Preface
"The one thing that bothered us is we couldn't put a bow on 'Biddum'......." -Greg Newkirk
Several months ago, I “accidentally” noticed something odd that I believe may intimately link the events of The Unbinding and Hellier. I think it may suggest some strange underlying narrative involving what I can only describe in brief as "a conflict between fire and water", which does not even do it justice. It will make no sense unless you are familiar with both shows. It will make more sense if you are somewhat familiar with Thelema and Enochian Magick terms, or the occult generally, but I will try to provide enough info for you to get the gist if not. It also requires a lot of historical background information, and some disclaimers, so I apologize for the rambling, paranoid, novel-length post. Hopefully someone finds it worthwhile or at least amusing! I have been hesitant to put this theory out there for a variety of reasons. Coming off schizo, projecting an opposing meaning on someone else's experience, etc. Just keep in mind that I'm tentative about all of it and you should be as well. However, the more I looked into it the more compelling information I found, and the more convinced I was that there is something here. So here goes no-thing.
First off, the amount of mileage one will get out of this post is entirely dependent on how much stock you put in the NAEQ cipher. I know it was a driving factor in season 2 but I’m not sure what the Newkirk crew or their fanbase thinks about it these days, seems like there’s always a lot going on over here. Because of the way the cipher works, It’s hard to lay all the evidence out in linear narrative, so I would suggest re-reading the section here where we go over the sums to see how the ones toward the end relate to earlier entries.
While I enjoy the material put out by the Newkirks, and they seem like affable folks, I disagree with some of their takes on what the paranormal is. I tend not to agree with the idea that hauntings and other supernatural events are the result of humans psychically "haunting" them ourselves, but independant external entities of some sort. Some of that will come out in my analysis here, and I hope it’s clear I mean no personal offense, just presenting a different view. All differences of opinion aside, after discovering NAEQ through their work it has revolutionized my own practice in ways I won’t get into, so consider this a humble gesture at paying that favor back if nothing else.
Because plagiarism can get you in trouble online these days I should also say some of the more “novel” techniques for applying the cipher, as well a some of the specific sums/terms I decided to check, are drawn from The House of Every Flower, a book put out by Bobby Hale and The Temple of Babalon-Choronzon. I would highly recommend it, and their other works, to anyone interested in incorporating the NAEQ cipher into occult practice. Point is, because of events in my own life I’ve come to put a lot of stock in Greenfield’s cipher as a tool to obtain usable information from Non Human Intelligence and that’s what led me to notice the patterns I’m going to share here, and the reason I feel compelled to do so. All this preamble is because the information below could be interpreted as suggesting a radically different take on what’s going on in both cases than what Greg and Co. seem to have settled on, and I want to make it clear I respect them and I’m not trying to be some magick poobah coming out of the woodwork to show them what’s what. With that in mind, I do think the correspondences below demand serious consideration.
PART 1: The Background, and how I got behind it
"The ZaZa got me connecting the dots"-Dracula Flow
I came to notice the following pattern because around the time The Unbinding was released I was doing a lot of reading on the hexagram as a magical symbol, rituals it’s used in, different cultural associations etc. Thusly, I became interested in the history of Crowley’s Star Sapphire ritual that’s gestured at so frequently by “them” in season 2 of hellier, as the hexagram features prominently there. To make a Long story short, when Crowley got his prophetic commission from “Aiwass”, he set about adapting many of the rites he learned in the Golden Dawn to his new Thelemic system of magick. This was a decades long process, with many of them going through many iterations. If you're interested Israel Regardie has an extensive document going over Crowley’s interpretation of the Headless Rite vs, others, the beast also talks in his Confessions about how he changed that into Liber Samekh over a few years.
As far as I can tell there is no similar line of documentation for the evolution of the Star Saphire but we do know which golden dawn rite it was adapted from, namely the ritual of the hexagram. It is through an application of NAEQ to this earlier version of the ritual that many startling synchronicities between it and the events of The Unbinding and Hellier become obvious. The GD hexagram rite has a preliminary invocation of the elements in Enochian (an allegedly angelic language recovered by the magician John Dee). The invocation goes EXARP (air), HCOMA (water), NANTA (earth), and most interestingly BITOM (fire). The crone flick happened to come out while I was in the thick of this reading, and I happened to notice “Bitom” sounded a lot like Dana’s utterance of “Biddum”. It would be an easy “telephone game” mispronunciation, but by itself I would not have thought much of it. However I thought “let’s run that through the secret cipher of the ufonauts” and right away there's this: BITOM=95=NEWKIRK.
I will expand beyond the crone seance in a little bit, but even in this one scene it is highly suggestive. The entity was complaining that Gowin’s scanner “burned” it. Fire burns, fire is BITOM=95=NEWKIRK= the name of the guy who was having Gowin zap it with the scanner. Also, note that JASON GOWIN=101=ENOCHIAN. While interesting, I would not blame anyone who dismissed this as mere "noise in the signal of phenomena" at his point. However as we continue to pull on this thread we will find much more shocking correspondences.
Anyways, that was how I got to the premise which began my inquiry. It seemed to me that when the crone was complaining about "brother biddum" it was in reference to Greg and GOWIN=58=NOOSE burning it, not some other entity. I became less convinced of this the more I dug at things with the cipher, but it's still something to keep in mind.
There are also other ways BITOM ties incredibly well into the narrative, for instance, If we want to stick with the interpretation of the crone being imprisoned in the stature with and by a hostile male presence, this lines up very nicely with the already present elemental themes within the film. The crone is repeatedly associated with water. She leaves watery footprints, is in a statue of, and may literally be, a historically dubious water goddess MOKOSH, may have later been christianized into SAINT PETKA,(=152=NAILS IN EYES) or may be a trapped KIKIMORA (=105=BIRTHDAY) bog spirit etc. Strand's birthday fell on SAINT PETKA's feast, all of which is discussed in the same exchange.
Could it be that the crone was bound by an antagonistic fire spirit, a “Brother Bitom” if you will? Perhaps a human sorcerer employed such a naturally, elementally, antagonistic spirit, or even the word BITOM itself to imprison her within the statue for reasons unknown? I would be curious to know if Greg was born under a fire sign, if something happened when he was young involving fire, or if fire has presented itself as a theme within his ongoing hellier adventures since we last heard about them. This is not the last time you'll see fire, or some sort of "fire entity", associated with him by the cipher.
Like I said, I'm not trying to attack the newkirks here, but I was somewhat surprised they continued with this even after the crone-critter started hurting Dana in retaliation. This could mean this spirit was trying to talk to them about the situation in enochian as well as english. Given that enochian would be a likely “first language” for this sort of being, the idea of it lapsing into it while in agony makes a lot of sense. Sorry for how bleak that sounds, I swear I’m not trying to roast the Newkirk crew here, but if we are to take any aspect of this situation seriously, I think it’s a compellingly logical interpretation.
So, we see here that this interpretation adds an interesting, if bleak, dimension to the estes communications with the crone, but after this discovery I decided to check the other elemental names on enochian tablet of union against terms relating to the crone, hellier, etc. This had underwhelming results, but made me think to do a general NAEQ analysis of The Unbinding, which got some really striking results, which make up the bulk of part 2.
Part 2: Tables of Union
( A NOTE ON NOETIC NOTATION: lowercase words denote sum-matching quotes from The Book of the Law which are interesting in context. A dash “-” between such phrases denotes that they are separate quotes which the cipher has placed in that sequential order, making a new phrase with doubly improbable resonance. All other CAPITALIZED terms are just words with the same cipher value.)
-A Somewhat Underwhelming NAEQ analysis of the Enochian Tablet of Union:
EXARP=86= CHORONZON=blue am= a dog, but-a key also and=body in a breath-bride=her be-images= -
CHORONZON is a major spirit within the enochian system who tests initiates.
The Star-Sapphire is blue, and is in part about connecting the magician to Sirius, the dog star, which is key to this mystery. In The Unbinding, she really do be an image.
HCOMA (water)=46=WOMAN= so she-sorrow=toy-what shall-when woman=words 463
-Mokosh is a quite watery WOMAN. -The Unbinding is about a sorrowful woman trapped in something which could be confused for a "toy".
NANTA=54= SLAVIC=DAVID
-If you squint, Mokosh comes from the slavs, Hellier emails came from David. NANTA is the earth name. Earth houses caves where both goblins and crone emerge. Suggestion of "origin?"

BITOM=95=NEWKIRK =UNBOUND =bid me=flame is=its red=no right= woman called-word of sin-ye shall wear-yet to-your wrath -

"Bid me" biddum. Bitom. Flame, red. NO RIGHT.

-When you're gacked on Gobleki Tepi Gobstoppers, (as I am 24/7) these BOTL phrases seem to mirror many of the themes within the estes session, and my idea of BITOM as the word heard there.
So, yeah, not much there besides the NEWKIRK=BITOM=UNBOUND bomb. When I first found that I halfway expected the other Enochian/Elemental names to have strong correspondences to other aspects of these topics, but they do not, besides the extreme stretches I make above. I was still very pleased to have found the bitom thing and almost stopped digging here. However, I decided to do a broader check of terms relating to Hellier against those relating to the The Unbinding, and which triggered a landslide of paydirt. After striking such a rich vein of crackhead gnosis with BITOM, I circled back to look for general NAEQ matches between terms relating to hellier and the unbinding independent of the enochian terms, and found things that I think are even more thought provoking than the BITOM theory, and even contradict it somewhat.
-PART 3: AN AVALANCHE OF APOCALYPSE
HELLIER=93=BIDDUM=UNITY=MOTHER=FIRE WALK=VIRGIN
Can we admit this one is nuts?! HELLIER=BIDDUM argues against BITOM as the real word, but would ad credence to the idea of Greg being the one addressed by "Brother Biddum", or there being some other strange relationship there. Recall how the only real lead on the significance of "biddum" before yours truly got on the case was that it seems to be related priests, or praying, while "Hellier" is related to stonemasons and by extension freemasonry. UNITY brings the mind back to the tablet of "union". MOTHER and VIRGIN are very interesting as they point back to the maiden/mothecrone symbolism. FIRE WALK is one of the things I'm pulling from Bobby Hale's book where he does a NAEQ analysis of Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet. It appearing here brings us back to the association between Greg and fire. A FIRE WALK can refer to an initiation ritual in some cultures where boys walk across hot coals to become men. Then again, maybe this is just pointing to that paranoid suspicion of mine regarding Greg and Fire, or Fire Spirits, the specifics of which seems just out of reach to me.
"Through the darkness of future's past,
the magician longs to see
One chants between to worlds
Fire, walk with me"
You'd think that's as crazy as it gets, wouldn't you? And you'd be wrong!
MOKOSH=53=ANGEL=BALLOON=KELLY=KORE=PAGAN=WICCA=”NAEQ”
This is the crown jewel of my little project imo. KELLY connects to the Hopkinsville Goblins. BALLOON?! The fact that this and NAEQ ad up to the same value as MOKOSH within NAEQ is just so improbably significant given everything else we've been discussing. To me it confirms there's something real here and suggests some underlying linkage between both cases, that perhaps the same "producers" sponsored both.
ANGEL could lend further credence to the Enochian connection. BALLOON and KELLY bring up the possibility of there being a more substantial connection between the crone and the Hellier case. BALLOON is what you get on your BIRTHDAY, in the form of a shimmering blue star. It’s what the secret chiefs used to get Greg and Co.’s attention. KORE, which literally translated from greek is “maiden” is an ancient title for “Dread Perseophone.” While the myth of Hades and Persephone most are familiar with today from Ovid casts her in a very ineffectual light, she was originally seen as an uncontrollable and fearsome cthonic deity, even more so than Hades in the earliest periods of Greek religion. KORE is a euphemism used for her in many early inscriptions because she was so feared you didn’t just throw her real name around. KORE is also a name for a demon in later medieval grimoires.
There are obvious parallels between the abduction of Persephone by Hades, and the mentioned abduction of Mokosh by Veles (slavic underworld god). In fact, given what the folklorist in the film said about the historically shaky and artificial nature of much “slavic myth” I would not be surprised if it were a direct adaptation of Hades/Persephone into the slavic pantheon by a modern author. The appearance of KORE (“maiden”) here both relates to this parallel (original?) Greek myth, and the maiden/mothecrone symbolism so popular with modern neo pagan/witch groups, and from which the Catskill Crone gets her name.
PAGAN and WICCA, are as self explanatory as they are striking.53 also happens to be the number of demonic servants attributed to Astarot and Asmodee within the Abramelin ritual, another Crowley connection. KORE happens to be the name of one such demon in that group. It is also notable that ASTAROT=74=ARARITA. Ararita is the central divine name invoked in both the Golden Dawn and Star-Sapphire hexagram rituals.
Despite being a god of the underworld, it’s important to note I was unable to find any mythological “fire connection" with Veles, perhaps a point against the BITOM theory. However, in the cipher:
VELES=67=HUSBAND=SAINT=WITCH=FLAME.
67 is also a funny number if you’re a student of history. Mothman, first satanic baptism, lots of murders, wars, earthquakes, other fun stuff. Diabolical things happen on dates where it appears. Mokosh allegedly became Saint Petka and is thusly kind of a "Saint Witch". Here enveloped by HUSBAND-FLAME. A spirit of water and a spirit of fire, maybe making love, maybe making war. Below are some other interesting entries which are more self explanatory and don't really connect to the weirder themes above:
UNBINDING=142= JOHANNES DEE=MEN IN BLACK=CAKES OF LIGHT Here we see the full name of John Dee, the men in black, and thelema all associated with the title of the film.
BOUND=64=BLUE=LIGHT
BLUE LIGHT like the dog star, while the crone was BOUND she shone a LIGHT in the darkness of the study.
THE CRONE=124=SOMERSET= EUCHARIST=ECTOPLASM=EVOCATION(this is also the sum of my legal name!)
BIND=63=ENOCH=GRAY=LAMEN=MABON=ORION
WRISTE=92=HECATE=MOTHMAN=HERMES=PAIMON=ROOSTER
JOHN DEE=97=HEXAGRAM=PARANORMAL=BRIDGE=PISCES
DEMETER=ONEONEONE
DESPOINA=107=COLTSFOOT
STPETKA=114/93 (second number is entries generated)
sapphire=121/93
I’m very impressed by these results, but I also think it’s important to keep things in perspective. Even if I'm right about these being valid connections it could just be a product of "all occult stuff lines up no matter where you start". There’s also this list of important terms I attempted to find connections among, but remain stubbornly isolated. I would say that only about a third of the terms I looked into yielded anything interesting in the cipher, but maybe some of you can find meaning I missed:
CRONE=71=age long-am alone=is a star-is red-is thy-it now
CATSKILLS =84/71
CATSKILL=79
CATSKILL CRONE=150
CATSKILLS CRONE=155
ELLENVILLE=130
NAILS=45
BROTHER=104
Lots of other names relating to Hellier did not connect and I won't bother listing them. All in all I think this pretty compelling, assuming that we are to take the cipher seriously. I also get that some of it is pretty radical and hope nobody mentioned is offended lol. But what you do you think?
Am I in the black lodge blunt rotation with the secret chiefs, or simply high on my own supply?
Sound off in the comments below!

2024.04.03 20:30 VegabondLibre Rant: Readers who unironically treat Jeremy as Shuri's "son" does the very thing the story is criticizing. Johannes ruined both of their lives. [The Fantasie of a Stepmother/A Stepmother's Marchen]

(Huge spoiler alert)
Let me start off with this. Shuri was robbed. She was robbed of her girlhood, her youth. As the story unveils itself, we, the readers, exactly how much she has lost due to her being a child bride of the oh so great Johannes. Which is why it drives me up the wall whenever I see people unironically treat the relationship between Shuri and Jeremy as one of a mother and son. Or invalidate their friendship, including Jeremy's affection towards her (hell I don't even ship them) because even story wise, it is important.
The age difference between Jeremy and Shuri is ONLY 2 years. Two years. It's natural he'd never see her as a mother figure, hell he shouldn’t. I've always thought how odd it was for Johannes to not have adopted Shuri as a fiancee for his son. Yk, since she's quick and smart, wouldn’t she be more of an asset if he "groomed" her to be the partner of his successor. Except noo, he wanted her, a child who is almost the same age as his son, to be his bride. Because he felt entitled to her face, her existence that reminded him of Ludovica. So he literally grooms a kid to be his wife, have her take the burden of a family, literally traumatised her (physical, emotional and mental abuse included) so much that our girl is an unreliable narrator and is showing signs of PTSD till this day. Now imagine being Jeremy. Your esteemed father marries a kid your age, you bond with the said kid stepmum, forge a close relationship and later on fall for her. You know that it's wrong, societally speaking, that she'd be dishonoured if you ever voice it out. On top of that, as you grow older, you realise how much this young woman has lost thanks to being tied to your family. Then you start to learn more unsavory bits about your "esteemed" father, about how much you were blind to, about how much she had suffered. It doesn’t help that your facial features resemble him and triggers her ptsd in one instance. Can you imagine how devastating it feels? So you vow to be the knight of this beloved existence (Shuri), the one who has given her all and lost so much. Jeremy's unrequited love is integral to the story of ASM/TFOAS. You can't deny it because not only it's important to both Shuri and Jeremy, but also cause it shows how much damage Johannes caused. Shuri is a young woman, who deserves to live her youth, be childish and enjoy girlhood/womanhood. Imo unironically treating her as a mom to Jeremy, out of everyone is wrong. The twins or Elias may have seen her as a mum but for Jeremy, she is "Shuri" above everything. (NoShu ftw tho.)
Tldr, Shuri was a parentified child, no matter how she views herself, the readers should not see her as a "mom". Especially to Jeremy.

2024.04.01 21:44 Pluiarchos RPG Hell - The Match Saga

Sorry for the lengthy delay but I was recently reminded that I still had another story to tell. As promised, here it is.
Edit - And for those who don't know, or don't remember, the context about some of the other events and characters mentioned (such as Sierra and Delta), the link to the original story about that is here. https://www.reddit.com/DnDDoge/comments/vgxx8n/sing_a_song_of_seven_rpg_hells/
Let’s start with the main cast. There were a few others but they didn’t really interact with Match so their involvement was negligible. Names naturally changed.
Myself - playing the fugitive heretic from the Imperium of Man, guilty only of refusing to blindly follow the Lectitio Divinitatus, surviving Caliban, and marrying a Foxwoman.
Kaya - the female Kitsune cleric married to my character. IRL she and I were friends who’d bonded during the events of the War with Sierra. She’d been the one who’d been bullied in real life because of Delta. In-game, she’d semi-retired since becoming a mother to two pairs of twins, because watching over four rowdy, inquisitive, trickster children was a full-time job.
Jana - a female battlemage who’d joined our group not long after Sierra’s takeover. IRL she was not only a friend of mine, but ex-military (Navy). This will be important later.
Mako - a female water elementalist. Also an escapee from Bravo and Sierra.
Van - an Amazonian fighter who’d left the original group long before Sierra’s takeover. In character she avoided all of the usual Amazon stereotypes and didn’t have any male-oriented resentment issues. She might have been stronger and tougher than most men, but didn’t act superior.
Johann - our DM. Overall, he was a pretty decent guy who’d become bitterly opposed to Bravo’s DM style and swore never to emulate it. As such he wasn’t too lenient with the rules, but went to great lengths to avoid double-standards and loopholes.
Legs - one of our newer members who had NEVER experienced Sierra or Delta. He played a male elven magic-user who could best be described as a researcher and magi-archeologist.
Desmond - a male Human fighter who led a small mercenary company who’d also escaped from Sierra and Delta. His trip across the ocean had been less fraught with danger and his group had arrived without mishap.
And finally, Match - the subject of this tale. She had been a friend of Legs IRL and he’d originally vouched for her. She character had been a multi-class fightemagic-userouge, and her race had been a hybrid of Drow and something else that had never been fully clarified. She had made the usual opinions about how “alignments were too confining”, but overall nothing about her character had been unworkable or outside the rules.
Over time, that slowly but steadily changed. Legs had said that Match was cool overall, and initially Match had seemed a little distant and cordial, but not excessively so. We just chalked it up to “new person jitters” and went on from there. At that early stage there really hadn’t been any red flags.
This story starts a few months after the events of “Sing a Song of Seven RPG Hells”. I’d since moved on from the gaming group of Bravo, escaped from Sierra and Delta, and begun to enjoy myself once more. The new group was getting along fairly well and my own character had begun to rebuild his life in a new land. The trip had been arduous though, and a saboteur had struck the ship he and his family had been on, causing it to sink while still far out from shore. Concentrating on saving his family (all of them) he’d wound up losing most of what he’d brought with him, including a lot of offworld advanced technology and almost all of their funds. Still, his entire family was safe, and a few days later they’d been rescued by a group of adventurers (all of whom were played by my new gaming group, so that whole event had been Session Zero for us) who then brought us all to port. From there, my character started to build a new life. The family grew with another set of twins (meaning double the playful antics of Kitsune youngsters), his wife had established a new temple, and by the end of the first game-year their lives were going as well as could be expected.
Everyone in the group, both players and characters, had successfully escaped from Sierra and Bravo. Mike had attempted to join our group, but when we found out he’d only done so to “keep an eye on us” we promptly booted him from the group.
Apparently, some of Sierra’s friends/followers took umbrage by our departure (regardless of whether it had been voluntary or not) and wanted to try and make things difficult for us. Fortunately, none of them got very far.
Despite all of that, it had been a good time that I remember fondly. We’d started exploring more and more of the land, discovering new things to learn about and investigate, and over time we started having fun with Johann’s Sandbox campaign.
Legs was especially eager during that time. His character was always in the middle of everything, good or bad. More than once, his experiments wound up with him becoming either the antagonist or the catalyst for a campaign. His most infamous example of this was when he taught advanced magical theory to a tribe of Hobgoblins in an attempt to stimulate them into potentially achieving a high stage of cultural evolution. He’d believed that their inherent hierarchical nature would enable them to curb any potential for abuse.
What actually happened was that the Hobgoblins quickly reorganized their society along imperial lines (Johann made them into a combination of Urak-kai of Lord of the Rings and the Persian Empire, with the most powerful mages taking the roles of satraps, sultans, and the God-King Xerxes) and began to quickly expand, dominating and threatening all of the other cities and societies within the campaign.
It was all Legs’ fault, but it DID give us the backdrop for what would become a very cool campaign (that became full of “300” references). But as annoying as Legs’ actions were, they were NOTHING compared to Match’s actions.
As our adventures moved forward with Match joining the cast, one thing we started to deal more and more with was Match’s attitude. According to her character’s background, she was standoffish, distrustful, and a little sarcastic.
In application, she’d criticize everyone for just about anything.
Van’s amazon was too chummy with everyone.
Mako was too cowardly and undisciplined.
Kaya was a joke of a character who barely contributed anything.
Jana was a stupid blockhead who didn’t understand was real strength was.
Desmond? Another dumb, unimaginative, two-dimensional lummox.
She really hated my character because I had “all this power and you don’t use it?! What a joke!!”. Since my character had transferred over to Johann’s group unchanged, I STILL had all of the levels and abilities I’d gained during the Campaign of the Seven. HOWEVER, Johann had decided early on that in order to balance things out that I had to lose just about everything else my character had, Including all of my technology beyond what could be easily carried. To Match, I was a joke because instead of dominating and controlling everything in the campaign, I was limiting myself to being a part-time adventurer taking care of a family (that she considered equally lame).
My response to that? “Sierra, is that you?” Kaya and Jana chimed in as well, wondering the exact same thing (although Jana thought it might have been Delta, not Sierra). That led to a lengthy discussion with Legs. He assured us all that Match was not Sierra or Delta: he knew her IRL and she lived nowhere near either of them.
We calmed down, and since all three of us still had bad memories of those two, we chalked it up as hyper-vigilance: not EVERY sarcastic, attention-seeking wannabe edgelord was Sierra in disguise. We just needed to chill.
The term “edgelord” hadn’t been invented yet, but that had been exactly what Match had been playing as. Most of the party just wasn’t on “her level” and she just couldn’t be bothered to help people who were “beneath her”. Even when she did join us on adventures, she only ever came along reluctantly. Yet her abilities were average at best, especially since she was playing as someone who was trying to be super-competent at everything and failing. She hadn’t even been trying to be a “jane-of-all-trades” either; she didn’t understand that by multi-classing to the degree she had, it meant that she advanced much more slowly. Her skills were equally limited due to the need to invest in her primary abilities, leaving few opportunities to learn additional knowledge unrelated to her classes. She also didn’t seem to realize that in order to use her magic and rogue skills, she was limited to light armor ONLY.
What this meant was that Match’s character, regardless of her intentions, had limited combat skills, limited defense, a narrow range of spells, and not much in the way of any other knowledge or skill due to the fact that she still a relatively novice character. Meaning her character was dependent on being part of a group that could help compensate for her limitations...and she’d treated her Charisma score as a dump-stat.
In play, her character’s attitude depended entirely on the circumstances. When dealing directly with our characters (who were more powerful than her) she was sullen and passive-aggressive. When dealing with NPCs she ran the gamut between not-so-passive-aggressive to borderline psychopath, treating just about every NPC the party dealt with with contempt and using her thief abilities to take advantage of them whenever she thought she could get away with it.
Buying equipment from a merchant? Steal from them!
Dealing with nobles? Steal!
Delivering supplies to a forward outpost? Pilfer!
Mercy to a surrendering enemy? What’s that?
The ultimate example of her character’s brutality was when we tracked down the hideout of a group of bandits who’d been raiding the area. It turned out that they weren’t hardened criminals, but refugees who’d been driven out of their home due to the growing Hobgoblin threat who’d taken to banditry out of desperation.
Kaya and Mako had argued for trying to help them. If there was a threat looming on the other side of the Barrier Gorge, we might need all the help we could get. The refugees hadn’t been motivated by malice, and their actions so far hadn’t been excessively violent, so maybe there were better options to just destroying them.
Match took it upon herself to start killing everyone she could purely out of spite. To her, they had nothing tangible to offer, so they weren’t worth anything beyond experience points. A couple of Fireball spells into the paddocks where the bandits had all been contained was all it took to wipe out pretty much all of them.
That led to a massive argument, complete with Match using The Excuse (“It’s what my character would have done.”), which only pissed off everyone else even more, forcing Johann to stop the session for the night and ret-con the entire incident.
That ultimately left a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth, and we started being much more cautious in regard to Match IC. Even though the refugee incident technically didn’t happen, it had still been a major Yellow Flag.
If Match’s out-of-character attitudes had been significantly different from her in-character persona, things might have gone differently. Unfortunately, they weren’t. She began bickering and arguing with other people in the group about things other than the game. Initially, the arguments had been over critiques about her character. She was frustrated over why she wasn’t highly effective and competent, but she treated any advice and criticism we gave her as personal attacks. She just refused to make any changes to her character, and she especially HATED the idea of making a new one; this was HER character and you’d better get used to it!!!
Except, as stated previously, her character wasn’t particularly powerful or effective on her own. She had no spectacular innate abilities, none of her attributes were outrageously high, and she possessed no magical items of overwhelming power. Yet she was operating as if she did and not understanding why the rest of us weren’t going along with it all.
Looking back on it, I’m pretty sure she’d been trying to create a Mary-Sue but failed in the attempt.
Her mood, and her relations with everyone else, got worse, resulting in more arguments and bickering with the other people in the group about things other than the game (and making me have some flashbacks about RPG Hell and Delta).
One of the most memorable arguments had been one that I’d arrived at the tail end of. She’d been on a rant about the stupidity of humanity in general, how everyone was so fucking stupid, and how the gene pool needed to be cleansed. How? According to her, only people with I Q’s over 140 should be permitted to have children. Everyone below that point deserved nothing. Naturally, no one was agreeing with her, and as they argued with her, she doubled-down, saying that her way would result in “better people”.
Me - “Match, you DO know there’s a name for what you’re proposing, right?”
Match immediately shut up at that point.
If one of us truly hated Match more than anyone else, it was Jena. Precisely because of her military background.
At one point, during one of our pre-game gab sessions, Match had explained that she was also ex-military. Specifically, U.S. Navy and had only served for two years after an age waiver when she was 17. That admission raised some red flags in the minds of both Jena and myself. Match had also previously described herself as someone with MAJOR issues against authority figures.
That made me wonder just how Match could have possibly even gotten through Basic if she had massive issues with authority since, as an Enlisted, she would have been dealing with people who were nothing BUT authority. Age waivers for someone under the age of 18? Those were real. Enlistments of only two years? I’d never heard of those before.
Jana was even more skeptical. She HATED fakers and some of Match’s answers to her hadn’t made sense. She agreed with me that Match’s authority issues would have washed her out of training, and two-year hitches were unusual. Later, when I asked Match what her MOS had been, she’d answered that she’d been an engineer onboard a ship.
Jana POUNCED on her like an enraged mountain lion. Jana had been a shipboard engineer for several years (serving onboard the Enterprise at one point) and had retired as a Petty Officer, and in order to even be considered for that duty a lot of tech-oriented training was required. Match never would have been able to qualify for it in the short span of time she’d claimed to have served.
That led to a massive explosion of insults and arguments between the two of them that rivaled those of Sierra and myself a year earlier. Match disappeared for a week or so after that, and when she returned she barely spoke more than two words to Jana at any time.
My own final straw with Match came when she had a full-blown meltdown about my character’s children. The four kids (two boys and two girls) were a few years old at that point in the campaign, and were part of the campaign at large, sometimes serving as plot hooks (“Hey, look at what little Akagi found near the well.”) or comic relief (such as cavorting around the town performing their own version of Gangnam Style). Overall, everyone liked them because they often served as a way for their characters to demonstrate genuine heroism, and because I was honestly enjoying playing Kitsune-type characters.
Match, on the other hand, HATED them. She hated them so much she openly declared how she wanted to see them suffering and dying, for no other reason than to see the characters die.
Her - “I want to see them crying and bleeding from their eyes! That’s how much I hate them.”
Me - “...Why? Why?! They haven’t done anything to you. They never do anything to you. Why do you want to see them come to harm when they haven’t done anything to deserve it?”
Her - “Because that’s the kind of game I want! My life’s hard enough and I want to play hard too. I want to see things get wrecked. I want things to be harsh and brutal. Because my life isn’t much different.”
Me - “This isn’t Warhammer 40K, Match. You’ve been told repeatedly that this isn’t that kind of campaign.”
Kaya - “And we’re getting sick of you trying to make it into that kind of campaign.”
The final straw with Match came a little while later as the “Persian Hobgoblins” Campaign kicked into full gear (the official start of which involved kicking a Hobgoblin envoy into a conveniently-placed Pit of Death). It started off with a series of wilderness themed dungeon-crawls focusing around scouting and assessing the full scope of the threat of the hobgoblin hordes. The war was in its early stages, and served as the backdrop to the entire campaign. We were only a small group of powerful characters with limited resources, but we had the potential to make important contributions in the effort to stop the threat. We had to use a mixture of strategy, resource acquisition, diplomacy, and combat effectiveness at the right times to achieve maximum damage. We had an overall objective, but unlike Sierra’s Campaign of the Seven it didn’t involve any PvP conflicts: the antagonists were clearly defined and something we could all rally against.
Match, on the other hand, took the whole situation as a perfect opportunity to go full-throttle hyper-edgelord murderhobo, calling for the elimination of anyone suspected of supporting the Hobgoblin tribes. And by “support” she meant failing to give anything and everything they had in order to fight them.
Meaning she was all for forced conscription, forced labor, confiscation of property (without compensation to the owners), silencing dissent, brutal discipline, and making examples of anyone who challenged her authority.
Anyone who wasn’t of immediate use to the war effort was a “waste” in her opinion. When Match started explaining what SHOULD be done to “waste” in her opinion, Desmond and Jana were the first ones to completely lose it with her.
Desmond - “You mean what happened/didn’t happen with those bandits a while back?”
Jana - “We’ve already got some major enemies, Match. Why are you trying to make more?”
Match - “Hey! This is just how my character operates. It’s her nature. You need to just back the hell off and let me play her how I want her to be.”
Mako - “So what is she exactly? Vlad Tepes? Stalin? Seriously, Match, just what EXACTLY do you want your character to be? A psychopath? It’s freaking us all out.”
Match then began cussing us all out as “wimps and losers” who were too stupid to understand a “complicated” character like hers. Her character was beyond mere considerations of “good and evil” because she was destined for vastly greater things. She had a destiny, and that destiny required she make sacrifices as needed to attain power. If useless people got in the way, they had to be removed. If they held her back, they deserved to be destroyed. Her character was meant to RULE, and anyone who failed to recognize that had to be eliminated. No one had the right to oppose her and she was sick to HELL of our stupid rules that were keeping her from having fun.
Me - “Match...my character has a sniper rifle and a clear line-of-sight on you. I can end your destiny with a single shot. The only thing preventing me from doing so is the No PvP rule. Knock it off.”
Match - “You can’t threaten me like that!!!! It’s against the rules!”
Johann (the DM) - “The rules you just said you hated because they keep getting in your way?”
At that point Match logged out, quit the group altogether, and was never heard from again. It was a little while before we all resumed the campaign, but we resumed it without Match. Legs had been shocked because he’d never seen or heard of Match behaving the way she had ever in real life. Her conduct had been both a complete surprise and unsettling: it was obvious that Match had some SERIOUS issues and needed some kind of help, but our group was NOT the help she needed.
None of us were therapists, and despite giving her multiple cautions and chances, she didn’t care at all about how we felt about the way she treated us. Thankfully, she removed herself from our gaming group before things deteriorated any further.
And ultimately, Johann decided to just remove Match IC from the campaign by having her go missing during a mission and no trace of her ever being found again. It had been a little anticlimactic, but at least Match was gone, the game resumed, and we ALL avoided a repeat of RPG Hell.
And abundant “300” quotes and memes were used (and enjoyed) by all.

2024.04.01 21:43 Pluiarchos RPG Hell - The Match Saga

Sorry for the lengthy delay but I was recently reminded that I still had another story to tell. As promised, here it is.
Edit - And for those of you who don't know the full context of some of the other events or characters mentioned (like Sierra and Bravo), the story about them is here. https://www.reddit.com/rpghorrorstories/comments/vgxyrsing_a_song_of_seven_rpg_hells/

Thekla Arason Grandmother Age: 63 … Occupation: Co-owns her husband’s fish market. Immigrated to the US from Iceland. The twins have always been incredibly close with their grandparents— afterall, they were the only family figures the two ever had in their lives– but, they were particularly close with their grandmother, Thekla. An immigrant from Iceland, Thekla had it rough since she and her husband, the twin’s grandparents, Johannn, moved to America. In hopes of supporting their future family, which they had always dreamed of, they opened up their own fish-market. For as long as they can remember, the girls have always, in some way, shape, or form, helped out with their grandparents buisness. Be it with going out their grandfather on his big boat, learning the ins-and-out of properly catching fish— or helping Thekla with customer service, they were always around the shop. Despite this, their grandmother was demanding, nor bossy and overbearing. Instead, she was kind and warm and forgiving. Whenever the twins would make a mistake, no matter how big and bad it was, she would always find a way to forgive and to forget. After all, to her, family was the most important thing, and she raised the twins with this mindset as well, helping them to become the close sisters they are today.
Jóhann Arason Grandfather Age: 64 … Occupation: Runs and works at his own fish market. Immigrated to the US from Iceland. Everything his wife, Thekla was, Johann was not. Perhaps it was due to his loss, or rather absence, disappearance, or whatever it was that happened to his child— but the twin’s grandfather has always been an overprotective fellow. From an early age with the twins, he was overbearing and domineering of Charlie and Charlise. Strict curfew and household rules to name a few, nevermind the fact that they always had to be working in the stinky, smelly fish shop so they would never be out of their grand-father’s sight– just to name a few of his overprotective acts. And, to top it all off, he was incredibly harsh and seemingly cruel. Sometimes he showed no warmth at all, and the twins were left to wonder if he even cared for them. Thekla, who had put up with the stubborn man for ages, never let them believe that for too long. Infact, despite all of his strictness, cruelness, and coldness, Johann truly loved his grandaughters with a passion. She explained that, even though she scarecly brought up the twin’s parents, their grandfather truly was just simply afraid of losing another one of his “children.”
Orion Hughes Rescuer; acquaintance Age: 14 … Occupation: N/A—Demigod, currently resides at Camp Half-Blood. One of the two demigods that helped rescue Charlie and Charlise from Maine, after the two got attacked by wolves, and safely bringing them back to Camp Half-Blood.

Inventory…

  1. 1st Place Trophy - An awarded from one of Charlie’s soccer matches, Halfway through the game it had started to rain and by the end of the match Charlie had been soaking wet, though her grandparents still took the twins out for ice cream (Which ended up with Charlie sick for weeks, she still doesn't regret not going home sooner)
  2. Golden Necklace - A golden necklace with a light blue stone encased in the middle, Charlie has had the necklace for as long as she can remember, and despite asking her grandmother multiply times neither of them knows where it comes from.https://imgur.com/a/FAI01mW
  3. Stuffed Animal Cat - A cat stuffed animal that charlie has had since she was a young child, her grandmother would always tell her icelandic folktale of Kisa the Cat before she would go to bed, Charlie ended up naming the stuffed animal “Kisa,” https://imgur.com/a/aavFXhd

  1. Cone Shell - On Charlise’s sixth birthday, her grandmother gifted her a large-sized; white-and-pink cone shell. She told her that, whenever she would feel lonely or homesick in the future, she could put her ear against it, pause, and hear the sound of the ocean. . . The sound of home. https://i.imgur.com/sYLGOx0.jpg
  2. Ballerina equipment - For a brief period of time when the twins were younger, they enjoyed ballet together. Although Charlie was quite clumsy on her feet at first, Charlise quickly grasped the hang of it, and before she knew it, was able to dance as easily as if it were her second language. Charlie quickly dropped the “sport,” in search for other hobbies, although Charlise continued to dance her little heart out. It wasn’t until she grew older that money grew tighter, and her grandparents could no longer support her ballet classes, and with that came the loss of her hobby completely. Despite this, she likes to practice in her free time. https://i.imgur.com/Uv66qTL.jpg … (Charlise’s ballerina shoes)
  3. Small Paintbook - Charlise owns a small paintbook that she carries around in a large tote bag, and whenever she has the free time to unwind, typically outside, she’ll use her watercolors to paint the scenery surrounding her. She particularly enjoys painting things or people she likes— she has dozens of canvases with paintings of Charlie, the ocean, and her grandparents on them.
  4. Sea Glass Necklace - A shiny, dark blue color that resembles her eyes; Charlise owns a silver, sea-glass necklace that she’s had ever since she was a young child. Whenever she feels anxious or nervous, she’ll tap at it with her finger, the rhythmic noise helping to calm her down. https://i.imgur.com/ccHKmxJ.jpeg

Backstory…

(To be updated as their story progresses.)
The twin’s, Charlie and Charlise, have always lived a seemingly normal life.It was always the same, mundane yet happy and simple routine since they were young. School, where even though it was hard to learn due to the learning difficulties they had, they enjoyed their time making friends and getting to study all these different things in life. And, when at home, they got to help out with the family’s business, getting to master many skills that would someday help them when they would take over their grandparents business. That was the plan, afterall.Despite not ever hearing much of their parents, they never thought things would reach to the extent that it did one fateful afternoon. After years of asking and wondering what happened to their parents– who their parents even were, why they were never around and why their grandparents couldn’t just tell them— everything came to a halt when the twins were returning home from school. It was normal. Like every other day. They would walk home, with one another, as always, talking about what they did that day, what they would do the next, rinse and repeat. But life had other plans in store. At first, it was the ignorable yet unshakeable feeling that there were eyes watching them. Then, it was when they were all alone, an orange color dimming the sky as the beautiful afternoon set a chilling breeze flying through the air— that they heard it. The growl, like a wolf, but when they saw it was seemingly ten times bigger. They ran and ran, both afraid and terrified of what would happen if the creature just so happened to catch up with them, until they felt like they were safe, and that they couldn’t run anymore.Yet they knew that false sense of hope wouldn’t last forever. After running inro their rescuers, Orion Hughes and Bailey Rennes, sent out by Camp Half Blood personally, they were met with the confrontation of a lifetime. Battling wolves was something that seemed straight out of a night-marish fairytale book in the past, but quickly became something they would have to live with for the rest of their lives. Especially the guilt, horror, and terror that came with it.

Now…

After running away from a blood-thirsty pack of werewolves, becoming arsonists, as well as runaways, and a taxing car crash— Charlie and Charlise Arason have made Camp Half Blood almost fully intact. They had been unlucky in the sense that the twins spent what felt like days being hunted and tracked by werewolves. But, they had been lucky enough to be found by Orion Hughes and Bailey Rennes, the self proclaimed “Demi-Gods” who killed the pack leader and scared off the other werewolves— and brought the sisters to safety in the valley and rolling hills of Camp Half Blood. They were placed into the Hermes cabin, being told that they would be claimed soon, but fornow, cabin eleven would welcome the twins. The girls had spent the past few days tucked away in the Hermes cabin, not wanting to leave each other alone in this strange summer camp. That's where they are now, A bunk bed in the corner of the room where after a few days of self isolation they twins agreed to go to dinner and meet new people.Leaving the Hermes cabin the girls follow the clusters of campers towards the dining pavilion. The girls look around and see a sea of campers and.. goat men? Not one of the strangest things they‘d seen, but queer nonetheless. They take a seat amongst the other children of Hermes, remembering their earlier agreement the twins turn away from each other and begin looking for a new face.
(OOC: This has been months in the making and Meg and Ducky are super excited to properly introduce Charlie and Charlise Arason! Charlie is written by Ducky and Charlise is written by Meg.)
( OOC: Meg, here! For further clarification, the now section is an invite for your character to either interact with Charlie and Charlise separately— meaning you’d only interact with one of them— or both of the twins, meaning both me and Ducky will reply to you as both twins. Feel free to pick which twin, or if you want to talk to both! Just make sure to clarify it in your comment ;) . )

2024.03.22 13:57 Comrade_dylatov AMBUSCADE - 496

“See anything, sir?” Inquired gunner Garrick Rausch, who sat lazily in the hull of the rumbling Baneblade. Commander Dovorr Kyarus sat on the ten-meter barrel of the gargantuan tank, spreading his legs comfortably on the gargantuan rocket launcher. “Negative, Rausch,” the Commander replied nonchalantly, “Tröman, anything on the Auspex?” He passed on the question, taking another long drag from his Lho stick as he checked the breech of his autogun for the who-knows-how-many’th time.
“I’m… not picking anything up, sir.” Came the instantly recognizable staccato voice of tactical officer Johannes Tröman. Kyarus heard a sigh, “And why the frag is that a problem?” replied the brawny operator of the demolisher cannon, Otteu Bruhl, “Relax a little bit, Tröman! We’re out here on a leisurely drive on the prettiest beach east of Terra while Konarski and company are freezing their asses off! This is practically a vacation!” The gunner laughed, and he wasn’t entirely wrong.
Kyarus analyzed his surroundings, to his left there were dozens of inviting (but abandoned) restaurants and souvenir stores, painted with brilliant colors like pink and yellow along the equally bright street. Just across the aforementioned road was a beautiful golden-sand beach, stocked with hovering chairs and umbrellas in front of a stunning aquamarine bay, so clear that you could see the reef of exotic fish just out in the center.
Of course, this beautiful region was backdropped by the sorties of aircraft flying over the burning City of Starling that sat at furthest inland point of the gulf. Distant artillery cannons thundered as the metropolis both sent and received barrages of explosive shells. Kyarus could even see huge plumes of smoke in the desert sands past the city, remembering that they weren’t the only people coming for the T’au.
But, if one blocked out the sounds of distant gunfire and the occasional building-rattling boom, Konarski could see the allure of the city. If he wasn’t destined to throw away his life in a pointless crusade of forgiveness for people who died worthlessly over half a millennia valiantly sacrifice himself on the line of duty for Krieg, he could even see himself retiring there.
“Kraust!” The Lieutenant called out for the driver, Kraust Pajk, “How much further until we actually reach the city?” Kyarus heard some faint self-contained mumbling from the front of the ship before the reply came, “With the speed we’re moving, about two hours, accounting resistance!”
The Commander groaned, “And if we don’t ever run into some brainless defenders?”
“One hour, thirteen minutes, twenty-eight seconds.” Blurted Tröman, “Give or take one point four six minutes.” He said proudly, “Throne, Tröman,” began Bruhl, “do you ever shut up?”
“Not unless I-“
BANG
ssccchhwweeeeEEEEt
The entire tank suddenly erupted into noise, the crew rushing to their various positions as Kyarus scrambled back across the barrel into his hatch while frantically pulling up his rebreather as pulse fire began to spit out from the windows, “Ambush! Ambush!” The Commander exclaimed obviously, turning his personal Autogun on the seemingly abandoned shops along the road and opening fire erratically on full auto.
The calamity soon continued down the line as transports unloaded their men and Grenadier teams already rushed to breach the buildings with frightening rigor. Kyarus wasn’t as eager to storm into the arms of the enemy as his comrades, “Did anyone see that fragging anti-tank gun?!” The lieutenant exclaimed, ducking behind one of the opened hatch doors as jack-of-all-trades Junden Stagler climbed up the ladder and racked the heavy stubber before unloading wildly on the concealed ambushers.
“On the beach! They’re coming out from under the sand!” He heard a voice, spinning to see heavier armor-clad xeno warriors rise as sand shook from their uniforms and began firing. Dovorr quickly returned the gift by spotting a pair with a kind of handheld railgun and gunning them down with his rifle. The sponsons on the side of Retribution quickly opened up on these new arrivals, bolter rounds tearing further troops to pieces as the flamers scorched anyone who got too close.
BANG
ssschhwweeeEEEE
BOOM
“Frag, they got Järgen!” Pajk exclaimed, the tank grinding to a halt to avoid slamming into the burning Malcador ahead of them. Kyarus raised his autogun barrel and focused on commanding now as the sponsons and infantry team began to dispatch the sand-warriors, “Right stick, cut through the sand! If you see that AT gun, you kill it!” Kyarus ordered, lurching forward with the rest of the vehicle as the titanic metal beast jerked right and rolled through the beach sands, crushing a few lounging spots as it went.
Kyarus keenly watched the windows of the buildings across the street as Retribution rolled past the burning Malcador in the street. Two overzealous ambushers attempted to peak out, but they were quickly cut down by the heavy stubber.
The tank move ahead of the flaming obstruction, and Kyarus spotted it, “First floor, pink building! With the ‘Keep Gryllus Free’ poster! Traverse l-”
BANG
ssschhwweeeEEEE
krCH
EEEEEEowwwww
Kyarus hunkered just above the edge of the hatch, a reflexively-placed hand pressing down on his helmet. “Left! Traverse left!” The commander finished his prior statement, quickly returning to his combat stance and firing a flurry of autogun rounds at the reloading railgun crew. The xenos had nearly gotten him with a lucky ricochet off the ground. “Fire!” The commander bellowed in the midst of reloading his rifle, “Send it!” Relayed loader Marcellus Kruger, who’s statement was quickly followed by an “On the Way!” From Rausch.
The entire tank shook thunderously as the gun fired, releasing a two-hundred twenty millimeter rocket-propelled projectile at supersonic speeds at the point-blank target. The entire building that the round struck simply gave in and collapsed, crushing the gun (if it still even existed) under its frame. “Good kill, traverse front! Now finish off the rest of the prickly fraggers!” Kyarus remarked, turning to the camouflaged ambushers in the sand and spraying volleys of autogun fire in deadly rows.
The planned ambush had practically turned into a massacre. Red flashes began to emerge from the windows of the derelict shops and restaurants as Grenadier teams swept through the T’au fireteams. While Retribution, and a few other tank crews present, were familiar with such combat, most of the troops deployed alongside them had never seen it. An effective introduction for the rookies into the warfare of the 41st millennium.
They gunfire died down to a sporadic exchange of rounds or a brief execution bolt. “Tröman. Auspex. Now.” Said the clearly peeved commander, evidently unhappy with his tactical officers previous mistake. The Krieger mumbled to himself for a moment, “I, uh…”
“What, spit it out!” Ordered the commander, who grew increasingly impatient.
“We’re being jammed, sir…”
Kyarus swore, jammed? So the Xenos could’ve been anywhere, then…
“Remain at full attention! We could turn a corner on those blue bastards at any moment!” The Lieutenant ordered, picking up his Vox transmitter in the command cupola as he turned to the column behind him.
Following a circular motion with his hand as to usher the infantry back into their vehicles, the commander rose the radio to his masked face, “Penance through Expiration, come in Penance.
The vox crackled for a moment, before the voice of Baptise Weber chimed in, a speaker who sounded almost like the progeny of a wealthy imperial lord who was bored with the toys he had been playing with and wanted more, “This is Penance through Expiration, what say you, Retribution?
Kyarus groaned after shutting off the microphone for a moment, he had hoped someone else in the crew would’ve picked up, “Weber! It’s… good to hear your voice,” the commander said with as little sarcasm as he could manage, “Damned Apostle got hit a railgun, she’s totaled. No survivors. We’re moving up to lead the column.”
“Understood, proceed.”
The Lieutenant didn’t even bother responding, he clicked the radio off. Throne, how he despised talking to that arrogant fragger. “Pajk! Full ahead, stay on the road! Stick to the map and try to get us to Starling in one piece!”
The driver chuckled, “I’ll do my best, sir!”

2024.02.16 23:25 therendude Help finding information about Johann HORNISCH - listed as missing/dead from WWII

I am trying to help my partner's mum find out any information about her birth father. She is now in her 80's and was adopted (not officially) out as a very young child during WWII. We have only recently discovered that most of her maternal family perished in the holocaust, and discovered some info about her birth father, and need help finding more info.
Note: Only names included below are those confirmed to have passed, or very strong assumption they have passed (e.g. would be well over 100). I am not sure if I am allowed to upload any of the documents so leaving them off for now, but can link to them if helpful...
Almost all of her maternal family ended up in camps, with most perishing Auschwitz and Sobibor after transiting through Westerbork. However a guard (Leo de Wolf) at Westerbork recognized her birth mother (Schoontje VERDONER, 1916 - 1999) when she arrived, it is documented that he says she had twins with a German soldier (Johann HORNISCH, born in Vienna on 15/01/1910 aka Hans Hornisch) who is at the Eastern Front. De Wolf says she should be considered as being married. On 1/6/1943 de Wolf adds that her case is analogous to ‘van Praag’. (I don’t know exactly what he means, but guessing a similar case). On July 9 1943, Schoontje requested to be released because she was married to a non-Jew, Johann Hornisch. The card says that some documents (can’t read which ones) are required about the children. In July P. Diamant (an official in the camp?) adds that ‘declarations are negative’. On 31/7/1943 the documents/declaration are handed over and Schoontje was released on August 11.
Johann Hornisch is listed as ‘missing or dead’ in 1946. We are trying to find out anything possible about Johann, but don't know where else to turn to find the info. He seems to have lived at various addresses in Amsterdam in 1937-1938 and may have also spent some time in Utrecht and Belgium. He listed his profession as ‘saxophone player’ and ‘musician’
We would love some help to try and track down any records or find any more information or confirmation of his death in the war, and/or where that was. Also very interested if he had any siblings or find out anything about his ancestors.
We would also be very interested in any information about the guard (Leo DE WOLF) at Westerbork Transit Camp, who recognised her mother when she arrived and knew that she had twins with an Austrian soldier fighting at the Eastern Front. How did he know her? How was he able to recognise her (there would have been thousands of prisoners)? Or was this just an application that he administered?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2024.02.03 05:13 Lost-Beach3122 Clone High Brand New Cast?

Shows like total drama and skins have done this, where after they wrap up with the old characters, they would introduce a whole new generation of characters in the same series. So this is a hypothetical brand new cast after the old cast graduate from Clone High (around Season 5)
Main Cast: Alexander Hamilton, the Trung Sisters, Rasputin, and Irma Grese.
Alexander Hamilton is shown to be a huge slacker and much more lazy compared to his clonefather. He also hates that everybody references the musical when speaking to him.
Trưng Trắc & Trưng Nhị are identical twins but are very different personality wise having the nice twin/mean twin dynamic, with latter being the mean twin and the popular one while the former being the nice twin and the shy one. They're heavily based on the Finches from Skins.
Trung Nhi is also extremely drug addicted and promiscuous due to the pressure of living up to the original Trưng Nhị. She's not as promiscuous as Cleo but is a very close second.
Lin Manuel Miranda guest stars in an episode as himself performing Hamilton in Clone High.
Rasputin is the comic relief but is very stoic and always hooking up with women which could rival JFK. There's also jokes about him putting poison on his lunch.
There's an episode with a subplot about Rasputin wanting to die but can't because he's the clone of Rasputin.
Irma Grese is basically the love child of Cleopatra and Topher Bus. Like Topher, she would pretend to be post about kindness and positivity and posts herself doing yoga all the time to distant herself from her evil and disgusting clone mother but manage to be a mean and horrible person in her own way.
Irma's horrible behavior gets exposed on camera by Trưng Trắc which makes Irma go mask off.
The big love triangle is between Alexander Hamilton and the Trung Sisters and has to choose between the simple Trung or the feisty Trung, parodying the Archie, Betty, and Veronica love triangle.
Irma Grese becomes the Cheryl who wants to take Hamilton from both Trungs though Irma does it more out of spite than out of any real feelings for Alex. Irma tries to get with Hamilton by arguing “both our clone parents were racist”.
The painting at the Grassy Knoll of Lincoln's assassination gets replaced with a painting of The Burr Hamilton duel with one of the characters pointing out “how convenient” it is.
Lots and lots of Nazi jokes with Irma Grese with Irma sharing a station with Anne Frank for home economics and asking Anne to “check the oven”.
An episode idea is having Hamilton run for student body president against a clone of Aaron Burr.
The Donner Party clones from episode 7 of Season 3 appear and are depicted as very creepy with no one wanting to be near them.
The theme song is basically the theme song lyrics of Season 1 with the style of music in the reboot. The file names also changed which are: Aaliyah

Etymology and other trivia:

Yugi's Deck

  • Gandora Geas is a reference to Final Geas, a Trap Card used by Yugi Muto in THE DARK SIDE OF DIMENSIONS that was used to summon Gandora Cross, the Dragon of Annihilation, another counterpart to Yugi's original Gandora, the Dragon of Destruction. (A geas is an Irish-folklore term for an obligation or prohibition magically imposed on a person.) Its effect of Special Summoning a monster after using its effect is a reference to how Silent Swordman LV7 was brought back after Gandora used its effect in Yugi's Duel against Dark Bakura.
  • Silent Swordman Zero and Silent Magician Zero are references to Yugi's Silent Swordman LV0 and Silent Magician LV0, respectively. Silent Magician Zero's Level-increasing effect is also a more faithful recreation of how the original one's worked.
  • Tricolore is French for tricolor.
  • Mashimarshmallon is a portmanteau of mashimashi (Japanese for "to increase" or "to enlarge") and Marshmallon, another of Yugi's monsters. It has the effect of Marshmallon Glasses built into it as well.
  • Gold Coffer of Light is based on Yugi's Gold Coffer of Sealing (Gold Sarcophagus in the TCG), whicn in its original iteration was able to prevent the usage of any card sealed away inside it. This card's effect of being able to send back to the Graveyard a monster Special Summoned from there by a Magic Card effect is a reference to when Yugi sealed away his own Resurrection of the Dead to prevent Dark Yugi from using it in their final Duel against each other. Its effect of being unable to be destroyed by monster effects is a reference to how the card sealed inside the original Gold Coffer was unaffected by any magical effect, including Gandora's ability in the manga.
  • Turn Silence is a reference to Yugi's A Leap in Time -Turn Jump-, which was used in his Duel against Dark Bakura to skip time ahead to three of his turns into the future (thus this card's effect being able to raise a monster's Level by 3, similar to how Yugi's Silent monsters gained LVs with each passing turn). Its artwork is a reference to a scene from that Duel in which Yugi's Silent Swordman destroys Bakura's Zoma the Ghost. This card being able to negate a monster effect if activated in response to one is a reference to how the time skipped by Turn Jump effectively prevented Bakura's Zoma from applying its damage-inflicting effect at the end of that Battle Phase.
  • Ties of Friendship is a reference to Yugi's Ties of the Brethren, and has a similar effect to it. This card's artwork mimics an illustration drawn by Kazuki Takahashi and published on the STUDIO DICE official website with a message of support for the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The illustration depicted Yugi Muto with the original versions of the monsters in this card's artwork, and was later printed in DUEL ART—a collection containing some of Takahashi's illustrations.
  • Silence Towards the Future's artwork and effect are a reference to a scene from Yugi Muto's Duel against his other self in which he uses Treasured Cards from the Heavens (Card of Sanctity in the TCG) to draw multiple cards and power up his Silent Magician.
  • Strong-Hold the Hidden Fortress's title is a reference to when Dark Yugi referred to Yugi's Strong-Hold the Moving Fortress as "the trap of the hidden fortress."

Antique Gear

  • Antique Gear Dark Golem is a reference to the fact Chronos de Medici's Deck was called a Dark Medieval Deck in the GX anime.
  • Antique Gear Tanker's artwork and ATK-increasing effect are a reference to when Chronos equipped his Antique Gear Soldier with Antique Gear Tank in his Duel against Napoleon in the anime.
  • Antique Gear Commander's pose mimics one Chronos himself struck often during Duels, while his bladed weapon is a visual reference to Chronos's Duel Disk, which was built into the Duel Coat he wore.
  • Antique Gear Duel depicts a scene from Chronos's second Duel against Judai Yuki, in which Antique Gear Ultimate Golem attacks Judai's Flare Neos. The phrase Competitive Bout (Kyōtō) is a pun on the Japanese word for "vice-headmaster" (also pronounced kyōtō), referring to the title Chronos held at Duel Academia at the time of that Duel. This same pun is used for the card Competitive Bout - Cross-Dimension (Cross-Dimensional Duel in the TCG).

Phantasmic Performance

  • Refrain (pronounced "REH-FRAWN") is the French word for the English refrain or chorus—the line or lines that are repeated in music or in poetry.
  • Couplet (pronounced "COO-PLAY") is the French word for the English couplet—a pair of successive lines of verse, typically rhyming and of the same length.
  • Both Refrain and Couplet are reference to a rondo—a musical form that contains a principal theme (sometimes called the "refrain") which alternates with one or more contrasting themes, generally called "episodes", but also occasionally referred to as "digressions" or "couplets". This alternation can also be seen in their effects that return them to the Pendulum Zones after a Fusion Monster is Special Summoned.
  • Spectacular Bach is based on Johann Sebastian Bach—a German composer and musician of the late Baroque period, generally regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music.
  • Flowering Étoile is named after Danseuse étoile (French for "star dancer")—the highest rank a dancer can reach at the Paris Opera Ballet. The star-shaped flowers on her dress are the flowers of the yuzu plant, referencing Yuzu Hiiragi, who played a Phantasmic Performance Deck in the ARC-V anime.
  • A concerto is a musical composition for a solo instrument or instruments accompanied by an orchestra, especially one conceived on a relatively large scale.

Diabellstar storyline

  • Snake-Eyes Diabellstar's stat line could mean it's a reference to Magician of Black Chaos, seeing as how the original Diabellstar is to Black Magician.
  • Diabellze is a portmanteau of Diabell- and Beelzebub.
  • Griare is pronounced "GREE-AW-RAY." The word Trio (Sanketsu) here is a Japanese phrase used to refer to "three great people" of a certain historic era, but sanketsu is also a pun on the phrase niketsu ("riding double on a motorcycle").
  • Grand Pile-Up refers to piling up Xyz Materials under a single monster with its effect.
  • Morrigan is named after the Morrígan—a figure from Irish mythology associated with war and fate, especially with foretelling doom, death, or victory in battle, and is often depicted as a crow.

Raika

  • Raika is written with the kanji for bud and calamity, roughly translated as Scourgebud for the alternate translations above.
  • Marikobe is a pun on the Japanese words igakusa (written with similar kanji as Marikobe)—the Japanese name for the Rhynchospora rubra, a member of the sedge family that features a distinctive spherical spikelet at the end of its stem—and sharikōbe (an alternate reading of dokuro—the Japanese word for "skull").
  • Yahazukamikiri is the Japanese name for Uraecha bimaculata, a species of beetle. It is a slender longhorn beetle with a reddish-brown body and a pair of diagonal dark spots on its forewings that resemble arrow notches (with yahazu being the Japanese term for the nock of an arrow). Its name could also be a reference to yahazu-midare—a type of hamon that resembles of sequence of nocks. Since the Raika theme has a yōkai motif, it is also possibly a reference to the Kamikiri (lit. "hair-cutter")—a Japanese yōkai said to secretly cut people's hair on the head.
  • Yoroitokage literally means armored lizard, referring to the armadillo girdled lizard—a diurnal animal with rows of tough spiny scales all over its body.
  • Mushadokuro is a portmanteau of musha (a Japanese word meaning "warrior") and Gashadokuro (lit. "rattling skull")—a yōkai spirit that takes the form of a giant skeleton made of the skulls of people who died in the battlefield.
  • Ogaminushi is a portmanteau of ogamimushi (a dialectal Japanese term for the praying mantis) and ōkannushi (the chief Shinto priest serving the Grand Shrine).
  • Kusarigami is a portmanteau of kusarigama (lit. "chain-sickle")—a traditional Japanese weapon consisting of a sickle attached to a metal chain with a heavy iron weight at the end—and kusarihebi (lit. "chain snake")—the Japanese name for the viper.
  • Daiohga is based on Dorcus bucephalus, a type of stag beetle also known as the great king (daiou) stag beetle in Japanese. Its name also sounds like a portmanteau of daiou and ogre.
  • Raika Off-Season Profusion (Raikaryouran Kuruizaki) is a play on the Japanese idiom hyakkaryōran ("many flowers blooming in profusion").

Tenpai Dragon/Lustrous Phantom

  • This theme is based heavily on Japanese mahjong, also known as riichi mahjong.
  • Tenpai (lit. "heavenly cup" or "sky cup") is a pun on the Japanese-mahjong term tenpai (lit. "listening tile")—meaning to be one tile short of a winning hand (sometimes called "fishing" in English).
  • The Main Deck monsters are based on the dragon tiles (sangenpai, lit. "three fundamental tiles") in mahjong. Their names ending in dora (from doragon or "dragon") is additionaly a pun on mahjong's dora tiles—bonus tiles that add han value to a winning hand.
  • Paidora comes from paipan—the white dragon tile without any markings (also known as haku).
  • Fadora comes from ryuufa (roughly meaning "green wealth")—the official name for the green dragon tile hatsu, which has the Chinese character for "wealth" written on it.
  • Chundora comes from honchun or hóngzhōng (lit. "red center")—the official name for the red dragon tile chun (lit. "medium" or "center"), which has the same character written on it.
  • Bident Dragion is a reference to the card Trident Dragion, with a bident being a two-pronged spear as opposed to the three-pronged trident. Burgeoning Dragon of Lustrous Phantoms (Sangenshōryū) is a pun on the Japanese mahjong term shōsangen (lit. "little three fundamentals")—a yaku (a certain pattern in a mahjong hand) reliant on all three sangenpai (dragon tiles). The hand consists of triplets of two dragons and a pair of the third.
  • Transcend Dragion's title (Sangenchōryū) is in turn based on a chōsangen (lit. "superior three fundamentals")—a non-standard yaku containing all three quads of sangenpai.
  • The Lustrous Phantom Parlor of Brimming Cups (Sakazuki Michiru Sangensō) is a pun on the Japanese term jansō ("mahjong parlor")—a Japanese venue which offers tables for playing mahjong. The two kanji for Brimming Cups (Sakazuki Michiru) can also be read haiman, similar to the Japanese-mahjong term baiman (lit. "double-full")—a win worth 16,000 points (or 24,000 if the dealer wins). This likely refers to this theme's ability to field massive amounts of battle damage in a single Battle Phase.
  • Opening the gate (Kaimen) is a Japanese-mahjong term for determining which tile the dealing of hands starts at the start of the game.

Yubel

  • Hellgrave Squirmer is based on Grave Squirmer, a monster used by Yubel in the GX anime. Its wings and left arm now resemble those of Yubel.
  • Nightmare Throne is based on the throne on the top floor of Yubel's tower in the Spirit World. The artwork is a reference to a scene in which Johann Andersen (possessed by Yubel) leans on the left side of the throne after his Duel against Amon Garam.

Centurion

  • The II in Gargoyle II is read as zwei (the German word for the number two).
  • Arxila (pronounced "ARK-SEE-LAH") is a twist on auxilia (lit. "auxiliaries")–auxiliary troops in the Roman army.

Varmonica

  • Selettrice (pronounced "SELETREE-CHE") is an Italian feminine noun meaning "selector." The title Voice-Picking Princess (Seisenki) is a reference to the card Voice Picker of Angels and Demons - "Varmonica", whose Voice Picker is also pronounced the same (Seisenki), but is written with a different ki kanji meaning "device."
  • Invitare is Italian for "to invite."
  • Disarmonia is Italian for "dissonance."

Light-Road

  • This theme's inclusion in this set could possibly be a reference to its similar name to LIGHT OF DESTRUCTION, the core booster set in which the Light-Road theme first appeared. LIGHT OF DESTRUCTION was also released next after the core booster set PHANTOM DARKNESS, which was the basis for the previous set PHANTOM NIGHTMARE.
  • Veiss is a pun on vice (as in "immoral or wicked behavior") and Weiß (German for "white"). This monster seems to be a Light-Road version of Snoww, Sorceress of the Dark World, who is also connected to the color white and is present in several card artworks together with Light-Road Hunter Ryko.
  • Athena is the Greek goddess of wisdom, especially strategic warfare, the arts, and especially crafts. Her Roman counterpart is Minerva.
  • Aegis is named after an attribute of Zeus and Athena (or their Roman counterparts Jupiter and Minerva) usually represented as a goatskin shield.

Memento

  • Memento Twin Dragon is based on the early-era OCG Fusion Monster Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon.

Miscellaneous

  • Wight Lord (Waitorōdo) is a pun on the Light-Road (Raitorōdo) theme's name, and even has a similar Deck-milling effect. In its artwork, Wight Lord and Skull Dog Marron appear to be wearing armors similar to those of Light-Road Paladin Jain and Light-Road Hunter Ryko, respectively.
  • Golgoil, the Great Demon of Steel is an Illusion Magic remake of the early-era OCG monster Golgoil. Its title comes from the fact the original Golgoil has the words MAJIN OF KOTETSU (roughly meaning "demon of steel" in mixed Japanese and English) engraved on its upper armor. Great Demon of Steel (Kōtetsu no Daimajin) is also a reference to both Great Mazinger (Gurēto Majingā) and Steel Jeeg (Kōtetsu Jīgu), which are two Japanese mecha anime series created by Go Nagai.
  • Moonfang Dragon - Crescent Dragon is a remake of the early-era OCG monster Crescent Dragon (known as Mikazukinoyaiba in the TCG). This monster is meant to symbolize 2024 being a Year of the Dragon.
  • Schlieren (pronounced "SHLEER-EN" and meaning "streaks" in German) are discernible layers in a transparent material that differ from the surrounding material in density or composition. An example of this phenomenon would be the shimerring sunlight on a hot summer day. Its effect is a reference to its flavor text in some of the Game Boy Yu-Gi-Oh! games, where this monster originates from.
  • Nightmare Apprentice has a similar name, stats, and effect as Apprentice Mage of Illusions (known as Apprentice Illusion Magician in the TCG).
  • Dinovader Docus is a pun on dinosaur, invader, and Diplodocus—a huge herbivorous dinosaur of the late Jurassic period, with a long slender neck and tail.
  • Cyclus (Kikurosu) is the Latin form of the Ancient Greek kyklos ("circle" or "ring"). Its title is a play on a fairy ring or fairy circle—a circular area of grass that is darker in color than the surrounding grass due to the growth of certain fungi. They were popularly believed to have been caused by fairies dancing.
  • Chilling Fire (Hieru Hi) is a counterpart to and has a similarly alliterative name (in Japanese) as the card Burning Algae (Moeru Mo).
  • Decanelogue is a twist on Decalogue, another name for the Ten Commandments—a set of biblical principles relating to ethics and worship that play a fundamental role in Judaism and Christianity.
  • Okosama is a pun on okosama (a Japanese polite expression used to refer to children, albeit written in different kanji than this card's name) and oko (Japanese internet slang for being angry). The kanji used in its card name are those for "angry," "young child," and the polite honorific sama.
  • Map Your Way Out (Kyūsureba Tsūzu) is a pun on the Japanese proverb also pronounced the same way, which is basically the equivalent of the English idiom, "Necessity is the mother of invention," meaning that when the need for something becomes essential, you are forced to find ways of getting or achieving it. The last kanji in the card name is the kanji for "map" or "diagram"—this and its artwork are a reference to the anime/manga series Eyeshield 21, where the protagonist would sometimes imagine a mapped-out route through the opposing players that would lead him to a touchdown. Kyū is also the Japanese pronunication for the number nine, referring to its effect of wiping out the opponent's field and Graveyard if a player uses its effect while their opponent controls 9 or more monsters.
  • Blinkout is a pun on "to blink out of existence," link (referring to Link Monsters), and possibly blackout.
  • Metatronius is based on the Ancient Greek metathronios, which can be translated as "one who sits behind the throne." It has been suggested this phrase is the origin of the name Metatron—an archangel in Christian and Jewish folklore.
  • Boot Tracks in the Snow, We Follow Them with Our Steps, One by One They Go (Yukigutsu no / Ato Ou Hitotsu / Mata Hitotsu) is written as a haiku—a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five, traditionally evoking images of the natural world. Its effect also mentions the numbers five, seven, and five in that order.
  • Zoma the Earthbound Ghost is a combination of Dark Bakura's Zoma the Ghost and Call of the Earthbound Spirits. Its effect to inflict damage equal to double the ATK of the attacking monster is a reference to the original depiction of Zoma the Ghost in the anime and manga, which had a similar effect to inflict damage equal to double the ATK of the monster that destroyed it at the end of the Battle Phase.
  • Terrifying Simultaneous Fixed-Point Cannon Equations (Renritsu Hōkoteishiki) is a pun on the Japanese term for simultaneous equations or equation system (renritsu hōteishiki)—in its simplest form, a set of two equations with two variables. The ritsu in renritsu has been replaced with the second kanji from senritsu ("terrifying"), and the hōteishiki meaning "equation" has had the kanji ko ("cannon") spliced in-between, and the teishi part has been replaced for the teishi meaning "fixed-point." Its effect can be expressed as the equation system {2x + y = a; x + y = b}, where 'x' and 'y' stand for the number of Xyz Monsters and Fusion (Yūgō in Japanese) Monsters, respectively.

V Jump March 2024 Edition bonus card

Etymology:
  • This card's name is taken from a line usually said when Resurrection of the Dead was activated in the Duel Monsters anime and manga: "I activate the Magic Card Resurrection of the Dead!" Its artwork is taken from a scene during Yugi's Duel against Pandora in Battle City, in which both he and Pandora use their own Resurrection of the Dead at the same time to revive their Black Magicians from the Graveyard. It being a Quick-Play Magic Card is a reference to the fact all Magic Cards functioned like Quick-Play ones in the manga (and sometimes in the anime).

2024.01.01 21:10 ZvezdaGogolya Name these people (and dogs!)

  1. Henrik and Johanne Nilsen need a first and middle name for a girl. They are a Norwegian couple living in the UK, expecting their first child, a daughter. They want to give her a Norwegian first name that will be pretty or at least easy to say in English. The middle name will be Norwegian too, and it doesn't matter if it's easy in English. They would like it to signify strength.
  2. Linda Baker needs a unisex pen name under which to publish a series of fantasy novels in the US. She's looking for a first name that's as gender neutral as possible to attract male readers. She has Italian, Armenian, and Russian ancestry, and she'd like a surname from one of those cultures. The full name should be memorable, easy to say, and realistic.
  3. Nicole and Tyler Pendergast need first and middle names for twin boys. Nicole is a Christian momfluencer and Tyler runs a successful tractor supply business in the Florida panhandle. Their first four children are named Brody Justice, Bristol Faith, Brylee Grace, and Breonna Mercy. They would like to continue their tradition of first names that start with Br and middle names that are Christian virtues or values.
  4. Laura Marie Reyes needs a new first, middle, and last name for herself after cutting ties with her family and starting over in a new city in southern California. The three names can be Hispanic or English or any combination, but she wants to draw inspiration from 1) her love of nature, 2) her Mexican heritage, and 3) the concept of change, rebirth, new starts, etc.
  5. Patrick works at a dog rescue and needs names for 3 black lab mix puppies (2 boys and 1 girl). They are all black, with a couple white splotches here and there. He wants the three names to be themed. but he doesn't quite know which theme to choose: Classic literature, weather words, Japanese food, or black things.
