2024.06.09 15:24 nopeageddon I-LAND 2 N/A Screentime, Episode 8

I-LAND 2 N/A Screentime, Episode 8
Episode 8, like all elimination episodes, is weird in terms of not giving a lot of new content or storylines. What we do get is a whole lot of screentime to observe, and so potential sneak peek at who production will be favouring for Part 2. I won't be including these visibility rankings in the final count, and I didn't give an Edgic rating for anyone in this episode — comments or reactions in elimination episodes are subjective and seen as positive or negative according to your pre-episode view of a trainee. Honestly, if I tried to give a rating, all of our Top 12 would just get a flat OTTP and that is very boring.
You know what isn't boring though? The Edgic rating and screentime ranks for Episode 2: Signal Song Test, which are now available to view on the spreadsheet here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1H2byWgJ9LxPBO2nFuj2jOWZ5nKEQ-tYBDWaAlx9I8iU/
Congratulations to Jiyoon for getting the coveted CPNN Edgic rating and to Jungeun for being the most visible.
On to episode 8!
The disclaimer: This is for fun and not to be used to cause hate for trainees or mentors, or your fellow I-MATES. The goal is to try and see how the show is trying to frame trainees and shape our, as the viewers, opinion of them. I'm only one person, and will not have caught everything, but do watch episodes multiple times to catch as much as possible.
Previous post showing Position Battle ratings and rankings is here: https://www.reddit.com/mnetiland2/comments/1d8narb/iland_2_na_edgic_and_screentime_episode_6
(In the end I only noted the Top 12. I might go back and look at the eliminated contestants visibility too, to see how much time MNET gave viewers to say goodbye, but for now we just have those going through to Part 2).

Koko had by far the most reaction shots, both before and after she was announced as a survivor. Sujung and Yuju had little before they were announced as survivors, but Sujung bounced back with a vengeance when she was back with the group in I-Land. Juwon put in a strong showing for reaction shots, only to be edged out by Gyuri in the final stretches of this portion of the episode.
Interestingly, Sujung and Yuju also weren't focused on in the walk through the woods to the stage for announcements segment either, while Koko and Jeemin were. I interpreted this in one of two ways; either production is lowering their visibility to try and drop their votes now it's getting into the run up to debut, or production wanted to hide Sujung and Yuju pre-survivor announcement to drum up worry that they hadn't made it. Either way, something I'm keeping an eye on in part 2.
Episode 8 "Introduction" segment
I went back and looked at, roughly, just how long each trainee was on screen for their 'Introduction' segment:
Trainee "Introduction" Segment (MM:SS.MS) "Introduction" Segment (SS.MS rounded)
Koko 01.38.70 83.40
Yoon Jiyoon 01:32.62 79.80
Bang Jeemin 01:32.22 79.20
Kim Gyuri 01:21.66 73.20
Son Juwon 01:21.8 73.20
Ryu Sarang 01:22.04 73.20
Fuko 01:18.80 71.40
Mai 01:17.84 70.80
Nam Yuju 01:15.90 69.60
Choi Jungeun 01:14.01 68.40
Jeong Saebi 01:02.76 61.80
Kim Sujung 00:58.58 59.00
Koko had the longest segment and included a phone call home — the first parent to appear 'in-person' — closely followed by Jiyoon and Jeemin, both of whom are notable for having other idols appear in their segments too (Fuko too!). Sujung and Saebi had the shortest segments by far.
Episode 8 total visibility (averaging introduction segment ranking [longest time = 1, lowest =12] and elimination visibility

https://imgur.com/0ntmnmV
Gyuri is the biggest riser, rocketing back up the visibility rankings after being relegated to the basement known as Ground, while Saebi and Sujung had the biggest drops after their storyline heavy episode 6 showings.
Other notes:
No movement on the Jiyoon vs Jungeun 'rivalry' story this episode, though Jiyoon's introduction segment kind of touched on it as she talked about how she did not have the best mental attitude in part 1 and aims to improve in part 2.
At this point I may as well do an ILLIT or R U Next mention counter because it felt like they were both shown more than Yuju.
Any particular stats you were shocked by?
Did a storyline stick out to you?
Any other stats you'd like to see?

2024.06.09 15:17 ExcellentLychee4485 AITAH for making my partner fly back home to me pretty quickly after the death of his father?

I (26F) and my partner (28M) have been together on and off for 2 years. I am initially from Sydney and he from Perth in Australia but met in Sydney whilst he was there on contract work on and off throughout the 2 years (hence our relationship also being on and off) A year ago, he told me he was leaving for Italy for 2 years in his next contract and asked me to move with him because we were both sick of the on and off-ness. I said yes and after visiting his family in Perth, he moved the very next week in May and I followed 6 months later in November as I had to sort out visas, my rental, quit my job etc. The agreement was that when I moved over he’d be the breadwinner and I’d find a job when I could but I’ve found it extremely hard to find work seeing as I don’t speak the language and didn’t have time to learn. 5 months after I moved, 1 year after he did, which brings us to about 3 weeks ago he received news that he had to go home suddenly as his father was due to pass away within days so without hesitation we booked his flight and he jumped on a 36hour flight cause tht was all we could afford on the one income without impacting the rest of the month. I agreed that it was more important for him to be there than it was for me to be there, so I was okay with staying behind. This is where it gets tricky though, it’s now summer holidays and all the friends that I have made are all on holiday around Europe, his father passed away hours after he touched down and the funeral proceedings were all completed within the first week of his arrival. It’s now been 3 weeks since he left and for the past week he has been saying that he will book a flight back but has failed to do so which is now causing us to fight. His communication is also very poor but I’ve tried not to be smothering as I know he wants to be present with family so these conversations happen pretty much every time I can get him on the phone. My point of view is that I moved my life over, left my job that I loved etc for him and that I just want to know when he will be coming home, his responses are always so blasé and non commital “I’ll be there soon” “when I get there I’ll have another year on my contract and won’t be back home” but they’re evasive and completely miss the point of certainty that I crave. I’ve expressed how lonely it is and has been without him or any of our friends so I spend a lot of time at the gym, reading, learning Italian, watching Netflix or alone with my thoughts and he says sorry but that’s about as far as booking flights goes cause when I express how I’m struggling he just gets angry. His pov is that he is in mourning and wants to be around immediate family and he feels like I’m pressuring him to grieve faster. So AITAH for wanting him to come home?

2024.06.09 15:16 Sin-God Sanguinarch Explaner & Discussion

Hi there! For the jump relevant to this post, click here. It IS a Troyverse Ascension so this is a very powerful type of creature and by coming to this jump you become one. This is an experiment with a new type of discussion post where I talk about big beasties from various settings you can become, and the fun you can have as whatever type of creature you can become.
Have a fun future announcement: I have plans for a jump to a generic world that is secretly in the process of becoming conquered by a Sanguinarch. In my head this jump would include origins for civilians, the resistance, collaborators, and a full origin for a Sanguinarch-spawned vampire. This is a WHOLLY original idea and is very far down the docket of jumps I want to create, but it is one I want to make before the end of the year. So if you like this post, you may like whatever I end up creating at some point in the future whenever I get around to making the jump I just mentioned.

Sanguinarch Basics

Sanguinarchs are one of the five types of Troyverse ascendants alongside Archdemons, Cosmic Gods, Dragon Lords, & Transynths. Three of the four types of beings I mentioned have jumps, all of which have been created by me and are reflections of the original source CYOAs that have been jump-ified and given some QOL things that are relevant to jumpers specifically. Ascendants are beings that tap into the fundamental rules of reality in some way. Archdemons use sins, Cosmic Gods use D&D/Pathfinder style domains, Dragon Lords use draconic fonts of power, and Transynths use technology and science. Sanguinarchs use... Well, Sanguinarchs use Essence.
So at their core Sanguinarchs are supreme undead & necromancers. They are vampires that can feed on entire planets, solar systems, galaxies, and even universes at the very height of somewhat possible attainable power for their kind, becoming cosmopotences (an in-universe term for beings capable of affecting entire universes). Sanguinarchs are also notoriously flexible tricksters with a very nasty grab bag of possible tricks.
The first level of a Sanguinarch's bag of tricks are their foci; a theme around which a sanguinarch focuses themselves granting themselves a particular set of abilities and skills. There are three foci, but any Sanguinarch can take more than one foci, though such sanguinarchs are the rarest members of their kind. The three foci are cultured, dominating, and savage.
The cultured focus is for sanguinarchs who value intelligence, reasoning, non-violence, and diplomacy. It grants any sanguinarch who takes it enhanced charisma, intelligence, persuasiveness, and the ability to conduct rituals which can enact any kind of magic other than magic that transforms bodies or morphs minds on massive scales in hours, scales which would normally take even entire planets of archmages years of constant collaboration to pull off. Sanguinarchs with this focus have enhanced magic when it comes to the body and mind but only magic enhanced to the scale that a normal archmage could realistically have, which is not nothing but it pales in comparison to the rest of their magical kit.
Dominating focused sanguinarchs value control over all things and have the ability to enslave people within a few miles of them, but if they have the right major sanguine power then they can dominate everyone in a galaxy around them. These servitors are 100% loyal to you and would do anything you command. They also passively generate essence for you, giving you oath based essence (unless you've shunned the oath source) which is the only way that mind controlling someone can generate oath based essence, as normally such a font stems from oaths that are willingly sworn rather than ones that stem from supernatural influence.
The final focus is the savage focus. This is a purely physical focus and it is tremendously powerful, boosting your speed to galactic scale and giving you unbelievable power and endurance.
The foci can also be mixed and matched, in the sense that buying one does not lock you out of the other two.
Going to the next facet of the sanguinarch's toolkit, let's talk about essence. Essence is a substance that sanguinarchs can absorb and make use of, which is generated by all sorts of connections (this term is being used in a conceptual, esoteric sense here); interactions which result in blood being drawn, the devouring of one's soul, consensual sex between adults, oaths that are willingly sworn ("willingly" here does include oaths sworn under duress but not under the influence of supernatural powers), and a sanguinarch's own dominion (Remember this word, we'll circle back to it). Essence is a substance that is generated by ALL instances of the things I mentioned, blood, souls, pleasure, and oaths, but only a sanguinarch can absorb and use the substance. Sanguinarchs naturally absorb any essence created by their own actions, and can maximize the five sources that generate essence up above, which allows them to passively absorb the essence generated by their personalized types of vampiric spawn (another thing we'll get too later in this post) in the cases of blood, souls, and pleasure (provided the type of vampire in question feeds on it), and then if oaths are sworn to your vampires, and in the case of maximizing the dominion source of essence you make it easier to add places to your dominion rather than increasing how much essence the dominion feeds you.
Essence can be spent in one of three ways; it can empower an active ability (such as a spell you're about to cast), it can buff a passive trait (such as boosting your durability), and finally it can emulate a one-off instance of any kind of effect you want. This last ability takes some explaining, but a sanguinarch can spend their essence (which is a resource that once spent is gone, though it is incredibly easy to gain more) to emulate any kind of power on virtually any scale, with more impressive powers on larger scales costing fortunes in essence. A sanguinarch with this ability can do virtually anything provided they are ready to spend the right amount of essence. This ability makes sanguinarchs extremely unpredictable and dangerous. Essence MUST be spent to use this ability, even if emulating an ability you've already emulated in the past.
Now let's talk about the more direct powers & the potent servants of sanguinarchs; vampires.

Sanguinarch's Active Abilities & Vampiric Spawn

There are two types of active powers that are uniquely part of a sanguinarch's power set; major sanguine powers, and also Dominion perks.
Major Sanguine powers are powers that require no essence and are extremely simple for the vampire-like monsters to use. There are about 17 of these abilities and each of them is worth understanding. More details on each of these abilities can be found in the jump or in the source document.
Empowerment boosts your effectiveness with essence. Shadowblank makes you stunningly difficult to detect and if you are willing to spend the essence can be used on your dominion, but when used on your dominion it is somewhat more detectable than you since if someone enters the dominion they can see it. Darkness allows you and your forces to get stronger in darkness and in places attuned to darkness. Eclipse lets you shroud a place in darkness. Phylacktery is your respawn mechanic. Monstrous Command lets you command animals and monsters of all kinds. Mindlink is stunningly powerful telepathic communication. Hypnosis is a brutally powerful form of mind control dependent on making eye contact with someone but if you hit them with it you can give almost any sort of command that you can imagine so long as it's not permanent and you can stack commands on somebody. Puppetmaster lets you seize control of all sorts of moving things and people, moving them in ways that are pleasing to you, almost like straight up telekinesis. Spectral Form gives you conditional intangibility (intangible to things like enemy strikes but tangible when you want to punch someone or otherwise interact with something), and Regeneration lets you recover from virtually sort of damage instantly, unless said damage is inflicted by a being wildly stronger than you.
Trueshifting is pretty incredible shapeshifting, power emulation, and cloning. Mirrorwalk is, for all intents and purposes, instant teleportation from any one mirror to any other mirror, at least in the local multiverse. Mass Telekinesis is ridiculously powerful telekinetic abilities able to hold even quintillions of different things in space at once, even if each individual thing has the same mass of mountains. Enthrall lets you turn people into thralls, immortal, devoted supernatural servants. all of whom are enhanced sources of essence in every way, their blood, souls, and pleasure giving you more essence, as well as their oaths generating more essence over time. Absorption lets you absorb skills, knowledge, and abilities from those you get essence from, be it you targeting a teacher, or your spawn targeting a local king, and by opting to gain a bit less essence then you'd otherwise gain you can instead just copy this stuff rather than taking it from the people you target with this power. Dark brides are special types of servants you can create that are wholly bonded to you, either creating someone from nothing or turning a living person into a dark bride so long as they consent to it. Dark brides can do whatever you can as a sanguinarch but each dark bride costs more than the last with the first being free.
Let's talk about dominions. A sanguinarch's dominion is not just territory that is under their control, but a patch of space that has been so thoroughly conquered by them that the land itself recognizes their control and lordship. This happens when a significant amount of essence has been gathered and absorbed by a single sanguinarch in one continuous area (how much essence is required depends in part on the size of the space in question), which eventually renders the space vulnerable to powerful dark rituals which the sanguinarch and their homies can perform over the course of several days. When these rituals are completed the patch of space becomes a part of their dominion, and a sanguinarch's dominion feeds them essence every second, with bigger dominion's feeding them more essence. A dominion is permanently under the influence of a sanguinarch who claims it, and in the Troyverse there are plenty of places that can be under the thumb of other sanguinarch since other sanguinarchs exist but once you jump OUT of the Troyverse... Well, there's a LOT of space in all but the smallest-setting-wise jumps for you to turn into your turf. There are a total of nine perks that specifically affect a sanguinarch's dominion, bolstering it in various ways. Let's talk about them!
Sentinals are a type of guardian that, if the perk is purchased, are generated by the dominion itself (and created by it whenever you add space to your dominion, or with the right perk, whenever it sufficiently expands) and have ultra-human (planet-level) physiques as well as some vampire-like abilities. These guardians protect your dominion but cannot leave it, and if they are somehow destroyed (and it'd take a being on par with or beyond Superman to do this so it IS possible but in a lot of settings it's not especially likely) your dominion will resurrect them over the course of a few days unless you spend some essence to rebuild them. They are also completely immune to mind control or being puppeted, and are aware of everything in your dominion.
Many dominion perks are handy because they make your dominion more suitable to your minions and you in some way and pliant climate is one such perk. PC begins with a one time effect that makes a new patch of dominion more hospitable to your minions, altering reality to do something like destroying radiation that might destroy sufficiently weak lifeforms or creating landmasses for your servants to walk on, and after that effect has occurred you can personally warp reality to alter the climate in your dominion even weaponizing weather against invaders or other enemies.
Labyrinth is a perk that enhances your dominion's natural and default resistance to enemy reality warping (to such an extent that universe-scale reality warpers would struggle to use reality warping in your space), and also causes the local geography to warp and twist in reality-defying ways that make it virtually impossible for non-ascendants to escape without your permission.
Shroud is a perk that nullifies any default weaknesses you or your spawn may have to traditional anti-vampire stuff (sanguinarchs do not have such weaknesses by default though a drawback can give you some) such as sunlight, garlic, silver, or fire, so long as you or your spawn are in your dominion. If you opted to allow your spawn to be weak to stuff, particularly sunlight, this can be an incredibly handy perk to have and can give even the most disloyal vampires powerful reasons to aid you in expanding your dominion.
Obedient architecture lets you turn raw materials into grand structures instantly, so long as the required reality warping occurs in your dominion.
Gluttonous enhances how much essence you get when you are in your dominion, but this particular perk is a bit odd. The way this perk works is by enhancing ALL feeding you do on essence so long as you are in the confines of your dominion. Very importantly this enhances the potency of the dominion's passive essence production, but also bolsters every other source of essence, and can be very powerful if you strive to maximize essence production. This can also blend very powerfully with another ability we'll mention in a second.
Shadow Paths is a perk that ties together all patches of dominion in a jump (for jumper-sanguinarchs, this limitation doesn't exist for pure CYOA sanguinarchs). What this means is that your servants and those you give permission too can step into one patch of dominion and immediately enter another patch located elsewhere, even if doing so entails them stepping somewhere in North Carolina and suddenly appearing in Alaska, or on the moon. This is one of the best forms of teleportation in the Troyverse that is able to be used by ascendants, but requires the powerful setup needed to turn a place into a patch of dominion in the first place, as opposed to requiring the advanced technology other ascendants can use to swiftly and stealthy teleport en-masse. One handy aspect of this power is that it is only accessible to those you permit and only if they are loyal to you; if a vampire you converted into a vampire is somehow under enemy control they cannot use these paths at all. This is a neat defensive measure that prevents this ability from being used against you. The paths automatically appear whenever you add a patch to your dominion, connecting any and all such spaces.
Power Suppression is a very handy ability that shuts down enemy/non-allied powers so long as they are in your dominion, which if fused with something like labyrinth can be incredibly devastating. How strong this perk is depends on how much you invest in it, but frankly even the first tier makes entire settings (even ones with powered beings) unable to use their powers against your will, as a LOT of settings do not have any beings that are planet-scale.
Eminent Domain is a stunningly powerful perk that enhances your dominion in every respect. Firstly it makes it so that any abilities you use remotely do not suffer any diminishment (all ascendants are capable of using their ascendant abilities at incredible ranges so long as the area they are using their powers in are sufficiently under their influence in some way, but normally such abilities suffer some level of weakened effectiveness due to distance). This also radically bolsters your awareness of what occurs in your dominion, granting you pseudo-omniscience within the strict confines of your dominion. Lastly, and most importantly, this stunningly powerful perk allows your patches of dominion to expand themselves!
Normally a patch of dominion is static in the sense that it does not expand sans external intervention (Basically a patch of dominion's size and dimensions are determined at the moment a place is converted and normally stays that way forever). With ED this is changed and instead patches of dominion slowly expand with how quickly they expand being determined by whether or not you maximized the dominion essence source (and a requirement that feedings occur in the patch of dominion in question). Think of it this way; it's easier for a sanguinarch who has patches of dominions in banks where vampire bankers get people to swear oaths via bank loans to watch their patches expand than a sanguinarch whose patches are in barren deserts to watch their patches expand. That's not to say it can't be done, the desert-owning sanguinarch can turn serial killers into vampires, have them take their victims to the dominion patches and feed on them in there, but that IS more complex than the setup for the banking sanguinarch I also mentioned.
Fully understanding and maximizing the power of the dominion is difficult but it's worth it. A sanguinarch with a few perks is an impressively powerful lord of any space they turn into their dominions, and a sanguinarch with ED can slowly and cautiously watch their dominion expand without having to do the rituals. It's dope.
Now let's talk about vampric spawn! I'm not gonna go over every facet of this, as there's a lot of individual options that'd need to be discussed. but vampiric spawn are a SPECIFIC type of vampire created by a sanguinarch. A sanguinarch can turn anyone in the same planet into a vampire spawn, and even gods are not immune to this transformation, neither are animals, demons, or any supernatural beings unless they are on par with an ascendant themselves. It's also stunningly difficult to resist this transformation, so someone can do something like catch Superman off guard and turn him into one of your spawn.
There are a number of reasons why sanguinarchs want vampiric spawn, but for a lot of sanguinarchs vampiric spawn will be best viewed as a way to speed up one's ability to gather essence. When deciding your builds you have three options when it comes to all five sources of essence; you can "shun" them, you can leave them unaltered, or you can maximize them. "Shunning" a source means you never get essence from it (but this does not make them useless, as dominions can get still benefit from dominion perks AND turning an area into a dominion can stop other sanguinarchs from doing so, though this would only be useful in Troyverse jumps), leaving it alone means you can get essence from instances of the source caused by you and you alone, and maximizing the source means that any actions that are relevant to the source that your spawn cause (that in the case of blood, pleasure, and souls they can FEED on) generates essence for you (which is relevant both for the purposes of the absorption sanguine major power and for the purposes of eventually creating new patches of dominion). This means that vampiric spawn are more than handy servants, they can be vital expanders of your empire.
A sanguinarch can customize vampiric spawn they create in a number of ways by purchasing options in the vampiric spawn customization section of the jump doc. If a sanguinarch went bonkers on this section their maxed out vampires would be fucking stacked with modifiers like enhanced beauty, an ability to grow stronger from feeding (and it being a carving rather than a necessity), fanatical loyalty to you, the ability to mesmerize people, fly, turn into mist, and shapeshift, as well as physiques that are 100 times the peak for their species. These vampires would be tremendously powerful servants, and could make for incredible followers.

Sanguinarch Thoughts & Musings

Now that we've spent a beat discussing the facets of sanguinarch stuff that will persist across jumps, let's talk a bit about thoughts & musings related to sanguinarchs!
Sanguinarchs are hands down the best territory-type ascendants. Their ability to conquer a place so thoroughly that they turn it into their dominion is fucking wild given what dominion perks can do to a place, and a properly stealthy sanguinarch can do it before people even realize that something fucky is going on. Even in modern police states sanguinarchs with the right builds can be masters of subtlety and stealth, or can just blitz a place so fast that no one has a chance to resist (this is especially true for dominating sanguinarchs).
I really like the versatility and flexibility of sanguinarchs, as the emulate function of essence and stuff like shadowblank and mindlink are so fantastically potent that they are just nightmarishly powerful in the right hands.
A sanguinarch that opts to not be watered down and instead has the full functionality of a CYOA sanguinarch rather than my suggested edits to make the power of a sanguinarch more approachable can enter a setting and turn everyone in their home world into a vampire in an instant, or can dominate entire communities in a second, In some respects this is just beyond what other ascendants can do (though all ascendants can buy greater megapowers which can allow other ascendants to emulate a sanguinarch with the right focus). Manifold ascendants that are sanguinarchs AND other things can instantly create cults to themselves and, assuming they are an archdemon, dragon lord, or cosmic god, immediately begin to gain power from the worship power source.
As a stealth-type jumper person I really really like the potency of a sanguinarch's many abilities that either revolve around stealth or allow for it, with powers like eclipse and shadowblank being perennial favorites of mine. I also love that there are powers that revolve around knowing more than others and hiding in the dark, giving boosts to your other powers if you are just smarter than your foes or if you are a sneaky sneak. One fascinating aspect of the darkness power is how it can synergize with absorption, since you can drain knowledge from foes with strikes, which makes your other abilities stronger against them.
Here are some fun ideas for interesting targets to turn into vampiric spawn or otherwise use in a story with a jumper sanguinarch.
A serial killer who will now eagerly dedicate their kills to you, and who is happy to target anyone you wish to see killed.
A cop who needs to find the people who kidnapped her brother. Now armed with vampiric powers she will investigate her brother's kidnapping with brutal efficiency.
A priest having a crisis of faith whose mind is exceptionally loud one night when you are scanning nearby minds. Now he worships you rather than whatever god he once believed in.
A high school queen bee who is afraid of the future or growing old and is eagerly willing to cavort with dark forces once she realizes they are real and willing to help her, for a price. This one can be really fun if you turn her friend into a vampiric spawn and dangle the prospect in front of her but instead use some of your abilities to do stuff like enhance her but not give her the immortality she craves.
A promising athlete who was critically injured and is desperate to recover and rebuild their career.
A politician who craves more and more power, and is happy to make dark deals.
A terminally ill child with parents who are desperate to see them get better, and who will pay any price if it means their child has a miracle. And to keep paying for their child's continued health.
Sanguinarchs CAN be brutal overlords who conquer places with force, and that can be a lot of fun given how incredibly powerful the savage focus is (and how much scarier it can be with stuff like spectral form and regeneration). Sanguinarchs can also be shadowy deal makers who have fun putting things in place and watching how they move once they are positioned in front of each other.
There are some very inventive ways for a sanguinarch to get essence. One of my favorites is to create vampires that are, for all intents and purposes, succubi and have them run brothels where they sell themselves at incredibly low prices and have them feast on horny peeps. Another way I really like is to create charisma based vampires and turn banks into dens for my vampirism, or turn places like lending agencies into hives of my vampires.
Certain places are also very likely to be targeted by me whenever I create sanguinarchs (be they CYOA or jump sanguinarchs); hospitals and prisons. My sanguinarchs are invariably predatory assholes and they recognize how desperate people can be after a difficult doctor's visit, and they also see prisons as places that are incredibly easy to turn into patches of their dominion, whether it's turning desperate and scared prisoners into vampires or giving prison guards and staff the power to more easily and safely corral the prisoners.

Conclusion

I honestly just really like sanguinarchs. They have such fun and varied power sets, and can dramatically expand their toolkits with stuff like Absorption and the emulate function of their ability to manipulate essence. Sanguinarchs and Transynths are the oddest of the ascendants, but I have such fun with both of their power sets and it can be so rad to see what sort of mischief a sanguinarch jumper can get up too while turning a place into a part of their dominion.
I hope this overview helps you think more keenly about sanguinarchs and their eerie meshes of abilities. If you've ever run a sanguinarch jumper, or have plans to do so I'd love to hear all about them!

2024.06.09 15:14 smiley17111711 I disagree with the argument that the frame of reference of a light ray is "meaningless"

Lately, I've seen a lot of people making the argument that one cannot assign a valid frame of reference to the path of a ray of light. It is often claimed that it is "meaningless". I want to explain why I disagree with this idea. But if I am wrong, I would like to know where my mistake is.
The first argument I often encounter is that proposing such a frame contradicts a postulate that was accepted implicitly, when speaking of any frame of reference, namely Einstein's postulate that c is the same for all observers. They argue that in such a frame, by definition, the speed of light would be zero. And so it would contradict the postulate we've already accepted.
There are a number of problems with that argument. The first is the logical error. We are free to begin our examination without Einstein's postulate. This is a subtlety that is neglected. Most sets of postulates work this way. For example, in Euclid's Geometry, there are alternative postulates that are usually taught to modern students, instead of his own. But you can start with either set and arrive at the other. It is no different in this case. We can begin by considering such a frame and then consider what would imply, and we might later introduce Einstein's postulate, or we might arrive at it from our approach, or we might have no need for it. That is just the rules of logic, alone- we have said nothing yet about the physics of it.
The second problem is that this argument is misleading- it is speaking of something different than what is actually proposed. The speed of light, per se, is different than the relative velocity of the frame proposed. The speed of light is just a scalar magnitude. The second is a particular vector assigned to a coordinate axis. And so there is no contradiction in proposing that one of these is one number, and the other is something else. They are two different things.
Third, the argument pretends that the proposed frame is coincident with all light in all directions, in all places. That is obviously not what is proposed. Indeed, there could be no such frame. It is only proposed to be coincident with one ray.
If we try to more specify more precisely what we mean, it is fairly obvious that the common sense meaning of such a frame is a frame that is coincident with a particular crest or a particular trough of the radiation, in one direction. In other words, a frame in which the dynamic field of the radiation would appear to be a static electric field that varied in space.
Those who argue that in such a frame the speed of light would be zero are not correct. The speed of light would be c in such a frame. But because the field would be a static field in such a frame, there would be no light to observe.
But if we consider any other path of light, of any other light ray, then of course, it would appear as a dynamic field, and it would still appear to propagate at c, consistent with Einstein's postulate, even in the frame we proposed. Proceeding in that fashion, we notice that we actually stopped short of introducing Einstein's postulate. There was no need. But when we do introduce it, we see that it will pose no contradiction at all.
To see this fact even better, consider the frame which is just a tiny bit slower than the light. My opponents make no objection to such a frame. In such a frame, the same light appears as a dynamic field, but one that changes very slowly. Redshifted, in other words.
But that redshift does not imply that the speed of light is any slower in such a frame. It merely means that the wavelength is longer. Changes in the field still propagate at the same speed.
So when we consider the frame that is truly coincident with the light, there is no abrupt transition from an acceptable frame of reference to an impossible frame. Rather, it is a smooth transition from a rapidly varying dynamic field to a field that is varying so slowly it is a static field. In both cases, the speed of light is still c. But the wavelength differs, as it should.
This is the part where the second argument gets dragged out. My opponents argue that they have a certain well established ratio that they apply, when they transform from one frame to another. They argue that this ratio would be mathematically undefined if they attempted to apply it between the frame of the light source and this proposed frame coincident with the light ray.
This argument is perhaps a little bit stronger, but it is still very weak. First, it assumes that when human math fails to describe nature, that nature must therefore be confined to the realms that human math can describe. That is obviously untrue. Human math fails all the time, and yet nature persists, all the same. Either she is waiting for our math to catch up with her cleverness, or there is some other tool that must be applied, or possibly, there is no tool that could ever describe her completely. All of those are possibilities. And there are countless other examples in which our math encounters a stumbling block that is no hindrance to nature.
Second, the argument makes a basic misunderstanding about undefined functions and how they are dealt with mathematically. Not every undefined value is unmanageable. As an obvious example from geometry, consider the circle. The circle has a tangent line at every point. But if you attempt to define a tangent function in Cartesian coordinates, you will inevitable encounter a place where the function is mathematically undefined. But does that imply that a vertical line is undefined? Of course not. It's defined as a vertical line. The problem of the undefined tangent function did not exist for ancient geometers, because they did not define a coordinate plane. And even if one insists on using a coordinate plane, one can easily change it to avoid the undefined values at certain place, by changing coordinates and leaving them undefined at others. So an undefined ratio, alone, is not enough reason to conclude that the frame we have proposed is "meaningless", any more than the undefined values of the tangent function would be reason to conclude that a vertical line is "meaningless".
Often, my opponents point out the well established fact that the limit of a function as it approaches a value is not necessarily the value of the function at that value. This is another distraction. It is true that a math major who went around saying that the limit was equal to the value would flunk out of math class. But it has very little to do with the physics problem.
Mostly because there are also functions in which the limit actually does equal the value of the function at that point, and in fact, this is one such example. That is, if we interpret gamma as infinity in our example, we obtain the correct results. Frequencies don't merely approach zero- they really are zero. Wavelengths don't merely approach infinity- they really are infinite. And the clock at the light source does not merely get slower- the pendulum actually stops swinging, for an observer in this frame. That is, the limit is also the value.
To see this more convincingly, consider a frame that is just slightly faster than the light. This will probably provoke my opponents even more. But if you like, consider the frame of the real particles in water around a nuclear reactor, in which the speed of particles can sometimes exceed the speed of the radiant light. In truth, there is no need for that contrivance, but if it assuages your objection, feel free to consider it.
What an observer in such a frame would see would be just like the observation in the frame that was just a little slower than the light- the light would be strongly redshifted. But the order of it would be reversed. In other words, if the light was from a movie projector, the movie would appear to run backwards.
Considering such a frame, it is obvious that there is a smooth transition here, from the frame just slightly slower than the light, to the frame just slightly faster than the light. Just as there is a smooth transition from a tangent line on the top of the circle to a tangent line on the bottom of the circle. At no point does the tangent line cease to exist. The same thing happens to frequencies and wavelengths in these frames we are considering. Frequencies would transition smoothly from a positive value, to zero, to a negative value, with no discontinuity. The only problem arises when we insist on using certain functions that have undefined values. But simply sticking with the geometry of it, no such problem arises.
Last, there is the error that is made when my opponents insist that they must be able to transform between coordinate systems. There is no fundamental law of physics that says you have to be able to do that. And even if one insists on being able to do so, it doesn't tell us which one do the two frames is the one to throw out, and which one to keep.
For me, this is the strongest argument against my opponent's view. Even if they insist that all frames must be reconcilable with a transformation (untrue) and that the proposed frame is irreconcilable with that of the light source (also untrue), they will still have to admit that nothing gives them any reason why one of those frames is superior to the other. They are merely assuming they couldn't possibly toss out the frame of the light source. But that's not justified. They could just as easily insist they couldn't toss out the frame of the light. If you begin with the perspective of the light, you arrive at a reciprocal transform that is also undefined for the frame of the light source. But that doesn't make either of them meaningless, for the reasons already given.
I expect some hate for saying this. But if I am wrong, I need to hear it.

The Untold Story of the Head of St. John the Baptist
https://preview.redd.it/ug8cv1d5pj5d1.png?width=327&format=png&auto=webp&s=d7474c5779c4af5eb89bcb0a56d892d7aee93367
Holy Scripture tells us that after St. John the Baptist was beheaded, the impious Herodias forbade the prophet’s head to be buried together with his body. Instead, she desecrated the honorable head and buried it near her palace. The saint’s disciples had secretly taken their teacher’s body and buried it. The wife of King Herod’s steward knew where Herodias had buried St. John’s head, and she decided to rebury it on the Mount of Olives, on one of Herod’s estates.[1]
When word reached the royal palace about Jesus’ preaching and miracles, Herod went with his wife Herodias to see if John the Baptist’s head was still in the place they had left it. When they did not find it there, they began to think that Jesus Christ was John the Baptist resurrected. The Gospels witness to this error of theirs (cf. Mt. 14:2).
Jerusalem. The First Uncovering of the Head of St. John the Baptist.
May years later, during the reign of Equal-to-the-Apostles Emperor Constantine, his mother, St. Helen, began restoring the holy places of Jerusalem. Many pilgrims streamed into Jerusalem, amongst whom where two monks from the East, wishing to venerate the Lord’s Honorable Cross and Holy Sepulcher. St. John the Baptist entrusted these two pilgrims to discover his head. We only know that he appeared to them in a dream; and that after finding the head in the place he showed them, they decided to return to their native city. However, God’s will determined otherwise. Along the road, they met a poor potter from the Syrian town of Emesa (modern-day Homs), whose poverty had forced him to seek work in a neighboring country. Having found a co-traveler, the monks either out of laziness or carelessness entrusted him with carrying the sack containing the relic. As he was carrying it, St. John the Baptist appeared to him and told him to forget the careless monks and run away from them, taking the sack they had given him.
For the sake of the precious head of St. John the Baptist, the Lord blessed the potter’s house with an abundance of goods. The potter lived his whole life remembering his Benefactor, giving alms generously. Not long before his death he gave the precious head to his sister, commanding her to pass it on to other God-fearing, virtuous Christians.
The saint’s head was passed along from one person to the next, and came into the hands of one Hieromonk Eustacius, who sided with the Arian heresy. Sick people who came to him received healing, not knowing that it was due not to Eustacius’s false piety, but to the grace coming from the hidden head. Soon Eustacius’s ruse was exposed, and he was banished from Emesa. A monastery grew around the cave where the hieromonk had lived and in which the head of St. John the Baptist was buried.
Emesa and Constantinople. The Second and Third Finding of the Precious Head.
After many years, the head of St. John the Baptist was uncovered a second time. We know about this from a description by Archimandrite Marcellus of the monastery in Emesa, as well as from the life of St. Matrona (†492, commemorated November 9/22), written by St. Simeon Metraphrastes. According to the first description, the head was discovered on February 18, 452. A week later, Bishop Uranius of Emesa established its veneration, and on February 26 of the same year, it was translated to the newly-built church dedicated to St. John. These events are celebrated on February 24/March 8, along with the commemoration of the First Finding of the Precious Head.
After some time, the head of St. John the Forerunner was translated to Constantinople, where it was located up to the time of the iconoclasts. Pious Christians who left Constantinople secretly took the head of St. John the Baptist with them, and then hid it in Comana (near Sukhumi, Abkhazia), the city where St. John Chrysostom died in exile (407). After the Seventh Ecumenical Council (787), which reestablished the veneration of icons, the head of St. John the Baptist was returned to the Byzantine capital in around the year 850. The Church commemorates this event on May 25/June 7 as the Third Finding of the Precious Head of St. John the Baptist.
The Fourth Crusade and travel to the West.
Ordinarily, the Orthodox history of the finding of the head of St. John the Baptist ends with the Third Finding. This is due to the fact that its later history is bound up with the Catholic West. If we look at the Lives of the Saints written in the Menaon of St. Dimitry of Rostov, we find a citation in small print, often overlooked by readers, at the end of story of the Finding of the Forerunner’s Head. However, after unexpectedly discovering the head of St. John the Baptist in France and then returning home to Russia, this citation became a real revelation for us. It is this next “finding” of the head of St. John the Baptist that we would like to write about below.
Thus, we read in this citation that after 850, part of the head of St. John the Baptist came to be located in the Podromos Monastery in Petra, and the other part in the Forerunner Monastery of the Studion. The upper part of the head was seen there by the pilgrim Antony in 1200. Nevertheless, in 1204 it was taken by crusaders to Amiens in northern France. Besides that, the citation shows three other locations of pieces of the head: the Athonite monastery Dionysiou, the Ugro-Wallachian monastery of Kalua, and the Church of Pope Sylvester in Rome, where a piece was taken from Amiens.
The face of St. John the Baptist, in the Cathedral of Our Lady in Amiens.
The history of the Baptist’s head’s appearance in France differs little from the history of many other great Christian relics.
On April 13, 1204, during the Fourth Crusade, an army of knights from Western Europe seized the capital of the Roman Empire—Constantinople. The city was looted and decimated.
As Western tradition has it, Canon Wallon de Sarton from Picquigny found a case in one of the ruined palaces that contained a silver plate. On it, under a glass covering, were the hidden remains of a human face, missing only the lower jaw. Over the left brow could be seen a small perforation, most likely made by a knife strike.
On the plate the canon discovered an inscription in Greek confirming that it contained the relics of St. John the Forerunner. Furthermore, the perforation over the brow corresponded with the event recorded by St. Jerome. According to his testimony, Heriodias in a fit of rage struck a blow with a knife to the saint’s severed head.
The Cathedral of Our Lady in Amiens (Notre Dame d’Amiens).
Wallon de Sarton decided to take the head of the Holy Forerunner to Picardy, in northern France.
On December 17, 1206, on the third Sunday of the Nativity fast, the Catholic bishop of the town of Amiens, Richard de Gerberoy, solemnly met the relics of St. John the Baptist at the town gates. Probably the bishop was sure of the relic’s authenticity—something easier to ascertain in those days, as they say, “by fresh tracks”. The veneration of the head of St. John the Baptist in Amiens and all of Picardy begins from that time.
In 1220, the bishop of Amiens placed the cornerstone in the foundation of a new cathedral, which after many reconstructions would later become the most magnificent Gothic edifice in Europe. The facial section of the head of the St. John the Baptist, the city’s major holy shrine, was transferred to this new cathedral.
Eventually, Amiens became a place of pilgrimage not only for simple Christians, but also for French kings, princes and princesses. The first King to come and venerate the head in 1264 was Louis IX, called “the Holy”. After him came his son, Phillip III the Brave, then Charles VI, and Charles VII, who donated large sums for the relic’s adornment.
The Church of the Forerunner in Rome (Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano).
In 1604, Pope Clement VIII of Rome, wishing to enrich the Church of the Forerunner in Rome (Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano), requested a piece of St. John’s relics from the canon of Amiens.
Saving of the head from the outrages of the French revolution.
After the revolution in 1789, inventory was made of all Church property and relics were confiscated.
The reliquary containing the head of the Holy Forerunner remained in the cathedral until November, 1793, when it was demanded by representatives of the Convention. They stripped from it everything of material value, and ordered that the relics be taken to the cemetery. However, the revolutionary command was not fulfilled. After they left the city, the city’s mayor, Louis-Alexandre Lescouve, secretly and under fear of death returned to the reliquary and took the relics to his own home. Thus was the sacred shrine preserved. Several years later, the former mayor gave the relic to Abbot Lejeune. Once the revolutionary persecutions had ended, the head of St. John the Baptist was returned to the cathedral in Amiens in 1816, where it remains to this day.
At the end of the nineteenth century, historical science, not without the participation of ecclesiastical figures, determined that there had been many instances of false relics during the Middle Ages. In an atmosphere of general mistrust, veneration of the Amiens shrine eventually began to wane.
The head of St. John the Baptist today.
In the mid-twentieth century, specifically in 1958, there was a spark of renewed interest in the relics of St. John the Baptist. The rector of the Amiens cathedral reported to the ecclesiastical authorities that in eastern France, in Verdun, was what was presumed to be the lower jaw of St. John the Baptist. He wanted to rejoin the two parts. With the blessing of the bishop of Amiens, a commission of qualified medical experts was formed.
The relics were investigated for several months, in two stages—the first in Amiens, the second in Paris. After the work was completed, the commission’s findings were gathered into a document, signed by the members. In the first chapter of the document, which covers the research performed in Amiens, the following conclusions were made:
  • Comparison of the subject called “of Verdun” with the subject from Amiens disclosed their anatomical differences, confirming without a doubt that they are of differing origins.
  • From the chronological point of view, the subject called “of Verdun” is not as ancient as the Amiens subject. It is similar in form and weight to “bones of the Middle Ages”.
  • The facial part, called the head of St. John the Baptist from Amiens, is a very ancient object—more ancient than “bones of the Middle Ages”. On the other hand, it is younger than human bones of the Mesolithic era—which allows us to date it at between 500 BC and 1000 AD.
  • The man’s age could not be determined precisely due to the absence of teeth. But based upon the fact that the alveolar [tooth] sockets are fully developed and are slightly worn at the edges, it can be supposed that the man was an adult (between 25 and 40 years old).
  • General characteristics of the head in the form of inadequate elements can be determined, but with great permissible variation. The facial type is Caucasoid (that is, not Negroid or Mongoloid). The small measurements of the subject from Amiens and the development of the lower eye sockets lead to the supposition that it could correspond to a racial type called “Mediterranean” (a type to which modern Bedouins belong).
Here ends the modern chronicle of the head of St. John the Baptist. Unfortunately, few of the faithful have recourse to the help of such a lamp of grace as the precious head of St. John the Baptist, “the first among martyrs in grace”.[2] Many Orthodox Christians come to France, but not all of them know how many holy relics there are still on French soil despite the outrages committed against them during the French Revolution and subsequent forgetfulness of France’s Christian past.
Joyfully, during recent years more and more Orthodox pilgrims are travelling to Amiens. Now, with the help of the Pilgrimage Center of the diocese of Korsun (of the Moscow Patriarchate, based in Paris) Orthodox molebens and even Divine Liturgies are now being served before the head of St. John the Baptist.
Priest Maxim Massalitin
[1] The Ascension Convent (Russian Orthodox Church Abroad) is now located on this site, and a church dedicated to the Forerunner stands over it. --Ed.
[2] St. John the Baptist is called “the first among martyrs in grace” in the final prayer of the canon of supplication to him.

2024.06.09 15:10 sameed_a how to improve adaptability with design thinking?

As an eager newbie in the design team, I was initially overwhelmed by the fast-paced environment and constant changes. In my first project, I was assigned to a team working on a new product design. It was there I encountered the concept of design thinking and adaptability for the first time.
The project was to revamp a product that had seen dwindling sales, and we were all excited about it. The initial concept seemed brilliant, with innovative features and an eye-catching design. However, the first week of user testing brought back disheartening feedback; users found navigating our product frustrating and less intuitive than we'd hoped. I remember the blow this was to the team, a real punch to the gut. Our wonderful design was being literally crumpled up and tossed into a metaphoric bin.
But our team lead, Martha, wasn't about to let us wallow in self-pity. "It's just a pivot," she said, encouraging us to see this as an opportunity for adaptability. She introduced us to the OODA loop concept, which stands for Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act, a mental model used by fighter pilots.
We took a step back, observed the user feedback, oriented ourselves to it, decided on alternative approaches, and acted by implementing changes. We did this over and over again, improving our concept based on the user feedback. It was a grueling process, but it worked. The product was not only accepted by the users but was also hailed as one of the most innovative designs of the year.
This experience taught me the importance of adaptability in design thinking. Being able to change course and adjust to feedback is crucial in creating great designs. We need to view feedback, not as criticism, but as a tool of improvement. Remember, a design is only good if it works for the people it's intended for.
P.S. Okay, I lied. I was never part of a design team that transformed a product like that. Or named Martha. But wouldn't it be great if it were true? The point is, the OODA loop is a proven mental model that can be used to enhance adaptability in real-life situations, whether you're in design or any other field. So, go on, give it a try! You never know when you'll need to pivot.

2024.06.09 15:02 Turbulent_Pound4806 CMV: Veteran hate should be reformed

I wanted to make this post to maybe get a glimpse on why my view may be reasonable, but I hope it does inspire some to take a more, civil stance, when discussing things about service and former servicemen for a specified nation, and well, the US is a good example.
We leftists never side with war, we hated it with russia and ukraine, israel and palestine, the US and iraq, vietnman, and just any war that was not defensive basically. I want to mention though, that we have, a sick mindset, a hypocritical and an almost blind mindset, as we tend to disrespect people who came back from the claws of war.
No, I am not pulling the classic "respect veterans" type of talk that you see on youtube or on bing news comment sections, I am instead arguing for a more civil approach when you deal with this sort of stuff. We are not hate mongers who hate landlords, rich people and war veterans. We are supposedly advocates for peace and a place for everyone, we are civil, and if you're gonna accuse every servicemen of being a fascist and a child murderer, then I would argue that you are missing the point, and well, you're kind of a dick.
My proposal to anyone reading this who gets heated when they hear the cursed phrase "thank you for your service", is that, instead, we could say "Glad that you are home".
Glad that you are home? Well, think about it. This phrase does not support the foreign affairs a country had, and thus you are not an advocate for war, you are instead displaying gratefulness that someone came home safe, because truth is, most soldiers just wanted that the second they saw the horrors.
A soldier is a guardian, and every society no matter what your political stance has a soldier, different word, different purpose, different nation, but the same concept, someone who protects people from outside threats., And our problems are when a guardian is used to attack rather than guard. Let us not insult and disrespect the guardian, as I instead offer that we become more civil, and show gratitude that someone made it safe from the sharp claws of death, while always and always acknowledging how unjust and disgusting the governmental act was to send guardians to become aggressors.
So far so good? Uh, no?
Well, no indeed. There is a point to be made, that is, most soldiers have a mindset that advocates for national interest, and most of them may call you a hippie for criticizing that, I mean, let's look at Vietnam.
People often say "thank you for your service" when someone talks about their experience, however, when you are an advocate for peace, you will not acknowledge this service as necessary, you'll instead call it as a waste of human life, as we got ourself somewhere we didn't need to, and ended up killing our own people and their people.
What you could do, instead of saying that the vets are fascists child murderers, which is a terrible terrible overgeneralization that has no basis, and even if most soldiers went voluntarily, it does not serve justice to the soldier's intentions and it generalizes every soldier as a war criminal, which is an unhealthy mindset.
I offer that we show gratitude that they are back home alive, while continuing to fight for the peaceful cause through protests and other means, because we are peace advocates.
It's more civil, more understanding and less jumpy and ridiculous, and uh, to frank with you, it makes people actually listen to us, which is what we are fighting for, for our voice to be heard, and we really want to represent our ideas as reasonable educated that call for peace and harmony, and not as jumpy overheated online arguments that the right often associates us with.
The change needs to start within, and this change involves us to be the bigger headed here, and realize that, just because someone doesn't share our view, no matter how morally low it is, resorting to disrespect should be the last on the list (not that you can't resort to it, there are times where it's needed, but you know, just, don't be disrespectful to people if no one insulted you), and if you thought that peace was not the way for us to be heard, then you do you, but I just wanted to offer a chance that we show more humility and social decency when presenting ethics to an issue.
The ethical party needs to be loud and reasonable, not obnoxious and lousy.

2024.06.09 15:02 SignificantBuddy8151 is this is glitch or does the new ui not have any option show what cybernetics you have equiped, or how much compute power you have??

no like seriously, how can I view what cybernetics i have as a true kin with the new ui, im literally scrolling through all the menus, nothing nada?!!
i remember in the past there was a "status" screen for cybernetics or whatever. but i can't find one at all with the new ui
literally made an account just for these questions since this game has a huge amount of stuff that I don't understand. not just the mechanics but the UI itself
keep in mind i played a little back in 2020 then quit, but the ui completely changes and some of the hotkeys too i literally don't know where every menu is to the point where I spent 3 hours yesterday just rebinding everything.

2024.06.09 15:01 ibid-11962 Worldbuilding and Touring [Post Murtagh Christopher Paolini Q&A Wrap Up #10]

As discussed in the first post, this is my ongoing compilation of the remaining questions Christopher has answered online between August 1st 2023 and April 30th 2024 which I've not already covered in other compilations.
As always, questions are sorted by topic, and each Q&A is annotated with a bracketed source number. Links to every source used and to the other parts of this compilation will be provided in a comment below.
The previous post focused specifically on inspirations and other media. This installment will focus on Worldbuilding and Touring, how Christopher constructs his worlds, and how he goes about promoting them on tours. The topics aren't actually linked, but they both fill up around half a post and so are being joined here. The next and final post will focus on miscellaneous questions about the real world.

Worldbuilding

Creating Magic Systems
Did you have a research process when you were writing the Inheritance Cycle? I put a fair bit of thought into the story itself of the Inheritance Cycle, and then some general stuff as to the society and just kind of where things were in the world before writing it. I put a medium amount of thought into the magic system before I started writing, and then as I wrote the implications of it became much more apparent to me, and I really sort of dove deep into it. In retrospect, were I to create a fantasy world from scratch now, I would really put a lot of attention into that magic system and the society beforehand, just to have a good feel for that before I even start chapter one. I would put more restrictions on the magic too. I think the more restrictions, the more interesting, even the more realistic in some ways. [3]
If I were designing a magic system from scratch nowadays I would put way more restrictions on it because I find that the limitations are useful, I don't want the characters getting overpowered, but also just from a storytelling standpoint, incantations, rituals, spells, prayers, potions, all of those mechanical things are just kind of interesting and of course they give lots of opportunities for things to go wrong if you don't follow the correct steps. So I think if I were designing magic from scratch right now I'd put a lot of restrictions and rituals associated with it. So costs, more costs. [25]
What kind of hacks do you have to developing a magic system? Once I have a general idea of the setting, whether science fiction or fantasy, the first question I ask myself is how does it diverge from physics as we know it? Because that is a fundamental question that's going to determine what is possible in this world. It might determine what's possible with warfare, with politics, with industry, manufacturing, travel times, it could affect everything depending on what type of divergence you have. In the World of Eragon, the divergence is that living creatures have the ability to directly manipulate energy using their minds. The reason for that is kind of handwavy, although I have an explanation for it, but that is the divergence and then I tried to be as consistent and physically possible with it at every step of the way past that. When people play games you always get people who are looking how to exploit it. "What's the most I can get out of this game? What's the most I can do?" That's basic human nature. Science is a speedrunning nature I think. So the same sort of thing. You assume that if magic existed there's going to be someone sitting in their basement who's absolutely obsessive about it and is going to figure out every single advantage that that divergence gives them. And you have to be realistic and work that into your world and say "Well people aren't stupid. They are going to figure this out and use it in this way, and what are the implications, socially, physically, and everything else?" Once I have that then you can think about society and culture and everything else, but that basic physical difference from our reality is just to me fundamentally important to understand before I even begin to write. [25]
With standalones you're not dealing with continuity or what rule did you break or things like that. That's interesting, because I would say that writing a sequel for me is faster than writing a standalone. At least for me, the more I know the characters and the world, the faster, like I don't have to do the groundwork of creating a magic system, creating a society, creating the gods and the history. All that's done for me, so I can just slip into it like slipping on an old glove. [33]
Creating Religions
A socio-political religion in your world helps drive characters or stories or die-hard fanatic characters forward. How do you go about developing those? Have the courage to let your characters actually believe the things that they are supposed to believe. If you look back historically people really did truly believe these different religions and different systems. Too often I think with modern stories we have people only giving lip service to the supposed belief and instead having very modern attitudes toward it which perhaps doesn't always work. That's understandable if you want a character to be relatable to a modern reader, but there are so many examples of interesting belief systems throughout the world. To me that's something fascinating to write about. But the main thing is just accept that when people truly believe something they're genuine about it and then you can follow that from a logical and storytelling standpoint. What I'd also say is, if you're writing about something that is very different from your own belief system, assuming it's not like completely evil, to try to approach it with a sense of charity. With the understanding that everyone is searching for meaning and understanding. I've always had a soft spot for the old television show Babylon 5, because although I don't believe that the creator J. Michael Straczynski is religious, he writes all of his characters with great sympathy and understanding, he's never cynical about it, and he's not putting up straw man arguments or criticizing any of the characters. He's like "They're searching for meaning. They're struggling with the great questions as we all do, and each one is trying to solve those questions in their own way." And I always really appreciated that he wasn't being cynical about it or really shallow. [25]
Creating Languages
Did you think of the ancient language, not just as a mechanic, but also as a parable of our own language? I was thinking about how language itself feels like magic to me. You can write a story, you can convey information. Language in many ways is our greatest tool and makes us human along with, I would argue, our hands, our ability to manipulate objects and use actual tools. But one without the other wouldn't really work and wouldn't allow us to be a technological species. We could have language with no ability to handle tools, and then we wouldn't be what we are now. But I find language fascinating and I find the function of language incredibly interesting. And there is this idea in the real world going back to the beginning of time, that to name something is to understand it, and gives you a certain amount of power over it, whether that's a person or a physical object. And the ancient language is just taking that idea seriously. And I'm not the first author or tradition to do that, but is it a parallel? Is it a metaphor? I don't know if I'd go that far, but it definitely ties into the use of language and my ideas about it. What's crazy to me is there is a theoretical arrangement of words right now that would give us a massive breakthrough in science and physics. There's a theoretical arrangement of words that were I to write it or anyone else would influence how people think about the next presidential election to such a degree that it might actually changed the election. These are all theoretically possible and you can think of many many other things that you could do with language. We just lack the knowledge of what those arrangement of words are, and so we're constantly clawing our way toward new knowledge and new uses of language. [19]
The languages that you were playing around with in The Inheritance cycle, they were Germanic, Anglo Saxon based? The ancient language, the magical language, is based very strongly on Old Norse, which of course is Germanic or related to Old High German. The Dwarven language was invented pretty much from scratch although it is an agglutinative language like German is. And then the other languages have not appeared very much in the series. They're just little scraps here and there. To be clear, I am not a linguist, and I have not devoted the time and energy to developing these in a formal or rigorous way, the way that Tolkien did. Tolken was a linguist and that was his forte. I got far enough down that path while working on the Inheritance Cycle that I really began to appreciate how every word has a history and that history is inexorably tied to the history of the land. It's often said that Tolkien created Middle-earth just to explain his languages, as a setting for the languages. Which isn't entirely true, but there is truth to that. That's what I was encountering and I was realizing that I could spend 20 years, 10 years, just working on the languages and building this out. It might have been a worthwhile venture, but the tradeoff would have been no more books published during that time. I want to tell a story. [28]
What I would do these days, or what I did with other languages, is come up with a couple of words that sort of had a general feel that I liked and then extrapolating from those invented words, figuring out what consonants and vowels and clusters thereof that I wanted. Come up with some more sample words based off that and then start working out some grammar. Grammar is probably my weakest spot since at the time I wasn't really aware of non-English grammar systems and I've put some more attention in that since then. [34]
The language and culture that you describe in the books seem very real. How do you start inventing a language? You shamelessly steal from Germanic mythology and Scandinavian mythology, just like Tolkien did. But I'm no linguist, I did my best, I have a copy of the Nibelungen up on my shelf along with the Eddas, and I based one of my languages on Old Norse, which gave it a nice sound and feel. So the main thing is picking things that make sense for your world and then trying to be internally consistent. [2]
Creating Maps
At what point in your writing process do you start creating the map? I've created the maps at different times in different books. At first I thought I didn't need a map because I thought that a good book should be perfectly understandable without a map. You shouldn't need to rely on anything outside of the text in order to enjoy it. And I still think that's generally true, but a map can add a lot. So for Eragon, I did it partway through the book. If I were to do a stand-alone fantasy novel, I would definitely want to work out the maps and stuff before writing it. [12]
The map for Eragon, the original black and white map, I did about halfway or a third of the way into Eragon. My idea was, and I still kind of believe this, that a well-written book shouldn't need a map in order to understand the story. You should be able to keep your bearings just based off the text. What I ran into though was that I was getting lost in the world myself with the amount of places and things after a certain point. And so I drew a map. [34]
For me I think if you're creating something in the real world obviously that gives you certain constraints and certain advantages but if you're starting with something from scratch, I find creating a map right up front is really helpful because your story is not going to visit every square inch on your map so by filling in those other details on the map you're going to get more story ideas and also ideas for potential conflicts, travel distances. It all feeds into the realism of the story as well as potentially future stories. It's fun stuff. The downside is you could spend your whole life worldbuilding. There's a there's a book from World War Two called Islandia, and the guy just spent his whole life creating this island and its culture to the point of working out the actual layers of geography of stone in the island. I've never actually read the book, I don't know if it's any good, but I know it was fairly popular when it came out. [25]
What hacks do you have for for creating geography and points of interest within your world? When I was creating the map for Alagaësia I actually used a old National Geographic Atlas and traced over various coastlines and then distorted them and pasted on top of each other in order to get sort of a natural feeling coastline. Please don't compare the island of Vroengard to the outline of Greece. Please don't do that. And then you have Robin Hobb who just turned Alaska upside down for her map which I always love because I've lived in Alaska twice. I think she told me that she never actually expected the book to get published, but then she got stuck with that because everything was tied to the geography that she started with. [25]
I think that a good map ought to have lots of points of interest, and the tricky bit is, without getting so detailed that it becomes cluttered. You see that sometimes with real world maps, like atlases and stuff, where there's a ton of place names, city names, river names, road names. All of which are useful and necessary, but it can actually visually get in the way of the art, perhaps the artistic effect that you would want a fantasy map to have in a book or a movie or even a game. [12]
There are world generators that you can just click through. It's really easy nowadays with technology to build worlds just by snapping your fingers. Even with those tools, if you have the time and inclination, I think there is some benefit to redrawing or painting the maps in your own style. I don't know about you, I love seeing when the maps are from the author themselves. I remember Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn by Tad Williams. Tad did all the maps himself, and I love that. Even if it's imperfect or a little amateurish it just gives it a really nice feel. I love Tolkien's original art for the same reason. [25]
Creating Dragons
You are the creator of your own world. Do you feel that you have follow certain canons of fantasy worlds, for example, dragons have four legs and wyverns have two? Or do you feel that you can practically do whatever you want because it's fantasy and you create everything? Yes and no. No because I have already established rules and traditions and precedence in The World of Eragon, so I have to be consistent with that. But if I were writing a new fantasy, I would not feel beholden to any tradition. If I wanted to write a world where the dragons have three legs or feathers or something like that then I would feel free to do that. That's the great thing about speculative fiction is it gives you the freedom to write and create whatever you want to. The thing is when you have a genre where anything is possible it actually reveals the limitations of your imagination. And there are very few authors, myself included, who really make full use of that. But at the same time, limitations can make your fiction more interesting. I think it's important to pick some limitations and that will help actually improve the quality of your work. [7]
Why did you decide to have your dragons have a saddle? I was around horses growing up. And the thought of actually physically being on a creature with very hard scales was rather terrifying if thought about in a practical sense. And so it just seemed to me that there had to be some protection. [33]
When you're writing fantasy and you include dragons, especially a dragon rider fantasy, depending on how many there are there, it's actually quite a difficult thing to not solve all your problems with dragons. I think the solution to that is you focus on the problems that dragons present, which balances out the advantages. And of course people are smart, whether we're talking about humans or elves or dwarves or any other invented species. If dragons were real, you'd come up with counters to them, whether it's a bunch of giant ballistae on your walls, or building domed fortresses, or building underground. You would come up with solutions and it would negate those advantages. And that's always my issue with writing fiction with dragons in the real world. If it's a slightly more modern, then you have to ask, well, why isn't everything different in history? Like if dragons were a constant part of our world, architecture would be different, warfare would be different, politics would be different. Well, no, politics would be the same. What am I saying? [30]
I'm sure all of us have seen the fantasy paintings of like a knight in armor with a lance on a horse facing off against a dragon. Now, to be fair, a lance moving at a decent speed at a horse galloping will have enough kinetic energy behind it to punch through just about anything. It could do a lot of damage. But any decent sized dragon would move so fast and be so strong, you wouldn't have a chance with a lance. You'd need a giant crossbow. That'd be your only choice. The size of a dragon, intelligence of a dragon. Until you get to projectile weapons, you have no chance. [30]
We all know what any creature gets when they bond with a dragon. They get a dragon. But why would a dragon create that bond? Why would they do it? Is it the bond, is it their nature? I think for me, having other species bond with the dragons was essentially a way to keep the dragons from getting wiped out. Because dragons are such a huge threat. If you imagine in the real world, we don't suffer giant predators to be constantly predating and disrupting our world. We remove that threat. Especially if there's magic involved, the ability to remove that threat gets even bigger. So in a way I viewed the bond between rider and dragon as essentially self preservation for the dragons, if not the other species as well. Without some sort of symbiotic relationship, coexistence becomes very, very difficult. That, or the dragons have to be smart enough to just essentially remove themselves from the world and live off in the far off places. But that gets really difficult when you start considering how much they need to eat. I remember reading the Live Ship Trader series and I remember the end of that spoiler alert where it's become clear that true dragons have returned now. And it really was kind of an oh crap moment because you start thinking about what that actually means for there to be dragons in the world again. It's kind of like Reign of Fire. [30]

Promoting The Books

Touring Hazards
How did you do on your book tour? It was a lot. It was a lot. I did 50 days of touring last year between Fractal Noise and Murtagh. Obviously the majority of that was for Murtagh. And of course I had a couple other trips in there as well. I went to New York Comic Con. I had one or two personal trips. So there was a lot of travel last year. My goal is to not have as much travel this year. In general, the book tours were awesome, great crowds for the Fractalverse, enormous crowds for World of Eragon/Murtagh. I don't normally talk about this stuff, but since we're past it, it doesn't matter. I started touring for Murtagh November 6th and then got home for good on December 16th. But there's always a risk of getting sick while you're traveling. And I did pretty well in the US leg of things. And then over in Europe between the jet lag and not sleeping- I had a really amazing dinner, one of my publishers took me out to a three star Michelin restaurant. The problem was the dinner started at 8pm and didn't finish till midnight. And there were two or three desserts, and the last dessert was full of coffee, and I didn't realize it. Absolutely full of coffee. And I did not get to sleep until like four in the morning. And I only had three hours of sleep that night. So I think I got sick the day after as a result. I got so sick on the European tour that at one of my stops I had to call paramedics to my hotel room at 2 a.m. because I couldn't breathe. Ended up with bronchitis for the first time in my life. But I'll have you know, I did every event. I didn't miss a single event. I managed to do all my presentations and made it through in one piece. I've never, never backed down from doing an event, even while bleeding. Can you tell us a little bit about the time that you were bleeding in an event? Well, I was in Europe. I was touring for Inheritance, I'd already toured North America, and then I started in Europe, went to UK, and then I went to Australia and New Zealand. But first country was Germany, and I think I did Munich and Cologne, and then I ended in Berlin. And in Berlin, they had me in this wonderful theater that's like over 100 years old, which is very rare in the city, considering all the bombing during the war. And I'm backstage, which meant down in the basement of this theater. And there's like 500 people out waiting for me to make an appearance and there's someone introducing me and they say my name and everyone starts clapping. And of course you want to get on stage before the applause dies down. And the way you got onto stage in this theater was through a set of stairs. And it really wasn't even steps. It was almost like a ladder and it was wood. And the steps were so old that they were basically hollowed out from all the people that have gone up and down it over the years. So I'm scrambling up this and about halfway up, my right foot slipped off the edge of one of the steps because it was hollowed out and full speed, full strength, full weight, I slammed my shin into the edge of one of the steps, stumbled forward two more steps and did it a second time. But momentum, adrenaline, I keep going, I get up on stage, I waved to everyone. And fortunately for me, because I was speaking to a foreign audience, they had me sitting at a table with a translator and a presenter. So I got to sit down and the table kind of hit everything from view. And I start the presentation, start the event. And after about, I don't know, five minutes, I'm thinking to myself, okay, I've banged my shin before. We've all banged our shins before, but this really bleepin' hurt. So I looked under the table and the whole front of my jean leg on my shin is soaked with blood. There is blood dripping onto the floor and my sock is soaked with blood. So I poked my translator, the presenter next to me that I was doing a couple of events with, and I said, "Hey, look at this". And he glances under and his face just goes white. And I'm colorblind and I saw his face go white. And he said, "Do we need to call an ambulance?" And I'm like, "No, no, we're going to do this." So I did an hour-long presentation. And then I got up and managed to quickly limp over to a signing table. And no one really noticed that I wasn't feeling so hot. And I got behind the signing table, and I signed books for 400 or 500 people. And the funny thing is, I was traveling with this foreign rights agent publicist for Random House named Jocelyn, who was just an absolute beast of a woman. I love her to death. You have to understand, she did a European book tour with me while eight months pregnant. The woman was and is just very impressive. But she grew up on a farm. German family in the US, grew up on a farm. So I showed her my leg when I was sitting down to sign and she just looked at me and she said, "You need to go to the hospital?" I said, "Nope". She said, "I knew you were country. Good man." Slapped me on the back. So I finished signing and then I went back to the hotel and I had to get into a tub of water to soak my jeans off because the blood had dried and glued them to my shin. And the problem was I had a dent all the way down to the bone. And I really should have gone to a hospital because, sorry for the gory details, but what happens is when you get a dent like that, you lose the fat under the skin between the skin and the bone and it doesn't come back unless you get an injection to help it puff out and heal. And I didn't do that because I was on tour, there was no time. So the next day I had to fly to pretty sure it was Barcelona for the St. George Book Festival, which is a walking festival. So you have to walk from bookstore to bookstore in the city and do signings. But that was a bit rough. That actually took over a year to heal properly. I still have that dent. Stuff happens. I've heard some crazy stories with other authors. I'd rather it's my blood, not the fan's blood. [32]
Touring Difficulties
We've got blood and sweat, any tears from tour? On occasion. The biggest one is just being away from home. And if anything is a bit off for whatever reason, you can't just pop home and hold someone or do this or do that. It's just difficult to be that far away from home for so long. [32]
If you're not familiar with book tours, the way it often works is that you fly to a city, you get to your hotel room, you have a little bit of time to freshen up, maybe get some food and then you go to the bookstore and you do your event. And it has to be after people get off from work, so it tends to be a later evening event. If you have a large number of people show up, that means that that time spent talking and signing pushes fairly late in the evening. You go back, you get dinner, and if you're a semi-introvert like so many authors tend to be, you need some time to decompress, which means you probably stay up a little too late reading or writing. And then in the morning, you got to go get another airplane flight and go to the new city. All of which is fine, but going to the airport, doing those flights, with the time it takes to go through an airport these days, it means that the schedule has very little time in it. When I toured for Fractal Noise, the publisher one of the days had me fly from Tampa to Portland and I still had to do an event that day. Which I agreed to. It was my own fault because they had everything on the East Coast and I said, "Well, what about the West Coast? You know, I have readers on the West Coast. They need to get a chance to get a signed book." It was my own fault. But that can get rough when you're doing it for weeks on end at a certain point. You just can't recover. A day off? What's that? But it's a good problem to have. That people want to see you and want to read your books. It's an awesome career to have. [1]
I'm also a big fan of coffee naps. So I will drink a cup of coffee, usually my second cup of coffee, and then I'll go take a nap, and I will nap for about 30 minutes, because after 30 minutes the coffee wakes me up. And I find that 15 to 30 minutes is the perfect length of a nap for me, and if I go past that, I need to sleep for about three hours, because otherwise I get into the middle of a REM cycle, and if I wake up in the middle of a REM cycle, I'm just like groggy and drugged, and I feel worse than if I hadn't napped at all. And then of course, if you're on book tour, the way I have been for a while, you gain the ability to just close your eyes at any point and take a 10 minute nap 15 minute nap anywhere, and it at least helps you stay upright. [19]
Meeting Fans around the World
You just got back from the U.S. leg of your book tour — who’s making up the crowd? The readership is broad and probably older than it was back in the day. There are still a lot of 8-year-olds, but now there are grandparents, too. I’ve even met some kids who’ve been named after the characters, which is pretty amazing. Because people have been reading the series for so long, I tend to get a mix of incredibly detailed, hyper-focused, deep-dive questions about some of the lore, but also some more general ones about Eragon’s name. [16]
I'm sure you hear personal stories all the time especially at your readings and your your appearances. It must be lovely, and I guess overwhelming to connect with your fans. That's a good way of putting it: lovely and overwhelming. Everyone has their own personal history with these books. I have people showing up who named their children after the characters, or who've gotten tattoos. Oh my goodness, what's the one you get? Multiple Saphiras, Aryas, Rorans, a couple of Eragons. As a writer, you want people to read your stories, enjoy them, be affected by them. If they're affected so strongly they name their children after your characters, you feel pretty good about it. [28]
Are your European fans different from your American fans? I actually haven't met any children here who are named after characters from my books. That seems to be an American phenomenon. The language barrier sometimes makes it a little more difficult to talk to European fans. But the love for Eragon is just as strong in Europe as it is in the US. This is not your first time on tour in Europe. Is there something you're missing here? I actually noticed that hotels in Europe usually don't have ironing boards or irons. This is standard equipment in America. [24]
My great-grandmother was from Sicily and then my grandfather was from Bologna. I just found out recently that my grandfather as a child was tutored by Fellini's wife. [7]
My grandfather was the stereotype of an elderly Italian gentleman. He had a mustache, he cooked spaghetti and he made the most amazing red sauce for the spaghetti. He used too much profanity. He was quite the character. [35]
Amsterdam is a beautiful city, but if I had grown up here I would probably still have written fantasy, but it would probably have influenced the type of fantasy I write. [23]
I was just in Stockholm on book tour for my latest book. And I've sold a really large number of books, proportionally in Sweden, and I'd never been there before. And I was kind of curious what their thoughts and feelings were on it, given the fact that I have shamelessly pillaged, Anglo-Saxon Scandinavian mythology for my own work. And they said native Swedish authors don't write using their own mythology, they go into the more literary veins and they import and translate other authors who are writing about Scandinavian mythology and they enjoy it immensely, but it doesn't seem to be a homegrown thing for them, which is rather odd, I think. [30]
Old Norse is not so far from German, do you speak a little bit of German? I understand a fair bit. When I've done presentations in Germany, I've had children ask me questions in German, and I can sometimes understand the entire question without translation, but I only speak a few words. [Host 2]: Let's try it. Can you ask the next question in German? Of course. Oh dear. Translation please. That was not fair. But funny. Yeah, I was just asking, when you started writing the book, and it became not just one book, it became a whole world, it became a series, and I don't want to spoil anything, but if you read the first books and you read the later books, stuff comes up again, and it seems like you actually knew where it was going when you started writing, which is again insane because you were 15. Is that something you just got lucky, or did you really plan for a whole series when you started writing the first one? I planned because I tried writing some stories before Eragon, and I never got past the first five or ten pages because I didn't have a story. I would only have an inciting incident, like a young man finds a dragon egg in the forest. Well, fun, awesome, but that's not a story. So Eragon and the series as it was, was a writing exercise for myself to see if I could outline, plot, and then write at least the first book of a series. So yes, if you read the first book, Eragon, there's actually a scene, a dream sequence in the first book. And it is the very last scene of the last book. And I did that specifically so that I could point to it and say to my readers, "See, I knew what I was doing." But of course, it isn't the last book now. [2]
Before he finished signing them all he asked if I read Fractal Noise, I said yes. He then asked how I liked it. I said I liked To Sleep far more. And to be fair I did. But I could've been a little more less brunt about it. All in all I'm sorry Paolini. I hope you see this. Dude -- No need to apologize! I was the one who put you on the spot. I was just curious about Fractal Noise as it's pretty different from what I normally write. That said, I'm a big boy, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest if someone prefers one book over another. [R]
Have you been on TikTok? How do you find it? I have an account that my assistants post content on for me because I don't have the time and I don't want it on my phone, but it has been a really useful way to connect with readers, and I had a lot of people who came up during my book tour end of last year, who said that they found out about the events I was doing from the posts on TikTok. [33]
Outside of the tour, did you do anything to personally celebrate the release of Murtagh? No. Not to sound blase, but this isn't my first book I've released. Going on the tour is the celebration. Getting to meet the fans. It's an enormous expenditure of energy, time, effort, and it's very joyous and touching and meaningful for me. And I think for a lot of the readers. So that's the celebration. My team and I, we all kind of take a moment to pat ourselves on the back every time a book comes out and then it's back to the grind a bit. Also, I got to celebrate my 40th birthday while on book tour, and I got to celebrate it with my editor, my publicist, my former publicist who's been with me since the beginning. So that was really nice. [32]
Appearance
Being an author is like the best kind of semi-celebrity, because nine times out of ten, no one knows who you are, you can live a nice quiet life, and then you get to go out and meet people who like your work. And that's a real treat. I grew the beard partly to keep people from recognizing me. But then I've had it for so long that it doesn't work anymore. And I got tired of shaving. But the problem is the beard takes so much time and effort to take care of it, it doesn't save me any time. [1]
Did your hat end up getting fixed post-tour? Yup. Fixed it myself with a rivet. [T]
Any advice on how to wear a pirate's hat without it being weird? It's very simple. There's one ingredient. You wear it with confidence. That's all. [36]
Signing Books
People people don't maybe don't realize what an endurance race it is, especially when when books are this big and successful. Like the amount. I once did 9,280 books in an afternoon and a half at a warehouse. I had nine people helping. I stood. I find that if I stand, I don't use my wrist. I can isolate the arm. And I just had someone shove it under me, someone pull it out for me, and everyone else was boxing, unboxing and flapping. But it hurt. It really hurt. I dropped my first name this past year. For the first time in a 20 year career, I finally dropped my first name. Did you feel defeated? Yes. But I have kids now and I just could not afford the time and the strain on my body. I actually got two typewriters. I got really bad inflammation in my right thumb from all the signing and I find that typewriters alleviated that. Also heavier like mechanical keyboards seem to help. So I know like Robin Hobb has suffered some severe problems with her hands with the amount of typing she's done over the years. So yeah, it is an occupational hazard. [33]
I have to say, signing 30,000 sheets is SIGNIFICANTLY harder than mining or placing 30k blocks in #Minecraft. Lol. [T]
Do you have a PO Box or something? I’d pay shipping both ways to have you sign my books. P.O. box is listed on paolini.net. Just include return shipping, please. :D Alternatively, you can arrange signed copies through Conley's Books & Music in Livingston, MT. [R]
If I send a book to a P.O. Box and pay for shipping there and back, would you sign it? Yup. Address is on paolini.net [T]

2024.06.09 15:01 survivaltothrival Healing Schizophrenia - Success Story!

This post has been adapted from Eft Universe, written by Sonia Novinsky. It's a long post, but a brilliant case study proving psychotic disorders can in fact be healed.
Jacqueline came to me about 1 year ago. She had been diagnosed as a schizophrenic with auditory hallucinations, depression, and an inability to operate in social environments. Now, the hallucinations are gone and she is well adapted to society. Along the way, many other benefits occurred, including relief from anorexia and the cessation of smoking. Here’s the story.
She arrived in a very depressive state, saying to me: “This is my last chance. And all I can pay is 10 dollars per session.” It was impossible to refuse her desperate appeal for help. She said…
“For 9 years now, since my daughter was born, I am taking Haldol, Prozac and other medications because psychiatrists considered me an incurable schizophrenic patient. I’ve been sleeping most of my daytime during all these years. After a traumatic event when my daughter was born, I fell into a depression. I started listening to Mary’s voice (Jesus’s mother) [diagnosed by her former psychiatrist as an auditory hallucination] and I had some inappropriate behaviours, including a kind of anorexia, with hospitalisation. I heard about your work with energy and I want to try it. I believe that this could help me get rid of medication and my disease. The only reason I don’t kill myself today is because my religion forbids me to do it.”
At the first moment, she told me that she had a supportive husband and parents, and also wonderful children and that made her feel more guilty for being a mentally ill person. She complained of smoking too much, of having difficulty resting and sleeping. She said she was also 30 kg more than her ideal weight, partly because of the antipsychotic medication. During the last 9 years she had been afraid to drive a car; before her crisis, driving was normal for her.
The last psychiatrist she saw was very oppressive, telling her she had an incurable mental illness and would be obliged to take Haldol for the rest of her life. When she arrived at my office, she was very angry with all psychiatrists and therapists who took care of her during all these years. They gave her no hope: just labels and drugs.
Before investigating core issues, I worked for some weeks on our rapport, trying to help her on her self-esteem and trying to develop some trust in our connection. She was very upset with the kind of relationship she had with her psychiatrists and therapists. A hierarchy was always present, and she was the inferior part of it, all the time. Her objections about the treatment were never validated by them.
In this case, it is very important to stress how strong was her intention to get rid of any medication because they condemned her to be out of a normal life.
I will give a summary of the main topics we worked with in EFT. We did EFT hundreds of times. I do a free talk while tapping, in a way that I can’t reproduce here, introducing humour and installing new meanings and possibilities. She was entirely open to working with EFT.
We started working with the most apparent sensation she was having at the moment she arrived. In my experience, you can start with this state, even if it is not a core issue. When this layer is reached, even if you don’t clear it completely, it gives room for the traumatic memories to show up.
Meanwhile, you get the basic trust needed to work deeply. So we started working on her self-image and self-esteem.
While we were tapping, I installed some reframing about how I was one with her, no hierarchy between us, how we were together and no label separating us.
The result was important for the rest of the treatment: She trusted that she was not alone and that I was assuming a strong, deep, and personal commitment with her.
She disclosed that when her daughter was born she was very upset with some events and we tapped on them. The worst one (which launched her first psychotic episode) was her husband’s imposition that his mother should be the godmother of her daughter. When Jacqueline went to see her mother-in-law to invite her, her reaction was very negative. She said: “I accept to be the godmother but I will not receive your family in my house.” This was a traumatic event for Jacqueline.
She felt very unhappy, with no way out, and thus she had her first psychotic attack. She undressed completely at a soccer stadium full of people.
We tapped for this event, and many aspects showed up. We tapped for the shame and guilt of not having control of her behaviour. While she was narrating the event, I tapped on her. This is my preferred way of tapping specific events. This one was a very traumatic event, but finally her husband agreed to her demand that his mother would not do the baptism of their daughter.
Thus she was victorious in some way, but she paid a high price for this “victory”: From this day on, she carried the label of a sick person. Two months later, her mother-in-law died suddenly and that gave Jacqueline the illusion of having a mean power inside her, and that made her still more guilty. In some way, Jacqueline felt she had no control over herself but from another point of view she was afraid of having some extraordinary power.
Jacqueline wanted to drive a car again. She felt ready to try it after clearing her psychotic attack and its consequences*.* So we tapped for the fear of driving, first at my office, then in her car.
Some aspects of her fear were: fear of losing control, fear of hitting the car, fear of hitting some one on the streets, fear of killing someone.
We made a test. We went inside her car and tapped in the car for any aspect, like “heart jumping too fast,” “I am not able to drive anymore,” etc. With me at her side, in the car, she drove the car by herself. After a couple of minutes, she was very calm, driving the car. Since that day she has been driving the car with no problem, with her children. Sao Paulo (my home) has very dangerous and wild traffic. Many normal people don’t drive cars here. But she does it now.
Schizophrenia is caused sometimes by double messages received mainly during childhood. Since her birth we could find many situations where double messages were received. Clearing all these double messages of Jacqueline’s life, from her birth until now, it was essential to allow her to see everything in a different way and to create a more integrated identity.
Jacqueline was the first child. Her father (Italian origin) wanted only a male child. When Jacqueline was born her mother felt in some way not comfortable with the fact that she couldn’t give her husband a boy. At the beginning of her life, Jacqueline felt no holding, no sensation of being desired. Eleven months after her birth, her mother gave birth to a boy who received all the attention of the parents. Jacqueline was most of the time with a single aunt that had a strong passion for a Catholic priest at that time.
We tapped for all events and sensations Jacqueline could remember that were related to this belief of not being wanted, of not deserving love, of being guilty for not being the boy her parents were waiting for. The strategy Jacqueline found was trying to persuade her father that she was good enough like a boy would be, and to do so she became too close to him and that made her mother very jealous and ambivalent toward her.
Investigating it more, I discovered that when Jacqueline had her crisis, after the birth of her daughter, she was feeling guilty and not deserving of having two healthy children, a boy and a girl. This was connected with a specific and important event that we addressed in each detail.
When she was 18 years old, she was dating her future husband and she got pregnant. As she was very religious and she wanted to become a mother, she didn’t want to get an abortion. But her husband, Leo, said that he would stay with her only if she got the abortion.
She postponed it as much as she could. She felt under a big pressure. She didn’t want to lose Leo and didn’t want to lose her child. She talked with her parents and they agreed with the abortion. So she did it. It was a very traumatic event for her. She felt guilty for the abortion, felt enraged with Leo, who didn’t go with her to the clinic, and felt very uncomfortable with her father. After the abortion, he was very critical of her. Their parents were supportive on one side, but on the other they were very severe and full of deception.
We tapped for each aspect of this event: the blood she saw, the place where she lay down, the light of the room, the questions the doctor asked her, the ambivalent sight of her mother, the feeling of abandonment because Leo was not there, the guilt of killing a 4-month-old fetus.
We discovered that her anorexia was connected with the blood she saw at the abortion. From that day, she started feeding herself in a more balanced way and started losing the extra weight she had at the beginning of the treatment.
We could see at that moment how the mother-in-law event triggered the abortion trauma, guilt, and anger. When her husband made this second imposition to her, “My mother will baptise my daughter,” she fell apart and collapsed. From that day, she started hallucinating and having inappropriate behaviours. One manifestation of this behaviour was a passion for a Catholic priest (like her dear aunt in the past), who held her in a compassionate way at the church.
In my point of view, the main issue for Jacqueline was not being held since the beginning of her life, and this fact was repeated many times, maybe because the writings on her walls were like these: “I don’t deserve to be loved, I don’t deserve to be held, there is something wrong with me, I should be different to be accepted, I am inappropriate, I have some strange powers that can harm people, etc.”
What was interesting is that when we cleared all aspects of the guilt of the abortion, including the guilt of having healthy children and the guilt of being alive (she used to talk of suicide as a self-punishment), that same week her anxiety stopped, her voice became more calm, and she stopped smoking.
I think the most important piece of this therapy was the possibility she opened for me to have a deep rapport with her while tapping. She started believing that she was a person, not a sickness, and as far as this occurred, her own family started to legitimate her as a mother, a professional, and a complete human being. She felt the self-confidence to restart her professional life. For 10 years her family and Leo’s family considered Leo the best husband, almost an angel, and Jacqueline was the crazy one, the problem. The whole system around her changed when she changed.
Some months ago she gave me a long written testimony (in Portuguese), about her issues and her treatment, confirming some of the results I have written here. Her intention was to help other people who could profit from her experience. On one of the last days, she completed the testimony verbally. I quote her words:
“For the first time in my life I feel peace in my heart. I have difficulties with my son and with my husband, but they don’t disturb my peace. I want to live like a normal woman and like a helper, for this I am praying and serving as a volunteer in a hospital.
“For the first time people trust me again. I was elected to the directory board of my club, and possibly I will be a candidate for a public position in the near future. I am free from the obsession for the priest. I know it because I went to see him in the church and could see him only as the priest he is. I don’t need smoking or the voices I used to listen to. I can remember the abortion without guilt. I couldn’t have a child for myself at that moment. I feel free from the double messages my husband used to send to me all the time, saying he loved me but excluding me from his life and problems and pleasures. I feel ready to take care of myself, and to take care of my children. I am living each day, not anticipating the worst like I used to. The pressure I felt in my heart is gone. I feel as healthy as anyone in this life, even if I need therapy for some more time.”
In conclusion, I think that what was decisive was EFT plus the holding she felt because I could accept, without any judgment, her passion and fantasies for the priest, her wish to die, and her fear of getting crazy, and her deep pain out of any category or classification that could separate us.

2024.06.09 15:00 sameed_a how to improve adaptability with systems thinking?

One morning, I was on my usual route, riding the subway to work. Amidst the daily chaos and humdrum, my mind was wrestling with a problem. My team and I had been struggling with a project at work for weeks. Our usual methods seemed ineffective and the team was starting to get frustrated.
As I was sipping my coffee, I noticed the subway map hanging across me. It was an intricate network of lines, each representing a different route, but somehow, they were all interconnected, forming a complex yet organized system. And then it hit me like a lightning bolt! All this time, we had been treating our project as a straight line, going from point A to point B. But in reality, it was more like the subway map, a system, where each component affected the other.
That's when I decided to approach our problem using the concept of Systems Thinking, viewing our project as an interconnected set of elements rather than isolated incidents. Back at work, I shared this with my team and we began to see our project from a broader perspective. We understood how one decision in one area could impact another, creating a ripple effect through the entire system. Applying this mentality, we could make improvements across the board, instead of compartmentalizing issues. This realization was not only a game-changer for our project, but it also improved our adaptability as a team.
We started to notice patterns, understand how elements influence one another, and anticipate how changes would affect the system as a whole. This didn’t only help us solve our immediate problem but also equipped us with a tool to tackle future challenges. Our work improved significantly and we could adapt to the constantly changing requirements of our project with relative ease.
This subway ride possibly changed the way I look at problems forever. The world isn't a series of unrelated incidents, but a network of systems. And understanding these systems, using them to our advantage, can make a world of difference in how we solve problems and adapt to changes.
P.S.: Yes, this subway epiphany is a hypothetical story. But isn't it interesting how the framework of Systems Thinking can be found in something as mundane as a subway map? You never know, your next breakthrough could be lurking in your morning coffee or even the crossword puzzle in your evening newspaper! So, keep your mental models handy. You never know when they might come in use...or even change your life!
Now if you'll excuse me, I have a subway ride to catch. Who knows what problems I'll solve today!

2024.06.09 14:56 Mr_1611 How to respond when position title changes only in the offer (without any prev communication)?

Big prestigious company posted online the job as SFA, which I applied and then received an email from them, with the job’s title (SFA) in the subject. Next emails were simply Interview [My name] – [Interviwer’s name]. I realised the job’s title change by myself, which was confirmed when I called them back.
I passed all interviews for the SFA position and got really happy when a person from HR called me to congratulate me for passing the job interviews, and told me that I would receive an email with their offer. Important to note, that during this call, I was still not informed about the job title’s change.
When I received their email, it caught me by surprise that the job’s title was with FA title. I though this was very weird and called straightaway to understand what was going on. The HR person told me a very weird story, saying that it is equivalent to FAII, and they put me in this job title because makes it easier in the near future within 1 or 2 years to promote me to SFA, as they like to promote quickly. In the end of the call, I told that I will answer them soon.
From my point of view, this was very unprofessional, they had to tell me the job title’s change at least in the congratulations call. They simply kept quiet about it and changed the title only in the email of the offer, also with no heads up on that.
Despite their great company name, I will not do the move because I don’t want to make a lateral move. In my current job, there is a big chance that I get a promotion to SFA in April 2025. In addition to that, I am very comfortable and performing well at my current employer.
The new company offers a nice year end bonus (as per your performance). Currently, I don’t have any bonus, but even though I am not willing to take the risk for that.
I have been thinking how should I answer them. I really would like to work for them, but the job title is very important for me. I would like to try convincing them about the job’s title and to increase the base salary (they low balled me a bit).
If you were in my position, how would you approach them?

2024.06.09 14:55 Turbulent_Pound4806 Sick of veteran hate

Please read this to the last, I mean it, I came in good faith and I am in no way advocating for anything conservative here.
I wanted to make this post to maybe inspire some people to take a more, civil stance when discussing things about service and former servicemen for a specified nation, and well, the US is a good example.
No, I am not pulling the classic "respect veterans" type of talk, I am instead arguing for a more civil approach when you deal with this sort of stuff. We are not hate mongers who hate landlords, rich people and war veterans. We are supposedly advocates for peace and a place for everyone, and if you're gonna accuse every servicemen of being a fascist and a child murderer, then I would argue that you are missing the point, and well, you're kind of a dick.
A soldier is a guardian, and our problems are when a guardian is used to attack rather than guard. Let us not insult and disrespect the guardian, because we always need a guardian. I instead offer that we become more civil, and show gratitude that someone made it safe, while always and always acknowledging how unjust and disgusting the governmental act was to send guardians to become aggressors.
I offer that we show gratitude that they are back home, while continuing to fight for the peaceful cause through protests.
It's more civil, more understanding and less jumpy and ridiculous, and uh, to frank with you, it makes people actually listen to us, which is what we are fighting for, for our voice to be heard, and we really want to appear as reasonable educated people who call for peace and harmony, and not as jumpy overheated online arguers right?
The change needs to start within, and this change involves us to be the bigger headed here, and realize that, just because someone doesn't share our view, no matter how morally low it is, resorting to disrespect should be the last on the list, and if you thought that peace was not the way for us to be heard, then you do you, but I just wanted to offer a chance that we show more humility and social decency when presenting ethics to an issue.
The ethical party needs to be loud and reasonable, not obnoxious and lousy.

2024.06.09 14:51 ThomasE900 Why Is My Model Rendering Twice?

I am rendering two models with the same command buffer. The first model is meant to be a skybox. The textures that are being rendered onto the models are of two different sizes and the first one is being used for the sampler. For some reason the first model is being rendered twice causing in some weird z fighting like behaviour. The second model is rendering correctly.
On Render Doc the depth buffer shows that there is some collision. I think the first model being rendered twice with its own texture the first time and then the texture of the second model.
I have tried switching the model order and the result is not flipped.
Here is the result: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPj6PK-3STI
I am fairly sure the problem has something to do with the command buffer but I am not sure what the issue is:

2024.06.09 14:50 SoupySpice AIO for I (22F) feeling like my friends family is using to get rid of their sons baby mama and also wants me to give him another chance.

I (22F) became friends with Chuck (22M) a little under three years ago. I met him through the guy I was dating at the time. They had a falling out and were never friends again. 8 months later I broke up with said boyfriend due to his laziness and ultimately him falling asleep at work which got him fired from the job I worked to get him. A while after I healed, Chuck asked me to give him a chance. So I did. This lasted for about two months and I found out he was sleeping with another woman. His mother and little sister (16F) blew up on him for it since I was extremely close with his parents and sister. I continued to be friends with the sister because I viewed her as my little sister and the parents as my non-blood family. Turns out Chuck got the woman pregnant and now she lives with them. Baby mama completely hates me because she found out about mine and Chuck’s past. Now onto where I think I’m over reacting. Whenever I am over or whenever the mother and sister message me, it is always about how baby mama isn’t doing a single thing around their home, constantly calling out of work, not paying the 150 a month rent they’d agreed on, and more. It’s to the point where they call the baby mama mean names behind her back to me. Recently, Chuck has been making small talk whenever I am over at their house and asks if we could rekindle the friendship. I told him I want to be acquaintances with boundaries. Now, the sister keeps asking if I’d ever take back her brother and also telling me I don’t know what the future holds. They invited me on a camping trip and I accepted before I became acquaintances with the brother. Turns out Chuck is going but the baby mama is not invited on the camping trip because there was bad blood about her not inviting anybody on his side of the family to the baby shower. Every single time I go over to their home to spend time with the parents and sister, I feel like I am being shoved to interact with Chuck which in return pisses the baby mama off even more. What makes me the most upset is I expressed how bad Chuck had hurt me in the past but they also know I’m seeing somebody now. The person I am seeing is fairly new, only a few weeks old but it is going really well although we are not official yet because I want to take things slow and learn about who he is. I want to stay friends with the parents and sister but I just feel like my feelings have been thrown out the window. I’ve stopped coming around as much and they’re beginning to notice me pulling away. I want to try to get out of the camping trip to further prevent any more drama between me and the baby mama but I don’t want the family to be offended because they are extremely excited about the camping trip and bring it up every time I’m over. It’s to the point I feel like the friendship is solely based on their son and getting rid of the baby mama. They constantly talk about threatening to kick her out and I just sit there and listen, not sure what to say. I really like my friend and her parents but if it comes down to my self worth I want to chose whatever makes me happy.

2024.06.09 14:48 disreceptful Medical bill advice

I'm asking my question for a likely incoming bill for my mother.
A couple of weeks ago we were traveling via car to another state. Not sure if that's relevant, but wanted to note this happened at out-of-state hospitals. My mom is diabetic. Everything was going fine when her dexcom (sugar level detection device) notified her of low sugar levels. We tried getting some soda and a snack (didn't help like it usually does), urgent-care since it was closest (they said they couldn't help, go to ER), then went to the closest ER.
ER does their thing, gets her sugar back up. They note her pulse is also racing and won't go back down. They are also concerned about her (lengthy) medical history. They need to keep her longer. They do a CAT-scan and MRI. Eventually they say that she has pneumonia and needs to be admitted for a few days and start her on antibiotics.
She was told that the hospital was full, but they have an agreement with another hospital to send patients to the other when that happens. They transport her by ambulance to the 2nd hospital and admit her. A few hours later a doctor there tells her she does not have pneumonia. They discharge her.
She has not received a bill yet, but she did receive a letter from the 2nd hospital that since she was sent there and it was medically unnecessary that she was going to have to foot 100% of the bill. I expect similar for the ambulance.
The question is: what does she do when those bills actually come? What are her steps?
I get the 2nd hospital, ambulance, and (probable) insurance point -of-view here. These things didn't need to happen. But someone who knows more than we do did make that call. My mom shouldn't be responsible for someone elses mistake.
This feels like a mess for my mom is just about to happen. Any advice is welcome.

2024.06.09 14:46 OilPsychological1080 What to do about my wife '43F' of 7 years who has changed so much im a '32M'?

I have been with my wife for 8 years now we recently had our 7 year wedding anniversary. In the beginning of our marriage and relationship things were amazing. My wife has been married twice before me and has kids with both previous husbands. I have also been married twice before her me mostly being young and dumb and trying to rush life, I have never had children with either of my previous wives. After we were married we decided to have children which I expressed to her I never intended on having children with someone I didn't plan to be with forever. I did not want my children apart of a broken home. Fast forward 6 years, I confronted my wife on the suspicion that she had possibly slept with one of my best friends before her and I ever knew each other this was a friend that we regularly were around and hung with. She assured me several times that she had never slept with him or done anything to him. Well not long after that I over hear my wife drunkingly talking to one of her friends telling her friend that she did sleep with him but didn't want me to find out. I know no one here knows me so I'll start off by saying we all have a past and that's fine I just ask not to be lied to and give and recieve complete honesty. I don't think anyone wants to be hanging out on a regular basis with there spouse hanging around someone they have slept with . I didn't call her out in it immediately but it ate away at me for weeks why would you lie about that I asked myself? Looking me straight in my eyes and lied over and over. A month or so goes by and my wife is drunk and I bring it up to her, once again she denies it but I told her i overheard her telling her friend so I know she's lying. Now I'm not the type of male who is very jealous and I definitely don't play the going through your phone game because I'm committed and I give my wife my trust. Well I when I confronted her on this issue I called her out on some other shady behavior, she was going through one of her photo apps and there was a video of her ex boyfriend masturbating. Clearly by this point I am infuriated. She swears she didn't know it was on there and she thought it was deleted. We are in a public parking lot inside the car when all this goes down she freaks out and jumps out of the car, I beg and plead for her to get back in the car as this is my children's mother and I would never do anything to publicly embarrass her. Well she ends up drawing a lot of attention to herself and gets arrested since she is drunk and not calming down and refuses to get back in the car with me so I can take her home. Fast forward about 3 months. My wife and I had been out to eat and on our way home got into a arguement. Once we arrived home she asked me "doing you like living here"? Which I thought was odd but I replied yes why wouldn't I? We finally have a nice house sitting on a farm with beautiful views it's everything Iv always wanted, she replied with "ok". She said she was going to go for a walk to clear her head and I said ok I was going to use the bathroom. I got out of the bathroom and I couldn't quit thinking why would she ask such a question she knows I love living here. I went to her car because there's a pistol in to glove box and I'm trying to cross the worst scenarios out of my head. The glove box was locked as it usually is and she took her car key with her. I ran inside and got the spare and went back to the car and unlocked the glove box and the pistol is missing. I immediately track her location and see she is in a near field. I jump in my truck and go to where she is at I find her sitting by A brush pile listening sad music with the gun in her lap. I am able to get the gun from her then she takes off running through the field towards our house. At this point it is like my wife has had a complete mental break down and idk what to do I start calling her mom and dad they don't answer I call her daughter who is in the military and In a different state freaking out telling her everything that's happening. My wife makes it home gets in her car and leaves and doesn't come back for hours I can't track her because she left her phone in the field where I found her. By this point I have gotten ahold of her mom and dad no one knows what to do. So we all come together once my wife arrives back home and tell her what ever is going on we want her to get help with it's therapy or medicine we don't care we are here for here and support whatever we have to do. Time goes by and things are starting to get normal again after my wife refuses to take medicine or do anything for help. We did start marriage counseling we had scheduled 4 meetings to start with the first meeting we did as a couple the second meeting I did by myself and the third meeting was supposed to be my wife alone and on the 4th meeting it would be us as a couple again. Well when it came time for my wife to do her meeting she kept rescheduling over and over and I finally called her out on why she wasn't taking this serious. She said she was but she just had this or that going on etc all I heard was excuses. Now since you don't know my wife she is a very successful female that makes great money and is in amazing shape and literally had the perfect body even after kids, you would never even known she's had a kid and built very desirable. I am 6' 2" and I go to the gym 5-6 times a week I have never cheated in any way form or fashion on my wife or done anything morally or ethically wrong towards our marriage I have always loved my wife and thought she was perfect. After these events started happening I started to question a lot of things and I found out my wife is as truthful as I thought she was. I don't believe my wife has ever cheated on me but she does seem to tell a lot of small lies or just flat out lies in general. My wife has in the last few years became psychotically jealous I'm not even allowed to eat with female coworkers and if I do I have to notify her and tell her where they are sitting in relation to where I'm sitting and what if anything they say to me. I have to tell her every time a female calls or text me etc. I do not have any social media but my wife has almost all of them and I don't care but I would like to point out she has male friends on her social media both married and single but I'm not allowed to be friendly or joke or anything even with the people I work with and my wife knows all of them but at the same time my wife also works in a coed environment and I don't limit her on anything she does nor do I ask or care because I love her and trust her. She has recently gotten mad that she shares her location with me but I don't share mine with her, I never asked her to share hers with me she just randomly did one day but since I don't do anything wrong and have nothing to hide I started sharing mine as well. Well that became a problem while we're both at work I would be question about why have I been at a particular location for 10 min or why have I been here or there etc and that got really old really quick. A few months go by and my wife starts a physical altercation with me I have never in my life hit a woman nor did I that night but I did keep pushing her off of me as I tried gathering my stuff for work so I could leave and go somewhere else. Long story short the police showed up I didn't have a shirt on and was covered in scratch and bite marks. Luckily I was able to leave and no one would go to jail, both our careers would've been ruined if either of us would've went to jail. After leaving that night I go to a hotel from that night forward I don't come home for 2 weeks I stay at hotels or family's house still in shock of how all this has came about. How close we were to losing everything we have including our careers over her behavior. I tell my wife I want time away from her to think things through. She tells me after two weeks of not sleeping under the same roof as her I need to come home because our children are asking a lot of questions I was skeptical but I returned and only for my kids I love my kids more than anything and during this 2 week period of being gone from them I would show up as my wife left for work and take them to school and pick them up and still see them and do stuff with them. I started staying back at home for my kids my wife and I still haven't slept in the same bed I am devistated on what to do about my marriage I can't handle a controlling and psychotically jealous wife anymore. This is not all that's going on in my marriage just some of the big things. I feel like I do most of the house work and I do all of the outside work. I clean, do dishes, do laundry etc I hate not having a clean and organized house. Lately things have been getting out of control with spending financially. All of this combined is driving me crazy. I told my wife 3 times I wanted a divorce but she begs me and tells me how everything can and will be better. She did start medicine for whatever is going on with her mentally but honestly not much has changed not like she promised. She still leaves the house and goes drinking with her friends and doesn't come home until late into the night etc. I don't know what to do I am beyond devastated to think about what a divorce would do to my kids 5 & 6. I can't stand the thought of them possibly having another father figure in their future. I have days where I feel strong enough to divorce and I know everything will be ok and be fine and then I have days where I question if I would be able to make it through something like that or not. I feel really confused on what to do my wife's behavior hasn't changed much and the only reason there's been any change at all is because I told her I wanted a divorce and I feel like she's trying to look really good right now and show me this "change". I worry what if I'm never happy again what if I never have this life of fun and happiness like I had before all these issues started happen for the last year and a half. I'm really stuck on what to do

2024.06.09 14:43 Alexis5899 I need your help/opinion/experience. (Ayuda)

You see, this is going to sound very contradictory, but throughout my life, I have had "paranormal" experiences. I have seen everything from shadows to deceased people making an appearance, orbs, and other things I can't explain. This has been happening to me since I was about 4 or 5 years old. I am currently 25, and from childhood until around 18, I experienced many "paranormal" situations, some more intense and disturbing than others. Although my family seems to have a history of these events, it makes me think. However, at the same time, I refuse to believe that these things have actually happened to me. But if there is something I hate more than being able to see these things, it's hearing them. Hearing them? Yes, that's what I want to address with this long introduction.
To those who believe in entities and such, have you ever heard incomprehensible whispers? Since I was 18, I hadn't had any paranormal experiences until around the age of 22-24. These recent events have affected my mental health, and while one of them might have been pure suggestion, the last one had no reason behind it.
Here's what I think was due to suggestion: my grandfather, in his last days or weeks before passing away, would tell me he saw a dog passing under the table in his house (I was taking care of him). I never paid attention to it because I knew the dogs were outside the house, and he described this dog as medium to large-sized. One afternoon, unlike before, I decided to look for this so-called dog, but unsurprisingly, I couldn't find it. Later that night, I had a dream that was vividly accurate to what was happening around me while I was dreaming. I was sitting, watching my grandfather, the TV was on a news channel, and suddenly this dog appeared. I was paralyzed and could do nothing but insult and try to scare it away. The dog bit my hand, and when I woke up a few seconds later, my hand felt cramped, a bit painful, numb, and tingling. Anyway, 90% of the incidents I've experienced have been at my grandfather's house (I used to sleep over from Saturdays to Sundays with him from the age of 4 or 5 until he passed away when I was 22).
When I was 16/17, I saw a very ugly woman looking at me menacingly through the glass of my door. I got scared and covered my head, and then I felt someone climb on top of me, preventing me from removing the covers. Since that day, I have never covered my head again. At 18, I worked at a 4-star spa hotel in a rural area where wealthy people would go to relax. On my first night, I was given a car to transport items needed by other employees, whether it was cleaning supplies or for the chefs. I also had to set the alarm for the event rooms. On my third day, around 9 PM, I was heading to an event room to deliver items because there was an event the next day. As I arrived with the cart (the event rooms had panoramic views, meaning the walls were made of glass), I saw a lady about 70-80 years old looking out from inside. I walked halfway through the room, greeted her as I passed the door, but got no response. The next day, the same thing happened. Only this time, when I turned around, the lady was no longer there, and I thought I was going crazy. Over time, I would be in places where the lights would turn on by themselves, I would feel scared to be alone, sometimes music would start playing on its own in other rooms, or I would hear noises in the kitchens. And this always happened when I was alone. On my last day of work, I told this entity, who other employees said was the owner's mother named Berta, "Well, this is the last time we see each other, but you won't be able to scare me anymore." Immediately after, I closed a metal hatch, and after taking a few steps, I heard a terrible noise as if someone had hit that metal door. Obviously, I was scared out of my mind, but I kept repeating to myself, "She can't win," and walked away slowly.

Now, in my new job, things have also happened... I work in a flour mill. One night, I finished my shift and had to stay for the next day. The power went out around 11 PM and didn't come back until 3 AM, at which point I went to take a shower. After a few minutes, I started hearing murmurs behind me that I couldn't understand. I thought they were my colleagues, but they weren't. Among these 3 or 4 voices, there was a female one, and that's when I realized I was actually alone. There are no women at my workplace, especially not at 3 AM. I let it go, thinking I was tired, but a few weeks later, around 7 or 8 PM, while I was using the bathroom, I heard these voices again inside my noise-canceling headphones. They are always incomprehensible, indecipherable whispers. Occasionally, a female voice calls my name.

...................................... ......................................
