2024.05.16 17:22 YourAdChef01 How a Simple Growth Scorecard Helped a DTC Brand Add $100K/Month Without Extra Spend
In Q4 of 2023, I had a revealing conversation with a DTC brand owner who faced a common dilemma: should they focus on more traffic or better conversion?
During our discussion, the brand owner was inclined to boost traffic through paid ads. Instead, I introduced a Growth Scorecard we were developing, designed to pinpoint growth barriers through a few targeted questions.
To our surprise, the brand was excelling in acquiring new customers and retention. The real issue? A below-average conversion rate.
The scorecard highlighted this gap and suggested strategies for improvement. By implementing a comprehensive CRO Optimization Checklist, the brand increased their conversion rate by 30% in just four months, which added $100K/month without any additional spend.
Here’s a breakdown of what we did:
Homepage:
- Value Proposition: The stated value proposition was highlighted prominently to clarify what sets the store apart and why users should choose it.
- Customer Reviews: Featured prominently to build trust and credibility, influencing purchase decisions.
- Store Ratings: Displayed overall store ratings from authoritative review sites (e.g., Trustpilot, Reviews.com, Yotpo, Podium).
Product Page:
- Descriptive Titles: The product titles were made descriptive, providing clear and informative details about the product.
- Key Benefits: The product subtitle highlighted key benefits to entice users further.
- Detailed Reviews: Displayed detailed customer reviews, including star ratings, photos, and verified buyer status.
- Quantity Discounts: Clear quantity discounts were offered near the main CTA (e.g., 1x $24.99/piece, ["Top choice" badge]; 2x $19.99/piece, ["Recommended" badge]; 3x $17.49/piece, ["Best value" badge]).
- Popularity Indicators: Shown how many people had viewed and bought the product in the last 24 hours.
Cart Page:
- Urgency Triggers: Used urgency triggers like "Your items are reserved for 10 minutes" and "If you order in the next 12 minutes, the order will be shipped today."
- Scarcity Triggers: Displayed scarcity triggers for items with low stock prominently (e.g., "Only 1 item in stock") in a prominent color (e.g., red, orange).
- Trust Icons: Included trust icons or seal badges below the main CTA for added confidence (e.g., verified by Norton, 100% happiness guarantee).
Additional Optimizations:
- Implemented 90 more optimizations across the site, focusing on improving user experience and conversion rates.
This case study highlights the importance of evaluating your conversion rate optimization (CRO) as thoroughly as your ads. Often, hidden growth opportunities can be uncovered through careful analysis and targeted improvements.
Key Takeaways: - Optimization Over Spend: More budget isn't always the answer. Focus on optimizing your existing efforts first.
- Data-Driven Decisions: Use data to identify where you're losing potential revenue and address those gaps.
- Personalization is Key: Tailoring your marketing efforts to your audience's needs and behaviors can drive significant results.
Have you evaluated your CRO as thoroughly as your ads? Interested in discovering hidden growth opportunities? I'd love to hear how others have tackled similar challenges. Have you found any simple tools or strategies that made a big impact on your conversion rates?

2024.05.16 17:08 RoughDraftGames Bouquet: The Game of Bees, Blossoms, and Bluffing!
| Hi folks! We're Rough Draft Games. We're a small board game company of a few high school buddies, and a few years ago we published our first game, All Rise, on Kickstarter, largely thanks to your help! We even went on to see that game featured on Smosh Games recently, which was kind of crazy to see! Well after another few years of hard work, we just launched our second game, Bouquet, now on Kickstarter! https://preview.redd.it/3ee583sdus0d1.png?width=864&format=png&auto=webp&s=4a6a39ac50f0ca86b7e4b215a057d56b1f70335d Bouquet is a game of bees, blossoms and bluffing for 3+ players (though we have a two-player and one-player variant in the works). Each player assumes a different petal color and sets out to strategically place their petals throughout the bouquet while plucking their opponent's petals. Placement matters though, as different areas of the bouquet (like where the vase gets placed) are very valuable! There are different petal types with different abilities that make for a super quick but surprisingly strategic game that plays in just 15 minutes, and players have something beautiful and 100% unique by the time they're done. https://preview.redd.it/y89n7iarxs0d1.jpg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6a4b564b50983b71fd5b04bfbad6fe9511afe313 While it's pretty unique in the way that it plays, we were really inspired by other games that beautifully blend seemingly simple mechanics with bluffing and area construction. (Think Skull meets Patchwork, with some flowers thrown in!) We couldn't be more excited or proud to share our work over the past few years with you guys. If you're interested in backing (or seeing some preview videos), head on over to our Kickstarter Page! If you can't support the campaign, that's totally fine, but we'd really appreciate it if you could spread the word or tell your friends about it. We know that we couldn't have made our first game without you guys, and we appreciate all the help we can get! The last day of the Kickstarter will be June 2nd, 2024! Thanks! And happy gaming! submitted by RoughDraftGames to boardgames [link] [comments] |
2024.05.16 17:07 LamarcusAldrige1234 Albert Breer - My understanding is the NFL was in contact with college football powerbrokers on conflicts between its schedule and the CFP. The reason they put two games, and not three, and left the primetime window open on Dec. 21 was in deference to college football.

2024.05.16 17:05 Ambitious-Respect219 Unusual Applicant: 174 PT's, 2.3 UGPA, Actual Scholar at Public Uni
Hello Everyone,
I have really found this /r helpful, and I really appreciate everyone here. I'm an unusual applicant, and I'm really unsure how I should proceed. I am 33, and when I was in Undergrad I experienced some terrible, publicly documented abuse of a novel type (at least in the academic literature). This caused me to have a 2.3 UGPA, I also had to work full time, and am a URM, 1st gen college grad, had to work to support my immigrant wife who couldn't work, (we're still married lmao), etc.
Since then, I have 2 master's degrees, one of which has a 4.0 GPA. As a part of that second 4.0 masters degree, I conducted the largest qualitative/quantitative research on the population that I'm a part of (survivors of this type of abuse), and produced a 100 page thesis on the topic, with some pending submissions to academic journals. A part of it was categorized under legal theory, which is so cool! I also created the first publicly listed college course on that type of abuse as a professor at the university I'm at. I teach on the topic here in the USA, and I do Collaborative Online International Learning on the same topic in Japan & Costa Rica. I have won a few faculty awards for excellent teaching, helped found an academic certificate and now manage it as a faculty member, and have spoken at two huge academic conferences on my research. I'm also a part of the two largest (to my knowledge), advocacy groups for this type of abuse, one of which I founded and manage as well. I teach like 9 different courses at my uni.
I'm looking to get a JD because a big part of my research involves survivors taking legal action as a recourse for this type of abuse. I'd like to be a professor of Law one day, and I know that's hard as hell, but I know I want to teach, because I do in my area, and I love it. I'm also genuinely interested in being an attorney. My LSAT practice is 174-178 consistently (AUG and on). I'd like to go to any top 14 school.
I was wondering if anyone had first hand experience with those admissions counselor networks from last cycle? What was your experience like? did it help? anyone or anything to avoid?
I can get amazing letters of REC from deans, chairs, academic committee members and others that have seen my work. They can all attest that my 2.3 from 15 years ago isn't representative of me. I think I have a really cool story, going from survivor, to advocate, to scholar on my topic. Even defining it with social science evidence and some publications/conferences etc. But I honestly don't know if top schools care. It's been a journey and truly hard as hell to do, but I'm happy I've done it, and this is the next step for me any my family.
Also, am I just screwed due to my low GPA?

2024.05.16 17:03 iluvchikins Please help me figure out if my study method is good (also any tips using chatGPT)
I'm in my third semester of physical therapy graduate school, but last semester made me realize I really have to buckle down on a schedule and study method. I tried using digital notes more (iPad, typed), after being a tactile pen-on-paper person for years, and some of my grades reflected that, so I'm working on figuring out what works for me. I do best using words, condensing, and grouping them together. I also started using AI to help me.
here's my current plan:
I have 3 "planners"- one actual planner for general to-dos for the week/due dates, a memo pad turned into a time block planner to keep track of where my time goes (and classes), and a small notebook listing the class and topic for the week- on the latter two I keep them open (spiral) to the current pages and write anything when I think of it, this has helped me.
- I download PPTs, materials, etc. onto my iPad. I section them based on class and divided these into midterm & final
- Note taking/reviewing: I view it on my laptop and copy/paste parts of the ppt, typing it into chatGPT, asking it to make bullet point notes then copying it into a doc., then follow along with this while comparing it to the OG PPT to ensure it didnt miss any info (while reflecting on the info section by section). during this I hand write the summarized points that chatGPT has made.
- lectures: while watching lectures, I write on my handwritten notes in a different colored pen near words about it, I also started trying to use the Cornell method and leaving spaces for other notes.
- Practice questions: using chatGPT, I'll ask it to make questions and answer it for me. It helps me learn how to think critically about an issue (in the sense of providing a thought process to help me build on). I do think my prompt for MC questions is bad as they're usually really easy even when saying "difficult level".
- Textbook reading: sometimes I'll ask it to turn text into tables, to answer the questions or summarize the text. this is a HUGE time saver for me, I remember spending hours on those end of chapter questions and not knowing if they're even right (no answer key).
- Review: in my school the class above me made really good quizlets based on all the info, so I try to review them for the given subject after my study session. I also condense the words on my notes.
This is only my second week, so I haven't taken exams yet. I feel more confident than my sporadic study schedule last semester. I tried to force myself to be a visual learner (I know I shouldn't have) and also take notes on my laptop and iPad. it simply didnt work for me. I tried because it's a ton of info but idk. im trying my best :,)

2024.05.16 16:52 BackgroundFlatworm26 I fumbled a girl who I genuinely knew wanted me to approach her
The first time I saw this girl was probably around 2 weeks into the beginning of the school year. It was the end of the day and the bus that takes the kids from my early college to the high school was there parked at the front of the main gate. I looked at the bus and noticed a girl already there sitting even though. As I was looking at her I couldn’t note but see how pretty she was. I stared at her for a little bit then looked away knowing in my head i’ll probably never talk to her or she’s probably got a bf. The same thing would happen again a few times see her stare a bit look away. Eventually the bus would stop coming on time, and one day I saw her up close by the side of the gate and stared. She was talking to one of her friends and in my head i just said “damn she’s bad as fuck.” Anyways fast forward near the end of March I guess she’d noticed that I was always looking at her and the quick glances i’d take at her cause here’s what she did next. It was a friday afternoon and school was finally over. I was walking to the door and as I opened it I saw her standing right where I usually stand where I wait for my mom to pick me up at the end of the day, it’s very close to where she stands at the gate. Anyways I see her standing there and she was staring at the door with a smile as if she was waiting for someone. She sees me and stares and her smile gets even bigger. I didn’t think much about it and just pulled my phone out and doomscroll my chronically online tt posts and look up after a bit. I look around she’s like 2 feet away from me standing there smiling at me still I look at her for a bit seeing her just stare at me while she smiles at me I then just look down back on my phone and keep scrolling not thinking why she’s just there. I look up again and I see her still looking at me. Look up for a third time she’s still standing and staring with her pretty smile. Finally the bus comes and I look up again she’d prob been standing there for like 5-10 mins staring at me and this time she has the shocked sad face of disappointment. When the bus left I thought why she was just staring at me. It then hit and i realized how much of a dumbass I was and realized that she wanted me to talk to her and i’m just like holy shit I’m an idiot. Anyways 2 weeks later my mom picks me up and takes me back to her office and i’m staring at her computer which had the schools district website page. As i’m there staring at the computer screen seeing what events where happening or had happened I see a photo of a group of girls and see a familiar face, it was the girl that tried getting me to talk to her. In my head i’m like damn I sold. The next week and a half I purposely tried to look at her at her hoping maybe she’d notice that I’d be looking at her again, she did. Her second attempt at her trying to get me talking to her, she had put herself close to me again not as close but still close and was staring at me again. I noticed her staring and instantly pussied out. “Holy fuck she’s actually looking at me.” I pretended she wasn’t there and looked at the other direction and had sold again. The third time I was scrolling on my phone again and she was right there infront of me again I didn’t realize till I looked up seeing if my mom was there to pick me up, and boom she was right infront of me again staring. See her staring again I got nervous and looked down on my phone. Looked up again to see if she was staring and yup what do you know she still was. So that was that for a while until recently a few weeks ago I put myself near a bench that’s right infront of the gate where she stands. I wasn’t looking at her cuz I was faced slightly away from her. She was staring at me but I just pretended I didn’t see her. One of my hbs came up to me and I broke that blank robot face I usually have, in the corner of my eye i’m like 80% sure she smiled once she saw me smile and talk to my hb. The week after that on monday I was looking around for her and see her at the side of my eye. She was with one of her friends and they where looking at my direction I don’t know if they where talking about me but they where definitely staring. Then the same week on wednesday as the bus came I see her leaving, I was staring at her and she looked in my direction. She saw me staring at her and stared at me too then got on the bus. I forgot to mention that she doesn’t go to my school she goes to the high school and comes to my campus for cosmetology. She used to be here everyday but since it’s the end of the year I guess she doesn’t need to be here everyday and only comes Mondays and Wednesdays. Yesterday Wednesday , I told myself I was gonna get the balls to finally go up and talk to her. I’d gotten out 15 mins early from class cause the teacher i have last period M and W’s takes forever to dismiss us. Anyways I walked over to the door that we walk out and the security guard stood there waiting for the bell ring to open the door. As I was waiting I see one of her friends she’s always with smiling at someone, unknown to me at the moment it was the girl who I was gonna go up too was standing where I stand at the end of the day again this time exactly where I stand, and facing the direction where the door was. Her friend noticed I was standing at the door and stared at me. The bell rings I walk out, I see her, and IMMEDIATELY walk past her and sit at the bench that’s right next to where i stand. She stands there for another 20 seconds. Her friend was sitting across from where I was sitting and she went to sit with her. My back was faced to them and I was just thinking fuck what do I do, as I was about to look back they got up and walked to the parking lot for students. My hb who I told this situation came up to me and said “go talk to that girl u like.” I told him she’s right there walking, and as I did they turned around. They then came back and I was standing where she stands by the end of the day facing the gate, I look back and take a quick glance at her and i’m pretty sure she was me do this. Anyways by this time the bus was here and everyone piled up at the gate and there she was at the crowd. I was like 4 feet away from her and her friend turned around and saw me staring at her then they went back to their conversation. She got on the bus. Then My hb came up to me and said go on the bus and follow her. See id probably would have done that if I didn’t have to go to Mexico right after school for my stupid braces. And then the bus left. Yea that’s pretty much it, I don’t know if i’ll see her again today, tomorrow or even next week, grades are due this friday for everyone and I don’t see why’d they’d keep bussing kids to a campus they don’t need to go to anymore but maybe i’m wrong. If I see her again should I just go up and say hi to her even if she’s with one her friends? It’s probably more than likely over and that’s probably why she put herself right where I stand to maybe see what would happen. I fucking sold so hard guys i’ll probably never see her again after yesterday. Alice if you come across this post on social media sorry.

2024.05.16 16:49 SIDATI666 $40m founder; telling it like it is.
Hi all, my biz just reach a $40m
valuation after a tonne of hard work but my click-bait title is designed to outline whats wrong in this Sub-reddit.
Unfortunately, most of the content here doesn't represent true entrepreneurs but rather wantrepreneurs that think you need a crazy idea to make it, you have too many great ideas and can't focus, how you make a tonne of cash without working hard.
In this post, I am just going to lay out some home truths in the hope that maybe one person may not waste their hard earned money on a silly idea, or perhaps stop daydreaming and start doing.
Entrepreneurship is NOT about big ideas There are 5.6m
employer firms in the USA, thats at least 5.6m entrepreneurs in the USA. Most of these entrepreneurs have businesses in existing industries. People today have been poisoned by click bait regarding geniuses like Mr. Zuck or Page. & Brin who have dominated their fields and created wealth beyond anyone's wildest dreams yet their ideas weren't original,
Google wasn't the first search engine. It wasn't the second, not even the third.
Successful business is all about execution. A great team with a dull and mundane product are so much more likely to get succeess than a college grad with a big dream.
- If you feel that being an entrepreneur requires a big idea, you are a wantrepreneur
- If you carry a notebook with all yout great ideas, you are a wantrepreneur.
- If you have so many great ideas but just lack focus (also known as as the ability to execute well), you are a wantrepreneur
Every headhunter that starts their own headhunting firm is an entrepreneur and they aren't doing anything massively different, they just back themselves to execute better. Lawyers who make their own practices are entrepreneurs, you don't need to create the next automated legal subscription service to be an entrepreneur.
Either learn a business, get great, save up and then launch a slightly differentiated business or focus on looking for problems in the job you currently are doing.
Stop dreaming, start executing
Successful entrepreneurs spend more time empowering others to build their business A lot of people lurking around this sub seem to relish the idea of bring their big idea to life. I have news for you; this process is maybe 6-18months of your business. The rest is incremental improvements and empowering others to grow your business further.
Maybe you are working in a 9-5 job and dreaming via this sub is a way to keep you sane but remember when you have 100 people working for you, you have 100 people potentially thinking of ways to move to the next thing. Who doesn't want to be a tech millionaire! Remember, you probably think you are under-paid and under-appreciated but every person you employ will think similar!
Even if you have the experience, drive and ingenuity to build the beginnings of a business, you can only grow it so much before you need to rely on others. If you cannot empower those people, you will not execute and you will not succeed.
A manager who knows how to empower and excite their sub-ordinates is so much more value than someone who wants to create 'strategy' all the time. If you don't have this skill yet, you will need a co-founder does or you will need to get more corporate experience
Businesses aren't built for you Many posts on this sub talk are variants of get rich quick schemes or figuring out how to 'side hustle'. At the heart of it, many wantrepreneurs think that working for themselves will bring immense freedom and untold riches.
When you employ 100 people, you are responsible for the livelihoods of 100 people. You are priority 2 vs your staff. Businesses need people and people need to believe that their fearless leader can make great outcomes for them!
Think about that for a second. Are you mature enough to be responsible for 100 families rent or mortgage? Do you realize that a silly decision on your side could actually create financial hardship for others?
If your business is not built to make your employees lives better, your great employees will churn out and your business and you will not succeed.
When you look at your spreadsheet imaginging the $100m net income from your online bow-tie emporium, just remember, those 'staff' numbers will become real people. Be prepared to look after them.
Managing your staff well is worth 100x that zany, crazy idea.... soz
Why do you want to be an entrepreneur? I think that by now I can call myself a successful entrepreneur and while I am a wealthy human on paper, I am grinding and saving like everyone else. In fact, my sister who is a few years younger than me and who works in law earns triple what I do whilst complaining that she doesn't have the work freedom.
If you just want to be wealthy, without the hassle of all the above, try your best to get into those premier industries and make a career out of it. If you aren't fortunate enough to be able to move into Law, medicine, finance etc then excel at what you are currently doing and then do exactly the same thing yourself.
I think that is enough of a rant. Dreaming is great because the thought of being successful can fill that emotional void but unfortunately it isn't real. Furthermore, if you think that being an entrepreneur means being the next Zuck or equivalent, you are essentially trying to replicate 0.01% of successful entrepreneurs as opposed to the 99.99% unsung business owners out there
Good luck to all!

2024.05.16 16:45 throwaway70880 Last name dilemma
Hello
wedding,
I (27F) recently got married to my husband (29M) who I love very much. We're pretty much on the same page as a couple, however I'm having a dilemma about our last name since the wedding.
I always knew that I would never want to drop my last name after getting married as I have my college degrees and other career work in my maiden name. We talked about it a few months prior to the wedding and my husband agreed and understood this; why would I want to sabotage my progress by abandoning my birth name? I was however, willing to hyphenate my name with his. My husband was happy with this compromise and he even went a step further and offered to hyphenate his name with mine as well so we'd end up with the same last name. Even though I thought this was a bit weird (because in my culture men don't change their name when getting married), I was okay with it as long as he was happy with it.
Fast forward a few weeks before the wedding and I discover the amount of admin and paperwork it would take to change my name. Suddenly, I didn't feel like changing my name at all. I told this to my husband and he became visibly upset. I asked him why and his response was "Because I wanted us to share a family name and was willing to share the burden of changing name to do so". While this did make me feel bad, I still wanted to stand by my decision. He said he would still go ahead with hyphenating his even if I don't. I told him I would feel bad if he went ahead with that, but he insisted he wanted a shared name even if it was partial and on hm. We didn't bring up the topic again.
Now fast forward again after the marriage and he stayed true to his word and has changed his name. I'm now in a real dilemma; I feel bad that he went ahead with something I decided not to do which makes the situation feel incredibly one-sided and I feel that out of guilt I should reciprogate. On the other hand, did he maybe do this knowing I would feel guilty and make me change my mind? I just don't get why something like this should matter so much. I never had anything against hyphenating my name, but I just can't be bothered to deal with the admin.
Am I being unreasonable or are my feelings justified?

Backstory:
Born at a poor floating slum, he was banished when his parents discovered he was a Totem Human (Totem Humans are bad in this part, like Rock Humans, but Maren was a good one instead). At age 12, he managed to learn how to build a flyer by his own (Flyers are the most important equipment for an average person, as it allows people to fly through the landless earth). But despite that he was a Totem Human, he managed to sneak in Gatzabora (The most modern, biggest floating city on Maragora (the name of the planet), spanning as big as Crete (island)), and lived his life there. He went for college, schools, but kept getting rejected because of his identity as a Totem Human, but despite all of that, when he was travelling to Oskor (another floating city, inhabited by Avian-Humans), he met a female Avian-Human, named LanNiao Trusyen, and an average romance meeting, bumping into each other, books fell (Maren managed to get in a university instead of a college), etc. But, when he was walking down a street, he suddenly got drowned by a flood, gaining a strange energy (that energy being Anarchy Rainbow), this of course freaked out Trusyen, but after knowing that he had a stand, he became more serious, but more wholesome. And now, these 2 are a couple, stories will be developed, JoBros will be made! New stands will be discovered! Who knows what will.....

2024.05.16 16:37 tiredoflife003 Does he have a crush on me?
So, I recently came to know through my college's confessions page that this guy has a crush on me ( idk if it's true or not, could be an allegation). So, after that I started to consider things and I noticed that his friends annoyed him around me, tried making him sit next to me in class and recently I helped him with some work and after a few days when i asked for some assignment related work in the class group he decided to text me personally with it but before that we've never talked although, I've noticed him staring a few time but never really talked. What do you guys say? Thanks🤍

2024.05.16 16:37 MyClericalGnomance Beginners guide to unlocking the golden dice in honour mode.
Introduction
The main purpose of this guide will be to help unlock the golden dice for those of you who feel less confident about tackling honour mode. This is designed to be a path of least resistance, so we won’t be experiencing everything this game has to offer. It’s also worth noting that instead of focusing on min-maxing for damage; we prioritise safe & consistent damage. We don’t need to be respeccing characters often, if at all, and we won’t be relying on strength elixirs. My girlfriend (
u/-babyjanehudson) and I put this together as we’ve beaten honour mode a 5 times now without any failed attempts, we were even in the first 800 people to beat it which is kinda cool! Here’s how we did it. First starting with our builds, then a little general advice and finally just a list of some general Do’s & Don’ts. Apologies for the wall of text.
Builds:
[Bardlock](https://www.reddit.com/BG3Builds/s/pMh6196Xp8) (party face) - Great old one Warlock 2, college of lore bard 10 - Cha16>Dex16>Con14>Wis12 - Key items are the spell sparkler until Markoheshkir, potent robe, quickspell gloves, necklace of elemental augmentation & the warped headband of intellect (great for general party face checks in acts 1+2) at least until you get the birthright at sorcerers sundries in act 3. Once I reach act 3 and have persuaded half of the shadow cursed lands into dying, I personally choose to respec into Sorlock: 2 goolock, 2 fighter, 8 draconic sorcerer. It’s not necessary but I find it gives the edge in combat while in act 3, as there are less dialogue checks available that bard can abuse. Being a sorlock means every morning in camp I can convert ALL level 1+2 spell slots into extra sorcery slots meaning my bonus action is now always being used for eldritch blast thanks to quickened spell meta magic plus we have action surge :) Skill priority for this character is Persuasuion > Intimidation > Deception > Performance > Perception > Investigation. Credit to u/kethrynweryn for this build, it’s easily my fav in the game.
Life cleric 12 - Wis16>Con16>Dex14>Str (light cleric does more damage so is technically better for experienced players but a life cleric is there to save your run in case of an emergency, something pretty invaluable to beginners in HM as we can’t assume we are winning every fight in the first 2 turns like we ideally aim to)
- key items are reapers embrace, sentinel shield, hell riders pride, the whispering promise & blood of lathander. Other items of note would be luminous armor & the radiant/illumation rings. Most fights will simply involve casting spirit guardians at its highest level and running through crowds of enemies like you’re mowing a lawn, picking up the war caster feat is brilliant for helping you keep concentration when taking attacks of opportunity but i know as a feat it’s a little divisive, just my personal preference. This setup trivialises all combat encounters in act 2. Just remember to check enemies for radiant retort, they’re few and far between but can fuck things up if you forget.
Swords Bard Archer (Lockpicker) - 6 Swords Bard, 4 Rogue Thief, 2 Fighter - Dex17>Cha14>Con14>Wis12>Str - Key items are hag hair (+1dex), titan string, risky ring, hill giant club, helm of arcane acuity & band of the mystic scoundrel. With this setup every time you attack, you can hold person, fear, vicious mockery or invisibility as a bonus action :) Just make sure to use your slashing flourish as much as possible to maximise damage. Don’t forget to get to the high ground whenever possible to increase your damage.
Skill priority for this character is Sleight of hand > Stealth > Perception > Persuasion > Intimidation > Deception > Acrobatics
Barbarian - Wild heart Bear Barb 8, Battle Master Fighter 4 - Str16>Con16>Dex14>Wis12 - Key items are more flexible here as it’s less dependant on gear. I recommend grabbing the Everburn blade if you can, it really helps during the slog of act 1 (to get it easily, when you first find Shadowheart on the nautiloid immediately swap any one of the spells in her book for Command, then use command drop on Zhalk and steal his sword. I do not recommend trying to fight him for it) Most the time you’ll just wear the usual barb stuff, bracers of defence & a 2H weapon of your choice. If you’re willing to brave Raphael & Ansur this build becomes a powerhouse with the gauntlets of hill giant strength, amulet of health & Baldurans giantslayer. These items are incredible but are also locked behind fights which pose the highest risk to your run, prepare carefully and if you don't feel confident enough then don’t be ashamed to just skip them. Anyway we take wild heart bear because being resistant to everything but psychic damage is really underrated. You can use this character to abuse the poor souls that your swords bard has been using hold person on for easy crits. Make sure to *always* use reckless attack. Initially it sounds bizarre but stick with me, you want enemies to have advantage against your barb, doing this while keeping your AC capped around 17~19 means the computer always prioritises attacking your Barb over the rest of your party (all your other characters should have AC19-23ish by act 2). Not to mention if you’re always using reckless attack, the feat Great Weapon Master no longer has a downside, so it becomes a reliable +10 to damage.
Final note for builds: As you’ve probably noticed, yes almost everybody in the party takes a dip in fighter for access to action surge & shield proficiency.
I learned this habit from Colby like everything else I know. He’s the Bob Ross of DnD builds and well worth your time.
General Advice
The most important factor in honour mode is “meta knowledge”, This means things like: knowing how to enter each combat effectively, making sure everyone is in a good position before starting, knowing exactly which enemies/spells you’ll face during that fight and ensuring you always take the enemy by surprise to gain a free turn. Being properly prepared is better than any build. As for difficulty, Act 1 is always going to be your biggest challenge so use plenty of rests and pick your fights carefully. For this guide I also recommend using your bard to persuade the act 2 bosses into
committing suicide. Do’s:
- Always have a these spells prepared: longstrider, aid, enhance ability, bless, misty step, heroes feast, counterspell, shield & guidance.
- Buy the ring of bless from Volo the moment you meet him at the grove.
- Steal Laezel’s armor at the start if you’re not using her, it’s great medium armor in the first few hours.
- Let Volo take your eye for a permanent see invisibility buff.
- Barbarian should always use reckless attack
- Buy & craft every potion of speed you can get your grubby mitts on. With the slight nerfs to Haste in HM potions of speed are a safer alternative.
- Take the Hag hair +1dex for swords bard and most the time just let Ethel have Mayrina, its fiddly to control who Ethel will offer the deal to so just go in being prepared to sacrifice Mayrina.
- Talk to crusher outside the goblin camp and persuade him to kiss your feet. He'll run off embaressed, follow him to the bridge away from all the other goblins. Now you can safely and easily kill him to loot his ring which increases movement speed.
- Use your party face to poison the goblin camp in act 1, killing over half of them outside before even entering combat and then the party face can simply deny everything.
- Look up the wiki page for every boss and check their legendary resistances/actions BEFORE starting the encounter. Ethel, inquisitor w’wargaz, cazador, steel watch titan & Nether brain specifically can do some seriously nasty stuff that’s exclusive to HM & can easily catch you off guard.
- Kill Balthazar in his room/lab where you first meet him. To make the fight even easier you can take flesh into the self same trial using the bell so you don’t have to fight him alongside Balthazar. Either way it’s a much easier than the fighting in the shadowfell.
- Take alert if someone has a spare feat available, otherwise increasing your main ability score is usually the best bet.
- Cast sanctuary on Isobel during the raid on the last light in, a lot easier than chasing after her trying to heal & blade ward her. Alternatively ignore her altogether, go straight to ambush against the drider, grab the lantern and release dolly dolly dolly, allowing you to skip the Isobel & Marcus’s fight altogether.
- Keep characters ability scores in even values when possible, odd values do not change anything (with a slight exception to constitution as odd values still give a little extra hp).
- Try to keep all characters at 12 Wis or higher to avoid being feared, charmed or hold person’d.
- Cast darkness over Halsins portal to prevent enemies attacking it.
- Take Gortash's deal to skip his fight & the steel foundry.
- Use minor illusion to group enemies together & pull them out of position before initiating combat. You can also use this method to fix broken NPC’s when they’re not standing where they’re meant to. Looking at you Alfira & Lakrissa.
- If you’re open to a little cheesing you can leave some ranged/throwing party members on the steps before the Grym boss fight. Now just rain hell down on the boss from safety.
- Globe of invulnerability is exactly as broken as it sounds. These scrolls restock daily at sorcerers sundries & trivialise every boss encounter in act 3. Ansur specifically has no way of countering this.
- Illithid powers. These wriggly little cuties are some of the strongest buffs/abilities available. I recommend having every possible party member take atleast: favourable beginnings, luck of the far realms, ability drain & cull the weak. If you opt to go half illithid then you get access to some outrageous kit such as: fly, psionic dominance, illithid expertise & blackhole.
- Summon any minions before casting Aid, Heroes feast, Longstrider & other morning buffs.
- Use your potions, elixirs & scrolls as much as possible. They’re literally everywhere & with good reason. A well timed potion of invisibility or scroll of misty step can save a run.
- Most people know this already but don’t forget you can throw healing potions at allies in a pinch.
- Before descending the stairs to Cazador’s fight have a party member go invisible. They can run over and free Astarion before rolling initiative. This method can also be used to free Volo, Mayrina, Aylin or set up smokepowder barrels for a one turn kill.
- Use darkness to cover any pickpocketing and then flee the area before the NPC notices they've been got.
- Only trade with vendors using your highest persuasion character.
- Give your frequently visited vendors a few hundred gold to max out their attitude. this way you have the best prices for both buying and selling.
- Remember you can skip the final fight altogether using the dialogue option (important distinction) to blow Gale up at the brain stem in act 3.
Don’ts:
- Don’t awaken at the Zaithisk unless you’re certain you can make the checks, there is a [great guide on respeccing for this exact moment](https://www.reddit.com/BaldursGate3/s/7uQ7MSzzBg) credit to u/kodiak3393.
- Don't use friends, guidance or any other spell when bargaining with Ethel for Mayrina & the hag hair. It will trigger Ethel's legendary action and prevent you from getting the hag hair.
- Don’t free Orpheus unless you're prepared to also fight the Emperor in the final fight.
- Don’t play as durge for the first time. Worth noting the cloak exclusive to durge is easily the best in the game but being durge throws the player some unexpected curveballs that can end a run if you're not prepared.
- Don’t keep sharpshooter toggled on permanenlty unless you’ve got risky ring or oil of accuracy.
- Don’t try & save the gondians, don’t go to the iron throne, do not pass go, do not collect £200
- Don’t underestimate Flind the and other Gnolls who are attacking Rugan in act 1, you ideally want to be level 4 before this fight. Ensure to start the encounter from insidde the cave where Rugan is trapped, it can be accessed from the area near the fake paladins of tyr & Karlach.
- Don’t use the cantrip Friends unless you plan on immediately leaving the area or killing the target.
- Don’t convince Ketheric to commit suicide at the mindlfayer colony. Instead use the first phase of the fight to get into position & takeout the Mindflayer asasp then get to work on the apostles. Makes phase 2 infinitely easier.
- Don’t talk to Wulbren or the Tieflings in the Moonrise prison until you’ve killed the warden and all the guards . These guards are utterly brain dead and somehow will never inform anyone upstairs of your massacre, regardless of how stealthily or raucously you tackle them. So just go hog wild. This’ll secure your potent robe with ease.

Vivid, brave and propulsive, Vuong's poems contend with personal loss, the meaning of family, and the value of joy in a perennially fractured American spirit. The author of the critically acclaimed poetry collection Night Sky with Exit Wounds, winner of the 2016 Whiting Award, the 2017 T. S. Eliot Prize and a 2019 MacArthur fellow, Vuong writes directly to our humanity without losing sight of the current moment. Bold and prescient, and a testament to tenderness in the face of violence, Time is a Mother is a return and a forging-forth all at once.” 6pm

2024.05.16 16:29 Vast_Ad_660 My child is addicted to video games, and I am crushed.
Wow! This turned out so long and was helpful to write when I was feeling really really awful an hour ago. Here it goes:
I’ve been following this page and a few others once I saw information on video game addiction a few months ago. I saw my family and step-son in so many of the stories, my heart and mind was transformed. I don’t feel alone and my son is certainly not alone in his struggles. To be honest I’m scared to start this new journey, and I’ll get to that more later.
I always knew something was different about my step-son’s gaming, and it’s been a struggle since 2-3 years old based on what his Dad has told me. Here’s a bit of a background of our family dynamic.
Jake had Pete when he was 19 and never had a relationship with Mom, Kate. They split custody and it was evident she was using hard drugs and lost full custody of Pete when he was 9. A lot of his time with Mom was spent on an iPad without regulation as early as 2. Routines, locations, and security was not always present. It’s tough to think about the severity of what Pete experienced. At this time school was difficult, and Pete was diagnosed with ADHD. Meds helped a lot, and once Jake had full custody he was all about routine routine routine, healthy foods, activities, table top games nightly, camping, you name it! His passion for being a single Dad to Pete is why I ultimately fell in love with him two years later. When I started hanging out I noticed Pete playing a lot of games and not being the sporty type or hanging out with friends. By this point he was playing Minecraft after school and on the weekends pretty regularly. Jake was a good video game police officer and we still had a ton of time together as a new family. Pete is kind and very easy going and we started a great relationship fairly quickly. Jake and I agreed and often disagreed about the severity of Pete’s gaming, but we would come together and set some house rules and go on with life. As soon as we got busy, Pete would dive deep into computer games and grades would drop. We would see feces in his underwater, lack of hygiene, not getting up, laptop under his pillow, exc. Almost like clockwork by spring break, we’d have this intense struggle and Pete would pull it together for the semester at the very last minute. Pete is gifted and was always in accelerated math and science glasses, but was able to do the bare minimum without studying. Repeat for the next 3 years. Fast forward to High School he went to a smaller school in a new town and actually saw more independence. He made a friend, Dan who’s still around and is everything you’d hope a friend would be to your kid. Their bond is awesome. We’d still have to police but things were getting easier and we weren’t seeing those intense “downs” like we were in elementary and middle school. I think he was more confident and even his teachers said he was crushing it! The summer was tough and we tried to fill his time up but nothing seemed to interest him. If he hung out with friends and was hygienic we just made nudges about time limits. Thinking back I think there was one more period where we found feces in his underwater end of Senior year and gaming picked up, probably because we dropped our guard.
Summer before college I got him set up with an awesome outdoor job working on a zipline/climbing course and he thrived in Pete’s type of way. Climbing is one of the only things I can suggest to Pete and he’ll usually show some interest. Confident, peppy, excited, getting himself up. Always going back to games everyday but maintaining work, a friendship, and a little independence is what we wanted so left him alone most of the home time. We nudged him into a climbing retreat as an incoming freshman to give him a head start making friends, and a clear head going into the dorms! Scary fun times, and thought it would help. Then we officially dropped him off. Wow, so many smiles and happy tears had by all. The light in his eyes and showing us around and saying how cool he felt it was probably the happiest day of our lives along with my wedding day. The day I read vows to Pete saying I’d be there forever and unconditionally. It felt like my son was ready for his future. As we were driving away Pete said his friend gave him a gaming computer for free and he was at the tech center getting it hooked up to the campus internet. Dun dun dun.
Today he’s 2 weeks into his first summer break after a year of college. Yikes. Things are not great and that’s why I am here.
It was Spring Break (here comes the pattern) and Pete was gaming, not verbally making much sense, unhygienic, lost weight, gaming non stop. He almost missed his 2 hour bus ride back to school and that’s when we snapped. The typical what the hell is going on, you’re out of control. Pete usually cries when this happens because he knows the gig is up. Eventually he told us the truth, he failed two classes his first semester (told us winter break he did fine) and is now on track to fail another science and lab. WHAT!! We drove out there the next day to meet with the dean because he told us he was on probation and we wanted to support him. We were so worried. It turns out he hasn’t had any social interaction other than winter and spring break and spent his days alone in his dorm. He didn’t even seem like himself it was so scary. We get there and we spent two days walking, going out to eat, the typical “you got this buddy” “just stop playing games for a bit” and insert the other 100 life sayings you want to say to your kid that sound so annoying to them. We can’t help it. We love him. He was like yep I got this, nodded through all of it and we left. Three weeks later we noticed on the phone things were sounding off again, and he confessed he hasn’t made up any of his work. His Dad got disappointed on the phone and Pete said he called the suicide hotline because he was getting “yelled” at. I was standing there, he wasn’t yelling but I’m sure just the sheer reality of the situation got to him. We were heart broken, and at the same time angry. We couldn’t believe he was feeling this much anxiety and possibly depression. We always knew gaming was an escape and most likely due to his background, but this just seemed too much for anyone to handle. Again, he promised to limit himself. We checked in everyday for the last three weeks not with a nag but just, how’s it going. Did you set a timer today? Amazing that’s great you’re so close to being done!! Just trying to keep it super positive. We knew it was totally out of our control. He failed, and actually never made up the work his professor said he could over a month prior. He lied more.
We knew something had to change and we were preparing his return home. Can we do game quitter? Can we just put him right into a detox in our home? Family therapy? Healthy gamer? Olganon? We wanted to smash his computer trust me, if it weren’t for my job I wouldn’t have wifi because my stomach is in knots. But, we decided relationship first, let him set his own limits (with our house rules) and really try to get to the root cause of anxiety and depression. We had good convos, we let him tell us how it’s basically all of our fault because of the pressure, no judgement. We communicated with notes and texts sometimes when things were getting frustrating. He skirted around the 3 hour daily limit every possible way. All he wants to do is play video games, watch to tube of video games, talk to “friends” on discord about games, play D&D online, or draw D&D characters. It’s just too much, it’s impossible to limit. He always had an excuse for a screen and we were still seeing 10+ hours a day on screens. He told us he’s feeling crappier everyday by us, and honestly we’re feeling freakin awful and exhausted too.
What now? Nothing. I’m literally doing nothing anymore starting today. I can’t stop crying. He won’t do his own research into gaming addiction and does not want to change. Today we just said ya know what, this isn’t working so we’ll just figure something out in a few weeks. At this very moment he’s going on hour 9 of gaming straight. Knowing how much we tried as a family to limit this for the last few weeks. I’m still angry and it’s hard to look at him right now. It feels personal to me? I know it isn’t, but it just feels that way.
Therapy!? Yep. We tried. Back when he was in middle school and high school. Didn’t want to go back and didn’t talk much. He got his own therapist at school per the deans suggestion and he goes but the one session he’s had at home, he got off within 30 minutes and said “he didn’t have much to talk about with her” and he’ll see her maybe once a month back at school. We are doing healthy gamer coaching as parents, but he is refusing to sign up for coaching on his end. My guess is the name alone. The risk of losing games is not something he’d ever discuss right now. I swore up and down they won’t make him get rid of games lol! Did not work.
What’s dad doing? Half. Literally half at all times we make a plan at night and in the morning and check in with each other about it all day long. It’s so exhausting and Jake is just ready to do whatever it takes at this point as well. He’s having the same struggles as I am and is 100% convinced it’s an addiction and has listened to a lot of podcasts exc.
My new plan…. Because I have to have “something” or I might blow up. Now I have to let natural consequences take the lead. He doesn’t have a license, because he couldn’t pick up driving skills with how his brain is on games. We tried teaching him for two years and it was honestly dangerous sometimes after a “bender. He asked me to go tomorrow and after 9 hours I’m just going to say I’d feel more comfortable if he went to driving school and he can pay with the money he earns this summer. It j=is just not safe, why does he deserve to take my car and put me in an unsafe position? I don't have to allow that... but it feels like I am still the bad guy. Looking forward, IF he fails college....when he is home he cannot have our wifi, will contribute to groceries, phone bill, and rent. We live in a rural area and without a car he can’t work. I will not be driving a 20 year old to and from work due to his brain on games. It feels wrong. Maybe he can’t support his habit without working. That’s all the “what ifs” but rarely does life go exactly how you picture it. We will just continue to get creative and roll with it.
Does anyone have any advice on how to not enable but also let them be in charge of their own destiny? Not saying anything or giving him a sad look feels impossible but I did it tonight. J was able to pretend it did not bother me that he’s been on there forever. I think I can keep that up? But I also don’t want to enable him.
My family is hurting so much. So many hugs to anyone who struggled and is currently struggling. Same to the parents who have that knot that won’t go away. Thanks for reading
