multiple content warnings, i’m sorry, this will be long, this isn’t even everything and it’s a damn book i am 19. i was 11 when i had to grow up. my parents decided to divorce after months of fighting, letting us know a week before my 12th birthday. you know, the classic divorce story. my dad moved out and my mom started dating people. it moved so fast. we moved to a different area, even though we had just moved into a new house a year earlier, leaving my childhood hometown behind. my mom was trying to pursue school so we were living on student aid and stamps. (i have 3 siblings, so there were 5 of us) i started middle school in that area and was doing pretty well off. then my mom got pretty serious with someone i’m going to call SOB, he doesn’t deserve a name. my mom and SOB were dating for two months before that thing proposed to my mom. we met him once before he was labeled our step dad. my mom sat us down and told us we’d be moving to idaho to be closer to her family. come to find out, the whole reason for going there was because SOB is an ex convict and he couldn’t leave idaho because that’s were his parole was.
we were told at the time that he was framed for kidnapping and he had a whole story crafted to back it up. being a kid and needing my mom, i didn’t ask or dig about it. so we moved to idaho. i started school there and immediately got death threats. i got called a hoe relentlessly for seemingly being pretty. eventually things calmed down and i had friends, but that place was tiny and once people have formed an opinion of you, there’s no changing it, so it was hard to get around.
SOB was awful to my younger brother. we’ll call this brother zayn. zayn has bad adhd and has always struggled with school. he’s one of the smartest people i know, but getting assignments in is not his forte. so as a result he’s never had the highest grades. SOB hated the fact that my brother wasn’t doing great and would literally stand there and scream at him to get his work done. there was one time that i was in my room and i started to hear my brother screaming so immediately i’m upstairs to help him, SOB was literally chasing my brother around our house with a damn bat screaming at him like a demon was coming out. i yelled at him to leave my brother alone and things just got darker after that. me and my brother were scum to him and he ran our house like the hunger games. my other little brother and my older sister were prized jewels, they got everything they wanted and more, and SOB would rub it in our faces. he even gave my dog away, i went days worrying about her and looking because i thought she had ran away, to find out that some other person had my dog now and i wouldn’t ever get her back.
fasting forward a little, SOB violated his parole by going on a trip that wasn’t fully approved and got put back in jail right before christmas. my mom completely threw herself into trying to get him out. me and my sister noticed that my mom hadn’t gotten a single thing to be santa for my brothers, so we scraped up the money we had to get gifts so my brothers wouldn’t lose their christmas spirit seeing that santa didn’t come when things were already so bad as it was. i love that i was able to do this for them, the smiles on their faces, i will never forget that christmas.
after a long time of having a very absent mother, she was able to get SOB out of jail. he came back even worse of a monster then when he left. he sexually assaulted my mom, committed all kinds of fraud, basically stole all of my papa’s retirement money, the list goes on. my mom decided she wanted a divorce and when he found out, he went crazy. he locked all of us out of our house and threw our things on the lawn. it rained, i lost so many things, a one of a kind paper mache venitian mask i had gotten on a trip with my dad to italy included.
it’s 2020 by now and we went on a trip to Texas, to meet the person my dad was dating. on the trip, I very much learned that she was not for my dad. but, all reasoning was in vain. my dad proposed, and we had literally just met her. so that was that my dad was engaged now and focused on trying to move them out to him and getting a new house. my mom decided at that time that she wanted to move too so we had a choice, move to my dads and go back to the area i grew up in, or go with my mom to another ranch town in idaho. i chose my dads. my brothers came with, but my sister stayed with my grandparents where we lived in idaho so she could graduate.
things were fine for a bit. my mom was dating a lot and even got engaged. then she told us about this other guy she had been seeing, who had given her a 500 mile ride home from somewhere. immediately suspicious, especially because she wouldn’t drop a name. come to find out other guy was SOB. SOB proposes to her again and she’s got two engagement rings from two different people. everyone was like, what the actual shit are you doing. my mom was in a very cooky state of mind, broke things off with the other guy, and stayed with SOB. there was a weekend in september that my cousin had something going on so my extended family and everything was all there and we decided there needed to be some kind of intervention. to keep things short, it didn’t go well. my mom ended up leaving and she told me and my sister that she didn’t want to be our mom anymore. found out through facebook a couple days later that my mom and SOB were married.
then came the everlasting fun of a custody battle. my step mom had gotten into my dads head saying he needed to take full custody. now i wasn’t the biggest fan of my mom at the time, but that didn’t mean i never wanted to see her. my parents hated each other. there were a few times in exchanges that the cops ended up being called.
for a while my dad had pretty bad anger issues. low blood sugar, overstimulation, bad smells, anything could set him off. i just so happened to have a very large target on my back so i got the brunt of everything. i wouldn’t let him yell at my brothers and this resulted in me getting the lashings, but i would do it all again if that meant protecting my brothers. he wasn’t angry all the time, there were a lot of good days, but it was definitely pretty tortuous for a while. a lot of the problem, which i knew would happen to begin with, was my step mom. she is one of the laziest people i’ve ever known, which is the complete opposite of my dad. my dad likes to do things, he’s always active. so he was frustrated because he would want to do things with his wife there, and she would almost always refuse, so she could have a quiet day in bed. my step mom had also convinced herself that i was stealing from her. she ransacked my room multiple times, to no avail. she took my car keys ‘until she could prove i was taking things from her’ and i only got them back because they were sick of giving me rides places. she actually ended up stealing some of my things trying to claim they were hers, so she hid them and i haven’t seen them since.
so yeah i got yelled at a lot, accused of being a thief, and my relationship with my mom was shit + the joys of high school. i have been doing musical theater my whole life. when i first got to my new high school i was so excited because, although i wasn’t able to audition for the productions companies that year, the teacher told me i was a shoe in for the next year. she ended up leaving and we got a new teacher, if you can even call her that. so it’s my junior year, the first year with her, and it wasn’t bad, i got some good parts and did really well. i ended up getting nominated for an award for one of my performances and it was at this time, i don’t know what happened, but she did not like me anymore. she told me that she accepted the nomination for me, but i found out not too long later that she never accepted it and i was in favor to win so the judges were very puzzled by it. she accepted my friends nominations and kinda rubbed it in my face that i never got anything back. like’ awe are you sad because you didn’t hear anything from the judges? well so and so over here did😈’
the summer after that year i cut my hair pretty short. i wouldn’t say i’m not ‘girly’ but i definitely have a more masculine ‘bro’ persona comparatively. so now it’s my senior year, it matters a lot more at this point to try for good parts because it’s my last run. to keep it simple, my teacher wouldn’t cast me because i was too masculine, not even as a guy ?? idk make it make sense. i got one part my entire senior year, and i know it’s not because i’m bad. but i wrote and produced my own show that ended up being 100x the quality of the shows she produced, so i did get redemption. long story short, it really sucks to watch the peers your just as good as continue to succeed, while you get kicked out of the room for being distracting when you haven’t said a word. the reason they didn’t like me ? i’m good at improv, i kid you not i was told i was too creative and it bothered them. i know my presence scared the teachers there because i’m not a classic conformist theater kid that does anything and everything the teacher says.
anyways, so after years of trying to rekindle a relationship with my mom, fighting with an ass teacher and getting yelled at almost daily, a lot of worth questioning, and a flurry of weed later, i graduated.
both of my brothers in this time attempted to end their lives and were in facilities for a bit. i decided at that time to move in with my mom to hopefully help our relationship. it did a lot. me and my mom are best friends now. but it hasn’t been because of nothing. SOB had become the most controlling narcissistic asshole and my mom was just acting having any feelings for him so he wouldn’t take everything away from her. he monitored everything my mom did. he hit my mom in an intimate moment, and almost beat zayn, but i covered him and ended up slicing my arm open on our fireplace, once again i would do this 100 times over to protect my brother. i decided i wanted to dig everything up on him that i could. what i found was mortifying. i won’t go into too much detail, but there were a lot of charges, multiple of them being SA of a child. i vowed at that moment that i would do anything it takes to get him back behind bars. he’s actively on the offender list and he works across the street from a preschool, not on my fukin watch ass hat.
i will never forget the true terror on my moms face that that man caused. it got to the point where my mom would get really scared if she started crying because she knew he’d freak out at her if he noticed. i came back to my locked room, that i have the only key to, with holes in my walls in weird places, and in my bathroom too. a couple days before, my brother found a camera in his room, so i knew what it was and that SOB was spying on me. i taped them all up and came to stay at my bfs house and have been here since. after months of his treacherous cycle my mom had enough and left to a safe house, she’s there now. the divorce is going though but from some reason the stupid system denied my mom a protective order against him. he has full access to our house and things right now, and he’s trying to make 90,000 so he can baile his way out of the insurance fraud case against him that could get him back in jail in june. i’m so worried he’s selling my things because he so would. everything i have left is in that house and it’s all at his whim now.
when i moved in with my mom, i started a job at a fancy high end restaurant because i knew it would be good money. i’ve had problems with this my entire life, but ever since starting my job there, i have experienced countless creeps who have sexualized me in more ways then i thought possible. it’s made me feel so worthless. it’s people i work with and people who come in. drunk guys from the bar are the worst, and they’re all filthy rich so they don’t care about a thing in the world. i need to quit but i don’t know where else to go
my dad has now decided as of like two weeks ago, that he will be moving to florida. i never anticipated him moving across the country and leaving the last place i could call home. he also started therapy a couple months ago and his anger issues are pretty much nonexistent at this point. so i got my dad back but now he’s leaving again. i always hoped that as i got older, my family would always be pretty close, close enough that i could seem them once a week if i wanted. it’s really killing me because i was so close to that, to getting my family back. my sister has been in france the last couple years and she’s coming back in a couple weeks. my dad will be moving almost immediately after. we finally got to a point where my mom is free, my dad is happy, we’re all healing, and now my family will be broken up more then ever before by distance. my parents don’t hate each other anymore, my sister is coming home, we would all be able to spend time together again, never more.
so i’m at this point now, where i’ve been fighting for my family, taking every hit with hope in my heart for something i was so close to having, for 7 years i’ve been hoping. and just like that, the light at the end of this very long, cold and dark tunnel fades, and i’m left once again, in the cold dark nothingness that is hoping for a better day, that will never come.
so i’m left questioning, is overcoming another mountain worth it if there’s a whole range of painful climbing ahead of me? i’m so tired, my whole body hurts every day, my mind and soul are toiled with the pain of my lifetime, everyone in my family is moving on with their own paths and it’s only a matter of time before i’m only hearing from them every once in a while. i don’t want to do life, the world is so messed up right now and i don’t see it getting better. there’s too much pain and i can’t handle it. nothing seems worth hoping let alone living for anymore. i bid you adieu and wish you all the best 💗

I'm a Pre-K teacher at a preschool and we are open for summer camps. We are planning a few bike days, a movie day, and a couple water days throughout the summer. Every Friday will be a STEM build challenge day in my class. I'm looking for ideas to make every Wednesday a special day as well. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday will be camp theme days like cooking, chemical reactions, lego challenges, crafts, etc...

Have you ever seen the beautiful women in the famous Japanese prints (ukiyo-e) wearing exquisite combs in their hair?
The name of our shop, Kushi 13-Ya, means the Comb Shop, kushi meaning comb. The shop was founded in 1875.
The special wood for our combs takes forty years to grow and prepare. The boxwood trees are planted in the southern part of Japan, and it takes thirty years for a tree to reach the necessary diameter of 22cm. By then the wood is suitably hard. Cutting and drying the timber correctly takes another ten years. Then it is smoked using its own saw dust. Meticulous care must be given to the processes of smoking and forming the wood.
In making a comb, first the teeth are sawn. They are then polished with shark-skin, a kind of dried grass called tokusa, or the leaves of the muku tree, and finally with deer skin. Japanese craftsman have used these materials for a long time for delicate and fine polishing. Everything must be done entirely by hand. This gives the natural, fine shade and rich luster.
In appreciation of our long experience and skillful workmanship, our combs are offered as a treasure to the Ise Shrine. This great Shinto shrine is dedicated to the Sun-Goddess Amaterasu, who has been worshipped for many centuries by the Japanese people as the ancestor of the Imperial Household. The shrine and all its contents are renewed every twenty years, so we must start preparing the next offering immediately after the previous one has been given.
The traditional craft of making the finest combs is a demanding one and our entire family never cease to work hard to produce combs of ever higher quality and of greater artistry.
The 5th. Master of Jusan-Ya (13-Ya) Kushi
Kyoto, Japan

I’m a teacher’s aide (paraprofessional is what the school calls it) for a preschool in a large private elementary school. I was told that by state law we are required to always stay with the children (2 adults to maintain ratio) so I am not allowed to have a lunch break or a break of any kind. The main teacher in charge of lesson plans and education gets breaks alone when the kids are with specialty teachers or activities, but I understand she appreciates that time to prepare for circle time so it’s not really a break. There is a 40 minute quiet time in the afternoon so I guess I do at least get some quiet and relaxed time with the kids - I’m still expected to help with craft prep and other things during that time though.
Is this normal? I don’t have any education worker experience besides this so I just assumed it’s the same everywhere. I’m probably just whining because it’s the end of the year, and I’m tired like everyone else.
Age range is 3-5 for reference.
Edit: State is Tennessee and regular shift is 7 hours and 30-45 minutes. It depends on how quickly the parents pick up the kids to get below the two person requirement at the end of the day.

Nanny here. It sort of seems that there is an impression that nannies have a lot of downtime during the day, and this seems to be a big rational behind the low salary standard within childcare. I do not understand this impression at all, I personally am lucky if I have 30 minutes to myself just for lunch as I really have to make an effort to carve out time for myself during the day to sit down and take a break. I guess I’m wondering if this is really the norm for nannies or if I am just doing too much for too little.
Between dishes, cooking, laundry, folding, cleaning, engaging with the children, keeping them busy, getting them to and from school and activities, and going to the park, there is hardly any spare time to organise crafts or anything else, let alone sit down even just to eat lunch. There is never any situation where I would be sitting back relaxing while the kids play (they don’t watch TV with me) as there is just never enough time in the day to do everything that needs to be done. If the kids are playing independently, I am doing chores, and if I am not doing chores, I am directly engaging with the kids. I find myself skipping lunch often, at least once a week, just to keep up with the chores and manage enough meaningful time to engage with the kids. I end up on my feet working 9 ½ hour days with no breaks at all far too often (no I do not count the 5-10 minutes I sit down at the park as a break because it is not, I am on my toddlers’ asses the entire time we’re there so I’m lucky if I get to sit down at all).
I understand that many nannies probably are not responsible for as much as I am, but I know many nannies are and many are responsible for even more than I am. I understand that childcare jobs do often ask to waive break rights. When I worked at a preschool I waived my 15m breaks too, but I always received a 30m-1h lunch break in which I was free to do what I please.
I have managed to time the chores perfectly so that I have 30 minutes at lunch to myself, but if there are any extra chores tacked on like grocery shopping, marking cards for family, or if the kids need extra attention in the morning, my break disappears. Just today I was asked to return some rental suits (one of them was for one of the kids so it technically fell under my purview and I’m not one to argue) and of course they asked me to do it while the kids are asleep and their grandma is at home bc they don’t want the kids alone with their grandma, ultimately taking up my time for lunch. Anyway, I just do not feel that I am being paid enough to work this hard and I worked very very hard for my raise that brought me to just $4 above minimum wage.
It’s been two years of this now. When I first started, I mentioned to my employers that it was too much for me to do all of these chores, actively engage with the children, and still have an opportunity to take a break, and they literally just said “we expect you to be able to do all of this, you need to just do it all faster.” I needed this job and it was the best paying job I could find at the time in the area I needed a job in, so I couldn’t really just leave, and when I told them I would need to be paid more, they said they would just pass on hiring me. The first several months I maybe took 1-2 lunch breaks a week. As I have grown more efficient and developed my schedule, I have managed to take real breaks more regularly but it is still a battle every day just to sit down at any point.
I’m young (25), full of energy, type A, and passionate about this job which is the only way I’ve survived the past two years. I get that I shouldn’t accept a job for less than I think I’m worth but there doesn’t seem to be a plethora of positions offering salaries I would truly accept. I am leaving this position and relocating in two months to find a better paying position that gives me a more balanced schedule during the day. I guess I would like to know if this is a shared experience or if I just took on too much with this position. For those of you who work this hard too, what are you paid? I’m trying to gage what I should be expecting to earn going forward to take on this many responsibilities. On top of all of this, I also am trained in and follow RIE, Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and gentle caregiving. I have 5 years experience as a preschool teacher’s assistant and now two years as a private full time nanny (along with 10 years as a babysitter). I certainly do not think that I personally deserve to be paid more than other nannies, but I have trouble believing that the work I do and the experience I have is not worth a much more competitive salary just because I’m young and childcare is something that I naturally am good at and enjoy.
Anyway I’d appreciate any thoughts, advice, or shared or opposing experiences from other nannies or employers.

I’ve been watching horror movies since elementary school and exposed to scary things in general like haunted house attractions since I was in preschool, so needless to say I’m pretty desensitized after a couple decades. The last horror movie I watched that genuinely freaked me out was Terrifier 2, and that’s partly because I watched it on pain meds while recovering from surgery.
I’m looking for something I can watch that’ll really startle and/or freak me out, but also aren’t the same five or six movies I already watch on a regular basis.

• My favorite horror sub-genres are supernatural, sci-fi, and slashers. Some that I watch regularly include: Aliens, The Conjuring franchise (The Nun especially), Doctor Sleep, Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, Insidious 1 and 2, and Pandorum. I like creature features like Tremors and The Thing, but my main go-to is shark movies like Jaws or The Meg. I don’t really like found footage movies with the exception of the original Blair Witch Project.
  
• I have ADHD. Slow burns are very hit or miss for me. I love Sinister and The Shining. I didn’t like Rosemary’s Baby and couldn’t even finish Malignant. I also have trouble focusing on action and text at the same time, so fully subtitled movies are off the table.
  
• No movies where something bad happens to a cat.
  
• I only have access to Hulu, Prime, and basic tier Netflix at the moment.

Reflecting on 2021, truly marked the zenith of my young career. The pandemic was coming to an end, I was fresh from the hallowed halls of a prestigious but unheralded college, thrust into the corporate labyrinth where, as a mere sidekick to the big shots, I contributed to a deal of record-breaking magnitude. My modest corporate minion life was exaggerated into legend by my professors during an alumni reunion, leading to a rather embarrassing episode where I was paraded around as the poster child of their education career’s success. My parents, not ones to shy away from a bit of pomp, lauded my achievements to anyone within earshot.
But as 2022 unfurled its chaos with the epidemic, my professional life spiralled downwards as swiftly as it had risen. I was laid off, and replaced by a nepotistic hire—my boss's new mistress's nephew. During my dismal final days, my colleagues, once comrades became corporate sharks, whispers of them scheming to claim my last efforts as their own filled the empty office spaces.
Compelled by financial duress to abandon my central city dwelling, I relocated to the outskirts with two college mates, Jaz and Kath, who had similarly found themselves victims of the economic downturn. We settled into apartment 606, a unit with dubious charm, suspiciously affordable on the 13th floor of a dreary building, its corridor haunted by a flickering sensor light that was only designed to function on rare occasions. Yet, the apartment itself was surprisingly very well furnished, almost like something that jumped out from a design mag, out beating sample rooms in Ikea, boasting a spacious balcony, a living room ready for an impromptu soirée, a dining table that’s good enough to hold a banquet(became our co-working space) and a kitchen isle that became our sanctuary and curse.
When we first settled into our new abode, we discovered a trove of fine kitchen utensils, perfect for whipping up sophisticated cuisine and crafting cocktails worthy of a swanky soirée. Tucked away in the fridge, among the remnants of the previous tenants' life, was a quaint note: “The three of us really enjoyed our stay here, especially our meals and nights spent by the kitchen island. We hope you find as much joy in it as we did. Use it well.” With a casual flick of my wrist, I dismissed the note into the garbage can, oblivious to the depth of its seemingly innocuous message. Little did I know, that piece of paper was more a passing of the torch than a simple goodbye.
Our initial days in apartment 606 brimmed with camaraderie and impromptu celebrations: movie nights sprawled on the living room sofas, barbeque dinners under the stars on our balcony, and co-working sessions at the dining table, peppered with resume tweaks and contemplative conversations over cocktails. Meanwhile, Jaz updated us on a friend's melodramatic breakup, with guesses that something ugly must have happened behind the scenes. Meanwhile, Jaz had good news for a change: it turned out our friend's love story might have a second act after all, as misunderstandings were being cleared up. Amidst these revelations, Kath, who had been grumbling about the nearby supermarket’s inability to stock anything remotely gourmet, and hadn’t had a taste of her favorite Blue Mountain coffee since the beginning of that year, triumphantly found a can of Blue Mountain coffee, and it was on sale and therefore affordable—proof that miracles happen, and sometimes they even go on discount.
As I sat there, absorbing the serendipity of our discussions manifesting into real-world events, I couldn't help but marvel at the mysterious knack of our kitchen island. Was it merely a coincidence, or had this stylish piece of decor become the unlikely conductor of our lives symphony? One thing was certain: life in apartment 606 was never dull, and our kitchen island seemed to be more than just a place to eat—it was a place where, apparently, you could stir the pot of fate.

Upon returning to our apartment, I found Kath flaunting a chic dress from a designer brand brand she’d snagged on clearance—a little luxury courtesy of our wish-granting island. Inspired, I approached the island and cheekily requested, "Get us jobs. Something fun." Lo and behold, the following day was spent lounging and binge-watching Netflix, only to be interrupted by a call from a former bigwig at my old job. He was venturing into a more illustrious company and wanted me onboard. The informal chat that followed was a breeze, and just like that, I was back in the game with a fancier title and a fatter paycheck.
The subsequent week was a flurry of celebrations. Jaz secured a senior-level position, and Kath landed her dream job at an influencer management agency. Feeling triumphant, we decided to indulge in a night of fine dining—our first in months. That Friday evening when I went from office to restaurant, on a whim, stopped at a convenience store to grab snacks and cigarettes for our post-dinner revelry. Outside, I encountered a homeless person. After offering him a sandwich (which he traded for a cigarette instead), he took a drag, peered into my eyes, and ominously muttered, “Look, young lady, this isn’t my business, but be wary of what you wish for; everything comes with a price. Good luck and god bless you.”
His words barely registered until later that evening when a mishap occurred that seemed to underline his warning. As we enjoyed syphon coffee post-dinner, a barista accidentally tripped over Kath’s flowing dress. The resulting spill left her with first-degree burns, abruptly ending our night as we rushed to the emergency room. Though it was "just" a first-degree burn, the pain was significant enough to require several days off for Kath’s recovery. Amid the drama, I couldn't help but wonder about the cryptic caution from the man outside the store—had our fortunate streak come with a hidden cost?
We chalked up the coffee calamity to bad luck. The next month flowed smoothly: Kath's fingers healed, she returned to work, and I quickly found my groove at the new job. With all of us gainfully employed, our communal meals at the kitchen island became rare. My mornings were a whirlwind of grabbing breakfast and coffee on the go, followed by an hour's commute to a job that had me scarfing down instant noodles by nightfall, just in time for a quick shower.
As the busy season kicked in, my workload ballooned—not just from the seasonal uptick, but because I was hell-bent on proving my mettle. I quickly outshone most of my peers, and my employer, recognizing a budding overachiever, piled on major tasks, which I eagerly accepted. Ah, the price of ambition—a scratchy throat as a permanent reminder of my corporate conquests.
It seemed I had unwittingly exchanged the clarity of my voice for the tumult of career success. In the midst of our domestic enchantment with the possibly mystical kitchen island, Kath unearthed the contact of a reputed psychic, hailed as the finest in the land. However, the consultation fee was nothing short of princely, and with Jaz vehemently dismissing anything that couldn't be explained by cold, hard science, she promptly opted out of splitting the bill. Kath and I, unwilling to drain our wallets on what could be mere phantasmagoria, reluctantly let the opportunity pass.
Meanwhile, I couldn’t help but notice a curious change in Jaz’s routine. She had ceased dining at the kitchen island, avoiding it as if it were cursed—or perhaps, in her view, simply out of style. My inner monologue couldn't resist a dark wish for the crows to scatter, perhaps too dark, for they began to dive bomb our balcony in a feathery kamikaze. To address the repercussions of past wishes, she advised us the first line of defence, which was an eclectic mix of offerings laid out on our cursed countertop: raw meat(rooster works the best), a cocktail of spices(coca and cinnamon preferably), liberal splashes of spirits(whiskey and rum ideally), and an eerie bouquet of black flowers(luckily I found some black roses at a flower shop of the mall). In a grander gesture of appeasement, Kath relinquished her shiny new diamond bracelet, Jaz her absurdly expensive headphones, and I parted with cash—— a hefty slice of my bonus in hopes of placating whatever capricious spirits we'd angered.
Our return to normalcy was brief but sweet, prompting us to plan a getaway, eager to forget about our nefarious kitchen island. Yet, the respite was merely a tease. Jaz, in a stroke of spectacular misfortune, narrowly dodged disaster twice in one day—first nearly becoming subway track fodder on her way back after work, and then almost getting knocked out by a rogue plant at our apartment building’s doorstep. Clearly, our previous offerings were mere appetizers to whatever forces we'd stirred. The psychic, summoned once again to our now-dubious sanctuary, decreed that the spirits had developed rather expensive tastes, unsatisfied by our initial gestures.
In a desperate bid for closure, we had the psychic over for a nighttime ritual, timed perfectly with Earth's closest approach to the netherworld, according to her. Our living room turned into a ritual chamber, with windows blacked out for days, to keep the otherworldly dealings strictly nocturnal. That night, we arranged ourselves around the island, now less a kitchen fixture and more an altar of last resort.
The psychic, amidst a chorus of Latin incantations, directed us through a chilling séance that included a mirror that reflected nothing but darkness and a burning black candle, the three of us sat in a row, joined hands, eyes closed. When the black candle was flickering at its last, the first eerie scratches heard prompted our eyes to open prematurely, we saw a command appear on the island, written by invisible hand and pen, in blood-red script, urging us to find the next "succeeder" before our lease on otherworldly disturbances could be terminated.
With bated breath, we agreed, and as if by magic, our signatures materialized on the countertop, then faded as the candle sputtered out. We tore off the black cardboard taped on the windows at dawn, the sunrise revealed a final message etched into the surface: "Debt cleared." As the daylight grew, the ominous inscription dissolved into nothingness, signalling the end of our spectral saga.
The ordeal, now officially behind us, left us enjoying a semblance of normalcy: life in 606 returned to its mundane rhythm, with dinners and movie nights back on our social calendar. Though not without its scars—literal and figurative.
It’s been two years since then, Jaz, in the throes of romantic bliss, is now gearing up for a new chapter waiting to be written alongside her soon-to-be spouse; Kath, her career finally taking a lucrative turn, was poised to upgrade her living situation, she secured a lease on a lavish serviced apartment in the city center—a place that matched her newfound financial swagger.
I’m not without my own leaps forward. With a modest boost from my parents, I took the plunge into homeownership, snagging a property within the city’s vibrant confines. The process was a whirlwind of paperwork and decorating decisions, culminating in a space I could truly call my own.
As we are packing up now, my last act is to type out our story, at the infamous island, and of course, I left a note in the fridge for the next tenants:

My 2.5 y/o kid literally will not play alone some days. Today is one of them. I am so effing sick, 6 months pregnant w a fever. trying to drink my honey lemon water and suffer on the couch quietly and my sweet little girl keeps shoving her toys in my hand and saying "Can you hold Peppa so she can talk?" "Can you hold Daddy shark so he can talk?" They must come to life only in my hands!! So I have been playing with her for over a hour now and then I just said no, please can you play alone for a bit so mommy can sip her lemon water and rest bc she is not feeling good. And she flipped out and now throwing tantrum on me. First anger and the now she said "I guess playtime is over forever" and bawled 😭😭😭 all the parenting advice says "fill their cup then leave to independent play" but for line its never enough. 5 mins or 5 hours there is no difference.
If I get forced into play when I really don't want to I find myself so annoyed on a deep level. And then consumed by guilt bc why am I like this? And then I will cave and put a screen on for her bc its the only thing that will give me solace and have her attention off me for 5 mins. Then I feel guilt in that. Its a cycle that I feel trapped in some days and I really hate it. I love my child but I find playing with her toys incredibly not enjoyable and I just need her to play independently more. I especially worry about this cycle when new baby gets here and mama has no choice and can't play bc of baby needs I don't want to deal w these tantrum while I have a newborn here too. 😭😭
Any advice on how to get her to be less attached to me. I literally spend my entire waking life being with my child so she is not starved for attention I dote on her and shower her with love. I'd say I spend hours on 1-1 connection, play time where my focus is on her or we are doing crafts etc together.
