There's a restaurant we've passed a few times, that caught our eye because it's a "Cajun Seafood and Chinese Restaurant." How would such an unlikely combination occur? Well, last date night, we decided to skip Vin Rouge, Harvest 18, and some of our other favorites and pursue this mystery. EDIT: It is called "Crab Sea".
It's in the somewhat "down-market" Parkwood shopping center. (I say "down-market" as the anchor store is a Big Lots, and there was a guy selling rims out of his trunk in the parking lot.) Anyway, we walk in, and are struck by the decor: lots of nautical things like ship's wheels and nets on the walls, a few chinese language posters, and....a big fake Christmas tree. There were also Christmas lights, a stuffed reindeer, and a Christmas-themed Harley Davidson figurine. There are two TVs: one with the sound turned off with an aquarium being displayed, and one blasting generic international EDM. There are giant fiberglass lobsters and crabs arrayed around the place. There's also a six-foot pirate statute that looks like a generic "Jack Sparrow". The waitress has an unplaceable accent, and escorts us to our table. The place is entirely empty of customers. When we get our menu we find there is indeed Cajun seafood boils, Chinese cuisine, and....wings. It's a wing place too. So I have a super-sweet ice tea, and my wife gets a Corona, and we order. The waitress sets our table with styrofoam plates, plastic cutlery, and a basket of sauce packets. The whole time we're there, only one other group comes in, and gets a giant clear plastic bag of what seems like mostly crab legs. Another dozen or so people come in and out, some getting take-out. We get our food, served in styrofoam take-away containers. The lemon-wings my wife got were actually pretty good. The Kung Pao chicken was kinda bland and didn't have peanuts in it, which I always thought was required, so I'll rate it as "food court grade". Anyway, the waitress was friendly, the service was quick, it was cheap, and the bizarre decor is certainly entertaining. We were trying to discreetly photograph ourselves with one of the giant fiberglass crustaceans, and one of the cooks came out and took our phone, insisting on taking the photo so we could both be in it.
Entertaining, certainly. Can anybody come up with a weirder restaurant in the Bull City?
