2024.06.09 22:16 tiger_1829 Did I make a mistake? (AMEX Gold)

Hey all, I recently got the AMEX Gold card believing it would fit into my current lineup of the Sapphire Preferred + Freedom Unlimited (Parents helped set them up when I was younger). I'm 25, part of a big city and this sums up my everyday + goals - Grocery shopping for the occasional home-cooked - Aim to eat out/takeout a few times a week - Pay for rent - Saving up to go traveling/vacation
Part of the reason I'm feeling this way is hearing the rumors of the price hike and I don't think it's sensible to keep it as part of the lineup at that point.
My current strategy was to have the CSP take care of my subway costs and paying for flights, AMEX Gold take care of dining out and groceries, and CFU take care of everything else
When it comes to vacationing, UR points can help with flights/hotels along with AMEX Gold MR points

2024.06.09 21:58 iamkingsleyf 5 Different Types of Barbed Wire

There are many different types of barbed wire. Many people invented styles of fencing that may have been labeled barbed wire before 1863.
These, however, were never made available to the general public. Michael Kelly came up with the idea for a fence with points tied to twisted wires in 1863.
This was the first time the barbed wire was generally available in the market.
When it became impracticable to continue utilizing stone and timber rails for fencing in the 19th century, different types of barbed wire became necessary.
This was because they were costly to use and became scarce over time. Highways, jails, privacy fields, and the boundaries of grass fields are the most common places where you can see the barbed wire.
The term 'devil's rope' is commonly used to describe barbed wire. Furthermore, the adoption of this fencing tool has altered lives worldwide.
Barbed wire is presently in use by almost everyone in some way or another. It did away with the necessity for fencing, allowing livestock to graze freely and travel freely within a specific region.
Farming might be done much more efficiently, and more people could relocate to the area. The primary rationale for employing barbed wire was that wooden fences were pricey and inconvenient for working conditions.
However, the tasks could be done more efficiently if the barbed wire were used. The automatic twist machine makes barbed wire out of high-quality low-carbon steel wire.
Single twist barbed wire, double twist barbed wire, and traditional twist barbed wire are the three most prevalent twist varieties of barbed wire.

Different Types of Barbed Wire Twist

Single barbed wire fences have sharp edges and are made with high-tensile wire. You can see a Single barbed wire in the military, prisons, detention facilities, government buildings, and other national security establishments.
The barbed tape appears to have been the most popular high-class fencing wire in recent years, not only for military and federal security purposes but also for cottage and society fences and other private structures.
Two-line wires are twisted together, and wire barbs are connected to make double barbed wire. Use a bent nail to secure the wire to the wooden fence posts.
This style is far safer than single high-tension barbed wire. Barbed wire is ideal for cattle fencing and the top wire atop a standard stock fence because of its great tensile strength. It can also be used for farm fencing and grassland farming.
Barbed wire is a relatively inexpensive and somewhat effective fencing material. When pushed against the fence, the barbs cause pain, preventing the horses from doing so.
Furthermore, traditional barbed wire can be made from galvanized steel or low-carbon steel. PVC-coated wires, zinc-coated wires, and even iron wires are all options.
To keep corrosion to a minimum, the wires have been galvanized. Typical applications are land fencing, animal cages, residential security, and commercial security.

Types of Barbed wire

Barbed wire comes in different types, shapes, and sizes. These are listed below, along with extensive explanations.

1. Galvanised Barbed wire

Many countries currently employ this type for security, government buildings, detention centers, and military facilities.
The length and spacing of the barbs vary depending on the size of this type. The four galvanized single barbed wire spikes are spaced around 70 to 120 mm apart.
This type of barbed wire is distinguished by high tensile wire and is ideal for security applications. In terms of sharpness and appearance, its barbs are incredibly similar to razor blades.
Due to the thin, razor-edged barbs, intruders will find it incredibly difficult to climb over this type of barbed wire. Both the wire and the strip are galvanized to prevent corrosion.

2. PVC Coated Barbed Wire

This type of barbed wire fencing is mainly utilized for security purposes. It's a vinyl-coated wire that not only resists rusting but also increases the material's strength.
Because the layers are covered with vinyl, their wear is significantly reduced when in use. This kind is ideally suited to ocean engineering.
This kind usually has two twisted wires with four spikes placed roughly 65 to 120 mm apart.

3. High Tensile Steel Barbed Wire

This is one of the types of barbed wire; his collection has a curl width of approximately 1000 mm. Each spike is around 60 mm away from its neighbor, with a tip length of 13 to 20 mm. This collection is available in many different sizes.

4. Concertina Barbed wire

Concertina barbed wire is one of the different types of barbed wire with a one-strand line wire with many protrusions on it.
Because these protrusions prevent the barbs from sliding down, this type is commonly employed in chain link or expanded metal fencing for high security.
Sharp edges, corrosion resistance, rigidity, and stability are all characteristics of barbed wire. Airport fencing, farm, jail, factory, horse, and highway fencing are the most common applications.

5. Welded Razor Wire

Straight blades are soldered together to create this razor barbed wire. When it comes to security, it's a very functional type of barbed wire, and it also looks very appealing, thanks to its tidy appearance.
It's made of stainless steel, with a little carbon steel and wire tossed in for good measure.
Furthermore, Barbed wire is a great security measure, and most people have used it for that purpose since its development in 1873.
Intruders will find it incredibly difficult to access a property protected by barbed wire because it has sharp metal edges.
Barbed wire is available in various varieties, and you should select the barbed wire that best meets your requirements.

2024.06.09 21:57 Historical-Sign-3945 How long is too to stay lonely in a marriage?

My husband is attractive, a good father and provider. But he leaves very little with me and the children. He is SOCOM so part of it it beyond his control. In his free time he has gotten his bachelors and Masters. My daughter I. Second grade drew a crayon drawing of all of us I. The yard playing and him upstairs on his computer. He always has a reason why it’s necessary for him to travel or do more school. I feel like a dog waiting at a door for him to pay attention to us. I understand the challenges of military life but he fills his off time with work too. My kids are getting older and becoming resentful. I have hit a wall. I’m very independent but can’t take much more. How much time do I give him

2024.06.09 21:52 MonthSilly317 What can I pursue with my degree in IS?

Greetings, too long to read at the end.
So here goes my thoughts. I'm getting a degree that's a mix of business and information systems. I don't have the option to change majors, not possible (worth to mention I'm not 15)
Now I like programming, done basics of python, moved to HTML and CSS to check it out. But in the end, it's not my passion.
My actual passion is first responder jobs. Always wanted to do that, either firefighting or law enforcement. Again, probably not possible for me to pursue this until I move back to Europe (and even then I don't have the languages, I only speak English. I currently reside in Africa, grew up here.)
Now if I can't pursue my passion, then I want money. I want to live comfortably, I've lived in poverty my entire life and I want a change. At the same time, I don't know what I want to pursue. I thought of combining programming with the sciences, like lots of STEM fields need coding as a necessaty to simulate something for example. But that's incredibly hard, plus I'd probably need to study a different bachelor.
Idealy, this is what I want out of a Job:
That's all I can think of. Also, if what I do helps other, that's a big added bonus.
Other jobs I wanted to do besides firefighting and being an officedetective/intelligence work would be: working with animals and the environment (not in a medical sense, so not a vet) maybe something about conservation? zoology? I briefly thought of going the road to become an anti-poacher in Africa, but after researching it seems I wouldn't be able to join in, I need to have degrees in something environmental and most of the candidates have military experience (something I'd want to do, but again, probably won't happen.) Also jobs in search and rescue. There's a pattern here if you notice. So you can imagine my reaction when my colleagues tell me that I'll end up working a desk job in a corporate place.
Although, freelancing and traveling the world (keeps me active, finding new places, expriencing new things and then working some at night) sounds good, but lets face it, unrealistic in the short term. I'd probably need to build myself a reputation and career for a decade or so.
Long post, sorry, but it actually helped clear my head out.
TLTR- Need career options that will keep me active and mentally engaged with my degree thats business + IS, so i can work in both industry with a few extra certs and work expereince to specialize.
Edit: cruise ships. Yachts. Ocean. Love it all. Sadly, don't see a way where i can utilise my degree to work on board one.

2024.06.09 21:49 Southern-Ad-2173 Saw myself involved in an ancient shipwreck

I (M31) have always been drawn to the ocean. I worked offshore for about 3 years while I was out there it really felt like the place I was supposed to be. I also served in the military and worked in the wildland firefighting industry. Needless to say I’ve led an adventurous life. So a couple years ago I was at a crossroads on figuring my life out. I was really depressed and felt trapped in a life of traveling and being away from my family. So I researched past life regression and decided to give it a try. I appeared on this small island (still not really sure where I feel like it was Mediterranean) I saw very simple huts and docks with a small ancient looking sailboat with oars. I saw my friends and family walking down this trail to me. I knew that I was going somewhere on the boat because that’s how I made a living. I felt the same feeling in this experience that I do now when I have to leave home. This group of people come up to see me off. I couldn’t really see their faces they seemed blurry. The lady that I knew was my wife hugged me tightly. I felt so sorrowful I told her that this was my last trip and I would come back home for good. People were crying and upset, it felt so painful to leave but I had no other choice. I got into the boat with the rest of the crew and we started to row off; as we watched the island get smaller and smaller until we were in the open ocean. The memory fast forwarded to a nighttime storm and rough seas men were hollering as the ship was breaking apart. In the vision I could see my last thoughts in this moment were of my family back on the island. I had an overwhelming feeling that I had abandoned my family and left them to fend for themselves. Then I realized that I have done the same thing in this life and probably other ones too. This memory brought me real grief that I didn’t think I would experience but it did teach me a lesson.

2024.06.09 21:41 more2live4afterall I’m (25F) over 20k in debt and just moved back home. Please tell me the best plan of action here.

I racked up 20k in debt living with my ex boyfriend for the last three years. I was super underpaid (30-40k for first two years in Florida) and also very bad with money and saw credit cards as “free money”. Well now that my frontal lobe has clicked into place, I am realizing this is DISASTROUSLY UNTRUE.
This is what I’m dealing with: - Chase: 12k limit, card is maxed (used this card to put a downpayment on my car, 2k) - American Express: 2k limit, card is maxed - Citibank: 3k limit, card is maxed
Car loan is at 25k, I’ve owned it for a year, I’m not factoring it into the overall debt. It’s a Toyota and I plan on running it into the ground.
COLLECTIONS: 4k bill that the hospital mistakenly charged to me instead of my health insurance. I am still on my parents health insurance and it is the BEST you can have and everything is covered. I do not know what to do with this because the hospital visit occurred three years ago because of a car accident, and I only now became aware of it because it got reported as a collection on my credit. Do I pay it? Do I let it sit?
CURRENT SITUATION: - I was paying 2k in bills. - I am now paying 700 in bills for my car, car insurance, and phone. These are my only bills aside from CC minimum payments. - I just moved home 2 months ago and my parents do not want me to pay rent of any kind. I buy stuff to help with dinner from time to time but that’s about it. - I just went from commuting 2hrs/day 5 days a week, to working fully remote.
WHAT I HAVE: - Bringing home: $1900 per paycheck x 2 = $3800/month in income - $5k in the bank as we speak - $250 in stocks (lol) - nothing in savings.
I’m holding onto the 5k because I’ve never ever had that much saved ever. But please advise me on what to do best. Do I just shovel every penny towards the debt and save nothing? I cannot get a debt consolidation loan as the collection is ruining my credit. What do I do with the collection?
I am willing to do WHATEVER you all think is best so please be harsh. Thank you 🙏

2024.06.09 21:25 OuijaBoard-Demon Redesigning Gaara, Jinchuriki, and the Tailed Beasts.

A predicament that I realized I was facing when it comes to rewrite Naruto was the nonsense that the Tailed Beasts were. All I knew was that I wanted to do was take away the whole 10 Tails/World Tree/Chakra Fruit bullshit but also to make the Tailed Beasts equal in power. (Because I loathed how Kishimoto killed the dynamic Shukaku and Kurama)
I actually got into a small misunderstanding led argument with my best friend about it all but once we got on the same page and realized we were arguing over a basic miscommunication we got to geeking out and conceptualizing and boy was that FUN.
I'm not gonna say WHERE the Bijuu came from or why they exist, they just do (yes I have a reason as to the why and how's but I ain't saying SHIT). and I have changed up their powers and behaviors (I'm mainly writing here because I don't want to lose any of this information incase anything happens, plus if anyone wants to use these ideas they can just pop in over).
To start off, all the Bijuu offer village/country wide benefits to the Shinobi of those villages and countries, depending on the Bijuu it's a side effect of living around them, or just simply putting up with it.
These benefits is because of how vast the chakra of the Bijuu is so all consuming that those who live around and born around it sometimes get the same elemental release as the Bijuu itself which is rare but they always get certain benefits that are more basic but extremely beneficial.
For example, the Village Hidden in the Mist:
The Hidden Mist has two Bijuu, Isobu (3 tails) and Saiken (6 tails).
Isobu grants the Village and Country an extremely thick and protective mist that automatically casts Genjutsu. Those born in the Mist and it's country have a small chance of being born with Boil Release, but are guaranteed to have an extreme resistance to Genjutsu.
Saiken on the other hand grants protection from parasites (so those from the Mist and their country would be protected from things such as tapeworms, ticks, etc.) along with the probability to have the Kekkei Tota of Corrosion Release (Water, Wind and Fire).
These sorts of benefits from the tailed beasts are why villages and countries tend to fight, resource benefits, and beast benefits. However the tailed beasts are stubborn and have their own territories which tends to be where the villages and countries are. If a Jinchuriki were to step out of their countries they get more than a little homesick.
They start taking on attributes of their beast, from claws, cravings, to even getting the tails, though this happens gradually, but if they stay away from their country too long a full possession will occur and the beast will make its way back to the country and there is no stopping it. Some are more stubborn than others and it also depends on the willpower of the Jinchuriki and how long they can resist the urge to go home.
So let's look a the other seven tailed beasts.
Shukaku is very much a stubborn asshole who believes that defense is the best offense. They're manipulative and will stop at nothing to spite humans who they view as beneath them. They grant the village an eternal sandstorm that protects them from raids and warring countries along with the possibility of being born with magnet release. Because of being sealed inside of Gaara, Gaara can bless his village and the shinobi safe travels in the desert.
Shukaku can change their gender and presentation, and did in fact do so to further manipulate Gaara, and get the benefits of being able to use him to lash out at Rasa and the civilians and anyone who they think will be fun to kill. So yes, Shukaku changed their gender and presentation to female to prey on Gaara's survivors guilt and lack of maternal affection.
Shukaku's design has also changed to a mix of a lot of animals, mostly Hyena, Tanuki, and a bit of bear. Also having some artwork from the tea kettle she was sealed in.
She is the cruelest of all the tailed beasts. Those who had been her Jinchuriki (including Gaara) had to put up with either not sleeping at all, or falling asleep and allowing her to possess them and attack the village while they suffer from nightmares that range from psychological horror, to their past trauma haunting them. All Jinchuriki of her's had the same "panda eyes" that Gaara has.
Matami, the 2 tails, is the embodiment of the saying "Curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back", those born in her territory are granted with naturally high IQs and curiosity. They also have the heightened chancr of being born with Storm Release. Oddly enough no matter what happens to the Shinobi and civilians of the country they know all the cardinal directions and which way is up and down. Even while incapacitated.
Goku the 4 tails, has granted his territory (aka village and country) far more minerals than anyone could ask for a long with protection from natural disasters, there is also the chance of being born with Magma Release.
For example, should you be from Iwa and you go and visit a town next to a volcano that was set to go off that week, it won't go off until you leave and are a safe distance from it.
Kokuō, the 5 tails, has been changed to a mountain goat, grants the Shinobi and civilians the ability to walk up anything that isn't a 90° angle WITHOUT THE USE OF CHAKRA, along with extreme endurance. Heightened chance of Earth Release.
Chomei, the 7 tails, is a literal Queen Bee. Seven stingers and all. The honey she and her hive produces will grant increased chakra though depending on the status of the Shinobi and how much they eat it could have a lethal effect.
For example, if a Genin were to get a hold of the honey, they'd have the chakra level of a Jonin for a short amount of time but it could turn the poor Genin into a statue, killing them due to their lack of training and eating more than a teaspoons worth of honey.
Because of Chomei and her hive she grants an abundance of pollination and pollinators, allowing for perfect farming conditions and dominance in the flower industry. She also grants an increased chance of Wood Release. The Village Hidden in the Waterfall (where she resides) are almost at the level on par with the great nations but due to a lack of military operatives they are still not there yet.
Giyuki, the 8 tails, grants safe travels while sailing, and almost an overabundance of sea life (which Matami enjoys), production of ink, and grants a heightened chance of Water Release.
Kurama, this fox grants the territory that is fire country and Hidden Leaf an abundance of wildlife, from bears and deer, to birds, beetles, wolves and more, making it a pain in the ass for anyone trying to invade. But for those of the country and village this grants them far more resources for their animal based Jutsu (Inuzuka and Aburame), and medical resources (Nara and any medical Nin ever). Grants a higher likelyhood for Fire Release.
The Hidden Sand is now a lot like Ancient Egyptian, specifically the 25th Dynasty of Egypts Black Pharohs, Noxus and Shurima from League of Legends.
So yes, the Sand Siblings are now mixed race, (black and Japanese specifically).
Gaara is going to look quite a bit different than his cannon appearance, but the same neglect, maybe a bit worse, and depression is still there. And yes he's keeping the red hair though it's going to be styled in dreads.
Kankuro is going to be pale compared to his siblings because of how much he hides away in his workshop. (He's a nerd).
Side note: never offer to buy food for a Jinchuriki, you'll find your bank account empty before they even say they're done eating.

Session 2 "Futures Past" (June 7th, 2024)
New York: Wednesday, August 9th, 1995
05:00am - 2:30pm, EST
Following the first day of investigation, Agent MAIN is the first to wake. An early-riser after years in the military, he leaves a note for Marsha. The two will meet again, of course. Arriving at work, he gets chatting to some Navy mechanics about the little weird diagram on the napkin. About the best answer he gets (after a successful check), is that one of them remembers seeing something like a clockwork giraffe as an attraction in South America. Studying it on that basis, MAIN concludes it's an artist's attempt at design because he can't see a way for this to work or even what it might really be for. He also checks in with USN and asks a friend to track down some vintage US Arms gear (he noted the serial numbers on the radio and dud-grenade). Not being from the same branch of service (and a failed check), it will take somewhere between 24-48 hours. (I decided US Armed Forces would probably be better at digitizing records, he'll get something either way).
MAVERICK isn't far behind MAIN, starting his day as usual being one of the first into the FBI NYC Field Office. As far as the FBI is concerned, he's on the Wright case now it's in their jurisdiction. Unprepared to wait for the prints to be matched (failed check on Bureaucracy), he instead does it himself (successful Forensics check). Abigail was never arrested, but her father handed in a hairbrush she kept at his and his wife's home. The prints match. It took MAVERICK a little time (it was a close pass), because part of a second, unidentified print obscured one of Abigail's, He can discount himself and the team, and likely anyone in law enforcement as he assumed they would've gone gloved.
Next, he follows up on Art Life and makes a call. He gets on the phone with Cynthia LeChance and in the course of their conversation is able to intuit there's something she's unsure or hesitant about. Being the honest-to-goodness, earnest Agent Cooper type, MAVERICK is able to organise a lunch meeting with her as part of follow up. He doesn't have many questions, he assures Cynthia and it'll be on the FBI's dime. She agrees to meet at 12pm.
(It's worth mentioning I ruled there was no reason MARCUS (Case Officer, M-Cell) or the Agents themselves wouldn't have or be able to obtain pagers they could use to stay in contact. Definitely an incidental expense as far as I am concerned.)
MILHOUSE, after his morning run to campus, follows up on his research from the previous day. He identifies the Ars Goetia and learns there's an 18th century copy in the special collections. Luckily for him, he's able to get about an hour with the book. The book contains the names of some 72 demons, their associated heraldry and symbols which they must "pay allegiance to." The book also contains the supposed means of summoning said entities, but MILHOUSE's time is over before he can get much further into it.
He's the first to arrive at the apartment, late morning/early afternoon (roughly around MAVERICK's planned lunch interview). At the coffeeshop, he's treated to a free beverage by Marsha, who thanks him for bringing his friend in the other day. Sadly, by the time MAIN arrives, her shift is over.
MIRANDA lies awake, watching the minutes tick by until about five minutes before she'd usually be walking into the Village Voice's office before making a call. She's really sorry, but she'll have to take a personal day, but does her best to reassure her editor she's still on for the grill party on Saturday. Of more immediate concern is the missing demonic symbol she is unable to locate. The polaroid she snapped is still in her possession, but she can find no trace of the symbol drawn on its piece of brown wrapping paper anywhere in her apartment. Nor can she find any evidence her home was broken into (she has the right skills to determine that for...reasons).
She makes a quick call to her criminal contact, Hugo. It's been less than 24 hours, but she wants to just follow up to perhaps create a sense of urgency. Hugo says he might have a couple of people on the hook, but it would help if he had more to work with than just "weird and esoteric." MIRANDA will be in touch. Before heading to Kips Bay, she decides to follow up on trying to locate the cab and its driver she photographed the other day; the driver looking down the barrel of the camera at her.
It takes her most of the morning, but MIRANDA locates the garage and office. Mostly making calls asking about a cab outside Abigail's address the previous day. She knows the time, more or less. She finds a schlubby office manager who stonewalls her until money changes hands. MIRANDA gets a name and the cabbie's usual pick up and route. Guy likes to work around the Port Authority Terminal most days, she can probably find him there. She doesn't want to go alone and makes her way to the Macallistar where she expects to find the others.
A night owl and late to wake by nature, MALATESTA hits snooze on his alarm maybe only twice today. Packing up the weird crystal in a ziplock bag stowed in his backpack, he takes himself to the Mercury Gallery. He's got an angle he wants to try and it works, if not quite in the way he perhaps expected.
The gallery owner, Santiago, isn't sure what to make of the skater-grunge kid who rolls into his gallery, but he's not exactly out of place and to be truthful, his story is almost too outlandish not to be true. Through a combination of good roleplay and an opposed check, MALATESTA explains a "dude he's working for" heard about Abigail's exhibition and wanted to know if there were any paintings of hers left unsold.
As it turns out, there are. Santiago explains they're not the cream of the crop: "Most of the others were more abstract and, I would say, exemplary. She did well, especially for an artist in New York. The one or two I have left are a bit more...prosaic."
At about this time, MAVERICK makes his meeting with Cynthia. He's not hard to miss; there is no reality in which he was not a Federal Agent and Cynthia easily marks him across the street. She takes him to a small Italian bistro where she usually has lunch and begins talking. This is what MAVERICK is good at; getting people to talk. Everyone wants to, after all; it's about letting them and knowing where to push and where not.
Cynthia explains how weird the Macallistar has been for her to manage. The building has never been filled to capacity as far she can recall and those units which were occupied never remained so for very long.
MAVERICK: "Did you know Abigail?"
Cynthia: "Not really. I met her once or twice. Went with her and her dad to view the apartment." She smiles. "He was worried about her having a ground floor unit in the city, but it was the one she wanted. Never any complaints from her or from other tenants about her. Then...the rent stopped."
MAVERICK: "Yeah, we saw that."
Cynthia: "No. You don't understand. The rent stopped. No one in the building has been paying rent since March this year."
MAVERICK: "What does that mean?"
Cynthia is nervous. MAVERICK picks up she's worried she might be in trouble and he reassures her she isn't. Far from it, in fact.
Across town, MALATESTA is shown one of Abigail's unsold paintings. Santiago unveils it; a landscape, the frame longer than it is tall. A park, with a city-skyline in the background. In the centre, a statue. There are people. Some gathered in a crowd, others walking in various directions. MALATESTA feels uneasy. Then he sees them: five figures gathered in the shadows of the statue around a sixth, seated on a bench. Merely brushstrokes, details and faces indistinct. One may be a woman. Another appears to be holding a skateboard.
Santiago, distant as MALATESTA gave the painting his full attention, becomes clear again.
"See what I mean? Like something you'd see in a doctor's office."
"Yeah." MALATESTA passes a SAN check, but still takes one.
He was there just yesterday.
This was exhibited in November of last year (1994).
He tries and fails to argue Santiago down on the price and is very unaware that the gallery owner is hitting on him. Wrapping the painting, MALATESTA asks if Santiago can check on where some of the other paintings might have ended up or ask around about Abigail in general. Since it means they will meet again, Santiago is all too happy to oblige and hands MALATESTA a business card, writing his own number on the back.
MALATESTA: "Cool, man. I'll be in touch with the deets."
Santiago: "Sure...the deets." (I think it pained him to say that word)
Before leaving, he lets go something Abigail mentioned during the exhibition. While unable to recall the name, he thinks she said she got her inspiration from a book of some sort. He thinks the name might have been something French.
Across their lunch table, Cynthia explains she thinks Art Life upper management are content to wait for eviction notices to be served to the remaining tenants.
Cynthia: "I think even if everyone paid what they owe and next month's, management wouldn't change their mind."
MAVERICK: "Why?"
Cynthia: "I think they want to renovate the building. Getting everyone out lets them do that. Spruce it up, hike the rent...I lie awake at night wondering if that's legal. I've never evicted a whole building."
MAVERICK: "One of my colleagues bumped into one of Abigail's neighbours. Mr. Post, Lewis Post I think. Same story with him?"
Cynthia: "Yeah, same as the rest. More or less."
MAVERICK: "More or less?"
Cynthia: "He called me the end of March this year, said he'd be late on the rent, but not to worry and then he started asking me about the building."
MAVERICK: "And you did?"
Cynthia: "Yeah, but I wish I hadn't."
She names a few books she picked up, as Lewis wanted more than just what Art Life had on the Macallistar. MAVERICK wonders why, but she explains Lewis was nice and she was curious herself.
"It's a weird building. Always made me feel...off, being there. I can't remember the last time I went in person."
MAVERICK: "What did you learn? I have the architect's name. Daribondi."
Cynthia: "Asa. Asa Daribondi. The Macallistar was built in 1921. He designed it. He...there was a fire at his office on Mott Street in 1950 and he disappeared. He...he was a murderer, Agent Delapore. They found a child's body on the premises. After that, I stopped looking into it."
There's a long silence. The MAVERICK asks her for keys to the unoccupied apartments. He tells her a story about how when he started out in the Bureau, he was involved in a missing person's case. A little girl and in the end, they found her hiding in her treehouse.
Cynthia: "You think Abigail's still in the building? In one of the empty units?"
MAVERICK: "I don't know, but I can't discount it. I don't think she was in a normative state of mind before she disappeared."
Cynthia considers things. The plates are cleared and the coffee served.
Cynthia reaches into her handbag and removes something. "If management don't care about the building, I don't see why I should either." She hands him a master key. "Don't lose this and borrow it for...give it back to me when you're done."
True to his word, MAVERICK pays the bill.
"I hope you find her, her find something to maybe help. She was nice."
MAVERICK and Cynthia say their goodbyes and he heads to Kips Bay.
In the interim, MIRANDA has joined MILHOUSE and MAIN in the coffeeshop, with MALATESTA arriving with weird painting in tow not long before MAVERICK's arrival.
Unable to contain his excitement, MALATESTA nearly unveils the painting right then and there.
MALATESTA: "You won't believe-"
MIRANDA: "Let's not talk about this here."
MALATESTA: "No, I know, but-"
Coffeeshop patrons are giving the table weird looks.
MIRANDA: "Let's not talk about this here."
MALATESTA: "I was jus-"
MIRANDA: "Let's not talk about this here."
Some of the people are frowning, scowling almost.
MILHOUSE (to the other patrons): "Sorry. Sorry."
MAVERICK arrives not long after and the team reconvenes in the apartment to share what they've learned and determine any plans.
Unable to contain himself, MALATESTA reveals the painting. Everyone except MAIN passes the SAN check for the realisation of what it depicts. MAIN takes 4 SAN loss and does not project. Closing in on his breaking point, MAIN is confused and unable to fully process what's going on and throws himself into another search of the apartment.
MIRANDA is concerned about further exposure to the para-natural and wonders if there is anything they can do to take care. All they can do is be cautious.
MAVERICK wants to make a sweep of the empty apartments in the building. MILHOUSE agrees to partner up with him on that front after informing the group of the Ars Goetia. MIRANDA makes a phone call using a booth in the street to reach Hugo and give him the name.
MAVERICK & MILHOUSE examine the results of their experiment about the weird fridge. It looks like whatever is happening in the apartment, it's not just the fridge. (The book could not in anyway have given me anything to account for that, so I just ran with it. Felt appropriate). MAVERICK takes no damage from his SAN check despite failing. He expected to find it that way. MILHOUSE is also fine.
I'm sure that means nothing...
MALATESTA and MIRANDA stay with MAIN in Abigail's apartment to conduct a further search. The three who remain received a +20% bonus to their search rolls and all pass as MAVERICK & MILHOUSE leave to check the building (They can make rolls in the apartment on their return).
They exit the apartment at 2:30pm.
Within, MALATESTA, MAIN & MAVERICK find the following:
A rent receipt with Abigail's name, undated and signature unreadable.
A page of typed script which appears to be a play Abigail was writing. Several names are mentioned: Michelle, Mark & Thomas. Michelle is the first name of one of Abigail's neighbours, right?
A plane ticket in the name of Michael Witwer from Las Vegas to Boston, dated June 6th, 2015.

Dr. Dallon: "Must've been a fake? What with the date and all."
MAVERICK: "Must have been."

Post-Mortem
Five players going in different directions was a little tough to juggle, but they were happy with the pace of play and I made sure everyone had something to do.
I knew we weren't going to get through an entire in-game day about an hour in and I should've taken a bit more time to line up what everyone wanted to do at the end of the previous session, but everyone still had fun. Lea put it well: it feels like there's a dam with information gathering against it and it's going to burst.
With four out of the five players having children, I took a short aside during MAVERICK's rp with Cynthia to do a table check. I know the players and they know me and I handled it in the right way as far as they were concerned.
Two sessions in and MAIN is the first character to close on his BP, being 3 or 4 (one bad roll) away from his first disorder. I appreciate this and his reasons for not projecting make sense, in-character. We'll see how that pans out.
In terms as to what's changed compared to the book, I saw no real reason not to give MAVERICK more info on the architect. Rewarding good roleplay is something I enjoy doing and as far as I'm concerned, he did everything he needed to in-character to get what he got. I also saw no reason why the phone call between Cynthia and Lewis Post could not have conceivably happened. So far, all he has are book titles and info about Daribondi's misdeeds and little else. Getting more will require time investment and skill checks where appropriate.
Our next session is TBD due to life stuff and until then, be seeing you.

2024.06.09 21:08 Mr_Pearly Money Management for Balkan Travel

Hi, I'm travelling in the Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Bulgaria) for a month with my friend.
I'd like advice on how I might manage my money, in 7 countries with 6 currencies. I've heard many places are less card accessible than others, though I'm reluctant to bring cash due to the length of the holiday and potential conversion costs.
For card I'm planning to bring a Monzo as it has the best rates for the currencies. Although I'm worried about ATM access and fees, as well as the risk that I'll take out too much cash and reduce my budget for later in the trip. This is especially an issue due to my tight budget.
Anyone familiar with living and / or travelling in the region I'd love advice, thanks.

2024.06.09 21:06 AcrobaticProof Yonder Credit Card - free ~£50 in points and 3 months premium free (London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Bath)

Hi all,
Yonder is a credit card which provides points to spend on ‘experiences’ such as restaurant meals, coffees, flowers and much more!
If you sign up via my referral link (here: https://join.yondercard.com/bhdfbyx) you will get 10,000 points (worth approximately £50 in credit towards various experiences in cities of London, Manchester, Birmingham Bristol and Bath, or towards the online experiences such as flower deliveries). On top of this, you will be able to claim 3 months premium membership for free which provides worldwide family travel insurance when booking with the card and also 5 points per £1 spent. From my rough calculations, this correlates to somewhere in the region of 1.5 to 3% cash back dependent on the experience.
You’ll also be able to get Mastercard foreign exchange fees and purchase protection.
To sign up, you can go through the referral link (or any referral link!) and follow the steps. They will run a soft credit check to determine if you’re eligible and then if so will run a hard check as with all credit cards to determine your credit allowance.
Your first referral will get you a further 15,000 points, and there’s some other easy points up for grabs for example for adding the card to your Apple Pay.
You can also cancel before the 3 months premium ends to avoid the subscription renewing and once you’ve spent all the points on experiences.
On the whole I’m really enjoying Yonder and hope you will too!

Non-referral link: https://www.yonder.com
Good luck and thank you!

2024.06.09 20:59 New-Tumbleweed-6066 Should we pay off my wife’s student loans?

Should we pay off my wife’s student loans right now? Plus future goals.
My wife (26) and I (26) recently came into some money. We’re trying to be as smart as possible with it and continue to set ourselves up for the future. We aren’t sure what exactly to make moves on, so any advice is appreciated.
Debt:
•Wife’s student loan balance ≈ $17k @ 4.5-5.5%
•My student loan balance ≈ $37k @ 4.5-5.5%, I’m still in school for a PhD and my loans may be discharged due to military disability.
•Home ≈ $277k @ 2.9% ($300k value?)
We own both our cars and have no credit card debt.
Assets:
•HYSA $50k @ 5%
•Misc. checking/savings ≈ $12k
•Misc. managed investments ≈ $20k
•Retirements ≈ $20k
•2 owned vehicle values ≈ $24k combined
We are on track to net $2-3.5k/mo after all of our expenses depending on our responsibility and what’s going on each month. We’re car people and a major goal of ours now that our monthly income has increased a bit and we got a large lump sum this month is to get much nicer vehicles. Maybe spend $80-90k combined on vehicles in the next couple years if things go the way we want.
