Withdrawing Kiwisaver for Hardship - Need help with navigating kiwisaver hardship withdrawal policies
2024.04.29 09:22 topofthesouthbruh Withdrawing Kiwisaver for Hardship - Need help with navigating kiwisaver hardship withdrawal policies
This is a throwaway account. I don't need any other advice other than what I am asking as pulling my kiwisaver is a last resort for me.
I am withdrawing my kiwisaver with Fisher Funds (Formally Kiwi Wealth) due to needing the funds to be able to survive. I work a commission only job which has been good but recently with the economy, interest rates (you name it), recently this has not provided me with a stable income. This is a last resort withdrawing my kiwisaver and I plan to pay it back plus interest to myself when i can afford to later this year. I am also working my ass off in my job, doubling down in order to get some results to get back on track.
I have applied with my kiwisaver provider and provided evidence of my hardship, I requested that all of my kiwisaver apart from the government contributions be withdrawn and paid to me.
The application was approved today but for only 60% of the full kiwisaver balance minus contributions. Now this is a massive help, but it is still not enough to cover everything, even though i have proven i need more.
Their reasoning is that they have given me enough to cover arrears for certain expenses and provided me with 8 weeks worth of money to survive until i make a sale in my job.
It is very frustrating that you can't speak to anyone who is looking after my application.
I am planning on emailing them again with the expenses they have missed. But any advice on the below questions would be appreciated in order to help me get my full balance released to me.
My questions to
PersonalFinanceNZ is:
- Are kiwisaver providers allowed to tell me what budget of my own kiwisaver I require in order to survive?
- Does anyone hear know the best way to respond to my kiwisaver provider in order to get the full amount?
- What are the legal requirements to get the full amount of your kiwisaver released?
If i have missed anything that might help you give me advice, then pleased let me know in the comments and I will answer your questions.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

2024.04.29 08:59 Gaswden Apple Develops AR Smart Glasses, Meta Leads AR+Technology Double Leap to Set Off Industry New Wave
The rivalry between tech giants Apple and Meta isn’t just limited to the VR headset space, as the two sides appear to be battling it out over AR glasses as well.
Apple plans to develop AR smart glasses
In the new issue of Power On, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that Apple is considering whether to develop smart glasses. Among other things, said the device could serve as a stepping stone for Apple to realize its long-term dream of true AR glasses that can be worn all day long.
Reports indicate that engineers at Apple’s Cupertino, California lab recently discussed the possibility of developing smart glasses, similar to Meta’s collaboration with Ray-Ban. According to the report, the smart glasses conceived by Apple could provide audio and it would be able to recognize things in the world around it using artificial intelligence and cameras.
Gurman believes that wearables could help Apple gain new customers, drive growth, and further lock users into the Apple ecosystem lock. So it’s clear that Apple wants to expand the category further beyond the Vision Pro headset that went on sale this year.
Meta’s Fall Conference to Showcase First AR Glasses, Orion
Meanwhile, Meta is reportedly planning to show off a prototype of its AR glasses at its developer conference this fall. Meta has been working on AR glasses for years.
Meta is reportedly planning to show off a prototype of the AR glasses it has been working on for years, code-named “Orion,” at its developer conference this year. The company’s AR team has been asked to demo the AR glasses at the conference, and there’s internal pressure to ensure a high level of performance, people familiar with the matter said.
The product has always been seen by the company as an important part of Meta’s wearables and hardware business, and with Meta having been developing AR glasses for at least eight years and investing tens of billions of dollars in the project, Meta’s true AR glasses are getting closer and closer to being released.
After the competition between Vision Pro and Quest 3, AR glasses will be the new battlefield. Ideally, AR glasses should have the size, weight, and look of regular glasses, with the ability to overlay AR content.
At present, in terms of application scenarios, the development of WiMiAR technology will vigorously support high-potential application scenarios such as new industrialization, AVR, advertising, exhibition, culture and tourism, and meta-universe. With technical advantages in convenience and accuracy scene application, WiMi deeply promotes industrial rejuvenation, accelerates the layout and development of intelligent industry, builds a batch of industrial ecology, and is expected to reshape users’ entertainment, work and life.
It is worth mentioning that the emergence of AI big model technology also provides some new application ideas for the future of AR. Possessing sensitivity to the development of the times, WiMi takes the lead in binding AI and AR in-depth, and with the support of the two technologies, WiMi will be able to meet the needs of users for scene recognition, voice assistants, AI assistants and other auxiliary work, and it can be widely used in various scenarios such as home entertainment, intelligent assistants, education and training, etc., and it is expected to enhance its own technical level and competitiveness in the future.
Conclusion
With the rapid growth of consumer AR products and market demand, the development of the AR industry will usher in a new peak. However, to realize successful application and commercial transformation, it is necessary to carry out a more detailed scene division, and more closely integrate with the products to bring a new use scene.
In conclusion, for the AR industry, to promote the high-quality development of the overall AR industry, it may be necessary to make efforts from both the supply and demand sides in the future. On the demand side, it is crucial to do a good job of user education and marketing; on the supply side, all parties in the industry chain must participate in the construction of the industry, strengthen technological R&D and product innovation, and promote ecological cooperation and sharing.

2024.04.29 08:49 Small-Ground9220 What are the odds of landing a fed job without relevant experience?
I have a friend who wants desperately to land a good paying fed job. Her experience is only in retail. No degree. She’s worked in management at stores like Ross and CVS. She wants to work for FED at a higher level job somewhere in admin work or HR. She is not too good with computers but she is learning. She thinks they will teach her everything she just needs to land the job.
I don’t want to be a negative Nancy but I think she’s wasting her time. She does have schedule A.
Can she realistically land a federal job? Asking because she wants me to help her apply she cannot even submit an application on her own as she again isn’t good with computers. Thoughts?

2024.04.29 08:47 Striccly I feel so much better at my new job as a trans person
In 2021 I was 18 and got a job at my local KFC/Taco Bell. I was fully socially transitioned at this point and was about 4 months on T and pre-op. Outside of the fact that food service jobs generally suck, my manager was very transphobic. Despite the fact that I told him my name and pronouns several times he simply refused to use them. I was early on in my transition but it was no excuse for the misgendering and deadnaming. I got gendered correctly more often by customers than my own coworkers (though I wore a hat and facemask all day so it helped me pass.) It got so bad that I quit with no notice a month after getting hired.
Fast forward to now, I'm 21, almost 4 years on T and 2 years post top surgery, and I got a job at my local Sally Beauty supply because I knew several queer people who worked there. I had some issues with my application because I used my actual name and not my deadname in places I wasn't supposed to but my current manager was so sweet and said she would immediately change my name in the system to my true name once it got sorted out. Ive been working here for about a week now and guys. omg. I thrive here. I'm in my element (been dyeing my hair for years and know a lot about cosmetics) and most importantly I'm always recognized as me. My true name shows up on the register when I ring up customers, I get "Thank you sir," "Hey man, can you help me find..." "Excuse me young man, what would you recommend for..." constantly, and all my coworkers know me as me. I rarely if ever get misgendered and never get deadnamed. Plus the pay is great for part time, I get access to a 401k and benefits even at part time, and I get to learn about and experience a lot of new cosmetic stuff (for my transmascs with blonde/thin facial hair, Bigen EZ Color for Men, yw 😉)
I can see myself working here for a long time, maybe even getting a raise or moving to a different Sally's. I mostly got this job so I can save up to move out of my parent's place, but I never expected to get so attached to it. My ultimate life goal isn't attatched to my career so I wouldn't really care where I worked or what I did, but damn, it really pays to have a job where you get to be you.

2024.04.29 08:47 mercurypool Is my portfoli doing more harm than good when applying to jobs?
I worked as a junior full stack developer for 2 years but got laid off last month. I know the market is shit for jr devs right now so I'm not that surprised I haven't gotten any interviews after >200 applications.
A former mentor of mine recommended I work on a side project to showcase my skills so I built a portfolio. I know
my portfolio is not great, I've only been working on it for a few weeks, but it does have a couple functional full stack projects linked; the projects are not flushed out though. So I am not a web designer and I know my projects are not that complex so I'm worried that showing them makes me look worse than just giving my resume/linkedin. Can anyone with experience in hiring give me some idea of how far off I am? Would I look better with simply my resume or would it help to link my portfolio?
For context, I'm applying to full stack/front-end jobs, I'm not freelancing or applying to any jobs that require web design skills.
Thanks!

2024.04.29 08:30 MissMoxie2004 Something he did that I can’t make sense of
Hello everyone. I got out of an abusive relationship years ago, but lately I’ve been trying to write it all down so anyone who asks can read about it. I also can’t shake the feeling that someday I’ll be talking to Lester Holt about him.
So here’s something that I can’t make sense of. I’ve been told I need to ‘check my privilege’ when I get too insistent about it. My abuser seemed to use his poverty growing up as an excuse for some things. But I don’t see how some of the problems he had were the consequences of poverty. I also don’t see how poverty prevented them from troubleshooting their problems. I’ll give a few examples.
- He was an honors student in high school. But he was threatened with suspension because he stunk. When I asked why he went to school stinking he blamed his poverty. He explained how there wasn’t enough hot water in the morning for everyone to get a shower. The cat peed on the laundry. For a long time he didn’t have deodorant and when he FINALLY managed to get a three pack from the dollar store before he had a chance to use it his stepbrothers used it. (One application for each boy ONCE.)
True to form he’d throw a tantrum if I asked questions like “so if the deodorant was a three pack what happened to the rest of it after your stepbrothers used it ONCE?” “Why don’t you take a shower in the evening if you’re running out of hot water every morning?” “Why don’t you just cold shower, or boil water and wash your smelly parts?“ “Why didn’t you get in the habit of putting the laundry away as soon as it’s clean BEFORE the cat had a chance to pee on it?” (They were certainly astute enough to keep the cat out of the bedrooms because of his peeing.) “How often did the cat pee on the laundry?” “Why didn’t you rehome the cat if his peeing was such a problem?”
Also his high school is in an economically repressed area. So the majority of his classmates were in the same socioeconomic status he was. Their teachers understood this. But he was the only one who had this problem.
- He whined that his family had to blow the bank on drying their clothes at a laundromat. They had a washer and dryer at home, but the dryer was missing a coupling that connected to the dryer duct making it unusable.
The coupling in question would have cost $12 at Home Depot and taken 30 minutes to install. They couldn’t do this fix because they were ‘poor.’ HOWEVER they had money to go to the movies and go to SciFi conventions and stuff like that. ONCE I suggested that his parents should miss A sci-fi convention and buy the coupling. He threw such a tantrum calling me an ‘elitist.’
- His sister got married in a dining hall under their church. But the dining hall was FILTHY. Garbage and dirt EVERYWHERE. When I asked why the answer was “we can’t afford a nice venue.” He of course accused me of being an elitist when I pointed out that it doesn’t cost money to put garbage in a bag and take it to the dumpster. And the church certainly had custodial supplies. The floor could have been mopped.
I’m not completely ignorant when it comes to being poor. I was laid off from my job within a short amount of time from when my husband went blind. So my pin money job became our only income. I’m no stranger to lack of utilities. We went three New England winters with no heat or hot water and we never left the house stinking. We sure as hell did not have the money to even go to the movies, let alone a sci-fi convention. Let alone SEVERAL per year.
Am I missing something? Do I need to check my privilege?

2024.04.29 08:27 Beneficial_Shock_409 I did some research to find out if the Bible supports slavery; it does
Reader's Note: Feel free to read this in any order that suits you. Start from the introduction, the conclusion, or jump to any section you're interested in. Also, if you are going make a counter argument, please read the entire document as I may have already addressed or talked about your argument. Also, I may address a counter argument before or after you read the "Counterarguments" section. When I was writing this I was just sort of taking notes as I went and not organizing anything since I didn't think about sharing it with anyone. I only somewhat organized this and did so pretty quickly so don't expect this to be super well organized. I could have elaborated more, used different analogies, etc.
Intro
The Bible contains many references to slavery, which was a common practice in antiquity. Biblical texts outline sources and the legal status of slaves, economic roles of slavery, types of slavery, and debt slavery, which thoroughly explain the institution of slavery in Israel in antiquity.
Examples of Bible verses talking about slavery
I will use these 6 verses repeatedly in multiple examples:
- Leviticus 25:44–46: 44 "However, you may purchase male and female slaves from among the nations around you. 45 You may also purchase the children of temporary residents who live among you, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, 46 passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat them as slaves, but you must never treat your fellow Israelites this way."
Context: This passage is part of the laws given to the Israelites regarding the Year of Jubilee which was a time of rest and release for the land and its people every fifty years. It specifies the conditions in which Israelites could own slaves and distinguishes between fellow Israelites and non-Israelites. Literal and legal.
- Exodus 21:2–6: 2 "If you buy a Hebrew slave, he may serve for no more than six years. Set him free in the seventh year, and he will owe you nothing for his freedom. 3 If he was single when he became your slave, he shall leave single. But if he was married before he became a slave, then his wife."
Context: These verses are part of a larger set of laws given shortly after the Ten Commandments, focusing on the rights and treatment of Hebrew slaves. It details the procedure for releasing a Hebrew slave after six years of service. Literal and legal.
- Luke 12:47–48: 47 "And a servant who knows what the master wants, but isn't prepared and doesn't carry out those instructions, will be severely punished. 48 But someone who does not know, and then does something wrong, will be punished only lightly. When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required.
Context: This passage is from a parable spoken by Jesus, emphasizing the importance of being ready and faithful in service to God. It uses the analogy of a servant and master to illustrate accountability and the consequences of knowing versus not knowing the master's will. Metaphorical and spiritual.
- 1 Timothy 6:1–2: 1 All slaves should show full respect for their masters so they will not bring shame on the name of God and his teaching. 2 If the masters are believers, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. Those slaves should work all the harder because their efforts are helping other believers who are well loved.
Context: These instructions are given by Paul in a letter to Timothy, guiding how Christians including those who are slaves should conduct themselves to uphold the teachings of Christianity. Literal, with a spiritual application.
- Ephesians 6:5: "Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ."
Context: Part of Paul's letter to the Ephesians, this verse is included in a section that gives household codes for Christians, addressing relationships between husbands and wives, children and parents, and slaves and masters. Literal, with a spiritual application.
- Exodus 21:20–21: 20 When a man strikes his slave, male or female, with a rod and the slave dies under his hand, he shall be avenged. 21 But if the slave survives a day or two, he is not to be avenged, for the slave is his money.
Context: This is also part of the Mosaic Law, given by God to Moses to relay to the Israelites regarding the treatment of slaves. It specifically talks about the consequences for a master who physically harms a slave distinguishing between outcomes that lead to the slave's death versus survival. Literal and legal.
Questions:
- What is slavery?
Slavery is "The ownership of a person as property, especially in regards to their labor." Slavery typically involves compulsory work with the slave's location of work and residence dictated by the party that holds them in bondage. For most of human history slavery has been a feature of civilization and legal in most societies. Historically, enslavement could happen as a result of breaking the law, becoming indebted, suffering a military defeat, or exploitation for cheaper labor; other forms of slavery were instituted along demographic lines such as race and sex.
Types of slavery:
- Bondage/ Debt Slavery: When a person is forced to work to pay off a debt. They may be kept in enslavement for life or until debt is paid.
- Voluntary Slavery: When a person voluntarily enters into slavery to pay a debt or earn money due to poverty.
- Forced Labor: When a person is made to work against their will, often under the threat of violence or punishment.
- Marriage slavery: People are forced into marriage against their will.
- Blood slavery: Being born into slavery.
- What specific types of slavery are talked about in the bible?
Both forced labor "However, you may purchase male and female slaves from among the nations around you. 45 You may also purchase the children of temporary residents who live among you, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property," and debt slavery "If you buy a Hebrew slave, he may serve for no more than six years. Set him free in the seventh year, and he will owe you nothing for his freedom" were mainly talked about and acceptable in the Bible. Blood slavery was also allowed "You may also purchase the children of temporary residents who live among you, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property."
- Does the Bible support modern slavery?
Passages like Ephesians 6:5 which say "Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ." And Exodus 21:20–21 which say "When a man strikes his slave, male or female, with a rod and the slave dies under his hand, he shall be avenged. 21 But if the slave survives a day or two, he is not to be avenged, for the slave is his money." Phrases like "for the slave is his money" and "just as you would obey Christ" are reminiscent of the obedience expected and punishments given in 19th century/modern slavery. I can't find any moral rationale for passages such as Exodus 21:20-21, which allow beating a person nearly to death without consequence, as long as the victim survives a couple of days. This is justified on the grounds that "the slave is his money," treating human beings merely as property (Similar to 19th century slavery). Also as I said earlier, this passage is part of the Mosaic Law, given by God to Moses to relay to the Israelites. This passage a literal statement within the context of Mosaic Law. It provides specific legal regulations for the Israelites and is not presented as an analogy, spiritual, or metaphorical message.
- Does the Bible ever condemn slavery?
There is no passage anywhere in the Bible which outright condemns slavery/Say something similar to "Thou shalt not kill". Yet, it does outright condemn things like murder, theft, etc. It only talks about what to do if you do have slaves but doesn't say it's wrong. This is a direct contradiction with Christian principles advocated for in the Bible such as:
- Matthew 22:39 - "And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" How can you love your neighbor when you can beat them to near death and own them as property?
- James 2:8-9 - "If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, 'Love your neighbor as yourself,' you are doing right. But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers." This passage talks about the sinfulness of treating people unequally, which is obviously contradictory to the hierarchical relationship inherent in slavery.
Bible verses which seemingly condemn slavery
While the Bible doesn't outright say slavery was bad, some may think it implies it because of verses like:
- Leviticus 22:11: "But if a priest buys a slave with money, or if slaves are born in his household, they may eat his food." "buys." Why is this allowed when it goes against Christian principles? Verses like Galatians 3:28 clearly don't allow this.
- Job 31:13-15: "If I have denied justice to any of my servants, whether male or female, when they had a grievance against me, 14 what will I do when God confronts me? What will I answer when called to account? 15 Did not he who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us both within our mothers?" "denied justice" could literally just mean something like going too far in the beating of a slave/servant Exodus 21:20–21 Its not specified what this "denied justice" is referring to.
- Deuteronomy 24:14-15: "Do not take advantage of a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether that worker is a fellow Israelite or a foreigner residing in one of your towns. Pay them their wages each day before sunset, because they are poor and are counting on it. Otherwise they may cry to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin." Its not clear if this refers to you simply reaching out to someone and actually hiring (Meaning you don't own them since I wouldn't consider someone who owns a slave as having "Hired" them. Hired usually implies you don't own them as property. It could just mean that they work for you because they are poor (If this is the case this is no condemnation of slavery since it would mean they aren't a slave) However, if this is talking about voluntary slavery for example because they need money (I guess sure, here we can say they were "hired"), then all it means is you must pay the slave. It doesn't specify if you can hit the slave or how you can treat them during the duration of the slavery (using other verses - Exodus 21:20–21 we can assume you could probably beat the slave).
- Malachi 3:5: "So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners among you of justice, but do not fear me," says the LORD Almighty. "defraud laborers of their wages" What I said about Deuteronomy 24:14-15 applies here as well. Only talking about paying a slave. This also obviously only applies to slaves who even get paid to begin with.
- Exodus 21:16 - "He who kidnaps a man and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, shall surely be put to death." This has nothing to do with slavery since its talking about kidnaping. Although "or if he is found in his hand" could mean being a slave. The problem is that its only seen as bad because the slave was kidnapped not because they are a literal slave that can be treated as property.
- Galatians 3:28: "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Some may say this verse is a direct condemnation of slavery since it mentions unity and equality among all believers in Christ, regardless of their social status or identity. However, it does not explicitly prohibit slavery. Because of the use of the phrase "For you are all one in Christ" I think its more reasonable to assume this only refers to spiritual equality since it never directly addresses or outlaws the physical practice of slavery. This is even more notable when compared with other explicit biblical commandments, such as "Thou shalt not kill" (Exodus 20:13 and Deuteronomy 5:17), which clearly forbid certain actions. The fact that there is no unequivocal commandment against slavery in a book which is meant to tell you what's right and wrong says a lot. Mix this in with explicit instructions found in other verses on the treatment of slaves and the absence of a direct prohibition against the practice of slavery, it is obvious that the Bible permits slavery within its social and legal frameworks. Slavery was common back then however the problem is that bible accepts that and never condemns it. It would be like if murder was wide spread so the bible never condemned it and told you how to commit it.
Counterarguments
- Slavery was different back then
No it wasn't. This is clearly evident by the way slaves were talked about. When the Bible says things like "for the slave is his money" "severely punished" (Remember, Exodus 21:20–21 allows beating a person nearly to death without consequence, as long as the victim survives a couple of days.) "just as you would obey Christ" it sounds a lot like the obedience expected and punishments given in 19th century/modern slavery. When you hear things like this its clear slavery in the Bible was very similar to 19th century slavery in which humans beings were treated as merely property just with some extra restrictions.
- Even if the bible doesn't condemn slavery it doesn't mean it supports it
Imagine if the Bible never told you murder was bad and in fact told you how to participate in it. "You may only stab the legs and arms, never the heart." Its the exact same with slavery. By not condemning it and instead offering instructions on participation, it essentially amounts to support. Or else I don't know why it talks so much about buying, owning, and beating slaves.
- The use of "bondsmen" in the literal language is not a slave.
In Hebrew, the original language of the Old Testament, the word for "slave" initially meant "Bondsmen". The term 'ebhedh,' commonly found in the Old Testament, translates to "the ordinary slave," whether foreign (e.g., Genesis 43:18; 44:9,33; Leviticus 25:44,46) or Hebrew (e.g., Leviticus 25:42; 2 Kings 4:1). Its like calling a car an "Automobile." Different word same meaning. Also, some people say this means debt slaves. However even if they were debt slaves, they were still slaves and could be treated as such. I don't see how being a debt slave makes anything better. For servant which is "a person who performs duties for others, especially a person employed in a house on domestic duties" it could indeed refer to something other the slavery. However judging off the contexts in which this word is often used, its usually indicative of actual slavery (for example replace the word "slave" with servant here Leviticus 25:44–46).
- Being a debt slave is better then being poor
This is offering a horrible alternative for another horrible alternative. In fact, being poor may have been better. Debt slavery removes your control over your own life. You're forced to work to pay off the debt, probably under harsh conditions and with little to no control over your work. That's like if I saved someone from burning alive (poverty) by drowning them (Debt slavery).
- You can have slaves Ethically
How can you have slaves ethically when they are your property, you own them, can beat them till near death, and can sell them? just the fact alone the Bible allows for you to own a person is obviously contradictory to other passages (James 2:8-9).
- Interpretations vary
Sure, however they vary mostly on metaphorical verses. They don't however vary as much for something like "Thou shalt not kill" do they? Leviticus 25:44–46 Exodus 21:2–6 Exodus 21:20–21
- It was common back then/Historical context
Just because it was common doesn't make it right. Does the bible bend to what is socially acceptable even if its morally wrong and goes against all of gods principles? Doesn't god surpass humans in knowledge as well as morality? God doesn't support slavery according to principles yet there are passages (Exodus 21:20–21) where god himself directly explains how to manage slaves and definitely not ethically. Imagine if god never condemned murder but actively told people how to properly murder someone.
- Reddit counter argument I found to Exodus Exodus 21:20–21:
This verse is always ripped from it's context because it can be made to sound like permission to beat a slave "When men quarrel and one strikes the other with a stone or with his fist and the man does not die but takes to his bed, then if the man rises again and walks outdoors with his staff, he who struck him shall be clear; only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall have him thoroughly healed. Exodus 21:18-19
What is happening here is a law exists that requires that if people fight and one is caused to be injured, that the offender pays for the time the other can't work. V20 is an exception since the slaves work is already for the benefit of the owner. The time lost is already at the cost of the owner. So no payment needs to be made.
Also, other laws are still in affect. As we can see in v20 if the slave dies he is to be avenged.
Also, if the slave is injured in a permanent way such as losing a tooth, he is likely to go free as we can see just a few verses later
"When a man strikes the eye of his slave, male or female, and destroys it, he shall let the slave go free because of his eye. If he knocks out the tooth of his slave, male or female, he shall let the slave go free because of his tooth. Exodus 21:26-27
So this verse is in no way permission to beat a slave as it is often claimed."
My Counter Argument: This context does NOT disprove that Exodus 21:20-21 allows for the beating of a slave but just talks about how the laws sought to regulate behavior including how slaves should be treated by creating certain restrictions and penalties. Regardless of the extra context, when we combine Exodus 21:20-21 in light of the surrounding verses, it's clear that while yes, there was a legal framework that acknowledged the value of a slave's life (by requiring the avenging of a slave's death) it also shows a clear societal hierarchy where slaves were regarded as property. "If the slave survives a day or two, he is not to be avenged, for the slave is his money" obviously this implies a degree of leniency towards the owner's actions, again reflecting that slave-owner relationship. These laws attempt to balance the interests of slave owners with certain protections for slaves, albeit its still within a system that inherently lacked equality. The context only sets forth the conditions under which physical discipline could occur, alongside the penalties or lack thereof, depending on the outcome of such actions. This argument attempts to frame the passage as merely a legal technicality where it doesn't support slaves being beat. However the fact still remains that a slave owner could beat their slave with enough severity to necessitate days of recovery without significant consequence. Again, when you never condemn something even if it obviously goes against all your morals, it says a lot. You have permission to beat your slave, just to an extend (Near death) Also, once again, lets not forget that this verse is part of the Mosaic Law, given by God himself to Moses to relay to the Israelites regarding the treatment of slaves.
Conclusion
The Bible not only never condemns slavery, but also supports it.
When you consider the prevalence of slavery in biblical times and its direct contradiction with the core moral teachings of the Bible you would expect it to be littered with passages unequivocally condemning such a widely recognized evil practice. But instead, apart from never denouncing slavery, the Bible provides detailed instructions on managing and participating in it.
When juxtaposed with the Bible's explicit commandments against other immoral acts, this silence on slavery is very telling.
(I like murder analogy a lot) If the Bible never condemned murder but, instead, provided guidelines for permissible types of killing, we'd rightly conclude it condones violence. The same logic applies to slavery.

2024.04.29 08:13 Particular_Shake_624 H2A employee
I'm an H2A employee in Arizona and things seemingly aren't going to play out as was agreed in my contract with my employer. I've been in Arizona for around 2 weeks and there has been a lot of negative talk on the grounds about the employer and let's say, their means of business.
My concern is that we have a document, let's call it a contract that stipulates a downtime of +/- 3 weeks in order to get our social security documents sorted and an applicable licenses. I am employed as a machinist meaning, I drive trucks and tractors.
I am not sure I understand this correctly but the H2A law stipulates that if we agree to X amount of hours and there is a shortfall of hours worked, the employer still needs to pay us for this missing hours, I.e. if we agree on 40 hours for a week and I'm only able to work 30, the employee is obligated by law to compensate me for the shortfall of 10 hours including the 30 worked.
Also, my employer requires me to obtain my CDL driver's permit but has stipulated in the contract that if I should leave my employment with the employer before my contract is completed, they can withhold a penalty fee in lieu of my training. The H2A law again, provides a section where it states that an H2A employer isn't able to withhold any unlawful deductions, especially if it's related to job requirements such as tools and/or training.
My native language isn't English but I believe to have a good understanding of the language, however, if there are any knowledgeable people around that can guide me, it would be great.

2024.04.29 08:03 crazymonkeystyle Job Application Advice
I am in a bit of a pickle currently. My current position i got because my last boss knew my current boss, so moving from Sweden to Switzerland wasn't an issue.
Now my boss resigned and things in the company have been going downhill for a while now, so i'm also aiming for a change. The issue is: i don't know how to properly apply in "swiss" standard (what is required? Do i need to put my Bewilligung on the CV, what about reference letters, how elaborate does the cover letter have to be, are references (phone numbers & email) a must?). I am aiming for a team lead/ lower management position in my field of expertise, but i'm lacking the network in Switzerland.
I speak German and English fluently, but my industry also requires French and Italian (at least on job openings, not sure if this is a requirement or an ideal).
Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

2024.04.29 07:53 MariMar14 Difficulty with job interviews
I was diagnosed at eighteen right at the end of my first year in college and, though i will say my field is a lot more open to neurodiversity, i still think i fall behind in this aspext compared to neurotypical people.
So i wanna know, How do you guys navigate job interviews? I find myself writing a - what i think sounds like- perfect answers for all the questions i can find and honeatly a whole script for any mishap i can think of and still i can tell it was not what they wanted to hear because right after or they lose interest, or the call ends quickly, or they just straight up tell me that.
The main problem i keep identifying here is that i think i've said exactly what they feedbacked to me.
One time the question was about what motivates me and i said that 1 future/inovation because i sense endless possibilities in thw future and i want to take active part in it by helping shape and execute inovation that will impact it and that i was very interested in the cloud computing and how it connects to the application they made and 2 social causes because i'm on the spectrum and i think it's important to give back like the company does by funding parathletes' trainings and sponsoring them (both of these were deeply reflected by the company's actions) Then the interviewr said i was not a great fit because though i had the skills needed, my motivation wasn't valid for this position because this wasn't a place for social stuff. I took it, even if i didn't agree.
Another time i told the interviewer a whole day earlier that i was more used to a programming language that was not the main one used in the company and asked if i could do the coding in this one, he said it was no problem at all and after the interview said i should've specified i wasn't going to use the main language so i could save us the trouble.
I swear I'm trying but i find myself lacking here, can anyone share their stories and how if at all you have overcome it.

2024.04.29 07:53 Cfout- Foreign language requirements are really holding me back…
I graduated high-school last year, with hardly a care in the world about college. I went to a pretty rural highschool and neither of my parents have gone to college so I’ve had very little guidance in this regard. I had applied to a few universities, some of which being local colleges that friends of mine currently attend.
But I was rejected from all of them, i didn’t think much of it. “I’ll just take a gap year and get a job in the meantime” and that’s exactly what I did, until received my second wave of rejection letters recently.
All 5 schools I applied to this year rejected me… for reference, I got pretty good grades, apart from COVID online school, my school handled that poorly and it was a common complaint among my friends. I’m an Honnor student and I got an SAT score in the 1300s, but I still can’t manage to get into a state or even local university?
I decided to get in contact with the admissions office of my reach school, UT Austin. And their explanation was that they’d denied my application because I lacked any foreign language credits. And when I looked at the other schools I applied to, they all had this requirement as well. My highschool counselor told me it wouldn’t be a big deal and i wouldn’t need them for most schools, guess I should’ve fact checked her on that.
My question now is. What do I do? I can’t get into any half decent schools without foreign language credits and I don’t know how to solve this...

2024.04.29 07:48 Creepy_Principle_611 [Seeking Advice] PhD position in Germany
Hi!
I reached out by email to a professor in Germany showing that I am interested in pursuing a PhD under his supervision, he informed me of a vacancy for one student with a specific topic, I did an interview, and it went positively.
However, I noticed that 2 days after the interview, a new job posting was published on the university website for the same position, should I apply for this position again through the website (I haven't applied yet, I sent him my documents via email before I knew about the position)? Or my previous emails with him are considered a sufficient application?
Many thanks

2024.04.29 07:44 CrabWonderful5311 Buying my new boss a bottle appropriate?
I told my old boss I wanted to move out of state and he basically got me an interview setup for when I got to my new location. He said they’re super close when they worked together and I’m basically hired, just have to follow the process. The company I wanted work for re opened the applications for me so I can apply and the guy already welcomed me to the company before the interview. My question is, my old boss who got me the job said I should get his mentomy new boss a bottle of McAllan 12 sherry oak - as a thank you for the opportunity (and since that’s this favorite bottle apparently). I don’t want to be a duck rider but he pretty much only hired me because of my old bosses referral and nothing else.
