2024.05.16 11:24 Writteninsanity Splitting Seconds: Chapter 1 - Blind Dates (The Superpower Soulmates Story)

It candidly sucked being surrounded by constant reminders that you’d lost the genetic lottery. Sure, it was easier than some people thought to get around the world without powers; it wasn’t like the government expected everyone to be a speedster or to be able to fly. Hell, a hundred years ago, nobody even had powers. The infrastructure was there. Life went on.
That said, staying cheery about the hand I’d been dealt was difficult. Enhanced perception was useful for a lot of things, from party tricks to always reading the fine print, but next to flight? Next to teleportation?
I’d gotten hung up on movement powers because I’d taken the bus to the bar, and the only superpower buses had was being late.
I was specifically at the bar for the sake of a blind date set up by my best friend; Todd was about two times my size and could throw a car across the street. His powers did nothing to help me with his current obsession with my dating life, but here we were. I supposed it was a fair obsession. I hadn’t been trying.
It honestly made sense that Todd had been keenly aware of romance since he’d met his soul mate. See, a strange thing with powers was that when you were around your soulmate, they were inexplicably stronger. Todd had met Soo-jung when she’d been on vacation in Crescent three years ago. They’d been inseparable since, and he’d been able to throw a car down three blocks instead of across the street.
Or so he claimed. Nobody was eager to volunteer their car for a demonstration, or anything else heavy and expensive, for that matter.
For my part, I hadn’t spent a lot of time guessing what would happen if I met my soulmate. It was a common train of thought for some, but I never found that it stopped at any fun stations. Instead, I indulged Todd’s meddling because he was my friend and bad dates at least made good stories.
“Gimme a sec, I’ll grab us another round,” Todd announced as he pushed out from our table. “Emma said she’s going to be here soon.”
“You bought the last one.”
“Yeah, now you can buy two in a row once Emma gets here and look generous. Think about it, man.”
“Sure,” I answered, but Todd was already walking away from the table and toward the bar.
Soo-jung leaned in. “You know he’s trying, right?”
“I know, maybe a little too much.”
“You don’t hear the half of it.”
“Oh, good.”
“I had to tell him to calm down when it came to buttering you up to Emma,” Soo-jung explained as she took a sip from her drink. “Sometimes I wonder about him.”
“I’m surprised he says anything nice about me.”
“He’d never say it to your face.” She watched Todd at the bar instead of looking at me during our conversation.
“Does that mean you’ll do it for him?”
“He trusts me to keep his secrets.”
“How about I suggest things and read your reaction?” I asked.
Soo-jung frowned in response before she pointedly rolled her eyes. She knew that reading reactions was one of my party tricks. If you couldn’t be powerful, you could at least read a room.
“Okay, fine. What do you know about Emma?”
“Her last name’s Tavish.”
“That’s it?”
“She works with Todd.”
“I knew that. He kept telling me she was a co-worker.”
“Todd thinks she’s cute.”
“He told you that?”
“No, but he has high standards for you.”
“That’s all the detail you have?”
“Todd’s not allowed to talk about work at hom- Hey, honey.”
Todd was back at the table holding all three pints in one arm; he passed one to each of us despite Soo being less than halfway finished with her current drink. Once he’d finished distributing, he turned to Soo-jung and asked her a question in broken Korean.
He’d been trying to learn, and he was still struggling. Not that I knew the language.
“Yes,” Soo-jung responded in English, “we were talking about Emma; no Korean around Toby. It’s rude.”
“I thought you wanted me to practice?”
“You can practice at home.”
“So we were talking about Emma,” Todd jumped back to the previous topic instead of discussing his inconsistent study of Korean. “Awesome woman, perfect for you, man.”
“What makes you say that?” I asked.
“Oh, she sucks too.”
“Ah, thanks.”
“He means powers-wise,” Soo-jung stepped in.
“So you do know something about her,” I pointed out.
“Something? I’ve been telling Soo everything since we got in the car to come here.” Just as Todd finished, he flinched. Soo had kicked him under the table. “But it wasn’t much, really.”
“What do I get to know?”
“I don’t want to taint your expectations.” He pushed his empty glass away, swapping it with the new one. “But can I be serious for a second?”
I considered it. “Sure.”
“She’s like my boss’, boss’ boss. So best behavior.”
“Wait. Seriously?” I leaned in. Todd worked for the CPRU, which meant that she had to be a heavy hitter if she was high ranked in the city’s power regulation department. “She’s—”
“Not quite.” He backpedaled. “We share a building. She’s straight DPR.”
I blinked twice at that. “Way to set me up to fail.”
“You should believe in yourself,” Soo cut in.
“Todd I w—”
“And she’s here.” Todd had turned his attention away from me and toward his phone. “Hope you’re ready to meet your soulmate.”
“Honey, don’t set that expectation.”
The bar’s front door opened, and I was the only one who could hear it over the atmosphere. I glanced over, and there she was.
She was stunning by any definition, but especially mine. Maybe it was a strange way to describe someone, but she looked beautifully meticulous, from brunette hair to olive skin, to her light blue jacket; everything was in place, and everything about her was gorgeous. Assuming that was Emma, I owed Todd big time.
“Okay, that can’t be her, right?” I asked Todd. After a second, without a response, I checked to see if he was waving at her, but he was stock still, a stupid grin plastered over his face. “Todd?”
Holy shit. The DPR had some crazy people on their roster, but this- I waved a hand in front of Todd’s face and snapped my fingers, then caught the sound of a single cautious heel clicking against the floor.
I stood up from the table and looked back at the door. She’d taken one step into the bar but had gotten caught in the same shock I had. “Emma?” I asked.
She snapped her attention to me -god, her eyes were- but she just looked confused.
“Toby,” I explained, “I’m Todd’s friend.” I motioned over to Todd’s still body and took the first steps to say hello. “This is really impressive. I didn’t think this was possible. It’s cool to meet someone wh—”
“I’m not doing this,” she said. “This is impossible. How are yo—”
“Trust me, this isn’t in my…” We stared at each other for a moment. Somehow, time stopped more than it already was.
“Holy shit.” We both said it at once.
“So this isn’t you?” she asked. Her eyes were still meandering around the frozen bar instead of staying in the conversation with me.
“No, it’s not,” I walked along her gaze and ended up against the bar counter, “did Todd tell you what my power was?”
“He just told me you wouldn’t mind having me around,” Emma answered, which somehow just brought up more questions.
“Enhanced perception,” I grabbed a drink off of the bar to see if I could; As soon as I touched it, it seemed to animate back to life. “What do you mean, ‘mind having you around’?”
“I dampen powers,” she explained, a little quieter than anything else she’d said, “make them weaker, hard to use. The technical definition is long and wordy so…” She sighed as she watched me slosh the beer around. “It’s a lot of trouble, really.”
“Probably good for work,” I offered.
“Pretty much the whole reason I have my job, but Callum wouldn’t admit that.” She approached, but there wasn’t an open seat near where I was standing, nor could we ask for someone to move. “Callum is—”
“Callum Rehsman, head of the D.P.R for the past six years,” I stepped in, “sorry, comes with the perception thing.”
“Honestly, I’m just glad I don’t have to explain it,” Emma took to leaning against the bar instead of walking over to a seat. She undid the top button of her shirt, which was probably too high for a date, anyway. “Emma Terish. Ring any bells up there?”
“No.”
“And you’re?”
“Toby Vander,” I put down the beer to offer my hand, and it froze as soon as I let go. We both paid attention to that instead of the potential formal hello.
“So this isn’t you.” Emma reached for the glass and picked it up; once she did, it animated just like it had with me. “And it isn’t me…”
I swallowed nothing. We’d both said holy shit for a reason, but it felt impossible to admit it. Wasn’t there supposed to be a — Well, something? Anything?
Then again, we were stopping time, and what else could you ask for?
“Do you want a drink, Toby?” Emma asked. She vaulted herself over the bar with a frankly shocking amount of grace for someone in a pantsuit.
“Uh, sure.”
“I’d ask what you were drinking, but we might have limited options,” she was considering her new vantage point from behind the counter.
I took the opportunity to grab the drink I’d left behind on the table. “I’ll use the one I had.” I tapped Todd’s hand for posterity, and nothing happened to him. “Any idea what this might—”
“No idea,” she answered without letting me finish, “but my job involves dealing with unknown powers, so…” She tried to use the soda-gun and swore when it didn’t work. “You learn to roll with it until people cooperate.”
“You still think I’m doing this?”
“I know it’s not me, and there aren’t many options here with us,” she said as she ducked behind the bar and came back up with a lemonade cooler, “but I came here for a date, and I plan to have one. Been a long week.”
I returned to the bar, finding a seat now that she was on the other side. “I just need to establish that this isn’t me. I’m not trying to—”
“If it isn’t you and it’s not me stopping time around us, then someone is giving us a very private venue for our first date.”
“Isn’t that nice?”
“It really is.” She took a sip of her drink, then pulled it away before she had time to swallow. “Shit. Do you have cash?”
“I’ll cover you.” She frowned at that; clearly she wasn’t satisfied with someone else paying for everything. “Plus, you’re serving me tonight. So…” That seemed to be enough plausible deniability to satisfy her. “Cheers?”
“Cheers.”
Throughout drink one, we were casting nervous glances around the paused bar; by drink five, we were laughing, just the two of us. Hours dripped by with the free beer… or they didn’t… It was hard to tell.
Emma added her sixth can to her pyramid and composed herself. “Okay, okay, okay. One second.” She took a deep breath. “This has been so much fun, but I told Todd I’d tell him when I got here so” — she needed another second to find her verbal footing — “can you stop this now?”
“Stop what?” I was halfway through a sip.
“This is the coolest power I’ve seen but—”
“It’s not me, I promise,” my insistence ended up sounding more like a drunk debate. The drunk part was accurate.
“So your power really is enhanced perception.”
“Yes.”
“Okay. Okay. You’re not lying.”
“What makes you say that?”
“Because that’s lame and—” She stopped herself. “Shit, sorry.”
“I am so used to it.”
“You wouldn’t say that drunk if you could stop time is my point,” she almost ducked down to grab another drink but thought better of it. “So, that makes us…”
We’d reached this impasse several times in the last hours. I scanned her. The lines on her face. The size of her irises. She was worried. Apprehensive.
So I said it first.
“We’re soul mates.”
She looked down and to the left, considering instead of answering.
“Why else would one of us display a power we’d never seen before? Unless you’re right and someone was stopping time for everyone but me and—”
“And the woman who’s immune to powers,” she cut in. “Maybe we are soul mates, but turn it off.”
“It’s not—”
“Toby, please.”
“I don’t—” I stopped short and instead tried even though I didn’t know how. My perception was passive. I didn’t get to choose whether I used it. Was there supposed to be a switch somewhere inside my head? Was I—
How long had it been at this point? Six, seven hours? We’d planned to meet pretty late and it would almost be light out by now. She was right. We had to get—
“I don’t know how,” I admitted, “if it’s me.”
Emma opened her mouth to say something, then reconsidered. Her perfectly manicured nails were digging into the vinyl of the bar top.
“Okay. It’s been lovely, but if you getting here started this then,” I said as I stood up, “maybe I just need to leave, and that will turn it off so we can figure out what’s going on.” I took the first steps toward the door.
“That’s a good plan,” she nodded along with what she was saying, like she was convincing herself, “I’ll reach out to you. It was an excellent date.”
“Let Todd know for me,” I added as I reached the door; a second later, I stepped into the chilled early-fall air. The door didn’t shut behind me, so I kept walking until I would have been out of eyesight.
Then I stopped.
Should I have turned around? What were the chances that she was my soul mate? What was I leaving behind if I didn’t see her again? It was a dumb thought, but the idea of walking away started gnawing at me.
But what choice did I have? In front of me, a couple was frozen in the middle of a quiet conversation on the way to the bar. Soul mates only affected one another when they were close by. I took a few more steps and started to sprint.
I was three blocks away when the world stuttered around me. My vision blurred, and the moonlight was shattered by the sun. I stumbled, almost crashing into a woman dressed like she was on her way to brunch.
Shit. I’d left my jacket at the bar, but—
I checked my watch; 8:06 AM.

2024.05.16 11:23 Zealousideal_Tank_96 TIFU by not telling my parents I'm on T

I've been on T for around 4 months by now, and I've gotten the typical changes, lower voice etc. and no one but my sister knows that I'm on T. I was planning to tell my parents, but y'know it's hard to bring this topic up all of a sudden and I'm real bad with words...also I thought it was kind of funny that I've been getting all these changes and no one noticed anything (or so I thought).
I'm in a restaurant with some of my family (without my sister) ordering food when all of of sudden my mom starts speaking VERY LOUDLY, "WHY DO YOU HAVE A MAN'S VOICE? WHY DO YOU HAVE A MUSTACHE?" (I barely even had any facial hair, I swear) "YOU'RE A GIRL, AREN'T YOU? GIRLS DON'T DO THAT. YOU BETTER STOP TAKING WHATEVER IT IS YOU'RE TAKING."
WTF. Everyone else at the table was completely silent. My eyes were frozen on the menu and I couldn't look at her or say anything. I'm surprised I didn't start crying but I was just THAT shocked. Honestly I wanted to get up and leave but we were on a short trip and I was in another country. I understand that she's worried and I should have told her sooner. The thing is, if she said that to me at home or anywhere not IN PUBLIC I would have told her the truth, but I couldn't risk starting an argument there, especially when I could be in danger. So basically I dissociated the rest of the trip and she and the rest of my family are acting like nothing ever happened? It's so awkward now and I don't know what to do. Anyway. Thanks for reading I guess.

2024.05.16 11:09 frenzysenpai 1500$ Budget

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?

2024.05.16 11:05 Insatiable_M0NK3Y My Hongkong experience (with lessons and tips for 1st timers)

Since 1st time ko, I booked the one with Disneyland and yung agent ko insisted na part ng package daw yung city tour, which will take half a day before we can take the Disneyland tickets.
For those planning on taking the doing a tour with Travel Agents. Try to look for those who will not insist on a city tour. Trust me it's not worth it. The tour will only be a way for the tour guide to sell their products to you and overprice po yung tinda nila. They also have a tsctic of taking you to their partner shops where 3x yung price compared sa local stores. Bili din kayo ng sim dun to contact the tourguide for your transpo from Airport to hotel and to Disneyland.
If you're going to book Disneyland, kulang ang half day. Insist on using the ticket for the whole day para maenjoy nyo lahat ng rides and events sa park. Worth it siya sobra.
Upon arrival in HK, we were given the 1dt day to explore, and luckily we have relatives working there and they were more that happy to meet us. They were the best tourguides ever, they taught us how to get our octopus card and how to use it. They even showed us stores na nka sale ang mga products nila. One UNIQLO store was havinga sale na after computation ko I realized na Php560 lang sa kanila yung 1800 sa SM.
When it comes to food may mga english menu ang local restaurants kaya turo-turo lang ng order kasi not everyone of the servers can speak english.
Highlight of the trip for me was Mongkok, parang divisoria lang satin. I love haggling kaya if you're like me then this part is for you. Tumawad kayo!
Tip1: Tawad lang ng tawad wag kayo mahiya kahit sumimangot yung nagbebenta. I managed to haggle a fountain pen with dragon design from HKD120 to HKD40 and managed to bring it down to 3 for 100. Napuno ko 2 na maleta ng chocolates and souvenirs like keychain, Fountain pen, figurines and Shirts, with just HKD500/Php3700 lang. Swak sa mga budgeterong travelers.
Tip2: Know your players, observe nyo yung nagbebenta, pag nakaupo yan at d ka pinapansin, don't waste your time na tumawad they will not budge. Tignan nyo yung lalapit talaga, sila yung open sa tawaran and will work with you.
Tip3: Walk away, I learned this from YT. The more you walk away daw, the more na ibababa nila prices nila.
Tip4: Learn when to stop window shopping and when to keep going. Pag may maganda na ang price then buy para d ka na pabalikbalik. Also check other stalls kasi may mas mababa pa ang price. I went through all the stalls before finding someone who sold me metal ref magnets at HKD20 per set of 5pieces.
Tip5: Do not show them online prices, insulto sa ibang nagbebenta yun. And the reason youre buying there is because you want to experience it. They will get offended and will curse you out.
Additional: Maglalakad ka, make sure na comfortable shoes nyo.
Pag group kayo and isa lang bumili ng sim and wala kayo budget for rent a wifi. Pasok lang kayo sa mga malls, they have free wifi po.
My advice are mostly for travelers who have a strict budget like me. Feel free to add your own tips and questions.

2024.05.16 11:04 fierce_kitsya When you start being a customer Karen?

Hi guys, I would like to open a discussion on when exactly a customer starts being a Karen. Because honestly, I feel that sometimes even if you are labeled as one it’s okay!
For context of where these thoughts are coming from, a few days ago my baby (M 5m) and I (F 29y) stop by the pharmacy on our way home from a long walk (we are located in Italy btw)
I’m wearing a pair of sporty high waisted trousers and a sports crop top from a Pilates set, nothing fancy, but a tiny bit of the upper part of my stomach is showing.
The pharmacist, as soon as I reach checkout and approach her, without even replying to my greeting, proceeds to criticize my outfit, saying exactly that I need to put a shirt on when entering the pharmacy because we are not on the beach (we are literally 500 mts from a beach but go on), but for this time she will LET IT SLIDE. I get so appalled at first that I don’t even know what to say, apart from saying that this is a top, not a bra nor a bikini top, but she repeats herself saying I can’t go around showing off my stomach.
10 minutes later I go back to return the item as this wasn’t sitting right with me and when I do the return with the same pharmacist I politely say to her that I didn’t like how I was treated and if the pharmacy has this request for their customers they should put a sign at the door (you know, same signs as when dogs are not allowed and stuff), not say it with such rudeness at checkout. She than snaps at me proceeding to let me know how this is common knowledge and respect for the society we live in and how I’m disrespectful and ill-mannered and stuff. I walk out to her rant, when she starting to raise her voice enough for people to start noticing and catching up on what’s going on.
As someone who is always in doubt if I’m wrong, especially for the fear of becoming a Karen, I later confirmed with my cousins wife who is also the pharmacist, that this behavior was not ok and absolutely unprofessional. She said people come to her in a bikini and see-through dress and she NEVER EVER thought of criticizing and saying something, it’s not her place to do it, people can wear what they want.
I now am planning a petty revenge on that, but stil wondering what the hell… I mean, we live in a world where women belittle and insult and shame other women for a little bit of skin? It felt like I was entering a church, not a fucking STORE!
Where is that line that transforms you from someone who just stands up for their rights and basic human respect becomes a Karen? I feel first people who worked retail where the one cornered, not being able to defend themselves… but now the tables turned completely and it’s the customer who at any moment when being attacked or mistreated can become a Karen and made fun of…
What you guys think?
To Charlotte: thank for you content, I got my partner hooked up as well as my 4 months old son, we love watching your channel ❤️

Elevating Elegance: Minimalist Interior Design Ideas for Landed Properties in Singapore
Minimalist interior design ideas singapore

Minimalist interior design ideas singapore

In the bustling urban landscape of Singapore, where space is often at a premium, minimalist interior design ideas singapore offers a breath of fresh air. It's not just about aesthetics; it's a lifestyle choice that promotes simplicity, functionality, and tranquility. This guide aims to delve deep into the principles and practices of minimalist interior design specifically tailored for landed properties in Singapore.

Benefits of Minimalist Interior Design for Landed Properties:

  1. Increased Functionality: Landed properties often come with more space, but this can quickly become overwhelming if cluttered. Minimalist design encourages a thoughtful approach to space utilization, ensuring every corner serves a purpose, thus enhancing functionality.
  2. Enhanced Visual Appeal: Singapore's climate can be intense, both in terms of weather and the pace of life. A minimalist interior, characterized by clean lines and a neutral color palette, offers a visual respite from the chaos outside. It creates a serene environment that fosters relaxation and calmness.
  3. Reduced Clutter and Stress: In a city where time is of the essence, the last thing anyone needs is to be bogged down by clutter-induced stress. Minimalist design eliminates unnecessary distractions, allowing inhabitants to focus on what truly matters and promoting mental clarity and well-being.
  4. Timeless Aesthetic: Trends come and go, but minimalist design endures. By investing in quality pieces and timeless design principles, homeowners can create a space that remains stylish and relevant for years to come, transcending fleeting fads.

Step-by-Step Guide to Achieving Minimalist Interior Design in Landed Properties:

A. Declutter and Simplify: Before embarking on any design endeavor, it's crucial to declutter and streamline the space. Assess each item's utility and sentimental value, and let go of anything that doesn't contribute positively to the space.
B. Choose a Neutral Color Palette: Neutral colors such as whites, creams, and soft grays form the foundation of minimalist design. They create a sense of space and light, making rooms appear larger and more airy—a valuable asset in Singapore's compact landed interior design properties.
C. Invest in Quality, Multifunctional Furniture: With space optimization being paramount, opt for furniture pieces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also serve multiple functions. Think sleek sofas with hidden storage compartments or extendable dining tables for flexible use.
D. Incorporate Natural Elements: Singapore's lush greenery offers ample inspiration for bringing nature indoors. Incorporate natural materials like wood, stone, and bamboo to add warmth, texture, and a touch of eco-friendliness to your space.
E. Maximize Natural Light: Sunlight is a precious commodity in urban environments, and Singapore is no exception. Maximize natural light by keeping windows unobstructed and using light, sheer curtains that allow sunlight to filter through while maintaining privacy.
F. Focus on Texture and Minimal Décor: Texture plays a crucial role in minimalist design, adding visual interest without overwhelming the senses. Experiment with different textures through rugs, cushions, and throws, while keeping décor minimal and purposeful to maintain a clean, uncluttered aesthetic.
G. Embrace Negative Space: Negative space, also known as whitespace, is the unsung hero of minimalist design. It provides breathing room for furniture and décor, allowing them to stand out and create a sense of balance and harmony in the space.
Landed interior design

Real-life Examples of Successful Implementation:

A. Local Interior Pte Ltd: Local Interior Pte Ltd is a trailblazer in minimalist interior design solutions for landed properties in Singapore. Their portfolio showcases a harmonious blend of functionality, elegance, and understated luxury, catering to the discerning tastes of their clientele.
B. Landed Arissa Cheo: Renowned fashion and lifestyle influencer, Landed Arissa Cheo, epitomizes minimalist chic in her transformed landed property. Collaborating with a team of designers, she has curated a space that reflects her impeccable taste and embodies the essence of minimalist living.

Conclusion:

In a city where space is a luxury, minimalist interior design offers a practical and aesthetically pleasing solution for landed properties in Singapore. By adhering to the principles of simplicity, functionality, and timelessness, homeowners can create a sanctuary that transcends the confines of urban living, elevating elegance and sophistication to new heights. So, whether you're embarking on a renovation or simply seeking inspiration, embrace the minimalist ethos and unlock the true potential of your space.

2024.05.16 10:59 Fabulous-Dentist903 Am I '35F' the asshole for ending my relationship with my best friend L '33F' years old, because of her boyfriend? Apologies in advance for the long story.

Hi Reddit,
I'm a 35-year-old female, and I’ve had a close and supportive friendship with my best friend, "L" (female, 33), for nine years. Recently, our friendship has become strained due to her boyfriend, now fiancé, who disapproves of me.
I've been married for 11 years, which is not conventional. My husband and I are very supportive of each other and have different interests, so we don’t hang out often except for certain activities. His job also makes our days off different. We’ve had some rough times, but we’re working through them, and no matter what we are always looking out for each other and never stop each other from doing what we love.
Because of my chill, open lifestyle, and bubbly personality, L's fiancé views me as a negative influence on her. even thou i know her way before he did.
Her boyfriend has made derogatory comments about me, which she only mentioned after I pushed her to tell me what was wrong. L and I usually spend much time together because we work together and sometimes go to the gym or grab food after work. On weekends, we do other activities like beach or horse riding, and I had no issue with him joining us. However, after a few times when he joined us at the beach, where I met friends for football and paddle boarding, he started criticizing me and my driving skills and the routes I take. Soon after, he stopped coming with us, and L started acting weird. Eventually, I discovered he had called me a “hoe in an open relationship.” and claimed I did not respect my husband or myself because I was too friendly and attract men, which he thought would ruin his relationship with L.
This situation led to a heated discussion and a temporary break in our friendship. I needed to reconnect with myself, especially because she was always fighting with him whenever she was with me, making me feel like a burden. After a months, I felt okay and resumed communication with her, explaining why I needed a break. However, we significantly reduced our activities together (her choice i guess).
L tried to mend the situation by encouraging my husband and me to socialize with them, hoping to show our positive qualities as a couple. My husband refused after learning about her fiancé’s disrespectful behavior. Honestly, I wasn’t ready to socialize with a hater, either. Her fiancé’s controlling behavior goes beyond his opinions of me. He discourages L’s interests, like singing, and displays other red flags that she seems to overlook (which me & others has motioned) to which she fired back that we are not supportive.
Despite L’s efforts to defend our friendship against her fiancé’s attempts to drive a wedge between us, he wanted her to choose between him and me. She claimed she tried to keep everything that mattered, but I was wrong. After our break, we were good for the next six months, even though we didn’t hang out as much (4 times). Whenever we did, she would fight with him and leave early or without saying goodbye, just leaving a message.
My birthday was approaching, and every year as a tradition, L and I have dinner together to celebrate before having a party with other friends. Two weeks before my birthday, I asked her to attend dinner on Friday or Saturday which my husband was to plan for us, she agreed. Two days later, she asked to confirm if it was happening and where. I said I would let her know once my husband confirmed the plans (this is very normal as i inform her always 1 day before). She kept asking the same question daily, which was unusual for her. Finally, she admitted that her fiancé wanted to leave the city for a few days and needed to know if our plans were confirmed. I canceled so she could go with him, but they didn’t go at the end. and that didn't feel great for me.
A week before my birthday, I asked her and other friends to keep their Sundays open for a pool brunch my husband was planning for us. Everyone, including L, confirmed, and she even added, "Count me in +1," assuming I’d be okay with her bringing her fiancé. I was mad but decided to let it go for her. A few days before the event, she messaged me saying she might be unable to come because she had a minor surgery and couldn’t swim. I was shocked she hadn’t mentioned the surgery before and asked why she didn’t tell me. She replied that she didn’t have to tell me everything and that I didn’t need to come. I was mad and asked if it was because of him. She yelled, accusing me of not understanding how much I hurt her by taking a break and moving on, while she didn’t.
She blamed me and our friends for not being supportive, even though we had helped her in the past. For example, she lived with my husband and me for almost a year rent-free when she was jobless only for 2 months. Her fiancé had issues with most of our group despite our welcoming attitude. She kept making excuses and gaslighting us for not being there for her since she got serious with this guy. I listened and asked how I could make things right. She dared to say "I needed to apologize for taking a break to care for myself and moving on while she didn’t". I calmly refused to apologize for taking care of my mental health, knowing how much I had worked on myself. If she wasn’t okay with that, it was her issue.
She tried to be nice the next day, realizing she messed up, but I was a bit cold with her as I didn’t expect her to say those things, especially knowing how much I cared for her and what I had done for her. The day before my birthday, our friend supposed to pick her up before picking me up. When I came down, she wasn’t there. I asked my friend if she was coming, and he said no. I messaged her, asking if she was coming or not. She said yes, but later, as her fiancé wasn’t ready. We went ahead, and three hours later (the brunch is for 4 hours), they finally showed up. Her fiancé didn’t say a proper hello and started complaining about wanting to sit at a table instead of the poolside beds we had booked. Despite arriving three hours late, she had the nerve to ask me to move to accommodate him. I refused and suggested they sit at the table if they preferred.
I saw them arguing a few times, and she kept coming back and forth between the beds and the table. When dessert was served, I decided to join them at the table to be the bigger person. Her fiancé picked up his phone and didn’t speak to anyone. When he decided to leave, he gestured for her to follow him and walked away without saying goodbye.
That was the last straw for me. She seemed okay with his behavior as if it is normal, and there was no way we could convince her that he was mistreating her. I messaged her, saying I didn’t blame him but blamed her for ruining my day and trying to force us to adjust our boundaries for him. She didn’t acknowledge my message. And the next day, she sent me a message to remove my brother’s car from her parking (the car had been parked there for two years without issue). I removed the car and stopped all communication with her and blocked her everywhere. we work with each other, so we are keeping professional.
FYI: This guy has told her in a message that I saw accidentally. Quote his exact message: "you don’t deserve to be a mother if you associates with this people (AKA - any of us), as we have no values and brings only shame and “cockroaches” to her perfect relationship.
I am disappointed and feel sorry for wasting so much time and effort on someone I never knew, apparently.
I want to make sure that i will not look back. hence am asking advice if you think i wronged her in any way?

2024.05.16 10:55 kyriochey Really struggling on the mental front.

Let me start by saying, i was sa’d as a child for many years by my father so i’ve struggled with mental health my whole life. before i got sick i was in a really good place mentally. probably the best i’ve been in my life. It started out as burn out. i was running my step dads company for him while he was out of state running and different business. so i was big boss, i could push around 1.5k lbs pallet of product and throw 50lbs boxes around like it was nothing. i started getting really sick and my step dad told me to stay home to “focus on my health” that same day he was training my direct employee on my job. i quit and went back to what i love doing, taking care of children. i was already sick and it was too late. by month 1 i was calling out because i spent every morning hugging the toilet. i ended up being evicted because my step dad decided to sue me saying i took “important documents” when i left. knowing i didn’t and knowing i didn’t have money to fight it. i lost my job (because i had to move, my job was very understanding about me searching for health answers) and my apartment. during that time i lost all of my weight. i’ve always struggled to keep my weight up and seeing how low i am now is so detrimental. i’m 98lbs on a bad day 103.8lbs is the highest i’ve been able to get since i’ve been sick. i went to countless doctors many i’m sure who didn’t believe me. i’m still unmedicated 11 months later even though i have been diagnosed. my last cardiologist said the holter monitor isn’t good enough and that i HAVE to do a tilt table, problem being all tests WERE 6 months out until one hospital stopped preforming TTTs without explanation meaning it’s now over a year out. The POTS clinic near me wants $7,700 upfront for an 8 day program, which i can’t pay and they don’t accept ANY insurance.
all of that to say, i’m really really struggling daily with the pain, my new disabled life. i cry almost everyday thinking about how peaceful it would be to not be in pain. i dont have a plan and i doynt plan to commit. but the thoughts are so loud and it’s different because before its just my feelings in my head but now it’s physical pain i cant get rid of. last night my boyfriend admitted he thought about leaving me when i gave him the option when i got sick and for some reason that hurt me even more, i’m just spiraling. i don’t know who else to turn to because i can’t hear “it’s going to be okay” anymore. especially when any second im awake im in pain.

2024.05.16 10:52 Kitchen-Customer9671 Mainland Greece ground transport and itinerary suggestions

Hello all, we have a trip to Greece next week and, despite usually being autistic about planning, I have been very busy recently and have not had proper time to plan this out. Specifically, I am a little worried because I'm having trouble finding much information (times, prices, reliability) in regards to on ground transport. I get that each region has its own bus companies with their own websites, and many forums I saw said to just buy tickets at the counter the day of, but that makes me a bit nervous. For example, I'm thinking, what if the tickets are sold out for the specific bus that I had planned to take and I already have hotels/tickets lined up for the next destination? Also, how frequent are the busses (not being able to find easy online time-tables is killing me)? As you will see from my trip outline below there are several days in which I would like to take an evening/late afternoon bus, so as to be able to spend one morning/ afternoon exploring one city and sleep in the next city, so as to repeat that strategy the next day. Any insight into all this is very much appreciated, and also any suggestions on the below itinerary would be great since we have only book the airfare in and out at this point.
Also, I know it's a little faster than some people would travel, but for us usually one or two days is enough time per city and we'd like to try to cover as much ground as possible in our short time. The main attractions are historical sights, as I am currently a master student in classical history.
25th arrive Thessaloniki 1pm, explore city.
26th day trip to Macedonian tombs
27th Thessaloniki - Athens (train?), Athens - Delphi
28th Delphi ruins, Delphi - Athens - Corinth (arrive by evening)
29th Corinth, evening to Nafplion
30th day trip to Mycenae, back to Naf
31st Naf - Epidauros
1st Epi - Athens (evening)
2-4th Athens. Fly out 7pm.

2024.05.16 10:40 R53_is_a_database I built the vector database AWS should have built

I love AWS's serverless offerings. There's a lot of ground you can cover with just a few services like Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, SNS, and SQS. But there's one thing that's always bugged me: there's no serverless vector database
When I think of serverless, I think:
  1. Managed
  2. Scales automatically
  3. And most importantly: pay for actual usage, like requests or storage, not for provisioned capacity
Which is why I feel AWS OpenSearch "Serverless" should be renamed AWS Elastic OpenSearch. With a minimum of 4 OCUs (OpenSearch Compute Units) to start, $700 / month is a lot to ask for a service that's supposed to be serverless
That's why I built SvectorDB, a serverless vector database designed specifically for serverless workloads, particularly those on AWS. It operates on a pay-per-request basis and offers native CloudFormation support, making it easy to integrate with your existing serverless applications
The API is streamlined, focusing on core functionalities: insert, update, search, and delete. Built with Smithy, the SDK will feel familiar if you're accustomed to AWS SDKs. And with built-in vectorizers, you can easily index and search vectors without having to host your own models
I'd love to get your thoughts and feedback on this project. Feel free to ask any questions you might have

According to the latest report by Expert Market Research (EMR), the global air conditioners (AC) market share is projected to witness substantial growth, with a CAGR of 6.8% during the forecast period from 2024 to 2032. This growth is primarily driven by several factors, including increasing urbanization, rising temperatures due to climate change, and a growing focus on comfort and quality of life. The market is expected to expand significantly, fueled by technological advancements, changing consumer preferences, and the adoption of energy-efficient solutions.
Air conditioners have become an indispensable part of modern living, offering not only relief from heat but also improved air quality and comfort. The evolution of air conditioning technology has led to the development of highly efficient systems that consume less energy while providing superior cooling performance. One of the primary drivers of market growth is the increasing demand for air conditioning solutions in emerging economies, where rapid urbanization and rising disposable incomes have led to a surge in construction activities and infrastructure development. As more people migrate to urban areas, the demand for residential air conditioning units is expected to escalate, driving market growth.
Furthermore, the growing awareness about the importance of indoor air quality and its impact on health has led to a greater emphasis on air conditioning systems that incorporate advanced filtration and purification technologies. Consumers are increasingly seeking air conditioners that not only cool the air but also remove pollutants, allergens, and other harmful particles, thereby promoting a healthier living environment.
Moreover, government initiatives and regulations aimed at promoting energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions have played a significant role in shaping the air conditioning market landscape. Incentives for the adoption of energy-efficient appliances, stricter energy performance standards, and the phasing out of ozone-depleting refrigerants have driven manufacturers to innovate and develop eco-friendly air conditioning solutions.
Another key trend driving market growth is the integration of smart technologies and connectivity features in air conditioning systems. The advent of smart thermostats, IoT-enabled devices, and mobile applications has transformed the way consumers interact with their air conditioners, allowing for remote monitoring, scheduling, and energy management. 2024.05.16 10:23 ChikyChikyBoom Scientists Unveil Plan To Create Biocomputers Powered By Human Brain Cells

Despite AI’s impressive track record, its computational power pales in comparison with that of the human brain. Scientists today unveil a revolutionary path to drive computing forward: organoid intelligence (OI), where lab-grown brain organoids serve as biological hardware. “This new field of biocomputing promises unprecedented advances in computing speed, processing power, data efficiency, and storage capabilities — all with lower energy needs,” say the authors in an article published in Frontiers in Science.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has long been inspired by the human brain. This approach proved highly successful: AI boasts impressive achievements – from diagnosing medical conditions to composing poetry. Still, the original model continues to outperform machines in many ways. This is why, for example, we can ‘prove our humanity’ with trivial image tests online. What if instead of trying to make AI more brain-like, we went straight to the source?

2024.05.16 10:04 Hot_Bandicoot_3839 Beginner's Guide to Configuring TrueNAS

Beginner's Guide to Configuring TrueNAS
https://preview.redd.it/m45mcme8vq0d1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0d836ec3e7d12f6ae66df3e737f1d16c7940b5da
Do you require a gadget with a large amount of storage capacity? TrueNAS is a storage software that is excellent for safeguarding documents, music, video, and photo information. It also makes sharing and accessing it from many devices simple. We made a guide to help you set up TrueNAS CORE on your computer and get your TrueNAS data back. You will also learn what kind of PC TrueNAS CORE needs to be set up.

TrueNAS System Installation Requirements

Many various system setups are compatible with TrueNAS. Still, the system requirements for TrueNAS CORE may be different for you based on how your equipment is set up and what you plan to do with your machine.
Needs include:
Processor: A two-core AMD x86_64 or an Intel 64-bit processor will do.
RAM: For a better experience, at least you should have 8GB of RAM.
Storage: You need sixteen GB SSDs or at least two identical hard drives to set up TrueNAS.
Networking: WiFi is incompatible, hence you need an Ethernet cable.

How Do I Configure TrueNAS for Data Recovery?

Initially, TrueNAS CORE installation could appear difficult. Here we listed all of my experience to facilitate your job. Run TrueNAS with little to no problems at all. Steps below guide you through the TrueNAS setup.
Step 1. Construct a bootable disk or include the installer on a device.
Obtain the software and install it on the TrueNAS-enabling device. Installing can then begin. Two approaches are mentioned below to accomplish that:
  • Include it into something.
  • Make a bootable drive.
Get the TrueNAS CORE installation tool and put it on a DVD or USB stick so you can add the program to a device. Next, connect the unit to your PC.
To make a drive that works, you need to use a tool to copy the setup software to a USB stick and then set up the stick to boot. In general, the second way is faster and easier than adding the software by hand.
Step 2. Restart the computer and choose the installation drive as the startup drive.
Upon completion of the previous step, restart the system.
Once more the installation options will appear. Hit Enter or click OK to start configuring the TrueNAS core.
Next, you'll see the TrueNAS computer setup options. Click Install/Update to initiate TrueNAS CORE setup.
A list of the available drives is displayed on the following screen. Go for the boot drive instead of the file disk. If you're not sure which one is the boot device, check the disk sizes. Usually, the start device is smaller than the storage disk; to access it, use Space and the arrow keys.
There will appear an alert window. Go ahead and hit Yes and OK.
Step 3. Start over to start building.
Next, restart TrueNAS CORE so that you can start setting it up. Any changes you make to TrueNAS while it is still being set up need to be restarted for them to take effect.
You have to restart because not doing so will undo all the changes you made during the download. The device will also start up with the new software and operating system.
Step 4. Run the application.
After the computer restarts, proceed with the installation and configuration of TrueNAS.
Selecting between UEFI and BIOS booting TrueNAS CORE is now your task. The software will select one of the two depending on how you configure it. For those who are unaware, most of the time UEFI functions best with newer hardware and BIOS with older hardware. Furthermore influencing the choice will be the operating system and software requirements.
Finishing the process should just take a few minutes.
Step 5. Hard Restart and Delete the Install Communications
When installation is finished, a message will appear advising you to restart the machine and delete the installation files. To restart, click OK before removing the program CDs. Then you're through.
