2024.05.18 20:36 CoeusFreeze For better Rule 0 Conversations around unconventional decks, I've categorized Silver Border, Unfinity, Playtest, and Heroes of the Realm Cards by function.

I'm somebody who enjoys playing EDH with silver border and acorn cards and who has a number of decks which incorporate such cards, I've felt for quite a while that Rule 0 conversations around these cards could afford to be a lot better. There are plenty of people who would enjoy playing with cards like [[Vorthos, Steward of Myth]] but don't have a way to easily articulate that they don't also want effects like [[Deal Damage]] and [[Blacker Lotus]] being added to the game. Silver Border cards have typically been handled on an all-or-nothing basis, and I feel like providing some additional context on what cards do can help to make for better Rule 0 conversations and more opportunities for players to casually experiment with unconventional cards and decks.
As Unfinity has recently entered the public conversation following the recent Legacy/Vintage bans, I thought now would be a good time to organize MTG's unconventional sets (in this case entailing Silver Border, Unfinity, Playtest, and Heroes of the Realm cards) to clarify what makes each kind of card unique. The page I've created works to organize such cards based on the specific actions or additional features that they require, adding tags such as "Functional" (cards that work within the written rules but may not be balanced for constructed play), "Dexterity" (cards that require physical tasks), "Print Matters" (cards that check the text or art of another card), and "Extra Deck" (cards that require attractions or contraptions) among others.
As an example of this system, my typical pod rule is to allow cards with the Dice, Extra Deck, Functional, Name Matters, Near-Functional, Outside Reference, Print Matters, and Sticker tags and no other tags. If we are playing digitally, I also like to add in Unusual Zones.
This project is currently a work in progress, and in time I might add new categories based on other distinctions people might find useful. The primer details several areas of this project which I am currently working to resolve under the "To-Do List". If people have new ideas for tags or other suggestions to improve this project (such as separating "Gotcha" cards from other Articulation cards or separating Print Matters into "Art Matters" and "Text Boxes Matter"), I would love to hear them!

2024.05.18 20:31 One_Frosty_Mushroom Marty McConnell to Frida Kahlo

“Leaving is not enough. You must stay gone. Train your heart like a dog. Change the locks, even on the house he's never visited.
You lucky, lucky girl. You have an apartment just your size. A bathtub full of tea. A heart the size of Arizona—but not nearly so arid.
Don't wish away your cracked past, your crooked toes. Your problems are papier mache puppets you made or bought because the vendor at the market was so compelling you just had to have them.
You had to have him. And you did. And now you pull down the bridge between your houses, you make him call before he visits, you take a lover for granted, you take a lover who looks at you like maybe you are magic.
Make the first bottle you consume in this place a relic. Place it on whatever altar you fashion with a knife and five cranberries.
Don't lose too much weight. Stupid girls are always trying to disappear as revenge. And you are not stupid.
You loved a man with more hands than a parade of beggars, and here you stand. Heart like a four-poster bed. Heart like a canvas. Heart leaking something so strong they can smell it in the street.”
from “Frida Kahlo to Marty McConnell” by poet Marty McConnell
I came across this powerful poem and it deeply resonated with me. I wanted to share it here because I believe it encapsulates the journey many of us are on, navigating the complex dynamics of relationships with ex-partners who have BPD.
"Leaving is not enough. You must stay gone. Train your heart like a dog. Change the locks, even on the house he's never visited."
These lines are a clear reminder that stepping away from a damaging relationship is only the first step. The real challenge lies in staying away and protecting your heart from being pulled back into a cycle that might be harmful. It talks about creating a safe space, even if it means metaphorically changing the locks in your life.
"You lucky, lucky girl. You have an apartment just your size. A bathtub full of tea. A heart the size of Arizona—but not nearly so arid."
This passage celebrates the new life you've crafted for yourself. It's a testament to the strength and resilience you possess. Despite the vastness of the love you can give, it's crucial to ensure that this love is directed towards mending and enriching yourself.
"Don't wish away your cracked past, your crooked toes. Your problems are papier mache puppets you made or bought because the vendor at the market was so compelling you just had to have them."
This calls for acceptance of your past and imperfections. When people regret their choices, I like to say that no one wakes up and makes a list of ways they're going to fuck up their life. What became problems today were like impulsive purchases we made back then.
"You had to have him. And you did. And now you pull down the bridge between your houses, you make him call before he visits, you take a lover for granted, you take a lover who looks at you like maybe you are magic."
It acknowledges the irresistible pull we felt towards our pwBPD but advocates for setting and enforcing boundaries. It highlights how essential it is to be with someone who truly values you.
The poem concludes with a reminder to cherish your existence and not let grief or revenge overshadow your worth. It encourages us to transform our scars into symbols of resilience.
I hope these words bring some comfort and inspiration to everyone here ❤️

2024.05.18 20:29 Gorilladaddy69 Just Finished This Fantastic Show, & I Have a Question About Season 6…

I feel like the story was halfway done, and there are tons of random threads that didn’t connect to anything unless I’m mistaken: The storylines on the alien world seemed to go absolutely nowhere. That alien ship story, the story with that little girl resurrecting her brother with those protomolecule dogs and then running away with him when her parents freaked out, and then that’s the last thing we see.. As if they set up stories that were just completely abandoned without going anywhere and I’m wondering if there’s some special symbolic significance to these stories that I’m missing? Or if they’re planning on making another season some day, or if those particular storylines will be continued in an Expanse book and thats why things were set up but not resolved?
I don’t want to sound too negative here though. It was still the best show I’ve seen in a long time—tied with Babylon 5 and Deep Space Nine which for a nerd like me is the highest praise I could ever give a show haha. Bobbie, Amos, Avasarala, and many other unforgettable characters have become some of my favorite in fiction and I can’t wait to read the books for more!
One final question: What timeline do the books take place in? Is it before the events of the show, or before and during and after the events of the show??

How functional are RuneScape weapons? - Guthan's warspear

Intro

RuneScape was for me the catalyst to get into medieval weapons. After my return, I want to share my knowledge to the larger RuneScape community. So I've started this melee weapons review serie. One central question: how functional are RuneScape weapons? How would they perform if you made a replica, with real-life materials?

Weapon Review

Is there a more iconic RuneScape group of warriors than the Barrows brothers? I think not. Guthan's is mostly known for being a highly sustainable set. Sadly, the name "warspear" doesn't historically exist. It's just called spear.
Right of the bat, let's start with the blade. Talking of bats, doesn't it look a lot like the Batman logo? In terms of design, it isn't bad. It's actually pretty good. The blade isn't oversized - looking at you, Dharok! - and has some interesting features. The spear blade has a nice pointed tip, so it is supposed to be used as a thrusting weapon, like the game categorised it.
But, the curved edge does allow it to be used for cutting as well. Well, it could partially, as there is a rather obstructive spike that doesn't allow for any cuts to really cut through. Very annoying!
But anyway, the curvature doesn't hinder the tip at all, as it is still straight from the perspective of the shaft. Compare that to the retro look, where the point is off-centre and you'll need to correct your thrust to compensate. Yes, the new version is better than the old one!
Finally, the concave part of the blade is interesting. I don't think it is sufficient curved to really hook effectively with it, but even not, it only means it doesn't have a direct functionality. The spike in the middle is actually well-placed to be used for penetrative purposes, if it was longer.
There are two small upward facing wings at the base of the spear head. I don't think they are really functional, as they aren't wider than the base, so even if you overpenetrate, they won't actually pretend from penetrating further.
The shaft suffers from the same problem as the Zamorakian spear: it isn't smooth with all these obstructive rings, so you can't play with the reach of your spear. It's also still a fairly short spear, so it's also double handicapped that way.
Jagex really likes to have these weird spear butts with multiple spikes that serve no function.
May I also point out our character is wielding the spear wrong? The left hand touches the base of the spear head, pretty much nullifying any reach advantage it has. In a proper guard stance, you maximise your reach by holding as far back as possible, keeping your enemies at bay.

Verdict

This is a solid 7/10 for me. It isn't a bad weapon overall.

Design Suggestions

Remove the front-facing spike and elongate the back-facing spike, make two proper lugs at the base, lengthen and smoothen the shaft and make the spear butt either a blunt counterweight or a second butt spike.
Guthan's warspear - unsheathed - right side
Guthan's warspear - unsheathed - right-front side
Guthan's warspear - sheathed
Guthan's warspear - guard stance

2024.05.18 20:27 himeeusf I've stumbled my way into leading a monthly arts & crafts group of elementary/middle school aged kids. Advice on activities?

Hi All, Im not an art teacher - just an aunt with way too many art supplies and a ton of niblings. Some of these niblings are fosteadoptive kids, and my family is involved with an organization that meets monthly to provide training for foster parents. My friends & I come along and provide free babysitting at these meetings, and over time we've built a pretty good system of breaking out into different activity groups. I'm the arts & crafts lady, which I love!
The meetings are held in a church that lets us use the facility, and we are relegated to a fairly small room that we have to set up & break down every meeting, which lasts a couple hours. The kids with me are generally around 8-14 years old - mostly girls, but the boys have gotten more involved as I've been finding more coloring books that appeal to them.
We've pretty much just colored up to now, and I can tell the coloring books are getting a bit stale... but I'm struggling to find activities that will work for our space & time! Painting is too messy, we can't leave anything there to dry, and whatever supplies I bring are what we have to work with. I have a Cricut at home as well (still learning how it works lol), so I could potentially bring stuff they've worked on home to bring back some sort of finished project to the next meeting.
Does anyone have suggestions for activities that don't make a huge mess & can be transported immediately afterward? Diamond art & 3d colorable puzzles are about the only thing I've found so far that could work, would love to hear more ideas!

2024.05.18 20:16 sneaky_Panda3030 The Formation of Taekwondo

Hello taekwondo, while I am not currently a Taekwondo or a Tangsoodo practitioner, I am very passionate towards the mentioned styles and have been highly interested in them for a long time. Korean Karate styles' development and influence within the martial arts world are very unique, especially since its overall aesthetics and kicking techniques have had a lasting impact on the martial arts world and popular cultures of the West, Japan, and Hong Kong cinema.
Because of this, I wanted to dive in more deeply and analyze which influences contributed to the formation of Taekwondo.
Karate:
I will only brush up on the topic, since karate's influence on Taekwondo has become well-known among today's martial artists. (some may even say that TKD is a a form of Karate, or Korean Karate). That stated, it has become popular today to simply equate TKD to Shotokan karate, as Shotokan karate was the most popular style practiced by those among the founding Kwans.
While Shotokan was a prominent style among founding Kwans, however, it may be misleading or inaccurate to equate today's Shotokan to Taekwondo. From certain perspectives, TKD - including modern Kukkiwon Taekwondo - may have preserved the original flavors of the classical Shuri-te martial arts styles compared to modern Shotokan karate. This was further reflected in the overall flavor of early period Shotokan karate.
Although Shotokan karate is frequently cited as the "source" for Taekwondo, it is also not the only style of karate which had a profound impact. Shudokan karate, a school which influenced YMCA Kwonbup bu and Jidokwan, was a school which practiced its own flavor of Shorin-ryu karate, much like Shotokan.
The impact of Shudokan karate and Jidokwan is significant yet frequently neglected IMO, as the related organization Kanbukan韓武舘 (Korean Marital Hall**)** was involved in extensive experimentation of full-contact sparring involving many Korean martial artists. This is important as similar trends became a foundation for Taekwondo - in the context of martial applications and chestguard sparring.
Kicks (+Chinese martial arts):
Taekkyon is frequently cited as a source for the development of Korean kicks in Taekwondo. Given many of the Kwan's strong backgrounds in Shorin-ryu lineage karate styles, however, the full-contact sparring methodologies of Kanbukan韓武舘 was the main driver behind the development of "new" kicking techniques. Meanwhile, the other strong influence aside from martial applications and chestguard sparring was the technique exchange which happened among Taekwondo and Hapkido practitioners.
Iconic techniques within Hapkido and classical Taekwondo are the low spinning heel kick or the sweep kick, in addition to the spinning hook kick/wheel kick variants. These kicks have high resemblance to kicking techniques prominent throughout northern Chinese martial arts, albeit in different executions and flavors.
In the mid-20th century, the Chinese immigrants who came into South Korea were mostly from the Shandong province - the prominent martial artists having backgrounds in either Taiji Meihua Tanglang quan or an unidentified form of Shandong shaolin quan (likely strongly related to the Yanqing quan lineage, which is popular within Shandong and Hebei regions). The rich kicking methodologies of these traditions influenced Taekwondo even in its Kukkiwon form, albeit in distinct flavors of movement. (20:05 & 28:51)
Out of all the Kwans, YMCA Kwonbup bu is an outlier for having a strong flavor of Chinese martial arts. Its founder, Yoon Byung In尹炳仁, was skilled in a form of Chinese martial arts which he said to have learned from a Mongolian master. When looking at the taolus which compose the sets and the names of the mentioned taolus, it is a combination of various northern Chinese martial arts.
With one form having the name of "팔기권Eight-banner fist", there is a possibility that the Mongolian master was related to the Eight Banners of the Qing dynasty. While in Japan, Yoon exchanged his skills with Toyama Kanken, who also had training in Chinese martial arts in Taiwan.
Judo:
While having strong backgrounds in Shorin-ryu karate lineages on top of direct and indirect influences from Chinese martial arts, Kodokan Judo was also an important influence in Taekwondo - namely within Jidokwan and Yoonmookwan. While Shorin-ryu karate is a complete martial art, Japanese taijutsu methodologies had an undeniable impact on the development of Korean martial arts and some Japanese karate styles.
For instance, Seiko Fujita藤田西湖, the final heir to the now disconnected lineage of Koga-ryu Ninjutsu, was said to have taught elements of Nanban Satto-ryu Kenpo南蛮殺到流 to some Shito-ryu karate stylists during the early 20th century. Here is one of Kodokan Judo's self defense katas, having distinct methodologies and approach to combat from modern Judo. Kodokan Judo also likely became a source for some of Taekwondo's throwing techniques, such as flying scissors which occasionally show up during demonstrations.
Tracing Shorin ryu/Shuri-te's (+ Taekwondo's) Lineage:
While karate is frequently cited to have connections with White Crane, some researchers have cited that the various Luohan quan styles within Fuzhou have the most likelihood for being the direct sources for karate (when Okinawan diplomats would take trips to Fujian).
Here are two styles of Luohan quan popular in Fuzhou, Incense Shop boxing香店拳 and Yongfu Arhat boxing永福罗汉拳.
Yongfu Arhat boxing in particular was stated to have been the victor for the 1932 Leitai competition in Fujian, despite the dominance of northern styles in prior competitions.
Interestingly, southern Luohan quan styles contain many kicks which were thought to be first developed in Korean martial arts - at least when limited within the sphere of Okinawan-Japan-Korea. Ranging from back kicks, spinning wheel kicks, and even the low sweeping kick(at 3:55). The presence of these kicks are important, as they do not show up in the original Okinawan martial arts.
This may indicate that the martial arts transmission from Fuzhou was not in complete form, and techniques were further added back in by the Japanese and Koreans through experimentations in sparring, and from Japanese taijutsu methods and northern Chinese martial arts. From this perspective, Taekwondo and Korean karate styles offer a unique development of southern Luohan quan.
Miscellaneous:
Sikaran and Kuntao, both arts within Southeast Asia, are also said to have strong influences from Fujianese Chinese martial arts. Sikaran is quite interesting in that it contains kicks quite similar to Taekwondo, despite Sikaran and Korean karate styles having no prominent interaction in the mid 20th century. It is most probable that both came into existence via convergent evolution, and the fact that both were heavily influenced by southern Chinese martial arts. Here is a video video which showcases the kicking culture of Miao people, who are prominent throughout pockets within southern China and Southeast Asia.

2024.05.18 20:15 AnActualCriminal New Intel and Caligos (Kinda Buggo? Kinda just Ithacar?)

New Intel and Caligos (Kinda Buggo? Kinda just Ithacar?)
Hail. I come bearing updates on the buggo conflict, as well as Ithacar in general.

The Caligos Facility:

Ithacar has constructed a structure we've dubbed "The Caligos Facility." Essentially a maximum security mental hospital for special cases. We're utilizing old Pact methods of mana-diffusing tiles to neutralize magically adept inmates and hermetically sealed chambers where necessary. Staff includes on-site resident doctors, nurses, therapists, and alchemists, as well as contracted biomancers of moderate aptitude.
Security is being managed by one of the squads of automaton soldiers purchased from Raesteria to mitigate any kind of biological or hypnotic infection. Automaton guards are under the direct authority of the medical staff and equipped with chemical sedative rounds from Ithacar's alchemist guild in addition to their standard lethal payloads.
Current residents: High Pyroclast terrorist Bombshell Tallulah, Isravi's cat for some reason, a few dozen vigilante mechanical spiders, and of course, around thirty buggo-infected from a couple of different conflicts. If any of our allies capture more, please feel free to bring them or compare notes. All residents are being treated humanely. Top-notch psychiatric and medical care, above average food, free legal council, supervised visitation, and a rec room, library, and community garden for the lower security inmates (of which there are admittedly very few).
Current Findings: The venom buggo uses to brainwash his thralls makes no physical alterations to the brain. Any augmentations are being done manually at their hives. There is a much higher volume of the substance than expected in all test subjects. That means humanoid or insectoid. Living or dead. Finally, humanoid or mostly humanoid subjects that had a chance to return to the hive have had what we believe to be mechanical induction ports for syringes installed on their right arms.
All told this leads me to one likely conclusion: either the mind-control venom wears off in time, or needs to be updated regularly in some way. Other possibilities? The venom may serve a secondary purpose we are currently unaware of, or there is something else being injected we were somehow unable to detect, though I find these less likely. We invite more experienced or specialized biomancers to come and assist with further investigations.

After-Battle Report:

The Paladin Attack: Firstly, even under assault from anti-arthropod enchanted weaponry and high explosives, the main insect troops prove highly durable. They also seem to fight in a largely risk-averse manner, preferring to infect who they can and flee, claiming victory by attrition.
Secondly, Ith'Raal found that the hive appears to be severing connections and killing its own people if they are mentally probed in a direct fashion. No luck there.
https://www.reddit.com/wizardposting/s/tHHbwf14xa
Thirdly, the outer-Ithacar hamlet was completely obliterated by artillery fire. Some insects and infected were forced to flee over-land and were quickly detained. Many were killed. But examining the carnage we find it likely that more than half escaped through the tunnels they dug in from.
Given how infection quickly replenishes their numbers, I consider this skirmish a net win for Buggo. Especially considering they managed to abscond with several of Kardonk's mechanical spiders.
https://www.reddit.com/wizardposting/s/oda9jF54F2
The fact that they believe anything can be done with the spiders, and the recent attack in the Ithacar wilds gives by what we believe to be a mechanical foe, gives credence to the prevailing theory regarding intel extracted by the Mercenary Guild. That they have infected a powerful artificer who may be walking among us as we speak.
For the unaware, the Mercs were able to extract a string of words from a captured soldier before the hive mind cut the connection.
"Artillery, armed, freer, convert, loyal, infiltrator, artificer"
So far, we've looked into Ithacar's own Opifex Rerum Kardonk, Kartoffel, Thrak, and Shrax. The merc guild reports their in-house artificers are also vetted and confirmed clean.

Lower Caligos:

The following report is disclosed only to the highest ranking members of Ithacar's government. Queen Aurethios, Praetor Blake, Spymaster Argios, Opifex Rerum Kardonk, and Speaker of the Assembly Alexandrus. After it's dispersal, the report is disposed of in typical Ithacarian fashion. Meaning that it is burned.
The section of Ithacar's tunnels between the hospital and the Caligos Facility have been sealed off from the rest. Given their own set of wards, separate from the city. Hidden, even to the Academy. Too much of our R&D has been out in the open, and we are miles behind far too many of our enemies in the art of biomancy. Lower Caligos will correct this.
The secure vault that stores Ithacar's most dangerous artifacts has been reinforced. Interior automated guns, better curses, and local seismic sensors will prevent another robbery. The back door the spiders dug is now a second entrance as secure as the front, which leads directly into Lower Caligos.
https://www.reddit.com/wizardposting/s/BTSUWXB7wY
Artifacts like The Seed, Vulkan's obsidian staff, and Tallulah's arsenal can now be studied safely away from prying eyes by researchers and security sworn to geas oaths. In the gleaming white antiseptic halls of Lower Caligos, insects are disected, artifacts reverse-engineered, and beakers brew new solutions to the age-old problem of national security.

2024.05.18 20:12 David_Musk Web of Secrets [Progression Fantasy, 825]

Hi everyone,
I’ve been working on a rewrite of my progression fantasy series as I get ready for publication. For some quick background, this is a xianxia/cultivation-inspired story set in a Western-style world (sort of like Cradle.) But with modern technology, including cars, helicopters, the internet, etc. So more like Greenbone Saga or FFVII in that regard.
I have two options for the opening scene, and I was hoping to get some opinions on which one worked better. (Note: they’re the same except for the opening paragraphs before the MC gets off the train, so there’s no reason to read both all the way through.)
Web of Secrets Opening Option 1
Web of Secrets Opening Option 2
Option 2 was closer to the original draft. It’s simpler and gets straight into the scene. Option 1 was my attempt to make a more interesting hook/opening line, with a bit more narrative voice. But sometimes I worry that the new opening might be self-indulgent or info-dumpy, delaying the action for no reason.
Thoughts? Any other feedback is welcome as well!
Here's a short excerpt from option 1, so that I’m following all the rules:
True power was for Golds. That was the lie everyone told themselves. The Golds started it, of course; it didn’t take a genius to figure that out. They hoarded the secrets of mana arts for themselves, and they acted like it was some divine birthright.
Then, as usual, the Silvers were a bunch of sheep who played along. Maybe they actually believed the lie deep down in their hearts, or maybe they were just glad to have a seat at the big kids’ table.
Meanwhile, The Bronze outnumbered the other ranks four to one, but they still scavenged for crumbs on the floor. Most of them claimed they had no choice but to go along with it. Others chose to believe the lies, since it was easier than taking action.
Either way, Akari Zeller planned to prove them all wrong. Tonight, she would defy years of propaganda. Tonight, she would become the world’s first Bronze mana artist.

2024.05.18 20:12 Euphoric-Scratch7217 The Rawest Panel In The Entire Manga ( In My Opinion )

This might just be the most rawest and hard hitting panel in the entire manga for me. And it's not only because it's such an emotional moment and how brilliant the art and especially the art style ( The ragged way the text is written and just the sketchy feeling overall ) is but also because of who delivers that punchline.
Shiho has probably been the most pure - hearted and composed member out of the 5 who we haven't seen actually break down at any instance...On the other hand we are told again and again about how determined she is and how strong her willpower is. So to see her breakdown like this is such a gut punch because not only is it way too sudden ( The page before didn't warn of this at all ) but also because Shiho has been trying so hard to paint Yuuichi as a "good" guy or a guy seeking redemption...And yet when she realizes he's the reason her childhood is messed up ( Her parents fighting all the time and her getting kidnapped and the scar and stuff ) even she breaks down and confronts him. It's just such a humane and well written reaction and interaction... Honestly people don't really give credit to the way the character dynamics and interactions are set up especially within the five friends...Such an underrated aspect of the manga...
( Had to crop the image because Reddit wouldn't let me post it somehow...Stupid app 😐😐😐 )

2024.05.18 20:11 capacitorfluxing Weird Reaction: I feel like Half-Life Alyx showed off VR's limitations more than its possibilities

I just finished Half-Life Alyx, and I'll start on a positive note: that last level was such an imaginative use of the technology. Everything from ripping energy balls off the walls and hucking them at enemies, to the weird upside down world and strange gravity.... In standard gameplay on a screen, it would likely have been fairly underwhelming, but from a first person perspective, it was SO great.
My question: where the hell was this the rest of the game??
When I first put on the goggles and saw the Steam guy actually turn his head, the thrill was visceral. For the first few levels, it was a dream to be walking around the world I grew up on. Think I bought Half Life 2 the day it came out. Loved the object manipulation via gloves from afar. Thought the guns and ammo and reloading and all were perfectly done.
Had the weirdest feeling by about level 5. Like...this isn't much different from those shooters at the arcade, where you pick the red and blue gun, and follow a set path through the level and shoot random guys, and duck when you need to. Granted - it was in VR, so fully immersive.
But because it's VR, all of a sudden, the tropes that we take for granted in games like Half Life 2 - following a set path through each level - felt INSANELY restrictive and old-fashioned. Every door I went to that was locked, every boundary I couldn't go over because it was "too steep" - it just felt so artificial and silly, and took me out of the world.
And then, the game just becomes so rote: find a path through, kill some guys, continue finding a path through, connect the power, solve increasingly irritating locker puzzles to get a few goodies, kill some more guys, find the path, walk through a door. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. It basically felt like I was walking through a really beautifully art-designed tunnel with some enemies who jump out occasionally to attack you.
And then - that last level hit, and all of a sudden, the powers and weird geography and gravity - where the hell was this the rest of the game? This felt next level.
Ultimately, I enjoyed it overall, but thought it was really not the game-changer that it could have been in terms of pushing VR. Rather, it set the minimum - here's how a solid linear first person shooter should be in VR. But minimum? I dunno, I was expecting them to raise the bar significantly more.
Since I've been getting more and more into VR, it feels like the problem is that any restrictions feel so much more glaring than in standard desktop/console games, and the immersion is really broken. One way you could fix this in a game like Half-Life, which ultimately has to be linear, is to allow for multiple paths through, and a much wider variety of options to plow forward, from using brute strength, to searching for computer codes, to solving puzzles. Basically, make it feel like the real world: no one option or challenge to overcome, and make it that much more complex.
Caveat to say: if you have zero problem with a VR game being linear, then I imagine you love HLAlyx, and that's totally cool. As a linear, straight foward shooter, it's clearly the best out there.

2024.05.18 20:09 picto Blank screen after KDE login (Sharing my issue and solution)

I had been trying to get past an issue for what seemed like forever and I finally found what the problem was, so I wanted to share my experience in hopes that it might help other users.
The initial catalyst to this was my desktop environment completely freezing and becoming totally unresponsive (not even able to access another tty session). After rebooting, first the fedora loading screen starts acting strangely and refusing to start. This was pretty simple to get past just by removing rhgb from the kernel boot parameters and running fsck (which is what it was complaining about).
Once I was past this, a reboot got me to the graphical login screen. Only now, once I logged in, the screen went completely blank. I was however able to get to another session on tty4 so I could start looking around. What I kept seening via journalctl -xb -r was that there was an initial crash with xdg-desktop-portal followed by a crash with maliit-keyboard. After that almost being started for the session crashed or errored. This is what I would see first https://pastebin.com/iQV4N1sQ. Getting a backtrace via gdb got me this https://pastebin.com/05Qj1YEU.
I searched for reports of similar behavior but couldn't find anything. Next I started uninstalling or disabling things to get the system to a more "minimal" startup, but none of that worked. I realized then I had done all this in haste without first installing debugging symbols so gdb would actually be useful. After that, then the problem was staring me right in the face: https://pastebin.com/x8tD44Db
Specificaly this error message: "No GSettings schemas are installed on the system". That seemed odd to me because checking dnf list installed said I had gsettings-desktop-schemas already installed. I search around for this error message and find a few mentions of running glib-compile-schemas could help but more importantly, it is looking for schemas in $XDG_DATA_DIRS.
I glanced in my ~/.zshenv file and saw I had added this because I was trying to setup flatpak so I could install spotify (which I discovered didn't have an arm compatible build):
export XDG_DATA_DIRS=${XDG_DATA_DIRS}:/valib/flatpak/exports/share:${HOME}/.local/share/flatpak/exports/share
Here's what went wrong: I uninstalled flatpak, but still had this line in my ~/.zshenv file. When I checked what $XDG_DATA_DIRS was set to in my tty4 session, it was only those two directories. I commented out that line, rebooted, and boom working system again.
I checked the value in my terminal now that I was back in KDE and it showed what I would have expected to see: /usshare/kde-settings/kde-profile/default/share:/uslocal/share:/usshare
So, not sure exactly where those things collided with one another, but that's the issue I ran into and how I got past it and back to my working system. Hopefully it might help someone that finds themself in a similar predicament..

2024.05.18 20:09 TronHero143 Can anyone help me out?

Okay, so, I’m creating an AU about Omori. This is a project I have found myself really passionate in, and I want to do quite a bit with it. One of these things I want to do is create drawings for the characters…but I’ve realized I’m a terrible drawer. Well, technically I can draw okay, but not to level I want to be. So finding an outlet to make these drawings, has been tough.
So, I came to ask something from this community…can anyone make some things for me? It’s a big ask, I know, and I won’t be able to give anything of monetary value. I can credit you for illustrations and other things, but I can’t do anything more than that.
It doesn’t have to be anything great though, I just want you to be able to recreate and remodel characters in a similar art style to the one in the game. Create some set pieces, draw some creepy individuals, Maybe draw a dead child in a casket , just overall what I need to create the best thing that I can.
I understand that this is a big ask of anyone, and I would understand if no one wants to take up this offer. However, if anyone can give me suggestions on how I can create these drawings, (NOT AI ART, I’M NOT DOING THAT), that would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time, and have a lovely day,
TronHero

2024.05.18 20:07 otay007 Mr. Weller’s Clinic

Being a natural skeptic, this is a story I never thought I’d be telling. I grew up reading those short, half-edited horror stories that were so popular on the internet, scaring myself out of sleep too many times to count as a kid. These days, I’m still too scared to fall asleep, just like I was when I was 11 reading stories on boards I had no business browsing. This time, though, it isn’t typed words on my aging laptop that have my heart unable to beat calmly in my chest. It isn’t the long traded campfire story that has the hairs on my neck standing in unease.
It’s the envelope sitting on my desk, taunting me as I glance at it from across the room. The top torn open haphazardly, its contents situated neatly against the worn wood grain.
It’s the words that are typed so neatly along the page, bringing back every foul memory I can conjure.
“Thank you for donating.
Come back and see us again soon,
Mr. Weller.”
~
The sun hung lazily in the sky, casting a golden hue over the endless river of asphalt stretching out before me. This highway, flanked by gnarled mesquite trees and sporadic billboards advertising the next southern baptist church, had become somewhat of a familiar friend over the years. It was the unofficial gateway between my life at college and my small hometown nestled on the border of Texas and Louisiana.
I adjusted my review mirror, catching a glimpse of my own tired reflection. Summer break was finally here and I had high-tailed it from the campus as soon as my last final exam hit my professor’s desk. Gone was the grueling cycle of exams, papers, and endless nights spent hunched over textbooks. Whoever said that the college years were the best of their life needed to find the nearest sharp object to take a seat on.
As I drove, the familiar scenery slipping by in a soothing blur, my phone rang, jolting me from my thoughts. The screen flashed “Mom”, causing the involuntary roll of my eyes.
“Hey, Mom, I’m on the road. What’s up,” I spoke into the phone, trying to keep the exasperation out of my voice.
”Hi, sweetheart! How close are you to home?” Her voice was warm and overly sweet, exactly the tone she used when she was about to ask for an inconvenient favor.
“Probably a few hours out. Why?”
“Perfect! Listen, can you do me a favor and pick up a case of beer for your dad? He invited his friends over tonight and I don’t have time to run to the store with all the cooking-,” she explained quickly, probably sensing my sigh of annoyance before I could even take a breath.
”Mom,” I interrupted evenly, “you do realize there are, like, zero places to stop for miles, right? The last couple hours are practically deserted.”
“I know, but most gas stations always have the kind your dad likes. Just stop at the next one you see, okay?”
I groaned internally, glancing at my half full gas gauge. I had filled up the tank this morning specifically so I wouldn’t have to stop once on the drive.
“Fine, I’ll see what I can do.”
”You’re the best,” Mom sighed in relief, her tone calm again. “Drive safe, honey.”
With that, she hung up, leaving me to the rhythmic drone of the road and my dusty second hand CD’s once again.
I kept my eyes peeled for the next gas station, hoping to get the beer run out of the way sooner rather than later. About 20 minutes after Mom’s call, a rundown gas station came into view, its neon sky flickering erratically against the dusky sky. Like most gas stations in the middle-of-nowhere-south, it looked like it hadn’t seen a renovation since at least the 70’s.
Pulling in, I parked next to a rusted out pickup and stepped out, the heat and humidity immediately oppressive. The place reeked of old oil and dust, the air thick with the smell of mildew. I made my way inside, the crude “bell” over the door made of old fishing lures and soda caps jingling half-heartedly as I entered.
If I thought the outside of the joint was sad, the inside was plain pathetic. Dimly lit and cluttered with off brand snacks and outdated magazines, I wouldn’t be surprised if it hadn’t been stocked since at least the 70’s. I quickly located the cooler, grabbing a case of Keystone Light and headed to the counter. I tried not to breathe the air in too deeply, a little afraid of whatever strange diseases probably lingered.
The attendant behind the counter was a greasy, wiry man with sunken eyes and a gaunt face. He glanced up from his equally disheveled book, watching me approach with an intensity that made me uneasy. Placing the beer on the counter, I fished out my license, hoping to make this transaction as quick as possible. He eyed me while I pulled my wallet out, his voice reeking of prolonged cigarette and cheap whiskey.
“Headed to Texas?” he gruffed.
I nodded slowly, trying to piece together how he knew. I was still at least an hour and a half from the border. “Yeah, lucky guess.” I chuckled uneasily.
”Not lucky at all,” he drawled out, “Saw yer license plate.”
I turned towards the glass door, seeing the direct line to my car.
“Ah,” I responded, not quite sure what else to add as I put down my drivers license next to the case of beer.
Is this how social interactions at gas stations are supposed to go?
The greasy man picked up my license, his gaze lingering on it a bit too long as he rang the beer up without glancing at the register.
“You’re an organ donor,” he remarked, casual, as if it were something he asked every day.
Nope. Definitely not a normal interaction.
”Uh, yeah. Just in case, I guess.”
He handed back the license and I fought the urge to wipe whatever strange grime he accumulated on his hands off my card.
“Makes you a good person,” he nodded, offering me a rotted grin.
I forced a smile, increasingly eager to get the hell out of this place. “How much?”
”Fifteen seventy three.” He replied, his accent catching over the vowels.
I handed over two wrinkled 10s, wondering if I should tell him to keep the change so I wouldn’t have to handle anything else he touched. Before I could decide, the man spoke again, peering back at the door.
”Yer headed the wrong way if yer trynna get to Texas. Should take the next left up ahead.”
I frowned, unable to keep up my polite mask much longer. “The road’s straight the whole way,” I argued, “I’ve driven it a hundred times.”
The grimy mess of a man simply smiled, a thin, almost predatory smile.
“Only bein polite. Suit yerself”
I took my change and beer, muttering a quick thanks before bolting it out of there. The encounter left an uncomfortable feeling in my chest, and I couldn’t shake the feeling of those piercing eyes on my back as I walked to my car.
Last time I do a favor for mom, I thought dramatically.
Once inside the safety of my car, I locked the doors and started the engine, eager to put distance between myself and that disgusting gas station. The man’s words and shit-eating grin echoed in my mind, but I dismissed them. The road home was straight, I knew that much for certain.
As the miles ticked by, I found myself turning the music up louder and louder, trying to shake off the unease from the encounter. I tried focusing on the familiar landmarks and the lyrics of the songs I’d heard a thousand times. Thankfully, it only took a few songs for it to work.
The sun began to dip lower into the sky, casting long shadows that stretched across the road. I figured I was about an hour from home at this point, my mind itching to be home.
It took me longer than I’d like to admit to see that something was seemingly… wrong.
When I glanced to the side, expecting fields of unkempt brush and patches of cactus, instead I saw short, twisted trees. My eyebrows furrowed, trying to make sense of the misplaced flora. I let off the gas slightly, slowing down the car to take in the patches of damp, soggy earth peppering the fields. I looked behind me, my brain desperate to rationalize the sudden change of environment. I gripped the steering wheel tighter, a knot of anxiety forming in my stomach.
This wasn’t right. I had driven this route countless times and the scenery had never changed so drastically. How in the world had I driven myself into a bog?
The road, usually straightforward and predictable, now seemed to wind and twist as my car crept along it, each bend revealing more of the eerie, waterlogged terrain. Doubts crept in, swift and harsh. Had I missed a turn? Was that psycho right after all?
The feeling of unease grew stronger with each passing mile. The familiar landmarks were gone, replaced by dense foliage and the occasional decrepit and rotted building. I glanced at my phone, picking it up in hopes of checking my GPS, but my heart sank when I saw the “no service” icon in the corner.
Panic began to set in, a cold sweat breaking out on my forehead. I needed to find a way back to the main road, or at least to a road sign.
Just as the sense of dread threatened to overwhelm me, I spotted a building up ahead, its bright lights cutting through the encroaching darkness of dusk. Relief flooded through me. Whatever this place is, surely someone in there can tell me where I got turned around.
However, the sight before me only had my eyebrows furrowing deeper. A clean, well-lit, white building stood amidst the desolate landscape, almost cartoonishly out of place. It looked brand new, too pristine for its surroundings. Like a beacon of hope in a sea of… muck.
Desperation overrode my hesitancy of such a place, fueling my decision to pull over. I parked my car in the well-paved lot, comforted by the other vehicles sitting under the bright lights.
I made my way to the entrance, the glass doors sliding open smoothly as I approached. The stark white walls and sterile smell hit me immediately, a stark contrast to the humid smell of wood rot outside.
Is this some sort of clinic?
I paused as I looked around, my eyes landing on a front desk. A cheery looking woman with a bright smile sat behind it, her eyes already on me.
”Good evening! Are you here to donate?” she called out, her voice light and airy.
I turned back to the door for a moment, my instincts not quite thrilled being in such a strange place, but the idea of trying to get myself un- lost in the dark pushed me further towards the front desk.
”Uh, no. I’m actually lost,” I responded, giving the woman a weak smile. “I’m trying to get to Texas and I think I may have taken a wrong turn. Can you point me in the right direction?”
Her smile didn’t falter, but there was a flicker of something else in her eyes. Disappointment? Annoyance? It was hard to tell.
”Of course, sugar. But why don’t you take a seat first?”
I glanced around to what I now assumed was a waiting room. The occupants were an odd assortment of characters, each making me more uneasy than the last. An elderly man in disheveled clothes sat closest, muttering to himself while looking straight through me.
A few seats down sat a young woman with stringy hair, as if she had just gotten out of the shower. Her eyes looked red and puffy and I could only assume she either was terribly allergic to bogs, or she had been crying for a while.
Next, a man with a little girl sitting beside him caught my attention. The girl clutched a small stuffed bunny, her eyes regarding me curiously. She seemed to be the only person aware of my existence and I threw a small smile her way. Her eyes shifted immediately, darting nervously back to the man beside her. The man had no reaction, continuing to stare straight ahead with a vacant expression.
Lastly, a businessman sat in the corner, his wrinkled suit and messy hair contradicting his aloof demeanor. He held a phone to his ear, checking his watch intermittently. The whole scene of the room reeked of impatience and unease, making my skin crawl.
What the hell is this place?
I turned back to the front desk, forcing a smile. “Listen, ma’am. I’m really just looking for directions. I don’t need an appointment.”
The woman tilted her head slightly, her smile never wavering. “Mr. Weller can see you for a donation. It won’t take long.”
“I really don’t have time for that. I just need to get back on the road,” I insisted, the edge of desperation beginning to creep into my voice.
She ignored my plea, typing something into the computer. “Mr. Weller will be with you shortly. Please, take a seat.”
Frustration boiled over. I was about to argue further when I noticed the other patients had started to stare, their gazes heavy and expectant. The atmosphere in the room shifted to feel charged, almost oppressive.
Deciding I had seen quite enough, I muttered quickly. ”Thanks, but I’m going to pass,” and turned on my heel, making a beeline for the exit.
The nurse’s cheerful farewell followed me out, a stark contrast to the chill that had settled in my bones.
I hurried back to my car, the clinic’s lights painting long shadows across the parking lot. Sliding into the driver’s seat, I locked the doors and took a deep breath, trying to steady my racing heart. The “clinic” had rattled me more than I cared to admit.
As I started the engine and pulled back onto the road, the clinic quickly disappeared from view, swallowed by the hungry night. My mind raced, grappling with the bizarre turn of events. The woman at the front desk’s insistence, the strange people in the waiting room, and the clinic itself…
none of it made sense.
Determined to put this fever dream behind me and find my way home, I refocused on the road ahead, hoping that with a bit of luck, I could retrace my steps and escape this unsettling detour. The landscape grew darker, the swamp closing in around me, but I pressed on, clinging to the desperate hope that familiar sights were just around the next bend.
The feeling of unease clung to me like an unwanted second skin as I drove further on, minutes passing with no change. Eventually, at least an hour passed, the monotony of the road broken only by the occasional curve and the distant croaking of frogs. I had long since shut off my radio, seeing as no amount of Lynyrd Skynyrd could make the situation better.
My eyes strained against the darkness, searching for any road signs or landmarks.
Yet as time wore on, familiar trees passing by, an alarming realization began to settle in.
Despite making no turns. Despite the road seemingly taking me far away,
I was back where I started.
Bright lights pierced the gloom ahead, the parking lot coming into view mocking my attempt to leave. My heart sank, a cold wave of dread washing over me the closer I got.

2024.05.18 20:05 aitanannyraise AITA for offering my kids nanny more money/hours so she won't work for my SIL?

My husband and I have 3 kids (10mo f, 4m, 10f). We currently have a nanny, Isabelle (22f) 3 days a week.
I have to say, Isabelle is fucking amazing. She drives on field trips, she does homework with the kids, she handles play dates, she's the one adult my 10 year old likes, she's not dependent on screens, does art projects with the kids, she speaks 10 year old, and she's even teaching them how to cook and bake. They made mini quiches a few weeks ago.
My oldest is doing state testing right now and wanted a fun activity with her friends. Isabelle suggested a spa day and my daughter loved it. I set up a day for my 4 year old to go home with his grandparents and let Isabelle turn our living room into a spa. She picked up my daughter, my niece, and 2 friends, brought them to our house, and did their hair and nails while they laid back and did face masks.
I guess my niece was telling her mom how cool Isabelle is because my SIL texted Isabelle offering her a nanny position 4 days a week, matching whatever I pay her but for only 1 kid. Isabelle showed me the text and told me that she will have to think about it because the extra money would be nice. I told her if she promised to stay, next year I'd have her at 5 days a week with a $5 per hour raise. Isabelle turned my SIL down saying she had received a better offer and now she's telling my husband's family that I stole a nanny from her.
They're upset that I outbid my SIL and gave Isabelle extra money and hours just so my SIL wouldn't get her. My husband said it was petty. AITA for offering Isabelle a raise and more hours so she doesn't work for my SIL?

Refitting Parabolan wool items from Magiclysm mod
Basically what it says in title. I lost my last save with like 40+ hours of play, so I decided to just have a mass mod cheatfest. If I see it and want it, I get it. Balance be damned. Not to mention I added a bunch of mods not in the base game and I have only the slightest hesitation before cheating. I mention this to let you know I will gladly cheat if I can get fitted Parabolan gloves and gambison. I have bought unfitted ones from Forge Lord RipMeOff because they claim they can be refitted. I figured being magic cloth, the enchanted tailors kit would work, but the repair menu doesn't show any Parabolan items. I even cheated up all the base Parabolan parts (sheets, yarn, whatever) and in the process noticed only unfitted items can be wished for... Searching info on this problem leads my to the STILL broken official item viewer https://cdda-trunk.chezzo.com/ (anyone know why that hasn't worked for weeks, at least?). A soldering iron sounds stupid, what else is there for repair except heat based stuff (welders, torches, etc)?
EDIT: playing latest experimental.

At the end of June in the summer of 2000, Canadian rock royalty, The Guess Who, stopped Running Back Thru Canada smack dab in the middle of the nation, just long enough to unleash a massive sonic super storm on the band's hometown of Winnipeg.
Under a prairie sky ablaze with the setting sun, Winnipeg's favorite sons, The Guess Who, returned to the heart of their homeland for a concert that resonated with the pride and passion of a nation. Canwest Global Park, a baseball diamond transformed into a rock 'n' roll cathedral, became the epicenter of a musical pilgrimage for fans who had followed the band's journey from local heroes to international icons.
The air crackled with anticipation as the stadium lights illuminated the stage, revealing a backdrop steeped in history: vintage amps that had witnessed countless jam sessions, a drum kit weathered by years on the road, and an unmistakable sense of homecoming. The crowd, a sea of red and white, erupted in a chorus of cheers as the band emerged, their faces beaming with the joy of playing for their hometown faithful.
From the opening chords, it was clear that this was no ordinary concert. It was a communion between a band and its people, a celebration of shared memories and a testament to the enduring power of music to connect and inspire. Burton Cummings, his voice as strong and soulful as ever, poured his heart into every lyric, his every gesture a tribute to the city that had nurtured his talent.
Original guitarist Randy Bachman, a hometown hero in his own right, unleashed a torrent of electrifying riffs, his fingers dancing across the fretboard with the ease and confidence of a seasoned veteran. The rhythm section, a well-oiled machine, provided the driving beat that propelled the music forward, while the keyboards added a touch of psychedelic magic.
As the night unfolded, The Guess Who revisited their greatest hits, each song a cherished memory brought to life. The crowd sang along with every word, their voices blending in a harmonious chorus that echoed throughout the stadium. Cummings, visibly moved by the outpouring of affection, shared anecdotes and reflections on his lifelong love affair with Winnipeg, his words resonating with the deep sense of belonging that permeated the atmosphere.
The stage setup, while simple, was imbued with a sense of history and authenticity. The lighting, a kaleidoscope of colors and patterns, transformed the stage into a living canvas, enhancing the emotional impact of each song. The sound, crisp and powerful, ensured that every note reached every corner of the stadium, creating an immersive experience that transcended the physical space.
As the concert reached its crescendo, The Guess Who unleashed a barrage of their most beloved anthems, the crowd responding with an outpouring of unbridled enthusiasm.
