2024.05.16 12:54 JunebugSeven Rec Request: Town Builder with Villagers

I don't know how to articulate this well, so apologies. I have a Steam Deck, Switch, and PS5, would prefer something I can play handheld though.
I'm looking for a cosy kind of town buildeant farm. A lot of the cosy town builders I see are things like Dorfromantik, which are just creating buildings or shapes, but I'm looking for a town builder with villagers I can watch (like an ant farm).
I've been seeing a lot of Fabledom lately, and I think I want something in that vein, but I've been hearing a lot that even after the 1.0 release there's just not a lot of game there. I want something I can really dig into, or watch play out for a long time.
I've enjoyed The Wandering Village (but again, the villagers themselves don't have any identities, don't marry/die/have kids). I also find a lot of Kairosoft games scratch this itch (especially Dream House Days or Dream Town Island), but they're quite limited.
Are there any other games you can recommend that have a chill town building vibe, but also lets me watch the villagers and see all the little unfoldings of their lives? 😅

2024.05.16 12:47 Apprehensive_Pen4435 Free Fire Old Version v1.57.0 Download for Android All Players

In today’s article we are going to tell you about Free Fire Old Version. Free Fire is a third-person action shooter that is designed to play like an engaging battle royale title. Like many of its relatives it follows a character from right behind them and gives you a good overview of all the activity happening on the map. All the characters in the game are placed on the same island and it is their job to get out of said island alive. In the Free Fire Old Version game,
50 players can be assigned the same map at a time, but they have to fight to the death until only one is left. When maps are filled with 50 people the action can become extremely hectic and it can be difficult for individual players to see what is going on. That being said, as long as your connection is solid you shouldn’t experience much lag. As you know, Free Fire Old Version is a very famous game like BGMI. There is not much difference between the two games but the paths of both are very different Currently we are talking about Free Fire,
so let us tell you that this game has also made people crazy about it all over the world with more than 10Cr+ More people play this game and entertain themselves. Additionally, game managers can make a round last as long as they wish, but most games will probably not last more than 15 minutes. As the time limit begins to decrease, players may begin to behave more and more erratically. This will help make it attractive to those who don’t have time to explore a serious triple-A shooter game like Free Fire Old Version. It presents everything they do in a more concise and enjoyable package.
Download Free Fire Old Version

Ambush, shoot, survive, there is only one goal: to survive and answer the call of duty are all the things you can do in this game to win.

2024.05.16 12:47 RollToReview Five Fast Reviews: Fireball Island, Beyond the Sun, Wyrmspan and more!

Five Fast Reviews: Fireball Island, Beyond the Sun, Wyrmspan and more!
Hi all,
People tell me I write too much about board games. Well, if that's a crime, lock me up and throw away the key! But they also tell me no one wants to read my long, drawn-out reviews.
So here is the tl:dr of the last five games I've reviewed on my website Roll to Review.
https://preview.redd.it/qvxbvsdbpr0d1.jpg?width=840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=daf9877600bf5c624064a25378593008a4837c67
Fireball Island: The Curse of Vul-Kar
Fireball Island is one of the most photogenic board games ever created. It combines three painted plastic pieces together to create an island that rises up from your table. Atop this island, the intimidating volcano temple of Vul-Kar sits ready to spit fireballs and ruin your day.
You play as an idiot tourist who must take three snapshots from around the island and escape before it explodes.
Truly, influencer culture has gone too far.
On your turn, you move around the island board by playing movement cards. As you move, and pass treasure spaces, you pick up treasure tokens that award victory points at the end of the game.
Once you finish moving, you then carry out the card’s ability. This can be flicking marbles at other players, rotating the mountain and palm trees around the island, or cause a Cataclysm.
This latter ability is one of the most fun moments of board gaming. You get to drop marbles into Vul-Kar and watch them roll down the island knocking any player standing in their path. It’s an explosion of noise, anticipation, and excitement that only lasts a second. But it’s exhilarating nonetheless.
Now, the fun of Fireball Island comes from its chaotic nature. Yes, the Cataclysms are a great example of this. But the game is full of risky moments that get you excited.
Where I struggled with the game is that it's too random that it felt like nothing matter. Despite giving you strategic opportunities about how you wanted to move, or what treasures to collect. These choices didn't matter as much as how many fireballs you took to the face. Whether you pioneered a route around the island. Or if you drew the right cards.

Beyond the Sun
Reach for the stars is how you held people up in Wild West, but it's also the premise behind Beyond the Sun. A game where players work together to push humanity into the future.
It's a worker placement game and, more to the point, a technology tree game. You spend most turns researching new technologies or gathering payment for new technologies. These provide immediate bonuses, and additional worker action spaces for future turns.
This part of the game is fantastic.
There's a thrill of uncovering new technologies. Especially when the further you progress up the tree, the more powerful they become. It creates an engine-building feeling but on a much larger scale.
Now, the other part of the game, is to the side of the technology tree. A small space board that resembles a haphazardly put together granny flat only built to earn a little extra rent. However, don’t let appearances fool you, it’s here you can take control of planets and colonise them.
Compared to the technology tree, as well as area-control games in general, this space action felt flat. At best it’s basic, at worst it was distracting. Leaving my gaming group wanting something more, or something better, from an otherwise excellent game.

Sky Team
Sky Team is the two-player cooperative game of landing an airplane and shooting daggers at your partner.
Each round you take turns placing dice around a cockpit. Together you'll deploy flaps, extend the landing gears, change the plane speed and more. With so much going on, it's hard to keep it all straight in your head.
Harder still when you can't communicate with your co-pilot.
It was a lot of fun, and a bit stressful in some of the more difficult scenarios. That's right, Sky Team is a scenario driven game! With a surprising amount of variation. Even after playing 12 scenarios we were still discovering new mechanics.
Sky Team lost a couple points with me and my wife with the between round conversation. There wasn't a lot to strategise or communicate. Something we both enjoy from our cooperative board games.
Otherwise, it's a 10-20 minute blast and gets two thumbs up from me.

Archeos Society
Finally! It's the Ethnos remake we've all been waiting for. With a new theme, art, and components. I couldn't wait for this to be my next favourite game.
A quick recap for those who haven't played Ethnos. You're drawing cards from a market to form and play sets of cards. A set can either be cards of all the same type, or all the same colour.
When you play a set you get points, an ability, and get to establish control in one of the regions on the board.
Ethnos is an excellent game, and highly recommended.
Archeos Society, on the other hand, is proof of the monkey paw's existence. Yes, I got my wish of a refreshed version of one of my favourites. Except it came with rule changes that I'm not so hot about.
Unfortunately, with Archeos Society they gutted the area control portion of the Ethnos. Now instead of battling for regional control, you're moving up different tracks. Removing the tension, interaction between players, and dynamic gameplay from the original.
As a consolation, each of the tracks offers more complex ways to score points. Making it perfect for those who hate confrontation, and not so great for me.

Wyrmspan
Disclaimer: VR Distribution provided me a copy for an honest review.
Wyrmspan has been out for months now. I've reviewed it. Yet somehow, it still feels like a hallucination. Like I'm dreaming there's a game out there exactly like Wingspan, except with dragons.
But I'm not dreaming.
...And there have been quite a few changes from the original bird-based board game.
It roughly follows the same format of collecting winged-creatures to fill three habitats. Only this time, you're dealing with caves. With each cave requiring excavation before a dragon can make it their home.
When you're not excavating or collecting dragons, you'll spend your turn spelunking. Moving a meeple through your caves, activating one dragon’s abilities at a time. Gaining resources and visiting the Dragon Guild so you can afford more caves and dragons.
The change from birds to dragons sent me into shock. Part of the appeal of Wingspan is seeing all the feathered little freaks that inhabit our planet. Wyrmspan is missing that appeal and while the art is beautiful it doesn't measure up.
Gameplay-wise the three rows of Wyrmspan are connected tighter than the original. You can no longer get away with ignoring a row or two without hamstringing your strategy.
Additionally, it felt there was a higher variance in dragon-strength. When combined with the tiny market (only 3 cards!) it felt like some players got an unfair advantage due to what dragons were available.
Finally, while there's more player interaction than Wingspan. There isn't as much as Wingspan plus the Oceania Expansion. As a result, once you fall behind, you're behind for good.
That said, the combo building of Wyrmspan is fantastic. The resource management puzzle is also a treat, as you are always on the lookout for your next payday.
So despite its flaws, which will put some people off, I enjoyed Wyrmspan a lot.
Rating: 4/5

That's a wrap!

2024.05.16 12:43 irfanrendrawan Opinion Needed for USA Family Trip In June

Hey everyone! I would like your opinion for my upcoming family trip itinerary. Any do’s / dont's, hidden gems, attraction passes, safety matters, suggestions or current affairs / issues that I need to be aware of? Here are the deets:

Background:

We’re a muslim family of six from SEA and will be arriving in US separately (It will be our first time in the states!). My parents are 50+ while myself, my wife and siblings are in our 20s. It’ll be the first time for most of us reaching the America continent.
What we enjoy doing is 60% sightseeing and family activities (especially nature) & 40% relaxing & typical tourist shopping etc.

Day 14 - Day 16: Explore LA (Hollywood, Warner Bros. Studio, may check out one of the baseball games as we’ve never seen one) and our flight departing LA is on Day 16 at night.
Day 17: Arrive in Buffalo early in the morning, check-in and then explore Niagara Falls.
Day 18: Pic up another rental car and drive towards Boston. Stop by Albany halfway overnight.
Day 19: Depart from Albany and drive to Boston. Explore Boston.
Day 20: Relax and explore Boston
Day 21: Depart from Boston and drive to Hoboken, NY (our accommodation) (maybe stop by Woodbury Premium Outlet for a quick shop)
Day 22 - Day 25: Explore New York (Manhattan Island mostly)
Day 26: Last day to explore NY as our flight is at night.
We realise and understand it’s going to be a tough journey, checking-in and out accommodations and long-hour drives. We’re quite used to it and still were able to enjoy our trip (last time we did Dubai, Paris, London & Swiss in 2 ½ weeks). We probably won’t know if we would return to the US again in the future so we thought might go all out and explore both coasts (although there’s a lot more of the States left to explore).

Additional Info:

So yeah, I hope this is enough information for you kind souls out there to give a little feedback on what you think of it. It has been almost a year of planning and finally becoming a reality in a few weeks! Thanks so much for your time!

2024.05.16 12:40 irfanrendrawan Opinion Needed For USA Family Trip In June!

My youngest sister is 17 and she’s a person with down syndrome. We have travelled a lot in the past but this will be the first time we will experience something brand new! It’ll be the first time for most of us reaching the America continent.
What we enjoy doing is 60% sightseeing and family activities (especially nature) & 40% relaxing & typical tourist shopping etc.

Itinerary:

We’ll be travelling early June 2024 (summer / peak hot, yes I know) and will conclude our journey early July. This is the plan so far:
Day 0: Arrive in San Francisco (arriving at night)
Day 1 - 2: Explore San Francisco (Golden Gate, Alcatraz, Point Reyes etc.)
Day 3: Pick up our rental car and drive to Lake Tahoe
Day 4 - 5: Explore Lake Tahoe (Water Sports, Trailing, Hiking)
Day 6: Depart from Lake Tahoe and drive to Yosemite NP
Day 7 - 10: Explore the whole of Yosemite NP
Day 11: Depart from Yosemite NP and drive to Monterey
Day 12: Explore Monterey area (Carlmel-by-the-sea, Big Sur drive)
Day 13: Depart from Monterey and arrive in Los Angeles

BIOGRAPHY

Eldred was the firstborn son of Lord Gorold Farman, a stern ruler who was deeply distrustful of the ironborn. When Aegon the Conqueror invaded the Iron Islands, he took his son with him to sail with the Lannisport fleet and exact revenge on the islanders for the centuries of torment they had caused the people of Fair Isle. The invasion didn't turn out as bloody as Lord Gorold had desired. Eldred took the Conqueror's pacification to mean that House Farman could put aside their old grudges and profit from trading with the ironborn. Renewed trade with the islanders became a project of his, one that he committed to complete when he succeeded his father.
When the Iron Islands submitted to Aegon's rule, Lord Gorold asked the king for hostages to be taken to ensure the lords' loyalties. His wish was granted, and among the ironborn scions brought back to Fair Isle was Hagen Tawney, a young nobleman who Eldred made friends with. From him, Eldred learned much about life on the Iron Islands, eager to know their ways as he was. Hagen taught him how they rowed their longships so efficiently, which stars they used for navigation, and what kinds of places they preferred to raid or trade with. All of this became useful later in Eldred's quest for new shipping lanes. Around the same time, his father arranged his marriage to the daughter of a wealthy lord, with whom he had two boys and a girl; Lorent, Joffrey and Elinor. Eldred was never close with his wife, and instead he preferred the company of his court favorite, Hagen, who became a permanent resident at Faircastle.
Lord Gorold didn't approve of his son and the islander's friendship. Many of his courtiers shared his views, but Eldred would not allow Hagen to be sent away. Ten years later, Lord Gorold died on a winter's night, and his lands and titles passed to his son. The controversy surrounding Hagen Tawney became more prevalent due to the influence he had on the new ruler. At last, Eldred relented, and promised to send Hagen away. He tarried, however, and was hesitant to evict the man by force. This continued for three years, until Hagen was murdered by an unknown assailant. Several courtiers and their accomplices were accused and summarily executed by their furious lord, whose spirits sank once his rage had settled.
Eldred found solace in the company of Pearse Clifton, a household knight and ship captain in House Farman's service. Ser Pearse had been Eldred's ally for a long time, though he was among those who had disapproved of his relationship with Hagen Tawney. He had sailed the Summer Sea and told his lord of the riches to be had in Arbor wine and Lyseni silk. Since the ironborn had recently rebelled, making trade with the islands difficult, Pearse's stories inspired Eldred to pursue new shipping ventures in the south.

2024.05.16 12:05 90s_TV_Commercials M/31 - Up too early and wouldn’t mind someone to chat with

Just having a lazy early morning and wouldn’t mind some people to chat with.
My discord has been kinda slow lately and needs to be cleaned out and filled with some new peeps to talk to.
I don’t have many requirements except that you’re talkative. I don’t like dry conversations any more than Anakin Skywalker likes sand.
Me: Plays golf horribly, enjoys spicy food, long walks on the beach, video games and has a slight problem buying books when I already have stuff to read.
Massively dislikes spiders and aggressive hornets but otherwise likes animals, especially frogs and my cat who is a Royal pain in my ass.
I like fantasy of varying sorts, spooky stuff and cold weather, sweet tea, thinking about what I’d do if I won the lottery, and wishing I didn’t have a fear of flying. Hates radishes but likes water chestnuts even though they’re basically the same thing.
I like lame jokes and geeking out about nonsense. Let’s talk about our hopes and dreams for the future.
just looking for people who match my vibe. If you think that’s you then shoot me a message with a little about yourself!

2024.05.16 12:04 AutoModerator OPINION A CODE OF CONDUCT WON’T SOLVE THE SOUTH CHINA SEA CRISIS

By Rahman Yaacob - May 16, 2024
Negotiations over a “code of conduct” (COC) in the South China Sea between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China waxed and waned for two decades.
Last July, in a bid to expedite an agreement, a three-year deadline was agreed to conclude the talks.
Nothing comes easy in this multifaceted dispute. Even the title of the agreement to hurry along the talks – Guidelines for Accelerating the Early Conclusion of an Effective and Substantive COC – arguably reflects the urgency but also the complexity.
China, Taiwan, and four ASEAN member states – Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam – each have overlapping maritime claims to the South China Sea. The negotiations for the code, however, involved all ten ASEAN members with its consensus model and China.
Two major points will likely derail the objective of accelerating negotiations for a code to manage the South China Sea disputes peacefully.

“One ASEAN negotiator explained that some ASEAN negotiators turn up ill-prepared, often needing to consult their capitals for instructions on almost every discussion point.”

The first issue is the state of the talks themselves, where trust between the parties is plainly lacking. ASEAN negotiators privately explain that even agreeing on the geographical area the code should cover – termed the Zone of Applicability – has proven difficult because of the different parts claimed in the South China Sea, whereas officials on the Chinese side believe some ASEAN states are asking for the sky – i.e., demanding China to give up its sovereignty in the South China Sea. Only then, ASEAN negotiators see China changing the goalposts during the negotiations.
But not all blame is sheeted to China. Some ASEAN members are seen as laggards in the negotiations, not fully committed to the process, not believing they have much at stake in the disputes.
One ASEAN negotiator explained that some ASEAN negotiators turn up ill-prepared, often needing to consult their capitals for instructions on almost every discussion point, hampering progress, despite meetings being held five and six times annually. Wry humour has taken hold, with jokes about another agreement between ASEAN and China within the next few years to “Accelerate Further the Already Accelerating Process for the Early Conclusion of an Effective and Substantive COC”.
The second issue concerns the quality of the outcome. There are doubts whether China will be willing to sign a legally binding agreement, given that it has already dismissed the outcome of the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s ruling in 2016 against its claims in the South China Sea.
Should that hurdle be overcome, there are concerns about implementation of the code. Will there be an effective mechanism to monitor and enforce any violation?
If not, what does the code amount to? And also, given that ASEAN operates with a consensus decision-making process, will the deadline push ASEAN members to water down the substance of the agreement?

“Setting a deadline for negotiations on a code of conduct doesn’t necessarily hasten an agreement.”

Talks on the code of conduct, it must be acknowledged, are only part of the broader ASEAN engagement with China on the South China Sea. ASEAN’s efforts with China stretch back years, to 1990 when Indonesia held the first workshop on the South China Sea involving the different claimants. In the decades since, there have been efforts to engage in joint cooperation on extracting resources and protecting the environment in the disputed waters.
Yet, 34 years on, militarisation has been the dominant theme. China’s artificial islands bristle with military facilities and long runways. Beijing has adopted a more aggressive approach to asserting its claims, lasing, using water cannons, and ramming against other claimants’ boats. Vietnam has expanded its presence and deployed missiles. The Philippines is seeking to fortify its position.
So setting a deadline for negotiations on a code of conduct doesn’t necessarily hasten an agreement. Meantime, ASEAN claimants should continue to build up their capabilities and work with other external powers, such as Australia and Japan, to defend their maritime interests. Sometimes, the potential ability to inflict military pain on the other party may be just the instrument for diplomacy to work well.
This story originally appeared on The Interpreter, published by the Lowy Institute for International Policy.

Pascha; a Reminiscence from the GULAG
Should at any time we feel ourselves to be alone, or for the secular world to be so overwhelming and powerful as to render spiritual life redundant, we can reflect on the difficulties of our predecessors and be inspired by their cheerfulness and joy in the face of tremendous privations.
As mentioned before, the mid 1920’s was a period of ferocious attacks upon the Church by the Bolsheviks, both clergy and laity. Many of the faithful were executed or imprisoned in the Gulag for extended periods on nonsensical charges. The Solovetsky Island concentration camp (Solovki for short), formerly a remote monastery on an island in the White Sea region of Russia’s far north, was reserved for particularly “recalcitrant” prisoners, in particular priests from throughout the Soviet Union, including the newly annexed Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic. Conditions were brutal and fatalities commonplace.

This letter from Bishop Maxim of Serpukhov, a Russian priest, is a moving testament to the resilience and cheerfulness of interned clergy during tremendous oppression. The Paschal context of his letter is poignant for us this week.
At Solovki we had several secret Catacomb “churches,” but our “favorites” were two: the “Cathedral Church” of the Holy Trinity, and the church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The first was a small clearing in the midst of a dense forest in the direction of the “Savvaty” Assignment Area. The dome of this church was the sky, The wails were the birch forest. The church of St. Nicholas was located in the deep forest towards the “Muksolm” Assignment Area, It was a thicket naturally formed by seven large spruces. Most frequently the secret services were conducted only in the summer, on great feasts and, with special solemnity, on the Day of Pentecost. But sometimes, depending on circumstances, doubly secret services were celebrated also in other places. Thus, for example, on Great Thursday of 1929, the service of the reading of the Twelve Gospels was celebrated in our physicians’ cell in the 10th Company, Vladika Victor and Fr. Nicholas came to us as if for disinfection. Then, catacomb style, they served the church service with the door bolted. On Great Friday an order was read in all Companies informing that for the next three days no one would be allowed to leave the Companies after 8 p.m. save in exceptional circumstances and by special written permit of the Camp Commandant.
At 7 p.m. on Friday, when we physicians had just returned to our cells after a 12-hour workday, Fr. Nicholas came to us and told us that a Plashchanitsa (burial shroud with the image of Christ) the size of one’s palm had been painted by the artist R. The service-the rite of burial–was to be held and would begin in an hour. “Where?” Vladika Maxim asked. “In the great box for drying fish which is closest to the forest, next to Camp N. The password: three knocks and then two. It’s better to come one at a time.”
In half an hour Vladika Maxim and I left our Company and started out for the indicated “address.” Twice patrols asked for our permits. We, as physicians, had them. But what about the others?–Vladika Victor, Vladika Ilarion, Vladika Nektary, and Fr. Nicholas? Vladika Victor worked as-a bookkeeper in the rope factory. Vladika Nektary was a fisherman; and the others weaved nets. Here was the edge of the forest. Here was the box, about nine yards long, without windows, the door scarcely noticeable. Light twilight, the sky covered with dark clouds. We knock three times and then twice. Fr. Nicholas opens. Vladika Victor and Vladika Ilarion are already here… In a few minutes Vladika Nektary also comes. The interior of the box has been converted into a church. On the floor, on the wails, spruce branches. Several candles flickering. Small paper icons. The small Plashanitsa is buried in green branches. Ten people have come to pray. Later another four or five come, of whom two are monks. The service begins, in a whisper. It seemed that we had no bodies, but were only souls. Nothing distracted or interfered with prayer… I don’t remember how we went “home,” i.e., to our Companies. The Lord covered us!
The bright service of Pascha was assigned to our physicians’ cell. Towards midnight under various urgent pretexts arranged by the section, without any kind of written permit, all who intended to come gathered, about fifteen people in all. After the Matins and Liturgy, we sat down and broke the fast. On the table were Paschal cake and cheese, colored eggs, cold dishes, wine (liquid yeast with cranberry extract and sugar). About three o’clock we parted.
Control rounds of our Company were made by the Camp Commandant before and after the services, at 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. Finding us four physicians headed by Vladika Maxim, on his last round, the Commandant said: “What doctors, you’re not sleeping?” And immediately he added: “Such a night…and one doesn’t want to sleep!” And he left.
“Lord Jesus Christ! We thank Thee for the miracle of Thy mercy and power,” pronounced Vladika Maxim movingly, expressing our common feelings.
The white night of Solovki was nearing its end. The delicate, rose-colored Paschal morning of Solovki, the sun playing for joy, greeted the monastery-concentration camp, converting it into the invisible city of Kitezh and filling our free Souls with a quiet, unearthly joy.

2024.05.16 11:34 Ok-Asparagus-7787 Someone saved my life and I cant tell them

I have a decade+ relationship with depression that I am deciding to end. The title of this post might seem excessive or dramatic, but there is a big difference in saving a life and preventing a death. I recently contacted someone on this platform in an attempt to extend a helping hand. That message would end up being a catalyst for me once I began exchanging friendly banter and learning about the other person's life. The first time we spoke on the phone it was for hours. I got off that phone call, and felt a surge of emotions that felt foreign to me. They were happiness, anticipation, excitement. Unable to control myself, I even texted the other person that it was the first time in memory that I was going to be falling asleep with a smile on my face.
Not everyone falls into despair in similar fashions. I would read through reddit post or hear stories about people with suicidal ideologies, and decide that obviously I wasn't in a bad spot because I didn't share in that struggle. I have been empathetic to those in need, and I confidently think that all of my friends would swear by my loyalty and comforting presence. No, my decent was overshadowed with snarky humor, the bottom of a bottle, and eating away my feelings. Feelings that I wasn't acknowledging which inhibited my ability to attack them. I have been numb to pain and joy for so long that I am not sure when I stopped living a life and became an avatar masquerading as the original me. Momentum was gone, and seemed so far away that I wasn't even reaching for it. I was a shell going through the motions of adult life like a robot, and not like a human.
Upon waking up from that smiling trip into dreamland I had an epiphany that something had to change. I felt a youthful resurgence building in myself that I wanted to hold onto more than anything I have wanted in years. So, I filed for a vacation from work. I signed up for therapy sessions that are way past due, and I sat down with my wonderful mother and best friend to come clean about the status of my mental health. I pity people who don't have support from loved ones, because I can't put into words how relieved I was to find zero judgement and only offers of support.
Why can't I tell them that they saved my life? That is simple. I wouldn't want to burden this beautiful soul with feeling any responsibility for me. If they disappeared right now, and ghosted me to focus on themselves it would still leave me with nothing but gratitude. They didn't convince or coax me into a change. They were kind, and made me remember that life doesn't have to be empty by being genuine. I currently feel alive, and have taken steps to include other's in preserving my newly found momentum. I could never ask, demand, or guilt someone into giving me anything more than my life back.
If you are reading this and any part resonated. Please don't wait for the deus ex machina I experienced to seek help. I wasted so much time, and I hope you don't waste your own.
Sorry for any grammar mistakes. English is my first language, but I'm not perfect.

2024.05.16 11:18 pinksparklyclouds Good priced hotel in seoul for 3 nights

We are going to South Korea in August and we would like to stay three days in Seoul. Previously, we would have had stayed in Incheon and Jeju Island. Is there any known not-expensive hotel that we can stay at that is clean and safe at the same time ? Also, where would you recommend us to go to restaurants, or to do tourism in general? We would like to try a bit of everything in Korean culture starting with restaurants and places to visit. I would like a travel plan recommendation. Also, how long before the trip should we book the hotel? It will be around 21 august.

2024.05.16 11:05 anthropomorphycalien Asalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu, humans. ❤️✌️

Hi there!
I have been casually lurking this sub-reddit since before I reverted to Islam last year in September, as well as a number of other Islam-themed sub-reddits.
In this sub specifically, as well as a few others, I have appreciated the entertaining and informative discourse established by the seemingly open-minded and critical denizens.
JazakAllah khair, fam.
I figured I would introduce myself, as I'm at a point in my study of the Quran and Islam where I believe open discussion of my thoughts and knowledge, (or perhaps lackthereof? 🧐 The more you know, the less you know.), would be beneficial rather than overly influential.
Anywho. My name is Marisa, or نهى 🤷‍♀️. I'm 30 years old. I live in the Bay Area of California and have since I was 18. I moved out here alone, without connections, and built a decent little life for myself. I'm still studying (Civil Eng.) but currently work for a CE drafting and doing occasional field work. I skateboard, bike, read, write, make art, etcetcetc. The two truths I have found in this life are Islam and to seek knowledge insatiably.
Around the end of 2022/beginning of 2023, I found myself with a lot of friends either born in or whose family is from the MENA region. Various places: Tunisia, Palestine, Iraq, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Syria, Lebanon, etc. Most are Muslim, الحمد لله 🥰. Given that it's in my nature to seek knowledge, I sought to reconcile the fact that I knew nothing about Islam.
My religious background: I was raised "loosely" Christian. My parents believed in God but didn't really talk about God or go to church. My mom would talk a tiny bit about God with me and I remember saying this prayer before bed well into my teens with her:
"Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I shall die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take."
Beside that, throughout my childhood also into my early teens, I would go to church with friends. I think a Catholic church once, but mostly Baptist and Protestant IIRC. I even joined youth group a couple of times.
The thing is though, that Christianity never really spoke to me, even though I believed in God. I just couldn't connect with it for no other reason I can think of, than that God was preserving my faith for Islam.
Around the age of 15, I remember telling my father I thought I was an atheist. He acted upset and told me "We believe in God," but didn't have much to say when I said "Since when? You never talk about God."
Fast forward to 18 or 19, and I started calling myself agnostic. My reasoning for this change was the acceptance of the reality of metaphysical phenomena. I was tired of deluding myself to the existence of something outside our understanding, though not ready to accept that I believed in our monotheistic God, the only Lord, Allah subhana wa ta’ala. (Fun fact: When things were terrible and when things were fantastic, I prayed to Allah, even when I called myself an atheist.)
And I stayed that way until I began reading the Quran, hadith, opinion pieces from casual studies, articles and discussions from scholars, from sources across the board. Sunni, Shia, Quranists, ex-Muslims, etc etc.
And I found myself drawn to Islam. For one, it made me finally admit to myself that I believed in God.
Further, the message I was receiving from the Quran was one of ethics, love(in all its forms, fierce and tender), knowledge-seeking, reciprocity, and patience, and so much more as my studies will not cease until I die ان شاء الله .
The tipping point from being drawn by to diving into Islam was what I can only explain as guidance directly from Allah SWT.
I was up late reading Surah an-Nisa. I had finished reading the following ayah, which I had resonated with and was feeling deeply at that moment.
After reading those, I was thinking over them and ready to sleep, I went to put my Quran down. As I did, it flipped open to the page with the Shahada on it. Seeing it, I had a very strong, sudden, and urgent feeling that I needed to take my Shahada. I want to say my intuition was pushing me, but it was different, outside of myself, and far stronger. So I did. I took my Shahada and fell asleep knowing I had done the right thing. Later, I said my Shahada with Muslim witnesses, of course, though not at a masjid.
Since then, I have been content with my choice and endlessly grateful to Allah SWT for His guidance الحمد لله ❤️
For further clarity on my particular stance within Islam, I identify purely as a Muslim and do not associate myself with any sects or school of thought. I take information from everywhere, and my research always goes back to the Quran. I am not a native Arabic speaker, although I'm slowly learning ان شاء الله (And am actually starting lessons soon, الحمد لله), so I often use friends (from all over and who identify within different Islamic schools of thought) as translators when I deep dive verses, hadith, etc, as well as multiple Arabic-English dictionaries, a Quranic Root index, and varying sources of interpretation.
I have not formed any particular blanket opinion about any sect or school of thought at this point, though find some sect-associated acts to be contrary to what we're taught in the Quran.
I am highly skeptical of Hadiths (including the science behind the chains of transmission), though I do not dismiss them entirely. Some are bound to be accurate at best, and indicative of socio-political conditions/individual and group character at worst.
I am deeply curious, though currently ill-informed, about the long-term effect that the first 4 caliphs, as well as the Ummayid and Abbasid caliphates had on the Ummah and our collective understanding of Islamic history, and subsequently our understanding of Islam.
Not sure what else to put on here besides what I already have.
Oh, I have two cats. Ada and Marie. They're named after scientists. If you can guess who they're named after, I'll think you're really cool, مل شاء الله 👌
Also #freepalestine
The ayah from an-Nisa, with Yusef Ali translation:
Serve Allah, and join not any partners with Him; and do good- to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need, neighbours who are near, neighbours who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (ye meet), and what your right hands possess: For Allah loveth not the arrogant, the vainglorious;-
Surah An-Nisāʾ: 37]
(Nor) those who are niggardly or enjoin niggardliness on others, or hide the bounties which Allah hath bestowed on them; for We have prepared, for those who resist Faith, a punishment that steeps them in contempt;-
Surah An-Nisāʾ: 38]
Not those who spend of their substance, to be seen of men, but have no faith in Allah and the Last Day: If any take the Evil One for their intimate, what a dreadful intimate he is!
Surah An-Nisāʾ: 39]
And what burden Were it on them if they had faith in Allah and in the Last Day, and they spent out of what Allah hath given them for sustenance? For Allah hath full knowledge of them.
Surah An-Nisāʾ: 40]
Allah is never unjust in the least degree: If there is any good (done), He doubleth it, and giveth from His own presence a great reward.
Surah An-Nisāʾ: 41]
How then if We brought from each people a witness, and We brought thee as a witness against these people!
Surah An-Nisāʾ: 42]
On that day those who reject Faith and disobey the messenger will wish that the earth Were made one with them: But never will they hide a single fact from Allah!

2024.05.16 10:47 jasin18 Tutorial: How to manually add airport to PMDG NavData FMC (PC STEAM)

This took me around 2 hours to figure out, so I thought I'd share this with you. After creating a flightplan with SimBrief, and then trying to load it up through the FMC, it kept saying "Invalid .rte file". Turns out that even though Simbrief has the airport, the plane did not, and would not load the flight plan. This is how you manually add it. If flightsim is already loaded, you must restart the program. This confirms work with PMDG on MSFS2020 for Steam PC. (PMDG was purchased directly)
Open up the work folder in Appdata/Roaming/Microsoft Flight SimulatoPackages/pmdg-aircraft-xxx/work/NavData/ARPT_RWY
First figure out the LAT and LONG of the airport, I recommend going into the FMCWP folder which is within the NavData folder and opening up airports "work/NavData/FMCWP/NavaData/airports" and look for the airport that Simbrief does confirm have information on, and copy that Lat and Long.
If this is a fictional airport, I recommend just using google maps, find the spot, right click, and copy the Lat and Long by left clicking on it.
When you open up the ARPT_RWY folder, it will have a format like this.
AP;PCIS;CANTON ISLAND ;-2.770000;-171.713333;3
RW;09;-2.766449;-171.718512;0;0;92;92;6481
RW;27;-2.770681;-171.698206;3;0;272;272;6481
You must place the airport at the proper location by highest negative number, to highest positive number with Latitude sorting
Here are what the numbers mean.
Airport; ICAO; Name ;Lat ; Lon ; Elevation
Runway; Number; Lat at touchdown; Long at touchdown; elevation;ILS I think; Magnetic heading; Magnetic Heading I think again; Runway length
If you don't know the ILS just leave it at 0, and just repeat the magnetic heading again before the runway length, I'm not 100% on the 2nd to last number, but repeating the mag heading works just fine.
If anyone knows exactly what it is please share, and if anyone knows how to do this with Fenix A320, I would also love to know.

2024.05.16 10:44 querulous_hierarchy How legal is that?

Is it okay for the person running a pool to take a percentage of the betting money? I've been part of many online betting pools for big sports events like March Madness and the Masters Golf tournament. Some of these pools have been running for years and have grown a lot.
I've noticed that sometimes the payouts don't match the total money in the pool. Normally, I'd expect that if you win, you get a share of all the money everyone put in.
But if the person running the pool is taking a cut for themselves, is that against the law? Or is it okay if the state allows gambling, as long as they pay taxes on it?
I think everyone in the pool should know if the organizer is taking a percentage. It shouldn't be left up to interpretation.

2024.05.16 10:31 omegaMKXIII 31 [M4F] Austria/Europe - Looking for my forever lady

I am looking for a lady between 25 and 35 years old, for a committed monogamous childfree relationship. My goal is to become a true team, supporting each other, caring for each other, nurturing each other and helping each other grow and realise our goals and dreams as much as possible. I'm hoping to find someone that values a relationship as much as I do and takes it seriously. It's not the only thing my life revolves around, but it's also not just something 'nice to have' for me.
I am 186cm tall, slim/fit built, dark brown hair, brown eyes. Both my arms are tattooed (full sleeve), as are my calves and the areas above my ankles. Regarding pictures see below. I am a runner, training multiple times a week. I'm also vegan. My love languages are physical touch and words of affirmation. While I am mostly securely attached, withdrawing from me triggers anxiety and I have made a horrible experience with an avoidant partner in the past, so that is something I fear I cannot deal with again.
I am also an atheist.
I am a very warm, soft and sensitive person, I think I am humorous, I am self reflecting a lot and I can also be really passionate and romantic. Those are traits that also are really important to me in a woman.
I can be quite social, I am a good talker, but also love to listen to really get to know someone on a deeper level. I can enjoy an evening out with friends just as much as the silence of sitting at the shores of the river and watching the sunset in solitude (although I've been craving to watch it together with a partner for a really long time now). I can be out in a pub, at a rave, a metal show or at a football game and have the time of my life, but I cannot do these things every day; I need recharge time (on the sofa, in the woods for a run, a lazy Sunday staying in bed etc.). This should give you an idea; basically, I am a homebody that thoroughly enjoys going out in moderation.
I won't say too much about hobbies; suffice it to say I am into the dark, the obscure, the macabre, the occult, the mysterious, the erotic. It won't surprise you that I had a gothic phase in my youth, bonus points if you did too!
What I'm looking for
Although similar hobbies and interests are a plus, emotional and intimate compatibility are more important to me. I am a very sensitive and emotional person (I do cry easily and by this point I don't think I'll ever be able to change that, sorry), so if you're too, we will definitely understand each other. I need someone who I can open up to (which I do rather quickly, anyway), be myself, bare my soul to and I need these things from you, too. I've had my share of emotionally unavailable women who were afraid of intimacy so I know I can't deal with that again because of the way how those things affect me. I am always emotionally invested with the woman I pursue and in those cases that was to my detriment. But my ability to feel so deep is also something I wouldn't want to change because as of yet, although it's getting harder, I haven't given up on finding someone.
With those emotional needs come two requirements that I found to be vital over the years: First, being able to be silly and cutesy together and to accept each other's inner child and care for it. I am not talking about having to deal with another person's immaturity or inability to perform basic adult skills, rather with the way sadness, hurt, anxiety and being overwhelmed manifests for me (and maybe for you, too?). I need someone who is able to comfort me, to hold me, to allow me to be weak and needy for a while until I've calmed down, and I'm more than ready to offer the same. Your inner child can come out for a while, no problem (: Also in a positive way: Thankfully, today everyone seems to be understanding of the cuteness overload cats (or any animal baby, really) can cause; I need that with a partner. I also still have plushies as comfort animals and ideally, you do too.
Apparently in every relationship, one person is the stronger one. In the past, I have been with women who obviously were stronger than me, but that doesn't mean they always had to be strong, far from it. I certainly need to be able to feel protected, but it's not like I'm a particularly needy partner, like everyone, I have my ups and downs, but I can pull my weight and have been told by past partners that I am very caring and that they felt safe and understood with me, and providing that for my partner is really important for me as well.
Second, intimate compatibility. I am rather insatiable and love to experiment when it comes to the bedroom, so you should, too, in order that we can explore and enjoy together. I found out how fulfilling living out those fantasies can be after years of never being able to try and in a relationship, this kind of fulfillment for both partners is a must for me. I found the term 'filthy best friends and partners' to be a perfect description.
I'm looking for a balance between healthy independence and being emotionally present. A relationship where we 'get' each other; we're both each other's number one and treat each other like royalty. Where a disagreement leads to more intimacy between us as we understand better, not to resentment. Where we're comfortable baring our souls to each other, becoming a safe haven and secure base for each other. I don't like the modern notion that you 'should never feel too safe in a relationship' because that sounds like running from the mafia (and believe me, I love mafia movies); you should always put in effort, yes, but safety is one of the things I always want to experience and provide in a relationship. We shouldn't fear that a disagreement leads straight to breakup. I know ‘self-sufficiency’ is trending right now, but I feel like as partners, we’re partly responsible for each other and not our own but also each other’s happiness. Being dependant and dependable at the same time is important; making each other’s wellbeing a priority. If you’re not able to healthily depend on someone and their support while you’re having a hard time, look elsewhere. If I have to be afraid you’ll run at the first major problem that surfaces, even if it’s a ‘you’-problem, it’s not going to work. I think that all things can and need to be talked about. If you think ignoring someone for days is a form of communication, please look elsewhere.
I am looking for someone real. We all have our problems, I don't want or need a 'perfect' person. You don't have everything figured out or 'all your shit' together. Be imperfect. Admit when you feel sad and angry, lonely, hopeless or even helpless – it's all relatable. Don't hide it. Be quirky, be dorky, be witchy, opinionated, be yourself. Don't pretend.
I'm looking for someone to share romance with. Not great gestures, but small, meaningful ones. Poems for each other, expressing our feelings; cards with heartfelt messages that we put our perfume/cologne on, and a symbol that means something to us only, the print of your lips with lipstick, the way I sign and seal my letters for you.
Just as important to me is agreeing on living a healthy life, staying in shape both for ourselves and for each other, regularly working out and eating healthy. I am drug and disease-free and expect the same of you. I do drink as I love a good beer or glass of wine, rum or whiskey, but I've never really been drinking much and especially during the past year have further reduced it. One vice I have is that I enjoy a couple of cigars a year, but I can definitely accommodate you in this regard.
Another important point is aligned life goals: I value safety more than adventure. I want to build a home together with my partner, a safespace for the both of us, where we always feel loved and protected, a place that we create together, make it cozy together so we just love to get back home there wherever we might have been, a home we decorate together for Halloween (my favourite holiday) or Christmas or Springtime, as we live in tune with the seasons, enjoying nature on a walk or the rain outside, reading in our cozy home. I value stability and harmony.
Appearance-wise, I am into ladies on the smaller side), so I'm looking for someone petite/slim/skinny/healthy-fit. Likewise, I am not really muscular and don't have visible abs; like I said, I'm a runner, so if you're more into the gym-type, I'm not a good fit.
I’d prefer to move from text to voice calls, videochat and then meeting up, all of that rather sooner than later. Not that there’s a need to rush anything, but I’d rather see earlier if we’re compatible or not; as someone who catches feelings fast I need to protect myself.
Caveats
If you're interested, feel free to message me and include some pictures of yourself and I will reply with my own. Have a nice day (:

2024.05.16 10:27 omegaMKXIII 31 [M4F] Austria/Europe - Looking for my forever lady

General
I am looking for a lady between 28 and 35 years old, for a committed monogamous childfree relationship.
I tried to be as concise as possible while still providing what details I think are crucial to know; I realise this post turned out very long, but I prefer those because I can get as good an idea as possible with detailed descriptions, bar actually talking to the person, and find that very valuable, so if that also applies to you, that would be awesome.
Basics
I am 186cm tall, slim/fit built, dark brown hair, brown eyes. Both my arms are tattooed (full sleeve), as are my calves and the areas above my ankles. Regarding pictures see below. I am a runner (ranging from 5k to full marathon), training multiple times a week. I'm also vegan. My love languages are physical touch and words of affirmation. While I am mostly securely attached, withdrawing from me triggers anxiety and I have made a horrible experience with a fearful avoidant partner in the past, so that is something I fear I cannot deal with again.
I am also an atheist.

What I am looking for
Although similar hobbies and interests are a plus (and there have to be at least a couple things we have in common), emotional and sexual compatibility are more important to me. I am a very sensitive and emotional person (I do cry easily and by this point I don't think I'll ever be able to change that, sorry), so if you're too, we will definitely understand each other. I also still have plushies as comfort animals (some of which in quite a litteral sense as they make for really amazing pillows) and ideally, you do too.
There is a saying that in every relationship, one person is the stronger one. In the past, I have been with women who obviously were stronger than me, but that doesn't mean they always had to be strong, far from it. I certainly, like I said, need to be able to feel protected, but it's not like I'm a particularly needy partner, like everyone, I have my ups and downs, but I can pull my weight and have been told by past partners that I am very caring and that they felt safe and understood with me, and providing that for my partner is really important for me as well – this just to put the picture I'm (somewhat haphazardly) trying to paint into perspective.
Second, sexual compatibility. I have a high libido and I have kinks, so you should, too, in order that we can explore and enjoy them together. I found out how fulfilling living out those fantasies can be after years of never being able to try and in a relationship, sexual fulfillment for both partners is a must for me. Someone on here has coined the term 'filthy best friends and partners' which I have no shame to be stealing because it's such an apt description.
I'm looking for a balance between healthy independence and being emotionally present. A relationship where we 'get' each other; we're both each other's number one and treat each other like royalty. Where a disagreement leads to more intimacy between us as we understand better, not to resentment. Being dependant and dependable at the same time is important; making each other’s wellbeing a priority. I love the relationship model outlined in Stan Tatkin’s ‘Wired for Love’ and you should, too. If you’re not able to healthily depend on someone and their support while you’re having a hard time, look elsewhere. I know codependency is the latest thing everyone’s afraid of, but experiencing someone you’ve grown very attached to just bailing because they’re counterdependent and can’t stand working on themselves while simultaneously letting you in is something I’d rather not go through again. If I have to be afraid you’ll run at the first major problem that surfaces, even if it’s a ‘you’-problem, it’s not going to work. I think that all things can and need to be talked about. If you think ignoring someone for days is a form of communication, please look elsewhere. If you think’s it’s okay to lovebomb someone and then leave after a couple of months with the minimum amount of information and no proper conversation because you’re not ready to own up to what’s happening to you emotionally, please look elsewhere.
I am looking for someone real. We all have our problems, I don't want or need a 'perfect' person. You don't have everything figured out or 'all your shit' together. Be imperfect. One vice I have is that I enjoy a couple of cigars a year, but I can definitely accommodate you in this regard.
Another important point is aligned life goals: many childfree people seem to be adventurous, but that is a trait I don't associate with myself at all. I value safety more than adventure. I want to build a home together with my partner, a safespace for the both of us, where we always feel loved and protected, a place that we create together, make it cozy together so we just love to get back home there wherever we might have been, a home we decorate together for Halloween (my favourite holiday) or Christmas or Springtime, as we live in tune with the seasons, seeing them change around us, enjoying nature on a walk or the rain outside, reading in our cozy home. The natural progression for me would be to move from text to voice calls, videochat and then meeting up, all of that rather sooner than later. Not that there’s a need to rush anything, but having my heart broken because I already developed feelings due to a longer timeframe and then everything unexpectedly turning to shit is not something I want to have to live through again. I’d rather see earlier if we’re compatible or not; as someone who catches feelings fast I need to protect myself, I unfortunately had to learn that
Caveats/Possible red flags
