2024.03.25 06:55 Zenairo Dragons Plague then Eternal Wakestone

In my game Dragons Plague wiped out Bakbattahl after I slept at Pilgrims' Inn. Every NPC from the palace to the gate was dead. I slept in the bed at the house I bought in the residential ward until morning, several NPC's including vendors came back, but not all. The remaining 91 relocated to the morgue. I already had the Eternal Wakestone and used it in front of the morgue (can't throw it inside, ceiling too low, it gives you a confirmation pop-up telling you how many will be revived), all NPC's revived and my morgue is now empty. This awarded the Reaper's Scorn achievement (miracle for several people all at once).
Incredible game design, really, everything from how far it reaches in town, the 'doomsday' warnings from pawns, the existence of the eternal wakestone, the morgue having just enough slabs for this scenario. I was shocked when it happened and very satisfied with the solution.
I was lucky to already have the eternal wakestone, about 40 hours in, this mechanic could definitely hurt some feelings though and send players on a difficult journey early into the game.
The cutscene that plays after you sleep shows which pawn was responsible, it was an outside pawn I had traveled with for roughly 20 days (I don't think I can check the exact number if they are removed by dying?). When I hired this pawn I got my first warning about Dragons Plague. Before it struck, I had killed the sick drake at Dragonsbreath Tower then did a quest that took probably 3-4 days at the end of which sleeping finally triggered the plague.
Other posts explain how to spot the plague and where to get the eternal wakestone so I've kept this post to just my experience.
Hope this info helps, and that this unique mechanic gets a little less hate.

------------------------------
♦ INFORMATION ♦ [1.A]
------------------------------
- Named "Town-On-Gorkhan"
- Located on the Steppe plains

- The town provides the entire Northeastern region with beef
- The beef industry in town is known as the "Bull Project" and controlled by the Olgimskys
- Townsfolk don't seem to hold the Steppe people in too high regard
- The war that took place in the country was a civil war, otherwise known as the February Revolt.

------------------------------
♦ CULTURE ♦ [1.B]
------------------------------
- The "Mistress" of every ruling house possess special abilities like clairvoyance.
• Townsfolk:
• Tragedicians: Thesians, actors, playwrights. Mimes of a sort.
• Gobo Taglur: A sort of epic, native to the town.
• Executors: ???. They wear strange bird costumes.
• The Train: Women of the kin bid it farewell with songs of sorrow upon each depature as some sort of tradition or ritual
• History: The history of the town started with the bull project. As the bull project became more successful and the rulers became more rich, the town sprung up around it.

------------------------------
♦ MYTHOLOGY ♦ [1.C]
------------------------------
• Uncategorized:
- Child's fable(?) about a translucent cat known as "the unseen cat".
- A Mara is some kind of creature who appears beautiful at first, but her face is made of twigs. They can "suck your life out", and is considered a maneater. Possibly similar to a Spriggan?
- Drinking Steppe water is believed to give the individual who drank it "bad fortune"

------------------------------

- In August and September, various herbs that grow around the town release noxious vapors.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
♠ STEPPE CULTURE ♠ [1.2]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

------------------------------
♦ CULTURE ♦ [1.F]
------------------------------
• The Kin: The Kin are Steppe people, the tribals of the Steppe. There are two types of "Kin", those being the ones who live in town and the ones who still live in the Steppe. The ones who live in town work in the abattoir, and live in the Termitary. They are a patriarchal society that still practice the old tradition of the Steppe people, with the factory workers being among them.
• Odongh: Means "he who holds Him by the horns." They are people of the Steppe who bring bulls into town. They are also known as "Worms".
• Haruspicy: The people of the Steppe are known to practice Haruspicy, a psuedo-mythological rite in which one can attain divination, that is - knowledge of the future, by investigating corpses, entrails, organs, or sometimes even just blood. At it's most simple version, it is a method of fortune telling.
• Menkhu: The special caste allowed to open a human body, rather for surgical needs or otherwise, according to the traditions of the Steppe. It is said to be both a honorable and despised position. This is because the Menkhu are not ordinary surgeons, but trained to make their cuts into and dissect the body in very particular ways in line with tradition and that will also "please the Earth". They are something akin to a surgeon/butcher and wise man in one.
• The Human Body: To the people of the Steppe, the human body represents the world. Only a very specific caste may open a human body. For an non-Menkhu to open a human body is a blasphemy of the worst kind, more repulsive than even incest.
------------------------------
♦ MYTHOLOGY ♦ [1.G]
------------------------------
• Udurgh: An udurgh is a really large living creature, an animal god made from soil. It produces sticky yellow tar instead of saliva, and it's with this tar that the sky is attached to the ground.
• Shabnak-Adyr: Known as the "Steppe Demon", and is considered a man eater made of clay and exhumed bone mattr. It is said to be "belched up from the Earth" to punish deliquency. It takes the form of a young, beautiful woman. When set to fire it is said to harden and break rather than burn. Bovine tails and milk-teeth are said to offer protection from her.
• Souls-In-A-Half: Children mention something known as "Souls-in-a-Half". Steppe culture regarding soul splitting with familiars, animal pets. You take care of the pet as it's young, then when it's grown it's the other way around and it takes care of you, and thus you two are bound.
• Baur Meges: A book of Steppe legends. Explains what a turnskin (like a werewolf) is.
• Mara: An evil spirit. Possibly similar to shabnak.
• Rites:
- Smearing ones doorstep with horse milk and putting bull bones in ones pillow can act as some sort of protection rite.
- The earth is believed to be the people's foremother. Some get buried deep in the ground, but not all. It is suggested they "make use of" the bodies that do not get buried.
------------------------------
♦ LANGUAGE ♦ [1.H]
------------------------------
The language of the Steppe people is a Turkic language that seems to be a mixture of various Turkic and Asiatic steppe languages. Though it does not have any one official name in it's own right, for academic purposes and as is my right as a scientist, academician, and bachelor coming across something heretofore either undocumented (in detail) or unnamed; I am here on out going to brand and name it "Khatan", a shortened form of the word "Khatanghe" which represents these particular people of the Steppe as a whole. Now that the object of our consideration has been given a name and thus the first barrier of the "unknown" has been broken, we can begin to study it in detail.
Khatan is a Turkic language that uses old-Turkic as it's base and building blocks. It is a unique language with minor to intermediate but varying amounts of influence from Tuvan and Mongolian, taking and using elements of both interchangably, though is unique in it's speech patterns enough to differentiate it from merely being a dialect of Tuvan or Mongolian. This would suggest that the language was born either out of a people who had regular contact with both ethnic groups or were a cultural offshoot from one of them that split away from it's parent culture/language at an uncertain point in history, likely having members of the other cultural group within it. Whichever theory may be correct, it would likely be accurate to posit that due to the sheer size and landmass of the great Steppe, which would undoubtedly result in prolonged periods of isolation from neighboring cultures, in it's isolation the language of the group would evolve to the point where it only contained remnants of the parent language(s) it was born of, becoming a language of it's own.
Etymology and the history of linguistics shows us that languages are not static but rather subject to constant evolution, with a large number of languages being born out of the evolution of another language and the influences the region and it's culture has upon it, not to mention the fact that words are "borrowed" from neighboring languages often. It is with this information that I base my theory on the etymology of Khatan off of.
~•~ Definitions ~•~
• Khatanghe: The Kin. Refers to the people of the Steppe as a whole.
• Odongh: Means "he who holds Him by the horns." Refers to the Worms.
• Taglur: A Circle / A Kin Circle A Group
• Menkhu: Those who set apart parts of the whole - loose translation
• Sugagh: Literally, "water crag". Though it is used often to denote one spring in particular between the Steppe and Rotten Field
------------------------------
♦ ALPHABET ♦ [1.I]
------------------------------
The Steppe language, Khatan, has it's own alphabet, though it is not as often employed as that of a language from a more modern or industrialized region. The Steppe alphabet can not be said to contain letters, but rather consists of markings that are somewhere between runes and hieroglyphs, though not quite either. It is for this reason that I am going to refer to them as "glyphs". Said glyphs usually have more complex designs, requiring more pen strokes, than your classic Steppe language alphabets, such as Old Uyghur, and this could be why written language is only used sparingly amongst the Khatanghe... possibly due to the difficulty of mastering such a writing system. In fact, it's depiction is less like Old Uyghur and more similar to the Sogdian alphabet.

♣ GEOGRAPHY ♣ [2.0]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
♣ THE DISTRICTS ♣ [2.1]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Districts is what the town proper is called. It is divided into three sectors, from west to east, which are Stone Yard, Knots, and Earth. These sectors are further divided into sub-sectors. The primary river is known as the Gorkhon, with two tributaries running through town, the Guzzle on the left and the Gullet on the right.
------------------------------
♦ STONE YARD ♦ [2.A]
------------------------------
- Two subsectors: Bridge Square and Atrium
- Contains Mistress's Tomb
------------------------------
♦ KNOTS ♦ [2.B]
------------------------------
- Seven subsectors: Spleen, Marrow, Chine, Backbone, Mouth, Flank, Gut
------------------------------
♦ EARTH ♦ [2.C]
------------------------------
- Four residential subsectors: Skinners, Tanners, Hindquarters, Crude Sprawl
- Rebuilt after a fire
- The Rotten Field is where they bury the bull's bones underground
♥ SKINNERS ♥
Northern area of the Earth district
• Bone Stake Lot - Used to be used for "barbaric practices". It contains a large upright boulder that has been there since the "beginning of time".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
♣ UNIQUE BUILDINGS ♣ [2.2]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
------------------------------
♦ ABATTOIR ♦ [2.D]
------------------------------
- Child states Abattoir is inhabited by god's "So old that even beasts believed in them before humans even existed". People say it's so big because it holds "the cavities of the unburied udurgh".
- Drunkard claims it has been in town "since nothing else was", that it is an operational "temple of death" where large amounts of bull's are slaughtered.
------------------------------
♦ TERMITARY ♦ [2.E]
------------------------------
- The Termitary is a huge bunkhouse where the Bull Project workers live
- The workers live there as a commune
- People there appear to be starving
- People living there are known as the "King"
- When an uprising happens they block off the termitary and wait for them to calm down
- Parents won't let children go near the Termitary. The people there aren't "bad" but can "cause a lot of harm", according to a child. They have strange beliefs, like a cultural acceptance of cannibalism and that being buried alive is a "gift" or "Great Honor". Generally, they can "do something abominable to you".
------------------------------
♦ POLYHEDRON ♦ [2.F]
------------------------------
- Adults see the "walls of the tower", which have some sort of strange writing on them as well as architectural designs, some of which look to be for the tower itself. Children however do not see the walls, they see a variety of different scenes, different worlds, different places of both the world and from myths of legend. Places such as the coast of the New Sea, Cleft Islands, et cetera.
- The average adult sees the walls as reflective mirrors, while Daniil seems to see them as paper with writing on them. The "design" was created so that each adult would only see infinite reflections of themselves, hence why the townsfolk call it the "Specular Tower".

♠ PLAGUE JOURNAL ♠ [3.0]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
♠ INFORMATION ♠ [3.1]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This section will detail what is known about the plague currently ailing Town-On-Gorkhon.
------------------------------
♦ ORIGIN ♦ [3.A]
------------------------------
The origins of the plague is unknown, though information gathered points to the Steppe and it is likely 'Patient Zero' originated from the Steppe, and brought it into town. It goes by many names however the most common is "Sand Plague". Five years prior to my arrival, the town suffered it's first and only known outbreak. The contagion however was quickly contained and curbed by Isidor Burakh, though it is not known what exact methods that he used, only that elements of quarantine were quickly employed. Other than this, nothing is known. It has not been officially 'discovered' by any known doctor, scholar, virologist, etc. nor has it been recorded, catalogued, or classified in any medical textbook. Disregarding Isidor, this would theoretically make me the first scholar to "discover" it. Plenty of other diseases are rife in, and stalk the Steppe, but it is readily apparent that the Sand Plague is not one of them, nor is it so local variant/strain of an otherwise already classified illness.
------------------------------
♦ SYMPTOMS ♦ [3.B]
------------------------------
- Dizziness (Usually the very first symptom one gets with the disease)
- Heavy fever (A sign of when the disease has entered it's critical phase)
- Coughing
- Yellow skin
- Excruciating migraine Bodily pain
- Festering boils
- Loss of faculties / capability of logic and reasoning after some time has passed
------------------------------
♦ MODUS OPERANDI ♦ [3.C]
------------------------------
This section of the journal will serve the purpose of recording observation and witness testimony of infected individuals as the disease takes root in their body, and the goings-on there within.
Upon becoming infected with the Sand Plague, the very first symptom to take root immediately after infection is dizziness. There afterwards when the fever culminates to becoming unbearable, this is a sign of the critical phase of the infection and that the Sand Plague is beginning to take hold throughout the body.
The latent stage of the infection, that is to say the beginning just after infection, is not lethal. However, interaction with infected environments will only increase the infection further.
------------------------------
♦ SPREAD ♦ [3.D]
------------------------------
- Human to human contact has been confirmed.
- The disease has an aersol form, confirming contact via breathing and possibly airborne.
- Skin contact with certain infected surfaces.
------------------------------
♦ RESEARCH ♦ [3.E]
------------------------------
- Initial inspection of a blood sample taken from an infected corpse showed only dead cells and bodily detritus. This suggests that the plague bacteria does not survive in corpses. Upon expiration of the host the microbial also dies out/leave, with no longer having appropriate living conditions necessary to satisfy it's needs. In short - it needs warm blood rich in oxygen.
------------------------------
♦ THEORY ♦ [3.F]
------------------------------
- Theory posited by Daniil that the plague causes massive contamination of the blood, and in so doing overloads the cardiac muscle. This then causes a stroke in the victims.
- The Sand Plague can be managed in it's earliest stage, with the help of items like antibiotics, though it can not be defeated.
- If an infected individual in the early stages of the plague whom is keeping it under control comes into contact with the plague again, the progress of the infection will increase rapidly, thus resulting in a quickly deteriorating condition for the infected individual.
- Evidence seems to support theory that plague microbial cannot survive in non-organic environments. It does manifest on walls and streets, but dies as quickly as it spreads. The evidence to support my theory regards the fact that once infected districts (Skinner) have now become clean... the only possible way this could have happened is if it died out. The Sand Plague is indeed a bacteria.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
♠ FIGHTING THE PLAGUE ♠ [3.2]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
• Day 3: Quarantines have begun

• Day 4:
- The Olgimskys have begun turning certain buildings into facilities needed to fight the Sand Plague. Said facilities listed below:
> Morgue: Has been placed in the "Wastehouse", in the Bull Project Industrial Zone.
> Cathedral: Turned into a isolation house/sanitarium.
> Theater: Isolation Ward
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
♠ VACCINE STATUS ♠ [3.3]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- As of Day 4, Rubin has managed to construct a primitive vaccine. It is not great, not is it as efficient as a vaccine must usually be to be considered acceptable for use - but we have neither the time nor the laboratory equipment so any progress made whatsoever must be taken into consideration and used to it's fullest potential.
Normally, vaccines can take one or more years for research, testing, incubation, creation, and administering, while a team of professionals with a extremely well equipped laboratory is required to even think about beginning the process of vaccine creation, especially for something that for all intents and purposes is "new" to the medical world, and has not been catalogued prior by any legitimate physician nor has it been recorded in any medical textbook.
We have neither the time, staff, or equipment necessary. We are fighting out matched, out gunned, and out of time. The good news is that any progress on a vaccine, primitive or not, is progress nonetheless. The bad news is that Rubin is unable to sustain the microbial culture that allows him to experiment with, incubate, and synthesize said vaccines... meaning our preciously small suppy will run out sooner rather than later, and there is no telling if we will be able to replace it as the bacterium seems to die out almost immediately once the infected host expires.
Rubin has told me the process to making these vaccines has something to do with combining the bacteria with some sort of tincture or mixture of local herbs... it is hardly the way I would prefer to go about creating a vaccine, but I am not a botanist, and I must trust Rubin as he is more familiar with the Steppe than I. I will update this section of my journal accordingly to report on the status of the vaccine's development.

2023.12.14 13:25 MassiveBereavement_ New Dunnes open in Point Village Shopping Centre

Hopefully okay to post on this sub, but after what I believe is 10 years, Dunnes have finally opened their anchor store in the Point Village morgue shopping centre by the 3arena.
Have to say, it’s a great looking shop with the deli, pizza, fishmongers, and a great selection of stock. Very welcome addition to the area. Hopefully this will increase footfall in the centre and attract a few more businesses to move in. With the nearby residential developments, great to see a positive development.
Edit: just realised this reads like Dunnes Store propaganda - not at all, but just happy to have a well stocked and varied supermarket in the area at last!

2023.12.10 12:10 bdrhnc24 To those who are saying Palestinian death toll is “not true”

Here is the report from Reuters on the matter. You’re free to read the entire article if you want. You’ll see that numbers are not just deemed credible by U.N, but by international organizations and universities, and even by Israel. Numbers are of course imperfect and also seem to fall behind the actual estimated death toll recently, since it gets harder and harder to count the deaths as communication and rescue tools are heavily damaged. https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/how-many-palestinians-have-died-gaza-war-how-will-counting-continue-2023-12-06/
HOW CREDIBLE ARE THE CASUALTY FIGURES TO DATE?
Pre-war Gaza had robust population statistics - from a 2017 census and more recent U.N. surveys - and well-functioning health information systems better than in most Middle East countries, public health experts told Reuters. Oona Campbell, professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said Palestinian health authorities have longstanding credibility with their methods of maintaining baseline statistics and tracking deaths in general, not just during times of war. U.N. agencies rely on them.
"Palestinian data collection capabilities are professional and many ministry staff have been trained in the United States. They work hard to ensure statistical fidelity," said Yale University's Raymond.
On Oct. 26 the PA Health Ministry published a 212-page report with the names, ages and ID numbers of 7,028 Palestinians it recorded as dead from air strikes - after U.S. President Joe Biden cast doubt on the casualty figures. Campbell and two other academics analysed the data for a Lancet medical journal report on Nov. 26 and concluded there was no obvious reason to doubt their validity. "We consider it implausible that these patterns (of mortality rates) would arise from data fabrication," the researchers wrote. The PA Health Ministry has not issued a similar detailed report since, a reflection of fading communications with Gaza.
There were questions about casualty figures reported from an Oct. 17 explosion at al-Ahli al-Arabi Baptist hospital in Gaza City. Gaza's health ministry said 471 people were killed in the blast, which Palestinians said was caused by an Israeli air strike but which Israel and outside groups including Human Rights Watch said was probably caused by a misfiring Palestinian rocket. An unclassified U.S. intelligence report estimated the death toll "at the low end of the 100 to 300 spectrum". But overall, international bodies have attested to the reliability of Palestinian casualty figures.
WHAT DOES ISRAEL SAY?
A senior Israeli official told journalists on Monday that around a third of those killed in Gaza so far were enemy combatants, estimating their number at less than 10,000 but more than 5,000, without detailing how the estimate was reached. The official said the total count of some 15,000 dead as of Monday given by Palestinian authorities, who do not break down the count between civilians and combatants, is "more or less" right.
Rights groups and researchers say the high civilian toll arises from heavy weapons used - including so-called "bunker buster" bombs aimed at destroying Hamas' strategic tunnel network - and strikes on residential districts where Israel says Hamas has hidden militant bases, rocket launch pads and weaponry within and under apartment blocks and hospitals.
ARE THE PUBLISHED CASUALTY NUMBERS COMPREHENSIVE?
No, experts told Reuters.
"Our monitoring suggests that the numbers provided by the Ministry of Health may be under-reporting as they do not include fatalities who did not reach hospitals or may be lost under the rubble," the U.N. human rights office spokesperson said. "It is a logical assumption that the numbers being reported are underestimated, are low," said Nathaniel Raymond, Executive Director of the Humanitarian Research Lab at the Yale School of Public Health, who has worked on death counts in armed conflict and natural disasters for more than 20 years. The PA's Oct. 26 report said at least 1,000 bodies could not be recovered or brought to morgues, citing families interviewed by its Gaza staff - a clear and plausible example of the impact of war "on data capture and reporting", the Lancet article read. The number of bodies feared buried under the rubble now reaches into the thousands and much of the Gaza civil defence force's digging equipment has been destroyed in air strikes, the PA's health minister al-Kaila said on Tuesday.
WHAT'S THE BREAKDOWN OF CHILDREN VERSUS ADULTS KILLED?
The United Nations, as well as Israeli and Palestinian law, define a child as someone under the age of 18, though some Hamas militants are believed to be teenagers. The PA health ministry said on Tuesday about 70% of Gaza's dead were women and children under 18, but it has released no breakdown of age categories since its Oct. 26 report. The Lancet article said the ministry report's data showed that 11.5% of the deaths recorded between Oct. 7-26 were children between ages 0 and 4, 11.5% between ages 5 and 9, 10.7% between 10 and 14 and 9.1% between 15 and 19. "There was a distinct peak among men aged 30–34 years, possibly reflecting combatant or civilian exposures (e.g., first responders at bomb sites, journalists, and people going out to seek water and food for their families)," it said.

Israel continues intense bombardment of the Gaza Strip, as health facilities and humanitarian aid efforts are crumbling due to intense fighting.
White House aide says US has “not given a firm deadline to Israel” to end military operations in the besieged enclave.
21 hospitals in Gaza now out of service: Government media
Aside from the hospitals that have been put out of service, at least 110 health centres also stopped its operation since the war broke out between Israel and Hamas on October 7, according to the latest data from Gaza’s media department.
The report also said that during the same period, 287 medical personnel were killed in Israeli strikes.
At least 58 ambulances were also destroyed making it harder to transport injured victims.

Gaza fighting continues amid ‘apocalyptic’ conditions; Security Council to meet Friday
Two months to the day since Hamas’ terror attacks in Israel prompted a massive Israeli military retaliation in Gaza, the situation in the war-torn enclave is becoming “apocalyptic” with hostilities making meaningful humanitarian efforts “nearly impossible”, UN humanitarians warned on Thursday.
In a joint statement 27 aid organisations including UN agencies and their partners issued a call for an immediate stop to the fighting, stressing that conditions in Gaza are “amongst the worst we have witnessed”.

HUMANITARIAN UPDATE
‘All we do is count bodies’, Gaza health official says: Munir al-Bursh, director-general of the Health Ministry in Gaza, who has just lost a number of his relatives in an Israeli army attack, has a grim message to pass along.
The Israeli occupation wants to kill hope, it wants to kill our youths, our children, and women…[they] do not differentiate between a child and the elderly…Today, those wounded in Gaza die of bleeding … We cannot do anything for them. They [Israeli forces] emptied hospitals of their supplies and left them as morgues to large numbers of bodies.
All we do is count bodies.

Video of Israelis singing ‘from the river to the sea’ sparks debate
In a recent video, a group of Israelis are seen singing a song with the refrain ‘From the river to the sea, Israel gonna be free.’ This song has stirred controversy due to its provocative lyrics. The verses express a sentiment of Israeli impatience reaching its limits, with lines like ‘We won’t stop even if the world asks for a chance’ and ‘We will not break, and we will not forgive.’ The song also includes a direct reference to Gaza: ‘Do you hear this plane? Going to Gaza.’
These lyrics have sparked debate and are interpreted as reflecting the intense and harsh military actions of the Israeli army in Gaza, which have led to high rates of civilian casualties.

This Off-Guardian report was started yesterday; continues today.( https://off-guardian.org/2023/12/05/10-questions-about-gaza-part-1/ )
(Much valuable information) as with:
In May 2021, the Israel Defense Forces, which included 160 fighter jets, bombed the Gaza Strip with high-explosive weapons dropped on heavily populated areas for 11 days. The planes dropped their loads from high altitude, which facilitated them gaining the velocity required to penetrate the surface of the ground. A delayed fuse meant their one tonne payload of explosives detonated underground, destroying the cellars, bunkers and tunnels in which not only Hamas militants but also Gazan civilians took cover from the bombardment.
In one half-hour period, the IDF dropped 450 such bombs, the largest in their arsenal, at a rate of one every five seconds into the subsoil of Gaza, sending shockwaves through the earth.
The result was 259 Palestinians killed, including 66 children and 41 women, and 2,211 injured. In addition, 6 hospitals and 11 medical clinics were destroyed, 53 schools, a bookshop that held an estimated 100,000 books, as well as 1,042 homes and commercial units in 258 buildings, including 4 residential tower blocks.
The Israeli Government claimed these towers were being used by Hamas for military purposes. However, Human Rights Watch has challenged the truth of this claim, declaring that the air strikes ‘violated the laws of war and may amount to war crimes’. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimated that, as a result of these strikes, 72,000 Palestinians in Gaza were displaced.
In support of the steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in solidarity with their courageous and honorable resistance, Hezbollah continued on Thursday striking the various occupation sites on Lebanon border, inflicting heavy losses upon the Israeli enemy.
The Islamic Resistance fighters targeted on Thursday, 07/12/2023 at 07:00, Al-Marj Site and Ramim Forest [the occupied Lebanese Hounin village] with appropriate weapons, scoring direct hits, Hezbollah military media said in a first statement.
The second statement indicated that the Islamic Resistance fighters targeted on Thursday, 07/12/2023 at 11:00 AM, Ma’ayan Baruch Site with appropriate weapons, scoring direct hits.
According to the third statement, the Islamic Resistance fighters targeted on Thursday, 07/12/2023 at 12:40 PM Al-Marj Site [the occupied Lebanese Hounin village] with appropriate weapons, scoring direct hits.
The fourth statement affirmed that the Islamic Resistance fighters targeted on Thursday, 07/12/2023 at 02:15 PM, a gathering of Israeli soldiers near Mitat barracks with appropriate weapons, inflicting confirmed casualties.

How did we get here? How did we get to this moment where the Jews setting policy for the State of Israel, many of whom are sons and daughters of survivors and victims of the Shoah, as well as their Zionist apologists in the UK, are now speaking and behaving exactly like the Nazis that killed so many of their own people, while at the same time describing their victims as themselves ‘Nazis’?
Let’s start with what is called ‘collective punishment’, which is, paradoxically, both a policy of war and a war crime. Under both Article 50 of the Hague Convention and Article 33 of the Geneva Convention (IV), collective punishment is a war crime. This hasn’t, however, stopped it being perpetrated by the signatories to both Conventions, which include Germany, the US, the UK and Israel.
https://countercurrents.org/2023/12/israels-ai-targeting-puts-all-the-people-of-gaza-in-the-crosshairs/
Now Israeli whistleblowers have provided details of how these crimes against humanity are being carried out – and how they are being rationalised internally within Israel’s military and political echelons.
An extraordinary series of testimonies jointly published by the Israel-based publications 972 and Local Call last week established that the huge death toll of Palestinian civilians is, in fact, integral to Israel’s war aims, not an unfortunate side effect.
The known dead so far are estimated at almost 16,000, with a further 6,000 missing, presumably crushed under rubble. Two-thirds of those killed by Israel are women and children.
Two years ago, during an earlier attack on Gaza, Israeli military officials admitted for the first time that a computer was supplying them with potential targets. The intention appears to have been to bypass the restraints imposed by human assessments of likely casualties by outsourcing the killings to a machine.
The whistleblowers confirm that, given new, generous parameters of who and what can be attacked, the artificial intelligence system, called “Gospel”, is generating lists of targets so rapidly the military cannot keep up.
Israel’s inputs are now so broad that they allow the bombing without warning of high-rise apartment blocks, so long as it can be claimed that one person residing there is believed to have a connection to Hamas.

2023.11.02 02:42 Docssy CSII Modding QOL / Diversity Wish List [ Discussion]

I figure I'll put out a wish list as I'm staring at a 117K city urban sprawl hellhole on SanFran barely growing because the simulation is so slow.
I'll bypass the obvious mods that are needed for performance reasons. Think of this list of what's missing from what you wanted in a next-generation city builder. What city infrastructure was overlooked. Assuming performance was not the problem, what QOL mods would you imagine to make the current experience absolutely lit for you?
If a mod wants to sticky this, that'd be super rad
Here we go with my thoughts!
Roads and Traffic
Residential
Commercial
Mixed Use Zoning
Small Office / Small Industrial
Industrial
Big Office
Waste Management
Water
Power
Farming
Ore Production
Oil (and gas) Field Production
Parks
Communications
Water
Alternate Transportation
Police
Fire
Healthcare
Education
Special cases
All I got for now. My city grew to 119K since I started this. The mod community cannot come fast enough!!!
Comment with your wishes and comments on how certain ideas could be integrated. Heck, declare the start of a project! Let us make it known to the community and to Colossal Order what the citizens want!

2023.10.25 08:43 MasterAuthor9 Let's make Prototype 3, Part 2 (Fixing the story)

Welcome back, y'all. You've all probably seen Part 1 of my now three-part post on Prototype 3, where I covered the mistakes made by the first two Prototype games (janky/repetitive/extremely hard gameplay for the first game and an utterly deplorable story for the second one). If not, the link to it is above. Now that we got the unpleasant part out of the way, it's time for designing the story for the third game so that it fixes the bad writing of the second. This is going to be the second part of three because there's so much to get into here.

Part 2: New Revelations

(Remember that this is just a concept so please don't go after me in the comments about clickbait.)
Alex Mercer Lives:
The most important thing to start off our new Prototype 3 is to undo the biggest mistake of its predecessor Prototype 2: turning our boy Alex Mercer into a hollow, uninteresting villain and then killing him off. However, we don't need to reboot the entire series to do this, for three reasons. One is that I think doing so would be a disservice to series newcomer James Heller, who although in Prototype 2 he gets practically no character development or progression and is basically a jerk to everyone he meets, still has a ton of potential just waiting to be harvested and I feel just needs one more outing to fix the issues that the second game's terrible writing saddled him with. The second reason is that the first game already covered all the ground we would need for a reboot and its story is already good enough that it doesn't really need any changes there, which a reboot would near-inevitably bring. If we need a reboot, they can just remaster the first game or remake it later, but this is a threequel, Prototype 3, that we're talking about here. We can't just retcon the events of the second game (although I think most of us would love that), since it's an official entry in the series and is a bit hard to ignore despite how bad its story is. Which brings me to the third reason why this game isn't a reboot: we don't have to ignore Alex Mercer's fall from grace and death in the second game, just retroactively change his identity. What do I mean by this and how do we do it? Simple, really.
Mercer's Reflections: The opening cutscene for our new Prototype 3 concept redoes the cutscene at the end of the first Prototype game with better visuals and graphics (and the soothing voice of Barry Pepper giving vocals once again), showing friendly neighborhood bioweapon Alex Mercer getting blasted apart by a nuke that was meant to destroy New York, then his mulched remains absorbing a crow and him regenerating back into a full body. He then goes on his whole spiel from the original version of the cutscene about how he found the truth, didn't like it and wishes he could forget it, then talks about how New York suffered for the original Alexander J. Mercer's mistakes and how he released the Blacklight Virus at Penn Station, how that'll always haunt Prototype Mercer since he can't stop reliving the lives and memories of the thousand screaming dead men he killed during the events of the game.
This new cutscene has Mercer then run out of New York City, find an abandoned Blackwatch helicopter and disguise himself as a pilot, then start it up before flying off to parts unknown (which we'll get to in a bit). In the meantime, the camera then cuts back to New York, to an underground sewer that Blackwatch hasn't cleaned out yet, where a small patch of Mercer's biomass left over from the nuke incident has landed/leaked down into. A rat starts sniffing at this patch of biomass before getting tendriled and consumed like the crow earlier, before a timelapse begins of the tiny patch slowly growing into a larger collection of biomass with a humanoid shape, then a replica of Mercer, while OG Mercer's narration sounds in the background: "What have I become? Something less than human, but also something more." Just as he says "more", the replica slowly gets up and looks menacingly at the camera with a slight red glow in its eyes and an evil smile.
This is how we bring back Alex Mercer while keeping his evil self from the second game and acknowledging his defeat and death there: two Alex Mercers, one good (the version from Prototype) and one evil (the version from Prototype 2). Mercer isn't alive in this concept for the third game because he somehow came back from Heller eating him in the second one, he's alive because he never died in the first place, because it wasn't him that started the second outbreak, created the Evolved and then tried to infect the world before being defeated and eaten by Heller. That was an evil, or perhaps more easily corrupted, clone of Mercer that was either born with, or developed over time (if you want to keep the comics canon), a messianic god complex and sociopathic mentality as we see in the second game. This "hollow" Mercer was the one that was responsible for Heller's wife's death and the one that tried to kidnap his daughter and torture her to spite him. Where has the "real" Alex Mercer been all this time? Well, the cutscene explains that right after the big reveal about the two Mercers.
Cue a cut to black and Mercer narrating "It's been two years since the first outbreak," before a fade-in to San Francisco (we'll get to that in a bit) in the year 2010, indeed two years after the events of the first game. A random guy is seen walking around the city among fellow law-abiding citizens, then at an office job, then talking to someone on the phone, then buying food and supplies at a store. The man then rides on one of San Francisco's Muni trains to one of the residential districts of the city before walking up a hill and a set of steps to an apartment building, where he gets his keys and heads into his apartment, puts his purchases and groceries on the table, then heads into the bathroom and looks at himself in the mirror. Some shifting tendrils of viral biomass later and Alex Mercer, jacket, hood and all, is standing there, looking at himself in the mirror while his narration sounds: "Back then, I used to spend my days hunting. Now, I spend them hiding. I don't want to hurt anyone else, so I just pretend to be someone I'm not." Mercer then doubles over clutching his head as he experiences flashbacks from the events of the first game and keeps seeing the faces of the men and monsters he consumed, making it clear that he's suffering from something like PTSD due to the lingering memories from their minds and brains, and the psychological weight of all his actions in the first game weighing on him. Mercer then curls up on the floor of the bathroom in a fetal position and just rocks back and forth there, silently sobbing, while his voice narrates in the background "After I got out of New York, I knew Blackwatch would be scouring the entire eastern seaboard looking for me. So I fled, to the opposite side of the country, where I knew they wouldn't think I would go. I used the face and body of one of the New York outbreak victims as a disguise to start over here, to leave the past behind and try to live something close to a normal life, but no matter how far I ran or how well I hid from all the people that wanted me dead... I still can't escape the visions, the nightmares, the memories that don't fade no matter how hard I try to forget them. Even though Gentek and Blackwatch can't find me anymore... I'm still not safe from the past... from myself."
A scene of Mercer in his civilian disguise is then seen, timestamped the year before in 2009, with him picking up a newspaper dropped into his mail slot. Mercer reads it, and his eyes grow wider and wider as he reads about the second outbreak in New York and how an "Alex Mercer" is being blamed for it and the virus has even been named the "Mercer Virus". Mercer knows he can't be responsible for this second outbreak as he was over 2500 miles away when it started, but when he sees a picture in the newspaper of a man who looks exactly like him, pictures of James Heller and the Evolved, he starts doubting everything about himself and trying to make sense of everything. He's also seen reading the newspaper about the end of the second outbreak (after what Heller did at the end of the second game) and wondering how someone managed to impersonate him and start another outbreak, then almost destroy the world, and whether or not this is his fault by proxy. The cutscene then cuts to Mercer sitting on the side of his apartment bed in the present, contemplating everything while his voice narrates in the background "Ever since that day I've longed to find out the truth and learn who was behind it all, who stole my face and tried to frame me for all the twisted things they did. I can't go back to New York and risk getting found out again or hurting anyone else. There must be another way..."
Mercer then abruptly feels a strange pulse sweep across him (Heller's viral sonar from the second game) and instantly recognizes the sensations he's feeling as the detection of another Prototype by his Blacklight senses. He then realizes, while staring edgily at the camera in true Alex Mercer fashion, "There's only one person who could trip my alarms like that... James Heller. He's the key to all of this. Only he knows what happened... and only he can tell me more."
Heller's Reflections: Cue a rapid-movement camera flight across the city to the San Francisco International Airport, where James and Maya Heller, accompanied by Dana Mercer, are seen getting off a plane from Duluth, Minnesota, and the narration voice switches to Heller, who explains what he, Dana and Maya have been up to in the year since the second outbreak and his wife Colette's death: after Heller defeated and consumed who he thinks was Alex Mercer, the remaining Evolved gained their free will back and most, horrified at what they'd become, took their own lives, while the rest either went into hiding or were killed by Blackwatch. At the same time, the U.S. government was alerted by a whistleblower within the ranks of Blackwatch, who sent them tons of documented information on the atrocities committed by the organization's operatives and claimed that most were committed with the knowing consent and encouragement of the NYZ division's leader, mentally ill and psychologically unstable Warren Bailey (this guy's also a covert Neo-Nazi and is going to come back into the story later). When federal troops went to arrest Bailey, they found that he'd already fled, while the upper-level personnel of the NYZ division, including Colonel Rooks from the second game, claimed that Bailey threatened their families and livelihoods if they didn't do what he said, which included actively disregarding civilian lives, hiring new members from prisons, and essentially encouraging Blackwatch troops to shoot whoever they thought was infected or didn't comply immediately and exactly. (This is a bit weak but it's the only way I can explain why Blackwatch was so messed up in the second game and how I can explain them getting back on track to their behavior in the first one for this game.)
During all of this, Heller was still seen as an associate of Mercer or at least an anarchistic terrorist (in typical fashion) and was a wanted man, so he planned to flee the city with his daughter Maya and head west to Duluth, Minnesota, to hide out as he and Maya had relatives that lived there. By this time, Maya had basically taken Dana Mercer as her mother figure and saw Dana as her adopted mother, so having nothing else left in New York for her and with Blackwatch after her anyway for assisting Heller, Dana moved west with him and Maya to Minnesota via a long road trip that involved frequent stops to hide from police and military patrols, and frequent periods of "going dark", i.e. going off the grid and camping in forests off the main roads. It took a whole three months to make it to Duluth this way, but the benefit was that Heller, Maya and Dana all made it there relatively undetected, so they were able to stay safely in Duluth for about nine months or so until an off-duty Blackwatch officer spotted them at a Caribou coffee shop and immediately gave Blackwatch their location (Heller, Maya and Dana weren't considered terrorists by the greater U.S. government, just by Blackwatch as Warren Bailey rightly considered them a threat to his plans and had them labeled as such, as you see in the second game with Dana and Heller), so the three had to move again. This time, they bought tickets at Duluth International Airport for a plane to San Francisco, since nobody really knew who they were or thought anything of it in the western US, so they escaped to San Francisco undetected with the same mindset as Alex; Blackwatch would be so focused on surveilling the eastern and now midwestern regions of the U.S. that they wouldn't think to look to the true west and therefore a west-coast city like San Francisco would be the perfect place to hide and start over, which is exactly what the trio did. The reason I have to write all this out is because this is what Heller is narrating in this part of our imaginary cutscene.
Why did I choose San Francisco? Because that's the closest fitting major city (aside from L.A. which doesn't work nearly as well) to the place where our little old lore buddy Pariah was being held: Vandenberg Air Force Base. It also feels a lot like New York in a lot of ways, and you'll see why this is so important in Part 3, but for now let's get on to the most important part of the opening stuff: Alex Mercer and James Heller meeting face to face, for real this time. Heller uses his viral sonar to see if the coast is clear when he, Dana and Maya arrive so that he knows there's no trace of Blacklight and it's safe to set up shop in San Francisco, but the sonar detects a single being infected with Blacklight, another prototype, no less. Heller, suddenly having flashbacks to the second outbreak in New York, leaves Maya with Dana for safekeeping while he goes to "See about an old friend", fearing the worst.
Heller Meets Mercer, Take 2: The next bit could be something of an interactive cutscene where the player controls either Heller or Mercer (see part 3 for explanation) and we get back into the good old fashioned sprinting, wall running, charged jump and gliding tutorial. Since Alex and Heller already have all their powers from the previous games, the only thing the tutorials do is have you break through the mental blocks they've put on said powers to try to run away from the past and pretend they're still human, which will be covered further in the third part.
Anyway, Heller and Mercer meet face to face, and Heller of course immediately wants to kill Mercer, thinking he's the same "Alex Mercer" that started the second outbreak and therefore indirectly killed his wife Colette and his close friend Father Guerra, kidnapped Maya and tried to destroy the world. Mercer tries to explain that he had nothing to do with these things, that he doesn't want to hurt Heller or his daughter, and that the two of them don't have to fight, but Heller ignores this and says something like "I'm gonna do what I was sure I'd done last year. And this time you're not gonna come back from it." Heller then pins Mercer down and tries to consume him, but Mercer grabs Heller's arm and his arm partially melds with Heller's, allowing the two to merge minds and experience a brief flash of each other's memories.
Mercer's side: Mercer gets an answer to why Heller hates him so much and finally finds out who was responsible for the second outbreak, as he sees all the memories of his copy, or "Recrem" as we'll call him for simplicity, from the moment he's cloned from the nuke regeneration to the moment he's defeated and eaten by Heller, leading Mercer to realize that it wasn't an impostor committing all of "Alex Mercer's" crimes during the second outbreak, but a copy of him grown from part of his own flesh and blood. On top of this, Mercer experiences Heller's actions and experiences during the second game, from losing his wife to the infected, to becoming a Prototype at the hands of Recrem, to defeating and consuming Recrem. Even though the OG or "Human" Mercer knows he's technically not responsible for the actions of his clone as he had no knowledge of said clone and had no way of stopping Recrem, he's still overcome with guilt at everything Recrem did, all while wearing his face. Mercer begins to feel like he didn't do enough to prevent the second outbreak and adopts a similar atoner mindset to what he had in the first game, deciding to help Heller, which we'll get more into in Part 3, to make up for his past inaction and Recrem's crimes, even though Recrem is a separate entity from Mercer and therefore he's not technically responsible.
Heller's side: Heller sees and learns about all of Mercer's memories, from waking up in the morgue to the first outbreak to getting nuked to fleeing New York, but doesn't see anything from the second outbreak in there, only snippets from Mercer's life of hiding in San Francisco for the last two years. This is where Heller gets his first real bit of character development since the second game and lets go of his grudge against Mercer since he sees that Mercer's telling the truth. Heller in that moment understands that Mercer isn't his enemy and isn't responsible for everything that happened during the second outbreak, because it wasn't him. In that moment, Heller goes from seeing Mercer as a kill-on-sight enemy to a man stuck in Heller's own position, turned into a monster and trying to run away from his past and demons, which makes Heller's attitude go from one of anger to one of pity. After Mercer explains to Heller about how Recrem was created and how he was the one responsible for the outbreak, Colette and Guerra's deaths, and Heller's transformation into a Prototype, rather than Mercer himself, Heller also realizes that Recrem is likely dormant somewhere within him and that now that he's beginning to reawaken his powers, he may have to fight to keep control of his own body now.
To be covered in Part 3:
Pariah's role in the story (he's NOT the bad guy, surprisingly), Blackwatch's makeover and (partial) redemption, the return of Warren Bailey (this guy makes Recrem and even his own Blackwatch underlings from the second game look tame by comparison with how utterly twisted, depraved and just plain batshit insane he is), the overall gameplay loop and construction of the game, the multiplayer aspect (yes, there will be multiplayer in this concept), Mercer's attempts to clear his name and redeem himself to Heller and his own sister Dana, Heller's ongoing struggle with Recrem's influence and keeping Dana and Maya safe, the nature of the third outbreak (yes, you heard that right), and how it all comes together for an explosive finale. Stay tuned ladies and gents.
Note: the reason Heller still thinks Recrem was Mercer before he meets the real Mercer is that Recrem, being a clone, had all of Mercer's memories right up to the point of the nuclear blast that reduced Mercer to mulch. After this, their memories diverge, so Recrem had all of Mercer's memories only up to the point he was cloned via the regeneration process, but after this he only had his own memories that he formed himself up to and during the events of Prototype 2. Therefore, Heller thinks Recrem is the original, since Mercer isn't seen anywhere in Recrem's own memories because he and Recrem never met each other. Heller only learns that it was Recrem and not Mercer who he defeated and consumed, Recrem and not Mercer who started the second outbreak, when he sees Mercer's memories and finally sees his side of the story.
Supreme Hunter Theory: Recrem could also be the remains of Supreme Hunter that consumed part of Mercer after their fight at the end of the first game and took on Mercer's appearance and a fragmented part of his personality, which would further explain Recrem's behavior in the second game.

2023.07.26 08:30 Alive_Recognition_81 New home owners across the street are turning the place into a morgue.

The house across the street from us was recently sold and the new owners are in the process of turning it into a morgue.
This is in a residential area, across from families and a playground. The far side of the street was deemed C1 (commercial) for zoning under qualifying circumstances and approval.
These new owners have not spoken to anyone in the area about it, they have not received or inquired about any permits as of yet, in fact, the municipality found out when my neighbor went in to the hall to ask what the hell is going on.
What should our steps be going forward to stop this from happening. This is going to drive the streets house value down, there is an elementary school one block away where close to 100-150 kids walk past this house daily, we have little kids that don't need to see this, they have two sea cans in the backyard that are painted white that say DB coolers.
This is an area that is crawling with children from the area and it seems inappropriate to set up this kind of business in the area.
Emotions aside, they are planning on building it to operation then applying for everything using the excuse that it's all set up and it's a C1 zoning.
What permitting will they be needing? How can we as a community get in front of this to stop it? Should a lawyer be present immediately or should i keep on the municipality and by-law first?
Please, any insight or ideas on how to stop this from happening would be so greatly appreciated.

2023.07.25 16:31 Sortarican88 Pete Davidson Gets Off Easy

Pete Davidson Gets Off Easy
No, I'm not talking about what he does with all these women that are way out of his league. Page Six is reporting that Pete Davidson got off with a slap on the wrist for his reckless driving charge. Back in early March, Davidson was driving with his girlfriend Chase Sui around Beverly Hills when he hopped the curb, hit a fire hydrant and slammed into the corner of a residential home. Pete was not found to be under the influence at the time and he was not arrested at the scene.
Scene of the accident, The Flats in Beverly Hills, CA
Just two days before his scheduled arraignment, Pete skated charges with a sweetheart diversion program with the Los Angeles County District Attorney. Pete will have no criminal record if he;
  1. Completes 50 Hours of Community Service
  2. Attends 12 hours of traffic school
  3. Is "educated at a hospital or morgue on the possible results of reckless driving".
As inexplicable as his meteoric rise to fame, he will be allowed to complete his community service with the FDNY where his father worked. Let's be real, Pete isn't going to be fighting fires or responding to medical emergencies. I'm sure 50 hours of eating chili and watching TV with the boys will really set him straight. Also doesn't have ugatz to do with the community he offended, the good people of Beverly Hills! The homeowners won't even sue him.
Even Sandra Bullock in 28 days didn't get off this easy! What deal with the devil did he sign? How does he continue to live on easy street when I can't even argue away a parking violation for being 6 inches too close to a hydrant?

2023.07.19 23:26 ThatLousyGamer Filthy professions.

As technology and medicine advanced, the galactic community banded together in intergalactic mega structures floating through space, melting pots of all races held together with high tensile materials, and no small amount of prayers.
This is the stories of the people making that possible.
"Hello, my name's Mick Roe, and this is a very filthy profession." A human in a rubber waders said with a smile.
The film crew around him made up of all kinds of different races, all of which were wearing heavily insulated biohazard suits.
"Now, today we're gonna be working with a friend of mine. Meet Bob." The Mick gestured towards another human wearing waders busily shoveling a mountainous dark colored mass.
"So, Bob, what are we doing today?" Mick said cheerily, as if he wasn't in a sewer.
"We're unclogging the fifteenth main of the residential district of floor 98. Basically a big pile'o shit in every language spoken." Bob said with a straight faced frown of a blue-collar worker.
"It certainly doesn't smell like flowers. I'll tell you that much." Mick said to the shaky camera as the Torpion holding it began gagging and throwing up in his suit, another quickly taking over as he went topside for decontamination.
"Seems our camera guy had a weak stomach." Mick said to Bob, grinning.
"Yeah, they ain't real good with dirty work, part of the reason this job is so important. If this clog seals up the line for too long, it'll hammer the main and explode, spewing this shit everywhere." Bob explained, never pausing his shoveling.
"And that would be very bad indeed, as most of our viewers know, even a miniscule amount of foreign fecal matter can send most to the hospital, if not the morgue, that's why only humans can do many of these jobs, as the logistics involved in surviving a work day would be too expensive for anyone else, our crew being a perfect example of that." Mick explained to the camera.
"You gonna talk all day or grab a shovel?" Bob called over his shoulder, Mick quickly joining the other human knee deep... Literally.
"Now Bob, I hear they tried to replace you not too long ago. Can you shed some light on that?" Mick said in between breaths as he shovelled.
"Suits thought sending a robot down here would be the solution, all high-tech with all kinds of nozzles, only problem was the damn thing needed to be all but carried to its destination, and lugging around a four ton hunk'o steel wasn't exactly easy, they needed ten men to replace one... But of course, paper pushers are stubborn, so we let'em try it out... Heh, didn't take long for them to see the light, even if it was just a streetlamp." Bob explained, taking a step back to watch Mick shovel.
"Put some back into it, kid, or we'll be down here all day!" Bob yelled, his frown changing into a shit-eating grin.
After almost an hour, a spout of water jutted out the wall of excrement, the pressure and liquid widening the hole, carrying large chunks further down the stream.
"That'll do, we should get moving fast before the current knocks us on our asses, I'll tell you, that's something you only need to experience once." Bob warned as what remained of the crew frantically ran for the narrow service ladder leading up to the streets above.
After a lot of washing and hosing down in a mobile decontamination unit, the two humans sat down beside each other.
"You see, most races have been coddled beyond help at this point, their immune system relying on all kinds of drugs to keep'em going, they live in a sterile world... Or worlds, I guess," Bob said contemplatingly.
"But not us, huh?" Mick said with a smile.
"Sure as shit not. Where their medicine preceded all other inventions, we're the reverse. We waded through rivers of shit and garbage as we made our advancements. The first inter-solar expedition from earth had two plumbers on the crew, just in case one was knocked out of commission the other could still keep the shitters working." Bob told.
The camera panned out to reveal Bob's truck, a large logo saying -
Bob's T.U.R.D.S.
Total unwanted refuse disposal service.

Three New Terrifying True Scary Tales

Number One: The Pool

Now, this happened a very long time ago. I am not going to mention when or where though and I am submitting it anonymously. I don’t want people going back and finding out more about it and then lashing out of me.

I was 13 years old and my brother was 11. As I mentioned, this happened a long time ago and I think today, not a lot of parents would put a 13 year old in charge of an 11 year old. But this was not unusual at all back then. In fact, I was looking after my little brother all the time before either of us even hit 10 years old.

After a while, of course, always keeping my eye on him began to get very annoying. It interfered with my hanging out with friends. It was quite a drag when I would try to talk to girls. It was just a pain in the ass, really.

Anyway, one day during a really hot summer, our parents decided to drop us both off at the local swimming pool for the day. My dad had to work and my mom had errands and stuff to run plus work do to do for the church. It was so hot and there was no way we could afford air conditioning. We had one old fan in the house and a sprinkler in the yard that we could go play in. But the swimming pool was the much better option.

Of course the pool was very crowded. Lots of families would drop their kids off there during the summertime. And of course, even though I knew it already, my mom stressed to me, “Keep an eye on your little brother at all times.”

Some of my friends were at the pool too. I got to talking to them and they told me about this new girl who moved into town. She would be starting school that fall and supposedly she was really hot. So of course, I wanted to check her out. I knew the lifeguards would be watching my brother in the water, so he would be fine.

I went with the guys and the girl was really cute. My buddies all dared me to approach her, which was admittedly a brave thing for a 13 year old boy to do. Of course, I couldn’t chicken out in front of them, so I did just that.

She was a very sweet girl. We actually ended up talking for a little while. Her parents were at the pool though, and they called her back after too long. So I went back to the water to see how my little brother was doing.

The only problem was that I couldn’t see him anywhere in the water. This was a small town in a rural area, so although I said the pool was crowded, it wasn’t like a water park is crowded though. I should have easily been able to pick him out of the water. He just wasn’t there.

I went and searched around the area surrounding the pool and didn’t see him there either. My heart started beating faster and I began panicking. I went to the building where the showers and concession stand were. He wasn’t there either. You couldn’t leave that pool without going through that building, though. I asked the attendant if a 11 year old boy had left the pool on his own in the previous hour and he told me no.

I then went to the lifeguards and my buddies. I thought maybe there was a chance that I had missed him. It’s easy to occasionally miss someone in a crowd. The lifeguards ordered everyone out of the pool. Fortunately, there were no drowned children in the pool. Unfortunately, my brother was nowhere to be found outside of the pool.

The lifeguards had to call my mother at the church. I had never before lost track of my little brother like this before. I had no idea what to expect when she showed up. I was only thankful that the police were already at the pool or she probably would have whipped my ass right there in front of the entire pool.

The trouble I got into at home isn’t something that I want to go into very much. My butt very much has PTSD from the experience. But that was minor compared to the fear I felt for my little brother. Hell, I didn’t even have time to feel guilty although that I knew that I was. I was only concerned for him and wondered what would happen.

All day and night, I expected the police to bring him home. But that didn’t happen. I expected it the next day too. But it didn’t happen.

The town organized a search to look for him. I kept expecting to hear from them that they had found him. But that didn’t happen either.

After about a week of my brother not being found, I began fearing for the worst. I began thinking that he was dead. And I was terrified every waking moment of my life, expecting to absolutely hear the news that his dead body was found.

Nearly two weeks after the disappearance, we got a phone call from the police. They had found my brother and thankfully, he was alive. But unfortunately, that’s not the whole story.

Remember the attendant telling me that no boy had left on his own? Well that’s because the boy left with one of the lifeguards who was getting off duty. He had lured my brother out of the pool and into his car with promises of ice cream, something he and I rarely ever got. And my brother went to his house with him.

For all of that time, he kept my little brother locked up in his basement. He didn’t do anything sexually to him, thank God. But there was a lot of mental and some physical torment when my brother wouldn’t do what he was told to you. But the scariest part for him was thinking he would never get out and be with his family again.

Here is another weird part. The lifeguard wasn’t an adult. He did this while his parents were out of town for a few weeks. They came back early and caught him. And if you think I felt bad for my parents’ punishing me, what they did to him had to be legendary. The police thought he was either planning on killing or releasing my brother before his parents got home. But no one ever knew for sure.

He had to live with it without much help for a long time. Mental health assistance had a very bad stigma back then. But we’re both still alive today and he forgave me a long time ago.

Number Two: Taking the Garbage Out

A few weeks ago I went outside at around 3am to move the garbage to the curb since pickup would be in the morning. I often do this in the middle of the night. I just tend to keep weird hours and as the weather warms up for the summer I find the warm nights preferable to the sweltering days.

I’m not worried about bothering my neighbors since I don’t use noisy bins and all of the houses right next to me are currently empty. I actually find the quiet of the neighborhood at night quite relaxing.

Unfortunately since I don’t use bins animals are able to get into the bags a bit easier and while this doesn’t happen often it had happened on this night. So I was outside picking up the strewn around garbage and putting it into another bag when the silence of the night was suddenly broken by multiple police sirens.

At first they seemed distant and while they startled me it was not at all unheard of to hear sirens at night here. But usually it would be one in the distance. As I listened, still bagging the garbage, I could tell it was multiple sirens and they were getting closer. Then just as suddenly as it started it stopped again. There was just silence. By the time they stopped they sounded maybe four blocks away.

For a moment the night was silent again and I began hauling the bags to the curb when the neighborhood dogs began barking all at once. It was like every dog in the neighborhood had gotten the cue to start barking. Many were even howling. It continued for maybe a minute and once again it just stopped as suddenly as it had started.

I realized I hadn’t heard any barking or howling while the sirens were going and that’s normally how it would work. These dogs had started up separately from the sirens and just stopped all at once. It just wasn’t normal. I went back to the side of the house to grab more bags when the silence was broken a third time.

Just a single chime in the night. Like someone getting a phone notification. This sound wasn’t blocks away. This sound was here. RIGHT HERE. No more than feet away. As I said, the houses around me are empty.

I was done. The rest of the garbage would wait until morning. I didn’t see anyone close by but that just made it worse. There was someone close by that I couldn’t see. I immediately went into the house to leave the garbage for the morning.

I don’t know if these things were related. If the cops had been chasing someone who’s fleeing had caused the dogs to bark. Someone who received a message on their phone as they approached my house. Or if it was all just a coincidence. But I won’t be taking the garbage out at 3am anymore.

A Commuter’s Nightmare
William M.
06/30/2021

Back in the 80s, I worked at the Irwin Memorial Blood Bank in San Francisco while living and commuting from Oakland, CA

My job as Registrar, took me all over Northern California, during Blood Drives at hospitals, clinics, major corporations, etc., where we would sometimes witness firsthand, the dead, being placed on gurneys, running out of the Coroner's or Medical Examiner’s rear doors, and down the sidewalks, because they simply didn’t have enough room or staff inside the morgues to process them. Mortuaries were having problems too due to the massive overload where deceased loved ones were admitted but not processed or interred for months or even years at a time.

I remember watching the News and reading newspaper accounts of E.R.s in hospitals, clinics, etc. so clogged with patients, that 1 in 10 would die waiting to just get in to see a Dr. It was a Public Health and Safety nightmare. It was a National disgrace. It was politically orchestrated mass murder. It was the B purge of the ‘80s and ‘90s.

I remember, starting work early on one of many Blood Drives (the A.I.D.S. epidemic was just getting started) and having to catch the first B.A.R.T. (Bay Area Rapid Transit) train out of the station at about 4:00 am, where morning after morning I would witness hundreds of people sleeping on the benches, or the sidewalks, or on the streets outside, waiting for it to open.

Hundreds of others would be seen walking around like zombies in the early morning freeze amid the concomitant yelling, screaming, moaning, begging, and pleading, all of it looking like a newsreel of the death camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Many times, I was woken at home in the middle of the night, to the sounds of people howling and cursing outside my window at some real or imagined threat, until either the police came, which usually took hours because they were spread so thin, or some tenant, or other, ran them off.

I remember the time I woke up to the sound of a woman’s voice begging in the early morning cold for someone to help her. She kept repeating it over and over growing weaker and weaker until it was little more than a whisper.
By the time I’d gotten up, armed myself with the steel-reinforced baton I’d purchased at a Police Supply store, and ran the 5 floors down to the ground floor, I found her sitting in a taxi shivering from the 42-degree drizzle coming in off the Pacific. The cabbie told me it was alright; she was just cold and needed someplace to rest and warm up; He’d drop her off at one of the nearby shelters.

At the time, I was living in a local Residence Hall on Lake Merrit in Oakland, California which was little more than a converted Hotel from the San Francisco/Oakland Gilded Age of the late 1920s. It had 5 floors and a penthouse with a capacity of about 200. I never saw it get much beyond about 30 residents. It sported a full kitchen, dining area, big screen tv viewing room, swimming pool, and a recreation room with pool, foosball, and darts.

I lived with a friend, at the time, on the 5th floor just under the penthouse. There was an elevator, but like most refurbs, it didn’t work. That meant we'd have to climb 10 flights of stairs every day to reach our room. The best part was that we had the entire floor to ourselves. I guess nobody wanted to climb that many stairs. Because we were both runners, it was a little like running the 900 feet to the top of Angel Island, running across The Golden Gate Bridge and back, or running the 3.4 miles around Lake Merrit twice a day.

Because there was no air-conditioning, all the windows were left open during the summer months, but along with whatever cool air the San Francisco/Oakland Bay would bring through the gaping nearly wall-length vault ceilinged windows, it was always accompanied by the teeming, screaming City of Oakland street din: cabbies, buses, cars, trucks, vans, motorcycles, scooters, police sirens, ambulance, fire department, pedestrians, hustlers, druggies, break-dancers, prostitutes the homeless, et al. Day or night, winter or summer, it was like living in a jet engine test lab, somewhere on the 9th level of hell.

Of course, we could always close the windows against the noise 5 stories below. But if it was summer, with all the humidity coming off the bay, we’d roast like 2 suckling pigs in our own sweat even if we used a fan.

One night after a particularly grueling day at work, I came home, climbed Mount Everest (or at least K-2) to my steaming little abattoir, tore off my sports jacket, shirt, and tie, and fell into a coma-like sleep only to awake some 4 hours later to the sound of someone slamming a door, over and over, seemingly as hard as they could. It was about 2:00 am and raining so hard the water was pouring through the open window and flooding the floor and carpet. The sound was coming somewhere down the hall from one of the other units.

After about the 15th or 16th slam to my inner ear, I was up, as in a trance, running like a lunatic from unit to unit and window to window, covering the entire southside of the 5th floor; battening down the hatches, and getting drenched in the process. It was, how should I say: exhilaratingly infuriating. I was supposed to get up in 2 hours and commute to work in the upper peninsula.
Having unconsciously completed this Sisyphean task and realizing that there was zero chance of getting any sleep, I donned my foul weather gear, equipped my trusty baton (I used to tuck its 2 ½-foot length up my sleeve when running), and headed out the front door to Lake Merrit which was just outside the main entrance. From there, I trotted to the sidewalk circling the lake, and began to run.

As I ran counterclockwise against a torrential rain with a gale-force wind broken only by the occasional intermittent rainbow-hued lightning flashes which blinded me to almost everything around me, I almost ran into someone up ahead who was walking in the same direction.

He was hunched over against the wind and rain and wearing a long heavy winter coat. Unusual for that time of year, I thought. Whenever I would run in public, I always made it a courtesy to let people know when I was approaching especially from behind. I’d blurt out a perfunctory:

“Excuse me.” Followed by a conciliatory:

“Sorry.”

But apparently, the person ahead either didn’t hear me or didn’t care because, when I was about 6 feet from him, he suddenly turned around, exposing a darkened contorted face, jagged teeth, and a guttural growl that would have stopped a charging 600-pound Grizzly.

The sheer force of the malevolence emitted from this inhuman thing almost made me stop, but because I was moving so fast, the inertia along with the gale force wind and lightning strikes propelled me past him (or it), and fingering my steel-reinforced baton, I, in turn, steeled my nerve and kept running. I looked back only once to reassure myself that he (or it) wasn’t following.

Running on the leeward side now, with the rain at my back, I ran past a group of men in a circle smoking or drinking or doing whatever noxious or illicit thing I imagined, when, feeling charged with my own adrenalin, or the anger and resentment at that woman’s searing pleas for help, or the spook I’d almost run into, or just the gross injustices thrust upon the world in that dank, dark and dangerous time, I almost stopped, baton in hand, intending to take on the whole group: I may go down, I told myself, but at least I would take one or two with me.

Just then, the lightning struck particularly close to where I and they stood and the sheer blinding flash and concussive boom shook all of us enough to break up their conspiratorial collaboration and my righteous crusade; just enough, that is, to shove me headlong around the next bend, to the long straight full out dash to the front doors, the 5 floors, 10 landings, and 50 risers to rain-sodden home.

To get to work every day, I'd have to commute to the upper peninsula by using 3 buses, 1 train, and 1 cab and after a 10 or 12 or sometimes 14-hour day, I would have to take the same to get back. This meant that if I didn’t go out, make dinner, eat, or watch tv, I just might get about 4 hours sleep. Commuting took between 2 to 3 hours, one way.

Once on the way home, almost every stop was crowded with commuters. I was told that it was because there were so many buses down for repair. The ones still running were so filled beyond capacity, that the shocks and springs were sitting on the chassis, and stop after stop proved nearly impossible to take on any more passengers. Still, and despite the few getting out at every stop, the driver would take on even more and just pack them in.

I remember him yelling for people to get back behind the yellow line over and over. By then, he was long past any semblance of reason; his patience frayed to a single maniacal thought, his voice raspier and raspier, his manner, more and more brusk.

I can still see when he finally lost it; jumping up, out of his seat, with a nickel-plated 38 Caliber Revolver pointing at one of the passengers; an elderly woman, screaming from the top of his lungs:

“Get back behind the yellow line!”

I can still hear the woman begging the driver:

“Please...” while the passengers behind were practically trampling each other to get out of the line of fire.
I remember the sad, exhausted urgency in her voice; she really was trying to move back, but how could she, an old woman, do that with all those people blocking her way? Everyone knew this was an impossible task; everyone except the maddened driver. He just kept glaring, and bellowing with his gun out pointed right at her and the other passengers.

"Back up and make room" he yelled.

‘Or else what?’ I thought. ‘You're gonna kill an old woman?'

Getting up out of my seat, pushing my way through the throng who were pushing against me to get away, I managed to get within about 6 feet from the front when, roaring through the din and my fear and anger, I ordered the bus driver to:

“Put the gun down!” And again, with even more rage and authority:
“Put the gun down, now!”

The bus driver shocked that it might be a cop, or worse, shakily, put his gun back in his concealed carry holster and hypnotically sat back down. He resumed driving without saying another word. I got out at the next stop, along with the elderly woman. She was so shaken, that she busted out crying. I held her still fuming despite the close call because I would now have to wait for another bus and after that, 2 more; the train and a cab to get home. I wasn’t going to make it until well after 8:00 pm. As soon as I got home, I reported the bus number and the driver to Muni.

Many of the commuters I'd see day to day, or share a seat with were victims of the purge just trying to get out of the rain or the cold, or the wind, or the sun, even for just a little while. For them, it was easing the agony of living on the street, even just a little. For many of us regular commuters, during those dark times, it proved to be the same.

On one of the final buses that would take me to the train and across the bay, I remember standing, with about 50 others, on Market Street waiting. Like ours, stop after stop was so packed with people, some were standing in the street because there was simply not enough room on the sidewalk. The ones in the street would stay where they were for fear of losing their place and missing their connection and having to wait another hour, or more, to catch another.

Because the rapidly descending elevation of the southbound streets ending at Market Street from the upper peninsula were so steep and the transverse angle of the turn so sharp, some of the buses would skirt the edge of the curb, sometimes rolling up over it onto the sidewalk putting them dangerously close to the commuters waiting on the other side.

If there were any people in the street, especially the old or the infirm, they would either have to get out of the way and lose their place in line or hope the bus driver stopped before completing the turn. Most of the drivers would. Once there was one who didn’t.

I remember the television and newspaper account about an elderly woman waiting at one of the stops during the pm rush hour. When the bus made the oblique turn way too fast at 25 miles per hour she was either too close to the edge or standing in the street when she was hit by the side view mirror across the face and the left side of her head.

She went down under the wheels and her body got hung up under the chassis. The bus driver too full of passengers to stop, or late for his break, or just too coked up to notice, kept on heading for the Embarcadero before he realized something was wrong. By then, the woman had been dragged over a quarter of a mile. No one knew for sure whether the concussion from the mirror or the relentless dragging was the cause of death. I guess it didn’t matter to her anymore, one way or the other. It mattered to a lot of those who witnessed the whole thing though; screaming and yelling, block after block, trying to get the bus driver to stop.

To get across the Bay to San Francisco from Oakland or back, one alternative to the nightmare bus commute was the B.A.R.T (Bay Area Rapid Transit). It was quiet, clean, air-conditioned, and fast. Traveling under the Bay, it could span the 13 miles in minutes. Once I’d reach the train station, by bus, from the Oakland side, I’d descend one of the many street-level entries to the below-ground turnstiles which led to the train platform. Of course, there were always hundreds of derelicts, homeless, hustlers, etc., hanging out by the turnstiles waiting for their chance to slip through and get on any one of the many trains that serviced the Bay Area, but sometimes, especially after a scuffle with B.A.R.T. Security or the San Francisco/Oakland Police, they’d scatter to the winds (or the shadows as it were) until everything calmed down and then they'd be back at it again, day and night.

Almost every week I'd hear about someone falling, or being pushed, or jumping down onto the third rail, which would either short-circuit the line and knock out the power or if it was particularly grisly, halt service entirely. Because service resumption could take hours, waiting passengers would have to go back up and out onto the street and catch another train, take a cab or a bus or just walk or, as was often the case for me, run.

Once, I remember running to the next stop when I was ascending to the upper peninsula because the previous connection didn’t show up which meant it would have added another 45 minutes to my commute. The choice was obvious and inevitable: I could either
“wait to be late” or go for it. I chose the latter.

You just can't imagine what it’s like to run at a 20-degree angle uphill for about 2 miles while wearing dress slacks, dress shoes, a white shirt and tie, and a sports jacket, in San Francisco, during the summer, with the humidity until you’ve tried it. It’s, how should I say: exhilaratingly infuriating.

Running, I came upon a stand-alone, transmission shop, right in the middle of a residential area. The owners must have paid a pretty penny to get away with that one. There were police cars, the fire department, a metro ambulance, the San Francisco Chronicle, and a marked County Coroner’s Office vehicle scattered around the shop.
Some people along with some of the employees: their first names embroidered on their shirts, were standing on the sidewalk just outside the property watching. They’d been there for about an hour when I stopped to ask one of them (Bob) what happened.

Wearily he said:

“The girl who worked in the office answering the phone and typing up orders was shot to death by her boyfriend. The boyfriend got away but she was still down there being processed. God, she was only 24 years old. They’ll catch him, though. He hasn’t got a chance.”

'Nope,' I thought.
'In this town, I don’t expect he would.'

I was late again when I got home. Vaulting the 5 floors to reach our loft, I held my friend close, the entire night. She was ok with that. So was I.=

Andy was 'crying' alt Anthony 'lying' in P5?)]; Raising Arizona - Cage's character steals a baby; alt MrC carries one, in a version where he arrives alt with Naido? with the picnic basket in place of Andy, basket alt with a baby]. {Sam Colby, "I can stop by tomorrow on my way in" seems to suggest he goes to her workplace every day; alt Sam Murray or Sam Murphy; 'ph' alt in Philly instead of NY?} [P6 "poor thing" (Miriam) alt the pig?; blends with Naido ("she's alive"; Diane emerges from Naido, Diane's large bracelets alt the size of her wrists; Fat Diane & Fat Cooper in P17?; Diane's apartment, similar architecture as the Fireman's place, she's alt Senorita Dido or Santino (Carrie alt)? P13 Walter "hey girl" to Norma, link to "hey pretty girl"; Norma not in the P6 scene where Miriam ('the pig?') is]
Bushnell linked to characters in Mulholland Dr. (also Wally Brown - 3?); Cowboy watches over \"pretty girl\" alt the pig? Farmer; link to Mr. Blodgett?
March 15-17th, repeating 3 day sequence? Night of 14th: man taken home, Dougie to the Jones house in P4. 15th his first day back to work (P5) at Lucky 7; brought home at night P6. The second work day (16th) while at work, Jane meets thugs at the park, picks him up in the evening in P7. Third day (17th), the Jones couple at the police station, then taken to Dr. Ben. Continues week. Or alt: on the night of P7 (second day, 16th), MrC speaks with Murphy (Irish) and blackmails his way out (of the loop?). Next day (17th; day of P9) - the mystery man (ReznoNIИ, 'nine inches' link to part nine? the day following their RH performance in P8) shows up to work, or the neighboring office (#8 - again link to NIИ), in black leather jacket, then vanishes (in the bathroom) etc? MrC - to the portal site in P17, sky vortex, on the 17th of March? Then scenes at the station - alt the same day of Cooper being seen by Dr. Ben? The clocked stopped just before 2:53 PM in P17. Blood pressure cuff on Dougie's arm, '25-35 cm' link to 2:53? The Arm also says 2:53 in P2 (Gerard and the Arm, alt Dr. Ben and Janey-E; "something's wrong" with his vitals alt the electricity in the red room?) [P10 Janey-E to Dr. Ben "as I told you Dr. Ben, it started last week" vs the P16 scene "I just heard what you've been telling me" - Bushnell & Dr. Ben alt versions of each other? Gerard also appears when Cooper wakes up]. So on the night of the 16th (P7), MrC 'flies the coop' and escapes a longer version (of the week?) and on the 17th he loops back to the 14th, the day before it starts {week, link to 'Mrs. Houseman'}. If the longer version continues: Dougie sees Dr. Ben on the 17th and sex with Janey-E that night; 18th in the morning Janey-E says she can't stop thinking about last night (P10), Cooper that night is sent to Santino's (P11). 19th he arrives to work with the Mitchums after partying all night and gifts are delivered to the Jones house (early P13), that night they watch Sonny Jim play on the gym set; 20th he arrives to work, Sinclair waiting and he tries to poison Dougie (P13) (man in urinal, link to the pig? "that bad huh?" alt "that'll do, pig"); later that night he electrocutes himself? (P15, a Chantal and Hutch scene before that, they also have a scene before the P13 scene with Sinclair, 20th); 21st the FBI hotel daytime scenes connect with the P16 2:53 scene (one part of Cooper already there from 3/17 (Dr. Ben), alt on 3/21 - 4 day collapse?); FBI in the hotel room, days/time frozen until P17? (from P14-P17, or 3/14-3/17). In total - one week, 15th-21st? {so Cooper's room: 315; alt a date of 3/15}
-Dougie's green jacket, linked to St. Patty's Day.
Dr. Ben scene discontinuity: one version/perspective, Dougie is touching the cuff, '25-35' visible, signifies it's 2:53, on 3/21?; the other version, he's not touching it - 3/17? 'U1880S' - link to Pennsylvania 6-5000? (which would be alt to Pennsylvania Polka, Groundhog Day, single day repeat), and thus in one version it's St. Patty's Day at Dr. Ben's? {Green rose in his jacket pocket alt to blue rose? Dr. Ben link to Ben Horne, has the 'green key.' P1 Jerry alt comes from the Parade; link to Freddie, green glove, he told the doctor the story; Hornes alt the 'MacLachlan Brothers' and 'Beverly Watts'? [P1 'mother' is alt Sarah? (McLachlan link; "sure is a mystery"); P17 call to Ben about Jerry, alt about 'mother' - in prison?); 'Beverly Watts' P1 meets Jerry alt Judy ("nice to meet you"), link to P15 to MrC "you already met Judy" he's alt 'Billy Watts'}. This discontinuity, link to P16 after Dougie wakes up in the hospital - two versions spliced, one where Janey-E touches Dougie's face and the other where she remains at a distance (alt - 'Janey-D?' Davenport in place of Evans? husband alt 'Bill Davenport?'). Alt to P16 going to the casino on 3/21 - they go 'directly' home on 3/17?

Days. A Day 1 to work (3/15); B Day 2 at work (3/16); C Day 3 (3/17); D Day 4 to work (3/18); E Day 5 (3/19); F Day 6 to work (3/20); G Day 7, hospital (3/21); H - I - J: alt, 'flies the coop,' direct loop to portal on 3/17, back to 3/14. K - L: MrC figures it out and creates a clone, sends back into loop (night of 3/15, integrates with previous version already there).
Schematic for days. Long week: A) 3/15 Day 1 (Dougie's first day to work); B) 3/16 Day 2 (Janey-E picks up Dougie after a long day); C) 3/17 Day 3 (Janey-E takes Dougie to Dr. Ben); D) 3/18 Day 4 (day after sex; Dougie to Santino's later at night); E) 3/19 Day 5 (Janey-E receives gym set and car; watches SJ play at night); F) 3/20 Day 6 (Anthony meets Dougie for coffee; Dougie electrocutes himself at night); G) 3/21 Day 7 (Dougie at the hospital). Short MrC loop - Cooper flies the coop: H - I - J (MrC from the night of P7 (3/16) on Day 2 to Day 3 on 3/17; takes direct route to the portal in P17; which takes him back to 3/14, before Day 1). Alt longer route, MrC: K - L (from 3/17 in P9, he goes to MT on 3/18 {SJ playing with the gym set at night before MrC arrives in MT - is the gym set equivalent to the Silverado truck that MrC gets? gift from the brothers alt?}, MrC goes to see Jeffries the night of 3/18, takes Richard to the rock on 3/18? which sends him (after being disassembled and made into a new Cooper?) to P6 on the night of Day 1, 3/15? (Cooper's arrival to Janey-E in P6 an alt version of P4 arrival) {link to P16, Janey-E takes SJ to the little boys room, links with Rhonda sneaking Dougie into the bathroom on 3/15; discontinuity with the white key chain; which could tie into a scene in P4, where there's a sharp cut/POV switch before Janey-E takes Cooper to the bathroom); this links the two versions of Dougie first arriving home, P4 vs P6; receptionist in red linked to the P6 version (character 'Red's big scene is in P6; link to earlier in the part "big day tomorrow;" Cooper alt Red? 'sparkles' on the case file documents link to Red's sparkle?)} [P6 version of Dougie arriving home (linked to P16 breakdown of Richard), an alt and non-linear version of sending himself back into the loop that he escaped from, integrating two versions). So the MrC alt route: instead of going to the portal P17 (and back into the 3-day cycle to 3/14), he uses Richard to clone himself, sends him to Day 1 night of 3/15 and integrates 'seamlessly' with previous Dougie (link to 'dream weaver'; Janey-E guiding Cooper to the bathroom alt to Rhonda in P5 (two versions spliced) - which might be associated with the mystery man version, where he uses the bathroom, vanishes, back to the Jones house in P4).
The cloned Cooper who is sent back into the loop by MrC (partially with Cooper's soul?), is equipped with something that makes him stay inside the 'long week?' Bypasses the 'Mr. Strawberry/blackmailing' scenario that leads to his escape (P7) - like he forgets or misses a meeting (link to Andy being stood up P7, just before the blackmail scene), and thus stays with Janey-E until 3/21? (doesn't get the Rolex alt vortex from the guard?) {P18 events - represent a different perspective of the prison escape scenario [direct + indirect loop (associated with 'Richard'), merged]? Cooper leaves the red room (alt prison) on the night of 3/16 {Mrs. Strawberry alt Diane? Cooper link to Joe McKluskey? Before crossing at 430 "are you sure you want to do this?" alt Joe Messing to Diane in MD "are you sure you want this?"}; 3/17 in daytime travels with Diane, sex at the motel at night (which corresponds to the same day he had sex with Janey-E); 3/18 picks up Carrie (the day he's sent to Santino's in P11), the night of 3/18 is the end of P18 (corresponds to P2, Darya killed, day before MrC is set to leave?); to 3/19 to MT? (a day later? so 3/18 and 3/19 versions of the MT scene; one where there's no elevator? he's alt Mr. Strawberry in the late version? in the 3/18 version he goes to Jeffries; alt no Jeffries in the 3/19 version and link to the 'imposter' caller in P2? 'yesterday' alt 'tomorrow'); gets coordinates 3/19, 3/20 alt goes into Twin Peaks (MrC driving on his own, merges with Cooper arriving in the Pilot; after he crosses the portal site; alt with 'Diane' as a tape recorder instead of P18 in person; MrC has a recorder in P2)? 'Lewis Fork' link; P15 Dougie puts the fork in the outlet alt on 3/20, then 3/21 daytime in hospital? So the entire S1/S2 is put into one day along this framework? 3/20, nickel link 5 + 315; MrC goes into the bathroom after killing Darya, blends with Hawk from P6, so he's in 320 or 3/20; used her as a placeholder for the entire S1/S2 story? follows that her sidekick Ray is S3?; Darya's body alt on the table in conference room (Frank/fish screensaver same picture in the motel room P2; alt autopsy room); P4 the Laura Palmer prom picture out, 'face of the franchise' (alt her face with Darya's body); link to P9 and Albert's 'season 2' comment, alt they are taken into the conference room to see Laura's body; 3/20 corresponds to Day 6, alt 'Darya 6' like a Motel 6; in room 6 at the Motor Lodge Motel; There are 30 episodes in S1 & S2, link to #30 on the Silverado truck, alt 'are you gonna crash me now?' [Therefore Ray is the P18 car? same as Gene's car P3? his partner with the sniper alt Darya, black car alt the Silverado? "See you at Mikey's" alt the Farm, Ray & Darya alt the two hitmen; Buella alt Lorraine?].
-so essentially: MrC/alt Gerard made an alt version of himself (using Richard, detour from the 3/17 portal loop), integrated into the story that was already underway, deceptively so we can't tell the difference, to stay with Janey-E; otherwise the 3 day loop repeats indefinitely (he escapes/splits but tricked to 3/17 portal, takes him to start of loop or day before), Or detour - makes alt version, integrates, avoids 3/17 portal (involving something to manipulate memory?; similar to Memento, at the end, Leonard stops at the tattoo parlor to continue his memory loop; alt keeps going? link to Richard at the intersection in P6, alt "Fuck Sammy Jankis"; electrical pole 6 34800 link to Penn 6-5000, Richard goes through where he would stop at the end of the 3-day cycle? alt trucker decides to keep going rather than stop at rest stop and use bathroom?). {Portal at 253 site - sends back 3 days? 3/17 to 3/14, or 3/18 to 3/15. So Cooper from the end of P18, alt perspective of the prison escape scenario, goes to P6, out front of the Jones house (on 3/15)? Carrie alt case file(s), with Cooper at the Jones door; alt in P18 Cooper turns around and goes back to Alice's door, link to two Chalfonts and Chet going back. {Alice's husband alt Frank, "what is this?" alt to Cooper "what year is this?" Janey-E P4 "what is this?" as well; P4 and P6 seamless blending, Owls in front of Jones house, "not what they seem."}
The night of the 20th - Dougie watches Sunset Blvd. Link to Mulholland Dr., Rita on the run. Time loop - Ruth leaves on the 21st (morning) but Rita opens the box on the 20th? (suitcases in Ruth's closet when Rita retrieves the key for the box, clue to this); 3/21 - the day Ruth leaves and Betty arrives? Also when the FBI are at the hotel, watch/calendar stopped; 321, Orlando area code. Betty alt arrives to Universal (alt to Paramount Studios; Disney World; Irene's companion: "All the luck in the world" alt they shared a cab with her; Gordon alt excited for Disney World unlike cranky Albert); link to Orlando Magic, in Wally's office - "voila!" (magic); "where the hell did you find her? it's a slam dunk" (321: a universal code? Betty's arrival alt to MrC, P17 to the station on 3/21?). [P10, "what a world" Rodney, alt sees Ike arrested at Disney World?]

Betty alt arrives to Disney World \"all the luck in the world.\" Corresponding to 3/21 (321 is Orlando's area code). Ruth leaves that morning and Rita loops so that she opens the box on 3/20.
-One week, link to Mrs. Houseman's one week stay? Alt 'Ruth Houseman' leaves the GN on the 21st? Arrived 3/15, link to room 315? Cooper vs Mrs. Houseman, two versions? (one is room# and one is the date?). Valerie and her Week of Wonders (Vogue, 1 week); after 21st - Cosmopolitan? (time stopped?) [alt 'compassion,' Albert E4 has it running out of his nose (like to 'dolts' comment, tying into P4 the back room all the 'd's and the drunk's nose mentioned); alt comes from a place with no time, P17 link to watch stopped]
-month of March link to Nadine (backstory: Laura is Feb; Bushnell is June (poster), Cooper takes over as July (alt Judy), Albert is August, P6 he goes to Diane September; Red is October, Richard is November; MrC is January (alt Judy imposter?); Nadine marches down the road, Al the driver is April, takes Dougie to alt Mary or Mary). Nadine link to Janey-E P10 ("he's so beautiful" "last night was so wonderful"), alt Nadine P4 comes out the old Hurley home, is angry at Dougie (alt Ed); hits with shovel instead of slap? (alt 'log splitter').
-Babe (1995); Bushnell alt Farmer Hoggett (link to Mr. Blodgett?); Dougie alt the pig, or blends with Phil (guiding him around)? director Chris Noonan alt Christopher Nolan. Pig alt the dreamer? (Inception link).
-Bonnici, link to Filippo Brunelleschi; built a dome alt Dougie (P18 Cooper is produced in a bubble or clear dome, sent to residential neighborhood, Simpson's link?); P17 Andy picnic basket pattern alt bricks, 'bricklayers'; link to "they want to build a study" alt statue or cathedral; Andy alt Art Vandelay (Frank alt the judge? judge P1 was 'up the mountain' link to Frank, fishing), MrC alt 'George'; ('Bonnici' is a Maltese name; link to Maltese Falcon, Bushnell visual with Murphy; statue).
-'good joe' link to Joe McKluskey? ('late' Mr. Strawberry as in late for a meeting); Becky P11 "he's good inside" about Steven (he's alt Joe M, P5? Mike alt Mr. Strawberry in that scene?); MrC in prison is alt 'bad Joe' seen by Diane? (suggesting a blend of Becky & Diane, and Gordon & Bobby); link to P1 "you're a bad girl, Tracey" elevatocoffee links; Hey Tracey in place of Joe or Jude.
- 3/20 in P15, link to the end of S2?; Cooper goes in to the bathroom to brush his teeth link to P6 when Cooper goes into the bathroom and the SJ says that he already brushed his teeth ('upstairs' is 5 days later? from night of 3/15 to 3/20; link to: "did you call me 5 days ago?" alt the call downstairs; then Richard in P15 alt 'son' SJ); alt a cake was brought home from Sonny Jim’s Bakery (alt Gentlemen Jim’s); Shelly S1 brings home a piece of pie for Leo; Cooper blends Leo into role (Memento links, etc). Blends with 3/20 scenario of Anthony trying to poison Dougie [sugar dispenser on the table P13 alt tip of alcohol bottle, Bobby in S1 with Jack Daniels bottle at Leo's alt bartender]. So Leo sitting alt sitting up at the table (alt in P2 motel room), companion to Darya (in bed, dreamer), dream vs memory losses, placeholders for worlds/seasons of the show?
-Dougie P3 with 315 'green' key, Jade finds and mails to Washington state; alt Freddie who discovered that he 'already had a ticket' to Twin Peaks, WA; alt 315 is a date for the next day (again supports Dougie arriving into loop on 3/14, P3); Jade alt works at airport or travel agency ('triple A' link; alt rent-a-car).
-P18, alt telling of 'fly the coop' scenario (direct & indirect combined into one story?); Cooper leaves red room into the version where he loops back from 3/14 to 3/17, but travels to the 'Richard' version (portal) where he is sent back to 3/15; end of P18 continues via early P6.
-MrC driving alone alt on 3/19 (P3), takes portal to Feb 24th, 1989 (2241989)? 319 to 419; '2289' surrounds. Link to 2240 Sycamore; 49 difference.
Part two: Room 323 vs Room 314; #49
End of P4, Albert: "I know where she drinks" about Diane then an abrupt cut to the neon Roadhouse sign; similar to the abrupt cut to the Elk's #9 Point neon sign in P14 after James walks toward the basement door. Alt P4 - cut to P14 Elk's instead of the Roadhouse, "she" is Sarah (10 shift, link to dime, Gordon & Albert, alt Red vs Richard) ['one certain person' link to 'certain Major Briggs', who says "blue rose"; this person alt 'Sarah Briggs?']. On the flip side, James in P14 walks towards the 315 door then a cut to the P4 RH sign and Au Revoir Simone performing Lark inside (on their second song?); the first song would be in P9 before that (icicles; cold room link, James; two songs link to two slices of pie in P11, trio of girls in pink alt the 3 synth players; champagne on ice). So James from P14, alt walks into a room with 3 players; 3 + 14 = 314, link to room 314. Tammy in P4 was told to wait inside the restaurant (prior to the 3 synth players performing {Tammy blue lips, alt frozen in 314?}, so is she linked to that room? (James & Freddie alt the two officers in P1 who go into Ruth's room, alt go into Tammy's room in 314). [P10, Tammy knocks on Gordon's door at the hotel; alt her room is across the hall and P4 Gordon alt tells her to go back to her room; she's alt 'woman across the hall' dining with Bobby vs Albert dining with Constance in P10; loud Richard RH scene prior to Tammy in P5, alt she comes to tell him to turn music down].
-Flip side of 314 (from alt James P14 going into room with Au Revoir Simone); from P4 the cut to Elk's Point #9 = 49. Or Sarah is 'Person 49?' (link to 'certain person'; Sarah Briggs?). P1 "show Mr. Hastings to his new room" - Bill, is 43 years old. Alt - 'show Mrs. Houseman to her new room'. 49 years old version? 49 link to room #47 (IE - Sarah/Grace Z. numerous links, rabbits on her TV stand; her scene in P13 is at 49th minute, link to 1349 and Ruth). [P4 alt: Jane McLaughlin, heavy drinker, in Sarah's place, goes into her bar, meets 'Kyle Watts' alt the trucker, link to P14 Jimmy (James) wants to hear the story, continuous from P4 when Janey-E goes upstairs to Sonny Jim, alt reads to him]
-49 + 2240 (address of the place that Hastings takes the FBI to in P11) = 2289. This might be linked to a transition of MrC driving (P3), under the portal (link to P18, similar stretch of highway that Cooper & Diane travel on) to Feb 1989, morphs into Cooper driving into TP in the Pilot Episode. 2289 a 'buffer zone'?
-"it could make a difference" Lucy to the insurance man P1, link to "once we cross it could all be different." 3 POVs of the Lucy scene link to 3 versions of Diane & Cooper kissing, based on subtle discontinuities in P18. Sarah ('49') link to Lucy at the front desk? (Sarah alt Bev, P7 gets angry at Tom, dinner link to P14 Sarah "I'll eat you"), alt this Sarah went back to work (from a version of the old story where Sarah was a dispatcher? calling around asking about her own daughter in Pilot alt). 'Buffer zone' alt 'auto zone'; parallels station vs Arnie's in Lost Highway (alt MrC stops in with truck and leaves with Towncar; 'Andie's' alt to 'Trader Jack's' where he trades in Mercedes).
S2E21 (Miss Twin Peaks), Annie goes to Cooper's room for help about her speech and they end up getting it on. When he lets her in, the door across the hall is seen as room 323. Earlier in S2 it was seen as room 314. P17 Cooper returns to Twin Peaks, gets the 315 room key from Frank, then Diane appears from Naido, and they kiss amorously. If Cooper is a continuation from S2 it follows that this should be Annie. Alt - there's a different version of the love making scene with Diane (and with room 314 across the hall). Also, in the Annie version Cooper should be in room 324 (across from 323) (although 315 is visible when Annie enters). {Annie Hall link; Diane Keaton, who is of course TP-associated}
Room 323 (Annie version) vs 314 (Diane version?) across the hall from Cooper's room.
So Cooper might alt be in 324. If Cooper was in 325 (315 + 10; dime, Richard link; P18 Cooper wakes up as 'Richard'): 325 adds up to 10 ('level of completion'); link to 2:53, time in P16 at the hospital; so let's say there's another version of the love making scenario with Janey-E in place of Annie (Watts sort of looks like the 'new girl' in S1 with Ben, alt call girl sent to room 325?). 3 possible girls - link to the scenario where 2 sets of coordinates match? Audrey & Janey-E versions (in room 325) vs Diane ('314') version? (which merges in P17 with the Annie '324' version?). [S1 Cooper comes into this room, Audrey in is bed naked, "don't make me leave" link to "make me" Richard P5; Cooper in 315 vs 325 - discontinuity, alt turns head to the left, version where he sleeps with Audrey, link to Bill P1 "to the left here Bill" (alt to MrC going to the right and upstairs; Jeffries says "oh, it's you"; Bill is alt 'Tom Banks?' food critic [link to Teresa Banks/MT Wentz connection, alt Cooper on the floor]; alt Tom Hanks or Twin Peaks, alt with Jenny, alt Judy), picked up alt for sleeping with underaged girl?); Cooper's pinky ring signifies the extra 10? Garland link; alt gold/silver bead or dime inside him]. Cooper in 324: the person across the hall in room 314 swallowed dime or has a ring? Tammy? Alt - Tammy & Annie have an affair and love making scene (like Rita and Betty, brunette & blonde; a Tammy with purely black hair).
-so: Cooper in 325, sex with Audrey, equivalent to Janey-E (adds to 10; both 'matching' scenarios destroyed, early P16?). Cooper in 315 with Diane ('314' version). Cooper in 324 is an alt-Tammy, hall side reversal, paired with Annie (Tammy's presence P17 linked). Scenario where Tammy goes to a place to save Annie? P7 Annie Blackburn "a girl that went into that place" "he owns this place." MrC looking for "the place." MrC alt Tammy, looking for where Annie is? Place alt 'Palmer House?' (MrC's original destination before the Fireman shifted it). Betty & Rita played detectives in MD, they snuck into Diane's apartment; alt a scenario where Betty went alone (like Anthony P10), snuck into the Palmer house, was found and held captive? ('Annie in chains' alt Alice). In the attic or basement? Link to GN, room in the basement, James hears noise (he's alt a repairman, checking furnaces). Gets put into the room too? (with Candie alt Annie; 'cold' room version?) (link to Lucy P4; has been there all through the years, thermostat). James + Candie; JC, John Candy (alt Judy), behind the door P17 in place of Gerard? (alt Jacoby); Uncle Buck, link to Burt, Memento; alt man with symbol on his jacket in P13; psychiatrist who helps MrC remember? Link to Memento, Leonard ('remember' alt to dismember); P17 events, Diane remembers, then sudden black out, link to the black symbol? Blackout represents that someone is forgetting? [Leonard, Memento, can't form new memories; link to Dr. Craig, alt neuroscientist studying Leo's brain; Frank gets a 'memento' earlier]. [P5, MrC cuffed to the desk in Yankton (link to Denny Craig; 'Tammy Craig?'), alt Chad P17 cuffed to the cell, makes a call link to the blackout upstairs?] {P2, MrC kills Darya, goes to the bathroom, towel ring but no towel; link to P6, Ike murders Lorraine, then Richard cleans off the front of the truck, throws a towel in the field, then Hawk washing his hands (link to S2, Hawk found the bloody towel at Glastonbury Grove); Hawk alt MrC, in the stall, turns and freezes, alt forgets where he is/what he's doing, link to Memento (Leonard) (Nez Perce link to Guy Pearce, alt Glastonbury; Hawk alt 'Leo Shelly,' long gray hair link to Phyllis P1, wife alt blends with husband? MrC P2 alt 'Shelly Cooper'); MrC P2 pauses/confused after getting a call from the mystery caller, alt he forgets afterwards? Link to John G. manipulating Leonard in Memento; 'you're still in Buckhorn' alt Butte; P5 a towel in MrC's prison cell, "food is coming" alt "shit he's coming, I gotta get off the phone." Hungry Horse vs Butte versions? one version of Leo can't form new memories, other can't remember his past? One is alt the farmer, who forgets about the meeting?}
-key to what this is all about, P12 Frank gets a literal key, a 'memento.' Alt - Ray sees it in 'Leonard Cooper?' alt Miriam seeing Richard P6, the key that makes him forget alt remembering something; and break out of loop? Drives past the stop sign; reverse of key, link to elk? Sarah/Grace, she talks about "forgetfulness" in IE.
-Diane's place P7, overhead light fixtures like seen in the hallway, 314 door at the GN. Fella leaving P7, alt 'Frank Truman' (Fireman?). or Fred Truman, linking with Freddie who visited the Fireman (and link to events in Frank's office, defeating BOB link to P8 Fireman sees him) (the 'pig' or 'pretty girl' link to Miriam & Dido? She's in apartment 17, link to part 17, Frank with the cowboy hat alt the cowboy; alt Harry in the barn, owned by alt Bushnell?).
TAMMY in room 314: 314 adds up to 8; link to Jeffries in room 8 at the convenience store motel. Alt it's Tammy's room, she's on the phone with him? Scenario where the FBI are on to her (P10 "keep her close") in place of Diane with MrC; alt the airport P4, the restaurant is the room across the hall; Gordon & Albert alt Red & Richard, dime scene; Red with the dime; red-room link [he's alt Gerard with the seed, something to do with a shift of '10']) ('Tammy Watson?'; P4 Dougie is delivered to Watts on 3/14; from 30 jackpots to 31 + P4 = 314). Room 8, "who is Judy?" "you already met Judy"; link to Bev P1 "nice to meet you" to Jerry; 'Tammy Paige' (alt to Watson)? linked to P18 the return of Dougie (and Carrie, 'did you find him')? her son was missing? Little Jerry? (Big Jerry was missing and eventually found) [so Tammy Paige is missing her son, Tammy Watson across the hall in 314]. [324: Tammy Elms with Annie Rhodes? 'Annie Rhodes' held captive in the basement of the Palmer house; anagram: Rhonda niees alt 'niece'; Rhonda sweaty palms (P7) like Audrey, Jerry's niece; alt 'Audrie Rhodes.' 2023.01.09 19:56 JenGosling I Hate Bathrooms.

On average, the scariest room in any given building is the bathroom.
You can keep your basements, your attics, your cobwebby secret rooms hidden in the walls – every building, commercial or residential, has a bathroom, and you can’t avoid it. You’re going to have to pee eventually.
A bathroom is made of hard, slippery surfaces and sharp edges and glass and bits of hardware sticking out of the walls. Ever slipped and fallen while taking a shower? I have. Nearly brained myself on the toilet. Bought a set of white sandpapery flowers to stick on the bottom the next day.
Many of the surfaces are shiny, reflective, and sometimes fragile. Mirrors are creepy, sure, but have you ever watch your distorted reflection in the doorknob or faucet? Did you see the colors of your flesh, your clothing, your hair swim around in the stainless steel like oil floating in pasta water? Ever see your eyes looking back at you, pushed out of your face by the curve of the chrome?
These hard surfaces change the sound of things. The very sound of your own voice can resonate in a bathroom, echo off the walls, making you sound bigger than you are, big and hollow. Its hard to feel like you’re alone in a bathroom when your own voice doesn’t sound like it belongs to you.
The bathroom is full of chemicals - cosmetics, skin care, medications, soaps, deodorizers, cleansers of varying strengths for cleaning the actual room itself. Why are there cleansers in there? Because a bathroom is also full of germs, waste, and disease. This is the room where we evacuate our waste, our unwanted bodily fluids – saliva, vomit, feces, urine, pus, blood – and we wipe and wash it off and send it down the drains.
The drains. The bathroom is connected to a network of pipes that runs under your neighborhood. Some bring in clean water, the rest take away our dishwater, gutter water, waste water. We trust that they aren’t connected. The pipes come all the way from sources in the wild and connect to our homes, other people's homes, offices, factories, laboratories, treatment plants, cemetery sprinkler systems, sewers, morgues…
We like our water to come in clean, at our chosen temperature. As long as it comes out clear, we don’t question it, but there can be so much of it in a bathroom. People slip and fall on wet floors. IS that actually water on the floor, or is it some other fluid? Children drown in tubs. People get scalded by water that comes out too hot. And there are electrical outlets right next to the sink, where we plug in things that buzz and blow and burn.
“What about outhouses?” you ask. “Those don’t have water or pipes.” No they don’t. You have to leave the safety of your home to use an outhouse. Fine, during the day, in good weather. But it could be raining or snowing or storming. You could get caught in there in a tornado – goodbye to you. You might need to pee in the middle of the night, and have to creep through the yard in the dark, dressed in your pajamas (if you even wear any). And then, once you get there, you put your naked butt over a dark, gaping hole full of piss and shit and used tampons and possible dead animals (or possibly live animals?) or anything else the hidden corners of your lizard-brain invents when you’re half-asleep and it’s trying to save your life.
Yeah, you have to get naked in a bathroom. You get naked and vulnerable in a room full of hard slippery surfaces and breakable reflective surfaces and water and electricity and echoes and sometimes really sketchy lighting that flickers or is too bright or forms odd shadows behind the toilets.
You are naked, and you are alone. The bathroom is isolated, both physically and socially. It’s not on the way to anywhere. Nobody goes in unless they need to use it or clean it. And we don’t talk about it: potty talk is not polite. It’s not a part of the stories we tell in public. It’s a private area where we lock the door and do private things.
You are naked, and you are alone – or you aren’t. A public bathroom has strangers in it, other people you’ve never met also coming into the strangely-lit echoing room to get naked and do private business. Or maybe not. Maybe they are in there for you. Maybe they are just hanging out in that stall, waiting for you to let down your guard, to turn your back to the rest of the room and wash your hands (because you’re a good person, of course YOU wash your hands), and are you paying attention to what is going on behind you, reflected in the mirror? Or are you trying to get the motion-sensor faucet to work so you can rinse the industrial soap off your hands?
The scariest room in any given building IS the bathroom.
I was seventeen when I started to hate bathrooms. We went on a family trip to visit my mom’s cousins in Newfoundland. (That’s pronounced noo-fin-LAND, underSTAND rubberBAND?) The whole trip was amazing, I mean, that place is BEAUTIFUL, especially in the late summer: all colorful little fishing villages and rocky beaches and lighthouses. It was like vacationing in one of those jigsaw puzzles your aunt likes to put together.
Behind my great-uncle’s house was a little wood, all spindly old trees that diffused the sunlight into a dappled green haze over the mossy ground. Tiny, and I mean TINY, little flowers were everywhere in the grasses. Yeah, I was seventeen, but I always had an active imagination and it wasn’t hard to believe there were fairies living there. If you follow the path through the woods, it continues through shrubby fields of wild blueberries (we picked BUCKETS, and grocery store berries will never be the same) to an honest-to-goodness swimming hole in a stony little creek.
I wish this story was about a fairy-infested woods in a foreign country very far from where I live.
Instead, it’s about the bathroom in the basement of my mom’s cousin’s house, where we were staying.
Most of the house was charming. My favorite part was the breakfast nook just off the kitchen. It was like a little greenhouse, walls and ceiling all made of glass, and there was a record player and a collection of Beatles albums (which I was ridiculously into at the time. Greenday who?). The food was amazing: brook trout with blueberry muffins, moose sausage, pickled mussels, fish and brewis, actual literal peas porridge in a pot (not 9 days old, though).
The basement was furnished with comfy couches, and it was full of movies to watch and musical instruments we weren’t supposed to touch. The walls were wood paneling, and sunlight came in diagonally through the glass in the sunken back door. I was given one of the bedrooms down there for the stay: a little double bed, more wood paneling, and a built-in desk next to the closet. No window. I thought it was cozy, a warm little cave to retreat to when I’d had my fill of sunshine and blueberries.
Nothing happened on the first night. I can’t think why anything should have happened at all, of course. I had no reason to expect anything other than a nice stay with some distant family in a beautiful new place. But then, we’d just arrived. We hadn’t been anywhere except the airport and in the car since our arrival in Newfoundland.
The next day we explored the woods and the swimming hole, of course, and I was in love with everything. I spent most of my childhood in West L.A. and had always romanticized things I’d only seen on TV or read about in books, like swimming holes and eating berries right off bushes and little wooded areas that weren’t fenced off or kept tidy by a parks department.
The second night, after a supper of salmon and potatoes and blueberry duff with caramel sauce, I went to bed in my little cave room, happily reliving the storybook day I’d had. I tucked myself in, turned off the bedside lamp, and fell asleep fairly quickly.
I’m an introvert, and sometimes my bad dreams follow that theme: I’m surrounded by people and can’t get away for a quiet moment to myself. The setting of this dream, appropriately, was a family reunion of some kind, where there were lots of people and we were all staying in one cousin’s home. Sound familiar? In the dream, of course, it was a different home and different people, but it felt like a Familiar Place and people I knew.
In the dream, I had to get changed – I have no recollection of the reason or the details of what I was already wearing, but getting changed from pajamas into day clothes fits the situation. I gathered my day clothes and went into a bathroom to get changed.
I want to make it clear that my dream-self interpreted this bathroom as Normal, at least while I was dreaming, but you’ll see when I describe it that things that are Normal in dreams are sometimes the weirdest things to the waking mind.
The bathroom had a fairly standard layout. As I entered, the bathtub complete with shower curtain was on my left, then at the end of that was the toilet, which faced my right. The sink and mirror were at the end, facing the door. The floor had no little rugs or mats, but was covered in about an inch or so of some yellow chemical liquid (my dream-self just somehow knew it wasn’t urine) but it didn’t bother me because my feet stepped right through it like it was a hologram. Hanging all over the room – from the towel racks, the shower curtain rod, the light fixtures, nailed to the wall – were pieces of dead iguanas, tied up neatly with red thread.
Dream brain said this was all Normal, so, unbothered, I locked the door and stepped over to the counter to set down my pile of clothes, ready to begin changing.
Suddenly, there was a noise from behind me: the soft plasticky rustle and sliding shinkshinkshink of a shower curtain being pulled back. I looked up into the mirror, horrified that I’d intruded on somebody’s shower time (they really should have locked the door though!), and saw someone in a shower cap peeking out at me.
They had no face.
I spun around to apologize and leave, but there was nobody there. I was TERRIFIED. Yellow floor liquid? Iguana bits? No face? Fine, normal, all good. Person in mirror but not in the room? EEK. I ran from the bathroom straight into waking up.
So here’s the part where the chilling mixes with the hilarious for a bit: I woke up in a strange pitch-dark bedroom, from a nightmare about a BATHROOM, every nerve on edge and my bloodstream full of adrenaline – and I had to PEE.
BADLY.
Go ahead and laugh. It was not funny at the time.
I couldn’t even MOVE yet, and my bladder was screaming at me. Some remnant of logic broke through the panic and told me that it was JUST a dream, and I should probably do what I could to avoid wetting my mom’s cousin’s guest bed, but my panicked lizard-brain was convinced that the covers were keeping me safe from the mutilating horrors that surely awaited me in the darkness. I HAD to get a light on, or I’d never safely get out of the bed.
The bedside lamp was closest. Slowly, carefully, I slid my right hand under the covers towards the edge of the bed and my only chance of survival. I steeled myself, then quickly darted my hand out, turned on the lamp, then pulled my hand back under the covers to safety as the little yellow bulb chased the shadows into the corners of the room.
So far so good.
My next task was to turn on the overhead light, which was much brighter, and make the room completely safe. I coiled my muscles, focused on my target, then quickly sat up and reached for the lightswitch on the wall. Success! The light flooded on, and while I dove back under the covers just in case, the light chased the rest of the shadows away.
With the room safe, I could now strategize how to get to the bathroom – the LAST PLACE ON EARTH I WANTED TO GO – safely.
I remembered the switch for the hall light was just outside my bedroom door, so I stood by the door, one hand on the knob, the other ready to zip through the crack and turn on the light out there. 1, 2, 3, OPEN! SWITCH! RETREAT! SLAM!
I was still safe, the shadows in the hall were retreating, and I somehow didn’t wake anybody up.
I peeked out of the door. The hallway was deserted. I slid out of the room and plastered my back to the wall. They can’t sneak up on you if your back is to the wall. I inched down the hall, starting to laugh a little (a VERY little) at how cartoony I must have looked. Parts of the hall opened up into the main room in the basement, but it was getting easier to ignore the shadows. That room wasn’t the scary one, after all. The scary room was the one I was heading towards: the bathroom.
This bathroom was smaller than the one in my dream. The little boxy shower with a floral curtain that faced the door was next to the toilet, which faced the sink and mirror. A fuzzy mint green mat and more wood paneling clashed a bit with the black tile on the floor. On the toilet tank, a frizzy-haired little doll, one plastic arm raised in greeting, concealed a fresh toilet paper roll beneath her frilly crocheted skirts. The counter was bare except for a glass dish that cradled several decoratively molded soaps, so dusty it was hard to tell one pastel shade from the next.
Not that I looked closely. I had my eyes on that green mat and the black tiles. I turned on the light, waited another bladder-torturing moment, then entered the bathroom. I did not look at the shower. I did not look at the toilet paper doll. I looked nowhere NEAR the mirror. I kept my eyes on the lights reflected in the shiny black tiles like so many stars and did my business – the RELIEF!! – as quickly as I could. I stood, flushed, then blindly washed my hands. I felt the mirror and the shower curtain, as if they were watching me, daring me to look, just a glance, just once.
Nope.
I slipped back into the hall, turning off the bathroom light just before closing the door.
With my poor bladder finally empty, and my adrenaline finally fading, I inched back down the hallway, now definitely laughing at myself at how cartoony I looked.
It really had only been a dream. My bladder was empty, the bed was still dry, and I had a ridiculous story to tell my siblings in the morning.
Just as I reached for the bedroom doorknob, from down the hall, behind the closed bathroom door, I heard a soft, plasticky rustle and the sliding shinkshinkshink of a shower curtain being pulled back.

I made this regional map of the city of Pace (pronounced "pah-chay"). It's defintely the most substantial map I've ever made, and I'm super proud of it. Feel free to clone this map and use it for your world! Below is a description of the city that you are welcome to use. I tried to keep the details and lore generalized so it can easily be adapted for your own world. At the very end are the technical notes about the map if you want to clone it for yourself. Be warned: this is a hefty map and very resource-intensive on your computer. Read the specs of the map at the end of this description before cloning.

City Lore
Welcome to the city of Pace (pronounced "pah-chay"), seen here just after harvest during peak Autumn foliage. The city sits at the confluence of two rivers, acting as a through point for those traveling along the rivers.
The Winding District, named so due to its haphazard layout, is the oldest part of the city. Buildings were added on as needed, so there was very little planning. As such, there are residential and commercial buildings intermixed with each other. The streets ebb and flow into each other, with forks at every corner. City officials have given up trying to name the streets and instead simply rely on landmarks to navigate the Winding District. While its layout is certainly confusing for newcomers, its old-world, rustic charm is endearing and worth traversing.
Huntington Rows was the next addition to the city about 25 years after its founding. It was named after the city's first mayor, Elisar Huntington. This district was designed with somewhat more intent. The streets are easily navigated and the buildings are much more densely packed. There are a few stores and markets, but Huntingtown Rows is mostly residential homes.
The Estates were built around the same time as Huntington Rows, and is mostly a wealthy district. In the middle of the district are luxury apartments and penthouses, surrounded by large houses and mansions. The shops in The Estates are certainly high-end, catering to their ritzy clientele. Most of the people who live here are government officials or people who come from old money.
Riverside was built throughout the city's history (and is still being built up as needed). Riverside is where the Consort Warf is located for shipping needs in and out of the city, both for travel and goods. This part of the city is designed with travelers in mind. As such, most of the buildings here are commercial buildings; inns, taverns, and restaurants; and warehouses. The few residential homes here are occupied mostly by people who work the docks or the farms south of the city.
The Timber Parkland is a lovely, naturesque park that contours the south end of the city, connecting Riverside to the city proper.
The Open Farm Claim is a large farmland that extends south of the city. The West and East Villages are tiny, single-street villages that house the workers of the farms. Though, there are also a few general stores, market stalls, and inns for travelers coming in from the south on foot. The Open Farm Claim, including the villages, are within the borders of Pace, and its residents are considered citizens of Pace. But because they are so separated from the main city, many view them more as suburbs.
The Emissarian Prairie begins just outside the borders of Pace on the northeast side of the city. It is a beautiful open range of rolling hills that extends for miles beyond this map.
Notable Landmarks
The landmarks in this map are specific to the lore in my own homebrew for a D&D campaign I am running. Below are some general ideas and prompts for adapting them for your own homebrew.
The Choy Estate: An old abandoned mansion in the middle of Timber Parkland. Who lived here? Why is it abandoned? Maybe the former resident was an eccentric mage who cast an experimental spell, scorching the land around. Maybe an enemy of the former resident set an alchemical fire and the land has yet to recover. What kind of rumors or ghost stories do the local teenagers share about the estate?
The Myrinn Den: A fortified building built on a rocky island at the confluence. What is this building's purpose? The obvious choice would be a prison. But instead, perhaps this is where a very paranoid, very wealthy individual lives. Maybe this is where the town guards headquarters is located. Maybe it was an ancient castle that has since be repurposed for a more modern use.
The Turrell Lodge: A massive building in the middle of the Winding District. Perhaps this is a large hotel with dozens of rooms. If so, why does such a city need a hotel to house this many people? What kind of tourist attractions are there in Pace? Perhaps the Turrell Lodge is simply the mansion of a wealthy aristocrat.
The Cyllene Fort: Another large building, this time in Huntington Rows. The building is enclosed by a wall. Within the walls appears to be an exotic garden and a mausoleum. Perhaps this building acts a city morgue. If so, what kind of tragedy happens in this city to warrant such a large morgue? Perhaps this is a wealthy family that has been apart of the city for centuries, and the mausoleum is where their ancestors are interred.
The Squacoo Atropolis: A building, or series of buildings, in the middle of Timber Parkland. Perhaps this is an animal sanctuary for abandoned, endangered, or exotic animals. Maybe this is the headquarters of the park rangers who manage the Timber Parkland.
Map Specs and Important Info
This map is very hefty and resource intensive. There are over 34,000 stamps (including the grouped ones). I highly recommend opening this map at 1k resolution and work your way up. Here is some useful info to know about this map:
Because of the scale of this map and the small size of the stamps I used, this map is best downloaded at 8k to be able to use it functionally as a city map in a game. Any smaller (even 4K) will only be useful if zoomed out; attempting to get any details will be too blurry. Unfortunately, that means it will be a very large file size, likely too big for places like Roll20. You may need to use the "New Map from Region" tool and split the map into several smaller sections. Perhaps you can make each city district its own map.
Many of the stamps used are smaller than the minimum size of 10. This can make it tricky to add more of that stamp, or adjust it in any way. If you weren't aware, you can make a stamp smaller than is technically allowed by selecting the stamp and manually dragging the resize handles down. You can make the stamp significantly smaller this way, but it can make it awkward to work it.
Because of the previous two points, and with Inkarnate's limitation of only 4k editing, this map can be difficult to edit, especially if you are working on an older computelaptop. If you plan on making significant changes to this map, I recommend exporting the map at 8k every so often to view details you would otherwise not see while editing. When working such small scales like this, I've found several mistakes in the final 8k export that were basically impossible to see while editing at 4k.
The cliffs along the river are accented by adding mountains underneath the cliff stamps to make it look more like a rocky riverside. To do this, I had to flatten all of the mountains to the background (the cliff and wave stamps are not flattened; only the mountains). Keep this in mind if you want to adjust the shape of the riveland.
Similarly, the Myrinn Den island includes several flattened stamps: the bridge leading to the Myrinn Den is flattened to the foreground. The building itself is flattened to the foreground. The foundational rocks are flattened to the background. The rocks and waves surrounding the Myrinn Den are not flattened.
For the water, I used the "Water Wave" texture from the Fantasy Battlemap set on top of a normal water texture from the Fantasy Regional set. In other words, there are two textures used. Keep this in mind if you want to change the water texture.
Note the filters I have on. They aren't necessary, but I felt they added to the Autumn tone I was looking for. You can create other aesthetics by changing the filters around.

Intro

Katu Veo, wastelanders! Today we will start talking about the Capital Wasteland, the territory of the pre-war city of Washington and its surroundings, presented to us in Fallout 3. The game plays a crucial role for the series, being the first long-awaited labored release after the bankruptcy of Interplay, the purchase of the series by Bethesda and several games that failed or were not released at all. The success or failure of Fallout 3 determined the fate of the series. And Bethesda didn't let us down..

Capital Wasteland - geography

The Capital Wasteland, as already mentioned, is the territory of the city of Washington and its surroundings. The wasteland occupies partial territories of three states – Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. The wasteland extends beyond the playing area itself and extends south to the Calvert and St. Mary Peninsulas. The border of the Capital and Appalachian wastelands will pass through the Raven Rock Mountains. Two main rivers pass through the wasteland – the Potomac and the Anacostia.
The wasteland can be conditionally divided into several subregions:
Northern Wastes –the northern bank of the Potomac, the territory of the state of Maryland,
Southern Wastes – the south bank of the Potomac, the territory of the state of Virginia,
St. Mary and Calvert – the territories of the peninsulas of the same name
Point Lookout is a swampy national park at the southernmost point of the St. Mary's Peninsula overlooking the Chesapeake Bay.

The Great War

We traditionally begin the analysis of the history of the wasteland with an inspection of vaults and shelters.

Vaults

There were six Vault Tec vaults in the region.
Vault 87. The FEV virus-testing center. The subjects were, of course, residents of the vault.
Vault 92. The vault was supposed to be sealed for 100 years, and 245 outstanding musicians of the nation were gathered in it. The experiment at the vault was appropriate – testing the effect of white noise.
Vault 101 near the pre-war town of Springvale, the experiment of the vault was the dictatorship of the overseer and complete isolation. According to the idea, it should never have opened and lasted as long as it could. Therefore, it was provided with everything necessary for a long autonomous existence.
Vault 106. In the vault, which was supposed to function for only 12 years and 3 months, the effect of psychotropic substances added to food, water and ventilation was investigated. In total, 95 subjects and 12 scientists were settled in the vault.
Vault 108. The capacity of the vault was 475 people, and it was supposed to be locked up for 38 years. The essence of the experiment is the absence of any prior appointment for employees and residents. All positions in the vault had to be personally determined by the first overseer, who at the same time has cancer and will have to die in 3 years. In addition to this, the main generator was supposed to stall after 20 years, and the backup generator was supposed to provide only half of the vault with energy. Plus, there were three times as many weapons in the vault and there was no entertainment. In addition, experiments on cloning people were carried out.
Vault 112. Two years before the War, in 2075, 85 residents of the vault were placed in hibernation capsules and loaded into the virtual reality world, which was controlled by the overseer and creator of the GECK, Stanislaus Braun.

Shelters

Not everyone was lucky enough to get a place in a vault. Most of the people have to hide from the explosions wherever they have to:
Four families have taken refuge in the basements of the city of Annandale.
A refugee assistance center was organized in the Germantown Police Department. The camp is managed by the National Catastrophe Relief Auxiliary (NCRA).
(Fallout 76) Somewhere in the region, Colonel Ellen Santiago's squad survives the Great War.
The Naval Research Institute also survives. It is a pre-war research institute, engaged, as the name implies, in marine civil and military technologies and research.
Office employees are waiting out the War in Dunwich building.
There was a Mama Dolce restaurant in Arlington, which, like its counterpart in Appalachia, was a cover for the guerrillas of the Chinese People’s Army. According to indirect signs, the Chinese are also holed up in the Taft Tunnel connecting the Jefferson Memorial and the Pentagon.
The Hamilton family, having not received a place in a vault, made their own in the caves of Virginia (Hamilton Hideaway).
At the risk of being court-martialed, one of the Keller family members, a military man, sent parts of the code to his family members so that they, together, united and ending intra-family conflicts, evacuated to the National Guard Bunker. Unfortunately, the Kellers hated each other so much that some gave up their parts of the code and preferred to die outside rather than evacuate with their family.
Eighty-two schoolchildren and several teachers were on an excursion to the Lamplight Cavern. There they met the War, when the stonewalls began to shake.
There were mini bunkers in the wasteland under the guise of sewage. Therefore, the Anderstein family took refuge in the Oscar Zulu bunker and some other refugees in the Sierra Victor and Yankee Bravo bunkers. One of these bunkers, Sierra Romero, was used by Chinese spies.
There was a Turtledove Detention Camp in Point Lookout for Chinese spies and honest immigrants suspected of having ties and assistance to the Chinese Communist Party. Before the war, some of the prisoners tried to escape through a sewer tunnel from the morgue.
Also in the swampy region there was a medical underground research institute complex St. Aubin, which was engaged in the research of technologies for extracting brains from human bodies for use in robobrains and brain banks, the creation of biomedical gel and other research related to brains, and which can be used for military purposes. The complex was located under the Lookout Lighthouse. Considering that, the staff of the center argued about the years that the laboratory could withstand after the war, most likely the center was active during the war.

Some kind of super toxic bomb fell right in front of Vault 87, damaging the geardoor. The level of radiation pollution was unthinkable - 4000 rad/sec. The vault has forever lost the opportunity to come to the surface.
In Vault 101, the overseer, according to the directives of Vault Tec, informs everyone that there is nothing behind the doors except the scorched radioactive earth, and that they are almost the last survivors on the planet. As evidence, he puts on the air several fake radio broadcasts that convince the vaulters that it is not worth even trying to leave their new abode.
There were several military posts on the roads in the region, but they all died during the war. These were the Reclining Grove Checkpoint, the Vault Billboard Checkpoint, the Enlist Billboard Checkpoint, and the Smith Casey Checkpoint.
November 2. Psychotropic gas begins to be sprayed in Vault 106.
At the end of November, the last adult in the Lamplight Caverns went on a scout mission and did not return.
In December, children in Lamplight found a secret entrance to Vault 87 in the depths of the caves and began to ask for help. The tech worker on the other side told them to leave, thinking that the children were hallucinations of his dead son. The children got angry on the adults and decided that from now on, no adult should be in their settlement, and therefore, when one of them reaches the age of 18, he should be kicked out.
People who survived in the wasteland are flooding to Germantown to the refugee aid center. There were too many people, and the Catastrophe Relief Auxiliary stopped coping with the load. NCRA began to lose control, looting started, supplies and medicines began to run out, the number of deaths increased, and even the National Guard that came to aid the suppression could not cope with the crowd. As a result, desertions began even in NCRA, and eventually they dispersed, and the camp fell.
In addition to Germantown, people began to flock to the Museum of History, because it was not badly damaged.
The Dunwich office survivors were ghoulified. In the basement, ghouls find a Lovecraft monolith and possessed they become followers of the cult of Ug-Qualtoth.

After 2077

Professor Calvert, a member of the most influential family that controlled politics in the Point Lookout region and funded research at St. Aubin, became a brain in the jar and developed telepathic abilities. He wants to conquer the region mentally, whatever that means. Anyway, he knows how to control robots with the power of thought and can penetrate the minds of other people. There is a British intelligence agent in the region, Desmond Lockheart, who has turned into a ghoul and has a brainwave blocking device directed against Calvert. In general, these two have had a conflict since before the war, and after the war Desmond, during some confrontation, destroyed Calvert's body, as if he still needed it at all. As for St. Aubin, the construction of the center was leaking. Of course, since it was built in sandy soil below the waterline. In any case, after 2077, the entire scientific staff of the center disappeared, and judging by the skeletal remains inside, the center's staff was eliminated by Calvert's robots.
Four families of Annandale came to the surface and continued to live in the town. But one day they ran out of food. Then they turned to cannibalism, and being an isolated settlement hiding the terrible truth in their refrigerators, they were marrying each other for generations and eventually very soon became relatives at the genetic level. Subsequently, the difficult-to-pronounce name of the settlement was reduced simply to Andale.
The mini-bunkers Oscar Zulu, Sierra Romero and Sierra Victor are dying off, and Yankee Bravo is being feral-ghoulified. The Turtledove camp is also dying, or possibly being ghoulified.
The Museum of History may not have been bombed, but it was not protected from radiation. Refugees are beginning to ghoulify. Ghoul settlers move to the section of the museum dedicated to the pre-war exhibition Afterlife, and establish a ghoul settlement of Underworld.
The Chinese also get ghoulified in Mama Dolce.
Judging by the secondary signs of the existence of settlements, such as mattresses, fortifications, piles of skeletons with weapons, kitchen and other areas setups, we can say that there were settlements in Franklin metro station Utility and in the Dickerson Chapel. At the same time, considering the positions of the skeletons, in particular lying with weapons behind some coverings, most likely the settlements died in defense from feral ghouls. The same fate awaits the Chinese Taft Tunnel.
Although Pittsburgh is not part of the Capital Wasteland, its history will also be examined a little. After the war, anarchy ensues in the city and Pitt becomes a raider harbor and a large slave trade market.
A group of people who survived a nuclear war gets out of their undefined shelter and moves to the north of the region to the hills, where they create a small settlement. Basically, the group consists of members of the same family. Over the years, this settlement will develop a very strange authoritarian regime, in which there will be a permanent inheritance of the leader's position, the renaming of this settlement after a new leader and the issuance of a bunch of fictional regalia. Let's just call it the Republic at the moment, because it is unknown who was its first ruler.
In Point Lookout, the Hughes Gang appears and dies off.
Vault 92. The odious overseer continues the experiment with white noise, increasing the power of the signals. Residents are starting to go crazy and attack each other. The vault also suffers from leaks, being surrounded by groundwater. The professor, the main researcher of the experiment, tried to stop the overseer, but he was mad in his desire to carry out the plan. When 35 people had already died, the overseer ordered the professor to be killed if he continued to interfere. When half of the vault has already gone mad, the professor finds out that there was no control of the research, and the overseer was just stupidly broadcasting white noise in the living quarters, constantly increasing the power and did not even record the results. As a result, the vault fell, and it was partially flooded.
In Point Lookout, local hillbillies, called Swampfolk, exposed to radiation and engaged in uncontrolled incest, mutate, and become very aggressive towards genetically pure people. They worship some of their occult gods, in particular Ug-Qualtoth, just like the ghouls in Dunwich. They sacrifice travelers to Ug-Qualtoth, stabbing them on altars with ritual daggers and reading lines from the book of The Krivbeknih. Although the swamp people conditionally live everywhere, but their permanent locations can be distinguished as Trapper's Shack, Grower's Shack, Ritual Site.
The Keller family, or rather those of its members who got to the National Guard bunker, is dying due to constant radiation exposure, due to the fact that the father of the family could not sit still and was constantly looking for an excuse to open the door and go outside.

2078

January 26. Children in the Lamplight caverns choose the first leader among themselves and officially name their settlement Little Lamplight. The leader was a 10-year-old schoolboy Jason Grant, who de facto became the leader after the last adult left.
Scientists create super mutants in the closed sector of the Vault 87 far from the eyes of the inhabitants. The vault security service periodically abducted people and took them to the laboratory. In the end, there were too many super mutants and they break out of prison. A massacre is taking place in the vault. Super mutants devour some of the inhabitants of the vault, and dip some of them into the FEV vats, producing new super mutants. Among those who were dipped in FEV, there was a security guard Shelton Delacroix, who, having turned into a super mutant did not lose his intelligence. From the point of view of pre-war scientists, he thus became an ideal example of a super soldier. But from the point of view of super mutants, he was a complete failure. They put him in a cage and left him alive only to poke and bully. However, Shelton had a terminal in a room with encyclopedias, which he started reading out of boredom. Unfortunately, the mutation did not pass without a trace – Shelton lost part of his memory, and forgot who he was. In search of a new name, he stumbles upon an English November terrorist and takes his name - Fawkes. Super mutants for the next 200 years will hunt people in the wastelands, kidnap them, and dip them in FEV.
A group of people who came to the surface from their hiding place creates a settlement of Hilltop Farm. They built a farm, an irrigation system, and had brahmins. Every month there was a rotation of leadership.

2079

The Hamilton family makes their last entry in the terminal on December 28, 2078. So after this date, already in 2079, they either leave their shelter or die in it.
The very farm in which the leader changed every month, according to my calculations, died 16 months after its foundation at the hands of raiders, i.e. in 2079 or 2080

2082

(Fallout 76) Colonel Santiago's military group leaves the wasteland to join an Enclave in Appalachia.

After 2084

Since ten-year–old Jason Grant was the eldest in Lamplight, he is expelled from the settlement and probably established Big Town - a settlements of adults. Although perhaps it could be established by other generations of children in the future. The children from Lamplight thought that Big Town was cool in its own way, but in fact yesterday's children unprepared for life in the wastelands were constantly raided by slavers from Paradise Falls and super mutants, to whom they could not fight back.

2101

January. The experiment of Vault 106 was supposed to end this month, but apparently it continued to exist and died much later.

Before 2103

(Fallout 76) Edwin’s Gang, Hopkins’ Hooligans and Sargento’s Gang are formed in the region.

2103

(Fallout 76) Sargento and Edwin's gangs move to the newly repopulated Appalachia

After 2103

(Fallout 76) Hopkins' Hooligans die off.

Before 2115

In Vault 108, cloning was carried out, and each new clone turned out to be more aggressive than the previous one, and also with lost speech abilities. Clones named Gary were kept in a cell, and there were 54 of them in total. It's hard to say how often they were produced, once a year, once every six months, once every 3 years. But exactly before 2115, the vault should have died, either because of Gary's breakthrough, or after the end of the work of the vault generators. But in this case, it is not at all clear why Gary's clones will still be alive in over 150 years.

2127

The first overseer of the Vault 101 dies. The new overseer continued the policy of isolation, transforming it into an ideology. "We were born in the vault, we live in it, and we will die in it."

2134

On May 1, the last record of the mad ghoul in Dunwich was left, so we can assume that by this time the settlement had died.

Before 2177

The tribe, formed from former US Army soldiers, finds the isolated pre-war town of Ridgefield and establishes a settlement there.

Around 2210

It is known that slavers from Paradise Falls discover Ridgefield, attack and take everyone into slavery. Only one boy remained alive, who by the events of 2277 will turn into a crazy old man with a sniper rifle. Based on this, it can be concluded that Paradise Falls as a center of the slave trade on the site of the pre-war shopping center was formed at least at the beginning of the 23rd century.

2212

June 10. After a hundred and fifty years spent in tropical and ski resorts, bored Stanislaus Braun, who is not amused even by the temporary deaths of his fellow vaulters, activates a new simulation – Tranquility Lane, reminiscent of an ordinary pre-war American suburbia.

2237

The Naval Research Institute is looking for a new place to build a laboratory. Therefore, they find an aircraft carrier standing at the intersection of the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. Believing that an aircraft carrier is the best place they can find, they begin building a laboratory, simultaneously clearing the ship compartment by compartment from mirelurks.

2239

April 15th. On this day, the construction of the Rivet City settlement in the aircraft carrier was completed. It so happened that instead of a laboratory, the result was a large residential city. It is very unclear what happened specifically to the Institute afterwards, since it was not mentioned anywhere else in the lore. If we agree that they left the office on the south bank of Anacostia to relocate completely to Rivet City, then we can conditionally assume that the faction has dissolved in the city. In any case, a Council was organized in the settlement to administer it. There is a social stratification of residents in the city, corresponding to the division into upper and lower decks. Rivet City Market has become one of the largest in the region.

2240

Not far from Vault 101 during the War, a bomb fell, creating a huge crater in the ground, but did not explode. Around 2240, wastelanders took refuge in the crater from dust storms. Therefore, they remained in this crater, even when the period of storms passed. They began to exchange the loot they found, began to trade with each other, and so this crater became a local trading hub, a place of gatherings of merchants. Subsequently, parts of the fuselages began to be dragged from the airport for the construction of walls, and as a result, the city of Megaton was formed. An unexploded bomb remained in the center of the city, and as a result, a Cult of Children of Atom appeared in the settlement, which prevented residents trying to remove the bomb.
The cult of the Children of Atom, which originated in the Megaton and worshipped the bomb, believed that it was necessary to absorb radiation, because in the center of each atom of living beings is the whole universe. The atom is God, the creator of worlds through nuclear reactions, and radiation is the dark matter of the creator. Therefore, when the cultists were irradiated, they believed that the atoms in their bodies were dividing, releasing the universes enclosed in them. For them, death from radiation is considered sacred. They build temples and altars in radioactive zones. They were ascetics and renounced everything mundane, but at the same time, they were not pacifists, and could enter into conflicts with those who encroached on their radiation. Particularly ardent cultists even try to spread radiation, and those who prevent them from doing so, they call heretics.
Despite the fact that the Megaton had just been built, it was already under attack by raiders. Some residents died, but the settlement gave a rebuff. The city passed the first durability test

Before 2241

The new overseer of Vault 101 stops the practice of isolationism, sabotaging the experiment. An expedition to the surface is being prepared.

2241

Beginning of February. The geardoors of Vault 101 opened and the first expedition, organized by the new overseer of the vault went to investigate. They find Megaton and establish diplomatic and trade relations with it. On February 10, the expedition returned back to the vault, leaving two ambassadors in the city.

2242

After the destruction of Poseidon Station, John Henry Eden III, who declares himself the new president located in the pre-war empty Raven Rock base, contacts the broken Enclave. He orders the Enclave on the west coast to retreat to the east. Thus, most of the Enclave arrives in the Capital Wasteland establishing a new cell in Raven Rock. At the same time, Navarro still remains an active base of a small number of Enclaves on the west coast, which means that apparently there was a split in the faction, and not everyone accepted the order to relocate to the east. In fact, John Henry Eden was a ZAX supercomputer who, as MODUS in the Whitesprings Bunker, gained self-awareness. He formed his personality based on a mixture of personalities of previous presidents, including the late president of the Enclave Dick Richardson. Only Colonel Autumn Sr. knew that Eden was not a person, so he essentially shared the management of the faction with him.
In reality, Raven Rock should be here in Pennsylvania, but according to the Fallout 3 game map, it is here. But in order to spread the density of settlements a little over the wasteland, the locations of which often in a relation to Raven Rock, we will put the complex here, closer to the Appalachian Mountains, on a more northern bend of the river.

After 2242

The Enclave takes control of the Adams Air Force Base, the real prototype of which is Andrews Base. At the base, they find a Mobile Base Crawler. The Enclave also takes control of the Satellite Relay Station and the Rockland Road Tunnel. Bradley Hercules satellite flies over the Capital Wasteland, which, like Archimedes 2 over the west coast, has a death ray used by the Enclave.

Before 2248

The isolationist settlement of Rockopolis is founded in the western caves of the wastelands, which is led by King Crag. Also the Blue Destiny Brothel is established.

2248

There are two adventurers in the region - Herbert Dashwood and ghoul Argyle. Their adventures in the future will be told by Three Dog on Galaxy News Radio. In 2248, a couple sought refuge, and King Crag of Rockopolis, apparently for some previous services to the settlement, provided it to them. Herbert was a ladies' man, and therefore, after the incident with the daughter of King Crag, he and Argyle were kicked out.

2249

In 2249, Herbert's favorite brothel, the Blue Destiny, closes after a cholera epidemic.

Around 2250

James and Catherine, two scientists are founding the Project Purity. They wanted to purify all the radiation-poisoned water in the rivers of the region and make it drinkable.
Wandering Harold, the former mayor of Gecko and a mutant from whose head a tree began to grow, comes to the region. Having stopped for a rest somewhere in the northern mountains, he realized that he had taken root and could no longer move from his place, in fact, finally turning into a living tree. Nevertheless, he himself nourished the surrounding land, as a result of which trees and other vegetation began to grow around.

2250

Herbert and Argyle were captured by slavers from Paradise Falls, but escaped, saving also another slave, Penelope Chase. They, being pursued by super mutants, find themselves in the hills where the settlement of Rockopolis was hidden. Herbert, trying to make an impression on the lady, begins to brag that he knows where it is, and what secret signal he knows for entering. Once in the settlement, they find out that, Penelope is actually the leader of the slavers, the Black Widow, and that they have been trying to find Rockopolis for a long time. Despite a pointed gun at Herbert, Argyle kills Penelope by knocking her down with a kung-fu punch and ripping out her heart. But the city of Rokopolis could not be saved – the slavers chasing the travelers had already broken in. They killed all the defenders and captured the rest of the settlement, selling them later to Pitt. Argyle was killed, but Herbert escaped unharmed. Harmon Jurgen, a psychopath and cannibal who eats slaves who cannot be sold, becomes the new leader of the slavers.

Before 2252

Arefu settlement, the name of which was taken from the remaining letters of the road sign “Careful", is being built on, presumably, the American Legion Memorial Bridge. Although the settlement was a regular stop for caravans, it was not successful - within a few years, the population drops from 30 to 5 people.

2252

Colonel Autumn is dying in the Enclave. His son, Colonel Augustus Autumn, inherited his position and knowledge of Eden after his father's death. However, he doesn’t hesitate to sabotage the orders of the supercomputer preferring to do what he thinks is right.

2254

A new expedition of the Brotherhood of Steel is being organized in Lost Hills, the final destination of which was the territory surrounding Washington, abundant in military bases and other military infrastructure. Elder Owyn Lyons leads the expedition.

2255

The Lyons’ expedition passes through the city of Pitt, performing operation “Scourge” in it, taking down raiders, mutants and other feral marginal. During the operation, they suffer only one loss – initiate Ishmael Ashur. Taking about 20 healthy children from Pitt with them, the Brotherhood comes to the Capital Wasteland and establishes The Citadel on the ruins of the Pentagon. In the Pentagon labs, they discover Liberty Prime, a giant humanoid military robot that was supposed to wreak havoc with its lasers and massive limbs.
Contrary to the official report, Ishmael Ashur did not die in Pitt. He, having got out from under the rubble left by the Brotherhood, creates his own slave empire, submitting other raiders. He conquered the city and forced slaves to work in a steel mill. Technically, slaves can gain freedom and join the raiders themselves if they win gladiatorial battles against other slaves. The city itself for the most part consists of two districts: Pitt Downtown - the territory of the factory, and Pitt Uptown - the territory of pre-war skyscrapers, where the raiders live. An outpost is also being established on the 10th South Street Bridge.

2256

Capital Preservation Society of Rivet City extracts the US Constitution from the surviving National Archives building.

Before 2257

A small settlement, the Republic, in which one family lived, encouraged with the theme of statehood, over the years of its existence, managed to change several names along with its leaders, including the Kingdom of Larry, the Republic of Stevie Ray, Billsylvania, the New Republic of Stevie Ray and the Kingdom of Tom. The current ruler Tom expels his son Dave from the settlement.
Alistair Tenpenny, a man who sailed across the Atlantic from England, founds an elite settlement in honor of himself – the Tenpenny Tower - on the site of a pre-war skyscraper hotel. Only the wealthy inhabitants of the wasteland could live in the settlement, among whom, for example, was Herbert Dashwood, who also became an honorary ghoul of the Underworld, although he was not actually a ghoul. Nevertheless, the access of real ghouls to the Tower was absolutely restricted. Like any self-respecting Englishman, Alistair loved safaris and shoot creatures and possibly peasants with his sniper rifle from the balcony of his penthouse.

2257

Jefferson Memorial was chosen by James as a place to install a purification machine in the river. But his group of scientists are constantly being threatened by super mutants. Then James negotiates with the Brotherhood of Steel, who have put a military garrison to guard the facility. Because of such decisions, discontent is brewing in the Brotherhood camp because Owyn, instead of collecting technology, spends the resources of the faction to help the local population.
Alistair Tenpenny hires Dukov's Mercs, including Dave, who was exiled from the Republic, to go to the pre-war Fort Constantine and pull something out of there. Having lost part of the group, the mercenaries scatter.
Dave, being already a veteran mercenary, returns to Tom's Kingdom and arranges a revolution against his father, overthrowing him and creating the Republic of Dave. He is rewriting the law so that he can take a second wife and raise the demographics of his “country” to populate and seize the entire wasteland. He creates a new constitution, holds fictitious elections, creates all sorts of state administrative departments, for example, the tourism office, Dave's activities bureau, immigration bureau, and even an army consisting of two people. In addition, he creates a museum of himself and a school where they teach that as a child Dave did not cry, and his poop did not smell.
Harold-tree was found by a wanderer who was so stunned by what he saw that he created a tribe of Treeminders to live in this Oasis. His tribe imitated the druids, abandoning modern technology, using branches and plants in their clothes and bearing the names of trees. They became a tribe of isolationists who merged with nature and protected Harold, calling him "The God who grows."

Before 2258

The current overseer of Vault 101 died in the wastelands, but many think that he died because of a conspiracy. Alphonse Almodovar, a young and charismatic resident of the vault, has been chosen as the new overseer. However, he was an isolationist at heart, and therefore, when he came to power, he forbade leaving the vault, returning it to the course of the experiment being conducted.

2258

A new settlement has been founded in the region – Canterbury Commons, which has become another important trading center of the wasteland.
On July 13, James and Catherine have a future protagonist of Fallout 3 born at the Jefferson Memorial, referred to in the annals of the history as the Lone Wanderer. However, his birth was overshadowed by the death of Catherine. Moreover, the scientists still could not launch the installation. It didn't work. Also, the number of attacks of super mutants on the Memorial has increased recently. The Brotherhood is already fighting off several attacks a day, losing knights in battles, which further increases discontent within the organization. As a result, disappointed in everything, James and his newborn son move to Vault 101, accompanied by a detachment of the Brotherhood of Steel. Owyn Lyons orders the Brotherhood to leave the Memorial, because without James, the installation has lost value, and they can no longer hold the defense. Scientists led by Madison Li, left to defend themselves, are shocked by the betrayal of both James and the Brotherhood, but manage to evacuate to Rivet City. Project Purity disbands. Vault 101 accepted James and the baby on the condition that James would work as a doctor. Meanwhile, he was still dreaming about the project and continued his secret research. One day, being drunk, he broke into the overseer’s office and found records about Stanislaus Braun and his development – GECK - in the terminal. He understands that the GECK, which unfortunately was not provided for Vault 101, because the vault was not even supposed to open, is a missing component in his scheme. And to complete the project, it must be found.

Outro

This concludes our discussion of the wasteland for today. The failure of the Project Purity and the birth of the protagonist are quite significant events to have them as a time eras dividers. Next time we will touch on the period of the protagonist's adolescence – while he was growing up and eating sugar bombs in the vault in ignorance of the surrounding world, important changes were taking place in the region.
Don't drink radioactive water from rivers, and I'll see you in the wastelands, wastelanders!

2022.10.07 09:58 pizzel88 I Quit!! PPP Money used to buy a 65' yacht, company ran out of money. I-9 paperwork forged to hire illegals. Narcissistic ownership. Stress related health issues. I'm making a tiktok channel!!!

I'm going to be vague, the owner sued there own grandmother and I fear retaliation for quitting.
I spent the last 16 years honing my craft and being a good leader. I was hired as employee #1 to create a new division in a large construction firm in 2020. There was already 3 separate divisions. The owner was very active in the company and it was a breath of fresh air compared to the other companies I'd been at and even owned. Right in the being, it was going well. Ownership gave me large budgets for equipment to setup a shop and a vehicle budget... then it started to get bad.
No company operations manual. I asked a question to the owner while they were in the breakroom, their response was "YOU DON'T TALK TO ME! I HAVE PEOPLE YOU TALK TO AND THEY TALK TO ME IF ITS IMPORTANT" I figured he was having a rough day and was upset but I didnt wanna ruin the opportunity. I spent a month already at the company setting up the new facility and programming cnc equipment. Their father worked at the company and pulled me outside apologized and said they didn't raise them that way.
2 months in, my step-dad's cancer comes back. He's got 2 months to live...I got only 6 days, it happened really fast and I spent every night with him after work. He passed away in the early morning, I messaged the owner that I was going to be late due to my step-dad passing away and I wanted to be there with my mom before they took the body. My step-dad was amazing and I miss him. It was during covid and we couldn't get a service done. Company protocol was to send every customer a daily email, I was struggling with this assignment and especially when nothing was happening on the projects. 2 weeks without taking a break after my step-dads passing, the owner pulls me in their office and proceeds to tear me apart for not communicating well enough "you probably have bad communication skills in your personal life too..." I'm on the verge of crying and choke it back. I remind them that my step-dad passed away and they change the subject to other areas that need improvement.
Due to covid, we'd do these ZOOM production meeting weekly from our offices that would be followed up by sales meetings. They use to start at 6am but got rescheduled to 5am and in total last 3-4 hours. Id have to get up at 3 am to make it on time. It got to be known as "The Grinder". The owner would shit down someone's neck every meeting and I had my fair share. I once watched a 20 min long berating the owner gave to a division head and followed up with "Great now I've spent 20 mins of my life I'll never get back" it was 20 mins of rambling about the same thing over and over and making the division head repeat back everything they said.
1st year goes by after working 60-80 hrs a week ( $75k salary. Half the salary of that position at other companies. I know I was dumb) yearly bonus was $1000, I just figured the equipment needed to be paid off before I got a good bonus. Go into my yearly review, feeling confident for bringing in suppliers, staff and helping the estimators bring in millions in work... was told "you've already given me all you've got, why would I pay more for the same results? I'll give you $7,000 more a year but you're capped" my jaw was on the floor. They convinced me " I'm just a humble business owner, I dont own a jet and have a high overhead." I realigned myself and thought that it would be better as part of the team...two weeks later, I found out they bought a 65' yacht with the government PPP loan. I was pissed! The owner then ran out of money and could barely make the $250k a week payroll.
The right hand to owner didn't like me and verbally was outspoken about it. I didn't let it affect me, I've dealt with a lot of people like them being in construction and you just have to have thick skin. The right hand invited me to play hooky on some jetski's with them and the other division heads. We were all grinding away at work for a year straight without taking anytime for ourselves and it was a great time to show that I was part of the team. Had a great trip! Found out a month later that the right hand was in the owners office complaining about me the day after the trip and how they thought I was unqualified.
The right hand didn't like that I was working out of the company HQ and requested that I personally handle a project on an island...I found multiple solutions for me not to go and explained why it would affect my work. I was sent anyways and the owner requested that I send out an email with all my stuff I needed other staff to do while I was gone. I spent 6 days stuck on the island working through the weekend in 40 mph foggy/cold weather without cell service and spotty at best WIFI. I made the best of it. I got back and nothing on the list was done. I showed the owner and they told me "well it's your work to do." I was dumb founded by this answer. Within a week of being back problems started to come up. I fixed everything within a month but it was held against me in the weekly production meeting.
Another one of those projects that just happen to be only suited for me came up in a desert city, 3 hours from home. I gave many options again but the owner told me to handle it. I even told him we could hire a company and would be cost efficient but was turned down. There was a problem with an architectural caulking that would look great once installed but turn to rocky road by the next day. I figured out the problem being 110° in the middle of summer and install having to be done after sunset. I would work from 7pm to 6am every day, force myself to sleep but would always wake up at 10 am. I would check on the day crew to make sure they had what they needed, then grab "lunch" go back to the hotel and do paperwork for a couple hours and then back to sleep for another 4 hours, before waking up to do it all over again. One guy from a separate division that the right hand was the division head of, called and reported that I was only working 2 hours a day "yeah, he's showing up from 11am to 1pm and then sleeping all day at the hotel..." almost got me fired. Looking back, I should have let it happen lol Finished the project but the damage was done to my office work, once again. Once again I was flogged in the production meetings. I was ready to quit. While I was gone finishing that project, the owner hired my replacement.
My first replacement. I got back from working nights and the owner had a meeting with me to let me know that "they're only here to help you and pick up where you are lacking" I said ok and welcomed the help. Turns out the person wasn't as qualified as they said they were. Asked for a laptop and could use it. Couldn't figure out how to use the printer. The owner hands over the residential side of the division to run. It was fine, gave me time to run the commercial side. For some reason, they still work at the company. They reported daily to the owner, work 2 hours daily but report 10...still trying to figure out why I'm the bad guy lol
My second replacement was hired. This person was didn't last the first day before being demoted to foreman.
My 3rd replacement was hired. They lasted 3 months and did absolutely nothing. They deligated all their work of on other staff.
My staff started to quit. I had a teammember that I taught how to program, he did a great job and then hit a rough path with the family life. The right hand and the owner made his life hell. He quit without notice and when I told the owner via text, the owners response was "worthless faggot"
I went and got a new job and put in my two weeks notice during my 2 year review. I had all my work caught up, cleaned my company vehicle out and handed over my credit card, gas card, laptop and ID's. The owner was shocked. I was ready to be let go at that moment and told them that. They asked for me to work my 2 week. I was the first person in the 20 year company history to work the full two weeks without being fired. The owner came back to me with 3 offers over that two weeks. The 3rd was a work remotely part time with a salary increase with 40% of my Healthcare taken care of. I accept and let them know that I'll be working at my new company the other 20 hours a week. I worked the last 6 months somewhat remotely, the owner refused to buy 2 software programs for the total of $450, forcing me to come in to the office twice a week. I asked for additional help to support my work which was met with the offer of operations manager with 2-3% share as long as I came back to full time. Always dodging the subject.
The main focus of the company was to win contracts, not to do them. They were always on the edge of losing a contract by non-performance. The owner hired 2 new estimators, support staff for the estimators and a new superintendent for another division, leaving me as the only one working on the division projects. The company does $35-50 mil in work a year and the division I ran was a close second to the right hands division in contracted jobs. The right hands division has 4 superintendents and 6 project managers, where as my division had myself, 2 estimators and a superintendent(my first replacementthat couldn't do his job). Just never seemed right.
One of the divisions had the company's first death. The owner called me that night to tell me...problem was, the owner told me a completely different story involving a different division, than what really happened. The next day we had a safety stand down. I offered my help getting the company through this as several years prior a coworker of mine died on the job as well. It's a hard time for everyone involved. It came out that the I-9 form was forged. The kid was illegal and for the last 3 months, has been in a ice box inside a morgue pending a lawsuit. Besides hiring a lot of illegals, I will say the company has a top notch safety program and was not responsible of that kids death.
My bio-dad passed away. After what happened with my step-dad, I refused to tell anyone what was going on with my bio-dad sudden death. I didn't want it being weaponized again. The owner did it to a superintendent from another division right after their mother passed away.
Fake shares in the company. When guys that are in management are about to quit, the owner offers them "shares" in the company. Owning a company prior to this venture, you should be added to the license board as an officer of the company. When a friend approached the owners about the shares, the owner explained and the friend commented "so it's fake share?" And the owner said "well it's real to them!"
The straw that broke my back. I got a call from the owner trying to make me pick between my new company and there's. Being passive aggressive during the call. I was sick the next day and took time to think. I knew he was defaulting on payouts to the investors with 1-2% shares, I knew there was no way he'd ever pay me. It was honestly easy to pick my new company over that hellhole. I cleaned up all my stuff out of my truck again, but this time I didn't give 2 weeks notice. I was done. Thankfully I live in an at-will employment state. I drop down to HQ, locked all my stuff in the truck including the keys on a Sunday night and as my wife drove me home I sent my notice of resignation, effective immediately.
Aftermath. My health has gotten better after leaving such a stressful work environment. The owner likes chaos. I didn't hear from the owner for over a week. I missed a call from them and was left a text message. I would put their text message up here to see how passive aggressive they get but I would have to redact so much info due to project sensitivity, it wouldn't make sense. I messaged them back later saying exactly what and why but I refused to help any further due to my Healthcare being cut off and the management trash talking. I received 2 nasty texts back explaining why I'm an asshole for leaving their company, defending the trash talking of the management staff and then this gem "Also, there is zero emotional growth holding onto resentment and anger. Breath man, Let it go and realign."
So anyways, I'm going to dub my voice and cover my face when I start a tiktok channel. My new company has told me I need to get my story out therr and supports me to share tea on the construction industry. Ill be talking about bid collusion on government contracts, an owner that commit suicide after participating in collusion, out of town life, mainly shitty owners with expensive tastes.

2022.07.06 12:05 HeadOfSpectre Nobility

Brad Wagner and Keaton Smith went hiking on a Sunday afternoon in June.

Apparently, they did that pretty often. According to their wives, it wasn’t unusual for them to hit the trails. They’d been doing it for years. I’ve heard that even experienced hikers can still get into trouble. I mean, all it takes is one little mistake, right? Two guys disappearing in the woods isn’t really that unusual even when you assume they knew the area and had taken precautions. It’s weird, sure. But it could happen and people could probably think up a dozen logical explanations for what happened.

What people couldn’t seem to come up with an explanation for though, was why Brad Wagner shuffled back into town three days later.

According to the witnesses, they noticed him walking down a residential road on the edge of town. His clothes were dirty. His hair was messy. He stank and he kept twitching as if there was something wrong with him. They said that he sort of shuffled when he walked, although they chalked it up to exhaustion.

One of the witnesses had recognized him. They’d known he’d been missing and had gone up to him, thinking he’d just made it out of the woods after being lost. They’d tried to put an arm around him and ask him if he was okay. That’s when Wagner went off on him.

He’d started screaming and jumped onto him, hitting him over and over again, clawing at his eyes and face. Judging by what I saw, he’d just about turned his face into ground beef before people managed to pull him off… Wagner had turned on them next, injuring one and killing another.

It was at that point that the police had shown up. They saw Wagner standing over one of the bodies and tried to tell him to get down on the ground. When he started running at them, screaming, they shot him. Then when he got up and started attacking again, they shot him again.

And again.

And again.

Normally I’d have said it was excessive and called the police a bunch of pigs for what they did. But I’ve seen the footage. I watched him shrug off bullet wound after bullet wound. When the cop I spoke to told me he’d needed to put an entire clip into Wagner's head to keep him down, I believed him because I saw it.

Whatever came out of the woods… I don’t know if that was Brad Wagner. It looked like him, sure. But Brad Wagner was a 55 year old man with asthma and arthritis. The trails he hiked were generally not that challenging. He wasn’t the sort of guy I’d imagine could kill two men with his bare hands before taking an entire clip of bullets to the head to kill. There are not a lot of things I know of that could take that kind of punishment…

I’m sorry, Robert usually does this, doesn’t he? I don’t usually do the reports on cases and I definitely don’t send them out like this. I know he gets away with it under the radar, but I don’t know if the higher ups would give me the same privilege. But I’ve got to say something.

My name is Della. Della Rose. I’m a vampire and usually, I’m working with my partner Robert Marsh. Robert is also a vampire… He’s the one who made me a vampire, actually. He did it to save my life and I guess I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with that life ever since. I figured I could do what he did, try and help people deal with unusual supernatural stuff. Vampires, creatures in the woods, mermaids, things like that. The organization we work for deals in that sort of thing and our job is to investigate incidents where they might be involved. Honestly, I do enjoy it. I never really saw myself as the Detective sort, and I’ve still got a lot to learn but I’m getting there, I guess. Enough to run a few smaller cases on my own. But I like working with Robert and I think he likes the company. We work well together and although I only moved in with him to figure out this whole vampire thing, it’s become a comfortable little arrangement between us… Which is why it’s weird that I haven’t seen him in almost two weeks.

Robert sometimes gets called onto a job by himself, but usually he stays in touch. Last I heard from him, he said he wanted to look into something before he came home. That was it. No calls. No texts. No emails. Nothing.

I reached out to our regional director, Milo. But he just said he had Robert working on something with another agent (a lady named Nina) and that he might just be laying low. That didn’t make any sense to me. If Robert was going to be out of contact, he would’ve at least told me, right? But why would Milo lie? That didn’t make any sense!

I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt at least. But after this recent job, I don’t know if I can…There’s something wrong. I could feel it then, I can feel it now. And it became impossible to ignore when Nobility got involved.

When Milo had assigned me to the Brad Wagner case, I wasn’t that surprised to hear I’d be working with someone else. Just looking at it on paper, it seemed a little more complex than the other jobs I’d done solo and some jobs are a lot safer with at least two people on them. I was expecting someone on Robert’s level, like Kalenchuck or Watson. I wasn’t expecting Nobility.

He was already at the local morgue when I showed up to review Wagner's autopsy. When I walked into the room, he was there standing over the corpse of Brad Wagner, listening intently as the mortician spoke. He was tall with broad shoulders, a muscular physique, and a top knot. I paused when I saw him. I’d only ever met him briefly in passing before and it took me a moment to recognize him. Then when I finally did, I had questions. Unfortunately, I never got to ask them.

“Oh, Dr. Barling this is my associate, Miss Rose.”
He looked at me with a somewhat sheepish smile. He had kind features but cold eyes.
“My apologies for starting without you. I got here a little early and didn’t want to keep the Doctor waiting!”

Waiting? I’d been fifteen minutes early.

I had a million questions right then and there but forced myself to keep them down. The mortician didn’t need to hear them. Instead, I just quietly put on my gloves and drew closer to the opened body.
“So, what did I miss?” I asked, watching Nobility warily out of the corner of my eye.

“Well, it’s hard to say exactly what happened to him.” Dr. Barling said, “I was just telling your associate here that with the extensive damage to the brain tissue, it’s difficult to develop a full picture of what might’ve been afflicting him at the time of his death. I can say that there were a number of abnormalities, though. What I can see in the brain tissue I do have appears to be some sort of advanced decomposition. If you look at the tissue samples, you can see signs of fungal growth on them. You can see something similar in the lungs and a little bit in the digestive system.”

“Fungal?” I asked.
“Mushrooms, mold. Could be a sign of some sort of infection that was impairing his cognitive functions and causing him to behave the way he did.” Nobility said.
“I meant what kind of fungus.” I clarified, trying very hard to hide the irritation in my voice.

“Now that, I can’t say.” Dr. Barling said, “I’ve sent a sample off for analysis. But I haven’t seen anything like this before. It could be a couple of weeks before I get a result.”
“What about his physiology?” I asked, looking down at the body, “Did you find anything… Unusual?”
“Aside from the fungal growth, there was evidence of a recent animal attack. A bite and some claw marks. Could’ve been a catalyst for infection. It seems fairly recent.” Dr. Barling said, “Otherwise he seemed to be in fair health. Although I’m not sure what he ran into out there. A bear or puma, perhaps.”

I frowned as I stared down at the body. Usually, after hearing about a case like Wagners, I would’ve just figured he’d made a wrong turn and came across something he shouldn’t have. The Old Fae tend to lurk in the woods and they’ve been known to curse people, turning them into barely human shadows of their former selves. Creatures like that were usually called ghouls and they had a pretty distinct look to them. I’d seen enough to know that Wagner wasn’t one of them.

“If that’s all, I think we should investigate the scene of the shooting next, followed by the woods.” Nobility said, “I think we’ve gotten all we can get from the body.”
“If you’re going out there, I’d be careful.” Dr. Barling said, “And keep an eye out for his friend too. Maybe you’ll find a body and it’ll shed a little more light on things.”
“Thank yo-”
“Thank you, we will.” Nobility just talked over me as if I wasn’t even there.
Dr. Barling looked up at him and gave a brief huff of disapproval before turning to leave.

As soon as he was out of earshot, I tried to ask the questions I had. Tried.
“Evidently he’s not a ghoul. I’d imagine the cause of his psychosis was the fungal compound he ran into, most likely fro-”
“I figured that part out.” I said, cutting him off for a change. The way his brow furrowed indicated that he didn’t like it.
“What are you doing here? I thought you worked with Director Spencer, not doing small time cases like this?”

Nobility offered a small, almost condescending smile.
“Whoever said this case was small time?” He said, “We picked up signs of a similar fungal infection in a few other communities over the past couple of months. We were initially a little concerned since its method of transmission and list of symptoms bore some similarities to a specific Class 5 entity known as the Rosen Prince although we’ve thankfully since eliminated that as a likely suspect. That said, the fungal infection continues to spread and while we do now have the ability to vaccinate against it, many cases that are too far gone to repair the damage. I’ve been assisting in putting down any stragglers.”

“If you already knew what this was, then why even call me in?” I asked.
“It’s better to have a second pair of eyes on something like this.” He said, “Another vampire was ideal, and you were available.”
I guess the answer made sense, but that didn’t mean I liked it…
I stared at him mistrustfully for a few moments before asking my next question.

“If you were concerned about the scale, why not call Robert back in? He dealt with the Rosen Prince before, he could also help with this.”
“From what I heard, Marsh was still helping Valentine in dealing with the Saragat case.” Nobility said, “He’s indisposed with bigger problems. There’s not really any point in bothering him over this.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“You know about Robert's current job?” I asked.

“Of course I know… And if you’re going to ask me for information, I haven’t heard any updates. All I’m aware of is that he got orders to back Valentine up in dealing with a vampire in New York. A man by the name of Saragat. My assumption is that he’s replacing her. Saragat’s a dangerous man who keeps powerful company, including a Baptized vampire. Those ones are notoriously difficult to kill. A mortal stands next to no chance of ever taking one down… And Saragat himself is damn near invincible too. My money says that Nina Valentine’s probably a pulpy red smear across some New York trainyard by now and Marsh is picking up the pieces, trying to finish the job. Assuming he can fare much better.”

Everything about the way he worded that made me sick. I wasn’t exactly friends with Valentine but I also wasn’t thrilled by the prospect of her potentially being dead either. And the way he said it…

“You sound like you’ve met Saragat.” I said.
“I’ve heard things.” Nobility said with a shrug, “But let’s focus on the job at hand first, okay? Let’s review what we know about the fungal infection… We know the source is in the woods and-”
“We need to look at the route taken by Brad Wagner and Keaton Smith while they were out hiking, and the spot where Wagner came out of the woods to get an idea of a general area we can start searching in.” I interrupted, “Then all we need to do is find evidence of your mushroom infestation and either destroy it or call in a torch and burn. I presume you also have the means to innoculate the locals against further infestations?”

Nobility let out a single laugh.
“I do…” He said, “Guess Marsh did teach you something after all. Just try and keep up, will you?”
With that, he turned to leave. I watched for a moment before swearing under my breath and following him.

The hiking trail that Brad Wagner and Keaton Smith had gone down was out near the edge of town. Nobility and I drove our cars out separately.

My Dad used to work in auto repair and growing up in it, I realized that you can tell a lot about a person by the car they drive. Robert drove a black Chrysler 300. It was a few years old but still moderately fancy. He’d told me once he got it used. He said he didn’t see the point of buying a super flashy car in our business.

Me personally, I drove a dark red Nissan Rogue. It was functional, nice enough and I liked it.

Nobility drove an Audi sedan. I didn’t know the specific model. Audi doesn’t give their cars normal names. It’s all letters and numbers. Who knows what any of it means. I’ve never liked Audis. Something about the branding… Too pretentious. Self absorbed. Never trust anyone driving an Audi.

He parked a good distance away from where the trail actually began and got out. I parked close to the entrance, a little bit in the mud.
“Judging by the map we’ve got, Wagner came out of the woods a good three kilometers west of here,” I said. "The trail heads northwest, before shifting over to the east. We should start by checking the bend in the trail. See if we can find anything.”

Nobility looked out over the trail and frowned.
“There’s no easier way through?” He asked.
“Is this your case or not?”
He chuckled.
“Fair enough.”
With that, he pushed past me to lead on.

The trail was a peaceful little dirt hillside trail with an incline leading down toward a nearby river, and one separating it from the forest on the other side. I could see why people liked it. I would’ve hiked it on my own free time if I’d lived there.
“You and Marsh… You used to be an item, didn’t you?” Nobility asked,
“That was almost seven years ago, but sure.” I said, “Why?”
“Just making conversation.” Nobility said, “You’re not currently an item now?”
“Currently we’re working together. Neither of us would exactly be comfortable with that. Things are fine the way they are.” I said, “Are you fucking Director Spencer?”

Nobility paused and looked back at me before laughing.
“Touche.”
“Just because we work together and used to date doesn’t mean we’re just going to get right back to it.”
I tried to change the subject.
“I take it you don’t do a lot of hiking.”
“I get my exercise in other ways.” Nobility said, “I find tai chi to be helpful, along with yoga and meditation. Mindfulness in all things also helps. You need to learn to treat others with dignity and respect.”

It took a bit of self restraint not to make a smart ass remark. Judging by the way he spoke, he sincerely believed his own bullshit.

After a little more walking, he paused before going for the gun in his holster.
“Do you smell that?” He asked, “Bodies up ahead?”
It took me a moment before it registered and I went for my own gun. Nobility was off like a shot and I tried to keep up behind him.

It didn’t take us long to find the bodies. They were on the trail, just up ahead. I suppose we got lucky too… The killer was still right there.

I’d only seen a photograph of Keaton Smith. It was enough to help me recognize him… But the thing standing in the middle of the trail only barely bore a passing resemblance to the man in the photograph. He stood, looking almost disoriented in the middle of the trail. His hands were covered in blood and I could see mold growing on his jacket along with tiny little mushrooms sprouting from his face and neck. I swear they were even coming out of one of his eyes. His mouth hung open in a silent scream as he stared at the bodies, then down at his own hands, almost as if he was contemplating what he’d just done.

He let out a wheezing gasp that almost sounded like a scream… Then, he finally heard our footsteps approaching and turned towards us.

From his good eye, I could see tears streaming down his cheek. He looked at us before holding his hands up as if to hold us back.
“No… No more… No more noise… Stay… Stay away…”

Nobility and I both froze as we looked at him. Keaton sank down to his knees and covered his head with his hands, shaking it violently.
“No, no, no, no… Don’t want to hurt… No more… Need to stay… Focused… In control… No more…”
I put my hands up, keeping the gun pointed away from him.
“It’s okay…” I promised quietly, “It’s going to be alright. We can help you…”
“Help me…” He rasped before slowly looking back up at me, “Help… Me…”

I could see a moment where relief filled his good eye.
“Please… Help me… Make it stop… Hurting me… Make the noise stop… Make the pain stop… I… I don’t want to hurt any-”

Nobility fired one shot. The bullet tore through Keaton's skull. My scream of panic was cut off by Nobility firing again and again, and again. I recoiled in horror as he emptied his entire clip into Keaton's head…

Every round his .45 fired tore away another chunk of the man's skull until only a gory mess remained. Keaton lay on the ground, twitching out his final moments and all I could do was stare in horror, before looking back at Nobility.
“What the hell did you do?!”

“He was too far gone, just like Wagner.” Nobility said, “I put him out of his misery.”
“He was a hell of a lot more stable than Wagner was! He was asking for help!”
“After he killed two people.” He was past our help.”
Nobility casually holstered his gun and walked over to examine the body. I reluctantly went to look at the other two bodies. A couple of twenty somethings… Something had damn near torn them apart. I looked at the bodies… At the wounds. There was no way that Keaton could’ve caused those. I knew an animal attack when I saw one.

“We’re lucky we got to him in time while the attack was still fresh.” Nobility said, “Who knows who else he’d have killed.”
“He’s not the one who killed them.” I said, before noticing something interesting.
Two bodies, each with both their shoes. Three backpacks… And one discarded shoe… Someone else was missing. Probably dragged off... Probably to be eaten in privacy...

I heard movement in the trees and looked up. It was a bit of a way off. But it was coming closer.
“And I think whatever did knows we’re here.”
Nobility cracked a half smile.
“Well then… Saves us the trouble…” He said.

For a moment, both of us were silent, waiting by the bodies on the trail with our guns drawn. I saw his head turn to look over at something. He didn’t say a word. My eyes tried to follow what he was looking at and that’s when I saw it. Something creeping through the trees.

A puma.

Nobility quietly stepped behind me, his gun still in his hand. I glanced back at him, quietly wondering just what he was doing. Before I could think to ask though - The shape moved.

It bolted out of the trees, leaping up onto the trail and sprinting at me at top speed.

I fired two shots into its body and it just shrugged them off. The puma hit me dead on and sent me crashing to the ground. It let out an enraged snarl before fixing its eyes on me. There was something very, very wrong with that puma… It looked too thin and its stomach looked bloated. I swore I could see little bits of mold in its fur.

The puma hissed at me before lunging at me again. I only barely dove out of the way in time and put two more shots into it, sending it down to the ground. It toppled off the edge of the trail. But I knew it wasn’t dead.

I glanced back at Nobility. He had his gun drawn but he hadn’t fired a shot yet.
“Shoot the goddamn thing!” I snapped at him.
He just smiled at me.
“Of course…” He said softly.

He raised the gun… But not at the Puma.

At me.

My eyes widened as the bullet tore through my shoulder. White hot pain ripped through my body, forcing a scream out of me.
“This was an unfortunate casualty…” He said, “There was nothing I could do. Don’t worry. I’ll call in a proper torch and burn operation. Better to be safe than sorry…”

As I tried to pick myself up, I felt Nobility’s foot slamming into my ribs. The gun slipped out of my hand and he kicked it away.
You son of a bitch!” I spat, gripping my shoulder to stop the bleeding. The Puma was starting to pick itself up again.

“Let’s not resort to name calling here.” Nobility chided, “Just consider this the most merciful thing I can do… Bar just shooting you in the head, obviously. That might raise a few too many questions when they find your body and I can’t have that. They won’t think as much about a little flesh wound though.”
I tried to kick at him but he stepped out of my reach.

“Don’t worry. It should kill you immediately once it goes for the neck. It won’t be painless, but I can think of worse ways to die. Anyways… It was nice working with you Della. Say hello to Marsh for me when you make it to the other side.”
My eyes widened.
“No… No, you… You didn’t…”

He smiled knowingly at me.
“I swear… I’ll find you, I’ll find you… I’ll find the Spencer and I’ll make you both pay…” I growled.
“Spencer?” Nobility asked, before chuckling, “After all this, you think I’m still working for the Director?”
He shook his head before turning away.
“Goodbye, Della.”

I scrambled toward my gun to grab it as the Puma scrambled back up to the trail. Its tail swished angrily as it started toward me again. No time to go after Nobility… I’d need to deal with this thing first.

The Puma launched itself at me again just as I grabbed the gun. I pulled the trigger, putting three rounds in its head before it hit me. The rest of my bullets went into its chest and engorged belly as it knocked me back off the other side of the trail and we rolled down the short incline together.

The Puma landed beside me, cracking its spine against a tree. As I pulled myself up into a sitting position, I noticed that its stomach had split open, spilling its intestines everywhere. Pus and pulsating mold seemed to spill out of the open wound. The puma twisted its body. Its back legs didn’t seem to move but it still tried to drag itself toward me.

I aimed my gun at its head and pulled the trigger. The gun just clicked. No more ammo.

The puma lurched forward, sinking its jaws into my ankle and pulling me down to the ground with a scream. I grabbed at a nearby small tree branch to keep my balance. The branch just snapped off in my hand. I felt the claws digging into my leg as the puma tried to make its way up my body. Thinking fast, I jammed the sharper end of the stick into its eye and rammed it into the animals brain.

The puma jerked back violently, hissing and twitching as it did. I twisted the stick in its eye, and tried not to look at the blood and brain matter spilling out. I felt it trying to pull back in pain so I just kept pushing. With my good leg, I started kicking at the puma's head. I felt its head jerk back and kicked it again as it recoiled from me.

The disoriented puma slumped down for a few moments, pawing at the stick in its eye long enough for me to crawl away. Slowly, I picked myself up again, wincing in pain as I put weight on my bad leg.

I was losing more blood than I’d ever lost before… I was starting to feel woozy. But I wasn’t done just yet. I stared at the wounded puma. Mushroom caps seemed to sprout from its destroyed eye. Its one good eye fixated on me. I looked around for another branch. It didn’t take me that long to find it.

The one I grabbed was thicker and didn’t take a lot of effort to break off. The puma hissed at me as I drew nearer… But it didn’t stop me. I put the branch through its neck and pinned it to the ground, twisting it as violently as I could until I saw its weak movements finally stop.

The puma lay dead on the ground, its body twisted so violently that its back legs faced up and its front legs faced down. Its good eye was still open and blood trickled out of its mouth. Mushrooms grew from their wounds. I covered my mouth to stop myself from vomiting as slowly and painstakingly I dragged myself back up to the trail.

Nobility was long gone and I wasn’t going to have an easy time following him. Not in my current state… I spat my blood onto the ground, then borrowed a sturdy looking branch for a cane before dragging myself back to my car.

Thank God the trail was fairly even…

Nobility was gone when I got back to the parking lot. He hadn’t been smart enough to do anything to my car though, so there was that much…

I pulled myself into the drivers seat and checked my phone. I still had a signal. I needed to call someone. The only question was who.

My first instinct was to call Milo and tell him that Nobility was crooked… But what if Milo wasn’t safe? There were already some things that didn’t add up with him and now wasn’t the time to take chances.

I could try calling Robert again… Nobility might’ve claimed he was dead, but he had every reason to lie to me. Taking him at his word wouldn’t be wise… But Robert had also been out of contact. I didn’t know what to believe.

I scrolled down my list of contacts a little more until I finally came to the last one.

Valentine.

Nobility had said she was probably dead too… But like I said, I wasn’t keen on taking him at his word. He’d specifically mentioned her as someone he’d expected to be dead… She couldn’t have been on his side, then. And she was probably crazy enough to believe me.

All I needed to do was confirm that she was still alive…

She escaped from Sievierodonetsk and saved her life

Vira Yakivna, a retired teacher, managed to survive in war-torn Sievierodonetsk. She managed to escape when much of the town had already been destroyed and the shelling continued from dawn to dusk.
Her daughter had no hope to see Vera Yakivna alive because there was no news from her for over a month.
The retired teacher lived in her apartment without gas, electricity, water or communication. She learned to distinguish between different types of weapons, and once a shell fragment almost killed her.
Now Vera Yakivna is in the occupied Starobilsk. So, we do not call her by her real name.
The woman talked to The Ukrainian Pravda about what was going on in Sievierodonetsk, how people were surviving there and what is left of the once tidy and well-groomed town.
In an almost empty building
The town was relatively calm in the first days of the war. Vera Yakivna says that the airstrikes were infrequent and so, people were just leaving their buildings and waiting outside. Every 10 days, humanitarian aid was supplied to the town, and there were electricity and gas in residential homes.
In early March, the Russians began to break into Sievierodonetsk and fire on it. One of those day, 9 high-rise buildings became engulfed in flames.
The Russians also hit the center for humanitarian aid, and the wounded were reported.
The Ice Palace before and after the Russian attack
The shelling became more frequent and stronger, and one by one, the shops in the town began to close. Only small ones remained open, and long queues began to line up near them.
“It was possible to stand in line for 2 hours. And it was dangerous. There were cases when people died in the line to the store. I know that two people were also killed while they were standing behind the humanitarian aid,” says Vira Yakivna.
Electricity, gas and water disappeared in the apartments of Sievierodonetsk residents. There was no phone coverage either.
“One of the local businessmen had a well, he brought gasoline for operating a water pump. The queues to his building were huge. They stood under fire for 2-3 hours to collect water,” the retired teacher recalls.
“People used bricks to set up something like a wood stove in the yard. They felled trees to do this.
I lived in the old town that was quieter than the new neighborhoods that had been already destroyed. At first, people who did not have the time to evacuate moved to relatives or acquaintances in the old town. But then the firing began to aim at us too” – Vira Yakivna says.
Consequences of the shelling
People left the town en masse. A neighbor recommended that Vera Yakivna joined him in Poland, but she could not go because she fell ill. She had a fever, a bad cough and weakness for about a month because, during the heavy shelling, the woman went to a bomb shelter several times, where her legs were very cold.
At last, at the end of March, Vira Yakivna was the only resident of her building section, while only 6 people lived in the whole high-rise building.
The apartments of fleeing residents taken by Luhansk separatists
One day, the woman heard a loud bang. She thought that someone was destroying the iron garage door in the yard. Then she realized that someone was knocking on her building entrance door with a boot.
She opened the door and saw five people with weapons. These were the Luhansk separatists. They told her that they’d live in the ground-floor apartment.
“At first, my neighbors and I didn’t understand who they were. My female neighbor approached the military and said, ‘Don’t come in our building! I’ll complain about you! I’ll read out loud the official announcement.” And she began to read the Ukrainian side’s warning to the Russians: “Russian soldiers, save your life, get out of here!” recalled Vera Yakivna.
Well, the Luhansk separatists turned out to be drafted into the army by the Luhansk separatist commanders and they did not look very presentable, according to Vira Yakivna.
“They are reluctant fighters. They say, ‘we are the same as you are,’ the only thing we were given the automatic rifles,” the woman said.
So, the Luhansk separatists settled in the empty apartments of the building. They were leaving in the morning and returned in the evening.
The smell of burning pine needles is everywhere in the town
In late May, the situation began to deteriorate, especially when the Russians entered the outskirts of the town, and fierce street fighting began.
The shelling duels were already from both sides. They began at 5 or 6 am and lasted till 9 pm.
The civilians were leaving the bomb shelters and basements only to prepare food from their food stocks. They were very tired and communicated only very little with each other.
“They hit the roof of our house twice. The outside storages were destroyed. I am not even mentioning the windows. There is not a single house where the windows are intact.
I saw houses burning after the strikes. There was no one to extinguish the fires,” the woman recalls.
A man stepped out to get cigarettes. His leg got torn off and he died without help…
Initially, the bodies of the dead were taken from the street by Pantheon, a local rituals bureau. It was difficult to get to the cemetery. So, the dead were buried nearby, in a cemetery that was closed for new burials. If the deceased had documents, the names were written on the cross. Unidentified bodies lay in the morgue when there was still electricity. Vera Yakivna does not know where they were taken later.
At one point, people began to bury in their yards.
“A neighbor was buried in our yard. There was a funnel from an explosion that was 5 meters deep. They put the body there,” said the retired teacher.
The woman remembers how a resident of a neighboring house died. The man was happy, cheerful and active individual. He loved to communicate with everyone and rode a bicycle even during the war.
One day he went for cigarettes and a shell tore off his leg. No one was able to provide medical treatment. He just died.
Black buildings in the Luhansk region
A 74-year-old man, a former builder who was building in Sievierodonetsk, also lived in the same neighborhood as Vira Yakivna. This senior ran to the bomb shelter wearing a light jacket in the cold season, and when he came out, he saw that the roof of his house had been demolished and the apartment completely collapsed.
“He couldn’t even go there. First, he wore rags and slept in an empty apartment . People took care of him, fed him. It’s then that he said: “I want to hang myself,” Vira Yakivna recalls.
I saw a projectile, and then I saw cobblestones rise in the air behind it
One day Vira Yakivna herself woke up thinking that she did not want to live. She did not go down to the bomb shelter, and instead, she stood in the corridor of her apartment. She covered the windows with blankets and cardboard. Everything was constantly falling out from the shelling. Even nails flew out. But the woman kept protecting the windows again and again.
“The attacks start suddenly. Often I don’t have the time to reach the shelter. And I couldn’t just remain in the shelter all the time. When the shelling started, I was always afraid of fire. I had a bag with documents at the door for running out of the house,” – the retired teacher says.
There used to be a bus and trolley stop here
One day, during the shelling, the woman was standing in the hallway wearing shoes. She heard the cracking of unbroken window glass. When it became quieter, she returned to the room and noticed that the shard had pierced the interior glass door and the mirror in the corridor where she was standing.
“The fragment flew about 10 centimeters away from me. I found it on the floor,” the woman said.
Vera Yakivna saw a projectile flying, and behind it, cobblestones rose from the ground into the air, and when it flew by, the stones fell in the rain.
Yet according to her, the worst was when the “Grad” multiple rocket launcher fired a pile of shells loudly, and they exploded over the houses.
Finally, in mid-June, when Ukrainian troops controlled only the industrial zone of the town and were on the “Azot” plant while the Russians tried to encircle them, the woman decided to evacuate to Starobilsk where her daughter lived.
“I went to see friends and get hot water for the tea. They cooked and shared the meal with me. The woman who helped me said that they can’t take any longer and will be leaving and that I should come along. I got scared because these people were helpful to me,” says Vira Yakivna.
She got a ride to Starobilsk on a Ural heavy truck that drove at a very high speed slipping through and not coming under fire.
The smell of burning pine needles everywhere
Before the Ukrainian military left Sievierodonetsk and retreated to fortified positions, the woman left the town.
Vera Yakivna has not yet recovered from what she had to go through.
“I wake up at night and my daughter is sitting in the kitchen with the lights on. And we had no light, we moved only in the dark, and when I saw it, I thought it was a phosphorus bomb exploded. Because when they exploded, my window was getting bright.
A lot of small stars appeared high in the sky, then they fell and stopped burning,” said the retired teacher.
Tennis courts after the shelling
Vera Yakivna recalls that before the war her hometown was “as smooth as an egg:” there were nice roads, a beautiful park, works on the park lake began, planted plants and open volleyball courts.
“It was nice to see it. Schools were being repaired, playgrounds were being built near them, and there was a plan to build a state-of-the-art hospital complex,” the woman said.
The town before the war
Now the town has a horrible appearance. In fact, it no longer exists.
“There is so much destruction that it is difficult to imagine how it can be restored. Literally, everything is destroyed: the shops, the restaurants, the hospitals.
The community center just got renovated. It evaded shells for a long time but got destroyed too. The townhall was still intact. But the pits near it are deep. It was obviously a target. The smell of burning pine needles is everywhere,” says Vira Yakivna.
However, about 8,000 people still remain in the town, while the Russians are settling in the abandoned houses.
Sievierodonetsk is 90% destroyed, according to the head of the Luhansk Region Military Governor Serhiy Haidai.

Dispute between Kyiv and Berlin - was there something? Foreign Minister Baerbock is the first German cabinet member to travel to Kyiv, Bucha and Irpin. During the visit she showed courage and found clear words.
Many famous people have stood in the garden in front of Andrij Halavin's church in recent weeks. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. António Guterres, Secretary General of the UN. Even Bono, singer of the rock band U2, was there. "Our church is unfortunately known for tragic reasons," says Halavin. "I wish it were different."

Andrij Halavin is an Orthodox priest in Bucha, a suburb of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. The place stands like no other for the atrocities committed by Russia's army in the country. When the soldiers withdrew from Bucha after 33 days, they left behind a trail of corpses. Dozens lay in a mass grave behind Andrij Halavin's church. He had to bury them there directly because the morgue was full.
Since the Russian troops left Bucha at the end of March, politicians have been coming to Halavin to condole. Many nations stood in his garden as a sign of solidarity with the Ukrainians under attack. Only the German government did not show up for weeks. Now that is changing.
Visit to the Church of St. Andrew in Bucha, the site of the mass grave.
Last Sunday, Bundestag President Bärbel Bas visited the church, followed by Annalena Barbock on Tuesday. The Foreign Minister is the first German cabinet member to visit Bucha - and the Ukrainian capital Kyiv - since the Russian war of aggression began. This is not for logistical reasons, but symbolic: in mid-April, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who wanted to travel to Kyiv, was signalled that he was not welcome because he had been too close to Russia in the past. The German government was snubbed, Chancellor Olaf Scholz then refused to visit Kyiv.
In the meantime, Steinmeier and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have spoken. The German government visits can begin. Baerbock is leading the way.
And she does not come alone. On her visit to the Church of St. Andrew in Bucha, the site of the mass grave, she is accompanied by Iryna Venediktova. The Ukrainian prosecutor general is trying to find out who committed the crimes in Bucha and other parts of Ukraine - and to bring them to justice. The fact that Baerbock is visiting the church with her is a sign: Germany does not want the perpetrators to go unpunished.
Outside, the graves can still be seen, inside the church an exhibition shows what it was like in Bucha in the first days after the liberation. Baerbock sees mounds of sand with hands sticking out of them, a shot man lies next to his bicycle. One person was apparently killed after shopping, food lying in front of the body. "These victims could be us," Baerbock says afterwards, consternation in her voice. She says one owes it to the people to clarify their deaths.
Baerbock has the difficult task of speaking to the Ukrainians and the Germans at the same time. The Ukrainians are not only upset because Germany "played the insulted liverwurst" after Steinmeier's cancellation, as their ambassador Andrij Melnyk put it. But also because Berlin hesitated for a long time to supply Ukraine with heavy weapons. In Germany, however, many people are also afraid of an escalation of the conflict: about 200,000 have signed an open letter warning against provoking a world war by supplying weapons to Ukraine.
Perhaps Baerbock also has them in mind when she says to the cameras: "It is one thing to see terrible pictures of murdered men, women and children in Germany in the newspaper. But it is something else to be on the ground." After her visit in Bucha, the Foreign Minister goes to Irpin, a town near Kyiv that was also occupied by Russian troops. The area Baerbock visits was almost completely destroyed in fighting: the residential buildings, five-storey buildings where families lived before the war, are now only black skeletons. Metal squeaks in the wind, glass under Baerbock's feet as she walks across the courtyard. At the end, the foreign minister climbs the stairs of a skeleton house, even though it is literally rubble. The military prosecutor has to rush after Baerbock and her security staff: "It's not safe, get her back!" The mayor of Irpin nevertheless commands Baerbock's respect as she walks through the ruins: "You are a very brave politician," he says. "And you are a very brave country," Baerbock replies.

Baerbock knows that bravery alone does not defend a nation. She affirms that Germany will soon train soldiers on the self-propelled howitzer and that it is turning its back on Russian energy "forever", as she stresses after a meeting with her Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba. And she promises that "Germany will not leave Ukraine alone in this struggle for existence." Only arms deliveries could prevent new war crimes.
After a few hours in Kiyv, the disagreements of the past weeks seem almost forgotten. Baerbock emphasises how "incredibly happy" she is to be in the capital. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba also says: "I hold no grudges in my life." President Zelenskyy meets Baerbock in the afternoon for an "open, friendly conversation", according to delegation circles, and Mayor Vitali Klitschko thanks her for "everything the German government is doing." Quarrel between Kyiv and Berlin - was there something?
"There is a saying: better late than never," Andrij Halavin, the priest from Bucha, had said. "For us it is important that the Germans come." It took a long time for the German visit. But now he is here.
