The Enchanting Lights of the Aurora

The Enchanting Lights of the Aurora

The aurora, a celestial ballet of light dancing across the night sky, has captured the imaginations of people around the world for millennia. Known as the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis in the northern hemisphere and the Southern Lights or Aurora Australis in the southern hemisphere, these natural phenomena are not just a visual marvel but also a complex scientific event that speaks volumes about the interactions between the Earth’s atmosphere and the solar wind.
What Causes the Aurora?
The story of the aurora begins with the sun, which emits a constant stream of charged particles known as the solar wind. When these particles encounter the Earth’s magnetosphere, they are drawn towards the poles by the planet’s magnetic field. As they collide with gases in the Earth’s upper atmosphere, they create the dazzling light displays known as auroras
https://preview.redd.it/v2usm6ypst0d1.jpg?width=351&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=20d14c77acb83a97b5b3a129cdc353f66383605f
The colors of the aurora are determined by the type of gas molecules involved. Oxygen molecules, about 60 miles above the Earth, produce a green or brownish-red color, while nitrogen produces blue or red colors. The blending of these colors can create a spectrum that ranges from green to red to purple, painting the sky with an otherworldly glow.
The Best Places to Witness the Aurora
Auroras typically occur in the auroral zone, an area 3° to 6° wide in latitude and at a distance of 10° to 20° from the geomagnetic poles. The best places to witness this natural wonder are high-latitude regions close to the Arctic and Antarctic circles. In the northern hemisphere, countries like Norway, Iceland, Canada, and parts of northern Russia offer some of the best views. In the southern hemisphere, the aurora can be observed from Tasmania, New Zealand, and Antarctica.
The Cultural Significance of the Aurora
Throughout history, the aurora has held significant cultural importance for many indigenous peoples living in auroral regions. The lights have been featured in folklore and mythology, often attributed to spirits or deities. For example, in Roman myths, Aurora was the goddess of dawn, bringing the light of day to the night sky
Modern Understanding and Research
Today, scientists study auroras to understand the complexities of Earth’s magnetosphere and how it protects our planet from solar radiation. Space agencies like NASA continue to monitor and study auroras, not only on Earth but also on other planets in our solar system, providing valuable insights into the workings of the universe.
Conclusion
The aurora remains one of nature’s most splendid and enigmatic spectacles. Whether viewed from a snow-covered hilltop in Scandinavia or the icy expanses of Antarctica, the aurora is a reminder of the Earth’s place in the solar system and the dynamic forces that shape our celestial surroundings.

2024.05.16 19:45 Easy-Perception-4402 29 [M4F] #Germany - Are you struggling with life? I help!

Do you spend a lot of your time day dreaming what life would be like with your perfect match? Would that life consist of lots of quality time spent together, shared hobbies, travelling together, supporting each other and sharing not just the good times? Are your passions a weird conglomerate of sciency and artsy topics? We might just be a match. No, this is not an infomercial.
What makes finding my match somewhat difficult i,0s that my personality is all over the place, I can't really be put into a box and I dream of finding someone I'm deeply compatible with. I have a PhD in physics/math and work in a related field, involving IT and programming. My take on life is rather critical, rational and I'm not religious. BUT I'm also very by morals, emotional in certain aspects and my biggest aspiration in life is having a happy, fulfilling relationship where we are inseparable, each others best friend and more. A soulmate sorta thing if you wish, even though souls obviously don't exist...right?
Soo what are my passions that we could hopefully share together? I have to get the cliché out of the way first, I'm really big on films/tv shows/video games/manga and some books. It's not just something I consume to overcome boredom though, I'm extremely interested in stories and the art of story telling. My tastes are varied and something that would be fun to discuss, some of the things I like:
The point being, talking about stories, analysing movies together or writing our own video game plot (don't worry I already have an amazing idea, but not so good at writing dialogue)/short stories is a big thing I'd like to share in a relationship.
Still with me? Some other things I enjoy:
Phew ok, not done yet. I need to say something about the type of romantic connection I'm desiring as it's somewhat off the norm. I want to spend a lot of time with my partner. A lot. That doesn't even mean constantly engaging with each other, but just being around each other, checking in on each other, leaving little notes, generally what they would call being clingy. Maintaining a happy relationship should be the number 1 priority in your life, as it would be for me. I would never neglect you in favour of other people or obligations and expect the same in return. Location wise would be great if you're in Germany of course, but really doesn't matter that much to me. This would just be an awesome motivation for me to travel somewhere and as I'm very flexible in my day to day life, I would make a visit happen sooner than later.
Appearance wise, 183 cm, caucasian, slimish/fitish/averageish build, short dark brown hair and eyes. Finally, I'll finish off with an arbitrary list of traits that describe me and I'm simultaneously seeking out in a woman: sense of humour (did that come across...like, at all? Writing this post I felt like it was all rather serious at times, because I take this seriously, but my style of communication is more light hearted, being silly together, not taking everything too seriously, but being able to talk maturely should the situation require), responsible, curious, reliable, trustworthy, loyal, honest to a fault, dedicated, creative, self-aware, honest again because it's important, thoughtful, caring, kind but not a pushover, enjoys arguing/debating, romantic, sweet. If you have a (very?) k1nky side that would be the cherry on top, but it's not a must and all in due time.
Have a virtual cookie for making it this far. Now don't be shy and send me a PM already, telling me what's on your mind. If you send a chat and I don't reply, send a little PM as a follow up in case the chat didn't work.

2024.05.16 19:36 Littlebotweak My S Clearance Timeline OR How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Process... (with LOI SUCCESS)

Ok, love is not the right word, I just wanted to stick with the spirit of the Sellers inspired title. Here's the timeline, sordid details following:
5/8-5/24/23 - Job offered, finger printed, E-qip done, soft credit pull, no interim 7/?/23 - Interview scheduled with investigator, this was probably mid month, my in-laws were in town 8/14/23 - follow up interview w/ the same investigator, by video 10/20/23 - received LOI for things previously discussed with investigator - immediately retained safetyblitz44 4/24/2024 - finally turned in all documentation required by LOI
I waited 3 weeks to contact the FSO from the hiring company. I received a call back from the program manager pretty fast - they profusely apologized that I should have been notified 11 months ago that they were on a hiring freeze and could no longer offer me the position.
I let them know that this was OK and understandable - BUT, that I had still been in contact with DCSA, had an interview, LOI, etc. and that regardless my case should reflect that. They asked me to send my resume and told me they'd call back.
Not even 2 hours later, they call and let me know that YES I have been adjudicated favorably BUT that's when the company dropped my case. I will remain in this status for about 6 months total, during which time I need to find a job to activate me. This is not the end of the world, the PM referred me to a sub and I'm interviewing next week and I am reaching out to my network - someone is going to pick up a software engineer ready to be cleared, that's probably a non issue. I'm very lucky to find myself in this position at all.
Long version...
I was unemployed from late 2021 to early 2023 when I finally bit the bullet and went back to cleared work. I'm a software engineer and I've been cleared before, I didn't think it would be a huge deal, but I was wrong.
I have filled out the SF-86 a lot, I'm in my 40s and it started in the army in 1999. I have had cleared roles without much issue but I never really had red flags either.
This time I had some IRS issues and I checked "yes" to the having used drugs box. It was weed and I had stopped during the pandemic - it was a social thing and the pandemic sucked all of those aspects right out of it. Sharing seemed to make sense til then and I was never one to sit around getting high alone so it naturally tapered off more than a conscious effort to quit. But, I have no intention of doing it again, so giddyup.
When I met with the investigator for an interview it became clear why I hadn't gotten an interim this time but not why it never came up before. They asked me about "an arrest in March 1997" and all I could say was "HOLY SHIT, THAT'S ON THERE?!"
Now, having re-read the SF-86 a ton, I still can't quite figure out where I would have listed this other than at the end because all of the arrest questions from rev 2016 are "past 7 years" but, some way, somehow I will list this in the future because this was 26 years prior when i was 15.
When I was 15 I was at a bus stop by the school in my city when a friend drove by and stopped - a bunch of us got in. I was sitting shotgun and saw the vehicle we had just entered had no ignition and realized it was stolen and we were all going to get arrested, which we did. No charges, none of us stole a car, including the driver - she was riding in a second hand hot car - we were just in the thing. It was teenage stupidity all the way down. I never thought of it again other than as a hilarious anecdote because we were arrested and released to our parents and that was the end of it til that interview! LOL!
The investigator told me in no uncertain terms that this was why i needed an interview. They said they would have never had to do it otherwise. But, I'm still not sure where I would have listed it or what would have made me think of it. They showed me the FBI report that just said it was an arrest assumed felony. There's an EVER question about being charged with a felony but I was not charged. That was no issue after I explained it and I assume the FBI finally followed up with the rest of their report.
Otherwise we just talked about the stint with MJ use, long over, my IRS issues, and I brought up a bench warrant that I had in another state but explained there was really nowhere on the form to list it and that it was for an unpaid ticket from the year 2000 (misdemeanor) with no statute of limitations. I had only found out about it right before the pandemic, it became a low priority real fast. Same with the IRS stuff. I had stopped filing for a bunch of years just because I couldn't afford the 1099 I had been on one year. When you don't file once it's easy to keep not filing! But, in 2021, before the layoffs, I had hired an accountant to help me get it all straightened out. I just needed to file the missed year but I wasn't sure if that was the right move or not. I owed but I was broke and dealing with layoffs plus the IRS hadn't said anything - it's only human to hope they never do! LOL. I never did find any real sources to corroborate a time limit on failing to file, though, so I didn't really want to push that envelope.
When I got the LOI it was only for the 2 tax years I hadn't filed and the bench warrant. Just the words "bench warrant" told me I should get a lawyer and I did. Getting those tax returns processed and getting the warrant lifted took 7 months. Each time a deadline came up from DCSA I submitted everything I had - screenshots, correspondence w/ the attorney working on my bench warrant and the state the case was in - and each time they extended me further.
I ended up needing 2 lawyers - I initially hired the user mentioned above and they found someone who was bar'd in the state I needed. The bench warrant was for an unpaid parking ticket (that I could swear on a stack of bibles was paid at the time, but I can't prove that, so). It took several months to get proof. Same with the IRS stuff. I sent a large payment on the 2nd of January and it took til April to fully reflect on my account. It was excruciating. If you owe taxes and it's a one off, do yourself a favor and call the people who can waive the penalties. I was able to make reasonable payment arrangements online and THEN get 1/3 of my bill cut.
Mainly the lawyer made sure my "final" packet - the one I turned in for the first due date with all of my statements - was clear and correct and would reflect the steps I was taking. Wording on the LOI response is crucial to success along with proof - they will help make sure you are addressing the issues as requested by the LOI without overthinking it. I'm not a terrible writer but that isn't exactly the point. Once I hit that juncture I really wanted to be as sure as I could be that I was doing the right things. They can also help you put your case in perspective - they have experience with weirder or worse than yours. Plus, if you found them on reddit you can respond to them in gifs and memes and know they'll get it. All told for 7 months of counsel, an entire additional lawyer, and including all fees from that process, this cost $2500 and my retainer remainder was refunded as soon as we closed. No hearings or court time necessary, everything was remote and asynchronous.
One of the best parts of this outcome is how great it feels to know I'm truly "squeaky clean" again. It doesn't take too long, depending, I guess. If you look at my account you'll see one of the last weed plants I grew in 2015. Cultivation is one of those "in the past 7 years" questions and I was in year 8 which I may always get a silly kick out of. I did let the investigator know as it was relevant to some other info - but, I'm a horticulturalist at heart, which is also fully reflected in my hobbies. I have no desire or need to grow weed again but it's a thing I have done and have experience with which is nothing to be ashamed of.
Be honest - with yourself AND investigators. Don't be too squeaky of a wheel when it's taking a long time - sometimes that's a really happy accident. Get another job while you wait or keep your current one. File those late taxes now, not later. Old warrants for misdemeanors are cheaper than you think. Sometimes stuff really does come up that you had no reason to list but it isn't necessarily the end of the world.
Oh, and I've been naked on the internet and no one cared.

2024.05.16 19:30 Throw4away477 30 [M4F] Italy/Anywhere Looking for company

I am not giving up just yet, I know you are out there and wherever you are, I really hope this reaches you. There were times, when I was younger, where I used to cry myself to sleep pretty often, I've always felt lonely, insecure, like I am not good enough, not cute enough or smart or funny like everybody else. That shit hurt back then and made me even more reserved and insecure. I also dreamed about something real, authentic yet simple and genuine. I don't cry anymore, it's very rare. I am starting to worry about the fact that I am accepting it...and it's scary ngl. I still hope to find someone I can be myself with; someone I can rely on for emotional support; someone who can be patient and kind; who can be my best friend; whom I can trust fully; whom I can be proud of for their successes; who loves a lot of cuddles and being bothered a little; who doesn't mind someone who is a bit clingy; who will force me to do stuff when I lack the motivation to; who will laugh at my stupid jokes; who will go on adventures with me; who will smile at me when I am sad knowing that their smile melts me all the time; who is not afraid to tell me what she thinks; whom I can have conversations about all kind of topics; who is not afraid to be themselves. I could go on lol
Let's talk a little about me starting with a physical description. I am 174 cm tall ( 5'8''), white skin, black hair and brown eyes. I workout at the gym regularly and I eat healthy.
I am nerdy and I like videogames: I am a sucker for souls games, bg3, the witcher, read dead redemption 2, ff, metal gear, nier automata, indie games etc... Mostly single player but I played a lot of overwatch in the past. Recently I started playing Civilization VI ( very new to the game) and fell in love with the main soundtrack which is entirely in italian and inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci and his "dream of flight" (literal name of the song). Which...reminds me of someone who also dreams about something that seems impossible...😂🥺
I love animals (I have a dog), nature, I am usually a homebody and an introvert but I wouldn't mind doing outdoors activities with the right company. I watched a few anime, old movies and tv shows; always open to recommendations :) I am calm, patient, a bit awkward and I literally can't lie because you can always tell when I am or I am just too stupid to make up a good lie 😅 I am not big into politics or religion but I am left leaning and an atheist.
As for you: just be yourself! But please, write something about yourself if you decide to reach out...for some reason lol

2024.05.16 19:21 ProfessionalCaptain4 What villains can we see in the Sonic cinematic universe?

The Sonic franchise had a large gallery of villains, both the original saga and the Archie Comics and IDW comics, there are many to choose from to adapt them in the movies or series of the Sonic cinematographic universe.
Let's talk about what villains I could or would like to see in the future of SCU
One of my favorite things about the Archie and Idw comics is their excellent variety of villains outside of Eggman.
in Archie: we have warlords, wizards, dark gods, alternate universe doppelgangers, aliens, a corporate mastermind, and then some.
IDW: we have two traumatized cyborgs and a group of criminals
Scourge :I love because, well, could anyone resist taking such an inherently good character, and turning him evil? I love the dynamic he and Sonic shared, being able to get into each other's heads, but ultimately staying themselves. It is true that it would be super repetitive to have a hedgehog that is an evil counterpart to Sonic, let's go (let's have Shadow) of course it can make Scourge see that unlike Sonic, he was not afraid, even so he used his powers to obtain power and control in his planet it would be perfect to see more hedgehogs than just being limited to sonic, amy, shaodw and silver
dr Finitevus :I always loved him; he wasn't overwhelmingly powerful, although he had unique abilities and intelligence. It was his knowledge of the world that allowed him to pit the world against the heroes or the heroes against each other. When he didn't need to be somewhere, he just wasn't there. He fought proxy wars by recruiting other characters to, knowingly or unknowingly, carry out his orders. It was a refreshing change of pace from Sonic's usual bad boy.
It will be an excellent way to get more out of the echidna lore, what a bad taste the knuckles spinoff left in our mouths, this tribute already deserves to adapt its entire arc in the comics to the SCU since it would be great to see more echidnas and give it a try. the treatment you deserve
Enerjak: a character full of energy and creativity with a cool and creative design, I always liked this character and he generated some pretty good plots and conflicts. It would be another option along with finitrevus to be a personal threat to Knuckles and the others on how Knuckles should confront one of his species and prevent him from following the steps of going astray.
Mammoth Mogul:I like his powers, his suit and his elegant way of speaking. But I don't think he has much personality. and he is conceited, he keeps escaping from justice and causes problems for Sonic, a mafia lord would be perfect in a detective plot either with the chaotix or with sonic it is also related to the chaos emerald of course they could change this that He looks for them because they are a legend
metal sonic :Its design needs no explanation. When he is in control, he can be as smart as Eggman and as terrifying as one of Sonic's god-level villains.
His rivalry with Sonic has a lot of depth. Thematically they are natural rivals of the franchise, nature versus machine, but also in terms of characters, one is a free soul and the other is in a prison of multiple things.
Metal has very personal problems derived from his rivalry with Sonic. His identity is built around the idea that he is the best version of Sonic, he is the real Sonic, but every loss shows him otherwise and all he can do is face it and try to say that Sonic is the copy and Metal is the real one. . But no matter how strong he is, how fast he is, even if those traits are more than what Sonic is capable of, he loses. That's the tragedy of him, he's in a cycle of not accepting reality and he's punished for it and so far we've gotten great ways to show that character. We got healthy parts of his character, scary parts, interesting parts and sad parts. And the good thing is that, unlike other rivals, he is a villain, not an antihero or a redeemed character, a villain who can be explored without being the good guy. He's also had some amazing boss fights over the years. This would be a perfect character to take on Eggman's legacy and use it for your own benefit.
Dr. Starline: Amazing villain that you love to hate, he played his role to perfection and left lasting effects long after his death in the form of the equally good Surge and Kit. What I like most is that he could have easily been like everyone the other sidekicks and try to one-up Eggman, but instead he still idolized him and was ultimately used to cement how good Eggman is as a villain.
He would be another perfect candidate to take Eggman's place and he is a thousand times better than Agent Stone or any generic Eggman assistant who only exists to provide a moment of comedy that is not funny.
The metarex and the dark oak (sonic x)
I think the writers did a great job creating a new arc for sonic x
It's a fun sci-fi take on Sonic that gives us a galaxy-spanning adventure. You still have individual episodes that are reminiscent of your weekly episodes of Star Trek or whatever that have their own independent stories on individual planets, but also the overall story of the season is still moving forward. I feel like this is the best way to do episodic television.
I love the idea that we have a planet full of animals, but in Sonic's universe there are also plants.
The plot twist of Metarex being formerly plant people (Seedrians, if I remember correctly) turns them from this vague threat into a completely personal threat, as we've had plenty of time up to that point to see Cosmo become part of the Team Sonic. .
It's always good to have that underlying message that plants and animals can get along despite their differences. In today's world, many people have yet to discover the real-life equivalent.
Plus, you have the entire Tails and Cosmo arc and the culmination at the end. Don't lie, you always cry too!
prefect official as the final boss of the sonic franchise
Merlina :Merlina doesn't understand that death is a natural part of life, which is why she is afraid of it. This is a real fear called thanatophobia, but it is a fairly extreme case. Anyway, after defeating her, Sonic consoles her by telling her to make life worth living with the time she has, thus resolving her internal conflict and also ending her character arc. This type of deep writing is something that Sonic Adventure to Black Knight excel at.
Well, that was all, write in the comments which villain from the Sonic franchise you would like to see adapted into SCU in the future. Leave your opinions in the comments. I would love to read them.

2024.05.16 19:21 LindenSwole Practices - Smaller Groups vs Full Team

I'm looking for some wisdom/counsel here: I coach a girls 10U Rec team, moving to 11U in the fall - most, if not all of, the 10U girls are returning.
For the last couple of years we've usually run practices where the girls are split into two groups. Half does one kind of drill while the other half does another drill, then they rotate, before ending practice with a scrimmage.
I'm thinking about pivoting in the fall to have this be almost entirely full-team drills instead. I'm not entirely sure what it would look like yet, but it seems like having the team all together for all of practice could help their continuity in games as the season rolls on. I think they're now in the age of understanding this is a Team Sport whereas prior to these 11U/12U years, it is really about just them. As they get older, their understanding of the game will naturally broaden, so I'm thinking this could be a good time to make that move.
Would love some feedback on this or experience from those coaches who have coached for awhile through this time (I started at 8U, 4v4, and want to give them the best shot at continual improvement while also keeping this fun and engaging).

2024.05.16 19:20 Adventurous-Slide670 Working through it.

Hi everyone. This is super long, and I apologize in advance.
I first want to acknowledge that I understand cheating as a no go, inexcusable, and completely disrespects anyone's boundaries and trust. It is so painful, and has happened to me in previous relationships. Before, I would stay, be the doormat, only for it to happen again. This was in the high school years when we were all just trying to navigate... everything. But now it's happened to me again as an adult during a 3 year long relationship.
A couple of months ago, my partner admitted to cheating on me a year ago when being wasted / blacked out. He was at a party and ran into some random person from HS. Alcohol is no excuse, but for him he has an overall problem with drinking rather than it just being isolated. It was a problem in our relationship for a while. The lying was ridiculous, childish, and unacceptable. It's total Jekyll and Hyde. After he cheated, he drank himself to death over it in silence. He blocked her and never spoke to her again. He barely spoke to me. We didn't have very positive experiences together and we stopped doing as much. His guilt couldn't bring him to tell me. He says it happened during a period where we were not intimate and he was craving, but that it happened for a couple of minutes before he stopped it, knowing it was a choice HE made (a terrible one), regardless of what happened leading up to it.
The moment I found out, I left and stayed with my parent for a month or so (it would've been longer had my parent's living situation not changed so drastically). I wanted to regain my power, sense of identity, and give myself the space to heal while giving him the time to really sit with what he did.
He is profusely apologetic, going to AA, therapy, and getting back on medications. I've seen this man lie enough about drinking to know when he is being truthful and when he isn't. He says he was childish in handling things, has never made an excuse for what he did, and fully acknowledges the work that has to be done to regain my trust. When he says he won't do it again, I do believe him: not in blissful ignorance, but as someone who recognizes that the rest of our relationship, and who he is as a person, is worth working through this terrible situation. He has fully owned up, saying he needs to grow up, man up, and be responsible for his actions. He told the people he respects the most in his life exactly what he did. He says he can't even believe that the choice to cheat even became an option.
We have worked on developing better habits for ourselves and our relationship; going on walks, going to therapy both on our own and as a couple, reading instead of melting behind our screens and playing games... We are just learning how to be best friends again, and shockingly it's been easier than I expected. Our relationship was never difficult and relatively problem-free before this.
I am not compromising my boundaries. I am not letting him disrespect my comfort, my feelings, or my time. I am also going to therapy to learn how to cope with this. I fully acknowledge that I do not need to forgive him, not until / if I am ready.
Things have been going well. A podcast by Mel Robbins helped me tremendously in processing this as well as what to do with moving forward (look it up on spotify, it brought me so much comfort). However, I am allowing myself the space and understanding that if I do not see the improvement, I have the means to leave completely.
I guess my reason for this post is because it can be very easy to get caught up in the "once a cheater, always a cheater" mindset. I'm not saying it doesn't exist; there are absolutely serial cheaters with no moral compass and try to put the blame on their partners. I've been on the receiving end of that absolutely heinous thinking. It's important to acknowledge the intricate nature of relationships, life, navigating mistakes, but also not to give up parts of yourself in the process. Not everything is worth working through, but also do not feel guilty for wanting to work on things. If it's worth it to you, it's okay. However, do not compromise your worth and what you deserve through it.
Be kind to yourself. Know your worth. Put yourself first. If you want to work on things, if it makes sense for you and your partner to do so, there's no shame in that.
However, don't be a fool twice. Give yourself the space and ability to leave if you need to. Do not let the pretty painted picture in your head be the only reason for staying. And just know that you did not deserve this; it is all about how broken, messed up, and irrational your partner's thinking was during that time. And if it's still shit, kick 'em to the curb.
Thank you all for reading. If you are in a similar situation, just know you're not alone, and a fellow redditor is navigating this very difficult situation alongside you. 💛

2024.05.16 19:16 Thepowersss How will SC1Zerg deal with SC2Zerg Banelings? Theorycrafting?

First off, StarCraft: Evolution Complete is an amazing mod and I’m loving that there’s so much love in both the SC1 and SC2 communities for it! I just finished watching the AfreecaTV vod of the SC1vsSC2 AGSL Supermatch and I can’t remember the last time I’ve been so happy to watch StarCraft!!
Of course, everyone knows there are a lot of imbalances in this current beta version of the mod, and most everyone can agree that none are more lopsided than Z1 vs Z2. What can Z1 even do against Z2 banelings and survive through the early game? In the show match, the Z1 player only made 2 sunks, which showed they can one shot banelings, but they can each get taken down by 4 banelings. Is then the best plan for the Z1 player to just wall the natural with buildings, with sunks behind them? Hydras would be too slow to come out, let alone lurkers, which could just get biled by ravagers. I can’t imagine any way for Z1 to get any advantage over Z2 Zerg.
What are your guys’ thoughts on this? I’d love to see if there’s any way that Z1 vs Z2 can be more balanced and have more variety in gameplay.
(Also dumb question can SC1 queens infest SC2 command centers?? XD)

2024.05.16 19:15 imagreenhippy "Mastering out" of my PhD program. after talking to my advisor, I fear I'm making a horrible mistake?

Hi gradschool friends. I am in a PhD program - physics, condensed matter (1st year going into 2nd) that I feel extremely fortunate to be in. My advisor is a great guy. Our lab environment is improving. It's in a city that my partner and I love... And I received the NSF fellowship. However, much of the time I've been here, I've felt completely disengaged, ostracized, and like whatever sparkle I've had has just been beaten down. I think that is because, while I love the broader topic of my field, the nitty gritty hard core research and this type of environment isn't for me. I also know I don't want to continue with a post-doc.
I miss talking to people and natural light and I feel so lonely beating my head against the wall for hours in the dark optics lab, laboriously reading papers that I couldn't care less about, or attending way too long seminars that make absolutely no sense and I couldn't imagine ever caring about or finding interesting. It sounds harsh, but it's true, my subfield is so boring to me now! I am also tired of barely scraping by, living paycheck to paycheck. My partner and I have been under immense financial strain... And I really don't care about the prestige of being a phd, it's not something I need.
For these reasons (and more) I had decided that I want to master out.
I fear after talking to my advisor, that I won't find a satisfying job without a PhD. He even offered a path through the PhD program where I could focus on instrumentation instead of materials. Tempting! But it is still hard to imagine 4 more years instead of just 1 more year of this path. I'm already slightly older than my peers and feel great urgency to start making more money. I would love to work at a tech company, I would love to do optical engineering or lasers at an exciting start-up. He made these things sound quite impossible without a Phd. And I do feel like I've learned almost nothing of practical use, like I joke with my friends, us physicists are just shittier engineers. Do you think this is true in the workforce? If so is there any advice or places to look? I'm not even sure of what technical skills I should try to be developing to give myself the best shot possible
Is my advisor right?? Do you know anyone in stem to have an exciting, high paying career with just a masters??

2024.05.16 19:13 JasonBetter10 5 Important Skills Kids Learn at Summer Camp (& Summer kids!)

5 Important Skills Kids Learn at Summer Camp (& Summer kids!)
https://preview.redd.it/66mh0u5xkt0d1.jpg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c3611fbe2be657d3cfe809df912f11c48f03077b
Here are just a few of the many skills that kids learn at Summer kids. We believe all of these are important to their success both now and later in life!

Teamwork & Cooperation

There’s not a lot of solitude at camp. Campers are together the whole day. But that’s a good thing!
Activities are more fun when they are accomplished together. This might be something as simple as coming together as a team for a game. Capture the Flag only works if a team operates cooperatively—one person can’t win the whole game alone. Or it might be helping another camper with a craft who is struggling to figure out how to start the lanyard or make the friendship bracelet stitch.

Decision-Making

Choice is baked into the DNA of our camp operation, and campers must learn to make decisions in order to navigate through the day. This means choosing what activities to do and what campers to meet, among other things.
We find that campers make decisions using all kinds of rationale: they might choose to do “bows and arrows” (aka archery) because they’ve loved a certain character who is a skilled archer. They might choose to do a certain activity because their favorite Counselor is leading it. Or they might choose to try something they’ve never done before, just because their friends are trying it.
All of those are valid, and valuable, reasons to make decisions. But from each of these, they will learn.
If a camper is having problems making a decision, our staff will help with that. They might narrow the choices, or throw out suggestions—thus making it easier and simpler for a camper to make that first decision themselves. And they will continue to help that camper. The next time that camper has to make a choice, the process will be easier. By the third or fourth time, it will be second nature.

Courage

A new environment is the best possible place that a child can learn what they are capable of doing and becoming! We realize that it’s never easy to try something new. But stepping out of their comfort zone, and trying new things, is important to a helping a child grow. Summer kids encourages campers to try new things and rewards them for that effort.

Resilience

I wish I could say that every moment at camp will be perfect, that no camper will have a challenge or thing to overcome. But that could happen. What’s more important is how we as a camp community help a child overcome that moment if it does happen.
We believe in giving campers the tools they need to overcome any issue. That might mean patiently talking them through how to do the next step of a craft, one that felt overwhelming but really just needed a bit more instruction. It could be venturing out on the 4 Period Hike, and pushing past being tired to reach the waterfall at the end of the trail. Or a Counselor who helps a camper who has scraped her knee get up, put a band-aid on it and return to the game. All of these are examples of resilience that are learned in the camp environment.

Self-Determination

In many ways, growing from a child to an adult is all about learning to chart your own course. And that’s one thing that Summer kids thrives on! Because they are picking their own activities—not being assigned to them based on gender, age or some other demographic—campers get to learn about themselves, about what interests them, what they are good at and what makes them happy. And as they move around our campsite (under Counselor supervision), they are learning how to navigate this place, this environment, in a way that will have a lasting impact on their own independence and maturation.
Do all of these things sound like what you want your camper’s summer to be all about? If so, press play on summer and sign up for one session or more!

2024.05.16 19:08 bullhead242 How would you price this edit/ video?

Hi Everyone! Looking for a sanity check on a project regarding pricing.
I was just working as a freelance shoote editor for a few years, and transitioned into a different full-time job with the intent of working on projects on the side. A friend who is relatively successful in the realm of corporate recruiting has a side business where she teaches job seekers how to find work (she gets like $800 to rewrite resumes JFC) and speaks publicly here and there. In trying to generate more passive income, she wants to create an online course and has hired some writers to work with her on the scripts. She's asked me for a quote to handle the shoot/ editing and told me her budget is about $8k.
The whole thing is projected about 90 minutes in length. Since the project will be mostly narrated video/ slides, she will only appear on camera for about 15-20% of that 90 minutes. if it's 12-18 minutes of finished footage, that sounds like a single day with just me (maybe an assistant?) two cameras, three lights, and an audio kit. Seems relatively straightforward to me.
The edit is the tricky part. Sounds like I'll have about a month to complete a 90-minute project. In a vacuum, that sounds *insane* but the nature of narrated clips of someone on a computer *might* mean the creator is picking the best take, and that removes a lot of work. I might be, at the end of the day, doing some finishing work, and cutting 15-minutes of talking head footage, which sounds pretty easy since it's already scripted.
The course is broken into four modules that are 20-25 minutes in length. I'm thinking it makes sense to treat it like it's 4 edits that are 20 minutes long, and saying it's $1k for each. Does that make sense?
Thanks!

2024.05.16 19:01 Excellent_Rich4930 My wife and I have been married for 9 years and have been together for 13 years, she has recently re-connected with her first BF from high school and I can't stop letting it bother me.

Just a little backstory, this EX was her first everything but he was also supremely emotionally abusive. He would spread rumors about her, and essentially ruined her social life in high school. They only spent 8-10 months together total before he turned on her. It has always been a source of trauma for her.
Recently, he came messaging her on FB. He kept trying to apologize and kept messaging her every few months. Finally she answered back and they started talking. I told her I supported facing him to get any closure and help heal any wounds she's carrying. I never once had an issue with her talking to this Ex or any Ex. I've never been the jealous type, I trust her completely even though I don't trust this dude for one second with his strange intentions of reaching out to her 20 years later.
Anyway, fast forward 2 weeks, I notice her texting non-stop for hours one evening. I knew immediately is wasn't just a friend, I knew it was him. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to be "that guy". But my stomach was in a knot seeing her so engaged with her Ex.
A few days later she said she wanted to let me know that they spoke on the phone and are now texting, and that he's really changed. That she unpacked this all with her therapist and they both think it would be good to forgive and move on and have this connection. They are now meeting for dinner and a movie to meet in person for the first time in 20+ years to unpack everything. She subtlety mentioned he warned him she doesn't look the same as she did in high school, and that he re-assured her she will always be beautiful and that of all the people he dated she treated him the best. I asked if that was her goal, to get this male attention from someone else from her past. And she admitted that it felt good to hear it from someone else besides me. All things I understand. I totally do. Being together with the same person for that long I'm sure brings on its monotony. But I've always strived to make her feel wanted, desired, appreciated, loved, cared for. And now I question what I'm not providing her.
I asked her if I was lacking anything that she is seeking in someone else, and she said no that we are fine and that this is something different. And to her credit she has not acted different with me at all, we are still close, there's no awkwardness or distance other than me getting stress cramps and trying to hide how all this affects me. At the end of the day it still feels like it's an "emotional affair". But I'm scared of even bringing that up because I don't want to come across as some immature "jealous" husband. He is now on her FB, "hearting/loving" every post of hers, yes even the ones with me in them. She then asked me why I was checking who likes her posts. I told her I didnt, that when I go to like a post of hers I just see right there he's already there with a "heart" on it.
I know it sounds childlike and immature, and I've seen similar posts here with this same situation. But the fact that my wife is enjoying the attention but assures me that she has zero feelings for him and that they just talk about movies and music still doesn't make me feel any better. I can't sleep most nights now, this knot in my stomach won't go away. Last night I smoked 4 joints and downed 2 glasses of scotch to try and knock myself out but it was like my body was immune to the effects, I spent the whole night wondering why she's doing this even though she's explained it from her POV several times now. I trust her 100%, but my the stress and anxiety just won't go away and now I need to hide it because I fear of making her think I'm some controlling person that wants to dictate who she can or cannot speak to. I don't want that, that's not who I am. I honestly told her I'd be fine if this was some random guy friend, or even a stranger from Reddit or something. But the fact that this guy not only has been with her, but also treated her poorly, just makes it all weird to me.
I don't know what I can possibly do without making her resent me. I don't want a world where she cuts off this guy fully and then resents me for making her feel like she needs to do that. But from the very beginning this whole thing was supposed to be about getting closure, and the surprise of it turning into texting and now meeting up took me by surprise. She's been very open about it, she isn't hiding anything. But part of me feels like he's making moves on her, hitting on her, or just being flirty with her. I haven't seen any of the texts, and I would never look unless my wife willingly showed me (I havent asked to see them because I really do trust her, I dont want to go down that road).
Anyway, it's been throwing me for a loop, and I miss being able to sleep without a painful knot in my chest and stomach. As someone who's been passed over many times before meeting my wife, those experiences naturally pop up in my head. But I know she'd never do anything since this dude is a mess. He may have a GF but he's unemployed, went to jail and has a criminal record, and never got an education. I just don't know what to make of this, is this an emotional affair? Am I being a weak selfish person wanting this dude to just go back to living in the shadows? I just feel all out of sorts over it and don't know how I can even approach this without being the bad guy.

2024.05.16 18:58 Orfan_Crippl3r The Officially Unofficial Definitive Super Special Awesome Just Roll With It Fan-Made Guide/Watch/Listen Order!

I started listening/watching to Just Roll With It in June of 2023, and began to work my way through every video, one-shot, and campaign available publicly or via patreon. As of May, the day The Suckening concluded in fact, I have finished every episode that has been released and is available to find (including the Fated and Convergence). I’m now a die-hard fan, naturally, and therefore made my own definitive guide of what to listen to, and in what order. I was originally going to write up a review of each series/one-shot as well, but nobody wants to hear my random opinions (some of which are contrarian to popular fan views). So I’ll spare you that (you're welcome).
I’ve made a couple of versions: one that I consider the optical viewing/listening order for people new to JRWI (starts with one-shot proposals, enters into Riptide, ends with Fated/Convergence), and one that is chronological (for those re-listening and wish to go in order from The Fated through The Suckening).
Although these guides are for myself, I am sharing them because when I started JRWI last summer, it was pretty overwhelming to figure out where to start, what to watch, and in what order. The one-shots and what-ifs in particular threw me off, and I didn't know when I should mix them in. Coincidentally I'm doing my first Persona 5 playthrough, and that too is best experienced with a guide (ACE walkthrough all the way, baybeee).
I’m providing a PDF version and the Excel/sheet version. The PDF version is for people who want to grab it and run with it. The excel version is for people that wish to alter the list for their own tastes, whether that’s changing the order, making the tables look prettier, or doing anything else your heart (daddy) desires. Just make your own copy and do as you please!
For fun there’s also a factoid section that just gives you fun facts about how long each series is, how long they ran, how many episodes they have, etc. Pointless info, but fun to know. I might also add a JRWI Just Rolled With It section to that section so that there’s a definitive record of who had intro’d the most, who knows!
There is also a google form included as well. This is to be used to submit any errors found so that the sheet can be corrected if something was missed. So if you are looking at the info and find that something is incorrect (such as a wrong date or episode length), please take a quick minute to fill out the form so that the sheet can be updated.
Anyway, that’s all! Thanks for letting me share, I hope some people find this useful.

2024.05.16 18:53 hydra1280 If I was MC series: RWBY breaking free from the rules as a transmigration story unless you want me to be 4 people

Seen: Season 9
Stepping back, I go all the way to the magical age, I wait for things to happen and allow the gods to destroy the world but instead I let myself be known to them, giving my greetings and sucking ass to the destruction god. The difference between the original is that I stick around for the aftermath after getting myself some elixir of eternity, talking and getting along with Salem until and making her think I am a manifestation of the mind and make sure she doesn't go inside the pool of destruction, but ultimately leaving her alone at the last legs of the journey so she can fall in later without my positive influence.
When Ozpin is reincarnated, I once again wait for him to begin moving and meet Salem, I then allow them to fight and return for my misdirection technique where I trick Salem, giving Ozpin enough leverage to get the girls out. I then lay the guilt on, HARD, about how she killed her own daughters and how she could have died millenniums ago if not for her pride and ego, being 1000x worse than her father. In the event this mental manipulation solves the problem and she admits her mistakes then yippee, but, otherwise, I continue with my plans by hiding the children and allowing them to find relationships while I continue researching the grimm. I take them to the lower islands on the map, clear out the grimm and use my own which I would either have tamed or learned how to herd and fake extreme grimm density. Slowly I build my population and selectively breed the people to be taller, stronger and not alter Ozpin's reincarnation cycle by using my own stock. When we start reaching modern stuff, I kill Cinder before she has the chance to take half of Summer's powers and allow Pyrrha to possess the half-dead corpse. I would have also come out at some point, possibly with my men, to continue the heavily guarded city beyond the mountains, using it as an emotional sponge to massively decrease the grimm population. Meanwhile, over the years and well after exploration had finished, the other islands in the south near Vacuo would have been cleared out and populated. Using these islands, a lot of resources would have been sent to Menagerie so their paradise/asylum/home was more than a tropical tourist spot with terrorists. Similar events would be done around the world like expanding Atlas with a city on its Eastern side that exploited the same deep dust veins.
Come the attack at Beacon, well that is simply an event that shouldn't be stopped, instead, the forces were to be relocated elsewhere and when everyone left with plot significance the soldiers could come in and clear out the rest. The story would continue until the ladies got to Atlas, at which point the plan to leave the planet would be progressed while I take the knowledge wish granter, killing Salem's agents and allowing Atlas to safely leave orbit while the spacial bridge was opened for the people under Atlas. Finally, entering the 9th season, I jump down and eat the time fruit, giving Jaune a wink as I surpass him and vanish to the beginning. Watching the gods grow up, I capture their destroyer and teach them responsibility before beating the shit out of them, knowing that their journey of discovery will force them to repeat their mistakes. With what needed to be accomplished done, I take the leaf and get behind Jaune once more so I can go exploring, collecting and learning. Once I have seen all I possibly can, I end up back at the tree using the leaves and go to the present, saving the cat and the demon for my trump card, modifying the lamp to hold them and give the cat the answers it wanted while making the demon more humane and able to change his size. I then once again leave team RWBY and friends with the cat and demon by my side with a bunch of leaves and a seed.
Now back and ahead of the story, I reconnect with my people, happily hearing how things have gone as directed and that Atlas has positioned itself above Vacuo, sending down massive amounts of resources upon request and establishing an inter-planetary defence network that utilises mechs, asteroids, lasers and drop pods. The best part is that after getting the help of the Tree, the final part of my plan has been completed where I reveal myself, showing off my army of faunus, silver-eyed, semblance-using, magic users. The best part is that the Tree wasn't just used for a time skip and secretly helped complete my final form.
Like Salem, her immortality allowed her to be drenched in grimm energy which would have eroded anything else, giving her control and partial traits, as well as a liking for destruction. But the truth of the grimm component is that it is like Venom from Marvel and has the opportunity to harmonise cells as free parts that work with even greater determination and vigour. Mixing it with a body is hazardous and wouldn't have the intended effect and using an immortal simply creates a balance because there is no means of contention. But since I spent the time gaining pawns and researching dust, I would have finally been able to conduct a hybrid formula of dust and grimm that could be injected into exceptionally strong individuals or immortals with a proper synchronisation rate. As for the cat, it offered the potential to enhance things even further by using its supernatural and reality-defying powers to simulate a consciousness for the grimm-dust cells that merged with my immortal ones, allowing the new mind to be absorbed and enhance my abilities over my own body. As for the demon and leaves, they have a different purpose, one that others thought wasn't needed when Salem arrived after a while with her flying gorilla and dragon fleet with a bit of native desert-type grim and migrating herds. When they came, using the satellite array and infinite powers of creation to create defences only made up in a child's imagination, also using Penny and her ice abilities to clear out and flatten desert mounds. Speaking of Penny, her soul project was mass-produced using those of a good nature, meanwhile, Penny became like the director or big sister to all the other androids with their cybernetic superpowers. Something that would be a massive help against Salem's latest onslaught of epic and never-ending hellfire and rattlesnakes. Eventually, Salem would be beaten and cornered where she would be sealed and imprisoned thanks to the combined efforts of everyone, making an overwhelming last-stand victory. But Salem's wishes wouldn't go unfulfilled and she would get to see part of what she wished for desperately, seeing the gods descend upon the world where they would be met with me. If you were properly reading by now, you would know I gave these gods PTSD once I showed my maddened face and gave them a roast about their failings as gods and abandonment of their creations before talking about the philosophies and sophistry for why humanity should live by mentioning everything, from our flaws to our cute quirks to our outstanding commitments. The gods would be made to seriously consider as they were buttered up by their shrines being decorated and freshly offered offerings. Finally, though, what would be the final straw is the tea which would have the leaves pushed into their mouths, bringing them back to the Tree for sorting, alls all that ends well

2024.05.16 18:51 kowell2 A legacy of human frienship

I'm posting some old stories that I wrote maybe 6 or 7 years ago before I knew HFY existed so you may have read them before on WP or some other sub but they are mine. Also, obligatory "english is not my first language"
Calvin sat in silence, his gaze focused on the green dot flashing slowly on his console. The Council had kept their word. His comm interface had connected to a temporary relay satellite near Saturn. A special request that was granted to lift Earth's isolation sentence for a brief moment to relay a final message to the cosmos. Everything was ready, the message prerecorded the day before and final adjustements to the gift had been made a few weeks ago. Calvin pondered everything that had happened, every events leading to this moment, to humanity's last chance to stand on the centerstage.
It didn't start this way. When humanity first made contact with an extraterrestrial race, we were welcomed with opened arms. Our very first message was "we come in a spirit of friendship" Humanity's quick evolution and technological progress had already caught the attention of the Galactic System Alliance. Some of its members were concerned over the general violent tendencies demonstrated throughout human history but true to its benevolent mission, the Alliance had given humanity the benefit of the doubt. We were allowed outposts, territories, trading routes and even the newly created 328th seat on the Galactic Council of Representatives. Humanity was given a real fair chance to shine. And boy did we waste it.
The Galactic Alliance was over 5 million years old, some of its members could be traced back all the way to the founding days of the Alliance. It had brought about a previously unheard of, almost uninterrupted era of peace throughout the galaxy. Its rulings were generally both fair and just. A beacon of hope and justice into the dark cosmos. Humanity gave it its first civil war, less than 50 years after joining. 5 million years of peace, ripped apart in the space of a moment.
Humanity started off well enough. Outposts and trading were profitable and while human vessels were not as technologically advanced as other races, our ability to anticipate enemy movements and quickly adapt to volatile situations made us a prime candidate for galactic peacekeeping missions. Humans rapidly made a name for themselves as a deterrent to pirates and smugglers. The Galactic Council did not hesitate to authorize human settlements in sectors prone to hostile actions, knowing that humanity's presence would pacify a sector quickly. Humanity's image rose to a more favorable one and initial concerns and hesitations towards us slowly crumbled away. Unfortunately with the rise of humanity's standing, came a rise of its hubris. After all, humans will always remain humans; fickle, volatile, greedy.
Humanity became more and more demanding in its dealings with the Alliance. We constantly wanted more, became arrogant, took what we felt we deserved. The Council turned a blind eye when humanity moved in on turbulent territories and claim them for itself but before long, we had our eyes set on more prominent systems. With every outburst and hostile action, we only isolated ourselves further. Humanity's positive image quickly turned negative, and when backed into a corner, humanity turned vengeful. We convinced ourselves we were the victims and that in the end, it was us or them. Some members of the Alliance came to view our side of things, others were forced into servitude. A simple spark was all it took for a full fledge civil war to break out.
Within the span of only 3 years, the Alliance was on fire, divided, broken. Humanity's unmatched potential for warfare made it a formidable enemy but in the end our arrogance got the better of us and we lost. The consequences for our actions were harsh but justified. Given humanity's irrecoverable nature, we had been sentenced to erasing. All humans would be relocated to Earth, sterilized and left to die alone, the Sol system kept under a permanent military blockade. All mentions of humanity were to be removed from Galactic history and we would be forgotten, erased from existence. It was the second time only, in the entire Alliance's history that this punishment was handed out.
As a final gesture of good will, the Council had authorized a final message from humanity's last living representative to the members of the Alliance, to be distributed, but then erased. Looking up from his console, Calvin toggled the small switch that would send out the transmission to the satellite's internal memory, then end his life. He permitted himself a final smile, the Council would be seriously pissed... at first.
In the dark emptiness of space, the small satellite's memory indicator turned red, signaling reception of a message but unfortunately it was too far away to witness the small light flash from the thermo nuclear explosion that officially ended humanity's presence in the galaxy.
Captain Xandar was pacing back and forth across the small bridge of his scout vessel. While he was honored to be part of an official Council mission, he couldn't help but feel that he was potentially being sacrificed as cannon fodder. The Council may have granted the human's wish of a last message but it still feared a trap. Human's deceptive and violent nature would leave a dark shadow on the galaxy, slow to vanish. Humanity's first word to the Alliance, "Friend" had become a synonym of "deceit, treachery and naivety". The 20 large warships hiding just outside the limit of the Sol system did nothing to calm Xandar's nerves. While they were there to offer protection in case of a human trap, should things go south they would probably not hesitate to destroy Xandar's vessel if needed.
Captain, we are in range of the relay satellite. Systems confirm there is indeed a message on the internal memory. Initial scans show the data file is rather large but still looks clean.
Xandar sighed, the poor human schmuck probably went on a long tirade against the Alliance. A fitting end for such a violent race.
Very well lieutenant, download and scan the message. If everything looks good we'll transmit it to the Council and they can decide if it's worth sharing to the rest of the Alliance or not.
As soon as the young lieutenant opened the message file, all lights on the bridge went out, the quiet hum of the engines vanished and artificial gravity disengaged. Xandar was doing his best to maintain his composure while slowly drifting 2 feet in the air but as suddenly as it had vanished, artificial gravity came back and the emergency lighting activated, bathing the bridge in a reddish hue. On the main screen was a sole human, weak and frail in appearance.
Apologies to the commander of the Alliance vessel, I assure you that I meant no disrespect and no harm to your vessel and your crew. As authorized by the Galactic Council of Representatives, I hereby bring you a final farewell from humanity, as well as a final gift to remember us by.
Xandar was panicking, all restraint and stoic facade usually associated with his rank had vanished from his face, his eyes were white with fear.
Shit! The damn human played us like fool! Lieutenant, I want an immediate status report on the ship's systems. First officer, contact the fleet, there is no telling what we just exposed ourselves to.
Comms are down sir, unable to raise the fleet. We have limited access to the main computer and all blast doors have been sealed shut throughout the ship. She’s dead in the waters Sir.
Damn it! I want every exabyte of that datafile analyzed for any trace of a virus or even biological agents. We should have known better than to trust the humans to honor their word.
Xandar looked back to the monitor, the human had remained silent, probably anticipating the commotion that his message would cause. Xandar waited for the recording to resume.
Now, I assume the initial moment of shock is behind us so let’s continue. As I said, I bring you a final gift from humanity to all races and citizens of the Alliance. Fear not, though this final deception on our part may appear as vengeful, I assure you it is not the case. I knew the Council would never allow for this message to be shared throughout the Alliance, let alone our gift so I had to take some creative measures. Your analysis team is probably telling you about now that the 2 data files enclosed with this message are organic and they are correct though fear not, it is not a biological agent or a viral threat. Both files contain the DNA blueprints of Dogs. While we initially had dozen of sub-species, the complexity of this entire action limited me to only upload one specific breed. More precisely I give you the Retriever Labrador. I have enclosed blueprints for a brown-coated male and a golden-coated female. Though they are called man's best friend, I assure you they are nothing like us, to the contrary they are loyal, playful and innocent. They represent everything humanity has failed to be. They are our gift to you in the hope that you will one day forgive us for everything we have done. May they be a protector when evil threatens you. May they be love when hate isolates you. May they be a beacon of hope when darkness surrounds you. Treat them well. We did not deserve them, but hopefully you will prove yourself worthy of them.
The ship's systems came back online the very moment the recording ended. Lights rekindled across the bridge and the engines sprung back to life, filling the vessel with their low humming. Xandar looked over to the bridge crew, most of them still in shock and unsure of what exactly had happened. It was the young comms lieutenant that broke the silence first.
Sir, all systems are back online. Comms are back up and the fleet is hailing us, they want to know what the hell is going on. They are asking if we have been compromised.
Tell the fleet to remain on stand-by, we will need to assess the situation. First officer, give me a full systems check.
Sir, I'm detecting a massive power fluctuation from levels 3 through 7. Powers appears to have been rerouted to the auxiliary deck.
Tell engineering to stabilize the power levels and seal off the auxiliary deck
Controls are unresponsive Sir, power is being channeled to the backup biological replicators
What? Kill all power to the auxiliary deck, NOW!
We can't, the auxiliary deck is hooked up directly within the main generator and has its own dedicated safety bypass. It's meant to work even in the events of a catastrophic engine failure to insure the survival of the crew.
Shit! The human didn't do this by accident. He purposely automated his virus through the backup replicators knowing full well we wouldn't be able to turn them off. First officer, I need you to vent the atmosphere from the auxiliary deck's replicator room.
Controls are unresponsive Sir
Then blow the damn room out to space, do whatever is needed to stop this!
There is nothing we can do sir, we're completely locked out of the auxiliary deck. Security teams are waiting outside the replicator room but the system won't allow me to open the door.
Xandar was unsure how to proceed at this point. They had been compromised but calling in the fleet would mean immediate destruction. He pondered for a while but then made the decision to contact the fleet regardless of the consequences. He had a duty to insure the safety of the Alliance. He turned to the young lieutenant and gave the order to raise the fleet. His gaze was however quickly met with the panicked expression of the young comm's lieutenant.
Sir! The recording! It's transmitting itself to the fleet via our open commlink!
WHAT?
The fleet is no longer responding. I think... I think they're going through what we went through when we first opened the recording.
Xandar was in shock. The realisation of what was about to happen was slowly setting in.
If you're right son, that means the recording will activate their organic replicators as well and then transmit itself to the rest of the Alliance fleet. We've doomed the Alliance.
Sir! Replicators report completion of their programmed tasks.
Auxiliary deck controls are back online! Scanners indicate 2 life forms. Replicator room doors just opened on their own!
Xandar turned slowly towards his first officer.
Sir, there is a final message on the replicator console's screen.
---Protocol Goodboy1 successful
---Protocol Goodgirl2 successful
---May they show you the true meaning of the word "Friendship"
Bonus
It only seemed fitting that humanity's last action would be to blow trough bureaucratic redtapes and regulations to impose dogs on the galaxy (with the best of intentions of course). Calvin did promise no harm would come the vessel and its crew and that's been true... for the most part. There is definitly no physical harm and while psychological and/or traumatic consequences are a possibility (albeith a rather small one), you know... dogs will take care of that. It all works out in the end.
Well, except for the poor Glaxien crew members who turns out are deadly allergic to dog hair, and the Phlosaks whose skin reacts to dog urine as if it was acid (poor bastard got peed on his face when he lifted a puppy), and the Klaangorians who's very fragile and very vital lower mandible looked like the ideal chew toy for one young puppy. A very uselessly exposed lower mandible if you ask me. Not to mention the many planetary ecosystems that will be seriously messed up by the introduction of a new uncontrolled species.
In fact some would argue that those pesky government regulations were there for a reason, that with time, the Alliance could and would have experimented with the DNA blueprint in a controlled environment and then, given positive results, would have moved on to a gradual and supervised introduction of dogs in the galaxy.
But you know, that's just not the human way to do things. Better to rip the bandage in one go and hope for the best. Surely the Alliance can't fault humanity for what Calvin did, it was for the best, THEIR best and while in retrospect we are kinda sorry about the whole "accidental death by dogs" thing and ruined ecosystems, these are freak occurences, trivial, statistically benign. Like the great Cave Johnson once said, if I put these numbers into my calculator it makes a happy face.
You're welcome universe, we accept your most sincere gratitude and your apologies are much appreciated. You don't have to feel the need to mention it, we're totaly fine. In fact, please stop yelling at us.

2024.05.16 18:49 teabagandwarmwater Why is Allaah not answering my duaa?

by Asma bint Shameem
You’ve been making Duaa to Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala for a long time. You’re begging. You’re crying. You’re asking Him. But there is no response.
And you wonder “why”?
Why is it that your Duaa is not answered? Is Allaah not listening to you?
Well, sometimes it may SEEM like Allaah didn’t accept our duaa although in reality He DID.
Thats because the RESPONSE to the duaa may take different forms:
  1. Allaah will respond and give you exactly what you made the duaa for
  2. He will turn away some evil or harm from you because of the duaa, or
  3. He will save it for you for the Day of Resurrection when you will need it the most.
🍃 The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“There is no Muslim who calls upon Allaah with words in which there is no sin or severing of family ties but Allaah will give him one of three things: either He will answer his prayer soon, or He will store it up for him in the Hereafter, or He will remove something bad from him that is equivalent to what he is asking for.”
They said, “Then we should make a great amount of du’aa’.”
He said, “Allaah is greater.” (at-Tirmidhi -saheeh by al-Albaani)
Our Deen encourages us to make a LOT of duaa, and we shouldn’t be hasty in seeking a response.
That’s because duaa is a most beautiful act of Ibaadah and is so beloved to Allaah Subhaan Allaah.
So we MUST ALWAYS make duaa and NEVER give up.
But the Shaytaan does not want us to make duaa and have it accepted. So he whispers in our head and puts doubts in our minds about Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala and makes us lose hope.
However, we can NEVER lose hope or despair.
Remember, NO ONE despairs of Allaah except those that are astray.
🍃 Allaah says:
[Ibraheem] said: "And who despairs of the Mercy of his Lord except those who are astray?" (Surah al-Hijr:56)
So have GOOD HOPES with Allaah and know that Allaah WILL respond to our duaas sooner or later.
If He’s not responding ’now’, He will respond ‘later’.
🍃 The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“The duaa of any one of you will be answered so long as he is not impatient and says, I made duaa but it was not answered.” (al-Bukhaari and Muslim)
🍃 Ibn al-Jawzi said about duaa not being answered right away:
“I think part of the test is when a believer supplicates and receives no response, and he repeats the du’aa’ for a long time and sees no sign of a response. He should realize that this is a TEST and needs PATIENCE.
1️⃣What a person experiences of waswaas when the response is delayed is a sickness which needs medicine, I have experienced this myself.
A calamity befell me and I supplicated and did not see any response, and Iblees started to lay his traps.
Sometimes he said : The generosity (of Allaah) is abundant and He is not miserly, so why is there a delay?
I said to him: Be gone, O cursed one, for I have no need of anyone to argue my case and I do not want you as a supporter!
Then I told myself: Beware of going along with his whispers, for if there was no other reason for the delay except that Allaah is testing you to see whether you will fight the enemy, that is sufficient wisdom.
My soul (nafs) said: How could you explain the delay in the response of Allaah to your prayers for relief from this calamity?
I said: It is proven with evidence that Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, is the Sovereign, and the Sovereign may withhold or give, so there is no point in objecting to Him.
2️⃣The wisdom behind that is proven in definitive evidence. I may think that something is good, but wisdom does not dictate it, but the reason for that may be hidden, just as a doctor may do things that appear outwardly to be harmful, intending some good purpose thereby. Perhaps this is something of that nature.
3️⃣There may be an interest to be served by delay, and haste may be harmful.
The Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said:
“A person will be fine so long as he does not become impatient and says, ‘I prayed but I did not receive any answer.’”
4️⃣The response may be withheld because of some FAULT in you.
Perhaps there was something dubious in what you ate or your heart was heedless at the time when you said the du’aa’, or your punishment is being increased by means of your need being withheld, because of some sin from which you have not repented sincerely.
So look for some of these reasons, so that you might achieve your aim.”
Subhaan Allaah what a beautiful explanation of why duaa may not be answered right away.
So as Ibn Jawzi said, sometimes there may be reasons why Duaa may not be accepted.
For example;
And Allaah knows best.

While a humble person, Roth has no illusions of his strengths and how powerful he can be when in battle.
Roth values loyalty and honesty, things he has shown to his team by having no secrets from them and has encouraged his team to do the same with great effect. Because of his values in honesty, Rogert does not forgive attempts to lie to him and tries to limit his words to be as truthful as possible.
Roth has a ruthless attitude when it comes to leadership and dealing with enemies. As a leader, Roth expects nothing but competence and giving 100% in combination with a firm chain of command and on-the-spot obedience.
Roth is a strong believer in learning and improving skills. Because of this, Roth has learned from his teammates the skills he lacked before meeting them and has instructed them to do the same.
Desiring always to have the upper hand, he learned to keep his emotions in check at all times and focused on his studies in his free time and school time. Other people often consider him emotionless, yet no one is willing to say it in his earshot, and he doesn´t mind this thought about him.
Rogert has mastered his emotions, and he can make decisions that would make other people disgusted with themselves be it torture or cruel punishments without flinching as he got older. While his team reminds him about his better nature and while his actions have never been directed against an innocent, Rogert believes he can´t afford to hesitate to act when many lives are at stake.
His team, REPR, has helped him loosen up, and he discovered his liking for playing the saxophone and driving. His team has helped him to become a better man than he thinks he needs to be as the years went by.
