2024.05.21 17:11 NoGrassyTouchie Too old for Harry Potter?

I'm 22 turning 23 in two months. I read Harry Potter (translated in my language) for the first time 1 year ago and i loved it. I was planning on rereading the series in their original language but i was criticized by quite a few people in my environment over being too 'old' to be reading them and that i shouldn't be able to relate to the characters, This sort of criticism has been affecting me, to the point it started taking the enjoyment of reading them out of me. What's your opinion on this guys?

2024.05.21 17:10 Famas_1234 FFXIV soundtrack has many motifs/leitmotifs, but does that mean it's better, or is it becoming predictable? (data inside)

FFXIV soundtrack has many motifs/leitmotifs, but does that mean it's better, or is it becoming predictable? (data inside)
This is more to observation regarding FFXIV music I hear and I feel/think to post here
FFXIV soundtrack factually has many leitmotifs even the community have tracked all the leitmotifs in a website form. I'm a bit enthusiastic about video game soundtracks at the past, but FFXIV feels like a good place to take the data for it. However, as the content formula is going established, or for better or worse matured, I think there is a predictability in the content including the tracks because they are tied to each other. So I want to open this from the data then we talk about the tracks themselves.
Based on what I've gathered in the web, motifs are musical notes/movements/passages that are modular to use for contextual stuffs (characters/environments/moments), which further called leitmotifs. Say like a specific character coming in the stage, the notes are played similarly which makes the music memorable by using leitmotif technique. This is also frequently used in FFXIV too.
However, there must have something in the balance. Too reliant on motifs may sound boring. But no motifs may sound nothing or less memorable (unless they make you pump it out). With motifs and leitmotifs together, you can also predict the scene what will happen next. But you may argue not every moment must have motifs so that it can decrease predictability, or not everything must be reliant to it so that it may sound unique. I believe there is a technique for that. In the end, it's the composers'/arrangers' ability to create. They can use it, but it's about how they insert those. It can be subtle in plain sight, or blatantly in your face.
You may feel this kind of thing, and I feel that too. But because I am usually data driven, I would like to share the data, accompanied by how the game is designed. The game design is also crucial for the music itself.

The Data

To use the data. I use my sound tracker data whose the leitmotif tracker is based from the compendium. Here's the data I've collected so far
Album version. Imgur is blurry on mobile so you may refer to the sheet itself above. Too complicated? Alright then, I'll upload it here
FFXIV 1.0 is kinda minimal on motifs besides classic FF motifs
ARR motifs are increasing. Not to deny the major relaunch of the game
ARR 2.x is minimal in comes into reusability
Heavensward 3.0 was the first to establish the formula, hence high reusability
Then followed by 3.x which was the early template for future motifs
Stormblood 4.0 has high reusability based on the field themes, but still not as much as Heavensward. You can neglect other one-off FF themes (I blame collaborations)
Shadowbringers has high reusability, may on par or more then Heavensward. Ignore the 1s, they're bloated anyway
Shadowbringers patches are also good while maintaining the post patch status compared the launch patch
Endwalker is simplified but you can see the numbers are much higher. Maybe too much?
Too many 1s man. But also many motifs from previous versions are represented again

The Content and Implementation

For main expansion motifs, they can be separated into pieces. However, main expansion motifs usually being reordered to give variety, but still the same. This is the case for:
  1. Main theme: stores all the motifs <- the templates are here
  2. Field battle: some open world mobs
  3. Cities: most main theme motifs end up in here but in different flavors
  4. Field hub (aetherite)
  5. Dungeon midboss
  6. Dungeon boss
  7. Most cutscenes: usually for the expansions they can have 7 out of 10 tracks that shares the motifs inside the main theme
  8. Solo duties/story battles: usually tied to some parts of the main theme
  9. Occasionally some trials: usually for crucial trials there are some motifs in the main theme
  10. Occasionally some dungeons
  11. Occasionally some fields that is crucial enough to have main motif in main theme
With at least 11 categories related to main theme motifs, it is a fact that main theme is the most used within expansion. Let's say Heavensward motif. It has many and consistent motifs that can span to other contents outside what I mentioned in the list. Because expansions here are treated like a book or a movie serial, they need to use different motifs per season.
For field motif, especially at the expansions, usually used in 3 tracks:
  1. Field day
  2. Field night
  3. Dungeons: each field usually has a dungeon, so they rather use that field's motif to simplify the process
Each FFXIV expansions usually has 6 fields. This is actually many, just reuse the motifs then you're done. In fact field themes are foundational. It started from main field day theme, then getting a piano rendition in night theme, then make an intense version in dungeon theme.
That means, you can estimate for each expansion, you probably get at least 11 main categories + 6 fields * 3 = 29 tracks. It can be more if we count more cutscene music and other eventful music that uses motifs. It can be approximately 35 tracks with motifs, but that is in estimate.
Yes, I made the numbers above without reference, but let's go to the real data. Let's open Endwalker album as the example. Here's what I get. This writing is going too messy later
With 63 tracks, you can see some major numbers are at least proven compared to approximate
Notes:
  1. Main theme is expected. However, FFXIV usually has two main themes. In Endwalker's case, it's "Endwalker" and "Flow" as they are usually promoted in their YT channel. This main theme can be applied the category I mentioned before. Let's say 12 tracks
    1. Endwalker motif is used in most cutscenes
    2. Flow motif is also used in most cutscenes. Sometimes it also tandems with Endwalker motif
  2. Cities: 2 day, 2 night, 1 neutral. That uses "Flow" motif. That goes 5
  3. Story cutscene: of 11 tracks, there are 3 independent tracks. That goes 7
  4. Dungeon midboss and boss. That's 2
  5. Each field has dungeon. It's 6 fields*3+2 extra dungeons = 20
WIth this, you can get at least 12+5+7+2+20= 46 tracks with related motifs. It may be inaccurate, but you may get the picture
With Endwalker data above, I've counted that only 5/63 tracks (~8%) that are independent from the motifs.

Motifs/Leitmotifs are contextual, but how predictable in FFXIV?

Predictability here comes into sections:
  1. The events. May be a place, character, or some game elements
  2. How the music is made. May be the composition/arrangement itself
It may be predictable for main and field themes because how the game is structured. It could be better or worse. You may suggest like this:
  1. Make the field theme variative.
    1. The open field has two methods. Loop the track or play-silent-play the track. If the latter is used, it would be beneficial to have variant tracks. Take Genshin as the example. The open nature of that game allows to cycle the tracks. In fact, FFXIV ARR had this method especially in La Noscea, Thanalan, and Black Shroud. They have multiple movements in a track hence why the track is long. The question: should they revisit that method?
  2. Make the music longer or variate the melody
    1. If the gameplay is around the 2 minute meta, you don't realize that the music anecdotally follows that too. That is a single take without loop. You can variate by extend the music for a bit or maybe at least rearrange them.
    2. The concrete example I got is Monster Hunter music. That game has many renditions of monster themes while keeping the same melody. They have variations across the melody too
But there is a shock factor which makes it unexpected
Shock factor here means you don't expect one/some of the motifs are applied in the scene you are currently in. For example, who would think The Twinning music is a combination of Crystal Tower and Omega motif? Who would also think Anamnesis Anyder uses long buried Sastasha motif? How about mash all the old motifs in your face like how they made "Embers" which includes all tracks related to Lahabrea? How do you expect "Dynamis" comes back to "Flow" motif? This factor makes one of the most memorable musical experience in FFXIV.

Bonus: I already know who made this track

Related posts:
  1. How to spot FFXIV composer
  2. A Thread of Interviews and Showcases Related to CBU3 music team (FFXIV and FFXVI)
I just leave those here because this topic may be related to them and how the music workflow goes. In the end, you can predict who composes/arranges the music based on the style/implementation

Closing

And so that's it. What do you think about current formula of FFXIV music? Has it become better or worse?
I have ongoing survey about FFXIV music. You can pick before a week before Dawntrail!

My other posts
I gonna edit this later. I know the writing is getting messier

2024.05.21 16:48 LakeBlively93 Bitlife supernatural update(devs suggestions)

With all these new items coming out, i was thinking about a resuscitating stone in a Harry Potter style, so you can bring back the dead characters from your cemetery, for some extra random years, but with a complication to make it more interesting, which is, you need the soul of the character you are bringing back, which sometimes you find when you buy a haunted house, so basically you can bring back a chracter to life from your haunted house, but there is a more interesting twist, some times the house is haunted by demons and other creatures, so you can give them life too, them being potentially immortal, but you can also interact with them, ноокіng up with them, having children with them and also marry them, if you are in a good relationship with them, if not they will be in your profile in a similar way of an Enemy, and from time to time they will try to кіІІ you, but you can also attempt to кіІІ them, you can have babies with them and the babies will have powers, so when you switch to them you will also have special powers and an extremely long life. It would be freaking amazing to update the game with supernatural elements based on the two tv shows supernatural вівІеs, in particular The Halliwell sisters Charmed, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

2024.05.21 16:29 London_Tipton The new item Lunaria is terrible

I realize Wellspring was a large portion of enchanter powerbudget. It was an insane item that granted immense healing over time in AOE but Lunaria is terribly lacking. 30% damage done POST MITIGATION as bonus healing is abysmal. This item does not have a stage in the game when it feels impactful.
In early game where you should be allowed to poke and throw autos your poke grants single digit numbers of bonus healing. You can't even stack it up to half of its power because the damage conversion is that bad. However, in later stages of the game you can't reliably auto enemies to generate stacks as immobile squishy characters and one ability does not grants sufficient stacks.
Enchanters don't have strong enough poke spells or enough of them to generate sensical stack numbers.
In league of legends there used to be exactly the same item named Athene's Unholy Grail which probably served as an inspiration for Lunaria, but the damage conversion was 35% premitigation and it was not so difficult stacking it up with spells and autos. But with Lunaria it's unrealistic you ever stack it fully when your builds revolve around low magic power numbers and heal/hield power.
The item also has 0 visual effects. Which is saddening to say the least. Not even a text number of how much bonus healing you did but maybe 13-46 healing isn't worth visual cues.
The item is just not powerful enough to warrant buying. It's high risk low reward.

2024.05.21 16:25 renjya Am I being too aspirational? Advice from other henry’s

Currently have abit of an existential dilemma, around what I should do and would love to check my thinking with some other HENRYS. Job wise of late I feel like I am not being challenged enough and that what I am doing is no longer intellectually interesting. Am I just being a child in this matter and unrealistic?
My work situation is pretty great. 100% work from home with maybe 1-2 times every 2 months client travel for 2-3 days. Great WLB I would say I work between 20-50hrs a week (mostly on the lower side). Great boss who is senior in firm and basically gives me everything he can. Salary base around £270k with TC around £400k-450k including bonus ( have revived max payout for 5+ years so no signs of that changing).
The day to day work I find easy as have been doing it for a while but mostly boring. I work in enterprise technology consulting so a lot of working with clients on the business side which is highly political, they are not that savvy and a lot of the work is trying to explain to them how things work in basic terms and advising on best practices ( and selling obviously). The people are a mixed bag a lot of very toxic folks / environments as with a lot of large companies, but most I am advising are decent towards me as I am helping them with their objectives. Most of my day is PowerPoint, email, meetings… the only parts of my day I really enjoy is the +1 topics where I get to get hands on with product management, tech vision and in some instances writing code/ playing with technologies…
From a TC prospective at current firm kinda at the limit unless I want to get into hardcore sales, owning a p&l and travelling a tun. All of which I don’t want…
My options I see as:
1 - The easiest path forward is to do nothing, will continue atleast for next 10 yrs to earn this TC, though from a interest level the least interesting ( though I can potentially do some small side projects).
2 - Move into a new field at company ( trending tech i.e ai) though new boss new network that could turn out to be a nightmare, same for WLB… though would be interesting and give some new career options (though might not transfer into much of a TC difference).
3 - look to jump into a late stage scale up / FAANG with much higher risk/reward but would be way more interesting career wise….though WLB could be again a nightmare.
4 - setup one consulting business, high risk/ reward. Initially higher WLB and potentially no income. I have done this before successfully and due to my profile not crazy risky..
Current situation is: - 1.3m house with 500k loan left - 500-600k in shares, isa, savings. - 200k pension
Am I crazy to keep coasting in option 1 even though career wise there’s not much growth / intellectually fairly boring…

2024.05.21 16:19 FechaSTF22 Streak 8: Book vs Adaptation

I've recently started reading books that I have enjoyed the adaptation of, such as Dune, Batman, and Harry Potter. The main difference between the two is the exploration of psychology and the details. Some things the adaptation manages to make more explicit by being more visual, but when it comes to the characters' psychology, metaphors, feelings, and analogies it's challenging for a movie or series to adapt. But, as a rule, they are different works and we shouldn't expect the same thing, and often very loyal adaptations are horrendous, as is the case with Dinsey's Percy Jackson. In short, the book and the films are different works and explore different aspects, the adaptation of Dune manages to explore the visuals much better than the book, but the book, as well as being more detailed, explores feelings, thoughts, and emotions much better.

I just finished reading Harry Potter and the Boiling Isles which is currently unfinished and I'm dying for more
Any Harry Potter and The Owl House crossover fics to recommend? I prefer having Harry the main character. (Bonus points if he is some sort of half-witch and/or can do witch magic)

2024.05.21 16:05 popegonzo I bet Kaladin could kick Harry Potter's ass

If Harry Potter somehow showed up on Roshar, I think we can all agree that the magic from his universe wouldn't transfer over (because I don't want it to). When the HP series ended, he was an adult, so we wouldn't have any concerns about Kaladin beating up a kid (but I bet we could figure out a way for Kaladin to beat up Kid Harry Potter if we did enough mental calisthenics).
So Harry shows up, Kaladin sees a weird short dude in weird clothes, recognizes him as a threat, and kicks his ass.

2024.05.21 16:00 Quick-username96 28 [M4F] #Longbeach British Invasion: Do Americans really do it better....

Hey I'm Peter, a 28-year-old British bloke hailing from a town just outside London, currently in LB for work. I've always had a blast meeting up with folks from Reddit, so I thought, why not give it another whirl?
About Me:
I'm your typical 5ft 11 bloke with blue eyes, brown hair, and a beard that’s neatly trimmed - well, almost as well-groomed as the Queen's corgis. I'm passionate about traveling, particularly the excitement of planning new adventures. Right now, I'm meticulously organizing my upcoming trip next month. Additionally, I'm a fervent football (soccer) enthusiast and an avid reader, gravitating towards non-fiction, although I must admit, I do harbor a considerable soft spot for the enchanting world of Harry Potter! Who doesn't love abit of magic!
I'm ddf and ready to host.. My previous encounters through Reddit have been quite fulfilling, and I'm eager to embark on another delightful experience. While I'm open-minded and adventurous when it comes to exploring kinks, I do have some firm boundaries, which we can discuss further if you're intrigued (:
About You:
As mentioned, I'm more than happy to meet up beforehand to ensure mutual comfort and chemistry. If you're free over the next few days and the prospect of this piques your interest, don't hesitate to drop me a message (:

2024.05.21 15:37 Asyrule Where should we go in the UK area?

As the title states, I'm going 5 days early to London in august on a 12 day cruise. This cruise is hitting all of the major ports around France, Ireland, Scotland, and wales. I'd know, unlike the US, that flight around that area is normally pretty cheap, and only 1-2 hours away. Are there any other countries you guys would recommend? Norway, Iceland, Sweden, so on and so forth....Or should I rent a vehicle and just travel around the country side, hitting cities all over. Me and my wife like most things, night life, FOOD, drinking, castles, nature, etc....I'm thinking hard about it because we wont be able to experience a lot of "night life" events while on the cruise ship as the cruise ship will call us back from every port we visit around 6-8pm. I know we will want to see Stonehenge, as well as go to Warhammer world. We are also big fans of Harry Potter. We are both in our mid 30's. Thanks friends!

2024.05.21 15:31 ganapatya A book where people are strategic or running a government

This is hard for me to put into words, but I'm going to do my best and hope that someone knows what I'm talking about.
I'm looking for recommendations of books where the main characters have to be careful and strategic, particularly in the running of a government. I want to see a big chunk of the plot revolve around intrigue, trying to satisfy various factions with conflicting interests, understanding and solving the problems created by previous regimes, that kind of thing. I'd love something that deals with issues like this with quite a large scope, like trying to run an entire country or planet. Even something about war could fit if most of the narrative is from the point of view of generals and heads of state trying to understand the whole war, rather than the heroism of individual soldiers from the viewpoint of specific battles.
I'm thinking, for example, of Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy, where a lot of the plot and conflict arise from the main characters doing their best to put together a working government after the events of Return of the Jedi, I'm also thinking of S1gn1f1cant D1g1t5, a Harry Potter fanfic where the characters are trying to build a new world order and there's a lot of talk about taxes and regulations. I like the way A Song of Ice and Fire gets into this a lot as well, as well as the Malazan books (though more on the side or war than government, and not with as much depth as I would like, amazing as that series is).
As you can see from the examples, I suspect that science fiction and fantasy will be my best bet for something like this. However, I would also be very interested in historical fiction with this kind of approach. I'm still not sure if I've communicated what I'm talking about here, so if someone else has a better way of expressing what I'm talking about then I'm all ears.
Thanks, everyone!

2024.05.21 15:10 Sensitive-Pipe-427 The Cobra Kai dojo name should live on

It hasn’t been touched on much before, but I think Johnny should ultimately end up returning to the Cobra Kai name for his dojo. Eagle Fang is a misnomer for the same assertive style of teaching; it’s the same product albeit with different packaging.
However, this should only happen when Johnny is absolutely certain neither Kreese nor Silver can return to the picture. In a way, this end I am proposing is similar to an element of the ending of Harry Potter. The Slytherin name remains a house of Hogwarts because despite the house’s founder having some prejudicial ideologies, he was still instrumental in the school’s foundation and it wouldn’t have been created without him. On another note, Snape became head of the school under controversial circumstances but it was still a necessary step for Harry to finally vanquish the Dark Lord. The treachery Voldemort committed against Snape strikingly parallel to what happened between Silver and Kreese.
So in essence, Johnny would not Ben the bad-ass fighter and mentor he is without Kreese. So I think he should still pay that homage to his former sensei just as Snape was formally recognized as a former headmaster long after the Second Wizarding War ended.
Who else agrees?
PS. On a side note, Johnny won’t have to repaint the Dodge Challenger if he gets it back, and/or gifts it to Robby or Miguel.

2024.05.21 15:08 pfrass Does my grape vine have a disease/infestation?

Does my grape vine have a disease/infestation?
We have 2 grape vine/trees in our balcony potter. We have been having issues with them over the last few years as we lost our dad who typically looked after them.
In a hope to get them back to health, my mum did some heavy pruning. The older grape vine looks completely dead (to me) and hasn't had leaves or fruit in a year. My mum claims the vine had leaves last year.
The less mature tree has leaves and is actually in very early stages of sprouting fruit this year so seems positive. HOWEVER, this tree appears to have some kind of infestation. The tree is covered in white spots; these white spots are residue from a brown shell-like object/creature spanning 2mm to 6mm.
I examined the tree to try and find a brown spot as my mum had removed many of them. I managed to find a relatively large one wedged into a crevice. Photos attached. Photo number 2 is taken with flash so the brown spot looks shinier than it is. The weird thing about the spot is when you remove it, it explodes with some powder, explains the white spot left on the tree. Since the 'shell' I removed was relatively large, I was able to salvage it for examination - Picture 4 and 5. To me this definitely looks like a the shell of something but can't figure out what.
In the midst of all this I spotted a small bug crawling on the window close to the tree and eventually crawling onto the vine. The best way to describe it is a dark ladybug. The marks on its back looked orange-brown with it's overall size around 3mm long. This could be completely unrelated to the infestation but I somehow think this is the bug that attaches itself to the tree and leaves its shell behind? (Circled red in pic1)
My mum tells me that the other more mature grape tree had this exact same brown shell/white powder spot issue last year and now hasnt sprout any leaves. Which makes me think whatever the issue is killed the vine and so this one may now die too. Please help.
I've tried Google lensing the shell and it gives the name of a bug 'Trachymela' but nothing about it's tendency to infest trees. I also have no idea if the shell belongs to a bug or not. The leaves don't appear to be eaten or damaged in any way but my mum says the leaves are smaller than previous years.

2024.05.21 14:59 amonroe11 House System in US Schools

House System in US Schools
Good morning to you all, wherever you are! It's a lovely morning here in North Carolina. I wanted to give some extra information on the first topic of the episode about the house systems in schools. For context I am a fourth grade math teacher in a public school. There are actually many schools in the United States who have a house system similar to the one in Harry Potter. The idea behind having school-wide houses is to celebrate students for their efforts in school, foster school spirit, allow for relationship-building across grade levels, and to give students a sense of belonging in their school "family."
The school that is typically credited with starting this house movement is the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, Georgia, which was founded and began using this system in 2007. Since then their success as a school has inspired others to follow their approach. Ron Clark has actually developed a curriculum and implementation process for other schools to adopt if they wanted to use the system in their school. They also host professional development for teachers and administration staff to see their school in action. Check out their website here!
My school has implemented a house system this year (we call them "Coves" since our mascot is a pirate) and it has been a great success. We host meetings monthly with our coves to give lessons on good character, relationship building, conflict resolution, and other important life skills. Students can also earn cove points for stand-out behavior or other accomplishment and every quarter we host a pep rally to play games and reveal who wins the Cove Cup Trophy for that quarter.
Below is our crest with each of the cove names and animal symbols. Each of our cove names are written in a language representative of cultures of students in our school. Check out the caption to learn what each cove name means and what its origin is!
Amoroso: Hispanic origin, means loving. Jasiri: African origin, means courageous. Anbisye: Hatian origin, means ambitious. Waohola: Native American origin, means respect. Sisu: Finnish origin, means determination. Mamum: Asian/Pacific Islander origin, means trustworthy.

2024.05.21 14:59 BadHatHaroldCoin $BADHAT - Hide the pain Harold Jaws cameo memecoin (Solana)

Hey!
I'm excited to share with you a fun and nostalgic project I've been working on: $BADHAT on Solana, a memecoin inspired by the iconic "Hide the pain Harold" and his unforgettable cameo as the elderly swimmer in Jaws (also known as "Bad Hat Harry")!
For those who might not know, "Harold in Pain" became a beloved meme thanks to the stock photo series featuring an elderly man with a seemingly pained expression in various humorous contexts. But did you know this same actor made a brief but memorable appearance in the classic thriller Jaws?
He's the old swimmer who gets scolded by Chief Brody for wearing a goofy hat.
Here's why I think you'll love $BADHAT:
Nostalgic Appeal: It combines two beloved pieces of internet and cinematic history – the "Hide the pain Harold" meme and a classic scene from Jaws.
Community-Driven: This coin is all about bringing people together who appreciate nostalgia and internet culture. We've got a dedicated team ready to build a strong, fun, and supportive community.
Early adopters will benefit from exclusive airdrops and participation in themed events.
Memes and Marketing: We plan to harness the power of memes to fuel our marketing efforts. Expect a flood of creative content that celebrates both "Hide the pain Harold" and the eccentric charm of "Bad Hat Harry."
Future Plans: We’re looking into partnerships, NFTs, and even themed merchandise. Imagine owning a piece of meme history or sporting a “Bad Hat Harry” tee!
I actually got the idea for this coin from my sister’s boyfriend who is really into crypto and meme culture. A couple of weeks ago he sent me an image of Bad Hat Harry when he was randomly watching Jaws and he had just realised that it was the same guy from the "Hide the pain Harold" Crypto memes. That realization sparked the idea for $BADHAT.
We’re still in the early stages, but I wanted to share the idea with you all and get your feedback. What do you think about the concept? Any suggestions or ideas on how we can make $BADHAT even more engaging?
Currently we are trading on pump.funL
https://pump.fun/7HUVRS3XPqjH7EALH4ygNAmqoxBCphYVqh5HWyqUb7TH
We need to hit a $73,914 market cap before $BADHAT is released into Raydium pools. This milestone ensures we have a strong foundation and sufficient liquidity for smooth trading once we migrate from pump.lol to Raydium pools and liquidity burned.

Hello everyone, I am looking for a short term (with a possibility for long term) Roleplay partner for a scenario in either cyberpunk 2077, Harry Potter, or D&D.
I am relatively new to roleplaying so don’t worry about experience. I am however, looking for someone knowledgeable in these universes and who can write more than a few sentence per reply.
If you’re interested please DM with your description, and which universe you would like to play in, from there we can brainstorm ideas.
