city prices are siphoning my savings.
On that note, thank you Auckland Museum for being free.
I used to also thank PaknSave and Woolworths for their good deals, but a few days ago my roommate let me know that around the outskirts, I suppose the fringes of Auckland, there are those roadside stalls selling fresh produce at much friendlier prices. I saw one by Weymouth selling two trays of 24 eggs for $20, at Woolworths one tray is $15. That and that they're straight from the farm really gets me happy.
Anybody know of where other such stalls, maybe a larger market with meats and other fresh produce, might be? I don't mind going far, I've got a car, and though gas here makes me tear up I'll wipe away the tears with purchases with pricetags lower than those offered by the yellow Woolworths discount stickers. Gas, btw, back home is NZD0.75 per liter.
Cheers

2024.05.15 00:09 National-Device7623 Need help with Personal Statement

I'm going to apply for bachelors courses in Computer Science with AI, ML or DS. I'm applying as a mature student and really really need this and scholarship as well. I am able to write an average statement but since now my whole future depends on this, it can't be a mediocre one.
I've read through a lot of templates and material available online that tells what it should have. I need some real examples of statements that got people admitted and awarded scholarships. If you could please share your personal statements that you've already used, I'd greatly appreciate it. Feel free to DM me.
If you work at a uni and can give some advice, I'd greatly apprecaite that too. Thanks.

Building an Email List

Creating an opt-in form on your website

Creating an opt-in form on your website is an essential step in building your email marketing list. By adding an opt-in form, you give your website visitors the opportunity to subscribe to your email list and receive updates, promotions, and special offers from your fast food chain business. To create an effective opt-in form, make sure it is prominently displayed on your website, easily visible to visitors. Keep the form simple and straightforward, asking for only essential information such as name and email address. You can also consider offering an incentive, such as a discount or a freebie, to encourage more sign-ups. Additionally, make sure to include a clear privacy policy statement to assure visitors that their information will be protected. With a well-designed opt-in form, you can start growing your email marketing list and reaching out to potential customers with targeted campaigns and promotions.

Offering incentives for email sign-ups

One effective strategy for increasing email sign-ups is by offering incentives to customers. By providing a valuable reward or discount in exchange for signing up for your email marketing list, you can motivate more people to join. For a fast food chain business, this could include offering a free item, such as a small fry or a drink, to customers who sign up for your email list. This not only encourages customers to provide their contact information but also gives them an immediate benefit for doing so. By offering incentives for email sign-ups, you can build a larger and more engaged customer base for your fast food chain business.

Promoting your email list on social media

Promoting your email list on social media is an effective way to reach a wider audience and increase your fast food chain business's online presence. By leveraging popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, you can create engaging posts that encourage your followers to sign up for your email list. Share compelling content related to your fast food chain business, such as exclusive offers, new menu items, and behind-the-scenes glimpses. Additionally, consider running targeted ads on social media to further promote your email list and attract potential customers. With Constant Contact's free email marketing tools, you can easily integrate your social media efforts with your email campaigns, ensuring a seamless and cohesive marketing strategy. Start promoting your email list on social media today and watch your fast food chain business grow!

Designing Effective Email Campaigns

Choosing a visually appealing email template

Choosing a visually appealing email template is crucial for your fast food chain business. A visually appealing template will capture the attention of your audience and leave a lasting impression. It is important to select a template that aligns with your brand image and conveys your message effectively. With Constant Contact, you have access to a wide range of professionally designed email templates that are customizable to suit your specific needs. Whether you want to promote a new menu item, offer a special discount, or communicate important updates, Constant Contact has the perfect template for you. By choosing a visually appealing email template, you can enhance the overall impact of your email marketing campaigns and attract more customers to your fast food chain business.

Crafting compelling subject lines

Crafting compelling subject lines is crucial for any email marketing campaign. It is the first thing that recipients see in their inbox, and it determines whether they will open the email or not. A well-crafted subject line can grab attention, create curiosity, and entice recipients to click through and read the email content. When it comes to email marketing for a fast food chain business, it is essential to create subject lines that are not only compelling but also relevant to the target audience. By understanding the preferences and interests of the customers, you can create subject lines that resonate with them and increase the chances of engagement. In this article, we will explore some effective strategies for crafting compelling subject lines for your fast food chain business with Constant Contact.

Including enticing visuals and call-to-action buttons

Including enticing visuals and call-to-action buttons is crucial for any email marketing campaign. Visuals help to capture the attention of the audience and make the email more visually appealing. They can showcase the delicious food items available at your fast food chain, enticing customers to visit your restaurant. Call-to-action buttons, on the other hand, provide a clear and direct way for customers to take action, such as ordering online or signing up for special offers. By incorporating these elements into your email marketing strategy, you can effectively engage your audience and drive them to take the desired actions.

Segmenting Your Email List

Categorizing subscribers based on their preferences

One important aspect of effective email marketing is categorizing subscribers based on their preferences. By organizing your subscribers into different categories, you can tailor your email campaigns to their specific interests and needs. This allows you to deliver more relevant content and increase engagement with your audience. With Constant Contact, you can easily segment your subscribers and create personalized email campaigns that resonate with each group. Whether your fast food chain business offers different menu options or special promotions, categorizing subscribers based on their preferences can help you deliver targeted and impactful email marketing campaigns for your business.

Personalizing email content for different segments

Personalizing email content for different segments is a crucial strategy for effective email marketing. It allows businesses to tailor their messages to specific groups of customers, increasing the relevance and impact of their emails. One important aspect of personalization is understanding the unique needs and preferences of each segment. By analyzing customer data and behavior, businesses can create targeted email campaigns that resonate with their audience. LLC formation is a key consideration for many businesses, as it provides legal protection and tax benefits. Incorporating this topic into email content can be beneficial for fast food chain businesses, as it can attract entrepreneurs looking to start their own LLCs. By highlighting the benefits and process of LLC formation, businesses can provide valuable information and establish themselves as knowledgeable resources in the industry.

Targeting specific customer groups with tailored offers

Targeting specific customer groups with tailored offers is a crucial strategy for any business, including fast food chains. By understanding the preferences and needs of different customer segments, fast food chains can create personalized offers that resonate with their target audience. For example, when targeting the top home security businesses, fast food chains can offer exclusive discounts or promotions to homeowners who prioritize the safety of their families. These tailored offers not only attract the attention of potential customers but also demonstrate the commitment of fast food chains to meeting the unique needs of specific customer groups.

Automating Email Workflows

Constant Contact provides a free email marketing solution that allows fast food chain businesses to easily set up and automate these personalized emails. Sending re-engagement emails to inactive subscribers

Sending re-engagement emails to inactive subscribers is a crucial strategy for any business that wants to maintain a strong email marketing campaign. By targeting subscribers who have not interacted with your emails in a while, you can remind them of the value your fast food chain business offers and encourage them to re-engage with your brand. One of the best email marketing examples for re-engagement is Constant Contact. With its user-friendly interface and powerful features, Constant Contact allows you to easily create and send personalized re-engagement emails to inactive subscribers. Whether it's offering a special discount, showcasing new menu items, or inviting them to exclusive events, Constant Contact provides the tools you need to effectively re-engage your subscribers and drive results.

Analyzing Email Campaign Performance

Tracking open rates and click-through rates

Tracking open rates and click-through rates is crucial for any email marketing campaign. It allows you to measure the effectiveness of your emails and understand how your audience is engaging with your content. By tracking open rates, you can see how many recipients actually open your emails, giving you insights into the success of your subject lines and email delivery. Additionally, tracking click-through rates helps you determine the effectiveness of your call-to-action buttons and links within your emails. This data allows you to optimize your email marketing strategy and make data-driven decisions to improve your campaign's performance.

Analyzing conversion rates and revenue generated

Analyzing conversion rates and revenue generated is crucial for any business, including fast food chains. By closely monitoring the conversion rates, businesses can identify areas of improvement and optimize their marketing strategies. Additionally, analyzing the revenue generated allows businesses to assess the effectiveness of their marketing campaigns and make data-driven decisions. With Constant Contact, fast food chain businesses can access free email marketing tools to track conversion rates and revenue. This enables them to measure the success of their email campaigns and make necessary adjustments to drive more revenue. Constant Contact provides a user-friendly interface and robust analytics that allow businesses to easily analyze their email marketing performance. By leveraging these tools, fast food chain businesses can enhance their marketing efforts and maximize their revenue potential.

Using A/B testing to optimize email campaigns

Using A/B testing to optimize email campaigns is a crucial strategy for any business, including fast food chains. A/B testing allows marketers to compare two different versions of an email campaign and determine which one performs better in terms of open rates, click-through rates, and conversions. By testing different subject lines, email designs, call-to-action buttons, and content variations, fast food chains can identify the most effective elements to include in their email marketing campaigns. This data-driven approach helps them make informed decisions to improve the success of their email campaigns and ultimately drive more customers to their fast food chain business.

2024.05.14 23:58 team_suba Itinerary review for 13 day trip in mid- October for honeymoon.

So my finances and I have decided to take an untraditional route and go to Iceland for our honeymoon. Planning it has fell on me. We are both pretty much doers when it comes to vacation and I don’t believe we would enjoy 10 days on a beach compared to something like this (our initial idea was RVing around USA- still on the bucket list).
So we would like to see the northern lights, I don’t think we will have much issue with that. I would like to see as many (or at least the big ones) waterfalls as possible. We are open to hikes but with the shorter days idk how much time we would have for it. I’d also like to hit up a few of the good hot springs / lagoons. I’d like to do the silfra snorkeling, myvatn baths, and maybe the glacier walk tour.
We are renting an AWD suv vehicle and plan on staying in a different place every night maybe 2 nights in some.
So here’s roughly what I have so far.
10/15 - 6am - we arrive pick up the car go straight to blue lagoon. I know it sucks but my fiancée is dead set on doing it and since we are right there we can get it out of the way. It would be nice to relax for a few after wedding things.
Head back to Reykjavik- see the city stay the night
10/16 - we both were thinking another night in Reykjavik. I don’t think it’s a terrible idea. I wanted to get to sky lagoon at some point also so this may be the time for that. See the city. If anyone has any recommendations on tours or things to see places to eat I’ll take them.
10/17 - leave for golden circle. May go straight to snorkeling at silfra from Reykjavik. With whatever daylight we have left try to see a few more things.
***Stay in bubble hotel in olvisholt possibly. Does anyone have any experience with this? This was on her bucket list. It’s a little pricey, is it worth it?
10/18 - try to see a few more things in the golden circle or the area. And then head to vik
10/19 - fosshotel itinerary TBD open to recommendations
10/20 would probably do the glacier walk this day. *** open to recommendations about tours/ companies. Katla looks kinda boring. I’m looking more into the vatnajokull / ice cave ones
Stay the night in hofn
10/21 - this is where my anxiety kicks in and I have no idea what to do. I don’t know what is over here how long it will take to cross or what the weather is. Is it worth splitting the East into two days?
Going to spend the night at hotel 1001 nott or that general area.
10/22 myvatn spend night in area
10/23 akureyri I know they have a beer spa and forest lagoon. Even possible whale watching in husavik although I don’t know how weather will be. Stay in area.
10/24 - I have no idea about this day. I know I want my next stop to be snaefellsnses but don’t know if that drive might be too much. Maybe stay at a place along the way? Is there much to see between akureyri and snaefellsnes worth spending a day for. Would be open to recommendations
10/25 snaefellsnes what’s even over here. I have to look through my saved posts but I would like to see it.
10/26 return to Reykjavik. Wind down. Maybe another tour or something. Stay the night
10/27. We dont leave until later in the day so we will have some more time Reykjavik. Yay
So if you have any recommendations. If you have made a similar trip and have your itinerary saved please please feel free to send it my way. Anything I should see / shouldn’t see. Any advice on my starred items is most helpful right now. Thank you guys. Idk what I would do without this sub lol.

2024.05.14 23:51 evild4ve Basic generative AI for conky backgrounds & wallpapers

I am setting up awesomewm and using Lua and Bash script for the first time. I was able to get this working, so on the one hand it might appeal to other beginners as an accessible project, and on the other this is a good juncture to seek out feedback from those who know better ways. u/digost explained to me about mkfifo yesterday and already that let me do something new in this.
wallpaper can be set up in rc.lua by adding the line awful.spawn.with_shell("feh --bg-scale ~/FILENAME.png"), so if this file is replaced with another png a different wallpaper will load
conky the system monitor is installed from pacman and it can be given its own background by following the installation guide to generate a config file at ~/.config/conky/conky.conf and adding or editing a line to the top of the conky.text section
conky.text = [[ ${image /home/dave/conkies/conkycar.png -p -50,0 -s 450x450}
Where 450x450 is the image size and -50 is an offset to get it to appear in the right place. These small images are about the same size as the cheapest generative-AI option, which I found for fractions of a penny and that's what gave me the idea. I will try not to promote or even mention the particular provider since it is non-Free.
conky configuration is something that some people spend time on as part of ricing. Although a basic process of pulling an image from the internet should stay the same across awesomewm themes, there could be limitless complexity in getting images to reliably visually-cohere. If the conky and the wallpaper come from related prompts into the same Model, then hopefully they can cohere at least sometimes, but for now I've just gone with colour red.
My first step is to create a salt list of theme words. I went to a free/non-passworded chatbot and asked it for a list of words to do with cars and trucks and fire and chrome. These go into a text file with a space at the start of each entry
conkies.top4salt.txt
 Automobile Vehicle Sedan Coupe {etc...}
These salt words are used to make each generated image slightly different.
First a .json request needs to be generated to a chatbot-type API. This uses a template from their site
conkies.TEXTtemplate
#\bin\bash curl --request POST \ --url PUT THE URL OF THE TEXT-PROVIDER'S API HERE \ --header 'Authorization: Bearer PUT THEIR API KEY HERE \ --header 'Content-Type: application/json' \ --data '{ "max_tokens": 2048, "mode": "python", "model": "icortex-1", "n": 1, "temperature": 0, "text":
The last field "text" is the prompt, which can be brought in from a separate textfile
conkies.prompt.txt
"A prompt for an artist to design a promotional photograph, of a luxurious red sports car, which must place strong emphasis on:- (1) an Arch, (2) flames, (3) a red background (4)[
The " at the start is needed for .json request's format - as can be seen from the other lines. The [ on the end is there as a delimiter but ended up not being used: the API just ignores it.
For this site this is enough to start with. The prompt is set up with a script, which is also used to launch the process once everything is in place:-
conkies.TEXTpromptsetup.sh
#!/bin/bash find . -maxdepth 1 -type p -delete mkfifo conkies.fifo -m 0700 echo $( cat conkies.TEXTtemplate > perl -pi -e 'chomp if eof' echo -n $(cat conkies.prompt.txt) >> echo -n $(shuf -n 1 conkies.topksalt.txt) "," $(shuf -n 1 conkies.topksalt.txt) "," $(shuf -n 1 conkies.topksalt.txt) "\"" "}" "'" >> sh conkies.TEXT-prompter.sh) > conkies.fifo & alacritty -e sh /home/dave/conkies/conkies.IMAGE-promptsetup.sh
The first line clears any leftover fifo files from previous times the script has run. The main body of this joins the parts of the .json prompt together into a compliant format, in the file conkies.TEXT-prompter.sh The shuf commands pull three salt-words into the prompt. The perl command takes a newline off the end of the conkies.TEXTtemplate which otherwise breaks the format. There are some syntax marks at the end of the file, the " one needs an escape character.
conkies.TEXT-prompter.sh is then run; the data that comes back from the API of the service provider is written into the fifo; and a new shell is opened for the IMAGE prompter.
Hopefully the data that comes back from the API is a prompt. If it's an error-message or the money has run out the resulting images might be very strange!
The IMAGE prompter also has to be set up beforehand. The IMAGE provider I used had a slightly more complex format than the TEXT provider I used, so it had to be made from a start section, the TEXT-prompt, and an end section. The format was on their website and involved some intricacies to do with different Models being compatible with different versions of Lora.
conkies.IMAGEtemplate
#\bin\bash curl -X 'POST' \ 'THE IMAGE-PROVIDER'S URL GOES HERE' > conkies-$(date +"%m_%d_%y_%T").png \ -H THEIR API-KEY GOES HERE \ -H 'accept: */*' \ -H 'Content-Type: multipart/form-data' \ -F 'lora2_strength=.7' \ -F 'lora2=' \ -F 'lora1_strength=.7' \ -F 'prompt=
example prompt from the TEXT-provider
"The artist should design a promotional photograph of a luxurious sports car, with an arch in the background, surrounded by flames. The car should be in a state of acceleration, with its fenders gleaming and its hubcaps spinning. The flames should be in shades of red, orange, and yellow, and should be emitting sparks. The background should be a deep red."
conkies.IMAGEtemplate-footer
' \ -F 'width=512' \ -F 'height=512' \ -F 'steps=30' \ -F 'sampler=dpmpp_2m_karras' \ -F 'model=epic_diffusion_1' \ -F 'negative_prompt=ugly, tiling, poorly drawn hands, poorly drawn feet, poorly drawn face, out of frame, extra limbs, disfigured, deformed, body out of frame, blurry, bad anatomy, blurred, watermark, grainy, signature, cut off, draft' \ -F 'upscale=1' \ -F 'seed=4116668295' \ -F 'format=png' \ -F 'guidance=7' \ -F 'lora1=' \
These are combined together as follows by the second script:-
IMAGE-promptsetup.sh
#!/bin/bash cat conkies.IMAGEtemplate > perl -pi -e 'chomp if eof' cat conkies.fifo cut -f6 -d":" cut -c 3- rev cut -c 8- rev >> perl -pi -e 'chomp if eof' cat conkies.IMAGEtemplate-footer >> sh conkies.IMAGE-prompter.sh && sh conky-relaunch.sh
They are launched at the end as conkies.IMAGE-prompter.sh, which downloads a timestamped .png file from the image provider.
and the last script sorts the images and relaunches conky with the most recent.
conky-relaunch.sh
pkill conky mv *.png ~/conkies/conkycars/ && cp -p $(ls -dtr1 "conkycars"/*.png tail -1) ~/conkies/conkycar.png exec conky
To make wallpaper instead would need to change the image size in the conkies.IMAGEtemplate file and point rc.lua to the folder it's been downloaded into.
To generate a wallpaper and conky background at the same time I think it would be easiest to duplicate everything to another folder, so that the text prompts are not the same.
At the end on an unmodified conky with a free wallpaper from https://www.pixelstalk.net/download-free-arch-linux-background/ it looks like
https://preview.redd.it/iiscm9bifg0d1.png?width=1565&format=png&auto=webp&s=b836c7a6ba3c5df01768e5014d2c3a20ac5601fc
https://preview.redd.it/cbq17sfigg0d1.png?width=1596&format=png&auto=webp&s=72b889bce8fe995ce57a6e4bdd433de4f0c0b505
There are various problems. Any changes to the API will break it but that is in the nature of these things. Both API providers required accounts. With the text-provider I am on some trial limit they have which is more than enough free requests per month to make these conky prompts, but it might be monetized in the future. The image-provider I had to pay for but it's the minimum amount. It might be that the credits expire and my conky becomes a financial commitment. But for this $10 I could generate a lifetime supply of pictures of what AI thinks cars look like... with wing-mirrors only for the passengers :D
From zero-knowledge I've been able to use a named pipe to connect two APIs together, and used bash script to manipulate text into compliant formats for .json requests. I'm becoming conscious that simple tasks have to be broken down into more stages and more files than it initially appears and this becomes messy. I generally have nothing in place to check each script is outputting in the right form, or to give error messages. If I accidentally included one special character in the text prompt, that would break the image output, but if I include any comment lines to warn myself then the script will have to check for those and remove them... so I just have to remember.

Do I also need an itinerary with all the spots I plan on visiting? I’ve requested a 3 week visa with Paris as my only destination so just showing a hotel booking and flights for Paris should be good I guess? Please let me know if I’m missing something! Will post my experience here later! Thanks!
