2024.06.09 16:00 mmorgar Agentur für Arbeit - Studying German

Hi all! I'm registered as unemployed in the Agentur für Arbeit. When I went to register there in person, they said to me that they may be able to financially help me with taking German language courses. I believe they mentioned something about a voucher I have to request and I have also been reading that I would have to enroll in an integration 'BAMF' certified course, but I find the information a bit confusing.
My question is, what is the process of enrolling in a German course through the Agentur für Arbeit (what are the steps)? I.e.: where can I find a list of courses that I can take? How do I officially request their financial help for it? (I would like to enroll in a B1 level course, perhaps even an intensive one).
I find it very hard to get this information from the Agentür directly since I cannot hold a conversation about this in German and they often are not replying my messages, so any help is much appreciated! Thank you all :)

2024.06.09 15:35 RepresentativeWeek88 Sudeten German citizenship

Would it be possible to qualify for German citizenship by decent through heimats recht from my great grandfather and great grandfather both of whom had it it Skalitz in Moravsky Krumlov.
My great grandmother was born in Germany but later married my great grandfather in 1911.
They both had home right in Skalitz my great grandfather in 1896 and my great grandmother in 1916 with my grandfather?
Just to add on to the post my great grandmother left Czechoslovakia in 1920 with my great grandfather and never naturalized anywhere else my grandfather was born in SA in 1914 but lived there from 1915 to 1920.
My great grandfather left Czechoslovakia in 1903 and never went back as far as i know but there is a list domovsky for him in 1920 that I suspect his wife got on his behalf. He naturalized in 1922 in SA.

2024.06.09 15:01 ibid-11962 Worldbuilding and Touring [Post Murtagh Christopher Paolini Q&A Wrap Up #10]

As discussed in the first post, this is my ongoing compilation of the remaining questions Christopher has answered online between August 1st 2023 and April 30th 2024 which I've not already covered in other compilations.
As always, questions are sorted by topic, and each Q&A is annotated with a bracketed source number. Links to every source used and to the other parts of this compilation will be provided in a comment below.
The previous post focused specifically on inspirations and other media. This installment will focus on Worldbuilding and Touring, how Christopher constructs his worlds, and how he goes about promoting them on tours. The topics aren't actually linked, but they both fill up around half a post and so are being joined here. The next and final post will focus on miscellaneous questions about the real world.

Worldbuilding

Creating Magic Systems
Did you have a research process when you were writing the Inheritance Cycle? I put a fair bit of thought into the story itself of the Inheritance Cycle, and then some general stuff as to the society and just kind of where things were in the world before writing it. I put a medium amount of thought into the magic system before I started writing, and then as I wrote the implications of it became much more apparent to me, and I really sort of dove deep into it. In retrospect, were I to create a fantasy world from scratch now, I would really put a lot of attention into that magic system and the society beforehand, just to have a good feel for that before I even start chapter one. I would put more restrictions on the magic too. I think the more restrictions, the more interesting, even the more realistic in some ways. [3]
If I were designing a magic system from scratch nowadays I would put way more restrictions on it because I find that the limitations are useful, I don't want the characters getting overpowered, but also just from a storytelling standpoint, incantations, rituals, spells, prayers, potions, all of those mechanical things are just kind of interesting and of course they give lots of opportunities for things to go wrong if you don't follow the correct steps. So I think if I were designing magic from scratch right now I'd put a lot of restrictions and rituals associated with it. So costs, more costs. [25]
What kind of hacks do you have to developing a magic system? Once I have a general idea of the setting, whether science fiction or fantasy, the first question I ask myself is how does it diverge from physics as we know it? Because that is a fundamental question that's going to determine what is possible in this world. It might determine what's possible with warfare, with politics, with industry, manufacturing, travel times, it could affect everything depending on what type of divergence you have. In the World of Eragon, the divergence is that living creatures have the ability to directly manipulate energy using their minds. The reason for that is kind of handwavy, although I have an explanation for it, but that is the divergence and then I tried to be as consistent and physically possible with it at every step of the way past that. When people play games you always get people who are looking how to exploit it. "What's the most I can get out of this game? What's the most I can do?" That's basic human nature. Science is a speedrunning nature I think. So the same sort of thing. You assume that if magic existed there's going to be someone sitting in their basement who's absolutely obsessive about it and is going to figure out every single advantage that that divergence gives them. And you have to be realistic and work that into your world and say "Well people aren't stupid. They are going to figure this out and use it in this way, and what are the implications, socially, physically, and everything else?" Once I have that then you can think about society and culture and everything else, but that basic physical difference from our reality is just to me fundamentally important to understand before I even begin to write. [25]
With standalones you're not dealing with continuity or what rule did you break or things like that. That's interesting, because I would say that writing a sequel for me is faster than writing a standalone. At least for me, the more I know the characters and the world, the faster, like I don't have to do the groundwork of creating a magic system, creating a society, creating the gods and the history. All that's done for me, so I can just slip into it like slipping on an old glove. [33]
Creating Religions
A socio-political religion in your world helps drive characters or stories or die-hard fanatic characters forward. How do you go about developing those? Have the courage to let your characters actually believe the things that they are supposed to believe. If you look back historically people really did truly believe these different religions and different systems. Too often I think with modern stories we have people only giving lip service to the supposed belief and instead having very modern attitudes toward it which perhaps doesn't always work. That's understandable if you want a character to be relatable to a modern reader, but there are so many examples of interesting belief systems throughout the world. To me that's something fascinating to write about. But the main thing is just accept that when people truly believe something they're genuine about it and then you can follow that from a logical and storytelling standpoint. What I'd also say is, if you're writing about something that is very different from your own belief system, assuming it's not like completely evil, to try to approach it with a sense of charity. With the understanding that everyone is searching for meaning and understanding. I've always had a soft spot for the old television show Babylon 5, because although I don't believe that the creator J. Michael Straczynski is religious, he writes all of his characters with great sympathy and understanding, he's never cynical about it, and he's not putting up straw man arguments or criticizing any of the characters. He's like "They're searching for meaning. They're struggling with the great questions as we all do, and each one is trying to solve those questions in their own way." And I always really appreciated that he wasn't being cynical about it or really shallow. [25]
Creating Languages
Did you think of the ancient language, not just as a mechanic, but also as a parable of our own language? I was thinking about how language itself feels like magic to me. You can write a story, you can convey information. Language in many ways is our greatest tool and makes us human along with, I would argue, our hands, our ability to manipulate objects and use actual tools. But one without the other wouldn't really work and wouldn't allow us to be a technological species. We could have language with no ability to handle tools, and then we wouldn't be what we are now. But I find language fascinating and I find the function of language incredibly interesting. And there is this idea in the real world going back to the beginning of time, that to name something is to understand it, and gives you a certain amount of power over it, whether that's a person or a physical object. And the ancient language is just taking that idea seriously. And I'm not the first author or tradition to do that, but is it a parallel? Is it a metaphor? I don't know if I'd go that far, but it definitely ties into the use of language and my ideas about it. What's crazy to me is there is a theoretical arrangement of words right now that would give us a massive breakthrough in science and physics. There's a theoretical arrangement of words that were I to write it or anyone else would influence how people think about the next presidential election to such a degree that it might actually changed the election. These are all theoretically possible and you can think of many many other things that you could do with language. We just lack the knowledge of what those arrangement of words are, and so we're constantly clawing our way toward new knowledge and new uses of language. [19]
The languages that you were playing around with in The Inheritance cycle, they were Germanic, Anglo Saxon based? The ancient language, the magical language, is based very strongly on Old Norse, which of course is Germanic or related to Old High German. The Dwarven language was invented pretty much from scratch although it is an agglutinative language like German is. And then the other languages have not appeared very much in the series. They're just little scraps here and there. To be clear, I am not a linguist, and I have not devoted the time and energy to developing these in a formal or rigorous way, the way that Tolkien did. Tolken was a linguist and that was his forte. I got far enough down that path while working on the Inheritance Cycle that I really began to appreciate how every word has a history and that history is inexorably tied to the history of the land. It's often said that Tolkien created Middle-earth just to explain his languages, as a setting for the languages. Which isn't entirely true, but there is truth to that. That's what I was encountering and I was realizing that I could spend 20 years, 10 years, just working on the languages and building this out. It might have been a worthwhile venture, but the tradeoff would have been no more books published during that time. I want to tell a story. [28]
What I would do these days, or what I did with other languages, is come up with a couple of words that sort of had a general feel that I liked and then extrapolating from those invented words, figuring out what consonants and vowels and clusters thereof that I wanted. Come up with some more sample words based off that and then start working out some grammar. Grammar is probably my weakest spot since at the time I wasn't really aware of non-English grammar systems and I've put some more attention in that since then. [34]
The language and culture that you describe in the books seem very real. How do you start inventing a language? You shamelessly steal from Germanic mythology and Scandinavian mythology, just like Tolkien did. But I'm no linguist, I did my best, I have a copy of the Nibelungen up on my shelf along with the Eddas, and I based one of my languages on Old Norse, which gave it a nice sound and feel. So the main thing is picking things that make sense for your world and then trying to be internally consistent. [2]
Creating Maps
At what point in your writing process do you start creating the map? I've created the maps at different times in different books. At first I thought I didn't need a map because I thought that a good book should be perfectly understandable without a map. You shouldn't need to rely on anything outside of the text in order to enjoy it. And I still think that's generally true, but a map can add a lot. So for Eragon, I did it partway through the book. If I were to do a stand-alone fantasy novel, I would definitely want to work out the maps and stuff before writing it. [12]
The map for Eragon, the original black and white map, I did about halfway or a third of the way into Eragon. My idea was, and I still kind of believe this, that a well-written book shouldn't need a map in order to understand the story. You should be able to keep your bearings just based off the text. What I ran into though was that I was getting lost in the world myself with the amount of places and things after a certain point. And so I drew a map. [34]
For me I think if you're creating something in the real world obviously that gives you certain constraints and certain advantages but if you're starting with something from scratch, I find creating a map right up front is really helpful because your story is not going to visit every square inch on your map so by filling in those other details on the map you're going to get more story ideas and also ideas for potential conflicts, travel distances. It all feeds into the realism of the story as well as potentially future stories. It's fun stuff. The downside is you could spend your whole life worldbuilding. There's a there's a book from World War Two called Islandia, and the guy just spent his whole life creating this island and its culture to the point of working out the actual layers of geography of stone in the island. I've never actually read the book, I don't know if it's any good, but I know it was fairly popular when it came out. [25]
What hacks do you have for for creating geography and points of interest within your world? When I was creating the map for Alagaësia I actually used a old National Geographic Atlas and traced over various coastlines and then distorted them and pasted on top of each other in order to get sort of a natural feeling coastline. Please don't compare the island of Vroengard to the outline of Greece. Please don't do that. And then you have Robin Hobb who just turned Alaska upside down for her map which I always love because I've lived in Alaska twice. I think she told me that she never actually expected the book to get published, but then she got stuck with that because everything was tied to the geography that she started with. [25]
I think that a good map ought to have lots of points of interest, and the tricky bit is, without getting so detailed that it becomes cluttered. You see that sometimes with real world maps, like atlases and stuff, where there's a ton of place names, city names, river names, road names. All of which are useful and necessary, but it can actually visually get in the way of the art, perhaps the artistic effect that you would want a fantasy map to have in a book or a movie or even a game. [12]
There are world generators that you can just click through. It's really easy nowadays with technology to build worlds just by snapping your fingers. Even with those tools, if you have the time and inclination, I think there is some benefit to redrawing or painting the maps in your own style. I don't know about you, I love seeing when the maps are from the author themselves. I remember Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn by Tad Williams. Tad did all the maps himself, and I love that. Even if it's imperfect or a little amateurish it just gives it a really nice feel. I love Tolkien's original art for the same reason. [25]
Creating Dragons
You are the creator of your own world. Do you feel that you have follow certain canons of fantasy worlds, for example, dragons have four legs and wyverns have two? Or do you feel that you can practically do whatever you want because it's fantasy and you create everything? Yes and no. No because I have already established rules and traditions and precedence in The World of Eragon, so I have to be consistent with that. But if I were writing a new fantasy, I would not feel beholden to any tradition. If I wanted to write a world where the dragons have three legs or feathers or something like that then I would feel free to do that. That's the great thing about speculative fiction is it gives you the freedom to write and create whatever you want to. The thing is when you have a genre where anything is possible it actually reveals the limitations of your imagination. And there are very few authors, myself included, who really make full use of that. But at the same time, limitations can make your fiction more interesting. I think it's important to pick some limitations and that will help actually improve the quality of your work. [7]
Why did you decide to have your dragons have a saddle? I was around horses growing up. And the thought of actually physically being on a creature with very hard scales was rather terrifying if thought about in a practical sense. And so it just seemed to me that there had to be some protection. [33]
When you're writing fantasy and you include dragons, especially a dragon rider fantasy, depending on how many there are there, it's actually quite a difficult thing to not solve all your problems with dragons. I think the solution to that is you focus on the problems that dragons present, which balances out the advantages. And of course people are smart, whether we're talking about humans or elves or dwarves or any other invented species. If dragons were real, you'd come up with counters to them, whether it's a bunch of giant ballistae on your walls, or building domed fortresses, or building underground. You would come up with solutions and it would negate those advantages. And that's always my issue with writing fiction with dragons in the real world. If it's a slightly more modern, then you have to ask, well, why isn't everything different in history? Like if dragons were a constant part of our world, architecture would be different, warfare would be different, politics would be different. Well, no, politics would be the same. What am I saying? [30]
I'm sure all of us have seen the fantasy paintings of like a knight in armor with a lance on a horse facing off against a dragon. Now, to be fair, a lance moving at a decent speed at a horse galloping will have enough kinetic energy behind it to punch through just about anything. It could do a lot of damage. But any decent sized dragon would move so fast and be so strong, you wouldn't have a chance with a lance. You'd need a giant crossbow. That'd be your only choice. The size of a dragon, intelligence of a dragon. Until you get to projectile weapons, you have no chance. [30]
We all know what any creature gets when they bond with a dragon. They get a dragon. But why would a dragon create that bond? Why would they do it? Is it the bond, is it their nature? I think for me, having other species bond with the dragons was essentially a way to keep the dragons from getting wiped out. Because dragons are such a huge threat. If you imagine in the real world, we don't suffer giant predators to be constantly predating and disrupting our world. We remove that threat. Especially if there's magic involved, the ability to remove that threat gets even bigger. So in a way I viewed the bond between rider and dragon as essentially self preservation for the dragons, if not the other species as well. Without some sort of symbiotic relationship, coexistence becomes very, very difficult. That, or the dragons have to be smart enough to just essentially remove themselves from the world and live off in the far off places. But that gets really difficult when you start considering how much they need to eat. I remember reading the Live Ship Trader series and I remember the end of that spoiler alert where it's become clear that true dragons have returned now. And it really was kind of an oh crap moment because you start thinking about what that actually means for there to be dragons in the world again. It's kind of like Reign of Fire. [30]

Promoting The Books

Touring Hazards
How did you do on your book tour? It was a lot. It was a lot. I did 50 days of touring last year between Fractal Noise and Murtagh. Obviously the majority of that was for Murtagh. And of course I had a couple other trips in there as well. I went to New York Comic Con. I had one or two personal trips. So there was a lot of travel last year. My goal is to not have as much travel this year. In general, the book tours were awesome, great crowds for the Fractalverse, enormous crowds for World of Eragon/Murtagh. I don't normally talk about this stuff, but since we're past it, it doesn't matter. I started touring for Murtagh November 6th and then got home for good on December 16th. But there's always a risk of getting sick while you're traveling. And I did pretty well in the US leg of things. And then over in Europe between the jet lag and not sleeping- I had a really amazing dinner, one of my publishers took me out to a three star Michelin restaurant. The problem was the dinner started at 8pm and didn't finish till midnight. And there were two or three desserts, and the last dessert was full of coffee, and I didn't realize it. Absolutely full of coffee. And I did not get to sleep until like four in the morning. And I only had three hours of sleep that night. So I think I got sick the day after as a result. I got so sick on the European tour that at one of my stops I had to call paramedics to my hotel room at 2 a.m. because I couldn't breathe. Ended up with bronchitis for the first time in my life. But I'll have you know, I did every event. I didn't miss a single event. I managed to do all my presentations and made it through in one piece. I've never, never backed down from doing an event, even while bleeding. Can you tell us a little bit about the time that you were bleeding in an event? Well, I was in Europe. I was touring for Inheritance, I'd already toured North America, and then I started in Europe, went to UK, and then I went to Australia and New Zealand. But first country was Germany, and I think I did Munich and Cologne, and then I ended in Berlin. And in Berlin, they had me in this wonderful theater that's like over 100 years old, which is very rare in the city, considering all the bombing during the war. And I'm backstage, which meant down in the basement of this theater. And there's like 500 people out waiting for me to make an appearance and there's someone introducing me and they say my name and everyone starts clapping. And of course you want to get on stage before the applause dies down. And the way you got onto stage in this theater was through a set of stairs. And it really wasn't even steps. It was almost like a ladder and it was wood. And the steps were so old that they were basically hollowed out from all the people that have gone up and down it over the years. So I'm scrambling up this and about halfway up, my right foot slipped off the edge of one of the steps because it was hollowed out and full speed, full strength, full weight, I slammed my shin into the edge of one of the steps, stumbled forward two more steps and did it a second time. But momentum, adrenaline, I keep going, I get up on stage, I waved to everyone. And fortunately for me, because I was speaking to a foreign audience, they had me sitting at a table with a translator and a presenter. So I got to sit down and the table kind of hit everything from view. And I start the presentation, start the event. And after about, I don't know, five minutes, I'm thinking to myself, okay, I've banged my shin before. We've all banged our shins before, but this really bleepin' hurt. So I looked under the table and the whole front of my jean leg on my shin is soaked with blood. There is blood dripping onto the floor and my sock is soaked with blood. So I poked my translator, the presenter next to me that I was doing a couple of events with, and I said, "Hey, look at this". And he glances under and his face just goes white. And I'm colorblind and I saw his face go white. And he said, "Do we need to call an ambulance?" And I'm like, "No, no, we're going to do this." So I did an hour-long presentation. And then I got up and managed to quickly limp over to a signing table. And no one really noticed that I wasn't feeling so hot. And I got behind the signing table, and I signed books for 400 or 500 people. And the funny thing is, I was traveling with this foreign rights agent publicist for Random House named Jocelyn, who was just an absolute beast of a woman. I love her to death. You have to understand, she did a European book tour with me while eight months pregnant. The woman was and is just very impressive. But she grew up on a farm. German family in the US, grew up on a farm. So I showed her my leg when I was sitting down to sign and she just looked at me and she said, "You need to go to the hospital?" I said, "Nope". She said, "I knew you were country. Good man." Slapped me on the back. So I finished signing and then I went back to the hotel and I had to get into a tub of water to soak my jeans off because the blood had dried and glued them to my shin. And the problem was I had a dent all the way down to the bone. And I really should have gone to a hospital because, sorry for the gory details, but what happens is when you get a dent like that, you lose the fat under the skin between the skin and the bone and it doesn't come back unless you get an injection to help it puff out and heal. And I didn't do that because I was on tour, there was no time. So the next day I had to fly to pretty sure it was Barcelona for the St. George Book Festival, which is a walking festival. So you have to walk from bookstore to bookstore in the city and do signings. But that was a bit rough. That actually took over a year to heal properly. I still have that dent. Stuff happens. I've heard some crazy stories with other authors. I'd rather it's my blood, not the fan's blood. [32]
Touring Difficulties
We've got blood and sweat, any tears from tour? On occasion. The biggest one is just being away from home. And if anything is a bit off for whatever reason, you can't just pop home and hold someone or do this or do that. It's just difficult to be that far away from home for so long. [32]
If you're not familiar with book tours, the way it often works is that you fly to a city, you get to your hotel room, you have a little bit of time to freshen up, maybe get some food and then you go to the bookstore and you do your event. And it has to be after people get off from work, so it tends to be a later evening event. If you have a large number of people show up, that means that that time spent talking and signing pushes fairly late in the evening. You go back, you get dinner, and if you're a semi-introvert like so many authors tend to be, you need some time to decompress, which means you probably stay up a little too late reading or writing. And then in the morning, you got to go get another airplane flight and go to the new city. All of which is fine, but going to the airport, doing those flights, with the time it takes to go through an airport these days, it means that the schedule has very little time in it. When I toured for Fractal Noise, the publisher one of the days had me fly from Tampa to Portland and I still had to do an event that day. Which I agreed to. It was my own fault because they had everything on the East Coast and I said, "Well, what about the West Coast? You know, I have readers on the West Coast. They need to get a chance to get a signed book." It was my own fault. But that can get rough when you're doing it for weeks on end at a certain point. You just can't recover. A day off? What's that? But it's a good problem to have. That people want to see you and want to read your books. It's an awesome career to have. [1]
I'm also a big fan of coffee naps. So I will drink a cup of coffee, usually my second cup of coffee, and then I'll go take a nap, and I will nap for about 30 minutes, because after 30 minutes the coffee wakes me up. And I find that 15 to 30 minutes is the perfect length of a nap for me, and if I go past that, I need to sleep for about three hours, because otherwise I get into the middle of a REM cycle, and if I wake up in the middle of a REM cycle, I'm just like groggy and drugged, and I feel worse than if I hadn't napped at all. And then of course, if you're on book tour, the way I have been for a while, you gain the ability to just close your eyes at any point and take a 10 minute nap 15 minute nap anywhere, and it at least helps you stay upright. [19]
Meeting Fans around the World
You just got back from the U.S. leg of your book tour — who’s making up the crowd? The readership is broad and probably older than it was back in the day. There are still a lot of 8-year-olds, but now there are grandparents, too. I’ve even met some kids who’ve been named after the characters, which is pretty amazing. Because people have been reading the series for so long, I tend to get a mix of incredibly detailed, hyper-focused, deep-dive questions about some of the lore, but also some more general ones about Eragon’s name. [16]
I'm sure you hear personal stories all the time especially at your readings and your your appearances. It must be lovely, and I guess overwhelming to connect with your fans. That's a good way of putting it: lovely and overwhelming. Everyone has their own personal history with these books. I have people showing up who named their children after the characters, or who've gotten tattoos. Oh my goodness, what's the one you get? Multiple Saphiras, Aryas, Rorans, a couple of Eragons. As a writer, you want people to read your stories, enjoy them, be affected by them. If they're affected so strongly they name their children after your characters, you feel pretty good about it. [28]
Are your European fans different from your American fans? I actually haven't met any children here who are named after characters from my books. That seems to be an American phenomenon. The language barrier sometimes makes it a little more difficult to talk to European fans. But the love for Eragon is just as strong in Europe as it is in the US. This is not your first time on tour in Europe. Is there something you're missing here? I actually noticed that hotels in Europe usually don't have ironing boards or irons. This is standard equipment in America. [24]
My great-grandmother was from Sicily and then my grandfather was from Bologna. I just found out recently that my grandfather as a child was tutored by Fellini's wife. [7]
My grandfather was the stereotype of an elderly Italian gentleman. He had a mustache, he cooked spaghetti and he made the most amazing red sauce for the spaghetti. He used too much profanity. He was quite the character. [35]
Amsterdam is a beautiful city, but if I had grown up here I would probably still have written fantasy, but it would probably have influenced the type of fantasy I write. [23]
I was just in Stockholm on book tour for my latest book. And I've sold a really large number of books, proportionally in Sweden, and I'd never been there before. And I was kind of curious what their thoughts and feelings were on it, given the fact that I have shamelessly pillaged, Anglo-Saxon Scandinavian mythology for my own work. And they said native Swedish authors don't write using their own mythology, they go into the more literary veins and they import and translate other authors who are writing about Scandinavian mythology and they enjoy it immensely, but it doesn't seem to be a homegrown thing for them, which is rather odd, I think. [30]
Old Norse is not so far from German, do you speak a little bit of German? I understand a fair bit. When I've done presentations in Germany, I've had children ask me questions in German, and I can sometimes understand the entire question without translation, but I only speak a few words. [Host 2]: Let's try it. Can you ask the next question in German? Of course. Oh dear. Translation please. That was not fair. But funny. Yeah, I was just asking, when you started writing the book, and it became not just one book, it became a whole world, it became a series, and I don't want to spoil anything, but if you read the first books and you read the later books, stuff comes up again, and it seems like you actually knew where it was going when you started writing, which is again insane because you were 15. Is that something you just got lucky, or did you really plan for a whole series when you started writing the first one? I planned because I tried writing some stories before Eragon, and I never got past the first five or ten pages because I didn't have a story. I would only have an inciting incident, like a young man finds a dragon egg in the forest. Well, fun, awesome, but that's not a story. So Eragon and the series as it was, was a writing exercise for myself to see if I could outline, plot, and then write at least the first book of a series. So yes, if you read the first book, Eragon, there's actually a scene, a dream sequence in the first book. And it is the very last scene of the last book. And I did that specifically so that I could point to it and say to my readers, "See, I knew what I was doing." But of course, it isn't the last book now. [2]
Before he finished signing them all he asked if I read Fractal Noise, I said yes. He then asked how I liked it. I said I liked To Sleep far more. And to be fair I did. But I could've been a little more less brunt about it. All in all I'm sorry Paolini. I hope you see this. Dude -- No need to apologize! I was the one who put you on the spot. I was just curious about Fractal Noise as it's pretty different from what I normally write. That said, I'm a big boy, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest if someone prefers one book over another. [R]
Have you been on TikTok? How do you find it? I have an account that my assistants post content on for me because I don't have the time and I don't want it on my phone, but it has been a really useful way to connect with readers, and I had a lot of people who came up during my book tour end of last year, who said that they found out about the events I was doing from the posts on TikTok. [33]
Outside of the tour, did you do anything to personally celebrate the release of Murtagh? No. Not to sound blase, but this isn't my first book I've released. Going on the tour is the celebration. Getting to meet the fans. It's an enormous expenditure of energy, time, effort, and it's very joyous and touching and meaningful for me. And I think for a lot of the readers. So that's the celebration. My team and I, we all kind of take a moment to pat ourselves on the back every time a book comes out and then it's back to the grind a bit. Also, I got to celebrate my 40th birthday while on book tour, and I got to celebrate it with my editor, my publicist, my former publicist who's been with me since the beginning. So that was really nice. [32]
Appearance
Being an author is like the best kind of semi-celebrity, because nine times out of ten, no one knows who you are, you can live a nice quiet life, and then you get to go out and meet people who like your work. And that's a real treat. I grew the beard partly to keep people from recognizing me. But then I've had it for so long that it doesn't work anymore. And I got tired of shaving. But the problem is the beard takes so much time and effort to take care of it, it doesn't save me any time. [1]
Did your hat end up getting fixed post-tour? Yup. Fixed it myself with a rivet. [T]
Any advice on how to wear a pirate's hat without it being weird? It's very simple. There's one ingredient. You wear it with confidence. That's all. [36]
Signing Books
People people don't maybe don't realize what an endurance race it is, especially when when books are this big and successful. Like the amount. I once did 9,280 books in an afternoon and a half at a warehouse. I had nine people helping. I stood. I find that if I stand, I don't use my wrist. I can isolate the arm. And I just had someone shove it under me, someone pull it out for me, and everyone else was boxing, unboxing and flapping. But it hurt. It really hurt. I dropped my first name this past year. For the first time in a 20 year career, I finally dropped my first name. Did you feel defeated? Yes. But I have kids now and I just could not afford the time and the strain on my body. I actually got two typewriters. I got really bad inflammation in my right thumb from all the signing and I find that typewriters alleviated that. Also heavier like mechanical keyboards seem to help. So I know like Robin Hobb has suffered some severe problems with her hands with the amount of typing she's done over the years. So yeah, it is an occupational hazard. [33]
I have to say, signing 30,000 sheets is SIGNIFICANTLY harder than mining or placing 30k blocks in #Minecraft. Lol. [T]
Do you have a PO Box or something? I’d pay shipping both ways to have you sign my books. P.O. box is listed on paolini.net. Just include return shipping, please. :D Alternatively, you can arrange signed copies through Conley's Books & Music in Livingston, MT. [R]
If I send a book to a P.O. Box and pay for shipping there and back, would you sign it? Yup. Address is on paolini.net [T]

2024.06.09 14:17 Erft Why do some editions of Euclid's Elements contain only three axioms?

I'm currently preparing my lecture and because it's going to be about Euclid's Elements, I've been looking for a nice edition to put pictures of the aspects we're talking about next to it. Since I teach in German, I've been looking for German-language editions (I'm adding it because it could be a phenomenon that only occurs in certain areas). I noticed that there are some German-language editions in which only three axioms (i.e. "postulates" in Euclid's terminology) are listed, more precisely the first three, so that the postulate that all right angles are equal to each other and in particular the parallel postulate are missing.
Does anyone know why this is the case? Is it a case of "I don't understand, I'll leave it out"? This (edition)[https://books.google.de/books?id=kriQOtZtmEgC&printsec=frontcover&dq=euklid+elemente&hl=de&newbks=1&newbks\_redir=0&sa=X&redir\_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false\] is from 1732, so before the introduction of non-Euclidean geometries (although spherics was of course known), is it related to this?
Obviously I'm to stupid to embed links, so maybe I'll need some help with that, too.

2024.06.09 13:56 ExtremeResearcher284 Situation in Mannheim/islamists in Germany

Hello, now we will discuss a painful topic. I hope it’s not just for me, but for the majority of Germans in Germany. This is the topic of Muslims and their terrorist "religion" – Islam.
Of course, I am creating this topic after I have been to Mannheim and after the news that an Islamist killed a police officer with a knife and injured several others, and specifically after the criticism of Islam. I am creating this topic because MAYBE IT'S ENOUGH TO BE SILENT AND TOLERATE IT!?
In essence, an average German in their own country cannot go out on the street with criticism of Islam because there is a high chance that they will be stabbed right on the street. Moreover, a person in a democratic and independent European country is AFRAID to express their dissatisfaction due to the mostly inadequate representatives of Islam, who FOR SOME REASON carry a knife everywhere. Apparently, this is part of their "great culture."
Personally, I have the feeling that if Muslims protest, nothing will happen to them. If Germans protest, they automatically put their lives at risk.
I have a question. How can a German in Germany express their opinion and dissatisfaction if even comments on YouTube from "de Welt" are closed? Why are they closed? To avoid inciting interethnic hatred? Germans, who pay incredibly high taxes to their state, do not have the right to express themselves in their own country.
I repeat, Islamists carry knives on the street and tend to kill innocent people just like that or because someone looked at them wrongly or, God forbid, criticized Islam. Does this mean I have no right to criticize Islam? Islam is a sponsor of terrorism? Ever heard of that? It is so. It's A FACT.
-WHY do they allow themselves to live in Europe and demand respect for their religion from others, while they do not respect and pollute the European culture in which they live?
-WHY does a person on the street in Germany in a Santa Claus costume needs to defend himself from knife attacks? Because Muslims "respect" our traditions like this?
-WHY do Islamists play their shitty music loudly, WHY do they pollute children playgrounds, WHY do they constantly litter and scream all along the street or in public transport... and show other forms of disrespect towards the culture in which they live towards the people, who surroud them, while simultaneously demanding respect for "their culture and "religion."
-WHY do they feel so comfortable in Germany and think they can do whatever they want and there will be no consequences for them? Dont worry, Not because we gave them this comfort, but because they are simply brazen ungrateful - aggressive, petty, vengeful, ill-mannered self confident cretins with flattened skulls, and they are taught this from childhood. They are taught to hold a knife in their hand from childhood. Their children, already being in German schools/kindergartens, bully German children.
A familiar situation: a Muslim child often bullies a Ukrainian child in a school and says that he would "f*k" his mother and shows it with his body by touching ukrainian child. The Ukrainian child, in a fit of desperation, shouts: "take this black finally away from me!"
The Muslim child reports this to his parents. The situation reaches the school principal, who says that if this happens again, if the Ukrainian child "says something racist again," the Ukrainian child will be expelled from school. And not the Muslim one in any way.
Now let's return to the question of why they still feel so comfortable. Because the smart ones among them can always say that "if you make a remark to me - you are a racist." And for some reason, Germans are very afraid of this.
-Why do Muslims usually not walk alone, but in groups, so that even a police officer is afraid to look at them or, moreover, to make a remark?
Because they know this. They know that they instill fear in the ordinary people of Germany. Neither the police officer will make a remark to them nor, especially, the elderly grandmother who has lived in this country all her life and who is simply pained to see all this.
They know that they instill fear, and we know that even if you "look at Islamists the wrong way," they can come close to you and, at best, shout or make faces in front of you....
AND WHY can't Islam be banned as a "religion" on a legislative level?
Islam is not a religion - but a sponsor of terrorism.
And WHY can't those who are not ready to renounce the Islamic religion be deported?
I personally support the idea that those who are ready to renounce this "religion" should stay because if a person is adequate, they understand what Islam is and will renounce it.
And most importantly: HOW MANY HOW MANY times must the people of Germany suffer terrorist attacks from Islamists before the German government finally does something...
I could continue for a long time, but you can also share your list of "WHYS" and so on below⬇️

2024.06.09 12:34 PolicePlease Studium der Grammatik: Wo leuchtend die Räder des Schicksals rotieren

Who is PolicePlease? He's my deceased husband who passed away last year at about this time. I miss him and just felt like posting under his tag. Marilynnnn
For our new viewers, in most Nena songs we find a couple of interesting grammatical points that we cover here. I am just an A2/B1 German-language learner like most of you. If you happen to be native speaker or just more advanced, please consider pitching in because sometimes I am guessing!
There is one line I am struggling with: Wo leuchtend die Räder des Schicksals rotieren. I get the general meaning, "Where the wheels of fate spin brightly."
My questions are whether the word "leuchtend" is placed in the right part of the sentence and what is its part of speech: adjective, adverb, or past participle verb.
Andinio reached out to his German coach who here goes by the initials "RU" and she was kind enough to send us some points.
"Wo leuchtend die Räder des Schicksals rotieren." is a possible sentence structure, especially in songs or poetry. In a normal sentence, I would probably prefer: "Wo die Räder des Schicksals leuchtend rotieren."
But you can basically do the same with the English sentence. You wrote "Where the wheels of fate spin brightly," because that's probably your preferred sentences structure, but I could also say "Where brightly spin the wheels of fate." This would give it a more poetic feel, but not something you'd use in a normal sentence. Same applies to Nena's sentence in the song.
Next she answers my part-of-speech question:
German does not distinguish between adjectives and adverbs like English does, and you often have one German word that acts as both adjective and adverb.
I just recently had this discussion with another German-language learner who was totally confused by the word "bestimmt." She had looked it up in the dictionary and found that it means "certain" but the sentence we were talking about was Das ist bestimmt richtig. In this sentence, "bestimmt" means "certainly" and not "certain". Not a big difference in German, whereas in English it is.

2024.06.09 12:27 Safe-Library-1030 Auto translate stopped working

Hey there! Long story short, after I switched my default language from German to English, with the help from support, my Auto translation feature does unfortunately no longer worked.
I already contacted support about this persistent issue but had no answers/ help so far.
Maybe someone here knows why this happens and has a solution at hand?
For clarification, I had to manually add the English language to 180+ of my listing for the support team to be able to change default language from German to English.
I'd did that for easier SEO research and because we're selling internationally.
My default language is now in fact English, and I added a couple new listings already without a manual German translation, but the auto translation feature just refuses to work now.
I guess it's a big in their system. I already tried turning everything off and on again, supported language and the auto translation feature, I also tried deleting the manual German translation all listings have, still no luck.
Translation now only works for listings with manual German/English translation, every other language won't be translated unfortunately which obviously costs me a lot of potential reach and costumers.

2024.06.09 11:47 Puzzleheaded-Log-821 Seeking advice for getting accomodation in Germany (Berlin / Hamburg)

I am trying to get into Germany via Chancenkarten so before I apply for the opportunity card at the embassy, I needed some clarification regarding somethings and agencies like ZAV are taking too much to provide any response:
  1. Is Berlin the best city which can likely provide a job as Java/react/python developer? (I am a mid fullstack Java developer with almost 2 years 6 months experience)
  2. I found housinganywhere to have listed the best pricing for long term stay but they require employment contract and proof of income. Would showing my current employment contract in India along with my savings in newly created blocked account suffice?
  3. To even book the accomodation, i would have to provide a date. I am considering a September end date as my notice period is 90 days. Assuming I book the housing now and by next week, I finally submit all my documents to the German mission in Mumbai, would this be sufficient enough time to get the opportunity card visa?

2024.06.09 10:52 IceBerryStraw I wrote to a German Finance MM Company regarding Gamestop

I wrote to a German Finance MM Company regarding Gamestop
Since the german media isn't as corrupt as the american MM I gave it a try. I wrote to finanzen.net. Curious to see if they will rewrite their article from January 22nd or write a new article (or ignore this take whatsoever).
https://preview.redd.it/pikx0giiei5d1.png?width=734&format=png&auto=webp&s=838478b4c766d88bc9d1b49a37adf60f0059b715
Erhöht man nun bei gleichbleibender Verzinsung die Kapitalreserven auf 4 Mrd. kommt man zu folgendem Ergebnis:
https://preview.redd.it/2wofwohjei5d1.png?width=733&format=png&auto=webp&s=e1baa820f6ec1b58ad1853fc769f72f37ab7f8a9
English:
Through the 45 million and now an additional 75 million newly issued shares, Gamestop has been able to increase its capital reserves from originally $1.1 billion to now $2 billion (45 million offering) and $4 billion (75 million offering).
Looking at last year's quarterly figures, the following conclusion can be drawn:
https://preview.redd.it/j50m6jlwei5d1.png?width=734&format=png&auto=webp&s=582bbffceed138756817be8aa343889b5ce55ddf
If we now increase the capital reserves to $4 billion with the same interest rate, the following result is obtained:
https://preview.redd.it/9xe042uuei5d1.png?width=733&format=png&auto=webp&s=e54305b89ca5822f8e4cf79333df5837151112e2
The resulting operating losses are thus fully offset by the interest on the $4 billion, so that the quarters can show a net income and the company remains profitable. Since the interest is valid for the full 3 months only from Q3 (the offering occurred in mid-Q2), I assume that Gamestop will be profitable from Q3 2024 and will continue to be so in the coming years, even if no acquisitions or the like are announced at the shareholder conference. Based on this assumption, it can be expected that GME will aim to be listed in the S&P 500 from Q3 2025 after 4 positive quarters (Q3 24, Q4 24, Q1 25, Q2 25).
The article you published on January 22, 2024 (https://www.finanzen.net/nachricht/aktien/strategie-wechsel-wird-gamestop-unter-der-fuehrung-von-ryan-cohen-zum-naechsten-berkshire-hathaway-13180517) thus gains enormous relevance and should be revised and republished with regard to the new cash reserves. On Reddit, Gamestop is already being referred to as "Gameshire Stopaway."

2024.06.09 09:28 inthearmsofdyl Dream Segments

I had a few weird segments of dreams today. In my first dream, I was in a room with people, a few classmates showed up before I left. A german guy took notice of me, enamored. I thought about how I must ethnically look to him, wondering why he found me attractive. He let me go, giving me permission to leave the building. I saw a spanish girl who was one of my old classmates, about to give her a makeover. She asked me to give her one. I was already eyeing the orchid lipstick next to her, wanting to try it. I wanted to use it on her, wondering about what color nail polish was here. After talking with the man, I gave him a embrace, feeling his bald head against my arm. He also had a black leather coat/jacket. I asked if he liked david cross, to which he responded eagerly, amused.
I then found myself in a room with pedophiles, with other young people there. I was unsure if I'd get to escape or not. I made friends with a blonde girl that was there. She didn't seem to like me that much. I was able to convince a fat guy who was one of the pedos, to leave. I grasped his attention, somehow being too attractive or not for him. I don't remember if he liked me or not. He let me go. I found out while talking to the girl that Ben Savage had raped her in the ass back in the '90s. He tweeted about it, owning up/admitting to it. It was surprising for an actor to do that. I took off, finding the corridor in the mall that I always see in my dreams. It leads to a hall that I take, where all the '90s stores are. In the lobby, I took my favorite hall, running through it. I tried to get as far away from the nightmarish environment I came from, yearning to be safe in this safe place. I've done this before in past dreams. The mall is usually where I go if I need somewhere safe to hide.
I couldn't believe that I was dreaming, it felt so real. I thought about how I spend too much time at the mall, like a millennial/xennial. How often I can go to the mall. I don't do this in real life, the mall is one of the only good things where I live. I ran some more, nearly lucid. I don't remember how I transitioned to the next segment.
Back home, I was leaning against the wall. There was a pipe at my side. I was probably pressed up against the metal armrest on my bed. I vaguely remember a bowl of water next to me in the dream, worried about my collection of food getting stolen. I had a couple boxes of little debbie cakes. The newest one was a vintage looking box of valentine cakes or cupcakes. I recognized it from online, seeing it on google before. Late '90s - y2k era. It had pink iced on the cakes. The sprinkles were red, white, and purple. Maybe pink too. My mom gave it to me. 'Those are rare. That's the one from the late '90s..' I told her. She nodded, agreeing with what I was saying. She knew that the boxes she saw and wanted to buy were harder to find, like the brownies and cordials. This has happened in real life, except the cakes weren't a vintage formula. My brother tried to take some, after I even covered the boxes with a sheet. The icing on some of the cakes were wrinkled imperfectly. Just then, a volleyball style net took over the room. I leaned against the piping, dodging what felt like a spider on my hand. Tarantula. The room was now just me and my brother. A group of guys included, that I did not know. I ended up killing it, smacking the spider to the ground. Before I even knew what creature it was. I felt it's thorax slightly, picturing it's bottom as white with red square specks on it. I aggressively beat it away like a volley ball, killing the spider. I was shamed for it. It turns out, it was an ancient spider. A young version of my man approached me, sympathetically. I wrapped my arms around him, gently. He mentioned a list of animes to me that he liked. I saw blue popup bubbles form in the air. I don't remember what all happened. We sat and talked, until he got up and ran back towards his friends. Almost immediately, a guy that looked like a fushion of my partner and ex/my abuser, came up to me. He had very light blonde hair and glasses, like a typical nerd in a '80s movie or sitcom. He was domineering, making this the most uncomfortable segment of the day. I saw one of my old classmates again that was in one of my last dreams, who loves michael jackson. '90s makeup was placed around, lipsticks. Vintage. I grabbed at one that was in a clear tube, reading the number on the bottom. It was probably silver. So a maybelline tube. Frosted and brown colored.
I looked into a vanity that was infront of me, a full and wooden one. I think it was wood. I was looking for some liquid lipstick, hearing the guy who seemed like my partner say the words 'liquid lipstick' to someone behind me. I picked up a green lipgloss, liquid and in a small thin tube. I already had a blue-green lip stain on, satin finish. I applied the green to my lips, ruining the lipstick that was on before. And it was barely covering my full lips. It was subtle. The green streaked over my natural lip line, looking liquidy. One of of the two pictures ontop of the wooden dresser, a few feet away, was a photo of madonna. It had the words, 'natural beauty' on it. Her red lipstick was also liquid and overdrawn, clownish. Both ads had women with the same forehead length. Martian looking. There was a miniature figurine on the floor, along with wrapping papers and plastic underneath it. I was wearing a futurism outfit, with footy boots. Barberella vibes, I was getting. I heard the guy explain that he was a feminist, trying to virtual signal to the other women in the room. He mentioned creating something to spread awareness on endometriosis. Which I actually have. I took notice of the tiny figurine, unaware that he was approaching me. I immediately flipped onto my back, seeing my boots change. From futuristic and footed, to clear and translucent boots. With laces on them. He tied my boots for me, which embarrassed me. We made eye contact as he tied my boots. I laid on my back, looking at the miniature figurine, unable to get any look at it at all because it got wrapped up. Right as I turned my head to look. Across from me was another girl. I was not able to react, placed in a plastic seal. I got zipped up inside it, looking at the girl in front of me. In her own plastic sealed case. A bed inside it. Brown and 1960s era. It was like we were dolls, ready to be shipped and packaged for the toy store. I woke up after this.

2024.06.09 03:54 WALawyer Help with German Craigslist

I have kind of an odd request for assistance. I live in the United States and have no ties to Germany. I have found an item for sale listed by a seller in Germany on a platform that I understand to basically be German Craigslist. The platform is https://www.kleinanzeigen.de/
This is an item that is extremely rare and not easily sourced. I have never seen it listed for sale anywhere else. I would like to contact the seller to inquire about purchasing it and having them ship it to me in the U.S. It's not an item that would be flagged by customs.
I cannot sign up for this Kleinanzeigen platform. It requires verification using an EU phone number. I have tried a variety of online/VOIP options and I cannot get past the SMS verification.
Would someone who has an account on this platform be wiling to contact the seller on my behalf, explain the situation, and ask them to email me directly? If so, please DM me and I will provide a link to the item in question as well as my email address.
Thank you!

2024.06.09 02:38 Old-Key-6272 Seen the light

I came across this subreddit from researching reactive dogs and I fell down the rabbit hole. For context, my reactive dog is not a pit bull and she's not aggressive and I have never had one issue with her attacking other dogs or people. She's just a highly sensitive nutty backyard bred German shepherd who was probably taken off her mom too soon. And she doesn't have a lot in common with what I see as severely reactive dogs. She's a nut, but she still retains "normal dog behavior". I've noticed that there is a very high number of reactive/aggressive dogs are pit bulls or pit mixes and it prompted me to further research. They all have the same profile. Needs to be the only dog, no cats, no small children, highly reactive, aggressive towards other dogs, resource guarding, food aggression. The list goes on.
I used to be a pit advocate. I was a "it's not the breed/dog it's the owner" person. I was that person who said there are no bad dogs and it's all how you raise them. I've never owned a legit pit, but I've been around them and I used to say, "Oh, I've never been around a nasty one! The meanest dog I ever encountered was a lab!" Well, I don't feel that way anymore.
I"ll start going backwards. I have four dogs. The aforementioned nutty shepherd, two papillons, and some kind of cattle dog mix - not sure what she really is - and she was left with me by my ex. She is the only dog from an animal shelter. The other three came from breeders. Yes, I get flack from that. The shepherd was given to me by a friend, but she still came from a breeder. I walk them a lot around my neighborhood. Twice I have been attacked by a pit bull. The first time, I walked my pack by a house with four pits in a yard, just throwing their usual tantrums, but they were contained so I thought nothing of it and kept walking. I crossed the busy street there and turned onto the walking trail and noticed my shepherd kept looking behind her and straining at her leash. I suddenly noticed this thing had climbed over the fence of its yard, ran across one of the town's busiest streets to chase us down the sidewalk and attack my cattle dog mix. My papillons started barking, My cattle dog mix put up a good fight and my shepherd joined in. If someone hadn't pulled over and helped pull that dog off my cattle dog, I don't know what would have happened. He grabbed the dog and threw it down the street and it ran home. We were unhurt. I shudder to think if it had gotten a hold of one of my little ones.
The second time I was walking just my little ones. I carry pepper spray. This pit bull came around the corner of the house it lives at - no fence, no people around - and started advancing towards us into the road. Stalking essentially. I know dog behavior. Head down, eyes black, it was stalking. By then I had had it, and I'm also on a Facebook page for papillons and had read enough horror stories about little ones getting attacked and torn apart. I pulled my pepper spray off my belt loop, pointed it right at the dog and said, "Come at me, bro!" The dog froze, I could see the wheels turning in its head, and then turned and went back to its house. I was furious. They need to either fence that thing in, or keep it inside. Again, I was lucky. I had had another run in with this dog before when I was walking just my shepherd on a leash. The dog was with its person - a tiny 20-something girl - no leash, no collar even. The girl said, "She's nice." I said, "That's great, but my dog is dog reactive so get it away from her." She wasn't happy with me. I didn't care. We have leash laws for a reason.
My neighbors had an Amstaff and an American Bulldog. I never had any trouble with those dogs, but I never cared for that Amstaff. She had shifty eyes, was twitchy, and I never trusted her. Their bulldog is fine, a complete derp. When the Amstaff died of an epileptic seizure (neurological issues on top of everything else) I am sorry to say I was relieved. She never did anything. Her owners were on top of her. But she always made me uneasy and I noticed my shepherd could not abide her. She would burst into barking explosions every time she saw her. She does that with dogs anyway but not at that intensity. She still doesn't care for the bulldog but I have noticed her stress level is way down. Maybe there is something to other dogs not trusting these fighting breeds.
About fifteen years ago when I was still in my "pit bulls are awesome dogs!" phase, I had a different German shepherd, a very well-behaved sweet dog I adopted from a Humane Society and I decided to get her a friend. I adopted this pit bull/blue heeler mix from the animal shelter in town. She was maybe thirty pounds and when I went to see her and bring my dog to meet her she was perfectly sweet and they got along great. I took her home and for a month everything was fine. One day she just unleashed on my shepherd and attacked her unprovoked and what was scary was how she just kept going back at her. I would grab her and pull her away and she just kept attacking. Given she was only thirty pounds, my shepherd, Tess, kicked her ass and the other dog came away with the most injuries but I remember had I not managed to pull her away just as she loosened her jaws a little in order to get a better grip on Tess' throat, I would have never gotten her off my dog. I regret to say I hung onto her for another year or so thinking I could help her. My shepherd just avoided her and me after that. The pit mix was always around me so Tess avoided both of us. I would walk them together and Tess would pretend she didn't exist. The dog would try to engage her in play and Tess would ignore her. Several times on a walk when I tried to redirect the dog from fixating on a squirrel or bird, she turned and nipped me on the calf. Not enough to break the skin or leave a bruise (and that might have been the heeler in her) but enough to make me think this dog does not respect anyone or anything. My final straw was when she attacked my little black cat unprovoked. He was that cat that got along with everything. He loved dogs and he and Tess were best friends. My friends brought their dogs over and he was cool with all of them. He greeted people at the door. He loved people. One day he was playing with this dog and she just bit him on the leg so hard he yowled like I'd never heard him before. She went back to the shelter the next day. At that point I thought I had Tess and my cat first and this dog was making their lives miserable. And attacking a friendly cat for no reason? I was afraid for him. I even recommended to the shelter that they put her down. She was unsuitable around other dogs or cats and probably not good with children. I don't know. I don't have any. Well, they didn't like my suggestion. I found out from a different neighbor - whose dog had also had a run in with this dog and cleaned her clock - that the dog had been adopted out again to a family who swore they would get no other animals. The shelter thought this was fine. I tried. I hope she never hurt anyone or anything. If she had been bigger she would have absolutely injured or even killed another dog and definitely a cat.
I got lucky. That's all I can say as far as my previous pets and the ones I have now. I used to be the "adopt don't shop" person but after going to the animal shelter countless times and only seeing pit mixes (and yes mislabeled as lab mixes) I gave up and started looking elsewhere for dogs. Every time I went to the shelter there would be scores of pit mixes throwing themselves at the kennel doors barking aggressively. I didn't want that in my house. I've always been a shepherd girl and I got lucky with Tess who I got from a shelter. My current shepherd came from a friend. I went to a breeder for my paps because I'm older and moving away from bigger dogs. But I have friends who still advocate for these dogs and adopt them because that's all that's available or they are still buying into the myth that they are sweet, misunderstood dogs. I have noticed in my town the popularity of pit type dogs has waned. Even compared to a few years ago when every other dog I saw was some kind of pit mix now I see mostly purebreds from breeders. People want a specific kind of dog, they don't want a project they have to revolve their entire life around. When I take my paps to the dog park all I see are spaniels and doodles and Bernese Mountain dogs (they are particularly popular in my area), Shih Tzus, and Goldens. I am absolutely not against mixed breeds - I have one - but when pit mixes are all that's available people don't want that. I know for a fact that I am a small woman without much strength. I can handle my shepherd, but she is obedience trained and desperate to please. I know I cannot handle a huge musclebound killing machine that once it is in the red zone, I will not be able to control no matter what kind of equipment I have on me to restrain it. I also don't want a creature that has "decided it needs to be the only animal" because that will greatly reduce my quality of life as I love to be surrounded by dogs and cats. My little pack exists harmoniously with each other and three cats. Never had any issues with any of them. They all get along. I have never worried about any of my dogs attacking my cats. The cats rule the roost. I don't worry about my big dogs hurting the little ones (though I am very careful and they are never left alone together when I'm not home, the little ones are crated) because my smallest pap, who is five pounds, is the queen bee of everyone. A pit bull would never respect that. My little pap would be dead by now if I had one in my house.
I know now that it is absolutely the breed. The innate aggression, the shiftiness, the unpredictable attacks that you can't even tell because they have been bred to hide any sign of when they are about to rip something apart. It is terrifying. My best friend has one. He said he can't have another dog while she's alive and he can't have anymore cats. He didn't really want her, his partner did, but he has her so he thinks he needs to do right by her and keep her. He'd rather have a Rottweiler or another Great Dane. I noticed even Cesar Millan has stopped using them as his ambassadors. He uses this little spaniel thing named Sophia and she's adorable. This breed needs to be phased out. I don't think there needs to be a massacre of them, but shelters need to stop wasting resources on these unadoptable animals and just euthanize them. When I worked at an animal shelter thirty years ago there was a strict policy that pits were not adopted out. But at that time there weren't that many that came through the doors. Now they seem to be everywhere in shelters. I feel bad for the animals. It's not their fault, they didn't ask to be bred this way. But it also doesn't matter. People and other dogs and cats are dying. Children are being torn apart. And I can't understand why people are still making excuses for these dogs. I particularly hate the argument that any dog at any time can do the same thing. Bullshit. My five pound papillon could never kill anyone. First of all she's too small and fragile. And second of all, her teeth are terrible and she has no jaw strength. That's just an idiotic argument from the pit community, and they shouldn't continue to be allowed to get away with it. No amount of cute costumes and cute nicknames and insisting that they just want to love and kiss people changes the fact that these animals are loaded weapons. I wouldn't keep a mountain lion or a bear in my house. I don't want one of these things either.

2024.06.09 01:29 Kioga101 The Ancient Weapons and Possible Real-life Equivalents

The Ancient Weapons. Supposedly weapons of mass destruction that led the front of the Void Century War, so powerful as to erase an island on a single use and raise the world's water levels by meters. We have over the years received small amounts of information on them, and as of 1117 I believe that we can make a pretty solid guess as to what they do (or can do), and as every piece of fiction is an abstraction of the real world and the author's thoughts, I found it interesting to try and relate the ancient weapons with real world weapons that have been planned and researched over the years... Plus a few bonuses because why not. I'm basically just compiling and resuming dozens of wikipedia articles so feel free to go there to know more.

The Ancient Weapons:

PLUTON

Even though Pluton was revealed first, we know surprisingly little about it compared to the other weapons. That said, we know it is some sort of super ship with considerable power, enough to be thought of as unbeatable by anything other than another Ancient Weapon (which is what led to the preservation of Pluton's blueprints until Franky burned them). This makes it easy to make an educated guess because we do already have something of the sort in the real world, something that Oda "surprisingly" hasn't really used in his story's naval combat. I'm talking about aircraft carriers and their general class of ship. The modern flagship of a modern fleet. Until now, we haven't seen anything beyond battleships in the story.
Fleet with four aircraft carriers.
Now, Aircraft Carriers. They don't translate very well to One Piece, after all they have not discovered planes and that technology -- Pluton could have a fleet of aircraft inside of it but in my opinion that's reaching -- yet. It doesn't need to go that far either.
The biggest publicized aircraft carriers, according to the Wikipedia, are about 320 meters in length or about 1050 something feet on average. The longest one ever being the latest USS Enterprise -- the first ever nuclear powered aircraft carrier inaugurated in 1958 -- which is now decommissioned and the biggest and still active ship being the USS Gerald R. Ford that replaced the Enterprise with its class of ships (the class is named after the lead ship). Through my research, aircraft carriers can be as small as 234,40 meters (769ft) but the aircraft carrier exclusive size, the one where only aircraft carriers have is about 300 meters long (~984 ft) and higher.
USS Gerald R. Ford.
These ships are known for the cream of the crop, and their ability to serve as a hangar for other ships, most commonly aircraft. But that's not all they have in store. general features of an aircraft carrier:
Possible considered upgrades to modern aircraft carriers (technology discovered or made efficient after the ships were built) include:
Besides that, there are also types of aircraft carriers like escort carriers, amphibious assault ships, anti-submarine warfare carriers and more that are specialized on other things.
USS Iwo Jima, an Amphibious Assault Ship type Aircraft Carrier.
What does this all mean?
This means that if Pluton is indeed inspired on an aircraft carrier, you can expect something with the qualities I described like carrying aircraft could be carrying other regular ships instead; the island of the ship could actually be an island; it could shoot missiles instead of cannonballs or lasers; it could have a robot crew operating it (like those in Enel's cover story) or a super autonomous klabautermann; it could have built-in detection systems for Sea Kings, ships and people; it could make Den Den Mushi useless like the EM wave stuff does to comms; be powered by the mother flame if nuclear power is analogous to it... These are things that you can expect coming from the weapon when it is fully unveiled.

POSEIDON

Poseidon is a living person, and she commands Sea Kings. It is the ancient weapon we probably know the most about. It is also the one that is a bit weird to translate to a real world weapon as Sea Kings and sea creatures, alive and stuff. We don't have a fleet of secret specially trained Dolphins or something irl... probably.
A classic panel, legendary even, showcasing the Sea Kings in their nest in the Calm Belt.
Still! There is a type of vehicle that is pretty much the king of sea warfare, and a type of soldier that works well with it. Poseidon can be a mixture of Nuclear Submarines, Shock Troopers, Frogmen and Commandos.
Nuclear submarine, and people on it!
Sea Kings are known to be very hard to detect underwater, and to be able to cause a lot of damage to a regular or unprepared ship. Sea Kings also grow in both size and intelligence with time, making these older Sea Kings powerful and smart chess pieces.
Nuclear submarines are made to be stealthy and to hold a lot of power with their torpedoes and missiles. They go undetected and strike critical hits on the enemy's fleet multiple times if possible. They can also allow for the infiltration into the enemy line, and advanced espionage. The fact they use nuclear power allows them to stay way more time deployed than a regular one that uses conventional fuel. Thankfully when it comes to features submarines like those are way simpler, not that they're not effective, they're very effective.
Another thing is that Nuclear Submarine CAN be armed with nuclear weapons. I don't know how that would translate to a Sea King.
Shock Troops are special troops made to lead an attack on the enemy. Hit first and hit hard, Commandos are special units that go behind the enemy line to do critical missions and Frogmen are combat swimmers that specialize in doing underwater combat, recon, tactical stuff.
a Frogman underwater.
They may even be able to influence ocean currents in some way, a virtue of their number and size. Poseidon is in a way simpler to interpret and understand than the other two, but it doesn't need it. Such a huge marine force can do a LOT in a world mostly made of islands.

URANUS

The newest one to be teased and the first one we got to see working! From high above it strikes dozens and dozens of strikes, each a beam of apparent red light that razes the target until all that remains is a huge hole in the sea. It is confirmed to lead to a rise in sea levels!
The Lulusia Kingdom never... existed.
The first thing that comes to mind to a visual reader is a Laser Weapon, in real life they aren't all that crazy but fiction is different. DragonFire is a new weapon that is being developed by the British and is said to be used in their Royal Navy by 2027, Laser Defense Systems like the Israeli Iron Beam also come to mind. No doubt military all over the world are researching the possibility of making a super laser pointer to stop anything electronic that comes nearby, sadly, the melting/ vaporizing beam or even Cyclops "Punch Force" beams are not realistic. Laser technology is being developed as we speak and systems that allow for a reasonable charging and firing of a beam is in our futures, only that they'll stop missiles and drones and stuff, probably blind a bird or a pilot maybe. It takes too long for a laser to heat up something for a combat application like the ones in our dreams, it'll remain a thing of the future for a while. Nothing of that spy movie satellite laser stuff (at least not with lasers).
DragonFire being tested.
The first thing that comes to mind to a contextual reader is the Thermonuclear Weapon, a Nuke, I don't need to explain about nukes, everyone knows what it can do and how it gets there and stuff. Nowadays a nation can launch one of those bombs in a missile from strategically placed military bases that have been planned for the best mutual destruction possible. You can always put one in a plane and drop it or in the previously mentioned Nuclear Submarine. They're way more powerful than those infamous nuclear bombs from WW2, they're Hydrogen Bombs now, optimized nuclear fission made to instigate a chain reaction with the most available particle in the surface of Earth. It basically gets the air itself to release energy.
Now comes the fun part to me, finding other weapons besides the most obvious that could've been integrated into the design of Uranus. I'll make a list:
an M777 type Howitzer
fictional image of what it could be. It's a proven concept but not practical irl at all.
how a FOBS works. it launches and evades the usual north facing radars.
That's pretty much it. From what we know, whatever it was based on, it needs to move to be over the target and needs Mother Flame to work. It looks like a laser and it completely erases an island to an incredible depth.

BONUS:

Shinokuni in action. You can look up Pompeii's \"statues\" yourself.

2024.06.09 01:06 LG_Offical Which Sabaton song fit's each member of VShojo the most?

Salutations, as the title states I'm going to name one song for every VShojo member that fits them the most, why am I doing this? To quote a fan of radio's "Why does anyone do anything, sheer absolute boredom." And since I'm a fan of both Sabaton and VShojo two polar opposite things, I decided to make this list. Without further ado. Enjoy.
Ironmouse - Hellfighters/The Unkillable Soldier.
Reason: I personally picked Hellfighters for two reasons, one the song is about the 369th Regiment a regiment of Puerto Rican and African-American forces. Two, because, well in the lore Ironmouse is Sayton, put two and two together. For the second choice of The Unkillable Soldier, well it fits due to both Adrian Carton De Wiart and Ironmouse's will to push forward in the most desperate of times.
Kson - Shiroyama
Reason: Shiroyama is one of the few Sabaton song's to be about Japan and the only Sabaton song about Japan not taking place during the Second World War. To quote the official Sabaton website about the song's story, "A turning point in Japanese history, the Battle of Shiroyama took place in 1877 and marked the end of Japan’s most famous warriors. The Satsuma Rebellion was the very last revolt of the Samurai against the imperial government of emperor Meiji."
Henya - Father
Reason: This one is probably going to be a controversial pick but I honestly couldn't think of anything better. Father is about Fritz Haber, a German/Prussian scientist who would create the Haber-Bosch process, an invention that lead to a significant boom in population due to the increase of agriculture. It should go without mention that Fritz Haber was also the one who helped Germany create lethal gas during World War 1, but with that aside. Both the 999IQ Genius Henya and Fritz Haber were both really smart people (or at least, Henya is, sometimes. Lol, love to the kettle.)
Kuro - Attack of the Dead Men
Reason: Like other songs on this list, most of them are based on the lore of members in VShojo since it's really hard to find songs directly linked to them. This case goes for Kuro as well. Attack of the Dead Men is based of the Siege of Osowiec Fortress and the events that would occur when the Germans gassed the Russian trench lines. On the early morning of the 6th of August, 1915. A cloud of poisonous gas crept of the Russian lines. As the Germans advanced through the gas, they could see figures stand back up. The Russians attacked the Germans and forced them back with pure anger and fury. Revenge for they're fallen comrades. It was the Attack of the Dead Men. In Kuro's lore, (from what I remember off the top of my head.) is about him basically coming back from the dead. Which fits with the song very well I'd think.
Apricot (Froot) - Metal Trilogy
Reason: Froot, being the metal head of VShojo was probably the easiest on the list to pick a song for. Metal Trilogy is a song which combines the three song's Sabaton have made as tribute to the metal genre. These three song's being in order of when they were released, Metal Machine, Metal Crüe, and Metal Ripper. I feel like it is blatantly obvious why I picked Metal Trilogy (especially since my indecisive ass would've been here for hours trying to pick which of the three songs would be better.)
ZZZZZZZZZZZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNNNNN - To Hell and Back
Reason: Texas, yep that's it, pack up your bags. Anyway, To Hell and Back is about the WW2 hero and Hollywood actor, Audie Murphy, a short man from Texas. Who, fun fact, potrayed himself in the move by the same name as the song, "To Hell and Back." Both Zen and Audie Murphy were/are badasses.
Projekt "Yoga Instructor" Melody - The Future of Warfare
Reason: This one mean's two things to me in my brain, spiritually when tying Mel to this song it could mean how she was the pioneer of lewdtubing. The second thing it could be is, hehe funny metal machines go BRRRRRRRRRRRR... you know come to think of it, Metal Machine could also work for this, reason? Why do you think the line, "Come suck my Metal Machine." exists?
Mississippi- Michigan- Minnesota- Michi - Carolus Rex
Reason: There is none, the only real reasoning I have is that Michi is the newest member of VShojo and that Carolus Rex was the new heir to the Swedish throne. Otherwise I got nothing else.
That's the current list folks. Now your probably asking yourself, "Wait a goddamn minute, that isn't every member of VShojo!?" And you're right. Mainly because I can not for the love of god think of a Sabaton song for Matara, Hime, Haruka, or Geega! If you got any suggestions, let me know in the comments. But that's it for me, I'm off to go be a Rhode Islander.

2024.06.08 23:25 relesabe Three Related Books to Discuss (Spoilers)

(Spoilers)
They are Flight of the Phoenix, Sufferings in Africa and Skeletons on the Zahara
A brief word about each:
  1. The first listed is by Elleston Trevor which I suspect almost everyone has seen one of the two movies made from it
  2. The second is by Riley who captained a ship wrecked off the west coast of Africa at the beginning of the 19th century
  3. Dean King used Riley's book and other sources to write in detail about the plight of Riley and his crew as well as about the area in general
All three books are about survival in the desert. I have always wondered how accurate Phoenix is in multiple respects. One question I had is whether anyone, given the very logical arguments against marching to try to reach an oasis, would attempt it. The other is whether under the incredibly challenges conditions in the desert whether a plane could be created from the wreckage. (The most surprising thing about this I won't reveal.)
I think the first movie that was made from it was a classic with great acting. (There is one credited actor left, Barrie Chase who is also the sole credited survivor from It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World although because there were so many extras, I suspect quite a few people, more than 60 years later, are still with us.)
The remake was not a very good movie imho and one big reason is that the engineer was a German and in 1963 ww2 was not only fairly fresh in the memory of audiences but presumably every passenger almost certainly had fought in that war although the German said, "I was not involved." Bottom line, this dynamic could not be recreated in the remake made 40 years later and the engineer character in the second movie I did not find very compelling.
The two books dealing with the 19th century shipwreck are amazing. I frankly found the 19th century writing a little challenging, but it turns out that Lincoln read the book as a young man and was influenced in his attitude towards slavery by it.
I think Dean King's book is much more accessible.
All three books deal with survival (and what people will do to survive) and all three books have a remarkable surprise/twist and even though FotF is fiction, real life provided a bigger surprise in Riley's story than the fictional one.
Very interested in discussing.

2024.06.08 21:57 FalseEpiphany 32 [M4F] Seattle/Washington/PNW - I was born too late to be a 19th century nobleman with a mysterious and tragic past, so I'm posting reddit personal ads instead.

I want to watch rain patter against the windows as we snuggle on the couch, warm and cozy together.
I want to whisper hopes, dreams, and secrets into the wee hours of the night.
I want to hold hands on long walks somewhere beautiful: a forest, a beach, a scenic neighborhood, take your pick.
I want to bake you treats and hear you say, "Oh my god, that's so good."
I want to decorate the tree together for Christmas and feel like there's magic in the air when we turn the lights off.
I want us to proudly introduce one another to our families (if you're on good terms with yours).
I want us to be each other's first thought when we wake up from a scary dream.
I want us to look at each other and feel like the luckiest people alive.

Who I am

I'm a 32-year-old Seattle man who values creativity, intelligence, and dedication. My personality can best be summed up as...
Some of my biggest interests include:
Physically, I'm 5'5", slender, Caucasian, brown-haired, brown-eyed, and have a short beard. I was once described by an acquaintance as "a handsome devil." Facetiously? Seriously? I choose to repost those words either way! Happy to share pictures upon request.

What I have to offer

In alphabetical order...

Who I seek

The biggest thing I look for in a partner is mutual respect. I prefer partners who...
I've also found fulfillment in relationships where the woman takes the lead. I'm happy to volunteer input and ideas, but I don't need to be the final decision-maker in the relationship (outside of areas we've agreed should be my call).
I'd love to see effort in your response. I've put effort into my ad. You don't need to match its word count (which is pretty darn long!). But something more substantive than, "Hi, I liked your ad!" is a marvelous way to kick things off between us.

In Closing

If life is a journey, people are destinations. Maybe we'll be one another's dream homes. Maybe we'll be a lovely place to stay for a few years. Maybe we'll be ships passing in the night. My long-term goal is marrying a life partner.
I'm also young enough that I don't need such to happen in my next relationship. If it does, awesome--but right now, I'm primarily interested in meeting interesting people and seeing where things go.
Feel free to shoot me a line if you're interested in the same!

Friendship?: I've gotten several (very sweet!) messages asking if I want to be platonic friends. Right now, my life is comfortably full between work, hobbies, and existing friendships. I'm saving my remaining time and effort--which will be a lot--for a relationship.
