2024.05.16 18:36 UpAcreek62 READ this before you accept!

Salut à tous, My goal in this post is to share my raw TAPIF experience from this year now that I’m home and have reflected. I will be listing challenges that I and others faced (I’ll be discussing the cons rather than the pros).
For reference, I’m American and was placed in primary in the Académie d’Orléans-Tours. I had already worked 8-5 in a school the previous year so I came in with a fair amount of savings and work experience working in language schools.
• You might have to act as the sole English teacher of your school(s). This includes creating curriculum sometimes from scratch with little to no guidance. The term “assistant” can be very misleading. At the primary level it is unfortunately uncommon that you will be leading 30+ students per class while the teacher uses this time for a coffee break. Some might think you are an intervenant(e) and not an assistant(e) who takes over the whole classroom even though they have worked with assistants in the past. Even your principals might not know your role (or care). It’s your responsibility to advocate for yourself in order not to be taken advantage of and break the cycle so the next assistant doesn’t have to go through this.
• You might have a housing crisis. I arrived and spent nearly $2000 to stay in an airbnb for a month. I didn’t have a French guarantor and with the low tapif salary it is virtually impossible to find an apt through an agency. They will reject you. I did the online guarantor called “VISALE” and they granted me a max rent of 380€ a month. I applied to live with two French roommates “en coloc” but couldn’t be accepted as the rent was 450€ and VISALE granted me 380. I eventually was so desperate to have a permanent address (for bureaucratic stuff) that I found an apt on leboncoin with an independent landlord who didn’t need me to supply any guarantor. The rent only had water included and was 820€ a month (the entirety of our monthly salary). I had to, with any help, order and install the wifi and tv box and set up an electricity account through EDF. BEWARE if you didn’t know- electricity/heating in France is extremely expensive. I ended up having to keep my heat around 15 C (59 F) in order to not have the bill exceed 100€ per month during the cold months (I.e. the duration of our assistantships). When I moved out 2 weeks ago, the landlord blew up on me saying everything was “dégueulasse” or disgustingly filthy- which surprise it wasn’t- it’s a typical tactic to take money out of your initial deposit (dépôt de garantie), which plans on doing. You will be vulnerable as a foreigner in this position. I would recommend not renting an apt by yourself unless it’s last resort as it was for me.
• The nature of the program can be very isolating. As others have emphasized, this is NOT any way similar to a study abroad. No one is keeping tabs on you or making sure you are adjusting well. Depending on your schools and schedule, you might not be able to form close relationships with your colleagues either. You MUST be okay with spending time by yourself in a foreign country. Many people end up leaving at Christmas because of these difficulties, usually citing they have a “family situation” to tend to back at home. I encourage you, if single, to try to befriend or date French nationals, as it will provide extra support and protection to you as a foreigner living in France.
• Mental Health- just to expand on my point above, you will need decent mental health to complete this program. If you are on medication it’s best to see if you can ween off before coming to France as certain meds are hard to find or impossible for doctors to prescribe. For example, adderall, for ADHD, is virtually impossible to have prescribed in Europe.
• Seasonal Depression- Unless you are from the Pacific Northwest in the US, you are more than likely going to experience some seasonal depression as the majority of France becomes very gloomy during the months of the assistantship. If you are from California, Florida, or anywhere in the south of southwest, you will more than likely miss seeing the sun more than once a week. In my region, it wasn’t uncommon for it to rain several times a week with no glimpse of the sun. Of course, if you are placed in the Côte d’Azur or DOM TOMs this will not apply to you.
• Incompetent Prof Refs/Conseillère Pédagogique your person of contact who will meet with at the beginning of the program may very well be misinformed and useless. I was told by people at my rectorat that I wouldn’t receive my carte vitale (health insurance) as it’s only for French nationals. When I tried to explain that we are all entitled to health insurance with this job they became combative with me. Again ADVOCATE for yourself!!! I learned more from the WhatsApp chat and Facebook group than I ever did asking my schools or local rectorat for help. I would have literally NEVER received my carte vitale if I had listened to my “superiors” in this program. They told me incorrect things several times.
Thank you for reading this far! These are some of the realities I and others encountered. I plan on making a list of pros as well if anyone would be interested. (:

2024.05.16 18:36 iam_batman27 The best Web development curriculum - After O/Ls ?

This post will be useful for anyone trying to learn web development or seeking a career change.

small advice for After O/Ls - You have 6-8 months until the results are released..spend your time wisely. Don't spend it scrolling through Instagram and watching all the movies you missed while studying for O/Ls. Take a 10-day break, including 5 days to plan the next 6 months. If you aren't in the Maths or Bio stream, don't worry about going to classes because other streams will start another batch for students joining after O/Ls. Don’t get caught up to normalizing. "I don't know what's my purpose..." Basically, you won't find something you don't search for. If you waste time scrolling through, looking at people who say, "I'm 25 and I don't know my purpose," while they've found a purpose and are making money from it.Try different things. You haven't tried anything yet “you say you don't know what your purpose is” – batman. Just think for a moment.

theodinproject.com offers a full-stack web development curriculum, completely free from start to end unlike some other courses that gives you only an introduction this curruclum teaches you everything from how to deploy to how to get hired. Full-stack in the sense you will learn to develop the front end and the backend. To put how great this curriculum and the tools they teach you can literally develop a clone of any social media platform Best part they make you do that and with project like that in your portfolio/CV you will just get a job easily. The best thing about this curriculum is that it's developed using the newest technologies are being used and the curriculum is regularly updated. In this course, you will learn tools and technologies that aren't even taught in 10-lakh private degrees. A small rant about private degrees…don't choose that path if you want to learn. They are the worst. They taught us nothing, just some old tools not even used in the market, the oldest versions possible and no one cares about your degree in the IT field. So yeah, The Odin Project. It will take approximately 8 months to 1 year to fully complete, and with the knowledge and the projects they do, you can land a job, even remotely. The best part is they also teach you how to get hired…they have a sperate module that teaches you how to get hired don’t believe me check this out. What they teach are is so advanced that if you apply to jobs in Sri Lanka, you will just get in. It's a project-based curriculum, which means you will put into practice everything you learn; therefore, you get hands-on experience. This curriculum will teach you how to think like a programmer, and etc. I highly recommend everyone to check it out. This curriculum is really good that it can be a starting point for any development apps, games or even if you want to start a startup. You can develop powerful complex websites using the technologies they teach. FOR ANYONE THINKING AI IS COMING, WEB DEVELOPMENT IS NO FUTURE.....bruhhh just name something online that isn't a website. From Reddit , instagram , OPEN AI even Office 365 is a website. You think AI can replace developers to create complex websites like these? Nah, not yet, at least not for another 50 years. Simply put, accountants didn't disappear when calculators were invented. AI will be like a calculator to developers…it will make your work easy, and people will evolve with that, but it's not anywhere near to replacing developers. Read through the link below.
Read through the introduction they have explained everything better than I have - https://www.theodinproject.com/lessons/foundations-how-this-course-will-work
My recommended path for anyone interested in this curriculum
Do this Python course first - https://cs50.harvard.edu/python/2022/
it will make your journey easier learning languages, as Python is the easiest language to learn. So, when you understand the basics easily, you can quickly learn other languages because basics are the same in every language, literally.
Then, go through this curriculum, do the foundation part. If you like web development, continue and choose the Node.js path because in Sri Lanka, you can find jobs easily for this framework as it's more popular. So, as a backup plan, if you don't land a job abroad, you can land a job in Sri Lanka easily like I said, if you don't like.. well, you know what programming is and how basic websites are developed, and you can develop too.
Spend your time wisely, thanks.

2024.05.16 18:35 Confused_myannn Should i even consider preparing for CAT?

So I’m a GEM(General Engineer Male). I’ll graduate in a month with 8 gpa in a tier 3 yet well known college in my state. I scored 9.8 gpa in my 10th and 92% in 12th. I’ll start working as an associate engineer at a software company(5 lpa). I recently started researching about preparing for cat as I want to attempt the cat 2025. I have been seeing a lot of people not even getting calls even when they scored 99% plus since they were GEMS. So I was wondering if I should even consider preparing for CAT and aim for IIMS or should i prepare for GMAT and plan my studies abroad or in ISB? Please let me know anything that might help me.

2024.05.16 18:34 Sea-Awareness-3128 Exam season advice?

I’m 15 and haven’t had a great relationship with food in the past. I used to be overweight and was bullied quite badly, ended up developing an ED and losing a lot of weight. I’m currently 5 9 and around 136 pounds. Exam season is coming up and I usually gain quite a lot of weight during this time as eating excessive amounts of food somehow comes along with studying. Any tips on how to just maintain my weight for the next 3 weeks. Im happy enough with how I look right now and would be thrilled if I could just stay this weight until summer comes. I‘m planning on making a plan on my meals for the next 3 weeks and would be glad for some advice on foods that will fill me up and stop me binging. I’ll probably eat around 1800 calories each day.

2024.05.16 18:25 Yurii_S_Kh Iconographer Ekaterina Titova: "Bulgaria is wonderful! Love it and cherish it!"

Iconographer Ekaterina Titova:
https://preview.redd.it/y5s2vevsdt0d1.png?width=925&format=png&auto=webp&s=d200730473706ba88523ad8511c0f5740ab9a6b5
The tangents between biology and ecclesiastical icon-painting are unknown and incomprehensible to those who are devoted to science. For Ekaterina Titova, a doctor of biological sciences accustomed to approaching everything through logic, religious devotion comes naturally, through music, because she was a singer in the choir of St Nicholas' Cathedral in the French city of Nice. At first, Katya sang without understanding the meaning of the songs. She began asking questions, but no one gave her answers. So her thirst for knowledge led her to enrol as a non-matriculating student at the St Genevieve Theological Seminary of the Russian Orthodox Church in Paris. Studying there opened her eyes to the path she wanted to take. At the end of her first year, the priest of the church where she continued to sing gave her his blessing to run a Sunday school. When she teaches the children the catechism, she paints with them at the end of each lesson. So, in addition to singing and teaching Sunday school, she began to study icon painting in Paris:"Teaching made me realise how important it is to tell them about love, about God - says Ekaterina Titova in a special interview for Radio Bulgaria. - The children I teach are bilingual, some of Russian origin, some of Bulgarian. There are those with mixed Italian-French backgrounds. They navigate between several languages, speaking one at school and another at home, sometimes even juggling two or three languages at home. Sometimes it is very difficult for them to understand who they are. That's why I told them that regardless of nationality, the Orthodox faith is at the core of who they are. And that was very important to them - they had that light in their eyes and that was all they needed to hear. I told them that the Orthodox Church is their home in every corner of the world.
https://preview.redd.it/d54zfrsxdt0d1.png?width=850&format=png&auto=webp&s=4a012243219a733bcf86f8464ab6e70ff3461d10
And now we arrive at the question: What sets a believer apart from a non-believer?"A believer, in my view, embodies kindness and strives to perform acts of goodness," Katya responds. "They engage in prayer and possess a deeper understanding of their surroundings. In contrast, a person without faith may feel lost, navigating through life like in a maze without finding an exit. A believer possesses clarity regarding their purpose in life and what awaits them beyond, guiding their actions and decisions. We are all beckoned towards truth; it's as if God implants this seed of truth within each of us, connecting us to Him. I believe that everyone seeks truth, and ultimately, God represents the ultimate truth."After completing her studies at the seminary in Paris, Katya honed her artistic skills through internships at prestigious institutions such as the Academy of Classical Arts in Florence, Italy, and the Academy of Crafts in Moscow, Russia. While studying she realised that to paint well, an artist needs to relax and clear their mind. The icon painter, on the other hand, has to gather a huge amount of materials around him and pray, and then transfer it all to the drawing board.
https://preview.redd.it/orc8ylt3et0d1.png?width=850&format=png&auto=webp&s=393b1d6d38e148367c7757f42cce9db6f83fbc46
Ekaterina Titova's icons are filled with golden light, a symbol of holiness. The colours of the images are soft pastels, because they are meant to inspire prayer. "Vanity is always bright. In icons, the images should be serene, this is my personal view, that's what my heart tells me," says Katya. As well as icons, she also paints scarves, fans and umbrellas.
https://preview.redd.it/t8crc896et0d1.png?width=1067&format=png&auto=webp&s=47f65e94d00e889ec58ceb6a695f0dcf51d25c4a
When she met her husband, Katya lived in Germany and Austria, where she was married by Father Vladimir Tishchuk, the current Primate of the Russian Church in Sofia. It was through Father Tishchuk that she came to Bulgaria and held her exhibition at the Russian Cultural Institute.
https://preview.redd.it/blvruzm8et0d1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=80d8fe9294cdc17a1abc745cbe18ef4a99f7a775
In the meantime she visited Veliko Tarnovo and the Rila Monastery, both of which literally amazed her with their spirituality:"I was in Veliko Tarnovo, the city was amazing, there is such a huge cultural layer. I felt so much joy there. It is the spiritual heart of Bulgaria and I was proud for you to have such a place. It's better than Switzerland, there's such a spirit, just walking down the streets, it's everywhere! The Rila Monastery was also an amazing spiritual experience. It was the first monastery we visited in Bulgaria. Everything there is harmonious and made with love for God - temples, buildings. In the central museum our hearts stopped. Nowhere else in Austria or Germany, or in some of the most breathtaking museums in Europe, have we seen such beauty. And I really believe that. This is a great heritage. Bulgaria is what we saw there. I think it's such a treasure trove of information. The visit was very, very gratifying. We should be proud of this treasure of culture and history and keep it and preserve it.Let's pray to God that somehow things can be put right and arranged in such a way that faith can flourish. It's crucial. I believe that faith is what holds our nation together. Without it, we can easily drift apart, but with faith, we're united with God, which is vital. At the end of our conversation, Ekaterina Titova wished Bulgarians to live in Christ and above all to remember God, their faith and their history. "It is so rich. You have a beautiful country - love it and cherish it".

2024.05.16 18:21 Mobile_Shoddy I wrote a new blog using Next.js App router

I wrote a new blog using Next.js App router
Before I dive into the development journey of my new blog, you might want to check it out first at my blog.
Back in 2020, React introduced Server Components. I was amazed by the possibility of writing asynchronous components.
Writing async components isn't groundbreaking per se; there was a short-lived framework before that used JSX syntax and allowed async components even on the client side.
What was novel, however, was React's support for async components, even though they could only run on the server. At that time, there wasn't a stable framework to leverage this feature. By coincidence, a new project last year required using Next.js. On my recommendation, we adopted the official App Router, seamlessly integrating React Server Components.
To master React Server Components, I decided to rewrite my blog using the App Router. Previously, my blog was built with Astro. Here’s a preview of the old blog.
My requirements for the new blog were:
  1. Fully utilize the App Router and Server Components to optimize performance.
  2. Adopt the latest and cutting-edge technologies.
  3. No backend services.
  4. Make it as visually appealing as possible.
Regarding the first point, Server Components performed admirably.

For the second point, I am currently using:
  1. TailwindCSS — Needs no introduction.
  2. React Aria Components — Not shadcn/ui, nor radix-ui.
  3. /icons-react — Over 5k icons, simply astonishing.
  4. shiki — Updated, more powerful syntax highlighting.
  5. MDX — Write React code within Markdown.
The highlights are MDX and shiki. I aim to include as many code examples as possible in my posts, allowing readers to interact with them. shiki supports numerous plugins like diff, focus, highlight, and the best one is twoslash, which makes code blocks more user-friendly.
MDX and shiki are a match made in heaven. All these effects can run server-side without bundling any js.
For the third point, I employed a novel approach:
Using GitHub Discussions as the Blog Backend
I haven’t seen anyone else using this method. I find it more blog-friendly than using GitHub Issues. It has several distinct advantages:
  1. Permissions Management — Only the author can post content; others can only comment (unlike GitHub Issues).
  2. Categories — GitHub Discussions allows multiple categories (again, unlike GitHub Issues).
  3. Tags — Customizable tags for posts with adjustable colors.
  4. Image Uploads — Pasting an image in the Discussions input box uploads it to GitHub automatically.
  5. Comments — Complete commenting system from GitHub, including likes, replies, and mentions (with slight differences between Discussions and Issues).
Moreover, GitHub provides a robust GraphQL API, enabling blog development with any front-end technology, even a console app.
For the fourth point:
I studied Bento design on Dribbble, drawing inspiration from various Bento-style blogs.
Current missing features in my blog:
  • RSS feed
  • Animations
  • More interesting Bento sections
  • shiki and twoslash styles
If you previewed my blog and found it appealing, you can visit my GitHub repository. It supports one-click deployment and includes a simple forking tutorial.

2024.05.16 18:19 Affectionate_Tea_227 Need help with a build-a-species system for my "Spacepunk" TTRPG!

Hello, how are you guys doing? :)
I'm currently working on a "rules-mid" setting/game that mixes a bunch of stuff I love, like astronomy, speculative evolution, transhumanism, computer science and optimistic nihilism. I would really appreciate some help figuring out my species creation system.
As the game is supposed to be quite customizable and modular, I hope to standardize the species design process so players could make their own homebrew just as easily as I make up official ones. It would eventually be expanded upon.
So...
The thing about this world is there are no humans, only alien species. And there are some guidelines to this whole thing so it fits with the rest of the project.
The rough idea I have so far is:
  1. Players have a set amount of "biopoints" they can use to buy characteristics from a looong list of useful biological features. Things like, swimming, eagle-eye, exoskeleton, prehensile tail, etc. The more useful the feature, the more expensive it is. There should probably be a limit to how many features you can add up.
  2. Players then choose from a list of negative features to balance out whatever goodies they gained on the last step. This mimics the idea that different species are adapted to different niches and should have strengths and weaknesses, but it's mostly because I find it quite fun. Not too sure about this, though.
I would also like to implement some core stats to each species that should help the player, as well as the Guide, know what kind of habitat that species came from, something about what it needs to live, its size variance, ways of movement, language type, and other stuff like that. No idea if this should be bought or just freely chosen.
Any and all incongruities should be boiled down to biotech and the character's super advanced spacesuit taking care of it. Brain interfaces fabricate a common language that should solve language gaps, though the actual language of the species is thematically important. What happens if the suit is damaged? Well, you got me there. How rules-heavy should that "what it needs to live" part be, how can I simplify it?
So that's basically it. What do you think? How would you improve and streamline this? What sort of core stat should I pay more attention to? Feel free to only answer what you find most interesting. Thanks in advance!

Welcome back to Advent's Amazing Advice! The series where I take popular One-Shots, Adventures, Campaigns, etc. and fully prep them for both New and Busy DMs. This prep includes fully fleshed-out notes, music, ambiance, encounter sheets, handouts, battle maps, tweaks, and more so you can run the best sessions possible with the least stress possible!
Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, is a level 1-3 Adventure, the most recent Starter Set, and successor to The Lost Mine of Phandelver released by WoTC. In it, your players will sail to Stormwreck Isle, an island shaped by an age of conflict between Chromatic and Metallic Dragons. They'll be able to befriend kobolds, explore fungal grottos, fight those twisted by Orcus, and perhaps save the very island itself!
Have your players create their own characters or jump right in using the Pre-Gens that are built with backstories integrated into the plot!
If you've used my previous notes, you'll know that I take Adventures such as these and do all the difficult and time-consuming book-to-session conversions, so you don't have to! I do my best to include Ambiance for every scene, custom battle maps, handouts when needed, spell sheets, encounter sheets, and more!
This may all sound familiar, but seeing as this is a Starter Set, I think it's important to reiterate:
Without further ado:
