Several years throat/neck pain, looking for advice!
2024.05.16 13:11 FindingRelief Several years throat/neck pain, looking for advice!
I want to make this VERY compact as to not overcomplicate things. I'm 26, M, 5'7, 199 Lbs.
About three years ago, I drank heavy and went to bed. I don't know if I got COVID or something, but I woke up with the nastiest cough ever, and the pain got better, but never away. There isn't a day that goes by where I think about doing something risky to myself, so I thought I'd ask to see what I could do or what specialist I could ask next. It feels like daily inflammation around my tracheal area, does NOT matter what I eat or if I don't eat. I don't have a problem with breathing, and I do NOT smoke.
List of things I
KNOW it's not: acid reflux, asthma, thyroid problem, I've done extensive testing with each of these, and have already tried PPI's, gotten a barium swallow, chest ct, upper endoscopy, and it's nothing of the sorts.
List of things
I KNOW helps: Antibiotics. I took two rounds of antibiotics two years ago, and one 2-week round of antibiotics VERY recently, and those ALWAYS had me feel normal/relieved around the pain, but it's never fully. I always feel that the round of antibiotics just, aren't long enough, or something. I recently took amoxicillin-clav 875-125mg and the first few days were RELIEF central, I cannot believe there was a point where I was beginning to feel normal.
What could I do? I want to get a biopsy of my tracheal area/larynx area, but my pulmonologist doesn't want to do that as the CT scan came out negative. I was given antibiotics by a new ENT that I visited and again, that's the ONLY time I felt normal. Could it be some sort of lingering bacteria that just won't be killed? Do I need surgery? I'm running out of fuel to keep going.
I've uploaded an image of where this constant, daily pain is. It's never my lungs, or anywhere else, only this specific area that gets better ONLY with antibiotics, but never fully. I'm very happy to answer any questions, please, I'm running out of options. Thank you!

2024.05.16 12:45 AbidingStereo0330 Chest pain, elevated d dimer, no clot.
27F
No smoking, only drink once in a blue moon, no drug use.
Only medication I take regularly is Tylenol/Ibuprofen for migraines and joint pain.
Height/weight if that matters, I'm 5'3" and around 250lbs, haven't weighed myself in years tbh.
kind of desperate at this point, not sure if I'll even get a response but I'm willing to try anything at this point. For the past 3 ish years, I have been having major chest pains in the middle of the night. Main problem is there's no consistency with it. When it happens, what I've eaten, how bad it is, etc. Usually it's intense pain in the center of my chest that radiates through my ribs. Often have trouble breathing, often feel it around the sides or back of my ribs. I've been to the ER twice, and no one can find anything wrong. First doctor was positive it was heartburn before even looking at anything, and yes I'm fat and don't eat right, but in (at the time) my 24 ish years of being alive I rarely even had heartburn, and it was barely noticeable when I did. So for it to suddenly be so severe would be weird to me. Anyway, x ray showed nothing, blood test showed elevated d dimer. Did a CT scan, didn't find a clot so they ignored that. The elevated d dimer was the only thing either doctor found. I changed my diet based on the first doctor's advice even though I didn't think it was heartburn. Less greasy/fatty food, less seasonings, not eating after 7pm, only drinking water, etc. It didn't help. And again, the pain is not consistent. In the best case scenario, eating grilled chicken and white rice before 7pm and laying down to sleep at 11, I will wake up at 4am with severe pain that will last hours, no pain medication or antacids I've tried help at all. It has only continued to get more frequent, and when the pain is bad it's debilitating for days afterward at this point. When it started getting worse I went back to the ER, and the second doctor told me he was sure it wasn't heartburn, and did a bunch of blood tests but said everything came back normal. If it helps, they gave me a steroid in my iv that time, and the pain relief was so instant I almost passed out. He prescribed some pain meds that didn't help, but basically pushed me out the door when he couldn't find anything. At most he guessed inflammation of the tissue between my ribs, but he only put that on my discharge papers and didn't actually talk to me about it or how to manage it. I've just been living with this pain now but it keeps getting more frequent and more intense, I quit my job due to lack of sleep a because I can't function when more often than not I'm up all night in pain that's at best uncomfortable and at most has me gasping for air and sobbing. More info I thought of last minute, This started a few months after my second round of covid back in 2021. Doctors didn't think it was relevant.
This was longer than I thought so TLDR; Inconsistent chest/rib pain that lasts hours, blood test showed elevated d dimer but scan showed no clot. Change in diet, use of pain medicine and antacids did nothing for me.

2024.05.16 12:40 Relevant-Aioli2983 Need help and advice
So as of 2-3 years ago my second ab from the top on the right side of my body poped/bulged out when lifting my daughter. When straightening up it poped back, it has happened to me twice. I’ve went for a CT scan about 6 month later and they could not find a hernia. But how it bulged out I was convinced it was a hernia, after talking to different doctors one told me it could be a strain. I can’t find anything that says a strain could bulge out though.
Just wondering if that can happen with a strain? Or if someone knows if it’s possibly something else as I can’t seem to get any definitive answers

2024.05.16 12:38 Raisin_Jane Blood in urine, timing of urology referral
My father is 66M. Non-smoker, no history of serious illness or chronic medical conditions. 3 days ago he noticed a large amount of blood in his urine. It was the first time he had ever experienced this symptom. The problem has persisted and not gone away. Obviously, he is massively concerned about the possibility of cancer. He had an appointment yesterday with his primary care provider. They set him up with an urgent referral to a urologist. The want him to get a CT Scan or MRI scan, or an ultrasound exam. Also a Cystoscopy. The earliest that he can get in is 2 weeks. Here are my questions: 1) Is 2 weeks too long of a time to wait before actually seeing a urologist? 2) If it is something potentially serious (cancer etc.) shouldn't he be seen immediately? 3) Should we make a concerted effort to get him into a urologist sooner (if possible)? If it is something potentially serious, will not being seen for 2 weeks affect the possible outcomes? Thanks in advance for any input.

2024.05.16 12:18 pricey12345 CT Sinus Scan Results
Can anyone help me understand these results please? 36F UK - CT scan of sinuses due to chronic sinusitis and general ill health with unknown cause.
GP ordered this test to see if sinisitus could be underlying cause for my autoimmune type symptoms rather than an autoimmune issue.
I was previously told after having a camera up my nose that I had a deviated septum and nasal polyps - does this say my septum is not deviated? Many thanks.

2024.05.16 12:17 tallyhoo123 Rant/Vent about in patient teams
Consultant in ED here (Aus) - have to vent about in patient team and their lack of foresight / over confidence.
Patient 1: 56 yr old female with BG of renal transplant, currently on mycophenylate presents with generalised abdo pain and vomiting. Mild AKI compared to baseline (creat 220 from 170) and CRP 60. Found to be nitrate positive UTI with otherwise normal CTAP completed.
Referred to Renal for admission, IV ampicillin / Gentamicin charted. Seen by the Renal AT (advanced trainee, similar to senior resident in US or ST 4-6 in UK). They class this as undifferentiated abdo pain / gastritis and want a surgical review (despite normal CTAP) and want us to admit and discuss with Gastro for PUD / Gastritis.
I said no, decision is final, you can discuss with Gastro all you want but the active threat to this patients life is the UTI in a Renal transplant who is immunosuppressed.
Patient 2: 70 yr old female with recurrent UTIs presents with loin pain and dysuria / frequency & Vomiting. 1 month ago was admitted with eColi sepsis and kidney stone requiring ICU admission due to septic shock. Obs stable but nitrate positive (despite being on prophylactic Abx), CRP 120, WCC 15, CT Renal tract negative for stone.
Referred to Renal for admission and IV abx (Gent / Ampicillin). Same Dr reviews patient and says she can be discharged if eating and drinking with oral Abx, talks to my junior to arrange this discharge.
Again I say No and patient admitted to ward for ongoing treatment and observation to ensure no deterioration as patient high risk for gram negative sepsis.
The attitude I got from this Dr was as if I had no idea what I was doing. Many excuses to not admit both patients and a confidence that made me second guess myself (only for a minute).
They had no foresight into potential problems that could develop, they had no insight into how pathologies can be atypical in presentation and that cold hard facts Trump clinical gestalt in high risk patients.
These Drs always discuss their reviews with their consultant, however I find they frame the patient very differently. On reviewing their documentation, patient 1 was described (by them to their boss) as an undifferentiated abdo pain with features of viral gastroenteritis, failed to mention the Urine results or the clear CTAP thus getting the support from their senior to try and bump the patient away to another team.
I am glad that where i work we have a 1 way referral pathway - ED makes the decision foe admission and its up to the reffered team to either treat, or refer themselves to another team, or to discharge the patient themselves (therefore taking responsibility).
Rant over but this annoyed the Feck out of me today!!

2024.05.16 12:15 cybersec49 Red Teaming for Medical Devices: Securing Connected Healthcare Systems
The rise of connected medical devices has revolutionized patient care. These devices, from pacemakers to insulin pumps, offer continuous monitoring, remote intervention, and improved data-driven treatment plans. However, this connectivity also introduces new security vulnerabilities. Malicious actors targeting these devices can compromise patient safety and privacy.
Here’s where red teaming comes in.
Red teaming is a simulated cyberattack exercise designed to expose weaknesses in an organization’s security posture. In the context of medical devices, a red team acts like a malicious hacker, attempting to exploit vulnerabilities in devices, networks, and systems to achieve a specific goal, such as stealing patient data, disrupting device functionality, or causing physical harm.
This blog post will delve into the importance of red teaming for medical device manufacturers and healthcare organizations. We’ll explore how red teaming services can identify and address security gaps in connected healthcare systems, ultimately safeguarding patient data and ensuring device integrity.
Why is Red Teaming Critical for Medical Devices?
Traditional security testing methods often focus on known vulnerabilities.
Red teaming, however, takes a more proactive approach. By simulating real-world attacks, it uncovers previously unknown weaknesses that attackers might exploit. Here’s why red teaming is crucial for medical devices:
- Identifying Unforeseen Threats: Red teams think like attackers, employing a variety of techniques, including social engineering, network vulnerabilities, and physical security breaches. This helps uncover unexpected attack vectors that traditional testing might miss.
- Testing Security Controls: Red teaming exercises assess the effectiveness of existing security controls like firewalls, access controls, and intrusion detection systems. It exposes weaknesses in these controls, allowing organizations to strengthen their defenses before a real attack occurs.
- Improving Incident Response: Red teaming helps organizations test their incident response plans and procedures. By experiencing a simulated attack, healthcare providers and manufacturers can identify gaps in their communication, response protocols, and crisis management strategies.
- Building Security Culture: Red teaming fosters a culture of security awareness within an organization. By experiencing the consequences of a successful attack, stakeholders become more invested in cybersecurity best practices.
Benefits of Utilizing Red Teaming Services
Red teaming requires specialized skills and knowledge. Partnering with a reputable red teaming service provider offers several advantages:
Red Teaming for Medical Devices: A Simulated Attack Scenario
Let’s consider a hypothetical scenario:
A medical device manufacturer develops a new insulin pump with remote monitoring capabilities. To ensure its security, the company engages a red teaming service provider.
The red team starts by studying the device’s architecture, communication protocols, and software. They then identify potential attack vectors, such as vulnerabilities in the wireless communication between the pump and the monitoring system.
The red team attempts to compromise the device using various techniques, including:
- Social engineering: Phishing emails are sent to employees with access to the device’s control systems, tricking them into revealing sensitive information or clicking on malicious links.
- Network vulnerabilities: The red team scans the manufacturer’s network for security gaps that could be exploited to gain access to patient data stored on the cloud.
- Physical security: The red team assesses the physical security of the production facility where the insulin pump is manufactured. They attempt to gain unauthorized access to the facility and tamper with the devices.
The Outcome: The red team’s simulated attack might be successful in uncovering vulnerabilities in the device’s communication protocol, weak access controls on the manufacturer’s network, or lax physical security measures at the production facility.
By identifying these vulnerabilities, the manufacturer can take corrective measures, such as:
- Patching software vulnerabilities in the device.
- Implementing multi-factor authentication for accessing device control systems.
- Enhancing physical security at the manufacturing facility.
Through this red teaming exercise, the manufacturer proactively addresses security weaknesses, safeguarding patient data and ensuring the integrity of their device.
Conclusion
Red teaming is not a one-time event. It should be integrated into a comprehensive security strategy for medical devices.
Regular red teaming exercises, combined with ongoing
vulnerability management and security awareness training, create a proactive and layered defense against cyber threats.
By embracing red teaming, medical device manufacturers and healthcare providers can demonstrate their commitment to patient safety and data privacy. This not only builds trust with patients but also enhances brand reputation and fosters a culture of security within the organization. In today’s evolving threat landscape,
red teaming serves as a critical tool for securing connected healthcare systems and ensuring the future of safe and reliable medical technology.
Taking the Next Step If you’re a medical device manufacturer or healthcare provider interested in exploring
red teaming services, consider researching reputable red teaming service providers with experience in the healthcare sector. These providers can help you design and execute a red teaming exercise tailored to your specific needs and vulnerabilities.
By investing in red teaming, you’re investing in the safety and security of your patients and the integrity of your connected medical devices.

2024.05.16 11:42 Aelirenn As a TNBC girl, I am celebrating big milestone today! 🎉
I just got my results of PET/CT scan and I am still cancer free 🎉 2 years after finishing my chemo, 2,5 years after diagnosis. When I was getting the treatment this day seemed so far and so unobtainable... I thought I am basically done having TNBC, but no. I am here. Two years later. Perfectly healthy. I am beyond happy!!! The scanxiety was through the roof before getting the results 😅
Also on even happier note I got an approval from the doc to finally start a family now since the risk of recurrence is much lower. F*cking happy day 🥰

| Hey y'all I might need help with some medical language. My grandmother (75) was recently diagnosed with a lymphatic tumor in the brain, which she successfully got removed. She's going to her chemo and radiotherapy, and she seems to be doing okay. She got diagnosed in the middle of March and by April 4th she got the mass removed. She started to go to her treatments since the middle of April. We have lots of hope for her recovery, although her sense of taste and smell are completely out of whack. Unfortunately, my mother (53) is having issues. At the end of December, start of January, my mom had a large pocket of puss on her right back side that put her in the hospital. She got it drained and got a couple of scans done. Under that pocket, there is a mass located outside the right kidney. Recently (May 10) she got an MRI since she has her urologist appointment today (May 16). We picked up her scans from the hospital to take them to the appointment today. Because my mom's first language is Spanish, I had to try and translate the documents to her. The results mentioned being "consistent with renal cell carcinoma". I'll attach an image. If anybody can help with the language, since English isn't my first, I would be so grateful. I'm aware we still have the appointment to go to, but I just want to know how much we should prepare emotionally. submitted by ourotoro to CancerFamilySupport [link] [comments] |

2024.05.16 10:26 MrPBAndJam Possible TMJ? How to manage intense pain?
It’s been at least two weeks now that I am experiencing TMJ symptoms. What started as a dull ache in my jaw is now full on intense pain that rotates around my neck, jaw, and other parts of the face.
Symptoms point to TMJ but is the pain really this constant? I am in pain literally since I wake up and until I fall asleep (poorly at that). I have been seeing a GP but he’s taking so slow and the pain has been so intense. My xray indicated I had a straightened lordosis and we will try a CT scan if the pain persists. I am also seeing an orthodontist tomorrow.
Finally, how do you manage pain? I have been prescribed myonal and an NSAID but it’s doing NOTHING. Tips would be wonderful.

2024.05.16 10:22 MetabolicTwists Cat not eating/drinking - Day four
Hi, I need support! My 15 y/o neutered cat has been struggling with congestion and bloody nose (one sided) since February.
We have given him three rounds of three different antibiotics - he has been on steroids - he went under to get radiographs of his nasal passages and got his teeth cleaned.
I'm on day four of no water and food. He was at the veterinarian on Tuesday and I'm going back this morning. I am going to ask the vet for an appetite stimulate and subcutaneous fluids.
He has a CT scan scheduled for next week to get a better idea of why this is happening.
Has anyone gone through this and your cat survive? I'm terrified to loss him. Ive been giving him water via syringe every hour - I have him in a separate room with two humidifiers running. What else can I do? I'm so lost!
Thanks!!

I'm on day four of no water and food. He was at the veterinarian on Tuesday and I'm going back this morning. I am going to ask the vet for an appetite stimulate and subcutaneous fluids.
Has anyone gone through this and your cat survive? I'm terrified to loss him. Ive been giving him water via syringe every hour - I have him in a separate room with two humidifiers running. What else can I do? I'm so lost!
Thanks!!
Edit to add - he has a scheduled CT scan next week.

2024.05.16 09:55 UnableAssist3089 Mid-40s 8 Months Post Op Double Jaw
Posting because I don't see many people posting months out about their experience nor people out of their 20s.
If you are wondering if you need this procedure or "should get it," talk to medical professionals as this is a serious medical procedure.
Eight months post op double jaw surgery and here's where I'm at:
I sleep much better.
The movement in my upper and lower jaw feels like a lot (you could fit the old position of my upper teeth directly behind where they are now... odd to think about. Fell asleep in the living room around others on Thanksgiving (about two months after surgery) and, after waking, was told that I didn't snore... even a little bit. My sleep is generally more restful and if it's feeling disordered, is most likely due to stress, caffeine intake, etc.
I still have numbness / tingling / sensory issues.
I am still experiencing numbness in my teeth, gums, chin, lips, and the "smile lines" area. My Invaslign trays tend to exacerbate this. Massage (including lymphatic drainage) have definitely seemed to help me as has avoiding hard food (even at 8 months things like tortilla chips are uncomfortable). As the months have gone on, the numbness has lessoned a great deal and things are feeling more "normal". Also, my last Invisalign scan seemed to yield trays with a better fit and wearing them these last few months was not the challenge it was in the immediate aftermath of the surgery.
The facial changes are real.
I was feeling cute before surgery: to have a new face (one that I didn't "design" in advance) was a lot to handle as the swelling lessened and I could begin to see what I might look like. Yes, things have settled (it takes a long while for swelling to go down), but my face definitely has a "new" feel. Part of this is the natural process of healing tissue and me acclimating to the (honestly) minor changes. My nose is straighter, my jaw more prominent and, honestly, my second face it is not bad at all.

2024.05.16 09:40 AprilRyanMyFriend Migraine With Vertigo
I've had migraines for over 2 decades, yet this past week they seemed to have "levelled up." I got a bad migraine on the opposite side then usual and now have vertigo that makes me nauseous and like the world is spinning. Went to an urgent care and they gave me some shots to kill the current migraine, which worked, but the vertigo has remained. It has gotten better but I never quite know what's going to trigger it. Except laying down, that triggers it the worst.
I have an appointment with main doctor and there's likely another CT scan in my future. I know ventribular migraines are a thing, just never had one before.
My question is this: For those who have experienced similarly, how long did the vertigo last after the migraine was gone?
Edit: I have done the Epley Manuever a few times and it seems to help, though only temporarily. I've also started developing another migraine on the normal side... yay.

2024.05.16 09:24 Resident_Teaching_56 New diagnosis?
Hello all Sunday of course on Mother’s Day I started having severe side pain in my life side. To the point where I was going to faint. My daughter had just fallen asleep so I toughed it out for the night and tried to sleep that night but all night I was shaking and jerking in my sleep my fiancé even took videos for the doctors office. I ended up going to the ER Monday morning. The doctor did lab work said everything looks fine your good. My grandmother who was there with me demanded a CT scan. Doctor at ER literally rolled her eyes mean while she never prescribed any pain meds which whatever I was more concerned for the root cause she was all smiles giving someone Nextdoor Vicodin. Get the CT scan back and said I had a 4cm cyst on my right ovary which for that ovary was pretty much the size it. Next was the dilated left ovary vein. I really have never heard of pelvic congestion syndrome. I went home did more research and decided I was going to follow up with my PCP who said my stomach pains was probably caused by a biological medication I take for a skin condition called humira I was frustrated at this point but she offered an ultrasound. My maternal grandmother different from the one who went to the er with me works for this office. The ultrasound showed the cyst was filled with blood and I was getting blood flow where that vein was. The doctor didn’t call me but my grandmother did with my Results. I’m frustrated as I have always had issues with my periods being abnormal, heavy, and extremely painful. Nobody ever took me serious….and I’m still having a hard time. Any helpful tips/meds you are taking would be greatly appreciated or even someone who could explain in further detail. Do I see an OBGYN for this issue? My finance and I were talking about going where he goes for his liver issues which is 2 hours away and they have a great hospital and doctors.

2024.05.16 08:18 LowTough8136 Scan barcode/QR codes in the background
Hi,
I'm looking for a barcode/QR scan solution than can scan a code while the UI is not focused on a textfield and/or the camera screen will not be shown.
So basically it should listen for a scan in the background and trigger a delegate function to handle the incoming scan (= scanned textual code).
I've seen some packages and solutions, but they all work with a procedure that opens the camera screen.
For now I just want it to work on Zebra and Point Mobile scanners (both run on Android).
If you have any suggestions, that would be great.

2024.05.16 08:16 DescriptionOwn6184 Possible TB in the Republic of Georgia...?
I had a nasty cough around late FEB. It persisted for about six days. Lots of discharge. Seemed reminiscent of acute bronchitis (that I get once a year, in general). The residuals lasted a few weeks after (coughing with no production) which leads me to think it was pneumonia. Maybe.
Fast forward to the beginning of May and the nasty cough re-surfaced. Greatly elevated levels of discharge and fever the first couple of nights. Bad to the point of getting zero sleep over the first few days. Mid-week, I went in for an X-Ray and the docs said it might be TB which I have since learned is quite prevalent in this country. Did a follow-up CT scan a couple of days later and after the analysis came back, they said it could be either TB or pnuemonia.
The symptoms seem to have dimnished insofar as discharge is minimal (a few times a day, very light in color, practically clea sometimes bubbly) and I sleep more or less without issue. I took a week of broad-spectrum antibiotics after the effects were already diminshing (as directed). My wife now has a dry cough with nasal congestion, something I read is common for female TB-afflicted - this is after enjoying similar symptoms as desrcibed above.
I tried to track the "symptom progression stages" on google but had little luck outiside of "since the early 1700s" etc. For my part, I have not experienced loss of weight, appetite, or any more fevers or night-sweats (the latter in general being somewhat difficult to gauge as I've always been a fan of "sweat it out" - wearing a hoodie and winter pajamas under layers of blankets to nuke my body). I now sleep in my underwear without any current feve night sweat issues.
I'm a 38yr old human male, 173cm, 68kg. 10% body fat. Avid gym-goer (3-5 times a week). 95%+ of my food is healthy home-cooked stuff. I in general don't take any medicine for anything. Very much an "of my own flesh and will" kind of person. Also a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan with 2nd Ranger Battalion (exposed to burn barrels in '06 and millenia-old corpse/ fecal dust in Afghani sandstorms in '13). I've had a chronic light cough since...'13, though the VA docs have checked me and given me the all-clear numerous times since then. My wife, by comparison, takes ALL the meds in every circumstance.
When I DO get sick, it's 7 times out of 10 a lung-issue. Oh! When I was a baby I didn't get no tiddy milk. My wife (Russian) says that's why my immune system is shit. I tell her that tiddy milk laden with crack and meth wouldn't have done me any favors anyhow.
