2024.05.21 17:00 Pretty-Big-6908 Low GPA, but work experience and extra curricular
Hi I am 26M,
PGY1 that has 2.8 GPA (for minor in sports science) and med school was pass fail. I had two scholarships for MD, but since it was a pass fail degree it’s not calculated into my GPA. My med school ranking top 20.
My low GPA was due to extenuating circumstances where social political movements, mom passed away, along with plans for exchange cancelled due to COVID (hence randomly took up the minor in order to fulfil credits)
I dedicated a portion of my time doing some public health research for my clinical elective (but no papers) and community public health services.
I tried to prove myself with good intern evaluations at my hospital.
Thanks for the advice guys
I’m hoping to aim for Columbia MPH (mainly for its research)

2024.05.21 12:29 Even-Search-277 CMU MSCF vs Columbia MSCS for quant trading
I studied Financial Engineering (major) and Computer Science (minor) at Columbia for my bachelor's. I currently have 5 years of experience in FX algo trading at a bank.
I aim to transition to the buy-side in quant trading, with a stronger focus on research. I believe a master's degree, particularly with a focus on machine learning, would open more opportunities in quant trading and research. Additionally, I want to experience life outside of New York and enjoy the campus environment for my mental well-being.
I have offers from the CMU MSCF and Columbia MSCS programs. While CMU offers a lower cost with a scholarship and the chance to leave New York, its curriculum seems to include many subjects that I find irrelevant/overlap with my undergraduate studies and lacks flexibility in machine learning.
If anyone is familiar with these programs, please share your thoughts:
- Which school (or applying for a new job) would be a better choice for my career?
- CMU MSCF requires a summer internship. Would it make sense for me to apply for an internship with significant prior work experience?
Thank you in advance!

2024.05.20 18:47 Conny_and_Theo CK3 RICE Mod Dev Diary #47 Sicily Flavor Pack (Part 3): Flavor Content for Southern Italy
| https://preview.redd.it/6v22roz0rj1d1.jpg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=461d36f235f05c69357fcd350bd480bfe9bee9bd “Because of the variety of different people subject to our rule [in Sicily], the usages, customs and laws which have existed among them up to now are not abrogated unless what is observed in them is clearly in contradiction to our edicts here.” - Roger II of Sicily I'm Cybrxkhan, creator of the Regional Immersion and Cultural Enrichment (RICE) mod, which adds simple "Flavor Packs'' to different parts of the world. This is the third, final dev diary about RICE’s next flavor pack, Sicily: Where Three Worlds Met. In dev diaries 1 and 2, we covered the Sicilian struggle. Today, we’ll go over more miscellaneous features in this update instead, such as new activities, buildings, historical characters, and more! If you want to read the previous dev diaries, here’s links to them: Lastly, feel free to check my mods' website, discord, and twitter for more info, previews, and updates as well! Liminality Dynasty Legacy The last time RICE introduced a new dynasty legacy was way back with the Tarim Basin flavor pack in 2022. Now, a new one will come with the Sicily update, called Liminality. Liminality has both general bonuses, and those more specific to the Sicilian struggle’s mechanics. For instance, the 1st perk in this legacy, Populus Trlininguis, doubles trait XP you gain in the Sicilian Signore trait (a trait given to every ruler in Sicily) from various actions in the Sicilian struggle. It also improves interfaith opinion, and the language learning scheme. https://preview.redd.it/mv4yygejqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c23b653c8a23e10217fe1d5e386494dda4f75017 The five perks in this legacy are: - Populus Trilinguis
- Latifunda
- Incastellamento
- Nostalgia
- Grand Signores
If you recall from the 1st Sicily struggle dev diary, the Sicily struggle can start up again and repeat continuously unless you achieve the Crossroads or Dominion ending. However, both these “true” endings require that you unlock the whole track – an important incentive to go through this track if you want to truly master the Sicilian Frontier. Activities Pilgrimage to Monte Gargano Some of the new activity-related content has to do with previously introduced activities in RICE. For instance, Christians in Sicily now have access to their own local pilgrimage, to Monte Gargano in Foggia in southern Italy. https://preview.redd.it/pkvhaq9kqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d1bca374ea9b46b8297d1e435c21ff9f2bd88843 Historically, the main destination for pilgrims was the sanctuary for Saint Michael there. As one of the earliest centers of pilgrimage dedicated to the Archangel Michael, it served as a model for future, similar pilgrimage sites, such as Monte-Saint-Michel, an Abbey in Normandy that RICE already added a local pilgrimage activity for. Baths of Baia Another one of RICE’s general activities is the Visit to the Hot Springs. For those unfamiliar with this RICE feature, it is an activity that can be done anywhere in one’s realm, but going to certain baronies gives extra bonuses like useful modifiers. The barony of Naples, will now be one such site, for the baths of Baia. https://preview.redd.it/6isk423mqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d745aa92ff3886eda79013e4d89f9794293dc252 Baia was a popular resort for centuries, and during both the ancient and medieval era, it had a negative reputation as a place of decadence and sin. While both male and female visitors were criticized in historical sources, the latter generally faced greater scrutiny and disapproval. https://preview.redd.it/9h8g9pomqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=24c51073bfd58838d5d40fdd88a5eccf8b313b71 Thus, while you’ll get a beneficial modifier from visiting the hot springs in Baia, the modifier has a malus to piety and opinion, and the malus is doubled if your gender isn’t considered dominant by your faith. If your faith meets certain requirements, like having the hedonist tenet, you get bonuses to piety/opinion rather than maluses instead. Ancient Tombs There are also two new activities. One, available to anyone in the region, is to pay a Visit to the Crypta Neapolitana. In medieval times, people thought the poet Virgil used magic to build this tunnel, as he was venerated as a powerful sorcerer in medieval legend. People also believed his tomb was nearby, and visitors from near and far came to his supposed tomb, which also became a local site of Christian worship. https://preview.redd.it/noriwwsnqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b7b53001af575ab07a1abc902910f7b5702cbe0c Going on this activity lets you choose between two intents, that provide different modifiers: to be either Inspired by Virgil, or supposedly be blessed by Virgil’s Miracles. Virgil’s legendary tomb isn’t the only tomb you can visit, however. In the city of Palermo, you can pay a Visit to Palermo’s Ancient Tombs to similarly gain minor bonuses and modifiers. It is available only to those who have territory on the island of Sicily, and has two options: the tomb of the philosopher Aristotle, or that of the physician Galen. https://preview.redd.it/uyax9hboqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2adb88892ce87ff560050b3d695f84f9db70dfb4 Ibn Hawqal, a 10th century Arab geographer and scholar, observed that the main mosque of Palermo (previously the city’s main church) had a wooden beam where Aristotle's supposed coffin was suspended. Ibn Hawqal further notes how Christians venerated this Greek philosopher and prayed to him for rain. Meanwhile, Galen’s purported tomb lay Misilmeri, a short distance from Palermo on the road to Agrigento. A useful source making note of this was that of al-Harawi, an Iranian traveler from the 13th century. Special Buildings and Modifiers Several special buildings have been added to the map in southern Italy. Generally, I spread them out with roughly one per duchy (with the exception of Sicily), representing different aspects of the region’s history, and buildings that I felt would be more relevant for the time period. https://preview.redd.it/23a79lbpqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=06fb2d685a07160e4eefec1aebb726732320ec99 The buildings, and the baronies they are in, are as follows: - Arch of Trajan in Benevento: One of the finest and best-known surviving examples of a Roman triumphal arch.
- Monte Cassino in Cassino: One of the most influential Christian abbeys during the high medieval period.
- Mount Etna in Catania: One of the tallest active volcanoes in Europe; the land around it is particularly fertile.
- Royal Palace of Palermo in Palermo: A magnificent example of the fusion of Islamic, Byzantine, and Latin artistic styles. It is not built at game start.
- Generic University in Salerno to represent the Salerno School of Medicine, arguably the most important medieval European center of medicine, drawing from Latin, Arabic, Greek, and Jewish medical traditions.
https://preview.redd.it/ns9vbtcqqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fab2f910f6b71cd6ded4f34cc1560243cb816eb7 The Salerno School of Medicine is also represented by a special county modifier in Salerno to represent its unique influence on medieval Europe and as a scholarly crossroads of different cultural traditions. https://preview.redd.it/06th8bfrqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=754228a70f1bf0231857d9ae12c5f560092c5a92 Nearby, the county of Naples has the Phlegraean Fields modifier, representing the famous resort region discussed earlier. https://preview.redd.it/9wzijrwrqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0f2d54a5391ab76705dc18d20d51d3e74d47a1da Historical Characters and Flavor Several historical characters have been added across both bookmarks, and some come with flavor. I won’t list them all here, but I’ll mention a couple of the more interesting ones. Rulers For new playable rulers, in 867 we have Uthman. Historically, he ruled the Emirate of Taranto and may have harbored a defeated Emir Sawdan – the new bookmarked character in 867 if you recall – if Sawdan wasn't executed or captured by King Louis of Italy. Taranto was later conquered by Christian forces in 880. As Taranto is in the county of Bari in-game, I opted to make Uthman a vassal count of Sawdan. https://preview.redd.it/envfi7ntqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d717f083dd4108f58231c8eedc1805b148989101 In 1066, Robert Guiscard is no longer the owner of Bari. In real life, Bari was controlled by the Byzantines until 1071; I assume PI has it otherwise either for balance reasons or to reflect how the Byzantines mainly controlled the region’s coastline. Anyhow, the new “count” of Bari in 1066 is Aboulchares, the second to last Catepan of Italy, who historically led the Byzantine defense against the Normans admirably. Based on his name, he was likely of Arab origin. https://preview.redd.it/a0dfglauqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=41481efffdc80afb3195fddd039191c1b4ff3258 Courtiers Aaron or Abu Aaron is a Jewish mystic and scholar in the 867 bookmark who was prominent in southern Italy at the time. He starts off as a courtier and friend of Sawdan, the Emir of Bari. https://preview.redd.it/ely0f2xuqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b940a1f28d28bff495caf75a4393c898175355e1 A few years after game start, if he is in your court, most likely that of Sawdan, you’ll get an event where he’ll try to return to his homeland in Mesopotamia. In Jewish sources, the locals, including Sawdan, tried convincing him to stay, with Sawdan going as far as attempting to forcibly detain him, but nothing came out of it. If Abu Aaron is allowed to go, or successfully escapes an attempt to detain him, then he’ll go to the court of whoever’s holding Baghdad. https://preview.redd.it/b7zm7kcvqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e7672ae2aa35a581eaeaa0bf825876cc5219b929 Constantine of Africa is a Christian monk and physician of North African origin (and possibly a convert from Islam) in the 1066 bookmark. He played a prominent role in the translation of medical texts and the development of Salerno’s school of medicine mentioned above. https://preview.redd.it/3vhx1stvqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8464155d9790b50a9eb631581a8c3b84fd72713e Starting Flavor There’s also some other flavor to flesh out the historical situation in 1066. To represent the aforementioned Norman attack on Bari, there is a new county claim war at the start of the game in 1066: the Norman Conquest of Bari. While the Byzantines do outnumber Robert Guiscard, the attacker, he’s been given extra troops at game start and the ERE is fighting a two-front war as they’re also being invaded by the Seljuks. https://preview.redd.it/j6ei2mkwqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=42e2b6b9ebeb2b2c83c71e6685b8e95e324a4a1f Next, in 1066, a random selection of counties North Africa, particularly those controlled by or near the Zirids in Tunisia, will start off with a hit to control and a modifier called Chronic Ifriqyan Famines that reduces control and development. There is a small chance every year they’ll disappear. https://preview.redd.it/o74dsq3xqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3f49d66aa170773f19f7f73f62acd689228c89c The modifiers encourage you to take the interaction to ask for grain shipments from Sicily discussed in the previous dev diary, since if you’ve done so recently, it’ll increase the chances of your counties losing the modifier significantly. For some historical context, as was also discussed in the previous dev diary, North Africa was increasingly dependent on exports of grain from Sicily in the 11th and 12th centuries. Minor Decisions There are a few minor flavor decisions that can be taken, besides the struggle-related ones discussed in dev diary 2. https://preview.redd.it/36u77woxqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3b68fcf75a91853df62f43becfdd383047ef5ac0 First, rulers near Salerno can take the decision to Support the Medical School of Salerno for a cost, which gives a beneficial health. There’s a chance you’ll get further modifiers, artifacts, or even a physician courtier for free. This chance is increased if you own Salerno. This is also one of the few ways you can get a boost to all tracks of the Sicilian signore trait at once. Lastly, there is a minor decision to Construct the Admiral’s Bridge for rulers in Palermo. The Admiral’s bridge, impressive back in its day, and, interestingly, was the site of a major battle during Garibaldi’s expedition during the Italian Unification in the 1860s. https://preview.redd.it/6laow06yqj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=10be181c5c6ea9c8ac01383b039367f04198fdbd The decision grants you and Palermo modifiers for a while. Historically, the bridge got its name from how it was built on the orders of George of Antioch, one of the most powerful officials of the Kingdom of Sicily in the 12th century who was given the title of Great Admiral or Admiral of Admirals. However, some recent scholarship has casted doubt on this, and the bridge might be older, perhaps even dating back to the Islamic period. Concluding Remarks That concludes the final dev diary! Following the Sicily update, if time permits, work will start on a minor patch to add in miscellaneous features and bugfixes. The next planned flavor pack after Sicily is on the Zhangzhung and the Bön religion of ancient Tibet. ETA for the Sicily content will be at the end of the month (though possibly early next month, depending on time/energy). Despite the large size of this update, there’s a lot that will be cut for time, that I might add in future updates. Until then, I’ll continue to post further previews on my discord, twitter, etc. Thank you all for your time! Generally, I spread them out with roughly one per duchy (with the exception of Sicily), representing different aspects of the region’s history, and buildings that I felt would be more relevant for the time period. https://preview.redd.it/n68wnslxpj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=39300d9a3a5735deec75d401ae47a925685fc6d8 The buildings, and the baronies they are in, are as follows: - Arch of Trajan in Benevento: One of the finest and best-known surviving examples of a Roman triumphal arch.

As Taranto is in the county of Bari in-game, I opted to make Uthman a vassal count of Sawdan. https://preview.redd.it/dhk4mwl1qj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b471e989e6932017d49f00c88ec39035e1e3b76c In 1066, Robert Guiscard is no longer the owner of Bari. Based on his name, he was likely of Arab origin. https://preview.redd.it/ac6vibf2qj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5af49b2d34bc3c20e1f15db0075186cd09f43faa Courtiers Aaron or Abu Aaron is a Jewish mystic and scholar in the 867 bookmark who was prominent in southern Italy at the time. He starts off as a courtier and friend of Sawdan, the Emir of Bari. https://preview.redd.it/ohf9d953qj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dbe380a2530c58793353f5837e543ce31dfb7f47 A few years after game start, if he is in your court, most likely that of Sawdan, you’ll get an event where he’ll try to return to his homeland in Mesopotamia. In Jewish sources, the locals, including Sawdan, tried convincing him to stay, with Sawdan going as far as attempting to forcibly detain him, but nothing came out of it. If Abu Aaron is allowed to go, or successfully escapes an attempt to detain him, then he’ll go to the court of whoever’s holding Baghdad. https://preview.redd.it/e9fddzt3qj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ec9e8a45d281db20d19aa1e07bfcd6504235a81f Constantine of Africa is a Christian monk and physician of North African origin (and possibly a convert from Islam) in the 1066 bookmark. He played a prominent role in the translation of medical texts and the development of Salerno’s school of medicine mentioned above. https://preview.redd.it/iowt6o55qj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=89dffcea41f12f666c060b1209ab0cb2ee40ee9a Starting Flavor There’s also some other flavor to flesh out the historical situation in 1066. To represent the aforementioned Norman attack on Bari, there is a new county claim war at the start of the game in 1066: the Norman Conquest of Bari. While the Byzantines do outnumber Robert Guiscard, the attacker, he’s been given extra troops at game start and the ERE is fighting a two-front war as they’re also being invaded by the Seljuks. https://preview.redd.it/80rck756qj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f8593da144e6a05f5e4cfba62c4a1ca5778f130 Next, in 1066, a random selection of counties North Africa, particularly those controlled by or near the Zirids in Tunisia, will start off with a hit to control and a modifier called Chronic Ifriqyan Famines that reduces control and development. There is a small chance every year they’ll disappear. The modifiers encourage you to take the interaction to ask for grain shipments from Sicily discussed in the previous dev diary, since if you’ve done so recently, it’ll increase the chances of your counties losing the modifier significantly. https://preview.redd.it/23kzs1p6qj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=79578ce64659910afba7c1ad00d487fa8e1212bb For some historical context, as was also discussed in the previous dev diary, North Africa was increasingly dependent on exports of grain from Sicily in the 11th and 12th centuries. Minor Decisions There are a few minor flavor decisions that can be taken, besides the struggle-related ones discussed in dev diary 2. https://preview.redd.it/c15vsbo7qj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d0b48dc91905071cf00205cc13c0cf2e04fa2c85 First, rulers near Salerno can take the decision to Support the Medical School of Salerno for a cost, which gives a beneficial health. The Admiral’s bridge, impressive back in its day, and, interestingly, was the site of a major battle during Garibaldi’s expedition during the Italian Unification in the 1860s. https://preview.redd.it/szk337d8qj1d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ddf53e8515f90fb935fb73652fbaeb925fdc3862 The decision grants you and Palermo modifiers for a while. 2024.05.20 01:16 Organic-Ad-2 I'm 20F & My Mother Has Gotten $11,000 Out Of Me
It was from scholarship and grant money that I get while enrolled in college. I only turned 20 a bit over a month ago, and I didn't realize how abnormal it was for her to ask so much of me until recently. I live at home (not her house, but grandma's, who's in another state), and at first all I was responsible for was paying the monthly phone bill for us, which I still do.
The $11k has been for various things. It started small, until she expected me to bankroll every time she budgeted poorly or made bad decisions that resulted in not enough money for necessities. Then she expected frivolities.
Before I ever learned of my grants and scholarships, I remember she expected my very first check to go to replacing the car brakes. I was newly 18 then, and it really set the stage in retrospect.
She got into the habit of asking me first for every major or minor thing she couldn't afford. It's the little things that get me, too. Like how we could be at a fast food place, and she'll randomly add on a whole bunch of undiscussed food to the order so it became an argument if I told them to take it off. Or how we were shopping for a new toaster recently, and she put the more expensive one in the basket when she wasn't paying anything.
It snowballed. It became catching us up on the mortgage, which was somehow always two months late by the time she told me. Footing fallen behind water or power bills, and the late fees. Then she was incapacitated for a few months, and it became everything on me. Food, water, bills, etc.
I have an older sibling that lives with us who's been unemployed since January. And up until recently, there'd been two other much older adult relatives in the household. None of them helped.
I'm sitting here looking back at the past several months. Past years, really. I can't believe I thought this was normal for so long. My mother raised us to believe that caring for her and the household at large was our responsibility. But now here I am, over $11,000 later. Realizing my mother never actually thought it was her job to care for me, but expects the utmost care without a single complaint for her.
And I'm so sad. I'll never have a normal mom.
A couple months ago, I cut her off. I chucked a lot of my remaining money in a HYSA, have built my credit to 763, and am enrolling in a personal finance class next semester.
But wow. I'm so sad in the wake of this.

2024.05.19 20:56 SpecialistBag9924 Major educational decision advice!
Hi everyone! I am an undergrad journalism student who recently found out that I am getting paid to get my education now with some new scholarships I got. It has always been my dream to become a foreign correspondent, aka move to Europe and report for publications there or back in the US. My minor is international relations but my university has an accerated master's program where I could get my master's degree in international relations within a year. This would give me more time to save before I graduate, and get a master's degree for free essentially, but it would also force me to stay here for another year. I could spend my summers abroad to make connections before I move. Should I stay and do a master's degree, or should just pack my bags and go after I get my undergraduate degree? Any advice appreciated! Thanks y'all.

2024.05.19 18:46 squintywu1f 38/M wanting to become an engineer, no idea where to start
Hi,
38/M and Deaf (Sharing in case this could be an edge in something like scholarship/grant).
I'm looking for advice on how to start and build a rough path toward becoming an engineer (Exact field undetermined, considering mech or elec, with minor in computer). I imagine it won't be entirely straightforward and life will happen. Start with community college to cover the core classes? CLEP to test it out? Does a prestigious university for engineering matter or is it a piece of paper to show, "hey, I'm an engineer" that matters in the end?
I graduated from a trade school in 2006 with an associate degree in specialized auto repair and business management so I'm entirely unsure if the credit from that will even be transferrable.
I have a lot of experience doing things like auto repair, welding, construction. I saw that you could somehow transfer that into credit, but I'm unclear how this works or if it's even applicable to me.
Thanks and appreciate the thoughts y'all can share.

College Results Accepted - WPI (with Max Scholarship, Half off)
- UW-Madison
- Northeastern (with Max Scholarship, Half off)
- Georgia Tech for CS (Early Action)
- Cornell (Meinig Family Cornell National Scholar)
- Dartmouth
- Duke
- UPenn (Waitlisted M&T)
- Harvard (Waitlisted → Accepted)
- Princeton (Committed)
Waitlisted - UMich (Early Action)
- Vanderbilt
Rejected - USC (lol)
- Yale
- Stanford
- MIT (This one hurt)
Reflections: I'm super grateful and happy with my decisions. I have committed to Princeton, and it definitely is the best fit for me. College results this year were very random, but I couldn’t be more thankful to get into the #1 undergraduate university. I was worried that since most of my application was MIT-related (Research, classes, Letters of Rec, Awards, Activities), other universities would think I was going there and reject me. College results were super random and stressful, but it worked out better than I could have ever imagined. It's funny how I got waitlisted and rejected from all my target schools (Vandy, UMich, USC) but then got into most of my reach schools.
Advice for Future Applicants: Be authentic. There is no formula that gets you in. Sure, you have to do a couple of things like getting good grades and SAT scores and having some unique activities and awards, but especially for Top 10 schools, you just have to be unique and authentic. I didn't have any connections or background (like private school and college counselor) that provided me with opportunities. I was literally the first kid ever from my school to get into Princeton. I was authentic and hardworking, did stuff I enjoyed, and one thing led to another. I also spent a lot of time on essays and my application. 50% of the work is actually doing stuff, and the other 50% is showcasing it in your college application. Also, have balance in life. I had a lot of fun in high school and enjoyed the stuff I did. Live life with no regrets. Feel free to DM me.

2024.05.19 11:47 PalpitationSimilar56 Cambridge offered admission but I’m struggling to find funding
On a whim, I applied to Cambridge University for a postgraduate engineering degree right after graduating from FUNAAB. To my surprise, I got accepted! Unfortunately, funding has become a major hurdle. I've applied to several scholarships within the university but haven't had any luck.
Studying at Cambridge is a dream "japa" route , and the current situation in Nigeria makes this opportunity even more important to me. I’m currently nearing the end of my NYSC service year and I don’t see a future in this country for me as I am definitely in the ideological minority.
I understand this is a long shot, but I'm hoping someone here might be able to offer sponsorship or connect me with potential sponsors.

2024.05.19 07:57 onemangang15 Baseball in the US has become strictly a rich kid sport.
It feels like if you don’t have money, you will fall behind. I coach in a very affluent neighborhood. I have a modest apartment, a very blue collar job, and drive a 20 year old car. I have a semi decent amount of money saved up due to living a frugal life, so I prioritize buying my son higher quality gear without thinking much of it, but we’re not going on any luxury vacations or getting one on one training.
All the kids in the league he plays in get dropped off in luxury SUVs, live in multimillion dollar homes, and routinely go on vacations to beautiful parts of the world. They join tournament teams that play indoors when the weather’s unplayable, which is like October through March, and they also have occasional tournaments in Arizona during the cold months. These teams cost upwards of $10k a year, before travel expenses.
It’s impressive seeing how talented some of the kids have become, but also a lot of these kids have batting cages in their backyards, have former minor leaguers as hitting/pitching coaches, and play in tournaments all year round. And they’re 10.
In the nba and nfl we hear stories of players going from rags to riches that make it a lot more admirable knowing the background of where many of these players come from. But I feel like the stories of American mlb players are all just players who come from families of parents with fill in the blank high earning careers. Obviously the talent to make it to the highest level is worth acknowledging regardless of one’s upbringing, but I do feel like children who come from less wealthy families are put at a huge disadvantage that’s seldom discussed.
It’s a shame because sports can be a great pathway to make it to college for families who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford tuition, but with the increasing cost of youth sports, the kids that are most likely going to be able to become talented enough to earn athletic scholarships are kids who come from families that could pay to have their child attend anyways.

2024.05.19 03:23 nerdeastern Rice??? UW?? Or honestly anywhere, I'm afraid I won't get in
Helloooo, I'm a junior and I'm trying to narrow my college list, and find more realistic target schools. Science and math have always been my weakest points, but I've always challenged myself nonetheless. If you have any college recommendations for me, I'd really appreciate it!!! Sorry this is so long!!
Demographics: M, White/Persian (dual citizen), TN, private school
Hooks: Performing arts
Intended Major(s): Biomedical Engineering, minor in Theater or Astronomy
ACT/SAT/SAT II: ACT - 26 (breakdown-- math 21, science 23, stem 22, eng 27, reading 33) SAT - 1220 (reading/writing-- 660, math-- 460)
UW/W GPA: Freshman GPA: 3.8 Sophomore GPA: 3.3 (medical leave) Junior GPA: 4.1 cumulative on record: 3.55 all weighted, cumulative hasn't been properly calculated (mistake in school's system)
Coursework: Freshman/Sophomore year I completed fine arts training (my academic lineage goes to Michelangelo) DP Eng Lit HL (A), DP AA SL (B), DP Physics HL (C), DP Anthro SL (B) Photography and Theater Production as electives, next year is 3rd year of fine arts training
Awards: National Art Honor Society Tri-M Music Honor Society International Thespian Society Scholastic Art and Writing Awards two honorable mentions National Shakespeare Competition Semi-Finalist 2 school awards in acting First in Odyssey of the Mind Ark State (2 years in a row) First in NHD Regional Comp International Honor Thespian by the end of my senior year
ECs: Assistant Director of a musical (2 shows) Directing (1 show) Tech Crew (lighting, sound, and stage) (4 shows) Acting (in hs) (6 shows, 8 by end of senior year) President of Thespian Troupe Part Time Job Art Studio Apprentice Published 3 times in School Anthology Graphic Designer in Student-Run Magazine Freelance Photography Odyssey of the Mind (3 years, will be coaching next year) President of GSA Club Co-founder of Acting Club Member of Local Astronomical Society CIT at Summer Camp School volunteer (19 hours) a lot more I haven't kept track of
Essays/LORs/Other: I believe my essay will be strong. I plan to write about how art has been my way of expressing myself and understanding the world around me, how I strive to be better at science, and my belief that science and art are the same in the sense that they are both ways of navigating the world, etc.
English teacher-- oh so very strong!!! i love my eng teacher she's so sweet :>
Anthro teacher-- haven't seen it yet, but i'm sure it'll be good, i have a natural spark in anthropology and am very active in his class, my teacher is also my advisor so i talk w him a lot more, he also is writing a recommendation for me for a summer program i'm applying to
Art teacher-- i believe this will be quite strong!
Director A-- this one will be !!great!!, she's known me for 7-8 years
Director B-- this one is a bit of a wildcard, he's a silly guy tho and he likes me so ik he'll say good things about me
Schools:
ED - Rice University
EA - UMich Stony Brook University
RD - Carnegie Mellon* NYU* UCSD CPSU (San Luis Obispo) San Diego State University UW UCD DePaul CU Boulder Michigan State
*I'm very passionate for theater and acting, which is why I want to apply to CMU and NYU for acting. I can't afford to fail if I took that route, which is why I'm only applying to reach schools under that major.
I am aware my college list is too long, I am hoping that'll change. I have safeties, I just didn't include them!! In general, I'm very worried about costs. Even though I'm on a single parent income of 100k (net), I am one of four people being financially supported by that income so that support will be limited in college. My parent's gross income is higher than almost every college's need-based cutoff, so I don't qualify for a lot of financial aid. My academics are also just not cutting it for most merit-based scholarships, as well. As I'm currently standing, I'm not eligible for the majority of large scholarships I've come across. Any help for a more realistic academic+financial bar? Thank you so much!!!

2024.05.18 20:52 Benevolent_Hydra Civic tier list?
Hey all, I’ve been wondering what people’s preferences are on the civics. I’m not an expert by any means so I’m curious what I might be overrating or overlooking. Here’s where I would place the civics just based on my own tastes.
S-
God King-What can I say, I can’t resist those hammers. I’ll often beeline mysticism just to get this up and running faster. I might be better options later game but I feel it just gives such a benefit early game that I can’t justify not taking it asap.
Sacrifice the weak-absolutely busted, use up half the food for minor health and gp penalties. Main reason to go veil imo.
Guardian of nature- needs more work than sac the week but this can make absolutely disgusting cities especially with elves. Plus it’s on the economy slot which I find has less obviously great picks.
A-
Social order- no real need to worry about happiness anymore. Just make some dumb adepts and let them sit, gain xp and tell the people to be happier.
Scholarship- I’m a sucker for science bonuses, and the only downside is war weariness which matters less when I’m sitting at home turtling.
Slavery- using pops to rush is good just like it is in the base game. Plus if you’re being swarmed by barbarians you’ll have plenty of free slave workers to build up infrastructure.
Arete- more hammers from mines are great, and if you go for runes early it can really help early production (especially in a god king capital)
B-
Theocracy- one of two late game picks I usually go for to replace god king, specifically if im going for altar victory since I can priest spam. Other bonuses are meh.
Republic- if im not trying to build the altar I usually go republic. Several decent bonuses and no real downside.
Nationhood- best starter value imo. The unit production helps so much early with all the filthy orcs running around.
Consumption- more money, easy happiness sources, I don’t go for it that much tbh but I don’t feel like I can justify rating it lower.
Caste system- better workers and better specialists for the cost of a manageable happiness penalty. Really nice for altar victory to give you a bit of extra value for the priests.
Agrarianism- I feel like I use this incorrectly because it makes me compulsively build farms only on grassland. If I need farms on plains for city growth it makes me not want to take this even if it means keeping decentralization for an extended period. Still even with my hangups more food is more food.
C-
City states- would have rated this lower a week ago, then I had a run where I had to use it to salvage my economy as illians. Still, feels so bad compared to god king.
Aristocracy- if there’s a civic I underrate it’s this one. I understand how it can be good and I think I just need to play with it more, but the -1 food just feels so bad. I’d rather just get some cottages going most of the time.
Religion- it’s meh. Good for happiness if you’re stacking religion but I feel like by the time you have that option you have other ways to solve that problem.
Apprenticeship- fine if you don’t have better options, the extra xp usually makes up for the unit production malus.
Military state- I’m not a big war guy (I prefer the one unit per tile format to doom stacks) but you can certainly get value out of the extra unit production and I don’t usually care about less culture. Still I won’t beeline it and I can get better options elsewhere.
Conquest- similar thought process to military state, good but not exciting war bonuses. This is however an economy civic which has less options most of the time.
Mercantilism- I have a hard time figuring out when the cash bonus is worth the lack of foreign trade. Not to mention it takes so long to get the tech.
Foreign trade- funny enough it’s easier to figure out when extra trade routes aren’t worth the money. I often play on Erebus maps so you’ll often get stuck with just a few civs near you for most of the games. Overall, unexciting. (Side rant, why the hell is Auric’s favorite civic foreign trade? The man literally has a project to piss everyone off on your way to godhood. )
D-
Pacifism- Imo the worst starting value, I’m just not concerned about great people that much in the early game and I have to suck at building units? No thanks.
Liberty- one free specialist is nice but that’s the only thing I care about. It also comes super late.
Guilds- if I want to make a ton of specialists, it’s rather priests or scientists and I have other civics for those. With other civics allowing for gold to rush buildings and this coming so late in the tech tree there’s no reason to care.
And that’s the list. Like I said I’m no expert player so I’m eager to hear what I’m missing out on.

2024.05.18 18:07 sanagaeh94 open letter for myself
So today, I found out that I had 2 failing grade. And I feeeelt so bad about myself. It altered my life that I was never gonna be enough. It may looks like a kiddo whose ranting for a minor inconveniency in life. But this has cause me so much pain. I had to lose my scholarship, free tuition fee and as well as opportunity that's hard to come by. I also felt guilty that I had to asked my father to fund my college when it's obvious that we have a financial burden.
Right now, I don't now how I'm gonna stand up and face everyone. I know some will look at me with those pitiful eyes of them, saying it will be okay and you'll be able to overcome this. Well honestly I don't know anymore, I feel sh*t/mad about myself. I grow up having trouble about expressing myself. I wish I was braver than anyone, I wish this hurdle is something I could just laugh out in the future.
To my old self, your life here started to crumble once again. And your present self don't know how to stand up and move forward in life.
