2024.05.21 03:56 h2oooohno How to keep pandit on schedule during ceremony?

Context before I start: this is a multicultural wedding happening in the US!
Our pandit mutually agreed with us to a 40-45 minute long Hindu ceremony. We have other short elements to our wedding ceremony and want to stay within an houhour and 10 minutes. If we’re over by 5-10 minutes that’s totally fine, but where I worry is if we’re starting to approach 20-30+ minutes over time. We need to have time for everyone to change, flip the venue for the reception, etc.
Last week we talked with our pandit and laid out our ceremony schedule with each ritual we will include. He also suggested that we put English translations of some mantras into our printed program instead of him translating out loud to save time. So overall, it seems he’s very committed to staying on schedule.
However, I know that in the heat of the moment, some pandits get very passionate and want to continue talking. Our pandit is very heartfelt and got somewhat long-winded when we met with him. He does lots of different events and speaking engagements, both Hindu and multicultural, so I have faith he will stay on schedule, but I still want to plan ahead.
Do you have any recommendations for a respectful way to make sure the pandit doesn’t go too far over time? I don’t want to interrupt or anything and of course I want to enjoy my own ceremony and be in the moment. Maybe there’s something we can establish with him ahead of time, like a signal or moments in the program to do a time check? My mom will be under the mandap and she has been talking to our pandit too; maybe I could designate her to communicate with him during the ceremony and keep track of the time?
Thanks in advance for suggestions!

2024.05.21 01:26 artichoke424 Where to buy a saree in Montreal

I will be a guest at a Hindu wedding and everyone is encouraged to dress in Eastern formal attire. Any tips on where I might shop in Montreal? Thank you in advance.

2024.05.20 22:05 Lelouch_Zero_Requiem Confused and on the verge of heartbreak (19M and 18F)

Ok so the situation is kind of complicated , I (19M) kind of like this girl(18F) , I first met her on Reddit, which is why I'm using a throwaway account. Initially, I flirted with her as a joke, but somehow, I ended up getting attached. Now, I can't get her out of my mind. Although I've told her that I love her, she just thinks I'm joking and brushes it off. I constantly check my phone for her notifications, and when there’s nothing from her, I feel awful.
She mentioned that in her community (she’s Marwari, and I’m Bengali), people typically get married between the ages of 23-25. Hearing that was a reality check for me. It made me realize that she was never, and will never be, mine. It felt like I lost something incredibly precious, and now I can't shake off this feeling of emptiness.
For some context, Bengali and Marwari are subsets of Hindu culture, with significant cultural differences due to ancestral origins. This situation makes me wonder if things would be different if I were Marwari. I can't help but think that being Bengali is a barrier, and it’s tearing me apart knowing that, no matter what, she'll never be mine.
Reflecting on time passing quickly, it’s hard to believe that three years ago I was in 11th grade, and now I'm in my second year of college. In another 3-4 years, she’ll likely get married, maybe even invite me to her wedding. The thought of her with someone else, like a guy named Dinesh, breaks my heart. Knowing that even if we date because of the cultural difference its near impossible for us to end up together
I'm torn on whether to confess my feelings. Even though I suspect she might have a small interest in me, I fear rejection and losing what we currently have. i dont want to lose her and Going no contact feels unbearable, and each text from her makes my heart sink deeper.
What should I do?

2024.05.20 19:36 anthonyd5189 New to mirrorless, looking for advice; Z f, Z 7ii, wait for the next thing?

I'll preface this with the statement that I'm a complete hobbyist, I just take photos for fun and post them on social medias for friends/family/strangers to see.
I haven't been in the game for years as life happened; work, wedding, house buying, etc all took up my time.
I currently have a D7000 that I've had since 2010 when they first came out. I have a handful of lenses for it, hence why I'm looking at the Z cameras in hopes to still be able to utilize most of my current equipment...although I'm not exactly too sure on the compatibility of DX lenses on a full frame Z body with the FTZ II adapter.
So here is the question. Looking at reviews online and Youtube videos, the Z f seems to be a pretty solid camera (I like the looks and manual controls, that stuff is fun for me). The Z 7ii looks like it might just have a "better" sensor (48MP vs 24MP), but right now its hugely discounted. And in doing some research it seems that the next logical release for Nikon would be the Z 6iii which could potentially be the Z f in a modern body with some other upgrades.
So, if you were someone who doesn't make money taking pictures and just does it for fun, what would you lean towards?
Thanks to anyone who chimes in.

2024.05.20 14:27 annoyedcousinthrow AITA for cutting off my cousin and her mom after they accused me indirectly of stealing at her wedding?

Hey Reddit,
I'm in a tough spot and could really use some outside perspective on this situation. So, my cousin Emma and I have never been particularly close, but we've always been civil. When she got engaged in December 2022, I sent her a thoughtful present, which she thanked me for repeatedly. Fast forward to February, and Emma invited me to her wedding in April 2024. Living abroad and starting a new job, I made it clear that I needed advance notice to attend, and thankfully, I managed to make it.
Emma asked me to be part of her wedding entry, and despite our not being very close, I agreed, hoping it would help us build a better relationship. However, just a week before the wedding, I found out she'd been talking negatively about me and my career as a project manager. It stung, but I didn't want to cause drama before her big day, so I kept quiet.
During the wedding weekend, I helped Emma get dressed for her Hindu ceremony, and her mom told me to leave the jewelry as she would handle it later. So, I only packed away the bangles. The entry went smoothly, and I attended the reception without any complaints. However, after the wedding, I chose not to leave a gift, intending to address the hurtful comments privately after the festivities.
Days later, Emma asked me about the missing jewelry, and I told her I hadn't touched it beyond what her mom instructed. Later that day, I saw Emma posting on Facebook about missing jewelry and implying that someone in the family might have taken it. I felt uneasy, especially since her mom and I were the only family members helping her get dressed.
Then things escalated when her sister made comments on the post saying, "we didn't like her anyway". Her mom reached out to me, asking about the bangles, which made me feel like they were singling me out. Even my grandmother called, further cementing that they may have discussed me as a suspect.
Finally, another cousin messaged me saying the jewelry was found boxed up in a car. But Emma refuses to retract her accusations online because she's embarrassed. Feeling betrayed, I chose to cut Emma and her mom out of my life. I deleted them from my socials and blocked their numbers.
Now, my grandma is upset, saying I was unfair for not explaining myself. So, Reddit, am I the jerk for cutting them off without explanation? Should I have handled the situation differently?
Thanks for your insights.

According to Smritikars, Marriage is all about a holy union of husband and wife who cannot break this relationship even after death.
Cheaters should be killed by law then
In India, for example, the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955 is based on the assumption that Hindu marriage is a sacrament, and as such, it is governed by religious and cultural norms, rather than legal ones. However, this approach has been criticized for perpetuating patriarchal norms and limiting the rights of women.
Registration of marriage makes no sense
Gandharva: With mutual consent and driven by their shared love and sexual urges, the bride and groom are united in this type of marriage. Without going through any religious rites or rituals, the bride and groom establish a physical union because they are so enamoured
Of the eight forms of hindu marriage this one only makes sense in modern india.
Many others speak of dowry and also payment to girls father.
Rakshasa: In this type of marriage, a girl is kidnapped forcibly and wedded to a man who wants to marry her, but her father won’t let it. When the bride’s guardians are attacked and either killed or wounded, the people by the groom’s side whisk the girl away while she wails, cries for aid, breaks open the door, or secures forced entry into the home. This union is still common among the Barrar and Betul of Gonda castes.
This should be legal then .. fuck
Paishach: This is the last form of marriage. Under this, a male seduces women and engages in sexual activity with them while the woman is either sleeping, intoxicated, or mentally unstable, typically at night. Because of the embarrassment of such behaviour, the girl’s parents must consent to the girl’s marriage to the man. The term “paishacha” refers to nighttime nocturnal goblins. It is comparable to an act of rape, which is the most heinous crime that can be committed today and is penalised under section 376 of the IPC. Rape offenders must serve a minimum of seven years in jail, with the possibility of a lifelong sentence and a fine.
Nothing to say
Then again
HINDU MARRIAGE HAS CONTRACTUAL NATURE The industrial revolution and its lofty ideals of liberty and equality led to the current understanding of marriage as a contract. The highest human and social relationship that man has ever experienced, i.e., marriage, must also be firmly grounded on the free volition of individuals if human and social interactions do not grow out of “status” and are instead based on that of individuals. As a result, marriage started to be regarded as contractual in nature.
Contrarily, the Hindu marriage has ceased to be an unbreakable and immortal connection. Widow weddings are permitted. Furthermore, it allowed divorce. Although a sacred ceremony is required, it is nevertheless possible to refer to the union as holy or sacred. As a result,
So by these words men and women can leave anytime.
Right to divorce
But why is the union still called holy or sacred?
according to the Vedas and Shastra, marriage is considered a sacred union. Now, the whole society has transformed and some elements of the contract were added to the marriage
Makes better sense
Hindu marriage law has provisions that imply that marriage is also a legal contract. When permission is significant for marriage, how does it resemble the contract? It reaches a sacrament since most weddings still require a sacred ceremony.
Dosent make sense. Then prenuptial agreements( prenups) should be legal to? Right?
Hence, Hindu Marriage is neither a pure contract nor a pure sacrament but a mixture of both contract and sacrament. In conclusion, this paper argues that Hindu marriage is a complex institution that contains both contractual and sacramental elements. A nuanced understanding of the nature of Hindu marriage is essential for developing appropriate legal and social structures that can protect the rights of all individuals involved. Further research is needed to explore the implications of these findings for policy and practice.
With increase of divorce and false cases of 498a, domestic violence, it is time prenups are made legal. Right??
Summary--
Bhagwati Saran Singh v. Parmeshwar Nandar Singh - court held hindu marriage is not only a sacrament but also a contract.
Although it is not a pure contract as there is no consideration. It sorta is a mix of both, a sacrament and a contract.
So why not legalize prenuptial agreements ( prenups)???

2024.05.19 17:58 Opening_Plankton_915 So we are not sure if we are doing a valid, legal marriage

My boyfriend is a Indian Hindu. I am an American citizen who doesn't have Indian ancestry and I am not Hindu, but agnostic but was raised Episcopalian.
We're looking forward to planning our Hindu wedding, but I have heard that in India a religious marriage, on its own, is a valid, legal marriage. What I am not sure is if I do the Hindu marriage ceremony and go to register the marriage here in India would that be a valid, legal marriage by Indian laws since I am not Hindu and am a foreigner.
So if it is not valid by Indian laws, it must not be valid by US immigration laws.
So what is the option around this?

2024.05.19 17:45 deverbovitae The Shepherd Who Gives Sight John 9:1-10:21

The “disciple whom Jesus loved,” known as John, either John the brother of Zebedee (the Apostle), or John the Elder, was writing his recollections of his experiences with Jesus so that those who hear or read would believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and would find eternal life in His name (cf. John 20:31). He began by speaking of the Word of God, the Creator, the life and light of men, who took on flesh and dwelt among us as Jesus of Nazareth (John 1:1-18). He then described the calling of the first disciples, Jesus’ first sign at the wedding in Cana, the events which took place while Jesus was present at the Passover in Jerusalem, and Jesus’ return to Galilee via Samaria (John 1:19-4:54). John the Evangelist then set forth Jesus’ healing of a lame man at Bethesda and the storm of controversy it engendered, Jesus’ feeding of the five thousand, and His challenging description of Himself as the Bread of Life (John 5:1-6:71).
John the Evangelist has been relating narratives regarding Jesus at the Feast of Tabernacles (or Feast of Booths; Sukkot) in Jerusalem, featuring Jesus’ instruction and the thoughts and feelings of the crowds and Jewish authorities, ultimately leading up to a desire to stone Jesus for blasphemy (John 7:1-52, 8:12-59). For many textual critical and literary reasons, we have reason to believe the pericope adulterae, the story of Jesus and the woman caught in adultery, of John 7:53-8:11 was not originally written by John, let alone would have taken place at this point in the Gospel narrative. We therefore conclude John the Evangelist wrote a continuous narrative of events at the Feast of Tabernacles in John 7:1-52 and John 8:12-10:21.
While we have a tendency to disconnect the narratives of John 9:1-41 and John 10:1-21 from the events of John 7:1-52, 8:12-59, and even disconnect them from each other, John the Evangelist presented them as all part of one continuous literary unit. In John’s narration, Jesus has gone back and forth with the Jewish people and religious authorities in John 7:1-52, 8:12-30 and then spoke specifically to the Jewish people who believed in Him in John 8:31-59; having miraculously escaped those who would have executed Him, Jesus left the Temple area with His disciples, and walked by a man who had been born blind (John 9:1). Jesus’ disciples asked who had sinned, he or his parents, which led to his blindness; Jesus responded it was so that the acts of God might be revealed through him (John 9:2-3). The disciples reflect the standard prejudice and presumption regarding disability deriving from specific sins; we should not develop a theology of disability from either Jesus’ disciples or, for that matter, Jesus’ specific response in this particular circumstance.
Jesus re-affirmed how He was the Light of the world and needed to do the works of God while the day remained (John 9:4-5; cf. John 8:12). He then spat on the ground, made mud, put it on the blind man’s eyes, and told him to wash in the pool of Siloam; the blind man did so and was able to see (John 9:6-7). The people responded, wondering if he indeed was the man who was blind and had formerly begged; some recognized him as such, but others did not think so; he did not shrink away from confessing who he was and had been (John 9:8-9). They asked him about what happened and he relayed the story (John 9:10-12).
The people decided to bring the man to stand before the Pharisees since an astonishing miracle had taken place (John 9:13). John the Evangelist then informed us this healing took place on a Sabbath (John 9:14); many of the Pharisees thus considered Jesus’ making mud on the ground as work and thus deemed Him a transgressor of God’s law, entirely missing the miraculous on account of this detail, but some did experience the cognitive dissonance and wondered how a sinner could do something like this (John 9:15-16). They asked the formerly blind man what he thought; he confessed Jesus as a prophet (John 9:17).
The Pharisees refused to believe his testimony and summoned his parents; they affirmed him as their son and that he was blind, but said nothing about how he gained sight (John 9:18-21). John the Evangelist explained their reticence: the Pharisees had agreed to put out of the synagogue anyone who confessed Jesus as the Christ (John 9:22-23). To be put out of the synagogue meant to be alienated and isolated from the Jewish community, and it would not be as if the Gentiles would welcome them with open arms. Many commentators believe John is retrojecting the situation of his later community onto this event; we have no reason to believe the religious authorities would not have thus leveraged their power at the time.
The Pharisees brought the formerly blind man back in and chastised him: they knew Jesus was a sinner, and he should glorify God; they were Moses’ disciples, but he was a disciple of Jesus, and they do not know where He came from (John 9:24-25, 29). The formerly blind man stood against them sharply: God did not listen to sinners, but Jesus had done a miracle which had never before been done according to the witness of the Scriptures. If Jesus were not from God He could do nothing (John 9:26, 30-33). The Pharisees had no patience for such a rebuke: they denounced him as born entirely in his sins, and yet he would presume to teach them (John 9:34)? We will have reason in a moment to comment on the irony of this statement; sufficient for the moment is to recognize how the Pharisees have revealed who they are in their response.
The Pharisees cast the man out. Jesus found him and asked what he thought of the Son of Man (John 9:35). The man asked Jesus about who the Son of Man might be, and Jesus confessed Himself as the Son of Man (John 9:36-37). The formerly blind man confessed his belief and prostrated before Jesus; Jesus said He came into the world so the blind might see and those who see might become blind (John 9:38-39). The Pharisees, perceiving the challenge, asked Him if they were blind; He told them they would not be guilty of sin if they were blind, but because they presumed to see, their sin remained (John 9:40-41).
John the Evangelist laid the irony on thickly: the blind saw, but those who believed they saw proved blind. Those who were “born in sin” found forgiveness, but those who presumed themselves to be holy were in transgression. Appropriate critiques about making caricatures and strawmen out of the Pharisees are important and should be heeded; nevertheless, it is always a temptation of those with religious zeal to think too highly of their own righteousness and inappropriately prove sanctimonious toward those with less formal accreditation or standing.
We tend to end the story there, but John did not: in his narrative, Jesus immediately continued on by speaking of Himself parabolically as the Door of the sheepfold and the Good Shepherd of the sheep (John 10:1-21).
The world of shepherding and sheep would have been familiar to Jesus and to everyone in His audience. Sheep were important for their meat, milk, and wool; nevertheless, sheep are very dumb creatures. They require a lot of assistance, direction, maintenance, and protection. Shepherds would spend a lot of time with the sheep and would be dedicated to them. They would know their individual sheep. Sheep heed the specific voice and call of their shepherd; even when flocks are mixed, with a call or sound the sheep will appropriately separate out and follow their respective shepherds. Bears, lions, and wolves would find sheep an easy meal; other people might be tempted to steal sheep. Shepherds thus had to direct sheep to find appropriate pasturage and water, and would be kept in sheepfolds to provide some protection during the night. The shepherd would use the door (or gate) of the sheepfold; those who would come to rob and steal would try to enter another way.
Such was the story Jesus told about the sheep, the sheepfold, and the shepherd in John 10:1-18. The people would have understood the referents, but they did not understand what Jesus meant by it all (John 10:6). Jesus attempted to explain. He was the Door of the sheepfold, for the others who came and claimed to be the Messiah were really thieves and robbers, and the sheep, the people of God in Christ, did not listen to them. Those who go out through Jesus find salvation and “pasturage”; going after others leads to exploitation and oppression, but Jesus came to give abundant life. Jesus is the Good Shepherd of the sheep, who would lay down His life for the sheep. Hired hands would abandon the sheep if it proved too costly; the wolves, or the false Messiahs or religious authorities, would then come in to devour the sheep, God’s people. Jesus had sheep in other sheepfolds He would gather to Himself. But He knew His sheep, and they knew Him; He would lay down His life for them, and take it back up again, according to the commandment of His Father (John 10:1-18).
Jesus was by no means the first person to speak of Israel and leadership in terms of sheep and shepherding. Moses and David had been shepherds when God called them to lead His people (Exodus 3:1-6, 1 Samuel 6:11-13). The prophets would denounce the nobility and prophets of Israel as shepherds devouring the flock; yet YHWH promised He would return and personally shepherd Israel His sheep (cf. Ezekiel 34:1-31). We should definitely pick up on the textual association between Jesus, the I AM before Abraham, and Jesus the Good Shepherd, YHWH who had returned to personally shepherd His sheep (John 8:58, 10:11). How He would lay down His life for the sheep, and take it back up again, would become manifest in its good time.
The people did not quite know what to do with everything which had transpired (John 10:19). Some continued to be convinced Jesus was demon possessed and insane, and asked how anyone else could listen to Him (John 10:20; cf. John 8:48, 52). But others denied His words could come from a demon, and asked how anyone possessed by a demon could give sight to a blind man (John 10:21).
Thus John the Evangelist ended his narratives about Jesus at the Feast of Tabernacles. As Israel celebrated the gifts of light, food, water, and life during the Feast of Tabernacles, thus Jesus demonstrated how He was the Light of the world, giving sight and wisdom, providing pasturage and fountains of living water for those who believe in Him. He proclaimed Himself the Son of Man and God the Son and made attestation by doing a thing no prophet before had ever done, but was prophesied regarding the Messiah: He gave sight to a blind man. The people remained as divided as ever: plenty found reason to dismiss Him as demon-possessed and insane, and while no one could make complete sense of what He was teaching, others could not dismiss Him so easily or glibly. May we well recognize Jesus as our Shepherd, the Light of the world, giving life through His sacrifice, and share in life in Him!

2024.05.19 16:17 Skyward_Flight_11 What to wear to an Indian Wedding

(30F) My husband's Indian, non-member friend is getting married in August, and we are invited to the ceremony which will take place in a Hindu temple. I want to be culturally appropriate and respectful, but I also want to wear something that is garment-friendly. Anyone have experience with this crossing of cultures?
The invitation says, for the wedding ceremony for women, "a sari, a lehenga set, a salwar suit, etc." Based on some quick googling, it looks like a salwar suit might be my best bet? There is also a reception later that night where the dress code says " dresses, saris, ghagras, or something similar. Anything you would wear to a night out!" Does that mean the salwar suit would NOT be a good choice for the reception? Ideally, if I'm going to buy a new outfit for this wedding, I would like to wear it all day to get the most use out of it.
Sorry this is weirdly specific! I have zero experience with this culture. Any insight would be appreciated!

2024.05.19 02:48 Hot_Potential150 Break up 6 times and still trying to find peace!! Feel like I lost my other half.

I figured I would post this since there isn’t a lot out there like this and get some fresh perspectives. So we met in 2010, dated for years. Was absolutely out of this world the first year. She F(22) and myself (29) at the time. Moved in together after 4 months and the passion was like nothing I had ever experienced. Well, I lost my job, was on unemployment and she was a waitress. We made ends meet. I finally got work about 6 months later and we started to have a life again. But everything was a whirlwind by year 4. I was doing good, making six figures, buying houses. It was evrything we always wanted . But she was on ig and got really popular and she started looking at that life. She had always done bikini contests and what not so, i thought we could handle it. Around 2017, we break up as we weren’t seeing eye to eye and she was always saying she wasn’t in it. Well, 2 months later she comes back. She had hooked up with two guys but never told me. So, we are back together for 6 months and we get engaged and life seems blissful, sort of. Just she didn’t seem right all the time but we were out planning the wedding and we ever go on a cruise and had the time of our life. Then in September things started getting off with her and she is pulling away. She had been talking and texting a guy for the last 6 months. Well, she leaves again, and gets her own place. I tried talking to her for a few months, even got her out but she wasn’t having it. Two months later she still has a Christmas dinner with her Mom and stepdad at my house while texting a guy the whole night she is there. She was going to stay the night but was just pushing it and wouldn’t stop so I told her she might as well leave. So, needless to say, we don’t talk again until 2 months later as she needs help moving some stuff and she is moving states away. That was the hardest time for me. Watching the last 8 years of my life drive off into the distance. Devastated was an understatement. Everything seemed so real at that point. I didn’t hear from her for about 10 months, maybe once but nothing really. I messaged her off and on. She would tell me not to message her as she was on dates or doing something else. But anyway, she tells me 10 months later that she needs help with her house and wants me to come up. So, I do and we hang out every day and night for a week. I couldn’t believe it was happening. I am a nervous wreck while I am there and just trying to be the old me. Well, a few mo the go by and she wants to make it official. So, I buy a house in her state and move up there. She sleeps with a guy she had been with a week before I get there and never says a thing. So I get up there and things seem off. And we got into it a lot and I couldn’t figure it out. Well 6 months go by and we flip a house and sell mine that we were staying at. While flipping the house, she wants a house with land so we buy another house and I think our lives can finally start, but she goes back to the house in a different state and tells me she is done. She talks to me every now and then and decides to do counseling over the phone. While in counseling she tells me she doesn’t know if she wants to continue because she may miss Mr. Right. Well, I stay where I am and finish up two flips. 3 months later she decides she wants to try us again, I find out about all the guys she has been with and what happened the last year and I was upset and deeply hurt. Told her I just need to work through all of this. Well, for the next two months I was kind of in and out. But got back to our baseline. For 6 months the or so, we were good but then everything was off again. She wanted to break up, but wanted to keep the house. I tried to make it work for the next six months but she wasn’t in it and wanted to be successful and be with someone successful. So, I leave the state for six months. And I don’t see or hear from her for a year. I am back in the state she is in and I go to a concert. Meanwhile she had been dating someone for the last 7 months. She messages me at the concert and says she is single. We meet up and I grab her and kiss her. She calls me after the concert and go back to her house and talk for 6 hours. Well slowly we start talking and before you know it are back again. Once again, good for 6 months and she is done. I would get anxious sometimes and push if she needed space. And the other times she really wasn’t in it. But this last time, for some reason she was different. And I was different. But we needed up in the same place. I am the affectionate one, I am the passionate one, I am one who made it feel special. But I feel such loss everytime she leaves. People use the word soulmate. But it’s like I met myself. She was a daredevil, loved going for motorcycle rides and nice cars, we loved all the same music, same shows, same beliefs and values. We played ping pong and did karaoke. It was like nothing I have ever experienced.
The strange part is…. I never followed the ex back coaches advice. I would email her and message her. I always stayed in contact. And I wonder if that’s why she came back but always left. Months apart, years apart, it didn’t matter. When we were back together, it was like we had seen each other 5 mins ago. She would get with other guys and date around but I never did. I worked and dated a few but nothing serious. Always thought about her, no one else really compared.
Well, fast forward to today. It’s been about two and half months and we haven’t spoken. I have sent her some emails telling her how I feel. And left it at that. She reads them all but doesn’t respond. I am trying to let go and really move on but I don’t know how to let go of her or what we had as we have been together for 14 years and no matter how crazy the story, my love for her is forever. I always think, maybe she will come back again this time, she has 5 other times. But then I think, what will be different. I stayed in contact before, I think this time, I will have to let it be, and she would have to come to me. I know I always saw her as the love of my life. It was never a question. She loved me but nothing how I viewed her. She always left and got with other guys and didn’t skip a beat. Life went on and couldn’t be better. But when she was in it, she was all about me. When she went into her off modes, she had nothing.
I know with most of the forums and stories, the women leave and they can’t get that feeling back. But for her it’s like an on/off switch. So, she can always find it again. I feel like I really don’t know what to do? Where to go. We were going to start a family this year and really move forward but that didn’t happen. Now I am wondering will she talk to me? Will it be years? I know she will date other people. Will she stay with one of them. It’s all a lot to take in right now and the last two months have really sucked. You think it would get easier being the 6th time but it really doesn’t. Maybe a little bit it still hits like a freight train.i guess i will leave this here and if you have any questions, can fire away. Sorry for the long read, but any thoughts would be appreciated.

2024.05.19 01:05 Top_Bumblebee_1618 Need Relationship advice : Probable future in laws from hell

Alert: Long Post ahead
I have sort of been engaged to this man for over 9 months or so now. Ours is a inter-faith relationship. I am Hindu and he is catholic. Now to the story, since we decided to move ahead with our relationship we needed both our set of parents to agree. Initially his parents were all for it. I met them stayed 2 days at there place and they were lets say at least courteous towards me. While all of this was going on my parents tried really hard to talk me out of this relationship. But they have since gotten onboard. They are not very elated with the idea but they have accepted my choice.
Problem started soon after meeting his parents with his mom demanding that I convert if I plan on marrying him. She did not touch this topic in his presence and only discussed it with me over a call without even running it by him. I firmly told her that I am not converting at any cost. Since then everything has devolved into a dumpster fire.
After a lot of persuasion on his end his parents gave the go ahead that the families will meet. That is when I got my parents to go meet him one on one and they can later sit down with his parents. The night before my parents were supposed to meet him, his parents did a complete 180 and just denied ever accepting me or even discussing anything about me.
Their issue is that they want a church wedding at all cost. And to get married in the church I'll have to convert. The obvious solution that I could come up with was lets have court marriage and then just throw a reception. Yesterday when he was trying to convince his parents about this approach things got so heated and escalated that his father got physically abusive with him. Like he slapped him 4 or 5 times. When his mom tried to intervene I think she got hurt too. Now if anyone is assuming that maybe he is like 21 year old college student or something think again because he is 28 years old, holding down a good respectable job. Up untill this point I have found many execuses for his parents bad behaviours, chalking them upto insecurity, fear and what not. But I am dumbfounded with this episode. As is he I think he is still in shock.
Now here is my dilemma, if they can do that to their own son how am I ever going to feel safe being around them. He is an only child and the scope of going minimal contact is very limited. Other than that this man is amazing. If sunshine was a person that would be him Always warm, optimistic and just so resilient. I don't say this lightly but he is incapable of flaw. So where do I go from here. Should I end this relationship? The emotional cost of ending it would be too high for both of us. And him having these parents are not his fault. But I hate seeing him dragged through all of this for me.But should I be looking out for myself? Just typing this out here makes me feel guilty because this man has stood by me through so much. For example, I was suffering through a skin disorder being covered in blisters which everyone thought that it will never go away but not once in so many months did he his affections for me falter. How can I possibly imagine leaving him. I just don't know anything anymore.
Any advice would be appreciated.

2024.05.18 18:12 sirunabashful Crippling loneliness, or whatever it is.

throwaway account bcs they might be here on reddit.
Okay, i'm writing this because honestly, i don't have any to talk to at all. My social life, whatever remains of it, is dying (or dead, idk at this point.). Every friend i see as a friend, are all slowly going away, and it hurts like hell. So to whoever reads this, i'm happy that whatever i'm feeling is out here, understood and read by someone.
My entire life, i have never been good at making friends. I'm awful at it. Even at an early age, i came to be scared of making friends because i don't know who to trust. People are insanely good at hiding things, i'm sure everyone knows that. Some time in the late 2010's, i met someone. Great friend, similar interests, brought me into a community/scene i've always wanted to join, knew at some point i could trust him. From said year, and a couple years to come, he started to introduce me to some of his friends. We all thought that it'd be a great idea to start a group, and it really was. It basically turned into a family. Every day, we'd socialize on our consoles with each other. From the good things, to the bad things, we stuck together. There was never a day where we all felt apart. Come to the 2020's, we slowly started to become busy, but stay in contact, because of school and platform differences. Come one friend, introduces me to his friend, of which slowly turned into my best friend. We all get close, basically turns into the group prior, but even closer. Some of the previous group members even join in, which i loved and welcomed the idea. We all went through rain and shine, and we all came up on top.
fast forward to latety. i introduced someone to the group, and wanted to include them to the community. someone i told lies to, of which i highly regretted. i crossed a line i overlooked and i messed up (no i didn't do something criminal, please don't think of it like that.), and every day i genuinely regret and cringe at it. i also have messed up in another situation. things found out that have shouldn't been. that might have been the final nail in the coffin. it's been a month and a half of no socializing. and even in the days i tried to socialize, i loop back to what happened and i get scared of doing it again. i'm terrified of making someone feel a certain way about me, and pushing those who still are somewhat near me, further away. killing whatever i have left. i do feel at times, as well, that if one invites me to go out one-on-one, it's out of pity. i hate that feeling, but it is what it is.
it's tough. i have so much positivity i want to share, and happiness i want to give. but with no one around, i, in turn end up losing said positivity and happiness i wanted to share to someone to begin with. i want to go out and have fun, socialize. but i can't. i miss those days. never comes a day where i come across where we all had fun together in, and reminisce what we all did in that area. yes, i do cry about it, but what else can one do after everything that has happened. i don't blame anyone for what happened. it was all me for crossing the line. i do think it's fair to feel what they feel. it's really just tough to accept that it's all over.
coming home from visiting places we've all been to, crying can't be helped but to be done talaga. it's back to square one.
i miss socializing, loneliness is a bitch.
tl;dr - i made friends, i fucked it all up, i lose everyone.

I (50 M) just learned my spouse (47 F) was unfaithful years ago in marriage. She came clean from guilt. Where do I go from here?

This will be quite a lengthy read because I'm laying out everything to get honest opinions with all the context. There's a TLDR at the end for those who'd rather skip the backstory. I know that most people go incognito with a throwaway account for this kind of post. But I wanted this to be authentic, using my real account. I didn't want anyone to think this was disingenuous. If we know each other in real life or you find me on my other socials, let's keep our chats here or in PMs. I don't want anyone harassing anybody, and I have a sixteen-year-old daughter who has been spared this drama so far.
I tied the knot shortly after high school, and let's just say, if my marriage were a collegiate course, it would be "F*** Up - 101." It was a masterclass in what not to do, featuring every red flag in the book. I was fresh-faced and barely off on my life journey, thinking I'd hit the jackpot. I'd assumed I'd accomplished what my parents did, that being the poster couple for marital bliss. I was so naive, always giving the benefit of the doubt. Meanwhile, my then-wife, fresh from escaping her parental fortress of solitude, went bat s*** crazy, deciding that 'living life to the fullest' didn't include me in the picture.
Before I knew it, I was Mr. Mom with our toddler while she was trapped underneath a few individuals, making up for lost time. After finally catching her in the act, I filed for a divorce and braced for the impact. Divorcing in '97 in the heart of the bible belt was not favorable towards the husband back then. What followed was straight out of a horror movie. I paid my attorney five thousand dollars to watch her take everything from my guitars and video games. She even claimed keepsakes from a departed relative, and the judge seemed happy to grant her every wish. Not only did I bid farewell to everything I owned, but my time with my son got slashed to a mere Wednesday afternoon and alternating weekends.
My faith in women was broken. I went on a few dates here and there but mostly kept it to casual encounters and dinners. I never let anyone get too close. But, in early 1999, at a friend's birthday party, I met a woman whose marriage had crashed harder than mine. She'd had a stillbirth six months into her pregnancy, and her husband dared to bring his girlfriend to the funeral. She was heartbroken, to say the least, to learn about her husband's affair and the end of her marriage on the day they laid her daughter to rest. We sat on a couch that night, swapping tales of romantic ruin. She was clever, and to me, that is an instant connection. It's rare for me to find someone who makes me laugh instead of vice versa. As I headed home, I couldn't shake her from my thoughts, kicking myself for not asking for her number.
The next, my phone rang, and it was her! She'd gotten my phone number from someone we both knew and asked: "Would you like to get food sometime?" I said, "Now sounds great!" So, I drove to her grandmother's house, and off we went on what turned out to be what I still consider the perfect date. Now, I get it; we were both lonely and had our hearts broken, but trust me, this was no spark; it was an inferno. And believe it or not, we've been inseparable since that day. We have not spent a night apart. That was twenty-five years ago, with us marrying a year after our meeting. Go ahead and facepalm, I know how it sounds, but it's hard to put the connection between us into words. Even I'm still shaking my head in disbelief.
Our families adored the two of us together. I was certain I had found my soulmate, if you believe in that, and I was certain she felt the same. We enjoyed each other's company, and our lives meshed perfectly. As with life, however, it finds those moments of bliss to take a giant s*** on you. In 2006, I began feeling ill; eating resulted in violent illness, which I initially thought was a virus. But after a week with no improvement, it was clear this was something else. I was admitted to the local hospital and underwent numerous tests. When I was first admitted, I weighed 222 pounds at a height of 6'2". Within a year, I had dropped to 146 pounds, and my condition dumbfounded the doctors. My health was deteriorating rapidly. Throughout the ordeal, she never left my side, her hand in mine, begging me not to leave her.
In late 2007, a last-ditch effort sent me to the Cleveland Clinic, where a young doctor rushed me into surgery. When I awoke three hours later, she was there, hand in mine, with a smile. It was a success; I was cured. While I'll spare you the details, it involved my colon. Finally, I could eat and move without agony. My life resumed, and we were happy again. The following year, she received a lucrative job offer in her field, earning more than I did. That didn't bother me at all; she worked hard, and she'd earned it.
After her miscarriage, my wife was unable to conceive. We had been trying since 2000 and eventually came to terms with the fact that it might not happen. In 2010, we got a call from the state of Minnesota about a two-year-old girl who had been taken from her mother due to drug-related charges. They asked if we would consider adopting her because the mother had requested she be placed with family members before her parental rights were terminated. My wife and I drove for 30 hours to meet her, and after a few months, we adopted her and welcomed her into our home.
Our daughter faced social challenges and had endured abuse, leading the two of us to decide one of us needed to be at home with her. As mentioned, my wife earned significantly more, so it made sense for me to be the one to step into the role. I dedicated each day to supporting our daughter's mental health. While I played a part, I can't claim all the credit for this; her preschool, kindergarten, and therapist were instrumental in her learning to socialize and trust again. Eventually, I took up freelance journalism, so I was home when our little one finished her school day.
Our evenings were family time, and we took small trips on weekends. It was in 2017 that my wife returned from work one evening, deeply shaken by what she told me was a workplace argument. Despite my attempts to console her, she remained incorrigible. She was declaring her intent to find a new job. She'd never had any issues before, so I was stunned. For days, she was a mess and withdrawn. When I pressed for details, she'd say, "It would only upset you. Let me deal with it."
True to her word, she left for a new company within a week, accepting a 15 percent reduction in pay. I should have questioned it then, but she never gave me cause for concern. Once she began her new role, life returned to normal, and our family happily moved forward. In 2022, I published my first novel with an independent publisher, fulfilling a lifelong dream. I could sense the pride emanating from both my wife and daughter. I had achieved this milestone before my fiftieth birthday, and I couldn't wait to start on my second one.
And now, ladies and gentlemen, this is where my world breaks. In 2023, as I was finishing up my new novel, my twenty-seven-year-old son from my first marriage died suddenly of a heart attack. He had an underlying condition that none of us knew about. I want everyone to understand that when you say, "I couldn't imagine my child dying," you truly can't. There is no pain quite like it. My wife and daughter, who also felt his loss deeply, did their best to support me. But there is no way to deal with such a tragedy. In the months following his death, I immersed myself in my work, striving to complete my second book for him.
On the day I finished it in January, my father passed away after a long battle. Dad had been ill for a long time. You think you can prepare yourself for that, but that's a lie you tell yourself. The loss was hard, and my daughter was instrumental in getting me back on my feet. My second book was released in February, and I tried to smile as I had my release party. At the beginning of April, I started feeling better, writing outlines for my third novel and doing the same things I'd always done with my wife and daughter.
My wife and I have a Wednesday tradition where she picks a random recipe she finds online, and we cook it together. On April 3rd, while making crockpot chicken tacos, I thanked her for everything. She asked why, and I thanked her for everything she'd done to get me through the tough times. I shared a lot of pent-up emotions, telling her I couldn't have managed without her. She started crying, then weeping, and soon she was sobbing uncontrollably. I tried to comfort her with a hug, but she pushed me away. I apologized, not realizing my words would stir such a reaction.
Suddenly, she confesses her infidelity. I laughed, mistaking it for a joke. She grabs my shoulders and then details how, back in 2017, a 28-year-old at her former job started flirting with her, and she reciprocated. She believed it was innocent, yet it persisted. My wife has always feared growing old. Her birthdays were days she dreaded every year. She admitted that the attention from a younger man was exhilarating. She told me that turning 40 had sent her into a tailspin and that she couldn't talk to me about it because I would have just shrugged it off.
He invited her to leave work early and come to his place one day. She couldn't understand why she chose to; maybe it was the thrill. She said she didn't know, but she went and ended up sleeping with him. Afterward, she felt terrible, glaring at her keychain in his driveway because it had a photo of me holding our daughter. She drove home, and that's when she lied about having a workplace argument. She never wanted to return there. It's why she suddenly went somewhere else. She then told me she wanted to tell me but didn't have the fortitude to do it.
I remained silent, just wide-eyed and open-mouthed. She apologized, saying she couldn't live with it any longer. I just shook my head, unable to speak a single word. She offered to leave if that's what I wanted, to attend counseling, or even to beg for my forgiveness. Instead, I picked up my AirPods and phone and walked out. I wandered from six in the evening until almost eleven that night. When I returned, she was on the loveseat, asking if I was ready to talk. I shook my head again, went to my office, where I had a couch, and slept there.
The next day, after our daughter left for school, she asked if I had anything to say. I said yes. I questioned why she brought this up after the worst year of my life. Why couldn't she have kept it to herself until I could somewhat deal with something of this magnitude? She just looked away. I scoffed and told her to go to work and to try not to f*** anyone during her lunch break. That would have been April 4th; those were the last words I said to her until last night.
She had attempted to talk to me several times, but I would just walk past her into my office, trying to focus on my upcoming science fiction comedy book. Writing something funny is challenging when the thought of your spouse rolling around with another man stuck in her consumes your thoughts. A week ago, my daughter asked in the car if everything was okay, and I lied to her, which made me feel sick. Then, last night, my wife came to the office door and asked, "Are we getting a divorce?" I looked at her and replied, "Looks like it." She started crying and closed the door.
I haven't consulted an attorney, and the thought of divorce hadn't crossed my mind until she mentioned it. That's why I wrote this essay. Where do I go from here? How do I start to untangle this mess? I have no desire for therapy. I don't even want to step outside. I'm broken at this moment. The burden of everything has been overwhelming. There's been so much to bear this past year. What do you say to someone who has been by your side through it all, only to tear your heart apart?
Thank you for reading to the end. And for those who are part of the TLDR crowd, my wife decided to go home with a younger man, felt guilty about it, and quit her job. She waited eight years to tell me about it.

Jesus, man. I’m sorry for your loss(es). Timing of your wife’s confession is mind-boggling. Realistically, this is above Reddit’s pay grade. I’ll recommend therapy, but probably above a therapist’s pay grade too. I know you also state you don’t want therapy, but that sounds like the exact time you need it. They can offer grief support, which is what you’ll need as you tease out emotions from losing loved ones and a very nasty betrayal. I hope you find happiness in whatever you decide.
OOP: I contemplated several different subs and I have no idea why I chose this one. I should have clarified above that after my son died, local hospice house around here has grief counseling, which I used extensively. I don't want to do couple's counseling is what I should have said. My apologies. I posted this to try and get outside perspectives from people, and maybe give me a different angle to look at this.

cakivalue
Not couples counseling but individual therapy for you. You need the support right now after all you've been through and an unbiased third party to support you through the pain and demise of your marriage, next steps and co-parenting.
My unprofessional angle here is that this is most likely over. Had she come clean in 2017 you would have been able to make a choice regarding forgiveness, couples therapy etc. she held on to this secret for seven years and then dumped it on you at the worst time in order to ease her own guilty feelings. Especially knowing that you had both been hurt in this exact way in the past is especially jaw dropping that she did all of this.

Magnum_tv
Fuck man! This is...just fuck...
Firstly, I'm so sorry for your losses. I extend my sincere condolences.
You need grief counseling. This would help you put things in perspective. At least you'll be able to eventually make decisions based on logic than just pure emotion.
Secondly, your spouse. She not only betrayed you, she lied to you for eight years. EIGHT YEARS! That's fucking scary, because now you're gonna be wondering what else she can be hiding.
Now I'm an asshole, I'd be out of that marriage tomorrow. You however, have truly built a life with her. If, and I mean a big fucking IF, she's regretful, you should divorce, it would be less stress in your life having to be her warden. Because the trust is gone.
If, she's remorseful, you could try to work it out. But she needs to put in the work. Not you, HER. Because she's the one who fucked up.
Remember, regret and remorse are two completely different things.
I'd recommend you still talk to a lawyer before making a final decision. The more informed you are, the better choice you'll be able to make.
I'm truly sorry you're dealing with this, best of luck brother.
OOP: Thank you so much. This is another thing in the back of my mind what else has she been dishonest about?

Update - 3 days later

UPDATE - After spending Saturday morning formulating and reading the staggering number of comments, I've made my decision. Some said my issue was far beyond the Reddit pay grade – they were mistaken. I deliberately avoided turning to family and friends, seeking a view from an outside perspective, and I think it worked. My gratitude goes out to all who sent private messages and responded; your thoughts on the matter helped me come to my conclusion.
On Saturday evening, I approached my wife to apologize for the silent treatment, I told her I wasn't attempting to punish her and acknowledged that it was childish. I told her if I would have opened my mouth, I would have been overly harsh and ruined any opportunity of a civil conversation. I promised we'd discuss it the next day.
On Sunday evening, I let it all out; I didn't cry, or raise my voice. I asked the man's name, which she provided. I asked her if the man was married when she betrayed us, and she confirmed he was. That hit me hard, because she knew he was also with someone. I asked if he was still married. She told me she had no clue, she hadn't seen him since the day she left for her new job. I told her I hoped they were, because I was going to make sure she knew. If my life had to be ripped apart, so would his. I thought that would get a rise out of her, it didn't. She just nodded.
I expressed my doubts about the affair being an isolated event, echoing the comments of several others. She maintained it was a one-off and was the sole reason she left her job. I explained that after eight years of this lie, it's natural for me to question anything she said. I then made it clear that if there's more to the story than what she's admitted, now is the time to be as open and honest as possible.
Any further revelations would be a deal-breaker for me, and there would be no excuse that could rectify it. She pleaded it was a singular occurrence and that she's been wanting to confess since it happened. I asked if he had reached out after her departure, she denied any contact. I responded that it didn't surprise me, assuming he got what he wanted and moved on to another person at work. It was the only cheap shot I threw.
I requested that she leave the house for a few weeks, I wasn't telling her it was over, but I wanted to be away from her. I suggested she could stay with her sister, her mother, or even rent a place—anywhere but here. I also informed her of my intention to discuss the situation with our daughter, who is 16 by the way, some people have commented believing her to be quite younger. To my surprise, my wife revealed she had already told her about a week ago, which I was completely unaware of. She inquired about the tone of the house, and my anger, and my wife confessed to her. Before my daughter went to bed, I asked her, and indeed, my wife had admitted that she had been unfaithful. I wanted to know why she hadn't come to me about it, and she told me she didn't want to make me feel worse.
I've decided to keep her home from school tomorrow to have a heart-to-heart about everything. It's important for me to understand her feelings and to emphasize that harboring hatred towards her mother isn't the goal. Her mother has always been loving and supportive. It's natural for her to feel angry, and that's okay, but picking sides isn't beneficial – nobody wins in this situation. It's a tough reality I'm coming to terms with, everyone loses. Tomorrow, I plan to contact three local therapists and reach out to the grief counselor I met after my son's death. I'm not interested in couple's therapy; I believe individual therapy is what I need, and since it's highly recommended, I'm going to pursue it.
My daughter's school year is ending soon, and I'm looking forward to spending quality time with her. I prefer to keep our plans private from family and friends; it's our personal matter. Someone advised me about controlling the narrative, but the only thing that matters now is that my daughter knows the truth. I need some time to come to terms if this relationship is salvageable. I need this time for self-reflection and to assess the situation. When she asked if we were going the route of legal separation, I clarified that it wasn't the case. I told her that when I look at her it brings up feelings of anger, which isn't healthy.
To my astonishment, she consented to everything. She doesn't want our relationship to end, and I reminded her that her actions with him forfeited that choice to me. She mentioned my wedding ring as a sign that she still matters to me, and I assured her that she does. I proposed we conclude things there. As I walked by, I touched her shoulder; she nodded in agreement. Later, she phoned her sister and made plans to stay with her the following evening after work.
TLDR. I want to express my gratitude to everyone for their support and guidance, except to the asshole that just wanted to pick a fight. I apologize for the length of my initial post; I believed the full context was necessary to help you understand why I'm so conflicted. To those who reached out privately and know my identity, your discretion is deeply appreciated. I'm looking forward to spending the next month with my daughter and starting therapy. Your messages are welcome, and I'll do my best to respond to each one. I'll provide another update in the future when I've made a decision about our next steps or if it's time to move on. I am not rushing into this decision lightly.

Clearly you have given this a lot of thought, and come up with a way forward that is best for you. Good luck in therapy, get yourself mentally right, there is no rush to make a final decision on your marriage. Take good care of your daughter! She seems like an amazing kid. Hang in there.
