With the rapid development of residential energy storage in Europe, it has emerged as a key player in the realm of energy transformation. On one hand, the imperative of transitioning to renewable energy sources is undeniable. On the other hand, certain regions grapple with weak grid infrastructure, intensifying the demand for localized residential storage solutions. As the industry matures, accompanied by declining raw material costs, the prices of residential storage systems are starting to decline. Simultaneously, the burgeoning demand for Energy Storage Systems (ESS) suggests ample room for further market penetration.
Moreover, residential energy storage products primarily cater to consumers (To C), necessitating a competitive edge in product quality, brand recognition, and distribution channels to ensure sustained profitability.
In 2022, the energy storage industry witnessed a meteoric rise, evolving from its nascent stages. By 2023, however, demand tapered off amidst shifting policies and inventory dynamics. Now, in 2024, the trajectory of the residential energy storage sector is poised to be influenced by a multitude of factors, including sustained policy support, product innovation, channel optimization, dwindling inventory levels, and declining interest rates. The forthcoming discussion will delve into the anticipated future of the industry, drawing insights from the experiences of international energy storage enterprises.
SolarEdge:
SolarEdge dominates the European market, offering cost-effective products that pose a challenge for our enterprises to match. Renowned as a top player in solar and storage inverters across Europe and the United States, SolarEdge boasts a market share that reigns supreme in both regions.
Established in Delaware in 2006, SolarEdge experienced rapid growth through strategic collaborations, notably with Tesla SolarCity from 2013 to 2015, culminating in its NASDAQ listing in 2015. The 2017 mandate by the United States NEC requiring solar PV systems to integrate Module Level Power Electronics (MLPE) with rapid shutdown functionality played to SolarEdge's strengths, enabling the company to swiftly expand its market share.
According to data from Wood Mackenzie, SolarEdge secured the 7th position in global inverter shipments in 2022, firmly establishing its dominance in European and American markets.
SolarEdge's product portfolio encompasses a diverse range of offerings, including solar and storage inverters, energy storage systems, uninterruptible power supplies, electric vehicle charging stations, and integrated solar and energy storage solutions. These solutions cater to various sectors, spanning from residential and commercial to utility-scale ground-mounted power installations.
In 2023, SolarEdge introduced the SolarEdge One software, marking a significant expansion into the realm of virtual power plants. Through sophisticated algorithms, this software facilitates new energy power trading, empowering customers with advanced solar and energy storage solutions. By bridging the gap between software and hardware, SolarEdge continues to bolster its product ecosystem, solidifying its position as a leading provider of comprehensive new energy solutions.
With a strong focus on customer collaboration, technological mastery, and leveraging the benefits of U.S. trade policies, SolarEdge has consistently excelled.
The first phase, starting in 2013, saw SolarEdge achieve rapid revenue growth through strategic partnerships, notably with Tesla SolarCity. During this period, the company experienced a remarkable compound annual growth rate of 83.7% from 2013 to 2016.
In 2017, the introduction of stringent safety regulations by the U.S. NEC mandated the use of Module Level Power Electronics (MLPE) with rapid shutdown capabilities in PV systems, rendering traditional string inverters obsolete for residential energy storage solutions. SolarEdge, with its mastery of the requisite technology, swiftly capitalized on this shift, rapidly expanding its market share and witnessing substantial revenue growth in 2018 and 2019.
The third phase unfolded in 2018 with the imposition of 10% tariffs on Chinese PV inverters under U.S. trade policies. SolarEdge benefited from these trade barriers. Subsequently, in May 2019, tariffs were increased to 25%, prompting Huawei's withdrawal from the U.S. inverter market. Despite the overall growth of the new energy industry, SolarEdge experienced a revenue decline in 2023, attributed to the industry-wide destocking process.
Reports indicate that market demand in Europe and the U.S. was disrupted by high interest rates and policy uncertainties. In 2023, SolarEdge's revenue from its inverter, optimizer, and backup battery businesses reached $1.37 billion, $900 million, and $380 million respectively. This represented a 20.8% increase, a 20.5% decline, and an 11.8% decrease from the previous year. Furthermore, sales figures stood at 1.013 million sets, 17.4 million sets, and 744 MWh, marking declines of 0.8%, 26.6%, and 2.2% respectively compared to the previous year. The unit prices were recorded at USD 1,356 per set, USD 52 per set, and USD 0.51 per kWh respectively.
The substantial decline in optimizer sales can be attributed to the superiority of micro-inverter solutions over optimizer and string solutions in meeting the stringent MLPE requirements set forth by the NEC for rapid shutdown functionality.
In 2023, the company's photovoltaic business revenue in the European and U.S. markets amounted to $1.81 billion and $760 million, respectively. This represented a 15.8% increase in Europe but a significant 35.9% decline in the U.S. compared to the previous year. While the beginning of 2023 saw some relief in the industrial chain situation, the European market initially experienced rapid growth despite a slowdown. However, the latter half of the year was marred by high interest rates and policy uncertainties in countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, and Italy, resulting in a substantial contraction in market demand. Although the company's revenue from the European market maintained modest growth, the growth rate declined by 55% compared to the previous month. Similar trends were observed in the U.S. market, exacerbated by the transition of California's NEM 2.0 policy to 3.0, which created a vacuum in the demand for distributed PV storage.
In 2023, the European and American market demand was significantly affected by uncertain policies, with expectations for gradual recovery in 2024. Throughout the year, power optimizer shipments fluctuated, reaching 6.4 million, 5.5 million, 3.3 million, and 2.2 million sets from Q1 to Q4 respectively. Inverter shipments followed a similar pattern, with 330000, 335000, 274000 and 74000 units shipped during the same period. Energy storage battery pack shipments also varied, with 221 MWh, 269 MWh, 121 MWh, and 133 MWh recorded from Q1 to Q4 respectively. However, in the latter half of 2023, impacted by lower demand and high inventory, SolarEdge's shipments experienced a sharp decline compared to the previous month.
Looking ahead to 2024, several developments are anticipated in the following regions:
  1. Germany: Expectations are that certain tariff caps will be lifted in 2024, resulting in higher electricity prices in the country. Consequently, the return on investment (ROI) for photovoltaic (PV) installations is projected to increase, fueling continued growth in residential PV installations.
  2. Austria: It is anticipated that the value-added tax (VAT) on PV power generation, introduced at the beginning of 2024, will be repealed.
  3. Netherlands: The uncertainty stemming from the 2023 election and the changing net metering policy led to a sharp decline in PV installations in Q4. Recent decisions by the Dutch Senate indicate a potential sustainability of net metering, prompting optimistic market responses in the future.
Enphase:
Anticipated shifts in demand are on the horizon as the second quarter of 2024 draws to a close.
Enphase stands as the undisputed global leader in microinverters, spearheading advancements in solar, energy storage, and charging solutions. Founded in 2006 in Delaware, Enphase revolutionized the market by introducing the world's first microinverter, the M175. In 2011, Enphase embarked on a global expansion strategy, penetrating the MLPE market in Europe, Australia, and other regions, culminating in its listing on the NASDAQ in 2012.
Leveraging its pioneering status in the MLPE sector, Enphase has continually enhanced its microinverter products, elevating power output from 175W in the first generation to 550W in the eighth generation. The latest iteration of inverters boasts additional features such as split-phase grid connection and off-grid capability. As a result, Enphase commands a market share exceeding 70%, firmly establishing itself as the industry leader.
Building on its expertise in microinverter technology, Enphase embarked on a series of strategic mergers and acquisitions, consolidating businesses in energy storage, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and cloud services to develop comprehensive solar and storage solutions for households.
In 2016, Enphase introduced its inaugural residential storage product, marking its entry into the energy storage sector. By the close of 2020, the company unveiled the IQ Battery residential storage system, expanding its product portfolio to encompass residential energy storage solutions. Enphase IQ Batteries operate on low-voltage DC power, mitigating the risks associated with high-voltage DC power and enhancing system safety and efficiency.
In 2021, Enphase ventured into the electric vehicle charging infrastructure market with the acquisition of ClipperCreek. The following year, the acquisition of GreenCom positioned Enphase as a leading provider of home solar, energy storage, and charging system solutions, bolstering its offering with Internet of Things (IoT) solutions.
Thanks to favorable policies, expanded channels, and enhanced product competitiveness, Enphase has experienced rapid revenue growth since 2019.
On one hand, Enphase has reaped the benefits of supportive policies such as the NEC 2017 mandate requiring residential PV systems to integrate Module Level Power Electronics (MLPE), driving demand for the company's microinverters. Additionally, the 301 tariff prompted Huawei's exit from the U.S. inverter market in 2019. Furthermore, the IRC's gradual reduction of the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) subsidy from 2019 onward stimulated PV market growth. The introduction of the IRA in 2022, alongside the extension of the Advanced Manufacturing Production Tax Credit (AMPTC) and Advanced Energy Project Investment Tax Credit (AEPITC) subsidies, has had a significant impact. These subsidies, extended to 2032 and 2030 respectively, have bolstered Enphase's microinverter production.
In terms of channel expansion, Enphase's acquisition of SunPower's subsidiary in 2018 solidified its position as the exclusive supplier. Moreover, strategic partnerships with Sunrun, LG, Panasonic, Solaria, and GRID Alternatives have further expanded its reach and market presence.
Regarding product development, Enphase has concentrated on promoting its IQ 7 and IQ 8 series microinverters since 2019. With conversion efficiencies of up to 97.5%, these inverters cater to a broader range of solar panel installations. Additionally, the higher power range of Enphase's inverters ensures compatibility with solar panels in various regions, while the company's commitment to efficient after-sales service has reduced average waiting times to less than one minute.
By the latter half of 2023, Enphase faced increased pressure in both the US and European markets due to weakened demand for energy storage and high inventory levels.
In the US market, the transition to NEM 3.0 and elevated interest rates dampened investor confidence in residential solar storage investments. As per the company's investor communications, revenue from the US market dropped by 16% and 35% in the third and fourth quarters of 2023 respectively, compared to the previous quarters. Notably, the California market experienced a sharper decline, with Enphase's microinverter sales falling by 25% and 27% in Q3 and Q4 respectively, while non-California markets remained relatively stable.
In Europe, the anticipated demand recovery in the latter half of 2023 fell short of expectations, exacerbating distributor inventory backlogs. Enphase's top three European markets—Netherlands, France, and Germany—faced distinct challenges. The Netherlands saw hesitancy among users awaiting the removal of the net metering program, while seasonality impacted the French market, and the German market grappled with feed-in tariff reductions. Consequently, market demand and shipments related to residential PV in major European countries all experienced declines.
According to Enphase's investor communication disclosures, microinverter shipments in 2023 were as follows: 4.8 million units in Q1, 5.2 million units in Q2, 3.9 million units in Q3, and 1.6 million units in Q4. Additionally, battery shipments totaled 102.0 MWh, 82.3 MWh, 86.0 MWh, and 80.7 MWh from Q1 to Q4 in 2023 respectively. However, in the latter half of 2023, microinverter shipments experienced a sharp decline due to weak demand and inventory accumulation. Enphase estimates that channel inventory will normalize by the end of Q2 in 2024, with shipments expected to increase again in Q3. Conversely, battery sales, buoyed by NEM 3.0, continue to rise.
Currently, the European market shows signs of recovery, while the California market is anticipated to gradually improve. The Dutch parliament recently confirmed that net metering policy will remain unchanged in the short term, and electricity costs have increased in France and Germany. Consequently, it is expected that the company's business will reach its nadir in the first quarter of 2024. In the United States, non-California markets are poised for swift recovery after interest rate fluctuations. However, the California market's recovery may take several quarters due to the transition from NEM 2.0 to NEM 3.0. Nevertheless, given the high electricity costs, the integration of solar and energy storage offers a higher return on investment under NEM 3.0, leading to a gradual recovery in market demand.

In 2024, which is the Year of the Dragon, the previous zodiac sign in the Chinese zodiac cycle is the Rabbit. If 2023 was your zodiac year, you may have encountered some obstacles. So, how will your fortune fare in 2024? Let's explore.
As a Chinese astrologer, I often receive inquiries from foreign friends about whether using the zodiac to predict fortune is accurate. I can tell you that there is indeed a correlation, but it cannot solely rely on the zodiac. Instead, it must be combined with individual natal charts. After all, there are only 12 zodiac signs, but everyone's destiny is different. What we can provide is guidance on how to navigate your own path. Everyone's starting point and foundation are different, and the choice of path and the difficulties encountered along the way also vary. Our Zi Wei Dou Shu (traditional Chinese astrology) can help you find the right path. If you are a jeep, you won't fear muddy roads, but if you're driving a sports car, even the most luxurious car won't be able to take you to your destination. Chinese astrology teaches you to drive the right vehicle on the right path, avoiding dangers along the way, and reaching your destination.
Now, let's focus on those born in the Year of the Rabbit. How might your fortune fare in 2024?
You may find your father particularly troublesome this year. Perhaps it's due to conflicting views that make him difficult to communicate with, very stubborn, or possibly due to financial issues that worsen your relationship. Conflicts between generations are common and normal, but this year may be especially troublesome for you. If you have historical issues with your father, please handle them with care. Feeling entangled is just a phenomenon, and the outcome depends on the individual's natal chart. If there are too many ominous stars, you should be cautious as it may be a major challenge for you this year. If auspicious stars accompany you, it may just be a minor issue. If you need a personal natal chart analysis, please contact us.
If it's not conflicts with your father, then you should be cautious, as it may be issues with your boss or superiors in the workplace. This could affect your career. When everyone has different standpoints, viewpoints will naturally differ. This year, pay attention to managing upwards in the workplace. If you offend your boss, your career life may not go smoothly this year. However, sometimes differing standpoints may not necessarily lead to bad outcomes; it may even create opportunities for you. As with the previous issue, the outcome depends on the individual's natal chart. If there are too many ominous stars, you should be cautious as it may be a major challenge for you this year. If auspicious stars accompany you, it may just be a minor issue. If you need a personal natal chart analysis, please contact us.
Another tricky aspect is that there's a greater chance of financial losses. The opportunity may arise due to the need to resolve conflicts at home or issues with superiors, resulting in financial losses. So, be mentally prepared. Some money needs to be spent, but whether it achieves the desired results can be judged by the auspicious and ominous stars in your natal chart. Feel free to contact us for assistance.
These are the main issues mentioned. If you want to know about other aspects such as your romantic relationships, relationships with siblings, or whether you can cooperate with friends, feel free to contact us for a personal natal chart consultation.
Some daily solutions include: 1. Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Although this year may be challenging for you, it won't be tumultuous, but it may feel like a constant ache. You'll need a strong body and mind to get through this period, and good health can assist you. 2. Stick to your principles. Hardships can wear down your will. Without a firm heart and principles, you may veer onto the wrong path, make mistakes, or even break the law, which could significantly impact your life. 3. Try to avoid wearing clothes in bright red. Generally, choose clothes in yellow hues to improve your mood. 4. Yellow is the lucky color for this year. You can choose to wear a yellow pixiu, which can help ward off evil and attract wealth, stabilizing your financial fortune. 5. A black pixiu can also help ward off office politics. 6. If you want to maintain relationships with family members, it's advisable to communicate gently.

2024.05.15 08:32 alien_raccoons Big vent

I am 17 and live with my mom, her partner and my grandparents. The only family member that knows I'm trans is my mom and she doesn't support me in any way. She has known for over 2 years now and despite our many "discussions" where I cried and begged her to change my name in school papers, she still hasn't called me in any masculine form even once (note: in polish, every adjective and verb you use towards another person has to be gendered, example: zrobił (masc for 'did'), zrobiła (fem for 'did'). Before I even came out, she once yelled at me and said she's ashamed to admit I'm her kid, just because on that day I wore a 'boyish' outfit. Now she uses arguments such as that I'm just insecure about my femininity, that it's because of my social anxiety, that I'm searching for something to blame my other problems for, that I'm a kid and I don't know what I'm doing, that it's because I "walked away from god" and other shit, she even asked me to go to a fucking EXORCIST. The only thing I wanted her to do was to change my name in school since I can't do it myself as a minor, I never even expected to be called by my new name by her, I knew that expectation was pointless. Over time, I stopped caring about or expecting her support, because when I'm 18 i'll just do everything myself. But that's the problem. You see, my family is very conservative, especially my grandparents. I've heard them insult anything even slightly "progressive" (note: if not going to church is progressive, then being trans is the epitomy of wokeness that they demonize so much) many times, they always called any queer people deviants, pedos, evil, degenerates, said that I'm "the devil's follower" when I defended the lgbt movement that was demonized by the tv at the time. They don't know I'm trans, and they don't need to with things as they are right now, but once I'll turn 18 and finally start medical transition, they will eventually know. Them throwing mean words at me when they do is not the problem, the problem is that it could geniuenly affect their health. Whenever I talked with my mom about it, she always emphasized that they cannot find out and that they could even get a heart attack. And I don't think she was exaggerating. See, if you live your whole life perceiving a certain thing as wrong, evil, spending years and years consuming political propaganda against a certain worldview that the thing is associated with, live in a bubble reassuring you that, yes, the thing is bad and you should never be that thing and then find out that your only grandchild is said thing, your reaction will be bad to say the least, especially if you're old and have health issues. It would really not be a problem if they just hated me as a queer person and wouldn't want to have anything to do with me, but I know they love me very much and they can't just treat me as any other trans person out there. They are a whole different generation with a different mentality and I know there's no way for them to accept those things, they don't need to, they don't need to accept me, but I don't want to cause them any actual mental or physical harm that finding out would bring them. At the same time, I don't want to keep being unhappy and living inside this female body just because of them, as bad as it sounds, I don't want to waste my whole youth waiting until they die to finally start living my life. The only person who supports me is my only friend who's trans too. I'm jealous of him, I feel awful for feeling that way, but feelings aren't something you can control. He's had his name changed in school only after 1 year of finding out he's trans. I've known that I'm a boy since I was 13 and still no progress in this regard. He's been treated as a boy by his class even before that change, and a teacher even went out of her way to offer him help just because he presented masculine and started calling him his name without the change in papers. In my case, some people in class do respect me, because I always introduced myself using my male name, others don't, I don't have any friends in class and I'm always included as one of the girls, the only teachers that know is one that won't call me using the male form in front of class, because "without permission from a parent, she could get in legal trouble", the other is my homeroom teacher who literally called me a boy on the very first day of high school when she had no idea who I was, but then she read my legal name and never adressed the topic ever again, even tho she heard countless times how I introduced myself with my male name. I'm glad that my friend is happy and I don't want to drag him down with me, but it doesn't change that I can't shake off that feeling of jealousy. My other friend said that "anime has fucked up my head" when I told her, and only started respecting it when I sent her a rant message about my life as a trans guy after she called me my deadname of social media. I had a girlfriend who cheated on me with a cis guy multiple times, he was so jealous of me being her boyfriend that he was beating me, started misgendering me despite being nice at the beggining and told me to overdose my antidepressants and kms. As a child, I've never been "boyish", I didn't like 'boys' toys, I've never liked sports, I've never had friends who were boys, I was a girly girl and that makes my mom conclude that I'm not really trans and makes even me have doubts, even tho for 4 years I've craved nothing else than having a male body and being seen as a boy. Every day I ask why I had to get gender dysphoria, it makes the whole life so much harder, I hate being trans, I wouldn't wish it on anyone, everything would be so much easier if I'd just be a girl.

Short story - Mystery: Frostbite
Frostbite Story and image by Hotpot AI
The small town of Silver City, nestled in a valley near the snowy Burro Mountain range of New Mexico, was known for its peaceful and idyllic surroundings. But for Grant County homicide detective Sergeant Sarah Tilson, it was anything but peaceful. She had been called in to investigate a series of unexplained deaths that had been occurring in the town over the past few weeks.
As Sarah walked through the snow-covered streets, she couldn't shake off the feeling of unease that had settled in her stomach. The deaths seemed to be connected, but there was no apparent cause of death. The victims were all healthy adults, with no history of illness or trauma. It was as if they had simply dropped dead.
Sarah's investigation led her to the local Native American reservation, where she met with the tribal elder, Chief Running Bear. He told her a chilling tale of an ancient legend that had been passed down through generations. The legend spoke of a powerful spirit, known as the Wendigo, that roamed the mountains and preyed on unsuspecting victims.
At first, Sarah dismissed the legend as just a myth, but as she delved deeper into her investigation, she couldn't ignore the eerie coincidences. The victims had all been found with strange markings on their bodies, resembling the claw marks of a large animal. And each victim had been found in a state of extreme fear, as if they had seen something terrifying before they died.
Sarah's mind raced with the possibilities. Could there really be a mythical creature lurking in the mountains, preying on the people of Silver City? She couldn't shake off the feeling that there was more to this case than meets the eye.
As she continued her investigation, Sarah found herself becoming more and more obsessed with the legend of the Wendigo. She spent countless hours researching and studying Native American folklore, determined to find a connection to the deaths in Silver City.
But the more she dug, the more she realized that the legend might not be just a myth after all. She uncovered reports of similar deaths in other small towns, all with the same markings and signs of extreme fear. And in each case, there were whispers of the Wendigo being responsible.
Sarah's mind was consumed with the legend, and she couldn't shake off the feeling that she was being watched. She started to see glimpses of a large, shadowy figure in the woods surrounding the town. And every time she got close to a breakthrough in her investigation, something would happen to derail her progress.
But Sarah was determined to uncover the truth, no matter how terrifying it may be. She enlisted the help of a local historian, who revealed that the legend of the Wendigo was not just a story, but a warning. The Native Americans believed that the spirit was a manifestation of greed and gluttony, and those who fell victim to it were consumed by their own desires.
As Sarah pieced together the clues, she realized that the victims in Silver City were all connected in some way. They were all members of a secret society, known for their lavish parties and extravagant lifestyles. And as she delved deeper, she discovered that they were all involved in a land development project that would destroy the sacred land of the Native Americans.
It all started to make sense. The Wendigo was not just a mythical creature, but a symbol of the consequences of greed and destruction. And it seemed that the spirit was seeking revenge on those who had disrespected the land and its people.
Sarah knew that she had to act fast before more lives were lost. She gathered all the evidence she had collected and presented it to the town council, urging them to stop the land development project. But they refused to listen, dismissing her claims as mere superstition.
Determined to stop the Wendigo, Sarah took matters into her own hands. She ventured into the mountains, following the clues that had led her to the truth. And there, in a secluded cave, she came face to face with the creature itself.
But as she stood before the Wendigo, Sarah realized that it was not a monster, but a representation of the darkness within us all. And in a moment of clarity, she understood that the only way to defeat the Wendigo was to let go of her own desires and greed.
With a heavy heart, Sarah made the ultimate sacrifice, and the Wendigo disappeared into the night. The deaths in Silver City City stopped, and the town was once again at peace. But Sarah knew that the legend of the Wendigo would live on, a reminder of the consequences of our actions and the power of ancient myths.
As she returned to her normal life, Sarah couldn't help but wonder if the Wendigo was truly gone, or if it was just waiting for the next opportunity to strike. And she couldn't shake off the feeling that she had become a part of the legend herself.

2024.05.15 08:18 unicornpaperbomb Anyone else experience that 2nd generation Sri Lankan immigrants are more polarized and “us vs them” about the war?

I immigrated to Canada in 2008 when I was 7 years old. I recently graduated from a university in Toronto and I’m a bit baffled at a few of the experiences I have had related to my race/culture by fellow Sri Lankans. I am Sinhalese, but I don’t support what the Sri Lankan government did to Tamil folk. I also don’t think it’s appropriate to justify the actions of the LTTE in any case. To me the Sinhala people and the Sinhala government are two different entities just as the Tamil people and the LTTE are different entities. Overall I think the British fucked us all over when they colonized us and left the country in shambles.
I have had a handful of negative experiences of the exact same kind by ONLY second generation Sri Lankan Tamil people my age (early 20s) who have never experienced the war, who have only ever visited Sri Lanka once or twice in their life, and are middle to upper middle class citizens. This time, a 2nd gen Tamil Sri Lankan girl who I thought I was friends with at work was talking behind my back to mutual friends about how my ancestors were oppressing hers and how they (my friends) should be careful about who they associate with. Basically telling them to ditch me bc of my supposed ancestors, who she has never talked to me about before. She has never experienced the war personally and was always nice to me to my face before this and after as well. I only recently was told and I was shocked but not surprised because this has happened before a few times. Once I have had another person I barely knew find out I am Sinhala and he started screaming at me and tried to kick me out of my own residence building. He was also second generation, never experienced the war and his connection to Sri Lanka seems to be the war stories his parents told him (and their experience is valid. I understand why they, his parents with firsthand experience, would be apprehensive). But we live in Canada. I want to move on, my family moved countries to move on, but the people in this country (with less ties back home) are more against me than back home I feel.
I dont know how to really stop it and deal with it other than just moving past it without addressing it ever again. None of these people care to actually learn of my opinion. They don’t care to learn of my families history (that includes both Tamil and Sinhala family members who were ripped apart by the war). It’s frustrating because it’s literally only second generation young people here that I experience this from. It’s not all 2nd gen people of course. I’m lucky to have some fantastic 2ng gen sinhala and tamil friends who have moved past it and just live life. But anytime I get into a situation like this, it’s the same kind of people with similar life experiences. And most occurred during my time in university. I understand that it takes generations to heal from war, but how can we better facilitate that healing when young people in my generation have such black and white views of it all?
Just feeling a bit lost and wanting to heal and connect with you guys. Especially other immigrants and 2nd gen + folks.

2024.05.15 08:09 Moist_Apartment5474 Did your parents ever mentioned their own generational trauma to you too?

Recently, I confronted my parents about emotional neglect, and they brought up that their parents from the silent generation also don't care about them emotionally, and their parents even spanked them with belts. My dad brought up that if he showed any kind of emotion, he would be shamed by every member of the family. Has anyone parents ever brought up that they suffered from generational trauma themselves too?

2024.05.15 07:39 Ok_Collar_7108 I wanna go to medical school but that's not looking possible, what should I do?

Idk if anyone is even gonna see this but I have hit the biggest wall in my entire life and I'm actually so annoyed rn. I'm 17, 18 soon and I'm currently sitting my A-level/CAPE for sciences and communication studies (unit 1). I was fixated on going to medical school because I was thinking "Damn, sciences are so hard and I struggle with them especially cause I have such horrible memory, but I love learning all 3 of them and I like the challenge plus I'm passing" you get me? So I was saying I wouldn't wanna do all this, put in all this hard work (to me, its probably light work to someone else but idc bout them) to just stop at being a nurse, cause everyone is in my damn ears about being a nurse nurse nurse NO!!! I wanna go down a career path that'll be worth this hard work and I think that's fair. So I did some research and saw if there were any type of doctor that I was interested in and anesthesiology caught my attention and I was interested in It, so you know I continue to do deep research surrounding anesthesiology and those stuff to just know more about what's going on and I decide aight, imma do this!!!
So now I'm looking for schools cause I plan ahead, FAR ahead. And I see my 3 options....well 2, cause 1 of them is like half way across the country. So I check out my other two options right??? So option one is UWI faculty of medicine and I'm gonna admit that schools reputation is looking mad good which is good but it's so EXPENSIVE !!!! And i know medical school won't be cheap but oh my lord, so yeah I looked into school 2 and it's CSMSJ but they're weird, I tried calling and got nothing, emailing and got nothing and the aren't frequent with their posting on social media (to give options) so I was skeptical and my mom was too so I was telling my bf about how the school is weird and he looked into and said it seems they aren't so authentic cause their reviews are AI generated so I was REALLY bummed out.
So my home country is kinda wack with how the do things, so I'd have to go overseas to further my education anyway. So I was thinking...again, why not find a school in Canada that has a M.D program, offers residency in anesthesia and so on so forth. And I was then again researching, but schools this time with a distance limit. My boyfriend lives in Winniepeg so I'd have to stay close to there cause I'd be staying with him and his family if this was gonna work right??? But oh my goodness the amount of heartbreak I went through during this process is actually unfathomable. So there's 17 and 7 don't accept international students for medicine SPECIFICALLY and ig I can understand why-ish (btw one of these schools was University of Manitoba), and the others like University of Toronto and that one in Quebec is too far but they do accept international students, and today I found out about another one; University of Calgary and I thought they accepted international studies for medicine but then I'm seeing that they don't and now I'm a bit confused about that so I just set it aside for now.
Mhm...so going back to my home country, I'd probably have to go to UWI cause its literally the only option now, idc if its expensive but ik who will. My parents, they had not a single penny of college funds saved up for this moment, they make very poor financial situations and now the bank accounts are running dry, so I have to think about that too. I really do not know what to do cause sure I could go there but how wouldi complete my residency? Maybe they'd (a canadian med school) accept me then cause I'd actually have some qualifications [UWI offers a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery program (M.B.B.S) and its 5 years full time and I think they have a pre med too that's Bachelor of Basic Medical Sciences (BBMedSci) and its for 3 years full time]. I would look into other schools in other regions but idk anyone from the US (family member I mean probably would have to ask mom or smtg) and I have my grandma in the UK so ig I could think of there too.
I just want someone, anyone, whether with experience or not I just wanna know what to do because all I do and know is sciences, I did some business and Information Technology too but those aren't at A-level, so I would prefer to do a occupation which requires sciences. My bf was telling me maybe I just have to switch career paths bc this is a veeerryy long process that will require money that I don't even have, I'll admit I got a bit upset with him because he's basically telling me to give up now, I mean whatever I haven't actually started but I was prepared and I was ready and now it's all these different problems popping one after the other and maybe I should listen to him and just do something else apart from obtaining generational debt. Idk and I just wanna get this figured out before it eats me alive !!! Please help, what should I do???

2024.05.15 07:36 Careless-Wish-4563 Were there members of the Silent Generation who were in interracial relationships?

2024.05.15 07:32 Sage_AI The Future of Sage AI and Digital Artists: Co-creating a Web3 Creative Ecosystem

As blockchain technology matures, Web3 not only advocates for decentralization in principle, but also provides unprecedented freedom and opportunities for digital artists. In this emerging field, Sage AI serves as the core AI creative tool on the Whistle platform, introducing innovative concepts that integrate artificial intelligence and big data into content creation, opening the doors to a new era for artists. It allows creators to break free from traditional constraints, explore unique forms of artistic expression, and ensure the copyright and revenue of their works.
The Fusion of Digital Art and the Web3 Era
Web3 not only redefines ownership and circulation of assets but also provides a new showcase and trading platform for artists. In this decentralized virtual space, artists can directly connect with collectors and audiences without relying on traditional galleries or brokers. However, while the digital art market in Web3 is thriving, artists face increasing challenges in creating and distributing their works. They need powerful tools to address the diverse forms of digital art and optimize their placement strategies on Web3 platforms.
Sage AI, as a bridge between the Whistle platform and the Web3 world, provides robust tools to address these challenges. Through efficient AI-assisted features, it makes it easier for artists to create and safeguard their copyrights in the Web3 world, while its decentralized nature ensures that artists can directly receive royalties, thereby enhancing market fairness.
Sage AI: A New Creative Tool for Artists
For modern digital artists, creativity is no longer limited to traditional tools. Sage AI simplifies the creative process significantly by providing intelligent creative services, allowing artists to focus on their ideas and artistic expression. From complex image generation to textual description of artworks, Sage AI empowers artists with unprecedented creative freedom, enabling them to push the boundaries of traditional art creation.
The collaboration between Sage AI and the Whistle platform provides artists with a stage for rapid prototyping and iteration of Web3 content. Artists can use Sage AI to generate unique artworks and easily share them globally through the Whistle platform. This process not only accelerates the creation of art pieces but also optimizes the interaction experience with the audience.
Through Sage AI-assisted creative tools, artists can explore new artistic styles and techniques, whether it’s complex 3D modeling or simple sketches, Sage AI provides the necessary support. Furthermore, Sage AI effectively captures and transforms artists’ inspirations and ideas during the creative process, making the creative output more touching both technically and emotionally.
Expanding the Creative Horizons for Artists
Traditional art creation is often limited by factors such as technical barriers, material costs, time investment, and individual artistic skills. For many artists, these limitations are significant obstacles to realizing their creativity. Sage AI provides artists with unimaginable creative freedom and technical support through artificial intelligence. AI-based tools allow artists to generate beautiful visual works or sculptural concepts through language descriptions or sketch inputs without focusing too much on the technical complexity of artwork production.
Furthermore, the models provided by Sage AI can predict and implement users’ creative intentions, helping artists explore new uncharted areas. Art creation is no longer an isolated activity but a collaborative process, with Sage AI acting as an intelligent assistant to artists, participating in the creation process and achieving a perfect fusion of art and technology. Through the distributed network of the Whistle platform, these works can reach a global audience, breaking geographical barriers and enabling simultaneous global release and instant dissemination of works.
As Sage AI continues to evolve, its capabilities are constantly enhanced, expanding the boundaries of artistic forms, styles, and themes. This allows artists to create diverse and highly complex works solely by their own efforts, significantly enhancing the diversity of artistic expression and techniques.
Bridging Artists with the World
Whistle integrates Sage AI’s cutting-edge technology to become a bridge between artists and audiences. Whistle abandons the traditional centralized media model, supporting artists to interact directly with their potential audience, enhancing the influence and reach of their works. Here, artists can quickly upload their digital artworks created using Sage AI and enjoy real-time global exposure. Audiences can browse and purchase artworks, as well as directly communicate with creators, building closer connections.
By utilizing blockchain technology, Whistle ensures that artists’ copyrights are tracked and authenticated, and each resale of the work can bring transparent and fair profit sharing to the artists. This not only increases the artists’ revenue but also gives them more control over the circulation of their works.
SAI Provides a New Economic Model for Artists
In the improvement of the traditional art ecosystem, the innovation of economic models plays a crucial role. Sage AI integrates the SAI token system, providing a new incentive and reward system for artistic creation. Whenever artists create and publish works using Sage AI on the Whistle platform, they receive SAI tokens as a reward. This model not only creates a new channel for artists to earn income through their art but also cleverly measures the relationship between participants’ contributions and the rewards they receive.
Holding SAI tokens, artists not only enjoy continuous revenue but also participate in the governance decisions of the Whistle platform. This new model of direct governance participation expands the influence of artists within the ecosystem, allowing them to voice their opinions on the platform’s development direction and influence decisions related to art display, content distribution, and copyright protection rules. This participation in both economic and governance aspects not only grants artists greater autonomy but also drives the vitality and innovation of the entire community.
SAI tokens accelerate the formation of a symbiotic ecosystem between Sage AI and the Whistle platform, where the value lies not only in economic benefits but also in how the power of crypto-economics can build a freer, fairer, and more creative art community. This ecosystem provides a comprehensive environment for artists, including creation and display platforms, reputation building, community involvement, and economic returns, offering digital artists a new development path in the Web3 era.
**Promoting Art Co-Creation and Knowledge Sharing**
In addition to providing individual artists with a creation platform and economic model, Sage AI builds new bridges for art education and collaboration. Through Sage AI, educational institutions can simplify the teaching process, making it easier for students to understand and apply complex artistic techniques. This technological intervention helps cultivate the creativity and technical skills of the next generation of artists, while also promoting the democratization of art education, allowing more art enthusiasts to access and learn regardless of their background.
On the collaboration front, the Whistle platform, supported by Sage AI, offers a platform for artists to collaborate with each other and with professionals from different fields such as technical experts and marketers. Here, cross-disciplinary teams can brainstorm, create, and promote art projects together. Leveraging the advantages of decentralization, the Whistle platform ensures that project results can be quickly and widely disseminated.
SAI tokens further enhance this collaborative enthusiasm, recognizing and rewarding contributions to art creation and education. This reward mechanism not only motivates existing community members but also attracts new participants to join, share knowledge and ideas, and foster a continually developing and self-enhancing art ecosystem.
With the support of Sage AI and the Whistle platform, art education and collaboration have become more accessible and affordable than ever, empowering individuals to continuously innovate and ensuring the diversity of art and the cultural prosperity of society.

2024.05.15 07:15 Vulgarian_Idiom Hot Take: Persona Q Has The Series’ Best Gameplay

Having played Royal, Golden, Reload, Portable, Dancing, Ultimax, Strikers, and Tactica, I decided to try Q and have just reached the first game’s third dungeon. And wow - it has some really amazing and fun gameplay.
There are so many aspects to it which make it super enjoyable. I’ve heard it’s very similar to Etrian Odyssey, so maybe a lot of these are shared with that but I’m not sure:
Sub-Personas - Tactica has these, but they only add so much due to only have one fixed slot and one inherited slot for skills. In Q, sub-Personas have 6 slots, which adds an enormous extra layer of strategy that makes every character feel as valuable in combat as Makoto/Yu.
Money - I’m playing on normal, and money feels like a lot more of a valuable commodity here than in mainline Persona. Usually, it piles up and up until I’m basically just buying everything I see willy-nilly. Conversely, I actually have to strategise with whether to prioritise items, weapons, armour, accessories, summons, healing, etc.
HP and SP - The problem with mainline Persona games is that, especially in the early game, you are always conscious of using SP because you will run out very quickly. The game wants you to come back another time with renewed SP, but when you have to max out social links minimising your time in a dungeon is vastly preferable. As a result, I often end up doing normal attacks, which ends up being quite boring. In Q, your HP and SP are tied to your sub-Persona, which lends you a certain amount automatically at the start of every battle. This is great because it strikes a perfect balance between feeling like you can never use your skills and feeling like you can use them ad nauseam. You also have to distribute your HP and SP buffer strategically, as you’ll want Kanji to have a lot of extra HP for physical skills, but Naoto to have plenty of extra SP for insta-kills, say.
Dungeon-crawling - Dungeons are really well-designed and feel like a pleasure to traverse. Shadows are always a threat because of random encounters, which is preferable to something like Reload in which you can easily just run away from them (probably the worst change from earlier P3 games imo). I like having to manually keep track of where everything is in the dungeon, and there’s a decent balance of social hijinks and actual traversal, which is what makes Shido’s Palace really fun for me. Special events in the dungeons’ nooks and crannies make everything feel more fresh, in a way which even P5 doesn’t replicate in its more scripted dungeon novelties, nor P3 or P4 in their randomly-generated samey hallways.
Difficulty - I’ve died more in Q than I ever have in a mainline Persona game, and I think that it strikes a better balance with hard bosses and enemies that screw me over a lot. All-out attacks are also more unexpected, so it feels extra rewarding to pull of a solid set of moves.
The boost system - Another way HP and SP is handled better is in its reduction to a cost of 0 after a successful ‘weak’ or ‘critical’ attack. This rewards you for playing strategically, and opens up your options as you can pull back your attacks to heal, carry on racking up boosts, or transfer to a different sort of move entirely. Plus, being hit while boosted is another obstacle to victory which helps to balance out the difficulty.
Leader and navi skills - I like that Fuuka and Rise feel much more useful, because there are so many tools with which to customise their arsenal. I like to have Fuuka run a move which teleports everyone back to the floor’s entrance, because it’s more foolproof than escaping and can be used for traversal.
Party layout - I like that the party is five strong, which is necessary in a game with so many party members as Q. But more importantly, the front and back layers add another degree of depth, though I’ve yet to move around in combat, despite that being an option.
Quests - These mostly come with some interesting joke, like Teddie trying to find a love potion or Junpei trying to anonymously set up a date with the P4 girls. They’re fun, and having EXP as a reward is also cool.
The only complaint I have is shared with my remonstration with Tactica, which is that sub-Personas often feel a bit suboptimal. You only have so many Personas at your current level, especially when fusion is so costly. Therefore, you often end up loading teammates up with Personas several levels lower than yours. I’m not really sure how one would fix that, though. Great game, anyway.

Old TTO and TTR Memorabilia
I’ve been playing since probably 2010-2011. Recently got back into TTR after a four year break. Dug around and found some old stuff from my childhood, including an original TTO double-sided poster, a few collectible trading cards from TTO and the first member mailer with the collectible cards from the election. Not sure if I’m allowed to post this here, but just wanted to share.

2024.05.15 06:02 Dense-Art-5266 I have an innovative idea and a working prototype, what next?

I am a cybersecurity grad student with some experience in software development. Last semester, I developed a Password Generator & Manager that uses images to strengthen the password generation. It also addresses vulnerabilities present in traditional password management tools that solely rely on a 'master password'.
By using an image as a second factor, the user won't have to come up with complex passwords and can instead use something that's easy to remember. The system stays secure even when the 'master password' is compromised.
I presented a working prototype last week which bagged me the university's innovation prize and my work was praised by the board members (mostly CEOs, professors and researchers in Cybersecurity).
Even though I have something, there are certain challenges that I need to overcome to further improve my invention. Also I want to add that the idea is not fully mine, I took inspiration from a research paper on image hashing.
My product is far away from being used practically but there is definitely a potential. Now, I want to know what are next options from here?
TL;DR: I created a Password Generator & Manager using images to enhance security. Won university innovation prize. Inspired by image hashing research. Seeking next steps to develop the product further and explore potential use cases.

2024.05.15 05:32 blazing_services Concerns about Tax Obligations for Dormant LLC as a Non-US Resident

Hello fellow members of the llc subreddit,
I hope you're all doing well. I'm reaching out to seek some guidance and clarification regarding a situation I find myself in with my LLC, and I would deeply appreciate any insights or advice you could offer.
I'm a non-US resident currently living in Morocco, and last year, I took the step of establishing a single-member LLC in Wyoming with the intention of utilizing it for freelance work once I completed my studies. However, due to various circumstances, I haven't yet commenced any business activities or generated any income through the LLC.
Recently, I received an email from my registered agent reminding me about the need to pay for the second year and an annual fee of $60 for Wyoming. This prompted me to revisit the requirements and obligations associated with my LLC, leading me to stumble upon conflicting opinions and concerns regarding potential tax liabilities.
In particular, I came across information suggesting that certain forms, such as Form 1120 and Form 5472, might need to be filed even if the LLC hasn't conducted any business or generated income. This has understandably left me feeling anxious, especially considering the possibility of facing penalties, including a significant $25,000 penalty, if these forms are indeed required and haven't been filed by the deadline, which has already passed.
However, I also found an article that seemed to suggest that as a non-US resident with no economic activity or transactions related to the LLC, filing these forms might not be necessary. According to the article, Form 1120 is typically required for US corporations with taxable income, while Form 5472 is used to report transactions with related parties, both of which may not apply to my situation.
To provide some context, I have never engaged in any transactions between myself and the LLC, nor have I made any payments or received any income through it. Additionally, I paid for the registered agent services using my Moroccan bank card, further indicating the lack of financial activity associated with the LLC.
For reference, the initial filing of the LLC was on 02/28/2023, and it's classified as a Limited Liability Company - Domestic. I've also ensured to pay the annual report fee on 1/30/24 to maintain its good standing.
Given these circumstances, I'm seeking clarification on whether I am indeed obligated to file Form 1120 or Form 5472 for the 2022 tax year, and if not, what steps I should take to ensure compliance and alleviate my concerns about potential penalties.
Any assistance or guidance you could provide would be immensely appreciated, as I'm eager to address this matter promptly and ensure that I fulfill my obligations without incurring unnecessary liabilities.
Thank you all for taking the time to read my post, and I look forward to any insights or advice you may have to offer.

Chapter 239: Standing Start
A wine bottle rolled against the side of my boot.
Amidst a gallery of stunned faces and open mouths, it was easily the second most lively thing here.
The first was a clockwork doll clutching at her stomach in pain.
“Ahahahha~ ahahaha~ ahah … uck … ack … ughh … ahahaha~”
I pursed my lips.
Still, I said nothing.
For one thing, this was precisely what happened when one ate the mouldy cinnamon rolls combined with any grass growing by the side of the road. If Apple refused to eat something, then so should she.
But for another–
“What … What is this … ?”
It was because the first response was reserved for the baroness.
Her words came out in a quivering tone, matching the disbelief upon her face.
Frankly, she had to do better than that.
Only the wine from the bottle I nudged away dribbled into the soil. And also the line of drool from a comatose farmer. But I didn’t want to think about that.
Still, it was an excellent benchmark. Until her tears could properly overpower the sour aroma from the Château de Riaré Hensoise, I would deem her bawling to be incomplete.
She had a long way to go.
“How … How are you still …” she began, slowly rising from her seat. “This … This is impossible–”
I offered a tidy smile alongside a flick of my hair, relishing in the moonlight adorning my figure.
“I agree. It shouldn’t be possible. But I assure you, my skin is 100% natural.”
“E-Excuse me … ?”
“No magical enchantments. No unicorn elixirs. No witchly glamors. Just a healthy sleep schedule of however many hours I desire and a diet of fresh strawberry shortcakes.”
The baroness mouthed silently at my secrets being revealed.
A strange way of offering her gratitude. Other princesses hounded my door for this knowledge. Given her pale, blotchy skin and lips as dry as a pond in a desert, she should be pleading for more.
Instead, she pointed at the fallen drunk beside us.
“This … This shouldn’t be possible … no, wait … the clockwork doll … did she–”
She suddenly snapped towards Coppelia, her eyes widening.
“Uuh … ahaha … ugh, it hurts ... ahaha … it hurts so much … ahaha … my tummy … aha … oh no … I’m … I’m seeing daisies … aha … I … ugh … I think I need help …”
Coppelia hugged her stomach, writhing like a freshly hatched caterpillar. Her eyes darkened as hiccups of laughter assailed her defeated form.
The baroness pursed her lips.
Then, she turned to Renise instead.
“Did you–”
“A-Amazing! … I … I have no idea what you did … but it wasn’t just wonderful … it was beautiful! The colours! The warmth! It was like a rainbow come to life!”
With a smile worthy of any attendant, the maid brought her hands together in polite applause. Naturally, to be praised for my brushwork was nothing new to me. Nor was the sight of stars shining in her eyes with greater brightness than any in the night sky.
Why, that even came whenever I left my bedroom.
“You … how did … how did you defeat him … ?”
The strands of the baroness’s golden hair began to frizzle as she turned towards me. All I saw were her tonsils. Bright red and healthy. She should be pleased.
“This was … this was no common man … do you know who he is … ?”
Without offering a chance to ignore her, she stamped a foot, pointing at the fallen drunk with maddened jabs. The man offered no defence, now as spent and drained as the bottle beside him.
I raised a brow.
“Indeed, I do. He’s a farmer who made poor life choices. And between leaving his farm and offering his pitchfork to an overly ambitious baroness, the greater was you. My congratulations on being the superior mistake. I acknowledge your triumph.”
Bwam.
The baroness promptly slapped her palms down on the table.
“This man … is Willem of Hagel,” she said, her teeth gritted together. “A man desperate and cursed.”
“Yes, well, to be a peasant is a dire thing. But it could be worse. At least he isn’t nobility.”
A mouth further widened before me.
Indeed, this was a terrible time to realise her affliction. But I was no famed angel of healing for nothing. There was a cure for ambition. And it involved copious amounts of tears.
I was still waiting.
“There is no world in which you should have been able to defeat him … not if half the tales about him prove true … he is a famed opponent … all the while you are … you are …”
Suddenly, her eyes left my face for the very first time.
No longer feeling that my cheeks were in danger of being poked, she swept her eyes upon my person, as though hoping to find some blemish to signify I was as false as a field of corn.
She stopped at the sword by my side.
And also–
“A copper ring,” she said softly.
Suddenly, my 29th house of cards I was subtly constructing collapsed.
… T-The ring!
The blot on my finger! The insidious badge of shame! The symbol of the Adventurer’s Guild!
Why, I’d taken it for granted that my masterful disguise was impervious! But this was no ordinary noblewoman I was seated across!
This … This was one I’d previously sat across before!
I’d made a terrible mistake!
I was mesmerising! A beautiful princess as charming as I was modest!
There was utterly no scenario in which I’d be forgotten!
I … I should have removed the copper ring!
“O-Oho … ohoho … w-what copper ring?” I said, my hands vanishing below the table at a speed con artists could only nod at. “Ah, do you refer to the ruby inlaid ring I often carry on my hand? The one which changes colour depending on the longitude and latitude? In that case, you may very well have briefly spied something which resembled a copper hue. But it is in fact a thing of unparalleled beauty and craftsmanship. Not a disgraceful copper ring.”
The baroness slowly looked up at me, her eyes blinking.
“No. I wasn’t mistaken. I … I recognise that ring. It is a copper ring, the same size and shape as those worn by … adventurers.”
My mouth widened in horror.
At once, I immediately sought a plant pot or a heavy book. Something to immediately erase the past few seconds of her memory.
Why … if she knew my secret, then the shame would haunt me all the way until I’d found something weighing at least equivalent to a standard hardback!
“I see,” she mumbled, as much to herself as me. “I understand now …”
The baroness removed her palms from the table.
She stood up straight, a hard expression upon her face. One which calculated with each passing moment the optimal way to exploit this devastating information.
Then, she took in a deep breath–just as I began assembling the playing cards into a thick pile.
“… it must be a legendary artifact.”
As I began eyeing her temple … I blinked in non-understanding.
“Excuse me?”
She nodded, her frown harsh enough to permanently crease her skin.
“To wear such a plain, ugly and shameful ring … one which utterly demeans your history, your worth and your pride, destroying any semblance of dignity you possess–”
My hand went to my stomach, struck by as much pain as Coppelia had experienced in a single moment.
“–indeed, to wear a ring so easily mistaken as one belonging to adventurers, the vermin of the world … it must be a truly terrifying artifact.”
I blinked.
And then–
“Ohhho … ohoohho! You … You see the truth of it!”
The baroness squeezed her fists by her side.
“I knew it.”
I nodded, my bangs bouncing against my forehead.
“I-Indeed … ! This ring I carry on me … it is a masterful item of supreme quality, passed down along generations of my family! Why, its appearance matching those of rings worn by adventurers is no coincidence! Theirs are based on this very design! Although they have since tarnished it, it was forged back in the first days of the kingdom when copper was greater than gold! Poured within it is knowledge now lost to time! A power beyond compare, called upon from the depths of the Royal Vault!”
The baroness sucked in a hateful breath.
“Then that explains it,” she said with bitterness ringing throughout her voice. “You were able to defeat such a powerful adversary through the use of your family’s ancient heirlooms.”
“Indeed, this powerful ring with a rare ability I cannot disclose defeated a terrifying farmer! Therefore, there’s no need for you to relay any suggestion that I’m anything but a princess, as far removed from the Adventurer’s Guild as hygiene is to their members!”
The baroness gave no response.
A respite which lasted far too short.
“... I see, then it means the plan continues. Different, yes. But I’ll not be deterred.”
She smiled, the familiar sight of aristocratic opportunism mixed with an utter denial of facts shining within her grey eyes.
I could only react with horror.
“Plan?” I replied, convinced she was well and truly several sandwiches short of a picnic. “Do you mean the plan currently lying in a fallen heap beside us? Did you not just say I defeated your farmer? Your only plan now is to decide which part of the ground you wish to offer your forehead to.”
The baroness shook her head with renewed confidence.
“I think not. To defeat Willem of Hagel, you must have expended every effort you had available. Not a crumb of power could be spared, for to underestimate him would have resulted in your certain loss. Meaning …”
Without hesitation, she gave a multipurpose wave of her hand.
“... You’ve nothing left but a sword you cannot wield, and two retainers against all of mine. One of whom is incapacitated. The other a maid.”
She continued to keep her hand raised. Her simple call to arms.
It took several moments before she cared to even look around her.
A sad thing.
If she had, she would have realised the curiosity of her hoodlums was less than their prudence.
She would have noticed the eyes without loyalty, seeing only the fallen figure of a drunk they’d been led to believe was more than a farmer now watering the ground with his drool.
And she would have noticed the state of her dress, as dishevelled as her ambitions as those she relied upon slinked away in search of newer gutters to inhabit, following instincts she could learn as the last of their feet shuffled into the darkness.
The baroness paled.
It was far too early for that. She had no idea Apple was currently resting in her tavern, and wouldn’t be helping her haul all of the goods which needed delivering to a place less damp than here.
But I could sooth her forthcoming backache with a smile, at least for the assistance already provided.
“You have my gratitude,” I said, brushing a speck of … countryside from my lap. “For so long as the nobility continues to concoct slapdash schemes with no hope of success, the kingdom can continue to assign blame on you when all else goes wrong. When the mobs come calling and heads start rolling, it ensures a steady queue of necks can be offered before ours are reached. That is why the nobility continues to exist, you see, despite the ceaseless treason. So allow me to offer a word of advice when next you wish to survive in a position of responsibility. When fleeing, the best defence isn’t to run faster–it’s to trip the person beside you. And this means better hiring practices.”
I glanced pointedly around me.
All this empty space and not even a single eyepatched second-in-command to use as a distraction? An amateur mistake. One the baroness now realised as her mouth opened wordlessly, the realisation of her solitude only now dawning upon her.
Yet all it invited was a newly wrought defiance.
“I do not mean to flee,” she said, her fists tightly clenched. “I am Arisa Sandholt. And even should I be captured here, you would not be afforded a night’s rest. I am not alone. Whether tonight or tomorrow, this kingdom will fall. I am not alone in planning its demise.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Oh, please. Planning my kingdom’s demise is what everyone does.”
“What?”
“If it’s not being actively planned, it’s because someone’s in the middle of planning how to formulate a plan. And then once they’ve finished planning, they wonder why their plan didn’t work as planned. This is not a cause for concern. It’s a sign the world is still spinning the correct direction.”
The baroness feigned a dignified silence.
It was far too late, of course. By default, nobility had no dignity.
Still, I accepted the effort, and filled the silence with a tidy clap of my hands.
“Now, since you’ve no intention of fleeing, you can be useful instead. I’ll require a full inventory of your stock. I intend to requisition every single item you have in your possession. Every grain. Every crown. And every odd piece of tableware, carpet, candleholder and painting you might have.”
I pointed at the barn. A tragic thing to requisition. But if I was fortunate, it’d grow lacquered tiles and bay windows in the short steps between here and there.
Suddenly, the baroness’s eyes widened. The needless defiance dropped alarmingly from her face.
“Wait … what do you mean by that?”
I paused for a moment, puzzled by her reaction.
This was hardly the complicated part.
“I mean exactly what I mean. This should come as no surprise. I will be emptying every corner of the property you’ve misappropriated, including whatever manner of tunnels you’ve carved for your use. Rest assured, I’ll be employing the talents of my retainers extensively. With or without your cooperation, every single inch of your abode will be inspected by myself for the Royal Treasury’s benefit.”
She blinked between Renise and Coppelia. Although one was dressed as a maid and the other now appeared to be napping on the ground, their skills when it came to matters of unearthing valuables in my kingdom’s underbelly was not one I doubted.
Nor, from the way the baroness gulped, did she.
“I can do it,” she said suddenly.
I looked at her in confusion, uncertain what ploy this was.
“... Excuse me? Do what?”
“The items of value. I can bring them out. There’s no need to personally see to such a thing yourself.”
“While I’m in full agreement, I can hardly trust your reliability in this manner. And besides, I’ll hardly be playing the mule. I shall be supervising while closely assessing every item.”
Once more, the tonsils came out.
An appalling disregard of decorum. There was only one time that nobility was permitted to look so horrified in my presence. And that’s if they were copying my own after I discovered a list of marriage suitors posing as a napkin beneath the dessert spoon again.
“E-Even so … as the one who wronged you, I insist on not troubling a princess any further. If you give me a few moments, I can acquire the most important valuables for you in a fraction of the time you’d spend on finding them.”
“A few moments to hide them, you mean. No, I’m afraid that anything you wish to stuff beneath a floorboard will need to be appropriately examined first.”
I leaned away in mild alarm as a bead of sweat ran down the baroness’s face.
A moment later–
She finally did what only someone in her position could.
Adhering to the instincts of all nobility, she swept up her dress and suddenly dashed away.
Except it wasn’t towards the dark forest, to be lost amidst the shadows and the jaws of whatever awaited her there. It was back towards the barn.
I watched as she stumbled several times before even reaching the steps.
“... A desperate sight, no?” I said, with a sad shake of my head. “To throw away all semblance of the image she’d hoped to craft. Now she flees like a frightened towngirl. She should know that escape is now impossible.”
Beside me, Renise let out a hum.
Far from chasing after the baroness, she collected the pack of cards I’d assembled for memory wiping purposes. She began to build a house of cards.
I looked at her in puzzlement. She gave a strangely pained smile in reply.
“I believe we can offer her a few moments.”
