Season 10 second half review

2024.05.13 20:14 Sardonic-Airhead Season 10 second half review

Before I go on my Eli & Eclare rant that will probably be just as long as it was last time let’s get the other stuff out the way first…
Alli Bhandari you will always be famous I’m so sorry for everything you go through I just wanna give you a hug and some freedom. Her file was large and she was wildin at some point but let’s be truthful, Alli being in the boiler room was a moment of weakness (that didn’t even come to fruition) what Bianca & Drew did in the boiler room was a moment of character. Those scum should be the LAST to have ANYTHING to say about ANYBODY!!!!! Alli I really want healing for you girl, no matter what she does her parents treat her with some much disdain and disappointment and anger and resentment and disrespect and want to be surprised when Alli wants to leave? Yeah, go to hell. If I was her I’m no contact at 18. Anyways..
I think the saddest thing about alli’s runway arc was that she and Sav were both right in their argument but due to all the history it was all just too complicated and made so much more so by the added pressures and the runway itself. They love each other so deeply.
MY SAVY J HEARTTTTTTTTT 💔💔 ughhh I wish they would’ve made it, sav stood up to his parents for her, supported her, understood her, forgave her, like he really stepped up and was her man. But I will say Holly J not feeling it does feel in character, she’s someone who’s always gonna want more. And idk maybe… if only Sav could be the man he was for Holly J, for Anya, then we would be living in a proper society. But the fact of the matter is as much as I love Anya, I don’t think Sav actually respects her. I know he loved her but I think what he liked in Holly J was her ambition and her determination and strong will, all being coupled with her looks, humor, and compassion. She had an arc, she feels like a complete person who’s really growing and I think Sav maybe appreciated Holly J more because he could clearly see how much she asserted what she wanted for herself and her future and it’s a trait he’s growing but at the moment was lacking and it’s really what he wants for himself, I think he just admired Holly J more as a person because of what she stood for as a person. And that’s kinda something Anya’s always been missing, which is why neither ship could ever work. They connect, but they don’t truly compliment one another. It’s sad because the chemistry for both ships is absolutely there.
Riley wasn’t as bad as I remember, I don’t dislike him he’s just neutral to me now but he’s still on the lower side for me. I’ve chocked up his violent streak to roid rage and called it a day 💀
Also literally don’t bring Dr*w up to me at alll like bye
Degrassi has a nerd problem. Their interesting characters usually come in the form of nerdy archetypes at least to me. : Wesley, Liberty, Toby, Claire, Alli, Conner, all either become completely about something entirely different (Clare, Alli, Liberty, Conner) or fall off the face of the earth with zero explanation (Toby, Wesley) and it’s like hello???? Give me my nerdy main and let them carry stories and finish their nerdy arcs pls thank you!!! Only person I can say starts and ends as someone with decent screentime where their nerdiness or intellect is one of their main storylines still is Conner, and even he feels slightly underused at times.
Bro everyone’s always taking about “you told me to play BASKETBALL” but no one ever talks about Jenna’s delivery to set up that iconic line. “WHERE’S the BABY suppOSED TA’ SLEEP?!?!” Like I replayed that scene like 8 times just dying 🤣🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭😭😩😩😩😩😂😂😂😂💀💀💀💀💀
Speaking of Jenna, two things : her hating Bianca for being a boyfriend stealer while being pregnant with KC’s baby is laughable, don’t piss me off 💀
Second thing : GOODBYE WHITE HORSE GOODBYE BRAVE KNIGHTTTT ok that’s it
Love that Fiona got some help and won her trial , love this for her so bad.
I like characters like Dave, Anya & Holly J whose flaws and virtues both feel consistent with their character. Like Dave’s desire to be cool resulting in him tazing Wesley was an asshole thing to do, and it was wild, but also, it tracks? So does Dave being there for his friends he’s just a good, well written character regardless of him being flawed. It feels natural. I compare this to Anya & Holly J because they’re similar . Like, I can still see glimpses of young Holly J in her wit, some of her dialogue and decisions are consistent with her more ruthless previous personality but it comes from a different place now. She feels like a changed and grown person and not a completely different character with. A whole new personality. She’s just older and wiser now. Anya hasn’t been through as much change but her personality and decisions feel very Anya to me whether I agree with what she’s doing or not. Unlike some other characters i’ll talk about later ( cough CLARE cough )
Adam is a deeply insecure person and the way he reacts to Drew flirting with Fiona after he sets them up is very psychotic to me because wtf did you think was gonna happen??? Just very dramatic, and the way he acts when interested in someone it’s like early signs of the same problems he eventually has with Becky before his death it makes me sad they never really attempted to therapize this man. It’s kind of the same issue I had with Toby like this man is very clearly troubled and no one is doing anything.. for why????? It’s also how he got sucked up in the Fitz drama in S10 part 1, like no one around him sees these signs, oh I know why, because his FREINDS CLARE AND ELI ONLY THINK OF THEMSELVES!!! Ok it’s time for the Eclare rant takes massive breath
ELI’S RED FLAGS COULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN REDDER, AND CLARE LITERALLY IGNORES THEM ALL UNTIL THE VERY END AND ITS LIKE GIRL IM GLAD YOU WERE ABLE TO WAKE UP BUT IMMA NEED YOU TO MAKE HASTE NEXT TIME BC WTF!!!!!
first of all, Clare starting the second half of season 10 by saying “the knife fight wasn’t Eli’s fault, Fitz was a psycho” and standing on that after being the only one with any self awareness previously and calling out how Eli not only perpetuated but continued the cycle of violence before it went to far is annoying and almost a little inconsistent with her character. Season 8, 9 & even the first half of season 10 Clare would never have just been so openly blind to all this man’s MANY MANY problems and it’s this change to her character that allowed things to get so out of hand by the end of the season. Eli also refusing to take 0 accountability for being the one who POISONED A MAN and expects everyone to believe a knife was pulled on him for no reason is so unbelievably annoying and disgusting. He’s manipulative as hell almost the entire season with all his little revenge plans and schemes to win Clare’s affection. Yeah, Fitz was wrong but Eli was wrong too. 2 wrongs don’t make a right, and you’d think someone like Clare who has been known to point that out and uphold good morals would … you know… point that out and uphold good morals??!? I’m not gonna forget what all you did Eli, THE NORTH REMEMBERS!!!!! PEPPERIDGE FARM REMEMBERS!!!!!!
I think they did an amazing job tho of showing you all the good of eli’s personality and making you genuinely feel empathy for his character and making him and Clare rootable while also showing you the bad and all the growing red flags pretty constantly in a way that doesn’t discount or contradict their connection or his character growth but works in tandem and shows the duality of human nature. Is Eli sweet, thoughtful, loyal, smart, clever, accepting, loving, but troubled and just trying his best? Yes! But is he also super possessive, manipulative, temperamental, arrogant, obsessed with death, not over Julia, and clearly a threat to himself and others around him who constantly cries for help while simultaneously denying that help? Also yes! Truly a complex and multifaceted character who you’re completely justified in loving or hating. Craig walked so Eli could run.
But also, this man wrote a story about killing you and drinking your blood, wants to take you away alone for two days IN HIS HEARSE on the anniversary of his ex’s death who he feels like he “killed” while dressed as the parader from My Chemical Romance “welcome to the black parade” album and then crashed a car while laughing hysterically knowing you were listening after you asked for space… idk Clare I think it’s time to switch schools girl…… i- I don’t know how you could ever come back from something like that like…. Help wanted?!
Also does Eli kind of look like that emo whooville boy from the Lorax to anyone else 💀 whenever he tries to intimidate Fitz I’m like no one is afraid of you sir. What are you gonna do? Speak for the trees? But then I remember he’d probably frame you for arson, or poison you or something instead
Season ranks 3 = 10 > 2 > 8 > 9 > 6 > 5 > 4 > 7 > 1

2024.05.13 19:00 hiroshiokami Plex not recognizing one movie!

Kinda losing my mind over here trying to figure out what i have going on.
I have one movie "The Upside (2019)" that no matter what i do plex just doesn't want to recognize and import. I've tried .avi's, .mp4's, .mkv's... The files play fine locally on my computer, but when they get placed in the Library Folder on my Ubuntu file share, plex scans the folder and doesn't seem to pick it up. I've tried resetting the permissions on the folder and file recursively, I've tried deleting the folder and files and starting from scratch...
Looking at the log files, i get the following:
Line 32593: May 13, 2024 09:16:47.031 [126499199433528] VERBOSE - Adding subdirectory for scanner: "/media/GFZMDVault/GFZPlex/Movies/The Upside (2019)"

I know the "didn't exist, can't skip" usually results in a permissions issue - which is why i went back and reset everything, restarted, reset, restarted... tried changing permissions, restarted, deleted file tried again, deleted folder and file tried again... tried different types of files, etc.
Other files being imported work fine, this seems to be the only one that is having issues.
Should I be looking somewhere else? Am i missing something? Really not sure where to look from here.

2024.05.13 14:28 LeadingTrifle4924 My map doesn't want to compile properly can anyone please help I'm new in the community. ):

When I compile in fast, full, or final compile I get the same error:

Operator Error: Event (null): CSosOperatorSpeakers Error: Operator volume_fan_mult, unknown sound operator attribute __move_to_end Error: Operator volume_fan_mult, unknown sound operator attribute __move_to_end Operator Error: Event (null): CSosOperatorSpeakers Error: Operator volume_fan_scale, unknown sound operator attribute __move_to_end Error: Operator volume_fan_scale, unknown sound operator attribute __move_to_end
Although I can launch the map after fast compile it doesn't want to launch in full compile. At the end of the compile it tells me:
Unable to run Vrad3. Light mapper didn't return valid triangles: failing. Map build FAILED. [FAIL]
and also:
ERROR: 6 compiled, 1 failed, 1 skipped, 0m:29s

If it's necessary here's the full compile log:

2024.05.13 09:18 Tasty-Economics3614 ~ 2012 Clearview Horizon Psychiatrist, SANDPOINT IDAHO

Saw students at Monarch too. Saw us each every 2 weeks. Several students per each day they took students to see her. $ Connected to Kootenai Behavioral Hospital
I was put on so many medications. All of us at Clearview Girls Academy / Clearview Horizon were required to be ut on medication. There was one girl whos parents did not want her on meds at all costs to she was the only one that was not. I had severe mental issues while there and physical symptoms. One of the worst ones was restless leg syndrome at night. I had a lot of issues sleeping and my legs would ache so bad I would punch my calves in the middle of the night to distract from the pain. I told Terry Sweeney and Mickey Manning. Mickey Manning told me that if I did not take the medication that I would receive the worst punishment which was Whiteboard (8 hard labor hours, 10 hills, no sugar, no parent call)

2024.05.12 19:56 Just-Control-9815 Struggling with relative imports. Please help me to confirm that my understanding of "attempted relative import beyond top-level package" error is correct

In my folder named project, this is my directory structure.
. ├── folder_1 │ ├── folder_3 │ │ ├── module_3.py │ │ └── module_4.py │ └── module_1.py ├── folder_2 │ └── module_2.py └── script.py
I am trying to do relative imports inside module_3.py
# module_3.py print("Code is currently in module_3.py file") print("\n File name of module_3.py :",__name__) from . import module_4 from .. import module_1 from ...folder_2 import module_2
  1. When I do python3 -m project.folder_1.folder_3.module_3, it runs successfully.
  2. When I run python3 -m folder_1.folder_3.module_3, I am getting below error:
Traceback (most recent call last): File "/Library/DevelopeCommandLineTools/Library/Frameworks/Python3.framework/Versions/3.9/lib/python3.9/runpy.py", line 197, in _run_module_as_main return _run_code(code, main_globals, None, File "/Library/DevelopeCommandLineTools/Library/Frameworks/Python3.framework/Versions/3.9/lib/python3.9/runpy.py", line 87, in _run_code exec(code, run_globals) File "/Users/admin/Desktop/remote/project/folder_1/folder_3/module_3.py", line 13, in from ...folder_2 import module_2 ImportError: attempted relative import beyond top-level package
What I know is that relative imports works inside packages only.
QUESTION - Is my understanding correct that giving project in command helps python understand that project is also a package, otherwise it considers only folder_1 a package and cannot findfolder_2 even if it is at same level as folder_1 becauses it does not recognize its parent folder project directory as a package since I am running the command excluding project word from it.
Does that mean it is always better to run the your program at the top most parent folder?
If not so, what is the reason it cannot traverse folder_2 which is a sibling directory at same level as folder_1

2024.05.12 16:12 TheBigCore Dosbox-Staging 0.81.1 Has Been Released

The release fixes the following 0.81.0 regressions:
Regression fixes
Fix Wing Commander 3 videos and cutscenes appearing height-doubled.
Introduce vga_render_per_scanline = off workaround to fix the crash-at-startup regression in Deus, Ishar 3, Robinson’s Requiem, and Time Warriors.
Fix the Tandy version of Impossible Mission II crashing at startup.
Fix regression in Tyrian where pressing the arrow keys get registered twice in menus.
Fix starting In Extremis resulting in a black screen.
Fix wrong colours in Spell It Plus! (needs machine = svga_paradise).
Fix wrong colours and garbled graphics in Spong and Exobius.
Fix squashed video output in the text mode game Indenture.
Fix the DOSBox Staging window gaining focus on every emulated video mode change.
Fix crash when exiting DOSBox Staging while in fullscreen mode on macOS and Linux.
Fix not being able to disable OPL emulation with oplmode = none.
Enhancements and fixes
We’ve also backported a number of enhancements and fixes for long-standing issues:
Introduce vmem_delay = on to help with flickering graphics and speed issues in Hercules, CGA, EGA, and early VGA games. This has proven to improve compatibility with Future Wars, Operation Stealth, Quest for Glory II, Hostages, The Gold of the Aztecs, Crazy Brix, Corncob Deluxe, and Corncob 3-D so far.
Improve support for multiple joysticks/game controllers (the mapper could behave erratically if you had more than one controller connected).
Emulate a memory-expanded PCjr machine more faithfully. This improves game compatibility; for example, Space Quest (v1.0x and v2.2) and King’s Quest (1986 PCjr DOS version) now work instead of hanging the emulator.
CD Audio is no longer muted in certain parts of Time Warriors and Alpha Storm.
The batch file installer of Alpha Storm no longer fails.
Forcing single scanning via crt-auto-arcade should now work with more programs.
Fix various VGA double scanning related edge cases in demoscene productions.
Detecting “repurposed” EGA video modes with 18-bit VGA DAC colours has been made more robust when using the crt-auto shader (should result in a double-scanned VGA shader being picked).
Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese translations have been added, and most of the other translations have been updated.

Graphics-related changes:

  • VGA double scanning fixes & improvements
  • Option to emulate video memory access delays
  • Option for legacy VGA rendering
  • Option for legacy palette behaviour
  • Tandy graphics fixes
  • Other fixes

Sound-related changes

  • Implement seeking in MSCDEX
  • Fix not being able to disable OPL emulation
  • Other fixes:
Fixed crash when output filter cutoff frequencies are not below half the sample rate (e.g., by setting rate = 11025 and sbtype = sbpro1 which selects a 8 kHz low-pass filter by default).
Fixed FluidSynth and MT-32 crashing the emulator when the host sample rate is set to 8000 Hz.

Input-related changes

  • Fixed a keyboard handling regression in Tyrian where pressing the arrow keys get registered twice, making the menus very hard to use.
  • Fixed a keyboard handling regression in In Extremis where starting the game only resulted in a black screen.
  • Fixed various problems in the mapper when using more than a single game controller (e.g., with two joysticks connected, mapping the controls of the first joystick could randomly target the mappings of the second one and vice versa).
  • Fixed obscure regression where the timed = on joystick setting messed up the available free memory reported by the FreeDOS MEM.EXE command.

DOS integration related changes

  • Improved expanded PCjr emulation
  • DOS shell improvements:
Fixed a bug that caused the batch file installer of Alpha Storm to fail.
The help text of the IMGMOUNT command now mentions the very handy wildcard mounting option. E.g., you can use the IMGMOUNT A floppy*.img -t floppy command to mount multiple floppy images, then cycle between them with Ctrl+F4 at runtime (Cmd+F4 on macOS).
The LOADFIX command’s help text is more complete now (some options were not documented previously).
When a batch file was being instantiated, the echo state from the parent was not being transferred correctly if the parent was another batch file.

Localisation-related changes

  • Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese translations have been added.
  • Updates to the Dutch, German, and Polish translations.

Miscellaneous changes

  • Attempting to change unchangeable settings via the CONFIG command at runtime is no longer silently accepted (without doing anything) but an error is raised instead.
  • Unknown command-line switches starting with dashes are now ignored and a warning is logged—DOSBox Staging will not try to execute them anymore. As a side effect, the current working directory was mounted as the C drive, which led to very non-intuitive behaviour.
  • The Windows installer now creates a Start Menu shortcut to launch DOSBox Staging without showing the console window (DOSBox Staging (no console window) menu item).
  • The Windows installer no longer starts DOSBox Staging automatically when the installation is completed.
  • Most config settings are now correctly reverted to their defaults when an invalid value is set, and their values are kept in sync with the active setting.

Nature of Humanity Ch 66
A Rose by Any Other Name, Part 15
A Fanfic of u/SpacePaladin15’s work “The Nature of Predators.” Thank you for the story!
___
Memory transcription subject: Talen, Prime News Anchor
Date [standardized human time]: November 3rd, 2136
Hospital lights are infamous for being bright to the point of inducing migraines and eye fatigue. This is, of course, done for a ‘good’ reason. To discourage Predators from attacking hospitals for an easy meal. It’s common knowledge a predator will attack the weak, sick, and injured before attacking someone that can actually fight back. It surprised me when I learned this was one of the few ‘facts’ the Federation actually had, mostly, right.
Unfortunately, in practice all these lights have ever really done is attract bugs and the Arxur. Like a neon side at an all-you-can-eat salad bar, the power draw alone was a beacon for raids. This has led to many people choosing to suffer in silence rather than be admitted to a hospital.
My mind flashed to the angry Texan ranting about the poor quality of life we awarded to those less fortunate than ourselves. Thoughts of the older woman who confessed to us that her husband had been shot and left as a sacrifice to Human soldiers made me wonder if these hospitals were actually built to serve… another purpose. To act as a distraction, so the Federation can evacuate those they actually value.
I glanced at the doctor and nurse leaving Rose's room. My application to be her guardian was… weak at best, and still under UN review. Most likely they wouldn't provide me any information beyond just whether I could see her or not.
One of the Venlil doctors looked tear-struck as he gave one last glance back into Rose’s room. He quickly perked himself up or at least put the facade on as he walked over to the waiting room. He scanned the human faces in here as he asked, “McDermott? Talen McDermott?”
The sudden addition to my name caught me off guard to the point I just sat in stunned silence. After a moment of looking around he asked again, before looking at his notes with a confused look on his face. Before he left, I gently raised my paw into the air, “My name is Talen. Just Talen. I applied for guardianship over Rose McDermott. It's still in review…”
He cocked his head to the side for a moment before his assumptions finally broke, “Ah! My apologies. If you would, please come with me, sir.”
The doctor led me to his office and offered me a seat. As he started to type on his computer, he flicked an ear to the screen facing me as a QR code came up. As my pad downloaded the data packet, he began to explain, “Alright, so as you are aware Rose has been through… some traumatic events. Both physical and mental.”
I started to look through the data as he carried on, “To start with, she clawed out most of her eyes. The nerves at the back of the eye were mostly fine and took to the nerve plate well. When she's had some time to heal, it should be simple to restore her sight. The main issue we have is that the war is stepping up, and we are getting more people coming back in need of our cloning machines.”
He pulled up a small list of human prosthetic companies on my pad, “Which means we can't make Rose a new set of organic eyes for… the foreseeable future. Which is why we opted to prep her for Optics while we wait. These companies have been vetted as trustworthy manufacturers, and the Hospital we plan to transfer Rose to on Venlil Prime will be more than capable of handling the installation.”
By the stars, how close was I to failing to save her at all? I nodded my head as I bit my lip and tried to stay calm, “Alright. So she will have prosthetic eyes soon?”
He wagged his tail meekly, “Maybe in about [two weeks] if the healing goes fine. It's best not to rush nervous systems when it comes to healing. It's not an easy process.”
He showed me an X-ray of Rose's teeth, “Now as for her teeth, we were able to save those. They are set in place but still need time to heal. It will take about twenty-one days for them to heal to a point where she can use them as she would normally.”
He pulled multiple photos of federation friendly, Terran food up, “So soft food until then. Soups, leafy salads with nothing hard… I have included a list and a few links to human recipes that will more than meet her nutritional requirements while she recovers, as well as into her care under you until she ages out.”
My mind drifted to the pills she had been given, “Ok then uhm, what about the medication she was on? Something like that… It could…”
He gently laid his paw on mine, “Her system is clean and showing no signs of a chemical dependency. That doesn't mean there won't be mental factors involved that could encourage her to seek escape through pharmaceuticals again. So long as her mental needs are met, she should recover well.”
I glanced up and quickly wiped away a few tears, “Ok, then… I don't know if I am the best person for that…”
“A lot of her care will simply just be showing her love, affection and that she matters and there is nothing wrong with her being human.” He looked ashamed as he spoke, “She will still need… Human care. From my personal research into the field, Humans need physical contact to be healthy and deteriorate slowly when isolated.”
He leaned forward and flicked his ears for my full attention, “Also do NOT let any Federation trained Psychiatrist near her. The Humans are miles ahead of us in terms of psychology and the treatment of those whose minds differ from the norm. It won't be easy to get a human Psychiatrist, but Rose will be high up on the list of those available to get help. Partly due to her unique situation but also to her parent's service and sacrifice.”
I let out a breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding. I will never be able to give her everything she needs, but I can at least hold the tide back long enough for those who can. I have an empty bedroom for her to make her own… I'm not far from a refugee center school, so it shouldn't be hard for her to interact with other humans in a friendly environment… Food costs are going to go up… Ah. I haven't been working… Kotaka isn't going to fire me, but I have used all of my vacation time for this… I let out a lite cough, “And payment?”
He gave a curt nod, “Already paid. Part of her compensation for her parents’ service and sacrifice.”
I hope they don't know how their daughter was failed after everything they gave for her, “I'd like to see her if that's possible.”
He stood up from his desk, “Of course, follow me.”
We left his office behind and navigated the winding hallways designed to hopefully slow an Arxur raider from clearing the hospital quickly. I could remember when hospitals were built with quickly traversing them in mind. It took nearly no time to get to Aylin when she went into labor… it took the Arxur nearly no time to get to her in the hospital she was working at.
He stopped just at the precipice of one of the room's and rasped his knuckles on the door frame, “Rose? Are you awake? Your guardian is here to see you.”
He flicked his tail for me to enter as he turned the lights on. Rose was sitting right there. Her bed had been raised to a sitting position, but her head was leaned against a pillow as she slept. The doctor flicked the light's on, and I angrily gestured that she was sleeping.
I felt a bit stupid when I realized why the lights being on wouldn't bother her right now. He smiled like both a Venlil and a Human and dimmed the lights to half brightness before ducking out of the room. I crept as quietly as I could to Rose's bedside, my unkempt nails clacking against the floor. Yet, Rose didn't stir as I sat in a nearby chair.
Every time we have met has coincided with some of the worst times for us. My mind blamed me. Not for my failure to control myself back during the exchange program. But for seeking her out. If I had respected her parent's wishes of us never speaking again, then surely they wouldn't have died. Earth wouldn't have been bombed. Rose wouldn't- Rose wouldn't- … I'm full of shit.
The events that led to this were primarily out of my control. Beyond my failure, I wasn't the one who convinced the Gojids to try and attack, nor was I the one who made the Krakotl actually do it. I didn't introduce that predator Venlil to Rose. He was just trying to help her. I did the only thing I could, and if I hadn’t… no one else was coming to save her.
I leaned forward and grasped her hand in my paw. Physical contact was proven to drastically improve a Human's ability to heal.
Her skin was cold under my paw pads. Would she call them beans like the lady who helped me find her?
Her hand flexed around mine, squeezing it with just the slightest amount of force. Have her dreams just changed? Hopefully, for the better. Will she awake and know who is here beside her?
With my free paw. I swept a blood orange lock of greasy hair from her face. It's been so long since I had the slightest glimpse of her face burned into my mind. Now half of it was covered in bandages.
I sat and waited as she rested. As time ebbed and flowed on around us, nurses would come in and check her vitals as she slept. Eventually, her doctor returned and unprompted explained the painkillers she was on were known to cause drowsiness. She likely hadn't been sleeping well.
He wrote me a short list of sleep aids that were human safe… well, rather he was until he decided to throw it away and write me a list of the ones to not give her. Humans were starting to become infamous for the toxin tolerance in the medical field as many doctors were uncomfortable prescribing such high doses of medicine for their new human patients.
Her thumb began to work its way through the fluff on the back of my paw as Rose slowly stirred awake. Her grip tightened a little bit as she groggily turned her head in my rough direction, “hrm… hello?”
My words caught in my throat as I tried to speak a dozen thoughts at once. Her hand pulled away in fear as she held herself in her arms, “I'm sorry! I'm sorry… I didn't mean to scare you.”
“No!” My right law landed on her shoulder eliciting a small surprised jump, “Don't apologize Rose. Don't ever apologize for just existing. You have done nothing wrong.”
Her hand found its way to my paw resting on her shoulder still and grabbed it. She looked confused as she tried to place my voice, “I- uh- who- Do I know you?”
Once again my words hung In my throat, but I squeezed Rose's shoulder and could see a small bit of the fear leave, “It's me Rose… I know I wasn't supposed to contact you but… It's me. Talen…”
Her hands flew to her mouth as her breath hitched in her lungs. I could hear sobbing begin as she tried to speak, “I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! I-”
My free paw quickly found its way to her cheek as I stood up. I pulled her closer, into my arms and instinctively groomed her hair. She wrapped her arms around me and squeezed, and I wrapped my arms around her and squeezed just as hard. Her head sunk into the fluff on my chest as she began to sob.
I held her. As tenderly as I could. Memories of holding a young Elva, who had just come back from another terrible day at school, rushed back to my mind, “Rose, you weren't the reason- What happened back on the station had nothing to do with you.”
She managed to choke out a “But-”
I shook my head, “No buts. None. When the Arxur killed my wife, I was on a call with her. I witnessed it. When Elva was being bullied at school for being a little more assertive than normal, I had to stop the exterminators from locking her away in an institution. As a news reporter, I've seen so many supposedly good people do horrid things to those with no power.”
I groomed the top of her head to give me a chance to compile the rest of my thoughts, “So when I did my job as a journalist comparing what the Federation ‘knew’ about humanity and what humanity was saying about itself… I couldn't see what was the truth. When my Daughter wanted to join the exchange program with me… I only joined, so I could try and keep her safe.”
I ran my paw across the top of her head, “Then I met you. I forgot my fears. I never addressed them. Just buried. Then we were sent to different stations and I realized I couldn’t protect Her. When you finally walked into the room, I had been slipping into a panic spiral and… well… I broke. I was desperately trying to get to Elva, trying to rationalize what I have witnessed against propaganda against you, trying and failing to separate what happened to Aylin with what was happening then and I… failed to.”
Rose's sobbing had begun to calm down as we just held each other. I took in a deep breath and felt it catch in my lungs. The tear soaked fur on my face stuck to my it as I pressed my head to the top of hers.
She slightly pulled away but stayed in my embrace, “I'm sorry about Elva. She was so nice…”
The sorrow in her voice caught me off-guard, “Wha- why are you sorry about her?”
Her head dipped, “I- I saw your news coverage of the Cradle raid. I recognized her when it- when that Arxur killed her. If it wasn't for us- she wouldn't-”
I ran my paw over her head, “Elva didn't die. She is actually going on a special mission for the UN right now. Even then, it's not Humanity's fault that happened. If Humanity hadn’t shown up, the Arxur raid that attacked the other exchange station would have led to another raid on Venlil Prime. It would have led to all of us dying.”
I cooed over her, “Humanity has been a blessing every person in this galaxy has needed. For the first time in my life, I feel like things might actually improve. Humanity- No. You have lost so much. I know how much it hurts to lose your parent’s to war. Though, I had gotten the joy of spending most of my life with them. I am so sorry this has happened to you.”
She buried her face in her hands, “I miss them so much. I just want them back!”
I pulled her back into my arms, “Don’t let go of it, Rose. Everything you have of them still… carry them with you. Make sure the world doesn’t forget them.”
Her sobbing came back, thick, heavy and ugly, but I didn’t run as she gripped me with every bit of strength she had. I held her as she fell back asleep.
As gently as I could, I laid her back against her pillows and cleaned some mucus off her face. I was also grateful for the cleaning room they had in the hospital as I prepared myself to function as a pillow once more. It wasn’t long before she stirred again, “I’m right here, Rose. I am not abandoning you.”
She nodded her head as she held herself with her arms, “What’s going to happen now?”
I moved a fiery lock of hair out of her face, “Well… I have applied for guardianship of you… at least until you are old enough to live on your own. Then you can leave at your leisure. I- You are always welcome in my home. Speaking of which, we will be headed to Venlil Prime soon. It’s a better environment there. Most of the Venlil in Dayside city are human friendly. You are getting transferred to a hospital there and will be staying with me. I am also going to try and get you to see a human Psychiatrist. Well, I may also see if they’ll see me. I could use some help too.”
Rose didn’t laugh at my joke, “Meji. He- He was always kind to me. Even with everything that was done to him, he was just really nice and tried to help me. I know he’s a drug addict, but- I don’t think he will survive much longer here.”
I tried to steer the conversation away from that… man, “I- I met him… and I think he’s going to be able to take care of himself just fine.”
I could hear the fear in her voice, “No… he's… he’s only been on the streets for six months… and that’s what he looks like. I watched him lose weight… he's just not…”
Here I am… he's probably in the same boat that Tarlim was once in. What kind of fucking idiot am I!? Of course, every institute is going to be the same. I cleared my throat, “I know he got the attention of some human soldiers. They got him to see one of their doctors. If I know anything, then he is probably being helped whether he wants it or not. I will do my job as a reporter and get the scoop on him for you. But for right now, let’s… Let’s rest. It’s been a long road, and we haven’t had a chance to shelter from the storm.”

It’s been a long time coming but these two are probably going to be fine… probably.

2024.05.12 14:57 New_Dragonfly9732 I lost everything can't access/mount to my partition anymore. Could you explain me why?

This is what happened.
  1. I hibernated my Fedora with a luks encrypted btrfs partition.
  2. I started a Linux Mint OS, and I wanted to save a file to the Fedora hibernated partition, so I copied and saved it there.
  3. I rebooted and then started Fedora and Fedora was resumed from hibernation and I had all the open windows, all SEEMED normal. I looked for the pasted file of before, but couldn't find it. (now I know that if a partition is of a hibernated OS, files are not saved. so this is my first question: why does this happen? why you CAN'T save a file in a hibernated OS partition?) (actually this file is not dead, later you'll see this is hilarious)
  4. I realized that something strange was going on. I couldn't start Firefox, Brave, GnomeSoftwareManager, or other programs because it said that couldn't create folders or something like that, so the system was not behaving correctly. So I hibernated again.
  5. After reboot and after entered decrypt partition password as usual then it asked for the login password as usual. but while I was entering it, all became BLACK and strange characters popup @@@@ and also a part of the password I was entering. All seemed blocked so I decided to HARD RESET.
  6. After power on, Fedora couldn't boot and entered in maintenance mode. journalctl logs said: device dm parent transid verify failed on logical and also failed to read block groups -5 and also open_ctree failed so I power off.
  7. I started again Linux Mint and tried to do cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/nvme0n1p6 luks and then mount -t btrfs -o ro,usebackuproot /dev/mappeluks /mnt but I got wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mappeluks, missing codepage or helper program, or other error. and then I am doing a btrfs restore -i --path-regex '^/(home(/user(/.*)))$' /dev/mappeluks /media/rescue/ and it tells me: parent transid verify failed on 30441472 wanted 810609 found 855765 parent transid verify failed on 30441472 wanted 810609 found 855765 parent transid verify failed on 30441472 wanted 810609 found 855765 Ignoring transid failure ERROR: root [5 0] level 2 does not match 0 Could not open root, trying backup superand then starts to restore some files. that -i is because there are errors and it's to ignore them and go on restoring what it can restore. Luckily I'm able to restore some files, but not all. I get errors something like ERROR:failed mkdir /media/rescue/path/to/file: Invalid argument or ERROR: creating /media/rescue/path/to/file failed (but I actually suspect it's due to some strange character in the name of files, for example it can't be a coincidence that these two specific errors appear for files with characters like "\" or ":" or "🛡" so I don't know maybe there is a fix **since it must be a bug? ** or ERROR: searching directory /media/rescue/path/to/file failedor ERROR: search for next directory entry failed: -5or ERROR: searching extent data returned -5or ERROR: copying data for /media/rescue/path/to/file failed.or also similar to ERORR:child eb corrupted: parent bytenr=36159488 item=230 parent level=2 child bytenr=534872064 child level=0
  8. The hilarious thing is that among other files, I have rescued that pasted file that caused ALL THE PROBLEMS. It must be kidding me.
So my second (actually more different) question: why all this happened? Why just pasting a file in a hibernated OS partition caused all this? What caused the issue and why? What mechanisms are going on and what's their purpose and why all this happened? Could this been avoided if I was using another filesystem?
My last question is: is there something else I can do to be able to boot again?

2024.05.12 10:11 NeuroNightOwls r/NeurodiverSydney aka; Neurodiversity in Sydney, Neurodiverse Sydney, NeuroNightOwls, Sydney Late Nights/Sydney Up Late/Sydney AD4ND, Nocturnal Night Needs! Possibly something for events or speed dating soon? 😏

If you’re new to the community, introduce yourself !
• What’s your name? • How old are you and where in Sydney are you from? Greater Sydney included! •What’s your Neurodiversity, if any… • If none, are you a parent to a neuro diverse child and is your child diagnosed? What are they diagnosed with? •Are you? Do you need a diagnosis due to the long wait times since TikTok? 🙄
**Well look no further. We will have psychologists here available at night, to do your assessments via teams, zoom or whatever suits you.
This way there no missing work or anything!**
• Or maybe you are a service (like our two 24hr chemists or our other late night ones or even do deliveries for people’s meds etc)? 😏
I am looking for all late night services, Chemist, pathology, doctors, nails, hair, photography, anything and everything; also all mobile mechanics and tattoo ideas and whatever you may be.
In particular, I’m really interested if you are a small business or working for yourself or a home run business by a mum with babies or just any thing like the above. Even provisional psychs or people in their last year etc.
**Another reason this came to fruition, was because when I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease on top of my ADHD, and then my proper diagnosed autism ; I had a really hard time with my ADHD symptoms, and I would look forward to Thursday nights, because it would be the only day that I would be able to get something done by the time I get out of the house.
I should add physically disabled as well.
But yes I had this idea. I spoke to some professions and they were down and it’s something in the making but I hope this to be something big because there is a need for it, for us in Sydney.
I swear Sydney is so small that we all know each other by less than 6° of separation, but it’s also a city where everyone just walks past each other and it’s just hustle and bustle and nobody stops and just take the moment in or you know for us, it’s so exhausting with masking all day then with schoolwork, etc
And then the city seems so big when you actually need to find help or assessments or any of these things; even though like I said above, we all know each other by 6° of separation or less Lol so this is meant to be a directory or kind of like a service to hook you guys up with what you need whether it’s your hair done at night time; with your kids there even…. Could even get mobile hairdressers to you can get your kids hair braided night before their event because you know we all do that stuff last minute… I used to pay for Coles plus so that I’d I woulld make sure that all the grocery shopping was done for lunch orders for the week that stuff will add up. Why can’t we just do that for each other just like we would if we lived in the money for Utopia.
So again, this is a bit of a dream and just to see where it goes. I have a lot of ideas for this going forward I may have a board member who wants to open a drop-in centre.

2024.05.12 02:47 Classic-Historian958 Uploading AWS Lambda's to S3, Changes not detected.

Hello.
Im relatively new to terraform and devops, So still learning but im trying to build a good process to upload lambda functions to s3 and then Aws lambda to use those zip files.
I want terraform to detect changes when we update the code and then update those functions when the old zip files don't match the new zip files. I believe that the hashing solves this problem but im not entirely sure or understand what it's doing underneath.
I have managed to get terraform to upload my locally prebuilt zips files to S3 and creating lambda function from these zip files.
but when i make changes to the code. The aws_s3_object detects a change in the source_code_hash. But the function itself isn't detecting any changes.
Each function has its own node environment. They are all mini typescript apps so they all are pre built and zipped up individually before terraform plan and apply actioned.
any help would be great appreciated. many thanks.
this is how i build my zips files
# Create the zips directory if it doesn't exist mkdir -p ../zips cd functions exit # Loop through each directory in the current directory for dir in */; do ls # Enter the directory cd "$dir" exit npm i npm run build npm prune --production cp -r ./node_modules dist/ # Get the directory name dir_name=$(basename "$dir") cd dist exit # Run the zip command and save the zip file in ../zips directory zip -r "../../../zips/$dir_name.zip" . # Clean up the dist folder and the node_modules folder cd ../ rm -rf node_modules rm -rf dist # Return to the parent directory cd ../ done
this is the terraform file.
// main.tf locals { path = "../../../serverless/zips" zips = fileset("../../../serverless/zips", "*.zip") } resource "aws_s3_bucket" "lambda_bucket" { bucket_prefix = "store-${var.environment_name}-lambda-functions-" } resource "aws_s3_object" "upload_lambda" { for_each = local.zips bucket = aws_s3_bucket.lambda_bucket.id key = "${element(split(".", each.value), 0)}.zip" source = "${local.path}/${each.value}" source_hash = filebase64sha256("${local.path}/${each.value}") } module "lambda_function_existing_package_s3" { for_each = local.zips source = "terraform-aws-modules/lambda/aws" function_name = "${element(split(".", each.value), 0)}-${var.environment_name}" description = "${element(split(".", each.value), 0)} for ${var.environment_name} Environment ${each.key}" hash_extra= aws_s3_object.upload_lambda[each.key].source_hash runtime = "nodejs20.x" handler = "index.handler" create_package = false s3_existing_package = { source_code_hash = aws_s3_object.upload_lambda[each.key].source_hash bucket = aws_s3_bucket.lambda_bucket.id key = "${element(split(".", each.value), 0)}.zip" } } // Terraform will perform the following actions:

2024.05.11 21:29 TimeSorceror Cloning My SSD - Parent Directory Necessary?

So I'm cloning my LCD's SSD with Clonezilla to transfer over to my OLED, and following this video from Overkill Gaming that I found elsewhere on the subreddit.
I bought a brand new SanDisk External SSD for the purposes of this transfer (which looks similar to the one shown in the video). It's 500 GB because my LCD was an OG 256 from back when you had to be on the waitlist to buy a Deck.
Anyway, as I'm following the steps, I eventually got to the "Directory Browser for Clonezilla Image repository" menu, and all it showed me was Exit_directory_browsing. Navigating to the Browse button and pressing enter using my keyboard just brought me to a "Clonezilla - Opensource Clone System (OCS)" window that said 'Do you want to do it again?' And clicking Done led me to the next step in the cloning procedure, which I still did anyway, just in case I could still use the clone it produced.
Will not having been able to select a parent directory have any effect on my OLED Steam Deck if I try to transfer the clone? Could my lack of any other options to select just be because the external drive I'm using is brand new? As I mentioned previously, I bought the SanDisk External drive specifically for this purpose, and I never connected it to any other device besides my Steam Deck dock. I don't want to try and use it on my brand new OLED and potentially screw something up because I didn't format the external drive properly or something.

2024.05.11 21:13 SanderSo47 Directors at the Box Office: Wes Craven

Directors at the Box Office: Wes Craven

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Wes Craven's turn.
Craven earned a master's degree in philosophy and writing from Johns Hopkins University. He subsequently bought a 16mm film camera and began making short movies. His friend Steve Chapin informed him of a messenger position at a New York City film production co, where his brother, future folk-rock star Harry Chapin worked. He started in the industry as a sound editor, before transitioning as a porn director. He said he made "many hardcore X-rated films" under pseudonyms. And then he transitioned into directing for the big screen.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1970s, some of the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.

The Last House on the Left (1972)

"Mari, seventeen, is dying. Even for her, the worst is yet to come."
His directorial debut. The film stars Sandra Peabody, Lucy Grantham, David Hess, Fred J. Lincoln, Jeramie Rain, and Marc Sheffler. The plot follows Mari Collingwood, a teenager who is abducted, raped, and tortured by a family of violent fugitives led by Krug Stillo on her seventeenth birthday. When her parents discover what happened to her, they seek vengeance against the family, who have taken shelter at their home.
Craven, who had no money at the time, was put on the job of synchronizing dailies for Sean S. Cunningham's Together. They became friends, and Hallmark Releasing gave them $90,000 to make another film. Craven considered a hardcore film, but decided to tone it down a bit. The idea for this film came from Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring, and Craven wanted to make a film in which the violence would be shown in detail onscreen, as he felt that many popular films of the era, such as Westerns, glamorized violence and the "vigilante hero", and gave the public a misleading representation of death in the wake of the Vietnam War.
The film attracted negative media attention for its heavy graphic content, and there were calls for some theaters to drop the film. But you know, bad buzz is still buzz and that translated to a pretty good run in theaters, earning up to $3 million in its initial run. Even to this day, the film is polarizing due to its violence and themes. But Craven just made his name well known.
  • Budget: $90,000.
  • Domestic gross: $3,100,000. ($23.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $3,100,000.

The Hills Have Eyes (1977)

"A nice American family. They didn't want to kill. But they didn't want to die."
His second film. The film stars Susan Lanier, Michael Berryman and Dee Wallace. The film follows the Carters, a suburban family targeted by a family of cannibal savages after becoming stranded in the Nevada desert.
Craven wanted to make a non-horror, but he found that his investors only wanted films with graphic content. At the New York Public Library, Craven checked the library's forensics department, and learned of the legend of Sawney Bean - the alleged head of a 48-person Scottish clan responsible for the murder and cannibalization of more than one thousand people. He drew influences from this, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Grapes of Wrath. Craven also had to cut a lot of scenes to avoid getting an X rating.
The film once again drew negative attention for its violence. But it made over $25 million at the box office, which was an even bigger success than House. It subsequently earned a cult following.
  • Budget: $700,000.
  • Domestic gross: $25,000,000. ($128.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $25,000,000.

Deadly Blessing (1981)

"Pray you're not blessed."
His third film. It stars Ernest Borgnine, Maren Jensen, Susan Buckner, and Sharon Stone, and tells the story of a strange figure committing murder in a contemporary community that is not far from another community that believes in ancient evil and curses.
It received negative reviews, but it was another box office success for Craven.
  • Budget: $3,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,279,042. ($28.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $8,279,042.

Swamp Thing (1982)

"Science transformed him into a monster. Love changed him even more!"
His fourth film. Based on the DC Comics character created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, it stars Louis Jourdan and Adrienne Barbeau. It tells the story of scientist Alec Holland who is transformed into the monster known as Swamp Thing through laboratory sabotage orchestrated by the evil Anton Arcane. Later, he helps a woman named Alice Cable and battles the man responsible for it all, the ruthless Arcane.
The film made $2.5 million domestically, despite mixed reviews.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $2,500,000. ($8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $2,500,000.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

"If Nancy doesn't wake up screaming, she won't wake up at all."
His fifth film. It stars Heather Langenkamp, John Saxon, Ronee Blakley, Johnny Depp, and Robert Englund. The film's plot concerns a group of teenagers who are targeted by Freddy Krueger, an undead child killer who can murder people through their dreams, as retribution against their parents who burned him alive.
The film was inspired by several newspaper articles printed in the Los Angeles Times in the 1970s about Hmong refugees, who, after fleeing to the United States because of war and genocide in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, suffered disturbing nightmares and refused to sleep. Some of the men died in their sleep soon after. This, along with the song "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright, motivated Craven to craft a horror film focused on people dying through their sleep.
The film's villain, Freddy Krueger, is drawn from Craven's early life. One night, a young Craven saw an elderly man walking on the sidepath outside the window of his home. The man stopped to glance at a startled Craven and walked off. This served as the inspiration for Krueger. Initially, Fred Krueger was intended to be a child molester, but Craven eventually characterized him as a child murderer to avoid being accused of exploiting a spate of highly publicized child molestation cases that occurred in California around the time of the film's production. He settled on the name Freddy Krueger, which was based on a childhood bully of his.
The process of writing the film went smoothly, the real problem was finding a studio. Craven sent it to most studios, and all rejected it. The first studio to show interest was Disney, but Craven declined their offer as they wanted a more toned-down kid-friendly PG-13 flick. When Paramount and Universal also turned it down, Craven decided to go to the independent studio New Line Cinema. The studio only distributed films, but they agreed in financing the film. As they lacked the financial resources for the production, New Line had to turn to external financiers.
Despite opening in just 165 theaters, the film earned $1.2 million in its opening weekend, making it clear that it would be an immediate box office success. It eventually closed with $25 million domestically, and $57 million worldwide. It received critical acclaim, and has been referred as one of the best and most influential slashers ever made. Freddy Krueger would soon be hailed as one of the most emblematic figures of horror, and Craven quickly earned a reputation as a horror legend. But most importantly, it was the beginning of New Line Cinema as a studio, which is why it's referred as "the house that Freddy built."
The film would later spawn a franchise, although Craven wouldn't direct any of the "sequels." Why the quotation marks? We'll get to that later on.
  • Budget: $1,100,000.
  • Domestic gross: $25,624,448. ($77 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $57,185,134.

The Hills Have Eyes Part II (1985)

"So you think you're lucky to be alive."
His sixth film. The sequel to The Hills Have Eyes, it stars Tamara Stafford, Kevin Spirtas, John Bloom, Michael Berryman, Penny Johnson, Janus Blythe, John Laughlin, Willard E. Pugh, Peter Frechette and Robert Houston. It follows a group of bikers who become stranded in the desert and find themselves fighting off a family of inbred cannibals who live off the land.
The film was shot on a very low budget, and it simply ended prematurely because they ran out of funds. There are no box office numbers available, but it received awful reviews.

Deadly Friend (1986)

"There's no one alive who'll play with the girl next door."
His seventh film. Based on the novel Friend by Diana Henstell, it stars Matthew Laborteaux, Kristy Swanson, Michael Sharrett, Anne Twomey, Richard Marcus, and Anne Ramsey. Its plot follows a teenage computer prodigy who implants a robot's processor into the brain of his teenage neighbor after she is pronounced brain dead; the experiment proves successful, but she swiftly begins a killing spree in their neighborhood.
Craven wanted to make a PG-rated science fiction film, with a similar tone to Starman, hoping to prove that he could make something that wasn't horror-themed. An unfinished version of the film was screened to a test audience of Craven's fanbase, and it was poorly received for its lack of violence and gore like his previous films. So WB decided to rewrite the film, adding more scenes with tons of gore. This made the final film appear tonally jumbled, and it went from easy PG to struggling to not get an X rating.
The film was poorly received for its story and inconsistent tone. It also marked a huge flop at the box office, not even hitting $10 million. Craven lost interest in the film after WB inserted their own version, and he has since disowned the film.
  • Budget: $11,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,988,731. ($25.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $8,988,731.

The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)

"Don't bury me, I'm not dead!"
His eighth film. It stars Bill Pullman, and is loosely based on the life of ethnobotanist Wade Davis, recounting his experiences in Haiti investigating the story of Clairvius Narcisse, who was allegedly poisoned, buried alive, and revived with a herbal brew which produced what was called a zombie.
The film received mixed reactions, but it was a much needed box office success for Craven.
  • Budget: $7,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,595,031. ($51.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $19,595,031.

Shocker (1989)

"No more Mr. Nice Guy."
His ninth film. It stars Michael Murphy, Peter Berg, Cami Cooper, and Mitch Pileggi, and follows a serial killer who uses electricity to come back from the dead and carry out his vengeance on the football player who turned him in to the police.
Another mixed bag for Craven, but it was still profitable.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $16,554,699. ($41.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $16,554,699.

The People Under the Stairs (1991)

"In every neighborhood, there's one house that adults whisper about and children cross the street to avoid."
His tenth film. It stars Brandon Adams, Everett McGill, Wendy Robie, and A. J. Langer. The plot follows a young boy and two adult robbers who become trapped in a house belonging to a neighborhood's crooked landlords after breaking in to steal their collection of gold coins as the boy learns a dark secret about them and what also lurks in their house.
After a slate of mixed performers, the film received Craven's best reviews since Elm Street. To the surprise of Universal, it was also a box office success.
  • Budget: $6,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $24,204,154. ($55.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $31,347,154.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)

"This time, the terror doesn't stop at the screen."
His 11th film. The installment in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, it stars Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, Miko Hughes and John Saxon. The film is not part of the same continuity as previous films, and it portrays Freddy Krueger as a fictional movie villain who invades the real world and haunts the cast and crew involved in the making of the films about him.
While Craven co-wrote the franchise's third installment, Dream Warriors, he wasn't that involved with the rest of the franchise. He wanted to make a deliberately more cerebral film than recent entries to the franchise, as he considered them as being cartoonish, and not faithful to his original themes. Specifically, he wanted Freddy to resemble his original vision: far darker and less comical. To reinforce this, the character's make-up and outfit were enhanced, with one of the most prominent differences being that he now wears a long blue/black trenchcoat. In addition, the signature glove was redesigned for a more organic look, with the fingers resembling bones and having muscle textures in between.
The film received high praise, and was considered as the best film in the franchise since the original (it was Englund's favorite). But the franchise has been bleeding interest at the box office, and New Nightmare unfortunately had to suffer. It was profitable, but it became the lowest grossing film in the franchise.
  • Budget: $8,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $18,090,181. ($38.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $19,721,741.

Vampire in Brooklyn (1995)

"A comic tale of horror and seduction."
His 12th film. It stars Eddie Murphy, Angela Bassett, Allen Payne, Kadeem Hardison, John Witherspoon, Zakes Mokae, and Joanna Cassidy. It follows a Caribbean vampire who seduces a Brooklyn police officer who has no idea that she is half-vampire.
The film had awful reviews, and despite the presence of a huge star like Eddie Murphy, it disappointed at the box office. Craven really needed a hit.
  • Budget: $8,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,751,736. ($40.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $34,951,736.

Scream (1996)

"Someone has taken their love of scary movies one step too far."
His 13th film. It stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Skeet Ulrich and Drew Barrymore. Set in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California, Scream's plot follows high school student Sidney Prescott and her friends, who, on the anniversary of her mother's murder, become the targets of a costumed serial killer known as Ghostface.
As he was trying to make it in the industry, Kevin Williamson watched a Turning Point documentary about serial killer Danny Rolling which he said left him unsettled. Williamson later noticed an open window, armed himself with a knife, and called his friend for support. The pair began discussing horror characters that had resonated with them such as Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. This experience prompted Williamson to start developing a concept wherein a girl is haunted by a caller.
He started writing a film titled Scary Movie, and even left an outline for possible sequels. The concept was part of an era where there was debate over the influence of cinematic violence on audience, with Williamson coming up with a brilliant line "movies don't create psychos, movies make psychos more creative." It was inspired by many 1980s slashers, even though the genre was on decline by that point. His characters were intentionally designed to be knowledgeable about these horror films and their typical elements, with the intention of creating a unique killer who was not only aware of horror film clichés but also exploited them for his own advantage.
While Williamson struggled with his previous films, this script was part of a bidding war with the studios, to the point that Oliver Stone himself wanted to direct it. Miramax (through Dimension Films) bought the script, and Williamson made some rewrites to scale back the violence. Bob Weinstein also wanted to change the name, as he believed the audiences would think the film is a comedy.
The studio considered Danny Boyle, Tom McLoughlin, Sam Raimi, Robert Rodriguez, George A. Romero, Quentin Tarantino, and Anthony Waller as prime candidates to direct the film, but they all preferred to view the film as a comedy. Wes Craven was considered, but the studio believed he couldn't direct a satire. Craven also wasn't planning on directing it, as he wanted to focus on more mainstream films to salvage his career. Craven's assistant Julie Plec (who would collaborate with Williamson on The Vampire Diaries) convinced him in helming the project. By signing, Craven decided to get back some of the gore that was missing in the previous drafts.
A huge contrast to the horror films of the era was that the film had established actors as the leads, as Craven and Williamson wanted to prove that no character was safe. Drew Barrymore had already starred in a few recognizable names, Neve Campbell was on the hit show Party of Five, Rose McGowan was known for Encino Man and The Doom Generation, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich were recognizable supporting characters, and Courteney Cox obviously was known for Friends. Vince Vaughn and Natasha Lyonne were the preferred choices for Billy and Tatum, but external problems caused them to drop out.
After viewing the dailies raw footage, the Weinsteins criticized the quality of Craven's work as "workmanlike at best", believing it lacked tension and had an inconsistent tone. The Weinsteins also disliked the mask design, and said Barrymore lacked sex appeal because of the pageboy hairstyle she had chosen. While filming the final fight, Campbell's stuntwoman accidentally stabbed Ulrich with an umbrella tip, missing the protective vest he was wearing and hitting the site of an open heart surgery Ulrich had as a child. During post-production, Harvey Weinstein decided to name the film as Scream based on the Michael and Janet Jackson song.
In a surprising move, the Weinsteins decided to release the film during the holiday season as counter-programming, offering teenagers an alternative to more traditional holiday fare. The decision was unpopular with the cast and crew, with Williamson expecting the film to fail. The film opened with $6.4 million and finishing in fourth place, leading analysts to consider the film as a bomb.
But the film just kept growing.
Buoyed by positive word of mouth, the Weinsteins increased marketing and the film managed to increase in its second and third weekends. It closed with $103 million domestically and $173 million worldwide, becoming the highest grossing slasher film ever and Craven's highest grossing film ever. The film received critical acclaim for its characters and writing, and has since been deemed as one of the most influential horror films of all time. It rekindled interest in horror, resurrected Craven's career and launched the careers of Williamson and the cast.
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $103,046,663. ($245.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $173,046,663.

Scream 2 (1997)

"Someone has taken their love of sequels one step too far."
His 14th film. The sequel to Scream, it stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jamie Kennedy, Laurie Metcalf, Jerry O'Connell, Elise Neal, Timothy Olyphant, Jada Pinkett, and Liev Schreiber. The film takes place two years after the first film and again follows the character of Sidney Prescott, along with other survivors of the Woodsboro massacre, at the fictional Windsor College in Ohio where they are targeted by a copycat killer using the guise of Ghostface.
As Williamson already had plans for sequels, the idea was for Sidney to attend college while being stalked by a copycat Ghostface killer. As filming began, Williamson's script had four killers: Derek, Hallie, Cotton Weary, and Nancy Loomis. But after Williamson transferred his script to the production, it was leaked onto the Internet in full, revealing the identity of the killers and a large amount of the involved plot. This resulted in the production continuing to film with only a partial script while Williamson conducted extensive rewrites, changing much of the film's finale, the identities of the film's killers and drastically altering the roles of other characters such as Randy Meeks and Joel. With a short deadline, Williamson couldn't fully compromise on the final script, forcing Craven to fill in the gaps himself. So the film was one of the very first cases where the Internet leaked major aspects of a film.
As the Weinsteins wanted the film ready for December, it was able to capitalize on the audience's word of mouth to the original. It opened with $32 million in its first weekend, almost five times as big as the original, and the biggest December debut. It didn't hold as great as the original due to the competition, such as Titanic, but it still made $172.3 million worldwide, almost matching the original's gross. It also received very positive reviews, and so a profitable franchise was already underway.
  • Budget: $24,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $101,363,301. ($237.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $172,363,301.

Music of the Heart (1999)

"She gave them a gift they could never imagine. They gave the system a fight it would never forget."
His 15th film. The film stars Meryl Streep, Aidan Quinn, Angela Bassett, Gloria Estefan, Jane Leeves, Kieran Culkin and Jay O. Sanders. The film is a dramatization of the true story of Roberta Guaspari, who co-founded the Opus 118 Harlem School of Music and fought for music education funding in New York City public schools.
After seeing the documentary Small Wonders, Craven was inspired to make a full-length film about Guaspari. Madonna was originally signed to play the role of Guaspari, but left the project before filming began, citing "creative differences" with Craven. When she left, Madonna had already studied for many months to play the violin. Streep learned to play Bach's Concerto for 2 Violins for the film. The project marked a huge departure for Craven; it was his first and only film to be rated PG, and his only one to not be horror or thriller.
It received generally positive reviews, but it bombed at the box office. It received 2 Oscar nominations for Best Actress and Best Original Song, the only Craven film to get any noms.
  • Budget: $27,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,859,394. ($27.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $14,936,407.

Scream 3 (2000)

"The most terrifying scream is always the last."
His 16th film. The third installment in the Scream franchise, it stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox Arquette, Parker Posey, Patrick Dempsey, Scott Foley, Lance Henriksen, Matt Keeslar, Jenny McCarthy, Emily Mortimer, Deon Richmond, and Patrick Warburton. The film's story takes place one year after the previous film's events and follows Sidney Prescott, who has gone into self-imposed isolation following the events of the previous two films but is drawn to Hollywood after a new Ghostface begins killing the cast of the film within a film Stab 3.
The plans for a sequel were already underway since Williamson sold the script, although Williamson still didn't write a script yet. When the Weinsteins approached him to write the film, Williamson was already busy with many projects (including his directorial debut), and was unavailable to perform his duties. He only made a 20-page outline wherein Ghostface would return just as production on a fictional film Stab 3 would be filmed. His plan was to show the killers were part of a Stab fan club (this idea would later be adapted into his show, The Following). With Williamson not available, Ehren Kruger was tasked in writing.
Shortly before production began on the film, the Columbine High School massacre took place, and many parties began looking for reasoning behind the shooters' actions and there came an increased scrutiny on the role of the media in society, including video games and film, and the influence it could have on an audience. With production of Scream 3 not yet underway, there were considerations about whether the film should be made at that time, aware of the potential for negative attention but the studio decided to press forward, albeit with changes.
The Weinsteins demanded to scale back on the gore and emphasize its satiric humor, as well as moving the setting to Hollywood. At one point in the production, the studio went as far as demanding that the film feature no blood or on-screen violence at all, a drastic departure for the series, but Craven directly intervened. One of the aspects changed was that the killer would be revealed to be Stu Macher, having survived the original film. The Weinsteins changed it after Columbine, as they didn't want to associate violence and murder with a high school setting.
The film opened with $34.7 million, a franchise record and the biggest February debut ever. But it had weak legs, although it still made a very profitable $161.8 million worldwide. While the previous films were well-received, this film received negative reviews, who lambasted the film for becoming the very own thing it satirizes.
  • Budget: $40,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $89,143,175. ($178.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $161,834,276.

Cursed (2005)

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
His 17th film. It stars Christina Ricci, Joshua Jackson, Jesse Eisenberg, Judy Greer, Scott Baio, Milo Ventimiglia, Shannon Elizabeth and Mýa, and follows two orphaned siblings attacked by a werewolf loose in Los Angeles.
Kevin Williamson started working on a script that followed the exploits of a New York City serial killer who discovers that his lethal tendencies are due to his lycanthrope nature. When one of his projects was scrapped, Craven decided to direct, teaming them up again for another Scream reunion. But it wasn't planned like that. Craven was making a film, Pulse, when Bob Weinstein abruptly pulled the movie from the schedule ten days before shooting and cut through all the slow lanes, wanting Craven to get to Cursed as soon as possible. Craven was reportedly not pleased so Weinstein doubled his pay in order for him to direct the film. The director deemed the script too tonally similar to his film Vampire in Brooklyn, but felt pressured by the studio, leading him to ultimately sign on.
The film started filming in January 2003, hoping to get the film released in August. In June, they only had six days left for filming. Suddenly, Dimension Films decided to put the movie on hold because top executives at the company weren't happy with the film's ending or how the special effects were progressing, specifically the look of the film's lead lupine. Rick Baker was preparing the final transformation effects when production stopped and asked Weinstein to let his team finish the work in order for it to be ready for the reshoot, but he refused. Patrick Lussier was brought in for massive rewrites, and the film didn't return to production until November. Baker was fired, and the prosthetic make-up was replaced with CGI. Skeet Ulrich filmed his scene as one of the leads, but chose to drop out following the reshoots as he disliked the new direction. It was also heavily edited to get the R rating down to PG-13. The budget was originally $35 million, yet some reports suggest it ballooned all the way to $100 million, making it one of the most expensive horror films ever.
With that budget, it was clear it was not going to be a box office success. It flopped with just $29 million worldwide, and was panned by critics. Craven himself dislikes the final product, and a director's cut was never an option because his original ending was never filmed.
  • Budget: $100,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,297,522. ($30.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $29,621,722.

Red Eye (2005)

"Fear takes flight."
His 18th film. It stars Rachel McAdams, Cillian Murphy, and Brian Cox. The story follows a hotel manager ensnared in an assassination plot by a terrorist while aboard a red-eye flight to Miami.
The film received Craven's best reviews in years, and was a box office success, earning almost $100 million. While he is fine with people loving it, Cillian Murphy is not really fond of the film, "I love Rachel McAdams and we had fun making it but I don’t think it's a good movie. It’s a good B movie."
  • Budget: $26,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $57,891,803. ($92.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $96,258,201.

My Soul to Take (2010)

"Only one has the power to save their souls."
His 19th film. It stars Max Thieriot, Denzel Whitaker, Raul Esparza, and Shareeka Epps. It follows Adam "Bug" Hellerman, who is one of seven teenagers chosen to die following the anniversary of a serial killer's death.
This was Craven's first film in almost two decades where he would be directing, producing and writing. But that didn't pan out to a success: it was a critical and commercial dud.
  • Budget: $25,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,744,435. ($21.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $21,500,813.

Scream 4 (2011)

"New decade. New rules."
His 20th and final film. The fourth installment in the Scream franchise, it stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Anthony Anderson, Alison Brie, Adam Brody, Rory Culkin, Marielle Jaffe, Erik Knudsen, Mary McDonnell, Marley Shelton, Nico Tortorella, and Roger L. Jackson. The film takes place on the fifteenth anniversary of the original Woodsboro murders from Scream and involves Sidney Prescott returning to the town after ten years, where Ghostface once again begins killing students from Woodsboro High.
In 2010, Williamson and Craven confirmed their plans for a new film. Craven said that endless sequels, the modern spew of remakes, film studios, and directors are the butts of parodies in the film. The main characters have to figure out where the horror genre is in current days to figure out the modern events happening to and around them. This was the first film in the franchise to use CGI, with the knife's blade added in post-production.
Even though the franchise was profitable, it seemed like its glory days were long behind it by the time it hit theaters. The film disappointed in its opening weekend with just $18 million, and closed with a weak $97 million worlwide, far less than the previous films. It also received mixed reviews, particularly for its writing and new characters. It was the last film directed by Craven before his death in 2015.
  • Budget: $40,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $38,180,928. ($53 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $97,231,420.

The Verdict

Quite inconsistent, but a very iconic figure in the horror genre. You know you made it big when your creations include Elm Street and Scream. Craven often struggled with difficult productions (you can blame the Weinsteins for that), but he still managed to make competent and scary films, even if some are better than others. Some even see critical re-appraisal as time passes; even Scream 3 and Scream 4 have their fans. We don't know what he would've done with the franchise after the fourth film, but he made it clear he was exhausted by having to film without finished scripts. Rest in Peace to a horror legend.
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Clint Eastwood. I think I'll have to make two posts, given that he directed 42 films.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... Ang Lee. A legendary Asian director.
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
May 13-19 Clint Eastwood Great actor. Great director.
May 20-26 Robert Zemeckis Can we get old Zemeckis back?
May 27-June 2 Richard Donner An influential figure of the 70s and 80s.
June 3-9 Ang Lee What happened to Lee?
Who should be next after Lee? That's up to you. And there's a theme.
And that theme is: controversial directors. I'm talking directors who have attained a polarizing response to their films (like Zack Snyder), or the directors themselves are also controversial figures in real life (like Oliver Stone). Basically, a director that has as many fans as haters.

2024.05.11 19:48 zerostyle Suggested partitioning of directories vs buckets?

I'm looking to mostly just backup my personal laptop.
I currently push all my photos to B2 but nothing else in a backup bucket, and use rclone to sync over my folders file that looks something like this:
rclone sync -P ~/Documents/mydirectorypath/Photo-Sync b2encrypted:zerostylebackup
I want to start also backing up a documents folder for protection as well that is in a different folder.
Should I:
(a) create a new bucket just for those documents and sync that folder separately to the bucket - downside I think is that I'd need to maintain a different bucket api key / rclone encryption password / etc when syncing over
(b) just create another rclone command to sync to another folder in the existing bucket, i.e.
rclone sync -P ~/Documents/mydirectorypath/documents b2encrypted:zerostylebackup
Open to other best practices here. If I start backing up more I'm just trying to avoid having a whole bunch of CLI commands for every directory I want if they aren't all in one parent directory.
Also not sure if I have to reconfigure my rclone encrypted remote here or not.
