After a quick research, I stumbled upon the Cold Steel Chaos, a double-edge fixed blade inspired by the classic trench knives from both World Wars. This knife was designed for modern-day warriors, offering both security and comfort while holding it.
Upon holding the knife, the unique D-ring guard made of reinforced 6061 aluminum caught my attention. It allowed me to grip the knife securely, while also protecting my hand from incoming attacks and damage. The 1055 carbon steel pommel was tapered for punyo or butt-strikes, making it perfect to defend myself in a life-threatening scenario.
The 7.5-inch SK-5 high carbon blade was available in either double-edge or tanto blade shapes. After a quick research, I stumbled upon the Cold Steel Chaos, a double-edge fixed blade inspired by the classic trench knives from both World Wars. This knife was designed for modern-day warriors, offering both security and comfort while holding it.
Upon holding the knife, the unique D-ring guard made of reinforced 6061 aluminum caught my attention. It allowed me to grip the knife securely, while also protecting my hand from incoming attacks and damage. The 1055 carbon steel pommel was tapered for punyo or butt-strikes, making it perfect to defend myself in a life-threatening scenario.
The 7.5-inch SK-5 high carbon blade was available in either double-edge or tanto blade shapes. Pattern is McCall's 8424, View A. For any techniques new to me, e.g. understitching and slip stitching, I used Simplicity tutorials. For the darts and zip insertion, I used Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Sewing. The fabric is a pair of curtains where the lining had disintegrated so they were no longer usable. I don't know what the fabric is, other than woven. The bodice lining was cut from an old bedsheet. I'm wearing it over a bandeau style bra.
The cape is a circle cape cut from tulle, following this tutorial. I had no idea what I was going to do with the tulle when I bought it, so I bought 2 metres, which is why the cape is the length it is and not longer. I've previously made a floor length cloak from the same tutorial. My other previous projects include pajama trousers and envelope cushion covers, so this was very much my biggest project so far.
Oh boy, did I have a time getting it to fit! I didn't make a mock up - I thought I didn't have time, but I can guarantee making a mock up and then the real thing would have been faster than diving straight into the real thing and then having to fix a multitude of fitting errors. I didn't realise the importance of grading a pattern, so I cut the bodice and skirt different sizes. When they inevitably didn't fit together, I had to frankenstein some extra panels in. My dodgy, dyspraxic measuring meant there were holes where they joined, which are thankfully covered by the ribbon at the waist.
The shoulders are too wide for me, so I added extra darts at the back to get rid of some of the excess. The bodice is too long for my torso, but I'd already put the zip in and attached the sleeves before I realised. I puzzled for ages over how to fix it, and eventually attached two pieces of clear elastic across the shoulders (like a spaghetti strap vest) to help hold it up. It's not ideal, and although it hangs relatively crease free when I'm stood still and upright, as soon as I move it creases terribly.
To get the zipper all the way to the top when dressing alone, I've attached a piece of string to the zipper pull, which I can tuck inside the dress when I'm wearing it.
I made it for a festival I'm going to this week where its tradition to wear a funky outfit (whatever that means to you). I pulled a muscle in my neck trying it on at home, so getting into it in a tent will be interesting!
I also made a matching bag loosely following this tutorial with a strap made from matching ribbon attached to two split rings.
Overall I had a blast making it and I learned loads, but there were moments of huge frustration and throughout most of the process I didn't think I'd have a wearable garment at the end of it.
